The yellow sun beats down on your back as you ascend the final steps. Panting, you glance up at the hateful orb, nearly hearing it laugh at your discomfort. You wipe a bit of sweat from your brow with the back of your arm and look at the imposing building ahead of you.

There's some kind of instructor or teacher gathering the other new students, who seem to be in the same shape as you, overall. A few seem to be full of energy, the blazing sun barely affecting them as they walk or jog over. Almost as a counterpoint, a single boy barely manages to drag himself over the last step to the landing with one arm, his eyes blank and hollow. A trail of sweat is clearly visible behind him, drying in the heat like a slug's trail.

"Attention, new students! Please come over here; there is fresh water and we need to get started with orientation!"

The instructor has her hand raised over her head to make sure everyone can see where she is. You walk closer, picking up a water bottle off a nearby table and taking a gulp. God, who knew plain water could taste this good?

"We need to take roll before we get started. When I call your name, respond promptly. If I don't have you on the list, you aren't getting in today, and you'll have to go back down the steps and try your luck tomorrow." She gives a pointed look to the slug-boy, who is feeling around on the table for a water bottle while his face is still flat on the ground.

"In any case, we don't have long, so drink up while I take roll."

You wait patiently for your name.

>Name and gender please, will be taking the coolest-sounding name and the gender with the most responses.

(This is a Soul Eater quest, with a few differences. First, students start out at age 15 to 17, depending on when they are discovered. I know you guys will get flirty with people, and I'd rather not make that super awkward. Also, there are very few characters and plot points in common with canon. You can't waifu Tsubaki or Marie, you can't punch Black Star's smug face in, and you can't join Spirit on his cruise for strange. By the same token, probing in the depths of the DWMA for a bag of you know what is inadvisable, because you might find an empty room... or possibly something else entirely. I have a general plan for the story, but a lot of it depends on where your collective interests lie.)
>>
(In addition, we will be using a loose 1d100 roll, best of 3, to perform actions with a chance of failure or consequence. I reserve the right to have horrible things happen to you if you do something silly, like grabbing a witch's tits, or trying to make a harem without being REAL smooth about it. You're 16, so don't expect to be Roarke Starwind from Mecha Space Pirate Quest right out of the gate. However, if you roll high, a lot is possible.)

"Robert Krall?"

"Here."

The slug boy raises a finger. He's not face down anymore, but he's still laying flat on the pavement.

"Tony Starbrine?"

"Here!" You hold up a hand.

The woman doesn't even glance up, just ticks the paper on her clipboard. "Kia Alani?"

"HEEEEEEERE!" A short, petite girl practically sings out from behind you. It startles you a bit, but you try not to show it.

"Okay, and that's the last of you. Good. Now, we need to do some basic organization. Those of you who are Meisters, group up on the left. Demon Weapons, on the right.

Well dang
Maybe we can get a shield/gauntlet as a weapon
the idea would be that when we get strong enough to do the soul resonance it would extend to the other arm and eventually just be a full suit of armor

You walk to the left group, a little bit less miserable than when you reached the top of the steps. You spare a glance at the instructor: A severe, older woman with blonde hair and Germanic features. If it weren't so hot out, maybe you'd look a little closer, but... screw everything about being out here. You notice the spry girl and the slug boy both stay with the right group. Weapons, then. You briefly entertain the idea that the slug boy is a water gun, with how much he was sweating earlier.

"All right! We'll be heading inside for a brief interview with an instructor or Death Scythe about your history and general level of ability. These are people trusted by Lord Death himself, and will know you're lying, so don't try it. Come on, now!

"You follow the woman in, noting that everyone seems to have the same tan and black trainee uniform on, except for the bubbly girl in the Weapon group. She's showing... quite a lot of her very tanned skin, with a sarong around her denim shorts and thin t-shirt. You have to wonder if she's an islander, a show-off, or just knows how to dress for heat.

You end up in a room with a plain, unassuming man with thick glasses. He looks at you critically as you sit in the chair across from him.

"So, I'm Satoru Keichi. Meister. Says here that you tried to steal Michelle off of Hinoko's hip?"

He tries to keep a straight face, but you can see a smile playing at the corner of his mouth.

You sigh. "Yeah, that's right. You can pawn a gun for decent cash, so I went for it. How was I supposed to know the gun was a person?"

"And... it says here that you nearly got away? Impressive. Hinoko and Michelle have a history of always catching their prey, and you nearly broke that."

"Well, I grew up on the streets. Only way to survive is to learn how to get the fu-" His eyebrows raise slightly as you nearly curse. "get out of Dodge. That's what I was going to say."

"I see. Well, I can scan your soul to see if you have any obvious strengths or weaknesses, or you can choose to let that be and figure it out on your own. I'm capable of seeing souls, if I focus. Wanna try it?" He seems bored already.

>Strong Soul - Your wavelength is powerful, but difficult to handle! You can wreck enemies with sheer force, but you might burn your weapon out and it's hard to exert fine control over your strength. Might not be an issue if you have to fight unarmed.
>Accomodating Soul - Your soul plays nice with others! You sync well with nearly anyone, but madness and Soul Magic has an easier time with you. Be wary!
Death's Soul - You must have a Death Scythe in your lineage, because you have the faint traces of one who has consumed a lot of soul energy, for such a young person. Able to resist Madness and Soul Magic easier.
>Witch's Soul - You had a witch in your lineage! You find yourself able to channel great bursts of energy, increasing your power for a few seconds, but this will light you up as a witch to anyone able to detect them or see souls. Be very careful with who knows this, though, as you are male, the staff at the DWMA don't mind all that much.

Witch's Soul it is.

It would have been a MUCH bigger deal if you were a girl, as that would make you... well, a witch, if a weak one. We'll figure out the details as the story progresses, but this is definitely an interesting option.

And yes, you can develop magic, even as a male (Free used magic in the original), but you start off only able to draw on the incredible soul power Witches possess.

"Yeah, might as well. I didn't really know my folks, so there could be anything in there. Let me know if it looks terminal, Doc."

Satoru nods, then holds still for a moment as he focuses. He stares into your center of mass for a good long period. You nearly miss it, but a bead of sweat appears on his forehead.

"Mr. Satoru? You all right?"

"Huh?" He suddenly sits upright."Yeah, I'm... Well, you're an interesting one. You seem to... well..."

He seems at a loss for words for a moment.

"One of our greatest enemies here at the DWMA are the Witches. Women with the ability to use their Souls to cast magic, and nearly all are infected with the Madness of Destruction."

"Meaning..?" You can feel your chest tighten as you anticipate fleeing. Stairs or no, you aren't going to be caught like this.

"Well, your soul... it shows signs of a Witch. Not their direct influence, but... You have a Witch in your family."

There's a long silence, which you finally break.

"So, so I get a pointy hat? Should I start checking my nose for warts?" Your voice is calm, but your muscles are tensed up, ready to bolt.

Satoru seems to notice your stress and sits back. "No, nothing like that. Men can't be witches, regardless of lineage. You're safe from us, though some students might take it a bit badly. They're our enemies for a reason. Just be careful with who knows, all right?"

You let yourself calm down. "Okay, fine. Anything else?"

"Nah, you're free to go. Send the next one in, please."

You get up from the chair, your heart finally returning to a normal rhythm. A witch? Maybe that's why you've been able to avoid being killed so many times: You have Bullshit Magic on your side.

You pass by The Incredible Slug himself, Robert... Krall? Yeah, that was his name. "You're up, man."

"Thanks." He is finally on his feet, at least. He trudges off to the room you just left.

You see the instructor from before nearby, and she briskly walks over to you.

"You're all done? Good. Please follow the yellow arrow signs to the cafeteria. Please socialize until everyone is done."

You follow the little arrows into a large room full of circular tables. There, you see several groups of kids your age talking. The islander-looking girl is sitting with a small group of girls you recognized from the Weapon group.

Writing.
>>
You take up a position a fair distance from the door, leaning against the wall as you observe the others.

The islander girl is sitting with two other girls. They both seem Japanese, and they aren't saying much compared to the boisterous tanned girl.

