Hello again fellow creators/questers. Today we will be continuing the Essari EvoGame World. For this thread we will be focusing on the ecological developments of present day Essari, rather than it's currently developing civilizations. Evolutions in this thread will have been endemic to Essari as of the last 30 million years having spawned as either speciations (region/habitat specific) or divergent evolutions, of already existing organisms on Essari. As GM, I'll be actively observing the thread, making sure to catalog and note any new evolutions, as myself and you the creators help to flesh out the diversity of life on Essari, one biome at a time. How to play:• Select an extant organism, open an image of the species in MS Paint, Photoshop, etc; make an evolutionary change to that species, save as .PNG, and post it with a description about the evolution and why.• Please indicate which extant organism your new organism derived from, the region it lives in, and any other important details about your organism.• Details regarding an organisms size or name aren't necessary, but are heavily encouraged.• Nothing too outlandish. The new organisms being introduced in these threads would be no more than 30 million years old.• An example on how complex evolutions on an extant organism can be will be shown in a later post.Notes:• All organisms in these threads MUST have evolved from one of the extant organisms mentioned in the attached Dossier.• Evolutions may include the developments of symbiotic relationships that can even be relationships created via domestication.• Every 24-36 hours, I will be rotating the focus of evolutions into specific habitats where organisms may only be evolved for these habitats.• Each ecosystem will include it's own size restraints for plants and animals as well as environmental complications that organisms will need to be specialized for.• This is Thread 3 of 3 for the Essari Biodiversification Mini-sagaNew to the Game?:•The Essari series is now a multi-year saga entailing the development of life and now civilization on the world. The game has shifted towards a CivEvo centric game, but I'm leaving enough tools and information behind to allow new players to easily enter the world and make their own contributions to it.• We have a Discord to keep you up to date on EvoGame stuff, and chat with other folks. https://discord.gg/kk8eJgJ• In order to save crucial Image space for new posts, the full resolutions images + the blank new organism template can be found in this gallery. (https://imgur.com/a/HnmWypv) • The world map and in-depth details on Essari's geography and habitats can be found here. (https://imgur.com/a/OcxFwrT) Above is the comprehensive dossier detailing all the existing organisms of Essari, their range, and ecological niche. Information on the first round of evolutions in the next post.
--Habitat Focus: Island--There are tens of thousands of islands, each one a world in miniature, a microcosm of our living planet. The struggles to survive on these remote lands reflect the challenges faced by all life on Essari. The size of an individual island has a huge influence on the fate of those cast away there. Yet some of these islands are host to entirely unique organisms found nowhere else in the world, such as the cryst laden microcosms of the Torray Isles, the birthplace of the Stitcher race. Some islands are even found aloft in the skies of Essari supported by the enigmatic AA-Nodes residing within the raised bedrock. Many of these islands have yet to even be visited by the sapients of Essari.Today we will visit the last terrestrial ecosystems found throughout Essari. After visiting these amazingly unique island ecosystems across the planet, we will leave the surface world and visit the marine ecosystems of Essari, the birthplace of life.Come with us on one final journey. This is Planet Essari.--Evolutionary Restrictions in Ecosystem--• Extant organisms of these ecosystems are exclusively found within these unique island habitats, or are migratory aerial organisms.• This will be the only terrestrial ecosystem in this thread, as all other focuses will be marine ecosystems. All terrestrial organisms MUST live in these islands ecosystems. Attached is another image of recently created modern organisms in the Essari EvoGames. The last post in my spam barrage will be an example of the limits for evolutions in this EvoGame
The River Deral, now referred to as the Killideral has diversified into the many niches of its freshwater habitat. The Raspjaw Deral has evolved into a tenacious predator of the Essari rivers and lakes. They thrive in the currents of lakes and high-energy rivers, feeding on Killideral and other small aquatic organisms. They use their lamprey-like mouths to tear and rasp flesh off of prey, often using their tusks to impale its prey, preventing its escape. These tusks as well as their bright coloration is also essential form establishing hierarchy and mating rights between Male Raspjaws. The River Grazer Deral is an entirely plant- eating Deral. Its rotund body keeps them closer to bottom of riverbeds and lakes where they graze of aquatic plants. Their larger scooper-like mouths are adapted for ripping tougher plant fibers and even roots, allowing them to easily consume and entire plant. They are typically seen in large shoals, especially during mating season. The Snagclaw Ankideral is a variety of Deral that taken to mostly skittering around on the bottom of river beds and near the river edge. They predominantly feed on whatever they come across, dead or alive. They are opportunist hunters, often hiding ubder rocks or sunken braffitree logs waiting for prey to wander too close. Their powerful claws are serrated inward, allowing it to entrap small prey easily, while its mouth located inside the claws begin feasting on the struggling prey. The Trawljaw Deraddle is an enormous variant of the Deral often only seen in either lakes or slow moving rivers. Its mouth arms have become shorter, while its mandibles have splayed out into a filamentous seine. They typically swim near the water surface on sunny days feeding on zooplankton, loose algae, and other floating plants they favor. Its armored body is made of cartilage similar to a shark, which when Deraddles reach their adult size, this armor prevents predation from a majority of aquatic predators. All of these organisms are endemic throughout the world just like the Killderal. And with that I am finally finished with my opening barrage of OP info drops. Have fun evolving organisms folks.[These organism example were already posted in the previous thread, however they may of course be built off however a creator may please.]
