It is the year 0077 of the Universal Century. A half century has passed since the earth began moving its burgeoning population into gigantic orbiting space colonies. A new home for mankind, where people are born and raised… and die.

“We are the people of the universe. We have struggled to survive in a harsh environment, and new generations of colonists testify to our success. Now, when we gaze back at Earth, we see a sacred blue and green orb- the cradle of civilization and a sacred home that we must eternally preserve and protect . . .”
-Zeon Zum Deikun, UC 0058

—------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

21:00, 20th February UC 0077
Zeon Military Academy on Guardian Banchi, Side Three (Republic of Zeon)

A sharp hiss fills the interior of the simulator pod as its primary hatch unseals, motors whirring as it slides off to your right and out of sight. As it vanishes into the wall, bright light floods the interior of the pod, and you raise a hand momentarily to shield your eyes - the pod’s screens and readouts are anything but dim, but the overhead lighting of the warehouse they’re being kept in is downright blinding in comparison. Blinking, you clear your vision and reach out to the edge of the open hatch with a gloved hand, pulling yourself from the pod with practiced ease and landing feet first on the ground after a short drop.

Across the length of the warehouse the other cadets are doing the same, helmets peeking out of all but one of their deactivating simulator pods as each starts to clamber out. Casval is, once again, not wearing a normal suit. Typical, no point even arguing with your brother over it at this point.

“Felix!” The almost taunting voice of a young woman calls out from the pod opposite of your own, a mischievous smile visible beyond her slightly tinted visor, “I think you’re getting worse - What was that flying? I thought your pod broke.”

You give Vivima a small shrug in response, “No, I could just see your shots way off, you’re still projecting intentions. Might as well call them out over comms.”

Viv rolls her eyes and laughs, her voice far clearer and more resonant than it has any right to be - a voice like hers really is squandered on a Zabi, “Mmm, maybe I will, that could be fun. If just thinking about them has you spinning around like a top, imagine how you’d move if I just told you. Oh, I do like that.”
>>
Quickly you shoot back a response, “Calling out attacks? Great, now you just need a mask and you’re halfway to being a cartoon villain. Glemy will be ecstatic. …You weren’t actually doing that on purpose though, were you?”

The thought of Vivima mentally feinting is unsettling. Newtype awareness isn’t so easily tricked… right? It must be a joke.

“A mask?” Casval interrupts your friendly bickering with Viv, “Now that’s an interesting idea. That was excellent flying from both of you.”

“Thanks, not so bad your-” You speak in eerie unison with Viv, stopping cold halfway through and turning to look at the violet eyed Zabi. Her lips are pursed, barely suppressing a snicker.

“Casval, could you give us a moment?” Vivima asks, recovering from the flustering moment faster than you manage.

“...Of course. I’ll handle the debriefing.” Your brother agrees after a moment, his intense gaze meeting your own for a moment. Even without sensing his thoughts you know exactly what’s on his mind. The plan is never far from his thoughts. “Take your time.”

Your brother turns away and heads back over to the other cadets who are speaking among themselves already, rounding them up with a shout and a wave; Tiff, Zena, Artesia, and all the others fall in behind him quickly as they head off to the briefing room to go over the simulation results.

“I have news from my sister.” Vivima explains once the others are well out of earshot, “She’s agreed to your request.”

“About the children at the Flanagan institute?”

“They’re being sent home.”

“Just like that?” You raise an eyebrow in surprise, a wave of relief washing over you. That’s great news, but it feels rather sudden. Kycilia never lets go of potential power once she gets her claws in something.

“Think what you will of her, but Kycilia isn’t a monster. She’s… prone to certain mistakes, but everyone is.” Vivima crosses her arms, frowning a little as she speaks about the unpleasant subject, “You asked for my help with the kids and so I got it done. Tryph helped. We just had to make it clear that they weren’t contributing significantly to research, and after that it wasn’t too hard to get them sent back.”

“It can’t be that simple. They saw and heard too much to just be sent-”
>>
>>5733888

“It’s a very convoluted process, don’t worry yourself with the details. The Kycilia agency handles stranger cover ups all the time, the important thing is that they’ll be back with their families and we can focus on more productive research.” Viv replies all too casually, the implication of even worse transgressions occurring regularly sending a chill down your spine. “...You’re not happy?”

“No, I’m glad. Very glad.” You shake your head, forcing a smile that slowly turns genuine, “And still confused.”

“Oh, good, because for a second there you were giving me a look like I’d shot Zammy… You really have no idea how Kycilia thinks, do you?” Viv almost laughs, a hint of concern crossing her visored face.

“Clearly not.” You furrow your brow in thought, not even bothering to hide your feelings, “I’m just glad those kids got sent home. Just the ones with families?”

Viv nods in confirmation, finally removing her helmet and pulling her slightly beyond regulation length hair loose out of its bun, “Yes, the orphans are staying at the institute. They’re being well taken care of. I wanted to speak about something else as well though.”

“And what’s that?” You ask, “Trying to drag me back into working on mobile suits again?”

“Always, but no.” She motions to the pods and then vaguely in the direction of the briefing room, “I was wondering about all of this.”

“Sneaking in mobile suit training hours?” You ask innocently enough, but she isn’t buying it. Of course she isn’t buying it.

Felix.” She replies with mild exasperation, sounding far too much like Artesia for a moment; thoughts of Viv as something more like a sibling rather than strange step-family just sneak in occasionally, “I’m no fool. We’ve been running these sims for months and I have a working pair of eyes. …I’m curious, that’s all. There’s nothing wrong with keeping a project to yourself, if it’s not ready yet I’ll just keep flying and let you work. I haven’t said anything until now because I thought you could use some space and I was busy.”

>“Oh, so you’re just allowing me to have this? How magnanimous of you.” It might sound a bit biting, but Viv’s no stranger to ‘friendly’ prodding like this.
>”Just scouting out officers for the mobile suit corps. I’m surprised you haven’t been bringing in your own people too.”
>”I’m tinkering with some ideas about how to restructure mobile suit training, and trying to scout and train newtypes to help with it. It’s still early, if I need help I’ll ask.” That’s more or less the truth.

So she already knew. Not completely unexpected, the Zabis control most everything.

Anyway, good to see you return Contolist!

I'd hold back a little on 'own people'. Rather than saying we're trying to build our own inner circle. It is pretty much the truth on the newtype corp but she doesnt need to know we're building it around *us*.

Glad to see you back contolist. You've been missed.

I've got some of it written currently but it's nowhere near complete, and I'm not happy with the quality of what I already have. If inspiration hits I might finish it at some point. For story purposes, the gist of what happened is that there was a failed pro-neutrality military coup in Riah. It was discovered before it was ready to go and most of the conspirators were arrested without major incident, but a few units resisted and went rogue. They captured some politicians, important industrialists, and a big pile of civilians in the equivalent of one of Riah's national parks; it was a giant mess. This of poorly thought out plan of course failed spectacularly and amounted to little more than a flashy terrorist attack, they never stood a real chance after the rest of the coup was foiled. Ramba and a handful of Riah's mobile suit pilots (with recently loaned Zakus) crushed the rogue military units. A bunch of old guntanks and other obsolescent vehicles got destroyed, the Zakus did very well and only suffered minor losses.

“Just scouting out officers for the mobile suit corps.” You explain, having expected the line of questioning or something like it for quite some time now, “We have the best of the best all around us here, and as we get closer to being commissioned every commander that hasn’t been banished to a remote asteroid outpost is going to be in a race to snatch up as many of us as they can.”

“Jumping the line on headhunting? Thought so. That’s very you. It’s also against regulations, but I know Dozle doesn't mind.” Vivima’s violet eyes remain narrowed even as she responds approvingly, “A few of them are even shaping into real pilots.”

“A few? They’ve only been in sims for a few months, they’re doing very well by most standards.”

Vivima shakes her head, cheeks flushing red for a moment as her thoughts get somewhat ahead of her, “Don’t hold yourself to most standards, we’re far better than that. No, other than our family I’d say it’s only that tan one with the nice legs… Izumi - She’s gifted. Anavel as well.”

You nod in agreement, unable to deny something so plainly obvious - they’re both bound to be terrifying pilots in due time, “They’re a cut above the others, that’s true.”

“But you clearly see potential in the others as well. Zenna, Tiff, Blare…” Viv’s suspicious look slowly begins to fade as the questioning continues, her gaze drifting back toward the now empty simulator pods, “Most of them are decent enough for the corps, but I’d have rotated them out for others by now. They’ve gotten enough simulator time to fly right through training and selection.”

