The year is 1866. You are Daniel Stockton, a veteran of the American Civil War and general in the Aizu Domain's military. You've come to Japan looking for work, and with the nation on the brink of war, there is an ever-increasing demand for men such as yourself. Last time, you entered negotiations with Wells Fargo regarding funding for the Shogunal government.

You end up negotiating a medium-sized line of credit with a large withdrawal limit. Seeing as this will be best used as emergency funding, it makes sense to have as much of it as possible available at once.

There are documents to sign, and the process ultimately takes about twenty minutes. Once the deal is completed, the bankers mention that they will be sending a representative to Japan in order to act as a go-between for Wells Fargo and the government.

The negotiations come to a close, and Keisuke heads back to the Great Eastern. You stand up and stretch, having been sitting on the same couch for nearly an hour now.

“Now that we’ve sorted out your line of credit,” Copperton, the bank’s head official, says. “Is there anything else you’d like to discuss, General?”

>”I’d like to take out a personal line of credit.”
>”You mentioned investing earlier. What does that entail?”
>”I believe we’ve done everything we came here to do, good day.” (leave)

I'd rather keep the investments in japan where we are near them for now.

And what a pleasant surprise this thread is.

“I’m interested in making some investments.” You cross your arms. “Could you explain the details to me?”

“Of course,” Copperton nods. “Essentially, when you invest in a commodity or company, you buy a small portion of that thing. As it either goes up or down in value, your shares become worth more or less.”

You nod slowly, scratching your chin. “Interesting. And this is something I would be able to do right now?”

Copperton nods again. “I am a licensed broker, so I could handle any investments you might want to make.”

“What sorts of things could I invest in?”

Copperton rubs his chin thoughtfully. “Well currently a very popular venture to buy stock in is the Transcontinental Railroad. They’re saying it will be completed within the year, and if that’s true, there is potential to reap quite substantial returns on any shares purchased. In addition, I have been looking over shares in a steel commodities trust based out of Pennsylvania, whose directors claim they expect a large demand for new steel in the next three to five years.”

“Steel and railroads…” You nod. “What else?”

“Well, you could always see about investing in newly-started ventures. There is an oil-driller in Ohio who seems promising.”

“Hmm,” you trail off, considering your options.

>”I think I’ll invest in the railroad.”
>”Steel is the material of the future. I’ll buy some shares of that steel trust.”
>”I don’t see people getting rid of their oil lamps anytime soon. The Ohio drilling operation sounds like a solid investment.”
>”Actually, I think I’ll stay away from anything like investing for now. I’d like to avoid tying up money so far from home.”
>Write-in.

>”I don’t see people getting rid of their oil lamps anytime soon. The Ohio drilling operation sounds like a solid investment.”

Isn't japan piss poor when it comes too oil production anyway? We can use this as a way to import cheaper ish? Oil right?
>>
>>4101940
This but also Railroad
>>
>>4101959
We can invest in the railroad back home ourself, If anything Steel would be half-way decent as well because I don't think Japan has any major steel production or the resources FOR major steel production.

Outside of you know taking over China.

>>4101933
>>”Steel is the material of the future. I’ll buy some shares of that steel trust.”

oil lamps aren't some years away from being fucked over by eletricity?
>>
>>4101966
also, whatever we do, just one investment guys, we need to invest back home, buy some land and all that for us
>>
>>4101966
Just burn more oil in power plants. BOOM
>>
>>4101933

>”Steel is the material of the future. I’ll buy some shares of that steel trust.”

And then we supply our investments in japan with steel
>>
>>4101984
They burn coal on those since its cheaper, I think oil is some good years away to becoming relevant only after cars are widespread, it would be a good investment but consider our immediate needs I think steel is a more solid and pratical choice

>>”Steel is the material of the future. I’ll buy some shares of that steel trust.”

You pause to think. Truly, steel is the material of the future. Guns, locomotives, ships, bridges, and even buildings; all are rapidly beginning to incorporate steel in their construction as opposed to iron.

“The steel trust sounds like the best choice,” you say. “You mentioned they’re based out of Pennsylvania?”

“Yes, near the city of Pittsburgh. I believe a young Scotsman is the chief of the trust…” He pauses to head into an adjoining room, then returns with a ledger. Opening it, he flips through until he finds the trust in question. “Ah, yes. Carnegie and Company, right here.” He pauses. “The principal companies are Union Ironworks and Keystone Bridge Company.”

You look at the ledger and nod. “How long have they been operating?”

“Not long, as a cohesive unit.” Copperton frowns. “But the trust is made up of several steel firms that supplied rail-steel to the Union during the War.”

“Interesting.” You rub your chin thoughtfully. “So they’re already an established business. Not much risk, I would imagine…”

Copperton’s expression changes a bit. “Well, as it stands, Union Steel is actually looking for a large-scale investor to cover expansion and operating costs at a new steel mill. Such a large investment would naturally make said investor a partner in the venture.” He raises an eyebrow, pointing to figures listed in the ledger. “Of course, you can invest any amount in the trust, but this is the number they’re looking for.”

Nakajima and Sato peer over your shoulder, one of them gasping at the sum. Truly, it would nearly exhaust your current savings… That being said, it would provide an extremely useful asset, and even pay itself off, should the company do well. “Hmm…” You frown deeply.

“Well, shall I get brokerage papers ready?” Copperton looks at you with anticipation.

