Your name is Walter, a young man with living in the Isoin region. As you sit on the hill overlooking the small town named Cycad, you are once again reminded of your one goal: to leave your hostile hometown and explore the world in search of a place to belong, Even in such a dreary town as this you are alone and forgotten. To go out and make a new life for yourself would be a dream come true. Unfortunately, at your age, there aren’t many ways to accomplish such a dream. The idea of becoming a trainer was always floating around in the back of your mind but such a life is only reserved for those with either talent or a large amount of money. Most trainers don’t have what it takes and half of them don’t even make it past their fifth badge for various reasons. In fact, you tried to leave once but your journey was nerve-racking, draining, and ultimately short lived. You don’t know how you did it, but despite the starvation and exhaustion you somehow managed to find your way back home.

You tighten your grip around your one and only Pokeball while staring at the town below. You had one shot at life and here you are, a poor outcast who was abandoned by his father. Your life is in tatters and the only way out requires so much of you.

“No,” you proclaim as you stand up and look towards the horizon. “I won’t give up, not before I’ve even truly started. “

There’s still a chance for you to make it out, you just have to make the right moves. As you walk down the grassy hill, you go over your options. You can’t just strike out on your own without any money or a Pokemon, you’ve at least learned that much from your last attempt. However, you feel that the longer you take to prepare, the worse off things will be for you. In your experience, a plan is better when it has less moving pieces.

>Find a way to earn money in order to take the trainer’s exam

Against your better judgment, you decide to do things by the book. You’re well aware that this comes with it’s own pitfalls but at the very least, this road is the safest.

You spend the next hour walking around town looking for a place to work. You’ve been turned down for various reasons, some impersonal others not so much. For the most part however, the biggest issue you face is your age. Most people couldn’t imagine having a 14 year-old working at their stores. While it isn’t exactly illegal, it isn’t often that you see someone as young as yourself working an everyday job. After a few more rejections, you relent and come to the conclusion that you’ll need to make a more informal arrangement if you want some cash.

While you could work under the table to get what you need, you still want to get moving as quickly as possible. Maybe a one-time arrangement with a large reward could work. On the other hand, you could do things in an even more unconventional way.

>Look for a short-term arrangement

>Catch a Pokémon and start battling for money

By the time you make it towards the outskirts of town, evening begins to approach. As you gaze at the setting sun and stare at the clearing ahead of you, you begin to feel a small amount of panic. The last time you tried this you scarcely made it out alive.

“Alright,” you reassure yourself as you take a deep breath. “I can do this…I just need to come up with a plan this time and everything will be fine.”

Slowly and cautiously, you make your way through the clearing with your head on a swivel. You hear rustling in a large grouping of bushes and the cries of some unidentifiable birds but a Pokémon has yet to show itself. You travel deeper into the wilderness and after awhile, you begin to see a few Pokémon heading back to their respective nests and dens. A few hang around for a while however and they haven’t noticed you yet. As you survey the area, you narrow down your options to the few who aren’t traveling with a group.

>Go for the lone Sandshrew

“It’s not much but it will have to do.” You think to yourself as you slowly edge your way to the armored rodent. Glancing at it, the Sandshrew appears to be in the middle of digging a small hole. While it may be distracted, you aren’t fully confident in your ability to catch him without damaging it. The only issue with that is the fact that you would most likely have to fight it in order to capture it and despite its size, you know that it won’t be an easy victory. The only things you can find for to use as weapons here are small rocks and branches; you have a feeling it won’t be impressed with such an arsenal.

Alternatively you could simply wait for it to fall asleep. This could take awhile but you’re sure that your target won’t put up a fight if you try to catch it while it’s unconscious. As you weigh your options, you also get the idea of simply bringing it back home. That way you don’t have to worry about it getting away if your first attempt fails.

>Carry the Sandshrew home

As the Sandshrew continues to burrow, you slowly take off your backpack and unzip the main opening before approaching the hole as silently as possible. Right as you’re about to swoop in from behind, the shrew turns and the two of you stare at each other for what seems like minutes. Hyping yourself up with a yell, you leap towards the hole as quickly as you can. You wrestle with the Sandshrew on the ground for a few seconds with the bag almost acting as a barrier between you more than an actual net. Eventually, you overpower the surprisingly strong rodent and manage to trap him. Your prisoner doesn’t relent and begins to struggle as you take off towards the direction of Cycad Town.

As you tear across the clearing and back towards the outskirts of town, you hear the sound of material being shredded. The determined Sandshrew has begun clawing its way out of your bag! You panic and begin shouting again as you swing the bag over your head. With each rotation, you can feel the weight in the oversized bag shifts from one side to another and for a moment, the thrill of being engaged in this hunt fills you with a rush of excitement that you haven’t felt in years. Eventually however, your excitement is replace with exhaustion after a few minutes of this and by the time you get back into town you are sweating profusely and your arms as well as your legs are sore. Thankfully, your prisoner seems to be dazed by the event and is no longer struggling with as much vigor as before. After taking a short break to catch your breath, you make your way towards home with nothing but the moonlight and a few sparse streetlights to guide you.

When you return home, you use your key to open the door and head directly to your room. Once you step inside your room, you close and lock the door, before placing your bag on the floor. It is now time for the moment of truth.

Result: Monumental Pass

With one hand, you reach into your pocket and enlarge your sole Pokéball, you then unzip your bag with the other. As soon the bag is opened, the Sandshrew leaps out with its small, yet formidable claws aimed at your face! Time seems to slow to a crawl as you bring the Pokéball up and into the rodent’s flight path. Before it connects with your Pokéball, you see the Sandshrew’s eyes widen in surprise as it realizes its mistake before it is sucked in. Within an instant, the ball begins to rattle violently in your hands and in you in turn, begin to shake it, hoping to replicate the same success you had with the bag. To your surprise, it works and with a small hum, the ball becomes still. You’ve caught your first Pokémon and with that you’re one step closer to being able to chase your dreams!

>Armo
>Let it out to get acquainted

As you look at the weathered Pokéball in your hand, you consider giving it a name. After giving the matter some thought, you release your new partner and with a flash of light, the Sandshrew materializes on the floor. It gives you a brief look of annoyance before sniffing around your tiny room.

“Hey, um…Armo? We’re pals now right?”

“Armo” gives you another brief glance before climbing into your laundry bag. You walk over to the bag and watch as it burrows under you pile of dirty clothes.

“Look, I’m sorry for getting in the way of your sleep but we’re a team now. I’m sure you don’t plan on just digging holes for the rest of your life; together, we could really make something of ourselves.”

Armo’s reaction to your little speech is unreadable due to his current position but you want to make sure that things will work between you two. Though the Pokéball somehow keeps him from attacking you outright, you know that he still retains his own wants and opinions. Perhaps there is some way to get him to warm up to you, or at the very least engage with you in what counts for conversation between humans and Pokémon.

>Give him some food

You figure that giving Armo some sort of peace offering might bring him out from under your pile of shirts and decide to leave him to his own devices while you look for something in the fridge. As you approach the fridge, you suddenly remember that there is almost never food in there; after taking a quick look, your suspicions are confirmed. The refrigerator is practically barren, aside from beverages, condiments, and some suspicious looking cheese. You could look in the cupboards for some chips and other junk food as those never seem to be in short supply here but you aren’t sure if Armo will be receptive to those.

>Give Armo some chips

With a sigh, you grab on of the larger bags of chips from the cupboards and return to your room to find Armo tearing away at the remains of your bag. Seeing as he already damaged it on the way here and given the fact that it was in poor condition already, you let it go and offer Armo the bag.

“I brought you something,” you say as you crouch low to get closer to him. "It's not much, but it’s all I have and since we are a team now it’s yours too."

Armo stares at the bag for a moment before slicing it open and shoving his tiny paws into the opening. As he continues to feast on the contents of the bag, you kick off your shoes and flop down on your bed. It’s about 10:30 now and while you were never an early riser, you’ve found a new purpose. Maybe it’s time you used your waking hours wisely. As you contemplate your plan of action for the next day, you look over at Armo who is currently licking the remains of the bag. Once he recognizes that he’s being watched, he begins to make his way back to the hamper.

>Let Armo sleep in the hamper

You decide to let Armo do as he pleases and place your Pokéball on the floor. After a while, your new roommate curls up and stops moving having finally gotten into a comfortable position among this unfamiliar terrain. You decide that you may as well get some rest and roll over to turn off your lamp, the only source of light within the room. As darkness overtakes your world, your last thoughts are ones of both hope and anticipation.

You awaken the next morning to the sound of a loud alarm. You try to block out the noise but eventually you give in and turn over to squint at your alarm clock. 7:45 flashes on the old clock in bright red numbers as the alarm continues to ring. On a normal day you would be heading to school but this is not simply a normal day. Your time as an outcast trapped in his small world is over! Today is the day you reach out for greatness! As you spring up out of your bed to prepare for the day you almost trip over Armo who is busy playing around with his Pokéball, likely out of boredom. You give him a quick wave as you head to the bathroom to freshen up. After all of your business is taken care of, you exit your apartment and gaze upon the early morning sky. Yes, today will be a day you won’t soon forget.

>Head over to the trainer’s school in order to get some information

As you start your trek towards the trainer’s school you mentally prepare yourself for what is to come. “Don’t panic Walter, this won’t be like the last time. At the very least he won’t be there. Just keep it together.”

By the time you finish your impromptu therapy session, you have reached your destination. The building is large, flashy, and is probably the nicest looking one in town aside from the mayor’s house. Though it looks inviting, some of your most painful memories have been made in here but as you and Armo enter through the main doors, you push those memories aside. This is the final hurdle you must overcome before you can truly start living and you will not allow yourself to turn back now.

You approach the front desk to where a bored looking woman in her mid twenties is furiously typing. At first she doesn’t seem to notice you but right as you are about to clear your throat, she spins her chair abruptly and faces you with a serious look on her face.

“Hello.”

“Um, hey my name is Walter and-“

“Are you here for the training course or the test?” the receptionist interrupts while as she steals a glance at the monitor to her left. As you contemplate your answer, she looks you over and begins speaking again.

“You look like you’re here for the test, it’s much cheaper than the training.”

You do your best to ignore that comment as you look towards Armo for reassurance. To your horror, Armo seems to have run off and is nowhere to be seen at least from where you’re standing.

Though you are tempted to internally panic, you decide to play it cool and stick to the plan. “What’s the difference between the two in terms of price?” You ask as you try to subtly glance around the room once more.

The receptionist spins away from you and goes back to her typing. “The test is 5,000 P and the training course is 10,000 P,” she responds listlessly.

>Leave the desk and look for Armo

You stand at the desk for a few seconds as you puzzle out the most efficient way to come up with the money. Even 1,000 P is quite a lot for someone in your situation and with conventional jobs off the table, it seems that you’ll have to battle in order to make the payment. Before you can do that however, you need to find out where Armo ran off to. The receptionist once again turns to you and gives you another look, one that says it’s time for you to pay up or leave. As tempted as you are to tell her off, you contain yourself and offer up a half-hearted thank you as you walk away from the desk.

Now that you have the information that you need, it’s time to solve the mystery of the missing Armo. He could be anywhere within the building, or he could’ve even left on his own thanks to the automatic doors.

>Check the inside of the building

You know this building well enough to walk around without getting lost, Armo doesn’t however, and you don’t know Armo well enough to predict where he would go. You decide to check inside the classrooms first but find most of them empty with only two classes currently in session. You check bathrooms, storages closets and even poke around a few of the offices but you find nothing. Out of options, you decide to circle back to the foyer and enter the Testing Wing, otherwise know as “The Filter”.

With some hesitation, you walk to the T Wing of the building, the place where the final section of the trainer’s test is held, and the very same place where “The Incident” happened. You steel yourself as you walk past several locked rooms and come face to face with the entrance to the Battle Room. Stepping inside, you immediately see Armo who is digging a small hole on the sidelines of the field. Though you’re glad to have found him, who you see next evokes in you a sense of shame and embarrassment. Standing on the other side of the field is Aaron, your former instructor and battling him is your “rival”, Ivan. Within an instant, you begin to freeze up as your blood begins pumping much faster than it should be. You need to do something quickly before you fall apart.

>Use the Pokéball to recall Armo

You frantically dig your hand in your pocket and withdraw Armo’s ball. You then turn it towards the oblivious rodent and with the push of a button, you recall it with a red flash of light. Unfortunately this bright flash of light and the accompanying sound from results in drawing the attention of the two combatants.
“Walter?” Exclaims Aaron with a look of confusion on his face. Your eyes meet and Aaron’s confusion is replaced with concern. “Walter, what are you doing here?”

With a confused look of his own, Ivan turns towards you as well. If being in the presence of Aaron makes you feel shame, seeing Ivan draws out a deep-seated feeling of hatred, resentment, and as much as you hate to admit it, fear. Ivan recognizes all of these emotions and a cruel smirk makes its way across his lips.

“Yeah, Walter, what is a failure like you doing here? Once I cleared out all the gyms, I thought I wouldn’t need to put up with having scum like you in my presence. Oh well, that’s what I get for doing victory lap.” Ivan looks as if he is about to say more but after giving Aaron a quick glance, he decides against it.

“That being said, I should probably leave, I honestly don’t want to see just how much worse things have gotten for you, there’s only so much second hand embarrassment I can take.” With that, he takes out a Pokéball and points it at his partner.

” Luxray, return!”

Said Luxray lets out a snort as it vanishes before the red light draws him in and with that Ivan leaves through the side door near the row of bleachers.
“We’ll finish this later,” promises Ivan as he waves to Aaron before disappearing behind the door.

Once Ivan closes the door behind him the room becomes uncomfortably silent. Aaron moves to recall his Pokémon, a tough looking Zangoose who is also looking at you with some reservation. Before he can do so however, you turn and leave the room, and with a steady yet controlled pace, you make your way out of the Trainer’s School. “He got through all of the gyms? Has it really been that long? You continue your walk until you find a bench located under the shade of a tree. You take a seat and with shaky hands, pull out your Pokéball. “Can you really do this? Here?” You ask yourself. “It’s been over two years now and yet you still could hardly keep it together while you were in there.”

