/qst/ - Quests

It is an Age of Adventure! After years of Warfare, the Seven tribes of The Island have unified under a Great Peace. The first Great Act of this New Government? To commission a mighty fleet to seek out the treasures of the world and bring them back home.

You are Lono, son of a powerful family back home. Your connections and experience have made you Captain of this Fleet, currently sailing to Mokupuni Holo, until now the farthest land any person has seen...

Lono looks up, the salty air reminding him of childhood and better times, before the politics and wars back home. The open sea is freeing despite the fear of leading such a large fleet.

Kaipo: Captain! A word

Lono turns to see Kaipo, Chief Navigator of the flagship Wa'a Kaulua, they are both of the Ahi tribe, masters of deep sea exploration.

Lono:Kaipo, what is it?

Kaipo: We are on course for Mokupuni Holo but the winds are picking up, I fear the Loa's are sending a storm.

Lono: What should we do?

Kaipo: We can try to go faster and outrun the storm before it forms, it is a risk but we could avoid using too much of our rations

Lono: And if we do not?

Kaipo: We stay in the open sea until the storm passes, but we have no way of knowing how long that will be, even with fishing we can only afford to wait here two weeks at best. What should we do?

>Try to outrun the storm

>Stay here and wait for the storm to pass.

(Welcome folks to Captainquest, a sequel to Nationquest. While that Quest was more Civilization styled political wheeling and dealing, this one will have a more choose your own adventure vibe. While you don't need to read Nationquest to get Captainquest, it does help with context.)

It shouldn't be to relevant yet, it's basically open nothingness between The Island and it's outlying Coral Keys and Mokupuni Holo

Lono: I trust our captains, have the pidgeons tell them to go full speed ahead.

Abu: Stop, You'll kill us all!

Abu is from the Ponni tribe. They are poor pastoralists who know little of the sea.

Lono: Abu, I know it is scary to be so far from home but you are with safe hands. The Ahi have sailed the seas for centuries.

Abu: Never this far, never this far.

Lono goes to sooth the panicking sailor and gives the order.

Dimas, the master of communication, sends the messages out to the fleets and the order is given.

The wa'a kauluas rush forward the sea churning to a bright froth on their hulls.

The rowers push every forward sweating in the tangerine sun.

Soon the roar of the waves began to be drowned by the roar of the sky

Kaipo: it's coming !

Lono: We have to keep going , we can make it.

Soon the warm orange sun fell way to hard grey clouds and drops fell like arrows.

The salty and fresh water mingled in a torrent as the cries of sailors and pidgeons filled the seas.

Lono's heart raced, he wandered if he would be seeing his mother with the Loa's soon. A amasibe wave emerged and they boldly pushed through it
__
>>
Lono woke to dried salt burning his skin. He woke and went to check on his crew

Lono: Is everyone here.

Abu: Yes, no thanks to you
Kaipa: Respect the captain!
Lono: It's fine, I understand the feeling, Dimas what's the status of the fleet
Dimas: We don't know captain. I have received messages from only five ships.
Kaipa: We're far off course. It will take a while but by best guess now is we're 50 kilo ananas from Mokupuni Holo.

Lono: Do we have the rations to make it there?
Kaipa: Bona?

Bona, the head of food storage, replied.
Bona: It will be a stretch but yes.

Kaipa: And what if we try to get back on course.
Bona: We'd have to alternate days without eating.
Kaipa: Captain , there is no way to know if the rest of the fleet is still there, we need to focus on reaching out goal.

What does Lono do

>Keep going towards the destination alone

>Try to meet up with the rest of the fleet

>Try to meet up with the rest of the fleet

I swear to Loa, if we just killed the Fleet that brought such political trouble in the first turn, I will have an aneurism.
>>
Lono: I won't leave anyone behind. Set us back on course.
Kaipa: Captain, that's suicide! Those sailors made their choice. If they survived the storm we should meet them at Holo, but if they died there is no honor in us throwing our lives away!
Lono: The Axeholder out all of your lives under my care, as long as there's a chance ANYONE is left alone it is my job to look out for them.
Abu stands the boat wobbling under their wide frame.
Abu: In the Wars, when I was a child, the Taya Tribe burned our grain fields. I am no stranger to hunger. For the sake of the fleet, I will go without
Lono: There is no need for that, we are a crew. We will eat together and starve together.
Abu, for the first time, looks at Lono with respect.
Abu: Yes... Captain.

After nightfall, Kaipa used the stars to find their old course. it is some 70 kilo ananas away. Bona spends their time drying fish caught by Fara, Muli river master who was able to adapt their skills to salt water.

As the days pass the food grows short and the bellies wear thin. The fish harvested add to a slowly diminishing pile.

Kaipa: Captain, there is not enough food for us to survive, we must ration amongst the most important members of the crew.

>Agree to ration the food
>Refuse to ration the food.

(Next check in 4:30 pm est)
>>

>Agree to ration the food

Lono will go without food. If some of the crew goes without food, it's only fair that the leader sets the example to be followed.
>>
Lono: Very well, I will go without food.
Kaipa: Captain, we need you.
Lono: You are all my responsibility. My sist.. The Axeholder trusted me with you
Kaipa: I can't allow that, Captain you are to important.
Lono: That's an order
Fara: Please fan we stop fighting
The Fisher looks on in tears at the fraying crew
Fara: We came here to help our people, to spread peace, not to go at eachother's throats.
Lono: You're right Fara. Kaipa just focus on getting us to the rest of the crew, I... I will rest.

