File: OPERATION ERIKA.jpg (148 KB, 1384x1125)

April 5th, 1940
You're sitting in a grey, dingy box with one of your fellow NKVD officers, Dmitri Nicolschi.
He asks you if you're informed on the mission.
"Of course, Comrade Dmitiri," you assure him.
You run over the plan in your head.
You'll be driven through Romania, taken to a remote location in northern Yugoslavia, and flown north in a small fighter plane to be paradropped into Magdeburg, only a few miles West of Berlin.

Dmitri slams a dossier on the table, labeled OPERATION: ERIKA . You open it up, showing pictures of the location. It describes a parade that will be held there, and briefs you on your mission to assassinate Adolf Hitler.
Stalin will have your head on a pike firmly planted in the coldest part of Siberia if you fail this mission.
Pavel speaks again, in his thick accent, firmly reminiscent of the Motherland,
> "You take gun. Choose."
An unnamed officer walks in and places three firearms on the table in front of you.

One, a suppressed bolt-action sniper that fires a .223 round.
Another, a silenced TT-33 Tokarev, modified to have to be manually racked each shot. It's virtually silent.
The third, a dart gun that fires a small cyanide-loaded dart

Which will you choose before you begin your mission?

> The sniper. Long-range is clearly the best option for this mission.
> The Tokarev. I want to see the look on the Fuhrer's face as he keels over and dies.
> The dart gun. Leave no evidence of assassination, perhaps they will rule it as a natural death.

Going to sleep after this entry, and won't be available tomorrow until late at night. Thanks for playing so far, anons, I have some ideas to continue this story I think you'll all really enjoy.

3 votes Tokarev, 1 vote sniper.

"The Tokarev." you say to Dmitri. "I want to see the look on the Fuhrer's face as he keels over and dies."

Dmitri, a portly man with a shaved head, gives a hearty laugh and takes a long drag from his cigar.
"You have balls, Comrade Anon, I will give you this. Now, other part of plan. How we help you after killing is done? You cannot expect to shoot Fuhrer and simply walk away. We have option for you."

> Have NKVD officers with PPD-40's shoot up the place indiscriminately, civilians and all.
> Create a distraction by planting bombs in a building visible from the parade to shower the parade in terror and shrapnel.
> Cover the parade in a thick smoke to try to make an escape.

"Cover the parade in a thick smoke after I take him out. That way, I can make my escape."

Dmitri, still holding that lit stogie of his, gives you a solemn look, and says
"дa. We can arrange this."
"We will be giving you a fake ID to use at the border of Yugoslavia and Romania. Your name is Aleksandar Petrovic."
He throws the ID onto the table in front of you, which you put into your jacket pocket.
"You are here on business to meet with a trade partner. You work in the oil business. Understand?"
"One more thing before you go. It is vital that you remember this. The parade is on April 9th. If you arrive any later, we will have wasted our final opportunity to execute Hitler. Good luck."

You nod your head and prepare to leave the NKVD office.
As you get into the Moskvitch-400 car that your fellow officers have prepared for you, you sit down in the back seat, and quietly puff on a cigarette.
You leave Moscow behind. An hour goes by. Then two. Then four. Six, ten, and suddenly you're asleep.

Your driver awakens you by tapping your thigh, and he tells you that you are about a minute from the checkpoint. You've arrived at the city of Izmail, near the border of Romania & the Motherland.
Opening your eyes and doing your best to look professional, the driver takes out his fake ID, as do you.
As you drive up to checkpoint, the spring trees growing above you, and the smell of a bustling city enveloping you, the guard mumbles something in Romanian, and the driver helpfully obliges.
Reaching his hand out to the back seat, he gestures to take the ID from you.
You place it in his gloved hand, to which he presents to the guard, and thankfully, you aren't questioned further. You go through the checkpoint.
Stopping to go get food at a local diner and gas station, you're served some coffee and bread.
It's been a day since you set out. It's now 2:43PM, April 6th, 1940. Three days left to get to Magdeburg.

Continuing in the car for another 5 hours, you're about halfway through the country, when you come to a stop in a remote area in the small town of Sfântu Gheorghe.
You stop at what looks to be an abandoned house, graffiti'd with Nazi slogans and symbols, and a wide manner of other things. Political sayings, art, or just someone's name. The wooden roof is peeling. The bricks look uneven and the mortar is failing in some spots.
The driver informs you that some NKVD officers want to have a word with you here.

