Before the green garbed hero arrived, before the princess’s power arise, before the blade of evils bane, before the kingdom of Hyrule waned, there were kings and queens, soldiers and spies, all battling to keep the kingdom alive. They fought the king of evil’s might, but were all cast down into deepest night. Without their bravery no land would there be, for the hero in green to have set free. So come all ye listeners and harken to me, while I spin thee a tale about the heroes in mail. The common solider whose blood was spilled, to buy time for the hero with the iron will.

"How much further is it?" You pant as you scale the steeply climbing trail alongside Sotrea.

"We're still a few hours out yet. Why, you tired?" She goads only slightly less out of breath than you are.

Ignoring her barbs, you suck in a lungful of air and press on ahead of her, but only few steps later you find yourself trudging alongside the Sheikah scout again even more tired than before.

Thankfully the trail starts to even out again as you reach the crest of the mountainous cliff. "We should stop here and wait for the others to catch up. We wouldn't want to get too far ahead now, wouldn't we?" Sotrea says breathing hard as she sits down near the edge of the trail. Too exhausted to say anything you sit down next to her and look down over the edge of the cliff. Far below you, the rest of the caravan is slowly snaking its way up the cliff. You'd started the assent at dawn and now it was about mid-morning. By your reckoning it'll probably sometime after noon before the caravan finishes its ascent.

It had been five days now since your encounter with the creatures Impa identified as Chus, in the passes leading to this mountain. Five days of slowly marching this caravan of injured soldiers, refugees, and royalty through the countryside on your way to the village of the Sheikah, Kakariko. Now less than a day's journey from your destination. You feel the anticipation begin to rise in your chest as you think about what awaits you there. You're going to join the Sheikah, the shadowy hidden hand of the Royal Family. You the son of a fisherman from a small costal town are going to join the ranks of perhaps the most the elite of the royal bodyguards. You didn't know what to expect when you decided to become a solider, but it certainly wasn't this. You've come such a long way in such a short time that looking back its dizzying how quickly you've advanced. Then again, your path here has hardly been an easy one, let alone regular one. You've been faced with challenges that have nearly killed you several times yet somehow, you've scraped by and live to fight on.

Sotrea's hand waving in front of your face breaks you from your reverie. "Hey, Matthias, are you in there?"

"Sorry, I was lost in thought, did you say something?"

"Yeah," Sotrea says slightly annoyed. "I asked if you've seen a view like this before."

>You have actually, although the cliffs near your village only afforded you a view of the sea and they definitely weren't this high up.
>You've seen a similar view before when you went on a trading expedition with your uncle to one of the mining towns near Death Mountain. Though the landscape wasn't as green as this one.
>No, you haven't seen anything like this, you never really spent much time taking in the scenery before, you mostly kept your nose to the nets of your father's fishing boat.

"I have, there were some cliffs near my village with a great view of the sea. Watching the sun rise over the ocean is one of my fondest memories." You say picturing in your mind the gradually reddening horizon as the first few rays of sunlight peak over the water. You give a contented sigh and "What about you Sotrea, have you ever seen the ocean?"

"No, I haven't. I was born and raised in Kakariko, these mountains and valleys are my home. I haven't seen a body of water bigger than the village springs. But I've always wanted to see the ocean I've been hoping that one of our missions would take us there but so far most of my assignments have been to inland towns and villages." She lets out a sigh and gazes out over the landscape. "And as a Sheikah we don't really get days off, or the freedom to go where we please. We're bound to serve until the day we die or are too old to be of any use."

There is a deep sadness tinged with no small amount of regret in Sotrea's words. You'd never given your decision to sign up with the Sheikah much thought, in the heat of the moment you went with the choice that felt right but now hearing Sotrea's doubt, your own starts gnaw.

Why did you join Sheikah? And by extension why did you become a solider?

> Becoming a Sheikah was your only way forward just the same way becoming a solider was back then. You became a soldier to not be stuck as fisherman and you became a Sheikah to not be stuck as a soldier.

> You joined the Sheikah because you felt like it suited you better. You joined the army because you were better fighter than fisher, and now you joined the Sheikah because you'd be better as that than a solider.

> You did it because it was your duty the king was calling for soldiers so you signed up. Then when Impa asked you to join her you saw it as a better way to continue that duty.

>[Write In]

What do you say to Sotrea?

> "Has no one ever left the Sheikah before? I'm sure there's some way to leave if you wanted."

> "Have you ever just asked to go to the ocean. I'm sure if you insisted, they might have some mission that'd take you there.

> "Well I can't take you to the ocean but if you close your eyes I can describe it in such detail you'll think you're really there."

You did it because it was your duty. You reaffirm to yourself. That's the whole reason you came this far. But you don't think that Sotrea sees her place in the Sheikah the same way you do.

"Well, I can't take you to the ocean but if you close your eyes, I can describe it in such detail you'll think you're really there."

Sotrea snorts at your response, but you insist "No really try it. Close your eyes." She rolls her eyes at you, but then closes them. You close your own eyes and recall one of the many memories you have of the sun rising over the ocean. You describe to her the cool ocean breeze, the salt smell in the air, the sand between your toes, the sound of the waves lapping against the shore. You describe it all to her in the most detail you can manage. You get so lost in your own descriptions, that you almost don't notice when Sotrea rests her head on your shoulder. Your words eventually fall away and you and Sotrea simply spend a quiet moment on your imaginary beach together.

You don't know how long you and her sit like that on the edge of the cliff, but eventually Sotrea lifts her head from your shoulder. "Hey Matthias do you see that?" You open your eyes and follow Sotrea's gaze to a small cloud of something rising up from between two of the small hills on the green plains below. You squint hard at the cloud and try to discern its source.

Eight days ago near Hyrule Castle

"Rohm the Gerudo are closing in. We aren't going to make it." The younger prince Jinom says to his elder brother. "I'll take what's left of my riders and some of our knights and see if I can't buy us some room to escape."

Rohm looks to his brother, his kin is drenched in sweat and caked in dust from the road. His armor is scratched and dented in several places from his battle at the southern passes and subsequent retreat. Dark circles highlight his eyes and show him to be more exhausted than he lets on, but his eyes themselves still burn with determination and the fire to fight on.

>"Very well Jinom, buy us some room, but no heroics get back to us as soon as you can alright."

>No, a King should lead by example "I will lead our soldiers in a charge. You keep the rest of the men moving and get mother to safety. You've risked enough on my behalf. Now let me do my part."

"Very well Jinom, buy us some room, but no heroics get back to us as soon as you can alright."

"I will my liege." Jinom says with a differential bow, "Keep mom safe I'll be back." with those final words Jinom wheels his horse around and rides back down the retreating column picking up knights and riders as he goes, all the while strategizing his attack.

He spots three possible locations for his charge:

>Just after that hill ahead the relatively open ground would let you make the best use of your cavalry, but it wouldn't be too hard for the enemy to spot you and prepare for your charge.

>In that copse of trees up ahead you wouldn't be able to charge or fight from horseback very easily, but neither would the enemy plus the trees would likely keep you hidden until the enemy are right on top of you.

>If you wait a little longer you could fight them at the bridge up ahead, it would bottleneck your foe nicely and likely be the best position from which you could fight. But if the army doesn't make it over the bridge in time you may be forced to fight on the enemy's terms on the ground before the bridge.

Decisions, decisions anons what will you choose...

The Gerudo will think a force like our own would wait them on a more open terrain, let that thought of theirs be their fall ! The terrain doesn't favor us in combat, so ready your swords, our lances will not be of use, it will be our blades that will spill the blood of the enemy ! Keep mind of the trees roots for your steeds, and stay close to your fellows. Give the enemy no respite, cut and trample down the invaders that murdered our king and betrayed us ! > 3 Passes = The column's haste leaves the Gerudo scrambling to catch up, and they will arrive at the bridge disorganized and unprepared.

The bridge that is where the charge will be made, but the army must make haste if this plan is going to work. To that end Prince Jinom enlists his brother's help and together the two of them get the column to exert itself a little more. Everyone, though already winded from the pursuit, picks up the pace and the draft animals are pushed to their limits. A risky maneuver, but it pays off as the column begins to match pace with its pursuers.

"Onward men, we'll outrun these Gerudo yet. Give me everything you've got." Rohm exhorts his men as they pile over the bridge. When the final wagon passes over, Jinom rallies his men for their charge

Ten knights and twice as many lancers array themselves before the Prince. Anticipation thickens the air as Jinom stands before them and removes his helm. "Men, Knights, Noble sons and brothers of Hyrule, take heed of my words! The Gerudo ahead of us think they have us on the run, that we are beaten, that all that remains is to ride down a bunch of cowards in flight. Show them otherwise. Show them the Courage of the men of Hyrule. Show them the fury of the men of Hyrule. Show them the steel of the men of Hyrule. Give them no respite, no quarter. Cut down and trample these invaders that murdered our king and betrayed us!" Behind Jinom, the first of the Gerudo pursuers charges onto the bridge, her fellows a disorganized trickle following behind. With a final big breath, Jinom slams his helm back on and turns his horse around. "Now forward men, For the Goddesses! For the King! For Hyrule!" He shouts and spurs his mount forward his men joining him in a Wedge as they thunder across the bridge lances down and shields up.