20 kilo ananas from the main course and Lono entered a delirium. Visions of his family passed before him, monsters on the past haunting his actions.

Woman's voice:The Axeholder serves the Island,It's my job, and now yours, to make sure they get what they need

Other woman's voice: Come, Lono;

Loni: I am sorry Mama, but my place is with the Axeholder.

Lono: Huuurk
Lono wakes up dry heaving, his stomach falling in on itself as he goes hungrier and hungrier

Lono: How far away are we, what time is it?
He looks to see Kaipa staring at a bright black sky full of stars.

Kaipana: They should be here.. we...we have failed.

Kaipana falls down defeated on the hill just before their eyes close ,a chirping is heard.

Dimas: Pidgeon!

Taking the bird they find a seeking message. The Fleet did not continue on it's course but instead stayed behind to find the Captain!

After hasty navigations the Fleet is reunified. A long night of Pidgeon transmissions confirm no ship has been lost. But Lono , now fading away cannot lead.

In a show of honor every captain of the fleet contributed a a portion of their ship's stocks to the flagship over time Lono slowly regained strength as the crew continued on course to Mokupuni Holo

-
>>
A new morning rises as Lono wakes to a stuff sea breeze.

Lono: How are we at the moment?

Dimas: The Fleet is still on edge , Captain we are pushing ourselves to make it to Holo but we may still run out, the storm lost us too much time

Lono clenches his fists he knows he had to make a choice, and there is no guarantee waiting wouldn't have also started them, but he still feels the pain of hurting his crew all the same.

Kaipa: There may be another way.

Kaipa brings out a sea map.

Kaipa: Once the Far Island was found we treated the space between it and the Coral Keys as a massive waste, but the strength of that storm makes me believe their is a land mass close enough by where we could find sustenance.

Bona: You want to gamble our lives on an Island that may not even exist?

Abu: You will learn, Bona, that on this big water, everything gambles our lives.

Dimas: But if we go off course now we risk starving in the middle of nowhere.

Kaipa: We are risking starving now by staying on course.

Lono: We have to do whatever keeps these people safe, Kaipa, I believe in you, take us to this mystery Island.

The messages pidgeons alert the fleet and once again they change course.

Lono looks towards his crew he feels the tension in the air after so many changes of plans.

The journey is boring in a way that is terrifying. How do you look forward to something that may never come? After 15 Kilo Ananas a dire message reaches the flagship

Dimas: Sir! It's really bad, several of the other captains have had to stop mutinees!

Bona: See what this Ahi "plan" for us? I figured you would be used to being lightheaded from all that drinking but I guess the hunger got to you

Kaipa: Say that again and you'll never day anything again.

Lono: Stop! We came here to get AWAY from the politics and the bickering of The Island. As long as we are on these ships, we are one tribe, one family. Understood

Kaipa and Bona: Yes sir.

Lono: Dimas, what is the situation

Dimas: By the Loa sir, several boats had crews try to take over some wanted to turn back home others wanted to stay on the main course. They know this isn't the main route and they know their isn't any ship on record here, what do we do?

>Tell the fleet that any rebellion will be punished harshly, including lack of food stores.

(next check in will be at 9:00 pm I will tie break if it is tied by then)

Lono: Hand me the message ink. I have an idea

Lono: Crews of the Great Fleet I know we find ourselves in harsh waters in unfamiliar territory. But don't forget why we're here. We fought and bled against eachother but now we work together. Lean on eachother, work through pain by the power of being one tribe. Trust that the person next to you wants to reach dry land as much as you do and that the only way to do that is to fight together. Remember how the Great Peace saved our island and know it will do the same here.

Dimas: It's a bit long, Captain.

Fara: Boi, chill out. It's fine captain

Lono: Aggy was always the speaker of the family. Send it out.

The birds fly and as the sailing commences word shoes that while there is still unease it is not at the level of full rebellion

Dimas: This is just stemming the bleeding not ending it, we need to find

Kaipa: Land!

The flagship comes to see rocky outgrowths in the horizon, bold mixes of blue and violet streak through them as waves crash against them.

Massive flocks of messenger pidgeons transmit the message and cheers of celebration can be heard from wa'a kaulua to wa'a kaulua.

As they approach the Island, Kino must think how best to make landfall

>Send a small scouting party
>Land several ships
>Land the entire fleet
>>
>>5032985
>Send a small scouting party

Best to make sure that there aren't any surprises when we eventually do land the fleet to rest, resupply, and explore this island properly.
>>
(next update at 10:45 est)
>>
Lono: We should send a small party to scout, I am thinking about three people. Dimas, do you have the crew list?

Dimas: Yes Captain

Lono narrows down a list of the most relevant members to take with him.

>Ebbi of the Illa Tribe, master druid with knowledge of woodland environments.

>Guret of the Taya Tribe, former bodyguard to Chiefs and expert spearman

>Kasi of the Ponni Tribe, hunter and animal tracker.

>Fusa of the Nupuri Tribe, Fastest message runner on the mountain.

>Lono of the Ahi tribe, Captain of the Great Fleet, former advisor to the Axeholder, keeper of the Great Peace

>Toch of the Chontou Tribe, member of the farmer caste, well verses in agriculture

>Nizax of the Muli Tribe, Expert Riverboat Captain and master of guerilla warfare

(Everyone chose your Top three, I will compile the most popular.

