XCOM Barracks, XCOM HQ, North AmericaThat was probably the best damn shower you’ve had in a very long time. Maybe it’s the fatigue setting in and the numerous events happening in a very short span of time. Or it’s probably because you’ve been awake for nearly 30 hours so. Likely all of the above plus you're not wearing your freaking armor anymore.Being an XCOM squad leader is busy work you guess. You dry yourself off and wear your fatigues, which is only slightly uncomfortable given how oddly form fitting the clothes are for the troops. Everyone eyes each other up without even realizing, you think. It’s a bit distracting. Quirks of XCOM aside, you have things to do and that’s getting the rest of your squad up to speed with your psionic abilities. The last operation had gotten the purple glowing cat out of the bag for half of the squad so it’s only fair the other half are in the know. You’re going to have the squad meeting in Medical, given that both Sweet and Peppermint are still recovering from the observatory mission. Naru had overheard that the pair are conscious now, which is a good opportunity to get things sorted out. You let out a long yawn and rub your eyes as you exit the barracks, making your way towards Medical. The place is as busy as ever with a constant stream of troops and the occasional exhausted scientist checking in or out of Medical. You inquire about your squad and are given the locations of both Sweet and Peppermint while also requesting a room where you can wheel both of your troops to to have an important squad discussion. You don’t want orderlies on your ass if you had to roll them away to somewhere private. All of the requests are gone through, fortunately. Both your Medic and Sniper are in different wards, usually troops are bunched together by squad but with the recent increase in alien activity everyone gets shuffled around a bit. You’re going to need to get both of them up to speed. Who do you visit first?>Peppermint.>Sweet.>Other.

>>2780730>>Sweet.Has he had his family visitation yet?
>>2780769Not yet, he only woke up recently.
>>2780775Ooo, so do we get to break the news to him?
>>2780783Sweet, thanks Pixel!
>>2780737>>2780753>>2780762>>2780765>>2780769>>2780819Sweet it is, writing! Just a heads up since I forgot to add it in the metapost but this'll be a shorter run tonight. I'll probably have 4-5 hours max tonight, so lets make it count!
You’ll check on Sweet first, you decide. He’s the one that had the most severe injury out of the pair and you also are planning on breaking some good news to the guy when you can. You make your way over to meet him, noting the doorway to his patient’s room is open. Sweet’s inside, the fancy high-tech bed raised up to allow him to be sitting up. You note numerous bandages and the like wrapped around his chest, which you can’t help but feel a pang of guilt the moment you see it. On the little fold out tray is a meal platter. Your squad’s Medic is currently eating a cup of jelly. Or more specifically he’s about to eat it. He’s mostly leering at it with his spoon hovering right over the green colored dessert with not even a little bit scooped out.“Hey, Sweet.” You say, knocking on the door to announce yourself as you step in. “You’re giving that jelly one hell of a stink eye.”“Hey, Dozer.” Sweet greets, setting his spoon down and rubbing the back of his head slightly embarrassed. “I, ah, don’t like this flavor. But I have to eat it to get my blood sugar level back up. Pretty annoying.” “I could get a nurse to--”“Nah! Don’t even sweat it.” Sweet shakes his head, amused. “I’m doing everyone a favor in this base to eat the green jelly so nobody else can have the misfortune of eating it. But that won’t stop me from taking my goddamn sweet ass time while eating it. So! What can I do for you, Dozer? Heard you and the others got back from an op, you stopping by to say hi?”>Ask how Sweet has been recovering.>Catch him up on some things. Not the major stuff yet.>Thank him for saving your ass back in the Observatory.>Cut straight to the point with the good news for him.>Other
>>2780914>>Ask how Sweet has been recovering.>>Catch him up on some things. Not the major stuff yet. These two can fit together, catching up can lead into asking how he's doing. So voting for this.
>>2780914It's kind of insensitive to serve green jelly to troopers who got shot with plasma.>Thank him for saving your ass back in the Observatory. Then:>Catch him up on some things. Not the major stuff yet.
