Far off, nestled in an otherwise small Japanese town lies the Dark Gate Academy. An institution of tremendous size, the Academy holds a long kept secret. Unknown to the outside world, this unseemly town is home to a tear in our reality. A gate between our world and a bizarre dimension known as the Darkworld. The inhabitants of this hellish world breach this gate and attempt to flood into our reality and spread throughout the world on a regular basis. However, the Dark Gate Academy is home to students of truly extraordinary abilities. The ability to sense the presence of these evil Darkworld creatures, and defeat them in combat, sending them back through the gate.

They cannot close the rift between our world and the Darkworld, but the students and staff of Dark Gate Academy have dedicated their lives to using their amazing powers to hold back the darkness that plagues our world, even if it costs them their lives. They have risen up to the challenge and in secret have become great heroic defenders of the world as we know it.

For many years, Dark Gate Academy has held back the forces of the Darkworld, kept this unspeakable evil contained within their walls in secret. But now, with their existence revealed, a great cloud of change looms over Dark Gate Academy.

Aoki's Army was defeated, but at a great personal cost.

Your name is Ryoji Shida, and the last year of your life has been… interesting. More accurately, it’s been hell. But the good kind? It’s hard to put it into words. You’ve never been the best with… good words. Unless it’s tearing some jackass a new asshole, you’ve never been great at… expressing.

“Oh crap, is that today?” Kosuke looks as he barges into your room, seeing you packing your bag by the edge of your bed.

“Sure is,” Ken sighs. “It’s a rough one.”

Kosuke nods as you zip up your bag and grab your fishing rods. “I’ll pray for you… if I can find the time between napping.”

“So you won’t?” Ken jokes.

You playfully smack Kosuke across the back of the head. “Cut it out assholes, it won’t be that bad.”

“You say that now,” Rini jokes, rounding the corner and jabbing you in the ribs with a closed fist. “I can barely spend a classroom period with Kobashi, let alone with-”

“That’s my future wife you’re talkin’ bout,” you remind her.

“She’d agree with me!” Rini laughs.

“… Fair.”

This place is a hellscape, how could it be so complicated to put it into words? You’re sent here to fight for your lives so some snot nosed ingrates get to sit comfortably on their assess in front of the TV. Having to face monsters, demons, evil gods… how is there any way to put it than… trash?

As you ready to leave the dorms, you’re stopped by Akemi, approaching you with a plate of cookies.

“Waaaaaaaiiiiiiit!” she exclaims, leaping through the air like a grasshopper to close the distance. “You can’t leave without trying them! Get them while they’re hot!”

As you pick a cookie off the plate, you look to Raiden, still walking with his cane assistance. “Let them cool a little,” he says in his solemn voice, but with a noticeable lisp.

“You tried one, didn’t you?”

“Burnt my tongue...” he mutters.

You smirk as you open the door to the dorms.

… That guy wanted to kill you once. Not even a year ago.

Since then, he’s been beaten, carved, burned and crucified to the point he’ll never look like a normal man again.

That’s what this place does to people! You aren’t even a real human anymore! How hard is it to say?

You stop by the library to leave off a book you were reading.

“Whoa! Since when did you start reading books?!” Akio leaps over the counter to examine to cover. “The hell is Holes?!”

“It’s a good book,” you shrug. “It’s all I ever loan.”

“I have a few textbooks you could borrow-” Satomi begins.

“-No. Never that,” you reply.

“Oh hey!” Seishiro exclaims as he sees your bags. “Is today the big day? Bro, you’re really going through with that?!”

Hikaru slams her hands down on her counter. She’s filling in for the other librarian who… you’re not sure. She died, but… she didn’t? You don’t know, it’s not your class. “Will all of you keep it down?! This is still a damn library! Akio and Seishiro, go throw rocks at eachother outside, or whatever it is you do!”

“Damn, that’s a good one, babe...” Akio chuckles, stonewalling her orders. “You’re starting to look like a pufferfish!”

“N-No I’m not!” Hikaru blushes as the two bicker back and forth, with a smile on their faces.

Akio’s family has been in this school since day one, just like Saki’s. His body has been covered in scars since he was ten…

There shouldn’t be any happiness to find in this dump.

As you turn to walk away, the door to the library swings open as a tall dark-haired stubbled man enters.

“Uncle!” Akio calls out.

“This is a library,” Akihito-sensei reminds him. “And you all should be focusing on the project I left you over the weekend.”

“Not me,” you reply.

“And why is that?” Akihito remarks. “I don’t make special cases.”

“Except for your favourite nephew-” Akio begins.

“Only nephew, and no.” Akihito looks to you. “And you, Ryoji, can never talk your way into getting a… wait, that trip of yours is today, isn’t it?”

“Yep,” you cockily place you hands in your jacket pockets and smirk. “But keep going on, teach. What was that you were saying?”

Akihito shakes his head. “Okay, you’re free to go. But you’ll have extra homework come Monday!”

“Detention too, probably.”

“Why, what did you do this time?”

You grin. “If you can’t find out by Monday, do I really deserve detention?”

As you make your way out to the courtyard, you’re stopped by another pairing. Or rather, you’re stopped by an individual, while her partner stands and gives a polite sigh.

“My dear Ryoji, did you really think you could escape me?” Chihiro exclaims as she wraps her arms around you. “If you really thought you could leave for the weekend without telling me… I would have sent my doves after you! They would have listened on everything you said, and spotted if you were to do anything… scandalous. Now that I think about it, I can pick up such amazing gossip with these birds. Tres Bien!”

“I’ll ensure she doesn’t,” Sayeka smiles, and the hedgehog on her shoulder murbles in agreement.

“So your vision probably told you how this will go, right?” you remark. “Give me a warning.”

“Now surely it’s not right to tell you the future,” Sayeka jokes. “After all if I do it will probably change it.”

“C’mon, tell me something. It’s hardly life or death!”

Sayeka sighs. “I think you will have a nice time. I haven’t looked into the trip.”

Surprises, huh? You look to Sayeka’s smiling face… and look away from her pale eyes that don’t connect with you. She’s blind, and she wouldn’t be blind were it not for this place. Yet she smiles.

“Ryoji dear, the gate is that way!” Chihiro points. “Are you so flustered you forgot the layout of the school?”

“No,” you respond. “I’m visiting… him, first.”

“Oh...” Chihiro mutters. “Nariko and Hiro are there already.”

You make your way towards the gravesite of the academy, as you reach the shrine in question, with a sniffling Nariko and a stoic Hiro standing over it, Nariko’s two cats swarming around the area.

Sora Marufuji
1999-2017
Loving brother and Friend.

“Are those little gremlins causing trouble by the graves?” you ask.

“They’re well behaved,” Nariko sniffles. “You’re seeing him before you head off.”

You nod. “I am… who bought the flowers, they look nice.”

Hiro places a hand on Nariko’s shoulder. “That was me. We were also planning on adding proper memorials for Sho, Maya and Daisuke soon.”

Four dead, and no bodies to even bring home. 1999… he was still a child. He’ll never drink his first beer, or drive his first car. Sora was never interested in material things like that… but he never had the option. And now he never will.

“Take care, I’ll be back in two days,” you give a reassuring nod, and a small side hug to the still distraught Nariko. You place a hand on the shrine. “See you again soon, Sora. Pray for me this weekend, wherever you are, buddy.”

As you leave through the shrubbery back to the courtyard, you’re spotted by an underclassmen. “Ryoji...” Kazuma mutters. “You just came from...”

“Sure did, Kouhai.”

“You... okay?” he asks.

You nod. “Yeah, I’ll be having a relaxing weekend. Maybe. But what are you gonna do without your senpai to guide you for the next two days?”

“I don’t think you’ve… ever guided me,” Kaz points out, before you press on, ignoring him.

As you leave the grave area, names come flying to your head.

Sho, Maya, Daisuke, Yamato, Sora…

Nina…

People who would all still be alive if they never got roped into this mess. Into this hell.

You press on towards the gates, before you stop and make your way over to a friend eating breakfast.

“Just out of theatre practice?” you ask.

Nanami looks up to you, and immediately rushes you with a hug. “Ryoji! My first mate! I didn’t think I’d get a chance to see you before you took off!”

Quickly returning the hug, you place your hand on the pirate hat atop her head. “What’s the captain gonna do without her trusted first mate this weekend?”

“Probably hold auditions for replacements.”

“What?”

Nanami lets out a booming laugh. “I’m kidding, I’m kidding! But I am hoping to hire Ukon and Mai as cabin crew.”

The gates of the school are nearing ever closer, as you pass by the training grounds. Of course, one runner is quick to spot you and zoom over in your direction.

“Leaving so soon, are we?” Rei smirks.

“Miss Arisato!” Isamu hops forward to be by her side. “You can’t leave in the middle of a training session! Our underclassmen where just starting to feel the rush of a heroes energy! Look as it flows through the likes of Amaya and Risa over there! Observe the glistening thighs that can only mean power is flowing through-”

Rei stamps on Isamu’s foot. “Don’t talk about glistening thighs that aren’t my own!”

Isamu chuckles. “Well, of course they can’t compare to the poor heroic energy booming from your own meaty-”

“And d-don’t talk about my thighs!” Rei blushes, while the giant blue-haired woman beside them can’t help but snigger.

Akira tosses you a candy bar in a wrapper. “For the trip, Ryoji.”

“Thanks,” you reply, but you can’t take your eyes of the metal arm she used to throw it. The arm she lost in this school.

