Your body lays motionless on the cold hard ground in the dead of the night alongside your comrades. Droning sound ceaselessly escapes your mouth as you prepared for the coming dawn. A war is coming, and you are apart of the front lines fighting for your nation against filthy barbarians of the north. Soon, this land that stretches between the mountains and the kingdom of Lars shall be stained with the blood of northern savages and good men of the kingdom. The only thing that's keeping you from deserting is the thought of joining the charge led by the King's son Prince Miedas, youngest of his four siblings, rumored for his apparent genius in tactics. It is already quite late in the night, and you would need a good sleep today to face the battle tomorrow. You're not quite sleepy yet though. Maybe you should walk around the camp a bit. To take in some fresh air and totally not to commit desertion.>Sleep>Walk around camp>Attempt desertion like a madman

You walked around the camp, some soldiers haven't slept yet, sharing stories and jokes around the campfire. between the laughs and giggles, frowns and sighs can be seen and heard from them. Understandable as they might not live to see their family after tomorrow, and the general, Sir Reynault and our most esteemed tactician Prince Miedas does not allow booze in the camp under the claim that the soldiers need to be aware and ready for combat at any time. But that's all goatpiss for all you care as you are sure that the general had hidden some wine in his cozy tent. As you are deep in thought, you are sure that the bushes behind you are rustling. You....>Sneak into the General's tent for booze, perhaps even steal some fabric to cover your body while you are sleeping.>Join the not so merry crowd around the campfire and get to know each other.>"Hey, there's something in that bush o'er there."(The success of choices may sometimes be decided with a roll. Some laughed with him, some indifferent. His smile however, was replaced with the expression of pain and agony as his head fell off from his body."Holy shi-,"Before you could finish your words, northern barbarians, by the dozens leaps out of the bushes and trees, charging towards all of you!>Lead the defense!>Retreat!>Run to alert the others and your higher ups!

>>2112313"MEN! TAKE UP ARMS AND DEFEND THE CAMP! READY YOUR CROSSBOW! ONE OF YOU GO AND ALERT SIR REYNAULT AND THE REST!", you screamed at the crowd. With utmost swiftness you unsheathed your sword, blocking a mighty blow from one of the barbarian's axe. The sheer weight of the savage's strike was enough to make your hand tremble. A northerner is significantly larger than a normal man, standing a head over a normal adult. This alone added with their homeland of the mountains which cull the weak made northern barbarians a formidable opponent, each one with the strength of a few good men.You see your comrades cut down one by one just to fell a few of them. The campfire crowd added with soldiers who are alerted nearby is close to 100 fighting roughly thirty barbarians and even then, it seems we are losing. You put up a good fight blocking and dodging the barbarian's blows and dealing some cuts on his sides. But alas, it was not enough....Seeing an opening on your stomach, the barbarian delivers a kick right on your guts, sending you flying backwards, falling on your back on the cold hard ground. On the ground, you can see your fellow soldiers joining you one by one, despair took hold of you. The barbarian you were facing raised his axe above you...."This is where it all ends, huh?", you asked as you close your eyes, tears flowing down your cheeks.Then.....nothing happened. Reopening your eyes, you see the barbarian in a state of shock, a javelin jutting out of his chest. The other barbarians are now being pushed back with the arrivals of knights on horseback and crossbowmen firing their bolts.[Cont.](Will continue tomorrow roughly the same time i started this thread. >>2112350Thank you for running, man!
>>2112350"BARBARIAN SCUM! FEEL THE MIGHT OF LARS!", a knight leading the charge shouted. His armor more grandiose than the other knights around him and with his familiar commanding presence, you can only deduce that this is Sir Reynault. The crossbowmen and knights made short work on the unarmored barbarian as they lay dead one by one. Soon, the fight is over and the remaining barbarians flee back into towards the mountain with a few of them shot down. The part of the camp where the battle had happened was stained with blood and corpses lying around. Sir Reynault descended from his steed and approaches you, finding you amongst the injured and dead."I would have given you a promotion, nay, award you with a commendation for knighthood had you done better child. But....your resilience and bravery is commendable by its own right. Surviving in a one on one combat against a northern barbarian is by itself no small feat. Hm.... you know what? Perhaps I might consider giving you a promotion after all.", he said while pulling you up from the ground.>"All due respect sir, I- ....WE tried our best to fend off the ambush.">"Thank you Sir Reynault. Good men died tonight without even a chance of standing on the battlefield and this is how he react?"That's the spirit! Listen here child, for the reward of leading the defense against the northern barbarians' ambush, you and the other surviving soldiers are exempt of the first day of battle. Rest well.....I have plans for you.", the general said before leaving with his knights. You and the others are then escorted to a tent for treatment. Miraculously you are only left with minor cut and bruises save for the one on your stomach caused by that barbarian's kick. A purple, foot shaped bruise on your stomach stings whenever it is touched. What bad luck....Good news though, the general dropped a pint of wine for each of the injured soldier to recover your morale so that's something. -----------------------------When you woke up the next day, the camp is empty save for a hundred or so soldiers guarding it. It seems to be the afternoon and the others have gone to war. Some of your comrades in the tent is still sleeping, some not. You realized that there is a piece of bread and meat alongside a cup of water beside everyone including you. After you finished your breakfast (lunch), you...