Azathoth is less dangerous because he's not on Earth.
    Hastur doesn't exist.
Nyarlathotep is cunning and dangerous, but less powerful.
    Tsathoggua is too lazy.
    Shub-Niggurath sticks to the backwoods.
    Yog-Sothoth isn't on earth.
Cthulhu is the most dangerous not because he's powerful but because he's here, he has an army of his progeny, servitor races and cultists, he could wake up any minute and when the stars are right he plans to take the world for himself.

That and he's been spinning his wheels a lot lately. Guy needs to think up some new fresh material, stuff like he used to do in the bad old days.
I mean running that corporation was a good idea, but it just seems so.. impersonal you know?
He used to be able to get right inside peoples skins, figureatively and literally speaking.
Remember the time he used strange machines of metal and glass to end a civilisation and bring it back again as part of a travelling show act?
He needs to stop being so conventional, and start thinking outside the box again.

I just say what I've heard.

Someone else could probably confirm why they couldn't use it, but Hastur is undoubtedly in the game.

Direct from the book, the avatar of the Dead God Hastur comes into the world in 2073. Later, in the same are, the Unnamed Oneproceeds to lead the Rapine Storm across Asia.

It is undoubtedly him, they just can't use 'King in Yellow' for some reason.

The Old Ones were, the Old Ones are, and the Old Ones shall be. Not in the spaces we know, but between them, they walk serene and primal, undimensioned and to us unseen. Yog-Sothoth knows the gate. Yog-Sothoth is the gate. Yog-Sothoth is the key and guardian of the gate. Past, present, future, all are one in Yog-Sothoth. He knows where the Old Ones broke through of old, and where They shall break through again. We're not Mongoose, we're just a couple of gamers that put together this book in our free time and it was allot of hard work. Mongoose is graciously helping us with printing and distribution otherwise we wouldn't be able to afford to put the book out.

We don't have offices and we don't have a staff. I left active duty Navy life last January as a recently promoted E-5 and never even saw the pay. My wife and I have blown through what little savings we had to keep us afloat the last year while I finishing work on the book. (That you now have effectively stolen from me.)
    >> Mike V 01/18/08(Fri)13:26 No.1033785
I used every spare moment that I had in the last 3 years on active duty to design everything you see in front of you. Matthew Grau did 95% of the writing. In total I spent over 7000 hrs working on both improving as an artist and trying my best to make our first book look as good as it can and give Matthews creation the level of art that it deserved.

In printing in color it was our decision to do so and sacrifice profits to give back to the community. One of the reasons we made the book is because we were sick of seeing crappy products being released by companies that have finances available to them to do more. With what cash we could get together between us and allot of hard work we knew that we could put together something as good as what was being passed off as professional material in the hobby games industry. I think that we've accomplished that. You should be demanding more for your money from the big guys, but when you steal from the little guy like us, it really screws up our chances of continuing to work in this industry and put out even better products or make a difference.

On the "viral marketing" comment, there are only 2 sites that we talked about the book on and that was rpg.net and yog-sothoth.com There was no viral campaign. If you heard about it from other sites, that wasn't me or Matthew. We couldn't even afford a graphic designer so I had to teach myself logo design, needless to say there was no money for marketing of any kind. I had never heard of 4chan until this past weekend when I was told that someone had uploaded a pdf of our book for download. Yes, I'm the guy that's been tracking down the links every day.
    >> Mike V 01/18/08(Fri)13:27 No.1033787
If you like what you see, buy a copy.
We're working on putting together a pdf as well so for those of you that are strapped for cash, you can get the official high res version soon.. we just have to sit down and organize the files.

If the illegal pdf continues to be distributed illegally, there's a high chance that you'll only get see 1 more book from us before we have to call it quits. We've already put production on hold until we receive our first check from Mongoose and seeing what's going on on this site isn't building any confidence in our ability to survive.

Yes, I am the real deal. That cover art and the mecha images that were posted is art that I penciled and had friends paint over. Regardless of the net trolls, I thought that it would be in everyones best interest that I tell everyone what's up and that we're not 'The Man'.

Thanks for the compliments on the book though guys, we appreciate it. This book was a labor of love and I hope that it shows. If there's any questions that you might have or just want to learn more there's plenty of info on our forums. Including that Migou mecha picture that was requested for earlier.

Well, I like Mike V. I like Cthulhu tech. I am a casual role player, and frankly, I never would have heard of the book, let alone bought it, if it hadn't been for the attention it has got on this board.
Downloading the .pdf was easy, and it enabled me to see whether I liked cthulhu tech. I mean, I wouldn't have bought it, because I don't DM, and I don't have a group, and I wouldn't have heard of it if it wasn't for this board.

If I ever do decide to run a cthulhu tech campaign, I'll probably buy the book off amazon, since I already know it's a quality production. Reading off a pdf just isn't convenient. You know, my interest would have never been awakened if I had not read the pdf. That leaked .pdf hugely increased the chances of me buying your book.

