It was a mistake. Remember when you responded to a message board post that said, “Reply to this and you will wake up as a little girl”? No surprise it didn’t work, and thank god because it would’ve been one hell of a thing to explain. So you curse, why did it work when they switched the words “as a little girl” with “inside a game”?Whoever made this “game” must have undoubtedly crawled out of Satan’s asshole. All they did was slap an interface on real life and made you hallucinate out of your mind. Indistinguishable from a bad trip, NPCs come in all shapes and forms, ranging from an amorphous floating light to your friendly neighborhood skeleton man. Lately, you can’t tell the difference between reality and fantasy. Maybe the system’s getting smarter. What was the first thing you did? Check your stats obviously. It was shamefully subpar unsurprisingly. No mana, single digit health, Level 1, and every stat was barely above a 0 except for your one saving grace.>[Strength] As much of a dork you are, you like to keep yourself in shape. +5 to strength and endurance rolls.>[Dexterity] Years of gaming have honed your reflexes and coordination to a mild degree. +5 to combat and precision rolls.>[Intelligence] Not born a genius, but you enjoy learning and sharpening your mind. +5 to wisdom and perception rolls.>[Luck] The goddess of Luck smiles upon you. That’s not on your mind right now however, but rather someone yelling in your ear.“WAKE UP, RISE AND SHINE! COME ON, GET YOUR-“You get up and slam the alarm clock as it screams at you. You wish someone put quest markers in here.Your parents have already left for work. Sitting down alone, you pour yourself a bowl of cereal. You contemplate on how it’s been a month and you haven’t finished a single quest.A knock on the door interrupts your thoughts. It’s probably your best friend here to get you.“Max! You get up, mouth still full, and open the door. Your friend Anastasia is there, her black shoulder-length hair shining as usual. She’s the only person in this world that you’ve told about your “ability,” but she’s 100% sure you’re going to class everyday high as a kite.“You’re going to be late, let’s go!” she says.“Aw who cares. It’s just going to be another substitute and we’re just going to read out of the book again.”“When did you become a bad boy?” she jokes.“Yeah, yeah, I’ll be out later.”“Don’t mind me if I help myself to your fridge.”Waving her off, you go to your bathroom. Looking at the mirror, you see yourself and your uncut hair. You look too young to be in your last year of high school. You turn off the shower and grab a towel to cover yourself with. Peeking out the curtain, you find that your shower is now on one end of a pub while the door is on the other. This is certainly… new. There’s a pool table on the right, currently being set up by a bunch of hulking Russian men. They are absolutely ripped, their muscles glistening in the shitty dying incandescent lights. One of them gives a little wave to you.A group of frail old ladies sit at a circular table drinking vodka, where one of them pats the empty chair next to her motioning for you to come over. There’s a revolver on the table with a single bullet lying nearby.“Come, play vit us!” one of them says.Out of all the things you’d expect to be doing in the morning, this is not one of them. You find that usually they’ll ignore you if they think you can’t see them. Anastasia’s got a theory swirling around her head where you’re actually seeing the 4th dimension or some equally crazy thing, but the what is less important than the how.Walking up to the school entrance, you find that the teachers are still there. Still on strike, ever since the incident a while back. You can’t be bothered right now, but this time old Mr. Hill has decided it was a good idea to go absolutely nuts on a kid.“Oh you kids don’t even care about education these days, showing up this late. Anastasia quickly follows you, hiding behind you.“I think he somehow likes you even less now,” she notes.“Us. And it’s not like he’s coming back anytime soon.”Arriving to class an hour late, you get into class for the sub to inform you there’s a new transfer student. Dropping your bag down, you sit and notice that the empty seat next to you has been filled. The transfer student seems to be popular, having already made a few friends. You don’t know they’re seeing, but you’re sure it’s not what you’re seeing. Curved horns rise out of her head, fitting her red-scaled dragon head that sticks out of her blouse. You stretch out your legs as you take your last bite of toast. It’s early in the morning, an hour of the day you’d normally be asleep during. Really, you’re just happy you weren’t woken up by your alarm clock.“I was considering dragging your body out of my house and dumping it across the street, yknow,” says Anastasia, sipping orange juice. Two chicks are jumping around on a table, chirping away. “Alright. Do it,” you affirm.Every student that hasn’t noticed Ethan pulling out a can opener on the teacher’s desk now has. While a handful curious spectators watch from a close distance, everyone else has pretty much left the room or scrambled to the back. As soon the slightest bit was opened, the can pops a bit and a pungent smell floods the room.“Oh my god get that out of here!”“I’m fucking leaving, forget this.”While more terrified students scram, you brace yourself as the indescribable stench of rot and sewer smash into your face like an 18 wheeler.Ethan offers you a plastic fork. You take it, nervously. Slowly, you skewer a slimy chunk of fish and lift it, gradually raising it into your mouth. Bad idea.Quest Failed!Fifteen minutes later, you stand outside washing your mouth out with your water bottle. The entire section of the school was evacuated because some jackass thought it would be funny to kick it down the hallway. Some of the gunk must’ve gotten on you because you still smell the fish. It would explain why everyone’s staying far away.Well. >Explore the game interface, maybe you can figure something out.
