We do not know.""That is why you are here. You must purge our fine city of the Corrupted. Be them demon hosts, undead, or simply those who lost grasp of their souls.""Hehehe... We are eager to see your results."Dust covers your boots and coat. Inquisitors walk towards their destinations, always. You keep a tight grip on your Holy Text, the Grand Cross emblazoned upon its leathery cover with golden threads. The roads and avenues of Riva extend as far as you can see, the people walking around eye you with suspicion, but never dare glare for too long, lest they cause your ire. You shove off the dust from your grand hat, which proudly displays the sign of the Inquisition, a grand golden I with a skull engraved on its center. The hunt begins, and you must remind yourself of your strengths. Weapons and miracles, the staple of the Inquisitor.Your weapon is...>A two-handed sword with symbols of God and his Angels forged upon its hilt. A crusader's memento.>A cleric's mace with its usual sharp contours. A weapon used to stamp out heresy at home.>A pair of duelling pistols, finest flintlocks of the merchant cities.Your miracle is...>Lightning Spear. Clerics also call it God's Smite. A large bolt of lightning forms in your hand and can be thrown.>Caress. A soothing light heals worldly poisons. It has no effect on Corruption, however.>Unveil. A red orb appears from your hand and chases those with murderous intentions. Not all demons are murderous, but most are.The Strengths of the Inquisitors are grand indeed. All who would oppose them would do well to prepare to meet their fate before doing so. As you walk down, you ponder on your next action.>You will be the Hunter. You will track the stench of Corruption and smite those around it.>You will be the Hunted. You will attract the Corrupted towards your Holy presence and smite them if they ever come close.===I===Posting the OP now then continuing tomorrow. >>3229519>PistolsThese newly developed arms use black powder and an intricate flint mechanism to fire a bullet towards the foe. Its effectiveness has been tested again and again, and it's been demonstrated that a single shot of such arms will either kill or cripple those targeted by it. Its loud thundering noise is a grand representation of God's will. Its bigger drawbacks are the reload times and the fact that it can't shoot in rainy weather. These weapons inspire respect to those who bear witness to their firing, and those who would fight against men bearing pistols best begin their attack at the closest range possible. Though Inquisitors appreciate using pistols as a way of punishing heretics, it is also known that one might face more than two heretics at once, or miss a shot every once in a long while. All Inquisitors bearing flintlocks also have a long knife sheathed in their belt in case push comes to shove.===I===Next post is being written.
>>3229563You mutter prayers to the White Lady, God's holy bride. Then to the Archangels, God's three most faithful. Then to the Angels, the Archangels' faithful. You ask them to free this city of its Corruption by blessing and guiding your actions from here onwards. A glow appears to the right of your eye as you walk down the grand avenue, you stop on your tracks and turn right, staring where the glow would have you look. A tight market street begins there, filled with a grand crowd and yells of the merchants' best offer. There is Corruption there.>Head into the crowd and await further signs that would guide you to Corruption.>Observe the crowd from atop some boxes and make yourself seen, cast Unveil to see if any bear murderous intention towards you.>Continue through the avenue you were in and await another sign that may lead somewhere more fitting for your strengths.

You stop and face there where Corruption lay. This time it is no street, but rather an empty, rundown alley. You notice that you are rather close to the city walls. You will have to choose your first fight, either this alley or the market.>Head into the alley with weapons sheathed.>Head into the alley with pistols unsheathed.>Return to the market street.

>>3229616You approach the alley and stop at its entrance, analyizing it. There is human life hidden within it, you know it. The most Holy has also indicated the presence of Corruption, it must be eradicated. You take out both your pistols and enter it. The foul smell within is one to be typically found in a cramped and damp alley, but there is something more: the smell of rot, further within. You walk, slowly, your boots splatter against puddles of water in the uneven floor and rats and bugs scurry around to safety as they hear your entrance.Roll 1d100. You put away one of your pistols and begin the Miracle. The red orb putters into existence within your hand, small embers rising from your skin to join in the formation, your arm and the orb itself are surrounded by light for an instant and finally, the orb is created. Its closed feline eye opens wide and looks towards the alley. It lifts up from your hand, leaving a trail of light behind it. Slowly but surely, it heads inwards. You follow, guns in hand. The orb continues on as you must climb irregular stairs to avoid puddles or jump over odd obstacles in your way. Eventually, you spot what might have attracted the orb. It's human, or at least it was. The only sound it exhumes is a ragged breathing. Its limbs extended, the skin turns grey, and a dark fur envelops its body. Ragged clothes still upon it. The creature is on the ground, huddling itself as it whimpers. What surprises you is what is to its left, a young little girl, no more than twelve, is also huddled up by it, hiding her face in her legs, to which she holds on tightly with her arms. She's also breathing. The orb surprises you as it approaches the girl, eyeing her up. It's likely that the orb saw no intent to kill you, but followed a trail it found anyway. Miracles are fickle like that.>Ignore the beast for now and approach the girl.>Shoot the pathetic beast in the head and approach the girl.>Shoot the beast in the head and leave, there is more Hunt to do.

