Jail Quest: a text adventure occasionally illustrated.

A night of drinking and a failed attempt to cheat on cards had landed you the strangest job slash community service sentence you've ever had: ensuring Gongalla Gaol survives the reality storm called Singularity.
Now you travel around with your employer and a handpicked crew to survey the four Reality Anchors. Hey, beats being tarred and feathered, right?

You are Rosa Montagni, and you were trying to see what Sister Beatriz knows about the new director of Patella Orphanage in The Ossuary when Nemo and Brother Valencio returned from the main cathedral with an entourage of Bone Order militia. Apparently, this relic-duplicating gig Father Jacquard has is a vehemently unsanctioned operation, regardless of the equal holiness of the resultant relics. Combined with the fact that he had forced orphans to sell them and the mysterious disappearance of the previous orphanage director, Sister Lucretia, this had become a big matter for the Bone Order.
This also comes as a concern for you once you found out your neph- no, cousin, Craig Snorlison, is missing - just when you told him to gather intel from the orphans.
>>
This is a suicide mission. They wouldn't recruit a convict like us so easily.
>>
>>5709159
So, there you are with the whole posse assembled, thinking of ways to get Craig back, when the door creaks open and put everyone on alert - only to find out it's Craig and a girl. Craig managed to reach you and say that he beat the old fox, then collapsed asleep in your arms. Seems he used his magic again, eh?

"Uh, excuse me." The big horse from the soup kitchen spoke softly, trying to get your attention. Did he also join the posse?
"Millie here has something to say." He continued. Huh, so the mouse girl Craig's with is named Millie?

"Please say thanks to Craig when he wakes up! He was so brave, protecting me from Jacquard. Anyways, good luck on your travels, Rosa!" As she departed together with the horse, you wonder where she knew your name. Craig probably told her things.

Looking around, it seems like things have been quite busy. Militia dragging out what you assume to be Jacquard out in clasps, Nemo is talking to the angry-faced demon nun, Sister Beatriz hugging all of the other orphans while crying, and more militia hauling what looks like a nun encased in crystal. Valencio seems to be looking at the crytalbound nun intently.

Wait, isn't that Millie kid one of the orphans here? What are they up to? Against your better judgement, you leave Craig with Sister Beatriz and the other orphans, and chase after Millie and the horse.

"Hey, wait up!" You yell, as they're halfway out of The Ossuary. "I've got some questions!"

The horse shot a wary look toward you, but Millie reassures him. "It's alright, Clyde, she can be trusted."

Clyde settles into a neutral pose. "If that's what you say, Millie."

"I think, you have questions for us, then?" Millie asks before you could say anything.

Well, she's right. "So... why are you leaving town? What were you doing here?"

"As you guessed, we're not exactly from here. And me being an orphan, while technically correct, is also a cover to check on The Ossuary." Millie explains. But why are they monitoring Ossuary?

"You see, we're part of an organization that's going after these singularity cultists. Let's just say that you've been a great help in dismantling their operation here." Millie says matter-of-factly. Wait, does Nemo know about this?

"Oh, and before you ask, no, we don't work for Nemo - but our goals are the same. Stop the Singularity."

"C'mon then, Millie. We've got our next orders." Clyde urges her to conclude this sidetrack.

"Well, that's that for now. We'll see you again, Rosa!" And with that, they departed. That little discussion piques more questions... perhaps you'll find them out later.

Back to the orphanage, you find that Jacquard had been whisked away somewhere, leaving you with Nemo, Sister Beatriz, Valencio and the crystallized nun. Hmmm.

It seems like bothering Valencio's in the cards for today - you wonder what he learned in the main cathedral. So, you casually sidle up to him.

"So yeah, whaddup Valencio? What exciting adventures are you up to in the main cathedral?" Nailed it.

"Oh, not much, mostly boring paperwork. They're going to send someone to fix the Dawn Chapel and mind the place while I'm gone. And oh, the Bone Order's head matron expressed interest when we told her about the Singularity Cult, so yeah. Nothing new." He sighs, perhaps he longs for this adventure, after all?

"The head matron?"

"Head Matron Goneril, yes. She was just here talking to Nemo." Wait, so that resting-angry-face nun was the Head Matron? Interesting.

"She also asked me to find a way to get Sister Lucretia out of this crystal, but I can't simply punch her out of this - I've never seen anything like it!" He motions to the encased sister.