>>2780914>>Ask how Sweet has been recovering.
>>2780914>>Cut straight to the point with the good news for him.No need to wait
>>2780914>>Thank him for saving your ass back in the Observatory.>Ask how Sweet has been recovering
>>2780914>Thank him for saving your ass back in the Observatory.>Catch him up on some things. Not the major stuff yet.
A bit of nearly everything then, writing!
“I’m stopping by for a couple of things.” You say. “First, how have you been recovering?”“Well if you’re wondering how good that sniper got me, it was pretty good.” Sweet says. “But XCOM’s medicine continues to remain the best of the best, and I’m glad to I’m not only able to patch other people up with it but I can be patched up by it too. I’ll be fine as long as I try not to laugh too hard. So don’t make me laugh.”“I’ll be a complete buzzkill for you.” You reassure.“Hah! That’s more like-- ow.” Sweet winces. “Oops. My bad.”“We’ll work on it.” “Say, how in the loop are you anyways? Did you overhear the big thing reveal that happened earlier?” You ask him, walking over to take a seat beside him. “Just the important stuff, like how nobody died while I was under during that clusterfuck of a mission. Thank god.” Sweet says, relieved. “Well…” You then give him the cliffnotes of things since he’s been unconscious and treated, sidestepping the real big stuff involving psionics or the favor you got from the Commander to him. He listens intently, eager to be caught up with the goings on. He’s impressed by how you had managed to claw together the mission in the Observatory, though he’s not sure if he’d approve teaching IEDs to a bunch of civilians. He expresses concern on the Convoy Mission before finally ending on the reveal of the Gene Mod troopers and Naru’s transformation.“Sounds like I missed a fair bit.” Sweet muses.“You don’t know the half of it.” You admit. He really doesn’t yet, but soon. “Well, I’m still glad to hear nobody got too seriously injured.” Sweet relaxes.“Same here.” You agree. “In fact, if it wasn’t for what you did saving my ass I don’t know if I’d be able look myself in the mirror if people had died if I was unconscious. So thanks for saving my ass back there, seriously Sweet.”“You were giving that Bannon asshole an earful, you had pretty good excuse being distracted.” Sweet smirks. “It was basically part of my job description anyways. As annoying as it is to keep having to save your stubborn self.” “Hey, I’m trying to work on it! I’ve barely rushed headfirst into plasma since.” You protest.“Uh huh.” Sweet looks at you skeptically. “I’ll believe it when I see it. We didn’t name you Dozer for nothing, y’know. And you really don’t have to thank me, if you’re still breathing at the end of a mission that’s all I care about it.”Fair enough. You and Sweet continue have small chat before the conversation lulls and Sweet decides it’s time to tackle the horrid green jelly. As pokes and prods away at the cup with his spoon you decide it’s time to break the news, the question is how do you break the news?>Just say it.>Ease into it.>Other
>>2781082>Just say it.
>>2781082>Ease into it.
>>2781082>>Just say it.
>>2781083>>2781084>>2781087>>2781088>>2781092Just saying it is, writing!