>After running the numbers their was nothing the Gerudo could have rolled that would have saved them they are utterly destroyed. You guys are lucky the bridge plan worked out or you might of had a tough fight on your hands.

The ground quakes as the charge speeds across the bridge. The thunder of hooves drowning out all other noise as the Wedge of knights closes with the first of the approaching Gerudo. Through his visor Jinom can see the look on the Gerudo's face shift from a wild war cry, to one of shock and disbelief, before finally twisting into one of terror. She attempts to stop and wheel her horse around but it is far too late. Her horse slips on the stone as it tries to stop and both horse and rider fall to the ground. Their screams go unheard as the trampling hooves of the knights’ ride over them.

The rest of the Gerudo finally catch on to what's coming and try to retreat and regroup but they aren't fast enough. One by one their disorganized formation is run down and the retreat becomes a rout. A few brave souls loose arrows from their short bows at the charging knights but none of the missiles find purchase through the knights' heavy armor. As the final foe, not fast or smart enough to run is struck down by a lance, Jinom lifts his visor to take stock. The bridge and the ground before it, are littered with dead Gerudo, the field has been won, for now. In the distance the Gerudo who managed escape meet up with the main body of their force it appears that those slain were only a vanguard and that the bulk of the enemy force still remains. They advance at a more sedated pace, being careful to maintain formation and avoid the same fate that befell their vanguard.

While the Gerudo still outnumber Jinom’s force, the destruction of their vanguard has significantly weakened them and put them on the back foot. Another successful charge might destroy them, or at the very least scatter them ensuring the Hylian army’s escape. Rohm’s words echo in Jinom’s mind, but the adrenaline in his veins and the victory cheers of his men are driving his heart forward.

>Order another charge the enemy must be totally routed if an escape is to be made.

Sorry if I wasn't clear in my descriptions, but the bridge is constructed of sturdy stone, it would take a lot of time and effort to collapse it. The rest of your idea would certainly be possible though.

Order the men to dismount and pile up the Gerudo corpses for create a small barricade. This at first might seem nothing but an annoyance of wasting time to pass it and a small offense for the Gerudo, but there is a third reason.
After making that barricade, mount up again while slowly retreating and throw invectives and curses. If the vanguard had a bannerman Gerudo corpse, take her banner and cut it before letting it drop and walk over it with our horse. This should be a good build up for force them to break formation and attack us enraged, and if not being in formation still means being slower. If they take the bait we will order our men to run, split in two, turn around and charge the Gerudo attacking them from right and left. And you guessed it with those two charges bringing destruction : that barricade of corpses will act has our cork for the Gerudo formation making it a slaughter.
Here is said by Jinom (he will also dismount for provide help and find the banner of the Gerudo bannerwoman if there was one in the vanguard. Nagos is a random name i took from a Hylian name generator) :

>"Men dismount, i want a barricade on the bridge made from their corpses for slow down this formation ! Once done, mount up again and fake to retreat while cursing their lineage. When we see them charging us at my signal sprint, split in two lances and turn around for give them what they richly deserve. I will take the right lance, Sir Nagos take the left lance, we will shall crush this foe here !"
invectives/curses section
>"Gerudo let me tell you what we righteous knights of Hyrule see behind us : The worst desert scum, a band of honorless curs, a collection traitorous vermin and Oathbreakers ! May the goddesses curse your damned people thrice, giving you famine, disease and ruin !" 2 Passes = Your men are able to cobble together a makeshift barricade and present the enemy with a gory, but effective obstacle.

Here's the new combat rules your going to need them, your first battle is upon you

Revised Combat rules:

Three types of stance/formation

OFFENSIVE:
> Counters Maneuver
> Wisdom Bonus applies to attack
>Builds Momentum

MANEUVER:
> Counters Defensive
> Wisdom Bonus split between attack and defense
> Most varied in its effects

DEFENSIVE:
> Counters Offensive
> Wisdom Bonus applies to defense
> Lowers Momentum

Wisdom Bonus: Applies half your wisdom score to your attack or defense depending on your stance/formation. If your stance/formation counters your opponents your full wisdom score is used.

Momentum: Adds to your Power in combat depending on its level
>Level 1: Power Bonus +1
>Level 2: Power Bonus +2
>Level 3: Power Bonus +4

Gaining Momentum: Different stance/formations can effect Momentum in different ways but the general rules are…
>Offensive stances/formations build your momentum by 1
>Maneuvers stances/formations maintain the current momentum
>Defensive stances/formations lower your momentum by 1

With the Gerudo still a good distance out and advancing slowly, Jinom quickly concocts a plan. "Dismount men, gather the Gerudo dead and pile them into a barricade. If the Gerudo want to fight us, they'll have to advance over their own dead."

The troops dismount and begin to drag the bodies of the Gerudo onto the bridge, after looting them of course. Although, looting the dead soon becomes the main goal of the men and only the more diligent among them continue to stack bodies. Jinom himself dismounts to get the troops back in line and encourage them. It is during this moment of vulnerability that the Gerudo strike.

Jinom looks away from chastising the looters at the sound of approaching hooves. The Gerudo had closed far faster than anticipated. He shouts a warning to the men, yelling at them to remount and form up, but it is too late. Arrows come streaming in from the 40 some charging Gerudo as panicked men try to get back on their horses. The knights are pounded by arrows, but their heavy armor protects them and their horses from the worst of the attacks although the occasional shaft finds knightly flesh. The lancers fair far worse, both they and their mounts are struck repeatedly by shafts killing or severely wounding many of them as they try to pullback away from the lethal rain. As Jinom mounts his horse an arrow strikes and slides off of his helm leaving his ears ringing as a second shaft comes in behind his knee piercing the armor, but only scratching the flesh. Finally remounted, Hylians reform and Jinom himself has a chance to take stock.

>2 damage applied to all knights
>53 attacks at 5 damage applied across the lancers kills 11 and severely wounds 9
>Jinom takes 2 damage

At the far end of the bridge the Gerudo had ridden in close before coming to a stop and forming a tight and thin line to maximize the number of troops firing. Their short bows and static position allowing them to pour arrows on Jinom's force. The Gerudo’s Continuous Fire had been effective, with most of the lancers killed or injured to some degree. Jinom is left with only 9 lancers still in the saddle and 10 knights to face the advance Gerudos

The Gerudo begin to advance on Jinom's battered men. Pressing forward, hoping to finish off, or so it would seem. Out of the corner of his visor Jinom spots a portion of the Gerudo force split off and begin circling around to his side. Realizing that the Gerudo have divided their forces he orders the men into a Wedge before bellowing "CHARGE!" The Hylian formation lunges forward surprising the advancing Gerudo and smashing into their line. The impact kills six enemy riders and injures the other seven, scattering them before the impetus of the charge. The broken Gerudo formation tries to recombine, giving Jinom an opening to retreat or deliver another blow.

"Sir Nagos!" Jinom shouts over the din of battle "Take half the men, finish up here, then hammer the anvil."

"Yes Sir!" He yells back before taking a breath and bellowing "LEFT LANCES WITH ME!" In a voice so loud that Jinom is unsure how the man doesn't deafen himself shouting through his helm like that.

"Right lances to me!" Jinom orders in a voice that sounds almost inaudible compared to Nagos's deafening roar, but the men heed his call and Split out of Wedge following their prince as he moves to intercept the flanking Gerudo force. The flanking Gerudos barely have time to react as half the Hylian force crashes into them. Lances meet swords as the two combatants clash. The Gerudos desperately slash and slice at the Hylian knights, trying to fend off their lances and strike at the armored men wielding them, but to no avail. In the tangled melee, the knights let go their lances and take up their swords hacking and hewing at the Gerudo pressing into their ranks and getting dangerously stuck in their superior numbers. In that precarious moment, Nagos arrives with the rest of the knights, his charge smashes into the Gerudo from the side causing their whole formation lurch at the impact. Several more Gerudo fall as they are impaled on lances or hacked by swords.

>19 attacks at 6 damage applied across the Gerudo kills the 7 injured by the previous round. Then 3 more are killed and 6 injured in the subsequent attack.
>You suffer no damage
>A quick head count shows 24 Gerudo riders remaining

The battle is now truly joined, what will you do now?

Over the cacophony of combat a Gerudo voice barks an order and a horn is sounded. Reacting quickly, the Gerudo disengage, pulling away from the melee and yielding the bridge to the prince's forces. Jinom orders a quick return to Wedge and a pursuit, but the Gerudo release volleys of arrows as they Withdraw harrying the knights and slowing their pursuit. After only a short chase, Jinom's battle lust clears and he realizes his pursuit is futile. He calls a halt and watches as the Gerudo flee over the horizon abandoning their attack on the marching army. With the enemy routed and the field in their possession, Jinom orders his men to tend to their wounds and check the field for survivors.

