What would you like to roleplay? Out with it, I don't care how dorky it is, I want to know. Be honest. Lets share some things we would love play if it were turned into a solid table top RPG.

I think I'd like to play something along the lines of Earthbound (or "Mother" if you'd like). Questing through modern day society as super children would just be fun. It seems easy to adapt as well: Psionics and all. Also Jess (I think that was his name) is sort of like an artificer and Poo is a monk.

I want to run a Planescape game where we either go to alternate versions of the Prime Material Plane (a la Sliders or maybe even the Exiles comics). Then use it as an excuse to have the DnD characters run around in Candyland, Chutes and Ladders, and maybe Life.
    >> Anonymous 10/30/07(Tue)01:57 No.752155
    Jeff.

An Earthbound-style RPG is easy enough to run. d20 Modern + psionics + a good sense of humor = Earthbound. Actually, Mutants & Masterminds with a low power level would actually be a better system now that I think about it.

It's not a specific setting or anything, but I'd like to be able to just once roleplay a romance. It's just very uncomfortable to do, regardless of the GM's sex. And the other players are going to heckle you, no matter what. It doesn't have to be a whole lot, just two characters realizing how much they care for each other and taking that first step toward true love. It would be a refreshing change from "OH MAN TAVERN WENCHES" or "I HAVE NO MUSHY FEELINGS! JUST SMASHY FEELINGS!"

My favorite thing I roleplayed was a 12 year old Genius with Teddybear hommunculi. It was interesting none the less.

Earthbound would be amazing as an table top game.

The little bit that I've actually played as characters I usually just play as the general know-it-all/cocky-doom sayer necromancer.

I'd like to play a really nice steampunk dungeon (one I don't have to DM)

My favourite roleplaying campaign was a WFRP campaign, playing as an roving Evil based band. A Skaven lead warp-guitarist, Chaos Dwarf on steam powered drums, a Black Orc on bass, Tomb Prince playing his ribs like a piano, Chaos Sorcerer using magic like a synthesiser and Dark Elf on vocals. As dumb as it was, it was a great campaign.

Man, it would be hella awesome to whip up a M&M/d20 Modern campaign centered around the Crazy Stuff (tm) in Earthbound. Emphasis on wacky plot devices like giant iron statues, insane inventors, a man who would become a dungeon later on, (I'd even bring in a Guest DM so he could write out some signs to read and do the interview at the end.)

Shit, even just basing it on the actual game and playing through with people who haven't played it in a while / people who are open to some serious hilarity (Moonside!)

I had a dragon with the Nameless psychosis template in one of my own games. He had gone completely insane after discovering that the Universe and all within it was simple entertainment for people sitting around a kitchen table rolling dice and checking stats in books.

Having gone insane, he articulated this as shouting "The horrible, horrible ones above us! Staring into crystals! Crystals written with life and death and love and hate! Always putting words into our mouths!"

Something like The Lion King might be fun. Different species for different tasks. The object would probably be just defending and aquiring new land. Maybe a rival group or pride here and there. Claws 1d6 bite 1d8? Baboons +4 to heal checks? I don't know.

Yeah, he was a perfect Chaotic Neutral, assisting the GM's plan whenever he could. He'd jump in front of fireballs and take hits for the BBEG and then turn around and axe him in the face beacuse the GM commanded it.

He was guaranteed to clusterfuck even the easiest of missions into insanity, but our GM never took advantage of his fanaticism and pretty much ruined his character because he couldn't think outside the box.

I gave him the Nameless template because after realizing the horrifying truth of his fictional existence he tried to kill off any character or creature who might make reference to him so that he would be forever free of the horrible crystals and their careless masters. He couldn't of course, but he was insane, so he'd try anyhow.

Normal people with giant robots. The style of play could be anything: Highschool students with alter egos (Power Rangers), ultra serious military backed mechs (Evangelion), or just living life normally until event is randomly rolled up that requires some giant robot action that you just so happen to provide (Megas XLR). The Power Rangers example would be fun and would require the players to invest a bit in bluff for the whole "I'm uh, feeling sick, gotta go!".

I loved the Dinotopia books as a kid. Recently rediscovered them and indulged in nostalgia.

I would love to roleplay something like this but before you say "LAWL DND HAZ DINOSAURZ", the important part of the dinotopian world was the attitude and themes that surrounded it. A huge part of the original book was "weapons are enemies to wielders" and trying to solve things peacefully. There's really no focus on combat or martial traditions of any kind - these things just don't exist.

I think if would be very hard to preserve the charm of the world and play a game that featured at lease some element of combat. Tricky.

While the setting presented in this game is specifically for PCs who happen to be "awakened" computer programs, you could easily have each character be the virtual avatar for the "real" character... who could be a d20 Modern character, I guess.

    A. Easy enough, as long as they aren't cookie cutters, WHICH TOO MANY OF THEM ARE. Odd quirks are the one saving grace of a game that has essentially turned into a level treadmill. B. There is a big difference between LOL BACKSTAB UR LEWT IS MINE and having say a rogue being a total dick or a Wizard with Lich issues, that adds for atmosphere.
    C. Bleh. He exists he has motives that are consistant that can be exploited and relied upon, not my fault if he breaks the railroad some GM tried to set up instead of just letting the game flow.