“Don’t think that taking a weekend off means you can slack on your training!” Rei warns. “I’m gonna push you twice as hard on Monday!”

“Wow, it’s like listening to two Akihitos...” you remark, as you head on towards the gates.

You look to the wall of the gates, one you once planned on jumping, running away and never returning.

Why didn’t you?

This place is full of pain. It’s full of hurt. Disfigured orphans and sad misfits abound, used as the line of defence against a force of evil while the adults in charge sit back and watch you get culled off for some greater good. Do the people of the world really deserve this defence? They never treated you like you were worth a damn, why should you treat them like they’re worth losing your friends over? You should have left when you had the chance, the opportunity to walk away for a weekend is a great reprieve.

There’s just nothing good here. It’s not worth it. Yet you struggle to say it, to put it into words how you feel about this place. Since you joined this school you’ve been beaten, stabbed, burned, kidnapped, possessed, dismembered, and lost friends incredibly close to you. And what have you seen in return? Nothing! Not a damn thing! So, why is it so hard to say? How do you struggle to describe your feelings on this place?

As you step out through the gates, you remember why.

That same tightness in your chest every time you walk away. Like… you don’t want to leave the academy. Like… you want to stay.

You’ll never figure out why, but perhaps the biggest reason smiles as she meets you outside the gates.

“Are you ready?” Saki asks, as she takes you by the hand.

You shrug. “Ready as I’ll ever be, Sak.”

She gets on her tiptoes and pulls you down into a slight kiss on the cheek. “You’ll be fine. He’s not that scary.”

“Sak-”

“Okay, he is,” she nods. “But I think the two of you will get along swimmingly.”

“And you?”

“I’ve got group work to be taking care of, don’t worry about me,” she says as she nudges over to Maro-senpai leaning against the wall. “I’m doing a collaborative slideshow on the dangers of improper uniform with Class 3!”

“That actually sounds like your heaven,” you joke.

“I know!” Saki beams, stars in her eyes from the though of spending the weekend on a preachy educational powerpoint.

Maro steps forward and pats you on the shoulder. “Good luck, Ryoji.”

Always short on words, that cool cowboy is. “That’s all?”

“Do I need to say more?” he wonders, before heading back to the courtyard.

“So… where is he?” you ask.

“Down by the lake,” she replies. “Come on.”

You make your way down to the lake, where you see him. 81 years of age, but even with his silver hair and his rugged aged face, you would never presume as such. His face is that of a man in his 60s, and his body is that of a man in his physical prime. Seven feet tall, with an intimidating broad and rippling frame, even in his advanced years he stands as possibly the strongest human alive. The Dragon Kobashi.

In a Hawaiian shirt.

As you and your fiance approach her grandfather, she nudges her elbow into your chest several times in an ill-fated attempt to stiffle your laughter.

You reach him, and the proud Wei Kobashi stands over you… in his blue flowery Hawaiian shirt with his fishing gear.

A weekend long fishing trip with the principal of the school.

What have you gotten yourself into?

“Shida,” Wei remarks.

Wei huffs. "Aren't you a little young for that reference?"

"Aren't you a little old to pull that off?" you respond.

Saki shakes her head. "Ooookay, I can see this is off to a great start..."

"When I heard fishing trip I didn't expect it to be by the lake," you respond. "Kinda lame, if you ask me. Where's your boat?"

"It's not by the lake," Wei corrects you. "I was simply testing my old fishing gear. We'll be heading out on a river line."

"And how did that testing go?"

Wei nods his head towards to green hill behind him, stocked full of several dozen large loaches and pikes, flopping around as if they were freshly caught. "They'll also serve as our food on the trip."

Saki's eyes glow and she beams with pride. "That's the tenacity and skill of the Kobashi family line! We've always been experts of any handy trade, isn't that right, Grandfather?"

Wei nods. Damn... the old man is a secret show-off, he's trying to impress you isn't he? What a bag of old wind. And wait... food for the trip? He told you he would cover all meals on the trip, but raw fish? The geezer is rich and he's relying on freshly caught trout, what an asshole!

Saki stealthily hands you a box of food. "Here you are, Ryoji. I figured he'd do this?"

"Did you make this for me?" you ask as you place the bento box in your jacket.

Saki shakes her head. "No, the girls held me down and made it as a collaborative effort. Something about wanting it to actually taste good..."

Sounds about right, for all her skills and strengths, cooking has always been Saki's achilles heel. It's almost supernatural how disastrous her meals are.

"Well, I guess this is us," you smile to Saki. "Have fun this weekend."

"You try to do the same, jellybean!" she smiles, as she kisses you on the cheek. Her grandfather grunts and looks away, which causes you to smirk. You probably shouldn't get so much joy over pissing off the principal but... screw him.

And with that, you bid farewell to your fiance, to your friends, and to that school for the next two days, setting off on an open river... with the principal of said school. Maybe he'll want a nice relaxing weekend where you don't have to talk too... but knowing him he's probably going to make you scrub the deck of his boat or whatever.

The train ride to the river is... quiet. You expected Wei to badger you from the outset, but the old man simply pulls out a book about Tennis and gets reading. You don't care to ask him about it. He's eighty years old, and he doesn't really have any friends. He doesn't even care for his own son. He likely has to find some way to fill his time between running a death school.

You arrive at the river, and it's easy to see which boat in port is his. A luxurious white yacht, with a dragon's head upon the bow. "You ever hear of modesty?" you ask him.

"Pride is a virtue," Wei fires back as he throws his bags aboard. He doesn't offer to help you with yours.

You examine the painted name on the bough of the ship. Knowing Wei, it's probably something pretentious or bloated with his family pride... "King Ghidorah?" you mutter at the name. "Isn't that a kaiju?"

"Yes," Wei replies. "I'm a fan."

Unexpected. "That kaiju is the bad guy, last I checked..."

You hop aboard, as Wei begins to untether the ropes from dock. "Have you ever sailed a boat?"

"I helped build a boat," you recall.

"Not what I asked, Shida."

"Then no."

Wei grunts. "Well, I suppose you won't take guidance from me. If you don't know how the boat works, stand aside and out of my way until we're on open waters."

You chuckle to yourself. "Wow, it's like I'm not even here. Sounds like a dream come true for you... why did you even agree to bring me on this trip?"

"I didn't expect you to agree to come," Wei responds. "What made you decide to come with me?"

Wei shakes his head. "Well, I'm very much the same."

"Find it hard to believe you care about Saki's feelings," you remark.

"Saki is my granddaughter," Wei points out. "My only grandchild. She is my pride, my legacy. It is my duty to at least learn more of the delinquent attempting to defile my family's legacy."

"Defile?" you scoff. "How about you look at you and your kid treated Saki like crap growing up first."

Wei is quick to change the subject. "I'm surprised to hear you wish to leave the academy for a time. I expected you hearing that I was leaving on a weekend trip would be an ample opportunity for you to further tear up your... what would you youths call it? Your... stomping grounds."

"My turf."

"Yes, that."

Wei looks out onto the river. "All too well..."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rK6piEsS-2E

As you set out, the conversation turns quiet again. Wei is focused on the ship, while you sit in the back and relax. At least Wei isn't the only person around to talk to.

"Ryoji, something tells me you won't enjoy this trip."

"You're a regular detective, Nina."

"At least you have me around to keep you company!"

"And me!" another familiar voice calls out in your head, which causes you to jump.

"GAH!" you exclaim, causing Wei to look over to you.

"GAH!" the voice exclaims back.

"It's just a bee," Wei remarks, before returning to his sailing.

That voice was... Hoshi?

"How the hell did you start speaking in my head?" You think to yourself.

"I-it's a p-pretty neat spell, right?" Hoshi remarks. "I'm sorry! I wasn't brave enough to say goodbye to you in person!"

"I'm just going on a weekend trip," you reply.

"B-But goodbyes are hard!" Hoshi explains. "E-even if they're just for a weekend! I hid in my room from all the pressure!"

Another voice comes into your head, Reiji's. "It's true, I found her cowering under her blankets with a stuffed bear."

"T-that's not true! Okay... it is..." Hoshi mumbles.

"It's what kept me from seeing you off," Reiji responds. "But with this spell I can bid you good luck. Principal Wei is likely not the most... entertaining of trip partners."

"Wait, with this spell..." Nina mutters. "Can they hear me?"

"AH, GIRL'S VOICE!" Hoshi exclaims. "How did... oh right, this is that spirit in your head, right? Saki told me about it... N-Nina, right?"

"Nina's spirit and memory, but yes," she responds.

"A-a pleasure to finally speak to you..." she remarks.

Reiji's voice turns solemn. "Nina... it was my actions that lead to your original death. I cannot even begin to apologise, as nothing I can say can make up for that..."

"In the end, you helped save Ryoji, right?" Nina assures him. "That's enough for me."

"Okay, did you two just use a spell to wish me good luck?" you ask. "Or is there something else?"

"W-well, I thought I could use these to keep tabs on the trip, send updates to the others..." Hoshi explains. "That is... if that's okay with you?"

"A-are you sure?" Hoshi wonders. "What if something bad happens?"

"I doubt an Archdemon is just gonna pop out of nowhere while we're on this trip," you remark.

As Reiji speaks, you can actually sense him pushing up his glasses in classic fashion. "I wouldn't rule out the possibility."

