Finally after two years in the service of the Dark Queen Quintis you have finally been promoted, no more marching through filthy peasant villages administering the Queen's justice, this is your chance to rise through the ranks of her Majesty's armies and become one of her generals, or so you thoughtWhen we last left off, our mid boss was dealing with the effects of days of interrogation on the captured hero. You reach over and pull Selenas closer until she rests her head on your pauldron, You don't know how long you spend holding her with the sound of her tears plinking against your armor, but eventually her tears die down and you release her from your embrace."Despite what you may think of me Selenas, I am not a monster." She brings her bloodshot and puffy eyes even with yours as you continue "Who are these 'heroes' to you Selenas, don't tell me what they have told you they did, tell me what they have done, what you have seen with with your own eyes.At this Selenas pauses, she looks at the floor deep in thought, before looking up a somewhat confused look on her face. "Well, nothing, I mean when I first met them at Rugalia they seemed nice, they were marching through a freed settlement taking on anyone who would join. Falenta took an interest in me there and that is when she introduced me to the others.""Selenas, you haven't told me anything, what did they even tell you, you were fighting for?""Falenta said it was for our freedom, freedom from the heavy taxes and constant wars that drag their sons and fathers off to die in pointless wars" at these words Selenas starts to regain some confidence, she still truly believed Falenta was right."Selenas, I know you are smarter than this,""What," she responds, indignation growing in her voice."The taxes the peasants pay has far reaching effects, why do you think bandits had stopped attacking travelers, or why marsh warriors no longer raid towns in the south, these are the things that peasants money and lives pay for, the security and betterment of all the nation not just a one part of it."But Falenta said tha-""Don't tell me what Falenta said, you are not her Selenas, think for yourself!" you shout interrupting her. >>2583816Keep pushing."The Queen does not rule harshly out of sadism. She is harsh because it is the best way to ensure safety and stability for the realm. It is not as pretty as the idealism of Falenta, but people who suffer and die for an ideal are just as dead. Falenta may claim that she has a better way, and she may even believe that she is right. But the world cares not for belief, only facts, and the facts are not on her side."

After we come back from the village, would anyone be interested in testing the combat prowess of the goblins?
>>2583837This. A parting thought and then let her stew for a while
>>2583864I kind of have a thought on this. Gobbos are neither strong, brave or disciplined. Why are we using them as melee warriors? We should start training goblins as skirmishers and recruiting and drilling humans as halberdiers or pikemen. Imagine rebel forces getting peppered by arrows or javelins by swarms of goblins, who dart into squares of black armoured pikemen whenever someone tries to run them down. They could also fight from spiderholes and whatnot inside the maze

Soon you are sure the whole town was gathered in the market to listen. He came up behind me and knocked me over the head, I fell to the ground and he started to strangle me, I could smell the wine on his breath and see the rage in his eyes as he choked me, everything started to go black when suddenly my mother rushed over and tried to pull the lord off of me." Tears start to stream down Selenas's face as she speaks, "The lord a dagger from his belt and stabbed her over and over and over. That is when I picked up the practice sword and broke it over that nobles head. I cracked his skull open, he died right there next to my mother. His sons rushed to his side and I ran from the estate. I don't know for how long I ran, I just ran, I ran until I couldn't and I then just collapsed on the road. When I awoke the next day I wandered into Rugalia where I met Falenta and joined her cause." >>2598637>The Western Forests, to protect loggers from elf retaliationPlay up the bit that we were protecting common folk trying to earn a living through honest work from being slaughtered by the elves.Play up that we were no hero, but a man doing his duty for his Queen and his countrymen, protecting the innocent.
>>2598641This is a trap choice....remember, her father died to swamp folk, which means his death could be placed on us not being there in time, or failing in our duty.
>>2598648nah man, I think it`s the most reatable to her, we could even play up saying we wish we could`ve done a better job, and her father died some time ago, not really on us
>>2598658Still...I think the protection of the loggers is the best choice if we want to play the sympathetic route.
>>2598637>The western forests, to protect the loggers from elf retaliation.FUCKIN ELVES!
>>2598668yeah, but that is protection against retaliation, not agains some offensive war. the elves are killing loggers because the queen went there in the first place
>>2598710>>2598668We could just simply explain it as a job that needed doing and someone's gotta do it.
>>2598719I still think that the swamp people is better because it would give us a common enemy with her, but no problem, whatever wins the vote is cool by me
>>2598637>The western forests, to protect the loggers from elf retaliation.I'm angry! Angry about elves!
>>2598637>>The southern swamp lands, to push back the hordes of swamp folk.
>>2598637>>The western forests, to protect the loggers from elf retaliation.
>>2598637>The southern swamp lands, to push back the hordes of swamp folk.Fuck the swamp folk
>>2598710Protection against retaliation represents everything wrong with the "good guys" and everything right about the "dark empire"In any other fantasy, it would be portrayed as the noble elves defending the forest from the baddies who are using it to fuel their war machine. In reality we are defending innocent loggers who just want to feed their families, from arrogant, homicidal barbarians who value the life of a tree over 100 humans.
