“It’s time!” you celebrate out loud, “The annual trip to the mountains!” The other club members have varying levels of excitement. But for you, for one weekend, you no longer are subjected to Miku’s constant endless onslaught of noodles. Finally, freedom. You don’t have the heart to tell her you’re sick of it, especially since she tries her hardest to switch things up, so you do the adult thing: don’t say anything at all and hope she stops. She does not.And strangely enough, you haven’t heard from Aya since the ink incident. That’s something you’re glad for, though you are curious whether or not the “ghost” was truly “exorcised” or not. Then again, who cares about that? You say, “Yesss! It’s going to be great. This time, I won’t forget bug repellant; I won’t make the same mistake twice!”Nemuri, unnerved at watching you, says, “...You seem excited. Is it really that fun? I didn’t realize there was anything to do there.”You reply, “There’s lots of things to do! There’s all sorts of activities, and the trail is so nice, even if you don’t like hiking, you’ll enjoy it.” She’s unimpressed.Miku nods, “And the inn we stay at is really amazing too! It’s so big, fancy, and spacious, I’m surprised the whole school gets to go every year with how much it costs to stay. Wait ‘till you see the hot springs!”Hinami happily adds, “There’s also the test of courage. It’s actually scary, too! Though, I think being out in the middle of nowhere helps too.”Unconvinced, Nemuri says, “A weekend of something I’m seriously bad with, yay.”She’s acting as if it was torture.>”Come on, it’ll be fun. “Come on, it’ll be fun. Trust me.”“I don’t think your version of ‘fun’ is the same as mine,” she replies, “Especially since you have to bring bug spray.”“Sheesh, if you hate it that much, then you can always pretend you have a leg cramp or something. There’s non-hiking things to do too.”She pauses for a moment, actually contemplating what you said. “Senpai, I knew you were smart,” she says with a growing smile, “I can always come up with an excuse.”Happy, Miku says, “That’s means you’re going, right?”Hinami adds, “It would be a shame if you missed it. It’s one of those experiences you won’t forget.”“Oh!” Miku exclaims, “I almost forgot, speaking of this whole thing, I talked to Hanako the other day. She asked if we wanted to be the ones setting up the test of courage. Actually, the people who were supposed to do it got sick, and apparently we’re their next best choice.” You frown. “That just sounds like they don’t want to do it and they’re forcing it onto us.”“They’re not forcing it, they’re just asking us. It’s okay to say no, you know?”Nemuri mumbles, “Not that I’m interested in it, but what’s the point if you’re not actually going through it?”You wonder.>”I don’t mind helping out.”>”Nemuri’s got a point.”>”What do you think?”>Write-in.

“I don’t mind helping out,” you say, “Might actually be more fun than going through it yourself.”Hinami says, “I’ll help too! I-I always wanted to see what it’s like being the ones doing the scaring.”To Nemuri, Miku says, “If you don’t want to, you don’t have to—“No,” she replies, shaking her head, “Since everyone’s doing it, I’ll go too.”With a mixed expression, Miku replies, “You’re making it sound like I’m dragging you into this!”“Huh? You’re not?” Nemuri asks with a straight face. You cut in, “We got this, easy! Especially with Hinami helping, we’ll put on the most terrifying show they’ve ever seen.”Nemuri groans. “You’re way too excited. You’re not going to keep this up the entire time, are you?”You are.A few days later, you stand in a line to a bus, eager to get on. While you remember last year’s trip being half-ruined because you were terribly unprepared, this time, you made sure you were well-armed. The skies are clear, the soft din of everyone’s chatter surround you.The chance of rain ruining everything is zero. You’re in the back of the line, one the last few getting on the last bus. As you prepare to enter, you spot someone running toward you.It’s...>Miku.>Nemuri.>Hinami.
>>2947730I guess whoever it is is running late, then? Miku I could see due to 'childhood friendship' stuff, or Hinami getting last minute supplies for the spooking. Probably Hinami, in that case. Also, its nice seeing Ryuuta so excited about the outdoors. Makes me want to go camp in the mountains again.