"What's the worst that can happen?" you laugh to yourself. "We get attacked by a giant fish? Anything that happens, we can handle it. Have a fun weekend, you two. Go on a date or something?"

Even without the two in front of you, you can feel the meltdown of nerves, babbling and stuttering between the two of them.

"O-o-o-okay!" Hoshi finally blurts out. "H-have fun, bye!"

The two disconnect, as Nina lets out a sigh. "It's strange communicating with other people... usually it's just you."

"Hey, I'm interesting enough company on my own!" you laugh... before a trout is thrown at your face. "Hey, what the hell!"

"You skipped breakfast, didn't you?" Wei remarks. "Do you not know how important breakfast is? Trout is rich in protein, and the Omega-3 acids it produces is richer than any-"

"Alright, I don't need a lecture!" you sigh. "Do you expect to teach me how to eat it too?"

Wei nods. "There's an electric hot cooker behind you, you can use that."

"You're actually telling me how to eat it!" You exclaim.

Wei pauses as he looks out onto the water. "You're from Kibo, aren't you? That's a fishing village. I'm sure you and your father had plenty of times fishing out on the docks together."

You eyes hang low. "I... don't remember most of those times, but yeah. How did you know about Kibo? It's fairly obscure."

"A former classmate of mine came from that village," Wei explains. "Satoshi Tenzan. We nicknamed him... well, he nicknamed himself TenKozy."

You tilt your head back. "Wait, THE Tenkozy? He was the original delinquent master! Every troublemaker in Kibo was inspired by his toughness."

"You're beginning to make more sense," Wei replies. "But yes, I knew him well. Better than anyone, I would say."

"I had no idea he went to the academy..." you mutter. "Actually, you never mention the original class."

Wei shrugs. "Their histories are there to read."

"You expect me to read anything?" you reply. "But there's nothing really about them around the school. Not even a class photo... one of those would have really helped with the Alice mystery... there's just a couple paintings of the founders and that's it."

"I..." Wei mutters, before casting his line out again. "I don't like to think of those days."

>You don't? Didn't you meet your wife at the school?

Wei looks out on the open waters. He hasn't properly looked at you once during this whole journey.

"That's... part of what makes it so difficult."

A silence breaks out between the two of you, as you cast your line out on the river.

A long, long silence. You don't catch a single fish. Neither does Wei.

"Feels like the river is empty," you remark. "It's usually a good season for it. Maybe something scared them off..."

"Ryoji."

Wei has his back turned to you as he speaks. "You asked about my old classmates."

"That... was about two hours ago, but sure," you reply.

"I'll tell you," Wei explains. "A story I have never told anyone before. Mitsuo often asked, but I never told him much of my time in the academy."

"Why?" you ask. "And why me?"

"I don't know," Wei responds. "And if you ask more nosy questions I'll rescind it. Just sit there and shut up."

"Tall order."

Wei grumbles. "You have been through so much in the last year... I attended the first three years of the school's existence."

"It's not a contest of tragedy," you joke.

"I know," Wei responds. "But I have my tales to tell."

"Do they come with their own theme tune?" you ask.

Wei finally turns his head to you, snarling. "What?!"

You wave your hand. "Running joke. Kazuma in year one listens to music all the time and he keeps calling what he listens to his theme tune."

"Real life doesn't have... theme tunes," Wei remarks. "Now... allow me to tell you... the tale of ages past. The original story of the Dakugeto Institute of Higher Edu-"

"Just call it Dark Gate Academy, it sounds cooler."

>POV SHIFT: WEI KOBASHI
>APRIL, 1951

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOP_OHmUNfk

"Wei Kobashi... I've looked through all your records, your parent's recommendation, and I think this Academy is the perfect place to whip a coward like you into shape."

You roll your eyes as you lean back in your chair. "I'm no coward... and I doubt it's wise to praise a school that simply opened."

Kenta Misawa, one of the pair of brothers running this new military academy slams his fist on his desk. "I have faith in my power of discipline and training! You won't survive out there if you don't heed my warnings!"

He's enthusiastic, no doubt. Some would say manic. "I doubt the world will see another great war for a while," you respond.

"There's more threats out there than human wars," Kenta explains, a near sadistic grin on his face. "Oh yes... you'll learn soon enough. The threats that none know about. You have a special potential, and I am prepared to draw it out."

You sigh. You still can't believe your parents did this to you... your father has always been a harsh, at times cruel man, but to be told you were a disgrace to the Kobashi family line? That you had to enter this strange military academy or be disowned for being too... soft? It's not your fault you were too young to fight in the war? Did he expect you to handle a rifle, to fly a plane at nine years of age?

"Now, get going!" Kenta Misawa with rigid arm flailing points you to the door to his office. "The information assembly for our class will be at the first bell! No time ti dilly-dally or you'll never survive! You will learn this school's nature in time!"

You leave the office and shake your head. You'll never survive? Why does he keep saying that? He sounds like a rambling lunatic, chair of discipline or no. You hope the other brother, the proper principal of the school is more reasonable. You doubt it.

Regardless, the assembly where they "Explain All" isn't until first bell. What doom and gloom... did your parents sign you up for some kind of secret society? You never had the adventurous spirit for anything like that... no doubt why they considered you a coward. What's wrong with relaxing? All you want to do in life is lie down in a patch of flowers and watch the clouds. Is that really so strange? Responsibility will never fit you.

If the assembly isn't until first bell, you suppose you've got some time to spare. You don't know these halls well, but you were shown your locker before being brought to the office, and the cafeteria should be near here...

>Head to your locker

You've never been adventurous, and you're not going to risk getting lost. You head straight for your locker because that's the only route you know. Safe, simply, easy.

You really don't belong in this academy. There must have been some kind of mix-up. You head to your locker, and begin opening it for a change of shoes. But it's then that you notice someone lying up against the wall. Seems to be... another student? Blonde hair, a mismatched uniform, she lies up against the wall like she's... having a nap?

>POV SHIFT: RYOJI

"Oh yeah," you remark. "I almost forgot you knew Alice before she became, well..."

"I thought I told you to be quiet," Wei grumbles. "The story is just beginning."

>POV SHIFT: WEI

You hunker down next to the young woman and shake her shoulder. "Ma'am? You okay?"

Nothing, she's fast asleep, her head tilted back. So odd... she's completely motionless. Wait... what if she isn't asleep? Did you just stumble on a medical emergency? Could she be... oh, god...

"Ma'am, please answer me!" you add, more frantically as you shake her shoulder. Then, her eyes swing open... and her head swings forward. Right into your face.

A stream of blood bursts out as you fall back from the rather hard headbutt, as the girl simply wipes her eyes and yawns. "That was a good dream..." she mumbles, before noticing you. "Oh? Are you okay, stranger? Who are you? Did you enter my dream zone?"

You assume "dream zone" means "headbutting distance" with this weirdo.

>Dammit Lady, I think you broke my nose!
>I thought you were dead, are you okay?

The girl wipes her eyes some more, her vision clearing as she properly wakes up. "Your... oh! Did I do that?"

"Yes!" you yell, clutching your bleeding nose.

"I really got you in the schnoz, huh?" she ponders, her head jerking around to examine you.

"The schnoz?" you mutter.

The girl reaches into her bag and pulls out some tissues and hands them to you, allowing you to wipe the blood from your face. "You'll be okay... probably."

You sigh. "I was more worried about you. You looked dead."

"I was just snoozing!" she explains.

You eye the girl carefully. "In the hallway?"

"Where do you snooze before class?"

"I get a good night's sleep in my bed!"

The girl shrugs as she stands up. "So did I, but it's never the wrong time for an extra snooze. I'm Alice! Alice Maddox!"

"Oh, you're English?"

"Half," she explains. "Most people call me Alisa, anyway."

You shake your head. "Well that's not what you introduced yourself as, so I won't call you that. Alice, it is."

Alice raises an eyebrow. "Ha, you're weird."

"I'M weird?" you reply incredulously.

You reach into your jacket and pull out a pocket watch. A gift from your father. "First bell soon, do you know where the assembly hall is?"

Alice places a finger to her chin. "Assembly? Oh right, I remember! Follow me!"

As you walk down the hall, she turns to you. "That's a fancy watch, by the way. Your family must be rich."

"We have... wealth, yes," you admit.

Alice shakes he head, but still keeps a cheery smile. "My family isn't. We live here in the village. I hope my sister gets to join the school too next year, so we can be together!"

"Why would you wish someone join a military academy?" you remark. "Why would you even be in a military academy?"

"It's close to my house," Alice explains. "I can't afford to travel anywhere further."

Necessity, huh? You suppose you're much in the same boat... not supposed to be here at all. Really, there must have been some kind of mix-up.

Alice leads you to the assembly hall, where more of the students have begun to gather in preparation for the all important assembly.

The air in the room is... strange. Something about this school has never quite sit right since the moment you arrived... and you get the strange feeling that this isn't just a military academy.

"Please don't be a cult, please don't be a cult..." you mutter to yourself, when you hear some commotion in the corner of the hall.

"I think it's best that you back off!"

The voice comes from a young man with red hair, standing like a valiant princely hero in front of a nervous girl with blue hair and before a... is that supposed to be another student? He's giant! You're a tall man yourself, standing at about 6 feet and 7 inches, and many have remarked on your height. But this boy... this man dwarfs even you, and he doesn't carry your lean build. He's rippling with bulging muscles and hair, like a grizzly bear turned human.

The giant student scoffs. "Oh come on, we were just having a friendly chat. Stop trying to impress the girly."

