Friday 20th June (Day 104)

You are Fritz Hermann, Ace Tanker and Commander of the Panther II ‘Werewolf’. Currently, you are watching your sister as she sleeps in a hospital bed. Yuzu, who watched her overnight is napping in the bed you used last night. You hear a knock on the door and assuming it to be one of the nurses who apparently visited periodically during the night you say for them to come in.

You are not prepared for the door to slam open and Rosehip to combat roll into the room followed closely by Layla.

“It is I, Rosehip! Here to see how Erika is doing!” She shouts.

“And me! Layla!” Layla follows up, equally as loudly. You cringe as they shout, especially given two-thirds of the room’s occupants are asleep.

“Bleh.” You hear from the bed you’re standing next to. You look down and see Erika yawning as she stretches. One-third of the room’s occupants. You look to Rosehip and Layla.

> Give the Commander Glare

You give the two of them a flat look. They look around the room and see the sleeping form of Yuzu as well as Erika who’s slowly waking up.

“Oh,” Rosehip says, considerably less energetic than before. “Uh, our bad.”

“Your bad indeed.” You echo. “There are other people in here too you know, with far worse injuries than Erika’s.”

“Oops,” Layla says, scratching her head. “We’ll ah, go wait in the lobby?”

> “You can stay as long as you’re quiet.”
> Go get breakfast

You say as you stand. “I’m going to go get some breakfast for Yuzu and myself, could you sit with Erika while I go?”

“Yes sir!” Rosehip whisper-shouts while saluting. It’s still louder than you’d have liked, but it’s better than before so you let it slide.

“Good stuff. Do you want anything?” You ask. You commit their orders of tea and coffee to memory as you walk to the door. “And thanks for coming.” You leave the room as you say that, closing the door softly.

The walk to the lobby is a quick one. Thankfully, it has a little canteen with breakfast foods available. You grab some familiar-looking pastries as well as some chocolate croissants that should be a decent breakfast. With that sorted, you move onto the drinks. Unfortunately, between the pastries, your coffee, Yuzu’s tea and Layla and Rosehip’s order you find your hands too full.

“You need a hand?” A familiar voice asks. You turn and see Koume, standing at the entrance to the canteen.

“Koume!” You say, smiling. “You’re a sight for sore eyes.”

“I’m sure.” She replies. She walks over and takes the tray of drinks from your hand. “Shall we go see Erika?”

“Let’s.” You reply. The two of you walk back to the room, making small talk as you go. Maho also wanted to come but apparently her responsibilities precluded her from coming.

You re-enter the room and carefully distribute the breakfast foods and drinks. As you do, a nurse comes in to examine Erika. Once she’s done, the nurse turns to you.

“She’ll be alright with a couple of days of rest but keep her from any tanks until then.”

“Hey!” Erika protests.

“I’ll keep her from them.” You promise. With that, the nurse leaves saying you’re free to leave the hospital whenever you’re ready.

> Let the girls sit and chat for a bit

The nurse didn’t say you have to leave anytime soon, so you decide against rushing anyone. Instead, you take a seat next to Yuzu and relax as the others crowd Erika. You text the Student Council that you’ll need pick up in a bit and Anzu replies that they have a helicopter ready to leave as soon as you give the word. With that sorted, you recline in your chair, sip at your coffee and break into one of the croissants.

You do nothing, simply listening in as the girls fuss over Erika. You can tell Erika appreciates the thought though she’s trying hard to hide it behind boasting and exaggerating the story slightly. You simply chuckle at that but don’t interrupt.

“Fritz?” A sleepy voice next to you asks. You look to your left and see Yuzu blinking the sleep out of her eyes. “How’s Erika?”

“Well, and boasting about her injury.” You reply. Yuzu giggles and sits up. You hand her the tea and a pastry and the two of you eat in silence, listening to Erika’s conversation with Rosehip, Layla and Koume. Eventually, Erika gets bored with sitting around.

“Fritz!” She calls. “Let’s go! I’m getting bored!”

“I don’t know.” You reply. “If you’re here then you’re not out making Chi-Ha-Tan look smart.”

“Hey! My charge worked!” She huffs. It doesn’t stop the others in the room from laughing. Erika huffs again and grabs the bag of her clothes that Yuzu brought then stomps into the bathroom. She emerges a few minutes later, adjusting her skirt.

“Alright! Let’s skip this joint!” Erika exclaims. You let the President know that you’re done and she replies instantly telling you Ōoarai’s helicopter is on the way.

“You girls need a lift?” You ask.

“Kay lent us a helicopter, so me n’ Rosie are good,” Layla replies.

“I could use one,” Koume says.

“Sure.” You reply standing. Yuzu follows suit, climbing out of bed and slipping her shoes on. You say goodbye to Rosehip and Layla and the four of you head up to the helipad. Sure enough, when you arrive one of Ōoarai’s Hueys is sitting there, waiting for you.

“We’ll drop you home first.” You say to Koume as you hop on board.

“Why not come over for a little bit? I’m sure Instructor Nishizumi would be fine with it and Maho would too.” Koume suggests.

> Stay on Black Forest’s carrier, go find Maho.

You look at Yuzu who just shrugs. You turn back to Koume.

“Sure, let’s go.” You say before clambering over to the pilots, two of the aviation club members. “Can we go to the Black Forest Carrier first!?” You shout.

“Longer we’re out the longer we’re out of lessons!” One replies back to you. You take that as an affirmative and sit back as the helicopter pulls away from the hospital. A few moments later, you’re headed towards the Black Forest schoolship.

It doesn’t take long to get there. The pilots set down the Huey on one of Black Forest’s helipads at the front of the carrier. The four of you climb out the helicopter while the pilots switch on the speakers and kickback, no doubt enjoying having a Friday off school.

You begin walking towards the city, and it’s not long before you run into some familiar faces. Erika and Maho arrive in a Krupp-Protze. It comes to a stop and Maho steps out as it stops.

“Fritz, Erika. Have you reconsidered Mother’s offer?” She asks as she walks over.

“We even brought a prisoner as a peace offering.” You nod, pointing to Yuzu. She smiles and rolls her eyes. Maho makes a beeline straight for Erika, then bends over slightly to look her over.

“Maho?” Erika asks confused. Maho ignores her and continues her inspection. Eventually satisfied Maho stands back up and pats Erika’s head.

“Mother had a lot to say about your tactics in that last due.” She says.

“Good things?” Erika asks.

“A lot of things,” Maho replies not really clarifying. “Would you care to come with us? Mother will probably make time to talk to you.”

Erika looks to you. You, in turn, look to Yuzu who gestures to her wrist.

> You’re already here, why not go see Instructor Nishizumi

“Sure, we will.” You reply. “Lead the way.” Maho gestures to the Krupp-Protze and the four of you climb in. You say hello to Erika who’s driving and she grumbles one back, obviously annoyed at something though, for the life of you, you have no idea what. Once all of you are in, the truck rumbles to a start and turns around, headed towards Black Forest proper.

The first thing that strikes you is how big the schoolship is. Black Forest is far bigger than Ōoarai, and it shows in how far you have to travel to get from the front of the ship to the bridge, far more than you’d have had to on Ōoarai. The city is also much bigger, feeling much more alive given the hustle and bustle. Black Forest also seems to have its own industrial area.

“Say Maho, what do those factories make?” You ask gesturing to the industrial area.

“Hmm? Goods for sale like any other factory, generally heavy metal works. They also make some of the stuff we use for our tanks.” She says.

“That’s interesting.” Yuzu murmurs. You turn to her but she’s in deep thought. You decide against disturbing her and look back to the front of the truck. Minutes later, you arrive at the bridge.

“I think I’ll make my exit here,” Koume says as you step off the truck.

“Why?” Erika asks.

“I’ve already missed half a day of school.” She explains though she doesn’t quite meet Erika’s eyes while she says it.

“You’re scared of Instructor Nishizumi?” You guess.

“No!” She immediately denies it but you’ve known her long enough to see through it.

“Come on then Akaboshi.” Big Erika replies, rolling her eyes. “I’ll give you a lift.”

After giving a brief hug to yourself and Erika’ Koume hops into the Krupp-Protze and the two of them head off.

That leaves yourself, your sister, Yuzu and Maho to head up to see Shiho. The four of you take the elevator to the top floor of the bridge and you find yourself outside her office.

Maho knocks on the door.

“Mother, it’s me and the Hermanns!” She shouts. You get no reply for a solid minute before she shouts back.

“Enter.” Maho opens the door and the four of you walk in.

“Commander Hermann.” She says the minute you walk in. “Miss Koyama. Erika Hermann.” You take a moment to look around. It’s a very spartan office. Wooden floors and walls, as well as a commanding view from the window behind Instructor Nishizumi. The only real decoration you can see is the painting of the Mark IV hanging to your left.

“Instructor Nishizumi…

> “You heard about our treasure hunt?”

“I have.” She confirms. “I doubt you’ll find anything of value, my mother and I combed Mount Fuji before for the very same missing shipment.”

“So, if we find anything?” You ask.

“Then do with it what you wish.” She shrugs. “Consider it a gift to a favoured student if you manage to find anything worth keeping.”

“I will, thank you, Instructor.” She waves off your thanks before focusing on Erika.

“And you.”

“And me.” Erika echoes. “What about me?”

“I watched your duel yesterday.”

“And so did half of Japan, what of it?” You look at Erika, she’s being unusually combative. You idly wonder if she hit her head too hard. Maho likely thinks similar given the look she’s giving Erika. It’s a mix of ‘what are you doing?’ and ‘Stop before you get murdered’ as far as you can tell.

“It was a very interesting performance.” Shiho continues.

“And what of it?” Erika asks again. “I won did I not?” Shiho makes to talk but Erika interrupts her. “In fact, I’d go so far as to say that I demonstrated the Nishizumi style perfectly!”

“Sorry Instructor, she hit her-“ You move to cut Erika off but she moves out of reach and continues.

“I hit most of my shots, my defences were Iron enough to survive a ram and I didn’t retreat once. Pretty much perfect eh?” Erika waggles her eyebrows as she talks. You look to Instructor Nishizumi, who’s as stone-faced as ever.

“Snrk.” An alien sound rings through the room. You look at Shiho again and see that she’s smiling. You blink a couple of time to be sure you’re not imagining things and sure enough, it’s still there when you’re done.

Instructor Nishizumi stands and walks over to Erika. You see Maho do a double-take when Shiho pats her head. It’s only once, and far more stilted than any other headpat you’d seen but it was still a headpat.

“I suppose you’re right young Commander Hermann.” She says. She then walks past yourself, still stunned and a thoroughly confused Yuzu. “I have a school to run. Maho will show you out when you’re done here.” Instructor Nishizumi leaves. It’s followed shortly by Maho collapsing onto a sofa.

> Collapse alongside Maho

You try to process what just happened. Instructor Nishizumi was nice to someone, motherly even at a stretch, stilted though it may have been. Your brain can’t take it, and your legs can’t handle it. You decide the most sensible course of action is to collapse alongside Maho. She doesn’t look surprised, nodding to you as you do.

“Is it really that shocking?” Erika asks.

“Yes.” Maho immediately answers. “Perhaps in her old age mother is getting soft?” She mumbles to herself, barely loud enough for you to hear.

“She’s not old enough for that.” You idly reply. Maho nods and sighs.

“Unfortunately.” She says.

>“I thought I was Commander Hermann.”

You say still slightly hysterically.

“You are,” Maho reassures you. “It’s a mark of respect, for her to call Erika Commander as she already does you.”

“So, I haven’t been replaced?” You ask.

“You haven’t,” Maho confirms.

“Are you alright?” Yuzu asks still very confused as she takes a seat next to you. “Is it that big a deal?”

“Yes.” Maho and yourself reply at the same time. Erika harrumphs in pride as you say that.

“Damn straight.” She says thumping her chest. Yuzu still looks dreadfully confused.

After yourself and Maho recover, the four of you head back to the helicopter. You’d have preferred to stay slightly longer, but Yuzu got pretty insistent and to be fair, you’ve been missing for half the day.

Maho, Big Erika and Koume are there to wave you off. You get a hug from Maho and Koume as well a very reluctant one from Big Erika as well as a reminder you promised to duel her again. With that, you lift off and head back to Ōoarai.

You set down at the landing pad by the warehouse. You can see your team, streaming out as they finish morning practice. The second the helicopter touches down, Erika leaps out of the helicopter, sprinting towards the others. You and Yuzu get out slightly more sedately. As you do Anzu and Momo walk up to you.

“Nice day isn’t it Fritz?” Anzu asks. “Or should I say evening?”

“Oh really?” Anzu asks, raising an eyebrow. “Kawashima, did we have anything like that scheduled with Black Forest?”

“No President,” Momo replies.

“I said, did we have anything like that scheduled with Black Forest?” Anzu repeats, stressing the question. Momo puts two and two together, before quickly scribbling something in her file.

“Ah yes, it’s right here. Thank you for taking care of it for us Vice-President, Commander Hermann.” She says.

“Uh, you’re welcome?” You reply.

“No, you are,” Anzu smirks. “I can do a lot Fritz but try not to push it too much okay?”

“Sure, thing Anzu.” You confirm.

“Good to hear.” She smiles. “Koyama, let’s go.”

“Right Prez!” Yuzu leans up to give you a kiss on the cheek then follows the President. You hear retching from your left. You look over and see your crew making the noises at you. All of them, including Axel who usually doesn’t speak.

You give them all a one-fingered salute.

“Hey! You!” You turn and see Sodoko marching over again. “That gesture was against regulations!” You hear a round of laughter from your crew again. You glare at them, but it has no effect even though it would usually cow them.

“I’ll get you!” You warn them. Their continued laughs suggest they’ve thought it worth whatever you put them through.

“Ahem!” You turn and see Sodoko tapping her foot impatiently. “Got anything to say for yourself?”

You make sure to glare at your crew to let them know exactly the hell they’re in for when you’re done. It finally gets through to them you’re not playing around and the four of them promptly make themselves scarce. Unfortunately, that still leaves you with a four foot nine problem.

“Ahem?” She asks staring at you pointedly.

> ”Sorry, it’s been a long, stressful two days. I apologize.”

You say. “It just slipped out, my bad.”

“Hmm…” She hums, looking you up and down. Eventually, instead of the chewing out you were expecting she slams her little notebook shut and turns around.

“Don’t let me catch you making such obscene gestures again!” She says as she walks off.

“You’re not going to clock me?” You ask, confused.

“Do you want me too?” She counters.

“No.” You reply hastily. “I just wanted to know why.”

“It was a long and stressful few days.” She shrugs. “And I’m not unreasonable.”

“Ah, thanks Midoriko.” You say. She waves you off and walks away towards the rest of the Public Morals Committee.