You’re tempted to just sit here and dwell on the past as you do everyday. You hate the fact that you do it, but your time in Trainer’s School affected you in so many ways. You can trace almost all of your problems to those three fateful weeks.

You rise from the bench and slowly make your way to the clearing. To say you’ve made a full recovery from the revelation you’ve made today would be a lie but there’s no way you’ll let a fee or someone like Ivan keep you down. You have a Pokémon now and with him, you have what you need to succeed. You’ve made your choice and you are going to stick to it! As you get closer to your destination, you let Armo out and place him in your torn backpack so that he won’t run off so easily. A strong wind passes overhead as you make your way into the woods and out of the clearing.

Now that you’ve reached your destination, it’s time for the training to begin. You don’t exactly know what Armo is capable of but you know that Scratch and Defense Curl are on the table if nothing else.

Result: Rattata encounter x2

As you continue to plod through the woods, you feel as if you are being watched. Armo confirms your suspicions when he leaps out of your bag and plummets to the ground. He then lands on his feet and flings a wave of sand towards a bush on your left. In response, two Rattatas emerge from their hiding place and bare their teeth at both you and your insolent partner. This is the chance for the both of you to show each other what you’re really about!

“Keep on your guard, Armo!” You call out as the two rats begin to circle him.

Armo rapidly switches focus between each Rattata as they begin to close in. Every time they attempt to attack, he meets their charge, prompting them to step back. This dance goes on for a while until their superior numbers eventually get the best of Armo and they both close in for an attack. The first Rattata takes a leap at Armo and crashes into him, pushing him back and almost knocking him prone. Armo manages to recover only to be struck by the tail of the second Rattata. Though this has seemingly no affect on him, it draws his attention away from the first Rattata setting him up for another tackle attempt.

You realize that you can’t just sit and watch as these rats gang up on Armo, the time for action is now! You quickly locate a fallen branch and charge at one of the Rattatas with a frankly unimpressive battle cry. Maybe once puberty kicks into high gear you’ll sound more threatening. Either way, your intervention breaks up the scuffle and soon you find yourself squaring off with the Rattata who tried distracting Armo. As soon as you make a move to strike him, he bolts off almost too quickly for you to react. Before you can process the rat's sudden disappearance, he circles around and charges at you with a white outline trailing him. By some miracle you react in time and strike your foe as one would a baseball, snapping your makeshift weapon in two and rendering the reckless Rattata unconscious in the process.

You then turn your attention to Armo who is still doing battle with the Rattata who struck him. The two rodents are fighting savagely with the most interesting exchange coming from a clash between Armo’s claws and the Rattata’s tail. Ultimately however, Armo is slowly but surely coming out on top.

At the sound of your voice, Armo disengages from the enemy and pulls his arm back in order to deliver a devastating attack. The Rattata meets the challenge and charges at Armo headfirst. Much like the Rattata you took on earlier, this one made the mistake of jumping right into an oncoming attack and he pays the price as Armo’s attack connects and send him crashing to the ground. A quick look informs you that neither of your foes will be getting up anytime soon and with a victory under your belt, you feel more determined than ever. At this rate, you’ll be out of Cycad Town within a few weeks! For now however, you still have a few hours before it gets dark.

>Find a trainer to battle

Feeling a bit more at ease after your first victory, you decide to push the boundaries and head in the direction of Route 3. After a short walk you have officially left Cycad Town and find your self on the road to the next town. You won’t be going that far of course, but this brief trip is simply another stepping-stone to freedom. Armo on the other hand doesn’t seem as excited as you are but if you lived in the wilderness all your life, Route 3 wouldn’t seem very significant to you either.

Much like the scenery, the Pokémon you spot during your walk aren’t too special but after awhile you find what you’re looking for. In the distance, you spot a stationary young boy wearing a bright blue hat. He seems to be taking a break from traveling and is currently slouching underneath a tree. He’s most likely starting his journey which means there’s a good chance that you’re roughly around his level.

>Walk by him

You decide that the boy isn’t worth your time and stay on the path. As you make your way further down Route 3, you take notice of a several more travelers though they don’t seem to be trainers. Many of them simply seem to be out for a stroll and would have no interest in engaging in a battle. Once again, Armo starts to become restless just sitting there in the tattered remains of your bag and he seems to be pretty hungry as well. The farther you walk, the hungrier you become as well as a result of skipping lunch and by extension, school. Still, you march on, using the fumes from your latest accomplishments to fuel you

Before you know it, the sun has begun to set and you find yourself on the outskirts of Marlan Town. By now your stomach has begun protesting and Armo is trying to get your attention by causing a ruckus in the bag. A return trip back home is doable and probably for the best considering how you just took off. If you hurry, you could still make it back before your mom gets home. On the other hand, it’s getting dark and you know that the only thing waiting for you at home is more junk food.

You determine that going into a new town at with and with little to no money isn’t something that appeals to you so you call it a day and make camp a little ways off the path. Without any way to start a fire naturally or otherwise, you need to act quickly and find some secluded area to use as a shelter. The threat of the elements and wild Pokémon aren’t the only issues looming over your head, you and Armo still need food. As the sun abandons you, you come to the realization that you must arrange your priorities before moving further.

“Ok Armo, let’s find something to eat.” You prompt as you look down upon his idle form. It may have been the darkness or the natural ambiguity of his facial expressions, but for a moment you could have sworn he had given you an incredulous look.

You decide to ignore the hindsight-bound Sandshrew and begin rummaging through some bushes in order to find some suitable berries to feast upon. Thankfully, your time in Trainer’s School wasn’t a complete waste of time and you are able to pick out which ones are safe to consume though the darkness that surrounds you makes this more difficult than it would usually be.

When you return to your temporary campsite, you find Armo, munching on several Weedle that he managed to capture. The both of you eat in silence for a bit but your hastily put together meal is interrupted by the sound of footsteps. You can’t determine how many there are but you know that they are headed in your direction.

As the footstep get closer, you signal Armo to stand by for battle with your hand. Whether he or not he understood your signal is debatable and so you take up arms in the form of a few small rocks which dot the ground. The two of you stand firm in a tense standoff with the unknown, until it reveals itself to be a frantic Teddiursa followed by an equally spooked Seedot. The pair blow right past you, trampling your dinner in the process.

For a brief second, Armo looks confused before shrugging it all off and attempting to salvage what is left of his meal. Though the pair caught you off guard, you follow Armo’s lead sit back down. Your respite only lasts a few seconds before several Hoothoots go flying overhead. Now you know something is off but the source of the panic could be anyone’s guess.

>Pack up and follow the fleeing Pokémon

After weighing your options, you decide to follow the retreating figures. You have no idea where they’re going but you figure that if nothing else there is safety in numbers. As you grab your bag and get up Armo suddenly snaps into a rigid position and begins to shake.

“What’s wrong?” You ask, somewhat unlevered by his sudden shift in demeanor.

Armo does not respond, verbally at least. He quickly runs up to you, taps your shoe and begins running away on all fours. Though you had already made your mind up to leave, Armo’s simple message amplifies the sense of impending doom that you were suppressing. You stumble in the darkness after Armo, who seems to have no issue maneuvering through the night. Such advanced eyesight was not granted to your species and as a result, you end up tripping over roots, running headlong into low hanging branches and narrowly avoid colliding with trees. Eventually your frantic marathon ends as you come across a river. It seems as if many of the fleeing Pokémon converged on this spot but some of the figures you spotted earlier are missing. The Teddiursa and the Seedot before however, are here and they seem to be conversing.

“Hey guys, I know you don’t know me but Armo and I could use your help,” you explain as you gesture to Armo who has busied himself with digging a hole.

The pair you addressed give you a quizzical look as do the rest of the surrounding Pokémon. Thankfully they don’t seem hostile either because they don’t view you as a threat, or because metaphorically speaking, they have bigger fish to fry. The magnitude of said fish begins to dawn on you as you feel an unmistakable rumbling under you feet.

Do we need to pick the predetermined choices or can we suggest other ones?
If we can suggest I say:
>Help Arno dig a hole
We can help Arno make a hole big enough to trap whatever is coming behind us this might give us enough time to run away, we can even try to ask Teddiursa and seedot for help, both of them can learn Dig so it might be viable if they follow Arno's example.

If no suggestion then:

Running alongside the river seems best than trying our luck against the river or against an undiscovered danger.

Rolled: 34, 58, 83
Result(s): Monumental Failure, Success, Success

As the rumbling gets closer and more intense, you turn to all of the Pokémon that surround you and attempt to rally them.

“Alright everyone, I don’t know what’s chasing you down, but this is your home! If we all work together we can defend it stop whatever comes our way! If we follow Armo’s lead we might be able to gain the advantage.”

Despite how nervous your voice sounds you can tell that most of the crowd understood the gist of your speech and are convinced. Teddiursa, however seems to have its own way of dealing with this unknown threat and with a cute roar, goes charging into the danger zone. None of the surrounding Pokémon seem surprised in the slightest by its actions and get to work digging holes. Time flies quickly and soon, holes of various width and depth dot the landscape. As you finish digging your own hole, you hear the sounds of a cry of both fear and excitement. As you look over to the tree line, you see Teddiursa quickly approaching and it seems to be holding onto a slender, finlike stone which is currently tearing through the earth below. As you stand, so does the fin and soon a large stone creature resembling a snake bursts from the ground.

“Oh, no.” You say as you feel your legs beginning to shake. Though you’ve only seen an Onix on TV, you heard enough stories know what it’s capable of and that coming across an aggressive Onix as a rookie trainer usually spells death.

Before you can even consider a course of action, two more towering Onix appear and they look just as angry and intimidating as the first.

To settle wether Sand Attack would work on an Onix, I had to do some research and reach a little. According to the Pokédex, an Onix relies on some sort of magnet within its brain to maneuver underground. It's also likely that it has an incredible sense of touch so I assume that while tunneling, an Onix will keep its eyes closed and rely on its other senses and brain magnet. I'm almost certain that they can see in the dark and uses its eyes when going through tunnels that have already been dug. In this case, Sand Attack works as an irritant and without being able to rely on its eyesight in a fight, the group of Onix will default to their other senses which don't provide very detailed information.

In short, I'll allow Sand Attack to work as usual on the condition that you can find a way to make the sand reach the their eyes.
>>
>>4114902
Are there any bird pokemon there? They could gather sand in their talons and drop it from above.

Since we're basically locked into Sand Attack and rallying the Pokémon, roll 2d100. The first one is for Sand Attack and if you pass, I'll get the sand where it needs to be. The second roll, by process of elimination is for getting the Pokémon to attack.Since you aren't directly attacking, all you need to do is pass the DCs.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who thought of using Armo as a projectile. To answer your question, yes you can throw him but getting Armo up to around 28'10 or 8.8 m isn't likely. You would have to lure the Onix down to your level or you could simply throw him while they're attacking.

By some miracle you manage to swallow your fear, maybe you’re still riding high from how far you’ve come, or maybe it’s because you have a small army behind you. Whatever the case may be, you’re ready for a fight.

“Let’s go Armo!” You call out. At the sound of your voice, Armo pops out of his hole and flings some debris at the center Onix. The attack falls a bit short however but your allies make up for this by charging en masse.

What comes next can only be described as chaos. Pokémon of all shapes and sizes surround the three rocky serpents and attack however they can. Many use their claws, some use their teeth, others utilize their talons, a few brave souls simply slam their bodies into the behemoths. In retaliation, the terror trio begin thrashing about attempting to shake off their attackers. This provides Armo a chance for redemption, which he happily takes by blasting a lowered Onix with the contents of the earth. Though none of these actions seem to have done any noticeable damage, you can now focus on dealing with one Onix instead of three. The situation isn’t ideal but it could be worse.

I don't think brute-forcing the lads is going to work unless we tried to rip the other's ones eyes out, at this point irritating the Onix to the point they give up is really the only juncture now that we've ensured peace was never an option.

As the brawl rages on you realize that you and Armo have been sitting on the sidelines for the most part. Wanting to aid in the battle, you pick up Armo without warning and take a running start before hurling him at the center Onix. The Onix is busy trying to get rid of its unwelcomed rider and is unprepared for Armo colliding with it. Based on the look Armo gives you, he wasn’t ready for it either but he soldiers on and attempts to scale the Onix in order to attack its head.

As the bear and rodent rain blows on its head, something clicks in the mind of the center Onix who turns its attention to you. From the look on its face, you can tell that it views you as the ringleader of this whole mess and begins to slither in you direction. Despite its size, the Onix is deceptively fast and you barely manage to get out of the way of its first attack. It won’t slow down anytime soon from the looks of things.

Rolled: 55
Result(s): Great Failure

Thinking quickly, you attempt to guide the Onix towards one of its partners in crime in the hopes that you could get one to collide with the other. Unfortunately, its speed proves far superior to yours and before you can get halfway to your destination, the Onix approaches from behind and bowls you over. You go airborne for a few seconds before crashing back into the dirt and you feel as if you got the wind knocked out of you. The Onix is not done however, and turn around to make another pass, ignoring the attacks on its head despite their increased in intensity. You curl up and prepare to embrace your impending doom as your pathetic life flashes before your eyes.

Before you can begin to regret ever decision you’ve ever made, you hear the sound of a great impact, a squeak, and a mighty crash. This cacophony is followed by a large gust of wind which blows past you. For a moment you lie there in the dirt in shock from both your injuries and the fact that you’re still alive. In order to confirm your suspicions, you cram your neck to look up in the direction of the sounds. Once things come back into focus, you see Armo lying on the ground as an orange glow fades from his body. A few feet away from him sits a very hurt looking Onix lying on its side. Teddiursa seems to have fallen off as a result of whatever it is that just transpired.