"I wasn't trying to-" the red-haired boy begins. "And besides, you were clearly scaring her with all that talk of hunting."

"I... don't like to think about blood..." the girl mutters, looking away.

"Oh please," the giant laughs. "You should learn to appreciate the tales of the beasts I've conquered. The Naito clan are a proud breed. We live in the mountains, feast on what we kill, and the oldest son is destined to be the largest living human when he's fully grown. We're a physical marvel! Any lady would be impressed."

"That doesn't give you the right to bother a stranger," the boy adds.

The larger boy... Naito, he said his surname was... frowns and grunts. "We ain't strangers. We'll be getting to know each-other for three years. And you know..."

He cracks his knuckles. "My pops always said the best way to know someone is to fight them first."

The mountain man looms over the redhead, who is quite short for his age, but the smaller kid doesn't back down at all, standing stoic before him.

"A fight breaking out before the first class..." a confident blonde haired student remarks, standing next to an equally cool and collected student. "Mitsuharu, should we break it up?"

"No brother," Mitsuharu notes. "I want to see where this goes."

Well, you certainly don't. You want as little fights to break out as possible around here. You begin to walk up to the scene, and the tall boy's eyes dart towards you. "And what do you want, lanky?"

>Don't pick on a small guy like that. If you want to bother someone, bother me.

>You don't want to mess with the redhead. I saw him kick the asses of four guys at once before coming here.

The tall man looks at the redhead, who looks awfully confused. He then darts his eyes to you, then back to the redhead, then to the girl with blue hair, before letting out a belly laugh. "Oh, that's great!" He pulls you and the other boy into a clinch, chuckling as he does. "Something tells me you'll both be great classmates! We should definitely fight sometime!"

You both break away as he eyes you, comparing heights. "Heh, you're a big guy, almost as tall as me," he remarks. "Put some actual meat on those bones and we could be great rivals! Every Naito needs a good rival! What's your name?"

"Wei Kobashi."

"Wei?" he smirks. "Toshiaki, pleased to meet ya."

He presses a closed fist up to your chest, rather quickly. You were worried he was trying to cheapshot you in the ribs.

"Did... did you really beat up four men?" the girl asks after Toshiaki walks off.

"N-no, not at all!" the redhead waves his arms frantically, trying to explains. "I think that was a little joke on... uhh, Wei's part here!"

"Only a slight exaggeration," you give a small playful smile as you nudge the boys elbow.

"I'm Jun, by the way..." the redhead continues. "Jun Shusaku."

"A-and I'm Kyoko..." the girl mutters, shying away. "Kyoko Hasegawa."

"Do you often pick fights with people twice your height?" you ask Jun.

Jun nods. "When someone needs help, wouldn't you?"

You shrug. "Not usually my problem. Then again, I got sent here for being a coward, so what do I know?"

"A... coward?" Jun mutters. "Don't you know the value of fighting for what's right, laying your life on the line in the name of what's good-"

"Don't give me the honour speech, you'll sound like my father," you remark.

Jun shakes his head? "Honour? I'm talking about the right thing to do. You stepped in and helped me out, don't you believe in doing the right thing?"

"I see..." Jun mutters. "Well, thank you for your help anyway. By the way, that bleeding nose, what actually-"

"She headbutted me," you explain, pointing to Alice... who is currently letting her head droop as if she's about to fall asleep on her feet.

Kyoko gasps. "W-w-why did she-"

"It was an accident," you reply.

A muscular student come over and places his hand on your shoulder with a confident smirk. "Oh I get it. Making advances on a girl and she had the guts to tell you to back off? I respect that! I love me a strong woman-"

"It was nothing like that," you sigh. "Don't go painting me as some pervert... whoever you are."

"Koji Maita," the boy smirks, pumping his fist. "And let me tell ya, if that Naito wants a rival he's got a perfectly good one right here! You're not gonna stand in my way, are you?"

"Go ahead," you reply. "Why would I care?"

You let out a sigh as you begin to walk away. Damn, this school is likely filled with meatheads like that. You don't want any part of it.

As you walk by, a toned girl who looks american turns to another who looks half-English, like Alice. They're speaking english while looking at you. Your English is limited, but you can tell that the one with the american accent is telling the other to "check out the beanpole". Her white-haired companion doesn't seem too interested.

Before you can respond, you hear it. The first bell, assembly is ready.

And immediately, on the dot, the door is kicked open by Kenta Misawa, yelling at the top of his lungs. "STRICT PUNCTUALITY IS THE KEY TO A DILIGENT STUDENT! IF YOU AREN'T DILIGENT, YOU'LL NEVER SURVIVE OUT THERE!"

Behind him follows the much less manic brother... Momota. The two of them looks so young... far too young to be running a school like this together. What are their credentials? They have no record of military experience, but the apparently work with the government.

"That's him...?" you hear some whispers as Momota strides to the podium. "Wow! He's far cooler than the other principal!"

"He looks so mysterious!"

Enraged at the small furor, Kenta Misawa kicks the podium aside and off the stage, where some students have to dodge it. "Wow, scary..."

"WE DEMAND YOUR RAPT ATTENTION!" He exclaims. "THIS ACADEMY IS LIKE NO OTHER, AND YOU WILL ALL BE WHIPPED INTO SHAPE!"

Momota reaches the stage, and stands in front of his brother. The raging Kenta falls back, as Momota addresses the crowd in a cool monotone, his hands in his pockets the entire time. "It's good to see nobody chose to ditch assembly... as it's about time we were honest with you about the nature of this school."

Whispers abound in the assembly, as Alice wakes herself up next to you. "Something happening?"

True nature? What the hell could he mean.

"The fact of the matter... and this will appear difficult to believe, but this is no mere military academy. Those of you here were chosen, you all have a special innate gift. You are not normal humans, but those with a special potential, and you have been brought here to be trained. Trained to face the great secret threat of humanity."

"And what's that?" Toshiaki calls out.

"Demons."

A long silence breaks out in the auditorium. Nobody speaks, outside of the occasional mumbling.

"Did... did he just say..." Jun mutters.

>It just had to be a cult didn't it?

Demons? Only one thing can explain that kind of response. Of course... this is some kind of crazy deluded cult. Not a school.

"I understand," Momota states to the confused and frightened crowd of students. "Most of you don't take us seriously. But my statement is true."

"Those of you among us are special!" Kenta exclaims. "You may not believe our words now, but soon you will understand... and awaken to your true potential!"

True... potential?

Well, you certainly doubt that. You have no potential, you've already hit your peak.

"I can believe it..." one voice says. "This school has been far too mysterious for anything but..."

"But the supernatural? You really believe that?"

"I can, yes."

"Demons... what do you think, Shohei?"

You look to the tall, blonde haired Shohei, looking like a typical hero from some western comic book. He doesn't react at all, other than what seems to be a slight smile as he looks ahead.

"Finally, a true test for my skills..." a cocky looking student speaks to himself.

"That's your response?" his friend remarks with a smile. "Calm down, Fuchi-san."

All the mutterings of students are eventually cut through... by another student hopping onto the stage. A girl with brown hair and a ribbon... and a stern face. Nobody knows how to react when she stands in the path of the principals.

"WHAT THE HECK IS THIS?" she exclaims, placing her hands on her hips and standing firm before the two of them.

"Ex... cuse me?" Momota pauses.

"What kind of school doesn't inform the student body of their curriculum ahead of time?!" she badgers them. "If demons are on the itinerary, you should tell us beforehand! Put it in the pamphlets! And what's your plan for Mathematics? Chemistry? Natural History? This is a disgrace, and we as students demand better!"

>Did... did you miss the part where he said demons?

The girl glares at you with angry eyes, puffing out her cheeks with her hands on her hips. "So, what of it? Ghosts, demons, monsters, unicorns, whatever! None of them stand as an excuse to jeopardise our development and education!"

"How is that what you're worried about?!" you exclaim.

"Who is this lunatic..." one voice mutters.

The girl on stage develops a smirk as she stands where the podium once was. "Glad you asked! The name is Mizuki Yamazaki, and don't you forget it!"

>POV SHIFT: RYOJI

"Hang on... THAT'S how you met your wife?" you mutter.

Wei grunts. "You say that like she was my wife at the time..." he replies. "When we first met she was just another strange person from that day... yet she was both the most sane I had met... and the weirdest. It was difficult to pin her down."

"And I'm guessing that Kenta guy..." you pause, making note of the last name. Misawa... so Yamato's family dated back to the founders of the school. No wonder he had such a chip on his shoulder. Hopefully his little brother won't meet the same fate. "Really let her have it for interrupting that speech."

"Well, keep listening and you will find out," Wei remarks... is that a coy smile on his face. Not at all what you expected...

>POV SHIFT: WEI

So this will be your homeroom. And these strange people... they'll be your class. You're still not sure you understand this talk of exorcising demons or whatever fantasy story you've been fed... you don't think any of the class has truly registered that information. After all, what do you say to such a thing.

"Is she still out there?" Kyoko asks to a girl by the window.

"Yeah..." she notes. "I believe she's on lap 20 of the track."

"And how many times did the disciplinary chair make her run?" Jun asks.

"100."

You wince as you look outside. The girl... Mizuki... she's still running, drenched in sweat and if you saw her up close, likely with tears streaming from her eyes. Yet she continues.

