Wednesday 6th September (Day 149)

It’s not a very long trip from the schoolship to Ibaraki airport and from there it’s a short hop to Haneda where you’ll be catching a flight to LA. Getting into the airport goes fine, your bags taken, and your athlete visa accepted. That brings no small amount of amusement to Max, though you suppose since you are doing a sport, you are technically an athlete.

With that sorted, you head into the duty-free. Max and Leo immediately split from the group, no doubt to spend some of their hard-earned Henschel cash.

“Not going to join them?” You ask Ruby and Axel as you watch the other two shoot off.

“Gotta save something for America, right?” Ruby answers for the two of them. “Stuff will probably be cheaper stateside, plus there’ll be more to choose from.”

“Fair enough,” you nod at the explanation. “Shall the rest of us get lunch?”

“Lunch sounds like a good idea,” Yuzu chips in. Axel nods his agreement and Ruby makes a sound of agreement.

“Looks like it's unanimous then,” you declare before the four of you head off to find somewhere to eat. After a hearty meal, for which Max and Leo eventually join you after their shopping spree, you make your way towards the gate. Boarding is uneventful, though you have to give up the window seat to Yuzu and Ruby quickly grabs the other one your crew is assigned leaving you in a middle seat. Thankfully though you’re next to Axel who’s a far more agreeable seat neighbour than Max or Leo.

The flight is long. It’s made slightly better by messing about with Yuzu next to you, though out of respect for Axel next to you, you don’t go too far. After landing, you face the first major hurdle of your journey. TSA.

“So yer German?” The TSA officer asks you, looking at your passport.

“I am,” you confirm.

“And why ‘re you here?” He asks, eyeing you suspiciously, “coming from Japan and all that?”

“My school is in Japan,” you reply, headache beginning to form, “We’re here for the Unlimited Class Tankery match.”

“We?” He asks.

“My crew and my girlfriend,” you say gesturing to the rest of your crew who are already past border control.

“The Jap?” He asks, making your eye twitch. “She’s way out of your league pal.”

“I know,” you reply, “are we done here?”

“You know we beat Germany during the war! You’re not a Nazi are you?”

>”No, I am not a Nazi,”

You sigh as you say it.

“Hmm,” the border guard eyes you suspiciously as you say it.

“Who won the war?” He asks.

“America!” You snap back. That seems to be satisfactory to him.

“Enjoy your stay!” He smiles as he stamps your passport. You take it off him and stomp past towards where Yuzu and your crew are waiting.

“Rough time with border control?” Yuzu asks sympathetically as you approach.

“That’s an understatement,” you grumble getting a laugh from her. Thankfully, the rest of your escape from LAX goes better with the six of you being able to grab your bags and head towards the exit unmolested.

“Fritz, two o’clock,” Ruby says quietly. Your eyes snap up and you see a woman holding a sign with “Werewolf Team” written on it.

“Yuzu, did you arrange a chauffeur for us?” You ask quietly, she shakes her head.

“The plan was to get a taxi from the airport, you think the Prez would splash out on a chauffeur?”

“No,” you sigh. “She wouldn’t.”

“Ave seen enough movies to see where this es goin’” Max grumbles. “Hundred bucks says it’s a feckin trap.”

“What, here in America?” Leo snorts. “I know we made an enemy of that Tsuji fellow but he’s just a mid-level bureaucrat who’s on his way out.”

“And what do you think?” You ask Yuzu, your fellow conspiracy theorist.

“Well, he was top of the Sensha-Do Federation so not mid-level but having any influence in America? It’s possible I suppose.”

“Axel?” You ask your loader’s opinion. He just shrugs and cracks his knuckles, just in case.

>”Let’s go poke our nose in a little,” don’t take Max’s bet but go talk to the woman

“Don’t agree to anything,” Ruby warns you somewhat redundantly. You nod your confirmation back and walk over to the woman.

“Commander Hermann?” She asks as you approach.

“That’s me,” you confirm. “Who are you?”

“I’m Tanya Calder, problem solver for Krupp International,” she answers as she hands you a business card. You take a second to read the card.

Tanya Calder
Problem Solver
Krupp International

“Mr. Krupp was pleased with Ooarai’s success but was slightly disappointed you didn’t inform him you were coming to America to fight in the Unlimited Class,” she continues.

“Are we able to talk to him?” You ask. She’s mostly assuaged your suspicion but talking to the man himself would help to squash them entirely.

“Here,” she hands you a new iPhone. “Call him yourself and ask, I’ll bring the car around.”

Before you can stop her, she marches off in the other direction. You unlock the phone and press the contact named ‘Mr. Krupp’, though not before cross-referencing it with the number you have listed for him. They match, so you dial it.

“Commander Hermann,” he answers as he picks up the phone. “Congratulations on winning the exhibition match.”

“Thanks, what’s the reception about?” You ask.

“Straight to business I see,” Krupp replies, a hint of amusement in his voice. “I can respect that. Remember that ball you went to for Henschel? I need you and your crew to do that again for a Senator that’s running the committee that’s ruling on whether I can expand into the USA. I’ll cover your entire trip if you can do that for me tomorrow evening.”

>Check that our schedule is open for tomorrow evening,

“Would you mind holding for a minute?” You ask.

“Don’t keep me waiting too long,” he replies. You quickly press the mute button then jog over to Yuzu.

“Who is it?” She asks.

“Krupp,” you answer. That leads to money changing hands, but you ignore it. “Are we free tomorrow evening?”

“We have to sort out your tank’s transfer to Nevada in the morning, but we’re free otherwise.” Yuzu answers.

“Perfect,” you unmute.

>if so: ”Can I bring a plus one this time?”

“Hermann, you can bring your entire damn school if it’ll get you there.” Krupp answers.

“Alright, we’ll do it then, but we don’t have any formal wear.”

“I’ll send a tailor to your hotel,” he assures you. “Just make sure you’re there.”

“We will be,” you promise.

“Good.” Krupp hangs up and as he does, Tanya brings a car around.

“What was that, Fritz?” Yuzu asks.

“Krupp’s covering our trip in exchange for us going to a formal event tomorrow,” you explain, getting a groan from Max and a sigh from Ruby. “That’s our ride, there.”

“The minivan?” Ruby asks.

“The minivan,” you confirm. The six of you heft your bags and head for the minivan. Tanya steps out helps the six of you put your bags in the back. With that done, you mount up and Tanya begins moving.

“Our hotel-“ Yuzu begins as she leans forward. Tanya cuts her off.

“Mr. Krupp has arranged one for you. I assure you it’s better than the one you booked.”

“Then we’ll face a-“

“Cancellation fee? Krupp International will cover it.” She pauses for a second before throwing something at you. “Here.”

You catch the small black object. “A business credit card?”

“Mr. Krupp is covering your trip,” she sighs. “Spend using that.”

“Sure,” you shrug. You hand the card to Yuzu who puts it in her purse.

A few minutes later, the car stops.

“Your stop,” Tanya grunts as she climbs out of the car to help with the bags. “You have my number, call me if you need anything.”

“Holy shit,” Max mutters.

You spin round to see what he’s looking at. “What’s- oh.”

“Yeah, yeah, the Ritz, stop gawking, or the people here will eat you alive,” Tanya says as she climbs back into the car. “Just give your name at reception and they’ll sort you out.”

With that she leaves, leaving the six of you to checking in.

Thankfully, the reception staff are rather helpful and direct you towards the rooms booked for you and your crew. There are only five given Krupp only expected your crew and they’re not penthouse suites, but you don’t mind sharing with Yuzu and they’re a lot better than what Ooarai could’ve afforded.

(These two are similar enough that I can mix them)

You collapse on the bed and take a moment to relax. Yuzu takes the opportunity to lie next to you which you exploit to pull her into a hug.

“The Ritz huh?” She giggles into the hug. “I didn’t expect this.”

“I didn’t either,” you say into her hair. You just lay there for a minute, taking in the nice soft bed and the nice soft Yuzu next to you.

“We shouldn’t lay here too long,” Yuzu mumbles into your chest. “We’ll get the bed dirty.”

“We’ll be getting it dirty anyway soon,” you reply. You begin to make a move, but she gently bats away your hand.

“Work first, Commander, then play.” She chides you.

You sigh as she pulls away, but you don’t complain. Instead, you pull out the phone Tanya gave you and call the tailor. He picks up almost immediately.

“Mr. Hermann?” He asks as he picks up the phone. “I’ve been expecting your call.”

“Yes, that’s me,” you confirm. “Are you able to do the fittings today?”

“Usually not, but I’m being paid for a month’s worth of work for this, so I’ll be there shortly. Be ready for my arrival.”

“We will,” you answer.

Satisfied, he ends the call.

“A month’s worth, huh?” Yuzu asks. “Krupp must want this to go right.”

“Agreed,” you nod. “Let reception know while I round up the troops?”

“Sure,” she smiles at you. You leave the room to bang on your crews’ doors. Thankfully, none are asleep, though you interrupted Axel’s shower. It’s not long after that that Yuzu leans out your door.

“The tailor and his daughter are on the way up,” she says. “If you just relax in your room he should knock in a few minutes.”

“You’re not staying?” You ask.

“I’m heading to Ruby’s room,” she explains. She brushes past you in the hallway and slips into your gunner’s room.

A few minutes later, you hear a knock on your door. When you open it, it’s a small, hawkish man with a suit.

“Mr. Hermann, I assume?” He asks.

“That’s me,” you nod as you let him in.

“Good, now strip.”

It’s a little awkward but he works expertly, taking your measurements.

“It’s tough to make a suit in less than a day,” he murmurs as he holds out your arm to measure. “I’ll have to just alter one, though it’ll likely be better fitted than any other suit you own.”

“Fine by me,” you grunt. A few minutes later, he’s done and you’re allowed to clothe yourself as he heads to Axel’s room to measure him. About half an hour later, him and his daughter are done and take their leave, promising to have them delivered to your rooms tomorrow. With that done, it’s time for a meeting.

>It’s getting late, meet informally over dinner and figure out everything up to the match.

You don’t think you could handle a proper meeting right now and neither could anyone else for that matter. Dinner however sounds like a far more reasonable prospect. It takes some coaxing, but you’re able to get the entire crew down with the promise of free food.

Thankfully, the hotel restaurant is open and after ordering you’re finally able to talk shop.

“Alright so. How many days do we have until the match?” You ask.

“It’s just gone Thursday and the match is on Saturday,” Leo informs you from behind a mountain of food.

“So two days in LA?” Ruby chips in.

“More like one and a half,” Yuzu corrects, “We have to leave Friday afternoon to get to the field on time.”

“And in that day and a half, we have to get Werewolf shipped, pick up any upgrades and go to that event?” You confirm.

“Yep!” Yuzu nods.

“If we split up, we could get it all done tomorrow,” Max suggests. “Let me handle one, then we can have Friday to explore LA.”

“And what happened last time you were put in charge of anything, hmm?” Ruby counters.

“There may ‘ave been an ammunition fire, or two, but I can handle meself!” Max protests.

“There probably won’t be any chances for any ammunition fires,” Leo adds.

“It’s the principle of the matter!” Ruby snaps back before swinging round to Axel. “Back me up here!”

Axel nods, a ringing endorsement of Ruby’s point of view from him.

“See!” Ruby turns to you and suddenly the whole table is looking your way, waiting for a decision.

>”We’ll be doing everything together, so there’s no need to worry.”

You say, to reassure Ruby. “Axel will be in charge of sorting out transport, you and Leo can help him out.”

“So, I’ll be coming with you then Fritz?” Yuzu asks.

“Mhm,” you nod. “You’re the one with the club’s spending card.”

“Do we really ‘ave to use it though?” Max interjects. “Didn’t Krupp offer to cover the trip for us? Then put us up in the Ritz? What’ll a little spending on his card ta help ourselves out be?”

“We don’t want to abuse Mr. Krupp’s hospitality,” Yuzu says, frowning at your driver. “The Prez promised us 100 credits to spend so I don’t see why we need to spend anymore than we have to.”

“We are doing him a massive favour though,” Ruby argues. “If we’re able to help with his expansion into America then whatever we spend is pocket change.”

“He did owe us a couple things before we left though, right?” Leo asks. “So as long as it's worth about the same, there shouldn’t be any problems, right?”

Before the table can break down into any further argument you step in.

“It’s late,” you declare as you stand. “Let’s sleep on it then come back to this in the morning.”

There are no protests to that and the six of you leave the restaurant and head back up to the hotel rooms.

“It got a little tense down there,” Yuzu states as you walk into the room. You make to collapse onto the bed, but she stops you. “Shower first,” she insists.

>”Only if you join me.”

You fire back immediately. That seems to have caught her off guard as she immediately goes red. You grin and ignore the blush before continuing.

>”It didn’t seem that tense to me, just that everyone was tired.”

“I guess so,” she hums. “Momo-chan gets cranky when we have to travel too.”

“Exactly, nothing to it,” you smile. “By morning it’ll be forgotten.”

“Then let’s hurry up and get to morning,” Yuzu grins. She makes to dive for the bed but you intercept her mid-jump.

“Uh uh uh, shower first,” you say, imitating her with a grin. Yuzu sighs and shakes her head, but you don’t miss the small smile.

“I guess it can wait a little longer,” she allows. That’s all the invitation you need.

Thursday 7th September (Day 150)

The morning comes too quick and far more comfortably than normal. You’re content to spend a minute just enjoying how comfortable the bed is. It’s dampened slightly by the dead arm you earned by letting your girlfriend lay on it, but that’s negated by the memory of what happened last night. You reckon it’s a worthwhile trade.

Unfortunately, time waits for no man, so after five minutes enjoying the bed and another two enjoying Yuzu’s sloped armour, you clamber out of bed, shoot a message to your team to meet for breakfast, then stumble into the bathroom.

Twenty minutes later, you and Yuzu leave the room. Surprisingly, when you reach the restaurant downstairs, your entire crew is seated at a table. After ordering yourself a full English breakfast from the buffet offerings and grabbing a cup of coffee, you take a seat next to Axel.

“Awwight, Fwith?” Max asks through a mouth full of food.

“Just fine, Max,” you answer. You take a sip of your coffee and savour the taste for a minute before you get to business. “So, get Krupp to pay, yes or no?”

“Why not just ask that Tanya lady?” Leo offers. “She can tell us pretty quickly whether we can spend anything.”

“Just spend,” Max suggests. “They need us, and it’s better to ask forgiveness than permission”

“We have enough money, Fritz,” Yuzu frowns. “No need to impose on Mr. Krupp.”

“Nothing to say, Ruby?” You ask. She’s busy talking to Hana.

>Just don’t use Krupp’s money. You already have enough.

“We won’t use Krupp’s money,” you declare. “If this event thing goes well, he might let us cash in later but right now I see no reason to get him involved.”

“Someone doesn’t want to be kicked out of bed~” Max sings but you take it for the joke that it is, and chuck part of a hash brown at him.

After finishing off breakfast, you split into two groups to deal with the tasks. You, Yuzu, and Max first ask at reception who are thankfully able to point you towards the best Unlimited class equipment shop in California. Apparently, it’s pretty popular in America.

It’s a short taxi ride from your hotel but you soon find yourself in front of the California Tankery Corporation warehouse.

“It’s pretty big,” Yuzu whistles as the three of you approach.

“That’s what she said,” Max mumbles. You snicker at that, but Yuzu pointedly ignores Max and keeps walking. After taking a second to compose yourself, you follow her in.

The front of the warehouse seems to have been converted to a waiting area. There’s no one else around, so you just walk over to the counter.