>Crawl to Armo

As you look over at the downed Onix two things hit you. Firstly the pain from your fall has finally registered and secondly, Armo may have what it takes to finish this fight. Doing your best to block out the pain you being slowly crawling to Armo who is now back on his feet. Though he looks weary it’s obvious that he still has some fight left in him. Upon seeing your attempts to approach him, Armo meets you halfway much to your relief.

Unfortunately, Armo isn’t the only one who is still prepared to fight. Before you can say anything to him, the Onix gets back up with a tremendous, gritty roar and within no time appears in front of you again To say it was angry wouldn’t be accurate, if anything it seemed offended. Even to you, the idea that Armo could cause such damage to these seemingly invulnerable serpents seems absurd but you’re far more concerned with survival at the moment.

To your surprise, the Onix doesn’t immediately crush you and your partner; instead it focuses its gaze on its own allies who seem to have been significantly worn down. Through the efforts of your determined mob, the towering snakes are now on the proverbial back foot and it seems as if the battle is close to being won. Upon seeing the state of its group, the Onix turns back to you with renewed fury, and is prepared to come at you with everything it has left.

>Have Armo defend (/???/)

As you stare down the Onix, with Armo by your side, you realize that you have already won. Sure your body may feel like nothing more than a bag containing loose puzzle pieces, but you now understand what it is that Armo did to protect you. With this knowledge, you will ensure that the strength of this monstrous Onix shall be its downfall. You flash the beast a devilish smile, as if begging it to do its worst and in turn, the Onix responds with a swing from its mighty tail.

“Armo! Use Counter!”

In response, Armo nods and stands in front of the attack, his body exuding a bright flash of orange light as the devastating blow connects. Dirt is sent flying and another gust of wind sweeps over the battlefield. Once the dust clears however, Armo is still standing there, coated in the mysterious orange aura. The Onix, now absolutely livid, rears back for another swing, only to stop dead in its tracks as the curled up form of Armo slams into its head at blinding speed. Unlike the initial collision between the two however, this attack does not simply leaves the Onix dazed, but instead causes its entire body to snap back violently as Armo’s armored form ricochets off of it. Once again, the Onix crashes to the ground and this time, it stays down without so much as even a groan.

As Armo stands over his fallen enemy, the orange aura evaporates off of his body like a cloud of vapor and disappears into the night sky. He then steps onto one of the segments and gives it a tap. Upon confirming his victory, Armo limps over to your broken form and sits down in the small crater created when he was slammed into the ground.

“Great job Armo, I’m sure that Onix will think twice before it messes with the king of the ground types!” You say, giving him a shaky thumbs up.

Due to his inferior amount of digits, Armo can only offer up a crude imitation of your gesture in response but the intent is clear.

Once again, you cram your neck to observe the aftermath of the battle. The woodland creatures stand triumphantly over the unconscious forms of their foes, and though a few are looking a bit damaged, you have all come out as the clear victors. Their excitement and relief are soon replaced however, with confusion as all three Onix disappear in a flash of red light. Despite the combined efforts of the flabbergasted mob, they cannot seem to find the source of the light or the disappearances.

Eventually everything settles down, and after conducting some idle conversation which is lost on you, the crowd disperses and begin to make their ways back to their nests, burrows, and various dwellings. Only a few stragglers remain, most notably the Teddiursa and Seedot who look very proud of themselves.

As the QM I roll for things that aren't in your control. Nothing you could do in-character would directly sway them either way as they are free to make that decisions for themselves. As a result, I simply rolled to simulate their autonomy. Generally speaking, I'll have you roll when dealing with the actions you take or the success of your Pokémon in battle.

In this particular situation, having you all roll would cause varying and opposing results. I could go with the "first come first served" approach but that doesn't really sit right with me. I'll hold off on writing for now as I'm willing to listen to any counter arguments.

When I was creating this scale, I was thinking in terms of probability not performance. If this were a typical situation, I would have placed the more positive outcomes at the very end of the scale but in this case, I simple viewed each number as a percentage with you having a 70% chance of recruiting at least one of them.
>>
>>4116933
DCs are always a matter of both, though. They always involve probability and performance. What makes this situation different, that would require a different perspective? If we were trying to catch a Pokemon, would you bury the chance of successfully catching them in the range of 55-70? We're trying to recruit two Pokemon. There possible outcomes are neither join, one joins, the other joins, and both join. In what way is that not a clear order of win conditions, that clearly reflects better chances to succeed? Even if you're not going to make it 2d100 like the rest of the rolls have been, with each Pokemon having a separate DC, why shuffle the chances around like a deck of cards.

And, yeah, like >>4116930 said. We can try to influence them into joining us beyond "You wanna' come with?". Teddiursa seems proud and combative, we could have presented a pitch that appealed to that. "If you come with us, you'll have lots of opportunities to get stronger and prove your might, what do you say?" or something to that effect.
>>
>>4116899
Man, we got like 2 CHA.
>>
>>4116933
So I just got here but I wanna throw my two cents in. My only real problem with this is that we just prevailed in a pretty bad situation and I feel like we're getting punished for rolling perfectly afterwards. Doesn't make more sense for a 10 to be the magic number for them both joining? Don't wanna come off as whiny but it feels pretty shit. I like what you've done so far though so I won't bitch about it further.
>>
>>4116951
>DCs are always a matter of both, though. They always involve probability and performance. What makes this situation different, that would require a different perspective?

You're point is sound but reversing the what constitutes success doesn't change your actual chances. If for example. we were in a situation where I had set success at 50+ or tied it to landing on an odd number, would your chance change? It's still a 50/50 chance either way. The outcome may change but the possibilities remain the same.

>If we were trying to catch a Pokemon, would you bury the chance of successfully catching them in the range of 55-70?

That would depend on what questions are being asked. Are we assuming that your throw will automatically be accurate and that you won't overshoot your target? Are we assuming that the Pokémon won't bat the ball away? Generally I wouldn't ask such questions when choosing the DC but there will be some occasions when rolling higher doesn't always guarantee success.

As I said before, the frame work of chance never changes. The order I chose didn't have any significance behind it. It only looks as if things were fundamentally changed when I used a different system.

>>4116952
This is true in a narrative sense but I didn't factor in charisma when I made the scale. If I did, the chances for recruiting either of them would have been well below 70%

>>4116960
Technically, within the parameters of the scale, 10 isn't a perfect roll. As I said before, the best way to understand this is to separate the foundation and the outcome. Don't feel as if you're pushing the envelope, I understand that this was a rather unorthodox way of handling things.

>>4116930
>>4116951
>I would say that we should roll for persuasion since we are asking/trying to convince them to join us.

In the short term, rolling for persuasion would greatly lower your chances given that this statement >>4116952 has some truth to it. In the longterm, doing this will require me to set up stats for the MC and other humans. Truthfully, I'm not totally prepared to add another facet to the game mechanics.
>>
>>4116981
That being said, if all of you really want a roll for persuasion, I can oblige but it will take some time for me to puzzle out a stat system for the MC and to figure out how and when to properly implement it. In addition, your chances for failure will skyrocket.
>>
>>4116983
Just keep it as is. There are plenty of other pokemon out there.
>>
>>4116983
Usually when the mc of a pokemon quest has stats it tends to be in the most vague way possible, at least from what I remember from Urban Quest (pls come back Medi). It was something like "you have below average strength, hitting something has high dc" "you got bad people skills but you are pretty good with pokemon"
So you can make something simple and it'll probably work just fine.

>>
>>4116981
I understand that organizing the numbers in a particular way doesn't change the outcome. I'm not suggesting otherwise. What I'm suggesting is that the general framework of dicerolls is, the higher a number you roll, the better you did, and the lower you roll, the worse you did. Whether you want to interpret getting a 14 when the DC is a 15 as a near-success or just as abject a failure as a 4, tabletop systems, and indeed this system, operate using that basic principle unless inverted or stated otherwise. You've been operating under this formula the entire quest, up until now, for no apparent reason. Shuffling the probabilities doesn't change our chances, but it is a generally confounding choice, and made for an extremely shitty realization: I saw "roll1d10: 10" and thought, "oh, hell yes, critical success," and then I read and found out for some baffling reason that that's the worst possible thing to roll. If a player at a tabletop game rolls a d20 for a special situation, and gets a 20, and then the DM says that not only is it not a crit, but it's an abject failure, that's incredibly shitty.

The fact that you are suggesting that a DC would be a specific range, and that getting above that range rather below would result in a failure, or perhaps an "oversuccess", is extremely worrying and counterintuitive. It goes against what has been established so far both in the quest and in tabletop in general.

>>4117039
Okay so aside from two very explicit instances of that happening that you're discarding because you feel like it, and aside from the fact that you're ignoring any media other than the games even though the nature of this quest is more akin to the anime, there's the entirety of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. Pokemon Conquest. Pokemon Rangers. The Kanto starters in Yellow. The starters in SM choose to go with you, to an extent. The Zorua from BW, if you have a special Celebi.

>Mention one time in the games where you do that. The Lucario in XY and Lati in ORAS are bullshit and don't count.

I'll admit, if I were playing this quest, I would've been taken aback as well but as we've established, this is mostly a cosmetic issue.

>The fact that you are suggesting that a DC would be a specific range, and that getting above that range rather below would result in a failure, or perhaps an "oversuccess", is extremely worrying and counterintuitive. It goes against what has been established so far both in the quest and in tabletop in general.

This is the first thread, and we haven't covered all of the possibilities yet. So far we've only had to roll for the success of a Pokéball and for battling. Expectations have their place but you shouldn't hold onto them so tightly this early in the game.

Gimmick add-on, but okay.
See, the times you can do it are just very sparse special occasions and Pokewalker, that got used one generation and that's about it. Befriending random critters doesn't really match the spirit of becoming champion out of your pure effort, wit and patience.

Conquest is the same universe, just back in the past before Pokeball. It's how Pokemon were caught prior to Apricorn Balls. The Zorua doesn't have a trainer, it was pretending to be a human boy. When it transforms, the woman standing next to him is surprised, she had no idea. She's just there for narration purposes. In SM, you choose your starter, and then your starter decides to go with you. Also Poke Pelago has Pokemon decide to join you.

Understand that the games are limited in their scope based on mechanics, and certain ideas cannot be conveyed fully.

>Attempt to recruit Teddiursa and Seedot

Rolled: 10 (AC)
Result: Failure

With great effort, you turn yourself over to face the proud pair. Though you didn’t really get to see them in action, you figure that having these two on your side would make things a lot easier.

“Congratulations on the victory guys, this couldn’t have happened without you.”

While Seedot basks in the praise, Teddiursa rummages through a few bushes and returns with several large Oran berries. You graciously accept them and after you eat them you regain the ability to sit up. Though the pain is still there, you should be able to walk.

“Thanks. You know, Armo and I could really use your help. With your bravery and skills we might be able to become champions!” The two look at you skeptically; it’s hard to tell whether they don’t understand you or don’t believe you. “Even if it never happens, I think the four of us would work really well together.” You say attempting to sound as convincing as possible.

The duo deliberates for a few seconds and Teddiursa leaves again. This time it returns with a dirt covered Pokéball and places it down in front of you. After giving you a short nod, Teddiursa walks away for the final time with Seedot following closely behind. Not long after they leave, the other stragglers begin to disperse and soon, it’s just you and Armo sitting by the river. As you clean off the ball in the water, Armo nestles deeply into his crater and curls up to rest.

After cleaning the ball, you place it in your torn up bag and approach the crater. Bending down, you tap Armo on the back and he unfurls, giving you a tired look with a hint of annoyance.

“Sorry Armo, but we probably shouldn’t stick around here. If it makes you feel any better, you can sleep in my bag on the way back to Route 3.”

You can tell that Armo finds little solace in your offer but the prospect of staying by a gives him enough incentive to relent. Once again, you stumble your way through the woods though at a much slower pace. By now your pain has subsided to a dull ache but it is still annoying nonetheless.

As you walk, you reflect on the Onix rampage and the events that occurred after it. Though at first you play with the idea of it being a targeted attack, you let it go as the reality of your situation catches up with you again. You may be somewhat infamous in Cycad Town, but when it comes down to it, you’re effectively a nobody. You try to think back on any strange occurrences that you’ve seen on the news recently but draw a blank. As far as you can tell this was an isolated event not connected to anything you’ve heard of in the past. Still, the idea of someone going around perpetuating controlled rampages unnerves you.
After a while, your nature hike comes to an end and you find yourself once again on the edge of Marlan Town. This time, you do not stop and soon find yourself in the town proper. You’ve never been here before but one thing is certain; you need to find a place to spend the rest of the night.

>Go to the Pokémon Center

First things first, you need to get Armo to a Pokémon Center. He may have come out on top in his battle, but he took a beating to get the win. As you walk through the lamp lit streets with Armo, you feel an odd sense of accomplishment. Though this isn’t how you envisioned things going when you first dreamt of being a trainer, something about this feels right. You’ve finally left Cycad and you have your very own Pokémon. If the you of two years ago could see you now, he’d probably feel proud. As soon as this thought crosses your mind, you wonder what your parents would think about your recent escapades. Once you approach the Pokémon Center, all of these thoughts melt away as the cool breeze of an air-conditioned building hits your face. Wasting no time, you go up to the front desk and address the receptionist.

“Hello, I need to get my Sandshrew some help as quickly as possible,” you say as you pull Armo’s sleeping form out of your bag after a bit of struggling.

“You have a Pokéball for him, correct?” Inquires the receptionist.

“Right,” You respond as you bring it out and recall Armo.. “Here you go.”

Before you can hand over the ball, the receptionist stops you. “I’ll need you to fill out this short form before I can do anything,” She states as she hands you a single sheet of paper.

As you fill out the form, you here a small chime as another person arrives. You don’t pay them any mind however and after finishing the form, you address the receptionist again.

“While I’m at it, could I also get a room here? It’s too late for me to get back home and I don’t have enough to stay in a hotel.”