"What a fool..." the other tall handsome student next to Shohei mutters. You believe the two are brothers, with the same last name in the registry. Shohei and Mitsuharu Inoki. "What did that foolish girl expect to achieve?"

"I can respect it," the cocky looking boy looks out the window with a smirk. "I can appreciate a lady who speaks her mind."

"Not when her mind is filled with rubbish," Mitsuharu replies. "Now, what is the seating arrangement?"

"There... doesn't seem to be one," Jun remarks. "We all sit where we want, I suppose? There's a lot of free desks."

As the class begin to find their own seats, you snap free from looking at the girl on the running tracks who has now dropped to her knees and is loudly cursing god. A few empty seats... where to go... a lot of figures leap out to you.

>Sit with Alice, Kyoko and Jun

You make your way over to the free chair that intersects between Alice, Kyoko and Jun.

"It okay if I sit here?" you ask.

"Umm... okay..." Kyoko mumbles, her eyes darting away from you.

You place your hands in your pockets. "That didn't sound too enthusiastic."

"Sorry..." she murmurs. "I'm just... nervous around people."

"Help yourself," Jun adds as he offers up the seat to you. You sit down as he pulls out a notebook. "So... what brings you to this school in the first place?"

"After the news we got, you're going with smalltalk?" you respond.

Jun shrugs. "What's the protocol for being told your military academy is actually training you to fight ghouls and goblins?"

"It's like that American picture!" Alice exclaims. "You can be Abbot, I can be Costello and-"

"I doubt we'll have as fun a time as them," you reply.

Alice shakes her head. "No, they didn't have a fun time. They had to deal with Dracula, Frankenstein's monster and The Wolfman all in the same day!"

The brown-haired girl who was by the window earlier is sitting next to Alice when she turns her head to her. "You... do understand the concept of fiction, right?"

"Of course!" Alice exclaims. "I know the difference between reality and fantasy-land!"

As you prepare your notepad and pencil, Alice pulls out a book and begins to read. "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland?" the brown-haired girl remarks. "A bit on the nose, don't you think?"

Jun leans over to you. "You didn't tell me what brought you here."

"The usual," you explain. "Lazy son is a huge disgrace to his family, sent to military school to set him straight. And you?"

"Kinda the opposite," Jun explains. "My mother never wanted me to go. My father died serving."

"But you went anyway because..."

Jun pauses. "I want to be strong enough to help people. That probably sounds awfully sentimental, like a cheesy Hollywood picture, right?"

>That's putting it lightly, I would have been more insulting.

>That's putting it lightly, I would have been more insulting.

"Yeah, I guess so..." Jun mutters, as he shifts in his chair.

Eventually, the sliding doors swing open and Kenta Misawa enters the room, with the same manic energy as ever.

"IT IS NOW TIME FOR THE BRIEFING!" Kenta explains. "COME SUNDOWN, YOU WILL BE INITIATED INTO THE WORLD OF DEMONS..."

"And what's that called again?" a white-haired boy asks.

"THE DARKWORLD!" Kenta exclaims.

The white haired boy can't contain a laugh as he leans back in his chair. He clearly doesn't believe this.

"BUT AT THIS MOMENT!" Kenta continues as he moves to the chalkboard. "We will be going over the official schedule and dorm arrangements for your time here! LISTEN CLOSE! I am not a man who repeats himself! If you spend too much time repeating yourself, you never progress, and if you never progress, you'll never survive!"

He's been repeating that statement all day...

"What about Mizuki?" a voice in the class asks. "Shouldn't she be here for class?"

"Yamazaki is already receiving her valued education outside!" Kenta announces.

Harsh...

After the class period, you and the others are let out for lunch. There's still a good number in your new class you haven't spoken to yet. There's the two foreign girls, the cocky guy and his cool-headed friend... there's also a few oddities among the group. The white-haired ruffian looking kid, who you see butting heads with another tough looking guy with a bandanna... does he think he's a biker or something? Clearly a delinquent.

There's also two eccentrically dressed girls, one a redhead in what seems to be some experimental high-fashion dress with no regard for uniform. The other with pink hair, who seems to have put together a make-shift costume with a vibrant red cape and hat.

You also spot the brown-haired girl who was sitting next to Alice who seemed to have some sense about her... she's speaking with a girl with long hair who appears to be wearing a face-mask, looking like some kind of ninja. And then there's those two brothers... who stand stoicly and mysteriously as the founding brothers of the school. Just what is this collection of freaks? Are you as weird as them? Is being a weirdo what it takes to be "chosen" and "special" for this supernatural school? Oh well, better introduce yourself...

>Talk to the brothers

Shohei and Mitsuharu Inoki... the pair are quite an intimidating sight. Nobody else in class seems willing to go near them out of some kind of fear, yet you, the self-professed coward have no issue with swaggering up with your hands in your pockets. "You two don't look much like brothers," you point out from the outset.

"Is that so?" Mitsuharu mutters. "And what gave you that impression?"

"You have the same build," you respond. "But different hair and different face... plus it's odd that you're in the same year of school. Unless you're twins."

Mitsuharu glares at you. He has a stern, cold face. The kind of face you can't imagine smiling unless it was inflicting pain on a puppy. Shohei however gives a warm smile and places a hand on his hip. "You're quite astute, Kobashi-san. We are in fact half-brothers. Our mutual father apparently liked to sow his oats."

"Didn't need to know that last part..." you mumble. "So what brings the two of you to the academy?"

"The Misawa brothers are friends of the family," Shohei explains. "We grew up in this village."

"So... do you believe them?"

Shohei nods. "Without a doubt. Momota and Kenta aren't liars, and they aren't madmen."

"You don't seem so fazed," you add.

Mitsuharu looks off into the distance. "The village of Dakugeto has a... long history. Stories of a demon invasion has always been common folklore among the townsfolk, and the hill on which this school was built was home to many of the superstitions. I personally look forward to coming face to face with a demon."

"The idea of banishing evil is quite a thrilling one," Shohei admits.

"Not that," Mitsuharu explains. "Demons are more interesting than humans."

Shohei shakes his head, ignoring the strange statement. It seems he's used to Mitsuharu making creepy comments. "And what of you, Kobashi? Do you believe it?"

>Honestly... I do. I don't know why, but it feels true.

"A fair mindset to have," Shohei nods. "You're quite the reasonable man, Kobashi."

You shrug. "My father never felt the need to teach me much... but my mother was able to teach me common sense, at least. I'm not going to make a definitive statement on anything that I don't know for certain."

"That sounds quite boring to me," Mitsuharu remarks, folding his arms. "What kind of a man cannot even commit to his own thoughts, to never be certain of something unless it's shown to him? Who can never make an informed hypothesis?"

"Me," you reply. "That describes me. I just said as much. And I see nothing wrong with it."

Mitsuharu looks at you, seemingly sizing you up. You worry that he might be ready to throw a punch or the like. "Clever... I have a feeling you aren't very smart, Kobashi. But you are clever."

"I'll take it," you reply, before making your way out to the courtyard. You're in need of some fresh air, and as you step out and take a deep breath...

... God, she's still there. You would say she's still running, but eventually her muscles gave way. Instead, Mizuki Yamazaki is lying face down in a planking position in the middle of the track.

"I can make it..." she mutters. "One more lap... I won't neglect my duty... if I just... caterpillar my way..."

She attempts to move her legs and push her body forward in a caterpillar crawl. She manages one before remaining in the planking position, whining in pain.

You walk up to her, hands in your pockets. "I'm surprised you aren't dead."

"Who goes there?!" she yells, pulling her head up just enough to spot you. "Oh, you're that troublesome student who challenged me."

"Troublesome? Challenged you?" you respond. "Speak for yourself, lady. I'm not the idiot who interrupted a big revelation with talk of school curriculums."

Mizuki groans. "No matter, if you step out of my sunlight I can gather enough energy to... make it through my final lap..."

She attempts another caterpillar crawl, and gets the same result. "Perhaps if I try rolling..."

You sigh. "I barely know you... but I can already tell you're the most stubborn person I've ever met. And that's saying something. My father would always call me impossibly stubborn."

"Did you come over her to mock me?" Mizuki asks.

Mizuki plants her face into the ground, seemingly hiding her red angry face. "Laugh it up..." she mutters. "But I'll show you! I'll finish my punishment with my perfect rolling technique!"

"I am serious about my curiosity," you state. "I'm not making fun of you there. Well, I am a little."

"Why wouldn't I stand up on that stage?" she explains. "They misled us when they brought us here. Those brothers chose to conceal the truth of what we were doing, when they should have just been honest! I was frustrated, as any rational person who cares about their education would be! Wouldn't you?"

"I don't care much about my education," you respond. "Or at all, really."

"Well, I'm not a slacker!" Mizuki fires back, still wiggling and trying to move the entire time. "I actually apply myself! And I was frustrated!"

You shrug. "So? I'm frustrated and annoyed by lots of things. Like your weird yelp of pain that sounds like a cat being run over by car."

"I'm not in pain!" Mizuki insists despite all evidence to the contrary. "My muscles are just being... uncooperative!"

"Sure... but I don't make a big scene complaining about that screech in your face. I just sit back, and bear it."

Mizuki shakes her head. "Well, that's not what I was taught. Ever since I was young, I always thought I was... insignificant. Small..."

"You are small," you point out the facts.

"Easy talk coming from a jellybean!" she fires back.

"You mean a bean-pole," you correct her.

