Finally after two years in the service of the Dark Queen Quintis you have finally been promoted. No more marching through filthy peasant villages administering the Queen's justice, this is your chance to rise through the ranks of her Majesty's armies and become one of her generals, or so you thought.Being placed in a garrison out in the middle of nowhere wasn't the promotion you had imagined, but after the death of your commander, your rise through the ranks seemed that much more possible. Through your leadership, your garrison holds its ground through an assault and infiltration by rebel forces and manages to capture two of its heroes. After transporting the two of them to the Capital, Queen Quintis decided to promote you to Captain and to add you to her collection of personal agents.Your first mission as an agent of the Queen was quite the ordeal, nearly dying to a shape shifting mage, getting stampeded by a mercenary cavalry charge, and getting shot full of arrows as well as stabbed lot. In the end however you stopped the mercenaries attacking imperial caravans, and uncovered that they had been hired by the the rebels to disrupt trade between imperial, and desert merchants. This is not the end of your troubles however upon returning to the Capital, you find that the rebels weren't just sitting on their hands while you were gone.

For the anon who was asking last thread, magic is not very easy to learn, and even then only those with natural aptitude ever become good at it. While you could learn animal magic eventually, it might take years for you to learn enough to cast a decent spell. You would have to study under a master for a number of years and even then without natural aptitude you will only be able to cast a tier 1 spell at most.applying poisons to your weapon is possible, but you'd have to find an alchemist willing to do so. The selling of poisons is highly regulated under imperial law you see, so only a few alchemists have the means and would be able to sell to you.

>>3287248>“Goodbye Randolf, I wish you luck on your mission, you’re going to need it.”Give him the antidote recipe we used on Needle against the assassin's poison.Set up an ambush to intercep some of the warriors going to the ritual site so we can get a sample of their poison and prepare the antidote, we attack after we have it or the ritual day comes around, whatever comes first.I prefer during the day but we can do it at night if we have to due to the antidote.

Be careful when you use it though, it has some nasty side effects.”“Thank you Captain. Now if you’ll excuse me I’ve got another goodbye to say.” With that Randolf slides past you and sits down next to Mildri. At that same moment Selenas walks into the inn. She jumps slightly at the sight of you, but she takes a breath and steels herself as she approaches you.“I don’t want to kill my friends,” she says, keeping her voice steady “But if I don’t you and hundreds more could die. You barrel through greenery at break neck speed, she wouldn’t have called you if her situation wasn’t dire, you can’t lose her, not now, not when you were so close.Shouting at the top of her lungs, Selenas can only hope that you arrive in time as the warrior presses in on her again. The warrior is fast, ferocious and unrelenting as he attacks again and again, wearing Selenas down until, there and opening. Striking fast, the warrior’s attack slips through Selenas’s guard driving right for her heart. You emerge through the brush just in time to see the spear thrust into Selenas’s chest, at that exact moment you reach out and focus harder than you’d ever done before and shout “STOP!” The warrior’s spear stops just short of her heart, a barrier erupts from around Selenas shoving the warrior back and away from her. That action was not without cost however, searing pain erupts in your own heart as the rings magic takes its toll. Fighting through the pain you step in between Selenas, and the recovering warrior. “I’m here,” you say over your shoulder at Selenas who had collapsed on to the ground and who’s only sign of life was the rise and fall of her chest. >>3296298Hey who wants to be a bandit. Seriously though let's be that Bandit guy from the last thread. I'm pretty sure the lands that the Rebellion holds are pretty Lawless.
>>3296313Nah no waiting by her side. We’ll see her when she gets up but we need to spend more time with Mildri. Mildri took out multiple Swampy Bois. Selenas couldn’t even get 1. It’s clear who’s better.

>>3296792We better give single combat some space, we usually fare better in groups and we have the option to fall back with backup, we were not smart here, a single lucky bandit can kill us like it was shown multiple times
>>3296298It is in that moment of rage that your opponent makes his greatest error, letting his blow through your guard, his spear glances off your armor as you swipe upward with your glaive carving through his abdomen and up into his chest. Pulling your weapon free you strike the back of the man’s knee, forcing him down. Then with a single slash, you part the warrior’s head from his shoulders and watch as his body twitches and falls into the grass.Taking a breath you let some of your adrenaline drain away before heading over to check on Selenas. While she was still breathing, she was still unconscious and in bad shape, with two large punctures wounds, one in her abdomen and the other in her chest. Doing what you could, you bind her wounds closed and pick her up carrying her back to the road and your horses. As you make it back onto the road, you find Mildri collecting what looked like small water skins from the fallen swamp warriors. “I’ve got the poi-” Mildri stops mid-sentence as soon as she realizes who you’re carrying “What happened is she alright?”“She’s alive, one of the swamp warriors gave her some trouble though, she should be fine given so-” As you say those words, Selenas convulses in your arms. Twitching and shaking, Selenas’s breathing becomes ragged and wheezing. Having trouble holding on to her, you set her on the ground.“What’s wrong with her?” Mildri asks bending down to examine Selenas.“I don’t know she was fine just a moment ago I don’t know what-” as your eyes catch on the poison skins in Mildri’s arms you realized the problem. “It’s the poison. She was stabbed by one of the swamp people. His weapon must have been poisoned.”“What do we do, we don’t have an antidote for the poison yet?”Several options leap to the front of your mind as you scramble for ideas. You could try to brew some of your detox tea, but you’d have to find the ingredients first and even after that, you’d have to light a fire which would paint a rather large target out here at night. You could give her a healing potion and hope that it would fight the poison long enough that the toxin would pass out of her, or you could ride out of here and just hope that she holds on long enough to get back to the Capital.>Brew the detox tea.>Give her a healing potion.>Hurry back to the Capital as fast as you can.>[Write In]