>>3229685>shoot the girl. She doesn't smell of Corruption, but you never know right?
>>3229676>>Ignore the beast for now and approach the girl.
The peculiarity of the situation makes you go for an unorthodox move, the creature seems to be unwilling to move, though you've made your presence known. The girl didn't seem to bother looking at you either. You approach her slowly, keeping an eye on the beast. As you are but a meter from her, she raises her eyes towards you, she seems hungry and tired, her eyes are sunken denote strong sadness."Ah. Hello. You must be from the Church. We're orphans, my elder brother got sick one day and then..."She looks at the beast."He turned into this."You look at it yourself, the beast whimpers and cries as it hears the voice of the girl. It's as if it attempted to mutter words."I know it's a rotten thing to say, but I wish he were dead."The girl takes her hands to her face, trying to hide her sorrow."He refuses to move from there, I bring him food and water every day then tell him tales of us two back in the day."The girl reveals her face again and looks down, sullen."It soothes him, he stops whimpering at times and even seems at peace for a moment. But..."She looks at you."He's in pain, isn't he? He'll never heal so he must die, right? It's the good thing to do. Right?">"Yes. It is mercy. He will be at peace in the lord's realm.">"No. It is murder. And I shall commit the atrocity."
>>3229700>"Yes. It is mercy. He will be at peace in the lord's realm."Also arrest her and check her for taints of corruption.
>>3229700>"Yes. It is mercy. He will be at peace in the lord's realm."
>>3229707Again, 20 minutes after the first vote, vote closes. This norm will apply every time.
>>3229707Arresting her or not comes later.
Your words seems to strike a chord within her. She begins to cry, pouring out all the agony of the past few days. To this sound, the beast besides her seems to grow in anger. You realize that if you do not strike it down now, it may enter a state of rage as it hears its 'sister' cry. This one is Corrupted. But it doesn't seem like there is a demon within, yet there are clear indications of a demon's handiwork due to the extent of the mutation. As it rises, you wonder if the girl knows something about all of this. You look at the creature with disgust, then...>Fire with both guns at the beast before it can rise. [2 ammo spent, but greater chance of killing]>Fire with only one gun, aiming for the head. [1 ammo spent, but lower chance of killing]

A thundering explosion echoes throughout the alley and the Corruption howls in pain. Both bullets hit its chest and it falls down writhing about. You approach it and end the creature's ordeal with a slice of your knife to its heart. The kill could've been cleaner, but at least you ensured that it wouldn't retaliate. You clean the blood off your knife and start reloading your pistols. The girl is looking at the beast with sorrowful eyes."Ah. Brother..."She looks at you while you continue your procedures."What will you do to me?"Her tone is calm.>"You will be come to my Office and I will ensure you have not been tainted.">"Go on with your life, and do not befall your brother's fate."