“Sweet…” You start, but he doesn’t hear you right away. “Medical is going to be setting the wrong example if they keep serving this flavor.” Sweet says idly, taking a small scoop with his spoon and holding the morsel up close to his face. “Hey, I got something I want to tell you.”“Like red is easily a much more appealing flavor than green. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone prefer green over red. I get it probably comes in bulk and Logistics can’t exactly cherry pick what supplies we get but stil it’s-.”“I got you a call with your family.” You just say, outright.Sweet freezes.“During the Observatory mission you were… saying their names under your breath. And you obviously take great joy in talking about them. So I spoke with the Commander on the subject and she gave the OK for it.” You continue.Sweet carefully sets the spoon down onto the folding tray, pushing it aside.“I couldn’t get a chance for them to actually visit, with opsec and all, so I tried to get the best chance I could. I made sure it’s a private call too, so nobody will need to listen in. At least that way it will--”You never get to finish your sentence as the wind is taken out from you as Sweet embraces you. You’re pulled in as the man holds you tightly in his bearlike grip. When Sweet speaks, you hear a side of him you’d have never expect from the jovial man.“Thank you. Thank you thank you.” Sweet says, choking up. Sincere and honest gratitude in his words. “You have no idea how much I’ve… been wanting to…”“This is for all the times you’ve saved all of our lives in Strike-1.” You say patting him on the back. “I know you just said you don’t care much about thank yous, but well… this a thanks Sweet.”Pent up emotion and homesickness from possibly months of combat stress comes out at full force at that as it’s very clear this means a lot to Sweet. More than anything else in the world. A part of you can’t help but feel a bit jealous for how much love he has for his family. Mostly, you’re happy he’s happy. It’s a reminder of what you’re fighting for. “I’m in your debt, brother.” Sweet says after finally letting go of you, You try not to make it too obvious your catching you breath from his tight grip. “Brother?” You say, clearing your throat.“You got me a chance to speak with my family. If that doesn’t make you family I don’t know what is.” He beams. “When we beat the aliens off our planet, you’re more than welcome to bring your family over to sample Mary’s hospitality. You haven’t lived a proper life until you’ve tried her jambalaya!”“I’m honored.” You grin. Sweet laughs at that, heartily. He winces a bit, but his own joy overrides the pain he’s probably feeling. (Part 1 / 2)
“You know, I always did feel like I did get a bit overboard talking about my wife and kid. I can’t help myself sometimes if I start to get going about them.” Sweet is fired up in general, and if it wasn’t for the fact he’s more than willing to wait however long it takes before he’s fit to walk he’d probably make a beeline to Mission Control. “If anyone has any issue with your family, me and I’m sure the rest of Strike-1 will straighten them out.” You reassure.“Hah! ...Actually, do you mind if I ask you something?” “Shoot.”“Do you have a family?” “Well, I got my folks but--”“No no, I mean, a wife and kids of your own.” Sweet reiterates. “Besides you being a former Fed SWAT with Rachel I don’t think you’ve really said much about yourself.”Huh, you’re right. It’s not that you didn’t want to say anything it just… never sprung up.“No. I’m not in any relationship.” You shake your head.“Really? Damn. I pegged you for the type.” Sweet, scratches his chin. “Look, I’m not trying to pry here or anything but do you have your eye out on anyone here?”“Uh.” You are completely caught off guard by this.“C’mon, brother. A man has emotional needs too, after all. You don’t even have to say who, just a yes or no.” Sweet says, insisting. A sly look in his eyes. “I swear it’s not gonna leave this room. It's not like I'm gonna compete with you, I already won!”Sweet chuckles and points to his ring.…>Yes. There is someone in the base that you’re interested in.>No. You’re not looking for that.(Please note this is not a route lock choice or anything like that, this is just a yes or no to determine if you guys want to aim for a relationship and that’s it! >>2781357Well if we do that, we could always go back to The Bureau if we wanna stay within the game's canon. Hell, for all the stuff there was last thread about a mid to post WW2 XCOM-esque game The Bureau fills in handsomely in quite a few of those spots as a reference point. The game covered a late 50's/early 60's USA-based XCOM organization that had a lot of early combat data fighting ayys and managed to fill in quite a few blanks between EU/EW and XCOM 2. The canon reason why none of the cool shit that was picked up during the Bureau's plot in the EU/EW timeline was that it was all sealed up in plain boxes Raiders of the Lost Ark style.
>>2781517Okay anon, this IS war.