Next check in is at 2:00 pm est.

Feel free to ask any questions that you may need to help with your votes.)
>>
>>5033034
What does this island look like? Grand forests? Plains for agriculture? Very mountainous?

I thinking the Illa, Ponni, and Muli, give us a diverse range of experts to utilize. Druid for woodlands for repairs, hunter for advice on resuppling our food, and guerilla warfare expert in case they run into trouble and need to bug out together.

Lono should be the first one to step foot on the island though, to represent the Great Peace and all the tribes united effort to step foot on what was a previously unknown island.
>>
>>5033061
What we can see if the Island so far is a rocket outcropping a sandy beach leading into what looks like a tangle of low hanging brush. It is up a hill so anything beyond that is unknown.
>>
>>5033078
Ah, then we should probably drop the Illa for the Nupuri, as there isn't yet a need for a druid.
>>
Kono: I think we should send Fusa, Kasi and Nizax. Kasi can help us identify food sources, Nizax for security in case their are any hostiles and Fusa for speed.

Kaipa: You're not going captain

Lono: I'm no ego seeker, Kaipa. These are the pest picks for the team.

Fara: But if you're not going , who will lead the team?

(This will be the player character while on the island.)

Lono: Nizax will take over, we don't know what this Island has and its important we are on the look out.

---

On a Wa'a Kaulua out at sea Nizax mediates through their hunger. A day here and there with little food is nothing compared to the injustices back home.

A crew members tosses a fish fin at their face

Chantrea: Hey Mud-Man, here's an extra serving.

Ignoring the insult Nizax focuses on the Island , hopeful for full bellies and treasures to bring home to their people.

The focus is broken by a word from their captain

Lilo: Nizax, you're needed by the Captain

Nizax: Isn't that you.

Lilo: No, *the* captain.

Chantrea: Hopefully he's rounding up the silt suckers and dumping them off. Here's a tip , drink ALL the ocean after you can.

Lilo speaks to the navigator

Lilo:Take us to shore.

As the boat lands on the grainy beach Nizax sees three other wa'a kaulua's, including the flagship.

On the beach stands Captain Lono, next to him are a Nupuri man and a Ponni māhū.

Nizax bows before the Captain in respect.

Lono: No need for that, I'm just a sailor like you, not a chief.

Nizax: The Loa honor us for bringing u to safety.

Kasi: Loa my ass, in was the Captain who navigated us to safety.

Lono: Actually that was Kaipa, but I don't think the Loa would enjoy the insult.

Fusa: This chatter wastes time, what is our purpose here?

Lono: The Island needs to be scouted out before we land, priortize finding food sources and places to make camp.

Kasi: Wait, you're putting a Mud-man in charge?

Lono: Hey, cool it, I need you working together
Lono takes out an obsidian dagger, gifted to him by The Axeholder

Lono: I know you have your own arms but I trust you with something a bit more high grade.

Nizax: You honor me captain.

Lono: The honor is mine. Try to com back to report by sunrise tomorrow.

Nizax takes the team up the sandy hill and when they reach the top they look down on a massive vista.

Below them is a steep drop of sandy rocks leading into a valley full of brush and small trees. To their left are multicolored rocks that wrap around the Island coast. Behind them is the beach.

>Scale the rocks

>Walk through the brush

Nizax: We need to go deeper inland.
Fusa: Is that wise? Do any of us have experience in woodland environments
Nizax: The Muli river cuts through our entire Island, there isn't a land I haven't rowed through. Come on.
The trio walk through the bush cutting through scraggy thorns that scratch their skin. Eventually they come to a clearing. Hard soil dotted with little green bulbs.
Fusa: This land is barren, it seems the Loa mock us today.
Kasi: Figures someone from that rock would think that but look here
Kasi points to several marks and holes in the bulbs.
Kasi: Animals eat these. And if it swims crawls or flies we can eat them.

Kasi looks ok the ground and identifies a track to follow as the trio move toward it they find a small long eared furry creature on the ground.

Kasi: And we eat meat tonight.

Kasi lines up a sling and hits the animal right in the eye. It falls dead and the hunter picks it up.

Kasi: We can hunt a few of these until we find their nests once we learn how to get them the entire fleet can eat well. Guess the Captain should have put me in charge, eh Mud-Man?
Nizax stares Kasi in the eye and walks up to them.
Nizax raises a hand... And puts it on the māhū's shoulder.
Nizax: Good job, we have served the fleet well, let us keep looking.

As the night grows longer they capture more of the animals until Fusa cries in shock.

Nizax: What happened!

Fusa: We are not alone here, look.

Beneath the runners feet lays a snare trap, triggered and dodged at a moments notice. It's stake glows shiney with an odd hard material, unlike any they have seen before.

Fusa: What the fuck is this.

The others stare at the surprising shoe of emotion.

Nizax: This changes everything

>Continue to scout our food sources

>Try to track the trapmaker
>>
Nizax gives a stone snare.

Nizax: Follow me, we are hunting a new prey now.

Nizax looks at the snare, the cuts on the sapling are still wet, the snare was laid recently.

Nizax: There is no shade here, we need to circle around the brush and find ideal locations for a campsite. Kasi

Kasi: Whu-

Nizax: You can scout out food hunting locations, yes?