The one is tall and lean, with long, braided hair that reaches the center of her back, and seems to be completely at ease in this new environment. She does talk, but seems to be watching the others, like you. You lock eyes with her for a moment, and see a slight nod before she moves on. I guess that's... good? You talked to girls before, but they were street kids like you, not obviously well-bred predators like this.

The other girl looks like she's trying to shrink into her own shadow. She seems to be very out of sorts, almost like she'd rather not be here at all. Reminds you of a girl who left her purse on the bus once. You had found 18 bucks and some expensive makeup in there... along with a... well, a marital aid. Weird people out there.

She notices you staring at her as you reminisce, and she turns away suddenly, faintly blushing.

Suddenly, the lights dim, and a large white skull mask appears at the front of the room. As your eyes adjust, you can make out a... well, a shape, in black behind it. It is vaguely humanoid, but...

Then it hits you. This is the big man himself, Lord Death. Shit. You aren't ready to deal with...

"Hey, hello, how are ya?!" The figure unfurls large, almost foam-like hands and waves emphatically. "Welcome to my school! I hope you have lots of fun and make tons of friends here!"

Well. For being the living personification of Death, he's... cheerful.

"If you ever have any questions, feel free to come to me or any member of my staff! I can't stay long, but I just wanted to say, personally... Welcome, to the DWMA!"

He then rolls up and disappears... somehow, leaving a burst of rainbow confetti behind.

You have no words.

"YEAH! WOO!" The sole voice ringing out... of course, the islander girl. She's a fun one.

"All right, it's time to assign living quarters and classes. You have all been assessed, and will start school first thing tomorrow morning. Until then, get plenty of rest!"

The instructor from before walks to the spot Lord Death was occupying previously.

"Form up, men on the left, women on the right, I'll be taking you to the dorm areas in Dungeon 2. Oh, and dorms are for YOU ONLY." She regards you all with a serious glare." There are private common areas for training or studying, that are monitored by the staff here. If you are caught with anyone in your personal dorm, expect punishment."

You overhead a low voice from behind you "I'll make it worth it, then." You hear a few snickers from the boy's line... and one from the girl's?

"All right, march!"

She leads you deep into the depths of the academy. You are assigned a room, with basic training clothes in the drawers.

The instructor stops at your room before you close the door.

"Look, I know you didn't have much where you came from. Meals are free in the cafeteria, and if you need any replacement clothing, talk with your teacher. I..." She looks to the side. "I know what it's like to have nothing, to come from nothing. You have an opportunity to be so much more, here."

She shuts the door before you can respond.

You have a few hours before curfew.

"... Hi?"

You size her up right back. She's very small, barely 5 feet tall, and... well, she's pretty cute, you have to admit. However, you can tell she's reading you as much as you're reading her right now, and that scares you a little. Your greatest strength, aside from running away or kidney punching people, is being non-descript. You can feel her eyes looking to your... well, not your SOUL, the way Satoru did, but she's trying to figure you out.

"I'm Kia, in case you didn't remember. Kia Alani. From Hawaii. Only one in my family to be accepted here!" She takes another bite. "Sooooooo how are you liking things here so far?"

Write-in
Good food.
Pretty girls.
Fights to be won.
Whats there not to like?
>>
Writing. You seem to like food and hate being judged.
>>
"It's great that I can get free food whenever I want." You try to keep a jovial tone as you take a bite of the meatloaf. This stuff is really good, whatever people might think about how it looks.

"Oh? You seem like you get enough to eat. I mean, you aren't a beefcake or anything, but..."

You interrupt her. "What's your angle here, Miss Alani? You've been sizing me up the whole time you've been here."

The small girl seems to shrink a bit, then responds, "Sorry, I'm... I'm sorry. I need to find a partner and I'm trying to figure out who the best fit is. You know you're the first person who realized I was up to something?" She takes another, smaller bite of food. "Honestly, I don't want to end up being gimped because my Meister can't handle me. You're one of two people who don't seem like a shoe-in for the NOT curriculum, so... I thought I'd come talk to you."

She seems genuine, suddenly.

>"Hey, it's all right. I understand where you're coming from."
>"Knock it off. I'm fine with or without a partner."

"NOT curriculum? The hell is that?" You thought all students were just... students, here?"

"Oh, wow. You really ARE a virgin here. Okay, listen. The basics are: If you're a bad-ass, you're part of the EAT group, and get to go on missions and make pretty little girls like ME," she poses for dramatic effect, "Into a Death Scythe, Lord Death's personal armory. The NOT class is considerably weaker, and is mostly taught how to control their power so they can live a normal life."

You go to take another bite, but you're out of meatloaf. Damn.

"Look, you're cute, Kia, but we won't know if we're compatible until we fight together."

She looks you dead in the eyes, just for a moment, then takes her last bite of meatlof herself. "Okay then, tomorrow in class. Me and you. We'll wreck everyone else. That sound good, Mr. Starbrine?"

She bats her eyelashes at you. Damnit, she's trying to play the cute card. If you were a lesser man, your dick would probably have fallen for it.

"What sort of weapon are you, anyways?"

You're partly curious and partly wondering how she could offer a partnership so... forwardly.

"Well, I'm a spear. A pretty flexible one, too. Cut better than any sword, I guarantee." She locks eyes with you again. Damn, she's cute. "So, we gonna do it, or not?"

This has to be on purpose.

"How do I know you don't have a similar deal with every guy in class?"

Kia fakes a hurt look. "Mr. Starbrine, I am SHOCKED you would ever accuse such a pure girl as myself of such..." she slows down as she sees your unmoving stare. "No, I've only asked you. I talked with a few others, but... they aren't interesting at all. Like... one is only here because his parents forced him! How effective is HE going to be?"

You consider this. It's the first time she seems to be speaking honestly with you, but then again, she could just be THAT devious.

>>
>>719497
>actual prompts rather than a fucking "what do you do".
Yep, most QMs pull this off at all.
>>
You relent, slightly. I guess she deserves a chance, especially after dropping the cutesy act for a minute.

"All right, just ONE spar together, then we reassess."

Kia positively SQUEALS with delight and throws her arms around you. She smells nice.

"Thank you! You won't regret it, I'm sure. We'll kick some ass together! Just don't forget, I get to pop your cherry, okay?"

She slides out of her chair and goes to take her plate to the trash area. How can such a small girl be so... so... ugh.

You take your plate to the trash as well and head back to your dorm. You find yourself lying awake, looking at the ceiling.

"What am I even DOING here?" You muse to yourself. I mean, just a few days ago, you were planning on how to steal Caelin's stash of copper so you could eat a few days in peace, and now... you're not only set for the foreseeable future, but there's girls hitting on you and you might be helping to train the personal weapon of a LITERAL FUCKING GOD.

What DO you want out of this?

I see it as just an abstract status of being well off and never having to worry about being on the streets or stealing to survive.
Not necessarily all about money but also looking for prestige and power and maybe some social status
>>
>>719541
I meant it more in being 'close enough to the top of the food chain that no one screws with you'
In terms of power, economic status, and whatnot. The polar opposite of being a street thief.
>>
>>719541
We wanna be on top anon. Ain't no one gonna not know who we are by the time we're done. And we'll have all the things to prove it.
>>
"I want my name to be remembered. I want people to react at the name Tony Starbrine. And... I want to be at the top while I'm still alive."

You don't know why you say that aloud, but you suddenly don't care. You've spent your entire life sitting at the bottom, feeding on the flotsam of those better-off than you. You want to feel what it's like to be the best, the chosen, the fucking WORTHY. You have a clear goal to that, and no one is going to take it away from you.

You slowly drift off to sleep, with dreams of witch grandmothers and piles of cash and sexy women... and a small, tanned girl... to make you happy.

END DAY 1

Kia think's you have what it takes.

Robert thinks you try too hard (He thinks that about everyone)

Asuka (long braided hair) thinks you're beneath her notice

Shinobu (shy bookish girl) thinks you're too loud, but you're kinda cute.

Lord Death hasn't really noticed you, aside from seeing that you stayed away from the others.

Kirara Braun (The instructor) has you pegged as a troublemaker.