The receptionist takes Armo’s ball and puts it on a mostly empty tray containing a few other Pokéballs then turns back to you. “Well since you aren’t an official trainer, a night’s stay here will cost you 500 P.”

“500?!” You exclaim in disbelief. You then begin kicking yourself internally as you recall one of the many perks of having a trainer card.

The new arrival shares your frustration. “How do you think these places pay the bills? The league doesn’t pay for everything you know.” The distinctly feminine voice behind you seems both baffled and annoyed by your temporary bout of ignorance.

“Jordan? Back already I see. How did it go?” Asks the receptionist

The voice known as Jordan appears beside you and with a sigh, props an elbow on the desk. “It…went.” She replies with twinge of embarrassment.

“Don’t feel too bad, I’m sure you’ll get him next time,” assures the receptionist.

“It doesn’t really matter. If one of us wins we both win. Still I was sure I had him this time around.”

You can already see where this is going, but your inner busybody is flaring up.

>Eavesdrop in plain sight

You aren’t exactly the emperor of eavesdropping, but if you’re being phased out of the conversation you figure you might as well get something out of it. Keeping silent, you lean on the desk and listen in.

“You’ll beat him eventually, but why not save him for later? He isn’t the only Gym Leader in the region you know.”

Jordan lets out a sigh, “It doesn’t matter when I challenge him. It’s not that I can’t beat his Pokémon; I just can’t beat his strategy. No matter what level you challenge him at, he always fights as if he’s challenging the Champion himself.”

“Your brother’s a determined one that’s for sure and it doesn’t help that dealing with poison types is always tricky, I’ve seen some of the best trainers walk in here having had their entire team taken out by only a handful of them.” As she speaks, the receptionist’s voice takes on a tired tone. “I remember back when I was an active trainer too, I always avoided poison types Pokémon whenever I could. What with Vernon becoming a Gym Leader, I’d say I got out at just the right time.”

“Funny how that works,” says Jordan. “Oh yeah, I almost forgot.” She then takes out three Pokéballs and lays them on the desk. “I did a little training on my way back so my team and I could use a rest.”

>But into the conversation

Now that you have a lead you can dig a little deeper. Even if you aren’t an “official trainer” yet, you won’t pass up an opportunity to get some information on a Gym Leader.

“But I’ll need an opener first, something to get my foot in the door before going straight to the point.” You think to yourself as the conversation continues in the background. Then it hits you; your encounter with the three Onix should be perfect for this situation.

“I just got through a pretty crazy training session myself,” you begin, putting yourself back into the forefront. To your dismay, neither Jordan, nor the receptionist look too interested in your story and seem much more concerned with the fact that you interrupted them. The hypocrisy is not lost on you.

“You have one Pokémon and aren’t even a real trainer. Fighting a off a few Spearows isn’t exactly my idea of ‘crazy’.” Jordan says with a dismissive tone.

Perfect, she’s fallen into my trap. With her expectations this low, my tale is bound to make an impression. Now the only question is how to deliver it.”

They looked down on you. They all looked down on you, but now you will blow them away with your tale of courage and leadership. Today, Walter reigns supreme!

“People like me don’t need cards and badges to be great trainers. In fact I’ve seen more action today than you’ve seen in your entire career as a trainer. Only someone such as myself could have survived the challenges I went up against.” Your voice is practically dripping with arrogance and superiority. It isn’t often that you have a chance to brag and you’re going to enjoy ever second of it.

“Oh really,” Says Jordan with an equally smug tone. “Let me guess, you ran into a member of Team Offset and after chasing him off, you feel like some big shot?” For a brief second you are somewhat unnerved by the accuracy of that statement. You aren’t exactly sure who were controlling the group of Onix but Team Offset would be a prime suspect if anyone were to actually look into the matter.
Shrugging off these thoughts, you compose yourself and get back into showoff mode. “You will wish it were that mundane once I finish my story.” You respond putting an emphasis on the word ‘finish’.

“Well let’s here it then,” prompts the receptionist.

“It all started only a few hours ago,” you begin. “I had just finished my training session and had decided to camp out on Route 3 for the night. When my partner and I had set up camp however, a stampede of Pokémon great and small rushed past us in an attempt to run from an unknown disturbance. Seeing that those poor creatures needed my help, I sprang into action and followed them to a river. When I got there, I saw scores of terrified Pokémon cowering in various holes they dug for themselves as if they were waiting for death to claim them. I however, would not allow them to give up and with a rousing speech I gave them the courage to stand their ground and fight for the sanctity of their home.” You stop for dramatic effect and prepare to deliver the coup de grâce.

“Mere moments after mobilizing my emboldened force, I felt a rumbling under my feet which rivaled that of an earthquake and out from the ground sprang over a dozen Onix! As I gazed into their eyes, I nothing but a lust for violence, still, none of them were as disturbing or a fearsome as their leader. He was much larger than the others but what truly set him apart was that he was imbued fire! Though the stakes were high and the odds were against us, I was undeterred and lead the charge against the serpents. The battle was fierce and horrific with countless Pokémon falling on either side. Even I took part in the fight despite the great physical disadvantage I was at.” With the stage now set for the climactic finale, you lean up from the desk and stand straight up, facing your audience.

cont.
>>
>>4119278
“Near the end, most of my allies had fallen and the enemy was on its last legs as well. I was injured by the leader during the battle and was at his mercy. Though I fought as hard as I could, no human could ever hope to stand against an Onix. Just when it looked like all was lost, Armo, my partner and close friend stepped in to protect me. Using Counter, he took the blow that was meant for me and in a great display of strength retaliated with an attack the dwarfed that of the Onix with its sheer power. With one final strike, Armo sent the Onix hurtling into the river, extinguishing its flames and sending it to meet its fate in the depths of the river. Once the battle was over with my force emerging victorious, I left my new friends which I had commanded throughout the battle. Though I am no longer with them, I know that my spirit of bravery and determination will inspire generations of Pokémon throughout Route 3. My name will live on and this great battle shall never be forgotten.” As you conclude your rousing speech, a look of recollection appears on the face of the receptionist.

“You know, I’ve actually heard a similar story before.”

Jordan gives the receptionist an incredulous look that would rival those of Armo himself. “I can’t believe that you think this brat actually fought a flaming Onix.”

“I’ll admit that some parts sound a bit..farfetched, but there have been legends of Pokémon developing another typing within their lifetimes.”

“See?” You chime in. “I having the backing of an expert here.” If you could see the look on your face, it would probably remind you of Ivan’s.

“That’s just evolution!” Jordan retorts, clearly believing none of it. “Onix evolves into Steelix and that’s it! They can’t even use fire type moves!”

“They can us Sunny Day.” Corrects the receptionist.

“Checkmate,” You exclaim. “And here I thought you were a real trainer. Clearly, that fancy trainer card of yours didn’t prepare you for an interaction with some one as skilled and knowledgeable as myself.”

You can tell that Jordan has had enough of your showboating while the receptionist seems to be amused by your antics.

>Double down while shifting the topic to defeating Vernon

With how eager Jordan is to put you in your place, you figure she’d take great pleasure in setting you straight. If you bring up Vernon now, she’s likely to illustrate just what kind of a Gym Leader he is.

“If you’re really this green, I’m pretty sure that your brother’s ‘superior tactics’ are nothing to write home about. If anything, you’re probably just a mediocre trainer. “ As you say this, Jordan’s stare increases in intensity but you have no intention of backing down now.

“If we battle on an even playing field, I would sweep his team and take that badge from him within minutes.”
“If you think a type advantage is enough to beat him you’re more stupid than you look.” Now Jordan is approaching your level of arrogance. “You could have a team full of ground types and he’d still pick you apart. You can brute force your way through status effects and entry hazards.”

“Armo isn’t just any ground type,” you explain with pride. “He’s the king of all ground types. He could get me through the gym by himself.”

“If since you’re so sure of yourself and your little sand rat, why don’t you take me on? My brother has better things to do than deal with you so I might as well save him the trouble and send you back to the woods.” By this point, Jordan has gotten a bit closer to you and is only a few inches away from you face. At times like this you wish you were taller.

“Oh,” you reply with your eyebrow raised “You’re approaching me? I don’t remember hearing about how you took down a pack of raging Onix. Your brother isn’t the only busy one around here so if I’m going to battle you, you’ll have to make it worth my while.”

“I’ll give you a day to prepare and since you don’t have 10 P to your name, I’ll pay for you to stay here while you get ready. If you don’t back out like a little punk then we’ll see how great you really are.” From the look on her face, you can tell that she’d rather challenge you to an actual fight but settled for this instead.

>Accept her challenge

Using what little space there is between the two of you, you extend your hand and grin.

“Challenge accepted, hopefully when this is all over I will have taught you a thing or two.”

“I don’t think I could ever learn to be as pathetic as you,” comes Jordan’s reply as she shakes your hand. She then turns to the receptionist and hands her 500 P. “I’ll be back for my team in an hour.”

As you watch her leave, you suddenly remember that Armo is still in need of medical attention. “When will I be able to pick up Armo?” You ask the receptionist.

“I’ll get a nurse and have the healing process started as soon as possible. Since I’m putting them all together, they should all be done within an hour.” She answers as sets the three Pokéballs in the tray along with the others. When she’s finished, she reaches into a drawer and hands you a keycard. “If you’d like I could just have him sent to your room. You look like you could collapse at any moment.”

All things considered, a good rest would do wonders for you. On the other hand, there’s a whole new town to explore out there and if you don’t want to get embarrassed tomorrow, you’ll have to spend too much time training to properly experience it.

Thinking about it logically, being a successful trainer should be pretty difficult.

>Would it be a fair fight against Ivan if we talked shit then challenged him to a battle? He's also just a figment of your imagination.

I was planned on having you battle him before leaving Cycad Town for good but depending on your choices, it may not happen until the halfway point or even the tournament if you can get all of the badges in time. If a confrontation were to happen around this point of the story, Ivan would've battled you using a Pokémon with a similar level to Armo's but saying any more on that would be getting into spoiler territory.

>Have Armo sent to your room while you sleep
>Ask the receptionist a question (can be paired with either of the first two options)

After you’re sure that your soon to be executioner has left the foyer, you lean into the desk and flash the receptionist a calm smile. “Just out of curiosity, would you happen to know what sort of Pokémon she has? I’d like to know how much I have to hold back before hand.”

“I’m sorry, but I’ve signed a nondisclosure agreement. Any information on another trainer’s Pokémon is not to be discussed by staff.” She sounds as if she rehearsed this line far too many times than she’d care to count.

“Wait, really?” You ask. “I know there a lot that goes into this whole trainer thing but doesn’t that seem a bit…excessive.”

The receptionist gives a small chuckle. “I’m only kidding, but you can’t seriously expect to win with just Counter can you?”

“That depends on what Pokémon she uses.”

“Well, I know for a fact that she has a Tyrogue and while that may sound like the perfect opportunity to abuse Counter, it really isn’t. This isn’t the first time she challenged a big talker like you who thought they had an edge. ” Despite her words, you can tell that she didn’t mean anything by it. “In fact I saw her battle someone here two weeks ago. She’s a lot like her brother actually, so despite her confrontational personality, you shouldn’t expect a straightforward bout. “

“That doesn’t sound too bad. I’ve dealt with worse, besides, Tyrouges aren’t exactly known for their power.”

The receptionist pushes a button on the desk and sits in her chair. “Give it some time and her Tyrouge will definitely make a name for itself. I’m sure of it.”

After thanking the receptionist, you head to your room and unlock it with your keycard. For 500 P this room is much nicer than you expected but you have more important things to do than lounge in front of a flat screen TV or relax in a fancy looking tub.

“What a wild ride this has been, I go outside looking to train and I run into all of this. Despite it all, things are finally looking up. If nothing else, it only get’s better from here.” As you drift off to sleep, thoughts of victory and exploration play repeatedly in your mind. Whether you win or lose tomorrow, you’re glad you took that first step.

When you wake up in the morning, you first notice Armo’s ball lying on a table to your right. Seeing the five empty slots on the table prompts you to consider your strategy for today. Armo is tough and he may have an Ace, but you’ve only had two battles with him and you did half of the work in one of them. He would certainly benefit from some more training. On the other hand, padding your team out will be necessary at some point and now is the perfect time to start.

After a taking a quick shower and enjoying the complimentary breakfast, you set out with Armo and with your mind made up. You can’t simply rely on Armo for this one, if Jordan is as tricky as the receptionist said, you might need another member in case you get caught off guard. After leaving the town, you find yourself walking along Route 4. It doesn’t look much different from Route 4 but it obviously gets more travelers; it even has a paved road running through it. Keeping to the more untamed sections of Route 4, it isn’t long until you hear some rustling in the grass. Taking out Armo’s ball, you release him and prepare for battle.

“Hit it with Scratch Armo!”

Armo nods and takes a second to size up Ducklett. Then without warning, he leaps forward at the surprised duck. It attempts to raise its feathers to block the oncoming attack but Armo easily overpowers its defense and sends the aquatic fowl reeling. Despite taking such a nasty hit, Ducklett looks as if it can go another round.

When I was a kid, I thought having eight moves made more sense, but now that I have experience with the series and its mechanics, that sounds excessive. Maybe I'll cap it at six. As for repetition, I doubt ever battle will feel the same, things are a bit less dynamic since we're working with random encounters and low level play here. Most trainer battles will require far more improvisation and strategy to win.

You deduce that Ducklett doesn’t have much fight left in him and decide to end the fight. Taking out the Pokéball you received last night from Teddiursa, you enlarge it and then throw it at the worn down duck. Upon connecting with the ball, Ducklett vanishes into the ball which then lands in the grass were your captive once stood. The ball shakes in the grass for a few seconds before coming to a stop with a click and an accompanying hum.

“Alright!” You exclaim as you walk over to the motionless ball. “Looks like we have a new teammate Armo.” From the looks of things, Armo doesn’t seem too care one way or another and instead approaches some bushes, most likely looking for some lunch.