Is too late for a waifu grabbing? I wanna a piece of Burnout’s boi pucci
>>2781660Filling Burnout with our love (literally) is still better than choosing Rachel
>>2781689>He doesn't like second best girlWhat a fag
The thought occurs for a moment to dodge the question entirely, or just outright lie. But you can’t do that when Sweet had embraced you not even five minutes ago. That’s messed up and you don’t want to ruin and growing trust between you or any of the squad. Sweet's a good guy....Fuck.“Yeah. I’m interested in someone in the base.” You admit, continually adjusting the cap in your head, trying to find that perfectly snug position. You don’t.“Hey, that’s great.” Sweet answers. “Everyone deserves a bondmate.”“Bondmate?” You tilt your head at the rather odd word.“Think of it as the ultimate partner who would have your back in a firefight or well in anything. When you’re completely and utterly in-sync with the person you’re bonded with.” Sweet says, crossing his arms and nodding. “Doesn’t necessarily have to be a romantic partner, but it usually is. One person can only ever have just the one bondmate, and it’s a beautiful and moving sight.”“It’s still a firefight though, anything can happen. What if something were to happen? It’s war.” You frown.“There’s risks, yes.” Sweet concedes before grinning. “But, we all know the greatest bonds are the ones that are forged in the battlefield, it’s really the next step. Think about the tactical compatibility. You have my support in finding your bondmate in the base. There’s a bunch of tough as nails women who kill aliens for a living here after all!”“Thanks.” There’s a pause. “Where’d you even learn about that ‘bondmate’ stuff from?”“My wife. Mary read it from this little booklet written by a Jake something or other. She picked it up in a bargain bin at our local bookstore back in Kansas, hah!” Sweet laughs, before wincing, cursing, and rubbing his chest. “Dammit, I really need to stop laughing.”Yep, definitely sounds like bargain bin stuff. Though… you do admit there’s some merit to it, as absurd as it sounds. “I’ll keep the mate bonding stuff in mind.”“Bondmate.” Sweet corrects. “Saying it that was sounds really trashy.”“Yeah, uh, that.” You shrug, before looking at the time on the wall. “I’d stay and chat longer, but I we’re going to have a squad meeting in a bit about something pretty important in Med Ward 3 and I need to let Peppermint know too. Are you going to be alright in moving there for a little while?”“I’ll be there. I’ll try and work on this jelly before then. Out with you! I have an important battle with this treacherous jiggling desert I need to face!” Sweet shoos you out giving you a heart pat on the shoulder before pushing you to doorway. Despite being in in medical, Sweet’s still the large muscled man he always has been. You say your goodbye and step back out into the hallway, changing course to visit Peppermint. Sweet’s words of encouragement linger in the back of your head the entire walk over, rattling around in your brain. Another thing to work on in the growing list of tasks on your plate. At least getting a ‘bondmate’ has a couple of advantages…(Part 1 / 2)
As you approach Peppermint’s patient room you start to hear the very distinct sounds of an argument between the ever feisty Russian Sniper and an unfortunate doctor caught in her crosshairs. A few of the medical staff are crowded around nearby, trying to listen in and judging by the cut straws held in each of their hands, the poor bastard getting flak from Peppermint got the literal short end of the straw.“Ma’am. I know you are frustrated given the situation but our hands are tied behind our back with--” The doctor’s frantic explanations are cut off by your Sniper.“Lies! I know for a fact that you can give me my request. I heard one the other doctors say it’s possible and will not hurt me! You are just being exceptionally difficult! You… you--!!” It’s around that point Peppermint devolves into a variety of very colorful Russian insults. ...Well it’s good to know Pepper’s still got that pepper in her. It seems you might have a slightly delicate situation similar to Naru’s disagreement with other medical staff last time. This seems to be a common theme with your squad, you included. You should figure out how to resolve this situation before Strike-1 is placed entirely on Medical’s shit list barring Sweet and… Burnout to that one nurse.>Get in and figure out the situation directly>Keep listening in like the other staff to get a better idea.>Ask about what’s going on.>Other

>>2782009No one would give a shit if a good character like Guts or Joseph Joestar had a harem. It's just because the characters that usually do have harems are intolerable dipshits.