In the far south of the world, in the icy waters off the coast of Denui Island, the pressure of the chill produces a new species of Algeatree. This new species, the Rollotree, has a new tactic to save warmth -- at night, it rolls up its leaves, decreasing their surface area and thereby reducing heat loss.
In a similar turn of evolution, other algeatrees on Denui Island also adapt to reduce their heat loss. The Perennialgea sheds its leaves every autumn in preparation for the dark months ahead in which they will be limited or useless. After spending the winter in a state of dormancy, fueled by energy reserves stored in its (slightly larger) base, it regrows its foliage in spring.
Around Denui Island, some deep-sea kelgea move into shallower coastal water, exploiting a new niche. With less pressure to grow upwards and reach the sunlight, they become squatter, shrinking by over half their average height but also growing more bulky.
>>2896415the kelgibulb is a domesticated variant of the progenitor species. Growing in shallow coastal water it is a veritable cornucopia of psychoactive and stimulant chemicals."Sailors screaming salad" the earlier Kelgi defended itself against predation with mild hallucinogenic compounds and a dangerous stimulant based toxin. Desperate sailors discovered one could safely eat the plant after boiling it no less than 3 times. The medicinal effects against fatigue and boredom were quickly appreciatedIn addition to a food and medical source, the Kelgibulb also can be used as a dye, however the dye itself can leach into the skin of a wearer and cause unanticipated effects such as, but not limited to: hallucinations of emra, unexpected bouts of energy, praise of emra, a strong desire for genocide or revolt.
Whilst the rollotree uses control of its leaves to minimise surface area, the blobby algeatree simply alters its body shape. Become more thickly-set, much like a small cactus, it saves more heat than its predecessor.
>>2896140the invasive allerfrog is endemic to nearly every port on the planet. An explosive proliferation in a short time was enabled by its tendency to stowaway on ships, or even cling to their sides. Later generations natural tolerance of oceanic water allowed them to drift in shipping channels and latch onto passing vessels by chance.Of note most invasive allerfrogs sport numerous false eyes.
A successor to the Denuian puffblades, the pygmypuff is a smaller, more hunkered-down plant better suited to toughing through the cold and windy conditions, especially in exposed areas.
>>2900224Ah, forgot to mention: Due to the flower being sheltered from the wind by the leaves, it is obscured from pollenators; in order to maintain visibility, the pygmypuff evolves a similarly-coloured hue on its leaftips.
>>2900224Puffblasters are an odd species of near unknown providence. Measuing in at 16-25cm they reproduce via a syrrupy explosion of seeds. The fruit is entirely barren and is used to lure organisms in for a tasty snack. Once either the fruit or the hairs of the plant are sufficiently disturbed, the plant will either disgorge its volume of sticky seeds from a boil or directly from a ruptured fruit stem. While mostly harmless, the seeds and goo are sticky and irritating, as well as smelling overly sweet which will attract other organisms. The fleeing creature will likely spread the puffblasters seeds far and wide, for several weeks.