Satoru Keichi worries about when your Witch Soul will become a problem, but he knows Lord Death won't care.

So, how'd I do on my first quest segment? I'll stick around for questions, comments, complaints about the waifu selection, etc.

>>719572
Nope, because I suck. If anyone wants to throw pictures out, go for it, but I'm not very good about that. Besides, the waifus are much more attractive when you can customize them in your head. Just remember, Kia is 5 foot nothing, maaaaybe a small B cup, and has dark blonde hair. I'll go into detail about the others as you get closer to them, but Kia is a VERY aggressive woman, so you really didn't have a choice.

Step 6. Learn time stop
Step 7. Seduce a gay priest into building you a cult

>>
>>719740
Comes later, not that it matters a whole lot. If you were a girl, I'd have given you a list:

Dog: Enhanced senses
Cat: Enhanced acrobatics for a short time, physical attacks deal lethal damage
Turtle: Soul Protect, letting you be sneaky
Gecko: Soul Heat, making you stronger as a fight went on, but you were incapacitated afterwards (burned through all your energy during the fight)
Salamander: Flaming palm spell, but cannot be channeled through a weapon, at least at first.

If y'all want to come up with something better/cooler, go for it. It literally doesn't matter at the moment, because, despite your heritage, you're a blank slate, magic-wise.
>>
Also, to anyone who reads this: There is no waifu lock, even after you choose a partner. You can always romance someone other than your Weapon. It's just... you regularly come into contact with the Soul of your weapon, s you'll understand them better than most people will.

Basically, not a route lock, but indicitave of your preferences. A lot of past Death Scythes were created by their spouses or future spouses. You have a while before you choose a permanent partner, so if you have a favorite, do not despair! Just vote how you think Tony will and we'll be fine. Thank you all for participating!
>>
Still awake and intoxicated at 2 AM, consider this:

What sort of fighter should Tony become?

Does he get in close, stay at range, or play things tricky? (All are possible with his background).

What style of weapon works with this? More importantly, what PERSONALITY works with this? It doesn't matter if your weapon is a boot dagger, if they're a coward, their personality will lend them to being a better ranged fighter than a melee one.
>>
>>719859
I'd imagine, as a petty thief/street rat, adaptability would be key.

Though cautionary fighter could be expected, given the nature of pickpocketing, so definitely not a berserker-type.

Weapons wise? Well, funnily enough, a spear. It's a nice defensive weapon, as is a naginta or any polearm really. A bardiche, perhaps?

Oh, throwing knives would work too, since knives are GREAT at ultra-close range, and throwing them can function at medium ranges. Not even trying to reference Dio here.

Traps may work too.
>>
>>719867
Funny, you're met a knife-type already.

They aren't too big on combat. I'll let you decide who that is.
>>
>>719768
Can we be a Wolf?
can we get Black Blood?
>>
>>720122

Also, if you ever get that, things have gone REALLY far outside my framework.

It is possible that your Witch ancestor was a Wolf, though.
>>
You awake to the sound of an alarm shoving your eardrums in with tiny, forceful hands. You have a minor crisis moment until you remember that you aren't in a shelter, or under an overpass, but in a fancy school where you don't have to scrape a living together.

You take a shower (you have a small bathroom attached to your dorm), brush your teeth, and get dressed in an identical set of tan and black training clothes.

What was up with that girl last night, Kia? Was she coming on to you? Trying to play you? Whatever the case, you made a sorta-promise to partner together for at least one spar. She said she was a spear? Was that comment about being flexible more innuendo, or did that mean something?

You mull these points over as you walk to the cafeteria. You're surprised to see only a few students eating; you'd thought that, with free food available, there would be more people taking advantage of it. You carefully stack a pyramid of bacon and scrambled eggs onto your plate and go to sit. You scan the room quickly.

There's that serious girl, the one with the long braid. She's alone, but she has a magazine of some sort. You also see the Incredible Slug himself, Robert, walking with his eyes still closed towards the food nearby. There's also plenty of space to make it clear you don't want to be bothered, if you felt like it.

>Sit with the serious girl

>>Sit with the serious girl
>>
You head towards the serious girl. You take a moment to look her over as you get closer.

The first impression you get is that she comes from money. She's wearing an amethyst and silver bracelet on her left wrist. If she had come into your part of town with that on, SOMEONE would have assaulted her on the spot for that alone. She's also very attractive, in a classical sense. You also can't help but notice that she's... well, much more developed than Kia is. There's a joke here about being well-bred, but the thought turns and runs as she locks eyes with you on your approach.
You involuntarily freeze. Those are the eyes of someone who has had to fight before. This isn't some pampered princess.

"Can I help you?"

You shake the chill off and sit down across from her.

>"Just scoping out my classmates."
>"Eating together is more fun than eating alone?"

You ignore the question entirely, focusing on her magazine. "What do you have there? Magazine?"

"Yes." She closes it without breaking eye contact. "It's a trade magazine about security systems."

"Are you... interested in those?" You slowly reply.

"No."

Well, this got awkward. Who the hell reads something they aren't interested in?

She sighs. "Sorry, I'm not a morning person. You're making an attempt, I guess." She reaches a hand out. "Asuka Hayama. Nice to meet you, Mister.>?"

"Tony Starbrine. Tony is fine." You shake her hand. You notice that, despite her soft appearance, her hands are somewhat rough. Interesting. "I find that mornings are more bearable when I have decent food in front of me."

"Oh? You don't always have breakfast?" Those intense eyes are on you again.

You give a wry smile. "Hard to manage food when you have to fight like a jackal for it." You punctuate the statement by shoveling sausage into your mouth.
Asuka's expression twitches, like she thinks she hit a nerve, but you don't particularly mind talking about it. She hesitates before continuing. "Fight like a jackal? What do you mean?"

You swallow. Damn, it's good to get a full meal. "I was homeless. Dropped out of school not too long ago. Had to recycle scrap, panhandle, and commit petty theft to get by. Actually, that's how I ended up here. I tried to steal a Demon Weapon off of a Meister's hip."

Asuka looks at you like you've grown a third head. "Tried? How far did you get?"

"About half a block, before she turned into a human and pinned me. I'm just glad they thought it was amusing instead of being vengeful."

You point with your fork. "Anyone ever tell you that you're super intense? I feel like your eyes are gonna shoot laser any moment."

Asuka blinks, then leans back quickly. "I... yes. I have heard similar complaints about my demeanor." She finally breaks eye contact, glancing down at the magazine again.

Ah crap, maybe she took that the wrong way?

You hold up a hand before she beats herself up more. "It's fine, I'm just not used to people being interested in my life."

Asuka looks at you again, without the laser-focus, for once. "You're sure?"

"I'm sure. Don't worry about it."

She smiles, faintly. "Then I won't worry about it." She takes the last bite of egg from her plate and stands. "You should finish. Class starts in fifteen minutes, and we shouldn't be late on the first day."

You watch her walk off. Working hands, super intense, probably rich, and reads material she doesn't like? This girl is full of contradictions, but she seems nice.

You wolf down the remainder of food on your plate and leave the cafeteria. You stop at a map on the wall to orient yourself, and head to classroom A.

You're just turning the last corner when you feel your danger sense tingling. An attack, from behind. You have a fraction of a second to react.

You snap forward and down, rolling across the floor to put some distance between you and the oncoming strike. As you pop up, facing your assailant... you hear a SMACK.

A short, tanned girl is laying face down on the floor in front of you.

"The most hated enemies of our order are cute girls, so you can't be too careful, can you?"

Kia pulls herself to a sitting position. "Not always. Some are old hags with skin like raisins."

You sigh. "Well, don't sneak up on me like that. I nearly kicked you instead of getting out of the way."

The small girl's face drops a bit. Ah crap.

"Do you assault every guy you have a conversation with, or am I just that special?" You grin a little.

"No! I just wanted to make sure no one else tried to get you to wield them before I had a chance!"

You turn around and walk towards class. "Well, if we don't hurry, you won't have a chance at all." You might be a dropout, but you know the importance of being on time.

You hear a cute groan as Kia pulls herself to her feet and follows you in.