>”You don’t see their potential then? And here I was thinking you’d like Tiff with how often you’re both always diving headlong into furballs.” Purple hair and an affinity for nearly suicidal close combat must be related on some deep genetic level. …Or maybe not. Garma’s nothing to write home about as a pilot.
>”Filter them through? This is another part of your standardization kick isn’t it? By that logic we shouldn’t be hogging the simulators either, just running others through them.” That actually might be correct under the current training regime, but you’re trying to prepare a cadre of elite instructors and newtypes, not average pilots.
>”We can do better than that, and I have a good feeling about most of them. Besides, Tryph likes them. She’ll do better training with familiar faces, Mink hasn’t been able to sneak her in as often as I was hoping.” Viv gets flustered around anything almost to do with Tryph.

Now all we need is Mink as a pilot and we'll have the all the purple hairs in mobile suits.

“We can do better than that. I have a good feeling about most of them.” You wave off Vivima’s suggestion, knowing by now how to appeal to her, “Besides, Tryph likes them. She’ll go through training more easily with familiar faces around. Mink hasn’t been able to sneak her in as often as I was hoping so we need to maximize the time we have.”

Viv arches an eyebrow at your comment before a grin starts to cross her face - she looks away quickly, cheeks flush, “Oh, I see. There’s the missing piece then, it’s all for her. She’s… she’s very special, I understand.”

…Is it all for her? Tryph certainly pushes you to be a better newtype, but it was your idea to gather others with potential - not that Viv realizes that part of the plan yet.

“She is.” You agree simply, the nature of your bond being difficult to put into words. Even without that she’d still be one of the most fascinating people you’ve ever met, the closest thing to a ‘true’ newtype you’ve yet to encounter, inquisitive, empathetic, caring - but still flawed and in so many ways.

A silent moment holds between the two of you before Vivima speaks up once more, her voice far softer, “...You haven’t asked for help getting her here the last few months, but I could make things happen again. I offered it to her a while ago but haven’t pushed things because of her sisters, she wanted to stay to help them more and said you could handle things.”

“It’s a difficult balancing act. Now that she doesn’t have to look out for the kids that should free up more of her time,” You reply, the wider implications of Viv’s help with that situation starting to fully dawn on you - there’s a lot more than just helping out some kids, as right as that was, “You’ve met Quina and Mona a few times now, right? What do you think of them?”

“No, not Mona. Not for long anyways. Only Quina.” Viv clarifies, the shade of red on her cheeks brightening - she doesn’t bother hiding it at all now, “Tryph keeps me away from Mona, I barely go inside the institute anymore. I’m sure I’d be fine if we talked longer - A woman of the Zabi clan isn’t so easily dominated by some clone. I’d be fine handling Mona, bonding risk or not, I’d control her, I’m sure of it… but… Tryph gets terribly worried. Nevermind that though, what’s left of the forest nearby is pleasant. We spend a lot of time out there when I visit. Sometimes we even go into town in disguise, pretending to be local students. It’s childish but I enjoy it.”
>>
>>5735564

“For karaoke?” You prod in a friendly tone, fond memories flooding back to you.

“If I could convince her to do it again.” Viv’s shoulder slump, “No, we mostly just walk around. Sneak on top of buildings sometimes. Delinquent nonsense, we even made a few friends with some of the locals… It's fun to pretend to be someone else occasionally. Mostly we train of course, meditation and the like - Have you noticed my progress?”

“As a newtype?” You question, a little caught up on the ridiculous series of events that must have led to Tryphosa and Vivima dressing up as students and messing around in town. Maybe you’re not the only one getting up to ridiculous hijinks after all…

“Ugh, that’s the answer I was afraid of. Yes, as a newtype.” Viv sighs in disappointment, “I hate how long this is taking - I can feel it right at the edge of my thoughts, I just have to reach out and seize what's mine… It’s taunting me! I hate it, it’s like trying to grab a star out of the void.”

>”She’ll get you there eventually, you can’t rush awakening, it happens when it happens… You really enjoy those long walks in the woods though, don’t you?” You know Tryph is mostly just leading her on - unless things have changed in the last few weeks since you saw Tryph - but it’s your duty to poke at siblings over things like this. Step-siblings? No, step-aunts. Ugh, that still sounds bizarre. What a mess of a family tree.
>”Do you want some more help awakening your abilities? We could try training together.” Perhaps it’s greedy, but controlling how Viv awakens might have its advantages, and she’d make quite a ‘recruit’ for your newtype corps, or whatever you’ll call it. Tryph is already working on turning her as well… There’s a mountain of risk, but isn’t all of this a giant gamble against the worst of the Zabis?
>”Then that settles things, doesn’t it? We can get her here more often, let’s just do it. You didn’t have any issues with that a couple of months ago.” It’s actually odd that Viv ever let up on her support for sneaking Tryph in. Maybe someone made an embarrassing comment to her about it?

We're not at the level in which we can control newtype awakenings in a way that can benefit us. If anything, Felix will be the one that's controlled.

“Then that settles things, doesn’t it? We can get her here more often, let’s just do it.” You offer up, seeing little reason not to have Tryph around more when nearly everyone seems to agree it’s for the best, “You didn’t have any issues with that a couple of months ago.”

“No, I didn’t, but a few of the other cadets did notice her. Ones outside of your platoon; I handled it.” Viv half shrugs, “She stands out, there aren’t many Jovians around and she’s… well, Tryphosa may not be a Jovian-”

“But she’s a Jovian.” You finish for her, nodding in agreement, “It’s hard to miss once you’ve met a few, she handles the artificial gravity well now but she still has the walk.”

“I hope she keeps it, it’s very graceful - And it sets her apart so naturally. That’s the right order of things…” Viv replies wistfully, but her expression soon darkens, “Gravity is such a nuisance anyways.”

“Hey, gravity has its place.” You reply, tapping one boot against the concrete floor of the warehouse, “We need it to grow.”

“Defending gravity now?” Viv teases playfully as she takes a step over toward the briefing room door - It is about time to meet back up with the others, “You used to go on and on about how much you love space, but you barely ever talk about it at all now - How’d the Federation get to you?”

“Oh, damn, you’ve got me. I’ve turned Earthnoid while you weren’t looking, and soon I’ll turn you as well.” You reply sarcastically, finally removing your helmet and tucking it under your arm - It’s easy to forget you even have it on at times.

“Me? An Earthnoid?” Viv’s laugh is rich and sweet, and far, far harder than you expected - almost unnervingly so.

The door to the briefing room at the far end of the building slides open with a hiss, revealing a very miffed Tiff - She waves for the two of you to hurry up. You wave her off with one hand, and receive a middle finger for your trouble. Pff, Tiff.

Time marches on, and the future grows ever closer. Your wedding. Your children growing up, day by day. The coming war. Finally moving against the Zabis… And whatever the hell comes after that - Will there even be anything left by then?

Simulator training continues apace, as does the painfully slow process of scouting out other newtypes. There don’t seem to be many left to be found at the academy, between Tiff and Tryphosa you’ve rounded up anyone with a glimmer of potential that doesn’t immediately raise red flags. Others with potential as pilots have been gathered as well, besides just your close friends and the guys Casval hangs around with - you’ve rounded enough people to obfuscate your larger goal of newtype solidarity.

So far Vivima and the other Zabis seem to be unaware of your deeper newtype focused plan, but that can’t last forever. Vivima’s right there with the rest of you, training in the simulators as often as her busy schedule and the academy’s heavy workload allow for. True to her word she’s managed to get Tryph to the academy more often, which has been an immense help in all kinds of ways even as it poses its own unique risks.

And so it goes. Busy, busy, busy. That’s what you are.

Training, class work, more training, newtype training, hunting for recruits, visiting Tryphosa to train with the Flanagan institute’s machines, Tryphosa visiting to train with the simulators, visiting Elena and your kids, teaching Elena about newtypes, Tryph visiting to teach Elena, occasional political meetings, getting dragged to weapons factories and parties, checking in on Casval’s machinations, keeping up with Artesia and Garma… It never ends.

What are you doing today?

>Attending a party with your brother. It sort of got sprung on you out of nowhere, you’re not entirely sure what to expect beyond a lot of important political players being there… This is really more Casval’s thing than your own, he’s probably fine on his own.
>Visiting Zeonic with Elena. She’ll be graduating soon, and Gil is blatantly trying to curry even more favor with your family and by extension the Zabis. No actual Zabis are with you for once either - That’s refreshing, isn’t it?
>...Nothing unusual. In fact the next half year isn’t terribly eventful, just a lot of tedious hard work interspersed with occasional excitement around your family, newtype training, or mobile suits. As long as the Federation doesn’t crash a warship into a civilian freighter and cause massive protests across Side Three things will probably be nice and peaceful… What? They did crash into a freighter and it caused massive destruction across an entire colony? And now they’re running over protestors with guntanks? Ah shit, here we go again. [Skip some time.]

We really haven't had many Casval moments yet. And we might be able to give some actual help here, since Felix tends to be the political theory guy.

Zeonic is too important to miss out on. If we can sway even a few of them against the Zabis it could be huge.

