In the last years of the 20th century, the world of professional wrestling has begun to see a shift, as the Monday Night Wars rage on, and UPW’s Warzone goes up against GCW’s Nitro every week, the tone of the business itself has begun to shift. Gone were the cartoonish heroes of the Rock n’ Wrestling Era, and in their place stood edgier, more adult-oriented characters, with deeper moral complexities. The final nail in the coffin occurred in July of 1996, when one of the last remaining heroes of the last era, Hawk Hogan officially revealed himself as a traitor to GCW and joined The Illuminati, now as Hollywood Hawk Hogan. The Illuminati as a faction was an overnight success, and for the first time since the 1980s, the world was watching professional wrestling again, including you. In fact, it was on a monday night when you found the advertisement in the news. The ad, which, in plain black and white printed out that Attitude Championship Wrestling was searching for individuals interested in becoming professional wrestlers. Seeing as you've been unsuccesfully searching for a job for a month, and the listed address was only a few blocks away from your own apartment, you figured it wouldn't hurt to at least check it out. > Welcome, it’s a wrestling quest! > You will control a young rookie as he embarks on his journey to become a professional wrestler at the beginnings of wrestling’s most successful period in history. > Have fun!
>>3217361> January 4th, 1997> Southern PhiladelphiaYou stand, nervously in the middle of the old, stained ring in a quiet, poorly lit gym. You’re lined up with the rest of the other recruits, or at least, you imagine they all came here for the same thing. There are eight recruits total, including you, but you haven’t spoken to any of them, you just entered and then the large, scary looking man standing by the door told you to get in the ring, and you did what you were told, apparently waiting for someone. Before you got too tired of standing around in the ring, the front doors to the gym swung open, and two men strolled in, one of them, a short & pudgy man wearing a baseball cap over long, greasy dark hair, pulled back in a ponytail. The other man was taller, and in better shape, but was also older, and his body showed plenty of scars and wear & tear from years of use in the wrestling ring. Both men look over the rookies standing in the ring, before the smaller of the two finally speaks, breaking the tension that’s been thick in the room since you entered. “Good afternoon everyone! My name is Paulie Scarsdale, I’m the owner and head of creative of Attitude Championship Wrestling,” he says, his voice captivating and his manner of speaking charismatic, it was clear he was a trained speaker. “I’m assuming all of you are here because you’re interested in training to become a wrestler.” “This,” Paulie points towards the larger man, “is Charlie Black, he’s a hardcore wrestling legend, and he’s going to be training some of you. I say some of you, because many, if not all of you will likely drop out before you make it to graduation day.” You gulp, and as if sensing a sign of weakness, Paulie enters the ring, and steps up closer to you. “Let’s start with you? What’s your name?” “Luke, sir.” You manage to say, trying your best to sound confident. “Luke Graham.” “Why are you here, kid?” He asks, his piercing gaze and sharp tone of voice making you hesitate to answer a fairly simple question. You respond, rubbing the back of your ead as you answer. You feel a bit strange admitting it, but it's also true that if you hadn't recently reconnected with Nick and gotten the urging from him to take the offer, you likely wouldn't have even gone to this tryout, since you've never exactly seen yourself as a wrestler. Paulie raises an eyebrow and whistles, "Alright kid, you got me interested now. Who's the mystery man?" "Well, he wrestles for UPW, now, as The Mutilator. I think in ACW he worked as Cactus Nick, right?" You hope you remembered his ring-name right, but from what he told you, he was a fairly big deal in ACW, and from the snippets of him you've seen working monday nights, he seemed to be doing well for himself in UPW, too. As you namedrop him, you feel all eyes on you, as if for the first time everyone in the gym is staring at you. You hear some shocked whispers from your fellow rookies, and even the so-far unwavering Charlie Black seems shocked by your statement. "Well, I'll be damned," Charlie finally speaks as he steps into the ring, his voice ringing out through the gym. "I was gonna say you didn't look like you'd last a day's worth of training, but if Nick speaks up for you, I guess you can't be too bad. I respect his judgement." Stroking his chin, he looks you up and down. "Although, you really don't look like that much. What can you do, kid?" You blink, not quite sure what to say. "Uh... how do you mean?" He sighs, running a hand through his thinning hair. "In terms of the ring, your athleticism, your charisma. What are you good at doing? Any idea?" You nod, despite your overall lack of experience, Nick did spent a full day with you working over the basics of in-ring work and covering the various fundamentals of wrestling before your audition. During that time, he helped outline your strengths and weaknesses. > Please select two skills you excell in and one you struggle with. > STRIKING> TECHNICAL> SUBMISSION> FLYING> CHARISMA> POWER> HARDCORE> TOUGHNESS