The room is a semi-circle, with rows of desks, set up so people can be paired together. You're just barely in before the bell, so most of the seats are filled. There's two spots that stand out to you: One is next to the shy girl from last night. She's fidgeting with her hands and looking around like a small rodent caught in a cage. You have to wonder if she'll even be able to handle combat. The other open spot is next to... Slug boy. Who seems to be asleep already. Well, at least sitting there will be peaceful.

When you look at Medusa in the source material, that is a completely reasonable idea to have. However, Tony doesn't know how awful some witches are yet.

Looks like we're gonna meet the shy girl.
>>
You decide to sit next to the nervous girl. Slug boy is probably going to attract the teacher's attention by sleeping, and you don't want to be near that at all.

You sit in the wooden chair. The girl jumps a little as you scrape it across the tile below you, and you can see her eying you in what she must assume is a covert manner, before she notices you're also watching her. She lets out a small squeak and turns forward suddenly, her fidgeting speed doubled.

You're considering talking to her, but the door suddenly opens. The instructor from the day before walks in.

"Hello, class. I will be your professor until you are sorted into either the EAT or NOT programs. My name is Kirara Braun. Please, address me as Miss Braun.

She walks behind the desk at the front. "I see that everyone is here, so I will skip roll call for now. We're going to jump right into the important stuff today: Which program is right for you?"

She leans forward. "The NOT class, which stands for Normally Overcoming Target, is all about learning to control and live with your special abilities. As a person with control over your Soul, however small, you could be a target for all sorts of bad people. You will learn basic self-defense, how to control and channel your soul, and how to respond when people find out about your abilities."

Miss Braun straightens up and begins to circle the desk again.

"The EAT class, which stands for Especially Advantaged Talent, will consist of those who have the ability and inclination to stand against the forces that Lord Death has opposed since time immemorial. Witches. Humans who devour human souls, called Kishin Eggs. Immortals. There are many threats, and we at the DWMA fight them all. The EAT class is not mandatory, and any one of you may leave it at any time.If you wish to be a part of it, however, you'll need to prove yourself... which is why we're here today."

She stops in front of the desk again. "I need two Weapons and two Meisters, that are interested in the EAT class. First come, first serve."

You see Kia jump up and head for the front, catching your eye as she goes. Looks like it's time to make good on your promise?

Surprisingly, the nervous girl next to you gets up as well.

Welp, you didn't think it would come so soon, but a part of you isn't surprised at all. You stand and walk over to Kia, who grabs onto your arm.

"I'm so excited, this is my first time being wielded!" she whispers to you.

You hope very strongly that it isn't, like, losing your virginity. This girl is clingy enough.

You look over at the nervous girl, and see that a tall, scrawny scarecrow of a boy with orange-red hair is next to her. The girl can't seem to decide if she wants to move away from him or not.

"Please, introduce yourselves to the class." She gestures to Kia.

"Hello everyone! I'm Kia Alani, and I'm gonna be in the EAT class!"

You guess it's your turn. "Tony Starbrine, Meister, I guess." Not like you had a speech prepared.

Miss Braun motions to the nervous girl. "S-Sh-Shinobu Kuroko, weapon. Nice to meet you all." She performs a very deep, shaky bow.

The redheaded scarecrow doesn't wait. "Steven Chesapeake." He glowers at you. Did you piss him off somehow?

Miss Braun nods. "Very well. Weapons, please transform. Meisters, ready positions."

Kia glows for a moment before shifting into a long haft. You reach out and grab hold, and the glow fades. You are holding a long, strong piece of some kind of bamboo. There's an obsidian spearhead and what looks like leaves around the base of it.

You glance up, and see Shinobu has changed... into a very large shield, so silver and shiny you can see yourself in it. Steven looks a bit irritated, but readies himself behind it.

Oh, right, you're supposed to fight.

You aren't quite sure what to do, but you... just try to feel Kia through the bamboo in your hands.

Suddenly, it feels right. It's like you're holding her, and she's holding you.

"You're surprisingly gentle, you know? I heard that it is supposed to hurt the first time."

Kia's voice is in your head? Or are you in her's? You can feel her soul, close to your own, but different. Her soul burns and vibrates, and you'd probably have been scorched if you hadn't... well, done whatever you did.

"I don't know how I did that, but it's working," you reply. "Can I keep going?"

You can feel Kia shrug. "I'll stop you if it hurts. Let's see how far we can push this!"

You snap back to your main senses, and focus. You let the heat from Kia's soul fill your arms, and you feel her drawing your own into her. This... this feels good. Not in a perverted way, despite Kia's innuendo, but this is the first time you've felt actual POWER in your life.

You can feel a spark, at the barrier between your soul and Kia's.

Miss Braun looks at you, apparently sensing what is happening. "Are you okay, Mr. Starbrine?"

You nod, and push the building heat back into Kia's haft. The leaves at the end burst into flame, and the obsidian head glows red with power and flame. Steven suddenly looks incredibly unsure about this.

"Let's rock."

You leap forward, swinging the burning tip of Kia's blade at the reflective surface in front of you. Steven tries to angle to deflect, but your strike is too sudden and he's still trying to come to grips with the situation. He barely stays on his feet as you smack the silvery barrier out of the way, and use Kia's flexibility to whip her around for a smack with her haft to the side of his head.

Steven sprawls on the ground, but quickly gets up and charges, growling like an animal. You need his advance, stepping inside and under the swing he aims at your head with Shinobu's side, and ram him in the gut with your shoulder. There's a satisfying WHOOSH of air as Steven bounces off you you, landing on the ground again.

"Holy shit, Tony! We're kicking ass!"

You nod. "I have no god damn idea how, but this is awesome."

Steven tries to catch his breath, and seems to be arguing with Shinobu silently. You allow him to stand and ready himself again.

You charge again, but jab Kia into the ground at the last moment to change the angle of attack. Steven might be mad, confused, and still out of breath, but he brings Shinobu up, trying to anticipate your strike. You swing the flaming spearhead hard, sending a loud CLANG through the room. You feel yourself repelled, but Steven slides backwards as well, falling to one knee behind the shield.

"Three downs. Mr. Starbrine and Miss Alani are the winners!" Miss Braun steps in between you and Steven before you can continue the assault.

"Tony, Kia, you should be fine in the EAT program. Please see me after class, as well." She turns to Steven and Shinobu, who has changed back and looks terrified. "That was a good effort, Steven, but you relied FAR too much on Shinobu to carry you through. You can't just charge in like an animal and expect to win. Shinobu, you did well. In fact, if you were nearly any other type of weapon, I suspect Steven would be headed for the nurse. I will recommend both of you for the EAT class, but be careful and try to overcome your weaknesses."

Shinobu looks relieved, but Steven just scowls harder. "Yes Miss" they both say together.

Kia changes back and immediately jumps onto your back. "That was SO COOL! You HAVE to have done that before!"

"No, this was the first time, I swear!" You're trying to keep calm, but you can feel your face flushing. You've never been praised for fighting, never been told you were GOOD at anything, and, to top it off, it was by a cute, if somewhat annoying, girl.

You manage to peel her off of you and return to your seat, and Miss Braun calls for two more pairs.

Shinobu slides into the seat next to you. You can tell she's worried.

You should probably defuse her before she explodes from anxiety. You hold a hand out to the shivering mess next to you. "Hey, good fight. You're pretty tough, you know?"

Shinobu flinches a bit at your voice, but shakes your hand. "You think so? I've only been in one fight before... and it didn't go so well either."

"Yeah, I had to hit really hard to get you out of the way. If you were wielded by someone who was used to you... I'd get creamed."

You're probably exaggerating a bit, but Shinobu perks up slightly. "Thank you! I'm still not used to transforming either. The first time I tried, I left my clothes-" She shuts up suddenly and blushes.

Oh.

You notice that Asuka and some blue-haired beefcake at the front, across from Slugboy and a... well, a well-endowed girl with long light brown hair. She has a slightly dreamy smile on her face.

You look back at Shinobu. "So how did you get here, anyways?"

She looks away for a moment, then responds. "I got in a fight. Someone attacked me, and I should have died, but I transformed instead. I don't even know how I did it... no one in my family can do it, either. Apparently, someone found out about me and I decided to come here."