"So that's Lucretia, the previous director? Where'd they find her?"

"Basement, apparently - in the bowels of a huge machine. Probably the one making all the replica relics, even." You wonder how that even works.

"So yeah, Rosa - you've traveled around, know anything of this?"

Well, you've seen similar crystals near leylines, but never one with a person inside it. But you vaguely recall your grandpa telling you a story that had a woman encased in crystal... thing is, you kinda forgot which story was that.

Wait, it's slowly coming back to you now...
"Not actually me, but my grandpa said he had met one. Bear with me, this is how he told his story." You take a deep breath before continuing.
"A long time ago, there was a ghost that haunted the old Warden observation outpost near Goblinton. No goblin dared to get near, let alone enter the structure. Then, one day, grandpa found friends that are crazy enough to inside. Since he's with friends, grandpa felt brave enough to enter the outpost, and found this huge crystal in a room. So anyways, things happened, grandpa fought the leader of the Goblinton Thieves' Guild in the vents, and somehow water got splashed on the crystal. Lo and behold, a Warden came out of it! Turns out she was the ghost of the outpost, astral projecting while waiting to be saved." Hopefully, you've told it correctly to Valencio.

"So, basically, add water?" Valencio seems skeptical.

"Yea."

"Who, pray tell, is your grandpa anyways?"

"Gobson G. Gobson. Why is this relevant?"

Valencio's mood turned brighter. "Ah! I see, so this is trusted info. I shall tell the militia to soak the crystal in water, then."

It was at this moment that Nemo had walked back from talking with Sister Goneril, Craig in tow.
"Alright folks, let's get a move on. I've talked to Sister Goneril, she said that she'll keep me updated about Jacquard and the Singularity Cult in Ossuary. Our next stop is Goblinton."

Oh right, Goblinton. You remember you should visit your family there, there was some family business to take care of. What was it, again?

Ah yeah, you meant to check up on grandpa Gobson and grandma Ko, they've been getting up in years. You kinda miss their antics, they're quite active despite their age. You'll see them soon, you hope.

As you continue towards Goblinton, you start to see more and more of the 'natural' cubicles - same kind of thing as the buildings outside of The Ossuary. You hear something slowly coming from behind; As it passes your group, you see that it's one of the Inner Empire's motowagons - or at least, that's what Nemo said. A passenger wagon, to be precise.

But a glint to the side catches your eye. You follow its source to a knife, being held by a Boogieman in a what looks like a bandit getup. Quickly you scan the area, and see another two of his semi-armed friends lurking nearby. Doesn't take a genius to see that it's an ambush in the making. Good thing that they're way too focused on the wagon than you right now, and most likely haven't spotted your group yet.

You got no love for the Inner Empire, but you don't know these bandits, either. In two shakes of a lamb's tail, you've persuaded the team to hide behind the ample cubicle walls.

"Quiet, we don't know what's actually happening here." You assure the team.

Before you, scenes unfold like a flower blooms. The frontmost bandit extends his arm outward, then made a rising motion with his outstretched index finger. He also seemed to mumble something that you can't hear.

A light rumbling occurs, and the ground directly under the wagon suddenly shot upwards in a cubic manner - which neatly strands the wagon, as its wheels are no longer on the ground.

Sure enough, the occupants are pissed, as evidenced by several rifle barrels that now poke from the wagon windows and the sharp order barked at the men inside.

Meanwhile, the geomantic bandit had dived behind the cubicles - he seemed to fumble with putting something under his bandana. Then, a sharp but distinct note can be heard. The bandit's colleagiates then started shooting, and soon the air is abuzz with ricochets.

Yeeeah, you're definitely not going to take this road no more. You're a con-woman, not a gunslinger!

"We have to detour - there's no way we're going through there unscathed." You tell the rest of the team, who decided to keep under the cubicle-panel height for obvious reasons.

Valencio looks back as more gunfighting erupts between the armed wagon and the supposed bandits. By the sounds of it, these weren't your ordinary outlaws - then again, that wagon wasn't ordinary, either.
"Agreed. But where are we going? Goblinton is straight through that fiasco. Surely you don't suggest us to circle the long way around, through the cubicle forests?"

Well, true that. But you recall something about Goblinton. "No, there's another way."