Much more than that is... kinda freaky." You're a bit hesitant to admit you have a bit of a fear of heights in this macho wrestling environment. For some reason you feel like that might be looked down upon. Charlie nods, looking you up and down again, seemingly reevaluating you. "You got a gimmick?" You pause. "A what?" He sighs, "A character. Did Nick help you figure out one of those?" "Oh!" He did actually mention it, and he described the ideas behind it fairly well, although he didn't actually do much to help you figure out a gimmick of your own. "Uh, no." You say, trying not to think of Black's stare in the exact same way you'd think of a father's disappointing glare. Charlie nods, "Figures. Alright, well..." He steps back from you, looking up the line of the rest of the rookies. Finally, he points at the man on the other end of the line, an imposing figure with a seemingly permanent half-crazed stare and a form that's almost wider than he is tall. "What's your name?" "Byson." The rookie replies gruffly.Charlie raises an eyebrow at him, "You know how to work?" Byson nods, "Well enough." Charlie smiles at his reply, seemingly a lot more happy with this trainee than you. "Alright, everyone except Byson and Luke, out of the ring!" You blink as everyone else starts to shuffle towards the ropes and get out of the ring, even Paulie Scarsdale is quiet, content just to watch. Soon, the ring is left with just you, Byson and Charlie Black standing between you. Now that the ring is mostly empty, you really get a sense of how big Byson really is as he glares menacingly at you. "Alright," Charlie says. "You two, show me what you got, I'll serve as ref." You gulp, you don't feel prepared for this at all, but now you were supposed to wrestle against not only a beast of a human, but also a beast with significantly more training than you. You get the feeling your new trainer may not like you very much. > [TECH] Go for a collar and elbow hold.> [STRIKE] Just hit him in the face as hard as you can. > [FLY] Try for a surprise dropkick.> [CHA] Go for a handshake.

You can hear the rest of the trainees react loudly, none of them were expecting that, least of all your opponent. As he staggers back, Byson battles to to clear his head and stay on his feet, but you press the advantage before he can gather himself. You rush forward, rocking Byson back even further with a few more strikes, until he's pushed back, resting up against the ropes. You grin and hit him with a pair of powerful chops, the sound of which echoes through the small, cramped gym. Not wanting to waste anytime or give Byson anything to possibly capitalize on, you quickly grab one of his arms and then with all your might, whip him into the opposite ropes. It's difficult to do, since he outweighs you by at least 50 lbs. You'd hate to be on the recieving end of an attack from him, especially if he got the chance to run at you first. Hopefully, you won't slip up and you'll be able to keep at least a few steps ahead of him before he can regain his footing. You turn, rushing towards the ropes opposing Byson, turning just as you hit them and bouncing back. You hold out your arm as you charge forward at Byson, trying not to let his size and ferocious appearance frighten you. At the very least you've kept up the pace and control of this match so far. You're at fairly equal height, so he runs straight into your arm, which slams into his collarbone and neck, sending him collapsing to the ground and even you tumbling down too. You catch yourself, and quickly hop back up to your feet. Now, you needed to lift him up off the ground and drop him down onto his head.As you struggle and strain to raise him off the mat, his fighting instincts seem to kick in, and he suddenly starts struggling, smashing his fists into your sides. You wince at the heavy blows, and although you manage to get him up off the air, you aren't able to hold him up, and soon enough you're forced to let go. He's on you before you can gather yourself, hitting you with a devastating headbutt. You're unable to withstand Byson's barrage, and soon you've fallen down to the mat. You've done better than expected for your first match, that's certain, but you can just picture the look on Charlie Black's face when he's forced to raise your hand as the victor. Unfortunately for you, you're not going to be winning off of a lowblow, as before you manage to connect with your kick, Byson reaches down, grabbing your foot with one of his hands, and stopping you right in your tracks. After that, a still lariat is more than enough to take you off your feet and leave you seeing stars. You struggle to rise back up to your feet, dazed and confused. The shot was so hard you think you might have blacked out for a second, you don't even remember the feeling of falling, you simply went from standing to on the mat without a moment in between. Just before he makes contact with you, you grab him, tucking his head under your arm which is fairly simple since he's already in position for it. Then, with in one swift motion, you fall backwards, driving the top of his head directly into the mat, with the momentum of his spear behind the DDT. Byson is left seemingly unconscious, laying face-down in the mat. You sit up, and strugge to push the heavy man so he's laying with his shoulders down. Eventually, you roll his body over and lay your shoulders and arms on top of him, hooking one of his legs and using your body weight to try to keep him from kicking out at all costs. 