The fight has begun at the front. You didn't catch the Meister's names, but Blue-hair is now holding a katana. That must be Asuka. She's... pretty plain like this, actually. Even her hilt is just charcoal black.

Looking over at the other two... The brunette girl is holding a knife that curves inward... you think it was called a kukri?

"Begin!"

"ORAAAAA!" Blue-hair lunges forward, nearly catching Brown-hair off guard as she tries to acclimate to her weapon. She bounces backwards lightly, but has a slight frown on her face. Blue-hair slices quickly, cutting the air around Brown-hair as she dodges.

Then, she drops her weapon and strikes low.

Her palm catches Blue-hair in the gut, and he freezes... and slumps over. He's clearly awake, just... immobile.

"Stop! The winner is Miss Lange and Mr. Krall."

Miss Braun walks over to Blue-hair and Asuka, who changes back. "Did you not learn from the last fight? Charging in without a plan is a bad idea. Still, you show potential. Asuka, you seemed on-point. Good control of your wavelength."

She walks over to Miss Lange and the still-transformed Robert.

"Mr. Krall, wake up." She kicks the knife, and he transforms back, laying on his back. Robert sits up and yawns. "Sleeping during a fight is unacceptable. Detention, after school. One hour."

She turns to Miss Lange. "That was an advanced technique. I can't say I like how you abandoned your partner, but you still won. Well done." She turns again, heading back to the center of the room. "New pairs, please!

Well, that was... a thing.

There's not a whole lot else interesting. There's a few more fights, but nothing spectacular, and you're feeling tired from blasting your soul's power like you did. Shinobu seems to be calmer around you, at least, but she doesn't seem to want to talk much.

Finally, class ends.

"All right, people, those of you still interested in the EAT class, meet back here tomorrow. Otheriwse, you have a day off. Dismissed!"

Students begin to file out. Shinobu whispers a goodbye as she shuffles along.

"Maybe she's angry about something? We could have burned down the school." You shrug.

You stay quiet. Kia likes talking, right?

"Well, we made me catch on fire?" She seems to be a bit more wary after your trepidation earlier.

"Yes, but, more importantly, you reached the first stage of a technique called Soul Resonance. You feed your wavelength into the other, with complete trust and synchronization, greatly amplifying your power for a short time and causing any number of effects, based on the people involved." She pauses. "It can take students years to reach the level you two instinctively stumbled into. I honestly don't know what to think, here."

She taps a finger on the side of her face.

"I think you should both talk with Lord Death about this. I just sort students and do paperwork. This is above my pay grade, honestly."

Meet with Lord Death? Uh...

"Do I have a choice?"

Miss Braun gives you a strange look. "Of course you do. Look, this is just a strange circumstance, but you've displayed power well above a level you can easily control, and... well, I'm concerned about what that might do."

Yep, makes total sense... not really.

"So, are we in trouble, or not?" Kia asks, mirroring your own thoughts.

"No, you aren't in trouble. I'm just... concerned. Lord Death can explain why, better than I can."

You shrug. "Sure, then. Why not? I've only set a girl on fire and beat a scarecrow half to death, might as well round the day out with meeting the God of Death himself!"

Kia looks at you like she wants to say something, but... she is speechless, for once.

Miss Braun begins to walk. "Come on then, it isn't far."

Kia clings to your arm as you walk. She's just as nervous as you are, it seems.

>"He seemed nice yesterday, right?"

You look down at the islander girl. "He seemed nice yesterday, right? We're probably not completely boned... I think."

Kia looks up at you and tries to smile. It seems forced. "I was supposed to break the chain."

Come again?

She reads the confusion on your face. "My family... Most of us have come here, at one point or another. Every one of us has ended up in the Death Room on the first day of class. I was supposed to be the good kid... but I guess my family is cursed after all. They're going to be so disappointed."

"It's not like we did anything wrong, I think?" You wish you were more certain of that. "We'll be okay."

Kia loosens her grip after that.

Soon, you find yourself walking through what appears to be a mirror, and under a series of arches that remind you of a Japanese temple... but as you look up, you see razor-sharp blades at the top of each, giving the impression of guillotines. Fitting.

You emerge into a room with a blue sky, somehow, and a black platform surrounded by spindly crosses. A black form stands in the center. It waves a big goofy foam hand at you.

"Hey, hiya, how are ya! To what do I owe the pleasure, Kirara?"

Miss Braun clears her throat. Must not like her first name. "Sir, these two students achieved a rudimentary Soul Resonance, within seconds of their first combat."

The big goofy foam skull peers at you. You can feel Kia try to shrink into herself next to you. "First combat together, or in general?"

"Both." Miss Braun replies, coolly.

"Hmm. Yes, I can see how that might be worrysome..." He trails off.

>"We won't do it again, sir."

"Back off, man." You poke your finger into Lord Death's spongy face, eliciting a gasp from both Kia and Miss Braun. "I don't see the problem here, but if there is one, I caused it. Punish me, if anything."

Miss Braun looks quite angry, and she steps towards you. "How DARE you disrespect-"

"Well, Miss Braun, you may go. I'll deal with this myself."

Miss Braun seems conflicted, but gives in. "Yes, Lord Death." She walks quickly back through the guillotine arches.

As soon as the door shuts, you hear Lord Death give out a long sigh. "Well, now that the Fun Police is gone, let me tell you something. What you two did was extraordinary. Don't feel bad about it."

What? Then why-

"Miss Braun is a weapon, but she can no longer transform." He holds up a foam finger" I won't spill all her secrets, but... suffice to say, she pushed for too much power, too fast, and it... I guess you could say she burnt out. Her partner found another weapon to wield, and she was left behind. Seeing you two pulling off such a powerful resonance might have brought some bad memories to the front." Lord Death puts a hand on the top of each of your heads. "Just promise to be careful. Don't push yourselves too hard. If you get tired, rest. If you get injured, heal. We lose too many on the road to strength as it is."

The large figure straightens back up. "Also, young Tony, you're a brave man to poke me like that. Bravery is good, but remember that I could kill every being in this city, were I so inclined." He holds up his hands in a protective gesture. "Not that I will! I mean, I'm just strong enough to, is all. My point is, don't go poking gods in the face unless you're reasonable sure you can win, hm?"

You aren't sure if this guy is for real. He talks WAY too informally to be.

Kia speaks up. "So... are we free to go?"

Lord Death cocks his head at her. "Yes, yes, you can! If Miss Braun gives you any grief about today, just come find me again and I'll set her straight!"

You begin to leave, glancing back at the strange figure. He waves.

What the actual fuck is this place?

You find yourself in the main hall. Kia is still with you.

"So, that went well."

She seems to have some color in her face again. Wait, is she blushing?

"You tried to save me, in there. I mean, we weren't in danger, but..." she seems unsure of what to say.

"Can we be partners, at least for the time being? We're strong together, anyways."

"Sure! I was actually going to ask you!" You smile, in spite of yourself. Wielding a flaming fuck-you stick was pretty sweet, and Kia isn't ALWAYS irritating...

"Really? That's... Okay! Partners, then!" She smiles back at you, and for the first time, you don't see any trace of the usual impish grin, just a genuine happiness. She finally lets go of your arm. "I have some things to take care of, but... I'll see you at dinner?"

You check the map. You're feeling much better than you did before, so you guess that your soul is recovered or however that works. Thinking about it, you got pretty worn out from just thirty seconds of Resonance. Gotta be careful with that.

You notice the Gym on the map, and set off towards it.

You walk into a surprisingly normal-looking gym, with lots of fancy equipment and weights and other things you aren't even sure of.

There's a few older students towards the back, lifting weights (and taking selfies). You also see Asuka running on a treadmill. Next to her are some strange-looking pots with water in them. A warning sign is up near them. Must be something special for training your soul?

Well, you might be ahead of the curve, physically, but that's the best time to widen the gulf between you and the others.

You get on the treadmill next to Asuka (there's only three, and one is out of order) and start a nice, steady pace.

You let your mind wander as you plod along, the machine slowly altering the speed and angle of your run.