I am going to seriously think this is legit and ask something.

Speed enhancers, do you consider those to already be applied to mech statblocks or you apply them on top of whats listed? It's sort of confusing since not only do they die at certain SF levels but your normal speed is also reduced.

And again I remind you not to take the piracy THAT seriously, look from a small distance at what you are trying to sell. Lovecraft with mechs. People say lovecraft spins in his grave from just mispronouncing god names let alone giving them ideals like shub's creation or Aza's entropy. Ctech sounds like its meant to turn the grave into some sort of turbine. The piracy has only allowed many to get over the kneejerk reaction and find something they might love.

While I can totally understand your plight as somenoe just trying to start up something on your own and make it out there, I think you're going to have a rough road ahead.

in this day and age, it's not the quality of the product that will carry you, but how you market and distribute it. (WotC has proven this time and again through their subpar products)

In your case, the pirating, especially if the product is good, is almost inevitable.

Having said that though, there are ways you can that shit work for you. Like one of the guys above said, if playing the game requires the book at hand, then the PDF is just a teaser at best, since loading it up on your laptop and printing it off is just not the same.

take Spirits of the Century, for example, they've gone ahead just put their SRD out in the open to increase their product exposure.

from several of the comments I see in this thread, that is precisely your problem right now. you have no exposure. while getting your shit pirated sucks and all, it DOES increase your product circulation. With a bit of concrete data and research, you might be able to convince a publishing firm to put more money behind product once they realize how popular it is.

Also make a maddening pact with Nyarlathotep to get some sort of game deal going. I couldnt care less if it were a just a reskin of the old mechwarrior games and was 10 years below anything playable. Sage that'd be great if we had a budget. It costs a retarded amount of money to print a full color perfect bound book.. not much less than the MSRP of the book actually. We will have to sell a retarded amount of books to start getting involved in those other industries.

I've been talking to some friends that worked for Dream Pod 9 about possibly doing a mini's game together. If we get good news (our check is decent enough to pay art contracts) it'll be go time. The bottom line is that we're going to need cash to pay for production of the rule books and if we wanted to get a small business loan to pay for more than that we'd have to use some sort of property as equity, it always boils down to money and it's in short supply right now.

To answer the speed question, yes you add those to what's already listed i.e. if your adding a doubling speed enhancement to Nazzadi Storm mech your speed would now effectively be increased to a max of 240 mp (592/144 ypt). Hope that helps.

I've said before that to me, they felt a tad thrown in there to be a 'second race' or, at worst, 'chaotic good drow ranger'. I've got a few ideas for using them, but these mostly centre around things not being happy and shiny for the Nazzadi in the NEG.

I'm not sure whether I belief this is really you, but if it is Mike, you're not doing your business any good. Regardless of whether it's ok or not to download this book (I have a less negative view of piracy than you, but that aside), you're not making a good impression by whining on it on your own forum, getting into a fight with a potential customer and then coming here (the place affectionately called the asshole of the internet) and trying to get us not to download it. You're not making a good impression at all. And consider:t not only are you speaking for WildFire, out of the four people there you are by far the most vocal. And I do have a copy of ctech. I'm honestly trying to help you out. You are NOT deterring anyone from pirating ctech. On the contrary. The harder you tell people ON THE FUCKING INTERNET that they can't do something, the harder they'll try to do it.
    Now consider the following:
    - The scan is of BAD quality. Done on purpose by the guy who scanned it. He also left a note telling people to support you and put a direct link in the pdf to the Mongoose site.
    - Who the hell games with pdfs? Do you expect people to print it out and waste almost as much money on ink as the book itself would cost? Do you think people will take their laptop to the gaming table? In the end, if you want to game you're going to need the book. Even for online games a book is much handier than a pdf.

But even if you don't accept all this, even if you think pirates are evil incarnate, you are NOT helping your company out by acting like a child. You are one of four guys representing your company. A bit of professionalism wouldn't be out of place.

The "I downloaded it to see if I wanted to buy it" argument is well-worn, yes. But there -are- people who don't buy after they try, even if they did like it. Yes, a lot of us are buying the book because of the pdf. Don't trust any statistics that you didn't fake yourself. Or something like that.

I'll just repost my main arguments from the forum:

    1. Many people want to try out, viral marketing etc blabla. Essentially depends on each individual. I don't even think there has ever been made any proper research on that matter (so, proof me wrong, haha).

    2. People who downloaded it may have actually a) not liked it or b) no possibility of buying it (no money, living on the Philllippines).

I just forgot about the rest, so that has to do it.

    OK, simple argument.

    1) The right to reproduce the book is reserved by the publisher/owner.

    2) If they do not feel viral marketing via zomg torrent plz is an effective means to make money, they won't do it and neither should you.