Stretching for a bit, you mess with your interface. You plan a route to the park nearby, where you used to jog. Not that you kept up with it, since you pretty much slacked off after a week. You begin jogging, phone out to try to look as less psycho as possible.Opening new windows in the interface is hard. It’s more of a will-it-into-existence type of deal, and everything is vague and unforgiving for a beginner like you. You do find a couple of things, however. There’s some kind of lock preventing you from messing with things too far ahead of your level. Another barrier requires the completion of the tutorial. The shop is like some astral Amazon, shipping to you in some unspecified method, but the location is always exactly on you. You’re not sure how they deliver abilities, but you just wave it off as weird magic business. You also discover a search bar hiding. Digging around, you find the 25 credits you got can’t buy much, but you can get some funky spirit foodstuffs. As for the abilities, you manage to see that there are class branches and specialization further on. You’re not sure what practical use there is for flaming gunswords or summoning mana leeches, but they’re there. They aren’t going to help you pass an exam on calculus, that’s for sure. You drop down on a bench in the park, out of breath. You feel pretty good, despite being tired. Soon enough, you get home. It’s your fortress, in a way. NPCs usually never get through the front door, with yesterday and the alarm clock being the few exceptions. Climbing into the shower, you mess with the interface some more to see what you got.Abilities, Shop, Inventory, Stats… huh? Something new appeared next to STR, a progress bar that has been filled one third of the way. You try messing the inventory, trying to put things into thin air. To anybody else, you look hilarious right now. There’s currently 2 slots available, the rest locked away for one reason or another. Suddenly while you’re mashing the bar of soap in a slot, it fits in. Huh. You try to get it out… and nothing. As for improving yourself, it looks like the only methods you see so far is to either buy it with money or level up.Afterwards, you notice someone texted you. It’s Anastasia. “Hey come back to the school.”“What’s going on? They cleaned up?”“Got a surprise.”Oh boy. You toss out the stained pair of jeans as you leave the house. Yeah you’re not wearing that ever again. With nothing better to do, you walk toward the school again.“Please, help someone me!” you hear someone squeak, the sound coming from an alley way.You take a look, and you find an abnormally well-dressed rat gesturing for you to come as he runs off.>Time for a detour.>Let’s not get mixed up in this.

You’d rather not go down this rabbit hole. Or rat, in this case. You hear a little “Please!” as you walk past.“Where are you?” you text back.“Third floor. You know that unused room in the back?”You type something, but decided to send an “k” instead. When you’re climbing the main staircase and pass by the second floor, the slight smell of the rotten fish is still there. Reaching the third, you walk down the hallway to the storage room, three people there waiting for you.“Took you long enough,” complains Ethan, barely reeking.“Max, I didn’t know you can see ghosts,” adds Melanie.“What’s this?” you ask Anastasia.“Thought you’d might be interested.”Ethan, interjecting, “Huh? Max, I thought you were all for this? Anastasia?”She nervously laughs, “It was Ethan’s idea, thought it would fit you.”“Couldn’t get the room without Melanie’s help though, she’s got a silver tongue.”“Oh, it was nothing. Looks like you got dragged into this Max, but I hope you’ll stay.” Her dragon head tilts a little, expression still unreadable. “So, welcome to the Paranormal Club!”Ethan tosses you a broom as Anastasia opens the creaks open the door.“Help out, ehn?”“Don’t… we need a fifth member?” you ask.“I put Jay down but it’s not like he’ll know.”“He never even comes to class.”The three enter the room, excited to various degrees. In the center of the room on a table, however, is a fat green marshmallow man, picking his nose. A glowing gem is on his ring finger, with a nice floating arrow pointing at it on top.>Pretend everything is completely, absolutely, 100% normal.>…Transform.>Tell everyone you’ll clean to get them out of the room.>Write-in.