Kia comes into your head first. She's cute, and bubbly, and you're pretty sure there's the start of something... something there, anyways, but you've known her less than a day. At least you're compatible as a weapon.

Thinking about compatibility reminds you of how Steven was swinging Shinobu around like a brick trying to hit you. The guy has strength, especially for his wiry frame, but... you feel bad for the girl. Maybe you can offer to practice with her, so she can get used to someone who is actually trying to apply her correctly?

You spare a glance over at Asuka, who looks equally lost in thought. She's a mystery, all right. You wonder what her deal is... Her weapon form was a katana, too. Very traditional, very proper. No decorations or flashiness, very unlike the spear Kia becomes. You wonder if that is a reflection of the person, or just sorta random.

You realize that you don't know a lot about how any of this stuff works. You powered through your first day with sheer grit and will, but that won't be enough to succeed entirely. You resolve to hit the library after dinner.

Time passes, Asuka leaves, and your legs feel like rubber, so it's a good time to stop. You head into the shower for a moment, then put on some casual clothes: A black t-shirt and green shorts. It's dinner time.

You enter the cafeteria to several looks from older students, some curious, some irritated. Looks like word is getting out.

You grab a plate of lasagna and look around. Kia isn't here yet, but there's no empty tables. Asuka is sitting with the blue-haired beefcake from before, and Shinobu is sitting alone, reading. You also see Steven, but he is done eating and about to leave.

"You know, I-"

"TOOOOONYYYYYYYY!"

Impeccable timing, Kia.

She slams down next to you, with a full plate, and starts eating. "Oh hey Shinobu, reading again?"

"Yeah. It isn't very good, but what can you do?"

Kia points her fork at Shinobu. "Listen, you shouldn't read that if it doesn't do anything for you. There's a whole library here!"

The shy girl nods. "I know, but my parents got it for me and I'd feel bad if I didn't at least try."

Shinobu seems to be much more comfortable talking with girls.

"Sooooooo Tony, cheating on me already?" Kia's face twists in mock pain. "I thought we had something SPECIAL."

Shinobu looks genuinely concerned.

Kia snorts into her food. "We just met yesterday, girl. What kind of person do you think I am?"

"Do these idiots really think I'd still be here if I tried something like that? Lord Death could kill me in like fifty different ways before I can blink!"

Kia grabs your hand. "Listen, Tony, you don't need to listen to that garbage. Success breeds contempt, and here you are, sitting with the two CUTEST girls in the school, after achieving Soul Resonance, and meeting with Lord Death, all in the same day. So FUCK 'EM!"

You're quiet. How do you feel?

>Better. Kia and Shinobu have your back.
>Spiteful. You're gonna get even stronger, just to give them MORE to gossip about.

You feel... better. You've never really had anyone who cared how you felt, So this... is new. If you weren't surrounded by people staring daggers, you might cry a little.

You put an arm around each of them and pull them into a hug. Kia wraps her tiny arms around you back. Shinobu stiffens, but leans slightly towards you after a moment. You laugh again, but much less manic than before.

"If this is what they're saying after one day, imagine the rumors after a month?"

Kia and Shinobu giggle at that, and you let them go.

A dark thought crosses your mind... You'll probably have to tell your partner, whoever they are, about your lineage, but hopefully they'll understand.

END OF SESSION

Kia has feelings for you, but she's also aware that very little time has passed.

Shinobu thinks you're nice, but loud. She still appreciates your attempts to make friends.

Asuka is laser-focused on you, after that fight. She wants to catch up, badly.

Robert is already asleep. The fire was neat, but his partner was kind of a bitch.

Blue-Hair thinks you're awesome.

Steven has a grudge.

Miss Lange wants to see what you're made of.

Kirara Braun doesn't like you.

Lord Death thinks you're interesting. He will be watching.

I'll be around for a bit, but I gotta get ready for work.

Also, any feedback at all would be great. This is my first quest, so I don't know if I'm making things interesting or fun. Obviously, time won't always be so slow, but this is an important period to characterize Tony and his peers, as well as show the process of being accepted as an EAT student. The ridiculous luck with Kia moved at least one plot point much faster than otherwise, but I felt like I rolled with it well.

Tony "The warlock" Starbrine vs Steven "Scarecrow" Chesapeake

The first battle begins when

Also, how hard is it for meisters to get 2 weapons?
>>
>>721482
I feel like you have a tendency to focus on what's directly in front of you and that's understandable and you have some great moments because of it but you might put a tad more effort into setting the scene outside of the characters.

Like just bringing in a little more detail than just a gym or the like ya know?
Sometimes it came up later but seemed basically like an afterthought that got tacked on.

All that said I'm really enjoying my time here so far and I think this quest and you have some real potential.
>>
>>721482
I'd say get some images
Not necessarily of the original characters but more of the different areas and maybe some of Death when we run into him
>>
>>721512
2 weapons... well, it depends.

On the one hand, you could have no trouble at all. The Accommodating Soul perk would have helped, but is not required. It depends on how close you three are. In the series, it worked so well for Kid because of his symmetry obsession and the fact that the pair were twins. You have the potential, but it will take work and strain your soul, at least at first. Improving your relationship between you three is the biggest help.

>>721518
Thanks for the tips! I'll be sure to work on that.

I was looking over my notes, and I realized something... If you guys can pull off a Triad Resonance with Kia and Shinobu... You would be pretty much unstoppable, as long as you can maintain it. You're gonna work for it, but if you wanna dual-wield waifus and combine their power, it's totally worth it.

Kia's power is based on something firey, and you had a taste of what Shinobu can do. See if you can guess.
>>
Another thing is that Soul Eater seems to work on the opposites attract for weapons and meisters so we should be able to work well with either of them being they are both opposites of Tony, if on different ends of the spectrum
>>
>>721536
Also I really like how you describe what the characters think abut us at the end of the thread
>>
>>721792
I got that idea from Shinigami Savant, but it's actually a special power of the Street Rat background. You'll also notice that Tony reads people's body language and emotional state very easily. His life on the street has made him hyper-aware of such things. You need to read a mark, know how to tug heartstrings for a handout, and see when that biker dude is actually going to murder you or if he's all talk.
>>
>>721756
I still dont understand our power.

I agree that waifuing is always dangerous, but i have faith in anons who seemed to pick kia because of our character's stated goal of power rather than simple first-girl waifu syndrome. Its a fun quest, i get the same positive vibe from this quest as Dark Gate Academy quest
>>
>>722880
I mean I didn't vote, but I agree that someone we can resonate with so easily is a great weapon choice.

Yeah DGA is a great example on how to write a bunch of sexually inclined teens.
We have the moments of high school fun times, but they are blended with the Dark World in the sense that our ability to survive was based on getting to know the characters and trying to interact with all of them.
The secret to managing Waifu wars in my opinion is too give us better things to care about, and taking away the ability to single out one particular girl in the first place.
We may have ended up with the first girl in the end, but by the time our decision was made every girl had multiple times to show their stuff, and everyone liked each of our options enough to accept the direction we were going and then move on to the next pressing issue.

My fear for this quest is because we have the consept of partnership between Man and Weapon and the whole thing being a huge inuendo for sex, that we wont be able to take any girl we dont partner with seriously. Regardless of weither you like Kia or not she is our partner, so we will be spending more time with her than any other girl. The people that love her now will continue to love her and want to choose options that let us spend more time with her. The people that are in the middle will grow to love her because of how much time we will be forced to spend with her. And the people that hate her will rage against the other two groups of people because this dumb bitch they dont like is taking screen time away from their favorite girl.
>>
>>723106
Still, it'd be IC idiocy to NOT team with the weapon we got instant sync with.
>>
>>723106
Dark Gate Academy is boring cliched garbage though.
>>
>>723106
>We may have ended up with the first girl in the end

So fucking glad i dropped that.
Idiots didn't have the sense to choose best girl Rei.
>>
>>723116
Pretty much this.
If it were any result other than a 90->100 id be pissy, but as other anons have pointed out, it's completely in character to take the weapon that practically guarantees us to be in the upper echelons of prodigies, geniuses, and whatnot. And given it was complete chance, it's not like the QM was scheming behind a wall with his hands clasped for his pseudo-loli islander waifu.