Zeonic Corporation New Factory A, Side Three (Republic of Zeon)

Elena’s rich laugh fills the air alongside your own as roaring wind gusts past and shakes the tops of trees, her emerald green eyes gazing skyward. Her slender arm pulls more tightly against your own as the pair of green mobile suits soar close overhead once more, showing off their enhanced agility with bold aerobatic displays.

To most the two mobile suits are a blur of super hardened steel armor and flaring thrusters, individual movements difficult to distinguish as they rapidly shrink into the distance before returning with startling speed - but you track them easily, watching with satisfaction and a thin smile as the prototype Zakus contort in midair. They’re unnaturally aerobatic, AMBAC system and limbs working together to redirect their flight in almost violent bursts of motion. It’s hideously difficult to fly like that in atmosphere, colony or not; even the latest mobile suits are essentially bricks with engines, they’re meant for the empty void of space - but whoever is flying those things makes it look easy.

“Beauties, aren’t they?” Gil shouts over the roar of the passing engines, the old man never missing an opportunity to talk up his company’s products, “Those two are from the mobility test phase, but the production suits fly nearly as well.”

“They’re magnificent!” Elena replies gleefully as the Zakus shrink once more into the distance before beginning a new set of maneuvers and looping back. She still clutches at her wide brimmed sun hat with her free hand, nearly having lost it earlier to the high speed winds, “But they’re old! Months out of date, aren’t they?”

“Eager to see the new work?” Gil questions while motioning for one of his many aides, “Send a message ahead to get things prepared.”

“It’s already done, sir.”
>>
>>5736690

“Excellent, as usual.” Gil nods, a big wolfish smile spreading across his worn features, “...We’ve maintained our technical edge over the competition, and if I say so myself the gap has only grown - You’ll both like what you see. Felix, maybe you could take one for a spin. Think you’re up for it?”

“Always.” You answer at once, walking along with Elena as Gil and his small horde of assistants lead the way, “More Zakus?”

“Of course, that’s what we do here - Unless you want to see our ground-type project. …And there’s the other one as well, but she’s… not quite ready to show yet.” Gil answers cryptically, and you can’t help but pick up on an unusual undercurrent of… honesty? No, that’s not quite right, but you’re certain he’s telling the truth; whatever it is hasn’t been shown to outsiders yet.

You exchange a quick look with Elena, interest clearly written across her lovely features - Both of you knew this visit would be something of a show, but you’re still glad she’s taking to it so well. Engineering wasn’t her first choice, in fact it was almost an escape plan to get some distance from her family, but apathy for the work has long since transformed into something closer to true interest.

“Of course I want to see it.” She whispers quietly.

>”Gil, let’s see that last one. You haven’t shown it to the military yet, or did I misunderstand that?” Hopefully it’s more than a half assembled reactor and a pile of fluid pulse conduits.
>”Let’s start with the Zaku II, I still haven’t gotten to take a good look around one yet.” Most likely you’ll end up flying one of these, and part of you is curious to see how well implemented Vivima’s plans have been.
>”You have an entry for the ground-type competition? I haven’t had the chance to see any of the entries in person yet.” You’ve heard of the Dom, but that’s a Zimmad project, and you haven’t seen it in person yet either.

A small note I want to make about our officer corp. Once we get all the Newtypes we can out of the Academy, we really aught to start schmoozing up some talented oldtype pilots for the corp as well, if only to further cuck Kycillia and Gihren out of their best men.

I really just want to gyp Kycillia out of getting Midnight Fenrir, if I'm being totally honest.

“Gil, let’s see that last one.” You say after the moment’s pause, intrigued by the idea of something so new that almost no one has seen it yet, “You haven’t shown it to the military yet, or did I misunderstand that?”

“No one’s laid an eye on it except for our people.” The old man answers with sly satisfaction as the group continues to walk in the direction of one of the vast industrial complex’s many buildings, “It’s nothing like the others.”

“A new mobile armor then?” Elena guesses fairly astutely, but you’re surprised to see Gil shake his head, “...Not a ground-type or a mobile armor, and not a Zaku… and it’s not receiving military oversight yet. Outside funding?”

“Not an ennie. No maintenance plan oversight, complete freedom to explore new technologies.” Gil’s smile widens for a moment, “I wanted to give our design teams a free hand, let them push things as far as they can, explore some new ideas and see what might be worth pushing to integrate into our next generation mobile suits. Grinding away at all these united maintenance and production goals has been exhausting. Needed to keep morale up and keep our edge even with all this technology steal- er, sharing the new laws require, and so I ordered this project.”

“They’re sensible requirements,” Elena commiserates, “But they’ll put you to sleep - I’m not sure how Vivima gets so excited over it, it's lifeless.”

“She likes watching the numbers go up.” You shrug, having had more insight into that strange woman’s thoughts than most - She can be baffling, but Vivima always wants more, "It wasn't so bad when I helped out planning it."

“Yeah, yeah, and I don’t see you jumping back in to help with it. The module system is interesting but the rest of it’s so practical and dull… Even Nina hates projects like that, and she’s Nina.” Elena sighs in frustration, “Gil, I’m excited to see what Zeonic’s put together, unfinished or not. …This is the building?”

You now stand before a recently constructed section of the factory complex, the exteriors of the buildings still gleaming and untarnished by heavy use. They’re angular, viscous looking things, grey concrete and steel jutting out from the ground like knives thrust completely through some great beast; everything about the buildings drips of violence. They’re sinister, and you cannot help but have your mind drawn back to the old stories you used to read with Artesia as children - of monsters lurking in thorn infested swamps and caves filled with stony teeth.

It reminds you of the Zabi palace. A chill runs through your body.
>>
>>5738634

A few minutes later, inside the alien looking building.

“Ah, there she is - Or what we’ve got finished so far.” Gil stands with you in the middle of a large hangar filled with all kinds of machinery and tools, one arm motioning in an almost showman like manner toward a towering form shrouded in shadows.

Squinting, you can make out the skeletal form lurking in the dark of the hangar, fluid pulse pathways and cable bundles meeting in twisting patterns running up its height, only a handful of dark armored plates visible here and there. Floodlights snap on, illuminating the unfinished mobile suit in a harsh light, deep shadows clinging to it curving form, accentuating every detail. Even unfinished and without armor or weapons its very silhouette oozes predatory intent; the iron taste of blood in your mouth, its sharp scent in the air, the relentless pumping of adrenaline and the terror of dying enemies… You blink, clearing your clouded thoughts. What was that feeling? It was almost like a memory.

“...What’s she called?” Elena asks, hat now off and held in her hand as she looks up at the dark machine.

“Currently we’re working under the name of ‘Project K’” One of the engineers standing nearby volunteers before Gil speaks up, “No name has, uh, stuck, as you might say. I call her the Kampfer, but others call her Killer.”

“Right to the point with both.” You say approvingly, appreciating the honesty of the names - if the performance matches even these early looks then this machine is going to be monstrously violent.
>>
>>5738635

“Indeed, indeed.” The engineer almost mumbles, turning his attention to his boss standing nearby, “Gil, sir, I take it we can talk about?-”

“Everything. Go wild.” Gil nods toward Elena, who continues to stare up at the half-built Kampfer in something between awe and disgust, “...She might be working for us soon, sell it.”

“Really?” The engineer cocks his head to the side curiously and then looks between you, Elena, and Gil, “She’s young enough to be my daughter… And you’re… Oh. Oh! I see, of course sir.”

Whatever it is he got from that, he keeps it to himself and you don’t choose to comment - you’re here for Elena and the mobile suits, not the thoughts of the employees. You do need them to learn more about this fascinating mobile suit though - there’s a magnetic pull to it, drawing in your attention, your focus, everything. …No, not like a magnet, like a hole. Your attention isn’t being pulled to it, it’s falling in.

You blink again, pushing aside the strange feeling. There are questions to ask.

>”How are the performance projections for it? She looks fast, but that armor isn’t as thick as a Zaku II.” Looks can be deceiving of course.
>”...There’s something strange about it…” Not the most intelligible thought, but you’re having a hard time putting the strange feeling into words.
>”Elena, help walk me through this - Usually I don’t see mobile suits stripped down this far.” Well, other than on paper anyways - Vivima’s standardization plan made sure of that.

The unfinished mobile suit looms within the chamber, bundles of cables and fluid pulse pathways clinging to it nearly like bare muscle, every gap and crevice hiding the deepest shadow.

You step closer toward it, the hair on the back of your neck refusing to stand down, and break it’s hold over your vision for only a moment to look toward Elena; she clearly doesn’t sense the strangeness you do, emerald eyes twinkling with excitement.

“Elena,” You speak up, “Help walk me through this. Usually I don’t see mobile suits stripped down this far."

“Gladly - Not that I see them much either.” Elena considers your request with some trepidation, biting a little at her lower lip as she looks at the machine uncertainly, her gaze sweeping over its form as she probes its mechanical mysteries, “Doan shooed me out of the hangar the one time I tried to really dig around in his Zaku, and I’ve been too busy with classwork and the twins…”

She trails off entirely, eyes locked on something peculiar, brow knitted in curiosity, “That’s odd.”

