The phone rings again. You stare at the screen, as if expecting the word "unlisted" to change to a name."Aren't you going to get that?" The cop says."Yeah." You step aside and take the call. There's a moment of silence before the voice on the end says, "Hello?""Yes.""Am I speaking with Mr. Plumb?""Who's this?""I take it that I am. How are you Mr. Plumb? Have you arrived safely to Azalea?""Are you the bastard banging Mr. Yamauchi's wife?"A silence. There is the barely audible sound of a man clearing his throat."I understand my associate was unable to convince you of my terms.""What terms might that be?" "I was told you were fond of games. I, however, am not. Mr. Plumb, you have 48 hours. Either our mutual acquaintance files to null the extension or I find alternative means of paying my very expensive legal fees. There are plenty of things to sell, when one knows where to look and whom to sell it to." There's another silence. Then a new voice."L-Luke?"You feel like throwing up. "Mr. Zinnai?""Don't worry about us Luke. Don't listen to him. Don't--" "I admire the loyalty you inspire, Mr. Plumb. What is your secret?"In the movies, this is the part where the hero always makes some over-the-top, usually gory, vow. I'll pluck your eyes out with thumbscrews or I'll take a cheese grater to your ballsack or, your personal favorite, I'll feed your face to my magikarp. But none of these one-liners come to mind right now, instead you're just trying to keep from fainting."48 hours Mr. Plumb." There's a click and then the line goes dead. You go back to the cop and sit down, as a dull buzzing fills your brain. "Everything alright?" Says the cop.>Tell the truth, everything is not alright. She's wise enough to keep silent, but stops eating just so she can squeeze your hand underneath the table. It's times like these that you feel your poverty the most, for all the things that you can't give your sister, which she surely deserves. The cop stands up, flipping his pad and returning it to front pocket. "I think I've got what I need. As I said, you'll need to stay here until Mr. Shelly wakes up. Once we've taken his statement we'll know how to proceed." He takes out a card from his wallet. The only number you actually remember is Whitney's and you're not even sure she'll be reachable in her little spelunking adventure. And even if you could reach her, it feels wrong somehow to ask for her help. Especially since you haven't yet paid her back for the great balls. There's also Bridget, you could probably reach her through the Goldenrod gym's phone number but as with Whitney, there's a certain sense of shame associated with asking her. You don't think she ever knew about your situation. You want to keep it that way. That leaves just one other person. You don't have her number, but then you don't need it. She's no longer on the active list, but her number is still in the Indigo Plateau directory. You make sure to occupy Rosy with your new Oddish as you run a quick search on the PC. It brings up the name, number and current address. As well as a picture, dated from her Elite Four days, before she had Rosy, maybe even before she met your father. You can see why your father fell for her. The red hair even the glasses--it's all a pale imitation of your mother, his first wife. Just looking at it makes you want to punch the screen. You dial in the number. It rings twice and then someone picks up."Yes?" It's her. You'd recognize that same monotonous voice, almost masculine in its icy indifference, if it were lost in the crowds of Goldenrod rush hour."Lorelei?""This is she. Who is this?""It's your...it's Lucas. Lucas Plumb."She doesn't miss a beat. You don't think she ever has. "I see. What do you want?"You almost hang up right there. No guilt. Not even interest. Not even faked interest. You speak through your teeth. "I need some help.""Money?""A favor."There's a pause. Probably she's considering whether she should just hang up. She doesn't. "What kind of favor?""There's man in the Saffron Maglev Corporation...' You give a rundown of the last few days, leaving out the bits she doesn't need to know. She interrupts you with an occasional question or clarification. She never mentions Rosy. Neither do you."I'll take care of it." It's a banality but in her mouth it's like the word of god. You can hear her already typing away at her PC. As a former Elite Four member and moreover as a certified sociopath, she's bound to have some uncashed blank checks signed by some powerful people. "I don't think that would be a good idea." "She asked about you." You weren't going to tell her that, but it slips out. What is it you want from her? An tearful apology? A mental breakdown? To suddenly start loving her daughter after seven years of absence? If she didn't do it when she was born, why would she start now? But you were the same way, once upon a time. You hated Rosy when she was born. "...I'll call you when its done." The line clicks off. You feel like smashing the phone against the wall. Instead you look at Rosy again, swinging her legs off the end of the chair and humming along to the radio tunes. You relax. Whatever may happen, she still has you. >>3401557>>3401562>>3401573>>3401580>>3401669The slowpoke well is one of the main features of Azalea. Cordoned off from the rest of the town and located near its entrance, it's more of a giant hole, like a quarry, than it is a simple well. Especially since no one actually uses it to draw water. Your memories of the well aren't exactly fond and even after so many years have passed, you feel nervous climbing down the ladder. The well connects to a large cave system, complete with an underground lake. The place has become a tourist attraction, completely open to the public. Work lights on small metal stands that dug into the dirt, provide ample light near the entrance. Parts of the lake have been re-purposed into indoor hot springs. Several slugmas provide the necessary heat and many slowpokes join the other human patrons in enjoying a good soak.Your sister wordlessly begs you to go for a dip, pointing her little arm in the direction of the nearest spring, raising her eyebrows in a question, but you push it down and keep going. "Maybe later." You add. Seeing her deflate like a popped bike tire does terrible things to your heart.A flash of your trainer ID gives you access to the deeper parts of the caves, where other trainers and a few fisherman are hunting for sport. The tour guide mentioned a lower level, accessible only by water, where there are stronger pokemon and trainers. But not having a means to cross the lake it's currently inaccessible. But there are plenty of trainers here on the top level and plenty of pokemon to fight otherwise. With that in mind you start trawling the cave for potential matches. Pretty much anyone you make eye-contact with is game, but not everyone would make for a fair match-up. Most of the trainers here are not going for the league, but instead training for other reasons. One youngster wants to be a cop. Another is looking for a position in Bugsy's gym. "King, I choose you." "Come on out, Butters." You both throw at the same time. >7 vs. DC 9+1 (+1 Aerial advantage): Partial SuccessThe smart thing to do would be to switch King out for Nibbles and make roast butterfree. But there's no need to pull out the ace so early in the game and the whole point of this is to train anyway. By the grin on Chaz's face you'd guess he's feeling pretty good about his odds but, as they say, pride comes before the fall. King is faster than butterfree and gets the jump on him--literally, he collides with butterfree in a flying tackle missing all the vital parts but carrying enough weight and momentum to knock her to the ground. She's not hurt but her wing is bent in a bad angle and she won't be able to fly. In retaliation she releases a close range psychic blast that makes your little nidoran squeal in agony but to his credit, King doesn't budge an inch and keeps the butterfree pinned down beneath his paws.A second blast will definitely take King out and he won't gain any experience if he faints. You could switch over to Nibbles now and finish the job, since King gotten a move in he'll share the experience with Nibbles. But...you also have that potion. "Timeout!" You make the universal sign for a break with your hands. Chaz looks a little confused at first, but then returns his butterfree to its pokeball. "What's up?" "Timeout, I'm gonna use a potion on King.""Alright, remember that I get a free attack. Pew!" He shoots you in the chest with his finger gun. "Right." King is trying to handle the pain like a champion. Beads of sweat run down his face and his eyes are squeezed shut but he doesn't show any signs of quitting. You stroke his face, careful to avoid the poison tipped horn. "Hey boy, it's alright." The potion has two modes of application, a simple spray nozzle and an injection on the bottom. The injection is for internal injuries but should also work as a painkiller to neutralize the psychic attack. In a matter of seconds, your nidoran is back to full fighting capacity. It's like the attack had never happened. Now all you have to do is survive the next one. >Roll 1d6