> All tanks gain 10 XP due to Miho

As Sodoko leaves, you scan the crowd for Erika. You see her by the rest of the Sensha-Dō club, dramatically retelling the story of her duel. Somehow she’s reclaimed her sword again and is waving it around to punctuate her story. You walk over to her.

“…and then, I levelled my sword at Anchovy and order my driver to- ah!” You interrupt her by plucking the sword out of her hand then slinging her your shoulder.

“Put me down!” She demands “I’m telling my story!”

“Too bad.” You grumble before turning to everyone else. “Erika needs her rest, doctor’s orders.”

“It’s probably best if you go then.” Miho smiles.

“Hurry up and get some rest!” Saori shouts. The rest of the club voices their agreement.

“Noooo,” Erika moans still struggling against your shoulder. Boxer she may be, she’s not strong enough to break out. She eventually stops struggling and by the time you get home, she’s asleep on your shoulder.

You put her on the bed, pull off her shoes and tuck her in.

“G’night Erika.” You say as you walk out of the room to make some dinner.

Saturday 21st June (Day 105)

You wake up early that morning. Usually, you’d sleep in on the weekend but today you have a busy schedule. You quickly fry some eggs and bacon and after setting some aside for Erika, you make your own plate.

Before you leave you check on Erika. She’s still fast asleep, snoring away. You leave a note explaining you’ll be with the automotive club this morning then Maho in the afternoon. With that done, you head to the Warehouses.

> Ask Maho if she’s free to go looking for that shipment

As you arrive, you see the new aviation club as well as Erwin and Saori going about maintenance for the helicopters. You also see some new pilots who’ve recently joined the automotive club, making use of the new training facilities that the tankery club generously funded. You text Maho, asking if she’ll be free to check out the shipment today. She immediately replies yes, with a time later in the suggested. You confirm that then walk over to the helicopter hangar.

“Hey Fritz!” Saori chirps as you walk over. “How’s it going!?”

“It’s good.” You reply. “We got another search today, could you make sure the helicopters are fitted?”

“Sure I can.” She replies. “A treasure hunt sounds like fun!”

“Tell that to the people slogging it on the ground.” You reply. Saori giggles then walks off to make sure the helicopters will be ready on time.

> Help the automotive club prepare the third Sherman

You walk past the helicopter hangar and into the tankery warehouses. As expected, Leopon team are there, hard at work. This time, however, they’re working on their car.

“Hey Commander!” Nakajima shouts from under the car as you walk over. “What’s up!?”

“We got a whizzbang and I want to get it fitted.” You reply. Nakajima rolls out from under the car and nods sagely.

“Yup, the rockets. Should be an easy fit.” She says. “Shall we get started?”

“Lets.” You nod. They roll their car out of the way and you manoeuvre the Sherman into the engineering block. The standard tank work is easy given its stuff the automotive club and yourself have done hundreds of times. The rockets are slightly more difficult, however.

Rolled 1 – Success

It’s more difficult in the way that 1 is more than 0. Between the automotive club’s experience with repairing tanks and exotic modifications and your own experience working on Werewolf, it’s child’s play to fit the launcher. After an hour of work, it’s fitted and wired up. You take a seat next to Suzuki who hands you a water bottle.

“That was far quicker than I expected it to be!” She muses.

“How long did you expected it to take?” You ask

“At least a couple more hours – usually wiring in new toys is so finicky, but it went really well today for some reason!” She explains. You spend another twenty minutes just chilling with the automotive club as they discuss potentially fitting rockets to their tank. You don’t have the heart to tell them that would be illegal. After Leopon’s rocket brainstorm, you say goodbye to them then head out back to the helicopter hangar. Both helicopters are there, kitted out and ready to go. One has the SAR kit and the other Cargo given those are the only two that you have. Your crew is also there. You make sure to give them the stinkeye but otherwise don’t ruin the mood. Everyone seems to be excited to go on a treasure hunt.

“Wait!” You turn and see Erika sprinting into the hangar. “I want to come too! You said I could!”

“You took a pretty nasty hit yesterday.” Ruby says frowning.

“Aye, ye don’t want te aggravate anythin’ slogging thru the mountain,” Max adds.

“Fritz?” Erika turns to you; she’s pouting and giving you the doe eyes. “Please?”

> “You stay in the helicopter and look from there.”

She continues giving you the doe eyes, but you hold firm. Eventually, she gives in.

“Alright, I’ll stay in the helicopter, sheesh.” She sighs. “Let’s get going.” You climb into the first helicopter, your crew and Erika following shortly after.

“All aboard!?” Saori asks.

“Sure are!” You shout back.

“Then let’s go!” She flicks a couple of switches, then the helicopter slowly takes off. Behind you, the second Huey takes off after you.

It’s a long journey to Mount Fuji. You relax, strapped into the helicopter as Erika boasts once again about how epic her duel was. You consider stopping her but if anyone is equipped to handle Erika then it’s your crew. They were also there, meaning they’re able to take some of the wind out of her sails. Thankfully, she doesn’t have the sword with her this time which would be dangerous given you’re five thousand feet up. Eventually, you arrive at Mount Fuji. Black Forest is already there, as can be seen by the massive Zeppelin they brought.

“Set us down next to that Zeppelin!” You shout to the pilots.

“You got it Mackensen!” Erwin replies. Her and Saori manoeuvre the helicopter close to the Zeppelin and put down the helicopter. You open the door and yourself, your crew and Erika file out. Maho is standing there with Erika, looking over a map.

“Fritz, Erika.” Maho smiles at the two of you as you approach. “It’s good to see you again.”

“And you Maho, Erika.” You nod to the platinum blonde who nods back. “What’s the deal?” You ask, pointing to the map.

“A bad one,” Maho replies. “We have a lot of ground to cover and no way to narrow it down from here. I’ve brought two ground teams with me, but if we use them too early then we risk tiring them out. How do you think we should use our air assets? We can either have them all searching from the beginning and risk being unable to have a second go, or we only use one of your helicopters and save the other for when we have a lead.”

“I think we deploy them all Maho, more eyes looking means a greater chance of finding something.” You say.

“You think?” She asks.

“We did a search like this before in Ibaraki.” You explain. “Having someone double checking each area turned out to be pretty useful.”

“I see, I’ll defer to your judgement then.” She says. “Shall we put a team on each helicopter? See where we go from there?”

“Sounds fine to me Maho.” You nod. Axel copies down the plan onto your copy of the map.

“That’s all then Fritz.” She says, rolling up her map. “Stay in contact.”

“That won’t be any trouble.” You reply as you make your way back to the helicopter. Yourself, your crew and your sister remount the helicopter. Erika and a team from Black Forest mount Ōoarai’s other helicopter, and Maho returns to the Zeppelin. You lift off slowly to begin your search. You idly watch through the window as the other helicopter and the Zeppelin also take off.

You spend the time looking out of the window, but you see nothing. You suppose that’s also a good sign given you can see pretty well for four of the five sections you go through, but for one the tree coverage is enough to completely block any view yourself or your crew had into the area. At least due to there being nothing of interest in the preceding sections you can (probably) safely rule out anything is in that one. However, while your search is unsuccessful, the other groups’ are not.

“Fritz!” Saori calls. “Black Forest’s Zeppelin can see a chimney!”

“A chimney?” You reply. “Like from a house?”

“No, it just comes out the ground!” Saori says.

“Almost as if for a secret underground bunker!” Erika speculates.

“Helicopter 2 can see it too!” Saori calls again. “Maho is asking for advice on how to proceed.”

“Tell Maho to let Helicopter two put its ground team down and investigate it but otherwise to stick to the search pattern.” You say. Saori relays the suggestion to Maho.

“She’s following your advice, Ground Team Itsumi is checking it out now,” Saori advises you.

“Alright, let’s continue our search then.” You say. The helicopter turns east, then heads north. Initially, you have some success, easily able to see the ground. Unfortunately, for most of your journey, you have no indication of whether there’s just nothing to be found or you’re unable to see anything.

“Fritz! This is boring!” Erika complains. You ignore her with practised ease and continue to keep an eye out.

“Fritz, this is Zeppelin Nishizumi.” You hear over the intercom. You look to Saori and it seems she’s patched you into the wider radio system. “We have spotted something out of place while on our search – rows of old model barbed wire.”

“Helicopter 1, this is Ground Team Itsumi.” You hear Erika speak. “The chimney leads underground and originates from the north-west. We are unable to ascertain any more than that.”

“There’s nothing here.” Erika says flatly.

“Yup, I can’t see anything either.” Ruby chimes in. You scan the area again then sigh.

“Yeah, you’re right.” You say. “Erwin, take us to where the action is please.”

“On it Mackensen.” She confirms. The helicopter banks right and you’re soon headed south towards the other teams. As you do, reports from the other teams crackle in.

“This is ground team Itsumi.” Big Erika reports in. “We’ve searched the area and have found a hatch. It appears to be sealed shut.”

“Fritz.” Erika tugs your shirt, but you ignore her for now, focused on the ground team.

“Maho, what about you?” You ask. The radio crackles with static for a moment before she responds.

“Fritz.”

“Ground team Nishizumi here. We found a minefield.” She says.

“A minefield!? Maho, are you-“

“We’re fine.” She interrupts. “We have retreated safely.”

“That’s goo- oof!” You’re interrupted by Erika’s elbow in your gut. You glare at her. “What?”

She points out the window.

> “No explosives please.” Risk damage to the helicopter.

“You’re not in charge of me.” Erika shoots back.

“Do you think Maho would say any different?” You ask. Erika’s silent for a moment then you hear a sigh.

“Alright, but I’m not liable for any damage to your helicopter.” She grumbles.

“Fine by me.” You confirm. You take off the headset, then leap out of the helicopter. Maho, her team and your crew are already at the door.

“It’s a big thing huh?” Leo muses as he observes it. You can’t help but agree. You don’t think you could open it between the ten of you present. Thankfully, Maho has the key. She pulls out an A4 piece of paper and begins punching numbers into a keypad you hadn’t seen before. She punches in numbers for a solid minute before pressing enter. Black Forest takes its security seriously apparently.

The door opens with a groan, somehow still working after god-knows how many years of disservice. You look down the hallway and it’s dark, Ruby hands you a flashlight and you peer down the hall. It goes quite far.

“Ladies first?” You offer.

“I believe the saying is finished Men just before.” Maho offers drily. You sigh and take a step in, your crew and the Black Forest team following after you.

You follow the hallway for a good five minutes until it finally widens. The space you enter is far more open, definitely big enough to fit a tank, perhaps even a platoon at a fit.

“Fritz! Look!” Your sister calls. You point the flashlight where she pointed and almost drop it. Several Panzer IVs, a VK 36 experimental heavy tank, and a VK 30 experimental heavy tank. Quite the haul, but that’s not what gets your attention. What gets it is the absolutely battered Tiger sitting next to them, gun pointed straight at you. 732. Your grandfather’s tank.

“This is Itsumi.” Your radio crackles. “I’ve found…

Pick 1
> …a Cromwell and a Challenger Tank Destroyer.”
> …Several Churchill Black Princes.”
> …a Firefly and a couple of Sherman hulls.”

There’s also the problem of what you found. Technically, all the German tanks belong to Black Forest. Instructor Nishizumi did say you could ‘do with it what you wish’ though…
> You’re only here for your grandfather’s tank. Take that and the British tanks.
> Lean on Maho’s crush for you a little bit and try and take something else (what)

> …a Cromwell and a Challenger Tank Destroyer.”

“I see, thank you Erika,” Maho says before she turns off her radio. “Well, Fritz?”

“I’m only here for him.” You say gesturing to the Tiger. “I know that the shipment belongs to Black Forest, but-“

“Don’t worry about it, Fritz.” Maho interrupts gently. “Mother would understand and so do I. Besides, all the other tanks recovered will be invaluable, I can see these supporting our second division team well.”

“Thank you then, Maho.” You say gratefully. Maho smiles back.

“Think nothing of it.”

You move forward to inspect the tanks. There are quite a few and though they could fit single file down the hallway you came through, you have no idea how to get them out. Luckily, Maho answers that question.

“Mauko, please ask the Zeppelin team to deploy the extraction vehicle,” Maho says.

“Yes, Commander Nishizumi!” A girl breaks from the group and sprints towards the entrance.”

“Extraction vehicle?” You ask. Maho shakes her head.

“Just wait and see.” Sure enough, twenty minutes later, a Bergepanzer Tiger(P) rumbles down the hall. It’s very loud, amplified by the enclosed space. You watch as the crew climbs out of the tank and slowly hooks one of the Panzer IVs up and drags it out. They carefully move the remaining tanks. You watch with bated breath as they hook up your Grandfather’s Tiger to the Bergepanzer. It seems to resist at first, but eventually, the Bergepanzer is able to move its massive weight and slowly drag it out of the facility.

When you get outside, all of the tanks are lined up, including the two British tanks you found.

“We only have enough transport capacity to move them all to Black Forest,” Maho explains as she stands next to you. “We shall deliver them to you tomorrow.”

“Sounds good to me Maho.” You reply. “Today was fun wasn’t it?”

“It was certainly an experience.” She replies, not answering your question at all. You see Ōoarai’s two helicopters landing on the other side of the clearing you’re in. “I’ll see you then Fritz.”

> “Actually, are you free this evening?” Shiho did say to get Maho to stop being all work and no play…

Maho pauses.

“I am, yes. What of it?”

“Do you want to go to dinner somewhere nice? Ōoarai’s close too, so we could bring Miho too.”

“Anyone else?” Maho asks.

“Up to you, the Erikas? And maybe Koume,” you suggest. She considers it for a moment before nodding.

“Bring Koyama too,” she says. “At seven maybe?”

“Seven should be fine,” you confirm. “See you this evening.”

“See you then Fritz,” Maho confirms. She walks off towards her Zeppelin and you do the same towards your helicopters. Your crew and Erika are there, celebrating the find with the helicopter crews.

“Fritz!” Saori calls as you get closer. “The President said good job!”

“You told her?”

“She wanted to know why she couldn’t use a helicopter to get from her office to the warehouses,” Saori explains. “So, I let her know.”

“Well then, let’s head back so she can have her taxi back?” That gets a laugh from the aviation club members who turn back to their helicopter. You mount up as well, followed shortly by Erika and your crew.

“So, a new tank huh Fritz?” Erika asks.

“A new tank,” you confirm. “Plus, two for Ōoarai.”

“That’s a lot of tanks, I wonder if the automotive club will be able to keep up,” Ruby muses. You can’t help but share her sentiments.

You arrive back at Ōoarai about twenty minutes later. You and your crew pile out of the helicopter. As you do, you quickly text Miho and Yuzu about Maho’s very late birthday dinner. They both reply an affirmative though Miho follows it with an exasperated comment about Maho having ignored her birthday before.

You put your phone away and turn to Erika.

“You feel like coming to Maho’s birthday dinner?” Erika looks at you quizzically.