>>3229789The girl nods, not wanting to see her fate be intertwined with her brother's. She accompanies you on your way back, running at times to catch up to your hurried pace. Close to the alley's entrance, you find a priest of the Church. You tell him that you disposed of Corruption in the alley."Thank you, Inquisitor. I will warn the Clerics of the Church of Saint Oleria."The people nearby are gathering around you and the girl, wondering what an Inquisitor was doing in an alley of their town. Most realize that you were the author of the gunshots, and fear grips them. You demand passage among the populace, who quickly let you pass. Some wanted to stop the girl from following you, thinking she was simply awed and curious, but you shove them away from there. The populace look at you with a certain disdain, wondering about the girl's fate.Your office is one of the many ornate rooms of the governor's palace. Holy texts strewn about, the Inquisitorial brand etched in almost all of your possessions. The girl looks at the room in awe, the light within reveals her features. Blonde and blue-eyed, not so common in these lands.Leaving your guns on the desk, then your coat on a chair, you sit on the same chair and ease up in your white shirt, the coat is heavy, but it protects well from harm. You take up a book, a record where you would write down the Corrupted you find and those involved in events related to Corruption. You look at the girl and demand hher and her brother's name."Ah, of course... I am Jen, my brother was Mat. We were born in the slums and-"You shush her, it isn't time for stories. You write down Mat's fate in the book. "Mat, Demon corruption - Wolfman, slain by two pistol shots."Then comes Jen's, for whom you simply write down the name at first. It is time to see.You take a small kit from your desk. It houses a needle and ten small bottles with Blessed water inside. The procedure is simple, Corrupted blood that mixes with Blessed water causes a reaction which makes the blood boil away. Creating Blessed water, however, is a much harder and time-consuming procedure. So these resources must be used sparingly and only with those involved in events like these."Will it hurt?"The girl seems afraid. You shake your head and prick her index finger with the needle, she doesn't seem to feel much hurt. A drop of blood comes out and you approach the bottle to her finger, ensuring that the blood falls into the liquid.It...Roll 1d100.

It blends right into the water and spreads around it, as if imitating a dance. What's more, it seems the blood is not relenting on its dance, and it weaves on and off. You'd never seen this reaction. You tell the girl she's fine while you return to your desk and take out your tome on Corruption And Blood. Searching around its pages, you find a definition of what you're witnessing. It seems the blood in this girl has latent talent for Miracles, as if blessed by God or one of his Sequitur. To think she was simply going to rot away with her corrupted brother.[Jen gains Blessed Blood, her blood is incorruptible unless under heavy duress by a powerful demon. 'Jen, sister of #1, not Corrupted - Blessed blood'Still, you must also write a conclusion, her fate. You look at the girl, impressed by your finding. But I..."There is doubt in her, you tell her of her latent power."B-Blessed? My blood? Why?"You wonder as well, it could be mere random chance, fate, or God's own will. Whatever the case, it can't be understood by mere mortals."I see. Well... It's a better fate than living alone in the slums."She awkwardly holds her left arm with her right."And I'd hate to see the spot where my brother was slain again and again."Such a magnificent coincidence. This poor, orphaned girl with no family has such a potential. There will be no paperwork except for the pupil register, nor will there be a family to convince. It reminds you of yourself in a way. Surely, this is a good omen for the purification of the city.Though, now that you think about it, a man in such an advanced state of Corruption, who was not yet found by the local Clerics...Something is amiss.SESSION END===I===Thank you for reading. >>3230172"Ah, Inquisitor! How good to see one of your kind writing to our Archives. Historians don't get to hear much from your people.""The Holy Text was written by our Messiah millenia ago. The Truth quickly overtook most religions, and our very Holy Text would have us know that the demons we fight today were once the old Gods who, bitter in their jealousy and resentment, turned to Corruption to kill the descendants of those who 'betrayed' them.""Of course, as you and I know, these 'Gods' are nothing more than resentful relics of a past long gone, to whom death should be administered as fast as possible.""The Inquisition is an independent organism whose sole purpose is to hunt down and slay Corruption. As Corruption is rife, the Inquisition has their hands quite busy. Some heresies would have us think that Corruption is eternal, and that Demons grow stronger or weaker according to how many worship them, a resource which they will never lack, or so they say. It is Heresy, don't we all agree? Hehe...""As for funds, they mostly live on grand donations offered by rich lords and governors and the Church itself. Donating to the Inquisition is most prestigious, and the Inquisition is always glad to return such favors in one way or another. Individual Inquisitors recieve resources according to how well they do, though all of them can maintain a relatively healthy lifestyle, if only to ensure that they can function as proper soldiers.">>3230224"Some who worship Corruption and Demons are denominated witches, though the term is quite loose and often used out of place. A strict definition would be one who enters a contract with a Demon in order to tap in their devilish 'Magic'. But I have personally seen women branded as witches merely for having a grand knowledge in herbalism. As we know, it is always the Church and the Inquisition who have the final say in the matter.""Hoho. Inquisitors are quite independent, so long as they get job done. Some see it as a necessity to... Send a message to the populace. It is not always that one can keep the plebs supressed by simply doing good deeds, at times, a 'clearer' show must be put in place. Some others think it is a savagery, and that Corruption must be dealt with quickly and silently, without making a fuss of it.""Thank you for your interest, Inquisitor. I hope to hear more questions coming from you."===I===Thanks for the thanks everyone, brings a smile to my face, even though I glaringly requested it. The Historian will stick around to keep your questions answered.
