Raise your gun to eye level, hold it there, control the bucking piece of metal as small explosions fire off inside it, driving it into your hands. Run. Jump. Duck. I think the principle is we're always looking for new flesh and shooters, just that sometimes it gets more complicated to join than at other times (criminals don't always just pop out of closets, so with the proceedings a good way almost done, it's a little more complicated to join in)

You might have good luck deploying as an Infiltrator or a person with Oh Yeah.

Though I don't think that's required, you could try to pop out of a closet nonetheless. This particular map is probably good for 2-3 more turns, so I'd just try my luck if I were you. You'd be welcome!

For a quick-start, grab a class, grab a suit, and that's about it. We're even on most archetypes, and nothing is any more "required" than anything else, so pick something you find enticing. Though I think we're a little heavy on Assassins and a little light on Operators, if that helps.

Basically, no rush, so check in every now and again. This particular mission moves a little slower.

Everything looks good to my eyes, though I see you've picked Moonlighter. What you could consider is that after participating in a mission (and scoring one kill or objective aid) you level up, and get either +1 skill or stat. So because you're deploying right in to a fight, you won't have a chance to use Moonlighter for downtime actions. But you could pick a combat skill, and then grab Moonlighter as your level up if you live - then use that next thread, to do some downtime.

Other comment is that picking Stylish Clothes as your free asset is potentially lowballing yourself. Let me find the asset list:

You can use the 500 you start with to instead buy the Stylish Cloths (275), keep the spare change *and* grab an asset (like a place to live, a nicer car or cool casettes). Most assets don't have much use other than the neat bits of having them, though a fast car comes in handy sometimes.

I see what you mean, but I picked Moonlighter because I plan to use the level up to gain +Cool to get to max so I can be relevant and consistent with side jobs.

Your idea with the starting assets makes good sense, I read in the rules and in here recommendations to pick a suit as the starting asset, but it makes sense to just buy one with the starting cash.

There doesn't seem to be any obvious impact for a place to live other than flavor. Does having a place to live... do anything? Outside of the obvious place to sleep.

Heheh, I think that's about the weight of it. You have a nicer place to sleep, potentially somewhere to go to ground if you're hunted by your foes, and somewhere nice to keep your CD collection. It's more of a flavour and fun thing, a way to mark your advancement in the world and such. Though that said sometimes things surprise you a little, in that if you can find a use for things it might sometimes turn out to work in your favour. This is rare, but has happened.

Blaze is a new hired gun, just signed on contract. Why the operator was crazy enough to throw in with the crew in the middle of a war, well, that's their own business. But before there was even a chance to go on a real job, a message came in by pager. It was the code word for the safehouse being attacked. Blaze briefly considered ignoring it. But a job was a job. However, joining the fray is easier said than done. Endless lines of roadblocks and flashing red and blue lights guard every ingress towards the center of Freedom Square and the safehouse. Time felt like it had slowed down. The old soldier had seen it all. Tracers ripping through the air, keeping his allies suppressed. And his daughter, flying backwards, high-caliber fire punching past her armor. No. No no no no no. It wasn't right, it couldn't be happening, he had barely found her again, she was younger than him, she couldn't just die before him. For the first time in a long time, panic had gripped the old man, he was starting to feel himself losing it. His beloved daughter, the one thing left from her mother.

He took a deep breath. Focus. He had to focus. If he panicked now, then she would die. It was not too late. Maybe, maybe he could still save her. He was no stranger to battlefield medicine. But to attempt anything he needed to focus. He tried to swallow his saliva, finding nothing in his dry mouth. For once, his experience was coming in handy. He could feel everything. The sheen of cold sweat on his body, every sound, every last detail felt all so clear. His entire being focused on a singular mission. His body had already started running. The German man, the kid with a strangely familiar face had dropped medical supplies nearby. He could do this. He had to do this.

He rushed over his daughter's broken body, giving it a look, feeling like a cold hand had gripped his heart when he felt no pulse from her. And that's when he saw it. The bright yellow plastic in the shape of a firearm. Weasel's taser. It all clicked into place.

As the gunshots and frags and bombs go off, one after another, the huge armored figure of Hudson slowly sinks; first leaning over and unbalanced, then down onto one knee. And then finally, after unloading everything you got, the big man falls. It's not dramatic or earth-shaking. He just slowly loses his strength and collapses, until he's facedown on the ground.