“Hi!” The woman at the counter greets you. “Welcome to the California Tankery Co. warehouse.”

“Hello,” you reply, “I was wondering if it would be able to look into any upgrades you have in stock for the Unlimited Class.”

“That’s one of the most popular divisions we make gear for,” she nods. The woman ducks under the counter and presses a button. The counter next to her swings open and she opens a door behind her. “Do you have proof of being associated with a Tankery team?”

You pause as she says that, but thankfully Yuzu jumps to your rescue and produces some documents to show the woman. The woman waves you and Max in as she examines the paperwork Yuzu handed her.

I like your purchases, but we have 100 credits specifically set aside for this competition, and you only spent 43. We should use as much of our budget as possible to give us the biggest edge, so I'm going to add on to yours. However, I am going to replace the UTV with a UAV, as it seems much more useful for spotting.

It looks pretty good. Maybe we should get some Africa Corps uniforms from our personal budget for LARP reasons ( and one for Yuzu for personal LARP reasons.)
>>
>>4579168
I'd be down, I suppose having 2 barbed wire instead of 3 to fit in the uniforms isn't much of an impact, so long as others don't disapprove of it.
>>
>>4579166

I like this, but why the small UAV? It doesn’t last very long and has a pretty high down time.

I also don’t know how useful the mortar would be, especially since we already have smoke grenade launchers.
>>
>>4579172
The idea behind the UAV as opposed to the UTV is that it is airborne, and the UTV is not, which is huge. Realistically, we will only be using it when threatened or in combat, which I do not anticipate to be continual, and thus I don't anticipate to have constant uptime for the UAV, allowing us to recharge while we're not using it. And even if we do need to use the full recharge duration, like I said, I don't anticipate a highly active combat that requires constant uptime for the UAV, so I imagine it wouldn't harm us that bad, and we have lots of good awareness buffs anyways.

As for the mortar, I mainly wanted it for use as a form of accurate indirect fire, perhaps against an entrenched target or one in an urban environment that we have spotted with our UAV.

The smoke is useful because it would allow us to approach a target if we desired to without needing to expend our defensive smoke grenade launchers. It's also nice to have some redundancy just in case.

This, thanks for putting it together.

You and Max walk down the aisles, picking out things you think will be useful. It can’t be anything too hard to fit, you opted to bring Yuzu instead of one of the Automotive club girls. Luckily, there’s plenty of stuff to pick from that won’t take too long to fit.

“Fuel n tracks are a must,” Max drawls as the two of you heft several fuel canisters and a couple sets of spare tracks onto a pallet trolley.

“Agreed,” you nod. As you stand back up after loading the trolley something catches your eye. “Say Max, how hard do you think it’d be to fit mesh armour?”

“Not that hard,” he replies. That’s good enough for you, so the two of you haul enough to cover your entire hull and most of the turret onto the trolley. Next to the mesh are some ERA blocks, you’re not allowed to take them out with you but you make an order for enough to cover Werewolf’s rear which they promise to deliver to the field for the Unlimited Class.

As you’re walking around, you also end up acquiring some barbed wire, a snazzy pair of binoculars, which you can use in normal tankery too, a pair of night vision goggles, and a mortar. Max was slightly disappointed with that, preferring the Nebelwefer tubes but you don’t think that’d be practical.

As you’re heading towards the checkout, Max disappears.

“Fritz, check this!” He shouts. You home in on his voice and find him surrounded by oversized toys. “Look at these!” He pats a small tracked vehicle.

“We also have flying ones,” you turn around to the woman from reception who’s approaching alongside Yuzu. “They have a smaller battery life but can see a lot further.”

She hands you a brochure which contains a few. Eventually you settle on a small one that won’t exactly break the bank.

“What’s the return policy like?” You ask.

“Full if you don’t use it, half if you do and double if you win.”

“Double?” Yuzu asks.

“Double,” she confirms. “If you win with our stuff, we’ll take it off you to use in promotions.”

“Sounds good to me, how do we pay?” You ask as you put the brochure down. She smiles and gestures towards a till which you begin to head towards. As you do, a very familiar uniform catches your eye.

“Fritz, no.” Max says as soon as he notices but it’s too late. You turn to the lady.

“How much for six?”

“It’s one credit for five but I can ask my manager about throwing in the extra one free given how much you’re buying.” She smiles.

“I’m not wearing Afrika Korps gear, Fritz,” Max sniffs. It takes you a second. Max is Swiss-Irish, he doesn’t have the same affinity for the Afrika Korps you do.

>”Well I won’t force you but I’m buying it anyway.”

>”And wear what? Your gear designed for Europe? Or for Japan where it doesn’t reach half the temperature?”

You ask, eyebrow raised. That seems to catch him off guard.

“Oh, er, I hadn’t considered that,” he admits, scratching the back of his head. “But I can find something else, I’d just rather not wear that.”

“Why not,” you press, “you've been driving around in a German tank with no issues for how long now, and you're now having issues with the clothing?"

It’s not it being German that I have a problem with,” he replies, switching to German. “It’s that it’s Afrika Korps.

I’m not following here, Max,” you sigh. “Simplify it for me.”

The Afrika Korps uniform is Tan.” He explains. When you make a face, he elaborates. “Saori says I don’t look good in Tan.”

You’re an idiot, Max,” you reply earnestly. “I’m buying the damn uniforms.”

“What was the Issue?” Yuzu asks as you walk towards the counter.

“Saori thinks he doesn’t look in Tan, so he doesn’t want to wear the desert uniforms.”

“Hmm,” Yuzu looks over to Max then back to the uniforms. “I think she’s right.”

“You see, Fritz!” Max exclaims as you finish signing for the stuff and let Yuzu pay. “I told you!”

“I don’t think you’d look good in red, Fritz.” Yuzu chips in as she puts away the Tankery club card.

“But this isn’t red! This is a neutral colour! Tan!”

The debate rages as the three of you leave the warehouse. You’re unable to make any headway against the two of them arguing that it's possible for a colour not to go with a person. Eventually, you give up and turn your energies to more fruitful endeavours.

>Do some sightseeing in LA, if you skip lunch, you’ll be able to do more before the event this evening

“How about we go see some of LA?” You suggest. “We can get lunch as we walk so, we can spend more time looking around.”

“Sounds good to me,” Yuzu nods.

“Aye, I’d be down for a look around,” Max says.

“I’ll just text the others and ask them how it went.”

>Text crew asking how it went with them

You pull out your phone and text a message to Axel. He just replies with a thumbs up. You then text Ruby to get a little more detail. She confirms that they’ve seen to Werewolf, and have arranged transport to the field with a little help from Tanya.

You tell her that you’re going sightseeing and invite them along. She agrees and suggests a nearby park as a meeting point. That’s fine by you.

“Fritz, lunch.” Yuzu hands you a hot dog as she says that.

“Thank you,” you take a bite then kiss her, getting grease all over her cheek.

“Fritz!” She squawks as she backs off. She glares at you for a second then wipes it off with a tissue. You just wink back at her as Max laughs in the background.

About twenty minutes later, you make it to the park. You can see the other three members of your crew also having lunch on a bench.

“So, what’s the plan?” Ruby asks as you take a seat next to her.

“I heard the USS Iowa museum is open,” Leo offers.

“Venice beach is an option too,” Yuzu suggests. “We’d have to go back to the hotel to get swimsuits though.”

“Hollywood,” Max states. “It’s literally a five-minute walk from here.”

“I like the sound of the USS Iowa museum,” you state.

“Boys and their toys ey?” Yuzu jokes to Ruby. An interesting choice given she operates your tank’s main gun.

Once you’re all finished eating, you catch a cab to take you to the Iowa museum. It doesn’t take long, and soon you’re standing in front of the last battleship in the world.

It doesn’t take long to find a tour group and soon, the rather old looking man in charge of the group begins to move.

“Look at the size of those!” Ruby chirps excitedly as your group approaches the turret. “I wonder what one of those would do to a tank!”

“Probably turn it to fine powder, Miss,” the tour guide states, getting some chuckles from the rest of the group. “Her sixteen-inch guns fire shells that weigh as much as a light tank, and she has nine of them.”

“Are they still?” Ruby gets cut off by a shake of the head.

“’Fraid not, Miss. You know how it is with museum pieces. We are headed inside the turret though.” That seems to sate your gunner and your group heads for the turret.

The inside of the turret is massive. The gun breeches, which Axel takes interest in, are massive. The shells are also massive. With the powder bags beneath them, they’re almost as tall as you.

“W23,” Yuzu reads off a shell propped up against the wall.

“A nuclear shell,” the tour guide nods, causing Yuzu to step back. “It’s just a replica,” he laughs, “but if three thousand pounds of explosive force isn’t enough, this has twenty kilotons of it.”

The rest of the journey is equally entertaining. When you reach the missile racks you must remind your gunner that they’re not permitted in Tankery and they cost millions of dollars. Not exactly economical. You’re also able to see the FDR bedroom and the bridge.

“That was a blast!” Your gunner whoops as you leave the ship. Max and Leo laugh at her but don’t argue with her assertion. “The Iowa must be the greatest battleship of all time.”

>Say nothing, just nod and appreciate the awesomeness of the ship as a bald eagle flies overhead

You don’t respond to your gunner’s declaration. Instead, you stop and turn to face the old battleship. It may not be a German ship but god damn it’s pretty. You watch for a moment as a bald eagle swoops in and lands on the highest mast.

“Come on, Fritz,” Yuzu hooks an arm around yours and begins to tug you away from the ship. She’s not strong enough to do it, but you let yourself be pulled along anyway. “And here I thought you were a tank guy.”

“I am,” you frown, “it’s just the sheer awesomeness of the Iowa overwhelmed me for a second.”

“Well, we have an event to go to, so you’ll have to do it afterward.” She says it sympathetically but there’s a small lilt to her voice as she says it.

“Are you teasing me?” You accuse her as you head towards the cab.

“Nooo,” she denies weakly. “I just think it’s cute is all.”

“Mhm,” you grunt and file that away for later.

You reach the hotel and when you arrive in your hotel room there’s a suit laying on the bed. There’s also a dress for Yuzu which you pass to her when she enters. It takes a few minutes, made longer by your need to interrupt Yuzu while she’s changing, but you’re soon done. It’s not a moment too soon as the phone given to you by Tanya starts to ring.

“Hello?” You answer.

“Hermann? It’s Calder. I’m outside whenever you and your crew are ready to head to Mr. Krupp’s event.” The sourly Problem Solver grunts.

“Right, we’ll be down shortly.” You hang up and get to rounding up your crew. It takes a few minutes but soon the six of you are in the car and heading out.

“The Beverly Hilton, huh?” Max observes as Tanya pulls up in front of the hotel. “Guess we’re moving up in the world.”

“It’s not nearly as glamourous as you think it is,” Tanya grunts. “Where there’s money there are snakes.”

“We’ll keep that in mind,” you promise as the six of you exit the car. Tanya snorts but nods all the same.

You give your names to a nearby security guard who checks you off and directs you towards the events hall.

>See if there’s anyone you know around.

You enter the main hall and spend a second gawking. The hall is rather large, and it got a lot of people you don’t recognise in it. Leo seems to though.

“Senators,” he explains for your and the rest of the crew’s benefit. “Lots of them, probably to with that expansion into America Krupp’s looking for.”

“And so, Krupp is aiming to woo them?” Max asks.

“More or less,” Leo nods. “Don’t know why he needs us here though.”

“Well, Mr. Krupp is covering most of the expenses of our trip so it’s the least we could do,” Yuzu says.

“So be on your best behaviour everyone,” you order. “Axel?”

Your loader nods, confirming he’ll keep an eye on Max and Leo. The two immediately start protesting their innocence but you ignore it with practiced ease. You scan the crowd and spot a familiar face.

“Hey look, it’s Mr. Nishizumi,” you say pointing him out. You turn and see you’re only telling Yuzu given the rest of your team has disappeared in the direction of the buffet.

“Shall we go say hello then?” Yuzu offers. With nothing better to do, the two of you make your way towards him.

“Mr. Nishizumi?” You ask as you approach. He perks up when he hears you and spins round to face you.

“Please Fritz, it’s just Tsuneo, take a seat, who’s this?” Tsuneo asks as he pushes a couple of chairs out for you.

“This is Yuzu, my girlfriend,” you say, introducing her to Tsuneo.

“Oh, Yuzu! Maho told me about you!” The man cheers as he shakes her hand.

“She did?” Yuzu asks, confused. “I didn’t think we were that close.”

“She’s mentioned you thrice since she came back from Germany,” he says. “That’s second only to her sister at eighteen.”

“I see,” Yuzu mutters. While she’s processing that, you take the opportunity to ask a question.

“So, Tsuneo, why are you here?”

“Why am I here?” He snorts. “Because my wife is a sadis- lovely woman, who needs someone to keep her company to these boring events!” He finishes in a very panicky voice. You look around to see what caused it and sure enough behind you is Instructor Nishizumi glaring at Tsuneo.

You pick what you think is the smartest move in that scenario and move out of the direct path from where Instructor Nishizumi is to her husband.

“My lovely wife! Who I love more than life itself! And who I don’t mind keeping company at all!” Tsuneo says frantically, trying to calm Shiho down. It isn’t working given she continues to march towards him.

“It’s a good thing you love me more than life itself,” She glowers at him as she advances.

“Come on, you don’t want to make a scene, do you?” he blubbers again. That slows her advance for a moment, but she continues. Then, Tsuneo has a lightbulb moment. “I won’t do that thing anymore!”

That manages to stop her. “What thing?” She asks.

“You know, the one with my tounge.” He whispers it but given how close you are you can still hear it. So did Yuzu if her giggling is any indication.

“I will deal with you later,” Shiho declares before turning to you. “Commander Hermann, I did not expect to see you in America, let alone during term time or at a lobbying effort.”

“We’re here for the unlimited class,” you explain getting a nod of understanding. “As for why we’re here, Mr. Krupp wants us here and offered to pay for our trip if we did so…”

“I would’ve done the same,” She nods as she sits down. “It’s likely because Senator Ellington is a fan of youth Sensha-Do.”

“Who’s that?” You ask.

“He’s in charge of the senate committee deciding whether Krupp can expand here,” Shiho says. “A smarter person than I might be able to put those two facts together, but I have to turn off my brain to survive these dreadful events.”

“You’re the smartest person I know,” Tsuneo chips in.

“Mmm, keep talking to me like that and I might have to forgive you,” Shiho purrs, purrs at him. You’re not sure what to make of that.

> Try to find Krupp, find out why he wanted you here

You look at Yuzu and it seems she’s just as tired of playing the third wheel to whatever the hell Instructor Nishizumi and Tsuneo are doing as you are. You jerk your head in another direction and she frantically nods her agreement. You don’t bother excusing yourself. Instead, the two of you quietly get up and away from the two elder Nishizumis.

“You’d think two adults would have more decency than that,” Yuzu mumbles as you open the distance.

“To anyone just looking it probably seems like they’re just talking,” you state as you observe the two of them. “It’s just that we were unfortunate enough to be close to them.”

“How about we go see what Mr. Krupp wanted?” Yuzu suggests, trying to distract herself.

“Excellent idea,” you nod. “Anything as long as it’s not listening to them.”

It takes a minute, but you soon see the man talking with a few of the people Leo pointed out as senators earlier. When he sees you hovering around he excuses himself and walks over to you.

“Commander Hermann,” he greets you.

“Mr. Krupp,” you nod. “Awful nice party you’ve thrown, looks very… expensive.”

“The cost of this will be loose change compared to the potential rewards of being allowed to expand into America.” He says, waving away your point.