Fusa: If this snare is fresh it is unlikely the trapmaker came from the same direction as us otherwise we would have run into them.

Kasi: So we move forward and work around the shade of the brush.

The three start walking around the border of the savannah and the brush until Nizax tells them to stop.

In the distance flies surround a dead body. Nizax inches closer alone, the smell of rot something she is all too familiar with.

The body is wearing clothes of an unknown fabric, brown and with little hairs matted on it. They lay face up, belly thin and ribs showing.

Fusa: What savage would leave a body desecrated like this?

Nizax: The flesh isn't decayed enough, that isn't rot, this person starved to death.

Fusa: That doesn't bode well for eating here.

>Search the body
>Keep looking for the trapmaker
>>
>>5033778
>Search the body
>>
Nizax crouches down to the body and begins the search

The clothes seem to be buttoned with shell or bone. The shoes are very worn Sandler's. Judging by the bite marks they tried to eat them in desperation. Judging by the general size they are 20-40 years the withering makes a firm estimate difficult. None of that strange hard material can be found on them. On their neck a brand is found a circle with a triangle pointing down cut out of it.

Kasi: No way they set those traps in this condition.

Fusa: But if they were camping here, it stands to reason so we're others.

Nizax: We are on the right path. Let's move forward

Fusa: Wait. It is a dishonor to leave a body as such, we should send it properly to the Loa's.

Kasi: Hey running-man, we don't have time for that.

Nizax: Kasi is cruse, but correct, when the current problem si dealt with we'll come back and have a proper cermoney.

Fusa: You challange The Loa, it is unwise to do so in such dangerous times, we must not provoke them.

Kasi: Oh wow, Rocks vs Mud, I wonder who'll win?

Nizax: Kasi, be silent or be silenced.

Kasi stands back at the sudden shift.

Nizax: I was tasked by The Captain to oversee this duty, are you disobeying an order.

Fusa: Your order is unwise. This body is proof of how harsh this land is, we can't afford to give up any advantage. If your order is to dishonor the Loa, then that is an order I will not obey.

Nizax: This land is dangerous and we have a duty to the Fleet and the Captain. Do not the Loa teach loyalty?
Fusa: To leave a vessel of the soul in such a state...
Nizax: I swear to you on all beyond and below that the first time it is safe to do so we will honor this person. But listen to me, I learned in the wars that honor is a luxury. Survival of the physical form must come first before one can focus on the spiritual.

Fusa: Your points are sound, but they troubled me.

Kasi: Ah and here I thought you were gonna have a dust up. Would be interesting to see which one of you would make-
Kasi drops to the ground with a firm back fist from Nizax.
Nizax: I won't do that again. Both because I don't want to hurt a teammate and because the next time I do, you won't get up.
Kasi slowly wobbles up to meet Nizax's eyes.
Nizax: Do not threaten the integrity of this team again. Do you understand?
Kasi: Yes..yes Ma'am.
Nizax: Good, let's keep moving.

The sun begins to set and the shadows grow long as they hug the tree line eventually as dusk comes to the land they find an opening in the brush, within they see taller trees forming a dark canopy and smooth lime-blue grass sparkling like jewels with dew. As gorgeous as it is forboding.

Kasi: Now this, this is a campsite.

Fusa: Which means our trapmaker probably can be found within this forest. Nizax, what should we do?

>Set up camp for the night at the edge of the Woods.
>Keep looking deeper into the woods.
>>
>>5034588
>Keep looking deeper into the woods.

Just to make sure the immediate area is secured. Then, rest.
>>
Nizax: We need to go deeper. Finding living people may be the fleet's only chance you survive.

Kasi: Don't worry Runner-man, if you get scared you can always get away.

Fusa: Fear is wisdom in the face of danger.

Kasi: And chaski are cowards in the face of conflict. Always dashing between bloodshed carrying messages, never getting your hands dirty.

Fusa: You try to anger others to to make yourself feel braver. A logical strategy when alone, but not as part of a team.

Nizax: Fusa is right. Cut the crap form a triangle on me, I'm going in first.

The trio pierce into the moongloe darkness. Gnats glowing silver in the shining light.

The sparkles and shadows meld with dark green trees. It is as gorgeous as it is terrifying.

While I'm the arbor tunnel Nizax sees trees with branches napped off, the cuts get older as they go deeper.

Nizax: We are getting closer-
An arrow whistles through the shadows , piercing Nizax's shoulder.

Nizax:Get down

The other two flop into the grass. Wetness soaking their clothes while arrows rain from above.

Kasi: I can't see the bastard!

Nizax: Roll into the forest and flank them from the brush, they can't understand us!

The squad enter the trees and the arrows stop.
The crackling of leaves echoes through the silent darkness.

Nizax: Those shots came from above, they must be in the trees.

Kasi: Unless they're a lemur they have to come down some time, we can wait them out.

Fusa: Nizax is wounded!

Kasi: I took down a wild Doomboar with my bare hands, let me handle this little fisherman.

Kasi: Fusa, no! Face us you coward!

Kasi runs forward drudging through the darkness they scream as Nizax hobbles over

Kasi: Stay with me! Stay with me you rock eating idiot! Come on. COME ON!

Nizax looks at Fusa's bleeding form, their chest is leaking from a wound of a cut sharper than anything you've ever seen. This is no jagged obsidian wound, it looks like the skin is opening up like it's MEANT to.