“What is?” You ask, trying to follow her gaze toward the tangled mass of components making up the mobile suit’s torso, “I can make out the main systems, mostly, but I’m at a loss for specifics.”

“You would be.” Elena nods, her tone nearly as confused as your own, “Almost anyone would be at first, it’s not like a Zaku at all, or even the older types… This has it’s own frame entirely. I thought it was just part of being assembled like this, but it doesn’t need its armor for support at all, does it?”

“That’s the goal; if we got both her reactors warmed up she’s already capable of walking - No skin needed at all.” The engineer confirms, pointing toward the mobile suit’s legs and then arms, “It’s too much work for current mass production suits, they’re moving toward it bit by bit but this is the whole idea realized… mostly, anyways.”

You ponder the implications of this construction method for awhile, slowly finding it easier to focus on the conversation instead of just the harshly illuminated mobile suit, “That should make it more durable than a Zaku.”

“Absolutely, she can lose a limb without-”

“Unraveling,” You almost shudder as you finish the sentence for him, thinking of the frighteningly well simulated rippling secondary explosions you’ve often seen in sims and in test flight footage; when mobile suits lose limbs in combat there’s about even odds the rest of the suit comes apart from the stresses. Capacitors and munitions blow, even the reactor goes up sometimes if the damage worms its way all the way into the torso - And just like that a Zaku becomes so many pink and white spheres of superheated steel and gas.
>>
>>5739768

“Exactly the problem we’ve set out to fix. Maintenance should be easier while in gravity or accelerating since supports aren’t as necessary, and the AMBAC system works more efficiently to boot;” The engineer grins proudly, slightly crooked yellow teeth showing, “We still haven’t gotten a reactor that gives the power output we want, but we wanted to make sure the whole thing wouldn’t turn into a Zudah situation - Zimmad is still cleaning up that mess.”

“Oh, that explains the larger power conduits in the arms then.” Elena clasps her hands together, a more confident look taking her now, “I was trying to figure out why they’re so large - Beam weapons are still a crap shoot though, aren’t they?”

“We’re working on it, it’ll be ready in time. The reactor output for the K is going to be many times greater than a Zaku, we’re trying to push the technology - got Minovsky to work on some it; he’s a hard man to get a hold of after… uh, well, I’m sure you know.” Gil quickly assures the both of you, but you’ve seen enough of the reports about the beam and reactor research to know better; there are beam weapons in development but they’re bulky monstrosities about as likely to blow up their own user as they are their target. Whatever the Federation was doing on Side Seven seemed to have more success, hopefully the information you leaked to Kycilia and Zeonic will help to leapfrog whatever lead they might have.

“Beam weapons still have some wrinkles to iron out,” You understate while trying to find a silver lining, “It should handle heat weapons without issue then. Zakus have a hard time with two at once but this shouldn’t even break a sweat from what you’re saying.”

“We have a number of electrical weapons in development-”

“Electrical weapons?” You repeat at once, the vague term immediately bringing to mind silly images of cartoonish tesla coils and other ridiculous lighting spitting zappy things that might make Glemy giggle - surely they must mean something else.

“Yes, we’re working on a whip, and a rather large net. They’re for the ground type project, a request from Miss Vivima.” The engineer replies without much emotion, evidently inured to the idea of a robot with a giant lightning whip, “The can retract back into the weapon bays on the arms. Or… they will, once we get those built.”

“Revolutionary new technology for the frame, plans for a bleeding edge fusion reactor, greater mobility and survivability, integrated weapon bays, plans for beam weapons…” Elena sums up everything so far, “It’s a work of art. What else is there? I want to know everything, we’re going to make this work.”

Gil has a very pleased expression but says nothing as Elena and the engineer continue to converse; everyone knew it was likely she’d be trying for some kind of position at Zeonic, but this project has clearly hooked her immediately.
>>
>>5739769

“...There’s something strange about it…” You remark between their comments about more intricate details of the prototype, “I can’t shake the feeling that there’s something off about it.”

“...Is there something wrong with it?” Elena questions, “I’m not missing some glaring ‘this is going to explode and kill the pilot’ kind of flaw, am I?”

“No, no,” You chuckle and shake your head, “It’s not that, it’s the armor, I think. It keeps drawing my gaze, I’m not sure why.”

“The armor?” Gil questions his engineer, “This is that Jovian alloy, isn’t it?”

“The one they gifted us, yes sir.” He confirms at once before explaining the details, “It’s a variant of the titanium alloy used inside fusion reactors, far harder and stronger than anything we’ve ever worked with at these scales.”

“Luna titanium? You’re joking.” Elena scoffs, “Isn’t it impossible to manufacture properly at these thicknesses? I remember one of our guest lecturers talking about the issues with using it on anything but reactor interior plating.”

“That and it’s hideously expensive. The Jovians apparently cracked how to do it, not that they’re sharing. We’re working on making it ourselves, but the mix still isn’t what we expected.” The engineer nods along, obviously understanding Elena’s skepticism, “Not to complain, but it’s not quite as strong as we projected it would be - still miles ahead of superhardened steel, mind. It’s got some peculiar interactions with minvosky particles, but otherwise it’s the best armor material we’ve ever come across.”
>>
>>5739771

“The armor did look thin. The armor thickness is being minimized to enhance its mobility, but the allow make up for the weakness that would normally cause - Am I getting that right?” You ask, seeing the logic behind the design now, whether it’s intentional or not.

“Close, but not that extreme. The old first idea for the Kampfer was going to have almost no armor, paper thin protection to maximize mobility and ease of field assembly… but we’ve diverged completely from that. It’s likely to end up thinner than a Zaku, but the protection should be several times greater still. That is unless we get more of the alloy; I don’t think a bit of extra armor would hamper performance much, and it’s right on the threshold of being immune to many weapons… but right now it’s just… uh… resilient, lets say. We’re already working on tentative plans for integration of the technologies into mass production units, we just have to get it all working first. That’ll be years away most likely.”

A gifted Jovian alloy? Suspicious but fascinating. What exactly the Jovians, and Jedar specifically, are up to is still largely beyond you - some measure of political control through newtypes obviously, Tryphosa and her sisters have made that abundantly clear, but now some of the Jovians are branching into secret industrial support for Zeonic?

“The Jovians who gave you this alloy didn’t mention anything about psychowaves, did they?” You ask, curious as to whether it’s strange interactions with minovsky particles might extend to other phenomena as well - though it’s unlikely the engineer or Gil would know anything of the fledgling field of newtype research.

“...Psychowaves?” The engineer questions, confusion written across pale features, the word apparently failing to compute, “I’m sorry, did I mishear what you said? I’ve never heard of anything of the sort.”

“I’ll take that as a no,” You reply, seeing little need to spread the information further at this time - either he knows or he doesn’t, “Gil, have you heard anything of them?”

“We’ve provided technical assistance for Doctor Flanagan’s work,” Gil chimes in more usefully, “A different division of Zeonic handles that work. I should have expected you’d be familiar with newtype research.”

“The Jovians didn’t mention anything about it affecting psychowaves though, did they?” Elena repeats your question.

“Not a peep, but they’re always tightlipped.” Gil half shrugs, but you can see a little twinkle of greed in his eyes as he continues, “I’ll have further testing done, Flanagan should be accommodating. You’re sure there’s something to it, Felix?”

“I’m certain.” You nod, but you can’t help but feel somewhat more exposed by the discussion than you’d intended at first.

Knowledge of your nature as a newtype has been inevitably spreading, it wouldn’t shock you to encounter random politicians or power businessmen who know about it - Zeon’s high society is rather byzantine and information and rumors about Zeon Deikun’s long missing children are bound to get around among the most well connected In fact it might have even been Kycilia or Vivima who told him. Sooner or later everyone will know, even if many won’t believe it - There’s little harm in the knowledge - right?

“...Good. Very good.” Gil says almost cryptically, the surface of his intentions clear but something far less clear lurking beyond. Deeper plans shrouded beyond the surface of emotion and intention your awareness sometimes makes you privy to, “So much technology is changing so quickly these days it can almost make your head spin - But enough on that, how about the K? Like what you’ve seen?”
>>
>>5741012

“It might have my interest,” Elena answers coyly, greatly understating her obvious fascination with the unfinished machine, though her tone soon grows more serious, “It’s going to be much more capable than other mobile suits, especially with that alloy - More likely to get its pilot back home in one piece…”

“The best chance there will be, other than one of our mobile armors.” Gil affirms at once.

“The armor does sound very promising.” You chime in, having expected things to go this direction as soon as you saw Elena’s initial reaction to the Kampfer… or whatever name they end up settling on, “Elena, that guest lecturer you mentioned a moment ago, was she a rather stern looking woman? Early or mid forties, short dark hair - sort of a dark blue - and a bit shorter than you?”