Now that you have two Pokémon, you have some tough choices to make. Two is always better than one, but Ducklett doesn’t seem to be much of a fighter and your battle is in a few hours. If you go back to the Pokémon Center now, you should be able to train him for a bit. As you watch Armo hunt for bugs you recoil in horror, remembering that Armo still hasn’t had any training for today. No matter what you do, neither one will get much time to train and heal up for the battle. Reaching into your wallet, you count up what little cash you have and come mull over the idea of catching another Pokémon. Maybe sheer numbers can make up for a lack of experience.

>Monsoon
>Go back to the Pokémon Center

After a long walk, you find yourself back at the front desk of Marlan’s Pokémon Center. The receptionist from last night was off duty so you simply filled out the form and left your new partner in the hands of the receptionist. Within an hour, he is returned to you and you make your way to the back of the Pokémon Center to get some last minute training. Since you came back as soon as possible, you should have enough time for a quick session leaving you with just enough time to heal them before the battle.

Stepping onto the makeshift battling grounds behind the building, you take out your Pokéballs and release Armo and the newly named Monsoon. “Alright guys, come on out!”

Once the light fades from both Pokémon, Monsoon is able to get a good look at his surroundings and more importantly, Armo. As soon as the duck lays eyes on his former oppressor, he begins to waddle away as quickly as possible. For his part, Armo simply lies down in the dirt to relax.

“Training these two is going to be a headache.” You say as you stow away your Pokéballs.

>Have the two battle and focus on Monsoon’s progress

Walking over to Monsoon, you bend over and place a tentative hand on his head. “Listen, I know Armo roughed you up a little bit not too long ago, but he really isn’t so bad. I haven’t know him long but he had no problem stepping into the path of danger to save my life. Now that we’re on the same side, I’m sure that he’d be willing to do the same for you. You two will be battling pretty soon so if fighting isn’t really your thing it’s best to learn now.”

Monsoon shivers in place as he takes another look at Armo’s lounging form. “How about this, since he’s just sitting there right now, why don’t you take a free shot. Trust me, it will be good for the both of you and I’ll make sure he plays nice.”
Monsoon gulps and waddles a few feet away from Armo who has engaged in his hobby of digging random holes. While Armo’s back is still turn towards the daring duck, he blasts the preoccupied rodent with a blast of water making him jump in surprise. Armo turns around and with a serious look on his face, marches over to Monsoon with his hands on his hips as if demanding an apology. The two stare each other down for a moment until Monsoon blast him again, this time with more conviction. The next five minutes of your life are spent trying to keep Armo from throttling the hapless fowl.

After reeling the two in, you have them battle each other on fair terms. This mostly means that Monsoon won’t get to throw any more cheap shots at Armo. The two battle for a while, and despite Armo being the clear powerhouse out of the two, Monsoon’s mobility and advantageous typing manages to keep Armo on his toes at all times. Eventually, you get the sense that Monsoon isn’t as afraid of confrontation as he used to be but you doubt he’ll be able to keep it together in high-pressure situations. Still, he made some progress and that’s all that matters to you. After returning to the Pokémon Center again, you drop both of your partners off and head back to your room for a quick nap.

When the alarm you set earlier begins to ring, you climb out of bed to see your Pokéballs on the mysterious, disappearing table. Placing them in your bag, you exit the building and walk around to the back once more to meet Jordan. You both arrive around the same time and once your eyes meet, you unsling your bag and ready yourself for your first trainer battle in two years. She looks much less annoyed at the sight of you than she did before, but you can tell she has come to win.

“Honestly, a small part of me thought you were going to run off with the free night’s stay,” Jordan says, mirroring you and taking off her bag.

“I don’t run.” Your message is clear and simple.

“But do you lose?” She muses with a grin as she stretches her legs.

“We’ll see.”

“You’re a lot more quiet than you were last night. Does the idea of having to actually back up all of your talk scare you that much?”

“I’m just treating this battle with the seriousness it deserves.” You explain as you step onto your side of the field and face your opponent.

For brief second, you could have sworn that she smiled if only for an instant. “You’re lucky there isn’t crowd watching this,” Jordan finishes stretching and takes a ball from her belt. “Otherwise no one would ever take you seriously again. Now let’s get this over with before I start talking like you again.”

The tension on the field rises exponentially as the two of you grip your balls tightly as if in some sort of standoff. With uneven breaths and sweaty palms, you select one of your Pokémon and release it onto the field of battle.

The first Pokémon up to the plate is Monsoon who looks slightly nervous but manages to keep calm.

“You just caught that today? Does the phrase ‘rushed job’ mean anything to you?” Jordan simply shakes her head and tosses her own Pokéball onto the field, revealing the fabled Tyrouge the receptionist told you about.

Tyrouge extends his fist to Monsoon and gets into a defensive position, waiting for the call from Jordan.

“Just remember what we went over Monsoon! Keep a cool head and stay out of range!” You say in an attempt to reassure the uneasy duckling.

Before you all vote I should let you know that I will be handling trainer battles a bit differently from random encounters. In order to provide a proper challenge, I will take a more hands on approach to battling in these scenarios and cut down on the randomness that would occur in battle with wild Pokémon. In short, I will take control over the trainer’s commands unless specific conditions are met. If anyone has any suggestions for keeping things fair on both sides, feel free to let me know.

More time consuming actions however, will affect how the DC for an action is set. “Monsoon! Get some distance and use D-“

“Fake Out.” Orders Jordan, cutting you off.

Before Monsoon can even process the first half of your command, Tyrogue disappears and reappears within striking distance of Monsoon. Compared to the Onix you faced last night, Tyrogue makes them look like Slakoths when using Fake Out. He doesn’t stop there however and claps his hands inches away from Monsoon’s face. The shockwave produced by the collision forces Monsoon to step back and reorient itself.

“Now that he’s stunned, use Double Team!” She calls.

Once Monsoon fully recovers from the initial attack, the unfortunate duckling finds himself face to face with five identical looking Tyrogues.

“”We’ve got them now Tyrogue, use Bulk Up then Tackle!”

Tyrogue plants his feet firmly on the ground and begins to flex his unimpressive muscles. Though it doesn’t look as if he’s gotten any stronger, the red aura around him informs you that this is not the case. After powering up, Tyrogue charges at Monsoon with the intent to bowl him over.

“Dodge it Monsoon!” You call out to the duckling.

Tyrogue isn’t moving nearly as fast as he was when using Fake Out, he’s still quick enough to reach Monsoon and land another hit on him. For his part, Monsoon avoided some of the damage by moving slightly out of the way but was still sent over Tyrogue’s shoulder from the impact.

Rolling with the punches, you call out to Monsoon again. “Flap your wings Monsoon! If you can stay in the air you have this fight in the bag!”

Monsoon responds to your command quickly and with great conviction flaps his wings. You can tell that he isn’t very experienced with flight as he can only hold his position in the air while moving erratically through the air. To his credit, he still managed to avoid a nasty fall and is now well out of Tyrogue’s short range.

“Well, this might be a problem,” Jordan muses while looking up at the wayward bird. “Unless…” She smiles as if she has something up her sleeve, which can’t be good news for you.

The look on Jordan’s face unnerves you; whatever she’s planning you need to shut it down now.

“Use Water Gun and don’t let up!”

Upon hearing this, Monsoon gets himself into a suitable position and fires a powerful stream of water at its grounded foe.

“Use Bulk Up again and take him out of the sky!”

As soon as the words leave her lips, your eyes widen in concern. As the red aura surrounds Tyrogue once again, it suddenly hits you. By powering up, Tyrogue is strengthening his entire body and if he has enough, he might be able to jump high enough to catch Monsoon.

After completing Bulk Up, the previously earthbound scrapper leaps into the air, avoiding the first blast from Monsoon.

“Don’t let him get to you Monsoon!” You shout with a clenched fist.

Monsoon fires at Tyrogue once again, hitting him square in the face this time. Despite taking the attack head on and all of the damage the came with it, Tyrogue’s momentum is too great and he manages to snag both of Monsoons feet! Unable to bear the weight of his uninvited passenger, Monsoon quickly begins to plummet, taking Tyrogue down with him.

Rolled: N/A
Result(s): Success and Monumental Failure, Failure

As the two Pokémon rapidly approach the ground, you attempt to stabilize the situation.

“Blast him with Water Gun again and shake him off!”

Understanding the danger that this situation presents, Jordan coaches Tyrogue as well. “No matter what happens, don’t let go of him!”

Once again, Tyrogue takes another hard-hitting stream to the face as the two continue their fall. The purple menace proves himself to be resilient, if nothing else and continues to hold on. As he fights for positioning, he tightens his grip and grabs onto Monsoons midsection, putting himself on top and causing them to tumble through the air.

As they continue their descent, another idea comes to you, one that is almost sure to work. If Tyrogue won’t voluntarily let go, you’ll have to directly weaken his grip

“Monsoon! Use Water Sport.”

A panicked Monsoon is quick to follow through and expels gallons of water from his body, soaking both Pokémon to the bone. This new, slippery dimension being added to the fight does little to faze Tyrogue due to his new position and despite looking pretty damaged, he is determined to see this through.

Accepting the inevitable, Jordan steps in. “Use Bulk Up again to protect yourself from the fall!”

At the last second, Tyrogue tightens his grip on Monsoon and glows red for the third time in the fight. The red light continues to engulf the two combatants as they crash into the ground, spraying dirt and water everywhere. When the dirt settles, both Pokémon are lying in a newly formed mud puddle with Tyrogue on top. The dazed Pokémon rolls off of Monsoon and using what little strength he has left to shakily get back up on his feet. Between Monsoon’s attacks and the crash, you can tell that Tyrogue doesn’t have much left in him but there he stands, giving the downed duckling a confident smirk.

“That’s a wrap ‘Onix Slayer’! Bring out ‘The King’ and let’s finish this.” Jordan taunts as she looks on at Tyrogue with pride.

Feeling a sense of dread, you take out Monsoon’s Pokéball and prepare to recall him. Suddenly, Monsoon surprises three of you as he slowly gets up as well, spiting out some water and giving his shocked foe a determined hiss.

“That Ducklett just won’t stay down! It looks like we’ll have to do the job ourselves Tyrogue!” Says Jordan, overcoming her shock with determination of her own.

“Tyrogue, use Double Team again!”

Repeating his earlier performance, Tyrogue glows white and five identical copies of him emerge from the light. The small group then begins to close in on the cornered Monsoon. The confused duckling shifts it gaze from one copy to the other, unsure of which one to attack.

“Use the mud around you and fling it at all of them!” You call out, as the Tyrogues get closer.

Gathering up all of the mud he can coat on his wings, Monsoon jumps above the clones and hurls mud all over them until only one mud covered Tyrogue remains.
Jordan nods as she watches the clones disappear. “You two aren’t gonna make this easy for me, huh? Ok Tyrogue! Enough games, use Tackle one more time and take this Ducklett out!”

Tyrogue pounds a closed first into his open palm and charges at Monsoon, the mud practically flying off of him as he picks up speed.

“Don’t let him get close Monsoon! Give him the strongest blast you’ve got!”

Jumping back to gain distance, Monsoon then charges up and unleashes another powerful torrent. The resilient Tyrogue takes the attack head on for the third time and with great effort, powers through the stream and knocks Monsoon flat on his back. Unlike his last fall, this time Monsoon doesn’t get up again and motionlessly collapses in the field. Tyrogue stands over his fallen foe for a second before falling to the ground, exhausted. Though he is still conscious, unlike Monsoon, he doesn’t have any fight left in him.

Pokéballs in hand, both you and Jordan recall your respective Pokémon and put them away.

“As much as I hate to admit it, you gave me a run for my money but we both know you can’t beat me. You might not be able to back up all of your smack talk, but you’re pretty good for a beginner. If you give up now, we can call this off. There’s no shame in losing at your level.” At this point it’s hard to tell whether or not she’s mocking you with that comment.

“Like I said before, I don’t run. Monsoon didn’t fight this hard just for me to give up.”

“Ok then, I guess I might as well get my money’s worth,” says Jordan withdrawing a second ball from her belt. “I hope you enjoy snow days.” Her warning rings through the air as the ball lands on the field.

Once the ball opens, Jordan’s second Pokémon emerges in a flash of light and plants its stubby feet on the ground. Once the light show ends, an odd Pokémon resembling a snow-covered tree is revealed. As soon as you lay eyes on the Pokémon, the skies become cloudy and hail begins to fall from the sky. An oppressive breeze invites itself onto the field as it, and the area around the Pokémon Center becomes trapped in a localized snowstorm.

Fighting through the cold despite your lack of a jacket, you throw your own Pokéball onto the field and watch as Armo steps foot onto the snowy battleground. Not even an instant passes before Armo looks at you as if you’ve lost all of your brain capacity, shivering violently as he does.

“Don’t look at me, I’m freezing over here too,” you deflect as your teeth begin to chatter.

Rolled: Irrelevant
Result(s): Failure, Success

Once Armo finishes his death glare you shout over the roaring winds. “Blind it with Sand Attack and follow up with Scratch!” As the winds pick up, you hug yourself for warmth.

Armo looks down at the ground below him, only to find that the oncoming snow is quickly burying all of the dirt and mud from the previous battle. Improvising, he slings the snow at his opponent as if he were in a sort of snowball fight and quickly follows behind his projectile in order to deliver a swipe from his claws.

On her side of the field, Jordan is looking comfortable in the cold if only slightly more than you. “Snover, use Powder Snow as he approaches and prepare for Leech Seed.”

Snover waves its limbs in the air and then points in the direction of Armo before unleashing a small blizzard in Armo’s direction. The slush-covered dirtball that Armo flung is engulf by the onslaught and within seconds, it covers Armo as well. Much like Tyrogue however, Armo powers through the blast and delivers a clean hit onto Snover’s wooden torso, sending it skidding.