>>2787299It has nothing to do with how good the character is. Guts having a harem would've been irritating considering his character and his place in the setting. The only time a harem is justifiable is if the nigga is an emperor, king, or someone with that kind of power that has a bunch of concubines. In any other circumstance it's a lowest common denominator power fantasy that makes all the girls involved cucks with extremely low self esteem and hardly any agency. Any respect you might have had for them dies.

You don’t really linger long enough to assess the situation as you just step into the right, right in the middle of a very irate looking Peppermint and nervous doctor. The pair stop to look at you as you enter. Peppermint looks different from the last time you’ve seen her. Running up from the side of her neck to her chin are plasma burn scars. The Thin Man sniper had tagged her on her shoulder during the observation mission. Stray bits of the glowing green substance splashed onto her neck. That’s not the only thing different about her, as she’s changed her hairstyle. Her platinum blond hair is now done in a folded ponytail instead of just down. “Ah good. There you are, American.” Peppermint says, a slight look of relief shown in her usual scowl. “Assist me in talking sense to this imbecile.”“What’s going on here?” You ask, looking between the two. You don’t want to jump to either side yet until you get a good idea what’s going on. In most situations you would default to backing up your squad but this could be an exception.“You’re, um, her squad leader yes?” The doctor coughs, composing himself. You nod.“Well, then maybe you can talk sense to your squad member as she has been repeatedly asking for…” He tries to find the right word. “ ...detrimental requests.”Peppermint growls in frustration at that. Ready to start throwing more words around. Instead, she pinches the bridge of her nose, trying to take steady breaths to keep herself calm. She reaches for a grip strengthener and begins to use it rather… aggressively, glaring at the doctor. The doctor tugs at his tie nervously. “...What are the requests?” You press. You hope Peppermint is not implying anything.“S-she’s been repeatedly requesting for an early leave from medical. Which as you can imagine is ab--”“Absolutely possible but you are denying this from me.” Peppermint grunts. “If you are so worried, give me some painkillers or the like, I have already recovered enough and I am not going to overexert myself like an idiot. This is wasting everyone’s time.”Now things are starting to make sense.“How long is she supposed to be staying in Medical for?” You say.“At least two wee--” The doctor falters under Peppermint’s steely gaze. “--one to two weeks.”“I can prove I am able to leave, but they won’t even let me do that. Talk sense to them.” Peppermint crosses her arms, looking to you expectantly.“You’re risking yourself getting injured further!” The doctor says helplessly, turning to you. “You are her squad leader, explain to her were trying to help her.”Uh…>Help Peppermint out.>The Doc’s right.>Isn't there some sort of compromise?>Other
>>2789257>Isn't there some sort of compromise?"Peppermint I can't allow you to go on missions until you are completely healed, but you are obviously well enough to move around if you can argue with this much vigor. How about she is free to move around and do some firing range time, but she has come into Medical every day for an hour or so for you all to keep an eye on her and her injuries?