"Whatever! Point is... I was taught that if I let myself feel small, then I'd become small. When it comes time to say something, to speak my mind, I'm not allowed to shy away from it! I just do it! When I have a task to complete, I don't give up, I do it! When I have to run 100 laps as punishment, I will do it, even if I have to roll my way to completion!"

Mizuki pants, out of breath from her exerting herself while giving the speech. "Does... does that make sense?"

You shrug. "I'd give up."

"You're right," she remarks. "You are stubborn!"

It takes until the end of break for Mizuki to eventually roll across the line of the last lap. A pathetic display, using all she had long after her body gave in... yet you wasted first break just... watching it unfold. You could have walked away at any time, you wouldn't have to watch this, you wouldn't have to be berated by this minuscule crackpot... but you didn't. You don't know why. You probably never will.

Maybe you just didn't have anything better to do.

"Need a hand?" you ask her as she lays planked across the finish line.

"... No..." she mutters, but you help her to her feet anyway. "Hey, I said no! I'm not taking any help from a slacker!"

"Don't worry," you explain as you walk with her back inside, "this will be the last time."

"... So that was when you first spoke, huh?" you ask.

Wei looks out over the water. "Yes, it was."

"Sounds like you didn't get along..." you mutter. Huh... that kind of reminds you of someone.

Wei lets out a small laugh... Wei, laughing. What has the world come to?

"She thought I was a stubborn lazy fool, and i thought she was a stubborn busybody fool... we couldn't stand each-other."

You give a nod, as you cast your line out on the boat once more. "So that's it, huh? How you met your wife. The End?"

"That's not the story I'm telling," Wei explains. "I'm telling you my whole story. All of it. And it's only beginning."

You pause. "... Why?"

Wei pauses himself. "I... want you to hear it?"

"That doesn't sound right at all," you joke.

"I know, it doesn't... but I do," he repeats.

"Why?"

"That's one question too many," Wei tells you. "Just know that I want you to know this, Ryoji."

Aye, you can accept that.

"So... what happened next?" you ask.

"Oh, you're interested?" Wei scowls. "And here I was thinking the young delinquent was bored out of his skull."

"It's the most interesting thing on this boat," you smirk. "It's just a very low bar."

Wei looks away... is he hiding a laugh?

"Very well. So next came my first night in the Darkworld..."

"GET DOWN, DAMMIT!"

Koji pushes you aside, saving you what seemed to be a screaming jack-o-lantern flying through the air, with the face of a wolf. As you pick yourself up, you look around.

The Brothers didn't lie.

As they do battle with these creatures, you need to get a load of your bearings. You look down to the sword they provided you with... you can't believe it.

Once night hit, you fell through the floor, into a world of red skies and you saw... this. Monstrocities as far as the eye can see. Twisted landscapes, an oppressive weight in the air, and these creatures that can't even be described outside of the abstract visions of a nightmare... yet you can see them. You can process them with your own eyes. And when your sight lay upon the crows with giant eyeballs for heads, the ballooned floating masquerade masks, the worms with exteriors of nothing but teeth... you were filled with many feelings. Fear, shock, wonder, amazement, even more fear...

But most importantly... power.

You don't know why, but just seeing these things sent a surge through your body, like everything was receiving volts of electricity running through it, coursing through your veins, all at once. You feel... alive. The sword the brother's provided you felt heavy when it was first handed to you, yet now it feels like an extension of your arm. When Koji pushed you out of the way, you flew several feet from the force of his impact. And you barely even felt it. Is this what they meant when they said true potential?

"Ha, now here's a true challenge for my skills!" the cocky boy remarks as he cuts through one of the beasts. Just a moment ago, he was nothing more than an ordinary student, and now he's moving like something out of an american comic book. Is this a dream?

"Look out!" Jun exclaims as he cuts through a monster in front of Mizuki, who is carrying a sword of her own with confidence.

"I-I had that!" Mizuki exclaims. "Don't take away my opportunities, mister!"

But not all are taking to it so readily. The cool-headed boy looks now like he's having a panic attack, Kyoko is hunkering down crying while being protected by Toshiaki, and Alice is hiding behind a rock, her eyes uncharacteristically wide with fear.

You grip your sword tight. You... never wanted to fight. But now you feel like you have to.

More notably, you now feel like you CAN.

You hear Kyoko scream in terror.

You look around you, trapped in this bizarre battlefield. Your feet are unsteady as you grip the blade.

"You're useless, son..."

Your father's voice rings out in your head.

"You refuse to fight. You refuse to stand for anything. All to serve yourself. The Dragon of the Kobashi name... you'll never be deserving..."

You know what you want to do. You want to turn tail and run away. You want no part of this.

You never wanted any part of anything.

"Life doesn't come through on a breeze, son... it's a rough rapid, a storm of winds and waves, and if you refuse to just... MOVE... you'll be swept away. Now... move."

You shake your head. You don't want to.

Then you see one coming towards Alice. Another coming for Mizuki. Another for Jun.

Only a day... you've only known them a day...

And just like that...

Everything clicks.

"WHOA!" a girl exclaims, bow in hand. "WHERE'S KOBASHI BLASTING TOO!"

You're fast now. Faster than you anticipated, in moments you are standing in front of Alice, and cutting through one of those flying lanterns like it was butter.

"Thanks!" Alice exclaims, but you pay no mind. You're now beside Mizuki, taking out the beast coming in to flank her.

"How did a slacker like you..." she mutters, but now you're back to back with Jun.

Jun laughs as you take out another. "You're... good."

You let out a primal yell, one from deep in your gut, one you've been holding onto for a long time. You're covered in a black sludge... is this their blood? They evaporate when they die, and the sludge begins to clear from you. You jump into the fray proper, swinging left and right. You see them all. And you're going to stop them all.

"Send him back!" Kenta Misawa yells. "That's reckless behaviour!"

"You think you can stop him?!" Toshiaki laughs. "NOW THIS IS AN ATTITUDE! I LIKE IT! HEY KOBASHI, YOU'RE OFFICIALLY MY RIVAL!"

Eventually, you wander too far, as Momota Misawa hops in and pulls you back from a larger cluster of beasts. "Don't get ahead of yourself, this is merely an introduction. I shall take care of the guardian."

"The guard-"

"The big one," Momota remarks, pointing to a gargantuan slug with arms crawling along the ground. They're all so grotesque... like something out of a painting.

Momota launches forward, his leaps taking him several dozen feet through the air. He readies his blade and cuts through the slug like he was felling a tree. Surgical, simple, like the size of the beast meant nothing to him.

And once it cleared, the world returned to normal. You fall through the floor and wind up back in the school auditorium where you started.

Several students vomit, but you look straight ahead.

"Are you crying?" Jun asks, as he looks to the tear streaming down your face. "It was definitely a scary experience... but I don't think anyone died."

"No..." you mutter. "I think I did."

"So... you were basically perfect from day one?"

Wei shakes his head. "Not perfect. But something... triggered within me that night. A power I've held on to since."

"I expected this story to be about your struggle to get to the top," you reply.

"That's not where my struggle lay..." Wei remarks. "So, the next day..."

>POV SHIFT: WEI

As you arrive in class the next day, you find Kenta Misawa there already with a clipboard. Seems you're finally getting a seating schedule. You know where you'll be sitting. By the back, your transfer test scores were frankly terrible after you spent the entire study period hanging out in the park and watching a caterpillar become a butterfly. You also look over to an eager seeming Mizuki. She cares so much about education, she'll likely be in the front row, if not head of class outright.

"The seating arrangements shall be determined by your previous academic records!" Kenta explains. "After all, this is still a school, and I intend to run it as one!"

"It's so casual..." Jun mutters. "Aren't they going to mention last night? I mean... demons are real. That wasn't a dream... we fought them. I still can't believe it."

"FIRST OFF, THE HEAD OF THE CLASS... SHOHEI INOKI!"

Shohei sits at the front and gives a silent, determined nod.

"NEXT WE HAVE... YUKARI SATO!"

The sensible seeming girl who carries a bow last night sits down and nods. "How unexpected... I'm honoured."

"AND NEXT IS... MITSUHARU INOKI!"

"Behind my brother... how shameful..." Mitsuharu snickers to himself, as creepy as ever.

"AND THEN WE HAVE... KUNIAKI FUCHI!"

The cocky boy sits in his chair and leans back with an upper-class sigh. "Oh bother... only fourth in the class? This doesn't show off my superior skills..."

He continues through the class listings, with name after name being called out... except Mizuki.

Finally, it reached the last row of the class. "IN THE LAST ROW IN ORDER, WE HAVE..."

"SATOSHI TENZAN!"

The delinquent in the bandanna sits down and immediately kicks back in his chair.

"WEI KOBASHI!"

You sit down with a shrug. As expected. Only third last in class.

"ALICE MADDOX!"

Alice sits down and immediately places her head in the desk in an attempt to sleep. No wonder how she had terrible grades.

Wait a minute... you take note of all the names called out, and the one seat left belongs to... no, that makes no sense...

"MIZUKI YAMAZAKI!"

She's last in the class?!

Mizuki sits down, and cross her arms, eyes closed with a determined huff. Immediately the buzz goes around the school.

"Wait, the girl so focused on education is dead last?" Yukari mutters.

"I mean... she only showed that she was diligent, not that she was smart."

"Here I was thinking she was some sort of intellectual dweeb," Satoshi points out. "But does this mean Yamazaki is actually a..."

"AN IDIOT?!" the class exclaims in unison as they all look back.