“It’s her birthday and she didn’t say anything?”

“It was her birthday almost a month ago and she didn’t say anything,” you reply. Erika’s eyes widen in horror.

“Of course I’ll come! To forget your own birthday…” Erika trails off, a haunted look on her face.

“Be ready for six,” you say, interrupting her existential crisis on Maho’s behalf.

As you walk, you run through a mental checklist of what you need to do beforehand. Clothes are easy, you can just dress smart-casual and the others are sorting themselves. What isn’t sorted is the cake and the restaurant…

You decide to leave the restaurant selection to Miho given she knows Maho far better than you. As you walk to the cake shop, you text her and she sends back a swanky looking burger place. You forward the address to Koume who sends back a lot of emojis. You’re pretty sure that’s a confirmation they’ll be there.

You walk into Cakes und Panzer to try find a cake. Two immediately jump out at you, the Black Forest gateau and a choose-a-tank based cake. The gateau is tempting, but on a whim, you ask the lady behind the counter a question.

“I don’t suppose you do a Tiger shaped cake?”

“If you give us twenty minutes we will,” she replies.

“Deal.” You slap down some yen on the table. The lady rings you up and disappears into the kitchen. Sure enough, twenty minutes later she returns with a Tiger shaped cake. You take it and return home.

You quickly get changed into a nice pair of jeans and a shirt. Erika is also simply dressed in a nice sweater and a skirt. You leave for the disembarkation point where Miho and Yuzu are waiting. Yuzu is wearing the same sweater she wore on your first date and Miho a white dress.

“Hi Fritz,” Miho says as you approach. “I heard you found more tanks?”

“Sure did,” you confirm as you give squeeze Yuzu’s hand. “Shall we head out?”

The four of you walk off the ship, and into port. You talk as you walk, you discuss the new tanks with Miho.

“So, what do you think of them Commander?” You ask her.

“I think if we can get them working in time, then they’ll be a real boon,” she replies. “I just hope we don’t overwork the automotive club.”

“Agreed.” You nod. “The four of them have been putting in a herculean effort to keep all our tanks working.”

The four of you finally reach the place, Tinsletown. Based on Hollywood apparently. You see Maho, Koume and Erika seated on a table at the back.

“You guys go ahead; I just need to hand this to someone.” You heft the cake for emphasis. The girls understand and head towards the others. You quickly find a member of the waitstaff and explain what’s happening. He takes the cake from you and heads to the kitchen. You go in the opposite direction and head to the table.

“Something keep you, Fritz?” Maho asks with a teasing smile.

“Nothing, just had to do a small errand,” you reply as you take a seat. You’re opposite Koume who smiles and squeezes your hand when you sit down.”

“Well, will you indulge me as to what the occasion is?” Maho asks. You hum and check the menu.

> “Just a small get together.” Keep it a surprise till the cake appears

“Really?” Maho asks. She doesn’t seem entirely convinced, but given she has no reason to suspect anything else she relents on the questioning. “Well, it is well-timed. Preparations for the second stage of the duelling league and the tournament finals have been weighing heavily on us.”

“Both of which we’re going to win,” Big Erika interjects glaring at you. You stare back.

“We’ll see, won’t we?” You reply.

“We’ve been preparing,” Erika warns.

“And we’ve been getting better,” you snap back. Your bantering is interrupted by a waiter arriving to take your order. You order a Cajun Beef Burger and everyone else also orders burgers, though Miho and Little Erika get chicken.

“So, you mentioned the second stage of the league?” You ask. “What does that entail?”

“You’ll be up against the other teams that made it through!” Koume explains. “Pravda and Jatkosota!”

“Jatkosota made it through?” Your sister asks. “How did they do that which such crummy tanks!?”

“Jatkosota is a very tricky opponent,” Miho warns.

“Hmm, we had a practice match against them a year ago, they were very creative with their use of tanks,” Maho adds. Koume has a thousand-yard stare on her face.

“Are you alright Koume?” You ask.

“Jatkosota is the match Akaboshi made the first team in.” Big Erika explains. “It was… an experience.”

“The polkka…” Koume shivers. You have no idea what that means. Your examination of Koume’s mental state is interrupted by the arrival of the food. That seems to break her out of the trance she was in. You file that away for later.

You receive your burger as does everyone else. It’s pretty good. You’ve not had American food before outside of McDonald's, but if this burger is anything to go on then it’s something to explore. You finish eating, a few minutes later so do your companions.

“Good pick Miho!” Your sister cheers.

“Thanks!” Miho replies. The conversation continues for a minute before happy birthday music begins to play.

“Having your Birthday in such a public place, I could never do such a thing,” Maho muses.

> Say nothing and sport a massive shit-eating grin

You sit back and say nothing about what’s happening. Maho does not catch the grin, instead watching the cake as it’s brought out.

“Look at that, it’s shaped like a Tiger. Perhaps they’re a fan of Sensha-Dō?” Maho asks conversationally. Your sister is biting her tongue to keep from laughing and it seems Koume has clocked what’s happening as she immediately starts recording.

“Perhaps we should say hello? They might appreciate some pictures with you Commander,” Erika offers. Even Miho can’t help but giggle at that. Then the cake turns towards your table.

“Huh?” Maho asks, very intelligently, as it’s put down in front of her. The restaurant found candles somewhere, not seventeen but enough. Maho’s eyes go wide and she’s as red as a tomato. “It’s a Tiger.” She says lamely before she looks up at you. “You did this.”

“I did.” You confirm.

“My birthday was twenty days ago.”

“And you didn’t celebrate it!” Miho accuses. Maho relents at that and blows at the candles to cheers across the restaurant. She’s handed a knife and though she butchers the first slice, Miho is on hand to save the rest of the cake. It tastes good, but not as good as the expression on Maho’s face when she realised the cake was for her.

Once you’ve eaten, the remains are boxed and distributed amongst the attendees. The slice of the engine you get is big enough to feed you all day tomorrow. You make a note to stop Erika from attempting that.

As you walk, Maho matches your stride.

“It’s been a while since I had such a nice night out.”

“I’m glad you enjoyed it,” you reply honestly. “You shouldn’t work yourself so hard.”

“It’s working hard that’ll allow us to win the tournament, I hear there’s a powerhouse team in the finals I’ll have to face once I’ve beaten St. Gloriana.” You can see the grin creeping onto her face. She’s teasing you.

> “We’re no powerhouse, we just have GUTS.”

“Guts you say?” Maho echoes, thoroughly amused. “I think that describes Ōoarai pretty well, though I think I’d use the word indomitable.”

“Well we are unbeaten,” you nod. “That’s pretty indomitable.”

“Not for long!” Big Erika interrupts, “You watch in the league, I’ll show you who’s boss!”

“I thought I was undefeated against Black Forest?” You ask your sister in mock confusion.

“Maybe you’re going crazy.” She suggests sagely. You can see that Big Erika is about to blow but Koume gets there first.

“It was a lovely evening, thank you for inviting us.” Koume smiles sweetly. She not so sweetly elbows Big Erika in the ribs.

“Ow- uh, yeah. Good job Hermanns, Miho.” She forces out.

“Tsundere!” Your sister clicks her fingers and points at Big Erika. She looks about ready to throw hands again but likely remembering last time she grunts and looks you in the eyes.

“We settle this on the battlefield.”

“Fine by me,” you say with a pleasant smile. Maho decides to intervene and after giving everyone goodbye hugs, the Black Forest contingent departs. You even managed to get Big Erika to give you one. With that done, you head back to the carrier.

Sunday 22nd June (Day 106)

You’re up early that morning. Maho said that the tanks you found would be delivered today and if the text from Koume saying ‘Hope you enjoy your new toys <3’ is anything to go by, they’re already here. You’re torn on whether to wake up Erika or not, but you decide against it given her recent injury.

You double-time it to the warehouses and sure enough, there they stand. The automotive club is looking over the Challenger but Panzer 732 sits there, battered and proud as ever.

> Do an inspection yourself of the tank

You decide not to bother the automotive club given how busy they always seem to be. You start your inspection simply by walking around the tank. It’s battered everywhere apart from the back. The entire front and sides of the tank are perforated with chips and gouges. Curiously, there doesn’t seem to be a single penetrating hit anywhere.

Hello Panzer 732,” you say in German as you continue your walk around. “I’m Commander Fritz Hermann, grandson of Jonathan Hermann, it’s a pleasure to meet you.” As expected, you get no verbal response. You decide to check inside the tank, your hopes are not high given the poor state of the outside, but you climb atop the Tiger and pull open one of the hatches. You lower yourself into the tank expecting the worst.

It’s fine. You look around the turret and everything seems to be in order. Aside from the usual tank mess you can see scattered about the turret looks factory new. You look through the gunner’s sight and text the hand crank and while it could use a bit of oil it still works fine. You slip down, into the hull and it’s similarly orderly. The loader racks are empty but clean and the driver and radio operator stations also seem to be in perfect condition. Very odd for a tank that’s been missing for over seventy years.

You pull yourself back into the Commander’s seat and find yourself face to face with a picture. You gently pull it off where its stuck on the cupola and you’re surprised to recognise your grandmother. A very old picture albeit a face you recognise from similar ones in the family albums.

> Rolled 2 – Hidden DC 5 – ‘Only the worthy’ passed

You touch your hand to the turret, running it along the old metal. Despite likely being the most experienced person regarding living tanks, you have no idea how to go about forcing an appearance from a machine spirit. Despite that, you do not have to wait long.

Pride.

That’s what strikes you first. You would call it arrogance but given how experienced you know the tank to be, you don’t think it’s that at all. You feel the age next; the sheer wealth of experience and knowledge almost forces you to your knees. You’re not able to make sense of all of it, or any of it really but you do catch glimpses of the tank’s storied past. Facing down a platoon of T-34s with no support but the infantry; an encounter with a SU-152 that explains one of the larger pockmarks on the front of the turret; a desperate duel with a Pershing and a support mission for Tiger IIs during the Ardennes offensive. There are more, but those are the only ones you’re really able to discern.

A presence in the back of your head. A name. FREDERICK THE GREAT. You slump against the turret and take a moment to breathe. That was far more intense than talking to Werewolf. You’re not sure if that’s because Yukari was there or Werewolf is younger than your grandfather’s tank, or Frederick apparently.

I’m Fritz Hermann, grandson of Jonathan Hermann” You say again. You see flashes of your grandfather and other unfamiliar figures who must be the other members of the crew. You also feel disdain, tempered slightly by your relation to your grandfather.

Let's park Freddie next to Werewolf and find out:
If their guns are pointing at each other in the morning they either hit it off or hate each other.

> “I’m not my grandfather, but my crew is just as good.”

Idle curiosity, dismissal. He’s interested to see if you are but not hopeful.

“You can count on it,” you finish. You thump a hand against the cool metal and then climb out of the tank.

“Sup Commander?” Hoshino asks as you climb out of the tank. “You have fun in there?”

“Sure did,” you reply. “Tank’s a real good conversationalist.”

“I’m sure,” she laughs. “You got a minute to talk ‘bout your new finds?”

“Sure do.” You climb off the Tiger and walk over to where she’s standing in front of the two British tanks. “Alright, what’s up?”

“Well the good news is that all these tanks are in pretty good condition, if I didn’t know better I’d say they came straight from the factory.”

“Including the Tiger?”

“Including the Tiger, somehow,” she shakes her head and sighs. “I don’t know how with that battle damage but everything inside is in perfect working order.”

“Well that pretty good, what’s the bad news?”

“The bad news is that that brings our total tanks over twenty and there’s only four of us in the automotive club.”

“The Bergepanther and the engineering block don’t help?”

“They do,” she reassures you “It’s just we can’t throw money at a manpower problem; two of us minimum need to work on a tank so that limits us to two at a time. With repairs and the duelling league, I don’t know if we can keep up.”

> “Would some professional help, help?”

“Unfortunately,” Hoshino grumbles. “I don’t like the idea of anyone touching my tanks but us, but given the frequency of fights this much we’ll need it to keep everything running for the finals. I bet the bastards do it on purpose to help the teams with bigger tank arsenals.” She pauses. “Our arsenal is getting pretty big too though.”

> “You need help with a recruitment drive?”

“It’d sure help,” she nods. “All if us apart from Tsuchiya leave at the end of the year and I don’t think she could service twenty tanks by herself.”

“It’ll be a shame to see you guys leave.”

“And it’ll be a shame to leave, but we can’t stay in high school forever ey?” She laughs. “Besides, she’ll join us the year after so it isn’t that bad.”

> “What if the members of the Sensha-Dō club helped out?”

She thinks it over, before slowly nodding.

“Not the heavy stuff like you help us with, but general maintenance and stuff I reckon they could do.” She turns to you. “That’s a good idea, done right it’ll save us time.”

“I’ll make sure it gets done then,” you promise.

“Good stuff Commander,” she nods. “We have the Federation kits so we’ll jury rig them to the tanks tonight, proper conversation will have to wait.”

“Sounds perfect Hoshino.” You spend a couple minutes longer idly chatting before you part ways. She heads to the engineering block and you head for the student council office, though not before moving Werewolf next to Frederick to see if anything happens. You’re no Max but you manage it well enough.

A short walk and an elevator trip later, you’re at the council office. You knock, wait for the ‘enter’ and walk in. As usual, Yuzu and Momo are hard at work; Anzu is doing nothing and Otto has made Anzu’s lap his new home.

“Hey Fritz!” Anzu waves lazily, “How’s it goin’ ?”

“Good Prez, you hard at work?”

“Obviously,” she gestures to the cat on her lap, you can hear the eyerolls from Momo and Yuzu.

“Well I hate to interrupt, but I need to know about the duelling league.”

“Sure, your next match is tomorrow.” She says it so casually it takes a second to register.

“Tomorrow.” You echo. “Any other important information I should know?”

“Yeah, you’ll play each team that made it through twice and we’ll know the field beforehand,” she explains. “We’re against Jatkosota.” You rack your brain and eventually you’re rewarded.

“The one that girl is from? Mika?” You ask. Anzu nods.

“That’s the one,” she confirms. “Their tanks aren’t quite as good as ours so I don’t think you’ll have much trouble.” You frown as you remember Koume’s reaction yesterday as well as Maho admitting Black Forest had problems with them.

“Alright, I think I got it,” you say. “Do you guys need help with anything else?”

“Denied!” Momo reappears next to you and slams a file down. “That’s the only work you’re responsible for, you’re not weaseling out it!”

“Sorry Prez, my boyfriend isn’t free labour,” Yuzu replies sweetly. You look over and Yuzu winks at you.

“My own student council… turned against me,” Anzu moans. “This is your fault.” She gives you the stink eye as she says it.

“It’s karma for dodging work all these years,” you reply. “Say, while I got you here, the automotive club mentioned getting professional help for the duration of the duelling league.”