“...Hinami?” you say out loud.Panting, she runs up to you before you get on. “Don’t leave without me!” she says between breaths, “I-I missed my bus.” You notice she didn’t exactly pack light. The teacher checks the seats with a glance and tells her, “There’s room. We were getting ready to go, too. Good timing!” He laughs as he hurries both of you in.As you make your way to some empty seats, you ask, “You didn’t oversleep, did you?”“N-no!” she replies, “I kind of lost track of time while packing things.” She struggles a bit as she tries to shove her bag into the overhead bin. “I wanted to make sure we were prepared for the test.”“Looking forward to it, huh?” you point out, “That was really close; what would you have done if you were late by a minute more?”There’s panic on her face. “Um, er, I-I guess I wouldn’t have just missed the trip. No, wait, I know where the inn is, maybe I could get a family member to drive me there. Ah, it would’ve been fine!” she says, “I mean, I can’t let everyone down, right?” Finally, she sits down after stuffing everything up there. “What did you bring?”“I thought we would have everything we need at the site since everyone leaves things there, but I did bring a bunch of flashlights and a multitool just in case,” you say, “What about you?”Hinami hesitates. The bus door closes, and after a second, the bus starts moving. She answers, “A lot.”Air shoots out your nose. “Yeah, I saw. Is it a secret?”“It’s a surprise!” she answers, “You’ll see. Oh, I was late also because I was looking for this—“ Hinami searches her bag for a moment before taking something out. “I thought it could make the ride a little less boring.”“Tarot cards?” you ask, then you read it out loud, “Magical Kuma Tarot... is this from a cartoon?”With a small laugh, she replies, “I don’t know, I just remembered Miku gave it to me as a present. I never used it before.” She opens the deck box and asks, “Do you have a question you want answered? Or a topic you’re interested in?”You watch as she takes out the cards. “Um, it’s hard to think of something—“ you stop when you see Hinami going through the cards. “What is that?!”“...It’s in a different language,” Hinami replies, completely ignoring the picture on the card. “And I think Miku forgot to give me the instructions on reading this deck. I, uh, I guess we’ll be making it up,” she says with an awkward laugh.“What is this supposed to be?!” you ask, taking one of the cards out and looking at it. It portrays a girl in a frilly dress sumo-wrestling with a truck and winning. You glance down and find words that are unreadable.“I think that’s The High Priestess,” she says, “Based on the number of words and who’s in it...” She blinks, and then she quickly says, “I mean, I could be wrong.” She takes the card back from you and shuffles the deck. “Ah, well, at this this’ll be new. Ryuuta, have you come up with a question yet?”Turning you head, you take a look out the window for inspiration. “Uh, will this trip be fun? Or will it be ruined by ghosts and demons?”Using her lap, she lays out three cards, explaining, “One to symbolize what will happen to you, one for the others, and one for what will happen. Short and simple.” Both of you break into laughter when you notice the ridiculous card back of someone on top of a bear with a magic bow in their hands, the string and arrow made of light. “Okay, the first one,” she says, flipping it over to show seven spears falling from a rooftop, reversed. “Um, seven of... something?”“I’m not going to be impaled by seven spears, am I?”“No,” she says, stifling a laugh, “Clearly, it means you’re going feel more daring this time around.”“Clearly,” you repeat.“The second one—“ she then flips over the second card, which is of a little girl with long hair holding a scythe, upright. “Death.”“Everyone’s going to die?!”“No!” she says, “I-it doesn’t actually mean death! It just means something is going to end.”You gasp, “Their lives?!”“Noo!” she exclaims, slapping your arm, “Think of something more abstract! Maybe something like the trip? Oh, forget it, let’s just see what the third one is,” she says turning over the last one. It’s a picture of the moon and someone drinking wine underneath the night sky, also upright. “...An illusion? There’ll be some kind of trick during the trip, I see.”“So that’s a yes on the ghosts, huh?”Hinami hums, “I wouldn’t say that...” She puts the cards back and shuffles then again, “Do you want to try?”She offers it to you.>”Are you sure? “Sure, give it over.” You take the deck from her and give it a quick shuffle. “I don’t need to purge it of energies or whatever, do I?”