“I… Yes, that’s her exactly.” Elena’s looks at you strangely, “Did you actually listen to that conversation I had with Nina? I thought you tuned most of that out. Ah, shouldn't surprise me, you've always been goo”

“Uh,” You pause for a moment and then shake your head, “I actually don’t recall the conversation, but I think that I did meet her a few years ago. She needed some help near the spaceport back on Texas, so I gave her directions and we talked for awhile about her work. Small world, right?”

“Some people are just drawn together I suppose,” Elena agrees before letting out a small sigh, “You don’t think it was another one of those-”

“No, no,” You shake your head, immediately intuiting Elena’s suspicion - that there’s some kind of newtype connection responsible. All that reading about newtype theory really has stuck with her. “It was just her and her son, didn't notice anything strange.”

“Huh.” She’s still curious but lets the topic slide away now, probably due to your present company, “Well, anyways, where were we?”

“Your interest in the K, if I’m not mistaken.” Gil replies helpfully, getting things back on track.

A few hours later.

I'll get to writing in the morning.

The interior of a Zaku II’s cockpit is, rather unsurprisingly, quite cramped when two pilots attempt to cram themselves into it. It possesses just one seat among the panoply of screens and controls, a modest thing intended for a single pilot wearing a lightweight normal suit, and with just enough room to spare so they don’t cramp up horribly on long patrol missions. It is compact, efficient, and not at all intended for this. You don’t care. You’re getting to pilot a mobile suit and you’ve got a beautiful woman sitting in your lap - Ease of control be damned, this is great.

Elena presses back into you as you tap the thrusters to life, the sudden acceleration drawing her more tightly against your body as you coax the Zaku into a flying leap upward into the artificial sky of the colony, high above the factories shrinking away far below. The sensor readouts look excellent as you navigate Zaku into the still microgravity of the central axis of the colony, but Elena’s far better; soft curves and little movements that just about drive you insane as she leans about trying to keep track of what you’re doing - She knows exactly what she’s been doing this whole ‘test flight’.

“We’re steady up here?” She asks, turning her head slightly to look back at you, twisting about a little more than necessary - just enough to make you really think about it.

“We’re steady.” You nod, flicking a few switches to keep the mobile suit in it’s fragile position floating at precisely the center of the long cylindrical colony, far away from the illusion of gravity created by it’s rotation or the winds kicked up by the heat of factories and the weather control systems. Another flick of the finger turns a few lights from green to red, “And comms are off.”

Oh?” Her voice turns a shade more sultry, “Now why’s tha-Ow! Shit.”

“You alright?” You ask calmly, the small cry of pain breaking up the moment. You try to peer past her to see what she’s done, but it’s not easy to get much of a look around at what’s going on.

“Got my foot caught on the…” Elena shakes her head, the moment of frustrated maneuvering about the cramped pilot’s seat causing her to laugh, lovely and rich and so full of genuine amusement you find it hard not to join in, “I’m not sure this is going to work-”

“No,” You disagree, turning her head back toward you gently, meeting her emerald eyes with an intense gaze; her flushed cheeks grow a shade redder, “It’s working.”

You draw her closer, leaning in. The cockpit is uncomfortable, neither of you care.
>>
>>5742214

A little later.

“...It almost looks peaceful down there.” Elena says quietly while trying to tie her hair back up. She’s looking at the display screens showing the colony’s interior wrapping all about, the crisscrossing of gray roads among green hills, the colorful buildings of the towns Zeonic’s factory employees live in, and even the vast industrial bulk of the enormous factory complex itself, “You’d never think they’re making weapons. It reminds me of Side Seven, so much construction… I bet they don’t even stop to think about what they’re doing, building all of these weapons.”

“Most probably don’t.” You agree solemnly, though you’re sure that some of Zeonic’s employees probably do - people are often more thoughtful then they’re given credit, even if much of mankind is so often disappointing, “Having second thoughts?”

“No, I’ve made my decision,” She remains still as she speaks, eyes fixed on the screens as one slender hand reaches past your own and adjusts some of the optics controls, zooming in the main screen’s view of the factory complex. The camera pans about for a few moments before locating the spiky building among all the mundanely blocky ones, “What they’re doing down there, that’s going to make a real difference.”

“It’s an exciting project.”

“It is, and I hate it. I want it to be yours though. You’re a good pilot, and a newtype… but when things start to get bad, I want to help.”

“You could come with me. Help on a ship as a civilian engineer, or-”

“Maybe. But a ship is no place for Terra or Max.” Elena shakes her head, “The moon definitely won’t be safe. It’s not even in Zeon or Riah, we can’t stay there.”

“No, you can’t.” You’ve thought about this before many times - Your mansion in Von Braun city is practically a small fortress now thanks to Jones and Clamp, but fortress or not it’s still firmly outside of Zeon’s control and likely to be a day one battlefield in any conflict that breaks out. It might even get glassed… As much as you’ve grown used to it there’s no permanent safety there, “This colony would be safer, most of our anti-missile defenses are focused around industrial centers. Zeonic won’t get hit.”

“Yeah.” Elena agrees in almost a whisper. The shadow of the coming war has always weighed heavily on her, perhaps some echo of what it did to her mother - She’s stronger willed though, a truly exceptional woman, and you love her dearly. It’s still hard. “We could stay here, and I can help that way. I won’t be playing spy in a war… probably.”

…You’ll get back to actually flying soon. Piloting a real mobile suit is a hell of a lot of fun, but you’ve probably got a few more minutes until people down at Zeonic start to really get worried about your comms being off. This conversation is important; thanks to Dozle and Vivima you have some idea of what Zeon’s tentative war plans are, you can plan for the future now.

I'm not actually sure. Anons have been pretty consistent in rejecting choices that'll give us political influence. The best we have is a newtype force, and even that is mostly apolitical. I'm not convinced they will side with us fully if we oppose the Zabis in any capacity, especially if we have Vivi around in it. She'll easily wrest it away from us or gain co influence over it.

I've been voting for it, but I can't win.

I want the Earthnoid hussy and Zabi's dead. This is a REAL SPACE NOID HOUSE.

Very based. The struggle is real.

Yeah I'm starting to feel we need to up our influence before shit hits the fan.

>>5743040
My only problem with axis is if Elena was attacked by any force zabi or otherwise we have very little we could do to help during the war because of the distance involved but I agree that >>5743043 is right we need more political influence we barely have any
>>
“Staying here would be best for now,” You agree after a moment of serious consideration, the alternatives either hopelessly remote or unreasonably dangerous for your family, even just Elena on her own, “Zeonic and Zimmad are both building facilities on Solomon as well, many of our fleets will based there. I’ll make sure you can transfer later - I’ve heard Dozle talk about Solomon’s defenses a few times now, it’s going to be impregnable. I’ll likely have my own ship, we could still be together when it resupplies.”

“Safe enough for Terra and Max?” Elena questions, “I don’t read as much military history as you, but calling a fortress ‘impregnable’ doesn’t put me at ease at all. Feels like tempting fate, you know?”

Again you fall silent, thinking on her words before hardening your resolve, “There are plenty of fortresses that never fail, or last so long that it may as well be the same thing. Besides, we’re going to win; we have to… Whatever is left, I’ll make sure we’re all there to see it. Solomon will be safer than most places, the only other option would be fleeing out to the asteroid belt, but that’s months away for most ships.”

“Far too far, we couldn’t even try to help each other. ...Alright.” Elena seems to have truly settled on the idea, her voice resolute, “You’re the officer, you know if it is safe better than I would. I’ll just make sure you’re flying the absolute best that Zeon has. I know you’ll win, and as long as our children are safe too then everything is okay, I… Is it wrong that the danger still excites me?”
>>
>>5743664

“No, never.” You suppress your grin, your chest swelling with pride at her praise - she has a confidence in your abilities that you wished you shared - you know you’re good compared to many, but in a battle sometimes it’s just bad luck that spells an excellent soldier’s doom, stray shrapnel or having the misfortune of being the first unit to meet a major enemy attack. War is messy and unexpected, and skill is no guarantee at all of survival. Even still, you find yourself believing Elena for a moment. Of course you’ll win, of course you'll survive. You're an ace already, right? “...Let’s get back to flying; hold on.”

Vote One:
>Buzz the tower.
>Do not buzz the tower.

Vote Two: Time marches on, faster and faster, your family’s plans slowly unfolding. What are you doing?

>You’re making an official visit to Riah as part of it and Zeon’s increasing military cooperation. This is going to be a very stately affair, ridiculously ornate dress uniforms and what passes for a ‘party’ among the very stuffy conservative military types. That’s not so bad, you don’t mind the dancing. This is no idle visit though, you’re here to feel out support for your fledgling training program among Riah’s officers. Casval and Artesia are with you, but they’re pursuing their own goals. Perhaps you can help one another?