Indeed, the terrain reminds you of your childhood days - and soon enough, you find a metal lid under a cubicle.
"Ah, lucky! It's still here after all these years."

"What's this, Rosa?" Craig asks. "E G E?"

"Oh right, you weren't born here, aren't you? Well, first, let's lift this lid..."
With Valencio's aid, the lid lifts easily. The team descends.

"...that lid reads 'G E E', and stands for 'Goblinton Emergency Exit'. So yeah, welcome to the Goblin Tunnels! Or Goblintun, as some say." You feel a bit nostalgic - although, things have been way different.

"Magnificent! What is this place??" Valencio asks, astonished.

"From what I heard, these were supposed to be defensive tunnels made when a war seemed imminent. But then the war never happened - then they found the bone layer deep down. Half the town moved down here to mine, and stayed. I guess it sprawled out from under Goblinton, as well." Back when you were a kid, these tunnels still had rough-hewn rock walls - amazing how it's now plastered and cleaned.

Now then, there seem to be several tunnels to the direction of Goblinton - where do you head to?

A loud grumbling sound startled you, but then you realize it's Craig's tummy that spoke.
"Rosaaa, I'm hungry..." Craig rubs his stomach.

"Well alright, Food Row it is, then. I'm getting hungry myself." You declare, as Valencio nods in approval. Nemo seemed neutral on the matter.

"Come on, this way!" You lead the team on, following the pictograph of a nice warm bowl.
"So, just in case you need to navigate these tunnels - remember this sign: it means 'food place'. Right under it is the direction. Got it?" You tell the team as the smell of food gets stronger.

Soon enough, you enter a larger section of the tunnels, full of bars, cafes, vendors, restaurants and the like. Craig looks like he's having the time of his life, looking around in bewilderment. You can't help but gawk, too - it changed so much since you were a kid.

To your eyes, Burgeria is too -sterile-, lacking in clientele and culture; while Cafe Gõb is too high-class for your taste (and probably wallet as well); and Yeah Bar seems more like a place to get drunk and chance a mark rather than a place to rest and eat. So you settle for the unnamed vendor with the long bench, seems like you'd get a good price for meals here.

"C'mon guys, sit over here..." the barely-crowded bench soon becomes a very crowded bench, you had to make Craig sit on your lap. It's fiiine, he's a kid! He's blushing because of it though, how cute.

The other two patrons of the vendor stopped their discussion and stared at the four of you.
"Welcome, welcome! Wow, haven't had tallies visit here for a while! Traveling to Goblinton?" The vendor can be quite chatty.

"Yes, we're headed there." Valencio spoke, to which the vendor nods.

"Ah, good on ya! Usually tall folks use the upstairs road through the cubicle forests, aye? What took you down here?"

"There's highway robbery in progress up top. I grew up in Goblinton, so I know of the Goblintuns." You answer, which brings a smile to the vendor's face.

One of the goblin patrons spoke up. "Ah yah! I heard that Grace's gang is making moves 'round Goblinton."

The vendor ignores him. "Ah, welcome back then! Glad to see anuvva daughter of Goblinton remembering her roots." He then takes a glance at Nemo. "You look familiar, do I know you?"

Nemo shrugs. "Maybe? I did stay here a couple of times in the past." The vendor nods.

"Well then, y'all must be hungry! Sorry for being a tad bit chatty." The vendor stokes the fire.

"Do you take scrip, by the way?" Nemo asks, to which the vendor nods vigorously.

"Yeah yeah! Scrip, Shroomcoin, Credit, Coldsilver, Gobdollar, Echo - I take it, since my brother's a currency fella. Ha! Now come on, what're you hungering for?" He motions to the array of food and drinks on his shelves.

Rolled 2 (1d3)

Let us consult the winds of fate; writing...
>>
>>5719717
In the end, you settled for a bowl of Cubi Soup and a glass of Teeko, for 23 Scrips. You figured out that you have to be a good role model for Craig - and besides, you really don't want to show up on grandma and grandpa's house reeking of booze. And would you look at that, Craig's ordering the same thing as you! Good kid.

You take a gulp of Teeko, and it's quite refreshing! Like a warm, fragrant tea that's slightly tasting of spices. The Cubi soup isn't too bad either, the broth is flavor heavy - to contrast the relative blandness of the soft cubicle cubes.
Seems like Craig is also enjoying his Cubi soup, sipping it in long sips after blowing on it. Valencio is content with a Dango and a glass of water, while Nemo tries the Fun Go Wrap... without drinking anything. You hope he doesn't choke.