>Continue sleeping. >>2113635>>2113638You decided to rise up from your bed, exit the tent and go for a walk around the camp. You see some soldiers assigned as guards sitting under the shade of trees and slacking off. Indeed being in the shades, hiding from the scalding rays of the sun in the afternoon does incite laziness in the hearts of men. They are mostly chatting about the happenings of last night, what happened, such and such. The walk was completely uneventful, and the sun's blinding light caused you to retreat into the shades of the trees again. Not long after that, you fell fast asleep.------------------------------------------"WAKE UP!", a thundering voice tear you away from your deep slumber. It is already dusk and General Reynault stood before you with his grand armor now stained with blood and dirt. Behind him are knights and soldiers whom beaten and bruised, but with victorious and joyful expression. You presumed the battle had gone smoothly.Sir Reynault motioned you to follow him, and so you did. You both accompanied by a few other knights, presumably Sir Reynault's trusted men, entered a larger, much more grandiose tent with a table and a set of chairs in the center of it. On one of the chair sits a young man, few years younger than you by the looks of it. A handsome face and shoulder length brown hair, clothed with an equally, if not much more flashy armor than Sir Reynault. "Prince Miedas, this is the man i had told you about yesterday."So that's the prince huh? He looks at you with disapproval, understandable as you are unbathed and still covered with bandages."Sigh...let's get this going shall we?", he said dismissively.Sir Reynault, the knights, and you all sat on the chair around the table. on it is a map covering the mountainside area around here."Young man, I'm sure you are confused as to why you are here with us tonight. Remember what I told you about promotions yesterday? Well I'm giving you one right now! I will allow you to lead a small group of soldier alongside us knights to strike the barbarians at the heart of the mountains tomorrow."Sir Reynault points his finger at a certain location on the map above the table."But first I need you to take a guess. Why do we only bring a small group of soldiers with us when we still have tens of thousands of good men ready for battle?">Treacherous mountain terrains.>The barbarians have already taken a huge hit to their forces.>To perform a surprise attack on the barbarians.

Indeed the mountainous terrains up north is quite difficult to traverse especially with the large amount of troops we have. The only way to bring that large amount of troops and supplies without taking no shorter than a month would be through the infamous valley in the mountains called "The Jaw of The Beast". It was named after what the barbarians believed to be the evil spirit that was locked by the gods in the mountains. It's true name never known and they simply called it "The Beast" and the valley is it's jaws agape, ready to swallow any living being that stays within it once it's imprisonment reached its end.""Back to the matter at hand general...", Prince Miedas interrupts, his irritation clearly voiced."Oh yes, apologies m'lord. The reason we don't want to go through the valley is because it exposes our troops to ambush rather easily. Not to mention we won't be able to enter and exit the valley in one day, thus allowing the barbarians further advantage of a night raid.""And the ambush part... With soldiers no more than 400 and half of the company of knights which amounts to little over 50, we will travel through a much more hidden part of the mountains. We aim to reach the barbarians' village in a span of 3 days through this path. If we took too long, the barbarians will realize something is wrong and will take the initiative to search for us instead. In the cold mountains which are their land, it would be a disadvantage to us all.", Prince Miedas explains, taking over from Sir Reynault."Your task here soldier, is to lead the 400 along with us knights. Of course Prince Miedas will follow too. Tomorrow, we will be heading out quietly while the other soldiers and knights continue to march around the mountain area to keep the barbarians on their toes. I have high hopes for you child.", Sir Reynault ends the strategy meeting shortly after.[Cont.]
>>2121304After all that, you sat along with your comrades around the bonfire, each of them bragging on how many savages they put down in combat. "Ya saw me slicin and dicin on tha barbarian scum don't ya Merrick?""You? Slicin the barbarians? All I saw was you face down on the mud playin dead because yer afraid of the barbarians!""Hey you did it ta Merrick! Yer right beside me, prayin to god and cryin for yer mommy too I recall!"The whole camp is filled with laughter and joy and cheers of victorious soldiers. Then, a knight called out to you telling you that Sir Reynault wants to talk to you in private.----------------------------------You reached Sir Reynault's tent and enters it. There he awaits with a grim look on his face."I called you here today soldier because I have something to tell you. But first, I must ask you....", Sir Reynault pauses for a moment, taking a deep breath."Will you, or will you not give your very life to protect Prince Miedas?">Yes, I will.>I can't make any promises>No
>>2121309>>Yes, I will.
>>2121309>Yes, I will.

>>2121309Yeah, sure. Seems a decent sort.