>>3230714What's our church structure. To whom we respond as a inquisitor? Does our church have active head? (like a pope)In cases of Corruption we have last word and judgment it seems. What about others crimes no Corruption related? As an Inquisitor do we have say in those?
>>3230780>What's our church structure. To whom we respond as a inquisitor? "The Church is divided into various organizations who take care of matters that the Holy Text considers necessary. The most important are the Inquisition and the Order of Clerics, though the Order of Clerics are also commonly called 'the Church' as they are the representants of the Church most often seen by commoners, their duties include: taking care of churches, sermons, proselytizing, etc. Other organizations include the Monasteries who engage in Theological debate and scripture interpretation, led by the Council of Abbots; the Daughters of the White Lady who bury the dead and care for the elderly and disabled, led by the Sister of the White Lady; etc."Inquisitors respond to the aptly named Grand Inquisitor who has final say on all matters concerning his subordinates. There are provincial leaders as well, who watch over various cities each and ensure that Inquisitors with wrong behaviours are duly punished. Otherwise, there are no roles within the structure of the Inquisition itself. Inquisitors must focus in their role as destroyers of Corruption.""Inquisitors must also respect local laws as long as they do not directly interfere with their duty. While breaking and entering is certainly illegal, it is a wholly right thing to do if there is Corruption in the invaded home. Laws concerning dress codes do not apply to Inquisitors at all, as delineated by the Treaty of Eligueira.">Does our church have active head? "Each organization of the Church has its own 'head' which may be one single person or a group of people. The most important head of the Church is the head of the Clerics: the Grand Cardinal, but this does not mean that he has any true authority over the rest of the organizations, merely that they best respect his opinions. Though the Grand Inquisitor is a big competitor of his and is usually at odds with him when it comes to deciding on certain... 'specific' matters of interpretation of the Holy Text.">What about others crimes no Corruption related?>As an Inquisitor do we have say in those?"Inquisitors are, in a way, agents of the law that is the Holy Text. Universally abhorred crimes such as wanton murder, theft, and others can be punished accordingly by an Inquisitor. Though the local lord and law enforcement can react in myriad ways to the Inquisitors 'doing their job'. An Inquisitor would do well to learn local punishments for such deeds if he finds himself willing to bring down the law in these matters. "

>>3230714What do people who enter a contract with demons get? Eternal youth? Magic?
>>3230962"Such knowledge is usually forbidden, but I will make an exception for a dear and trusted Inquisitor.""Contracts with demons normally seek a quick benefit. From healing an ailing loved one to a bloodpact for raw power and Magic. There are hundreds of possible pacts that one can do with Demons, and most of them usually wind up costing the contractor a heftier price than they first bargained. Sadly, Demons have their own wily ways to convince humans to enter these pacts. It is said that some humans are cunning enough to enter pacts with Demons as equals, or even keeping the Demons as their inferiors. Some of these evildoers have even been said to have 'replaced' Demons, whatever that may mean. This knowledge is mostly gathered from unholy texts though, and should be taken with a grain of salt. Nevertheless, if you suspect that you found one such human, be sure to bring in your biggest guns to the fight."
>>3230990But your average demon contractors are just usual everyday person right? How do we root them out?
