You are April Bythewood, farmer and homesteader in the town that gave you your name. A few weeks ago you appeared, naked and freezing to death in the fountain at the center of town, with as few memories as clothes. Donna, the local doctor, took you in, and with the aid of some high priced healing potions brought you back from the brink of death. Unfortunately those potions were technically the assets of the local baroness, who has every intention of extracting that lost wealth from you, one way or another.

To get you out of that sticky situation the town’s mayor offered you up the abandoned Henderson homestead in the wooded hills near town, formally inducting you as a member of the town. While this hasn’t cleared your debt, it has pushed it off into your yearly taxes, giving you considerable breathing room. You find yourself now on the morning of your fourth day, preparing to harvest your first crop of a quick growing edible stalk known as thrift shoots, when the sounds of heavy footsteps come up behind you.

You turn and find a peculiar sight. At first glance she’s a young woman, scarcely out of her teen years. Then you notice the stitches that cross her face, marking a clear line where her complexion changes slightly and her eye color shifts dramatically from blue to green. More stitches and patchwork skin cover her arms as well. She pauses, a smirk crossing her face, revealing several concerningly sharp teeth, before setting a crate on the ground.

“Bit much ain't it? You April?”

>Are you...a zombie?

Words and thoughts crashed into each other, then piled up in a heap in your head. "Umm, yes, I...are you a zombie?"

She shrugs and takes a moment to tighten the black choker around her neck, a bit of red filling her pale two toned face at two different speeds. "Ah, not according to the doc." She grimaces. "Better reaction than screaming abomination I guess.”

A twist of guilt settles in your stomach. "Sorry."

Your peculiar guest just shrugs again. "Ah, I've had worse. Sarah’s the name, got your seeds here.” She nudges the crate with her foot and looks around. “Henderson place hasn’t changed much has it?”

You shrug back. “I wouldn’t really know, I guess.”

There’s an awkward pause between the two of you, broken by Sarah.

“Ah hell, you’re just as much of an odd duck as I am, sorry. You’d think I’d be used to this sort of thing by now.” She gives her left hand a nervous twist, a full circle in fact and laughs. “Alright, enough stupid talk from me, how’s your field doing? I’m the town runner so if you’ve got anything coming in for the harvest I’ll drop by to pick it up for you, if you’re selling it that is.”

You let out a little nervous laughter yourself. “I’ve got a few thrift shoots coming in, but I’m not sure if I’m going to sell them or not.”

“Ah, well let’s see them then. I’ve got a pretty good eye for crops at this point, when I remember to bring it anyway.” You stumble midstep and Sarah roars with laughter. “Sorry, mom always says I should get my laughs where I can. Course she is a terrifying witch so...probably not the best person for advice eh?”

You grin, not quite sure whether you should be laughing or not. “Is Madam Olga...your mother?” The two of your circle the house toward the field.
>>
“Close as I’ll get I figure. Ah, that’s a nice field of shoots! How’d you get them grown this fast? Mable’s still got a day on hers, and she started a day before you.” She kneels at the edge of the field, digging her hands into the soil. “Bit of magic in the soil, your doing?”

“I...don’t think so?” You shrug. “I just dug up the dirt and planted the seeds. Gave them a bit of water.”

“Hmm...all used up now, but might be a little boost left in the rest of the field. Maybe a parting gift from Henderson?” Sarah stands and tightens her collar again. “Eh, let me give you a hand with the harvest, then we’ll decide what to do with them.”

The two of you set to work, moving through the field from opposite ends. The shoots come out of the ground with a pleasant ‘pop’, trailing thin white roots and you work your way down each row leaving them in bundles as you go.

Sarah grins from across the field. “Alright, go on and ask me what having Madam Olga for a mom is like.”

“I’m still wondering if you actually have a spare set of eyes.”

Sarah giggles. “Just a joke. I’m a little easier to fix than most, but I’ve just got the one body.”

“Ok, what is it like then? She’s a bit...”

“Nuttier than a squirrel? Crazy? One bad day from raising the town graveyard and going on a rampage?”

“Intense?”

“Yeah, intense. She’s a little intense, but hey, most moms are. Hard to get a date though when your mom has an actual evil eye.”