>>2121312>>2121313"Yes I will, Sir Reynault.", you answered."That's the answer I wished for from you. Looks like my intuition is right...to choose you...."Sir Reynault takes another deep breath and continues."I fear that one of us knights are conspiring to eliminate Prince Miedas. I fear that one of us are working for either one of the prince's brothers, to eliminate one of the contender froma ascending the throne. I do not know who, but I just know one of us will do it. And what better time to do it other than now, while a war is raging?", Sir Reynault ask."This is where YOU come in. Listen here, I suspect whoever would try to assassinate Prince Miedas tomorrow would try to separate him from the group to perform his heinous deed. I ask of you to never ever leave his side during this battle, no matter what. Do not trust anyone, and I mean ANYONE, in being alone with the prince alone without your direct supervision. You are my contingency plan in the case that i failed to protect him. Understood?""Yes Sir Reynault." you answer."Good. Now go back and get a good night's rest. You will need it."[cont.]
>>2121340Daybreak, the following dayDawn came soon after and the short length of your sleep does not bother you as you had rested for the good part of yesterday. The knights, now wearing attire appropriate for going to such a cold place as do the soldiers ready themselves for the journey. Quite a number of mountain goats were bought to carry the supplies for this journey from the surrounding locales that supports Lars and are tired of the barbarians' pillaging.Hours later, the small army set to end the war with the northern barbarians are already on the path towards their villages. The coldness of the mountains was forgiving around these times of the year. The winds are also quite calm today, yet resupplying will be pretty much impossible due to the horrible footing the passage the mountains provides. The supplies carried is also limited to food supplies as there is only so much the mountain goats can carry. On the front are Prince Miedas accompanied by Sir Reynault followed by the knights. On the back are the 400 men lead by you. As per Sir Reynault's request, you did not let the prince out of your sight for even a single second, not that anything noteworthy had happened in the first day. Prince Miedas rest through the night alongside all of the knights so the traitor would not be able to emerge just yet.On the second day however, the whole convoy is struck with a blizzard. Not too strong that it would be life threatening though. But something in your guts tells you that the worse is yet to come today. And that gut feeling came to fruition in but a moment. As the blizzard settles, your convoy is surrounded by snow furred hounds! It seems that all of you had stepped into the hounds' territory whilst blinded by the blizzard! And what is worse, Prince Miedas and Sir Reynault had been separated from the group! In the corner of your eyes, the figure of Sir Reynault was spotted, and disappears as soon as it came. To tell you the truth, surviving an upfront battle with a savage is quite impressive. After all, there is no way someone who can't even put up a fight against a filthy barbarian kill the prince would he?", he says with a mocking tone."You're facing something bigger than you can ever imagine, soldier! >>2123747The sound of steel clashing with steel echoes inside the cave. Surprisingly, none of you had landed a blow on one another. Even so, the swiftness and skill of Sir Reynault's swordsmanship is hard to match up with. Soon, you find yourself closer and closer to the cave's wall"Just give up! You are merely resisting what you do not understand! Even if you win today, you will just plunge yourself and your loved ones into the abyss!", Sir Reynault shouts at you as both of your swords clash. Before you are pinned on the wall however, you managed to sidestep him, positioning yourself directly behind him. You were not able to catch him off guard however as he swiftly countered your attempt to slice his back. Both of you repeated the same pattern of blocking each other's strikes. In a moment of weakness however, he managed to parry your attack, leaving you vulnerable. He raised his sword for an overhead strike! But then, as if time had slowed, in a moment of clarity, you saw an opening. His stomach is wide open! You performed a powerful kick on his belly, as what the barbarian did few nights ago on you. You did not let that harsh lesson you learned go to waste. The traitorous knight was pushed back by the sheer force of your kick, hitting his head on the wall and was disarmed of his weapon due to the impact. He lay on the ground fazed with his back leaning on the wall.
>>2123758"Why did you do it?", you ask the general, your sword pointed towards him.He did not give you any answer. As you are kicking his sword aside for good measure, he swiftly pulled out a dagger......and stabbed himself in the chest."Sir Reynault, no!"You rushed at him, holding his body. He starts to cough up blood when words comes of of his mouth."B-boy...I...I leave the prince's life on your hand now. Y-you... promised that you will give your very own life for him....don't you?", he gives a light laugh, and then coughs up more blood."Listen here boy, know this, that everything I said to you back then...it was all true. I cough cough/ truly chose you...because I felt that you truly are capable in protecting him. Looks like I...wasn't wrong after all... The prince is not dead. I...merely knocked him out."His breath starts becoming more and more irregular."What I'm about to tell you right now will change your life forever....so listen closely."He leans towards your ears and whispered you something you absolutely did not expect. The revelation that was given to you left you speechless for a few moment. The only thing breaking you away from it was the realization that Sir Reynault's heartbeat is becoming more and more faint. You decided to ask him one last question."Sir Reynault...you did not fight me with all of your strength did you?"He answered your question with a knowing smile, and soon, nothing but the howling of wind echoes throughout the cave.[Chapter 1 END]