“It’s great Mr. Krupp, but we were wondering why exactly you invited us?” Yuzu asks. Krupp just nods. He takes a second to down a very strong looking drink taken from a passing server and thinks on it for a second.

“Senator Ellington is a very important, and very nosey man,” he starts. “When he sees children at a lobbying event, I have no doubt that he’ll poke his nose in. When he does, I want you to tell him the truth.”

“The truth?” You ask.

“The truth,” Krupp confirms. “Odds are he’ll try probing you about my company and given his affinity for Tankery he’s likely to take your word for it.”

>”Do you mean the truth or the ‘truth’”?

>”Do you mean the truth or the ‘truth’”?

You ask cautiously. Krupp looks confused for a second, but his eyes widen a fraction in realisation.

“No, no, no.” He shakes his head. “I appreciate the offer, Hermann but politicians are professional liars. They can spot them like a vulture can rotten meat. Besides, it would be… unprofessional of me to ask some of my best revenue generators to lie for me.”

“Alright, if you say so,” you shrug.

“Good man,” Krupp nods. “I shall remember this. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I must schmooze.”

He says it as if it’s a dirty word, then walks away.

“A very blunt man,” Yuzu observes.

“I like that about him,” you reply. “Shall we find the others then? If this Senator Ellington is as nosey as Krupp says I don’t want him to find the others first.”

“That’s a very good idea,” Yuzu nods. You take a look around the massive hall and consider where your crew is likely to be. Your eyes settle on a corner that’s also close to the buffet.

Sure enough, you see a very distinctive mop of red hair. You and Yuzu begin making your way over but your relief at finding them slowly turns to horror.

“Fritz, is that?”

“Axel arm-wrestling someone who looks very important?” You finish for her. “I think it is.”

“We should probably do some damage control.”

“Agreed,” you nod.

The two of you move as fast as you can while not outright running. You watch the arm-wrestle as it happens and you're surprised to see the man you assume is Senator Ellington holding his own against Axel who you know from experience is strong.

You arrive just in time to see Axel win, managing to get Ellington’s hand to the table.

No need to overreact here, do you really think the senator entered the arm wrestle against his will? He's already been described as someone who likes youth tankery, he is just in all likelihood a guy who loves the youngsters. The friendly option would be our best bet at making a good impression imo.

Not overreacting. Our crew are fucking children who need supervision.

If you can’t see why leaving them unattended is a bad thing after so many threads, there’s no hope for you.

And now we have to deal with any fallout from having them come into contact with the senator first.

Point is...WHEN THE QM GIVES US THE OPTION TO CHECK ON OUR CREW, WE FUCKING TAKE IT.

Take a chill pill, even if this guy isn't totally into having fun with our crew, and was somehow ""coerced"" into an arm wrestling match, how bad could this hypothetically end for us? The only requirement Krupp gave for us to pay for our trip was for us to simply attend the party, and when we got here he said to "tell the truth". Having fun with a senator at the party does not seem to violate this.

>”Axel’s our loader, so he’s pretty strong.”

You say as you approach. Internally you’re panicking slightly, but you try to maintain a cool face.

“Dang, he sure is,” Senator Ellington remarks as he withdraws his arm and gives it a shake. “I was a loader in Vietnam, ya’ know? Wanted to see if I still had it.” He laughs and shakes his head. “It seems in my old age, I’ve lost it.”

“You don’t look that old, sir.” Yuzu chips in.

“Hah! That’s sweet of you to say darling, but the man in the mirror reminds me every morning.” He remarks. He then gestures to the rest of your crew. “These fine folks have been keeping me company, a breath of fresh air compared to the Capitol building, I tell you.”

“Good to hear they’ve been behaving themselves,” you say, eyeing Max and Leo. They give you a smug look, but you ignore it and take a seat at the table your team has commandeered.

“So, tell me, Commander…”

“Hermann,” you finish, “Fritz Hermann.”

“Right, Commander Hermann. You don’t mind if I call you Fritz, do you?” He asks. You shake your head, so he smiles and continues. “So, Fritz. What brings you guys to a lobbying effort?”

“Well, we’re in America to compete in the Unlimited Class,” you begin. “As for being here, Krupp Tankery is a sponsor of ours and he asked us to attend.”

“I see,” Ellington says, stroking his chin. “I don’t know if you know this, but Krupp’s currently lobbying the government to be allowed to expand into America.”

“We do,” you nod.

“See, it’s my job to determine whether it’ll be good for Tankery, his expansion that is.” He explains. “Talk to me, Tanker to Tanker. What do you think of his kit? Has he tried to exploit you at all? We had to shut down a division of Ford for almost working a school team to death.”

You’re about to give an answer but he interrupts you.

You take a second to think about the questions and organise your reply.

“Well, his stuff’s probably the best we have access to, and it hasn’t failed us,” you begin. “I can’t speak for other teams but to us, he’s been pretty fair. No overtly aggressive terms just slap his badge on our tanks and take a pick of his stuff. It could be a little expensive for smaller teams if you had to buy them properly though.”

“Expense ain’t really a problem,” Ellington says as he listens to you. “What a team can or can’t buy is on them, but would you say the stuff is worth it?”

“Without a doubt,” Yuzu answers for you. “I mostly handle logistics for the club and Krupp’s equipment makes it easier.”

“More than just a pretty face then ey?” He quips. “Alright, thanks for the low down Fritz. What about those new tanks?”

“Well, my crew and I helped work on some based off of our tank and normal Panthers,” you explain. “They have issues, and I wouldn’t trade my tank for one but I can see the potential.”

“You think they could help make Tankery more popular?” He asks.

“Without a doubt,” you nod. “They might not be as good, but they’re cheaper which matters for getting into Tankery.”

“I see,” Ellington nods slowly. His phone audibly buzzes, and you can see his face drop as it does. “Thanks for your opinion, young man. You might have helped influence the next sixty years of Tankery.” He stands and straightens his suit. “Your crew is a lovely bunch too, look after them.”

“That’s my job,” you reply. “As well as straightening them out.”

“Mother hen huh?” He laughs. “Just like my TC, see you later guys.”

Your crew wave and say goodbye to him far more enthusiastically than you expected. Once he’s left, you turn back to them.

>”You’re lucky he’s one of us.”

You sigh as you rub the bridge of your nose.

“I prefer considering it a calculated risk,” Max quips. That gets a snort from Ruby and a small giggle from Yuzu.

“You as well?” You ask Yuzu accusingly.

“Well, if it’s stupid and it works, is it really stupid?” She asks.

“Yes,” you reply. “It just means you got lucky.”

“You’re going around in circles, Fritz,” Ruby chips in from the back of the table.

>Finally get around to hitting the buffet

“I hate you all,” you state as you stand getting a laugh from everyone present. You look to Yuzu. “Come on you traitor, let’s go to the buffet.”

She holds her hand out and you take it, easily pulling her up.

Unfortunately, by the time the two of you reach the buffet, it’s mostly empty. Fortunately, given the size of it, there’s enough for you to fill a plate. Even better there’s a fruit platter so you’re able to grab some pineapple. By the time you’re done, you and Yuzu have three plates between the two of you. You get some weird looks but no one important seems to care so you ignore them.

“This is some good food,” you mumble between bites of a sandwich.

“Don’t talk while you’re eating,” Yuzu berates you.

“Are you my girlfriend or my mother?” You ask.

“I have your mother’s number,” she shoots back. You wisely decide not to push it. Another one for the book of grudges.

The rest of the event is uneventful. You spend it in the corner, relaxing and shooting the breeze with Yuzu and your crew. Eventually, after a long day, you make it back to the hotel and split into your rooms for the night.

You collapse into a chair and Yuzu makes for the bed, but you fling an arm out and pull her into your lap.

“Shower first,” you snark.

“Fritz~” she whines but you stay strong and keep her pinned. She quickly gives up, instead settling onto your lap. “Tomorrow we have to leave for the field.” She states.

“I know,” you reply.

“So what’s our plan for the morning?”

>”We’ll leave early so we can have Werewolf fitted soon.”

“If he’s ready early then we can rest just before the match and be fresh for it.”

“Sounds like a plan,” Yuzu nods. “I’ll make sure to talk to Tanya about getting a lift.”

“Speaking of,” you say as you pull out the phone Tanya gave you. “What do you think I should do with this?”

“Well, it costs less than what we’ve already spent on Krupp’s card,” Yuzu shrugs. “If it’s really bothering you then just ask her tomorrow.”

“Sure, that sounds good,” you say. “Now, about that shower.”

She wraps her arms around your neck and smiles innocently at you. “What about it?”

Friday 8th September (Day 151)

You wake up about the normal time that morning, and like yesterday spend a minute enjoying the bed.

Eventually, you roll to the bedside table and send a text to the rest of your crew to be ready to go soon. You get some complaining, but everyone agrees to meet for breakfast then head out.

After getting ready, you and Yuzu head down to the hotel restaurant. You see your crew on the same table as last time, so like last time you grab some breakfast and a coffee and head for the table.

“Roadtrip… wooo,” comes Leo’s very enthusiastic response to your arrival.

“You don’t like them?” Yuzu asks as she takes a seat.

“He gets car sick,” Max snickers as he pats Leo’s back.

“All of our roadtrips have complications too,” Ruby nods wisely. “We’ve never once completed one without an incident.”

“Like the time we got into a fistfight in France,” Max says.

“Or when we accidentally made our Italian teammates switch sides,” Ruby chips in.

“Or when we got stuck in Albania,” Leo grumbles. They all shudder at that one.

“Fritz?” Yuzu asks, slightly worried.

>”Or the time we had a puncture in the middle of a Barvarian forest.” Play along.

You nod sadly as you say it and your crew follows suit.

“Oh. Oh dear,” Yuzu mumbles. “Should I prepare for something disastrous to happen?”

“Yes.”
“Definitely.”
“Mhm.”

The rest of your crew answers.

>Wink at Yuzu to let her know we're just messing with her.

It takes Yuzu a second to put two and together.

“You guys…” she whines. Your crew bursts out laughing at that and you can’t help but join them. Yuzu eventually joins in as well when she sees the funny side.

You leave the hotel with the bare minimum. You’ll still be in America for a few days after the league and you’re not paying either so it costs nothing to keep the rooms. When you exit the hotel, Tanya is waiting in a minivan.

“Hi Tanya,” you say as you climb into the front.

“Yo,” she grunts back as your crew climb in. “This’ll take a couple of hours but we’ll be there in the afternoon.”

“Sounds good to me,” you nod. Your crew and Yuzu make themselves comfortable in the rows behind you. Max, Axel and Leo are directly behind you and Ruby has requisitioned the last row for herself and Yuzu.

“So, I’ve never been one for Tankery,” Tanya begins as you set off.

“Don’t you work for a Tankery company?” You ask.

“It pays the bills,” she shrugs. “So, what’s this one all about then?”

“The unlimited class?” You ask.

“Yeah, that one.”

>”Probably twenty-three hours of boredom and one of absolute terror.”

“That sounds dumb,” she states. You can’t help but laugh at the frankness.

“Maybe, I suppose it’s an acquired taste,” you reply. “It doesn’t hurt that the money’s good for professionals.”

“So like soccer?”

“Or any other sport,” you nod. “Though with more heavy metal and less diving.”

“Hard to take a dive behind an inch of metal,” She observes.

“Usually more than an inch,” you correct. Tanya doesn’t seem to care.

It takes about four hours, but you soon make it to the initial rally point for the league. It’s here that amenities have been set up for the tanks, tankers, and support crew as well as all the stuff needed to run the entire event.

“This is as far as I go,” Tanya declares after pulling up outside the main administrative building. “Good luck.”

You wave goodbye as she turns around and leaves.

Calling it a building was perhaps an overstatement. On second glance, it seems more a large prefab. The six of you head in, check in with the receptionist and he gives you the location of your garage as well as letting you know Werewolf is already there.

“So, what now?” Yuzu asks as you exit the admin building.

“I suppose we get started on Werewolf,” you suggest. “We need to get that equipment fitted.”

“Why not check out the competition?” Ruby suggests. “We’re right next to them, we can do a quick walkaround.”

“I say we look at the field,” Max grunts. “I’d like to know what I’m driving on.”

>Survey the field while everyone else gets Werewolf fitted.

“Well, checking the field only needs one of us, so how about I go do that while you guys get started on Werewolf?” You suggest.

That gets some grumbles, but the four of them begin to make their way towards the garage you were told Werewolf is parked.

“They don’t look very happy about that,” Yuzu states as she observes your crew.

“It’s more complaining for the sake of complaining,” you explain. “You’ve never done that?”

“Nope,” she answers.

“Not once?” You press.

“Nuh-uh,” she shakes her head. “Momo-chan does though.”

“Well, there you have it then,” you declare. “Are you coming with me or going with them?”

“A trek into the desert? In the middle of the afternoon?” She asks.

“Yes,” you reply. She takes a second to about it.

“Sure, sounds like fun.” She declares. You blink, not having expected that response but you shrug, smile, and take her hand.

It turns out you don’t have to trek that far at all. The rally point was built above the field so after a brief hike up a cliff, the two of you can see the whole thing.

“Field is an understatement,” Yuzu mumbles as she sees it.

“You can say that again,” you remark as you observe it. “That town looks big, it’ll probably be pretty important come the match.”

“That area has a lot of rocks,” Yuzu states. You swivel to the area she pointed out to the south and look.

“Sure does,” you nod. “I’ll have to talk to Max about them.”

You spend a little longer observing the map. In particular, you note down the mountain range running down the middle and the hill in the south-west with a cathedral on top. Odd for the Nevada desert but you note it anyway.

>Head to the competitor’s area to scope out the competition

As the two of you head back, you start passing other teams. You observe them closely, watching the various groups roll as they work through the early evening on preparing their tanks.

“A lot of the tanks are weaker than yours,” Yuzu says.

“On paper,” you allow. “But they all had to qualify somehow; I’d bet on them packing upgrades under the hood that’ll help even the odds a little bit.”

As you say that, you pass a Super Sherman bristling with electronic equipment.

“Like that tank,” you say as you point to it. “It looks like it won’t be a threat but I don’t want to find out what it could do with that equipment.”

“Point taken."

The two of you continue your tour of the competitors. Most of the garages are shut, but occasionally you get a glimpse of a particularly fast looking light tank or a heavily armoured Soviet medium tank.

Clang, clang, clang

“Can you hear that, Fritz?” Yuzu asks.

“I can hear singing too,” you mutter. By unspoken agreement, the two of you decide to investigate.

As you get closer, you’re slowly able to hear the singing better.

“It’s Japanese,” you and Yuzu say at the same time. You look to each other, laugh, then continue towards the singing.

You round a corner and finally see them. Three girls dressed in Black Forest uniform banging away and having what looks like a blast. You’re so focused on them you don’t see Erika pulling up on them.

You’re slightly too far to make out the words but you can tell they’re not happy ones. To their credit, the Black Forest girls seem to be unbowed in the face of an angry Erika.

>Walk in and politely make yourself known

“Let’s go make ourselves known then,” you say to Yuzu. The two of you begin walking over and you arrive just as Erika finishes being berating her crew. For someone so quick to anger, she also seems to be very quick to forgive – quickly cooling down after having a go at her crew.

“You know Erika, shouting at them is bad for morale.” Erika spins round as you say that, ready to have a go at you but pauses when she sees it’s you.

“Fritz?” She asks, slightly confused. “What are you doing here?”

“Same as you I suppose. We’re here to compete in the Unlimited class.”

“No, no I get that,” Erika replies. “But you didn’t attend the qualifiers.”