Fusa’s breath becomes more shallow and tears flow from Kasi’s face.
Kasi: You fucking savage! I’ll kill you!
Kasi gets up by is held back by Nizax
Nizax: The two of us are wounded, the mission is more important than your pride.
Kais grits their teeth and kneels down to attend to the wounds. The dark makes it hard to see how deep the cut went but it is clear damage has been done. The skin is spreading into the shape of a bali-ball.
Nizax opens a container of war-wine and pours it on the cut. Fusa wheezes through the pain.
As Nizax works, Kasi hears an approaching figure.
Kasi: They’re coming! Stand back, boss.

Through the moonlight a shadowy figure. can be seen. They are shirtless and their face is painted with dark inks that blend them into the night. Their pants are a heavily clothed bunch of fabric with many pouches and pockets. They walk to you and stand with hands raised.

The Archer takes out their pouch a series of needles, each made from that strange material. They are connected to a series of fine wire cords, they seem to want to stitch Kasi

Nizax gives Kasi a look that anyone who has been in the heat of war recognizes. One that tells you to shut up and listen if you want to live.
Kasi slowly backs down and the Archer begins to work. Fusa winces as the needles Pierce and hold together the wounded flesh.

After they are done, they take a jar of what smells like a much stronger war wine and pours it on the wound. Wiping it off they apply a poultice and bandage. The Archer looks at Nizax, then points to Fusa and smiles

Archer: Saīm jakīrelil.

Kasi: Why are you talking, they can't understand you.
Nizax: Body language and tone make up for more of language than you would expect

Archer: Le-jacēste
The Archer gestures for the three to follow deeper into the woods.

The Archer reaches for Fusa and Kai's gets in between them.

Archer: They're not touching him. I'll carry him alone.

Nizax gets up and the Archer notices their wound as well.

Nizax: Can you do me as well?

Nizax wound was less dangerous but very crippling. No stickers were used for the treatment but the pain made walking go slower.

As the four walked through the woods the moon rose higher in the sky until the sparkling light illuminated the Archer further.

Their face paint was formed into a series of elaborate symbols, similar symbols were tattooed on their back.

As they walked the clanking of their strange tools rattles from their pouches.

Eventually they come to a small camp in a Grove. Butchered meat sits preserving in salt. A lean-to is built into a tree at the edge of the Grove. Soft moss had been collected into a sort of matting around the camp.

The Archer gestures to lay Fusa on the mat and Kasi begrudgingly accepts.

Kasi grabs the Archer's wrist and they begin to grapple to the ground.
The remaining two raiders step back and assess the situation, unsure of the foreigners' loyalties.

Nizax: There is no need to fight!
Nizax grabs the stick from the Raider they are fighting with and breaks it over their knee.
Taking advantage of the distraction, The Archer punches Kasi in the face and leaps up.
The Archer draws their dagger and points it right at the assembled Raiders.

The night still has a few hours left in it, and all parties are rather tired.

Nizax: We still need them. If we can figure out a way to reach their homeland, we may save this expedition.

The Four share a fitful sleep as the sun rises.

In the morning, Nizax is woken by a scream

Kasi: Fusa you live!

Fusa: Not for long if you keep holding me like that.
Fusa ends the emotional embrace with a tinge of embarrassment

Kasi: I see you still have rocks in your head runner.

Fusa: And you're still a pigdick

Fusa smiles while giving the insult.

Nizax: I'm glad to have you back amongst us.

Fusa looks at their wound

Fusa:Did we catch the Archer?

Nizax: In a manner of speaking.

The Archer walks into view and Fusa nearly pops a stitch in shock .

Fusa: They're here!

Nizax: Be easy, Fusa. They are allied with us for now.

Fusa: They cut me down. They shot you!

Nizax: And they are the reason you still live. Harsh times bring harsh decisions.

Nizax kneels by Fusa.

Nizax: Can you walk brother.

Fusa leans up with aid from his commander.

Fusa: Slowly, but yes.

Nizax sees the pain in the eyes of a runner denied their speed.

Nizax: We need to get back to the Fleet. They need to learn what we know.

The four begin the hard Trek back through the woods at out to the beach, the day turning to sunset as they come across the shore.

At the shore, the fleet has made camp, fishing the oceans in line with Ahi tradition.

Captain Lono notices the crew coming across the horizon and they are warmly welcomed.
>>
In Lono's Command Tent, Nizax is debriefed to the Captain and the Chief Navigator
Lono: Are you sure this land mass exists.

Nizax: It would have to, this Island doesn't have the resources to support it's native population.

Lono: Kaipo, does this make sense?

Kaipo: The Ahi have long theorized that islands could lead to larger land masses, but to gamble the fleet on the word of a Savage

Lono: What would you have us do.

Kaipo: This island is sparse but we are mighty

, if we unleash the full force of our fleet we can strip this Island do Every scrap of food it has. That should be enough to get us to Mokupuni Holo.

Nizax: There are people on this Island , we would starve them.

Kaipo: My loyalty is to this fleet and to my people, where does YOURS lie?

Lono: Enough of that, what do you suggest Nizax?

Nizax: I think the Archer's Homeland is an idea we should think about?

I don't see how starving these people will benefit the ideals of the Great Peace.

Lono: We're not gonna starve these people. That's not my sister's way and that's not mine. Kaipa, see if you and the test of the navigators can try to estimate the nearest landmass. I want to talk to this Archer.