I might try to write them myself if I'm free.I'll try and remember to make an archive for pastebins if more are made! Here's the write-up again if anyone's interestedhttps://pastebin.com/Y2XcJWJf
“Look, there's gotta be some sorta compromise here, right?” You say, looking between both your Sniper and the doc. The pair look at each other, and neither say a word. Either because it hasn’t been thought up or attempts to negotiate something didn’t last long, it seems it’ll fall on you to get a situation that’s fair to both parties. This’ll be delicate. You’re not really good at being delicate.“I am willing to cooperate if it means I can leave this room.” Peppermint grunts. The doc doesn’t say anything but he’s willing to listen if it means things can get resolved peacefully.“Peppermint, I can’t allow you to go on missions until you’re fully healed up.” You hold a hand out as she starts to glare at you and a hissing noise begins to escape your lips, “But, you’re obviously well enough to move around if you can argue with this much vigor.”She rolls her eyes at that, muttering under her breath. Though you think you catch a faint smirk on her lips.“How about this, I have a few ideas on how to go about this. One possibility is that Peppermint here will be free to move around and do things such as practice in the firing range, but she has to check into Medical every day to monitor her status.” You explain. “Another possibility is working more actively in the recovery process, working with the good doctor here. Perhaps passing some kind’ve minimal level physical test to have her check out early? Things like that. We can narrow things down into a nice sweet spot for everyone to be happy. How does that sound?”You flash the friendliest smile you can muster, hoping that could help smooth things over. There’s another moment of silence as both Peppermint and the doctor contemplate this. There’s a part of you that starts to hope this’ll go through easily. They liked the ideas you suggested for sure, which means you’re on the right track…And then the back and forth tug of war negotiations begin in earnest. Peppermint prefers the former idea of being able to move about freely, barring check ups. While the doc would much rather prefer the latter suggestion of a physical eval before letting Peppermint be relieved early. You’re going to need to strike a balance between both suggestions. At the very least you struck up individual ideas that they’re both on board with so that should make things slightly easier. You adjust your ball cap and take a breath. Time to flex your diplomatic muscles…>Roll 1d100+5(I will write the outcome when I wake up.)

>>2790608That's why it sucks to be restricted to game limits. We cant have Shen build burrowbots and have them look for enemies.
>>2790742After our brief psionic stint if you think we are still going by just game mechanics then i'm not sure what quest you have been reading. Also why build burrowbots exclusively to assist with one enemy type when we can just improve battle scanners that do that and more?
>>2790625But I don't want to shoot Harita's babies
>>2790751>Also why build burrowbots exclusively to assist with one enemy typeApparently some enemies like to hide in cellars, they come in handy for that too.
>>2790837At this rate, we'll have to research Subterranean Troopers armed with pile bunkers that pump targets full of compressed gases until they explode. Mole Men are not to be trifled with.
Things go a lot smoother than you had expected. You had expected a lot of pushback from both Peppermint and the doctor, but you manage to rather effectively iron out a plan that satisfies everyone.Peppermint will get time every day to move about and practice at the shooting range, freeing her from being cooped up in a room. It’s not going to be an all day affair, but it’s better than nothing. At the same time, there will be a reasonable physical evaluation open so that Peppermint can work for an early leave. Most importantly, she’ll not be going on any missions any time soon until she’s given a complete clean bill of health. With that sorted out in a reasonable fashion, the doctor finally takes his leave and you let out a sigh of relief. “There. That wasn’t so bad.” You say, relieved. You were fully expecting to have to work your ass off to get an agreement.“Yes.” Peppermint mumbles. Sighing and leaning back into her pillow. “You didn’t have to help, American.”“Huh? You asked for my help.” You tilt your head.“I knew that!” Peppermint snaps, annoyed at herself more than anything else. “Got it.” You smirk. Peppermint groans and looks away. There’s a silence that hangs in the air for a moment. Peppermint tosses and turns about in her bed for a moment before looking back at you. She’s seems settled to say something to you but when she attempts to speak all that comes out is mutterings in Russian. She lets out a noise of frustration before covering her face with one of the pillows.“Is something wrong?” You ask carefully, concern rising.“N-- perhaps!” Peppermint grunts, her voice muffled by the pillow.“Uh, do you… want to-” You’re cut off as Peppermint rips the pillow off of her face and looks at you with wide eyes.“You have my thanks for helping me! Twice!” Peppermint practically shouts, causing you to jump back in surprise.“Woah!” You’re caught off guard by the sudden ferocity of her appreciation.“...Grah!” Peppermint, flustered twice over proceeds to smother herself once again with the pillow, tighter this time. You can see a Peppermint shaped face indentation on the pillow. She begins to let out a long groan, muffled once again by the pillow. You raise a concerned hand up to try and remove the pillow from her face but hesitate. There’s a good chance of Russian retaliation. It still continues to be hard to believe that she really acts like this and it isn't just a show... >Keep your distance but thank her back.>Try and remove the pillow before she accidentally asphyxiates herself or something.>Attempt to try and carefully coax out why she acts like that.>Other.