After finishing off your bowl of soup, why not get some local news? "By the way, got any news from around here?" You ask the vendor and the two patrons.

You didn't expect to get an entire discussion. There's a great many subjects, but only a few that piques your interest.

You decide to cut straight to the juicy bits.
"Wait, tell me more about this gang war. I've never heard of either group before." Well, kinda untrue - you've heard rumors of them, but they're either vague or exaggerated.

"Ah yeah, the Ravens came to Goblinton first - they tried to gather protection money, but were overwhelmed by the local Thieves Guild - whatever money they get, the Guild stole back. Now, they're trying to get out of town, but the Red Scarves moved in and tried to muscle in by force. Now the Ravens are stuck - they must fight off the Red Scarves, otherwise they'd break their oath of protection." The vendor explained.

"Wait, what's stopping them from breaking that oath?" Curious.

"Most of them are Tmavy Les, they're sticklers to rules like that." Ah, makes sense - once they made an oath, they have to abide by it. Their stickleriness are second only to some Machine Men and Devils from Pandemonium.

"Anyways, you can't miss em. Dressed all black, like. Some say they came from the north, around The Pale. As for the Red Scarves, well, they're a more mixed bunch - but they always wear their red scarves." Hmm, good thing yours is green, you'd be walking with a target on your back, otherwise.

"Right. What about the strange lights and strange men?"

The two patrons are quick to answer. "Ah yeah, there's been flashes of light seen in the open ceilin' holes a bit south of Goblinton. Some say it's the ghost of the ol' ol' Thieves Guild leader, but I think that's bupkis. But, I do think there's an actual stash of Thieves Guild treasures up there somewhere. The lights are pretty to look at, though." Hmm, treasure, eh?

"About them strange folk," the other patron continues, "they were seen just last week, wearing strange masks. Loitering near the old Warden Outpost. Waving about strange branches and being all creepy. My brother's wife's cousin who works as a scout told me they're still around. Oh, and they got a weird anvil-like faction logo on them." While they might not sound like Singularity cultists, they might be the same ones who fought Valencio.

(Cont.)
>>
>>5722886
You turn to Nemo and Valencio. "Well, Valencio - sound familiar?"

"Hmm, unsure... the ones who fought me doesn't wear masks, but one of them were waving some kind of device while searching the chapel." Intriguing.

"Anyways, I think we should investigate these things, they might give us a clue to the Singularity Cult." Indeed, all three news makes your con-sense tingle.

"May I remind you that our job is to survey the anchors?" Nemo interjects. "If you insist on investigating, I'd limit it to just one thing. You also still have that family visit, remember?"

"Ah yeah! Visiting Granna and Granpa!" Craig bounces excitedly on your lap.

"I figured we'll check out the old Warden Outpost for those strange men, then. I mean, bandit wars are a dime a dozen all around Gongalla, they usually blow over quick." Yeah, during your travels you've seen at least three instances of these bandit turf wars, and stayed well the hell away from them. Why change that?

"What about the lights?" Valencio asks.

"Eh, probably somebody duking it out up there. I've heard rumors about a duel up in The Fingers, long time ago - they say the blast-ashes and the ink splashes can still be seen to this very day." Actually, you suspect it's just a way for the Goblinton Thieves' Guild to promote their tourist lore, and you won't butt into their business. The astonished look on Craig's face is worth it, though.

"I am curious, though, about these masked strangers. I mean, a broken anvil? Have you heard of anything like that, Nemo?"

Nemo gulped down his Fun Go Wrap, wrapper included, before wiping his lips on his sleeve. "No, and that's distressing. I have remembered the factions of Gongalla that rose and fell since I came into being, but none of them bear a logo resembling a broken anvil. Yes, we should investigate them."

You briefly look at Craig's excited face. "Right, but after we check up on Grandpa and Grandma."

"Ah, Gobson and Ko, yes? I suppose I should stop by, it's been a while." With that, he pulls out some Scrip - apparently exact change - to pay the vendor.

Goodbyes were had, and it wasn't long before you surfaced near Grandpa's house. You can't miss it - he insists on having his house stay the traditional Goblinton style. And there he is, greeting you on the front door.