Begrudgingly, you walk into the ramshackle house, as the dust unsettled for what seems like decades fills your sinuses.
In front of you is 3 men. They don't introduce themselves. One is lithe, slender, and relatively short, another looks extremely muscular, a guard most likely; and the third, tall, and appears to be quite malnourished.
The guard extends his hand out towards an empty chair, and you sit down.
The short, slender man speaks first.

"New intel has come in, and we are now aware of a power vacuum that would open up when the Fuhrer is assassinated."
"There are 3 possible candidates who could replace him, so we've arranged something, very hastily."
"We have a man on the inside of the Nazi Administration. He can pull the strings to have one of these 3 show at the parade."
He throws a dossier on the table. Inside are the descriptions of the 3 men.
"Heinrich Himmler, Hermann Göring, and Joseph Goebbels."
"Which do you want to take out first? The others will be on no doubt high alert after this event. It's important to strike for the heart and cause maximum damage to their ranks."

> Himmler. He's the leader of the SS, and the most militarily capable. With both the Fuhrer, and him gone, it'll be trivial to roll over the Reich with the Red Army.
> Göring. He founded the Gestapo, and has some military capability in the Luftwaffe, and exposing and toppling the German operative department would be immensely useful to destabilizing the country. Not a single Soviet soldier will have to die in the front lines if we cause the country to topple from the inside.
> Goebbels. He's the head of propaganda for the Reich, and thus a very popular figurehead. If left unchecked, he could unite a new Germany to take revenge on the Motherland for assassinating their dear Fuhrer-- and an angry Germany is a powerful Germany.

>Himmler. He's the leader of the SS, and the most militarily capable. With both the Fuhrer, and him gone, it'll be trivial to roll over the Reich with the Red Army.

IIRC, Goring was a weird dude obsessed with his own grandeur, and not very well liked. Goebbels was pretty well liked publicly but I think was derided inside Hitler’s administration for thinking he was way more important than he was.

Himmler was most competent out of the three and therefore he has to go!

The SS will bend to our actual army and the Goring is a detriment to the Luftwaffe so I say we deal with the propagandist and let the population be divided by greedy commanders.

"This is a good offer you have given me. 2 for 1! Less to find after we're done with the Fuhrer," you say to the 3 men in front of you.
"Alright. Have Himmler show up at the parade. He's the leader of the SS, and one of Hitler's top generals. With both of them gone, the glorious Red Army can show up and trample the Reich!"
One of the men laughs and speaks up.
"Great Leader Stalin will see to it that you are awarded for this. Good luck out there, comrade."

Without another word, you nod to the men and leave the building, clutching the dossier in your hand.
You open it up once more to remember what he looks like. Buzzed head. Stubbly moustache. Glasses.
You repeat the picture of his face in your head, and walk back to your car.
There, the driver is fast asleep. It is quite late. You wake him up and ask him to drive to a more remote location to sleep for the night.
He obliges. The two of you silently roll into a small, hopefully abandoned driveway, and turn off the engine.
You lay down on the backseat, and close your eyes.

April 7th, 10:24 AM. Two days left to get to Magdeburg.
The beeping of your wristwatch awakened you as your driver is still fast asleep in the front seat. You poke at the driver, and he wakes up with a jolt.
"Oh. Sorry, Comrade."
With a hasty grab at his keys, he starts the engine, and pulls out of the driveway.
"It'll be about 4 hours to the border of Yugoslavia. How much time do we have left?"
"It's 10:27 AM right now. We can make it to the fighter plane location in a day and a half if you really hurry it up."
"Of course, Comrade Anon. Do you still have your ID? Or, should I say, Aleksandar Petrovic?"
You flash it to him, and he gives an approving look in the rearview mirror.

As you watch the landscape pass you by, clutching your suppressed TT-33 in the pocket of your overcoat, you ready yourself for the encounter at the Yugoslavian border. There will be much more security there. You take a glance at your ID. Aleksandar. Petrovic. Aleksandar. Petrovic.
This repeating method works for you. You're not sure why.
You shut your eyes, and rest your head on the window.

April 7th, 4:52 PM.

You're jostled awake by the slam on the brakes. You've made it to the border.
Above you, a flagpole towers above with the Yugoslavian and Romanian flags on it, with troops from both countries standing at attention on either side.
You're on the border with Golubac, a city in modern-day Serbia.
They scream at you in Serbian, two holding guns at your car, and the driver, being fluent in many languages; an NKVD officer specialized in linguistics, calmly complies with their demands. As they converse, the driver once again reaches towards you, ushering you to present your ID.
He speaks to you in Russian.
"They want to know your name."
As you bow your head to them, and as the soldiers read over both of your ID, you calmly state yourself as Aleksandar Petrovic.