While the knights are fine, having only suffered the occasional bruise or minor wound, The lancers are in bad shape. None of them will leave this battle without scars. Of the eleven who had fallen only two are well enough to try to save the rest are either dead or too far gone to save, and are given the mercy of the goddesses. The injured lancers are given leave to go and seek treatment for their wounds, as well as to bring word to the king of this victory. The knights finish the dirty work of ending the lives of any Gerudo or beast still alive on the field. Their pained groans or cries of agony are silenced one by one.

As the battlefield quiets, Jinom looks over the carnage, surveying the destruction wrought at his men's hands. In the aftermath his blood cools and as it does the tired gears of his mind start to spin again. It is then that he notices something odd about the dead Gerudo at his feet. He had fought the Gerudo at the southern pass and been chased halfway across Hyrule by their army, yet the Gerudo lying in the dust before him looks nothing like the Gerudo that had forced him from the pass. She was thinner, leaner, a little smaller in size. Her weapons and armor were crude homespun things that would barely meet the standards of a peasant militia. Even her horse was on the small and malnourished side. These Gerudo were not the elite fighters he had faced in the south, these were conscripts, which begged the question if Gerudo elite weren't here, where were they? And why was only a harassing force sent after their army. These and other such questions plagued the young prince as he left the battlefield. His mind puzzling over his enemy's moves.

Meanwhile at Hyrule Castle

"You summoned me,"

"Ah Captain Laro, come have a seat." The Gerudo King gestures to the chair next to him. Laro sits as ordered and looks over the table covered in books before him. "Tell me captain, do you read?"

"I can,"

"Excellent, then you can help me on a little project. You see captain, among my people there are stories of powerful relics said to grant their wielder amazing powers and boons. Now while I have investigated many of these and found them to be false, a few of them have lived up to their legend. You saw an example of one such relic's power on the balcony." Gannondorf's demonstration of his magical far sight, flashes through Laro's mind making him shudder. "One such relic is said to reside here in the land of Hyrule I want you to go over your kingdom's records and find the location of this artifact for me."

"You want me to research legends and fairy tales for you?" Laro says disbelieving his own ears.

"If that's what you want to call them, so be it, all I ask is that you find it for me. A generous offer if there ever was one, to spend one's captivity reading story books I could think worse things one could be doing." Gannondorf says his last words tinged with a threatening tone.

Laro considers the offer. The Gerudo King is correct, research into bed time stories is one of the easiest things he could be doing, but at the same time it would keep you away from Gannondorf's more relevant plans, meaning that any information that could send to King Rohm would be of less strategic value, besides that if what Gannondorf said about his power is true and he did acquire it from some legend or fairy tale, could Hyrule afford for one of its sacred objects to fall into the enemy's hands?

"I will research these legends for you, on the condition that I am able to pick whomever I wish to aid me in my task. I am no scholar and the Royal Archives are vast. I will need many erudite minds to help me sift through its contents and distinguish fact from fiction."

Gannondorf smiles broadly "As you wish, you shall have whoever you require to find what I ask for."

"Even should they locked in your dungeons?" Laro asks holding Gannondorf's gaze.

"Even should they be locked in my or mine enemy's dungeons. Simply ask and you shall receive."

"So be it," Laro says with a nod. "The first people I need are the archives curators assuming your soldiers did kill them during the attack, they should know where to start looking."

"Good, once you have who you need start looking into an artifact called the Triforce in particular the Triforce of Wisdom and I want weekly reports from you captain I do not tolerate indolence among my people and suffer it from you or yours." He says cold cruelty creeping out from under his mask of geniality.

As the Gerudo King leaves Laro starts to formulate his first message to King Rohm. While it isn't much the king should know that the Gerudo are searching for an artifact known as the Triforce.

Present day on the road to Kakariko

Your eyes focus on the cloud of dust Sotrea pointed out. You squint into the distance before letting out a sigh of relief as you realize it's no dust cloud just the last bit of morning fog burning up in the noon day sun.

"Alright, enough slacking you two" the stern voice of Impa says from behind. You and Sotrea turn to find Impa staring impatiently at you. Showing no signs of exhaustion from her climb she orders the two of you to go on ahead and notify the village of your arrival. "Although if the lookouts have been doing their jobs, they should already know that we're here." Impa adds before shouting more orders down the trail at some haggard looking soldiers.

(1/2)
>>
>>5895742

You and Sotrea hurry off before Impa can scold you for still being there when she turns around. You jog down the trail for some time before Sotrea stops and motions for you to halt as well. "Let's see if the sentries are awake. Walk just a little further ahead and you'll come to an up rooted tree with tall grasses all around. That's where the sentries should be, don't try to hide just walk very quietly, you'll know if they're awake or not if you can make it past the tall grasses without a knife being thrown at your feet." With those words Sotrea takes a breath and your brain starts to itch as you lose focus on her and she disappears. With nothing to do but play along you walk as quietly as you can down the road.

>1 Pass = You make it to fallen tree, but are too loud and awaken the sentry.

You tread softly down the dirt trail Being careful not to step on any twigs or accidentally kick any loose stones. You are making good progress and as you approach the fallen tree that Sotrea had mentioned you're feeling pretty good about your chances of slipping past the sentries unnoticed. That is until a bird, startled by your approach, flutters up out of the grasses squawking frantically. You wince as the bird flies up into sky and a panicked voice from the grasses shouts out "Stop, who goes there."

"I'm a messenger from Impa, she sent me ahead to notify Kakariko that there's a large caravan of refugees coming and that you should make preparations to receive them." You say to the grasses. There is a long pause before the grasses on your right rustle and a boy, a few years younger than you, wearing a disheveled Sheikah outfit, with a shortbow in hand steps out onto the road.

"What?" he asks a confused look on his face, as strands of grass fall from his unruly head of silverish-white hair.

You sigh and repeat your message, the boy continues to stare at you with a puzzled look until finally Sotrea steps out of the grass behind the boy and smacks the back of his head. The boy jumps and shrieks spinning around and fumbling for an arrow from the quiver at his hip. Before his fingers find an arrow though, Sotrea snatches the bow from his fingers and thwacks him with it across the top of his head. The boy falls on his butt and looks up with fearful eyes as Sotrea looms over him.

"Mishko you boko brain, clean the gunk out of your ears and listen." Sotrea barks in a tone that is reminiscent of Impa's commanding voice. "The man said to prepare the village for some guests, a lot of guests. So, get off your ass and go tell the elder that Impa is back and that she's brought a lot of people who need a place to stay. Now, where is the other sentry? There's always supposed to be at least two of you watching the road."

"F-Fefen s-s-she-" Mishko begins to stammer before Sotrea cuts him off.

"They put Fefen out here with you?!" She shouts genuinely incredulous. sighing loudly, Sotrea runs her hand over her face. " Deliver the message to the elder, then go get Fefen, then two of you better get back here and be at your posts and AWAKE or Impa's going to hang the two of you up by your ears."

Mishko scrambles to his feet and takes off at a run down the road. "You can be scary sometimes you know." You tease Sotrea, "I almost took off down the road to tell the elder that we're here."

"Better I yell at him than Impa. Seriously, if she would have found him first. You would have heard some real shouting and she would have made him run back on all fours with his sandals in his mouth. And I shudder to think what she would have done with Fefen although Fefen might actually deserve it."

The two of you follow the path that. Mishko had run down at a more sedated pace along the way. Sotrea describes in vivid detail a few of the punishments Impa had given here when she'd first started out under her. A little walk further and you finally see it Kakariko village. It is nestled in a valley between three mountain peaks. With houses climbing part way up all three peaks. The houses themselves were of an unusual construction, you hadn't seen before, with oddly angled roofs and doors that slid open rather than swung. Sotrea starts talking excitedly pointing out little landmarks and important buildings as you descend into the valley. "Oh, you've got to try some of Zan's noodles everyone here says they're the best then you should..." Sotrea chatters on excitedly starting to pull you off the main road and down some side paths. You are tempted to let her take you, but the day is far from over and the last thing you want is to found slacking by Impa, at least according to Sotrea's stories it is.

Sotrea takes you to one of the strange curved roofed buildings in the center of the village. As you pass through a set of colorful cloth curtains and enter the building, your nose is assaulted by a series of savory aromas as well the distinctive punch of alcohol. Sotrea walks up to the counter behind which an older man labors over a cook fire. Sotrea opens her mouth to speak when a woman about your age and dressed Sheikah garb, sitting down nearby slurs a greeting to her.

"Hehey Sssotrea, what're you doing here?"

You can see Sotrea's face curl in disgust for just a moment, before melting in an overly pleasant smile. "Fefen, long time no see. How have you been?"

"Oh, you know, same ol' same ol,"she says taking a drink from the cup in front of her. "Another day another drop."

"But what about you, I haven't seen you around much since they stuck you with that hard ass Impa."

"Yeah, she's been real tough on everyone since she got assigned to attend the king." As she says this a red faced and and out of breath Mishko enters and dashes over to Fefen. He blanches white when he sees you and Sotrea and pulls meekly on Fefen's sleeve muttering. "Fefen c'mon we've gotta go."

"Yeah, that promotion went straight to her head." Fefen says before turning to Mishko "What is it Mishko. I thought I told you not to bother me."

"B-but Fefen it's important we've got to get back to our post Impa's coming."