“I think no matter how hard we try, we’ll never get rid of the spirit of Magical Kuma that lives inside it, so don’t worry about it. As for my topic, I’ll go with the test of courage.”You joke, “Hey, aren’t you spoiling yourself of what’s going to happen?”She jests, covering her mouth when she says this, “Should I really worry? You’re the one who’s doing the reading.”“I’ll pretend that was a compliment,” you say, “Okay, here we go. The first one will be you, the second will be will be people who go through it, and the third will be the test itself. Creative and original, I know.” You lay out three cards on your lap as Hinami peers over. Turning the first one over, you see that it shows a bear with five salmon fished out of the river with a single clamp of its jaw. It’s legendary. “Five of fish upright, clearly, it means fortune will be in your favor today. You’ll get what you want, huh?”“Wait, I could be the fish,” she points out while trying to hide a grin. She takes out a bottle of water.“Unless you reveal you’re part of a set of quintuplets, I don’t think that’s happening,” you say, “The second one—is the ace of spears, apparently.” You take a look at the card, and then at her. “They’re going to spear you.” You show the picture of a bear spearing someone very vividly and neon-pink liquid flying out.Hinami chokes and starts coughing up the water that went down the wrong way. “Ryuuta!”“In other words, they’re going to defeat you completely,” you say, “Wow, grim.”“You are actually unbelievable,” she says, “Okay, what’s the third one?”“I’m getting to it!” You turn the third one over and reveal... “I have no idea.” You stare it for a while before Hinami peers over to take a look at it herself. It’s picture of a single flower standing in a barren field, and the card itself is upright. Drops of water are falling onto the flower. “Well, it’s a major arcana... probably.”“Temperance?” she says, ending it on a high note as if she wasn’t sure.“This is one hell of a deck,” you point out, “And Magical Kuma must be one hell of a show.”Hinami leans back in her seat. “What does it mean then? You’re the one doing the readings, right?”You have no idea.>”Something... good?”>”It must be something bad.”>”Maybe something surprising will happen.”>Write-in.

Hesitant and slow at first, you begin to say, “Maybe something surprising will happen,” you say, “Maybe it means to relax, keep calm, and have a good time even if something were to go wrong.” Your eyes go from the cards, then to Hinami. You can’t help but add, “Probably. No guarantees.”“I think that was good. Wow, I didn’t know you were a natural at this,” she says. You feel like that comment should have been sarcastic, but if it came from her, it’s probably genuine. ”I think you’d make a fine fortune teller.”“No way! That is definitely not the job for me,” you reply. As you put the cards back and shuffle them, you notice that the people across from the aisle have been watching. And one of them is familiar. “Daisuke?” You really hope you got his name right, because you haven’t seen him at all since Miku told him to sit in a circle and threw salt at him. He’s sitting beside someone else.He says to you, “Hey, Ryuuta! It’s been a while; how’s it going?” He introduces the person beside him as his girlfriend Izumi, and you introduce Hinami. As a club member, obviously. You wonder if that’s the same person who put that love letter in his locker.Izumi, very obviously holding herself back, says to the two of you, “Wow, can you actually read fortunes?”Hinami nods, “W-we can try, though I don’t think they’re always 100% accurate. Things can always change.”She quickly replies, “Can you read ours then? Hinami replies, “We’ll be glad to.”“Yay!” Izumi cheers, “So how does this whole thing work?”While you shuffle the cards some more, Hinami quickly explains how it works. Since there isn’t much room, there aren’t many options to work with in the first place. When you’re done scrambling the deck, you hand it over to Hinami. “The first card would be for Daisuke, the second for Izumi, and the third would be how everything would go. Okay, here we go.”Three cards go down precariously near the edge of Hinami’s seat, and the first one is flipped. “Seven of spears...?”“Hm,” you say.Izumi, leaning forward on the edge of her seat, asks, “What does it mean?”Hinami answers, “It means he’ll be more daring, willing to make more risks with you around.”“Oooh,” she says.Meanwhile, Diasuke slowly nods, “I see... That does seem true.”Going over to the second card, Hinami flips it over, revealing an upright moon. “The moon.”You mumble, “Hold on a minute, isn’t that...?”She continues without stopping. “Izumi, you’ll be insecure of your relationship at times and feel lost, but if you keep holding strong, then you’ll overcome anything.” Hearing this, Izumi nods, listening intently. Finally, Hinami’s hands move to the last one, and when she turns it, she and you instantly recognize it as death.