Thank God, you think to yourself.
After a quick search of the car, the gate opens, and you're allowed into the city of Golubac, Yugoslavia.

"We've got time to spare. The fighter plane poised to paradrop you into Germany isn't going to arrive until tomorrow afternoon."
The driver cheerily continues, "That means we can tour the city, get something substantial to eat. What do you want to do first, Comrade?"

> Go to a bar and drink our worries away. If we are to be captured by the Fascist menace, we should raise our glasses high, if for the final time.
> Go to a restaurant and get some food in our guts. No more stops, we have to make it to Magdeburg.
> I appreciate the excitement, Comrade, but we need to continue driving if we are to make it. I hear Gestapo lurks these streets. We can't risk the mission.

"Let's go to a restaurant around town and get some food. We can't stop anymore, we have to make it to Magdeburg on time."
"Sure," the driver says wistfully, scanning the streets for a diner.
Eventually, he finds a place simply labeled "Milan's Kafana".

As the driver parks outside and walks with you through the doors, your senses are bombarded with the smell of delicious warm food. You don't know what it is yet, so you ask your driver to be your translator.
"Ask them for the menu."
He goes up to a waiter and politely says something in Serbian. She nods her head and leaves for a moment, and returns with a small piece of paper.
The driver smiles at the paper and says
"I've been to this part of Yugoslavia before. They have a combination of beans and stew, called prebranac and paprikaš. You have a few dinar, right?"
As you sit down to eat and finish up, placing the money on the table, you feel refreshed.

You glance down at your watch.

April 7th, 9:46 PM.

What do you guys think of the quest so far? I got some experience writing for The Enforcers one I did previously. I think I've gotten better at it. Or, at least, I hope. I've been taking the realism aspect very seriously; I even pulled up google maps to see how long it takes to get from Moscow to the border of Romania, and I only use real-life cities. The Moskvitch-400 car you drive in was a real car in the year 1940. Anyways, here's the rest of the update. New tripcode, btw.
>>5839705

"Shit, it's dark out. We must go now. The cover of night will aid us in our journey, at least."
The driver nods in agreement and gets up to leave.
As you walk out of the restaurant, you hear laughing to your left, followed by a joke in German.
You look over at them. There's only two officers. One is lighting up a cigarette. The other is leaning against the storefront.
Your heart drops into your stomach and time slows down.
Gestapo.
You'll have to cross their path to get to your car.
What do you do?

Unfortunately I write long paragraphs with intimate lore so it's not really a pick-up and play quest. I get that the way I make mine will always attract less people in general but I always appreciate the ones who take the time to invest themselves in my silly little stories :))

Do you anons mind if I make a new thread for the next update? It'll take a while for me to draw something new, but we're permasaged and it looks like it's slowing down because of that.
>>
>>5842367
Don't. Threads last over a month on qst, if you make a new thread every time you hit page 2, you'll run out of the five threads you can make on the board fast.

Generally, Threads are used until they hit page 10. You will get backlash and people bitching at you if you jump to a new thread so early. It happens all the time with new QMs who don't let grasp the etiquette of the board.

Fuck. There are threads 45 days old in the catalogue and they're still being used because they haven't hit page 11 yet. You only have to worry when a bunch of new quests or new threads pop up, since that can shift you from safe page 9 to risky middle of page 10. Just check the catalogue and short by bump order to keep track of where your thread is when you hit page 10, and you'll be gucci to ride this one for a month or more.

What page you are on doesn't matter, cause Anons will be sorting by last reply instead of bump order or creation date, so as long as you shill on /qst/ and update regularly, More anons will trickle in
>>
>>5842367
And I can guarantee the slow down isn't because you're on thread 2. Its probably because anons thought you flaked when you posted half an update without explaining the rest was going to come later. Anons are quick to assume unestablished quests will die with a whimper

You should really shill your quest in /qtg/ if you're worried about replies, at least to let anyone who thinks you flaked a few days ago that you're still running, and to increase your audience. You probably should've linked it when you started, but better late than never and it will give your quest a bit more gas.
>>
>>5842372
>>5842385
Insightful. Thank you, I'll do that. I don't know where to shill though. Still kind of new here

Stepping out into the frigid night, the stars gently gleam above you, as small beacons of light in this dreary city. You stare down at the ground, taking deep breaths. You feel the warmth of calm fill your body. Your boots clack on the damaged sidewalk. Every step you take feels a mile long.