"Blimey! Rosa, Craig, even Nemo, too! Wow, today's shaping up to be a guest day! Come on in, you!" Wait, is there more guests with you today?

Well, whoever it is, you still gotta greet first. "Grandpa!"
While you usually dislike family gatherings, Grandpa Gobson is not like the others. He can always make you smile! You remember when you were a kid, he'd cheer you up whenever you came home crying because you were teased for your height.

"Well well! Lookit you, one proud adventuress! Didja make use of me tricks well?" Grandpa shakes your hands vigorously.
"And Craig! There you are, ya little genius! How's the magic going?"

"Hi granpa!" Craig hugs him fondly. You guess grandpa Gobson is just very likeable, huh? "I'm 'venturing together with Rosa!"

"Right you are! Ah, now there's a face I'll never forget. How's it going, Nemo? Is it time for a Nemo Day again?" Grandpa smiles.

"Hello, Gobson. We're just stopping by for a quick visit. How are you and Ko?" Nemo asks coolly.

"Ah, we're fine, we're fine! Also, hello there - what's your name then eh?" Grandpa turns to Valencio.

"Oh hi! I'm Brother Valencio. Pleased to meet you, sir."

"Ah, don't sir me, I ain't that cool for a sir. Anyways, if you're traveling with Rosa here, I trust you to be a -respectable- sort, right?" Grandpa winks at you.

"Oh right, I haven't seen grandma, is she out?" You ask, trying to deflect the conversation from... whatever that was.

"Oh, she's off to the Bazaar, buying snacks and the like - the other guests ate 'em all." He smiles mischievously.
"Anyways, come in, fellas! Meet the other guests and whatnot. I'd offer you snacks, but like I said: we're fresh out!"

You entered the cozy, nostalgic atrium that serves as the living room - and wooah, no way.
"Woah hey! Long time no see, Rosa!" You've only met Raoul Calaca once, when both of you were kids - but that face, you won't forget. Both of you quickly bonded over your mean faces after a quick scuffle, back then.

"Daayum. Raoul! How are you, you rogue?" Both of you grin at each other as you shake hands. To a bystander, this would look ominous.

"You look great yourself, Rosa. Me? I've been here and there, being a Courier. Y'know, delivering stuff and all." He smiles. Is it you, or is he looking even more handsomely roguish than when you were a kid?

"Oh, met Raoul already, eh? Well, I should introduce you to the other guest." Grandpa directs your attention to the bespectacled Inner Empire official.
"This here's Michio Tetsuda, he's trying to run a survey on Goblinton, and staying here for the moment."

"Ohh, hello hello, more guests?" He smiles meekly, holding a clipboard.

"Hmm, what kind of survey?" Huh, Michio here's also looking not bad himself. Maybe even cute.

"Oh, this is to gauge the political savvyness of Goblinton citizens - what factions have they heard of, which one they like, which one they dislike... stuff like that." Hmm, interesting.

"By the way, grandpa - have you heard about the strange men over near the old Warden Outpost?" You know that Grandpa Gobson knows a lot of goings-on around Goblinton, might as well ask.

"Ah yeah, I heard from the Thieves Guild boys that there's a weird flash of light about a week ago, then I got curious and snuck in to see what they're doing." Grandpa, WHAT.
"So yeah, there's about four blokes holed up in the outpost, possibly using it as a temporary base. All of them in funny masks and wearing an anvil-like emblem. Anyways, I managed to hear two of them talk to each other - but I absolutely don't know what they're talking about."

Good Gongalla, Grandpa - you almost had me worried. "Any words you can pick up? Names, maybe?"

"Dunno about names, but here's the bit that I heard, as I heard it: 'Onde e akui? Neo e Zayin, Bordek, San Chalot...' then the other one said, 'Su idiota! Entao vamos voltar para o Panera, rapido! Viva Esendoktrin!' You ever heard something like this?"

"Well, no - not in my travels. Y'know, maybe I'll check them out later." You turn towards Raoul.
"Say, Raoul! What about you? Have you heard something like that in your travels?"

He grins, confidently. "Nope! Doesn't ring a bell. I should know, I went to Trenchtown for my latest delivery."

"Whaaat? No way!" You tease him a bit.