And how tweaky Mystics would be as a PC race, especially with the...questionable translation of the game making them out to essentially be immortal vampire hookers with funky hair. Maybe a game like Bokurano ("Ours") (1 robot many pilots taking turns (or... a turn...)): Each player creates three characters (they'll need them), each one has to be different and carry a different flaw, randomize the piloting order, the character that is choosen controls the giant robot while those that do not still hang around in the "cockpit" supporting the controller. It becomes pilot vs random enemy giant robot. While the battle rages, special attention must be brought to the city that is the battle grounds; each action, each step could result in civilian casualties (players can get creative with how they save them both inside and out of battle). The time limit is 48 hours after the enemy robot's appearance.

If victory is achieved within time limit: Tally up the civillian casualties and collatoral damage and give the players character a score.
    The character then dies.

Characters die after piloting the giant robot whether or not the battle ends in victory. Knowing this, when a character is called up to pilot, it is up to the other characters to make sure that the choosen takes up his or her responsibility as the robot's runner through use of friendships, promises, diplomacy or even intimidate checks. If they fail, the current pilot may run away from battle or even worse, use the giant robot to exact revenge on certain people below.

Just Russian Roullet until the last pilot. Lots of drama to be had. Destructable environment with a set civillian population that dwindles with each encounter. Giant robot action.

    What do you guys think?

I'll tell you what, Mages wont be Gods that's for sure. And Mystics rather than health have plot armor. If their plot armor falls to zero they are baleeted, otherwise they can essentially die from an axe to the face and come back the same night. However any time Mystic's duel the loser dies instantly.

The bigger question is how the hell would you balance Red in his Alkaiser form?

One of the most fun things about the game, though, to me, was how the four races all leveled up in different ways; I'd love to see a tabletop system handle that kind of diversity. Just imagine a party dungeon-crawling in the Koorong sewer system, the monsters rooting around for meat, the robots grafting whatever rare treasures they find onto their bodies, and the humans and mystics running around slaughtering everything that has a pulse, and all of them coming out many times stronger than when they came in.

While the spirit of bokurano is good, the problem is that it would create an unfun game, because only one character is ever piloting the robot at any given time, which means that all the other players just sit around and stack dice while waiting for the character to die and hope it's their turn.

A Bokurano-clone would be cool, but it would have to allow for things to be happening to more than one character at a time.

Well. It's not really much of a twist I guess :/. It's just that it manages to balance the whole "Nature lalalala" with encroaching urban sprawl by setting up a whole ecosystem of spirits feeding off of whatever energy the mortal plane gives off (The more powerful spirits are self sustaining, but often omnom their lessers).

So, you could have a spirit of joy, who suddenly finds his supply (A middle school classroom with a cheerful and kind young woman of a teacher) dry up due to an unfortunate car wreck, he could turn to a heroin junkie, feeding off of the high... And encouraging him to take more doses. And spread it to his friends.

As far as the spirit can tell, he's just spreading joy, isn't he?

Werewolves exist to keep the spirits in the spirit world and non-spirits in the real world. When spirits start crossing over, the werewolves get pissed.

I've got a neo-Bonegnawer character (Raku Iron Master) running around who's view on the whole Gaia thing is "it's the spirit of a thing that's five billion years old, has shrugged off ice ages and meteor strikes, and is going to continue existing long after we're gone. New Bokurano idea: personal action cards. Pass out note cards to each player, one card for each character the player controls. written on these cards are the courses of action that the character is going to take if he or she is not convinced enough that only taking down the enemy robot is the highest priority. These personal actions could be self preservation, revenge, sociopathic disregard for civillians, the extreme need to not die a virgin, drug use, and so on. It could also include hinderances like crippling depression and lethargy. These cards are flipped after several unsuccessful attempts to provide support for the doomed pilot to be. It could really challenge the RPing skills of the players if the GM writes them, shuffles them, and then randomly hands them out for each character.

Because there are big, mean spirits out there and being able to RIP AND TEAR is often the best way to chase them off. They're hunters, infested with a wolf spirit.

They're not healing the spirit world, they're picking off the idiots/weak/sick spirits that go where they don't belong.

The cold loneliness of space. The isolation and fear of the boundless unknown. Humanity finally develops the ability to travel the stars, only to find out there is *nothing* out there. We are *it*, that humanity has found, no matter how far they stretch out seeking contact.

And then some of the probes come back. And something is *wrong*. Ships that were lost for a time return decades, centuries later, crewless. Outposts and cities on habitable planets on the 'rim' of human civilization lose communication, Roanokes of the far future. Bounty hunters, paid mercenaries that let no one and nothing scare them, armed with the most powerful bio-suits and weapons humanity has created to date, go to search for answers where no one else dares to tread.

I'd like to play a game set in a world populated by humans and anthros. Then I'd throw in the pods from Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Why not just play one with the pods? Well, I'd do that too. So why throw in anthros (furries)? 'cause I'm weird.