>You’ve gotten all of the cadets of your soon-to-be elite pilot training corps out to actually fly mobile suits - No sims today, this is the real deal. Dozle pulled some strings. He still doesn’t understand anything close to your full intentions, but he has always been supportive of your preparation of other cadets for mobile suit commands. Vivima won’t be there, she’s busy at Zeonic, but Tryphosa is present. This is an excellent chance to really set your cadets apart from future pilots, confirmation of all your sim training.

>Working diligently on your newtype abilities. Tryphosa has visited the academy many times, and you’ve gone to use that machine at the Flanagan institute a few more times to train. Today is special though, you’re finally taking a few of your hand picked cadets to the Flanagan institute. Vivima will surely hear of this, but you’ve had many months to teach them without much interference. The most notable of this group are Tiff and Jett. Your father was right, newtypes are the true key to the future.

Elena tenses as you bring the Zaku back into motion, the gentle tug of acceleration strengthening further and further, pressing you back as you burn hard back toward the inner surface of the colony. Green spaces and gray factory buildings rush up to greet you, growing rapidly larger on the cockpits display screens as the proximity warning sensors begin to blare - Hands and feet move in perfect unison, pedals and twin sticks synchronized perfectly as you counter your previous burn just as abruptly as it began.

The Zaku sweeps up with mere meters to spare, scraping right above the ground and sending a rushing shockwave across one the mostly empty car lots. The criss-crossing lines of the targeting interface jitters across the screen this way and that as you jink to the left and then the right, zooming between a pair of long office buildings. Glass windows and steel beams flank you to either side for barely a second before you clear them, your real target finally in sight: the flight control tower for Factory A’s testing grounds.

In a blur it’s over - You wait a few seconds after clearing the tower to turn comms back on. Curses are still filling the airwaves as you soar back into the central axis of the colony.

…Hopefully that little display wasn’t too much for Zeonic’s employees. They should be proud that one of their machines can perform the maneuvers at all, right?

19:25, 4th June UC 0077
Hötzendorf Colony, Side Six (Republic of Riah)

Pungent tobacco smoke and the murmur of well-to-do conversation fill the wood-paneled halls of the party hall. Stern-faced generals in full dress uniform stand alongside gray haired senators, drinks in hand and every sort of rumor and plan being discussed among them. An electric energy fills the air; it is a buzzing, mind-clouding, war mongering haze. Power, military and political, in intoxicating amounts - Decisions that will shape the lives of tens of millions are being discussed casually, and decided nearly as easily by a few of the most connected here.

It enthralls you, the opportunities that might lurk here. It sickens you, the callousness of many assembled here - They’re oldtypes, oppressively so. Your perception of it has never been so sharp… Perhaps it’s all the smoke? The drink in your hand? If Tiff were here, you’re sure she could smell it on them. They surely reek of the old failings of Earth, the same errors they condemn in the Federation but still commit themselves. You can feel out the faint, sickly edges of their thoughts, their fouled auras, their greed and anger and nearly rabid over eagerness for a war they can scarcely imagine. Maybe this sudden awareness is guilt. You down half your drink.

It isn’t everyone though. Many aren’t so tainted, you’re sure of it. Riah is not lost, they’re spacenoids. Allies, even.

…And of course Zeon is just as bad, and perhaps worse. It’s possible that you’ve grown blind to the hideous every-day corruption of the Zabis and their lickspittles, surrounded by them as you are nearly whenever you leave the academy. Even when you’re at the academy. Only your home in Von Braun is free of it.

You take another long sip of your drink, savoring the smooth texture of it, the ease at which it goes down. It’s no Munzo comet, but it’s serviceable. …Best to stop there, you still have your wits about you for now.

Casval is across the great hall, as charming as ever, chatting and moving among the other guests easily as he slowly reasserts your family’s political presence separate from that of the Zabis. Artesia is, remarkably, also present and for once without Garma in tow - But you’ve not seen your sister since your arrival nearly an hour ago.

Vote One: First impressions.
>You’re wearing a new ‘uniform’, if you can even call it that. All the Zabis have their own unique style, each frequently wearing more ostentatious dress uniforms than simple run-of-the-mill officers. They’re regal, imperial, imposing; evocative of military regimes and the nobility of nearly forgotten feudal ages. You wear a saber at your side in addition to the other decorations; it’s meant to be little more than a prop, but you made sure it is fully capable of real use as well. You never know, right?
>You’re dressed no differently than others of your rank. Your uniform is that of a Guardian academy cadet. Anyone bad with faces or particularly drunk is unlikely to even recognize you.

Vote Two: Who to approach?
>General Roulette. No, that’s not picking a general at random, his name is actually Roulette. He’s the head of Riah’s very, very small mobile suit corps.
>The blonde woman who keeps glancing toward you from the balcony doorway; there’s something strange about her.
>...Is that Ramba?! You hadn’t heard anything about him attending! Clamp would have mentioned it if he was, right?

Drink in hand, you make your way through the teeming crowd of riah’s military brass and their various political sponsors. At times like this it’s best to keep your goals clearly in mind, and you’re here to further your mobile suit training program - and perhaps snag a newtype or two if the opportunity presents itself. Let Casval charm the masses and Artesia cultivate goodwill - You are forging the knife you’ll plunge into the elder Zabi’s hearts, the blade that will cut their family to pieces and take back what rightfully always should have been your birthright…

Somehow even that thought feels hollow at times.

You want Kycilia and Gihren to end, whatever form that may take, but the plan is still more Casval’s than your own. Can’t there just be peace? Mankind must move on from this, a violent shove to force people into a new and enlightened age… Sometimes you wonder if you’re making a terrible mistake, surely men have thought like this in the past. Even Gihren thinks like that, but you’re nothing like him. Right? Playing along with his monstrous plans is just the cost of removing him, it would be worse to oppose him sloppily and fail… You don’t have long to stew in those thoughts, probably for the best, as you soon find yourself standing before the shadowed figure of General Roulette.

He’s a gaunt and pale man, an albino, a decade or two young for his high rank - but his age is hard to pin down from looks alone. Buzzed white hair and red eyes accentuate the bestial aspect of his angular features. A burn covers much of his neck, creeping up in tendrils of scar tissue nearly to his left eye; it’s a wonder that whatever did that didn’t claim the eye as well. His uniform is black, styled similarly to Zeon’s ‘secret’ mobile suit corps but with a few embellishments here and there.

“Good evening, Felix Deikun.” He greets you with a thin smile, crimson eyes narrowing as they search you over for weakness. A presence passes through you, a ghostly mist of emotion barely perceived; he’s been anticipating this, “I am General Duralca Roulette.”
>>
>>5745423

“It’s a pleasure, General.” You shake hands; his grip is like an iron vice, barely restrained from crushing you.

“The night has been treating you well, I hope.” His voice is like ice, crackling and cold, damaged somehow by whatever accident it was that scarred him so terribly. It isn’t unpleasant, a certain charm remains, a natural tone of command.

>”...It has been rather dull so far, but there’s still time for assassins to arrive - They’re usually not so late.” A dark joke feels fitting, you’re well aware of speculation surrounding the failed assassination attempt on your and the rest of your ‘family’ a year and a half ago.
>”Very well - And now I’ve finally found the man I’ve been looking for. You’re the new head of Riah’s mobile suit corps, are you not?”

“...It has been rather dull so far, but there’s still time for assassins to arrive.” You jest darkly, “They’re usually not so late.”

The general’s thin smile widens, “The night is still very young, and there’s no shortage of foolish men in the world - Perhaps you’ll get your wish, Felix Deikun.”

You arch an eyebrow at his reply, an amused arrogance dripping from his every word, crimson eyes filled with predatory mirth. You’ve seen that look before among the Zabis, and even Casval wears it from time to time. Soon you find yourself smiling wickedly as well.

“Would you like that, general?” You question pointedly; it’s a dangerous thing to ask a man so directly.

Yes.” His replies in a low voice, one pale hand motioning to the rest of the party teeming with far more senior generals and a fair few of Riah’s more militaristic senators, “Not for your harm, or theirs, but for the thrill of it. There are so few battles, precious few. You’ve even come prepared, haven’t you?”

The weight of the saber at your side is suddenly at the forefront of your thoughts, the intensity of Roulette’s presence growing with every word he utters, shadows darkening in your mind if not in truth. You nod, an effort of will keeping you from reaching to or even glancing toward your blade, “Of course. Mobile suits are never far away.”

Duralca’s chuckle is nearly derisive, though you understand innately that nearly all his ill will is directed not toward you but your common enemy in the Federation, “Very good, very good - And here I was thinking of your saber, not a Zaku. That’s what you’ve come to speak of, is it not? Mobile suits.”

“Indeed I am, General.” You confirm.