“But that’s so expensive,” Anzu groans. “Can they not do it themselves?”

“I don’t think so, they need more people more than anything.” You say. An idea comes to mind. “Say, what about the engineering students, any chance of getting them on board?”

“Hmm, maybe.” Anzu muses. “They’re pretty busy usually, but I might be able to grab a couple to help you out.”

“How often are the league matches?” You ask.

“Every four days-ish,” Anzu answers. “A tank can’t fight twice in a row, so maybe eight days between each tank fighting at most?” She nods to herself then turns to Yuzu. “Koyama, put out a message to the Naval Studies engineering students, ‘seeking volunteers to assist Sensha-Dō team with repairs and maintenance’, offer the standard incentive package.” Yuzu writes all that down then tears the page off her notebook.

“I’ll get on that now,” she says as she leaves the room.

“Let’s see how the engineering students do, okay? Then we can look for professionals.” Anzu suggests.

“Fine by me Prez.” You make idle conversation for a little bit till Yuzu returns. After receiving a nice, squishy hug and stroking Otto you depart for the gymnasium.

Unlike when you usually enter the gym. The Volleyball club is not using the gym. Rather, mats have been laid out in the middle of the gym. Two figures in Kendo armour are going at it, though neither looks to be doing Kendo. One is wielding a Katana and the other a Rapier. Given that Saemonza and Erika are watching from the side, you surmise that the one with the Rapier is obviously Leo and the Katana wielder likely Oryou.

“Yah!” You turn back to the battle and see it reaching its conclusion. Leo is moving forward, throwing thrust after thrust at Oryou. She’s barely holding, but hold out she does, using the flat of her blade to parry each thrust. She reaches the edge of the mat and Leo thrusts once more to finishi it. She strikes. Instead of parrying, she moves forward and catches Leo’s sword arm under her armpit. He tries to yank it out but doesn’t get a chance, Oryou’s sword at his throat.

“I yield!” He calls, They drop their swords and break contact. That’s when Saemonza sees you.

“Huh. Is that allowed Sae? You know, the arm thing?” You ask, replaying the last couple seconds of the fight in your head.

“Well, if we were using any sort of official rules, then probably not.” Saemonza shrugs. “But we’re just a bunch on enthusiasts going at it so no one can stop us.”

“Well as long as no one is injured right?”

“Right!” Your sister answers. Oryou and Leo walk over as you talk, both sweating profusely from fighting under their protective gear.

“Ah Mackensen, did you see the fight?” Oryou asks.

“Sure did,” you confirm. “You’re pretty good, didn’t know you could catch blades that way.”

“Thank you Mackensen, it’s difficult, but if you do it puts the opponent at your mercy as you saw in the ring. If I had been a second too late then he would’ve landed a hit to my ribcage and I would have lost.”

“Moves like that are legal in HEMA but given we’re in Japan, Historical European Martial Arts clubs are hard to find,” Leo chips in. “Doubly so on a school carrier.”

“At least you have a sword-fighting club now,” you say sympathetically. “Can I have a go?”

“Sure, you can,” Saemonza answers. “Not with metal though.”

“Erika has a metal sword,” you point out.

“Erika isn’t allowed to use it yet,” your sister answers dejectedly in third person.

“Well, you can use Leo’s practice armour and take one of the wooden bokken we uh, borrowed from the Kendo club from the rack.” Saemonza answers. “Then just step into the ring and I’ll give you some pointers.” You do as ordered, retrieving Leo’s gear then head to the sword rack. As well as the ‘borrowed’ straight bokken, you see one in the familiar style of the rapier and another that looks more like a traditional Katana.

“Can I take any?” You ask.

“Any!” Sae confirms.

You take the bokken. While the Otaku lurking somewhere inside you calls out for the Katana, you stamp down on it brutally and take the bokken instead. Saemonza is standing in the middle of the mats that make up the ring, similarly armed.

“Good choice,” she nods when she sees you selected the bokken. “It’s always best to start simple with these things, a rapier in the right hands-“ she gestures to Leo, “-can be pretty scary but that’s unlikely in someone untrained.”

“Well, that’s why I’m here right?” You ask. Sae grins under her mask.

“That’s the spirit!” She cheers, brandishing hers at you.

The first thing you learn, is that sword fights are usually quick and dirty. The first thing Saemonza shows you is all the ways a real sword could kill you, or at least render you unable to fight. From that, you manage to surmise rather quickly that all sword fights are just killing the other poor sod before they kill you. Once you get that under your belt, you start to do rather well.

Saemonza’s able to move on quickly from the basics of movement to the basic strikes. Though most of her demonstrations end in a wack to the head, when she lets you have a go you manage to return the favour more than enough times to bludgeon your way into impressing her. Of course, that also means that she let loose a little more which isn’t great for your head.

You and Saemonza take a seat next to Oryou and sip energy drinks as you watch Erika and Leo in the ring. The two of them managed to find lightsabers somewhere and are horsing around, disregarding absolutely everything Saemonza just taught you about keeping it simple. On the flip side, that does make it far more entertaining to watch.

“So, what say you Mackensen?” Oryou asks as you watch the ‘fight’.

“Hah! You get used to it Mackensen,” Saemonza consoles you. “And you gave me quite a few good hits too in return.” You bicker lightly with Saemonza and Oryou as Leo and Erika continue their ‘duel’. Eventually, practice ends and you head home with Erika so you can get an early night given the task ahead of you tomorrow.

Monday 23rd July (Day 107)

It seems that early mornings have become depressingly common for you. Though you’re not scheduled to fight till the afternoon, there’s work to be done in preparation that should’ve been done yesterday but couldn’t thanks to a lazy little goblin. You put your cursing on hold for a minute as you extract yourself from Erika’s grasp. She grumbles at the loss of her heat source, but quickly finds Otto who happily replaces you as Erika’s hug toy.

You make a small breakfast for yourself and some Sausages for Erika whenever she wakes up. You leave them in the pan and head out for the warehouse to get started on work for the day.

You arrive before anyone else, sans someone with a key it seems. Probably the Student Council since Momo’s inside fussing with her tank already. You consider approaching her but decide against it given you still have to get ready for the fight against Jatkosota. Curious, Werewolf and Frederick’s guns are pointing in opposite directions. Odd given you left them both with the gun pointed forward

Pick two
> Ask Miho more about Jatkosota
> Ask Momo if the tanks were like that when she got here
> Pick who you’re taking with you to the duel
> See if you can buy anything last minute for Frederick so you can use him
> Ask Werewolf what happened.
> Write-in

That’s it for tonight. Tomorrow we take on Jatkosota. Hope to see you all there. Including the lurkers I know are reading.

> Ask Miho more about Jatkosota

You don’t really want to think about war machines behaving like high school girls so you decide not to. Instead, you decide to try to find out more about your opponent. Recalling your very late birthday dinner with Maho and the Black Forest girls’ reaction to Jatkosota you decide that Miho might be a good source of information on them.

You check your watch. It’s about the time that people usually begin arriving for morning training, so you just head to the lounge and wait. About ten minutes later, your team members start arriving. You say hello to the girls as they arrive and sure enough, a few minutes later, Miho enters the garage with Anglerfish team.

“Oh hi, Fritz,” Miho says as you approach. “How are you?”

“I’m good,” you reply. “You got a minute to talk about Jatkosota?”

“Oh,” her face pales as you say that. “We’re against them in the duelling league, right?”

“We are,” you confirm. “Is that a problem?”

“Let’s go to the lounge,” Miho mutters. She separates from Anglerfish team and the two of you head to the lounge. Miho takes a seat on one of the sofas and you take a seat opposite.

“So?”

“Jatkosota is… different to most other high schools or even Sensha-Dō clubs, they place an emphasis on individuality, meaning they’re not all that great as a team…”

“But as individual tank crews?”

“Deadly,” Miho looks you in the eye before breaking out into a nervous smile. “If they get close, they can do things that shouldn’t be possible in the tanks that they have.”

“I see,” you say as you sit back, scratching your chin. “And their tanks?”

“A mix of early war German and Russian tanks, but it’s Mika you need to worry about.”

“The BT-42?” You ask.

“The BT-42,” Miho confirms. “It moves like the wind is carrying it sometimes.” You think on that information in silence for a few moments before Miho breaks it. “So, who do you think you’re going to bring?”

> Duck (Comet)

“I was thinking yourself and the volleyball club,” you say. Miho considers that and nods her head.

“Alright, I’ll go tell the girls to get ready.” She stands and stretches for a minute. “The rest of the team will be able to watch these matches, so everyone’s really excited.”

“Let’s make sure not to let them down then.”

“Right!” Miho leaves the lounge area to go tell her crew to get ready and you do the same. Duck team is right where you expected them to be, warming up by their tank.

“Hey Commander! What’s up!?” Noriko yells, mid spilt as you approach. “Do you need something!?”

“I need a third team for the duel today, can you help me with that?”

“We sure can Commander!” Akebi answers. “We’re almost done getting ready!”

“Good to hear,” you nod. “Finish warming up, then move your tank onto the transporter.”

“We’ll get right on it, Commander,” Shinobu answers. You leave them to it and head back to your own tank. Your crew is finishing up their initial preparations and Ruby has cranked the turret back to its neutral, forward facing position.

“Ready to rumble gentlemen?” You ask as you climb into your hatch and begin running through your checklist.

“Born ready!” Leo answers for the rest of your crew. You quickly finish your preparations and load Werewolf onto the transporter. He’s closely followed by Anglerfish team and the Comet. You climb off Werewolf and as you’re heading for the transporter’s cabin Anzu shouts to you.

“We’ll be following in buses! See you there Commander!”

“See you there!” You shout back, then climb into the transporter.

The trip from the carrier is short and you soon arrive at the match field. It’s far busier than previous duels which had just been you, your opponent and the officials. Theses matches resemble the tournament matches far more in that there are large spectator stands as well. What’s different, is that four teams are going to be fighting today instead of two. The tank transporter deposits you at Ōoarai’s rally point. Jatkosota’s is opposite you, but there’s no tanks.

“Fritz, what’s the rule if they don’t show?” Miho asks from her tank.

“We win by default,” you answer. The tournament organisers are similarly stumped but half an hour later a lone BT-42 trundles into view. As expected, Mika has arrived. Given their lateness, you don’t have time to go say hello, but since Black Forest and Pravda are fighting afterwards, you’ll have plenty of time to do so before that.

“Alright! We’re against a BT-42,” you say for Duck team’s benefit. “I’d like…

“Alright Commander, good luck!” Taeko exclaims.

“Fight well Fritz,” Miho offers. “Remember to keep your wits about you.”

“I will,” you promise. You then switch your mic to the intercom. “Max, get us to the start. We have a BT-42 to kill.”

“Should be easy right?” He jokes. You’re not too sure about that.

You arrive at your starting point a few minutes later. Werewolf’s turbine humming as it slowly spins up.

“Match is on Fritz,” Leo advises you.

“Alright,” you take a glance at the map. You know Mika can move fast and will want to close to short range with you. The hills might let you see her from further away but she could be behind you fast if you pick wrong. The town might help funnel her towards you but your gun is pretty unwieldy. Finally, a forest. She wouldn’t expect it but it’d massively benefit her…

Skills:
It's over Anakin: Always shoot first on the high ground after being stationary for a turn.

Lance of Longinus – Once per match, if Ruby has a target’s location, and an unobstructed line of fire between herself and the target, she may fire a shot at it guaranteed to hit, and a guaranteed to penetrate up to 200mm of armour

Initial P: When adjacent to an enemy, a 1d20 can be rolled. On success, Werewolf moves to the other side of the enemy and gets the initiative next round. Can be used while under fire when moving to avoid a penetrating hit.

> Called shot – can take aim at a specific point/part of an enemy tank and hit it on a regular accuracy success

To ready:
Suped-up high explosive ammunition

Smoke grenade launcher

Adler – This tank regularly fought from a higher elevation. Any hits on this tank while it is higher than the opponent hit the toughest armour face

“You got it, Fritz,” Max replies. A second later Werewolf responds engine whirring as he pics up speed. You trundle south-west, far faster than most tanks Werewolf’s size should be moving. You trundle past the tip of the town and into the hilled western side of the field.

“Take us up this hill Max,” you order. He does as you say, Werewolf easily climbing the hill, engine revving but barely losing any speed in the process. “Halt!” You order as you survey the surroundings. You survey the field ahead of you and see nothing, similarly, from what you can see of the town nothing is approaching from there.

“What are you thinking Fritz?” Ruby asks over the intercom.

“Wondering which way Mika’s going to come from,” you confess. “Axel, load the supped-up high explosive.

“On it.” Werewolf’s turret whirs as Ruby slowly positions the gun facing the junction. As she’s doing that, you don’t waste any time.”

“Axel! Leo! Help me put the camo net on!” You climb out of the tank, followed closely by Axel who has the bundled-up net and Leo from his hatch at the front of Werewolf. You hastily spread the net over Werewolf. You have to use another for Werewolf’s hull as stretching it over the gun would block Ruby’s sight, but you manage to get it done in record time. The three of you clamber back into Werewolf and resume your positions. You’re watching the southern road when the turret starts to turn.

“Ruby? Have you seen something?” You ask. You shift your binoculars towards the orientation of the gun but see nothing. “Have you seen anything?”

Yes, you rolled 4 and the rest is to show you the dc.

It was 10 to start, + your penetration due to gun calibre and - the enemy's armour. The dc comes to 20 meaning you have to roll under 20 to penetrate in that case which is impossible not to do.

Hope that makes sense.

> Try talking to Werewolf

“Talk to me bud, you sense something over there?” You ask, patting your cupola. You’re met with a visceral but distracted no. Before you see something. Everything in fact. Or at least everything inside of Werewolf. You also see a hazy amount in a sphere about 1 meter in radius from Werewolf and down Ruby’s sight. “This how is you see huh?” You ask, but you feel no reply. Instead you get a hazy memory of an M5 Stuart hitting Werewolf in the rear. You ignore the rest of the memory involving turning the Stuart’s crew to mincemeat. You shake your head and refocus on the battle. A minute later, you see something.

“Enemy spotted! 270 meters! 2 O’clock!” You call. Through the gap in two houses, you spot the BT-42 closing rapidly. “Ruby!”

“On the way!” She pulls the trigger.

BANG

The familiar sound of Werewolf’s gun singing fills your ears. You watch as the shell screams forward and slams into the BT-42. Its return shot is cut off as it goes careens into a nearby building.

“Did I kill it?” Ruby asks. You look again and see that it’s now roaring towards you again, this time on wheels.

“Still running,” you grumble. “Alright! Let’s…

> Smoke mark her

“Moving now,” Max confirms. Werewolf starts moving in reverse. Far slower than he goes forwards, but still fast enough to count, especially against the speed demon you’re against.