Calling the vote here! I am currently writing an update on my phone with my portable keyboard while I wait for my Frankenstein of a heavily modded XCOM 2 to load missions. My X2 does not like it when I alt tab during loading screens.Go multitasking!
>>2791868What kind of mods do you use, Pixel? Tell me. Do you have one of those incredibly lewd bikini armor mods?
“Peppermint.” You start. The Sniper makes a muffled noise of frustrated anguish.“You’re welcome.” “...” Peppermint is silent at that. You suppress a friendly chuckle. The worst possible thing would be sending the wrong signal right now. You’ve been gaining the trust from several other members of the squad, you don’t want to break that string of successes with her.“I want to try and understand why you’re so… prickly with everyone.” You can’t help but wince at your choice of words, but you really couldn’t think of a better way of saying it. Subtle you are not.No reply.“I understand you operate the best as a Lone Wolf. I get that. And you’re a damn good at your job and-”“Mmph.” Peppermint says, words indecipherable with the pillow.“What?” You lean in to try and better listen.Peppermint suddenly removes the pillow over her face, nearly smacking you in the face with it. You have to jerk back, nearly falling over on the reaction. She’s about to say something before she tilts her head, confused at the strange pose your in. She shakes her head, muttering something in Russian, probably thinking you’re a weirdo. Could be worse.“...It’s foolish to think I am the best Sniper.” Peppermint says, correcting you and shaking her head. "I have much still to learn. Too much."“You’re in XCOM, by default that makes you one of the best of the best.” You shake your head. “I was not good enough to outsnipe that damn alien.” Peppermint mutters darkly, staring up at the ceiling. “All of my years of training, and I could barely keep up with that… that… cheater.”That isn’t what you asked for, but you can still work with the topic to learn about Peppermint. You hit something that’s getting her to talk. As long as she keeps talking, you’ll get somewhere. That’s something you learned from the interrogators back in the FBI. A lot better than say a bucket of water and cloth that the CIA would use. “Thin Men are bullshit.” You agree, trying to lighten the mood. Peppermint only grumbles.“Medic Sweet was gravely injured because I missed my shots against that alien and it had tagged me as well.” Peppermint says grimly, rubbing at the scars on her neck. “I cannot miss like that. People will die if I miss.” So she does care about the squad, contrary to how she normally is.>There’s no way anyone can be prepared for what the aliens will throw next.>She’s being too hard on herself.>You completely understand that mentality. >Other
>>2791871>>You completely understand that mentality.I fully agree. We can't afford to fail with lives of others on the line, especially now that we fight for the sake of humanity's survival. It's why we have to prepare and practice so much, and why Dozer gets so angry when his teammates gets hurt. Still, better to channel that frustration into motivation to do better the next time then to be depressed about it. We don't have time to waste on moping when the world is still depending on us.
>>2791871>You completely understand that mentality. >Just make sure she does not wind herself up too tight, we CAN'T have her break like Rook did.