1...2...3!Byson manages to snap out of it and kick out immediately after Charlie brings his hand down for the three-count, but he was too late. You can barely believe it, but you won the match! Byson glares at you as he rolls out of the ring, and you hope that won't become an issue for you later on, but for now, you're primarily focused on the referee of the match. Charlie offers his hand to you, helping you up from the mat. "That was a hell of a match, kid. Especially for a rookie like you. Maybe I misjudged you, I think I might get what Nick saw in you after all." You try not to beam too much at the praise from the veteran, but you can't help but feel proud of yourself. Even though you're absolutely exhausted, and all of Byson's hits on you still hurt quite a lot, you at the very least managed to prove Charlie wrong. You step out of the ring, and Paulie walks up to you, a grin on his face. "That's the kinda stuff I like to see, kid! You gotta lot of potential. You might even be a star one day, if you keep working on it." He holds out his hand, "Welcome to ACW, Luke." You blink. "Really? Thank you!" You reach out and rapidly shake his hand. A part of you still wasn't sure you'd impressed enough to make it to the promotion. You almost expected there was more to it somehow, as if you still needed to prove yourself. "What do I do now?" He chuckles, "For now, you should head home and get some rest, I'm sure you're beat. Your first day of training is on Monday, and your first show is on Tuesday. They're both gonna be here. Don't you dare be late for either." You nod, "Thanks again." Paulie turns back towards the ring, where now two of the women are having their own tryout match. Paulie was right, you are absolutely exhausted after your match, so it's good that you get to go home. Eventually, you get yourself up and take a shower, changing into less sweaty clothes. After you're clean and changed, you pick up the phone and dial Nick's number, which you've memorized by now. He's been your friend since you were kids, and even though nowadays he's off on tour with UPW most of the time, you do try to keep in contact. After a while of the phone ringing, he picks up. "Luke! How are you?" He chirps, cheerfully. "I got the job!" You respond, excited. "I went to the tryouts, and it went well, I guess. I start on Monday." "That's great! I knew you'd do well. You picked it up pretty well in our training session. Good news is, UPW and ACW work together. Maybe we'll be able to wrestle together soon enough." Nick says."Really?" You ask, you didn't know ACW and UPW worked together? The colorful image of UPW you have in your head seems so distinct from the grimy gym you were in earlier. The idea of those two worlds crossing over sounds bizarre. "Maybe I can talk to Vince, convince him to put us in a tag match together. Or maybe even against each other. Do you know what your gimmick is gonna be yet?""No, not really. I just had a match, didn't work on the character that much. I have no idea about any of that, to be honest." You sigh, it'd be easier if you could just wrestle as yourself and not have to worry about any of this gimmick stuff. Nick, seeming to notice your frustration, "I can help out, if you want. Sometimes all you need is a good brainstorming session." "Well, actually, I was thinking we could go out to celebrate tonight. That is, if you're free." You say, you haven't really gotten much free time recently to hang out with him, due to how often he's on the road for UPW."You're in luck, because I am free, and I can get Colette to watch the kids tonight. The boys are all going out too, I think. How do you want to celebrate?" > Go out drinking with Nick.> Try to work out your gimmick.> Tag along with the UPW locker room.> Write-in.

>>3227407>>3227411>>3227413>>3227462>>3227504You suggest heading out to the bar, having a few drinks and brainstorming your gimmick to Nick, he agrees, and you both head out to meet up at the bar. It's a short walk from your apartment, as most places you visit are, since you are way too broke to own a car. The bar is the same place you and Nick have been going to for as long as you've been able to drink, a small rundown bar tucked into a dirty street corner in southern Philadelphia called Bockwinkel's originally opened by legendary professional wrestler Frank Bockwinkel upon his retirement, nowadays it's mostly empty, although the occasional wrestling supergeek and few regular patrons the bar has keep it afloat. You enter the bar, and immediately walk over towards the table you always sit at, waving at the familiar face of Frank, tending the bar almost by instinct. However, you quickly realize something's off, when instead of the grumpy old man you expected to see, a young woman is tending the bar instead. You walk over, confused. There's no way this bar makes enough money for Frank to hire a new employee. "Hiya, can I get you something?" The woman asks, flashing you a friendly grin. "Uh... maybe. Who are you?" You ask, scratching the back of your head. She laughs. "You're a charmer. I'm Mona, nice to meet you. I'm working for Mr. Bockwinkel." You nod, "Yeah, that's the part I'm sorta confused about. Is he like, paying you?" She looks at you skeptically, "Sorta. He's training me, in return, I help him out around the bar." Your eyes go wide. The girl looks tiny, and also so innocent you doubt she could ever even hurt a fly. The idea of her in the ring seems a little absurd, especially after some of the characters you saw at your audition earlier. > Order a drink and go wait for Nick to arrive. > Ask her about her training. > Bring up your new job. > Try to flirt with her.