"Impa? Psh, she's at the castle. She's days awa- wait..." Fefen pauses, a sour look on her face "Sotrea aren't you supposed to be at the castle with Impa?"

"Yes, but you see there were some unforeseen problems. So, we came back."

"So if you’re back, that means Impa is back, which means..." You watch as the gears spin in Fefen's inebriated brain for a moment before a look of sheer terror fills her face and she staggers up right. "I gotta go." She says before stumbling as fast as she can out the door followed quickly by Mishko.

"Zan I don't even know why you served her," Sotrea says sitting down as Zan, a middle aged man with thinning hair, clears the cups away from Fefen's spot. "You knew she was supposed to be on duty."

"I serve anyone who pays. Besides you're here and I don't think you're off duty yet, but I'm going to serve you anyway." Zan responds, setting a fresh cup before Sotrea and filling it with a slightly cloudy liquid.

"Fair point." she says taking a sip.

"Who's your friend. It's not often we see new faces around here."

"Matthias," you say taking a seat next to Sotrea.

"And what brings a Hylian like you so far into the mountains?" He says pouring you a cup of the strange liquid.

"I'm here to join the Sheikah."

Zan cocks an eyebrow and scrutinizes you up and down before shrugging and stepping back to his cook fire. "You're a little old to start training. Most start as children and train through adolescence. You must be pretty special for Impa to have chosen you so late."

"How did you-" you start, but Zan cuts you off.

"The only way you would have made this far was with Impa's approval, which is not something easily gained. What did you do to earn an endorsement I wonder?"

>"Let's just say I am observant and worked well in a difficult situation."

>"I don't know, you'll have ask her yourself. All I know is that she approached me one day and offered me a chance to join."

"Well, if I had to guess, it probably all started when I spotted her and her team in the rafters at the King's banquet..." You regale Zan with your exploits, enjoying the strange brew he sets before you. It had a unique flavor unlike that of the ales at the castle, but it still had the same, pleasant inebriating effects. Along with the booze, Sotrea orders you some of Zan's famous noodles. What is served to you is a bowl of noodles in a hearty broth with slices of beef and onion. It's probably the best food you've had since the Gerudo attack at the castle.

Zan keeps the drinks coming and you keep enjoying both them and the meal. You finish catching Zan up on the events that brought you here and Zan gives a solemn shake of his head.

"So, war has come to Hyrule and the nation must face it without its King. Dark times lie ahead."

"It's not as bad as it could be." You say, the effects of the alcohol maintaining your good cheer "The prince-er I guess king Rohm and most of the Royal Family made it out and the armies of Hyrule are still pretty intact, plus once our allies hear of the Gerudo's treachery they're bound to come to our aid."

"But you're down a castle, have an unproven leader at your head, and your army has yet to be rallied. While your enemies sit in a well-fortified position, with all their forces assembled before them, and are being led by a clever and powerful king. Maybe pessimism is getting to me in my age, but I don't think things could get much worse for you."

With Zan's sobering words echoing in your mind, You and Sotrea finish your meal and your drinks and leave. Once outside in warm noonday sun Sotrea says "Don't let what Zan said get to you, he's always kind of like that. No one goes to his place for the sparkling conversation. Oh, you've got to see The Great Fairy's fountain next c'mon." Sotrea pulls you along and as you focus on keeping pace the somber mood inflicted on you by Zan melts away aided by nice weather, pleasant company and alcohol still tingling nicely through you.

Sotrea takes you on a path that leads up one of mountain peaks until you come to a small secluded wood on a leveler part of the ascent. The place is alive with the sound of birds, insects, and other wildlife. The vegetation is lush and well-tended, the path well clear of debris. Eventually you come to glade with a large spring in the center of it. The water in the spring is immaculately clean and so clear you can see the bottom. Sotrea stops at the water's edge and fishes around in her rupee pouch before pulling out a blue one. She whispers something to the gem before tossing it into the spring. It lands with a satisfying plop and sinks into the water. "People say that a long time ago a Great Fairy used to live in this spring and that she'd grant the wishes of people who'd make donations to her. Of course, I've never seen a fairy, great or otherwise at this pond and I've never had any of my wishes come true despite all the money I've wasted here. It's still worth a shot though, go on make a wish."

You reach into your rupee pouch and pull out a blue one, turning it over in your hand while you contemplate what you would wish for, if anything.

>You wish to succeed at your Sheikah training and become a full-fledged Sheikah.

>Guardian School: Combat focused School with medical side training. Naza is from this School.

>Open Eye School: Support focused, aids others with their knowledge both mundane and magical. Practices a unique type of Sheikah magic.

Putting your lips to the Rupee you whisper your wish for the success of Hyrule in its war with the Gerudo then throw the gem into the water. It lands with a plop sending ripples across the surface of the spring. You are about to step away when another idea comes to you, and you lower the head of your spear into the water. You concentrate your thoughts and ask that if war cannot be won with a wish, then to grant you the strength to weather the coming conflict. Wishes made you're about to withdraw your spear from the water when sensation washes over you. It's a feeling of... approval? The sensation lasts only a moment then fades and while you don't feel any stronger you feel more determined. You withdraw your spear from the water and walk back with Sotrea.

>Your little R&R has left you relaxed and ready for the future you will gain increased results/benefits from your Sheikah training when you have finished it.

Exiting the forest, you look down the mountain to the village below and see a stream of people pouring in from the pass. The caravan had arrived.

"Shit, looks like the tour is over we'd better get back and help out before Impa starts a serious search for us." Sotrea says with a sigh.

"Yeah, this was fun though. Thanks for showing me around."

Sotrea gives you a smile and says "There's still one more place that you have to visit, but I guess it'll have to wait until later, c'mon."

When the two of you at last reunite with Impa, the scrutinizing glare she gives you scolds you more than words ever could, but that doesn't stop her from using her words. "When I sent you two to notify the village of our arrival, I expected you to go notify the elder and the guard captain yourselves. Not, send an errand boy to do it while you went off drinking." Impa lets her words hang for a minute before shaking her head dismissively. "Now time is short so I'll have to spare you your punishments until later. Sotrea you are to assist Naza and Inoh in getting the column settled. Matthias you will accompany me to the elder, she must approve of you before you can be accepted as a Sheikah, and what a fine impression you'll make drunk and dirty as you are." Impa looks like she wants to say more but she clamps her jaw shut and simply beckons you to follow her.

(2/2)

Impa leads you at a pace just shy of a jog, up one of the mountains to a large building wooden that looks like a mix between a manor and a temple. On the path up you pass by a few open-air structures in which you can see people of varying age groups performing training exercises. You don't have time to gawk though, as Impa leads you by quickly and you're soon passing by two guards whose garb is unmistakably Sheikah but with a lot more armor. As you enter the building proper an older man in a colorful flower-patterned robe greets you with a bow "Impa, the elder has been expecting you follow me please." You walk behind the man as he shuffles along at a pace far slower than the one you took to get up here. The sedated pace does mean that you get a good look at the beautiful tapestries and art that cover the walls on your way through the building. The man leads you to what looks like an audience chamber or grand hall to your eyes and gestures for you to enter.

Impa stops you with her hand and says in a quiet but stern voice to remain outside the chamber until she calls for you. Obeying her command, you stand to the side of the door as she and the servant enter the room and slide the door shut. In the silence you can hear sounds of exertion coming from a nearby open window. From where you are standing you can see a man practicing sword techniques on a dummy in an open-air courtyard. Next to the window you also notice a scroll depicting what looks like an ancient battle of some sort. Distracted, you take a step away from the door.

>Take a closer look at the scroll

>Watch the man as he practices, his technique while strange is fluid and oddly mesmerizing.

You step away from the door and take a closer look at the scroll. It depicts a blonde man in odd green clothing raising a longsword above his head preparing to strike at another man depicted emerging from a black cloud, wearing a fearsome boar mask and reaching toward the man with a clawed hand. There is great care in every brush stoke of the painting and you're mesmerized by how the artist managed to make it look like the characters were moving in a still painting.

"Ah, The Hero faces The Beast an excellent piece," a voice says from behind, startling you. You spin around to find a slightly bent old woman with large glasses staring past you at the painting. "Sorry, I didn't mean to startle you young man. Are you curious about this painting?"

"Y-Yes, I mean, it definitely drew me in." You stammer caught off guard by the old woman's silent approach.

"It was drawn by a man called Pikango, despite his early art's crude nature, he became quite the master towards the end of his life. He has many such paintings depicting the ancient struggles of Hyrule's past. I could show you more if you wish."

"Um, sure," you answer still a little off balance. "But I can't right now I'm-"

"Waiting for an audience with the Elder." She interrupts "I assumed as much, you're from that group that just arrived hm? Tell me is it true that Hyrule Castle has fallen to the Gerudo."

"Yes," you confirm "How did you know?"

"News travels fast around here and besides, why would a group of injured soldiers come here instead of returning to their castle, hm? So, the castle has fallen to the Gerudo invader led by a powerful and mysterious king. I'll have to do more research on him." She mutters the last few words to herself “Tell me young man did you see this Gerudo King before you fled here."