“H-hold on,” you say, “I don’t think I shuffled it right. Sorry about that, that was a bad reading.” You instantly scoop the cards up and take the deck out of Hinami’s hands, shuffling them all over again. While you make sure this time you have them mixed, you say, “After a reading, you need to get the energies out before doing a new one.”You wonder if Izumi or Daisuke buys it, though Izumi says, “Oh, okay. Yeah, that makes sense.”Handing the deck back to Hinami, you wonder what were the odds of that happening. She says, “I’ll try that again.” She lays down three cards, and takes a look at you before flipping the first card. You say nothing, and when she turns it, it’s the seven of spears. This time, it’s reversed. “Haha, wow,” she nervously says, “Um, reversed means...” You watch the gears in her mind turn. “You’ll be more careful and cautious. Basically the opposite of the reading before, you get it.” Daisuke only nods, and Hinami moves to turn the second card. An upright moon. His eyes widen, then he lets out a forced laugh. “Wow, that’s weird. Ryuuta, are you playing a trick on me?”You reply, “No! It’s just... chance, I guess. Wow, what are the odds?” You turn to Hinami to see if she’s doing anything weird, and she has the same look as you. Those three cards were definitely stuck back into the deck.Weakly, Hinami says, “Then, the third one...” An upright death. “Ah...”“W-what? This is freaky,” Izumi says, intently looking at it. “What does it mean?”What are the chances of this happening? One in a million? No, you’re sure it’s less than that, and yet...[1/2 oops]

Otherwise, it might start some catastrophic feedback loop where they think their relationship is going to crash and they start acting out because of it and their relationship suffers even further. You can’t have that at all costs, because if it is going down for some weird cosmic reason, it won’t be because of you or Hinami!“...A new beginning,” you say, “It symbolizes the start of something new, a change in your routine.” After all, there’s no way a card with this kind of picture is going to demolish them like a wrecking ball.Izumi, turning to Daisuke, says, “Did you hear that? I wonder what that means! Ooh, it’s so mysterious.”He pulls her in, telling her, “I can’t wait to find out with you.”These two need to get a room. The two of them thank you and Hinami for all of that, and Hinami puts away the deck. When she’s sure the other two aren’t listening and busy talking with themselves, she whispers to you, “That wasn’t very nice of you.”“It wasn’t me! You saw me mixing up the deck. It was freak statistical anomaly or something.”She frowns, “I’m sure that’s impossible. Drawing the same three cards again?”“Unlikely, but not impossible,” you point out, “That’s probably the craziest thing that will ever happen in my entire life, and no one except us four will believe it.”Hinami, concerned, replies very quietly. “I saw it, and I believe in a lot of things, but...”You stay quiet.Maybe Magical Kuma is watching over you.[1/2]

Waiting until no one’s watching you, you decide to break off to go somewhere else. Off the trail you go, and past a handful of trees, you see another trail. It’s smaller, but it’s well-worn. Though the sun is still in the sky, you walk along it, as if tracing the steps you took last year. The din of the others fade away as you climb higher, the trail twisting and turning as it leads you farther and farther up. Halfway to the end, you stop where the trees lesson to take a look at everything behind and below. You find yourself breathless, swept away by the wind as you feel how small you are.“Boo!” A pair of hands grab onto your shoulders and you flinch in surprise and terror. When you recognize that voice, you relax and turn around, taking her hands off you. Nemuri grins at you. “You jumped.”“Who the hell wouldn’t?” you reply. “How did you get here?”“I told them I had a cramp, and then I got bored, so I snuck out. I asked someone where this was since Hinami was so excited about it, and here I am,” she replies, “Scaring the life out of you.”You sigh and start walking again. “It’s dangerous to go alone, you know?”“You’re alone,” she replies.“I’ve been here before, and I know where the trails go.”“Then,” she says, thinking for a moment, “Be my guide. Where does this one lead?”“Something like a cliff. There’s a bunch of flags up there, and at the end of the test, you take one before climbing down the other side to prove you did it.”Nemuri looks at you expectantly.>”Want to go see it?”>”We should head back.”>”We’re not in a hurry.”>”Want me to tell you about the test last year instead?”>Write-in.