When you arrive you find that Mildri had finished collecting a decent amount of burnable fire wood. You quickly check Selenas’s condition to find that she had gotten much worse since you’d left. She was sweating profusely, shaking uncontrollably, and fighting for every ounce of air she drew in. Unstoppering a healing potion, you pour the liquid into her mouth which she swallows. The effects are almost immediate, as she settles down and her breathing becomes easier. Having stabilized Selenas, you turn back to making the detox tea. Cutting off, grinding up, and mashing the ingredients, you prepare the herbs while Mildri starts a fire and fetches a small cooking pot from your horse and boils some water. While you are waiting for water to boil, you can see torch light in the distance and growing closer every second. The tea wasn’t ready yet and it didn’t look like it would be ready by the time whoever was coming would arrive. You travel what you assume to be half way to the Capital, before your pursuers torch light dies out behind you. Even then you continue further down the road to be sure they won’t see your fire light as you resume making your tea. The ride had not done any favors for Selenas’s condition. She was convulsing again and her breathing sounded worse than ever, you untie her from the saddle and lay her on the ground. While the tea warms, you have Mildri remove Selenas’s armor and weapons so as not to get them dirty when the tea began its work. Carefully scooping up the hot tea into a cup you bring it over to Selenas. She was barely conscious now, and at one whiff of the rather pungent tea Selenas turns her head away from the cup.“It doesn’t smell nice, it won’t taste nice, it’s going make you feel and do some rather unpleasant things, but this tea going to save your life so open up,” You growl. Selenas reluctantly turns her head back to you and takes a sip of the liquid. She almost immediately spits it out, but restrains herself and swallows the tea. You have her finish the whole cup before you let her rest again. Moments later, you hear Selenas retching as the tea takes effect. While Selenas was purging herself of the toxin, you take stock of your current situation. You had obtained more poison than you probably need, Selenas was stable now and should be ready to move in a few hours, and the sun was starting breach the horizon bringing an end to this horrible night. The only thing left for you to do now was to get back to the Capital and have the antidote made. Although something is nagging at the back of your mind, while the plans you had made for the assault on the ritual site were all ready and fine, you had never actually seen the site with your own eyes, maybe it would be wise to survey the sight yourself and see if there was anything the scouts didn’t mention in their report?>Just head back today’s been rough so far and the last thing you want to do is tempt fate.>A peek at the ritual site couldn’t hurt, it would be good to see the place you were supposed to assault with your own eyes.>[Write in]

We saved Selenas at least two times tonight, first from the heart stab, that almost killed us and then from the poison, let's just take her back and treat that wound. Funny, it's usually Baldr that almost dies in these things, this is the first time we almost lost a teammate.

>>3300390>>3300446>>3300500>>3300504You clamp down hard on that nagging thought. You’d survived a rough night, you weren’t about to risk it all just for a look at the enemy camp. It takes a little longer than you expected for the detox potion to wear off on Selenas, but eventually her retching recedes to an acceptable level and you push on for the last leg of your journey.Tired, sore, and in need of a bath, you enter the Capital, the guards upon recognizing you and your battered state allow you in with no questions asked. The old healer at the hospital is delighted as you hand over several skins of poison “What did you do kill a whole…” his voice drops off as he notices your current condition. “Yes well, I’ll get started on making an antidote it should be ready in a day or two.” The healer leans past you and pointing at Selenas asks “Is she alright?”“She got stabbed by one of the swamp warriors.” You reply looking back at Selenas who was swaying in the saddle and trying her hardest not to vomit.“Oh dear,” The healer says walking past you and over to Selenas. “Off the horse young lady I need to take a look at you,” the healer says. In no shape to object Selenas slides off her horse with the healer’s help.. He quickly checks her over making note of her bandaged wounds and sickly complexion, before turning and asking “Did you bandage these wounds?”“Yes,”“Hm, not bad, they’re effective, if a little sloppy. I don’t recognize her symptoms, you said she was poisoned? If that’s true she should be dead not puking her guts out. Did you do something to her?”“I gave her an herbal remedy that’s supposed to rid the body of toxins. It worked on a different poison so I thought why not try it on this one.”“Ah a purging concoction, they do work, although their effectiveness does vary and the toll on the body is rather extreme. Where did you learn all this from, did you attend a healers hospital, or were you an herbalist son before you became a solider?”“I learned from watching you healers work on soldiers when I served on the Eleven front, after that well…”>“I was always interested in the healer’s arts I picked it up as a hobby of sorts.”>“On the battlefield, there isn’t always a healer by your side to put you back together when you get hurt, so I learned how to do it myself.”>“I always seem to find myself doing healers work, no matter where I go. You did a fine job but your companion will need some additional treatment. Having her body purge the toxin works well for most poisons, but swamp folk poisons like to stick around. I’ll keep her here and make sure that the poison doesn’t flare again and when the antidote is finished, she’ll get the first taste.”“Alright, but I’ll need her back when you finish that antidote.”“She should be well by then, now go and get some rest yourself, you look terrible.”>Rest sounds like just what you need.>You can’t rest yet, you still have to meet with the Colonel and your men.>You can sleep after you’ve spent some time helping Mildri with her demon problem>[Write In]