Alamo, Nishina, Kitt, and Alan all stand over the huge fallen form. Watching. When he twitches, they all step back and raise their weapons again; for a frightening moment they're sure that he's about to stand up again, that he's just getting started and it's time for round 2. But, no. Just nerves firing post-mortem. He's done.

If he had any last words, nobody heard them over the noise.

The few remaining cops have lost their nerve, including their commanding officer. Wolf attempts to escape, but Mizuchi and Strike are waiting for him behind the door. Two pistol shots and a quick, precise cut of the sword later, and the final police leader is dead.

The only survivors are fleeing in panic, or already gone. Everyone else is dead. You've won.

The police have pulled back to their barricades to re-group and prepare. Probably discussing what to do next. Just sending in another wave must seem futile, with how that group got slaughtered like animals.

Of course, you guys are on your last legs, most of you are bleeding from half a dozen holes, and with the basement armory out of stock you're just about out of bullets, bandages, and bombs.

The police don't know that yet. But they'll figure it out soon, if they start testing you again.

Claire is prepared for this. Putting on her trustworthy-sounding dispatcher voice, she gets on the radio and, pretending she's got important orders from up the command chain, directs two groups of cops on the barricades to move away from each other, opening up a convenient hole in their lines.

This will definitely cost Claire her job, and will probably make her a wanted fugitive alongside you guys. The status of legal citizen she carefully maintained for so long is burned up in a single act of subterfuge. But it's the only way out.

Although the cars in the garage are mostly trashed beyond recognition, there are escape vehicles stashed in nearby buildings: a moving truck, a cleaning company van, and an RV. Ray and Angela will run vehicle interference and grab as much attention as they can.

Dragging their bloody limbs and wounded comrades, the crew shuffles in that direction and prepares to exfiltrate the scene.

Everyone takes one last look at the place: the burning, smoking ruin of a dirty old warehouse.

The safehouse was mostly made of bare-bones concrete. It leaked in the rainy season and overheated in the summer. It was too cramped in the offices and too spacious in the main rooms. It was filthy from years of nothing being cleaned. It was a shithole.

It was home.

Claire hands out rolls of bills from a duffel bag to everyone, about 20 grand each. Something about a bank account that was too hot to turn into anything except cash. There's also the bounty from those cops. So at least you got paid for this. Not nearly as much as the bank job, obviously, but that was an outlier.

When she finally has a quiet moment to herself and nobody is watching, Claire opens the cardboard box she grabbed just before she was pulled away. She takes something out and looks at it.

It's a faded and bent photograph. It was taken on a low rooftop overlooking the city, with the sun fading below the horizon in the background, painting the picture in pink and orange hues.

In the foreground center is Claire with a big smile, giving a peace sign for the camera.

Standing on her left is Angela, wearing her leather bike jacket, standing confidently.

To the right is Spider. He's clad in the heavy coat he wore in all type of weather, leaning heavily on his cane, and he's glaring at the camera. Not a man for smiles, that one. But perhaps his glower is softer than it usually was.

And in the middle, standing behind and looking over them, a faint smile breaking through her reserved composure, is her. The Boss.

"Come on," Blackjack says. "We've got to go."

"Yeah," Claire says. She puts the photo back in the box, closes the lid, and allows Blackjack to lead her away.

Standing over Hudson's body, Napps is briefly reminded of his first night with the crew. A giant crate that failed to connect, and getting shredded apart as a result. But he was here, to watch Castle and Hudson go down, to help end them. He's getting better. Yet, despite the nightmare that was tonight, he hopes that there'll be something for Castle elsewhere, far from this mortal coil. Maybe Hudson, later.

But for now, he has to go - he rushes into the garage, passing the broken body he sensed. Didn't know her, but he'll pour out a drink tonight. Can't hide out on the streets, and bringing heat to The Block would mean pain.

'Jackal's earned a drink and food,' he thinks, seeing Sleeper as the only untouched car in the garage. After tonight, he's not feeling like going out. He could make an excuse about staying low, or wanting to use his groceries.

In truth, going anywhere but home didn't feel right.

She leans against her cover, blood and fractured armour splashed across her front. The adrenaline fades, the pain spikes, the gunner almost falls over there and then- reminded of the lead weights embedded into her armour, her clothing, her. Only now she realises….