“He didn’t win them either,” one of Erika’s crew adds.

“Yeah, we did,” Erika says. “So how are you here?”

“We were invited after winning the tournament.” Erika’s eye twitches when you say it, but she takes it with a surprising amount of grace.

“I See,” she grumbles. She says nothing for a minute. The silence starts to get awkward but then she speaks again.

“Koume’s here too,” she says. “Helping with the logistical side, you know servicing the tank and stuff.”

“Really? I should say hello.” You point to Yuzu. “This is our logistical side.”

“Yeah, Koyama. We’ve met.” Erika gives Yuzu a nod which she returns with a smile. Erika turns to one of her crew. “Go grab Akaboshi.”

Koume appears a minute later.

“Fritz!” She cries as she slams into you. “I didn’t expect to see you here.”

“The feeling is mutual,” you reply as you return the hug. You hold it for a minute before letting her go. “You not competing?”

“We won one spot, so the crew that won it is taking it,” she says gesturing to Erika. “I’m along for a little chance to see America.”

“That’s fair,” you nod. You spend a little longer just chatting with Koume and the Black Forest girls before you make to leave. As you do, Koume grabs your hand.

“Wait, Fritz!” She says. You stop and turn back to her.

“You and Erika should work together. It’s not against the rules.”

“I thought you’d say something like that,” Koume replies.

“Maybe I’m getting too predictable then,” you muse. That gets a laugh from Koume but you continue. “As long as Erika agrees.”

“A moment,” Koume spins around and marches into garage. It takes a minute but she emerges Erika in tow.

“Alright, Akaboshi. What’s this about?” Erika complains as she’s dragged out.

“You and Fritz are going to work together till you’re the last ones standing,” she summarises. “Then you’re going to duel to see who wins.”

Erika blinks then looks to you. “You’re alright with this?”

“Sure am,” you nod. You can see the gears in her head turning and she slowly nods at you.

“Alright. You still have that high-power radio, right?” She asks.

“How do you know about that?” You ask.

“Good reconnaissance,” she replies. “Black Forest uses a frequency of one hundred megahertz. Dial that in and we should be able to talk as long as we’re not opposite sides of the mountain range.”

You hold out a hand to shake on it. Erika doesn’t hesitate to shake it.

After that surprise encounter, you and Yuzu begin heading towards the garage that should contain Werewolf. Sure enough, as you get closer you begin to hear some very familiar swearing.

When you reach the garage, the door is open. Werewolf’s rear is facing outwards and you can see the ERA blocks you bought fitted to him.

“Took ya long enough,” Max grunts when he sees you.

“Well, I surveyed the field and got us an ally,” you retort.

“Ally?”

“Erika Itsumi is here.”

“The stuck-up Black Forest girl?”

“One and the same,” you nod.

“Right, well I hope she can keep up with us,” he says. “Most of the stuff is fitted but we need to decide where to put the drone controls. I was thinking either up with you since you’d be the one making decisions or with Leo since he does jack-shit during matches.”

“I heard that!” Leo shouts from further in the garage

“Give them to Leo,” you say. Max nods and moves to do it, but you stop him. “Actually, let me do it. Take the others and relax before tomorrow.”

“Aye, that’s something I can get behind.” Max hands you the drone controls then heads out to round up the rest of your crew. You see the lot of them trailing out of the garage likely to find a shower or food.

“You alright, bud?” You ask as you approach. You feel Werewolf stir as you do. “Ready to kill some Americans?”

That gets his attention. As you climb in through Leo’s hatch at the front, you hear machinery moving as he attempts to start himself. Thankfully, it’s not possible for him to start up himself so your work is accompanied by the continued whining of the Turbine as it attempts to start up.

Eventually, he gives up and turns his attention back to you.

“Yes, we are in America,” you answer his question. “The match starts tomorrow.”

You continue in that fashion as you check the work your crew’s done. They’re not professionals but it’ll hold. The mortar’s been mounted atop Werewolf’s turret, but it’s positioned in a way that’ll stop you using the MG or the rangefinder at the same time. Acceptable given how cramped it’s getting atop the turret. You’re very happy to see Rabbit team’s flag affixed to the flagpole you bought behind you. Impractical? Maybe, but it looks good.

As you finish up your inspection of Werewolf, Yuzu reappears.

“You done?” She asks.

“Sure am,” you say as you climb down. It’s slightly more awkward than usual with the Mesh armour in the way but you manage. “You need something?”

“No, there’s a briefing tomorrow for all competitors before the match begins.” She says, reading off a clipboard. “It’s pretty early though, so the match can begin in the late morning.”

“Sure,” Yuzu smiles. “If we’re going for the briefing in the morning then we should probably head to bed.”

“Sounds good to me,” you nod. You turn and look back to Werewolf. “You hear that, Werewolf? Tomorrow morning, we fight.”

You’re not touching him, so you don’t know what he’s feeling but you have no doubt he’s raring to go.

Saturday 9th September (Day 152)

Your night at the base camp isn’t the Ritz, but its good enough. You and Yuzu rise slightly before the sun, grab breakfast and head out towards the briefing. It’s held in a big clearing in the middle of the camp. There are plenty of chairs, but you hold off before sitting down.

“Hmm?” Yuzu looks at you questioningly.

“I’m looking for Erika,” you explain. It takes a few minutes, but you spot her and make your way over.

“Afrika Korps?” She asks upon spotting you.

“It’s fitting,” you retort. She’s about to say something when a man walks to the front.

“Hello! Hi everyone!” He shouts, loud enough for you to hear him. “Hi! This is the preliminary briefing, just to go over a few things before the match. As you all know, this is a battle royale match comprised of a hundred tankers. The only rules are don’t shoot at exposed opponents, no guided munitions and armour must be RHA! Anything else, goes.”

He takes a breath before continuing.

“The battle will begin at noon and last till the elimination of the last tank or the end of tomorrow!”

“How will you determine the winner if there’s more than one person left!?” Someone shouts.

“Then it’ll be king of the hill to finish!” He says. “After the first twenty-four hours a contracting circle will be communicated by radio and delineated by plane and whoever holds the spot at the end of tomorrow will win! Now, any questions!?”

There are a few scattered questions thrown at the man and some are very amusing. In particular, you watch a French crew walk off in disgust after being informed there are no toilets on the field. French people…

Your phone rings. You check it and it’s a set of coordinates. Erika’s does too.

“Our starting positions,” Erika explains.

“How did they get my number?” You wonder aloud.

“Ahem,” Yuzu coughs into your hand. “Logistical support, remember?”

“Have I told you how great you are?”

“You could stand to say it more,” Yuzu preens.

“If you’re done?” Erika interrupts. “Come with me, we’ll check a map.”

It’s a short walk to Erika’s garage where she pulls out a large map and lays it across a table. The two of you note down your starting positions.

“Not as bad as it could be,” you offer.

“I suppose,” she grumbles. “Better than being flung to the edges. We’re close to the resupply points too.”

“Why do you have some marked differently?” You ask.

“We did some recon,” she replies. “Red ones are fuel only; purple is fuel and ammo.”

“The blue one?”

“Fuel, ammo, and a safe zone for repairs,” Erika says. “But getting to it would be a death trap.”

“So how are we going to do this?” You ask.

“Well, I see three options,” Erika replies. “I think you should fight your way to me, I’m at a pretty good position by the edge of the field. We can regroup and fight our way to a supply point and control it, destroy anyone that tries to use them.”

“Or?” You prompt.

You explain your plan to Erika, she looks reluctant at first, but slowly comes around to it when she realises that by taking one of the purple supply points she’ll have access to both Ammo and Fuel.

“Alright, Fritz. We’ll play it by your plan, see how it goes.” Erika grunts. “A word to the wise though, at two hours before the end I’m going to break away, and at that point, we’re enemies again.”

“Fine by me, Erika.” She nods as you say it and hands you the map. She then spins on the spot and marches towards her tank.

“She’s in a bit of a mood, huh?” You quip aloud.

“She wants to win,” Koume pipes up from behind you. “Especially since you’re involved.”

“I left that much of a mark on her?”

“Yep,” Koume replies, popping the p.

“Well then, I shan’t disappoint her.” You declare. You say your goodbyes to Koume and walk with Yuzu back to your garage.

Your crew is already up and Werewolf’s almost ready. Ruby and Axel are in a corner, sorting out ammunition. Max and Leo are checking up on the engine.

“How’s it going, all?” You ask as you walk in.

“Everything’s ready,” Max declares. “We’re going to be chewing through fuel though. This engine plus being off-road is not going to be pretty. Don’t even get me started on if we overclock the engine.”

“Ammo’s ready!” Ruby chirps from her position in your cupola. “We’ve loaded forty rounds of AP, nineteen HVAP, seventeen Suped-up HE, and all three HESH rounds.”

>”Sounds good everyone, lets roll.”

“Aye, lemme just close this up.” Max grunts. Him and Leo recover the engine and bolt down the top. On the other side of the room, Ruby and Axel have finished loading the ammunition. You can hear the breech opening and closing as Axel checks to make sure nothing is wrong as well as Werewolf’s turret moving slightly as Ruby checks her manual control.

“All good?” You ask the rest of your turret crew as you climb in.

“Yep, all good!” Ruby answers for her and Axel. A few minutes later, you hear the hatches at the front of the tank open, Max and Leo climb in, close the hatches, and Werewolf starts up.

“Ready to kill buddy?” You ask Werewolf as you pat his cupola. From what you can decipher, Werewolf’s raring to go.

Outside, is a traffic jam. Probably expected, given that a hundred tanks are trying to get to the field. It takes hours, even with help of a few marshals guiding the tanks around.

Finally, you make it to the field. Max doesn’t move too fast to conserve fuel but sure enough by 11:50 everyone is in place.

“How’s it looking, Fritz?” Ruby asks you. You look around.

“I can’t see anyone yet,” you report. “That’ll probably change soon though.”

“You can say that again,” she grumbles.

As the minutes tick down, you get ready to move.

“Alright Max let’s start heading south,” you order. “We want to find a vantage point where we can give Erika overwatch till she can link up with us.”

“On it,” he confirms. Werewolf roars to life and quickly gets up to speed. You cruise through the desert for about five minutes before you hear a mighty roar.

You duck for cover, but there’s no impact. A flash of motion catches your eye. Thanks to your elevated position you’re able to see a pair of tanks in the distance duelling it out. You pull out your binoculars and you’re able to see an MT-25 and an M4 trying desperately to knock each other out. The reason for their desperation is soon made apparent when another high calibre shell slams into the ground near them. You’re able to track that one to roughly the wooded area atop the hill you’re on.

“Erika, we got some tanks in the way that we’ll need to take care of,” you grunt. “How’s it going for you?”

“We’re engaging a few tanks,” someone you assume is her radio operator announces. “We’ve knocked two out but are coming under fire from a charioteer.”

“So, no help there,” you summarise.

“We don’t want anyone taking potshots at our rear,” you declare. “Max, take us up the hill to our east, quietly.”

“Quietly he says,” Max grumbles. He turns the tank and begins taking you up the hill. If this were any other tank or any other driver, your engine would be screaming your position for the world to hear. All you can hear is a low whine.

When you crest the ridge into the wooded area, your eyes immediately snap to the left. Sure enough, sticking out like a sore thumb is your sniper.

“Ruby, we got an Israeli M4 to our nine o’clock. Max, get us facing forwards.”

“Aye, Fritz.” Max begins to turn the tank but unfortunately it isn’t silent. You see the opposing commander’s head snap in your direction before his tank begins to turn. Then he throws a track.

“Ruby, target is immobilised,” you pass along, managing to avoid a snigger. “Fire at will.”

“On the way!” A second later, a shell follows. The result is forgone, your shell neatly slots itself into the Sherman’s engine and the flag follows shortly afterwards.

“Target eliminated.” You declare.

>Take up the Sherman’s position and wait to shoot the winner
>Use an auto success

You roll up next to the disabled Super Sherman.

“Vou got us in ze ass, mon ami!” The apparently French commander calls as you do. He looks older than you, perhaps in his late 20s.

“That’s just the nature of a battle royale,” you shout back. The man laughs at that and lights a cigarette. While he’s doing that, you focus on the battle going on below you.

It’s an intense one. The two tanks are trading shots, neither hitting. The MT-25 is faster though and manages to slip behind the enemy Sherman where it volleys a clip of its autoloader into the back. With the Sherman knocked out, you pounce.

“Ruby, if you would?” You ask.

“With pleasure,” she replies. She takes a moment to aim then lets loose.

You watch the shell scream forth. It hits the side of the tank, immobilising it immediately.

“Good kill,” you communicate over the radio. You’re about to order Max to advance when you hear another engine.

“Two o’clock, enemy Lorraine 40t,” you mutter into your radio. You take another look. The Lorraine’s pike nose is faced towards you, but its turret is aimed at the valley below.

“A Lorraine ain’t got much armour but that gun ‘ll mess up our day,” Ruby murmurs back.

>Make a called shot for the side of the turret to knock it out immediately

You snap to action.

“Ruby! Aim for the side of the Lorraine’s turret! Fire when ready!”

The Lorraine’s spotted you. You can tell because the tank stops and starts backing off as the turret turns towards you. Thankfully, Ruby’s far quicker off the draw than they are.

“On the way!”
CRACK-BOOM

The gun fires as she says it and you barely hear her through the radio. You don’t see the round, but you see the impact. The Lorraine’s gun slumps a few degrees before it would’ve reached you.

“Good kill,” you say for Ruby’s benefit. You ignore her ‘hell yeah’ and continue issuing orders.

“Leo, do a sweep with the drone, will you? Just once around?” You ask.

“Sure thing, Fritz.” You see Leo’s hatch open and the drone fly out. You track it as it circles you once. That’s when Erika’s voice crackles into your ear.

“We’ve taken out our three opponents, but we’ve been tracked,” she grunts. “We’ve got a drone up and it’s spotted a Cromwell on approach.”

“Nothing within a kilometre and a half of us,” Leo reports. “I can keep it active as we move if you want?”

“Yeah, keep it circling, Leo,” you order. “Max, take us south. By the edge of the forested area there should be a vantage point we can cover Erika from.”

“You got it, boss.” Max replies. He shifts Werewolf into gear and you start moving down the slope.

“Keep us away from the road,” you order. As Max corrects his course you climb down and into the turret.

“How are you guys feeling?” You ask the other two members of your turret crew.

“Just give me five minutes,” Ruby groans in response. Axel just shrugs.

“Well, there’s still a day and a half of this left,” you reply to your gunner’s groans.

You climb back up as you continue cruising through the desert. Erika crackles into your ear informing you that she’s eliminated the ‘idiot in the Cromwell’ and is moving slowly towards you but will need to work on her track soon.

“Fritz. I got something,” Leo informs you. “Pershing on the mountains, to our eight o’clock. Gun moving our way.”

You point your binoculars in the mentioned direction. “I can barely see it,” you mutter. “Max take us about-face. Ruby, get ready to fire.”

“Aye, Fritz.” Max responds. He swings the tank around and points it at the Pershing.

“On the way!” Ruby shouts as she fires. You watch the shell fly forth but the shot was rushed to beat the Pershing and goes wide. The Pershing panics and returns fire but the shot goes just as wide, crashing into the woods behind you.

“On the way!” Ruby shouts.

CRACK-BOOM

You let out a sigh of relief as the Pershing’s gun slumps and the tank stops moving.

“Drone shows the target’s eliminated, Fritz.” Leo informs you helpfully.

“Thanks, Leo,” you grunt. “Bring the drone back in so we can get moving. Max, the wooded area north of Erika, take us there.”