>>2791870I've dabbled in a little bit of everything. I've installed so many mods I've had to repeatedly purge and rebuild my mod collection to make the thing playable. It hurts every time to reset from zero. And to answer your last question...____Yes.___

“Trust me, I completely understand.” You say.“Prove it.” Peppermint answers simply, looking at you expectantly. It’s not a challenge so much as a request to explain yourself. “Alright… You know how I can get pretty mad, right?”“Yes. It can be very distracting.” Peppermint grunts. She winces, closes her eyes, and grumbles to herself. “...Continue.”“While there’s a reason for it sure, but a lot of that frustration is because I share that very same mentality as you. God knows how many times I’ve thought about some of the bad calls or screw ups I’ve in my head.” You shake your head. “You could say we’re cut from the same cloth in that respect.”“Yes, I can see you are the type now.” Peppermint answers. “Those mistakes replay incessantly in the back of your mind, yes?”“It gets me seeing red, and it eats at me... But that just means we have to train harder and work like the well oiled machine I know Strike-1 can be so we don’t fail again. And that means improving on all fronts, and that includes mentally.” You consider how you’ll say the next bit before deciding to just be blunt. “You’re being way too hard on yourself, Pepper.”“Says the American who ‘sees red’.” Peppermint huffs, narrowing her eyes. Irritation growing.“Like I said, I’m going to be explaining that later. There’s a pretty big reason for that. But it’s true, you need to cut yourself some slack.” “I disagree. I need to be ‘hard’ on myself. Nobody else is going to push myself harder.” Peppermint shakes her head, getting more defensive. “If it means I have to make more concessions in other aspects of myself, so be it. It’s worth it to improve my sniping.”You frown. “It’s not just only about sniping--”“Yes it is!” Peppermint snaps, flaring in anger. Jabbing a finger at herself. “I have put my everything into sniping! I have spent years training my marksmanship, I have burned many bridges, I have sacrificed so much to get where I am. And you dare to say that I am being too difficult with myself!? It is what defines me! It is all I have!”Peppermint looks away at that, breathing heavily. Shuddering with a sheer hopeless anger with nowhere to direct it. Calling it here! This'll probably be the last post for this thread!
As in next update is the last update for this thread, just to be clear!
>>2795154I understood, but appreciate the clarification anyways. Looking forwards to what you show us man.
For those Cold War Era XCOM/SCOM fans:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGApiK0m4_o
“You are going to crack at this rate, Peppermint.” You say bluntly. “All it’s going to take is another missed shot and you might check out. And what good is being the best sniper then?”“...Tch.” Peppermint scowls, but she doesn’t start yelling back. Progress, but you don’t want to have her despise you if you can help it.You start to take a step forward but stop. She clearly wants you to keep some distance lest she lashes back at you. You do so, not wanting to invade her personal space. This is not a conversation she wants to have, but you press on anyways. If there’s something you’re learning with Peppermint is that you really have to make your point across even if she is being stubborn about it.“Look… I won’t say I know what you did to get here, but it’s never too late for you to grow.” You say. “You said you’ve burned bridges in the past? Consider XCOM and Strike-1 a fresh slate. You have a chance here to matter more to the squad than to just count on you for taking the shot, you just have to take it.”“...” Her lips twitch, but she still keeps quiet.“Just think on it, alright? It’s not going to happen overnight but neither did working to be the best sniper, right?”“...You and your words.” Peppermint mutters.“Hm?”“You can talk a lot if prompted.” Peppermint grunts. “But, perhaps, the words are not all a mere waste of breath… I will consider it.”“Thanks.” You smile. Peppermint rolls her eyes. You want to keep getting your Sniper to lower her guard, but it seems both that she’s more than at her limit with a conversation such as this… and looking at the time you have a squad meeting around the corner… which might be useful to Peppermint actually.“Some developments we’re revealed during the last operation, and we’re going to be having a full squad meeting soon.” You say, moving things along. “How soon?”“In about five minutes in one of the wards here in Medical. That was the initial reason I came to visit.”Peppermint curses.“This works out actually.” A small smile starts to creep up from your lips. “You can get started with your new training right away.”“I do not like where you are going with this.”“Tough luck. You’re going to start by having some small talk with the squad before I start with the meeting.” “I never said I would start immediately, only consider it” Peppermint glares.“When are you going to have a better chance to talk and have everyone together in one room?” You shrug. “I’m just saying that if you really wanted to get the most of it--”“Fine!” “Great. Think of it this way, at least you aren't huffing Thin Man Acid doing it.” “I’d prefer that instead.”Try as she might she is unable to deny that your suggestion is a good idea, much to her utter frustration. That’s Peppermint alright. With the talk over you and Peppermint leave to rendezvous with the rest of Strike-1, the sniper insisting she can walk herself. You compose yourself. This is it. Time to let the squad really know about your Gift.