You giggle. “Yeah, I bet she’s a little hard on them.”

“Ugh, like you wouldn’t believe. She tried to get the last one to agree to a blood pact!” The two of you finish up the harvest and gather the thin shoots up into a sizable heap. “Pretty good portion here! Shoots aren’t worth much, shop will give you three silver for the batch, but money’s money I say. You keeping them for food or selling them?”

“I should probably keep them, even if I’m going to be sick of them in a few days.”

Sarah sticks out her tongue for a moment. “Can’t stand them myself. Welp, I should probably head out then.” Sarah waves goodbye to you. “Alright, I’ll drop by every five days or so and see what you’ve got grown or growing. Drop by the store sometime and say hi alright? Us strange girls have to stick together you know.”

You watch Sarah go for a moment then turn back to your farm. You’ve made your first harvest! The bushel of thrift shoots will keep you fed for the next several days, incidentally about as long as the shoots would last before rotting. You’re still a long way from getting the whole farm going, but it’s progress! You’ve got bags of seeds, an empty field and the rest of your day ahead of you. Now how to spend it?

You get to work clearing out the next mess of weeds in your field, hacking them down with a machete, then taking a hoe and shovel to the roots. That initial task doesn’t take you too long so you clamber up on one of the many heaps of broken masonry that inhabit your field and try to get a feel for where your efforts would best go next. The view is more than a little disheartening though. Heaps of stone and broken archways surround your little island of cleared field, and beyond those are thickets of rampant rose bushes, several pine trees and a few withered stumps.

You grab a few more tools from the shed regardless, intent on moving at least some of the ruined stonework out of your way. The large slabs prove massively difficult to move though, you manage to flip one over with your shovel levered under it, only to reveal another like it beneath. An old pickaxe in the shed cracks on the first swing and shatters on the second and you give up on the ruins for the moment. You’re going to need an edge of some sort to get past them.

You turn your attention to the rose bushes next. They prove easier to work with, though you fail to completely remove your target, reducing it to a central barb covered trunk in exchange for a net of fresh cuts across both arms. Still, you should be able to finish it off the next time you work on the field, and have enough time to clear the first patch of weeds behind it.

I finally catch up and I like it. I say maybe foraging and fishing is good enough, we have the soup filler, some shrooms and fish could be enough. And when we get back if we have time we can plant something

You look out at your freshly cleared field, open and ready for seeds. Sweat is still dropping off your face from your previous labor, the mangled but still standing rose bush mocking you. You could spend the rest of the day putting seeds in the ground, setting the stage for future crops...or you could spend the hottest part of the day in the cool shade of the forest with a fishing rod.

It’s really not a hard decision. You switch out your hoe and shovel for a basket and fishing rod and head out into the woods. A cool breeze and pleasant shade greet you and before long you’re passing through the berry glade. You inspect the bushes and find the strawberry bushes in full bloom, you’ll need to keep a close eye on it if you want to beat the local wildlife to the strawberries. Three to five days you’d guess.

Passing into the clearing around the forest pond you find a few edible mushrooms, but the rarer specimens haven’t regrown yet. You settle in next to the pond and take in the fishing spots. A small stream empties into the pond over a few rocks at the far end, and there’s a patch of promising looking cattails as well. Then there’s the dead center of the pond, probably a difficult spot like last time. You also remember scattering some of the fluffy plants at the edge of the pond into the water and stirring up the fish, maybe that could help?

6 Fishing Attempts Available. Roll a D100 with each attempt!
3 Seed Pods Available. Each cast can also use a Seed Pod if available. Effect : ???

> Near the cattails (Difficulty: Low? Size: Small?)
> Near the rocks (Difficulty: Average? Size: Medium?)
> In the center of the pond (Difficulty: High? Size: Big?)

> Use a seed pod
> Don’t use a seed pod

Technical Instructions: This isn’t a democratic vote, just pick and roll! Pick a location, if you’ll use a seed pod, and roll a D100. Each location has a die range where if your roll lands in it you get a fish!

I say we can maximize the seed pod if we make some fishing basket or buy a net, shake the seed pod and catch all those fish in a swoop