Ruby starts to climb to her feet. Given she has the best eyesight she’s usually the one pegged for lookout duty.

“Not today,” you push her back down. “I need you to kill things, Leo. Out of the tank.”

“You got it, Fritz.” Leo climbs out of his hatch and up onto the turret. You take to watching the road you came from while he watches the highway and the rock field to your east. The rest of your crew open their hatches and lean out of the tank while snacking, enjoying the respite of the shade from the desert sun.

“How’s it looking, Erika?” You ask as you watch the road. You see a T-34-85 as you say that. It trundles up the road, oblivious to your presence.

“Another twenty minutes,” she replies from somewhere beneath her tank. “Keep watching.”

“You not going to take down your drone?”

“I got the big one, eight hours is a long time.”

“Fair enough,” you concede the point. The rest of your watch is uneventful, with nothing of note except the breeze.

Erika’s engine coughs, splutters then roars.

“Done,” she announces, “let’s get moving.”

I was thinking of using the road, but considering our plans for resupply, fuel shouldn't be much of an issue, so it's better to be safe imo.

>Head along the mountain. It’ll be slower and consume more fuel but will be safer (Green)

“Let’s use the mountains, we can take shots at anyone on the road as we make our way to that resupply point.”

“The mountains, huh?” Erika repeats. “That’ll be… fun in a King Tiger.” Erika climbs back into her turret then closes the hatch. “Lead the way.”

You don’t miss the fact that you’ve been volunteered for the lead position but decide not to complain. “Max, get us moving.”

“Sure.” Werewolf rumbles to life and you take a second to listen to him. Happy with the destruction of the Sherman, but eager for more. You intend to deliver.

The going is slow. While your tank is more than suited for the terrain, it’s still difficult. More than once you need to spin up the engine a little more to get some extra torque. Erika moves more like a bulldozer, pushing through any obstacles.

“There’s a pair of tanks on the other side of the mountain range,” Erika informs you, “an AMX M4 and a GSR 3301. They seem to be engaged in a firefight together against someone else.”

“Good to know,” you mark it down on your map and continue.

“Enemy tank!” You call as you survey the ridge in front of you. “A T-34!”

“Black Forest girl didn’t see ‘em on her drone,” Max chips in.

“They’re using some kind of camouflage!” Erika defends herself. You begin to bark orders to Ruby, but the T-34 sees you and bolts heading straight for the road.

“Let’s take it out then,” you reply. “Ruby! T-34 About a kilometre, eleven o’clock!”

“I see it,” she confirms. She takes a moment to manually adjust the turret. “On the way!”

The shot whistles out of the barrel. It looks good at first, but veers slightly to the right and over the back of the tank.

“Miss,” you say observing the results.

“Aw crud… sorry guys,” Ruby murmurs. “Usually a match is over by now…”

>Ruby is now Winded

“It’s no problem, Ruby,” you reassure her. Erika fires as you do. You feel the wind as it rushes past you. Erika’s super high-velocity shell does the job, it slams into the back of the T-34 and cripples the tank.

“That’s how you do it,” Erika’s voice crackles over the radio. You can see Ruby shrink a little further as she does.

“Take the Black Forest tank off the intercom,” you order Leo. You frown at the indirect dig at your gunner. “Erika, what’s happening with the fight on the other side?”

“They’ve stopped firing,” Erika reports. “There’s no indication we’re here either.”

>Descend to the road and continue towards the supply point (Green)

“Let’s move to the road,” you reply. “Get to the supply point a little quicker.”

“Sure,” she grunts.

Erika turns to move down the mountains as do you. Max makes short work of the slope, using it to basically coast down the side till you reach the road. It makes for a slightly bumpy ride, but you suppose being economical with fuel is a good thing right now.

You’re able to move at speed on the road. You don’t use overdrive, so Erika is able to keep up, but you do make good pace. You scan the road ahead with your binoculars and a flash catches your eye.

“Enemy tank! Left fork of the road! About a kilometre and a half out!” You shout. “Ruby immediately starts swinging the gun around and you can feel Werewolf’s excitement. The reason why becomes obvious a second later when you see it’s a Sherman.

“It looks like they’re firing at something that isn’t us,” Ruby observes. “And they’re receiving a lot of fire in return.”

“There are muzzle flashes from north of the Sherman,” Erika reveals.

Another flash catches your eye. “And several from east of the Sherman too.”

My worry going West is that we'll encounter other tanks that we wouldn't be otherwise fighting. However, in order to reach this supply point, we would almost certainly have to fight these tanks in the town and to the North, so it's best to confront them now while they're already engaged with others.

“The Easy 8 has enough problems,” you declare. “Let's advance into the town and destroy whoever’s there before we turn on the supply point.”

“Moving now,” Erika confirms. The two of you take off down the road, completely ignoring the Sherman. You’re pretty sure they noticed you, but you’re not shooting at them and others are, making you a lower priority.

However, that soon becomes irrelevant when you hear a crack and the white flag pops out the top of it.

“That gun sounds like trouble,” Ruby murmurs.

“You recognise it?” You ask her.

“Sure do,” she nods. “L7 Royal Ordinance, greatest tank gun ever built.”

“Sounds like bad news then,” you summarise. “Leo, get that drone up.”

“Sure thing, Fritz.” You see the drone go up and a few seconds later you get Leo’s report.

“There’s a T20, a S35, and a Centurion in a three way-“ Leo’s interrupted by another bang. “A T20 and a Centurion in a gunfight. T20’s behind that massive rock.”

“Erika, you hear that?” You ask.

“Yes. Moving to engage the T20,” she confirms. The two of you surge forwards and get the big rock between you and the Centurion. The T20 notices the two of you and starts to turn his turret but they’re nowhere near quick enough.

Yours and Erika’s shells slam simultaneously into the back of the T20, knocking it out.

“Now the Centurion,” Erika says over comms. “From what I can see they have a good position, dug in pretty tight.”

“They have a drone up too,” Leo chips in. “It’s going to be hard to approach it.”

“How about I distract it while you flank it?” Erika offers.

“Erika, can you keep yourself out of detection radius but try to watch the eastern slope for me?” You ask.

“And what are you going to do while I do that?” She challenges you.

“I’m going to try hit it with this.” You unpack the mortar and let it thunk on the top of the turret for emphasis.

“A mortar?” She asks. “You ever use one of those before?”

“No,” you reply, “but how hard could it be?”

“Whatever, just hit the damn tank.” Erika climbs back into her tank and closes the hatch. A minute later, she begins moving north, trying to get a good shot on the eastern side of the hill.

“So Ruby,” you begin as you begin loading the mortar. “How dangerous is this L7?”

“It’s very dangerous, it could probably cut through us like a knife through butter.”

THUMP

The first mortar round whizzes out of the barrel. You watch it fly for moment then begin to load the second one. “How dangerous exactly?”

“It’s a super high velocity gun and it’s accurate as hell! I used one during a fair in Germany! I hit a plate at a kilometre!”

“You missed, Fritz. About a hundred meters too far.” Leo chips in helpfully, observing from the drone. You adjust then fire.

THUMP

“That probably says more about your skills as a gunner than the gun,” Max interjects.

“Daww, that’s sweet of you,” Ruby coos. “But it’s the real deal, only it takes way too long to load.”

“It landed right next to him, Fritz,” Leo says. “Send the next one exactly like that.”

THUMP

You wipe your forehead as you fire the last AP round. It may have only been an hour and a half, but it’s been an intense one.

“Go ahead and resupply, Erika,” you say as you begin to climb the hill. “We can take these guys.”

“If you say so,” she replies. Erika redirects and begins heading around the hill to reach the resupply point.

You quickly reach the top of the hill where you immediately begin scanning for the Centurion.

“There! Climbing that dune at ten o’clock!” You shout. Ruby quickly begins to swing the gun around but as good as she is, she can’t get the shot off in time.

“It’s behind the damn rock!” She groans. Werewolf grinds to a halt and you keep your gun trained on the rock it’s behind.

“Can we go through the rock?” Leo offers.

“And half our ammunition while we do,” Ruby snaps back. She takes a breath then continues. “If they’re still there, maybe a HESH round might deal with the rock, but we don’t have many.”

“Load the HESH, Axel. Get ready to load fast too.” You hear the breach cycling as you turn your radio to the frequency Erika gave you instead of the intercom. “Erika, get ready to fight the Centurion.”

“It’s hiding behind a rock, what’s it going to do?” She sneers back.

“We’re going to blow up the rock.”

“…”

“Erika? Do you copy?”

“You and which demolition team!?” She shouts. You take a peak in her direction and see her frantically getting her crew back into her tank and ready to fight. With Erika adequately warned you turn your attention back to the Centurion.

“Ruby, Axel. Once this rock comes down I want you to hit this sucker again a couple more times, got it?”

“Understood, Fritz.” Ruby answers for the two of them.

“Alright,” you swing your MG 131 towards the rock and pull the bolt back once. “Hit it.”

The explosion is spectacular.

Designed to go through hardened steel, the HESH round makes short work of the rock. You see fragments of rock get launched. Amusingly, a rather large chunk hits the top of Erika’s turret making a hefty clang as it does.

“Shell two on the way!” Ruby shouts. You can see the Centurion’s turret facing towards you through the rubble and smoke. A large, accurate burst of MG fire aimed at the tank gives them enough pause for Ruby to fire first.

The HVAP round whistles through the air. You track the jagged line it cuts as it races towards the Centurion before colliding with the turret.

“Hit!” You call as you hear the Centurion’s armour protest the hit. The gun slumps, but there’s no flag.

“Last shell on the way!” Ruby cries. You lose track of it completely. All the evidence you have of it existing is your smoking gun barrel and the small white flag sticking out of the Centurion.

“Hit and kill.” You can’t help but smile at the whoop of joy Ruby lets out.

>Ruby and Axel are now Tired. Each shot from now until they recover will face an increasing penalty.

“Ugh, my head,” Ruby complains. “Sorry guys, just give me five so I don’t drag us down.”

>”You’ll have plenty of time to rest soon, just hold on a little longer.”

“Hopefully there’s no one else around,” Ruby groans.

“Erika, you mind taking up an overwatch position while we resupply?”

“Depends on if you’re going to throw any more rocks at me,” she gripes but her tank begins moving up the hill.

“Thanks, Erika. Max, take us down the hill.” Werewolf slowly begins to move as you give the order. Between his off-road capability and Max’s driving skill you’re soon down the hill. “Leo, bring the drone back in when you get a chance. The rest of you, be ready to jump out and grab everything we need.

Max kills the engine as you reach the supply point. The lot of you jump out and begin looking around. It’s well-stocked. Especially since few people have had a chance to use it. Everything is also neatly sorted by type of provision and there’s plenty of each kind too.

“Max, Leo. You two grab the fuel. Axel and I will search for ammunition. Ruby, see if you can find any mortar rounds.”

The five of you set off in search of supplies. ‘Ammunition’ is pretty clearly marked and after that it’s a matter of walking past all the smaller calibres until you find ‘eighty-eight mm, German’ in a marked case. Thankfully, there’s also a pallet trolley so you don’t have to lug each shell individually.

“They only have AP here, huh?” You say to Axel as the two of you load shells onto the trolley. “Better than nothing I guess.” After loading enough shells to replace what you’ve used the two of you push the trolley back to Werewolf. When you arrive, you see Max and Leo refueling the tank while Ruby is carefully laying mortar shells in the little ammo box for the mortar.

“Did you find everything?” You ask as you and Axel begin loading the shells.

“Aye,” Max grunts.

“Everything and Stroopwafels!” Ruby crows from her position in the turret.

“Great.” The five of you load everything as fast as you can and about twenty minutes later, you’re done.

As you load up to head back up the slope, you get on the radio to Erika. “So, Erika, would you guys mind taking first watch?”

“Yes,” she replies instantly. “My crew’s been run just as ragged as yours.”

>”Fine, we’ll take first watch.”

You hear your crew groan as you say it. You can empathise and inside you feel the same way, but logic wins out.

“Max, take us up to the hill, we’ll borrow the Centurion’s entrenched position,” you order.

“Aye, Fritz,” he sighs. You trundle back up the hill. When you reach the top, you see Erika and her crew have fitted a camo net over their tank as well as a small tent right next to it.

“We should’ve brought a tent!” Ruby complains. That sparks a debate on what camping supplies are necessary for a Tankery match which you ignore in favour of talking to Erika.

“Fritz.”

“Erika,” you return the greeting.

“I reckon we do watches of four hours,” Erika says. “That’s long enough to get some decent rest. Hopefully, now that the melee of the first few hours is over we should be able to stay uninterrupted that long.”

“Sounds fine to me,” you nod. Erika, never one for small talk, turns back to her tank. You do the same and you’re pleasantly surprised to see your crew have already set up your camo net.

“How are we gonna do this, Fritz?” Max asks as you approach.

>”We’ll stay on alert.” You will be ready to spring to action if anything occurs. The status of you and your crewmates may deteriorate.
>”We’ll do it in shifts.” Depending on who’s off-shift it may take a turn to do something (Fire, move, etc.). You and your crew’s statuses won’t change.

7, 9, 17, 11 – You're able to maintain an effective and well-disciplined watch

16:00

>”We’ll do it in shifts.” Depending on who’s off-shift it may take a turn to do something (Fire, move, etc.). You and your crew’s statuses won’t change.

“Aye, sounds like a good idea, Fritz.” Max heads back towards the tank. You hadn’t brought much in the way of camping gear, but a couple of bedrolls are enough combined with the shade of the trees from the desert sun.

First watch ends up being you and Leo. You can hear Max in the tank beneath you. Axel is sprawled on one of the bedrolls, asleep and Ruby is enjoying some of the waffles she appropriated from the resupply point.

“Have you heard of the five-forty rule, Fritz?” Leo asks as the two of you scan your surroundings.

“Can’t say I have,” you answer.

“Well it became known during the war and it seemed to ring true today. It basically suggests that forty percent of the work gets done in five percent of the time or by five percent of people.”

“And that rings true today how?” You ask.

“Well, it’s been two hours out of twenty-four and about forty tanks have been knocked out. Similarly, about five tanks seem to responsible for most of those. Including us.”

“And you know that how?” You ask. Leo hands you a tablet and it’s a livestream of the event. It’s zoomed in on a fight between a T-10 heavy tank and a Patton somewhere to your far east.

“They only really show the fights and the scoreboard so far, so our position isn’t being broadcasted,” Leo explains. You spend the rest of your two-hour shift alternating between scanning the horizon and watching the stream. Not much of interest happens in either.

At the end of the two hours, you’re relieved by the other members of your crew. Ruby and Axel climb to the top of Werewolf’s turret while you and Leo climb down. Leo immediately begins attacking a can of food.

>Head over to Erika’s tank and see how her and her crew are doing.

With nothing better to do and not feeling particularly tired, you decide to head over to Erika’s tank. They’ve set up a tent next to their tank and you presume that’s where most of them are given you can only see one out in the open. It’s the one with the long ponytail, one of the three who Erika had a go at yesterday.

“Heya,” she waves as you walk over. “How’s it going?”

“Not bad,” you reply as you reach her. “I came here to ask you guys that actually.”

“That’s cute,” she smiles. “The others are asleep, I don’t think they were very tired but might as well get some sleep, right?”

“Yeah, I plan to do that afterwards too.”

You stay and chat with the girl a little longer. You reckon from the way she’s throwing shell casings around she’s Erika’s loader, a fact which she confirms.

>Reassure Ruby that she is not a drag on the team.

After you’re done checking up on team Erika, you head back to check on your crew. Axel and Ruby are both sitting on the turret as when you left them. Max is ‘on patrol’ and Leo asleep.