Mizuki simply keeps her eyes closed and her arms crossed in some kind of statement.

Yes, it was true... she was an idiot, who never excelled in academics despite her obnoxious enthusiasm. Seems her extreme desire is some kind of misplaced determination to... improve?

After the first lunch bell rings, you reach into your bag and pull out a boxed lunch. "I definitely made to much..." you remark. The dorms have their own kitchens, so this was your first time making your own food. "I should split this with someone..."

>Hey Alice, did you forget to make yourself lunch today?

>Satoshi, you seem like a guy who can eat.

You look over to Satoshi and hold up your spare food. The delinquent looks to you and kicks back in his chair. "Heh, and here I was planning to take that from you anyway," he jokes.

You move over to his desk and begin eating with the big guy. "So what brought you to this school?" you ask.

"I'm from a small fishing village called Kibo," he explains. "And I'm a bit of a local celebrity. Trust me, Dakugeto before long will be remembering the name TenKozy-"

"TenKozy?"

"That's my nickname!" he boasts. "My title!"

"But what does it mean?"

"Nothing!" he barks. "It just sounds cool! Anyway, my name's feared all over Kibo. I'm the damn Top Delinquent! Anyone who isn't pissing their pants when they see me is styling their hair after me!"

"Impressive," you note, as you continue to eat your lunch. This guy's a bit of an ass, but he doesn't seem too bad. Maybe it's because you offered him food.

"Anyway, I got busted one too many times," he explains. "I was about ready to be hauled off to juvenile detention... but then those brothers made a request for me to join their school. Pulled a few strings with the local government. I didn't understand it at the time... but I obviously do now. Did you see me take out that demon last night?"

You shrug. "I was a little busy myself."

As the two of you eat, the two foreign girls approach your table. Before they can speak, Satoshi already scoffs down his food and addresses the pair with a full mouth.

"Hey, American!" he yells, crumbs flying from his mouth. "You speak Japanese?"

"By all accounts, better than you," the girl replies. "I'm only half-american, darling."

"And you?" he says to the other.

"Half-English," she responds, adjusting her gloves. Damn, she's got a serious face... the american looks more relaxed, and somewhat flirtatious. "I'm Nancy Ueda. My american friend is-"

"Jackie Sato," she responds, taking your hand and kissing the back of it before swinging her hair back. "Pleasure to make your acquaintance."

Nancy scoffs. "This is hardly the time for that."

"Fun is fun, darling."

Satoshi smirks. "I see, you two ladies are looking to have fun with the two hunk-"

"No," Nancy states flatly. "Don't suggest that."

Satoshi laughs. "Okay, don't get your knickers in a twist. You seem tightly wound enough. Does being in the second row hurt your pride or something?" He scoots off from his table and gives you a pat on the shoulder. "I'm heading out. But stick with me, kid. I think I can make a proper delinquent, even out of a rich kid like you."

"I have zero interest in that, but whatever..." you remark.

As Satoshi walks out, Nancy flips her hair. "What a savage. I'm surprised to see a fellow upper-class student to eat with a ruffian like that."

"I'm not a snob," you reply. "Despite what my father tries to impart."

Jackie chuckles to herself. "Well darling, you should honestly try to be more selective. I know sleight of hand when I see it, and I believe he just left with something from your jacket pocket."

He... what? You pat down the inside of your jacket...

>Chase after him. You can't allow that.

You scoot your chair back and give a small bow to the girls. "Excuse me, I have a delinquent to catch."

You rush out of the homeroom, almost barrelling over Mizuki as you do. You rush after Satoshi as he casually walks down the hallway. "Hey!" you shout. "Give back my watch!"

Satoshi turns over to you and raises an eyebrow. "Watch? What watch?"

"Don't play dumb," you respond. "You swiped my watch from my pocket, I know you did!"

Satoshi grunts. "Listen here, we had a perfectly nice lunch. I should have figured a rich kid like you though would have come after me because of my rep. I didn't take a damn thing."

"Prove it," you reply. "Empty out your pockets."

"To hell with you!" Satoshi fires back. "How about we throw down? I'm happy to scrap with ya."

You begin to roll up your sleeves as Satoshi prepares himself as well, before a girl in your class, the one in the eccentric fashion runs up, accompanied by her friend. Mariko Yanagi, you believe she's called.

"The hell you want, Yanagi?" Satoshi asks.

Mariko places her hands together, clasping them tight as if she were praying. "Oh, my goodness..." she sighs in a melodramatic tone. "I can't allow to see you two boys fighting it out in the halls! After I saw you enjoying a meal together... a fine potential friendship imploding so soon... I may cry, or even faint!"

"Uhh..." you mutter, before Mariko places a hand on Satoshi's arm gently. Instantly, the tough delinquent melts with her touch.

"Oh, you'll return your friend's watch, won't you?" she says on the verge of tears. "For me?"

Satoshi turns bright red, like an embarrassed tomato. "Uhh... s-sure! Sure!" he says, as he reaches in and pulls out your pocket watch before handing it to you. "Here you go, pal."

"So you DID steal it!" you yell, but then Mariko turns to you. She has a cute, innocent face. The kind that holds unexpected power over one's sensibilities. She bats her eyelashes as she places her hand on your arm. A warm fuzzy feeling envelops you as she speaks.

"And please don't be mad," she gives a small pout, which only makes you feel warmer and fuzzier. "I think it's good to forgive and forget."

Your heart is racing...

"S-sure..." you mumble, and Mariko smiles.

"Thank you both," she says with a beautiful grin as she skips off.

Satoshi clutches his chest and hunkers down. "Dammit... I think I'm in love..."

"You aren't alone..."

Her friend in the eccentric hat and cape laughs and cuts a dynamic pose. "Haha, that's the effect Mariko will have! She's a special one, no doubt!"

"You've known her for long?"

The weird girl smirks, placing her hand atop her hat and swinging her free arm. "Of course! The tale of Mariko Yanagi and Maki Kyo is a long and storied one, a tale shrouded in mystery and intrigue!"

They were childhood friends. She's simply exaggerating.

"But it is why I've vowed to protect her with all of my... wait, Mariko! Don't skip off without me! I'm giving my speeeeeeeech!" she whines as she chases after her friend.

"Uhh... forgive and forget?" Satoshi remarks as he looks to you after the dust settles.

As you tense up your hand, your grip tight on his with your threat, Satoshi bursts into laughter. "Ha, I like you, Kobashi! I'm telling you, you'd make a hell of a delinquent one day!"

"Still not interested," you respond.

Satoshi continues to chuckle before he breaks the handshake and points behind you. "Oh, your girly's here."

"My what now?" you ask, as you turn around.

Instantly, you are grabbed by the tie and pulled through the hallways, into a small library room.

"What the hell?" you exclaim at Mizuki who dragged you in.

Mizuki doesn't look at you, grabbing some textbooks and slamming them hard on the table. She looks distraught.

"You okay?" you ask.

Mizuki looks up at you. "Don't give me that! You now are well aware of my secret shame!"

"That you're an idiot? It wasn't a secret."

"Don't call me an idiot, you slacker!" she yells, throwing a book at you. "But... I try my hardest all the time, and..."

You sigh, as you take the seat next to her. "Hey, don't be bummed out. You don't want to hear it from me, but I'm sure there's something you're naturally good at-"

Mizuki shakes her head, still upset. "You don't get it! You never try, but when you do it once you're brilliant! I always push myself forward, drive myself to be the best that I can be, and I still fall behind! Why is that?"

"Maybe... you should take it easy once in a while."

"Take it easy?"

"Yes," you nod. "You look to me like someone who's never taken the time to just lie down in the grass and watch the clouds roll by. Have you ever tried it?"

"How's that supposed to help?" she exclaims. "Ugh, you're impossible! Do you even know why I dragged you here?"

"Because you're crazy?"

"Because you're going to tutor me!" she exclaims. "And I'm going to tutor you! We'll work together, and advance to the top of the class!"

You shrug. "I don't really care about top of the class."

"You don't care about anything!"

"True!"

"And that's my side of the tutoring!" she explains. "You're going to impart on me some of your tricks for applying your skills, and I'll whip you into shape so you're no longer such a lazy slacker! Deal?"

"That sounds very one-sided."

"Answer the question, is it a deal or no?" she asks, extended her hand out. She looks away and cringes anxiously, not knowing if you'll accept or not.

"H-hey!" Mizuki exclaims. "HEY! Get back here, darn it!"

You walk towards the door as Mizuki struggles to get up, pratfalling over herself in her frantic bid to chase you.

As you step out the door, you bump into Alice, who is half asleep on her feet. "Oh, Wei!" she exclaims. "What are you up to?"

"Nothing," you reply.

"Except escaping!" Mizuki fires back. "Stop him, Alice!"

"Uhh... should I?" Alice asks.

You shrug. "Not really. She just wants us to tutor each-other."

"Oh, that sounds fun!" Alice exclaims. "Can I join?"

"It's not even a thing," you explain.

"Of course you can!" Mizuki smiles and places a hand on her shoulder. "We can all drive each-other to the front of the class!"

"But it's easier to nap in the back..."

Mizuki smirks as she waves her hand with confidence. "Oh trust me, you'll be a lot more comfortable when the three of us are succeeding together!"

"Together?!" Alice smiles, excitedly. "Wait, does that make us all friends?"

"I'm definitely not friends with her-"

"Sure, why not!" Mizuki replies. "As friends, we'll take eachother higher and higher! Nothing can stop us!"
>ONE MONTH LATER

"ALICE!"