Odd as it is, this is a completely coincidental, non-stupidity induced first-girl syndrome, and it doesn't necessarily have to be instant-waifu if we dont want it to go that way. This could have happened with the first girl, or the thirtieth, or not at all (completely reliant on nat 100).
>>
>>723185
Rei got put into a coma for months. She was a nonissue for pretty much until season 1 end.
>>
>>723116
Oh yeah of course
But that doesn't make the game any less rigged in Kai's favor.
Depending on how combat will work once we start going on our everyday missions Kai, by nature of being our partner, will have more screen time than the other girls in the quest.
More screen time equals more chances for character development equals more reasons to like this character over the others.

In DGA you went into combat with a quarter of your class at a time, and because of the nature of the Dark World, the QM could force situations in which girls we havent gotten a chance to talk too got the needed screen time to peak our interest and make us want to talk to them the next time the school segment came around.

A kite shield.

So, thank you guys for the discussion. I have plans to get other girls screen time. You won't have a permanent partner until you are ready to do missions more than classes. In fact, it is part of the early curriculum to have you try different partners, as you might learn bad habits if you just have one partner forever. You'll also learn the basics of single combat, for those times your partner is unavailable or indisposed.

In short, those of you who like Asuka or Miss Lange or Miss Braun (why) have a shot, and not just a token chance.

I noticed that too. There was no physical descriptors for Shinobu, while the others had at least a couple, albeit minor, physical traits described.
>>
>>723652
No main cast, aside from incidentals and Lord Death himself. This isn't Let's Metagame Soul Eater. Also, I don't trust myself to stay true to character.

As for more bro time, I didn't want to overwhelm you with characters right away. I knew you guys would want the ladies first, so I started with them. You'll get to chill with Slugboy.

Shinobu's description... My bad. I thought I had posted it. I'll have to work it in when I'm back at my notes.

Back this morning. Good thing I gave myself at least a day. Slept 12 hours.

Shinobu has medium-length black hair with a slight purple tint, pulled into a loose ponytail. She's average height, and seems to be of average build, though she has well-defined leg muscles, you noticed in class. She wears glasses when she reads.

>My fear for this quest is because we have the consept of partnership between Man and Weapon and the whole thing being a huge inuendo for sex

I just noticed this, here.

Kia made jokes about it, but wielding a weapon isn't sexual or binding at all. Developing the connection and trust to Resonate... is like having a relationship, but whether that relationship is love, lust, bros, family, or mutual hatred depends on the pair. What Kia and Tony did was Red Thread of Fate, love-at-first-sight kind of bullshit, because nothing about EITHER of them is conducive to this sort of connection: Kia has always felt apart from others, coming from a long line of Death Scythes, and has an expectation to reach the same goal, and Tony just plain doesn't trust people because trust leads to getting your ass taken advantage of on the street (I have been homeless twice in my life, I would know).

Anyways, trust in me a little bit. I may be a first-time QM, but I had a plan for screentime even before that glorious crit.

Oh, and a minor note on crits: I take 95-99 as a crit, 100 as a MEGA crit, and 1 as a MEGA failure, if the other two rolls do not exceed 50, I will use the 1. You have been notified.

1=Mega failure
Are 2-5 Crit fails?
>>
>>724587
No, and, like I said, a roll of over 50 otherwise will negate the mega fail. I don't want it to happen often, but when it does, it should be big.

There is a potential enemy who reverses the rules: 2-5 is a crit fail, 1 is a mega crit fail, rolls under 50 negate crit success
>>

>What Kia and Tony did was Red Thread of Fate
Stop that, stop that right now.

>Everybody's face when it happens with Shinobu or Asuka too

>>724611
I guess we will wind out when we roll to resonate with Shinobu. If we roll a crit or high we are natural pros, if not its lookin like we are gonna be locked into Kia in some special way or another. Reguardless of if we can use 2 weapons or not at once

I only have a few hours this morning.

Let's get through what we can and finish this thread. Posting in 10 minutes.
>>
You and the girls finish your food quickly, making small talk to brush off the heavy emotions from before. Shinobu seems to have a bit of an easier time talking to you.

After you all finish, Kia asks where you're going between then and curfew.

"Oh, I thought I'd check out the library, maybe study something."

"Study? On the first day?" Kia makes a face. "No thank you, I want to relax after all this. I'll be on the landing out front if you need me."

Kia does her little half-skipping jog away through the crowd of students leaving the cafeteria.

You feel a small tug on your sleeve. Looking over, you see Shinobu glancing downwards, saying something too quiet to hear.

"I'm sorry, I couldn't hear you..." You lean in a bit closer.

Shinobu drops your sleeve, but manages to make eye contact. "Umm... I... I know where the library is. I c-c-could show you, if y-you want."

Man, she folds like paper when Kia isn't around. Is she like this with all guys? All girls? You file that thought away for later and respond.

>"Lead the way. Wanna help me study a bit?"
>"Lead the way, but I don't wanna keep you from your night."

"Lead the way. Wanna help me study a bit?" You smile a little. "Was never really good at it myself."

For some reason, this causes Shinobu's blush to deepen. Is it because you asked for her help, or...? "Um... okay. Let's go."

She leads you by the sleeve to a grand room absolutely lined with books. There are piles of books on the ground, as though there's no one to curate the place. There's a few tables, some in the middle, and some tucked away to the sides, barely visible until you come directly upon them.

"S-so, what did you want to study about? I know we have a test as a part of our EAT qualifications, but I don't know what is on it..." The shy girl looks up at you. "Not that you have to worry. You and Kia have probably already made it in on today's results."

You think for a bit. You want to be on top. The best. Stands to reason you should at least try at this test, right?

Last session, there were a ton of votes for Library stuff rather than gym stuff, so I compromised and used that vote for after-dinner time.

"I want to study about the nature of Souls."

Shinobu nods, then sets off towards a section, seemingly at random, until she pulls a book out. "Here, this is the book I started with after my first, uh... incident." She looks down as she says that part, but perks up again. "It helped clarify a lot about what I was doing, even if it's mostly beginner-level material."

You look at the cover of the book. 'On Souls, and What They're Capable Of." Damn, you doubt there will be many pictures in this one.

You find a seat at one of the side tables, comfortably hidden behind a pile of books with foreign names. Shinobu returns shortly after with a small stack of her own. "If you need any clarification, or another book, just ask me!" She smiles, possibly the first time you've seen it. A part of you hopes it won't be the last time.

The book isn't too hard to read. It starts off telling you that all sentient beings have souls, even some kinds of monkeys, as well as it being possible for lower animals to sometimes be born with them. A Soul is the raw life force of existence, and just one regular human soul contains a considerable amount of it. However, there's no easy way to utilize this energy without killing the host.

Speaking of killing, when a being with a soul is killed with the Wavelength, or energy projected from the soul, of another being, their soul condenses into a tangible form. Human souls only hang around like this for a few minutes, but stronger ones can hold out longer.

Finally, a being can consume the souls of other beings, gaining more strength as they absorb the wavelength into themselves. The DWMA uses this process to make Death Scythes.

You blink. It's been about an hour, and you're getting tired. Shinobu looks engrossed in a white book with fancy lettering on it.

"Hey, Shinobu? Curfew is coming..."

"Oh... Oh! You're right!" She picks up her stack and heads off to put it back. You casually set your book onto the pile next to you and go to wait for Shinobu by the door.

She walks quickly over to you. "Um... I... I was thinking... do you think we could train a bit together, tomorrow after class? I... I want to be sure I can transform and fight all right before joining the EAT class... but the only experience I have was..." She looks down. "He wasn't very nice."

"Sounds good!" You see that rare smile again.

"All right, I'll see you then!" she says with more fire than you're used to hearing in her voice. You part ways in the hall outside and head back to your room.

As you enter, you notice two pieces of paper on your floor, slid under the door.

One is a folded sheet of lined paper. You open it and read:

"New blood. You should know how things work around here. Twenty bucks a week goes to Omar or your life is hell."