“Hey, Fritz!” Ruby cheers as you climb up, onto the turret.

“Hey Ruby, Axel. How’s watching going?”

“It’s boring!” She complains. “We saw a tank coming this way, but they saw all the tanks littered about and turned tail! Ridiculous! At least it gives us an opportunity to take a breather.”

“Mhm, I could feel the fighting getting to me, I don’t want to imagine how bad it got for you and Axel.”

“It got bad,” she says. Axel nods in support.

>”Well, you did a good damn job and I’m proud of you guys.”

“Gee, thanks Fritz.” Ruby mumbles. You can see a small blush on her face. Axel similarly is refusing to meet your eyes. “You’re gonna distract us from our watch.”

“I’ll leave you too it then.” You clap her shoulder once then climb down off Werewolf.

>Get something to eat yourself and try to get a message through to Yuzu.

You head to where Leo is. As you approach, he holds up a can. You nod and he chucks it at you.

“Canned sausages? I didn’t know we brought these with us.” You say as you crack open the can.

“Someone has to think of the small things,” he replies. You sit with him as you empty the can. As you’re polishing off the sausages, you open your phone. There’s no signal, but there’s a lot of good luck messages both from Yuzu and your friends at Ooarai you never got around to reading. You quickly shoot a message to Yuzu about how you and your crew are doing. It doesn’t go through, obviously, but hopefully it should when you get some signal.

>Try to get some sleep during our rest shift.

You spend the rest of your watch shift either working on Werewolf to make sure he’s in top condition or chatting which ever of Erika’s crew is awake. It turns out they have a radio capable of talking with their base camp which inevitably leads to Koume chatting your ear off. Eventually however, it’s time for your rest shift.

You’re relieved by a very grumpy looking Erika and your comment about morning people doesn’t help that. After escaping her, you head back to Werewolf where your own crew are getting ready to catch some sleep.

It’s two and a half hours later that you find yourself waking up. You can hear a low rumble. At first you mistake it for Werewolf’s engine, but his turbine doesn’t sound like that. It’s after a few minutes of it that you hear someone running your way.

“Fritz!” Someone whispers harshly. You try to focus on the voice in the darkness and you soon find Erika’s face. “Someone is resupplying!”

“How did they get so close?” You grunt as you pull yourself to your feet. “We were all looking the same way together to make sure we didn’t miss anything! They snuck in while we were looking the other way!”

“Erika,” you sigh. “That’s not how a watch works… That’s why you have at least two people watching – so you can see everything around you.”

“Well we know that now!” Erika hisses. “We just can’t start our tank without letting them know we’re here!”

“Just load up,” you grunt, “I’ll wake my crew and we’ll get to work.”

It takes a couple of minutes to rouse everyone but soon your crew are mounted and ready.

“Ruby, swing the gun around so we can take a shot at the enemy tank when it decides to leave.”

“Nooo,” she complains as she begins to turn the turret. “It takes so much effort to turn the gun so far.”

“Why not ask Werewolf nicely?” Max snipes. You can hear the scathing retort on the tip of your gunner’s tongue but she holds it.

“Hey, Werewolf?” Ruby asks. “You mind turning the turret for me?”

You’re not sure how to describe the response. If anything, you’d place it as a mental shrug. Ruby lets go of the manual turret controls, but they keep spinning. The turret continues turning until it reaches the supply depot.

“Thanks, Werewolf!” Ruby chirps before retaking the controls.

“Why haven’t you started moving yet?” Erika crackles in your ear.

“Because we don’t need to, just swing your turret around and hit them when they try to leave.” You see Erika’s turret start to move but it’s a far slower process than when you did it.

A rumble cuts through the air.

“That’ll be our visitor about to move out,” Leo remarks. You boot up the infrared rangefinder that you’ve had for a while but haven’t needed so far.

“I’ll be relying on you, Fritz,” Ruby warns. “I don’t have much in the way of night vision here.”

“No problem, Ruby,” You reassure her. The enemy tank, a Jagpanzer IV, begins to roll out. “Alright, I got him. Five hundred meters out. I’m tracking him now.” You use your turret controls to line the enemy tank up with the information you’re getting from the rangefinder. The turret shouldn’t technically move right now but you suppose it’s just Werewolf working his magic.

“I see it. Probably.” Ruby informs you. She takes control of the turret for a split second before squeezing the trigger.

The flash of Werewolf’s gun ruins your night vision. A few seconds later you see an explosion. You check your rangefinder once it recovers from the flash and sure enough, the tank is still.

“That’s a kill,” you inform Ruby. As she and Axel celebrate, you plot your next move.

>Stay mounted in case someone comes to investigate (10 minutes)

You stay in the tank for another ten minutes. It’s possible that the sounds of combat may have attracted some scavengers, coming to pick off whoever’s left. It’s tense, with none of you making much noise. Max does start the engine though, but he keeps the revs low enough it’s not too loud.

Once you’re sure no one’s coming, you let Max shut off the engine and your crew dismount. As they disperse, you head over to Erika.

>Make sure Erika knows how to do a proper watch then let your crew go back to sleep

Tap, tap tap.

You rap your knuckles against the side of the tank. It takes a minute but Erika emerges from the top of the tank.

“Fritz.”

“Erika. They shouldn’t have gotten that close to us.”

She looks like she’s going to argue for a second but just hangs her head. “Yeah, you’re right.”

“What were you doing?” You ask as you lean against her tank. Her crew begins emerging from it as well now that the threat’s gone.

“We’d all look in a certain direction and make sure nothing’s coming from there. Then we’d move on to a new one.” Erika explains.

“All of you?” You frown.

“Yeah, all five of us.”

“That’s… not how it works Erika,” you sigh. You spend the next ten minutes explaining how to do a watch. Amusingly, you see one of Erika’s crewmates taking notes as you do. Once you’re done, you make to leave but Erika stops you.

“The organisers said on the radio they’re making an announcement at 9:45,” Erika informs you. “I was going to tell you earlier, but you know…”

“We got snuck up on, yeah.” You check your watch and you have less than an hour till this announcement.

>Ask Erika to wake you up when it’s about to happen

“Right, just wake me up when it’s about to happen?”

“I will,” Erika promises. With that, you turn and head back to Werewolf.

“You done talking to the Rookies, Fritz?” Max grunts as you approach.

“They’re not rookies, Max.” Ruby berates him.

“Well they sure stood watch like some,” he quips. He gets a laugh from Leo and a snort from Axel, high praise.

As they bicker like old women you find a nice comfortable tree to rest against and close your eyes.

21:45

“Oi.” You wake at the voice. “It’s time.”

“Hello to you too, Erika.” You grumble. You stand and follow her to her tank where there’s a small laptop set up showing the livestream of the match.

GOOD EVENING LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!” A very loud blond man screams as he appears on screen. Thankfully, he doesn’t continue at that volume. “It’s been almost ten hours and we’re bringing you an overview of the situation so far!”

A map flashes on screen, showing a map of the knocked out tanks.

“Almost half the tanks that entered have been knocked out! With a hair over fifty tanks remaining we found out that over half of those left are partying up!”

The screen flashes to highlights of tanks working together including a pair of Soviet tank destroyers; a Patton and a T47 as well as yourself and Erika.

“We don’t like that but our viewers love it! So we’re offering a deal! To all the teams listed-“

The feed cuts to a list of tanks and participants, yourself and Erika included.

“- In two hours we’ll be air dropping beacons all across the field! Which any of those listed can claim! If all members of a team claim it and switch it to blue, they’ll be considered a team and split any prizes. Switch it to gold however and if you knock out your teammates we’ll double any prizes!”

The rest of the announcement is just going over some of the highlights. Of course, neither your not Erika’s attention is on that.

>”So, five hundred grand each?” See if she’ll work with you.
>”Sorry Erika, Anzu would kill me if I passed on two million dollars.”
>Refuse to acknowledge it.

Basically this >>4589512, get a beacon and turn it gold.

Our plan shouldn't change at all, this should only increase our rewards. We stick with Erika until we're the last two left.

However, I would like to propose splitting the doubled rewards 75/25 in favor of the winner of the end duel as opposed to the 100/0 it would be otherwise as appreciation for the other's teamwork, since the pot is bigger now.

“I say we get a beacon and then stick to the plan,” you say as the stream ends.

“Hn, that’s what I was going to say.” Erika grunts.

“I wouldn’t mind split-“

“No,” Erika cuts you off.

“No?” You ask.

“I’m not here for the money, Fritz. I’m here to win.” She looks frustrated as she says it, refusing to meet your eyes and looking to the night sky. “If you want the money when I win then you can have it, but I don’t want it otherwise.”

“When you win?” You ask.

“When I win,” she confirms.

“Awful presumptuous of you when you didn’t beat us last time,” you snipe.

“This time it’ll be different. I promise.”

“If you say so,” you shrug.

“How do you want to do this?” Erika asks. “We could get hunting now, or we could wait for these beacons to drop then go full search and destroy.”

>There’s no point moving out too early, wait for the beacons to drop

“Let’s wait, if we move out too early, we may end up tired when they drop.”

“Fine, I suppose I’d best prepare for night fighting then.” Erika sighs as she begins trudging towards her tank.

“Not a fan?”

“Nah, I don’t have a fancy rangefinder like you do. My gunner has night vision, but I have to use goggles. Not fun.”

“Well if we want to win a fight in the middle of the night…”

“Yeah, I know,” she sighs. “Whatever, it’s your watch now.”

21, 27 – It gets a little out of hand but it’s a better watch than they did

You head back to Werewolf and begin the process of waking your crew. Ruby is the first and easiest. A quick nudge and she’s up and yawning. Max is similarly easy, except with slightly more swearing. Leo is more of a problem. One which Ruby solves by dumping her canteen over him. Axel thankfully wakes himself upon hearing the commotion and promptly stops Leo from executing your gunner.

10:37

Lots are drawn, and for the first hour your find yourself on watch with Ruby. It’s not as professional as you would’ve liked. Upon informing her of the beacons and the result if you win, she launched into speculation about what the club would do with two million dollars. You choose not to inform her that Anzu would probably take most of it and instead play along. In the middle of describing where she’d put the Jacuzzi, Ruby freezes.

“Goggles,” she demands. You hand her the night vision goggles and she begins staring off into the distance. “North-west, take a look.” She takes off the goggles and shoves them into your hands. Sure enough, when you look North-West you can see tanks moving closer, kicking up sand.

“Get the others and get started, I’ll inform our friends.” You order. You both jump off the tank. Ruby moves towards your crew and you towards Erika.

You come to a stop in front of her sleeping form and gently nudge her shoulder. “Tanks, moving our way.”

Upon hearing that, Erika shakes the sleep out of her and jumps to her feet. “Alright, get back to your tank.”

By the time your back to your tank, it’s ready to start and your crew is loaded up.

We're already entrenched in an elevated position with camo applied, I don't see any reason to move from here. We have several passive buffs from being in this position.

Sending up a UAV might give away our position, so let's hold off for now to try and hold on to surprise, since they probably don't know we're here.

“Max, start the engine. Ruby, get the gun pointed north-west. Axel, give me a SUHE shell and get ready to engage multiple targets.” You bark out lots of orders in quick succession. Your crew, ever the professionals, quickly comply and Werewolf’s engine is soon humming as you watch the dust clouds.

“We’re ready here, Fritz,” Erika informs you. She’s entrenched about fifty metres south of you, her gun facing the same way. “Shall I put up a UAV?”

“Don’t. We don’t want to let them know we’re here,” you respond. You don’t get a verbal response, but you see her UAV being stowed away.

You turn your attention back to the approaching dust cloud through your rangefinder. It takes a good few minutes of the cloud approaching to get a clear view of what you’re fighting.

“Black Prince, one and a half kilometres North-West,” you say, attempting to guide Ruby through your rangefinder.

As you do, Erika’s gun barks, sending a shell flying. You follow the last half a second of the journey through your rangefinder. It hits the Black Prince slap bang in the middle of the turret.

“Erika hit and damaged the Black Prince,” you declare to Ruby.

The tanks begin to scatter and you’re finally able to see what you’re facing. A Black Prince, bringing up the rear followed by an Achilles, bringing up the rear. You also see a small French tank dart south, breaking away from the group.

“There’s three of them,” you inform Erika and your crew. “Ruby, do you have a shot on all of them?”

“Only the Churchill, it’s too dark to hit anything else.” She complains.

“Then hit it,” you order. It takes a second, but the gun barks and the shell flies true. You’re rewarded with a massive explosion against the turret face, but no penetration.

“Hit, no penetration.” You declare to Ruby’s grumbling. As the smoke clears you see why it failed. “They’re hiding their Hull behind a rock.”

>Let Erika deal with the Black Prince and engage the Frog...damn Frenchmen

Given the good work Erika’s doing, you decide to leave her to it.

Crack!

A shot from the Achilles whistles overhead. Since it’s just fired it’s now not an immediate threat, leaving you free to deal with the damn French light tank. You’re having trouble tracking it in the dark, the tank keeps weaving up and down the opposite side of the dune, it’s using as cover, never exposing itself long enough to let you lay a shot.

You hear another roar from Erika’s tank. Another shell screams out of her Tiger’s barrel and slams into the Black Prince.

“Target eliminated,” Erika reports with no small amount of satisfaction. The AMX takes that opportunity to make his presence known. It stops for all of ten seconds, time in which you frantically swing the turret to bring Ruby to bear. Unfortunately, your shot goes wide while his slams into your gun mantlet.

You’re thrown about a bit, but otherwise unharmed from the powerful hit.

“You guys alright?” You grunt as you pick yourself up.

“We’re fine,” Ruby answers for herself and Axel. You watch as the AMX scurries behind the resupply point to avoid any return fire.

“If you can keep my flank safe, I can charge the Achilles,” Erika offers.

“We can do that,” you reply. As you do, another shot from the Achilles whizzes overhead. It missed again, thankfully, but it was far closer than last time. “Max, we need to cut off that AMX.”

“Aye, I’m on it.” Instead of reversing out of your dugout, Max just engages low gear and goes up over the top. You can hear Leo laughing and Ruby berating him as he does but it gets you out without exposing the rear of your tank, so you have no complaints.

“Leo, launch the AMX, give Erika some targeting help.” You order as you begin rumbling down the hill. You see Erika next to you begin to move forward towards the Achilles and Leo on the radio to her, giving ranging information. It works, and a minute later you hear him calling out a hit Erika landed on it.

As you continue down the hill, you cock your MG. Ruby pre-emptively rotates the turret a little bit and sure enough, you spot it.

You point the rangefinder straight towards it and start calling out targeting info.

“Four hundred meters ahead of us!” You call. It doesn’t take Ruby a second to fire.

“On the way!” She shouts as she lets a round loose. You watch with no small amount of satisfaction as it slams into the smaller tank, stopping it in its tracks.

Then, you unleash with your MG. Leo quickly realises what’s happening and follows up with a burst from his machine gun too. You leave the French tank so disoriented they’re unable to fire.

It could be rerolled, but remember you're shooting at a tank with about 50mm of armour with a HV 88mm gun.

Base DC 10 + Gun Calibre/10 (x0.5 if Short Barrelled/Howitzer) (x1.5 if High Velocity) - Armour Thickness/10

This is the formula I use, so feel free to plug the numbers in.

It comes out to 17 against 50 mm of armor (without considering Mackensen buff, which would put it at 18), so we penetrate.