Ramirez barely has enough to brace for impact before a rather inconveniently sturdy support pillar brings his wild ride to an abrupt end. The bandaged man goes sprawling into the footwell of the armoured truck in a sprawl of limbs. After a moment to shake himself, Ramirez slowly gets up to find that the SWAT assault has been mopped up. It's over.

Except... Ramirez goes running to the sight of his father, frantically clutching Weasel, his little sister he just met, in a death grip.

"Honey Badger, old man! What's..." And then Ramirez saw. And Ramirez knew. "I... goddamnit. I- I'll give you some time to- to be with her."

"Heckler, you did... you did great that MG. I'll see you..." Ramirez wants to say 'back at the safehouse', but this is the safehouse, ruined and useless after the battle. "...Around."

Ramirez is in such a shock that when Alamo calls him in to ride with him and Mizuchi, the burnt man doesn't question, just wants to get away. "You don't often ask me to go anywere, what's up?"

Both men get the same response. "I'll explain in the car."

With the other two joining in on the fake taxi ride, Alamo would drive off through one of the openings before blending into the traffic in the heart of Heat City. He adjusts the rear view mirror to see both of the people he has worked with for a long time. They were what remained of the honor guard, the Boss' most trusted muscle. The man removes his face covering completely before speaking. "I'm leaving. Forever. I already planned on it, once we killed Spider I'd leave. And things getting too hot too fast."

He pauses, driving the car and taking a moment to gather his thoughts. "You guys know I have a wife. I've mentioned her before back in the old days. But we have a kid on the way. If they... If anything happened to them I'd burn this city to the ground. So we're leaving. Tonight."

In the end Wolf did the one thing he knew how to do. But it didn't save him. Not that it ever did. He lied collapsed there executed. In the end Rico couldn't end him where he stood. Making his way to his corpse he gave him the final mercy of closing his eyes and took away his badge. Respect between Rico and Wolf had already gone ages ago. Well it felt like ages. It was certainly a far cry from the fallout of a year ago and had felt like a nightmare. Perhaps now the morning would finally arrive to wake people. Looking over at the other end of the main room lied the body of his ex-instructor too. Ridden with all manners of projectile, cuts and bruises. Even that mountain fell. Somewhere out there would probably also lie the body of Castle. More then just broken. The report of the coroner, the new and other experts would be abysmal.

Lt. Hudson? Mutilated
Cpt. Wolf? Executed
Casualties? Astronomic.
Survivors? Moral shattered. Most resigning.
A sorry sight. A sad sight.

In a way, this is probably what was needed to get rid of the bad blood within the HCPD but it was a shame it needed to come this way. This was just a start. Now the multiple criminals of the city would feel the void the left behind but perhaps this time... But not now. There was still some work to be done before a fresh start for the department could begin. There still was the matter of who was behind all the corruption and mess everyone was finding themselves in. Perhaps a more satisfying end. For now Rico just looked at the badge he took from Wolf while leaving from the premise.

"Careful Heat City, I am the Captain now."

. . . It was relieving to make this statement if he could ever make it aloud soon. But he felt mostly sad that he had to lose so much despite prevailing so much.

Mizuchi blinks a few times, not used to seeing Alamo without his classic face mask on. He's stunned to silence for a little while, before pulling himself together. "Well...shit man...I get it. I'm happy for you. Gonna miss having you out there with us, means its just me and Ramirez here left from the old guard, but all this shit isn't worth not being there for your kid." He reaches for a cigarette pack in his pocket, but decides against it in a crowded taxi. "Talk to Angela and Claire about an exit plan? I'm sure they've got something for it, and after tonight, you'll need it."

Making the most of Claire's gift Strike, like the others, begins to shuffle off in another direction. All to avoid the ones chasing after them. Taking one last look at their old safe house, he's overcome with a strange feeling. He was never as zealous as the others, and yet, he did fight and bleed along side them. At the very least, it didn't go without a fight. So for a little while longer, he watched everyone else give one last mourning look. And their grief would be his.

Then that would be it, and it would be business as usual by the time the next job rolled around. Skipping his usual stop, he planned to hit the bed early for the night, only to trip on one of Heat city's many wounded. Their jobs weren't the type to skimp on collateral. The man grabbed his leg as Strike tried to recover, so he gave several rough shakes of his leg, forcing the man away. As a former policeman he did truly want to help, at least when he was younger, he yearned to be someone's white knight. Now though? Something happened somewhere, he was no longer that good hearted man, he used to panic after ever firefight. Now? Gunfights are the norm, as well as allies biting the big one.