The following minute is spent without a word from either of you, and she’s the first to say something. “What’s your favorite part about the trip? Just so I know what I can look forward to.”One look at her and you can tell there’s more to it, but you don’t bother to find out. “...The atmosphere?” you say, “It feels... like I’m free.” One step after another, you see the end of the trail drawing close.“Mmmm,” Nemuri hums, “It is perfect for a nap. I think I might just lay down and have one.”“We’re almost there, come on,” you say, “People say the flag is the prize at the end, but I’d say it’s the view.” You climb atop a pile of rocks and lift yourself up, skipping a part of the trail. Extending a hand downward at Nemuri, you wonder if she’ll take it or decide to go the long way.Staring at it for a moment, she chooses the former, and you help lift her up.She murmurs, “So this is what you like, huh?”“What was that?” you ask, turning around briefly.“Nothing,” she replies, “I see it.” Pointing at something in the distance, you make it out to a single flag left from last year, marking the goal. The foliage and trees open up here into a clearing that stops at a fenced-off edge, and to the side, there’s a tiny path that leads back down. If you didn’t know it was there, you wouldn’t have seen it.Walking the fence, you hold your breath as the forest below, the city past, and the waters beyond slide into your view. And, you say, “At night, this is the perfect spot to see the stars.”Nemuri looks down, and she says, “Senpai, has anyone ever told you that you were an idiot?”“What’s this about?” you ask, annoyed.“You could’ve shown it to me during the test, you know, when we can actually see the stars. When you give it a light tug, you find that’s embedded deep, perhaps stuck on something. You say, “Alright. Once upon a time, there was a gang of thieves. They killed, stole, and did whatever they wanted to the people who lived in the village by the base of the mountain. The villagers lived in fear until one day, the village head had enough and banded them all together. They would rather die than to lie another day at the whims of the thieves, so they took their farming equipment as weapons and waiting for the thieves’ return. Though they took them by surprise, they lost a lot of men, and at the end, only a handful of the villagers remained. The head of the thieves, sacrificing his men, used the only people who he could call friends to finish off the rest of the village. As he walked past the empty houses, he saw a reflection of himself in a washbasin. He had grown horns and transformed into a demon. In horror, he fled into the mountains into hiding, attacking anyone who would dare disturb him.”You rip the flag out of the ground and see that there was a stone attached to the end of it, which used to plant it into the ground. “And now, we scare him for fun. We like to live on the edge, huh?”Nemuri watches you as you put the flag back into place. “Do you think he would’ve done the same thing if he knew he would turn into a demon? You don’t need 20/20 foresight for that.”“Probably,” you say, “He was already a demon. It’s not like you could change who you are because you want to.”“I don’t think that’s true,” she says, “I think if you try, you can do anything.”[1/2]

It’s not nice for someone to shut down their kouhai’s dreams, even if the end's clear as day.” Without another word, she gets off and starts walking down the smaller path, leaving you to pile the earth back around the base of the flag. You really don’t get her sometimes.[Chapter 5: “If I Can See The Future,” - End]

Fun. I'd be down for these one-day quests if you did them weekly.