Across the sands, the Archer is both a guest and a prisoner. The fish of the sea was gratefully shared with them by sailors, sailors that would never leave them alone.

As Lono approaches the crew members hail their captain, the Archer sees this and mimicks the gesture.

Lono: There's no need for any of that. Especially from a guest. We're all just sailors here.

Archer: Anlāsi, Makerāon.

Lono: Anlāsi to you as well. If I'm getting that right.

Archer: Rīen wa.

Lono: This language barrier is gonna be a hard one. But I hear you draw.

Lono picks up a stick and draws a picture of the fleet. He draws The Island and then gestures in it's direction. He passes the stick to the Archer.

Lono: Can you show us where you came from?

The Archer picks up the stick, things hard for a moment and then points back towards the forest.

Lono: That's East

Kaipo: Or it could just be where they dropped them off.

Kaipo walks to the Captain face gritted on frustration.

Kaipo: The navigators all say it's POSSIBLE but tracking something that is land but not an island is... It's something fundamentallly never done. It's like trying to measure the size of a Loa's bones.

Lono: If we saw more of this Island, would that help?

Kaipo: A bit yes. I still think we should...

Lono: We came her to help The Island, not hurt innocents.

Kaipo: These savages attacked our team and themselves. They are far from innocent.

Lono: That may be, but that is for The Loa to judge, not us. I'll need to send out another team with the Archer. Nizax and Kasi are too injured at the moment.

I was really torn on this, as I wanted to check out the viability of agriculture on this island, and see if there are different hunting prey here, but I figured woodland knowledge and combat prowess was prudent if we're bringing Lono along, and I figure having some Ahi knowledge of the seas would help when we reach the other side of the island. Doesn't hurt that I think Lono would be interested in breaking the language barrier with our foreign friend here.

How far away are we from our original island, and how far from this island to the Archer's land OOC? I'm trying to get a mental image of the general layout of the nearby lands, and it would help if I had a RL example to draw some basis here, even if we can't use that knowledge IC.

We are about 40-50 Kilo Ananas from the original Island. It is unknown how close or in which direction this hypothetical "non-Island land" is , this is the primary purpose of this expedition.

Lono woke from his tent with the sea to his back and the sun in his eyes. He still wasn’t used to the sun rising *away* from the ocean. Just another reminder of the strange land they were in.

He selected himself to lead the expedition across the Island. His meta-sister never shied away from doing what had to be done...no matter how hard it would be. Ebbi and Guret would accompany him. Ebbi’s woodland knowledge should help navigating the dense shrublands they’ll be trekking through and Guret would be helpful if they ran into any hostiles.

Once out of his tent he sees his team with The Archer. This “native” is the one who told them of a so-called “land that is not an island '' that they need to find to replenish the foodstores of their stretched thin fleet.

Kaipo, head navigator talks with the Captain

Kaipo: If you record the swell and star placements of this island’s other shore, we may be able to see if we can locate this “not island.”

Lono: You and the navigators will get that information.

Kaipo: Great Captain, who shall lead the fleet in your absence?

Lono thinks for a moment then turns to Kaipo

Lono: Nizax has proven to be a true servant of The Great Peace. I can think of no better candidate.

Kaipo: But Captain, a Mud-m... I mean a Muli leading the people's of the Island? The crew will not respect that?

Lono: If we can't put our Betty bigotries aside for the sake of survival, we deserve to die out here. Ebbi. Guret. Come one
The two rush to the Captain's side.
Lono: Let's have our guest guide us through the rest of the Island.

Lono: The mission is too important, we have to leave them here. Ebbi give them my rations.

Ebbi: Captain, I

Lono: I cant ask any of you to do that, it’s my job to look out for the mission and that now includes protecting everyone on this Island.

Ebbi leaves to the Elder and gives them portions of dried fish while Guret carefully keeps the Archer separate.

Ebbi: This soil means we should be close to the shore if we make hate we can make it back to camp before you get too hungry.

Guret: Then let’s gece.

The four leave the Elder behind and begin walking down a hilly outcropping.

As they get closer to shore The Archer gets more and more nervous. The wind picks up and a rancid smell of salt and decay hits there noses.
They come across a bend in the shore and sea several bodies decaying outside the ocean.

The Archer stands back while the three crewmembers stare aghast.

Guret: They all starved....

Lono holds his breath and wades straight to the sea measuring the coast line based on years of Ahi tradition.

Lono: We’ll need to make camp here for the night so I can get a star reading. It’s time we gave these people a proper burial.

As the sun set the three bury the many corpses and give praise to the Loa.

As night begins to set and lean toes are made, the crew begin tto rest while Lono intensely studies the sky.

While Guret and Ebbi sleep and while Lono is seemingly distracted, he notices the Archer sneaking off back up the hills.

Lono sets down his star chart and stalks silently through the sand.

Up the hill The Archer moves through the shrubs and bushes with practiced ease. The Moon is small, and light is low. Lono doesn't have the tracking skills of Ebbi or Kasi but he puts in the effort, until eventually he sees the foreigner disappear into a clearing.

Lono stays in the underbrush and peak outward, On the other side of the clearing a small fire can be found. Two or three figures stand around it. Through its flickering shadows, Lono sees the Archer raises their bow and begin to notch it with an arrow.

Lono goes forward to stop the archer but something in the back of his mind freezes him. For the first time in his life he is alone in the face of danger. His legs refuse to move and he sees the Archer draw the bow and let it loose. A scream of pain and one of fear comes through the night and The Archer rushes forward.