“Ruby, I’m prepping the marking smoke,” you warn. You move your finger to a trigger you rarely press, linked to a canister at the bottom of each launcher. The smoke will be far thinner than usual, but its purpose is to help with wind and range rather than obscuring anything.

“Got it,” she confirms.

“And Axel, if the first shot doesn’t knock her out be ready to load another okay?” You’re answered by the thump, thump of Axel unloading two shells from the ready rack for use. You return to scanning the road ahead of you as Leo racks the slide on his MG. Seconds later, she appears.

“Right ahead of us! Firing smoke!” You shout as you thumb the release. Smoke canisters streak through the air towards the charging BT-42. It’s bathed in bright blue smoke as Leo opens up with his MG.

It gets closer.

“Ruby!” You shout in warning as it closes but you get no reply other than the slow shift of Werewolf’s barrel.

It gets closer.

The BT-42 opens up, howitzer roaring. The shot flies lazily through the air, slamming into the turret but failing to detonate or do any damage.

It gets closer.

It’s within spitting distance now, close enough you can see the devilish grin on the driver’s face. You curse and rack the MG 131 mounted on the pintle. You quickly aim and squeeze the trigger.

But it’s Werewolf’s gun that fires.

BOOM

The round screams forth and slams into the tank’s upper engine deck. It immediately cuts out, the white flag popping from the turret as the tank trundles past losing power.

“Could ye have left it any later ya bastard?” Max curses, accent slipping out.

“Art takes time,” your gunner fires back. “The gun is my brush and the sucker the other side of the barrel my canvas.”

“Just take us down there Max,” you interrupt. He starts moving, continuing his argument with Ruby as he does. You tune it out with practised ease.

When you arrive, Mika is sat atop the wrecked BT-42, strumming her kantele. The other two members of her crew are arranged on the grass before her, looking entirely unbothered by their loss.

> “Sorry for knocking the wind out of your sails.”

You call from your position atop Werewolf. That gets a snort from the redhaired driver and a smile from Mika herself.

“You knocked them from my sails, or they were never behind me in the first place?” She asks cryptically.

“Well, given how fast you were moving, I’d say it was the former,” you say as you climb down from Werewolf.

“Quite… this is Mikko, the one responsible for our pace.” She gestures to the redhead who barely moves from her position on the ground to look at you.

“Sup?” She asks, mild amusement on her face.

“You all don’t look very bothered about losing.” You observe.

“If you take a stack of papers into a hurricane, do you worry about the one sheet you lost?” Mika remarks.

“I see.” You don’t, but you’re not about to let her know that. “I suppose I’ll see you next time Ōoarai and Jatkosota duel.”

“That Fritz, depends entirely on which way the wind blows.” You wave goodbye to Mika as you depart for Ōoarai’s rally point.

>Find the rest of the Ōoarai girls to get Yuzu cuddles/watch the next match

No one else is present when you arrive, sans the crew for the tank transported and the Public Morals Committee.

“Commander Hermann! Good showing! Please move your tank onto the transported and register your crew for the schooltime on-shore leave pass!” Sodoko greets you.

“Course, give us a moment!” You shout back. Max expertly loads up Werewolf and the five of you climb out of the tank. The minute you’re out, Gomoyo hops into the cabin alongside the driver. Her presence means at the very least, you know nothing will happen to Werewolf on the way back without you.

“Where are the others?” You ask. Sodoko jerks a finger behind her then continues writing in her notebook.

“Spectator stands,” she tears a page from it and hands it to you. “Your pass.”

“Uh, thanks,” you answer. She does the same for the rest of your crew, and the five of you head for the stands. Sure enough, you see the rest of the team packed together in the stands. You head straight for Yuzu. You chat and banter with the girls as you make your way, but you don’t stop. Yuzu knows exactly what’s happening and squeezes the president down a bit, making enough room for you to sit next to her.

“My big, handsome champion,” she smiles as she wraps her arms around you. You’re content to sit there and bask in the warmth. Your eyes drift up to the big screen showing the match and you do a double-take.

Black Forest is fielding Erika in her Königstiger. Not unusual nor worthy of any alarm by itself. What is worthy of alarm is Pravda’s answer. Katyusha standing proudly in the cupola, with a Pravda symbol put on so recently the paint is still dripping, an IS-3.

That's it for tonight. Thanks for playing all.

I've been thinking about what to run when this finishes (Probably around Christmas or early January at the pace we're going) and I had a couple of ideas I wanted to run past you guys since you're the people I'm running for.

> X-COM style cryptid hunter game
> A 40K Baneblade Titan-hunter quest
> A quest based on the US Coast Guard
> A RWBY Huntsman quest running in parallel to but not going too near the main plot

I'm only saying this because I take a long time to plan things and want to get a headstart on it so there's no significant downtime.

If you have any preferences or questions then drop em below and I'll have a look in the morning. Otherwise, see you tomorrow for a heavy tank hoedown.

“Don’t let her hear you say that.” Anzu chips in. You acknowledge it with a grunt but otherwise, focus on the two titans clashing in front of you. Erika began on the northside and Katyusha on the south. Both choose to avoid the town, Erika heading west as you did towards the hills and Katyusha hugging the eastern edge of the town.

“They both have very large guns,” Momo observes. “It’ll likely come down to who gets the first shot off.”

“Most likely,” you grunt out still focused on the duel playing out before you. Erika’s Königstiger slowly climbs the same hill you used against Mika. A smart move given the accuracy of her gun.

“Is that a good idea Fritz?” Anzu asks. “Sure, it’ll let her see further but won’t it also leave her exposed?”

“Erika’s gun is far more accurate,” you explain. “It’s a calculated risk that even if Katyusha does see her first, Erika can snap a shot off first.” Anzu nods at your explanation and returns her attention to the match. Katyusha seems to have seen Erika on the hill, turning onto the junction that you aimed down previously.

“Erika’s seen her,” you observe. The Tiger immediately starts reversing in order to get it’s front towards the IS-3, turret turning. Katyusha pauses to fire and the shot flies forth, slamming into Erika’s tracks.

You see the track slowly falling off the tank as Erika returns fire, the shot bouncing off the pike nose.

“It comes down to this!” You hear Yukari exclaim. “The final shot! Who can reload faster!”

Both tanks aim and the guns are silent for a second before both roar at the same time.

Rolling for Erika and Katyusha’s awareness.

Katyusha’s shot lands first. It slams into the side of Erika’s tank, seconds before her return shot hits. The gun barrel snaps off the IS3 but not before the white flag on Erika’s tank goes up.

“Seems Katyusha won,” you say aloud. You look up at the screen and see Erika cursing up a storm. “Someone’s not very happy.”

“Eh, she lost to you she lost to Katyusha, I don’t see why it’s that big of a deal,” Anzu shrugs.

“Must be annoying to for the lose to be so close,” Yuzu muses. Her lips quirk upwards. “Not that we’d know.”

“Not that we’d know,” you echo with a smile. You stay in place for a minute just chatting with the student council as your teammates around you slowly file away towards waiting buses. Not wanting to hold everyone, yourself and the Student Council also start making your way the buses. As you do, you spot a familiar silhouette. One of the only silhouettes taller than you.

“Nonna! That way! I spot the Ōoarai vice commander!” You hear a very familiar voice call out. Sur enough, you see Nonna pushing through the crowd towards you. Her, Katyusha and Klara appear in front of you.

Пpивeт, кpacaвчик,” Klara smiles waving at you. Katyusha is far less friendly.

“You there! Hermann! You were watching the match, weren’t you?” She demands.

“Sure was Katyusha, congratulations on the win.”

“Hmph,” she seems to appreciate your congratulations. “There’s no place for fancy tricks in the duelling league! I’ll see to it that Pravda crushes the competition, including you Hermann!”

You chose to ignore that and instead ask a question that had been bugging you.

“How did you get an IS-3?” You ask.

“It’s been lent to us from a friend for the duration of the league!” Katyusha says smugly. “We’ll be using it for the entire duration!”

> “Well good luck then Katyusha.” No point antagonizing her.

You’re tempted to try antagonising her so you have a chance to face an IS-3, but chances are you’ll face them anyway and you’d rather not any a friend or at the very least a fellow Commander.

“Hmph! Keep your luck, we’ll not be needing it!” Katyusha fires back.

“Well neither will we Katyusha,” you reply. “We’ve not lost yet and don’t plan on doing so anytime soon.”

“Well, Pravda isn’t losing again!” Katyusha promises. It devolves into a short staring contest but after about a minute she thrusts a hand forward. “To the victor.”

“To the victor,” you take her hand and firmly shake it.

“Where is your Commander?” She asks. You gesture towards the bus and she gets the message. “Pass the message along to Mihoska then. Nonna!” Nonna promptly turns to leave. Klara follows but not before throwing another remark your way.

Дo cвидaния!” You still have no idea what she’s saying.

“What message?” Momo asks confused.

“The message that we’re going to win,” Anzu interrupts. “Let’s head home!”

After a short bus ride, you arrive at port once again. You head for the warehouse first and sure enough, Werewolf is sitting proudly in his usual spot. You may have known logically that he would be fine, but it always feels nice to reaffirm it with your own eyes. After a quick exterior inspection reveals no real damage, you call it a night and head back to your apartment.

Erika isn’t there, but that’s not unusual. She was on the bus to the ship so you’re not really concerned. You kick off your shoes and collapse onto the sofa.

>Troll /tanks/ with reddit-tier shitposting while seeing what they say about your duel.
> Quiet night with Yuzu

Your evening begins with a call to Yuzu. It takes a few rings but eventually you get through to her.

“Fritz?” She answers. “What’s up, sweetheart?

“You want to come over?” You ask. “It’s been a while since we’ve done something…”

“It has hasn’t it?” She sighs. “Alright, it won’t be for long, but I’ll be over soon.”

“Love you,” you say in lieu of goodbye.

“And I, you.” She answers, putting down the phone. While you wait, you decide to check /tanks/. It’s the usual shit-fest, and you sling shit just as much as the rest of them. Your posting about the superiority of the 1000 times folded German steel and how Katyusha’s win was just a fluke, seems to be triggering the Russian Janny Wuoshka who’s deleting your posts as fast as you can post them. Of course, that leads to return of The Last (IS-3) Defender who calls him out on his bullshit. A night well spent if you do say so yourself. There’s not much on your duel itself sans a seal clubbing reference but you think it was far closer than that.

When browsing a dead board becomes boring, you check your messages. There’s the usual from Koume as well as a message from home. Interestingly, there’s also one from an unknown number. You don’t have time to read it entirely but you manage to discern that it’s from Henschel & Sons. Interesting. Your thoughts are knocked aside by a knock on the door. You open it and lo and behold, your girlfriend.

“Hi Fritz,” she leans up to give you a kiss which you eagerly accept. After dumping her bag and jacket on the table she promptly heads for the sofa. You take a seat next to her and she rearranges herself so she’s resting on your chest. You wait for her to get comfortable before you talk.

“Rough day?”

“Mhm,” she answers. She says nothing for a good five minutes before speaking again.

“Hey, Fritz?”

“Yes?” You ask, stroking her hair.

“You know how I met your parents?”

“Yes?” You think you know where this is going.

“Would you mind meeting mine? Next week we dock in Ibaraki… You don’t have to but…”

"I'd be glad to,” you reply. Yuzu’s visibly relieved at that.

“Good,” she says as she hugs you tighter. “I don’t know why I was so nervous; I knew you would say yes.”

“I feel like I’ll leave a great impression on them, by the end of the night they’ll say: 'Please take care of our daughter and bring her happiness.” You muse, stroking her hair as you do.

“You’re mocking me,” She complains as she looks up at you and pouts.

“I’m not! I promise! I’m just being confident. It’s kind of nerve-wracking you know, I’ve not done this before.” She stares into your eyes for a good thirty seconds. She seems to like what she sees as she nods and lays her head back on your chest.

“You don’t have anything to worry about, my parents are harmless.” She pauses to grab your hand and place it on her stomach. “It’s just my brothers can be little devils is all.”

“I’ll keep that in mind,” you promise. You sit in a comfortable silence, idly watching whatever game show is on the TV.

“If you need any help with student council work then just let me know,” you offer.

“That’s sweet Fritz but you don’t need to. I wouldn’t want to subject my worst enemy to that.”

“Well you do, and I want to help you,” you state firmly. She seems to consider it a minute before nodding.

“Alright, but don’t say I didn’t warn you,” she grins up at you. “I think you deserve a reward for being such a gentleman~”

“What kind of reward?” You ask, already leaning down to kiss her. It’s that moment Erika chooses to return.

“I’m back!” She shouts, throwing the door open. She then looks at you, then Yuzu, then retreats. “I’ll be back! Tomorrow!” and slams the door behind her.

“I suppose we do,” Yuzu smiles innocently. She wraps her arms around your neck, and you pick her up, bridal carrying her into the bedroom. Neither of you gets much sleep that night…

Tuesday 24th July (Day 108)

Your morning begins very similarly to how it usually does. The only exception is that today you’re the big spoon. You relish the opportunity, hugging Yuzu tighter and making sure to cop a feel of her sloped armour. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end and eventually your alarm goes off.

“Nooo…” You hear Yuzu moan from next to you. As much as you agree with her on that, duty calls and you very reluctantly climb out of bed and head to the bathroom. Your only consolation prize is Yuzu joining you in the shower. It’s a pretty good prize.

> Put a team through the advanced crew training area (Duck)

You decide to put Duck team through the wringer. They do a decent job, far better than last time they went through it, but not enough to be considered aces. It’s a shame, given you know they’re capable of it but you’re not worried given you have about twenty days till your match with Black Forest.

> All non-vet teams gain 10 XP

> Do a sport Volleyball

At lunch, you decide to do some volleyball. Duck team are as hyped up as ever, even more so given that the inter-school volleyball tournament has started and from what you here, Ōoarai’s team is dominant. The session you join at lunch is a light practice session, but given how intense the Volleyball club is, ‘light practice’ still means several volleyballs to the face. You do however finally manage to get a ball past Akebi, the club’s blocker which gives you no small amount of satisfaction.

> Give Azusa a lesson on something Tankery related

That evening as you head into the warehouse, you decide to make good on your promise and teach Azusa. You find her with the rest of Rabbit team trying to conduct general maintenance on their tank and failing miserably.

“Are you alright girls?” You ask, watching the scene. Azusa is attempting to pull one of the VVSS rollers off the tank. She is being pulled by the other five rabbits with little success. She lets go when she sees you leading to her collapsing onto the other Rabbits pulling her creating a dogpile.

“No. We are not Commander Hermann,” Azusa admits. “We’re having some trouble.”