"See him, I almost fought him."

The woman perks up at this and leans closer to you. "Tell me, what was he like? how did he present himself? how did he fight? did you notice anything strange about him?"

Taken aback by the flurry of questions you take a second to recall your encounter with the Gerudo King and decide best how to describe him.

>He's a barbaric berserker he killed men with his bare hands

>He's a cocky and deceitful snake, he swaggered his way into the castle under the guise of trying to negotiate a peace then killed King.

You explain to the woman that the King of the Gerudo is a cunning and charismatic individual. That he played the friendly, jolly, and peace seeking ruler until he was close enough to execute a well-planned assassination and invasion of Hyrule. He would have succeeded totally were not for Rohm's courageous stand.

The woman listens intently to your description of the Gerudo King. Nodding along thoughtfully while whispering her own observations under her breath.

When you finish the woman says "Very interesting, I believe I have the measure of the man now. Thank you very much, this will help me formulate our strategy in the coming days. If you have time I'd like you t-"

The woman is interrupted as the door to the chamber opens and the old attendant calls to you. "Matthias, the Elder will see you now."

"Drat, well when you have a moment, I'd like to speak with you again young man. Just tell one of the servants that you wish to speak with Purah." The old woman says before tottering off, leaving you with the old servant.

You enter the audience chamber and proceed to its far end, where Impa and an old woman more wrinkled than a raisin, are seated around a low table. The chamber is incredibly quiet and your soft foot falls seem to echo loudly on the wood floors as you approach two women. You stop before the table and look to Impa for instruction. She is calmer than you've ever seen before, her face the picture of tranquility. She shifts her eyes to you and says "A low bow is the appropriate greeting."
You hurriedly bow at the waist then remain standing until Impa tells you to sit. You wait for a long moment in silence as the two women sip their tea. While you wait, you take a good look at the Elder. She appears to be well over 100 years old her skin is dark and splotched with liver spots and other blemishes. Her skin is so shrunken and wrinkled that you can't even see her eyes, only the puckered slots where they should be. Her long silver hair is done up in an elaborate headdress that you're almost certain is the reason she so hunched. Both the silence and your gawking is interrupted by Impa "Matthias this is Iphath the Elder of Kakariko and head of the Sheikah. She will see if you are worthy to become one of us."

Iphath reaches her gnarled, wrinkled hands out from the depths of her robes and extends them out to you. "Take her hands and look into her eyes, that she may judge your character." Impa says and you comply reaching your hands across the table. The Elder takes your hands and lifts her head to look at you. You watch as the puckered slits that are her eyes pull back to reveal the milky white irises of a blind woman. You stare into those unseeing eyes, unnerved at the sight of them, as Iphath "stares" unwaveringly at you. Your eyes begin to itch, but you find that you can't look away. There is a subtle glow behind the Elder's eyes and to your astonishment, a symbol, the red eye of the Sheikah reveals itself emblazoned on the surface of Iphath's eye. You are paralyzed, unable to move or even blink as those red eyes stare into you, seeing you, all of you. Your past, present, and future laid bare. Then the red symbol fades and you are freed. You pull away and rub your stinging dry eyes. Iphath relaxes and her eyes shrinking back to shriveled slits.

Letting out a sigh Iphath finally speaks "Oh child, are you sure this is what you want?" She says her voice surprisingly smooth and gentle for someone of her age. "When you became a soldier, you swore an oath to defend Hyrule and the Royal Family. Ever since then you've upheld that oath and always sought to fulfill your duty to the best of your abilities. You've shown your devotion to that cause through your willingness to sacrifice yourself time and time again. You are a great soldier, but if you are to become a Sheikah you must cast all that away. Your duty will be to something greater than a kingdom. For the truth is we Sheikah do not protect Hyrule the Kingdom, we protect Hyrule's very existance. To protect Hyrule itself, you must be willing to sacrifice not only yourself, but your friends, your family, and the world as you know it. So, I will ask you child, are you willing to sacrifice everything for the sake of Hyrule. To not flinch even in the face of unbearable torment and the loss of everything you hold dear. Are you willing to be a Sheikah?

>You swear it, you will abandon everything to become a Sheikah and save Hyrule.

>You cannot swear such a thing to abandon everything and everyone you hold dear would be to abandon the very thing you're fighting for.

"I am, I will be a Sheikah and save Hyrule no matter the cost."

Iphath nods solemnly and turns to Impa "He is ready, begin his training."

Impa nods leads you from the room as you exit, Iphath calls out. "Be strong child, for the path you have chosen is a difficult one."

Once outside Impa's first order to you is not to begin training, but to assist in settling the caravan. So, you spend the rest of the day unpacking supplies, setting up tents, and moving the injured. When you are finished, it is nearly dark and you're dirty, tired, and sore. You are ready to call it a day when Naza and Inoh grab you and drag you to "Some place you'll enjoy after a hard day's work." the place you are taken to is a bath, or rather a hot spring and Naza and Inoh were not lying it is heavenly. The water doing wonders for your sore and tight muscles.

As you soak in the rejuvenating water with Naza and Inoh you...

> Chat with the two Sheikah, you're curious if their initiations were like yours.

> Cut your bath time short and go find Sotrea, you were supposed to visit one last place with her today.

> Enjoy the relaxing warmth then head off to bed your training to be a Sheikah starts tomorrow and you want to be well rested for it.

Realizing you still have to visit one last place with Sotrea, you cut your bath short. Making your apologies to the others, you dry off, redress, and head out. Only to bump into Sotrea leaving the women's bath.

"So, are you ready?" She asks "There's just one last place you've got to see."

"Ready and willing,"

"Good, originally I was going to show you the hot springs, but I saw that Naza beat me to it. I think the place I’m going to show you might just be better though."

Sotrea takes you away from the lights of the village, up onto one of the mountain slopes. The two of you sit down beneath the canopy of a large tree and Sotrea snuffs out her lantern. "Now watch." She whispers and as your eyes adjust to the dark you see it. Dozens of fireflies dance, whirl, and blink in the air around you creating a wondrous show of flitting lights. "If you lie down and look up, you'll really see something awesome." Following Sotrea's lead you lay back onto the grass and look up. A vast sea of stars greets your eyes and between stars sway the glowing lights of fireflies, like little boats floating on an astral sea.

"You know this is the first time I've ever taken someone to see this. Most everyone here, well, they feel too much like family and anyone who's a Sheikah... they don't want get too attached." Sotrea turns over to look at you. "You took the oath and became a Sheikah today, didn't you?"

"I did," You nod.

"When I took my oath, I was so excited." Sotrea says a bitter smile on her face. "All of the training I'd done was finally going to be useful I was going to go out and do amazing things and see all the stuff I'd heard about from the other Sheikah. But I told you how that turned out. After all this time I finally realized what I swore myself to the day I made my oath. I swore to be imprisoned, chained to a job and duty for the rest of my life. Never to be free to do what I want, what I need to do. And now you've sworn that same oath." She says, tears wetting the corners of her eyes. "And now you're going to start your training and I'm off to goddesses only know where on Impa's next mission. And I don't know when or if I'll come back. Promise me something Matt," she says wiping at the tears on her cheeks "Promise me you won't change, that even through all of the training that you won't and that no matter what we'll see the ocean someday. Swear it to me above your oath as a Sheikah, please Matt, swear it to me that together we'll stand on the shore and live that moment we shared on the cliff. Please."

Looking into Sotrea's tear streaked face your heart aches to say yes, but what of the oath you just swore can you place Sotrea ahead of your duty to the Sheikah and to Hyrule.

>"I promise Sotrea, that no matter what may come. We will see the ocean together."

You take Sotrea into your arms and whisper "I promise Sotrea, that no matter what may come. We will see the ocean together." She flinches at your touch, but relaxes at your words and settles into your embrace.

"I'm sorry Matt. I shouldn't be so demanding, but I've never had anyone I could talk to about my doubts before. Everyone else seems to like their place here, but I just... I just want something more out of life." She says with a sigh, falling silent and letting the crickets drone fill the air again.

You lay there with Sotrea for a long time until finally she untangles herself from you and stands up. "Thanks Matt, for listening to me and well for everything. It's getting pretty late though and I know tomorrow's going to be a busy day." She says helping you to your feet. She gives you a hug and kisses you on the cheek "Thank you, Matt... just thank you." She says before departing and leaving you with a warming sensation where her lips touched your skin.

Okay anons I will give you a choice, it will take two years for Matthias to finish his Sheikah training. In the meantime, the war for Hyrule will be fought. Now, currently Hyrule's forces are scattered, their capital taken, and their king is dead, but the Queen and the heir, now King, are alive and still willing to fight. So on the War Progress Scale, Hyrule is a 3 out of 10. Now you can accept this current situation as default and have it remain for the next two years or you can roll for the progress to shift in one of two ways. Do a general roll for the results of two years of fighting with the progress shifting up or down by 1 or 2 points, or take the war season by season (8 seasons) choosing the princes' strategy for each one and rolling to see if it succeeds or fails.

So how do you want to handle this?

>Let the situation stagnant and stay at 3 out of 10.