10 + (88/10 = 8) (* 1.5) - (50/10)

DC = 10 (base) + [9(gun calibre) x 1.5(high velocity)] - 5 (enemy armour) + 1 (Mackensen bonus) = 20

14 < 20 = success

Hope this helps clear it up

I'm writing an essay for my history degree right now, haha

>Do to the French as your ancestors did to them

You look at your prey. The tank commander of the AMX is out of her cupola, frozen staring at you and your tank.

You see her arms beginning to move upwards, but you have no time for that and you don’t see a white flag.

“Ruby… take the trash out, please?” You ask your gunner.

“With pleasure,” she answers. Werewolf’s gun barks and the AMX goes flying. Thankfully the commander got back into her tank so wasn’t launched but you watch the tank roll over from the force of the hit with no small amount of pleasure. For a moment you think you hear Preußens Gloria, weird given you’re from Bavaria.

You hear another sharp crack.

“Achilles eliminated,” Erika reports through the radio. “How’s it going on your end?”

“It’s like 1871 again,” you reply. That gets a laugh from your crew and a confused ‘huh’ from Erika so you explain. “AMX eliminated.”

“Good, I think they were heading for the supply dump, not us,” Erika summarises. “Hence they were surprised to see us.”

“So, what now?” You ask, looking at your watch. “We still have an hour till the drop.”

“Well, we could resupply, make sure we’re at one hundred percent everything or we could set up and prepare for more people trying to resupply before the drop.”

“We have barbed wire that might be useful for that, Fritz.” Leo reminds you.

>Put up barbed wire surrounding the paths to the supply depot
>Recall UAV

“Good idea, Leo. Bring in the UAV and we’ll get started.” You quickly switch yourself from the intercom to the radio. “Erika, we’re going to set up some barbed wire, make it hard to reach this supply depot.”

“Good idea," she replies. “I’ll set up on the hill while you do that.” You watch for a second as Erika’s tank pulls an about-turn then starts trundling up the hill. The minute she’s out of the way, you and your crew get to work. It’s not too hard, just approach where it needs to go, hope out of the tank with Leo and unravel the wire. You get snagged on it a couple of times, but you’re soon done putting down both spools of barbed wire. They’ve been placed to cut off both easy routes to the supply point. With you and Erika on the hill, it should be an easy kill if anything gets stuck in it.

“Waddya think the chances are someone’s going to get caught in the wire?” Ruby asks as she kicks your driver lightly.

“Depends,” he answers as he bats Ruby away. “If they have night vision? Low. If they don’t? Easy pickings.”

“Ooh, easy pickings, we like the sound of that, don’t we Axel?” She says as she nudges your loader. You ignore the casual conversation as you reach your old position at the top of the hill. Getting the wire set up didn’t take too long, leaving you with forty-five minutes till the drop.

>Let your crew get a little rest and ask Erika to take over the last bit of the watch tonight.

6 – Your watch is something that professionals would be proud of

00:00

>Just stand the watch as you normally would.
>Resupply 10 minutes before the beacon drop

You don’t say anything to Erika, if she wants to stay up or relax, you’ll leave her to it. You and your crew however continue your watch. It’s a great watch, perhaps the best one you’ve ever done. No angle goes unwatched and no movement goes unnoticed. You’re sure that your spiritual ancestors of the Wehrmacht, as well as all your teachers, would be proud of this watch. If they could see you that is. But they can’t, so you have the best kind of watch possible – an uneventful one.

About ten minutes to midnight, you ask Erika to cover you as you head down to the supply point you control. Erika snorts when you ask but moves to cover you anyway. You quickly fill up on fuel and ammo and offer to do the same for Erika, but she declines.

As you reach the top of the hill again, Leo opens the livestream.

”HELLO LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!!!” The same very shouty man begins as you tune in. “The planes carrying the drops have been launched and on the screens behind me you can see the locations of the drops!”

Leo takes a screenshot of the map then opens it. Erika looks over your shoulder at the map.

“There’s a lot of them to the north,” she observes. “Might be worth heading up, making sure we can get one.”

“There’s also a pretty isolated one to our west,” you suggest. “Might be less fighting that way.”

“Or the one to the south? Next to that Cathedral ruin?” Ruby points out.

“Or the easy one next to the mountain range,” Max drawls, tapping the screen.

Since the group of 3 that we just took out came from the North West, that general area should be free of other tanks. The East and North are unknown to us, and probably full of enemies (not to mention both us and Erika perform poorly in urban environments), and it's likely there were at least a few in the South West that we didn't quite clean up that would almost certainly go to the cathedral beacon.

5, 4 – Werewolf
3, 9 – Erika
3, 6 – KV-2
2, 18 – Easy 8

00:10

>Insist on heading to the isolated drop to your west (Blue)

“There are a lot of drops in the city,” you allow, “but neither of our tanks do well in the city so I don’t think it’d be too smart to go that way.”

Erika begins to argue, but you see her realise you’re on to something, so she bites her tongue. “What do you suggest instead?”

“The one to the west of us, we’ve taken out a lot of tanks coming from that direction so it’s liable to be pretty empty.” As you explain you can see Erika nodding along to it.

“Alright, fine,” she allows. “Let’s get going then, no time to waste.” Erika turns around and begins speed marching to her tank. You nod to your crew and they scramble to do the same.

The engine’s still warm so starting up takes barely a second. A few minutes later, you and Erika are turned around and heading west. You’re careful to avoid the barbed wire you placed but as soon as you’re past it you gun it up the slope, pulling slightly ahead of Erika.

You pause for her at the top before taking off again more slowly, to keep formation with her. Erika’s on the outside, giving her a better view of the road.

“Fritz, Easy 8 and a KV-2 on the road, heading away from us.” Erika crackles through the radio. “They’ve spotted me but if we hit them quickly enough, we might be able to stop them escaping.”

“Don’t worry about that Erika,” you reply. Werewolf pulls up alongside Erika and you immediately start range-finding the targets. Sure enough, you spot them, rear out, and quickly turning.

>”Ladies first.” Let Erika pick her target and take the other.
>”Dibs on the Sherman.” You’re sure Werewolf will appreciate it.

“Hey! What!?” Erika protests as you call your target. You ignore her though and continue calling out targeting information for Ruby. The enemy tanks begin to respond. The KV-2 begins turning far quicker than you’d have expected it to. It even gets a shot off! It goes way over your head but it’s somewhat impressive, nonetheless.

“On the way!” Ruby’s shout ends your musings. You watch the shell shoot forward and slam into the back of the floundering Sherman. You feel an inordinate amount of glee and it takes you a second to place it as second hand, originating from Werewolf.

“You’re welcome, bud.” You laugh as you watch Erika line up a shot. The KV-2 managed to turn about thirty degrees in the time it took you to kill the Sherman. It doesn’t get any further, Erika ending it with a well places shell into the engine block.

“KV-2 eliminated,” Erika confirms.

“Tell her gunner it was a nice shot!” Ruby pipes up.

You shrug and pass it along. “My gunner says to tell your gunner it was a nice shot.” You can’t see too much through the darkness, but you can see Erika’s head snap to you, slightly confused.

“My gunner says thanks to your gunner?” Erika offers back. “Shall we keep moving?”

12, 9 – Werewolf
10, 1 – Erika

00:25

>Use the road to get closer before scaling the hill (Blue)

“Take us onto the road, will you Max?” You ask your driver. He obliges, you climb down the mountain, Erika following. It takes a few minutes as you don’t want to go too fast and destroy your suspension or any more roadwheels but you quickly make it to the bottom of the small valley. You make sure to get out of Erika’s way. She’s not moving that fast but any collision with a Königstiger would be bad news.

After a short cruise down the road, you make sure to go up the slope first for the same reason. It takes some to reach the top and your engine’s RPM tips into the red once or twice but it’s uneventful. More impressively, Erika managed to do the same in her tank.

As you approach the summit of the hill, you spot the drop. It’s a wooden box on a parachute, with lights all over it making it very obvious.

“Can you see anyone?” Erika asks over the radio as she scans the top of the hill.

You do the same. A cursory examination both visually and through the rangefinder reveals no lurkers watching the drop. You spend another minute watching anyway but nothing comes of it. “I got nothing Erika.”

“Good,” she hops out of her tank and starts walking towards the crate. After a moment’s hesitation, you do the same. By the time you reach it, Erika’s already opening it. Inside, cushioned by lots of bubble wrap are the beacons. She hands you one which you examine.

It’s a rather simple design. A thick metal donut with what looks like a light in the middle. Underneath the light is a small sliding switch labelled ‘blue’ on one side and ‘gold’ on the other.

“Right, we can flip these later,” Erika grunts as stands. She walks over to her tank and after a moment’s hesitation, puts the beacon against her tank. It sticks. “Magnetic,” she explains.

You walk back to Werewolf and do the same, attaching it with a dull thunk.

>Suggest heading back to your prepared position

“Let’s head back to our position then, shall we?” You suggest to Erika over the radio. “We have what we came here for so there’s no need to stay.”

“I know, you don’t have to explain it to me,” Erika snaps back. You look down to Leo who just shrugs. Women he mouths. You climb back up and open your hatch as Erika sets off. Werewolf’s engine starts with a roar then you follow slowly afterwards.

The drive back is uneventful. You’ve already cleared the area of any enemies so it’s basically a leisure cruise. You scale the hills just as easily as last time, though you see something that wasn’t their last time.

“Max! Full stop!” You order. Werewolf screeches to a halt and Erika behind you stops quickly once she notices you’re stopped.

“What is it?” She asks over the radio.

“The barbed wire to the south, there’s someone stuck in it. An IS-2.” You reply.

“And they haven’t noticed us?” She asks, slightly confused.

“Probably too absorbed trying to get rid of the barbed wire.” You reply.

“Eh, I suppose it doesn’t matter,” she says. As she does, her turret begins to rotate, aiming at the immobilised IS-2.

Result – they notice but Erika deals with them

No loss of a reroll since Erika dealt with them

>Let her execute them

You decide to leave it to Erika but prepare just in case anyway.

“Load the HVAP, will you Axel?” You ask. “Hold fire for now though Ruby.”

“Fritz…” Ruby whines but you stand strong as Erika’s gun finishes moving.

That’s when you notice the IS beginning to move – or trying to given the barbed wire stuck in the track.

“They’ve spotted us, Erika.” You say casually.

“Irrelevant,” she snaps back. “Fire!” She shouts the second bit so loud you can hear it from Werewolf without using the radio.

Her gun fires. You frown as the round leaves the barrel; you have the same gun as Erika, though slightly shorter, so that shouldn’t be the case. The answer to that question is answered when a massive explosion blooms against the IS-2.

You squint at the power of the blast. When the smoke clears, you see the gun’s damaged and the front armour plate battered. A white flag hangs limply from the top of the turret.

“I wasn’t expecting that,” you tell Erika over the radio.

“Suped-up high explosive,” she replies. “Very effective.”

“Haven’t seen you use one of those before,” you say. Max slowly begins to move again, down the slope towards the hill with your dug-out.

“Black Forest adapts,” Erika says cryptically before following. It takes a few minutes to reach your old positions, but you arrive and quickly set back up.

>15, 52 – Not the greatest watch you’ve ever done.

You’ve done better. You realise that about ten minutes into your watch. You try not to slip but after thirteen hours of on and off fighting it’s almost inevitable.

There’s no harm if it’s just for a few minutes. You reason to yourself. As Max and Ruby get into a heated debate about the intricacies of operation Bagration, you find yourself getting drawn into it. Max is of the opinion that it was the first true Blitzkrieg, discounting Fall Gelb as a wild shot in the dark that somehow hit. Ruby’s about to come to his defence when your ears perk up.

CRACK

You instinctively duck at the sound of a large gun firing. The shell whistles past you and explodes as it hits a rock behind you.

You and your crew leap to action. Leo takes off running towards Erika to alert them to what’s happening while the rest of you clamber into Werewolf.

“Where did it come from?” You demand as you begin surveying your surroundings.

“Somewhere to the north!” Ruby responds. Max frantically starts the engine and soon Werewolf is howling. Erika’s Tiger follows a few seconds later and soon after Leo jumps back into the tank.

“Fritz! What’s happening!” Erika demands over the radio.

“We’re under fire by someone with a high calibre gun from the north,” you reply.

“That helps!” She retorts angrily. You don’t bother replying and instead focus on trying to figure out how to get out of the mess you’re in.

>Launch your drone and ask Erika to launch hers (Blue)

“Erika, launch your drone and send it north-northeast. We’ll do the same but west.” You say into the radio.

“We’re on it,” she replies. A few seconds later you hear a gentle whirring as Erika’s drone passes overhead. A minute later, yours follows, heading slightly left of Erika’s in order to cover the area roughly to the north.

The next few minutes are just waiting. No one says anything, all you can hear is the hum of the engine and all you can see when you duck back into the tank is everyone staring at Leo’s tablet.

CRACK

You climb back up in time to see an explosion in the sky.

“Leo?” You ask.

“Flak?” He guesses. “Both of our drones are still up and if they’re on a slope they could get enough elevation…”

“Is that possible, Ruby?” You ask. “A flak shell?”

“Well, a lot of tank guns are converted AA guns so yeah,” she replies. “But we’ve never needed a flak shell because you know, no aerial targets. Our gun elevation also isn’t really high enough.”

“Either way, I have a rough location – that hill to the northeast, between the rocks.” Leo chips in again. “Don’t know where though.”

“We can work with that,” you nod. “Ruby, if it was you on that hill, where would you be?”

“Map,” she demands. You chuck her yours and she takes a second to look at it. “Foliage to the north of the hill. Can also reverse down the slope to get a high firing angle.”

“Okay,” you consider that for a second and a plan begins forming.

>Start popping smoke then move west to try flanking while Erika covers you (Orange)

“Max, I’m going to keep the turret facing roughly north and start popping smoke. I want you to get us to what’s left of the big rock that Centurion was hiding behind.” You then switch to the radio. “Erika, I’m going to start heading west to flank them, cover me will you?”

“Sure, just try not to get yourself killed.”

With Erika on board, you begin. Max expertly manouver Werewolf and you pop the smoke as you’re at your most exposed. There’s a crack, and another shell whizzes through the smoke but Max is already a hundred meters away, Werewolf roaring down the slope.

You make short work of the ground, throwing up rocks and sand as you travel. If this had been during the day you’d probably have been spotted by now. Thankfully, it isn’t so you haven’t and you’re able to reach the other hill unmolested.

“Alright! Ruby! The Bush! About a kilometre and a half north. Whenever you’re ready.” You order. There’s nothing for a moment, just her breathing on the intercom.

“On the way!” She shouts. You watch a shell whizz out the barrel. It’s followed by a small explosion, telling you it’s hit something and detonated. Erika follows up a moment later, her shell doing the same.

This thing has flak, sending the drone in close doesn't strike me as terribly wise
>>
>>4593746

I highly doubt they’ve loaded flak since they’re now engaged with two tanks. Flak is not ideal for engaging tanks, so logically, they ain’t gonna have it loaded.

Not to mention flak is not proximity triggered, it’s a timed fuse in most cases, meaning sending the drone in at a lower altitude means that flak is gonna be useless.
>>
>>4593775
I mean, they've already shot flak in this engagement, go complain to them about how it's not logical.

>Send the drone in close for confirmation, but be prepared to flank if not dead.

“Leo, send the drone in. Let’s find out whether they’re knocked out or not.” You order.

“What if they shoot it down?” Max asks as Leo moves the drone closer.

“I mean, if they have a pintle gun then the drone’s probably screwed.” Ruby opines. “But we don’t have to worry about the main gun.”

“Why not?” Max asks again.