A uniquely low-temperature take on the ancient algeagrass, the fluffgrass of Denui Island evolves an innovative solution to the drastic seasonal changes in this part of the world. The fluffgrass grows in the pitch-dark winter, shielded from the cold by a thick coat of white-grey hair. In the spring they shed this hair, exposing the green photosynthetic surfaces and allowing them to harness energy from the sun.
Meanwhile, on Denui Island...Some innabralo tuber, a domesticated food crop, begin growing in uncultivated areas of the island. They become larger and develop branches, using their tuber to store energy which sustains them through the winter.
Newsflash from Denui Island!A new species of pailbloom emerges, exploiting a fresh niche in pollinator attraction: in its nectar, it exudes a bioluminescent additive that causes the fluid to shine in the darkness. Nectar production is also increased, causing it flow onto the petals, increasing its visibility to pollinators. This new species, the lumibloom, can lure in sight-based animals to its flower even in darkness or low light conditions.
>>2900276another species of puff is the Thumping puff. It is prized above all for its aromatic and tender puffs. Pollen gathered from the thumping puff is a fantastic ingredient in any baking, imparting wonderful flavor and a certain vitality to any food. Being a predatory plant there is some degree of danger, but with modern labor laws most civilized nations no longer send out underage workers to accomplish a task better suited for an adult. The plant prefers nutrient poor soils with significant moisture, and seems to be unperturbed by salt content. The thumping puff will quickly overtake an area if enough fertilizer is provided, and is an energetic, quickly growing plant with a surprisingly fast reaction time. In the wild it will attract prey at night with its aromas and glowing thumper. Any major disturbance to its puff stalks evokes a sudden response.
Moving further north now, in the sea around Reido'ya some algeatrees evolve slightly spikier bases to protect them from herbivores. Nothing too original goin' on here, what you see is what you get.
Again on Reido'ya -- though this time on land -- natural selection produces a new species. The lanky bristlegrass continually grows new stem throughout its life, occasionally branching. The purpose? The more stem that a bristlegrass plant has, the more of the golden spore clusters it can produce; and the more spore clusters it has, the greater chance of an animal picking up the spores and dispersing them.
Grabraf migrating from Sujardin west to Reido'ya bring with them seeds of the palmbloom, endemic to their homeland. They cultivate the plant for its wood, which they use for construction and fuel. To better suit the palmbloom to this purpose, they breed it to be larger and to grow multiple trunks which split from the base. Typically, one of these "tripletrunk palmblooms" will have between two and four trunks.
>>2901541Just learnt that Reido'ya is in fact a _floating_ archipelago. So the thornbase will have to be present in its lakes and rivers.
--Habitat Focus: Shallow Seas--Our planet's continents are fringed by shallow seas. Rarely more than 250m deep, they lie on the continental shelves which may stretch sometimes for hundreds of miles, before the sea floor drops into deeper, darker waters. Altogether, they constitute a mere 6% of the world's oceans, but they contain a vast majority of it known marine life. These crystal-clear waters are often devoid of the algea and planktonic microorganisms that are the mainstay of vaster open oceans; but the year-round sunlight that nearly all these shallow waters receives allows for a plethora of larger plant-life and in turn animals to thrive here.In today's habitat focus, we will look at ecosystems of the Essarian shallow seas on a whole. These lush waters along the coastlines of the world are an invaluable meeting point for nearly all known marine life on the planet. We'll see how these ecosystems diversify along each coastline, and how their abundant life impacts the sapients and other organisms that live on the continents surrounded by these crystal blue waters.--Evolutionary Restrictions in Ecosystem--• Extant organisms may be either migrant/nomadic organisms from the open oceans, migratory/nomadic organisms from the inland coastlines and river systems, or are organisms that spend a majority of or all their lives in the shallow seas of Essari.• Terrestrial organisms may evolve in this habitat focus, but MUST spent the majority of their lives in the water.• Plant Size Cap at 22.• Animal Size Cap at 23.• We will be switching to the next habitat focus in 48 hours• Please use the Dossier pdf in the OP to find out which organisms are traditionally found in the Shallow Seas ecosystem and use the Imgur Gallery link POSTED HERE to get you high res images of each organism. >>2901624These Sujardine settlers also take with them the pailbloosh. Having less area in which to farm and forage, they put more effort into breeding the pailboosh to make it a more reliable crop. In this case, that means producing a new species which will put out a stem on top of which the fruit will grow. The grabraf coax this stem up a wooden cane, with the ultimate aim of making the fruit more difficult for "pest" animals to reach and consume.