Lono crawls slowly to where the Archer was and sees them standing over a corpse. From the glows of the flame Lono sees the Archer taking their odd knife and making ritualistic cuts on their prey. Lono stares in bile fascination before The Archer suddenly turns around.

Lono hides back in the brush and makes goes as fast as he can back to camp. He breaths in effort and emotion as he looks at his sleeping crew.

I honestly don't know what these anons were thinking, and I didn't want to paralyze the vote, but clearly what we did was in violation of our own tenets as representative of the Great Peace. As a quest oldfag, I do not approve of what we done, and will endeavor to voice any disagreements in the future.

I'll let the anons decide how they want to handle the mess they made, but a repeat offense is unacceptable.
>>
>>5053877
If no one want to fix this mess, I guess that I'm forced to stand up and decide.

>Wake them and tell them what you saw

They deserve to know. While I don't feel inclined to punish the Archer, as he does not know or understand our ways, that doesn't mean that we should accept or condone such behavior further. Revenge killings just perpetuates the violence and hate, it doesn't create peace or prosperity.

Lono knelt down overcome with emotions. He felt guilt, fear and deep rush of adrenaline. As his racing thoughts cleared he looked at his crew and knee what he had to do.

Lono: Wake up! Everyone up.

The crew rouses to consciousneds looking at their superior with confusion.

Lono: I tracked the Archer through the woods, they have killed another Islander.

Ebbi: Where are they right now?

Lono: On their wake back most likely

Ebbi: We need to have a plan. What are your orders Captain?

Guret: Stand back Chief, I can handle this'un

Lono: We'll do this together, Guret. The Archer is my responsibility.

Ebbi: Look at the brush, they coming!

The three worked with practiced ease. Before the Archer could raise a weapon, Guret's shaft slammed into their face. The cries of pain were muted by the sounds of Ebbi and Lono wrestling their would be captive to the ground.

Ebbi: Bind the arms!

With skill practiced on many errant Doomswine, fiberous thongs were used to tie the Archer's arms to their back.

Archer:rū hūta!

The three step back as the Archer struggles against the bonds

Guret: This ones more trouble than it's worth.

Ebbi: If we have the star charts already, we don't need to keep traveling with them

Just catched up to the quest, pretty interesting so far.

that being said, we don't have the right to execute the archer for trying to avenge his friend.

Lono: This isn't our land, it's not our place to pass judgement.

Lono walks to the bound Archer and with their own knife, gestures the same rituals cuts they made on their victim.

He brings the knife down and cuts the ropes.

Lono points to the woods.

Lono: You are free now. Let's go.

Lono walks back towards the fleet while Ebbi and Guret follow.

The journey is filled with tense emotion, few words are exchanged.

Ebbi: They’ll listen to their stomach.
Ebbi kneels before the old villager and offers a parcel fo food. The elder grabs it and eats it greedily.
Lono stands before the Elder and speaks gentley
Lono: Come with us, we’ree here to help.
The Elder take Lono’s outstretched hand and the four walk back to the shore.

The four come to the fleet docs at shore just as the sun rises. The shore buzze with activity, Lono senses somethign is wrong.

Toch: Captain! Captain!

The farmer rushed through the stand tripping on air and stumbling face first.

Lono helps her up

Lono:What is it, what happened!

Toch: A few ship captains grew impatient, they wanted to plunder the Island , Nizax tried to stop him but then they called him a mud-man and it got worse.

Lono: Where is Nizax now?

Toch: He’s in the healer’s tent

The group rushed to the tent to see Nizax being attend to by several druids. His face has a large bruie on it.

Lono: Nizax!

Nizax: I’m sorry captain, we woculdnt stop all of them.

Lono; is anyone else hurt.

Nizax: Just me and Ailani, when I layed them out after they hit me their little baand scattered.

Ebbi: Where are they now?

With the Elder left to recover in th healer’s tent, Lono , Guret and Ebbi are brought to a hrorowing display by Toch
Roped up against a beach sapling, Ailani lays bloody in the sand. A bandage and poultice covers up one missing eye.

Guret: Well we know Nizax gives as good as they get.

Ailani: Do you hear yourself!? You are chasing a fantasy and leaving barbarians to lead us. You are just as much a traitor as the rest of them if you wont follow us!

Lono: How many left
Toch: About a dozen.

Guret: Let’s send a squad after them.

Lono: Agreed, I’ll tell my measurements to the navigators and prep teams

Who will lead the away teams (pick 3)

>Ebbi of the Illa Tribe, master druid with knowledge of woodland environments.

Lono:Toch, Guret you're with me. We have to form a squad to capture these rebels.

Ebbi: And me, Captain?

Lono: Stay here with Nizax and Kaipo and help them keep this fleet together.

Lono hands Ebbi the star chart measurements

Lono: Three squads are all we can spare right now.

Guret: How do you want to go about this?

(Choose three times. You may choose the same option more than once.)

>Hunting Squad
Warriors trained in tribal combat. Skilled in killing and not much else

Trackers and runners capable of navigating terrain relatively quickly, but without much solid combat abilities

Priests, historians, healers and artisans, vanguards of culture and diplomacy.

Lono:Assemble the diplomats then we'll have two squad of rangers to track them down.

Guret: You sure you don't wanna be more aggressive here?