“Even if it’s a proximity fuse, it takes a second or two to arm. Their gun, probably as big as ours? A second will put it a thousand meters up.” Ruby explains.

“So, bring the drone in low,” you order. Leo does so and while the greenery is destroyed from the force of the explosions there’s no tank to be seen.

“If there’s nothing there, that means it survived.” You declare. “Max, continue bringing us around to flank them.”

“Aye, Fritz. Moving.” Max answers. The engine picks up quickly, dashing you further north. You keep an eye on the last known location in case you can pick anything out moving nearby.

As you approach the edge of the hill you’re on, you see something glinting in the darkness.

“Max, full stop!” You order. You quickly turn on the night vision goggles and take another look. There, turret smoking in two separate locations, a Super Pershing sits, looking straight at you.

“Ruby! Super Pershing! Eight hundred meters! 12 O’clock!” You shout. She immediately begins adjusting the gun but the Super Pershing, already waiting, fires first.

You hear the crack then feel the hit.

You’re rocked by the explosion against your turret, but Werewolf holds firm.

American tank. You think mutedly Werewolf doesn’t like those. Sure enough, you can feel him in the back of your head, focused on the Super Pershing like a predator.

“On the way!” Ruby shouts as she returns the favour. It hits and detonates against the Super Pershing’s front plate. You can feel Werewolf’s glee before the smoke clears and he only gets giddier when you confirm the damage.

“Ruby! The machine gun port!” You order.

“I’m on it!” She shouts back. You can hear Axel frantically loading the gun, but they fired seconds earlier and those seconds make the difference.

You quickly snatch up your MG, cock it, and let loose. You try aiming for the turret but at the range you’re at you’d be happy to hit it at all.

It works.

The Pershing seems to hesitate for just a second at the stream of high calibre machine gunfire. It’s not long, but it’s long enough for Axel to finish loading.

“On the way!” Ruby shouts as she fires. The shell screams out the barrel. You brace for the return fire but instead, you’re rewarded with an explosion. When you look up, you see the Super Pershing disabled, the armour around the machine gun port destroyed from the detonation and the gun slumped.

“Leo, send the UAV over the Super Pershing,” You order. “Bring it higher too.”

Leo complies and the screen gets passed up to you.

“Super Pershing knocked out,” you confirm. “Good job guys.”

“You done yet?” Erika asks over the radio. “Or are you still because you’ve been knocked out?”

“It’s dealt with,” you reply. “Thanks for your ‘help’.”

“Don’t fight where I can’t see you them then,” Erika dismisses your complaint.

>Head back to your position. (Orange)
>Recall UAV

You do a quick visual sweep of your surroundings.

“Leo, grab the UAV. Max, take us back to our position.” You order. You’re stationary for a moment to grab the UAV and once Leo’s reclaimed it, you set off.

It’s not a long drive. It’s not a short one either. You have to climb back up the hill you came over to get to your spot. It’s a rather long way around, but it has to be done to avoid the barbed wire that you set up around the supply point. Even if it doesn’t get anyone else, getting the IS-2 has more than paid for it.

You’re soon climbing the hill yours and Erika’s positions are set upon. As you reach the top, you see Erika’s tank crowded around her tank.

“What’s wrong?” You call out as you arrive. Max guides the tank to your fighting position, and you hop out of the tank and walk over to them.

“What happened?” You ask again. You peek over Erika’s shoulder and look. “The track?”

“The track,” she sighs. “We used a temporary replacement for it earlier. Should’ve lasted us the match but it fell off. We’re going to fit an actual track link which will take a while.”

“How long?” You ask, eyeing the clock. 1:35, twenty-five minutes till the end of your shift.

“Maybe an hour,” she says.

>”Good luck with that.” Leave it to them, continue as normal.

Erika looks like she’s about to reject the offer outright but pauses and nods.

“Yeah, we could use the help,” she replies. “We- I’d appreciate it.”

“Sure thing, I’ll round up some volunteers.” You say. As they get started, you head back to Werewolf.

“Anyone feel like repairing a track?” You ask. Max and Leo look at each other, have some unsaid conversation then stand up and begin walking.

“It beats taking watch!” Max calls over his shoulder before you can ask why.

“I mean, he does have a point,” Ruby concedes. “Watch sucks.”

“And yet it must be done,” you sigh. “Let’s get to it.”

>Rolled 1 – A watch to be envied. You manage to do it so efficiently that your entire crew can rest, and the watch gets done… a shame it’s only for thirty minutes.

Those twenty-five minutes might be your crowning moment so far. Killing tanks? Impressive yes, but everyone here can do that. What everyone, including yourself sometimes, can’t do is a good watch, but here you manage it.

You manage to so efficiently rotate it between yourself, Axel, and Ruby that all of you can catch a few ZZZs as well as maintaining all around vision.

At almost the stroke of the hour, Max and Leo return. They promptly dump water bottles over the top of themselves then go to sleep, ignoring Ruby’s protests at them using limited resources when it won’t even help.

At about five minutes past two, you hear an alarm and a groan from the Black Forest side of your little encampment. Once you’re sure they’re up and aware, you’re content to relieve yourself and your crew of your watch.

>Chat to Werewolf, see what the sixth member of your crew thinks of all this.

At the conclusion of your watch, you walk the few steps to your tank and place your hand on the side of his hull. Before you get a chance to ask anything, you’re immediately assailed by visions. It takes you a good minute to get your bearings. When you finally recover, you’re able to focus on what Werewolf is thinking of.

“Are you just replaying the battle with the Super Pershing?” You ask, quizzically.

Rejection, denial. From what you feel you realise you got it wrong. You ‘watch’ a little bit longer.

“Not just the Super Pershing? Those Easy eights and the Super Sherman too?”

Acceptance, happiness, agreement. You’ve figured it out. You can’t help but laugh at that.

“A bit of a one-track mind you got there, bud,” you laugh.

Denial, a tattered American flag.

“Oh, so it’s just because we’re in America?” You deadpan. On thinking of a flag, you look up to your own. You can’t really make out the details in the darkness, but you can still see it gently fluttering. There’s a small hole or two. You’re not really sure how they got there but they could probably be patched pretty easily.

>Get some sleep, Erika will wake you if anything happens.
100, 47, 42, 11 – Watch? What’s that?

Before you go to sleep, you cast an eye towards Erika’s crew. They seem to have improved from the last time they held a watch so you’re content to leave them to it.

3:00

Less than an hour later, for the second time today, you’re shocked out of what you’re doing by a shell firing.

You roll off the bedroll and you’re rewarded by a squeak of pain as you land atop Ruby. You grunt an apology to her and a silent one to Hana as another shell from a different gun fires.

“That’s gotta be within a couple hundred meters of us,” Ruby wheezes as you help her to her feet.

>Mount up first, figure everything else out later

You help Ruby to the tank as the rest of your crew scramble to mount up too. Max, Leo, and Axel climb into their positions in various states of undress. You climb into your cupola and take a second to get your headset on. It’s useless for a moment until Leo clicks the radio on from his position.

“Erika! Do you know what’s happening!?” You ask as you begin trying to figure out what’s happening.

“Gunfire, very close to us!” She answers.

“That’s it?” You ask. “You lot were meant to be on watch!”

“We were!” Erika snaps back.

“Watching the stars maybe,” Leo grumbles over the intercom. You can hear Max laugh at that but ignore it in favour of figuring out what’s going on.

You’re rewarded by what sounds like a pipe bomb, followed by the crack of a gun. Things are silent for a moment apart from your heavy breathing before you hear an engine humming dangerously as something accelerates. It’s echoed by what you think is another engine, both getting louder and louder.

“Ten thirty,” you say into the intercom. Ruby swings the gun around far faster than she should’ve been able to. You ready yourself to give the order to fire as the engines get closer and closer.

CRUNCH

The engine noises end loudly and no tank climbs over the hill. You sit there in silence for a moment, trying to figure out what happened

Perhaps they got stuck in the wire? They may have been in combat with someone else. This presents an interesting situation. If they are in combat with someone else, it may be best to wait it out and let them shoot each other. But if they aren't and got caught in the wire, we should capitalize on that as soon as possible and knock them out while they're immobilized. Not an easy choice, and I don't want to leave our cover in case we haven't been spotted yet, and any other tanks might believe the drone belongs to their opponents that they're currently fighting, so:

You cock your MG.

“Ruby, Leo prepare your machine guns,” you order. “And send the drone out, Leo. Have a look at what’s happened down there.”

“Sure thing,” he answers. You hear the cocking and reloading of machine guns before Leo opens his hatch and chucks the drone out.

“Drone’s on the way,” he reports. It takes a minute but soon the drone’s on station.

Leo bursts out laughing.

“Ye alright, mate?” Max asks from next to him. “Ya get hit somewhere ‘nd we didn’t notice?”

“I’m fine,” he snickers. “They aren’t though.”

“Show me,” you order. The control tablet gets passed up the tank to you. You take a look and see an odd sight.

A French armoured car has collided with a SP1C. You don’t know why the collision happened, but it’s head-on. Both are smoking, white flags raised. What’s even more unexpected, are the crews of the two tanks, who’ve climbed out and are now having an argument about something. The drone doesn’t pick up sound, but you can hear them vaguely from your position atop the hill.

“So uh, what do we do now?” Ruby asks. “I woke up and got to shoot nothing…”

>Head down and ask them to argue elsewhere

>Ask Erika if she has enough night vision gear for her crew to perform lookout/ why you didn’t know they were there

You let your crew go and the four of them slowly drift out of Werewolf and back to whatever they were doing before, amounting to have a snack then go to sleep for them. You however walk over towards your ally.

Erika’s crew are only beginning to dismount when you arrive. You stand a couple of meters away as they dismount. Erika climbs down last.

“They got awfully close without being spotted,” you say neutrally.

“They did,” Erika nods.

“If they’d been coming up the hill, we wouldn’t have known till our tanks were knocked out.”

“I know okay!? No need to rub it in!” Erika snaps. You just raise an eyebrow. She sighs and looks back up. “It won’t happen again; the problem is dealt with.”

“Do you need night vision equipment? We have a pair of goggles if you need them,”

“We have enough,” she replies. “Thanks for the offer but you can go back to sleep.”

“If you say so,” you shrug. Erika turns on her heel and begins marching back towards her crew. You do the same.

>Just go back to sleep

With nothing better to do, you head back to your bedroll. Ruby’s munching on the waffles she looted, and the others are asleep.

“Waffle?” She asks through a mouth full of them. You nod as you take a seat on your bedroll. She chucks a packet at you which you catch out the air and tear open.

“We’re in the top twenty-five percent,” she says.

“Only twenty-five tanks left?” You ask as you bite into the caramel-ly goodness.

“Yup,” she replies popping the p. “It’s crazy that we’ve got so far.”

“Yeah, when…” she replies. “Not if.”

“Not if,” you confirm. “In six hours, we’ll be the last men standing.”

“Kings of the desert huh?” She asks. “I could get behind that.”

You don’t sit and chat much longer. As much as you’d like to, sleep is a precious commodity for the next few hours so you try to get as much of it as you can. You drift off to the sounds of a fistfight between the crews that collided…

5:55

You wake up almost four hours later. The sun is pouring through the trees, making a nice warm morning to wake up to. The rest of your crew is in varying stages of awake-ness. Axel is wide awake but has been relegated to the role of Ruby’s pillow while Max and Leo are raiding the rations packed onto Werewolf for breakfast.

“Morning, Fritz. Best couple hours of the match so far ey?” Max asks as you wake up.

“It was nice to get some rest for once,” you nod. “How long have you guys been up?”

“Maybe ten minutes?” Leo offers as he pulls out a can of beans. He offers the can to you, but you decline with a shake of your head.

“Any noise from our friends?” You ask gesturing towards Erika’s Tiger. Now it’s Leo’s turn to shake his head.

“Nah, they seem to be watching properly now, but they haven’t said anything.” He says.

You spend the next few minutes attempting to wash up with the little water allotted to it by Quartermaster Ruby and chewing on a protein bar. As the clock hits six, you begin to walk over to Erika.

“How was watch?” You ask as you get closer.

“Boring thankfully,” she replies. “We’re down to about twenty tanks in total, just so you know.”

“That’s more than I expected.”

“It’s a big space with a shrinking number of tanks,” she grunts as she unpacks a bedroll. “Keep an eye on the livestream in case they turn things on their head.”

>”Sweet dreams.”

Erika doesn’t reply, but you see her roll her eyes before she rolls over, ending the conversation. You head back to Werewolf and begin to set up watch schedules.

8:00

>13, 43, 15, 37 – You’ve done better, but not bad.

The first watch ends up being you and Max, while the others watch the livestream. You’re not as good as that last twenty-five minutes. You get distracted every so often and that isn’t helped by Max being Max. Thankfully the distractions don’t really last longer than a minute and the two of you are able to maintain an effective watch. You see sand being thrown up far to the south at one point, but it’s too far away to see what it was that was approaching.

That’s how most of your two hour shift goes, seeing something in the distance and preparing to scramble for action but the tank moves away, leaving you nothing to do.

“Hey, they’re making an announcement!” Leo informs you as your shift is about to end. You gesture to Axel to take over for you for a moment as you watch, it’s almost his shift anyway. By the time you’ve reaches Leo’s screen, it’s already started.

“…tank are dwindling! Only twenty competitors remain! Action is also dwindling which we can’t have! From 10 am today, we’re going to begin transmitting the out of bounds zone over the radio and over livestream! Remember! It decreases on the hour, every hour! Ladies and Gentlemen, we’re coming to the end of this epic saga! Who! Will! Win!?”

Leo turns down the livestream as you consider what’s been said.

“So, the first boundary change will be at eleven?” He asks.

“Seems like it,” you nod.

“You going to tell the Black Forest lot?”

>”Nah, I’ll let them sleep.”

>”I’ll tell anyone that’s awake, and the rest when they wake up."

“Yeah, probably for the best they’re in the loop,” Leo nods. “Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a watch to go on.”

Leo walks off to take his position. You begin to walk towards Erika’s crew but make sure to find sticky notes and a pen. It’s hard – sticky notes aren’t standard issue, but Axel has some with his drawing supplies that you happily borrow.

You walk over to Erika’s tank. Most of her crew are asleep from those you can see on the bedrolls, including Erika herself. You can hear noises inside the tank though. You walk over to the tank and tap on the side.

“Anyone home?” You ask as you do. When you say that, you hear movement from inside the turret. A second later a girl with pigtails pops out the top of the turret.

“Hi!” She says it loudly but immediately winces, looking to her sleeping crewmates. “Hi,” she repeats, slightly quieter. “How can I help you?”

“I’m Fritz, commander of Werewolf,” you jerk your finger towards your tank.

“Shima,” she replies. “Eririn’s gunner.”

“Eririn, huh?” You ask at the nickname.

“Yeah, she doesn’t like it so that’s why I use it.” Shima grins back. “How can I help?”

“They’re going to start shrinking the boundaries from around ten,” you say. “Two hours from now.”

“Oh! That’s important! I should note that down!” She starts patting her pockets for a pen, but you just hold up the sticky notes and pen you borrowed from Axel. “Nice! Make a note and stick it somewhere Eririn will see would you?”

“Sure thing,” you reply. You scrawl the important information down on the note, then stick it to her forehead.

“Nice,” Shima snorts. “She’ll definitely see that!”

“That’s the point,” you shoot back.

“I like your style, man,” Shima laughs. “If you need anything else, I’m in here tooling away. Otherwise see ya later.”

You wave goodbye to the girl as she disappears back into the turret.

With that done, you’re left with almost two hours till the end of your shift and you get new information on the boundaries.