I always love a good evo quest. This one seems pretty complex so ill lurk for a while till i understand it fully. :^)

--Habitat Focus: Coral Reefs--In the balmy, tropical seas that surround the great continent of Panoram, exists one of the most iconic ecosystems seen in the marine ecosystems of a multitude of worlds: Coral Reefs. To the north in the tropical gulf of the Panoramic Sea lies the immense Freda Reef, and to the south where the nutrients waters of the Sea of Skelp and the Essar Ocean exists the Autum Reef. Despite these two combined ecosystems making up little more than 0.1% of the marine ecosystems on Essari, these living cities around the seas of Essari are some of oldest and most diverse ecosystems of the world. These crimson reefs, with hues of reds, oranges and fuchsia are evident even from space.Today's focus in the EvoGame will be on the Coral Reefs of Essari. This ecosystem is entirely exclusive to the shallow seas around Panoram, and additionally share the same ecosystem zone with the shallow seas. Here in these geologically separated reefs, you can expect organisms here to go down two very distinct paths. Life in the coral reefs typically are reliant on close communal relationships with other organisms in the reefs, and often rely on bright coloration as a form of communication between individuals of the same species and/or display a message or warning to other organisms.--Evolutionary Restrictions in Ecosystem--• Extant organisms may be either migrant/nomadic organisms from the open oceans, migratory/nomadic organisms from the inland coastlines and river systems, or are organisms that spend a majority of or all their lives in the shallow seas of Essari.• Terrestrial organisms may evolve in this habitat focus, but MUST spent the majority of their lives in the water.• Plant Size Cap at 14.• Animal Size Cap at 18.• We will be switching to the next habitat focus in 48 hours• Please use the Dossier pdf in the OP to find out which organisms are traditionally found in the Coral Reef ecosystem and use the Imgur Gallery link POSTED HERE to get you high res images of each organism. The following are the most widespread Flufflord subspecies that are found in Essari. The Coastal Flufflads are found in Panoram's northern islands, compared to most landlord species they are minuscule in size, they are omnivores and are mostly feed "waste" excess crops produced, since their bodies are naturally accostumed to eat detritious. Vital to cold tripod island industry, and eventually introduced to Shatturne, these animals are kept for their meat and "eggs" (How do tripods breed?), but Flufflad hair crafts traditional to Fortification Day Island culture are popular too, F.D island is presumed to be this species birthplace. They have developed mandibles similar to the modern sapient Tripod species, a prime example of analogous organ development, making them a crucial species for the formulation of the theory of evolution in Panoramian academia.Originating from the Western Horde's homelands, the Wooly Flufflady seems to have appeared around the same time the tribal cultures of the western grassland-steppes did. These animals have been further bred for their wool, juice and in a lesser degree, meat. Their exoskeleton has turned into a series of plate-like armor that is used in the elaboration of traditional musical instruments. The Voracious Flufflord was first kept by the Clans of the Plains, used as a beast of burden, a source of landlord juice, and in some cases meat. The wool of these animals has turned into prickly hairs that protect it from predators, but also preventing it from being ridden by sapients. Although brutish at times, when properly kept this species is quite docile, although it tends to mistrust non-tripod sapients.