>Roll for a possible +2 or -2 to the war progress

>Play out the war for 8 seasons and see where you end up at.

The air inside the King’s tent is stiflingly hot as the King, his brother, and the Queen Dowager look over a map of Hyrule spread on the table before them. “Well things could certainly be worse but not by much.” Rohm says tapping his fingers on the table.

“Right, first things first we’ve got to call up all of our forces get every man who can hold a spear drilled and ready to fight.” Prince Jinom says coming up on his brother’s right. “Although I wouldn’t say no to a raid on the enemy right now, just when they think we’ve slunk off to lick our wounds.”

“That’s all well and good Jinom, but we should consider matters of logistics first.” The Queen says stepping up to the table. “The Royal Treasury and Armory are in the hands of the enemy right now, meaning they have all the money and weapons they could need and we have neither. We should focus on finding a place to set up and start stockpiling all the material of war we will be needing. I have the feeling that this conflict will not be resolved in a campaign season.”

“Well said your grace,” says a voice from the shadows. All three Royals jump as Impa steps out of the shadows.

“Impa,” Rohm sighs in relief. “When did you get back?”

“Just now, and I bring news. One of your soldiers, a Captain Laro, has made contact with one of my people in the capitol. He reports the Gerudo King has set him and the other prisoners to work on a special project researching ancient legends of Hyrule. He says he will keep us updated on what he finds as well as on any plans of the enemy that he overhears.”

“Laro is alive? Well, that’s a relief to hear. He was a well trusted member of the castle guard I’m sure anything he brings us will be helpful.”

“Indeed your majesty. My people will double check to be certain, but I too believe this Captain Laro will be useful to us. Other than that, the Sheikah stand ready to assist you my liege.”

“Right then, our first step should be…”

Okay anons, looks like we’re going to play this out. So, every season there will be planning session where you will decide how to allocate your time. To simplify things, since you have three royals present in the army you get a maximum of three actions, you also get a Sheikah action. Now all of the Royals can do any mission with the exception that the Queen cannot perform combat missions. Any royal not selected for a mission will simply assist the King with his task improving his odds of success, unless otherwise specified. The formatting for the votes should be as follows.

King:
>Action

Queen:
>Action

Prince:
>Action

Sheikah:
>Action

After the task for each royal is selected, we will go one by one resolving them, some actions are simple and will just require a roll while other actions might be a little complex and will involve some troubleshooting/extra votes. So, with the formalities out of the way select up to three actions for this season and a Sheikah action.

>Call up the Hylian Army.

>Send to your allies for aid.

>Gather funds/resources for the army.

>Seek combat with the Gerudo.

>Rest and train the army.

>Establish a permanent headquarters.

Sheikah Actions:

>Spy on the enemy. (Provides an intelligence boost to one of your actions this turn)

>Guard the Royal Family. (Protects the Royals from harm when on missions and will make it more difficult for the Gerudo to perform an assassination mission on them)

>Thwart enemy action. (Attempts to cancel one random enemy action this turn)
>>

Queen:
>Establish a permanent headquarters.

Prince:

"We'll need a place we can set up at. Some place safe where we can stockpile supplies and fall back to if we have to." Rohm says studying the map.

"If you want safety how about Fort Barten," Jinom suggests, putting his finger on a point in the western mountains. "Mountainous terrain, single entry point, exposed approach. It'd be pretty easy to hold that place, if don't mind having to put in a lot of elbow grease. The place has been abandoned for a while now. There's also the cold and the fact that the place becomes rather inaccessible to friend and foe alike during the winter months. If you want safety though, look no further."

"Safety is a priority, but so is accessibility, if we're going to be bringing in men and supplies, as well as coordinating with our allies." Queen-Dowager Hilma says tapping a spot in south central Hyrule "I suggest we use the summer palace at Kolomo. It's centrally located with good road access, it draws fresh water from Lake Kolomo which protects it on a least one side, and it allows us to keep an eye on traffic coming from the south. Should enemy reinforcements come from there we'll know far in advance."

"Sure mother, but it will take a lot of work to fortify that place and in the meantime, we'd be awfully exposed." Jinom says rubbing his neck.

"What about Goponga?" Rohm says "Out here in the east. It's at the convergence of the Regencia and Tamio rivers with good roads as well. We've got a lookout post there and if we fortify it and the crossings, we'd have a decent position."

"Yes, we might also be able to stop any rivers traffic down from the castle. I like it." Adds Jinom.

Hilma shifts uneasily and clears her throat "We could but it would mean violating the treaty your father made with the Zora after the Drought War. We promised never to fortify that area. It was like pulling teeth to get them to agree to let us keep the lookout post there. It's your call son, but let's try fighting only one war at a time please."

Where do you make your headquarters at?

>In the western mountains at Fort Barten.

>At the summer palace near Kolomo.

>Near the Regencia and Tamio rivers at Goponga
>>
For some context, the Drought War was fought between the Hylians and Zora over access to the rivers and fresh water sources that run through the land. During this war a drought happened and in combination with the Zora some how cutting off the flow of water to the rivers, Hyrule dried up and the king was forced to sign a peace treaty with the Zora acknowledging their dominion over all fresh water sources in Hyrule large enough for a Zora to swim in. In practice what this treaty meant was that the Hylian's must limit fishing and pollution in fresh water sources and pay the Zora a fee based on cargo transported on the rivers and tolls at bridges and other river crossings.

"You've a fair point mother, very well you and I will start fortifying and get everything set up at Kolomo. Jinom I want you to head out to our allies and neighbors and see what aid they can spare us."

"And mind your manners Jinom these aren't your drinking buddies be tactful and polite." The Queen-Dowager adds.

"Yes Mother." Jinom rolls his eyes, feeling like a child at court again.

"Impa I want your people close for now. We're still vulnerable and our enemies may try to end us before we've begun. I want you to ensure our safety and make sure no harm comes to me or my family."

"As you command my king." Impa says with a bow.

"We all have our tasks let's get to them." Rohm exits the tent and begins giving commands to start moving the camp.

Who will Jinom visit first on his diplomatic mission?

> The Goron's they were good friends of your father and will likely be well disposed towards us.

> The River Zora, while once enemies, relations between your two peoples have normalized somewhat in recent years. It might be wise to gain their aid, or at least their neutrality in the coming conflict.

> The Rito, even though they are a rather insular people with limited contact with outsiders. They do partake in a decent amount of trade with the Hylians who live near their mountainous home. If you can secure their help it would be a mighty boost to your cause to have allies capable of flight.

> The Ocean Zora, distinct from their fresh water cousins are perhaps Hyrule's biggest mercantile partners. While they occasionally clash with the Hylians over fishing grounds on the whole they get along well. With their help you could acquire almost anything you could wish for. Including war materials.

The trip to the Goron's home on Death Mountain is uneventful, and as Jinom rides through spring countryside he finds that he can almost forget that a war is being fought over this beautiful land. On the approaches Death Mountain, the ground becomes drier and rockier, farms become grazing lands before transitioning to solid rock and gravel slopes.

Jinom's party begins its ascent up the road that will lead them to Goron City, or more accurately to Goron City's main entrance. One could say that all of Death Mountain is Goron City since its tunnels worm and wend their way through the bulk of the volcanic mountain. Along the way, Jinom and his men pass by a few mines and Goron's pulling huge carts of ore. A few of them stop to wave at Jinom's group, one even bellows a greeting in Hylian as they ride through.

After an exhausting climb that leaves the horses lathered breathing hard, Jinom comes to the massive metal doors of Goron City. He dismounts and announces himself to the two heavily armed and armored Gorons guarding the door. They respond cordially saying that their Chieftain, Darman, has been expecting them and to proceed to the Chieftain's Hall. The massive doors are slowly pushed open enough for Jinom and his guard to enter. Beyond the door the first thing to strike Jinom is the heat, it had been getting steadily warmer as the group climbed but now so close to the central cauldron of the volcano it was as hot as a summer’s day. The heat was quickly forgotten however at the sight of the markets of Goron City. Nestled in an outer crater of the volcano, the markets sprawl all over the crater floor and up its sides. The central thoroughfare is lined with shops selling trinkets, gems, precious metals, and unique spices that only grow on Death Mountain. Behind the shops lay workshops of all kinds, working the wealth dug from the ground into a multitude objects. Gorons bustle about the streets on both business and pleasure and there is scarcely room for Jinom and his entourage despite the Goron Guards clearing a path.

(1/2)
>>
>>5914636

Finally clearing the market's bustle, the prince is brought into the Goron Chieftain's Hall. Hewn from the rock of the Mountain the hall has a rough feel to it, but the construction is sturdy enough that one feels safe under its roof. "Greetings Hylians and welcome to Goron City." The large and well-built, Chief Darman says, greeting Jinom warmly with a large toothy grin, a handshake, and a hug that if the Chieftain had put a little more strength into would have crushed bone. "Prince Jinom is that you? My how you've grown last time I saw you was when you were this tall." The Goron says gesturing to bellybutton height on himself.

"I remember Darman, father brought everyone here to enjoy the markets and thermal baths of your city."