“We have him now Snover, launch the Leech Seed!”

Once again, the small tree points its arms toward Armo but instead of a frigid blast of air, it fires a large seed which hits Armo square in the chest. As soon as the seed makes contact, vines emerge from it and wrap themselves around Armo’s body, securing it in place.

“If you’re planning on making a comeback, you’d better work fast“ Warns Jordan as she reaches into her backpack to pull out a jacket. “Even if Snover just sits there for the rest of the battle, the damage will still add up quickly.”

As much as you hate to admit it to yourself, Armo won’t be able to put don’t Snover in time with just Scratch. Between the hail pelting him, the energy sapping seed, and Snover’s attacks, Armo taking damage from far too many sources to hold out for long. If you’re going to pull off at least one victory in this battle, you’ll need to approach this from another angle.

>Have Armo do something else. (Dig underground for protection and remove Leech Seed)

Rolled: Irrelevant
Result(s): Success, Failure

As hail begins to rain down, Armo zips around the field on all fours in an attempt to dodge the falling ice. Unfortunately his traction is being tampered with by all of the snow and sleet and eventually, he is struck by a chunk of hail. Immediately afterwards, the seed on his chest begins to glow green causing strange green energy to flow from Armo to Snover.

He’s not going to last long while fighting on her terms. I have to get Armo into a more favorable position! Suddenly, you get an idea. If Snover is going to make use of the environment, then so should you!

“Armo! Dig underground to get out of the storm!” You call out as the wind picks up.

Once again, Armo flashes you his three digit thumbs up and dives under the snow.

“Don’t forget to remove the seed while you’re down there!”

Jordan gives you a quizzical look from across the field. “You do realize that I can just do it again right? Are you planning on keeping him down their forever?”

You simply shrug your shoulders in response though from her point of view, you’re just a vague silhouette due to all of the snowfall. You honestly don’t know how you can leverage your position so buying time would be the next best thing. It doesn’t seem as if time is on your side however as the transfer of green energy occurs again. It seems like Armo isn’t strong enough to pry open the seed and its position on its body doesn’t allow him to strike it effectively.

“It’s a start at least.” You think to yourself as you begin pacing to heat yourself up.

Rolled: 26
Result: Failure

The field becomes eerily quiet as the hail and snow continue to fall. Thankfully, Armo is spared the wrath of the storm thanks to his burrowing capabilities. Still, with the seed still attached to Armo, it’s only a matter o f time before he is defeated.

“Take the fight to Snover and drag him underground!” You call out to the hole Armo dug.

Within seconds, a clear path is being made towards Snover as the snow and dirt above ground are displaced by Armo’s efforts.

“Pay close attention to his movements and don’t let him catch you. All you have to do is avoid him!”

With that, the game of Raticate and Persian begins. Armo utilizes any and every trick he can think of in order to catch his icy foe before all of his energy is drained from him. In turn, Snover does everything he can to avoid capture. He leaps over any oddities in the ground, slides when he needs to gain speed, and attempts to fake out Armo by switching from one direction to another. From the outside looking in, this entire chase is simply a waste of time. Unfortunately, time is a valuable resource for both you and Armo and as the chase continues, you can practically feel the seconds go by. Armo feels it much more strongly as his life force is drained yet again by the seed while he continues to chase his elusive opponent.

Throw sand at his face, drag him to the hole and proceed to mauling it.
>>
>>4124370
Wouldn’t we have to surface to do that? Unless we have something like dig or rollout we probably should stay underground. Maybe we can beat the QM’s roll if we try again.
>>
>>4124376
The problem is we're running on a timer, our options are limited, simple trying to drop him into a hole won't work. I could try a new approach though, How about this.

Make the snover fall into a hole and proceed to provoke a cave in with him inside.
>>
>>4124412
Like bury him alive? I support this
>>
>>4124412
I don’t think we’re that deep underground. If everyone can see Armo’s path he can’t be deeper than a foot at best. Even if we were that deep how would we cases a cave in anyway?
>>
>>4124422
We been digging all around the ground, the soil is unstable enough to to make it possible, don't forget it ain't just ground, it's ground and snow so it's deeper than it looks, once it's buried we can get some strikes for free, maybe even a decisive strike.

>Have Armo do something else (Attempt to dig a hole under Snover again)

Rolled: 30
Result(s): Success

After being drained again by the seed, Armo becomes even more determined to catch Snover. He begins to dig faster and in more erratic patterns in order to confuse sentient tree. Eventually, Snover ends up tripping over one of the obstructions created by Armo and scrambles to recover. Armo does not let him get that chance however, and before Snover can get back on his feet, he finds himself being dragged down and forced to fight underground.

From the sounds of it, Armo is managing to get some decent hits in but the element of surprise will wear off soon, and Snover has proven himself to be a dangerous foe despite using only two moves. Both you and Armo will need to stay on your toes.

>(Use /Counter/)

Rolled: Irrelevant
Results: Success, Failure

As Armo continues hacking away at Snover, you continue to encourage him.

“Don’t let up Armo! We can beat him!” Once you say this, you can hear the attacks becoming faster as Armo pours all he has into overpowering his opponent.

“You know what to do Snover, take him for a ride.” You have not idea what Jordan is referring to, but you know it can’t be good.

“Armo use Counter, now!” You warn as the wind begins to pick up again.

Suddenly orange and green light begins to spill from the holes and the various trails that Armo had previously made. The wind becomes so oppressive that even you are struggling to stay on your feet as the green lights become more numerous. Then without warning, the ground splits open and a swirling vortex of leaves force Armo out from under the ground. Armo is carried into the air as the glowing leaves disappear and like his teammate before him, he is sent hurtling into the ground. Following the impact, the orange light surrounding Armo flickers before fading away entirely, signaling his defeat. Snover steps out from the large hole created by his attack and raises his arms in triumph. With a sigh, you take out Armo’s ball and call him back, causing him to vanish from the field.

“Good job Snover, get some rest.” Congratulates Jordan as she recalls her victorious Pokémon.

As soon as the icy little tree disappears, the snowfall stops and the clouds slowly vanish, revealing the late evening sky. Jordan places Snover’s ball back on her belt and turns to you.

Jordan begins to speak as she walks over to your side of the field. “That was a pretty good match. At first I thought you were a complete joke, especially when you brought out a Pokémon you just caught today. I don’t know if you’re really good at picking out your Pokémon or if you’re just a really good trainer either way, I’m kind of impressed. How long have you been doing this?”
“I’m not a beginner, I’ve had a handful of battles before and I know a few things about battling but I never actually went out to catch Pokémon of my own and train them until two days ago.”

“So that’s what you’re doing now?” Jordan asks. “You don’t actually live in the woods, right?”

Given how dirty your clothes got during last night’s adventures, you aren’t too bothered by the question. “No, I just went too far out during a training session than I should’ve and had to camp out for a bit. I’m going back home as soon as my team recovers.” You explain as you brush some snow out of your hair.

“Are you sure you should go now? It’s getting dark you know.” As you look up in the sky, you can see that it is in fact getting late. You could make it back to Cycad Town by midnight if you hurried.

>”I guess you have a point. Traveling at night seems to give me bad luck anyway.”

“So there was some truth to your story, huh?”

“Some details might have been stretch a little but yeah. You never know what you could run across at night.” You explain, thinking back to your first attempt at leaving home all those years ago.

Jordan nods in agreement. “Most people say that you shouldn’t go it alone on certain Routes when it’s dark, that’s why I stick to the towns at night. I hear that even Ace Trainers run into some trouble when exploring alone so at this level, I don’t want to take any chances.” She checks her watch for a moment and then looks back to you. “So are you staying at the Center again?”

“I don’t really have anywhere else to go,” you shrug. “Those rooms are pretty nice for 500 P.”

“They’re alright, but I prefer hotels.” Jordan fishes through her bag for a moment before offering you 800 P. “They raise the price by 300 a night for people without a trainer card, so you’ll probably need this.”

“Thanks,” you say as you pocket the money. “So what are you doing next? Are you going after Vernon again?”

“I’ll need to think up some new strategies before trying again, maybe I will save him for later. Either way, he’s going down eventually!” She sounds just as fired up as she was last night. “Anyways, I’m going to head off; you should get your trainer card as soon as you can. Who knows, I might even see you in the tournament this year if you hurry.”

“Maybe.” You mutter more to yourself than to her.

With a wave you say farewell to your worthy adversary and walk back into the Pokémon Center. After dropping your team off at the front desk, you spend the next hour watching movies in your room while waiting for Armo and Monsoon to be sent to your room. Before you know it, an hour passes and the table containing your Pokéballs appears by your bedside. Now that you’re all set, you can think about your next move. After taking a 24-hour detour, it’s time to get back to working towards your goals.

Technically you aren’t allowed to battle for money until you get your card but here, only two people know that you aren’t a “real trainer”. Reflecting on your most recent battle, you figure that most trainers are unlikely to battle with any sort of intricate plan in mind. With that said, you could spend the rest of the evening and tomorrow battling trainers on Route 4. Alternatively, you still have someone back at Cycad Town who could help speed up your journey to become a licensed trainer. If you wanted, you could simply go back tomorrow morning and find him.

Before I continue, I'd like to get a consensus. Most battles in this quest win't have as much story around it or be as involved as the last one but they'll be time consuming nonetheless. To illustrate,, if we were to go through 2 or more battles it would likely take us three or four days to get through them judging from what I've seen so far. That being said, I would like to know how many battles you would like to partake in tomorrow. I would also like to know if you want me to implement a system that will speed up more mundane battles or to simply gloss over them entirely.

I think 2 or 3 battles a day are more than enough. But if they are less historic driven, they would be easier to QM, I would imagine.

After making your decision, you turn off the TV, gather your stuff, and once again venture out into Marlan Town. After a bit of walking, you find yourself back at the beginning of Route 4 just as the sun sets over the horizon. You send out Armo and the fight commences. Unlike your previous battle, it is much less exciting and tactical. Armo once again proves himself to be a heavy hitter and his defenses allow him to keep on the offensive at all times. Within a minute you are able to defeat the cyclist who awards you 384 P and rides away. You still have some time to spare before you have to go back and there is a good chance that there is at least one more trainer out on Route 4 who is prepared for a battle.

Result(s): TO Grunt Dave

Valuing money over safety, you press on deeper into Route 4. Though the streetlamps and cars that pass by occasionally give you some comfort, you can’t help but feel that trouble is lurking just over your shoulder. The cries of the various nocturnal Pokémon beginning their night of hunting only empower your intrusive thoughts. Eventually, you come across a figure searching frantically throughout the tall grass a ways away from the road. Hesitantly, you approach the figure until you can make out his appearance.

The figure is rather tall but somewhat lanky with a patchy beard. He appears to be in his late teens and is wearing what looks to be camouflage clothing. The most interesting thing about him however is a rather expensive looking watch, which occasionally flashes blue, as if someone were attempting to communicate with him.

The figure, taking no notice of you checks his watch and grumbles. “Those jerks have gone too far this time. You get beat by one kid and suddenly, you’re nothing more than the clean up guy.” He then begins to idly kick some grass as he continues his rant. “I wasn’t even in Nucite City when that geezer escaped but did that mater to them? No! Instead they call on me of all people while I’m at work and send me off to find some guy that they themselves couldn’t keep in a cage.”

“Oh so you’re with Team Offset are you?” You inquire, causing the grunt to jump in surprise. “I was looking for something more but you’ll do.”

“Get lost kid. Isn’t it past your bedtime or something?”

“Don’t be so dismissive, from the sound of things, even I outrank you.” You smirk as you select a Pokéball. “I don’t know what you’re doing out here but since I’m the only one around, I guess it’s up to me to deal with you.”

“You won’t be so high and mighty once you don’t have your precious Pokémon to hide behind. “ The grunt snaps as he withdraws his own Pokéball.

“Aren’t you doing the same thing though?” You ask rhetorically.

The goon stares at you, dumbfounded before his watch begins to flash again. “One day Dave, one day.” Whispers the grunt known as Dave before releasing his Pokémon.

A question, mechanics about leveling up, when our pokemons are stronger or not, they only gain xp by winning or do they gain xp just for battling too? And about new moves, do we actively know when they learn or we just surprise catch them using it?

Or is it all hidden? I'm not sure

“Alright Monsoon, show them what you’ve got!” You exclaim as you send out the determined duckling.

As the ball opens Monsoon materializes in front of you and stares down his opponent, an unassuming Dunsparce. Monsoon views this Dave’s Pokémon with a bit of curiosity and waits for your orders.

Dave looks at his flashing watch for a moment before looking down upon his partner in crime. “We need to make this quick Dunsparce, after we get done with this we can finally go home and get some sleep.” Dunsparce seems to perk up at the idea of finally getting a break and beats its tiny wings furiously as it prepares for battle.

“Lead with Defog and follow up with Water Gun!”

Your aquatic fowl raises his tiny wings and a small breeze blows through the grass, nothing seems to happen as a result of this as far as you can tell. Monsson’s next move however is much more upfront about its purpose and with a jet of water, Monsoon sends the winged snake reeling.

“That’s nothing! Dunsparce, use Screech!” Instructs the not so commanding Dave.

The squinty-eyed snake flaps its wings again before unleashing a loud cry that seems very unfitting for a creature of its size. Regardless, Monsoon steps back and covers his ear holes in an attempt to block out the harsh sound.

After the ringing in your ears begins to subside, you tell Monsoon to use Water Gun again, with decent results. Dunsparce is looking somewhat worn out from the last few attacks but it still has a few tricks up its sleeve.

“Use Rollout and flatten that duck!” As you hear the command, your eyes widen. It appears that Dave isn’t completely incompetent.

Dunsparce curls up in a manner that reminds you of a wheel before rolling towards Monsoon at a considerable pace. Before Monsoon can think to get out of the way, Dunsparce strikes with the fury of one angry snake. Monsoon is knocked aside and hardly manages to scramble to his webbed feet before his foe drifts to the right in order to make another pass. Judging from how Monsoon is standing, you get the feeling that he won’t be able to take too many of those.