“Just some?” You ask drily. “Come on, let me show you how it’s done.” You approach the VVSS system and examine it. It’s not the drive wheels your used to but suspension is suspension. It’s also not the lesson you were planning on giving but it’s an important one nonetheless, one that Azusa will benefit from for the rest of her career

> Rolling 1d10, this is added to Rabbit team’s Advanced training area DC

> Ask Saori what happened in her love triangle

After you finish helping Azusa, you decide to sate your curiosity regarding what happened between Saori, Max and Leo. Usually, you weren’t one for rumours, ignoring the usual schoolyard gossip but this is an exception given that it involves two of your crew. You find Saori in the lounge with Hana.

“Hey Saori, Hana. How are you doing?”

“Fine thank you, Fritz,” Hana replies smiling back.

“I’m pretty good Fritz! Or do I have to call you Commander in the warehouse?” Saori asks

“Fritz is fine,” you reply before getting to the issue. “Say Saori, what happened between you, Max and Leo?” Hana’s smile immediately grows at that.

“Oh,” she replies, going very red. “We’re dating now.”

“You and Max?”

“No.”

“So, Leo then?”

“N-no…”

“Then you mean-“

“Both.” Make interrupts from her previously unseen position on the other side of Hana.

>"Huh. Guess you really are the romance expert."

Your brain short circuits for a minute. Both? You had not expected that, but given it’s Saori you’re frankly not surprised.

“Fritz?” Saori asks. You look up and see her looking at you worried. “Is everything alright?” It takes you a moment to realise why she’s so worried. If you disapprove it makes her relationship (relationships?) that much harder, and possibly unviable.

“Yes, everything’s fine,” you say with a massive sigh. “I’m surprised… but I guess you really are the romance expert.”

“You should’ve known better than to doubt me!” Saori replies with a wink and a smile, but you can hear the obvious relief in her voice. “They’re real sweethearts! You know they offered to take me to the Eiffel Tower one day!”

A dark vision fills your mind, and you short circuit again.

After a suitable recovery involving the hardest drink you can find, courtesy of Ogin, you manage to make your way out of the warehouse. Though not before you threaten Max and Leo to ensure they don’t play with Saori’s heart.

> Read Henschel’s message

When you get home, you finally get a minute to open the email that’s been sitting in your inbox since last night from Henschel.

Dear Commander Fritz Hermann,

I am writing to you today in order to propose a meeting, following on from your attendance of the ball hosted on the Saturday 14th July which you attended.

As an expert tanker yourself and perhaps one of the only experts on the Panther II I’d like to enlist your experience in the development of the Ersatz-Panther II.

As a relative celebrity both in Japan and in Germany, two of the most active countries in the world in Tankery I also feel your support would enable the Panzers we produce to see mass adoption among less well off as well as allow us to expand the range of tanks offered.

Please do not hesitate to suggest a date you’re free for us to meet or contact me with any further questions.

Best regards,

Frederick Henschel Junior

CEO of Henschel & Sons

Didn't get to suggest this at work due to the cell service in the area suddenly getting banned, but we could make the Saori thing interesting. We could convince her that it would be a great idea if Leo and Max also dated EACH OTHER, a true test for the Romance Master. Or at least convince her that it would be great if she tried to get them to do it as a joke. That she definitely didn't hear from us.

This isn't really meant as a reply to Henschel, but a possible compromise to the overall situation with reproduction tanks. Maybe he could work with the various leagues to ensure that the types of tanks stay in roughly the same ratios as they are now. This would allow for an increase in the overall supply without it becoming nothing but late-war tanks dominating everything else. He could actually work with each league or organization to get the proper ratios they desire. Unlimited for example might not be so picky with maintaining the current ratio. Maybe a draft like system could be used to keep rich schools from immediately snapping everything up and shutting other schools out.

> Say nothing for now

Your fingers hover over the reply button. You have a lot of thoughts about the new manufactured tanks but in the end you decide against saying anything for now to be revisited later.

You put down your phone and take a minute just to relax. It’s almost four months you’ve been at Ōoarai and a lot has changed, especially the Tankery team which you think you can claim a fairly large portion of the credit. You hear a knock at the door. You’re about to get up to open it but the door slowly creaks open, Erika’s head appearing around the corner.

“Sup, you fucking?” She asks. You search your vicinity for something to throw but find nothing apart from your phone.

“Language Erika.” You grumble at her. Seeing there’s no Yuzu present, she walks over, drapes her arms around your neck from behind and rests her chin on your head.

“Rough day?” She asks.

“Just a long one,” you reply leaning back into her. You spend a minute like that relaxing before she speaks again.

“You know, if you want, I can give you some… space,” she says it almost reluctantly and you can’t help but quirk your lips at it.

“You’re willing to give me up to Yuzu?”

“Not for the whole week!” She quickly clarifies. “Just bits, a couple days a week.”

“That’s awfully generous of you Erika.”

“Well what can I say,” she boasts. “I am very magnanimous.”

You slip into the familiar pattern of bickering with Erika. Something you’re able to do without engaging any brain power.

Wednesday 25th July (Day 109)

> Put a team through the advanced crew training area

That morning you put Rabbit team through the grinder again. It’s frustrating. Both for them and yourself. Them because they’ve repeated had no success and you because you know they’re capable of doing it. You’re sorely tempted just to say screw it and move onto something else, but despite her and her crew’s frustrations they continue pushing through so you endeavour to do the same. They come back disappointed, but ready to go again tomorrow.

At lunch, you head for the Student Council office. You give your customary knock and receive the usual ‘enter’. You’re surprised to see Anzu doing actual work for the first time.

“Prez are you ill?” You ask aloud prompting a snort of laughter from Yuzu and a supressed grin from Momo.

“I have a cockroach problem,” she replies cryptically. “I’m just squashing them now.”

“Anything I can help with?”

“You sure can if you keep winning hard.” She answers. “Let me handle the roaches and you handle the tanks.”

“Sure thing Prez, you mind letting me go shopping?”

She turns her computer around.

“All yours.”

I'm in favor of buying the extras. If others support, maybe finance a BT-5 to repair and sell later (we'll have to up the recruitment for the automotive club). We could probably generate more interest and backing in the club if we set aside a training session or two a week where students or the public who volunteer to assist in maintenance get to participate in training/riding the tanks. We could probably achieve more if we make the Type-5 center stage for public events.

You start off by buying equipment for Frederick the Great. You spare absolutely no expense, buying some of the best equipment on offer. Of course, that does leave you slightly broke but it’s a small price to pay for making the tank an absolute beast. Or more of a beast than it already is. You also place an order for a BT-5, when Anzu sees it she looks up at you curiously.

“I thought we had better tanks than a BT-5?” She asks.

“We do.” You confirm. “But the automotive club needs more members and I think we could use this to make it happen.”

“Mhm.” Anzu looks sceptical but shrugs and approves the order anyway. “Well this is cheaper than paying professionals so if it works, great.”

>Ōoarai now has 65 credits and owes 22
> Fritz has 0 credits

“Thanks, Anzu.” You sit in the council office and relax with the three of them for a bit.

As you leave, you send a text to your dad telling him about Frederick and promising to keep him updated. You get no immediate response, but that’s a given since your dad is incompetent with technology at the best of times and a luddite at the worst. With that done, you head for lessons.

> Reassign some of your crews to new tanks

After lessons finish, you head to the warehouse as normal. The other crews are also around, working on their tanks, talking tactics (you hope) and otherwise preparing for the next stage of the tournament. Your eyes drift to the spare tanks right at the end of Ōoarai’s workshop. Some of them are better than the tanks you’re currently fielding and there’s no point in just having them sit there collecting dust.

The Type-5 is obviously still out of commission, the outside has been cleaned up, but it’s still more or less a wreck on the inside. You watch the automotive club’s slow removal of the top of the 38t as they begin converting it to a Hetzer.

> Consult Miho and Yukari, let Azusa sit in.

You grab Miho, Yukari and Azusa. Miho as the Commander and likely second most experienced tanker in the room; Yukari as the resident expert on tanks and Azusa as its probably a learning experience.

“So, what do you need Fritz!?” Yukari asks excitedly. “More reconnaissance!? “

“Down sparky,” you laugh. “I’m not sure if it’s safe to try that on Black Forest, but that’s not why we’re here.”

“We’re here because of the new tanks right?” Azusa asks.

“We sure are,” you confirm. “We need to figure out who to assign them to.”

“Well, that’s easy! Why not just assign them to the oldest tanks we have! Up our firepower!” Yukari suggests. “We give the student council the Challenger, Shark team the Cromwell and the Public Morals Committee the Sherman!”

“Shark team are very protective of their tank…” Azusa chips in.

“She’s right, Akiyama,” Miho interjects. “Perhaps we up-gun the cooking club by giving them the Cromwell instead? It’s not too different from their tank.”

“Isn’t the 38t being converted to a Hetzer?” Azusa asks you. You confirm with a nod and she nods back. “So, then there’s no need to move them, right? Koyama-Senpai is a good driver and the Hetzer would still make a pretty good flag tank.”

“So, who do we give the Challenger?” Yukari asks.

“What about Ocelot?” Miho suggests. “Mikan doesn’t seem all that attached to her tank so I’m sure they wouldn’t mind a better Tank Destroyer.”

“I’ll help them get used to their new tanks,” Miho says. “You keep up your work with Rabbit and Duck team and I’ll help them get used to their new tanks.”

“Sounds like a plan.” The conversation devolves from there into just general conversation. Before you know it, evening practice is over. Azusa excuses herself to go see her friends, but you stop Miho and Yukari before they leave.

> Meet with a team you’ve not met with for a long time (Anglerfish)

“Miho, Yukari. I’ve not seen you all in a while. Are you busy?”

“We were going to go out to get dinner, do you want to come?” Miho asks.

“Sounds good to me, lead the way.” You head back to Anglerfish, and once you’ve regrouped with them, you head out to get dinner. The six of you head to a small fast food place, the same place you got lunch for the Automotive Club from, and take one of the larger tables. As Saori is regaling the others with tales of dates with Max and Leo that you’re sure didn’t happen you poke Miho in the shoulder.

“Hmm? What is it, Fritz?”

“Here, read this.” You hand her your phone with the message from Henschel. “What do you think of it?” You watch as her face changes from curiosity to confusion and eventually to something you can’t quite decipher. A mix of both excitement and skepticism if you had to describe it.

“Ersatz-Panzers huh?” She says. “It sounds too good to be true, I know a lot of teams that would kill to get their hands on a tank like a Panther II.”

“So, you think I should go for it?”

“I think you should at least listen to what they have to say.”

“What who has to say?” Yukari asks, losing interest in Saori’s story as she senses something tank related. You pass her the phone and watch as she reads it. Her face is…mixed.

“You don’t think I should do it?” You ask.

“No! No!” She rushes to reassure you. “I think it’s a good thing, and a really cool job but new tanks don’t have the same soul old ones do.”

“Quite literally right?” Hana interrupts with a giggle. It seems that Saori’s only listener is Mako who’s soundly asleep.

“Literally indeed.” You chuckle before tuning back into Saori Dating Radio™.

After your dinner with Anglerfish, you head back to your apartment. You see Erika prepping her tankery uniform, the old one she wore before she came to Ōoarai.

“What’s the occasion?” You ask, watching as she carefully folds it and places it in a bag.

“Fighting alongside Maho in the Semis,” she grunts.

“I see.”

You can’t help but melt at the very serious expression she’s wearing.

“My cute little tank commander!” You coo, wrapping your arms around her and giving her a headpat. She instantly turns into a hellcat and you can’t help but laugh. “You’re usually the one initiating the hug!”

“This is different!” She hisses. “I have a reputation to uphold!”

“To all the people watching us?” You ask drily. She seems to realise both the futility and the irrelevance of her struggle and settles into the hug.

“Meanie,” she pouts, pretending not to enjoy it.

“Sure, I am,” you say rolling your eyes before moving back to the topic of the duel. “Do you want to take Werewolf tomorrow?”

“You don’t mind?” She asks, turning so she can look up at you.

“Nah, it’s fine. We can’t use Werewolf on Friday since he fought in the first duel so go wild.”

“Aw yea- “

“Not too wild,” you interrupt. “No rams.”

“That was a one-time thing,” Erika grumbles.

“I’m sure,” you roll your eyes. “Hit them hard and fast and listen to Maho.”

“Yeah, yeah.” She counter-rolls her eyes.

“And say hi to Koume for me.”

“You sound like mom!” she accuses. You counter it by tickling her into submission.

Thursday 26th July (Day 110)

You wake up clinging to Fritz, as you usually do when you sleepover with him. For the first time in a long time, you’re awake before him. You’re Erika Hermann, recently Ace tanker and soon to be the greatest tanker in the world.

You carefully extricate yourself from next to Fritz and underneath Otto. Fritz sleeps, but he doesn’t wake. You’re tempted to wake him, to get another hug that you definitely do not enjoy but he works hard so you sneak out to get ready.

> Do your usual flexing routine

You decide to forgo searching for your sword and instead, take your position in front of the mirror. You make sure to hit all the mandatory bodybuilding poses, including your favourite, the front double bicep. Those guns were some of the deadliest in the under 18s German Women’s boxing nationals and you’re damn proud of them. Once you’re done, you quickly use the bathroom then change into some travelling clothes. Your tankery clothes are packed in your bag, ready to be changed into later.

You manage to scrounge some breakfast leftover from yesterday’s and wash it down with some orange juice. You finish, sling your bag over your shoulder and make for the door.

“You forgot something.” You turn and see Fritz standing there in his pyjamas. He throws something at you, which you grab out of the air.

“My sword?” You ask, confused.

“Knock ‘em dead.” He yawns, heading back to the bedroom. “Love you.”

“Love you too!” You shout back as you leave.

> Talk to Werewolf about how epic you’re going to be

You head to the warehouse. One of Black Forest’s Zeppelins will be arriving shortly to pick yourself and your tank up. When you arrive, you’re alone. You head straight for Werewolf.

“Werewolf! Wake up!” You shout, rattling your sword against his front plate. “We have Tommies to slaughter!” He wakes up slowly and you get a distinct feeling that if you were anyone else, he’d be mightly pissed off. Nevertheless, the titan slowly wakes and as he does you explain your awesome plan.

“We’re gonna help Maho against some brits, or er Japanese pretending to be Brits!” You climb atop Werewolf and balance yourself on the turret before brandishing your sword. “Let’s ride!” You get a faint feeling of bemusement and anticipation. He’s as excited as you are.

“You know Erika, the tanks can’t talk back.” You look up and see your crew approaching. “People will think you’re crazy.”

He rolls his eyes at you.

“I don’t think that’ll change anything.” He walks over to Werewolf and slams a hand against his front plate. “Hey Werewolf, old buddy old pal you there?” Knock Knock Knock

“See? Nothing?” He says.

CRACK

Jaune flinches and dives for cover. You’re confused what happened for a moment but when you peer down you see the barrel of Werewolf’s hull machine gun smoking slightly.

“Fritz should maintain his tank better…” Jaune grumbles.