>”Riah’s most recent order of Zakus has just arrived, hasn’t it?” They’re receiving a drip feed of them, handfuls of the most basic variant for training and little else - Few mission modules, and the most basic weapons only. The absolute barebones of a mobile suit program, but still a step beyond the two or three parade models you helped Senator Cato secure as a diplomatic gesture.
>”Organizing the corps must be going well - Some of my best pilots are from Riah.” That’s true enough, for being a ‘Zeon’ military academy you have a surprising number of cadets from Riah in your secretive little training program. …and mentioning ‘your’ pilots is just hanging all kinds of irresistible questions out there.
>”...But before that, I must ask a question; do you believe in newtypes?” May as well be direct about it, you’re Zeon Deikun’s son and among a mansion full of spacenoid supremacists - or people at least very close to being so.

Apologies for the somewhat late and shorter update, I wanted to get something out before the day was completely gone. Might be able to write quicker tomorrow if the votes come in fast enough.

Based off his personality, weapons would speak more well to him, rather than personnel. And we are well connected with zeonic. Fast tracking a limited shipment of new weapons or modules would help us build cred and political mileage with the riah military.

“Riah’s most recent order of Zakus has just arrived, hasn’t it?” You ask, hoping that there might be some room to negotiate a deal or exchange a favor or three.

“Yes, we’ve received our table scraps.” Duralca replies with displeasure, mouth wrinkling into a deep grimace, “They’re barely sufficient for training. Tell me, Felix Deikun, is it the intent of your nation to cripple its allies?”

“No, General.” You reply flatly, glad to get right to the meat of things. Duralca is taking quite the aggressive posture - but of course he is, Riah is only getting scraps, and it is his duty to push for as much as possible, “Resources are not unlimited, Zeon has its own needs to see to as well.”

“Resources?” Duralca draws out the word, enunciating with painstaking clarity, “Of course they’re limited, but what Zeon is truly in dire need of is manpower. Useful manpower. The Federation is a beast that will swallow any Side standing alone, only a fool would think otherwise - and only a fool would squander their allies potential by starving them of materiel. Riah will need more than Zeon’s scraps for what is to come.”

>”If more mobile suits are what you want, then you’ll have them.” That’s actually quite a large promise to make, and if anything YOU owe people favors currently. Pushing things will likely come with many strings attached, probably something far less pleasant than the arrangement you have with Kycilia regarding the Flanagan institute and Tryphosa. You’ll want to seek something significant in return from Duralca.

>”Demanding even more advanced technology so soon after that coup attempt last December? General, you know as well I do why it hasn’t been given already. Prove the loyalty of your forces and it might be done, but we can’t risk technology slipping into the Federation’s clutches.” …You’ve been meaning to ask Ramba more about all of that but haven’t had the chance.

>”Everything will come in time, General. Riah already produces some parts, more mobile suits and technical information will be gifted when it is necessary - I understand the urgency of training personnel though, and on that front I agree entirely. Zeon and Riah will both need far more pilots - and they must be superior to Federation forces.” It may not be wise to step into the wider politics of handing over advanced technology or tens of billions of ennies worth of military hardware - But getting him to buy into your new training ideas would be invaluable.

"Let me speak to our industrial concerns and see what we can do to push the schedule up. Still if training is a major concern, how about increasing the size of the training cohort you send to Side 3. We can accommodate more cadets, it'll speed up your training up till your forces are outfitted and ours can train with yours to enhance support amongst allies."

“Everything will come in time, General.” You try to assuage Duralca’s concerns, even as you know they’re based firmly in reality - Riah isn’t getting Zeon’s best, and even Zeon’s best might not be enough in the face of the Federations overwhelming materiel advantage should things come to the apocalyptic war that often plagues your nightmares, “Riah already produces some mobile suit parts, more Zakus and their technical packages will be gifted when it is necessary.”

“It is necessary, we have few advantages to call our own - Hoarding them so jealously will only bring ruin.”

“I share many of your concerns, I’ve seen the numbers dozens of times.” You assure him, meeting his crimson gaze steadily. His eyes are different that Tiff’s despite the similar hue, more bestial, but they still remind you of her. There’s bloodthirstiness deep within them that is barely constrained, a true call to violence, a call to strip away society’s pretenses and lay all of life bare. Duralca hides his opinions poorly. In fact, it would seem he does not hide them at all. “But more than concerns of industry, I understand the urgency of training personnel - I agree with your entirely, more soldiers of every stripe will be needed. Zeon and Riah will both need far more pilots that we currently have-”

Duralca’s thin smile slowly returns, slowly shifting into a toothy grin as he allows you to continue speaking. You’re not at odds, there isn’t the faintest whiff of deception. He’s a brutal man, the pressure of even standing so near to him is smothering, suffocating, strangling - but it’s honest. Not safe, never that, but as honest as bare steel.

You carry on further, making your case as fully as you can manage, “-And they must be superior to the Federation’s forces in every way that can be managed. We’ll never beat them in numbers, not without all the other Sides, but if we can ready what is available to us, hone that knife to as fine an edge as it can hold, we will win. Let me speak to our industrial concerns and see what we can do to accelerate our military aid schedule. As for training, a larger cohort could be sent from Riah to Zeon, we can accommodate more cadets.”

“That is a most generous offer, Felix Deikun, perhaps even a serviceable beginning - But we are not in our positions to work by half-measures and slowly negotiate plans and promises. A year ago, perhaps two, and I would have patience for it, but the clock is ticking, as they say, and it is perilously close to midnight. You feel it too, don’t you?” Crimson orbs taking in everything, a portent of bloody futures to come - That’s what his gaze is. Duralca sees the coming violence for what it is, he sees the same horror that you often imagine, and it excites him.

The rest of the party fades from your mind, it darkens from your perception entirely - For just a moment you stand alone with the general atop the command deck of a Musai, scores of burning ships and fields of warped and melted debris floating through the void. Just as quickly the vision is gone, the sound of music and the low rumble of conversation snapping back into place.

“...My family…” You manage not to blink, not to betray your shock at what you just saw - It was not the future, it could not have been, but that does not mean it will not come to pass. Could he see it as well?

>”My family supports strengthening Riah and Zeon’s relationship, some of them are yet to appreciate the urgency of the situation - I can see to changing that, if it can be absolutely assured that Riah will keep a tighter leash on its rogue elements.” Your actual family would of course support the move, but what of the Zabis? It’s hard to say. Vivima appreciates the numbers of the coming conflict better than most, but as much as you hate to admit it, so do Gihren and Kycilia - in their own twisted and arrogant way - and they do not share power freely.

>”My family will fall in line. There is enough support to begin - But can you keep a leash on your forces?” …You can probably convince them to move things along if you’re willing to make sacrifices. Exchanging a few favors with the Zabis is hardly the end of the world… Right? Wider support in Riah could be invaluable personally and militarily.

>”My family may prove a problem, I promise only my own support and that of my siblings - Reworking our mobile suit training program has been a project of mine for nearly a year now, and I’m looking to rapidly expand its scope.”

Other than manpower, a more efficient military, and greater influence with Duralca’s mobile suit corps, what exactly is Felix looking to get out of this? Anything specific?

So is he also a newtype or did we just have a vision? I suppose that is the question of the hour.

I would say a type of contingency military in case we need to fight the Zabis directly. Definitely something that would aid a Neo-Zeon faction that supports the Deikuns.

I want to make sure Riah is actually there when the shooting starts. Alliances are worth as much as the paper they're written on with the power hungry types. If we establish that there's rifts in our family with the third option then they're less likely to fall in line when the shooting starts.

I'm seeing it more like this:
>1. I need you to be loyal to our alliance once the OYW starts, and I'll see to getting the Zabis and my family grant more to Riah.
>2. I'll bring my family to support you but I need your support too.

“My family may prove troublesome, I promise only my own support and that of my siblings.” You explain truthfully, opting not to make any promises on behalf of the Zabis and instead focusing on what you bring to the table, “Reworking our mobile suit training program has been a project of mine for nearly a year now, and I’m looking to rapidly expand its scope.”

“You have my interest.” Duralca crosses his arms, his black uniform in stark contrast to his eerily pale skin, “Tell me about this program of yours, what has a cadet conceived of that veteran pilots and generals have not?”

A fair thing to ask, and so you answer, “The current training program is functional on the surface but fundamentally flawed, it fails to apply the lessons learned in past wars.”

“There has not been a proper war for quite a few years, and never one involving the Sides.” Duralca turns to look out of one of the nearby windows, the artificial night of the colony stretching out far beyond the manicured grounds upon which the mansion sits, “What is this flaw?”

“We’re not preparing to fight other mobile suits,” You take a step closer as you speak, keeping your voice low and your tone deadly serious, “The Federation is slow, but not dead. They will respond to them, I’ve even heard that they are already. We will have an edge technologically, but I want to create an unassailable gap in training. Force-on-force training between mobile suits - and every other threat we’ll face - and sequestering our best pilots away at schools to train more. The current system would keep them on the frontline… forever. Every death would be a permanent loss of experience, none of it passed on except perhaps to their immediate unit. That won’t do.”

“You’d strip our forces of their best pilots?” Duralca arches an eyebrow. Far away outside the electric lights of the colony's land sections and the glittering stars of the cosmos beyond it’s glass open sections stretch on. Riah has its benefits over Zeon, and open-type colonies are surely one of them. Spacenoids should be able to see space.