"Yes way! Had to watch out for artillery going there and back, but the town itself is... well, it's not bad for a no-man's-land multilevel trench system, you know? What about you, Rosa? What's the most perilous settlement you've been in?" He flips the question back at you.

"Well... I guess Freeport out east counts. Huge walking town wading about the Pocket Sea, making its rounds around Circle of Fire. Usually you won't even notice it when it walks - but when pirates try to raid, you best hope you grab on to something!" You see that Raoul is impressed, and based by the soft 'woah's, Craig is very impressed as well.

"Speaking of places... where are you from, Michio?" You suddenly swing the convo his way.

He looks up from his clipboard, flustered. "Ah, um, I come from Kyo-Edo..." You don't know why, but you feel like you want to either bully him or protect him.

"Ah, I think I've passed it sometimes. Quaint town, yeah?" It's a small city, but he's too distracted to notice the teasing.

"Y-yeah, good ramen, though..." He trails off, and quickly buries his face in his clipboard. Huhuhu, victory for Rosa!

As Michio blurted something about retreating to his guest room and him exiting the premises, you turn your attention back to Raoul.
"So, Raoul! Have you heard something about the Reality Anchors of Gongalla?" Time for a bit of info gathering.

"Ah yeah, grandpa and grandma told me stories. They're the bits that hold Gongalla up, right?"

"Yeah, don't tell anyone, but my team here's supposed to check them out. Make sure it's strong enough, stuff like that. I'll take whatever info you'll give me." You gracefully omit the part with the reality storm - you're not going to indirectly cause a panic.

"From what they told me, you can expect a dead god, or goddess, in each anchor. They're like a pocket dimension, you see? Well, at least with the one in The Crack. Anyways, grandpa said he had to kill the dead god there, now his friend Sierra's holding up the fort." You're not sure if the part with killing a dead god was mere exaggeration or not, but you keep it in mind.

You were about to ask another question when you feel something slumped on your back. It seems like Craig had decided to take a nap in the midst of your discussion. Complete with cute little snores, too!

"Aw, little guy's tired!" Raoul comments.

"Oh, uh, sorry about that. I should get him to the guest rooms downstairs." You gently cradle Craig.

"Yeah, sure! You go take a nap too, Rosa - you yourself look like you need one. And hey! We'll meet again, and talk about our travels again, yeah?"

You smile, and fist-bump him. "You bet!"

With that, you went downstairs carrying the fast-asleep Craig and set him down on a mat. Huh, Raoul was right - you are feeling kinda drowsy now. You take off your hat and lay down beside Craig - within moments, sleep overtook you.

And then, you dream.

Slipping into a dream felt like going through nothing at all. One moment, you close your eyes in one of the guest rooms; the next, you open it to a vista of an endless, white beach. You sit upright and feel the texture of the sand, shifting softly under you. The Caged Sun hung low near the horizon, bathing the ceiling in a faint neon orange blaze. It reminds you of a place you might have been in - or maybe just heard of, back during your traveling days back east, around the Circle of Fire.

You look towards your side, and see Raoul sitting beside you. In an immaculate white shirt and shorts, you can see his muscular chest - and, by Gongalla, those slick ABS - rippling with virility. "Rosa, babe... I knew we've only met again after a long time, but you look hot."

As if under a trance, you can only blush as he caresses your chin. Slowly, sensually, Raoul moves closer to you - his face but a couple breath away from yours. "Whatever you want, love - I'll deliver it for you~" his sensual, rougish voice sends your flower aquiver.

By Gongalla and your ancestors, so it's -that- kind of dream you're having right now...

Under this hyperintensified sensuality, you lay stunned, unable to break the dream's designated play.
In the next moment you realize, Raoul is already behind you, and shirtless. "You're as cute as a stamp, Rosa..." his voice, unf. Then you feel him licking your shoulder - this prompts a deeper blush on your cheeks, as his robust hands undo your top and starts cupping your breasts... but why does Raoul's hands feel heavier than usual?

The next breath you took was a surprised inhalation, as you realize that you've woken up. Apparently Craig had wandered off his side of the blanket and one of his legs had sprawled itself across your chest. The kid himself is still sleeping deeply, snoring up entire chainsaws - it seems that he can sleep right through the Singularity, that's how deep he slept. That makes it easier to extract yourself from under him.