>>2598637Changing my vote to elf
>>2598637>>2598645>>2598674>>2598800>>2598807"We were sent to the forests on the western boarder, loggers and farmers were being attacked by elves and we were sent in to prevent that. Initially I was sent to with quartermaster to ensure that supply lines were set and safe, It was from him that I got a basic education, I served with him for about a month before our losses got so bad I had to be moved to the front. It was hell, the first logging camp we came to was full of corpses filled with arrows but those poor saps got off easy, the real unfortunate ones got sprouters planted in them.""What is a sprouter?""Its a magically enhanced tree seed that the elves like to use to grow forests more quickly. They take a live prisoner and stake them to the ground, a hole is gouged in the prisoners gut and the seed planted in their intestiines, then an elf druid says the magic words and the seed grows fast, roots dig through the victim's body and feed off the still living person, the tree grows into its adult size in a matter of seconds trapping the poor bastard in its roots. The victims who can still talk after the process say it is extremely painful as the tree feeds off of them until they die from the shock and pain which is a mercy, because if the victim survives the initial feeding the tree sustains their life and they will live in eternal agony until the tree dies, is cut down, or they have their head cut off. I had to do the latter more times than I can stomach."You notice Selenas turning pale and change the subject away from the sprouters."But the worst thing was how you couldn't sleep, almost every night the elves would attack us, they would slip around the camp at night slitting throats or just fire arrows into the tents from the safety of the trees. We lost so many people to those night raids. One man got so sick of the forest he started a blazing forest fire to burn the whole place down, the idiot the loggers need the trees not to be chard to a crisp, we ran after the idiot to stop him but the elves reached him first, they made his death slow and painful, for the next week every night we could hear his screams.""Our best guess for the life expectancy in the forest was three days, of course I managed to survive a whole month, become the longest living member of my unit and get a promotion to Sergeant, even with my assignment,""What was your assignment?""Cover, that is how I got this armor, the elves loved to ambush us with deadly arrow storms, my job was to give some squad something to stand behind until we could find some actual cover, then it was my job to run into the rain of arrows and lead the counterattack, flush the elves out of their positions and kill them. I did that job for a whole month before my squad got rotated out and we spent I spent the rest of the assignment in the less dangerous parts of the woods. Then they moved me out here."(1/2)
>>2599254Selenas’s face twist in thought before she asks “Why did the Queen not just treat with the elves, I’m sure that a peaceful solution-,”“Selenas,” you cut her off “There is no treating with the elves when it comes to the forests, and before you ask, no there are no other sources of wood, the kingdom and its needs are expanding Selenas, that is why the Queen needs to fight these wars, and do these sometimes horrible things. Peasants wouldn’t have wood for their fires, smelters no wood to melt the iron ore and produce the things it takes for the kingdom to run.”>Leave her with that.>Push her, ask her what her friends have done.>[Write In]
>>2599254Sounds like Stalingrad, just greener and with prancing fey creatures.>>2599274>Push her, ask her what her friends have done.Make it sound like personal interest, friendly conversation.
>>2599274>[Write In]"Every time we tried to make peace with them, every time we tried to make deals with them, everytime we sent a messenger to them. They send the horse we gave the messenger to back to us with a chopped off hand, stabbed into the saddle." "They do not care who we were or what we wanted or needed. And if given the chance they would gladly see us all as corpses."And then>Push her, ask her what her friends have done. But make the questioning more gentle, we have to get the implication across that unless her hero was literally an Elven god, the elves want nothing to do with us.>>2599301Just the way I like it Anon.
>>2599274I'm pretty tired so this will be my last post, new thread starts Monday so get your votes in.Thank you guys for staying with me, a first time QM, for three whole threads. I will be up for a few more hours so if you want to ask anything, or if you have any tips for me that would make the quest better go right ahead and post'em.
>>2599336Honestly I don't really have that many questions outside of how big the nation is, and whether or not other races like the dwarves and elves have different subspecies. Oh and what would be the other nations/kingdoms/empires of this world. Because it would definitely clear up a few things about how heroes act in this world.Other than that I've been enjoying how Baldur is turning out, especially how he comes off reasonable but willing to bloody his hands for the sake of the bigger picture.
>>2599353I will be able to give you a map of the nation and the world size tomorrow. The nation is pretty big but to give a comparative size think Roman Empire but include all of Europe. There are no subspecies but there are different cultures and factions of the different races. As for how and why the heroes act the way they do, all will be revealed in time.
>>2599369>The nation is pretty big but to give a comparative size think Roman Empire but include all of Europe. Now that's pretty neat, that'll mean there's a lot of internal factions at play here if my guess is correct.
>>2599369When you make a new thread, don't forget to link it here.
>>2599369are there other kingdoms outside of the queens of similar size and strength
>>2599488No most of the other kingdoms aren't as big but through alliances they are its equal in strength
>>2599369I'm done for the day see you in 10ish hours
Just caught up. Really digging the quest so far