>>3301292Probably, but still, curious. Baldr did put his life on the line for her, he certanly still feels for her. It's too soon to give up I think, and even sooner to go around chasing skirts, I'm not saying it will work out, but I want to keep going at least for a while, Baldr doesn't back down on the first obstacle.
>>3301315Why go for the toothless wonder who gets stomped by swampy boys and rejected Baldr? Go for the magic one who can freeze enemies and actually likes Baldr.
>>3301333Thats the thing, he doesn't like her man, we shot her down a day ago.I mean, where the hell did this mildri thing even came from? We were all on board to give it time and keep trying but all of a sudden you start relentlesly pushing for her.Not that Mildri is bad or anything, I just don't want to give up at the first obstacle.

>>3301175>>3301438>This’ll be it from me for tonight. You needed rest and you needed it badly. You’d been up all night fighting and running for your life, sleep sounded like just what you needed and judging from how Mildri looked, she needed some too. Heading back to the inn you take a bath and notice a large bruise on your chest, over where your heart was. That blow you blocked for Selenas must have been some hit to do that to you. Finishing up, you finally lie down on your bed and drift peacefully off to sleep. You awake some hours later, it was just after dusk outside and a large waxing moon was lifting into the sky. You ponder going back to sleep, but you figure you can use this time to catch up on some important things, the most important one being writing that letter to your mother. You hadn’t written to her before because well she couldn’t read, but that wasn’t the only reason.>Well it’s been a long time since we delved into Baldr’s backstory, but now’s the time to fill in some gaps. When Baldr left home to join the army, he left his parents on:>Good terms, he hasn’t had time to write his parents since he joined.>Bad terms, he’s been afraid to write his parents and dreads meeting them after how they parted.Baldr joined the army because:>He wanted to see the world beyond his little village, and do something besides plant crops the rest of his life. It is only later that he would become a hardened and loyal solider of the Empire.>He felt that it was his duty. Baldr was a loyal citizen of the Empire even before he became a solider>He got conscripted. While not quite understanding why he was pulled away from this home, Baldr would eventually come to understand his service and its importance to the Empire.Lastly and not important to Baldr’s backstory, what do you tell your parents:>Just tell them that you are alive and well.>Let them know where you’ve been and what you’ve been up to since you left.>Warn them of the coming battle and that they may never see you again.Feel free to plug a Write In to any of the prompts above, but for my sanity please format it like this:When Baldr left home to join the army, he left his parents on:>Bad terms, he’s been afraid to write his parents and dreads meeting them after how they parted.Baldr joined the army because:>He wanted to see the world beyond his little village, and do something besides plant crops the rest of his life. >>3301501>Bad termsMaybe his parents supported the rebels or fought against the queen somehow, and Baldr joined as a way to keep them from being punished.>He felt that it was his duty. While not quite understanding why he was pulled away from this home, Baldr would eventually come to understand his service and its importance to the Empire.Baldr joined the service to protect his family from being punished for being rebels. It would also explain why he was relegated to serving under a shit hobgoblin dungeon despite his valorous actions against the elves, the Empire didn’t truly trusted him at that point.>Just tell them that you are alive and well.Baldr is a loyal queensman and a veteran soldier now, he knows how OPSEC works.

While not quite understanding why he was pulled away from this home, Baldr would eventually come to understand his service and its importance to the Empire.>Warn them of the coming battle and that they may never see you again.Baldr remembered the day he was conscripted. He was scared and confused, he didn't understand why he was fighting , he didn't understand it when he was first training with his Troop. He didn't understand it when he saw that tragedy the first time he entered the forest. It was only after he started to think about the people around him, about why they they were fighting and dying. He himself just fought out of fear and anger . He didn't want to die and who could blame him . When he was suffering from dysentery and malaria. When he was gutted and accidentally ate a poisonous Apple. And that one time that he nearly got alcohol poisoning because he drank an entire Barrel terrible terrible wine. It was ironic it was when he finally left the front and saw how peaceful is was back home that he realize why he was fighting. Why they were forcing people to fight. It was so That Others May Live freely and peacefully, so they can live and beautiful Blissful ignorance. Baldur missed his parents his brothers and sisters. But back home they were safe, they had a warm fire and then a nice meal every day. You never understood why his grandad had that sort under his bed. But now he knew why. It was so that if one day something terrible would happen, he would be able to protect himself and his family his son, his daughter-in-law, and his grandkids.
>>3301543Sort was supposed to be sword. God damn autocorrect.