Lono: These our are own people, Guret, we are here to spread peace, not violence.

The squads are assembled and the teams spread through the island. Nupuri runners and Illa druids work side by side to chart the paths.

Master Ahi diplomats debate with Chontou philosophers on the best way to convince the rebels to lay down arms.

And all the while the greatest minds of the sea calculate the mystery of the "not-Island."

In the hills at the center of the island, Toch meetss up with the Captain.

Toch: Captain, we found their trail

Lono: Let's get to it.

Soon the trail is found but as they get closer to its end, the tracking proves moot, the sounds of screms tell Lono the way.

They come to yet another clearing in the fields, this one larger, reminding Lono of the beggar camps he saw in Kutha Mardika.

The camp is about 30 large, various malnoursihed adults. A dozen warriors from the fleet are caught stealing what little food the natives had collected.

Lono: By the order of the great peace, stop!

Their apparent leader, Bopha of the Chontou Warrior caste stares at Lono

Bopha: You doom us all and you call it peace? Our people need to eat!

How does Lono respond?

>You don't need to do this, we'll be off this island soon.

Also, come on, imagine you were to switch places with these people. What would you think of the people stealing your food as you starved? Look at their ribs showing, their weakness... Then look me in the eye and tell me your hunger is greater than theirs. Are our people so weak?

No. No, our people, our honour, and our peace are stronger than this.
>>
>>5058213
Lono: You don't need to do this we'll be off the island soon. Look at them, is this peace? I this honor?

Several of the give looks of remorse and resistance.

Bopha: It's them or us Captain! I didn't get forced on a plank and set out to sea to starve here.

Iki, One of the diplomats walks up

Lono turns to the other rebels

Iki: There is no future in this path, you take their food and then what? Kill us? Live on this island? Try to sail away on your own? You have no other options, work with us and we can achieve peace in a New Land.

Several of the rebels lay down their arms and walk towards Lono's squads.

Bopha: No don't belive their lies.

Bopha raises a spear but it is knocked from his hand as Guret throws their own.

Guret: Next one goes for your head.

Bopha looks around, then kneels in surrender.

The ranger squad moves in, surrounding the rebels.

Guret: What do we do with them

Lono turns to Toch

Lono:Make sure these villagers are well fed. We may not be able to apologize , but we may be able to help them live to see freedom.

Lono moves back to the shore as Toch stays behind with the rangers.

At the Flet, Nizax stands with Kaipo and the other navigators.

Kaipo: I can’t believe it.
Nizax: I trust your maths, if it is so, it is so.
Lono walks in
Lono: What is so?
Kaipo: These charts, we have gone over the numbers countless times. They suggest aland mass southeast from here, but not an island. Its like their is a shore but then just more... land.
Lono: We live in strange times, can we reach it.
Kaipo: The charts suggest its 15 or 20 kilo ananas away. Whoever chose this island as a prison did not expect Ahi shipcrafters.
Lono: Prep the fleet to launch, we have to collect as many of these prisoners as possible.
Kaipo: Captain, with our limited food stores that may not be wise.
Tied up by Guret and several rangers, Bopha yells out.
Bopha: The Captain cares not for wisdom, he will doom us all to fed these savages.
Guret:Hold your tongue unless you want to be actually holding your tongue.
Kaipo: Bopha is crude and a traitor but look at the wisdom behind the anger. You promised to protect our Peace, not to serve these others?

Bopho:When we return home, The Island will know exactly what kind of man you are.

The rangers fanned out through the isle, collecting what supplies they could and offering food to those who they came across. Lono held back tears as they have to pick and choose who would go with them.

Lono grits his teeth and remembers the ideals of The Great Peace. He holds his hand outstretched and smiles at the Archer

Lono:Home.

The Archer doesn't understand the language but the meaning is clear. The Archer and Captain unite hands and the world is changed forever...

Back at the Fleet, Lono makes sure to have Th Archer on separate boats from the apparent village enemies. Bopho, has been demoted and is serving hard labor until a trial can be held.

Kaipo calculates the charts and with a mix of fear and awe, a course is marked and the fleet begins to march.

The Captain had met many struggles on this forsaken rock, but the challenges ahead would be nothing compared to what they would face in the new world...

End Chapter I

____________

Well thanks, folks for another Chapter completed. This one had some tests and turns and doing a bit of a genre shift was some new space to explore.

I will now have an intermission before we move onto Captainquest Chapter II, so I will open the floor this weekend to talking about the quests, the universe, the characters, and lore , as well as feedback and suggestions for the gameplay.

Thanks with sticking with it folks, and here's to the New World.

>>Captainquest
>Pro: Polynesian sailors on an Odyssey-style voyage through strange lands is a super cool starting premise for a quest, and I like it quite a bit so far! It’s an easy read to catch up on, too.
>Con: It may be a bit TOO easy of a read, with most of the story progressing through snippets of dialogue between characters I barely know anything about, referencing many rival factions I scarcely understand the relations between, in a setting that is quite vague. That could easily put people off who prefer more flowing, novel-style writing in their text-only quests.

Thank you for the feedback. I feel I leaned a bit too hard in lore development from it's prequel quest and while knowing that should enhance the experience it should not be required.

I also felt I should I avoided the character bloat. I was in scenarios where it didn't make sense for the same character to be doing a new role or action hit that led to a cast too large to engage with. I think I will stick close to a core group for Captain Quest 2