>>3231021Killing and burning any evidence. >>3230990Question how do they come with contact with demons? Those cultists need some manuscripts, someone with knowledge, or do demons find them? One would assume if it's one of the first two it would be taken care of long time ago.How old is our church? As an official institution, of course... hehe
>>3231021"If that were true, our situation would be dire indeed. Thankfully, reaching contact with Demons isn't so easy. It implies renouncing God and his Sequitur and has other conditions and details in accordance to the Demon in question. Usually, Demons use those who do reach to them as intermediaries to expand their influence in the mortal world. Sometimes, Demons may actively seek to contact one single person but this is rare, and usually involved in higher eschelons of life, which are closely watched by Clerics and Inquisitors.""The Demonic intermediaries have various names according to local culture. The Inquisition is doing its best to spread a single word for them: Cambions. Cambions are very hard to find and these searches often involve tracking down rumours and hearsay. The Corrupted are bound not to say their Cambion's name, so a simple interrogation is not a solution.">>3231056"Though I've already replied above, your examples are fitting. Ancient manuscripts, Corrupted beasts in the woods with sentience, or weak and not-so-weak Demons seeking prey, these are all possible ways of contact. There are many failsafes, and Demons often modify the requirements for finding them, informing only the most trusted of their Cambions, if only to keep themselves out of the Inquisitions grasp. This might weaken their influence for a time, but it keeps them in the game. A Demon with no followers is much too weak to even contact humans, outside of very specific cases.""How old? The Church itself was formed when the Messiah came to us two millenia ago. The Organizations came later, as the Church expanded and its duties became unbearable for one single entity to deal with."

Doing a quick little epilogue, I wonder if this thread is going to bump.
>>3238645There were quite a few things you had not taken into consideration when it came to taking Jen in. One of them was that she is little more than an uneducated slum-kid, apt in pickpocketing and lying but little else. She did not know how to read, and teaching her would take months if not a whole year. You'll have to impart classes orally, teach her numbers and the most basic of knowledges. Only after that could you actually teach her how to become a proper, well-groomed Inquisitor. Still, Riva was not a safe city, so it would only be normal to teach her basics of combat during her stay with you. It sounded worth it anyhow, a Blessed child is not a common find.Your thoughts dissipated when Jen spoke up, you saw how you were spinning around an empty pen and she seemed impressed by such an idiotic skill."How do you do that, Inquisitor?"It is good that she spoke to you formally, that much she learned. You tell her it's little more than a trick with the fingers, easy to learn."Can you teach me?">"Sure.">"Focus on important things."
>>3238651>Focus on important things"You will form such habits in time"
>>3238651>"Focus on important things."
>>3238682Her disappointment is palpable."Shouldn't you do that too? You were just thinking at your desk right now!"You tell her what you were thinking about at your desk. Then explain that, sometimes, meditating and planning your next actions was most useful, so long as you don't get stuck in a foolish loop of thoughts. Her pose grows slightly more awkward, like a scolded child's."Excuse me, Inquisitor. I should've thought of my words more."You nod. Jen goes on back to her chair and simple desk that you brought in for her, glossing over a copy of 'The Inquisition', Inquisitor Gendry's gigantic work on the ins and outs of the Inquisition and its history, a must have for any reputable library. She can only look at the pictures, but most of them are drawn with great attention to detail. You order Jen to remind you of the first paragraph of the book. She duly responds."An Inquisitor is a tool for destroying Corruption. It is neither a man nor a woman, it is a hunter whose sole purpose is to save Mankind from the grip of Demons. His past life is forfeit, his old deeds gone, his new life is Holy, his new deeds glorious."Her droning voice is pleasant to your ears. The girl memorized that one quickly even if she doesn't quite understand the whole meaning of it yet. Forfeiting one's old identity is hard, but is a requirement to serve God and his Sequitur faithfully, without regret or second thoughts. You ask her for the line on Corruption you taught her. Again she drones."Corruption is evil made flesh. It is the taint of the Demons' eternal jealousy. It is the curse borne from the Great Grudge. It is a-" She pauses for a second, you see the struggle in her visage mixed in with shame."A-... Ana-..."You smile. Will she be able?"Anaaa-..."Her voice melts and breaks."I'm sorry.">Finish the line for her.>Reprimand her for not remembering.
>>3238819>>Finish the line for her
"Ah, thank you. 'It is anathema'."Her voice shows genuine gratefulness."I had never heard that word before meeting you."You explain to her the meaning of it, it is a dire word to pronounce, only reserved for Corruption and Demons. "I see..."Her reply seemed dry, the girl returned to her book right after. You would pry in to what bothers her, but you've other things to prepare for now. The Clerics have some answers to give, and you've heard of some Undead issues in the slums that must be dealt with fortwith... May God grant respite to this city soon.----Time to head off, thanks for the votes boys. See you tomorrow in a new thread.
I have to delay the session to tomorrow at around 3-4PM gmt+1, sorry guys.