One of the officers call out to you. The driver puts his hand on your shoulder and stops dead, turning to look at the men. He says something to you in German, and your driver hesitantly replies. The officers give a small laugh. After rummaging around in his jacket pocket, one offers you a cigarette. Reluctantly, you take it from him, and put it in your pocket for later.

The driver continues talking and points at something in the distance, and that seems to settle the officer's curiosity. After a mutual waving goodbye, they face each other to continue talking. You start walking away. Before you leave though, one of the officers, after taking a long drag from the cigarette in his hand, shoots you a look that could burn a hole through your skull.

Your blood runs cold. Your head pounds with dread. You attempt to shake it from your mind. You must remain calm until you reach the car. After another deep breath, you continue casually walking, keeping your cool, despite your urge to pull out your TT-33 and blow a hole right between that bastard's eyes.

As you get back to your car and shut the door behind you, and prepare to leave, the driver, shifting nervously in his seat says to you;
"Comrade Anon, I have distressing news. Our communications to the Motherland have been deciphered by the enemy. We don't know how much they're privy to, but what we do know is that they have an inkling that something is awry. Luckily for us, we use a lot of code words in our communications. We must execute the plan swiftly and without hesitation before they crack it, do you understand?"

You assure him that the plan will not fail. It can't. You shudder to imagine what will happen to you-- to your family, if you do not succeed. You and your driver pull into a driveway, and lay down in the seats to go to sleep.

April 8th, 11:24AM

You rouse your driver awake. Rubbing the sleep from his eyes, he pulls out a cigarette and lights it up. Once he's done, he informs you it'll be about 2 hours to the forest. You nod, and prepare for the ride.

Driving steadily along, and stopping for gas on the way, you eventually leave the city and watch as the exit sign passes you by.
Finally. The driver takes a turn, and suddenly, the road turns from asphalt, to stone, to dirt, to grass. In front of you, a dense forest approaches.

As you enter the labyrinth of trees, you feel like you can sense every bump and rock the car hits as it slows along the tumultuous path. You can hear nothing but the sound of the engine, and you open the window to get a scent of forest, but you're assaulted with the stench of leaded gasoline.

Quickly rolling the window back down, and after you catch your breath from the coughing, the smell hangs in the air stagnant.
Continuing down the forest with all its sights and sounds, the spring just beginning, showing trees with thick foliage and the forest floor laden with lush grass and budding flowers.
Suddenly, you come to an open clearing. There's a parked van and one man wearing an all-black suit. The driver looks back at you and speaks up once more.

"This is our final stop, Comrade Anon."

"Driver, I never got your name. You have been a very good companion to me thus far."

"Ah, of course, Comrade. It's Nikolai Zhuravleva. And you?"

You tell him your name is Anonovich Forchanisky.

"Such a beautiful name. Good luck on your travels, for this is where we part ways. May Great Leader Stalin and the spirit of the Motherland guide your every step."

As you step out of the car, and head towards the man, standing idly by the door of the all-black van, hands firmly placed behind his back, you shake his hand. You look down at your watch.

April 8th, 3:25PM

Stepping into the truck, and shutting the door behind you, the man follows suit. He does not attempt small talk, or any attempt to introduce himself. Comrade Nikolai was much kinder to me, you think to yourself.

About 15 minutes in, you're violently jerked back and forth as the van starts to spin out!
You feel the whole world around you begin to tumble, and you're flipped over, landing with a loud CRASH as the van stops on its side. You were thrust forward and you hit your head on the seat in front of you. The pain is searing, but not nearly as bad as the skull-splitting headache you get once it subsides.
You unbuckle your seatbelt. The van is sideways.
Getting out, and approaching the front seat to look in, you nearly gag.
The man, bloody, his eyes glazed over and his face filled glass shards, is dead. One of the tires is completely shot, and the engine is making strange noises.
After some hesitation, you go through his pockets, the glovebox, and scavenge the rest of the van for anything useful.
You find a few dinar, a compass, and a map marked with the location of the fighter plane. Perfect.

You look down at your watch.

April 8th, 3:40PM. 5 hours and 20 minutes left to get to the plane.

What do you do from here?

I choose not to include rolls because randomness makes it harder to write for a story that's already alt history, one of the hardest genres to write for. If you want to criticize the quest, fine, but be constructive.