>>3301536I had to break it to you but it seems like the Rebellion is rather recent.
>>3302470This is probably far from the Queens first insurgency she’s had to deal with. She’s ruled for over 100 years. This is probably only the most recent.
>>3302477Good point good point. But and this is what the GM, is this Rebellion recents or was it before you left for the front?
>>3302501I think this one is fairly recent, we just learned about it when our garrison got infiltrated/attacked
>>3302501This rebellion is quite recent, you're not entirely sure when it started, but it was likely shortly after you finished your deployment on the Elven front. As for previous rebellions, you yourself have never heard of any happening in your life time, but your parents did tell you of noble plots to kill/overthrow the queen, but whether they were just stories to entertain you, or the actual truth you can't be sure.>Update in a few
>>3301501>>3301543>>3301752>>3301781>>3302008Ever since you’d been sent off to fight on the elven front, you’d learned your letters and numbers, but never really had time to use them. Even after that your life rarely gave you and opportunity to write, but now so close to what be the last battle you’ll fight, you feel like have to write them, but what will should you write?” You’ve changed a lot since they last saw you that fateful day when the conscription plucked you from your home. You didn’t quite understand why you had to fight at the time, but now, after all you’ve seen, the answer to that question is obvious. It was for them, for everything you see around you. That is why you had to fight and bleed, and why so many others had to die.Memories of the elven front start to creep back in, but you shake them off and focus on writing you letter. As the memories retreat, you know what you have to write, just by getting this letter they will know that you are alive, but you may not stay that way for long and you don’t want them to worry if the next time they hear of you, it will be news of your death. So, it with these heavy thoughts on your mind, that you start writing.Mom and Dad you’re no doubt shock that anyone send you a letter, but don’t be alarmed it is just me your son Baldr. I just wanted to let you know that I am alive and that well, I might not be coming back. I’m sure you came to terms with the fact that I might die in the Queen’s service when I left. I’m writing you to say that I still might and that well things are going to get a lot worse for me. A great battle is coming, and many people will no doubt die, me among them. Regardless of what happens I want you to know that I served well and I do not regret getting conscripted. I realize now just how important my service is, it is not just service to the Queen, but service to you, my family I love you all very much and I hope that I can see you again, but if I don’t, do not weep for me, I will have died doing what I did for you and everyone in the village. Your Son BaldrFinishing your letter you fold the paper up and lay it on your bed to give to a courier in the morning. You weren’t quite tired yet so you decide to take a walk. As you descend into the dark inn’s main room, you notice off in a far corner a small candle flickering. Illuminated by its little dancing light was Mildri deep in her books. She hadn’t noticed you yet and might never the way she’s scanning her book.>Now a good a time as any to help Mildri with her demon problem.>Leave her mentoring for tomorrow just go on your walk.>[Write In]

>>3303086>>3303125>>3303128>>3303139>Last post of the night“Mildri,” you call out to her. She snaps her attention away from the tome and squints into the darkness until she finally spots you.“Oh, Baldr, it’s you,” she says relaxing a little.“C’mon lets go for a walk,” you gesture for her to follow you as you head toward the door. Mildri, shocked for a moment stares dumbly at you before finally realizing what you’d just said. She slams her book shut and nearly vaults over the table to catch up to you.Once outside she asks “Where are we going?”“To the markets.”“This late at night?”“You never know who might be out selling things, beside we aren’t looking for normal goods and night shops don’t usually sell normal goods.”“I guess.”“Anyway the market isn’t really the purpose of this walk.”“It isn’t?”“No, we’re going to talk about your demon problem as well, so why don’t you start by telling me a little bit more about this demon inside you. What’s her name?”“Well, her name is Aborea.”“Okay, what kind of demon is she exactly I know you told me she was a demon of vengeance, but that’s a little vague?”“Yes well it’s just that she’s kind of hard to describe. I used vengeance because when I called out to a demon to help give me vengeance she came, but I don’t think she’s actually a demon of vengeance. She’s very good at ice magic which is why I’m so good at it, so I think she might actually be an ice demon.”“So she’s an ice demon who granted you your vengeance, and then refused to leave.”“Well, when most mages summon a demon, they usually add some sort of binding spell with the ritual so that when they desire the demon can be banished back, but when I summoned her I wasn’t thinking clearly and summoned her without any restrictions. So yes, she refuses to leave, but I’m not sure exactly what she wants. I summoned her to get my vengeance and didn’t care what would happen to me afterward. I hear that most demons that a mage will summon will often try to slip their bonds and either possess the mage, or try to manifest themselves into world. Aborea had the chance to possess me when I first called on her. I was a young and weak mage, I should have been an easy way into the world for her, but for some reason she merely entered me and gave me the aid I wanted.” Mildri’s last words are almost more to herself than to you as she ponders why Aborea hadn’t just possessed her.>“Why not just ask her, go on and ask her why she hasn’t possessed you yet.>“I can ask her if you’d like, besides I have questions for the Aborea.”>Let Mildri think the market is just ahead and you want to do some shopping.>[Write In]

I realise that we gave him that name, but all this back story has got me thinking about, well backstory. Specifically about our families. That it also makes me excited about what you're going to do.
>>3303972I never really liked the last name I've always seen it as sort of a nickname given to you by your old unit while your real last name has remained a secret.