At the prince's words Darman's smile shrinks into an apologetic look. "You have my condolences young prince, to think your father would be stuck down in his own castle. It's an outrage."

"Too true Darman it's why I've come here, to ask for your help in avenging this outrage."

"You'll have it my boy. Well some of it." He says sheepishly. "We've got Bokoblins moving into the eastern side of the mountain, encroaching on our new tunnels. Most of my warriors are out dealing with them so I'm afraid I can only offer a few fighters at the moment, but as soon as we've ground those swine into the rock, you'll have all the skull smashers I can spare."

> Accept Darman's troops and head to your next possible ally.

> Offer to help clear out the Bokoblins. It means you won't have time to visit as many people this season, but it would guarantee more Goron support should you succeed.

> Leave behind some of your escort to help the Gorons. It would leave you with less protection for your other visits but it would help Darman resolve his Bokoblin problem.

"Darman, now what kind friend would I be if I didn't offer to help?"

"Please Jinom, you have your own kingdom to look after. Don't weary yourself with our problems."

"We're friends aren't we Darman?"

"Yes?"

"That means your problems are my problems."

The Goron Chieftain breaks into a wide grin and lets out a belly deep laugh. "Ha, you're right should have known better. Leave it to a son of Bos to teach a Goron about friendship. Alright if you want to help, I won't stop you. LIGGS!" Darman shouts and a rather lanky, at least by Goron standards, Goron jogs into the room. "Lead Prince Jinom and his men here to our fighters in the eastern side of the mountain. They wish to help crush the Bokoblins causing trouble out there." Darman turns back to the prince placing his hand on Jinom's shoulder. "Now you be careful out there and come back safe you hear? And thanks for doing this."

"Like I said Darman we're friends, we help each other."

Darman's grin widens and he gives Jinom's shoulder a squeeze before releasing him. Jinom returns the Goron's infectious smile then departs to gather his troops for a Bokoblin hunt.

The expedition to the eastern side of the mountain takes a few days even with a guide and Jinom and his men are forced to leave their mounts behind as the tunnels and trails they are forced to take are narrow enough without trying to squeeze the beasts onto them as well. Liggs says he's taking the safest route, making Jinom wonder what the less safe route was. Nearing the last known location of Darman's warriors, Liggs stops and puts his ear to the ground.

"The stone trembles, our warriors must be fighting nearby. Either that or we're in for an eruption."

Trying not to imagine tons of cascading rocks and lava washing over them on the narrow trail, Jinom unsheathes his sword and orders his men to do the same. Coming around a bend in the trail, the prince can feel the ground shaking beneath his boots as well. Soon shouts and the clang of metal reaches his ears and he starts to increase his pace until, clearing one last turn in the trail he spots them. Darman's warriors are in an enclosed ravine amid a veritable sea of red Bokoblins. Each of the Goron warriors is an island in that sea of red, clad in thick metal armor and wielding massive iron clubs that they swing as easily as sticks, the Gorons stand their ground each swing of their club sending a Bokoblin flying. Despite this amazing display, it's obvious that the Goron's are in a tight spot. They are strung out and isolated, each Goron fighting his own battle and while they are strong and well protected, they are tiring and the Bokoblins are closing in tighter using every opening to try and bring down one of the Goron's.

> The Gorons are in trouble and need help now. Take your men and charge into the Bokoblins and attempt to relieve the besieged.

> Darman's warriors are tough and can handle the fight on the ground, what they need now is some ranged support take your men to the cliffs above the ravine and shoot the enemy with crossbows.

> It looks like the Gorons were ambushed, Bokoblins only pull off ambushes this good when led by a blue Bokoblin. Try to find and eliminate him to demoralize and confuse the Bokoblins.

Looks like we're charging into the fray. Your initial charge will be unexpected and will catch the Bokoblins off guard, so lucky you, the Bokoblins will be out of formation for your first strike. Also take note that you're not on horseback for this fight so some of your formations have changed as they really only work when mounted. Lastly due to the constraining nature of the ravine Maneuvers (or at least any the prince knows) will be unavailable during this fight.

Now without further ado, give me your dice

"To the Gorons men, our brothers in arms need our help. Charge!"

Jinom keeps his speech short this time. Not wanting to let the Bokoblins hear his pep talk. Leading the charge, Jinom with his knights, men-at-arms, and Sheikah bodyguards descend into the ravine. Few of the Bokoblins spot the attack and shout warnings, but the sea of red skinned monsters is too slow to react. With a battle cry of "HYRULE!" Shouted at the last moment the force of Hylians slams into the Bokoblins cutting through them like a ship through waves. The Bokoblins are forced to flee in a panic or die where they stand. Slicing down one Bokoblin then another Jinom reaches the first of the beleaguered Gorons. The Goron is blood spattered and breathing hard, but obviously relieved at the arrival of reinforcements.

>20 attacks at 18 damage a piece kills 30 Bokoblins. ??? Bokoblins remain.

"Are you the leader of this group?" Jinom asks.

"No, Darbus was at the front. He's somewhere further down this ravine." The Goron says pointing the deeper into the mass of the Bokoblins. As he does so, a dark blue figure rises above the ocean of red. It blows a horn and starts snorting, squealing, and chirping giving orders in strange Bokoblin speech. The fleeing Bokoblins stop and solidify once more turning to face the new threat.

"Hope you’re ready, Hylian because here they come." The Goron says hoisting his club and bracing himself for the coming fight.

"Knights forward! Do not fear their blades Advance through them" Jinom shouts stepping towards the massing Bokoblins.

The blue Bokoblin squeals and blows into his horn. The Bokoblins stomp their feet snorting and chirping in a rhythmic fashion akin to a battle chant. The stomping and noise making continues until at last one Bokoblin can't contain itself anymore and charges forward. Like the shattering of a dam, the red tide is released. Slavering and feral the Bokoblins meet the Hylians Armored Advance with a Frienzied Charge. The Bokoblins break themselves on the knights, the first Bokoblins who reach them are dispatched quickly and without mercy. The Bokoblins make no efforts to defend themselves, they just throw their bodies into the fray determined to strike a blow. Jinom brings his blade up and intercepts a leaping Bokoblin from the air. He attempts to pull his sword free but the blade sticks for a moment binding his arm. A Bokoblin wielding a pickaxe buries the weapon into his shield piercing it and locking down his shield arm. Another Bokoblin comes swinging a club that slams into the prince's side winding him while another blow strikes his arm numbing it. With a determined wrench, Jinom pulls his sword free and kills the Bokoblin with the pickaxe in a quick thrust. Similar scenes play out nearby as soldiers bogged down by the sheer weight of the Bokoblin's numbers are struck from every angle.

>26 damage a piece dealt by 21 men kills 45 Bokoblins.

>6 damage dealt by 40 engaged Bokoblins wounds your knights for 12 damage a piece the men-at-arms also suffer about 12 damage 3 of them fall.

>Roughly over half of the Bokoblin force remains. 17 of your men remain, +1 rescued Goron.

Jinom's attack has been met and now there is blood drawn on both sides.

Jinom sucks in a breath, against the wishes of his bruised ribs, and shouts “Lock Shields, don’t give them an inch. Show them that the men of Hyrule will not be moved!”

To Jinom’s right, Sir Nagos steps closer and brings his shield up and into contact with the prince’s. The man to Nagos’s right does similarly until the whole of the Hylian host is braced, shields up, and ready to weather the storm of the Bokoblin assault. The Bokoblin’s do not let up in their assault if anything they grow more Frienzied in their attack, throwing themselves heedlessly into the Hylians. The Bokoblins swarm over the Hylian formation, but shields raised, the Hylians hold their ground.

A particularly furious Bokoblin rams into Sir Nagos clinging to his shield hoping to rip it out of the way. It succeeds, using its full weight to drag the shield down exposing Nagos, but no Bokoblin is able to exploit the opening as with a quick thrust Jinom ends the life of the clinging Bokoblin and blocks a deadly swing from a Bokoblin club aimed at Nagos. Shrugging the dead Bokoblin off of his arm Nagos raises his shield again with a “Thank you sire.”

>13 damage dealt by 17+1 Goron troops kills 19 Bokoblins, your men suffer no damage this round

>56 Bokoblins remain.

The Bokoblins continue to swarm over Jinom’s men but over the shouts of men and swine. Jinom catches the sound of Goron voices, I must be getting closer to the trapped Gorons he thinks as another Bokoblin falls to his blade.

“Hold men! Hold!” Jinom shouts as another Bokoblin hammers at his shield with its club causing his shield arm to numb under the continuous assault. Sir Nagos thankfully spills the Bokoblin’s guts with a deft cut, alleviating the pressure on the prince. The blue Bokoblin blows a series of sharp blasts on his horn screeching animatedly, but his men take no heed of his orders and continue to attack the Hylians.

Suddenly there is a loud roar and a Bokoblin is sent flying over the heads of your men. Peeking up over his shield Jinom sees a towering Goron throw a terrifyingly powerful punch that mashes a Bokoblin into the dirt. It would appear that those you came to save no longer need saving.