As you blearily walked out the guest room, by chance you spied Raoul also exiting his guest room. The dream's events plays in your mind in fast forward.

"Uhh... morning..." you awkwardly greet him, noticing that he seem to have a hard sleep, too.
He also sees you, and blurted out a reply. "Heyyyyy, Rosa..."

Could it be? That he's been having a dream of similar attitude?

In a moment of awkward synchronization, both of you blurted out a dialogue at the same time.
""Uhh, umm, hey Raoul, hey Rosa, mmm, you uhh, you got such rugged hands Raoul, you got such a nice ass Rosa, ehh they're very dextrous - know what I mean, err that's the perkiest derrierre I've ever seen, ahh you also have a nice tongue, uhh you have quite the fragrance...""

You both paused, long enough to register that the both of you look absolutely silly, right as of this moment. Each others' eyes gaze into the other.

Then, the awkward silence was broken by Raoul's laugh, one that is pure and free. "Ahahaha! Well, so much for trying to look cool in front of you!" He wipes a joyful tear away.
His mirth elicits a chuckle of your own. "Hehe, we both look real silly just now, huh? Reminds me of how we first met as kids."
Raoul smiles. "Y'know, Rosa - I've been trying to look cool all this time, because I wanted you to be able to look at me and say, 'wow, he's a cool dude!'"

"Hey, to be fair, I wanted to be cool because you were cool, in my eyes! Funny how that goes, huh?" You whip out the finger guns and wink at Raoul.

"Ahah, are you seriously trying to do The Expression at me? This is how you're supposed to do it!" He counters with another finger gun and wink combo... but his has such flourish and a certain panache that would definitely steal your heart if it hasn't already.

In the middle of your finger gun Goblinton standoff, Grandpa pops in from upstairs.
"Hey, grandma's back with snacks! Hope you like dangos!"

A freshly awakened Craig stumbles out of the room, yawning. "Snacks, yey!" he quickly regained energy and went up, followed by you and Raoul.

Upstairs in the living room, you finally meet Grandma Ko. "Mmm! Rosa, finally you've visited us again. Have you been victorious in your travels?" Grandma asks, in a slightly happy tone as she hands you a dango from a basket.

"Well, sort of. I got loot and stuff. And even a job." Technically true.

"I hear you're going to the old Warden Outpost. Going to confront the strange men? Have you got a plan of action?" She asks with a tinge of concern in her voice.

"We'll just observe them stealthily, find out what they're up to. Then it's up to Goblinton citizens to deal with them." Well yeah, hopefully they're not connected to this Singularity cult nonsense. Even if they are - well, how are you going to take them down? Best leave it to locals.

Grandpa Gobson smiles at you. "Good, good! Now that's some proper goblin thinking. Now, after you finish your snacks, let's get going! I know a shortcut."
Grandma Ko nods, and opens a hatch you've never seen before. "Stay safe out there, Rosa and Craig. You're both my precious grandkids. I know you didn't quite inherit my strength, but keep your wits about you, still."

"I will. Thanks, Grandma." Wow, Grandma must be quite concerned, to be talking that much. You finish your snack and enter the hatch.

Soon enough, after a bit of tunnels, you exit somewhere close to the old Warden Outpost. The cubicles have grown thick around this place, but still leaves a clearing from which you spy three of the strange men loitering about.

"So yeah, looks like there's three of them. Maybe more?" Grandpa mused.

Valencio speaks up, softly so the strange men can't hear. "So, what's the plan? I know we're sneaking and observing, but details would be nice."

True, from this distance you can't hear them talking - even though you won't understand their language, anyways. And it seems like two of them got a weird kind of rifle each - what's that curved thing on front supposed to do?

Hmm, you got a hunch that there's more of them, out of sight. Good thing Valencio's here.

"Hey Valencio, think you can do your ground scan thing you did with the orphans' crates the other day, from here? See if there's more of them, and if you can hear what they say."

"Oh, I see! This will be a challenge for me - I like it. I won't understand what they're saying, though." Valencio slowly reached towards the ground.

"Yeah, it's fine, we'll need to communicate with them eventually - so we'll need a sample of their words." This got you thinking - how the hell did the first people in Gongalla speak to each other?

"Grandpa, do you know how our ancestors speak to one another, and to their different neighbors?" You ask Grandpa as Valencio's scanning.