But this man...

"It's you, isn't it?" The man grabbing him was hardly homeless, the alleyway was just so dark, Strike merely mistook his shot up gear for raggedy clothes. He might not survive the night without him. This old man, bleeding from a large gaping wound on his torso, was an old detective he knew. Very old.

"You're going to need something for that wound of yours." Strike grumbled, then hoisted the man up onto his shoulder, and together they made for his home.

"Really? Jeez... congrats I guess." Says the burned man, Ramirez not entirely sure how to even respond. Alamo had always just been a constant presence at the Boss' side, same with Angela, Claire, the Twins, all the others... Ramirez'd somehow never even thought about how the other man might have his own life and family. As though everyone were as stuck to the cause like Ramirez himself.

"So... guess this is goodbye then, 'lamo. You got any idea where you're gonna settle down, or is that 'need to know'?" Settle down. Ramirez doesn't know why he feels so strange saying those words.

"Thanks fellas." Alamo replies before pondering their other questions. He thought about how to answer them as he pulled the taxi into a gas station.

"I've got a plan setup through some other contacts. Where that is will be revealed if I send a postcard, maybe." He trusted the two, but a paper trail could always lead back. The cab was pulled to a stop at one of the gas pumps as Alamo sighed.

He turned to face the two men, giving each of them a nod. "One of you can drive this the rest of the way. I'm getting out here and taking another car. Make sure this gang doesn't fall apart."

Though just as he was turning to leave he remembered something. Something he almost wished he hadn't. "Right. I didn't want to leave the gang down a man, especially not after tonight. So I called up an old associate to fly in from other business. It... It is Fresco."

A former gang member that left for mercenary work some time ago. Obnoxious, wild, never on time. He was always doing drugs or was out partying. And the nicknames he gave people... Why did Alamo call him back? Because the guy was one of the best shots they ever had run in the gang.

"Well... better a gun that only works twice than no gun at all. But... let's just say that we'll miss you more 'cos of it."

As Alamo turned to depart, Ramirez realised, fully, that this might be the last time he ever saw his old colleague. And Ramirez can't explain his urge to call out one final town.

"ALAMO! You've got a good thing with your girl of yours! Take it from me... never take that for granted, ya hear!? Good luck and don't get yourself killed out there!"

A beat.
"Do you have somewhere to stay, to lay low?"
A shallow breath, followed by a long one. Adrenaline is starting to fade and the stimulants have ran out minutes ago.
'Get it together, if you don’t do it now when are you gonna have the chance again?' the thought keeps him from running away like he usually does.
A quick glance at Weasel's body, obscured by Badger's, reaffirms the concept.
"I..." Damn this is harder than he thought "I could get you a spot. I... don’t want to lose sight of you— cause I am scared, terrified, of losing you."
"I want to be honest with myself, once in my life, and stop running. Face these challenges head on instead of taking refuge in cheap thrills and a strong front."

After that he tried to comfort Badger, but the old man didn't really register his words, and he wasn't the right man for it anyways. Not with his empty words. Not when he chose his own lover over the old soldier's daughter when it mattered the most.

Later he gets on his truck, parked in an alley nearby, and as he drives away from the burning warehouse crackling and collapsing bit by bit —the flames reaching for the sky like a Phoenix's birth— he ponders what will happen next. To him, to Seline, to the Gang, to the City.

Alamo shrugs when they get annoyed about Fresco. He understands, but pretty much all of the other old contacts have been used already or are too hard to reach. "Goodbye Ramirez. Goodbye Mizuchi. If anyone asks you can tell them whatever you want. I won't be around to care."

The unmasked man would then take his leave, leaving the keys for the others. Across the parking lot he hopped into a beat up old truck that he had dropped off here by Boone as a final favor. Alamo danced the line of legal driving speeds as he went through the drove through the rest of Snake River. Through Sunset Springs. His heart raced. She was still safe, wasn't she? If they had found the safehouse could they have found his home? Alamo's hands gripped the wheel tighter as he entered Silver Pines proper. Police sirens blared in the distance.