We’ll get her to talk.”Mildri gives you a hopeful smile, the first smile you’ve ever seen from her. “Okay,” and with that closes her eyes and her face falls slack. You watch and wait, at the first flicker of movement you seize the initiative immediately and begin questioning the demon. “I know you’ve been listening Aborea, so just come on out and say it. Why didn’t you fully possess Mildri?”“Oh, my you’ve become rather forward Captain, I thought yo-”“Answer the question Aborea. You’re not talking out of this one.”“I see,” she responds fidgeting slightly “Yes, you’re both quite persistent and here I tho- Oh alright already.” Aborea snaps over at something over her shoulder. Taking a breath she continues “I felt sorry for her okay, that’s why I didn’t fully possess her.”“You felt sorry for her? Can you even do that?”“Yes, I have feelings just like you.” She retorts slightly offended “But I didn’t fully take her over just because I felt sorry for her. I’ve seen what happens to demons who try to manifest in this world, or possess a mage. They die, usually horribly, you humans don’t seem to like demons in your world all the much.”“With all you’ve done to Mildri, I can’t imagine why,” You say sarcastically.“Oh shut up, she was acting on her own feelings, I just gave her the will to act on them.”“We’re getting off topic, you said you’ve seen what happened to other demons who manifest here, so you chose to only partially takeover Mildri in so that you can hide better and remain here longer, But without full control over Mildri, you really don’t get to do much in this world do you.”“It’s still far better here with only minor control over a human compared to what it’s like back in my home. There’s so much color and contrast here, everything in my realm is just so samey, it gets boring real quick.”“So you decided to come here because you were bored?”(1/2)
>>3306865“Yeah, why do you think demons even come here, it certainly isn’t because you humans are great companions.”“But if we humans aren’t good companions why are you sharing Mildri’s body, you could have easily possessed her when she first summoned you. You could have just laid low and done whatever sightseeing you wanted to do on your own. I know you said you felt sorry for her but come on. You couldn’t have felt sorry enough for her to spare her life at the expense of your freedom.”“And what if I did huh, why is that so hard to believe.” Aborea’s tone was rather defensive with that last remark, it appears you’ve found a weak spot.>“Because demons aren’t sympathetic beings, you’re power hungry, devious, and only look out for yourselves. You don’t care about Mildri, that’s just a cover for your real goal of hiding in the shadows until you see your moment to fully take over Mildri and do what you want.”>“If had really felt bad for her, you wouldn’t have possessed her in the first place.”>“Because after you entered her, you’ve caused her nothing but pain and suffering.”>[Write In]