Dunsparce executes an efficient turn and picks up speed as it lines itself up with Monsoon once again.

Waving with your arm, you call out to the endangered duckling. “Get out of his way Monsoon!”

Your efforts are in vain however, and the winged snake ails his target with a harsh thud, kicking up rocks as it connects. Monsoon is sent flying and lands flat on his beak, unconscious.

“Ha! That’ll teach you to look down on Team Offset! We’re going places now and we won’t be stopped by a few cocky brats!” Dave is ecstatic at what he thinks is his victory. “Now give me everything you’ve got kid and the next time you see me, you’d better just mind your business.”

You recall Monsoon and bring out Armo’s ball, much to Dave’s disappointment. “I’ll give you something alright. We’ve got him on the ropes Armo, let’s send this grunt packing!”

As soon as you send Armo out, you give him the game plan. “Use Defense Curl then Counter!”

Armo nods and curls up, flashing ever so slightly. The rolling snake returns once again to flatten its new opponent, this time however, things would end up much differently. Before Dunsparce connects with Armo, the hardy Sandshrew unleashes the now familiar orange aura and takes the blow head on. Still curled up, Armo then moves return the favor, chasing after Dunsparce who is still attepting to turn around after his last attack. Armo’s attack proves much stronger than that of his adversary and knocks the yellow serpent out of his rolling formation! Dunsparce hisses at Armo, still looking as if it can go another round. Armo on the other hand, looks as if he has made a breakthrough of some sort and completely ignores his foe.

After standing still for a moment, Armo snaps his tiny fingers and curls up, using Defense Curl once again.

Dave’s eyes widen once he realizes what your partner is attempting. “Dunsparce use Bide, he’s coming after you again!”

Upon hearing this, the snake becomes stiff and begins shaking ever so slightly. Armo pays little attention to the antics of his opponents and takes off at high speeds, slamming into Dunsparce for the second time in the battle. He then takes a sharp turn and comes around for a second pass.

“We’ve got this kid now! Once that hits a second time, we’ll pay him right back!” Dave seems to have regained his assuredness.

He does have a point however, you haven’t seen too many Pokémon with Bide, but you know that it works similarly to Counter. If Dunsparce survives this, you can’t be too sure if Armo will make it.

Despite your concerns, you hold back and make no attempt to stop Armo. “Even without me, he’s more than capable of handling himself. If he’s sure about this then so am I.”

As your internal debate comes to a close, Armo once again slams into his opponent for the third and to your relief, final time. The attack practically flattens the winged snake and a spectacular shower of rocks erupts from the ground as Armo skids to a halt.

“Again!? I must be cursed or something! Where did I go wrong?” Obviously, Dave isn’t taking this too well.

Though you can relate to his attitude in some respects, you still need some money and Monsoon didn’t get knocked out just so your ego could be stroked for the second time today. “Cursed or not I still won.”

“Are you expecting a ribbon or something?” Questions Dave as he recalls his Pokémon. “I’m part of a large organization, you can’t just shake me down like some common trainer.”

“You can’t be that much of a sore loser.” You remark as you approach him, ignoring the hypocrisy of your statement. “Besides, you still haven’t told me what exactly you’re doing out here.”

“Whatever, this is the Team’s money anyway so it’s no skin off my nose.” Dave throws a wad of bills on the ground. “You’d better hope we never cross path again.” With that, the grunt then makes his exit.

After counting the money, you determine that you have made 594 P today, not counting Jordan’s gift. You store the money away in your bag and recall Armo before heading back the way you came. The walk back to Marlan Town is uneventful and you are given plenty of time to think things over.

As you make your way back into town, the thought occurs to you that you could simply save some money and sleep somewhere else for the night. With the money you have now, you’re almost halfway there and losing 800 P would certainly do some damage to your pockets.

>Heal your team then find somewhere else to sleep.

With your mind made up, you make your last trip to the Pokémon Center and after an hour of waiting, you retrieve your team and begin looking for a place to sleep. After looking around for a moment, you decide to sleep near the Police Station. You’re close enough so that you’re unlikely to be the victim of a crime while you sleep but also far enough that the authorities won’t crack down on you for loitering or whatever excuse they feel like cooking up. As you sit on the concrete, curled up to conserve heat and using your bag as a pillow, the thought occurs to you to call your mother. She certainly isn’t the most attentive mother you know but you know for a fact that she’d very concerned about you if nothing else; you’ve been gone for several days after all.

You consider making the call but at the same time, you feel as if it’s unnecessary. For all you know, she may not have even noticed your absence. Even if she did notice, you’ll be back by tomorrow and you know she won’t be home when you get back. As the cold night air blows through the town, you’re tempted to simply go to sleep and get through the night as quickly as possible.

With a sigh, you roll over on your stomach and retrieve your ancient cell phone from your bag. You only have two numbers on it, that being the home phone and your mother’s phone. With a few clicks, you dial her number and wait as the ring drones on. At the fifth ring, there is an answer and you hear her voice on the other end.

“Hey Walt, is there something you need? You didn’t eat all of the food already right?”

“There was no food when I left, and I’m not calling about groceries. I’ve been out of town for two days now and I just wanted to check in.”

“Aaron called earlier and mentioned that you had a Pokémon. I guess you couldn’t help running off again after you finally got the chance.” All things considered she sounds much more understanding than you expected.

“I didn’t run off,” you sigh. “I just went out too far on Route 3 and one thing lead to another.”

“Well when are you coming back?”

“I’m coming back tomorrow, I just need to deal with a few things before I leave.”

“Where are you now?”

“I’m in Marlan Town right now and don’t worry, I’m doing alright.”

“Well of course you are, if you’re calling me then that means you’re safe….somehow.”

You can’t really argue with that logic, and while you thought she might be a bit concerned, your journey has been relatively safe all things considered. “I guess you’re right.”

There is a long pause in the conversation before you decide to speak up again. “I think I can really do it this time. I’ve actually got two Pokémon now and I’ve even won a few battles. Once I get back home, I’m going to get enough money to take the test again.”

“Are you sure that’s a good idea?” Your mother asks.

“Ivan isn’t there anymore, I don’t have to deal with him so I have nothing to worry about. If I’m lucky he’s already left to go strutting around somewhere else.” The mere act of thinking about him puts and edge in your voice.

“I’m not talking about the test, I’m sure you would pass that without any problems. I’m worried about you and what will happen if this doesn’t work out for you in the long run. It’s hard for me to say this, but I honestly don’t know what you’ll do with yourself if this doesn’t go as you planned. You might do something that you’ll end up regretting.” You can tell that she’s rather uncomfortable talking with you like this.

“I know I’ve done some things in the past, but I’ll be worse off if I give up now. Just going out this far making an attempt has changed me for the better. I might not get too far with this but win or lose, I’ll get something out of all of it.” There is a lot of truth in your statement and you’re proud that you can say it with full confidence. When you come back home, things will be different.

“You sound sure of yourself, I guess going out really did something for you. I just hope you can hold on to this attitude going forward.” Your mother isn’t totally convinced but you can’t really blame her.

“I can and I will. I’m done with moping around. When I get back, I’m going to hit the ground running!”

There’s a pause before your mother begins to speak again. “Well I’m happy for you and proud of what you’ve accomplished so far. I hope to see you soon Walt, have a safe trip back.” With that she hangs up and you’re once again left with only your thoughts.

“Tomorrow is going to be another busy day, I guess I should get my plans together before I drift off.”

After mentally organizing tomorrows schedule, you once again curl up and prepare for a long and cold night. The thought occurs to you to bring out your Pokémon in order to aid against the chill of the night but you decide against it. Eventually, the warm embrace of slumber does find you and you spend the next several hours oblivious to any of life’s numerous hardships. Upon waking up to the sounds of pedestrians you get up and head to the nearest department store, ignoring to rumbling of your stomach as you maneuver through the streets.

“That complimentary breakfast sounds really good right now.” You think to yourself as you make your way to your destination.

Eventually, you find what you’re looking for and head inside the store. You take a quick look around the place before going to the counters located near the entrance of the store. After waiting for a minute, you manage to spot an employee approach him.

That's why I made the distinction between the two options. A few people talked as if they wanted to make them from scratch so I provided the option if anyone really felt like going the extra mile. Given how people are coming and going though, I can't be too sure if any of those people are still around anymore aside from one.

>”Hello, I’m looking to buy a few hats for my Pokémon.”

The sleepy looking employee lets out a sigh before checking his watch and motioning for you to follow him. He guides you through several aisles and around a few displays until you end up in a decently sized section of the store. The shelves within it contain hats of any and all varieties. There are sports caps, visors, party hats, watch caps, bucket hats, conical hats, sun hats, bowler hats, stetsons, flat caps, fedoras, and of course, straw hats.

“As you can see sir, we have a wide variety of high quality goods for purchase. I hope that you may find something to your liking.” Somehow the employee sounds even more tired than he looks.

As you gaze upon the shelves you begin to lose track of time envisioning how well one hat would look on either of your Pokémon. You don’t know whether to give them matching ones or contrasting ones. In fact, you’re tempted to get one for yourself. Eventually, you snap out of it and prepare to make your decision.

>Get two straw hats
>Refrain from buying one for yourself

After picking out your selection, you make your way back to the front counter in order to make your purchase.

“I’d like to buy these hats.” You say, placing them down.

The cashier takes the items scans them before turning towards you. “Your total is 500 P, will that be cash or card?”

>Purchase the hats and look for trainers to battle

>Refrain from purchasing the hats and look for trainers to battle

After leaving the store, you leave Marlan Town for the final time and make your way back to Route 3. Unlike your previous visits, the path is swarming with trainers; some are traveling in groups, while others are going it alone. If you had to guess, most of these trainers are from Seloras City, located southeast of Cycad Town. Since there are so many trainers walking around, you can actually pick your battles instead of fumbling around in the dark hoping to run across someone. After taking a quick look at the various trainers, you decide which trainer(s) you want to approach.

>Approach a group (Double Battle)

Making your choice, you approach a group of three kids around your age. “Hi, my name is Walter, would any of you guys happen trainers?”

“We are,” says one of the kids as he points to himself and another boy wearing obnoxious looking shoes. “Shane doesn’t have a Pokémon so we’re trying to help him out.” As he says this, he points to another boy with long red hair.

“You don’t need to say that to everyone we meet.” Shane cuts in, clearly wishing to speak for himself.

Before any drawn out argument can begin between the group, you continue. “Well in that case, would the two of you like to take me on in a double battle?”

“Sure,” says the boy with the obnoxious shoes. “Those are my favorite kinds of battles!”

“It would be more fun if you wouldn’t get in my way all the time, Sean.” Says the apparent leader of this group. “Alright, we’ll do this battle as a first to two. The first side to lose both of their Pokémon loses.”

“Sounds good to me,” you agree as you send out Armo and Monsoon. “I hope you guys are ready!”

The ringleader looks at your team and grins to himself. “I think we have this one in the bag Sean! Go Elekid!”

“You know it bro. Go Paras!”

(If you want to simulate the battle, let me know.)

Result(s): Success, Success

“You know what to do Elekid, use Thunder Shock on Ducklett!” Commands the frontman as he points at the poor duckling.

The attack is launched faster than you could have ever prepared for and it streaks across the field in an instant. Much like you, Monsoon was caught off guard and takes the attack head on. The electricity crackles all along his body for a few seconds and causes him to drop to one knee.

Horrified, you set your sights on taking out the yellow menace. “Monsoon, use Water Sport on both Elekid and Paras! If you do, Elekid won’t be able to shock you again!” You then point at Armo
who while less concerned than you, is still eager to dish out some payback. “Use Defense Curl and then Rollout on Elekid!”

Upon hearing your command, Monsoon launches a spray of water all over the opposing side of the field as Armo curls up before flashing and taking off towards at high speed.

“Well don’t just stand there, Sean! Do something!” Exclaims the leader as Armo tears across the grass.

“I thought I was getting in your way, Sheldon.” Sean says with a grin, enjoying the temporary shift in their dynamic.

As the two bicker, Armo slams into Elekid and keeps plowing forward, knocking his foe to the side as he does. The angered Elekid spits out some dirt and stands before turning to face his attacker.

“Ok, now I’m up! Paras use Absorb on Sandshrew!” Says Sean as he gets his head back in the game.

The strange arachnid turns towards Armo, as he begins to make a turn and the mushrooms on its back begin to shake. As Armo completes his turn and comes back around, green energy begins to drain from the armored rodent and goes straight to the fungi on Paras’ back. Due to his current state, you can’t tell how much damage Armo has taken from that attack, but Armo seems undetered as he once again charges at Elekid.

Rolled: 90
Result(s): Monumental Success

As Armo plows through Elekid once again, you turn your attention to Monsoon, who looks ready to collapse at any moment. Despite his current state, you know that you won’t be winning this battle without him.

“Dig deep Monsoon, and try flying again!” You call out to the duckling.

Monsoon takes a running start before jumping and flapping his tiny wings will all his might.

“Great job Monsoon!” You cheer. “Now hit Paras as hard as you can!”

Monsoon circles around the battlefield as he zeroes in on his target. Then, without warning, he then swoops low and crashes into Paras, bowling him over in a similar manner to Armo. After the collision, flying duckling rights himself and reamins airborne.

After finishing his second attack, Armo turns around for a third with his sights on the weakened Elekid.

“Use Leer on Sandshrew and get ready to finish this!” Orders Sheldon before turning to Sean. “Get Paras to slow that Sandshrew down a little.”

“Got it!” Sean nods. “Paras, use Stun Spore on Sandshrew!”

With flashing eyes, Elekid glares at Armo’s approaching form while Paras sends a cloud of golden pollen in the direction of the charging shrew. The cloud engulfs Armo and as he emerges from it, sparks begin to fly off of him.