He had put all the work in. They would go to Heat Harbor and catch a shipping boat together after having paid off the captain where he would also pick up the papers for his new identity. He'd have to finally explain everything instead of being vague about it. Alamo just hoped that his wife would forgive him for keeping her in the dark for so long. A fire engine roared by as Alamo refocused to enter his neighborhood. The truck was pulled to a stop into the driveway. Everything was quite. The lights were off. She was fine, wasn't she? As Alamo stepped out of the truck he hid the Azure Dragon with his coat. Walking up to his front door he found it was unlocked, the sound of multiple voices could be heard. The man stepped inside-

And found his wife asleep on the couch watching the TV. Instantly the tension melted away. The suitcases he had told her to packed were right be her. The man smiled and gently went to wake up his wife. "Cmon Lucia. It is time to go."

"Mmm... Jacob is that you?" The woman replied as she was stirred awake.

He smiles, taking one of her hands to help her sit up. "Yeah. It is me. I'll get things packed while you wake up and explain on the way. Thank you for trusting me."

She smiles back. "Thank me again if you mean it."

The couple enjoy the moment together before driving off. A long talk is had as the night goes on. But their faith in each other stays strong and the man promises to make this new life a perfect one. The old truck flies under the radar as they get to the docks. An old captain isn't too keen on renting bunk space for his crew until a wad of cash is slapped into his hands. And with the deal sealed the two escape Heat City to live a new life.

That same night at Heat City International Airport a man in his 20s steps off a plane to grab his luggage. When an officer and their dog start to look at him the man walks right up and pets the dog. He nearly catches a punch before playing it off as his brother having the same job in his home state.

With his walkman playing Heartbeat by that guy Valdez he hums to himself while getting a cab to the cheapest motel around. In his motel bathroom the new arrival to Heat City throws up in the bathroom until he spits up the parting gift from his last boss. What better way to celebrate returning?

Late out at night, on the mean streets of Snake River, two men can be seen sitting in an idling taxi, the vehicle lit up by a single lonely streetlamp. Not an unusual sight for two armed men to be waiting in a car, but one of them is carrying a sword, and the other is covered in bandages? What few people see this would wisely choose to not have anything to do with the freakshow.

Ramirez sighs, leaning his bandaged head back against the headrest. Not for the first time, he reflects that it seems everyone he knew back in the old gang is gone. Dying loyally for the gang, or left for a better life. What's that say about him and the man sitting next to him?

"Seems it's just the two of us left, hey Mizuchi?" He says suddenly, turning to face the blond swordsman. "Well, plus Angela and Claire, of course. But... you gotta think. Boss' gone, Spider's gone, The Twins are gone, Okheana's gone, everyone's gone. 'lamo was the most goddamn rock solid of us, and he's going too."

Ramirez fishes out a well-worn cigarette packet out of his jacket, flicking one out and unwrapping his bandages just enough to catch the thing between his teeth. In the dim light of the streetlamp, his burn scars look deeper, even more grotesque than usual.

"Who's next? You? Angela, or Claire? Because I can read the writing on the wall and it doesn't spell much good for us. You know, the guys who knew the Boss and believed in her."

Jeez, when'd he get so sentimental? Then again, it's not hard to be when it feels like the cause faded long ago and you're only just now catching up.

(Perhaps it’s just the blood loss, but even though that name may not be technically hers, despite the time, despite the setting, it would not be so bad that it was.

….so distracted that she barely resists, weakened as she is, when you bundle her and Kit and some others into the vans to escape.

…the buzz fades. For a moment, the artisan seems about to speak, as she realises you’re closing the doors on her not-really-home, the base, the gang’s land- our land.

….but she’s not so blind to how the world works, that in her heart of hearts she doesn’t know that the police are not just another feuding clan.

On the way home, she says nothing, and manages to barely cry. She almost never visited the hideout; it was still almost home. They had won; but not really, only brought time to soften their loss. She should be so happy, and now she isn’t sure if it’s for good or for ill that joy and despair mix so evenly.

The younger man with the sword puts his feet up on the dash, contorting himself in the seat. "Yeah, eh? Crazy to sit here and think about it. At least one of us left alive, eh? Two, hopefully. I hope Okeana is doing well, wherever she is."