Some other demon would have found her and did what I didn’t, they would have destroyed her. Possessing her was the most merciful thing I could have done for her. Leaving her for another demon would have been cruel.”“So then why do you stay with Mildri. You saved her from being possessed by another demon mission accomplished. You can just go now so why haven’t you left.”“Because she needs me.”“No, she doesn’t, the last thing she needs is you.”“How would you know? You didn’t see her back then, you didn’t know what it was like.”“I know that she doesn’t need you now.”“Yes she does.”“Oh really, why don’t you ask her?”“Mildri doesn’t know what she wants.”“She knows that she doesn’t want you.”Aborea emits a low growl before a blast of cold wind slams into you “Enough!” She shouts, “What makes you an authority on what’s best for her?”“What makes you one?” A second blast even stronger blast hits you forcing you backward.“Because I’m the reason she’s still alive. I cared for her, I saved her. I make her express herself. Without me she never would have left that awful school, she would have remained a scared little girl with no power, no personality, and no hope. You didn’t want to swallow up Mildri because you’d been in her shoes.”“Yeah and since then I’ve been trying to help her. That’s why I can’t leave she needs my help in getting stronger as much as I need hers to stay grounded to this world.”This was certainly not what you had expected when you had decided to help Mildri with her demon problem. What were you going to do about this?>Aborea and Mildri are inseparable, (it looks like you’ll have to help them both work together better.)>Mildri doesn’t need this demon she needs to grow as a person on her own. One however catches your eye, a massive wagon with lamps emitting a purple light and a rather familiar old woman out front as you approach the wagon, the woman catches sight of you. “Oh well lookie here a return customer. How are the rings working out dearie?”“Just fine thank you.” You say quickly as her eyes scan you over and make all your hairs stand on end.“That’s good to hear, and who’s this you’ve brought with you.” The old woman says shifting her gaze over to Aborea. Aborea flinches under the woman’s gaze and immediately blurts out “You’re not human.”“Oh you’ve brought and astute one with you this time. What makes you think I’m not human dearie?”“Human’s gazes don’t cast magic like that on whim.”“Can you tell me what kind of magic it was dear?”“Sight Magic,” Mildri’s voice says “It lets see a person see through objects and lets them see what things a person has underneath their clothes, but not just that, yours is also strong enough to pierce magic barriers and can even see into a person’s mind and soul. It’s too strong for a human to do as easily as you’ve just done it.”“My my you are a smart girl, but can you tell what I am?”“You’re a goddess, you must be nothing else as powerful would be a traveling saleswoman, and from the fact that you’re running this merchant stall, I’d say you’re a goddess of merchants.”“Correct,” Turning to you the goddess says, “I must say dearie, you have excellent taste in traveling companions.”“More like I have excellent luck to have been given them.”The goddess chuckles “Yes I suppose that’s about right. First of all they generally aren’t in the market for my goods. Secondly, I find that gods, adventurers, heroes, and demons far more interesting than any trader or merchant and more likely to spend money. Lastly my followers are a haggling bunch of bastards, they’d fight me on the price of everything, and even though I’m supposed to be a goddess of merchants I hate hagglers. Bunch no good copper pinching tight assed cheapskates.” An aura of energy begins to form around the goddess as she speaks. The lamps on her cart begin to flicker and fade and you get the feeling you should be anywhere but here. Noticing the effect she was having the goddess shakes herself and returns to normal. “Sorry about that dearie, I just get so worked up when I think of all the money those stingy skinflints have cost me. Anyway dearie what can Merrin goddess of trade do for you?”Pointing to a crate of healing potions you say “I’ll take one of those healing potions, and last time I was here you had a book, I think it was called Handling Your Inner Demons?”The goddess pulls one of the vials of healing liquid out of the crate and places it on the counter “There you go, as for that book I’m regret to tell you I sold it, to another god in fact. He seemed to be rather distraught over something a human had said to him and he was looking for guidance. I offered him a kind word or two and that book.“Hmm, if that’s the case then what would you have for magical items, in particular something that will help me survive blows, or make me tougher.”“Let me see here,” the goddess says turning around and clambering up into her wagon. A few moments of loud bangs, the sound of myriad objects falling over, and the goddess’s cursing later, she reemerges from the wagon carrying a collection of things. Laying them out on her counter she explains each item. “This is an Oak Heart Belt.” She says laying down a belt that looked like it was made of wood, yet moved as if it was made of the supplest leather. “It will make you as tall and sturdy as an oak, but be careful through it has a secondary and less pleasant effect. Wearing the belt for an extended period of time will turn your skin to bark, while better at stopping a sword it will make it harder for you to move and will itch like crazy.” Laying out a necklace next the goddess explains “This is just a simple vitality necklace, it should let you take a few more blows”(1/2)
>>3311707Lastly hefting up a pair of gauntlets the goddess tells you “These are the Gauntlets of Fortune’s Bane. The goddess of good luck is a fickle bitch and I should know I’ve dealt with her before. And that's the thing for gods, they have to do what Their aspect is, and what their followers believe them to do. War God is a God of War fighter. I would run away from him in a heartbeat. Every other God has to follow their aspect and what their Believers believe them possible to do. You demons are the same aren't you. Succubus and Incubus, have do you with the expect of lust. They feed off of it as well as encourage others to be lustful. Demons of greed are well often greedy. Demons of Wrath are wrathful. Excetera. So, finishing your breakfast you take a quick look around the inn. Mildri nowhere to be found, you set off to the hospital alone. When you arrive, you stop a young healer and ask were you can find the old healer you’d given the poison. Thankfully, the healer knows who you’re talking about and leads you up to the third floor of the hospital to a rather large alchemy lab. Glassware, apparatuses and reagents line the walls in tall shelving units and most of the rooms available walking space is taken up by large tables filled with half-finished or still reacting alchemic concoctions. The young healer leads you to a far back corner of the room where sits the old healer mixing reagents into a bubbling cauldron of something, while miscellaneous other substances foam, hiss, or change color in their beakers around him.“Sir, a Captain Baldr is here to see you.” The young healer says, drawing the attention of the older healer.“Ah, Captain your antidote is coming along quite nicely it should be ready in two days’ time. I must say those swamp folk have come up with quite the virulent substance this time. A single drop is enough to sicken even the halest of men and kill them within hours of first contact.”“Speaking of sick people, how is my companion.”