I'd also love a crossover with Final Fantasy IX and Half-Life 2. Have the Combine open up a rift and invade. Elvaan and Humes would be "Synthed" into Combine soldiers, Galka would be wiped out, and Tarutaru would be coverted into power batteries for various Combine technologies (all that MP!).

I'd also love to play a nice "The Thing" RPG. I've read one detailed game-setup for it. It'd be lots of fun, though you'd have to make sure that any players who were imitated didn't let on about that OOC to anyone.

I always wanted to roleplay Half-Life 1. Just have the PC's be Scientists, Office Staff, Technicians, Janitors, and Security Guards. Then they have to work together and try to escape Black Mesa. Enemies and obstacles would of-course be things from the game. Toxic and radioactive spills, fires, collapsing walls/ceilings, merciless Marines and Black Ops, and of-course hungry aliens.

I've also always wondered if some less fanciful scenarios wouldn't be a bit of fun. Say some games modeled after Poseidon (the original) or the Towering Inferno. Or having the players take on the rolls of random people in San Francisco after "the Big One". Maybe a good old fashioned plague sweeping the Earth and the players have to survive by avoiding catching the plague as well as escaping all the chaos that grips civilization during the height of the epidemic. They'd then have to find some way to maintain a living afterward. The littlest things could get people killed once the "worst" was over, like say coming up with appendicitis but having no doctor around.
    >> Anonymous 10/30/07(Tue)06:53 No.752713
    >>752669
That sounds like it would be fun. The team work in the first Half-Life was somewhat lacking (thought it was great at the time) considering obstacles were something only Freeman and his suit could handle which would actively force you to kiss your companions good-bye. Just how simple the objective is, getting out of Black Mesa, and how difficult all these different parties make it for you makes for a great RPG setting that I'd like to play as well.

Towering Inferno and Poseidon type games could be entertaining as well though it seems that they'd be nothing more than a series of climb checks, jump checks, heal checks, and level pulling. Maybe some combat could spice things up?

Not a band who also fights monsters, but one that mostly plays music. But there's no way to do that besides, "I roll my perform. 14+8, 22." "DC was 20, your band rocks, you get money and bitches and your next concert sells out. Roll to see how you play that one."
    >> That Damn Mouse 10/30/07(Tue)10:22 No.753114

You could fleshen it out. You could have a list of songs (each with a different DC) broken down into a series of riffs, choruses and such (again, each with a different DC for each player). Or you could try playing Guitar Hero 2 and corking the results from that into a useable result.

Steampunk Traveller. Take the Traveller universe set during the first expansion of terrans and make everything steampunk. I actually want to do this some day but have never got around to it.

Anywhere But Here. An idea gleaned from RPG.net which was inspired by the novel of the same name. Basically, some guy invents a Hyperdrive that costs $200 to build. He releases the plans on the internet. Mass exodus of earth ensues because you can mount the hyperdrive on a car and jump to other planets. It was summed up as "Rednecks in space."

Transhuman Space. If you havn't read this book I recommend it. I've wanted to do a special agent type story with it. Heavily influenced by Ghost in the Shell and Appleseed.

Technomancer 2100. Take GURPS Technomancer and advance the timeline 100 years. Magical FTL ships explore the universe. Low-tech fantasy type worlds mixed with higher-tech worlds. The antagonists are racist elves that use bio-tech and think they should be the only ones with FTL.

A year or so ago Dragon magazine put together this d20 band-shenanigans RPG. Think Scooby Doo or Patridge Family or some other campy 70s show. Character classes are band roles; the singer, guitarist, bassist, drummer, keyboardist, etc. Playing music is handled like a "combat" against the crowd, with one character taking the lead for a round/song and the others enhacing the leads' strengths and covering their weaknesses.

Also included goofy-ass Scooby-Doo-style chase rules. When in doubt, find a hallway full of doors.

It was called Hijinx. Not that good IMO. Nowadays I would keep the art and use WUSHU.

Okay, here's an idea that can work for just about any setting and system, but I'll use D&D as a default:

All of the characters are very powerful and experienced adventures (around level 10 or higher) who have been travelling together as a party for a few years now. Along the way they've done all sorts of epic things like slaying dragons and saving kingdoms. They're not the best in the world, but they can and will handle most adventuring challenges with relative ease. On the way they've learned much about themselves and each other, and have intricate relationships. This will all be established before the game even starts.

Now put them out of action. Maybe they've decided to retire, at least for now, and move into the city (or a quiet little town, whichever they prefer). The actual game will be at least 3/4 roleplaying, and almost all of the challenges will bo social. Sure, you may be a half-orc barbarian who can kill owlbears with your teeth alone, but do you have what to takes to win the heart of that elf girl next door? Can a wizard who's spent half of his life studying magic hold onto any actual friends when they don't need your help?

Protip: Make sure that the players are smart or they'll abandon it all and run off on adventures the first chance they get.

This sounds like it would make a better webcomic or something than an actual roleplay. Then again my group doesn't really have the attention span for what you describe.

This sounds like a crazy 80s sitcom.