>>3406529>>3406532>>3406539>BS 10 vs. DC 9: SuccessYour sister gives King a hug (despite your best arguments) before he returns to battle. Chaz hasn't done anything with his butterfree, claiming that he "just ran out of pots", so it's wing is still messed up. Unfortunately his psychic abilities are still full throttle and as soon as battle starts he attempts to blast King with another confusion attack. This time, King is ready. Psychic attacks are technically incorporeal but they still need a stable focus. King ruins this by jumping around in a random pattern, scattering the energy of the attack until it's little more than a slight annoyance. Now for the counterattack.>Scratch the butterfree's eyes out, it won't damage him, but he can't blast what he can't see>Growl at the butterfree to inject fear into its heart (-1 to DC for next two rounds)>Kick the butterfree into submission, even if the close range puts King at risk (-1 BS for next two rounds)
>>3406578>Kick the butterfree into submission, even if the close range puts King at risk (-1 BS for next two rounds)Beat it down
>>3406578>Growl at the butterfree to inject fear into its heart (-1 to DC for next two rounds)
>>3406578>>Growl at the butterfree to inject fear into its heart (-1 to DC for next two rounds)
>BS 10 vs DC 9: SuccessRather than drop immediately into an attack, which would only give the butterfree the opportunity to blast your nidoran at close range, you decide to have nidoran soften her up. King lets loose a low growl that hits the butterfree at a primal level, making her quake in fear and completely messing up her concentration. Chaz seems about ready to switch out, but since the butterfree still hasn't taken any real damage, hesitates to do so. That gives you just the opportunity you need.>Hit her with a leaping tackle>Scratch her eyes out>Kick her into submission>Keep growling and terrifying her

>>3406644>>Hit her with a leaping tackle
>>3406644>Kick her into submission

Hopefully just a temporary delay
I WANNA SAVE FRANKY GOD DAMMIT. DON'T YOU DIE ON ME QM!
>158 replies>page 10It was fun while it lasted
Sorry guys, I'm still alive. I've just been waiting for the thread to die so I can start a new one (since it won't bump any more and its already on page 10). I haven't run partly because I've been busy and partly because I feel like I really messed up the combat system. The current version basically takes away all the tension for me in writing the combat and although I wanted to change it I was afraid that switching it up again might annoy some people so I've been stuck in a kind of limbo Also I'm not sure what to change it to, I want to keep it in the spirit of the games, while also maintaining tension and flexibility, all without having too much number crunching and I'm having trouble reconciling all of that. If anyone has any ideas, I'm definitely open to them. I know the "roll everything first" system was suggested before but I'd prefer to have a more dynamic, play-by-play style mechanic, where you can adjust your strategy on the fly (like in the games).
>>3425945oh that's fine, I'm all for changing the system if you need to. As for the thread, you can just make a new one even if this one is still here, no one cares about that stuff. Anyway good to see you alive OP
>>3425945No worries. You can change it if you want. And good form about waiting on the thread. A lot of people create 2-3 threads when their old thread would still fit in more updates.
>>3425945Why not just make it more narrative? Keep the dice rolls to see how well we do throughout the fight but instead of [x rolls over dc == win. 3 hits and x pokemon is dead] you just write out the combat in a way that flows for you. You can decide when they match is over, when we win or lose based on dice and story telling rather than pure mechanics. Write in some tension, write in some fun and craziness where you see it working etc etcAlso just a note, if you feel the thread is done or that you wont be back for multiple days, it is best to just let us know. Drop a little comment saying the game is paused or you'll see us in the next thread or whatever. People will think you've abandoned the game otherwise since it happens so often with QMs