>Let Armo do his thing
>(Use /Wing Attack/ on Paras)

Rolled: Irrelevant
Result(s): Success

“We’ve got him now bro! Paras use Absorb one more time!”

“Stand by with Low Kick, Elekid!” Sheldon instructs with an even tone.

Once again, green spheres of energy leave Armo’s body and are absorbed by Paras. Armo continues his charge, though his approach is much slower now due to the Stun Spore attack that he went through. This decrease in speed gives Elekid the perfect opening and he takes full advantage of it with a solid kick at Armo’s curled up form. Unfortunately for Elekid, while Armo’s speed had decreased, the strength of Rollout had become far too much for him to deal with and his attack does little to protect him. Armo crashes into him for the final time and sends him rolling along the ground along with Armo as a multitude of rocks are torn from the earth. When the dust settles, both Armo and Elekid are revealed to be unconscious with Elekid looking far worse off than Armo.

“At least we got him out of the way.” Shrugs Sheldon as he recalls Elekid. “Its up to you and Paras now.”

You recall Armo and place his ball in your bag. “Don’t get too comfortable, this isn’t over yet!” You look up at Monsoon who is still flying through the air. “Use Wing Attack on Paras and let’s win this battle!”

Monsoon comes down again with the same ferocity as before and slams Paras once again with his glowing wings. As Monsoon returns to the sky, Paras finds itself on scrambling to maintain its footing once again. If you were to guess, one more hit from either side will be enough to end this battle.

Rolled: Irrelevant
Result(s): Success

“This is it Monsoon, use Wing Attack one last time!”

“Paras use Scratch when Ducklett gets close!”

The difference between victory and defeat are only seconds apart and no one is more aware of that than you. The tension in the air thickens as Monsoon circles around the field before he rockets towards Paras with his glowing wings. In response, Paras raises one of its claws waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike. This opportunity never comes for Paras as Monsoon’s attack blows right through it, launching the fungi clad arachnid across the field, leaving a trail of torn up grass and dirt. Paras struggles in an attempt to get up but is unable to stand and collapses.

“That was a pretty close one,” says Sean recalling his Paras. “If only Paras was a little bit faster. Oh well, you’re a pretty good trainer Walter, a two on one battle is pretty hard to manage.”

“Yes it is. Are you heading towards Seloras City? It looks like you might be ready to take on the Gym.” Compliments Sheldon as he and Sean approach you.

“I was actually on my way back to Cycad Town, I have to handle something before I get my first badge.” You reply, trying to word things as vaguely as possible.

“Well I’d say you’re almost ready. With a few more training sessions both of your Pokémon should be ready. ” Sheldon comments as hands you 180 P.

Sean follows his lead and gives you 220 P. “You should probably catch one more Pokémon just to be safe. Your Sandshrew is tough but if he can’t hit Avery’s Pokémon then your Ducklett will be doing most of the battling.”

“I’ll keep that in mind,” You say as you pocket the money. “I need to get moving before it get’s too late. Thanks for the battle guys. “ You recall Monsoon and give the group a wave as you continue your journey back home.

“See ya!” Calls Sean while the other two simply wave. Soon the group disappears from sight and you are once again left alone.

With Armo knocked out, and Monsoon on his last legs, you decide to avoid any battles for the time being and simply focus on getting back to Cycad Town safely. After several hours of walking you finally reach the outskirts of town. You may have gotten here much earlier than you intended but nightfall is still quickly approaching. You still have a ways to go before you reach the town proper, but you figure that you should organize your priorities before continuing further.

>Go to the Pokémon Center and heal your team
>Find Nathan

You mentally organize your short to do list and soon after, you find yourself at the entrance to the Pokémon Center. You drop off your team and leave as quickly as possible in order to avoid any unwanted encounters. After a short walk you make it back to your apartment complex and locate apartment #134. Before you step foot on the doormat, you can smell the smoke coming from the other side of the door and you can hear the sounds of growls on the other side as well. You give the door a quick knock and after a minute or so of waiting, the “Notorious Nate” himself answers the door.

“So you’re finally back eh? You sure took your sweet time,” Nathan steps aside and motions for you to come in.

Before you can enter, a large Mightyena comes into view and within seconds comes running at you with gleaming fangs. You turn to run but you feel a firm grip on the back of your shirt, erasing any chance of escape. Realizing that running is not an option, you simply close you’re eyes and try to protect your vitals with your hands. You can hear as the intimidating beast snarls and howls right next to you and yet you feel no pain.

“Relax and open your eyes kid,” Says Nathan with a chuckle. You follow his instructions and watch as the Mightyena swipes at you, or more accurately, through you. “How do you like my new security system huh? Just got it a few weeks ago.”

“I don’t.” You retort as you try to avoid starting directly into the hologram’s bloodshot eyes.

“Well that means I got my money’s worth.” Chuckles Nathan again. “You’re always so jumpy kid.” He then walks over to one of the several two-seater couches in the living room and flops into the seat.

Shaking off the panic attack that nearly surfaced, you step inside the apartment and take a seat as well.

Nathan leans back in his couch and puts his feet on a nearby table. “Your mother wouldn’t stop going on and on about you, I spent all day being a therapist yesterday.”

“She didn’t seem to worried when I called her last night.” You muse, thinking out loud.

“I’m a miracle worker kid, I can do anything! There’s a reason why people come to me with their problems you know.”

“Well I’ve got a problem that needs solving as well,” you explain as you try to ignore the smell of smoke that clings to the couch.

A look of apprehension flashes across Nathan’s face before he responds. “I normally don’t turn down work, but are you sure you want my help? The last time you utilized my services, you got yourself into some trouble.”

>”This is different. I just need you to pull some strings.”

Upon hearing your request, Nathan shifts into a less casual position and brushes a few crumbs off of his shirt. “What kind of strings are we talking about here?”

“I’m trying to become a Pokémon trainer, again but I don’t have the money and even if I could get a job, I’d still be stuck here until I can save up for the test fees.”

“So if I’m reading between the lines here,” Nathan responds as he leans forwards with his hands clasped. “You want me to get you your own official trainers card and Pokédex, is that it?

“If you could pull it off, I would be in your debt.” You respond with a serious tone.

“What do you mean ‘if you could’? Like I said kid, I work miracles and I’ve got people everywhere.” Nathan then gets up and moves to his kitchen. “In fact, if you gave me enough time I could even make you a Gym Leader.”

After a few minutes, he returns with a large cup and a sandwich. “Eat up kid, you look like you’ve been surviving on nuts and berries for the last few days.”

Without hesitation you accept the modest meal and dig in. Between bites, you attempt to ask him a very important question. “So…..what would….I owe you for this?” You inquire in between bites.

Nathan sit back down and once again takes up his business pose. “I’ve known you since you were born, so I know that I can give you this gift in advance without worrying. For the next few days you can just relax and live life. When I get your stuff for you, you’re gonna be a licensed trainer so traveling will be much easier for you which in turn will make things easier for me.”

“You want me…..to go somewhere. To do what…exactly?”

“Well, I’ve got two things to do that I would rather handle in person, but you’ll do. I have some business to take care of in both Seloras and Nucite City. Since these places are pretty far apart, I’ll give you a choice on which job you want to take.”

You finish up the meal and continue with your questioning. “Can you tell me what I’m supposed to be doing?”

>>4142134
“Good question kid, you always need to know what you’re getting into. The job in Nucite city requires you to track down a guy who owes me some money. I’ve got a few ideas on where he’ll be.” Nathan pauses to gauge your reaction. “Don’t give me that look kid, I don’t need you to rough anybody up. I mean, no offense, but if I owed a guy money and he sent you to collect, I beat you down, take your money, and then I’d do the same to the guy that hired you. This is a safe job kid, I know this guy personally, I was pretty close with his mother if you know what I mean.” He gives you an exaggerated wink before continuing. “Just mention me and you’ll get the money with no problems.”

“What about Seloras?” You ask as you mull over what you’ve been told so far.

“This one is pretty simple too. All you need to do is go to the city and deliver a package to a specific address and then you’re done. It’s so easy I could do it in my sleep.” After his explanation, Nathan leans back in the couch once again. “So what’ll it be?”

You can tell that Nathan isn’t telling you everything but knowing him, that’s only because you haven’t made any promises yet. Now that he’s laid out his price, the ball is in your court.

“So what do I do if the guy from Nucite City doesn’t have the money?” You ask.

“I doubt that’ll happen but if he doesn’t have it just tell him to come see me, we’ll work something out.” A smile makes its way across his face. “So, you sound like you know what you want to do.”

“I’d rather not carry mysterious packages around,” you explain simply. “What does this guy look like and where do you think he is?”

“Sit tight.” Answers Nathan as he slides off the couch and disappears once again.

A few minutes later, he returns with a large binder stuffed with various sheets of paper. After a bit of searching, Nathan finds what he is looking for and hands you a small photo of your target. The individual depicted is a rather scruffy looking male with dark brown hair, a five o’clock shadow, and blue eyes. Despite his unkempt appearance, you get the feeling that this guy is pretty popular with the ladies.

“His name is Gabe Harrison, he and his father are archeologists so you should be able to find them at the Central Isoin Museum. If they aren’t there, check out this address.” Nathan hands you a slip of paper with an address belonging to someone named Larch.

“Alright, I think I can do this.” You say as you put the picture and the slip of paper into your bag.

Nathan extends his hand, and you meet him halfway for a handshake. “Good to have you on board. Like I said, it should only take a day or so for me to get you what you need so take it easy for until then. I know you don’t have many people looking out for you kid, but don’t forget about the few who are.”

You stand up and give Nathan a nod. “I won’t. Thanks for your help Nathan.”

“Anytime.” Offers Nathan as you exit the apartment.

Now that everything is set up, all you need to do is get your team back and go home. It’s pretty late though and you have yet to officially come home; if you really wanted to you could pick up Armo and Monsoon in the morning.

>Pick them up now

You make your way back to the Pokémon Center but by the time you get there, the moon hangs high in the air. When you approach the front desk, you find out that you have come a few minutes early and the healing process will be finished shortly. Unfortunately, you feel a strong urge to use the bathroom during your considerable wait. You manage to keep it together long enough to reclaim your team without looking like a fool. As soon as you collect them however, you make a beeline towards the Center’s bathrooms and find a suitable stall.

Right as you get yourself situated, a newcomer kicks open a nearby door, making his prescience known.

“Yeah, yeah I’m, coming…… No, I didn’t say anything to her but I don’t want to go out looking for her at midnight!” Your eyes widen as soon as you hear the voice. This isn’t exactly a code red, but you hoped you wouldn’t run into any other enemies from the old days.

“Don’t blame me for this, both of us needed to get our last badges in Seloras and you wanted to do a ‘victory lap’……Fine I’ll go look for her, just don’t do anything crazy.” After a pause, you hear a few clicks and another call is made. It doesn’t get picked up however, and instead an obnoxious recorded message plays. “Hey T, you there? Chloe and Ivan are fighting again, and he told us to find her. I’m at the Pokémon Center right now so let’s meet up and get this over with.”

You’re in a pretty tight spot here, and though the situation looks to be getting worse, timing is everything.

>Hide out in the stalls

Of all the people to run into on your way home, it had to be one of Ivan’s idiotic friends. You recognize the voice as Harry’s, one of more annoying members of Ivan’s small crew. He’s a rather large individual but you don’t really view him as much of a threat. He may be brazen when he has backup but when push comes to shove, he’s soft both physically and in regards to his resolve. Even so, you’d rather not deal with him or Trevor, who should be on the way if he checks his voicemail with any regularity. You determine that the best course of action is to simply wait until the danger passes before making your way home.

After what seems like an eternity, Harry makes another call. “T, are you almost here? I’ve been waiting forever……..How did you get lost? This crappy town isn’t that big. Whatever, just get over here, I’m in the bathroom.” After the brief exchange, Harry hangs up and begins to watch videos on his phone to pass the time, much to your annoyance.

Eventually, the bathroom door slams open and a new set of feet come into view.

“Why did you wait for me in the bathroom? Is there something you’re trying to tell me here?” Asks Trevor with a mocking tone.

“Shut up, if I waited anywhere else you would’ve never found me.”

“You know there’s a lobby right?”

“Well look who finally gained a few brain cells. If you keep at it, maybe you’ll be able to spell your own name one day.”

“Whatever Snorlax, let’s just find Chloe and get this over with. I’m getting that badge tomorrow and I’m not letting Ivan’s girl problems get in the way again.” To your relief, Trevor sounds as if he is ready to go.

“Wait up, I need to wash my hands.’ Harry replies as he turns on the sink. As the water runs, you also hear the sounds of several paper towels being taken. Before you can put two and two together, balled up, wet paper towels are thrown into your stall as the pair begin to laugh.

“Wake up you bum, there’s plenty of sidewalks for you to sleep on outside!” As soon as the duo run out of improvised ammunition, they both leave the bathroom and go out of their way to turn off the lights before leaving.

“All things considered, that could’ve been worse.” You muse to yourself as you take out your phone with the intent to use it as a flashlight. After making your way to the sink, you wash your hands and wait.

After waiting for a few moments just to be safe, you exit the bathroom and leave the Pokémon Center. The walk home is both quiet and somewhat tiring since you’ve been on your feet for most of the day. You manage to push yourself however, and before you know it, you find yourself back in your small, bleak apartment. Your home may not be the best, but it sure beats sleeping in the woods or by a Police Station. You take off your worn down shoes and head down the hallway where your room, your mother’s room, and the bathroom are situated. You don’t hear anything coming from the other rooms so you enter your bedroom and throw your bag onto the floor. You feel far too exhausted to do anything else, and so you simply flop down on your bed and sit there in the darkness.

“Here I am, back where I started, and yet so much has changed. In just a few days, everything will fall into place and I’ll be able make a new start.” You glance over at the corner where you left your bag containing most of your possessions as well as your Pokémon. “I wonder how far I’ll be able to go,” you think to yourself as you drift off to sleep.