The samurai really had seen a lot in his service to the boss, soldiers coming and going, but the 'execution squad' as he called them to himself, had remained static through it all. They weren't all assassins, obviously, but they were the ones the boss went to when she knew she needed something done.

It was why Spider lured them into that ambush alone, after all. And why they fell for it, it wasn't unusual for the man to contact them. Mizuchi had felt nothing but hate for him for a long time, but thinking back he'd been one of those pillars too, in his own way. The thought made his stomach turn.

His reverie is broken by Ramirez's next question, the man looking over with a somber smile. "I...don't suppose it much does, at this point. Maybe one of those two, maybe not. They're the last pillars holding this gang together for us soldiers."

"As for me..." The ronin shakes his head and laughs. "Where the hell would I go? This is the only life that holds meaning for someone like me. A daredevil's life, sword in hand. I realized that a long time ago, made my peace with it, hoped everyone else did too." He shakes his head. "I miss them."

"...Yeah, me too." Ramirez admits. "I don't really see a life for me outside of fighting. Who and what for, well... we'll see what happens after all this."

It seems as though the burned man is still not willing to fully admit his own feelings regarding the rest of the gang out loud, even here, even now, even after everything. But what he means internally is perfectly clear, even though Ramirez himself may not be fully aware of it.

"Well, I'm sticking with the crew until I die or the gang itself ends. I'm... well, I'm glad at least it won't be just me doing the same. Even if you're a weird Japanese comic lover using a weapon from the stone age." Ramirez can't help but needle his long-time ally.

The hulking, bandaged man turns in his seat, offering Mizuchi a cigarette from the box. "Want one? We can call it a toast to the departed or some shit."

Mizuchi can read the man, but won't press him on it. Things were tough, and a friend of both had just gone his separate ways. Now really wasn't the time to prod at his expression or lack thereof.

"Mhm, sounds about as good as a terrible plan can get, eh?" He'll nod to the offer of a cigarette, taking it and drawing his lighter from his pocket.

"About the fourteenth century, rather than the stone age. The katana is an evolution of the tachi, a much less refined weapon. And you've seen the damage they do, even Alamo believed in them, and he's just about as 'modern' as you are."

He shakes his head, unable to stop himself from going on a miniature rant about his favored weapon. "But...a toast to the departed sounds good to me."

"You're such a fucking geek," Ramirez chuckles. "But I can't say you aren't hell with that thing. To the ones that've gone, then."

For a few moments then, Ramirez and Mizuchi are sitting there in the car, smoking away at their cigarettes in companionable silence. Ramirez breaks it first by coughing.

"I could do with some air. Gotta go find Honey Badger anyway, my old man probably needs someone to talk to. See ya 'round when Claire calls us in again."

Ramirez cracks open the the door of the cab and clambers out, casually waving goodbye to his colleague as the bandaged man disappears into the night.

The fight is over in an instant. One moment, Friedrich is burning a cop, suppressing his laughter and readying himself to go burn the leaders. The next, Kaori, Herr Alamo and the new girl are standing over the corpse of the giant while Mizuchi (him!) cuts down the fleeing ratte that fancied himself a wolf.

Friedrich winces as the adrenaline and the painkillers fade and his body begins to scream internally for the abuse he just put it through. He laboriously looks around, takes one deep breath after another, and limps towards the corner where multiple people still have need for the last medic bag he had. He's right on time to hear Chaser's confession. His breath catches, his feet stop working. A black vice grips his heart. He blinks, opens his mouth, closes it again. He can only stare at the battered, happy couple, at the grieving old man who could not save his daughter. There's nothing he can do for any of them, nothing he can say, so he drags his feet to another corner where he can sit, get his breathing and his heart under control and wait.

Friedrich is the last man out, as he has given himself one last task to accomplish: Make sure that what the cops occupy is nothing more than a blackened, burned down, empty husk. With the entire tank of his werfer to serve as tinder and all the spilled alcohol and broken furniture to serve as kindling, it does not take long at all for the blaze to grow into an roaring inferno. He pauses on the pavement outside and turns back to admire his handiwork, the funeral pyre of the building that so many had come to consider their home. He could not claim the same, not when he spent so little time here. Yet as he pauses to light a cigarette with the last sputters of his werfer's flammen, while he looks at the dancing flames consuming the structure, he can not deny to himself that it, and the people he had met in it, had become more important to him than he could have ever imagined back home.