"Huh, I guess it was the old prisoner collars that did it, somehow? The Kobolds never had it, and we had to learn the hard way - still learning, even. I kept mine in my inventory, just in case." Ah, so the old collars- wait, just in case for what?

Before you can voice that question, however, Valencio waves you over. "There's two more in the outpost, in a room underground. They sound... agitated, confused, desperate. Unlike the three above, who are oblivious to the two's distress. Curious..."

"How do they talk? Go on, say it as you hear it."

"Alright, let's focus on the ones below. Hmm... 'Komo iso pode ser' 'o portal neo esta abrindo' 'neo vamos voltar para o noso pes, panera'..." Huh, strange words indeed. Did one just say pies? You peek a bit towards these strange men.

You see one of the three men above waving a device with a weird branching wire, which beeps every once in a while. Then, to your alarm, he started pointing it towards your general direction - and you noticed the beeps becoming more frequent. You duck just as he says something. "Valencio, you see that?"

"More like I heard him, too. 'Sinal estrano detektado' is what he said." You wish you know precisely what the strange man said, but you think your position has been discovered.

In case you're discovered... plan B!
"Valencio, get ready for some fisticuffs, you're going to knock him out! The rest of you, hide, quick!" You whisper-snap the order, which Valencio responds by balling up his inner mana into his fist.

It was at these moments that you realize a fleeting sense of time dilation, unique to such adrenaline-tinged situations: a second feels like a minute, a minute feels like an hour, so on and so forth. Which makes waiting for the strange man to arrive feels longer than it should be.

But soon enough, you start to hear the strange man's footsteps - and the ubiquitous beeping. Slowly, calmly, he strode in with the barest regard for danger you've ever seen - too fixated on his bippy thing going crazy and crazier as he gets closer to your position. "Voces?" That was what you heard him utter.

And then suddenly, BRAKK! A hole erupts from behing the closest cubicle panel. Valencio's breakthrough punch quickly turns into a quick chokehold, rapidly muting the man's already mask-muffled yell. Within minutes, he's out on the floor, his bipper turning silent as Valencio retracted his inner mana back into himself.

You both step out. Neither of you knew if this commotion might be heard by the others, but sooner or later, they're going to look for their friend here.

As perfectly summed by Valencio, "Well, what now?"

Strike while the iron is hot, you think.
"Grandpa, got your collar? Let's see if this thing still works."

"Roight, Rosa, 'ere ya go. Careful with it." Grandpa Gobson hands you the collar, which looks like a metallic torc at the moment. Witnessed by Grandpa, Craig and Valencio, you immediately try to close it around the masked stranger's neck... to no avail.

"Huh, it won't close?" You were just winging it, after all.

"Oh, right, the neck has got to be exposed, I think." Grandpa's advice might be correct, because the masked stranger's neck is covered by some kind of cloth that is sewn to the mask.

A knot undone and some tugs later, the mask comes loose and the neck exposed enough for the collar to click into place. You're kind of surprised at the androgenicity of this stranger - either she's a girl, or he's a girlish man.

As you and Grandpa ponder this out loud, Nemo was keeping watch on the other strange men. "Whoever they are, best wrap it quick - their friends are coming."

Damn, so Valencio's surprise attack wasn't quiet enough, then.

"Get ready to retreat to Goblinton! We'll take the overland route. Valencio, grab that guy... girl... stranger!" Yeeeah, you're not sticking around to see what the banana-shaped thing on their rifles actually do. Now that we got a potential interpreter, it's best for your side to gain custody of them, and Valencio hauls them up as if they're a sack of potatoes. He gives you a thumbs up despite looking slightly overburdened.

Now, just one more quick thing to do before you properly skedaddle. "Craig, think you can make a distraction?"

"On it!" You don't quite know what Craig did, but an explosion of pink smoke stopped the strange men in their tracks. As the mist dissipates, you can see the etherial silhouettes of a sleazy entertainer and a very large, very ornery dog.

"My, my, my, my. Far away from where you're supposed to be, aren't you?" The lithe, angular showman says in a sing-song voice.

"O kue vose esta disendo??" One of the strangers replied in their weird language.

"Ohh, we're gonna havsum F U N..." Trickster treated, as Watchdog lurked behind it. The last thing you heard were rapid gunshots, and screams - or is that laughter? - as you head towards Goblinton, with the androgynous fella in tow.