“Not well I’m afraid,” the old healer says not looking up from his work. “She’s unconscious and running a fever. While you did an admirable job of bandaging her wounds, they still got infected. I believe it is the poison’s fault. It likely prevented her body from fighting off the initial infection. Though I must also admit, that despite your best intentions Captain, your purging concoction while saving her from initial death by poison weakened her body’s ability to handle the infection.”“I- I didn’t know.”“Relax Captain, I don’t blame you for anything, and you shouldn’t blame yourself, you did the best you could with the knowledge and materials you had on hand.”“Is she going to make it?”“I’m doing what I can for her, but she likely won’t improve until I can finish and give her the antidote. Once the poison is assuredly gone from her, I can do more to treat her infection and fever. If you’d like to see her my assistant here can take you to her although she’ll likely be unconscious yet. I’ll tell you what though, you seem like you’re genuinely interested in the healing arts. Any night you can’t sleep, or get the itch to learn more about healer’s work come on by and I’ll teach you what I can. I don’t sleep much at night so don’t feel bad if you show up at midnight, I’ll likely be awake anyway.”“Thank you… I don’t believe you’ve told me your name?”“It’s Gregory, although Old Man works just as well, many people here call me that already. Now follow my assistant here and he’ll take you to see your companion.”Gregory’s assistant leads you further up in the hospital to a room on the top floor. The room itself was completely dark with only a little light leaking in from the shuttered windows. Laying on one of the beds in the room was Selenas, bundled up in a thick wad of blankets, yet shivering. As you approach her bedside you can hear her slightly labored, but steady breathing. She shows no response as you come up beside her. Gregory’s assistant rewets a rag and places it back over Selenas’s forehead while you struggle slightly with what to do. You’d seen dead and dying comrades before, watched as the life left their eyes while they cried out for help, or silently and resolutely accepted death. This was different though to see her, someone you’d genuinely come to care for, sick and suffering before you with no way to aid her well you just didn’t know what to do.>If there’s nothing you can do then there is nothing to be done, you’ve seen her, she’s alive and with Gregory’s help she’ll get better. Hold on, the healers are working on an antidote for the poison and should have one soon, but in the mean time you have to hold on. I know that you’re strong enough to survive this. You’ve survived way tougher things in the past. Hell you survived me, that alone should show just how tough you are.” You laugh to yourself at that, after all almost everyone who’d crossed you had ended up dead or worse, except for this lucky girl. “I know you’ll make it Selenas, you just have to hold on.” You finish, and spend just a few more moments holding her hand.Eventually, you pull yourself away from her side. As much as you’d like to spend all day with her you have a duty to fulfill. “I have to go now Selenas, but I’ll come back and when I do, you’ll be back on your feet.” You say your farewell and you exit the room. Leaving the hospital, you head off to attend to your next duty, meeting the Colonel and your troops. You try the city garrison’s barracks first as that was where you’d seen them holed up last. Upon reaching the garrison, you ask one of the garrison guards if the Colonel had his men stationed there. The man nods but points you toward the Capital’s eastern gate saying that the Colonel had been taking his men out there every day for exercises. Thanking the man you head out the eastern gates to find that he had been telling the truth. The area outside the eastern gates had been thoroughly transformed into a training ground. Large forces of infantry and cavalry where running mock battles and combat drills in near perfect sync with the bellowed commands of officers. Some of them have been fighting for far longer than you, and others know things you don’t. Not tapping into their experience is waste of their talents.” The Colonel pauses and lets the frustration drain from him “But I guess I can’t fault you too much for not knowing, this is probably your first time commanding a force of veteran troops who might actually know something. There is larger issue here however, even after you’d formulated your plan, you didn’t come here immediately to brief your soldiers on what they’d be doing and start preparing them for the coming operation. That is something I thought you would have known after your defense of your garrison. So, Captain what so grabbed your attention that you would neglect your troops readiness?”>Tell him the truth you went after supplies for an antidote for your troops.>You’re not going to play his games, just tell him to direct you to your troops.>The Colonel’s right, you kind of bungled this. Now though after this incompetent display, I wonder whether I should let you anywhere near my troops.” The Colonel pauses and glances out over his drilling men. “This is your last chance to prove to me that you’re worthy of your position. If you show any more signs of incompetency or prove a danger to my men. I will take them back and give the Queen a full report on your short comings. Am I understood Captain?”“Yes sir,” you say, your soldier’s instincts save you from any further embarrassment.“Good, lieutenant.” The Colonel calls out and a young looking solider enters the tent. “Show the Captain to his detachment.”“Sir,” the lieutenant gives the Colonel a salute before leading you out of the tent and to corner of the practice field where several dozen men were drilling. “Captain, your men PLATOONS FALL IN.” The lieutenant shouts and has his words echoed by three distinct voices. The first thing I need to know from you is what you know about swamp folk.” The three lieutenants all glance at each other before shaking their heads, “Nothing sir,”“Hm, alright I guess I’ll have to get you guys up to speed then. You can dismiss your men for now, this will probably take a while.” The lieutenants dismiss their men and then follow you into a nearby unoccupied tent. Once inside you hand out the reports you were given and show them a map of the area while you lay out your plan of attack. When you finish you ask “Alright any questions?”“Do we know their numbers?”“No, the only thing we know is that the enemy forces will be a mix of warriors and shamans and that their numbers will grow as the day of the ritual approaches.”“What about this poison they use is there an antidote for it?”“I’ve got a healer working on that as we speak, as soon as he finishes it we’ll move on the ritual site.”“Wait, Captain if our goal is to disrupt this ritual, why attack so early? If we succeed in taking the ritual site, what’s to stop them from using a different site later?” Lieutenant Nolan asks.“Not only that Captain, but if we attack too early there might not be many shamans at the site don’t you think we should weaken their numbers before the main battle. If we attack during the ritual a good portion of the shamans will be busy maintaining the ritual and won’t be able to fight us.” Ward adds“I have qualms with the attack from the shore. If indeed we go for a day light attack, once the enemy sees us they will likely alert their friends on the opposite shore and take cover in the woods. I would suggest attacking the night of the ritual, we could float down the river on rafts under the cover of night to get close to the ritual site then me and my crossbowmen can pincushion those shamans before they could even react.” Long says. You take in all your lieutenants have to say and consider their suggestions carefully before responding.(1/2)