>”A partner in a steel venture? Sign me up.” (large investment; will use up most of your savings)
>”Well, I suppose I can make a small investment in this steel trust.” (small investment; will barely affect your savings)
>”Actually, I don’t think I want to entangle myself in a business across the ocean from my main responsibilities.” (decline to invest)

“I suppose I can make a small investment in the steel trust,” you reply. Writing down your number, barely any of your total savings, you ten hand it to Copperton.

“Very good, General.” He nods vigorously. “I’ll get the brokerage papers signed up.”

Signing the papers doesn’t take long, and soon, Copperton tells you that your bid will be processed by the end of the day. Though only slightly, you are now involved with the steel industry.

With nothing else to do at the bank, you and your officers leave Wells Fargo. Exiting onto the streets of San Francisco, you see that the sun is lower in the sky now. It is mid-afternoon, and being that it is November, that means the sun will soon be going down.

A carriage passes, likely carrying high-society types to some sort of event. You put your hands in your pockets and look up the street. In one direction is the road that leads back toward the docks; the poorer area of the city is that way, as well as the place where the Great Eastern is docked. In the opposite direction, the road ascends into the hilly terrain of the eastern part of the city. Hotels, high-class saloons and ballrooms, as well as all manner of high society can be found up there.

“Where shall we go next, General?” Sato steps beside you, lighting a cigar.

>”Back to the ship. I’d like to not be on the streets of San Francisco after dark.”
>”Seeing as we’re foreign dignitaries, we should head to one of the fancy hotels. No reason to spend our shore leave cooped up in our cabins.”

You smile, raising an eyebrow. “Seeing as we’re foreign dignitaries, why not stay in a fancy hotel?” Gesturing toward the wealthy part of town, you continue. “Better than staying cooped up in our cabins for the duration of our stay here.”

“A good idea,” Sato grins. “I will hail a carriage.”

Soon, the three of you hire such a carriage and are immediately taken to a nearby hotel overlooking the harbor district. Though it has a good view of the bay, the hotel in question is firmly in the business district of the city.

The three of you exit the carriage and are quickly greeted by a hotel employee. “Ah, hello sirs.” He bows slightly.

“Good afternoon,” you reply. “Me and my compatriots are officials with the Japanese government, looking for lodging while our ship is re-coaled.”

“I see,” the man raises an eyebrow, looking at the three of you. “And your name, sir?”

“General Daniel Stockton.” You nod as the man produces a pad of paper and writes your name down.

“Please follow me, gentlemen.” You do as the employee instructs, entering the hotel’s lobby. It is a beautifully-appointed place, with large windows and high ceilings, as well as marble floors. On one side of the lobby is a saloon and restaurant, with the other side having the desks where clerks hand keys to customers. You’ve never actually been in any establishment this fancy. “As dignitaries of a foreign government, you are naturally entitled to the penthouse suites, should you wish.” He guides you to the sign-in desk, showing you the prices of the rooms. The penthouse is astronomically expensive, you notice, but you imagine it affords a level of luxury beyond what most peoples’ entire homes have.

>”Very well, I’ll reserve two penthouse rooms.”
>”Normal hotel rooms will be fine.”
>”I’m sure even your most economical rooms will be quite sufficient.”
>”Actually, I think I’ll visit the restaurant first, if that would be alright.”

“I’ll take two penthouse rooms,” you say casually. It’s a substantial cost for two hotel rooms, but more than affordable for you.

“Only two, sir?” The clerk raises an eyebrow at you.

Nodding, you reply. “Two is sufficient, yes.”

“Very well,” the man says back. He hands you two keys, one of which you hand to Sato. They have little brass cards hanging from them which display the room number.

You pay for the rooms with American currency (thankfully, you’ve had the forethought to convert some of your savings to US dollars before setting out on your journey) then turn toward the restaurant. “Shall we eat?”

Sato shrugs. “I think I will head up to my room, sir. I am feeling a bit tired from today’s activities.”

You bow lightly, which he returns. “Of course, Major.” Turning to Nakajima, you raise an eyebrow. “And you, Nakajima?”

“I would enjoy a meal,” she replies.

“Then we’ll enjoy a meal.” Walking to the restaurant, you are quickly seated by a waiter who hands you the menus.

“What would you recommend, General?” Nakajima frowns, looking over the menu.

“Well, I’ve never had a New York Strip, but that sounds quite good. Really I would expect any steak from this place to be great.” Looking at the menu once more, you consider what Nakajima might want. “The grilled fish might be a good option if you’re wanting something lighter though.”

“Hmm…” Nakajima rubs her chin. “I think I will try a steak.”

You chuckle. “So, what do you think of America so far?”

Nakajima shrugs. “At the moment, I have seen quite little of it.” She gestures at the rather ostentatious decorations of the restaurant. “Though, I have noticed you Americans seem particularly fond of…” She trails off. “Excessive ornamentation.”

You nod curtly. “This is a rich mans’ hotel. The wealthy have always had a taste for this sort of stuff…” Shrugging. “We’ll be able to see more of the city before we head back to the ship tomorrow. I have a few things planned.”

Nakajima unrolls the napkin in front of her, seemingly surprised at the cornucopia of silverware that spills onto the table. “S-sir…” She picks up a fork and spoon, holding them with a grip that would make using them impossible. “Are these the things you eat food with?”

Chuckling, you nod. “It seems I have some things to teach you about eating in the West.”