There's no signature. The fuck? Is there some kind of protection racket going on?

The envelope has a similarly short message in it, but in considerably better handwriting.

"Mr. Starbrine, I apologize for treating you and Miss Alani so roughly today. I will strive to be professional in the future. I forget sometimes that I am not the only one with bad memories.
Sincerely, Kirara Braun."

Huh. Well, that was unexpected.

You shower, do your business, and almost immediately pass out as your head hits the pillow.

The next day, after breakfast (with Kia, of course, Shinobu is present but busy reading that white book from last night), you find yourself in class. Half of the students from the day before are missing.

"All right, students. Today, we measure your knowledge and critical thinking skills. This test is the second part of your EAT qualifications. Don't worry about it if you don't know the answers to some things; this is just to understand where you are relative to a full EAT graduate." She passes out papers as she says this.

You gulp and pick up your pencil.

"Begin!"

You flip the paper. Hey, at least the first few are pretty easy stuff, like what a Meister does and so on. There's a bit about Souls, which you just studied. and then...

Then comes the impossible shit. You try to answer a few, but there's no way for you to have learned this stuff. You skip the section.

Now comes the problem solving. You take your time here, catching a few trick questions. You're proud of yourself.

Finally, there's a hypothetical. The prompt assures you that there is no right answer, but...

"Your partner is dying and unable to help you. There's a giant monster bearing down on you, and there's a gigantic human soul next to you. Do you consume the soul to gain great strength at the cost of humanity, fight the creature without the extra power, grab your partner and run, or leave your partner and run?

You happen to notice that, instead of being a true multiple choice, there's a small spot to write in an answer.

You think for a minute. You'd want to save your partner, that's for certain. Your mind conjured up thoughts of Kia and Shinobu, bloody and broken... you shake your head and focus again.

'I'd grab my partner and run. Whatever it takes to save them. They would do the same for me.'

You look up. There's a few papers at the front desk already. You walk up and lay your own on top, glancing at Miss Braun as you do. She doesn't react to your proximity at all. Guess she was serious about staying professional.

You head back to your spot. You can see Asuka and Shinobu are done, the latter reading again. Blue-Hair looks like his head is about to explode with the effort he is exerting. The brown-haired bombshell, Miss Lange, is staring at you... no, just in your general direction, with that weird smile she always seems to have. Kia seems to be nearly done. You sit down, and Shinobu quickly looks over at you. "Well done!" She whispers, behind her book. You admit, you do feel a bit proud of yourself, seeing how much faster you got through it.

Shortly after, everyone has finished, and Miss Lange speaks again. "Okay, students! You have the day to yourselves again. Results will be posted in the hall outside the classroom in two hours!"

You start to stand up...

"Toooooonyyyyyyy! How do you think you did?" A tanned rocket slams into your side, nearly knocking you over.

"Uh, probably all right? It wasn't as hard as I thought, but there was a lot I didn't know."

"Well, looks like your studying paid off! So, where are you off to next?"

Shinobu was heading towards you, but she slows down. Right, you agreed to train with her.

>"I have a date with Shinobu. Gotta get to work building my harem, right?"
>"Training with Shinobu. She didn't exactly have fun her first time being wielded."
>"Training with Shinobu. Want to come along?"
>"What are we, married? Why are you so interested?"
>Leave out that you're going with Shinobu. "Training, why?"

"Training with Shinobu." You turn to the shy girl and wave her over. She timidly resumes walking towards you. "Hey, you mind if Kia comes along to watch? I know you didn't exactly have fun the first time you were wielded..." You glance up as you see Steven walking out of the classroom. Good, he's out of earshot. "Maybe she can help me figure out what we did right yesterday?"

Shinobu thinks for a second, then nods. "Okay... Want to come along, Kia?"

"Of COURSE I do! Hey, maybe he can handle two ladies at once?" Kia elbows you. "Mister Studly here was probably already thinking the same thing, eh?"

You clear your throat. "We should get going, then. I don't want to miss lunch."

Kia and Shinobu take the lead, whispering to each other the whole way to the training rooms. If you didn't know for a fact they had met two days ago, you'd think they were lifelong friends. Kia seems to be adept at worming her way into people's hearts. Maybe that's why you Resonated so easily?

The training room you sign into is very plain. Grey walls, a slightly padded tan floor, and a partition that has several training dummies of varying make and size behind it. You do note a red button on the wall for emergencies, in case you overdo things and need help.

You stand next to Shinobu, and Kia sits cross-legged on the floor. She's super excited to watch, but you can tell that Shinobu is feeling... awkward. You decide to say something.

"Hey, don't stress about this too much, okay? There's no pressure. Just us friends here."

Shinobu nods at you, and transforms.

You decide to play this safe. Shinobu transforms into that silvery kite shield, and you lock your arm in the back. You slowly, carefully, extend your wavelength into her, and can feel her there, though not nearly as strongly as Kia yesterday.

"Hello? Can you hear me?" You think towards her. You can feel where her soul is, but... not much else about it, yet.

"Yeah, this... it's better than last time. Doesn't hurt, but the connection could be better."

You take a ready stance with Shinobu. You swing her a few times, imagining catching an enemy in the side of the head with her edge, then throw your shoulder into a shield charge. Not bad.

"Um... Tony? You... Why are you holding back?"

"Well... after yesterday, I didn't want you to have another bad experience..."

"Tony!" You blink. She's never this assertive. "I... I can handle it! I want to do this right!"

You can feel her determination through your wavelength.

You sigh and brace yourself. "All right, here goes."

You put the full force of your soul into Shinobu. You hear her gasp a little. "You okay in there?"

"Y-yeah, just a little uncomfortable. I'll get used to it."

God damnit, you know that she isn't making an innuendo here, but Kia has already poisoned your mind.

"Tony?"

"Yeah, sorry. Just making sure I have this." You notice that Kia has set up a couple human-sized dummies. She pats one on the head. "Kick his ass, Tony!"

You dash forward, ducking low, and then springing upwards into an uppercut with Shinobu's edge. The dummy rocks back, and you drop into a leg sweep to put it on its back.

"It doesn't hurt any more, Tony. This is much better than yesterday... thank you." You can feel her smile again. You think you can also feel the shape of her soul, just a little. It seems to be... squishy? No, it just shifts around you when you probe at it.

"What are you doing? That tickles!" Shinobu tries not to giggle.

"Sorry! I was just trying to feel you! I mean not you, your soul!" You stammer a little.

You feel Shinobu freeze up. The connection breaks, and she transforms back... right on top of you.

You realize what's happening as soon as the connection breaks. You catch Shinobu in your arms, bridal-style, as she finishes shifting back into a human.

Suddenly, your vision goes dark. Some sort of cloth lands on your face...

You hear Kia's voice. "Well, Tony, aren't YOU a fast mover?"

You realize that the soft form in your arms seems to be... without clothing.

Wordlessly, you set Shinobu's shaking form down, drop her training clothes onto her without turning your head down, and walk behind the partition with the other dummies.

You hear Kia yell to you "I'm impressed! You didn't look at her at all! Though you're missing ouuuuut!~"

Nope. Not taking the bait.

Kia's head pokes around the corner after another minute. "She's decent, Casanova. Come on back."

You peer around the corner, just in case the island girl is pulling something, but Shinobu is dressed and sitting. Her face is still extremely red.

You should probably say something.

You sit down next to the blushing girl. She doesn't move. "You okay, Shinobu? I didn't see anything if that's what you're worried about..."

She looks over at you.

"No... that's..." She takes a deep breath. "I don't... uh..." She looks up at Kia.

Kia sits down on her other side. "Shinobu here went to an all-girls academy. Her parents never let her near any boys, so this whole touchy-feely Soul thing... I guess it takes getting used to."

"Oh... So it was just nerves?" You sigh in relief. You thought you had hurt the poor girl.

"I... I want to try again." She looks at you. "I'm so sorry! I messed up and that could have gotten you killed in a real fight! Let me try again!"

Kia looks thoughtful... "Or we could have a three-way."

Uh, what?

The tanned girl smiles mischeviously. "Spear and shield? Sounds like a good combination. What do you say?"