Then create an ice bridge over the river to finish off the remaining shamans and swamp folk still at the ritual site.
>>3321870A question Qm, and it will be important if we decide to attack at night or day. When we attacked the swamp guy patrols we did it at night so they wouldn't see us while we used the potiona, but thay didn't really have any penalties when we followed them through the woods and torches weren't mentioned.Torches came up when those people were following us but I don't know if they were swamp folks. So the question is:Do they see better than regular humans in the darkness?Accept:>The scouting, we were going to do it ourselves but we better delegate thia one.>And attacking on the day of the ritual. As for attacking by boats, we have to remember that their shammans have water magic, so it would be easy for them to just flip the boats and send heavy armored men to the bottom of tge river. We can make our initial assoult with them, but the idea behind frozing the river was to deny the shammans a terrain where they can fuck with us.If we stand on the frozen river for the assault they won't be able to use earth, water or plabts and vines to grab at our feet. So, the question remains,, hhow is their night vision? And while and approach and first strike by boats seems good we should still freeze a part of the river for our troops to make the landing so the shammans can't fuck wuth the boats
>>3322326And respond to Nolan that no, they have to use that specific site for the ritual, but waiting and killing more shammans during the actual ritual will make the coming battle easier.
>>3322326Depending on your approach day or night could have a significant effect on your attack. As swamp folk's night vision let me put it this way. They had torches with them when you first hit their patrol, but the swamp folk had little issue fighting you in close quarters combat at night.
>>3322578>>3322326Basically the swamp folk can see in the dark pretty well at close ranges, but need torches and light to see further and more clearly. This will probably be my last post of the thread before we fall off the board, so expect a new thread between now and Friday.
>>3322326Ok, so.How about this, further scouting because that's what we wanted to do when we ran off with the girls.Attack at the ritual night while the shammans are distracted.Approach by boat and freeze the landing so we don't have to step on water to attack after the crossbows make their salvos.
>>3321870>>3322326>>3322333>>3322768>Looks like we're falling off the board slower than I thought. I guess I'll put out a few more updates.“You bring up good points lieutenants, Very well then, we’ll attack the night of the ritual using the river to get close to the ritual site. After the initial salvo from your crossbowmen Long, my mage will freeze the river stopping the shamans from sinking us with their ice magic. From there the rest our forces will disembark and finish off any surviving shamans and swamp warriors. As for your concerns as to a different ritual site being used Nolan, the current site was specially selected by the enemy shamans as it met the specific requirements of the ritual.”Your new proposal is met with nods and grunts of approval from your lieutenants. “No more questions then? Good let’s get to work, we’ve got a few days before the ritual I suggest we prepare as best we can. Long I want you get your crossbowmen used to shooting targets from rafts in choppy water, if we don’t kill most of the shamans in the first volley they’ll likely strike back and hard. As for you two, Ward and Nolan, I want your men training to fight on ice and unstable footing, as that’s what we’ll be fighting on for most of the attack. I can get my mage to help you with acquiring ice for the training.” The lieutenants nod and acknowledge their orders as you go on “There is one last thing we need to settle, we need to get a good count of the enemy and to learn a little bit more about the terrain before we go in. Which of your squads would be a good fit for a scouting mission?”The lieutenants’ eyes all fall on Long. Realizing he’d been volunteered Long sighs “I have a squad who could do it.”“Good we’ll send them out just a few days before we attack, I want as our information to be as accurate as possible before we attack. Now let’s get to it lieutenants.” Meeting adjourned you leave the lieutenants to organize their men while you retrieve Mildri. You were going to need ice for to train the men and she was the closest source. You head back to the inn to get her, but run into her on your way back. (1/2)
>>3324674“Mildri, what are you doing out here?” you ask.“Oh, Captain that’s where you went I was looking for you,” Aborea answers you.“Aborea, what are you up to? Is Mildri okay? If you-”“Relax Baldr, Mildri agreed to this, it’s part of our new deal.”“Your new deal?”“Yes, I was tired of being cooped up inside all the time reading because Mildri’s such a book loving shut-in. So in the interest of us getting along better I struck a deal with her. Every other day I get to come out and explore while Mildri takes a break from being boring. I spent most of today wandering the Capital and I must say that you humans are the most boring people imaginable. Bickering over the price of bread, gossiping about what’s her name’s new suitor, all this… peace, is this what you people find interesting?”“Peace is what you get when not everyone is a vicious demon.” Aborea rolls her eyes at that comment “And yes we often prefer peace to war, though at times it may not seem that way.”“Well you humans can keep your peace and tranquility, I’d prefer some loud, fun, and vicious excitement. That’s why I was looking for you, nothing says calm or peaceful around you for long.” You frown at the correctness of her statement and wished it weren’t so damn true. “So, Baldr, what have you been up to?”“I’ve just met with our troops for the assault, we’ve finished our plans for the attack, and now all that’s left is to prepare for the actual fighting.”“Oh, that sounds like fun, anything I can do to assist you?” Aborea asks, giving you a mischievous grin.“No, there’s nothing you can assist me with, Mildri on the other hand can.”Aborea frowns “Why, what can she do that I can’t?”“She can restrain herself and act professionally and right now I need someone who can do that, so if you’ll please let me speak with Mildri.”“I can do that,” Aborea says attempting to sound more like Mildri.“Can you now?”“Yes I can, just give me the chance and I’ll show you.”>Why not, this will give you a good chance to see how Aborea deals with ice magic and will let you gauge her ability to take orders.>No, you need to appear as professional as possible and Mildri is the only one you’d trust to help with this training.>[Write In]
>>3324676>Why not, this will give you a good chance to see how Aborea deals with ice magic and will let you gauge her ability to take orders.Well, its a chance, if you squander it I'll not trust you again.
>>3324676>[Write In]"I doub this is the way you want to spend your "in charge" time, you'll just freeze the floor and then stand around doing nothing....probably reading while the soldiers train, because if you do anything other than that then we are going to have a problem"maybe boredom will convince her this is not something good to do, I don't want the men to distrust the mage from the mission
>>3324676>No, you need to appear as professional as possible and Mildri is the only one you’d trust to help with this training.
Rolled 1 (1d2)Looks like we have a tie, I'll start the next thread up Friday with the result of this roll, unless a consensus is reached.>>3324763>>33254061 = Let Aborea help you>>3324816>>33255032 = Deny Aborea's help
>>3326611ok man, thanks for running and see you there
>>3326611 we should also tell those guys first that we're going to have a demon to to give the ice. You know just in case something does actually happen.