“You take that back!” You shout, brandishing your sword at him. Unfortunately, before you can take your driver’s head from his body you see the Black Forest Zeppelin approaching. “You’re lucky I need you to drive.” You grumble. He cautiously approaches Werewolf and mounts, as does the rest of your crew. As the Zeppelin descends, you roll Werewolf out.

A compartment opens as you approach, big enough to fit Werewolf. You guide Jaune in, then dismount. Maho approaches as you do.

“Erika, it’s good to see you again,” she says with a smile.

“Maho!” You cheer, bounding forwards. You give her a hug, which she accepts very stiltedly before relaxing into it and ruffling your hair in the same way Fritz does. “Come, we must discuss tactics.”

“Sure thing!” You chirp, following her further into the Zeppelin. She takes you to the cockpit. Just before it is a table with a map on it.

“This is the field, and these are Black Forest’s forces.” She says gesturing to the South Western side of the map. “We will split into four units. Nibelung 1, headed by myself; Nibelung 2, headed by Itsumi; Nibelung 3, headed by Akaboshi and Nibelung 4, which will also fall under myself.” She then draws several lines on the map.

“Nibelung 2 and 3 will advance till they encounter enemy resistance. Our job will be to take the centre hill so Nibelung 4 can advance and use the hill to provide fire support to the rest of the team. The JagdPanther will also be placed on the hill in order to destroy Darjeeling’s centurion should the opportunity arise.” She then turns to a small box behind her and rummages around for a moment. She produces a Black Forest Sensha-Dō uniform. “This is since you like to stick your head out, like your brother and myself.”

>”Only if I get an extra one to make Fritz wear.”

“Deal.” Maho says immediately. She hands you the uniform and taps something into her phone. “Give me his sizes as soon as you can, and I’ll have one made for you.”

“Will do!” Maho nods in approval then gestures to a door behind her. “You can use the restroom to change. You will not have much time after we disembark to do so.”

“Got it Maho!” You rush off into the bathroom and change. It’s a bit cramped, but you manage it, re-emerging dressed in Black Forest Sensha-Dō gear.

“You look good.” Maho nods as you reemerge. “Come, we are almost at the field, dismount Werewolf from the Zeppelin and prepare to take your position.

“Yessir!” You remount Werewolf, and your crew follow your lead. You feel the Zeppelin rumble to a stop, then the door behind you opens.

“Alright, driver! Reverse!” You guide your driver out of the Zeppelin then slowly manoeuvre away from it. Black Forest’s home base is busy. Schoolgirls tend to every tank on the field, making sure everyone is in tip top shape. Quite a few of them are in a large tent, going over the same map you did with Maho.

“Move us forward Driver! Find Maho’s tank and position us alongside it.”

“You got it,” he replies. Werewolf rumbles forward, you’re pretty far from the St Gloriana side though there is a neutral spectator zone you could stalk for signs of Rosehip if you wanted to. “Found it.” Your driver pulls up the tank alongside Maho’s. You see her crew, probably the best that Black Forest has to offer going over the tank. They work with such machine-like efficiency it makes you shiver a little bit.

> Take a walk around the battlefield. Fritz does it so maybe it’s useful?

The battlefield is just ahead of you. With nothing better to do, you decide to go for a walk. Leaving your crew to do the final checks, you walk forward, making sure to take note of anything interesting like the south-east approach to the hill you hadn’t knock about before. You still feel like you’re missing something, however. When Fritz does it he always comes back looking like he knows something. You know a lot of things but whatever Fritz finds out when he inspects the battlefield you don’t find out. Maybe next time. What you do find is Assam.

Peaking from behind a bush is a St Gloriana student with possibly the worse camouflage you’ve ever seen someone wear. Especially since she’s still wearing her bright red Sensha-Dō uniform. You slowly loop around behind her as you wrack your brain for a name. Oolong? Jasmine? Assam? It’s probably Assam. You close into a few meters and she still hasn’t noticed you, too focused on Black Forest’s tanks ahead of you. She’s noting down the tanks that Maho is fielding, she pauses for a second when she sees Werewolf but notes it down anyway.

You follow her gaze and see Erika Itsumi walking over to Maho to deliver some kind of file. Miraculously she doesn’t see Assam or yourself.

You get on your knees and shuffle over to Assam. She doesn’t seem to notice you, even though you’re right next to her. You decide to see how far you can push it.

“So what do you think?” You ask casually. Assam doesn’t seem to realise who you are and begins talking as she continues taking notes.

“Well we’re outmatched in terms of firepower,” she grumbles. “The Panthers are more than a match for our Matildas and that Japdpanther is going to be a problem.”

“So how are we going to deal with it?” You continue, curious how far you can go with this.

“We send the cruiser platoon ahead to seize the centre hill before they can. Once we have it Miss Darjeeling can position her Centurion there to attack with impunity.”

“That’s a pretty good plan,” you nod approvingly.

“Thank you! I came up with it... myself.” She trails off as she sees who she was talking too. “Aww crud.”

“So how’s Rosehip?” You ask, grinning at the expression on her face.

“She’s uh, good Erika?” Assam manages to stammer out. “You’re wearing Black Forest uniform.”

“And you’re wearing St Gloriana uniform. Horrible choice for spying by the way, i could see you from far.”

“Ah,” Assam curses under her breath. “So about that plan that I shared with you..”

“What about it?” You ask innocently. “I approve ya know? Sacrificing those Cruiser tanks to get the high ground for the Centurion? That’s smart.”

“Could you uh forget about what I told you?” She asks. “Miss Darjeeling would be very cross if she found out...”

>Smile and walk away without saying anything. Tell Maho.

“Erika...” Assam trails off. You say nothing, continuing to smile at her. “C’mon...”

You slowly and deliberately stand, purposely saying nothing to Assam.

“Erika..” she pleads again. “What about Rosehip?”

“Say hi to her for me,” you say as you stand. You brush your skirt down and begin walking back towards Maho.

“Erika?” Maho asks as you approach. “Can I help you with something? We don’t have long till the match is scheduled to start.”

“We have a spy,” you say.

“Where.” Maho immediately begins scanning the direction you came from. It seems however that Assam left already.

“She’s gone,” you reply. “But I got some information out of her.”

Maho pulls out a map and throws it to you. “Explain.”

“With pleasure.” You proceed to tell Maho exactly what Assam accidentally told you. Maho nods along, making markings on the map as you explain the plan for the Cruisers to seize the hill.

“It’s a decent plan,” Maho murmurs as she thinks it through. “They can’t change it because whoever controls the hill controls the match but we can’t afford to let the Centurion get there either.” She hums and examines the map again before drawing some more symbols onto it. “Vice-Commander Itsumi and the other Tiger II will be attached to Nibelung 1 in order to assist in the breakthrough, yourself and Panther 1 will be attached to the eastern flank.”

“That means one flank won’t have a commander,” you point out.

“Then would you like to do it?” Maho asks. “If you’re anything like your brother it should be child’s play.”

> “Hell, Frickin yeah.”

“I thought you’d say something like that,” Maho muses with a smile. “Head down to J5 and meet up with Nibelung 2, your objective is to halt any advance from the south-east in order to ensure the fight for the hill is not interrupted or, destroy the enemy force that attempts to do so, can I trust you to accomplish that?”

“Yes ma’am!” You reply enthusiastically, throwing up a textbook Bundeswehr salute. That gets a smile from Maho who pats your head, knocking your new Black Forest cap off your head.

“Hey!” You exclaim indignantly, as you bed over to grab your hat.

“Oops,” Maho says, showing no remorse. You jump off Maho’s tank and march towards yours past a very jealous looking Erika Itsumi.

A short tank ride later, you’re at J5 with your new command.

“All tanks, this is Nibelung actual, check-in.” You hear Maho’s voice crackle over the radio.

“Nibelung 1-2, checking in,” you hear Big Erika say.

“Nibelung 2-1, checking in,” Koume’s voice crackles through the radio. You clear your throat then pinch the throat mic.

“Nibelung 3-1, checking in,” you say. The rest of the tanks check-in. As they finish, you see the flare signalling the start of the match.

“Nibelung 3, this is Nibelung 3-1,” you begin into the platoon radio. “Let’s advance east to J9, we can use the high ground for a range advantage over any tanks trying to reinforce the hill.”

“Yes ma’am,” comes the chorused replies of the three Panther commanders under your command. It’s… weird to have them replying like that but you brush it out of your mind. You switch to the general frequency and begin speaking. “Nibelung actual, this is Nibelung 3-1, requesting tank destroyer support.”

“Can’t handle it yourself?” You hear Erika snark.

“Granted,” Maho replies, ignoring Erika’s remark. “Nibelung 4-3 will detach to assist you.”

“Appreciated, Nibelung 4-3, advance to J6 and prepare to give fire support.”

“Roger that,” comes 4-3’s reply. You begin cruising out towards the high ground. It’s not long before contact reports start coming in.

“Cruiser tanks have reached the hill, unable to elevate gun to engage.”

“Line of Matildas advancing to C5!”

You look out your own turret and sure enough, you also see a Churchill and four Matildas closing on Nibelung 1 in formation.

“Matildas and a Churchill headed south-west at F8.” You report. Your orders are to stop them interfering with the hill team at all costs…

>Take a shot at the Churchill, order the Panthers and TD to move to either take advantage of the Brits turning to meet you or to block their advance if they ignore you.

“Nibelung 3, 4-3, this is 3-1!” You shout over the radio. “I am engaging the enemy force! If they turn to face me, destroy them! If they advance, block them!”

“Yes ma’am,” comes the chorused reply again. You ignore it and focus on your own tank for now.

“Gunner! Target! 11 O’clock! 374 meters!” You shout. “Aim for the Churchill first!”

“On it,” she replies. The advancing infantry tanks have noticed you, slowly rotating their turrets to get a shot at you. As always, you move first.

“Firing!” Your gunner announces, the shot flies forward, and slots itself neatly between the Churchill’s turret and hull. You watch as the turret grinds to a halt before the tank itself stops moving, a small white flag popping out the top.

“Scratch one!” You cheer. The two furthest Matildas continue rumbling past their stricken cousin but the two closest to you begin advancing. You see twin muzzle flashes and duck back into your turret.

PING PING

You climb back out and see where the shells had impacted. No damage inflicted. Before you give your next set of orders, you take a moment to listen to the radio. Nibelung 2 has been savaged. The Cruisers on the hill have shown exactly why it’s the most important hill on the field, using their position to assist in the destruction of three Panthers, leaving Koume alone. It wasn’t without cost however, the Cromwell got knocked out, and one Crusader’s gun exploded. Koume and her Panthers also managed to destroy a Matilda and damage several others before being mauled.

“3-1, this is 4-3,” your tank destroyer announces. “Would you prefer I focus on the flanking Matildas or the ones attacking you?”

“3-1, 3-2,” your ‘Platoon Sergeant’ also chips in. “Shall we block the Matildas heading towards the centre force or try to flank them?”

You can’t help but sigh, for as good as they are at Tankery they’re about as bright as rocks when it comes to thinking independently.

“4-3, focus on the flanking Matildas!” You shout, “Nibelung 3! Find a flanking position and open fire!”

‘Yes ma’am’ they chorus again. They immediately begin moving as assigned, the tank destroyer climbs the nearby hill and the Panthers begin moving forward to get a firing solution on the Matildas heading for the flag tank.

“Driver! On that hill!” You order. Werewolf growls as he climbs the hill, easily scaling the slope. You take a look out towards the battlefield and don’t like what you can see.

The two flanking Matildas are closing on the centre team. You also see the Crusader from the hill, a familiar pink mop of hair sticking out of the turret, zipping down the south-eastern slope of the main hill, sweeping towards the back of Nibelung 1. The Matildas from the north have also advanced towards Nibelung 1, Maho having to move forward to stop the tanks on the hill being able to fire down.

The Tiger IIs are shielding Maho’s Tiger, but given threats are closing from all sides, you don’t know how long they’ll last…

> Aim for one of the flanking Matildas
> Attack the advancing Matildas
> Attack the Crusader

“4-3! The Crusader!” You shout into the microphone. You get no reply for a moment before the JagdPanzer replies with the bark of its gun. The Crusader fires at the same time, though not at the JagdPanzer.

The shots hit simultaneously, the Crusader hitting the back of a Tiger II, knocking it out and the JagdPanzer’s shell wrecking the side of the Crusader, putting it out of action.

“Nibelung 3! Deal with the advancing tanks!” You order before switching back to the intercom. “Gunner! The flanking Matildas!”

“Up!” Your loader shouts as the next shell is loaded. Your gunner takes a second to aim.

“Firing,” she announces calmly. You watch the shell streak forward and destroy the forward Matilda. Simultaneously, the Panthers under your command destroy one of the advancing Matildas.

“Nice job!” You shout. Unfortunately, it’s not without consequence. One of your Panthers is knocked out by the Matilda that’s pushing for the centre team. The centre is a clusterfuck. All four Matildas that attacked Koume get knocked out by a combination of her remaing Panthers and Erika’s Tiger IIs. Maho easily dispatches another Matilda as she storms the hill towards Darjeeling. Darjeeling also gets hit, taking a shell from the JagdPanther before sending one back.

“4-3! The flanking Matilda!” You order before switching to the intercom. “Driver! As fast as you can towards the hill! We have a Centurion to kill!”

“Yessir!” He replies enthusiastically. He guns Werewolf’s engine; it whirs and roars moving you far faster than a tank should move.

“Nibelung 3! Follow me to the hill!” You order into the radio. There’s a confused silence before you get a reply.

“What about the remaining Matilda?” One asks. You grin and cock the MG mounted.

“What about them?”

You let rip at the Matilda as you pass it. Your shots pierce an external fuel tank and as you zip past you feel the heat of a massive explosion. You look behind and see the turret still turning. It’s not knocked out, but the crew is suitably shook.

As you start climbing the hill, you draw your sword from its scabbard.

“Like Fritz before us, we slay a Centurion! Forward!” Werewolf seems to howl in approval. You crest the ridge and see the Centurion in front of you, gun pointed straight at you. Maho and Erika are on the other side, Erika ramming a Matilda out of the way to advance.

> Let Maho kill the Centurion, kill the supporting Matilda that's left.

You're tempted to take out the Centurion, but you quickly decide that since it’s not really your victory it’s better to leave it for Maho.

“Gunner! Traverse right! Take out that Matilda!” You order. Your gunner hesitates, but complies, swivelling the gun towards the Matilda. “Fire when ready.” You give the order and sit back, usually, you’d be more alarmed but the Centurion isn’t in a position to fire on you and after being punted by Big Erika’s Tiger neither is the Matilda. You watch the shell from Werewolf’s gun rocket forward, knocking out the Matilda seconds before Big Erika could fire. You get a couple of angry hand gestures in response but you ignore them in favour of kicking back and pulling out a stick of gum.