--Habitat Focus: Skreesh Forests--Throughout the shallow seas of Essari, fed by rich currents, are bountiful forests of Skreesh. These green seas are some of the most productive, but fiercely competitive waters in all the oceans. Great underwater forests flourish in seasonal waters around the globe, particularly around the coastlines of Moralve. The thickets the Skreesh colonies create are crowded with life. The competition for everything in this ecosystem are intense, from food, to shelter. Some organisms live within these marine environments during their juvenile lives, treating the Skreesh Forests like a nursery; while other organisms have evolved to thrive in green seas. For today's focus, we will be visiting the vast underwater forests comprised of the massive Skreesh colonies. While many of these individual colonies are often the same species, their distances from one another lend to opportunity for much diversity between the Skreesh organisms. Additionally, life here is given a bounty of nutrients and resources to utilize, but also presents the dangers of competition between the organisms that have come to depend on the Skreesh Forests of Essari.--Evolutionary Restrictions in Ecosystem--• Extant organisms of this ecosystem may either be species that live here during their juvenile years that are typically endemic to other ecosystems, or live the entirety of their lives in the nursery-like thickets of the Skreesh Forests.• Plant Size Cap at 28.• Animal Size Cap at 25.• We will be switching to the next habitat focus in 48 hours• Please use the Dossier pdf in the OP to find out which organisms are traditionally found in the Skreesh Forests ecosystem and use the Imgur Gallery link POSTED HERE to get you high res images of each organism. >>2914093Fan Skreeshsize:20 maxFan Skreesh continously grows throughout its life, start off as nothing more than a microscopic spore. They filter seawater for minerals and microscopic organisms, and are in fact a primarily filter feeding species that augments with photosynthesis. The giant fan skreesh is the reason for many of Essari's crystal clear and beautiful blue water beaches. Cock tripod explorers have noted that the fan skreesh even seem to communicate within their forests via chemical signals, triggering "sleep" and "mating" cycles.Shreesh Bzol40-60cmHerbivoreA meaty Bzol species that exclusively feeds off of the Fan Skreesh. Popular with stitcher divers as it has "A crunch that does not stop."
The Skreesh Tumbleweed Colonies tend to take the shape of spheric 2-6 meter blobs made out of interwoven rough and thick skreeshstalks with no leaves, they don't have any fruits either, reproducing by spores. They float at different altitudes depending on their size, and be it deep sea trenches or freezing polar waters, they can be found in all over the oceans of essari, The Tiaratop Skreesh Colonies tend to be incredibly large, with tales of some of them being over a 1,5 kilometers long. They strech from the bottom of the ocean, forming large "crowns" of stalks alongside their bodies that serve as housing for many different species of marine creatures. They reproduce via fruit-like seedpods that first look like bean pods that burst open when they are mature.
--Habitat Focus: The Open Oceans--The world's greatest wilderness, the open ocean. It covers over two thirds of the planet's surface unseparated by continental landmasses for thousands of miles. Here, there is nowhere to hide and little to eat over its vast range, making its the marine equivalent of a desert on Essari. Yet these deep blue waters are home to the greatest hunters and nomadic organisms of the planet. Organisms patrol these marine deserts in search of bounties of zooplankton, algea blooms, and any shoals of small organisms that act as the basis of the open ocean food web. These open waters are the truest testing for all marine life, and life on Essari has developed many strategies for surviving out in the big blue. For todays habitat focus, we will be observing the organisms found out in the oceans of Essari, a truly global habitat and ecosystem. Life here depend on both the chance discovery of found bounties, and how well these organisms are optimized at enduring the hundreds, perhaps thousands of miles they need to travel to find food. While some life is fortunate enough to perhaps discover and live around the invariably hazardous oases of the marine AA-Nodes, other life relies entirely on its ability to seek out food, and avoid being eaten themselves. --Evolutionary Restrictions in Ecosystem--• The extant organisms of this ecosystem may be from any of Essari's oceans, bust must spend the majority or entirety of their lives out in the seemingly endless open oceans• Plant Size Cap at 16.• Animal Size Cap at 29.• We will be switching to the next habitat focus in 48 hours• Please use the Dossier pdf in the OP to find out which organisms are traditionally found in the Open Oceans ecosystem and use the Imgur Gallery link POSTED HERE to get you high res images of each organism. >>2920820Atoll AlgaeA population of Shaggy Fluffclump Cloud Algea begins to drift lower and lower, their spongy mats now dragging through the water and utilizing the waste of various aquatic organisms for nutrients. This has the side effect of weighing down the plants even further, dragging them down until they're floating on the surface of the ocean like miniature islands. Their adhesive mats quickly build up large amounts of debris and serve as a shelter for many animal species, feeding the algea with their waste, any food scraps left behind, and their bodies upon death. A small 'sail' also develops at the top of the dome, capable of changing positions ever-so-slightly to slowly change the plant's course.Figured that I should make something to get people going.