>11 damage dealt by 17+1 Goron troops kills 17 Bokoblins, your men suffer no damage this round

> 15 damage dealt by 11 Goron troops kills 13 Bokoblins

>26 Bokoblins remain.

As if finally coming to their senses, the Bokoblins start to break apart. No longer hungering for blood, they seek to save their own and scatter. The blue Bokoblin blows his horn a few more times, but discards it in disgust before trying to run away with its fellows. There is nowhere to go though and together Jinom and the Goron’s slaughter the remaining Bokoblins as they try to force their way through, or desperately try to scrabble up the sides of the ravine. The blue is the final Bokoblin and as the large Goron corners him, he tires to ram his sword into his attacker, but the blade is deflected off of the thick metal plates armoring the Gorons belly. The Bokoblin is not given another chance to attack as with a clap of his mighty hands, the Goron crushes the Bokoblin’s skull like a melon between his hands.

The battle concluded the Goron turns to Jinom. “I didn’t expect there to be Hylians on this side of the mountain, much less warriors. Thanks for the help.” He says wiping bits of Bokoblin off of his hands. “What bring you here so far from your home?”

Jinom explains his deal with Darman and his purpose for coming to their rescue.

“Well, you certainly have good timing. I was starting to think that I was going to be the only one walking out of here.” The Goron says with a hearty laugh “The name’s Darbus and I’m the leader of our warriors.”

“Not to be rude, but it doesn’t look like you have many warriors left.” Jinom says glancing at the dozen or so Gorons still standing and at the half a dozen or so unmoving Goron bodies.

Darbus “Ha, this lot, this is just a patrol, I’ve got a bunch of groups like this scouring this side of the mountains for where the Bokoblin’s have made their camp. Usually its pretty easy, just follow the big column of smoke and the smell of roasting meat and you’ll find them. They’re being unusually sneaky this time.”

“You mean this group of Bokoblins wasn’t it.” The prince says incredulously “There’s easily over a hundred of them here.”

“Yup an there’s likely to be more at their camp. Although I’ll say that this group was pretty large. They must have really wanted me dead, though they’ll have to try harder than that if they want to bring down the mighty Darbus.” He shouts that last part out loud whether in boast or to frighten eavesdropping ears the prince is unsure. “Come I’ll take you to our base on this side of the mountain. We can tend to our wounded and talk safely there.”

The two groups head off together to the Goron’s base, a large cave dug into the side of the mountain. Big enough to easily hold hundreds of Gorons and the prince’s men as well. After seeing to the wounded Darbus takes Jinom to the back of the cave to a cordoned of section where he lays a marked-up piece of slate before the prince.

(2/3)
>>
>>5922536

“This is our map of this side of the mountain. We’ve searched all of the areas higher than our current position here he says jabbing a large finger at a position a quarter of the way down from the peak and found nothing. So, where ever the Bokoblin’s are they must be somewhere down here. We’ve searched most of the main paths and found no signs of their passage so they must be climbing up and down the cliffs, or using tunnels we don’t know about. We know that there’s a lot of them so where ever they are has to be big enough to hide them and a whole lot of supplies either that or they’ve got a fast way to bring in groups of Bokoblins from the low lands. I’ll leave it up to you how you want to use your warriors, but I’ll keep mine patrolling lower and lower until we’ve rooted out those swine.”

How does the prince aid the search?

> Investigate how the Bokoblins are moving around the mountain without using the main trails. Then you can follow one of their groups back to their base.

> Search for areas that would be large enough to contain a Bokoblin camp. It would be the fastest and most direct way to resolve the search.

> Help patrol with the Gorons, an extra pair of eyes couldn’t hurt and slow and methodical approach is most likely to see results here.

Seeking to discover how the Bokoblin’s are moving about and wishing to use that information to find their base. Jinom calls together the best scouts he has available, his Sheikah bodyguards. Explaining the situation to them, it is quickly decided to start the search at the site of the Bokoblin ambush and track the Bokoblins backwards from there.

“Since we killed them all, their tracks are likely still there.”

“Understood sire. We will find where your foes rest. Now if I may suggest something sire? You should get some rest, you look exhausted.”

“Thanks. I’ll be sure to tell mother that my bodyguards worried about my sleep as much as she does. Now go and don’t worry I’ll go to bed soon.”

> Base DC 40 (Unfamiliar Terrain)

> Give me three d100s

0 Passes = The scouts search high and low but find no sign of how the Bokoblins move about the mountain.
1 Passes = Several days of scouring the mountain reveals the likely location of the Bokoblin base, but not much else.
2 Passes = The Bokoblins are tracked back to their hideout after a day of searching, giving you enough information to plan an attack with.
3 Passes = The enemy base is sniffed out quickly by your scouts and they are able to infiltrate the enemy defenses giving you a wealth of information with which you can devise an assault.

The following day, despite Darbus's insistence that the prince share a rock roast with him, Jinom has a simple meal of rations with his men. "C'mon it'll put some gravel on your chest." Darbus coaxes taking a large bite of his definitely more rock than roast, rock roast. Jinom politely declines and is saved from further proding by the return of his scouts.

The Sheikah report that while some of the Bokoblins at the ambush site were carrying crude climbing tools. That is not how this group arrived. There were tracks, barely concealed that led to a "cave" just big enough to crawl through. Going through the cave deposited them further down the mountain where they encountered more tracks which they followed to another low cave. Repeating that process a few more times led them to a much larger cavern where they found the Bokoblin encampment.

The encampment itself was well defended with a palisade made out of boulders, manned by several lookouts. The Sheikah report that while they couldn't get much closer lest they be discovered, they did notice that besides the tunnel they crawled in through, there was a much larger opening on the other side of the encampment that, through a haze of smoke and heat appeared to lead outside. Working with Darbus and his map, the Bokoblin camp is pinpointed.

"Ah, so there using the open lava pits and gas vents here to hide their camp's presence. Clever little piglets." Darbus muses. "Well, we know where they are, there's just one problem only us Goron's will be able to use the main entrance. You Hylians won't be able to withstand the heat or noxious fumes down by the lava pits. Don't worry though now that we've found them, we Goron's should be able to handle it from here." Darbus says with a proud smile. "The only thing we'd need you for is to watch the other exit and kill any rats that flee our slaughter."

"I could take my men through the cave my scouts used and attack from the other side, make it a two-pronged assault." Jinom says

"Sure, and I wouldn't turn down the help, but if things go bad on your side my warriors won't be able to help."

Jinom nods thoughtfully "What about a siege? If we block off their entrances and exits, we wouldn't even need to fight them just starve them out, or collapse their passages totally and leave them to die in the dark."

"That could work, but it would take some more scouting we'd need to make sure to find and block off all their ways out, then stick around to make sure none of them dig their way out. We could handle that on our own, but we'd be a little late coming to help you in your war."

Mulling things over carefully the prince decides to...

>Make a two-pronged assault on the Bokoblin camp. It would help split the defenders and take some of the heat off of Darbus's Gorons.

>Leave the assault to the Goron's and just have your men cover the exits. The Goron's will likely suffer more casualties, but you and your men would be safe.

>Block the exits and starve the Bokoblins. After a little more up-front scouting from your Sheikah, you could leave the rest to the Goron's although it would delay their aid to you.

Aren't there explosives in this setting?

Yes there are, it's an open secret among the Gorons but the knowledge and presence of such materials beyond the Goron's home is very limited. Jinom would know of the Goron's explosives as would any Hylian who works closely with the Gorons. You could convince/ask the Goron's to make use of such materials if you so wish.

Interesting, maybe the sheikah are sneaky enough to plant bombs to collapse on top of the bokoblins.

Alright folks I'm going to let this vote ride for another day and probably make this vote our second to last one for the thread. We are approaching the end of the board and I don't want to start combat or our next diplomatic visit until our next thread.

"I will lead my men to the tunnel entrance and assault the Bokoblin base from there while you and your troops attack from the cave mouth. A two-pronged assault will split their forces and make it easier for both of us to break in."

"Alright if that's how you want to do it, I have no objections. I will call in all of my patrols we'll make a concentrated attack once I have all of my warriors." Darbus says adjourning the planning session. Over the next few days Darbus's forces increase tenfold as more and more patrols return. Jinom's men take the opportunity to rest and lick their wounds from the previous battle, preparing for the coming fight.

Jinom and Darbus lock down the last details, as the day of the attack approaches.

How will you execute this attack?

>Darbus's men will attack first, drawing most of the attention and giving your men the element of surprise. (You will face fewer Bokoblins on your side and depending upon the alertness of the Bokoblins will result in them being *BROKEN* for the first few rounds of combat.)

>Jinom's men will attack first diverting the Bokoblins away from the main effort. (Darbus will face fewer Bokoblins on his side and depending upon the alertness of the Bokoblins will result in them being *BROKEN* for the first few rounds of combat.)

>A simultaneous attack will be made to split the Bokoblins two ways. (Equal force distribution at the start of combat. Both sides of the attack will have a chance to catch the Bokoblins off guard and leave them *BROKEN* at the start of combat.)

Let's be practical here. We're weakened as a nation and a fighting force, and we have other realms to visit.

Seems like the reasonable option - the Gorons are a lot stronger than our forces.