“The match is over! Black Forest Girls Academy wins!”

The announcement plays over both your radio and the loudspeakers across the field.

“Driver, the Centurion please,” you drawl into the mic. Werewolf rumbles forth, slowly approaching the battered Centurion. Minutes after you pull up next to it a slightly battered Darjeeling and an equally frazzled Orange Pekoe emerge from the top of the tank.

“Well Commander Hermann, I suppose congratulations are in order. That’s the third time I’ve been beaten by a Hermann.”

“Eh, most tankers in Japan have gotten used to it,” you shrug dismissively. “And those that haven’t will soon.” Darjeeling laughs elegantly at that.

“Well as they say young Commander Hermann, Winning provides happiness, but losing provides wisdom.”

“That’s Neil Patel,” Orange Pekoe chips in.

> ”You must be very wise then.”

Orange Pekoe’s usually refined composure breaks, immediately letting out a snort of laughter. She covers her mouth as soon as it happens and quickly ducks inside the tank so she isn’t seen losing her composure in public, but the damage has already been done. Darjeeling is no better, and she has to take a minute to visibly compose herself before she starts talking.

“I suppose I walked into that one,” Darjeeling sighs. “You really are different from your brother.”

“And you aren’t different from any siblings that you have?” You counter. Darjeeling chuckles, putting up a hand in surrender. The other holding a teacup that wasn’t there are second ago.

“Fair enough young Commander Hermann, I shall treat more than an extension of your brother, wisdom dictates it for the next engagement.’

“Okay, but it still won’t help you,” you shrug. “I’m going to see Rosehip now.”

“By all means,” Darjeeling shrugs, pointing south. “Have fun.”

> Find your BEST BUD Rosehip

You dismount from Werewolf and begin heading south towards where you last saw Rosehip’s Crusader. Sure enough, there stands Rosehip. She looks just as exuberant as usual despite her clothes being slightly rumpled from both the high speed and her tank getting slapped by your tank destroyer friend.

“Hey! Rosie!” You shout. Rosehip immediately turns, spots you and breaks out into a sprint.

“Erika! What a good match desu waaa!” She shouts as she sprints over. The distance closes, and she shows no sign of stopping.

50m.

It’s only when she gets three meters away that she begins slowing down, power sliding to a stop several meters behind you.

“Erika! I am here!” She shouts again, panting from her run.

>Hug the Rosehip and try to get it into her head she’ll hurt herself if she keeps running around like that

“Rosehip!” You immediately hug the slightly frazzled speedster. “You were so fast today!”

“Thank you, Erika! I live for speed!” Rosehip replies, returning your hug.

“You should be more careful though,” you murmur as you pull back. “You could hurt yourself by going to fast.”

“I’m sorry Erika but I could never do that! I live for speed, for that rush of adrenaline as one’s tank picks up speed! To be injured in the face of doing what I love is no sacrifice at all to me!”

“Well, it would suck for me,” you pout. “And what about your other friends?” She pauses to think about that for a minute.

“Well Miss Darjeeling does say to slow down too…” she mumbles. “Maybe I can be slightly more careful…”

“Definitely!” You agree enthusiastically. “The way you came down that hill and nailed the Tiger II was epic! But it would’ve been epicer if you’d paid attention to your surroundings!”

You and Rosehip break out into a discussion of the match. You both agree the fight over the hill was probably the best bit though Rosehip specifically thinks her drifting to avoid a tank destroyer shell was the highlight. You of course disagree.

“Oi! Pipsqueak!” A voice cuts in. You turn and see Big Erika standing there arms crossed. “If you’re done fraternising, we have to go. “We’ll head back to Black Forest first then drop you to Ōoarai.”

You quickly say goodbye to Rosehip and jog over to Big Erika.

“We’re headed back to Black Forest aboard a train.” She says. “Just follow me or any Black Forest student and you’ll get there fine. Any questions?”

> ”The way you rammed that Matilda was EPIC! We need to get you a sword! Erika Sword Ramming Club!”

“Eh?” She looks confused for a second before she realises what you’re saying. “Oh, err thank you? It wasn’t as impressive as yours though, you rammed a tank that was almost the same weight, but I’m double a Matilda.”

“But still!” You argue. “The way you sent it flying and set me up was awesome.” You pull out your sword and thrust the air a couple of times. “We could be a duo! The Gemini Erikas!”

“I don’t know about that,” she says, carefully pushing your sword down. “Let’s head for the train.” The two of you walk to the train, chatting the whole way, far more amicably than you’ve been with her before. Big Erika splits off as you reach the train, likely headed to find Maho.

“Oh, by the way, Hermann,” she says over her shoulder. “Your command took the least casualties, well done.” She then walks away before you can say anything back to her.

> Try to find Koume

You hop onto the train and have a look down the carriage. Given the amount of Black Forest students, there are quite a few carriages. However, it seems that by some stroke of luck you’re in the same carriage as Koume.

“Koume!” You cheer when you see her. She looks up when she hears you and returns your smile.

“Erika!” She stands and you crash into her with a hug. “You did so well! Those Matildas didn’t stand a chance against you!”

“And a Churchill!”

“And a Churchill,” Koume corrects herself. You take a seat opposite her as the train starts to move. “People are talking you know? Some think you’re going to join Black Forest.”

“Really?” You ask. You think about it for a second and nod your head. “Well to be fair, I was wearing a Black Forest uniform during the match.”

“This got drawn up in anticipation,” Koume hands over a picture of what seems to be Werewolf but with Black Forest markings instead of Ōoarai ones.

> Ask Werewolf first
> “Let’s do it, I want to see Fritz’s head explode.”

“Sounds great! I’ll tell the girls at the yard to get the paint ready.” Koume giggles. “I’ve not seen Fritz angry in years.”

“Not since we almost dropped Werewolf’s turret on him in Münster,” you muse. “Tell them to hold their horses though, I want a chance to visualise how it’ll look first.”

“Sure,” Koume nods. She sends another text to who you assume is Black Forest’s maintenance team. “They’ll wait till you give them the go-ahead.”

“Good!” You reply. Yourself and Koume fall into casual conversation.

About an hour later, you arrive at the port. The tanks are unpacked with machine-like efficiency, all fifteen of them being aboard within an hour. Yourself and Koume head straight for the tank garages. It’s abuzz with activity, schoolgirls swarming each of the tanks – removing damaged parts and replacing them; cleaning gun barrels and tracks and doing routine maintenance. You look for Werewolf and find him sitting in the open.

“Well, what do you think?” Koume asks as you approach Werewolf. You place your hand on his side and the tank quickly comes to life. He feels satisfied, and it’s rubbing off on you. You decide to just try thinking your conversation to him. It’s different, and weird compared to just talking to him normally. Especially when you have to make it look like you’re inspecting him for those watching on. Eventually, you manage to get across what you’re trying to do. Werewolf’s not too happy about changing camo but you manage to negotiate him down to a similar red colour that Black Forest’s maintenance team are able to do.

Several hours later, the painting is complete. Werewolf is not a dusty red colour with the Black Forest symbol painted on him at several points. It is then that Maho decides to make an appearance.

“Erika, you’re still…here?” She trails off as she sees Werewolf’s new paint job. “What’s the meaning of this?”

“We’re pranking Fritz,” you explain. “I want to take a picture of his face when he sees the new paint job.”

“I see,” Maho replies. She walks forward till she’s in front of Werewolf and casts a critical eye over him. She then does something very unexpected and picks up a paintbrush. She dips it in a nearby tin of white paint and elegantly signs her name on the front. “Much better.” She declares. She puts the brush down then walks off towards the garage. “Send me the pictures!”

“I will!” You shout back. “Oh man, this is going to be great.”

“Agreed,” Koume nods next to you.

Once the paint is dry, you load the tank up onto the Zeppelin again. Your crew takes one look at the tank and distances themselves from you, not eager to get caught in the crossfire. It doesn’t take long to reach Ōoarai and once you’re disembarked, Erika and Koume leave wishing you well in dealing with Fritz. Your crew also make themselves scarce.

“Hey! Erika!” You hear from the warehouse. You turn and see Fritz exiting. “We saw your match! Nice work han-“ You turn and see him staring at Werewolf. His crew follow him out and their reactions ranged from shock to horror to finding it hilarious. You look back to Fritz who’s staring at Werewolf, his left eye twitching as he does.

His head turns unnaturally fast to you as you say it, eyes still twitching.

“You’re bluffing,” he replies, dangerously calm. “You never mentioned this before.”

“I wanted it to be a surprise,” you bullshit even harder. “Especially since I knew you’d take it like this.” His face is twitching even harder. If you didn’t know better you’d say he’s having a stroke. You see your opportunity and you take it

You quickly pull out your phone and take a picture of Fritz. It’s perfect, his left eye mid twitch and his hands curled up as if he’s trying to strangle the air. Of course, that gives it away and his eyes narrow.

“You!” He shouts, breaking out into a run towards you. You also break out into a sprint. You reckon at this time Yuzu is likely in the warehouse along with the rest of the club and if you can make it to her you might survive.

You don’t get very far. You make it to the entrance before Fritz catches up with you.

“Oi!” You hear from very close behind you. You dive for the ground to try avoiding the hand you know is coming but Fritz manages to grab the back of your neck. He hauls you up and over his shoulder.

“Hey! Put me down!” You shout, slamming his back with your hands. It’s ineffectual.

“Max! Leo! Get me paint!” You order. “Werewolf’s old colours.”

“You’re going to make me paint it?” You pout. You feel his head bob in agreement.

“Sure am.”

“Aw crud.”

It takes hours by yourself, but by the end of the day, it’s done. The Black Forest symbols are covered, and Werewolf has his old camo pattern back.

“Happy now?” You ask Fritz who’s sitting in a garden chair watching you.

“Sure am!” He replies happily. “Good job Erika.” With an exaggerated moan, you wander over to him and collapse onto him. “And good job with the match too.” He says quietly. You can only mumble in response.

Friday 27th July (Day 111)

You wake up early that morning given you have a duel to deal with. Yesterday you hadn’t been able to do much planning given you were busy watching Erika fight in the semi-finals. Of course, she was fighting for Black Forest who you’ll be fighting today. Fun. Erika is still asleep, and you decide to let her do so given she had an exhausting day having to both fight a full battle and repaint Werewolf by herself. You use the bathroom and head into your living room/kitchen.

As you’re making breakfast, your phone rings. You check the caller ID and see it’s Anzu.

“Hey Prez,” you ask as you cook some eggs. “What’s cooking?”

“Shouldn’t I be asking you that?” She quips. “I need to know who you’re taking to the duel today, we’re against Black Forest right?”

“We are,” you reply.

>> Anglerfish Team (Pz IV)
>> Leopon (Tiger P)
>> Duck (Comet)

“I’ll take Anglerfish, Leopon and Duck teams,” you say to Anzu. You hear the scratching of a pen as you say it.

“I’ll have them here, ready to go as soon as morning practice starts.” She promises. “See you soon Fritz.”

“See ya, Prez,” you reply. She hangs up and you put the phone down, returning to breakfast.

“Aaaah,” you hear a yawn behind you. “G’ morning Fritz.”

“Morning Erika,” you reply. “Have a nice nap?”

“Yeahhhh,” she yawns back in response. “We got a fight?”

“Sure do, Black Forest.” You tip the eggs and some cold cuts onto a couple plates. You hand one to her and take a seat opposite her on the table.

“Can I fight?” She asks hopefully.

“No.” You reply, laughing at her deadpan. “Recover from your fight yesterday first.”

“M’kay,” she grumbles but accepts it nonetheless. The two of you eat in relative silence. Once you’re done, you get changed and the two of you head for the warehouses.

When you arrive, the three teams you selected are all ready to go. Their tanks are already loaded onto the transporter. All you have to do is hop into the cabin.

“Hey, Fritz!” Saori cheers when she sees you. “How are you?”

“I’m well,” you reply with a smile. “You all ready to fight Black Forest?”

“We’ll take them out with a well-placed spike!” Noriko shouts.

“We’re ready to drift circles around them,” Nakajima says confidently.

“We’ll take out any foe!” Yukari adds enthusiastically. You look around the very excited cabin and nod.

“I suppose we are ready.”

“You think?” Mako snipes. You ignore it and relax into your seat.

“Let’s get this show on the road…”

Less than an hour later, you’ve arrived back at the field. It still bears the marks of last time’s battles.

The transporter pulls to a stop in Ōoarai’s designated rendezvous point. You and the various tank crews dismount and they scramble to begin betting their tanks down.

You look to the north of you. You see Black Forest also dismounting their tanks.

“A Jagdpanther, a Panther and a JagdPanzer IV,” Miho says, coming to a halt next to you. “What do you think?”

> “I reckon Duck Team is crazy enough to win this.” [Send Duck team]

“Ey?” You ask. “Us?” You’re Noriko Isobe, Commander of Duck team and Captain of the volleyball club.

“Yep,” Fritz replies. “I can’t think of a better team to do it.”

“We’ll prove you, right Commander!” Taeko promises.

“We’ll block anything they send our way!” Akebi chips in.

“Right! We’ll take them down with a well places spike!” You shout. “Won’t we girls!?”

Your crew roars their approval and Commander Hermann seems satisfied.

“I knew you’d be up to the job,” he says, nodding your approval. “I’ll go submit our choice.” He walks over to the judge and speaks to her for a second. He then turns right around and returns to you. “You’re against a Jagdpanther, not an easy one but I reckon you can take them.”

“Jagdpanther? Which one’s that?” Akebi asks.

“It’s like a Panther but a Tank Destroyer,” Shinobu says helpfully.

“Either way, we’ll hit them with a knuckle serve, double block anything they send our way then spike it!”

“Alright Captain!” Akebi cheers. Shinobu just sighs and facepalms.

With selection done, you head for your tank and a few moments later you’re at the starting point.

“Captain! The battle has started!” Taeko informs you helpfully. You look at the map, then discard it. You’re not a thinker! You’re a do-er!

> Go straight for the spike! (Charge through the town/Orange)

“Let’s go straight for the spike ladies!” You order enthusiastically. To any outsider your orders may have seemed like gibberish but to your team who you’d fought and volleyball-ed alongside for years they were precise instructions on what to do.

“Aye Captain!” Your teammates reply. Shinobu guns the engine, your new tank roaring forward at speeds your old one couldn’t hope to match despite what you were able to do with it.

You rumble into town, passing through the outskirts as the buildings start getting thicker.

“No sign of the enemy, Captain!” Taeko shouts peeking out of her hatch.

“Maybe they’re hiding in one of the buildings?” You ask, scanning them. You see nothing, but who knows what could be lurking behind every corner.

“I don’t think they’re fast enough for that, Captain,” Shinobu sighs. “We’re a lot faster than they are and we’re barely in the town.”

“Of course!” You scoff. “Then let’s…