“Not permanently,” You shake your head, “And likely not for the first… week, or perhaps two. I want to keep the spear sharp, not dull right before the most important thrust. Few speak of it, but there is no guarantee that the war will be quick.”

“...No, it is not guaranteed.” Duralca agrees after a long moment of silence, clearly displeased with the idea, “It is our duty to make sure that it does end quickly, Felix Deikun. These training ideas, have you put them into practice?”

>”Yes, we’ve learned many things. More than most could even imagine. While I hope to improve the training of all pilots in Zeon and Riah, there are… other qualities I hope to hone with this training.”
>”Yes, I have about a dozen pilots training regularly and refining them. We’ve learned a lot of valuable lessons about mobile suit combat that I know aren’t being taught in our regular training program. With more pilots I’m sure we’d discover even more to pass on.”

If Duralca is trying something we can get Tiff to sniff it out from the new cadets. Alternatively we can try using newtype magic to see if there's anything, but it's a risk since it might even make Duralca skeptical of our program (we're not even sure if he believes in newtypes).

“Yes, I have about a dozen pilots training regularly and refining what we’ve learned. We’ve created more effective tactics, there is nothing like it in our regular training program. With more pilots I’m sure we could learn even more to pass on.”

“Tactics for fighting other mobile suits?” Duralca asks for confirmation, and you feel for a moment that he’s on the cusp of saying something further - but for once he chooses to hold back. Curious. What’s that about?

You nod slightly and continue to look out on the colony, “...Yes, and much more beyond that. We’ve been working tirelessly for months, but we could use more pilots. With more people in the program we will be able to set up a rotating roster for an OpFor training unit. With that in place we could standardize the rotation of pilots in and out of the instructor corps so lessons learnt can be disseminated.”

“A dozen pilots? Smaller than I’d hoped.” Duralca thinks silently on your words for a time, eyes fixed firmly on the distant lights of the colony’s towns and cities, yellow webs of electric light stretching up and out of sight as clouds and the wrapping interior of the colony eventually conceal them, “We would need to begin immediately then, if what you say is true. Have these lessons of yours been documented? They will need to be looked over.”

“We’ve been compiling what we can into a manual, but it’s no substitute for instructors.” You find yourself thankful for all the long hours you’ve put into this, even at the expense of other pursuits and time with family - Much has been done besides simple training, and with Blare’s assistance almost everything has been thoroughly documented and explained in a number of electronic documents.

>”If you’re interested, I can have a copy sent over for review - Something to whet the appetite.” Letting Duralca and his staff take a look at things themselves might not be the worst, and you’d have time to see what else you can learn about the man - he’s intense, seemingly quite bloodthirsty, and far too strange looking for there to not at least be rumors.

>”One of the cadets at Riah’s military academy has already been participating intermittently - Jett Fan. He has a pilot’s instinct and a solid grasp of tactics.” Jett isn;t anywhere close to the experience of your other cadets, but he’s already in Riah and naturally skilled. Being a newtype helps, but he’s far from the best - lacking hundreds of hours of training makes for a large skill gap.

>”I can extend my stay in Riah by a few days at least, there’s no one more qualified to show what we’ve learned.” …It’s actually rather difficult to say who is the best, perhaps Vivima by a small margin, but you, Casval, and the other most capable cadets are more or less neck-and-neck. Izumi and Gato are both absolute menaces.

Izumi and Gato are both absolute menaces.

“I can extend my stay in Riah by a few days, there’s no one more qualified to show what we’ve learned.” You continue. It’s true, you’re the best for the job by far, even if some of the others might have been able to manage it. Even still, a further message of comradery with Riah should be sent, and so you tack on a final suggestion, “One of the cadets at Riah’s military academy has already been participating intermittently as well - Jett Fan. He has a pilot’s instinct and a solid grasp of tactics.”

“One of our cadets has been engaged in a secret Zeon mobile suit training program?” Duralca questions sharply, some of those bright white teeth of his flashing once more.

“We’re allies, aren’t we?” The air grows still and tense between you even as the low noise of the party carries on throughout the rest of the manor.

“...Yes, indeed we are.” Duralca’s thin lips pressing together more tightly, teeth hidden away and the edges of his mouth curling down into a slight scowl, “There are still Federation rats swarming about Guardian academy.”

“Secrecy was necessary.” You agree, trying to suppress a slight snicker at the mention of federation rats. The general relaxes slightly, but you can tell already that there’s going to be a deeper inquiry into what you’ve been doing, “Not everyone shares our concerns or sees the flaws in the current system, General.”

“No, they do not.” Duralca nods slightly, contemplating the offer. His expression turns stony and inscrutable, not at all the easily read mask you’ve witnesses thus far, until finally he breaks the silence, “A few days should be all we need to get started. I’ll make arrangements. It was a pleasure to meet you, Felix Deikun. I look forward to our… cooperation.”

“As do I, General Roulette.”

…As the general turns and departs, quickly melding back into the crowd of other high ranking officers mingling about the party, your mind cannot help but linger on a single detail of your exchange: Duralca kept referring to you as a Deikun. No hyphens, no Zabis, nothing of the sort. Curious.

>Look around for one of your siblings, they’re surely furthering their own schemes.
>Take the opportunity to speak with someone else at the party, perhaps Ramba or that strange woman you glimpsed earlier.

I want to see if we can all collaborate on something and make sure we aren't interfering with any schemes, but there's nothing wrong with us solidifying our own connections for a bit.

You take a final look out the tall window, taking in the sight of the open-type colony one last time. The twinkling of stars and the electric lights of far off towns and cities almost melding together, each kept in their own section of the great cylinder. Zeon really could use a few of these. Turning you back to the window, you head off into the party in search of Ramba Ral. You’ve not spoken with him in quite some time, and he’s worked with Riah’s tiny mobile suit forces in the past. He might have some insight into Duralca’s reliability, and if not that then it will just be good to catch up.

Only a handful of people try to stop you to speak, fewer than usual, and with a few polite but empty words you’re able to quickly work through the crowd until you locate Ramba and a few of what must be his men. They’re all together, drinks in hand, laughing about something you can’t quite hear. One of the other soldiers points toward you briefly and gets Ramba to look up, and the graying veteran waves you over.

“Felix, my boy!” Ramba greets you jovially, or at least the closest he ever gets to being jovial without Hamon and a lot more liquor around, “You’re looking… sharp.”

“You don’t like it?” You ask while motioning vaguely to your new ‘uniform’; to some eyes it might appear more ridiculous than princely, but you sense at once that aesthetics aren’t his concern - It’s the Zabis.

“It’s very Zeon.” One of the nearby soldiers chimes in, not helping in the least. Ramba nods in agreement and takes another short sip from his glass. Ramba looks older than he truly is, prematurely gray and rough faced, but you know he’s barely in his early thirties - Even still, you respect him, and that little nod does much to concern you. The uniform was calculated, it’s just part of the long plan, but does he have a point?

“That’s what we’re here for,” You agree with the soldier, “The ‘face of Zeon’. What’s brought you out here, Ramba?”

“Orders.” He shrugs, giving exactly the answer you expected - He’d be in some seedy bar or casino with Hamon if it was his choice, or piloting something large and heavily armored. In some ways he isn’t really a hard man to understand, but there’s more than that. “The big man sent us out here to make nice with Riah. Apparently they didn’t get the message that we’d be here. Barely any of their pilots around, just a lot of shiny medals from not much of anything.”

“You’re right.” You agree with a smirk, some of Riah’s peacetime generals showing off enough medals to probably qualify as some kind of exterior flak jacket, “And here I was thinking that we handed out too many. Decided to leave the generals to Casval?”

Ramba flashes a toothy grin, “Something like that. Suits him better, and I’ve got to keep my men on a leash around here…”

The collective attention of Ramba’s soldiers is captured by a passing pair of young ladies, both far too good looking and far too important for a bunch of rough young soldiers to be running around.

“Oh, I didn’t realize Ms. Hamon was here as well.” You feign surprise, pointing off toward one of the far ends of the hall - That immediately turns the attention of the soldiers in that direction, an amusing mix of fear and excitement visible across their faces. Ramba chuckles, knowing better. You might as well have told them there was an armed gunman, each and everyone of them jumped a bit.

“She does keep them in line.” Ramba continues to chuckle while the more gullible, or perhaps just excitable, soldiers turn back toward you with embarrassed and angry looks - they’ll get over it, it’s all in good fun. “Crowley couldn’t be here tonight, she’s off with your mother.”

“Causing trouble, presumably.” You finish for him.

“Certainly causing trouble, seems to run in the family. But you didn't come here to talk about them. What's on your mind, boy?"

Both. The federation for oppressing Contolist with gravity and Kycilia for whatever it is she did to him. I don't know what but I'm sure it was terrible.