You try to piece together what happened... it's all such a daze.

The group got separated in the incursion... that thing came at you... no, did Alice push you out of the way?

Then... then she got hit... and fell right off that cliff.

She... she saved you, but...

"ALICE! WHERE ARE YOU!"

"Dammit, keep moving!" Koji yells at you. "We need to find the others!"

"But Alice..." you mutter. "She got hit, and-"

"I SAW!" the frantic Koji mutters. "But... she's gone."

"I can't see her..." Sakura Hajimoto, the ninja of the class sighs. "No visual of her whereabouts at all."

Koji winces and shakes his head. "Dammit..."

Atsushi Kondo, the white haired kid who thinks of himself as rather cool slashes through a creature with his blade. "Hey, I get it but this isn't really the time to stop and think, unless we want to join her off that cliff."

"Be more respectful!" Koji yells at him, as he helps you to your feet.

You look about, frantically, over the edge to the rocks below. "I don't... she could still be there if we look for-"

"Look at that drop," Koji looks at you. "Tell me... do you think anyone could survive that?"

"... No."

Koji gives a solemn nod. "Right... so what are we going to do?"

"What?!" Koji exclaims. "Hey, don't do anything rash and-"

"Too late," Sakura sighs. "He's already in berzerker mode..."

You leap into the fray and are immediately swarmed by these small, quick jackal creatures. They jump on your back, piling on an trying to bite at your neck, but you launch them into the air, and with a great swing of your greatsword tear them in half. You rush to one of the goblin-like demons and connect your fist with it's face, planting it into the ground with force that cracks the earth beneath you, pummeling it to death.

In the last month you've proven to be a stand-out in combat among the class, but you have never pushed yourself this far. But something snapped inside you. Alice... your friend...

"Stop him before he gets us all killed!" Koji yells.

"I'm not gonna mess with him!" Atsushi fires back. "Besides, he's clearing a path for us, look!"

You're cutting through the demons at a quick pace, rage in your eyes. "I'll make them all pay!" you scream, leaping up and taking out one of the beasts with a stomp through the earth. With the path cleared, you place your sword by your side, embedding it in the earth, and take deep breaths to collect yourself. You look back, over the cliff where Alice fell. "Alice..."

"You okay?" Koji asks. "We have to move on."

A tear falls from your face as you swallow the bitter pill. "I know. Let's go."

You travel through the area, and eventually reunite with the others. When Jun asks where Alice is... you can't bring yourself to say. It's Koji who speaks up and tells them that she's gone.

She's the first in the school to go. You've had injuries already... but Alice is the first death among them all. There are many tears that night... most of the class don't even sleep.

Mizuki doesn't even come to the next day of classes.

"That's unlike her..." Jun mutters. "Unless she was physically unable, there's no way she would skip class. Is she sick?"

Jackie shakes her head. "Nancy, Mariko and I went to get her this morning but... she refused to leave her room. She was Alice's roommate, so I think it hit her harder than most."

"Hey... my condolences," Toshiaki tells you, his usual gruff demeanour fading away. "In the Naito clan... there's two honourable deaths. In battle, and saving another. I hear Alice managed both, so... she'll always have my respect. I know you two were friendly so... there's a pick-me-up, I suppose."

"Thank you..." you mutter.

Jun pats you on the shoulder as the bell ring. "Come on..." he nudges to the door.

"Where?" you ask.

Jun sighs. "Wei, I'm your roommate. I know seeing that was tough on you... I can't even imagine seeing one of our classmates... so I'm going to take you, Koji, Sakura and Atsushi out for a treat. It's... the least I can do."

"Thanks for the offer," you tell him. "But I'm going to pass. I need to find someone."

... She's not in her dorm. She's not in the library.

She doesn't seem to be anywhere.

Was that it for her? Was what happened with Alice the breaking point that sent her running home? It almost was for you. Just thinking of how... your friend, who was smiling a laughing and sleeping through classes just yesterday...

Isn't there anymore.

Eventually, you find her where you least expected. In the patch of grass in the courtyard, lying back and looking up at the clouds.

"What are you doing here?" you ask Mizuki.

She continues to look up. "You told me to try it once. Honestly, I don't see the appeal."

You sit down next to her on the grass. "Are you okay?"

"No..." she mutters, her eyes raw. She likely had been crying since last night. "But you don't have to worry about me. I can... handle myself. You have no obligation or responsibility..."

"As much as no responsibility sounds great to me," you reply. "I just don't see that being the case."

"We don't even get along," Mizuki admits.

>That's not true. Not anymore. Now we... almost get along.
>Alice was your friend. She was my friend too. We're in the same place here.

"I can't have you critiquing my cloud-watching abilities!" Mizuki throws some grass at you. "I have to be good for something!"

She has a slight smile as she looks up again. "I... knew the risks," she muttered. "It just..."

"I know," you reply. "It never really registered that we would actually lose someone... that they'd actually be gone..."

You turn to her. "Look, when you lie back, but your hands behind your head, like a pillow. All carefree..."

Mizuki looks to you, confused, then nods. She does as suggested, and looks back up at the clouds. "This is... better, I suppose..." she remarks.

"Yeah..." you reply as you lie down next to her. "I can stay like this for hours."

Mizuki's eyes begin to well up and her lips curl, as she moves one hand onto the patch of grass between you. You move a hand to the same spot, your fingers interlocking, as she begins crying. Letting it all out, the two of you remain there on the patch of grass, watching the clouds roll by.

And nothing in the world could stop you.

>POV: RYOJI

"And that's how it all started."

"Wow..." you mutter. "So that's how you and Saki's grandma got together... a month in, that beats me and Saki. Just saying, you move a little fast."

"Our friendship," Wei corrects you with a stern face. "That was how our friendship began. We wouldn't have realised our romantic feelings for a while yet."

"A while?" you sigh. "Here I was thinking you were about to build up to the crescendo of a first kiss... probably first ever kiss for both of you."

Wei shakes his head. "You would be wrong. Mizuki and I weren't a couple in our first year, merely... argumentative best friends. As a matter of fact, in our first year of school we were seeing other people."

"You were... what?!" you exclaim.

"You sound invested," Wei says, with a spot of smug pride.

"You're making me invested," you reply. "Get to it. What other people?"

Wei exhales from his nose. Is he amused? "Did you honestly expect it to be that simple? Life doesn't come in on a breeze, Ryoji. We had a longer, more complicated road than that. Mizuki was being courted by Kuniaki, that vain boy from our class. I on the other hand..."

>POV SHIFT: WEI
>February, 1952

Your first year of school is coming to an end. It's been a difficult year, no doubt. Since Alice, none of the class have died in action... but there have been plenty of injuries. Sakura broke an arm and was injured for months, Koji almost died from blood loss after being stabbed by some demons, Toshiaki was trampled by elephant-like creatures, but the mountain man somehow survived and was sure to brag about his superior physical tenacity to you, his alleged rival.

But today, the school is having a nightly reprieve, falling on a safe day. And the students have taken that time to hold something of a year-end celebration, before you are permitted to return home for some time by the principals.

You're ready to take your mind off things, as you head to the dorm of your sweetheart of about four months now...

>Kyoko

You knock on the door, and the sounds of Kyoko's roommate Yukari calls out. "Who is it?"

"It's Wei."

"I-I'm not ready yet!" Kyoko calls out. "Give us a moment!"

The door opens a crack as Yukari pokes her head through it. "Nerves, you know how she is."

"All too well," you remark. "Should I give her these flowers now, or...?"

"I don't want to be a messenger, but that's a sweet gift," Yukari smiles. "Wait in the lounge, and I'll have her out in just a moment."

You head to the lounge of the dorm, where you spot a Shohei shifting through a large amount of letters. "What's this about?" you ask Jun and another classmate, the cool-headed Kotaro as you enter.

Jun chuckles. "Since it's the end of our first year, it seems Shohei has received an anonymous confession of love to nobody's surprise."

"Problem is, it seems multiple people have had the same idea at once. No surprise there, the cool handsome, knightly head of class who has saved our collective skin more times than I can count? I wouldn't be surprised if I left a letter in there myself," he jokes.

"There's more letters than people in our class..."

"A good number are village girls," Kotaro explains. "He also does volunteer work around Dakugeto. He's a total catch... compare that to his creepy lizard brother, who must be fuming. I know Kuniaki is jealous, he's been complaining all day."

You grunt. "Your buddy Kuniaki has a girlfriend, what's he got to be jealous for?"

"Tone it down buddy," Kotaro responds with a smile. "You're starting to sound jealous yourself."

"So..." Jun notes. "What's your plan for break?"

"Me?"

"Yeah, you..." he smiles. "I know I'm going to take care of the household while my mother cares for my sickly grandmother, Kotaro here is taking a trip to Rubi, and Toshiaki is returning to the mountains."

"Don't forget Jackie inviting everyone to Nancy's family villa."

"I don't think Nancy knows about that..." Jun mutters. "But what about you, Wei?"

"Huh... never thought you'd be the type to stay behind and do work," Jun remarks. "Aren't you trying to avoid as much work as possible?"

"Usually," you reply. "But it was either that or go home, so..."

Kotaro chuckles. "Sure. Hey Shohei! How's the letters coming along?"

"I don't understand it," Shohei remarks in an annoyed tone. "So many of them use the same language. Do I really trigger such a response in people?"

"Most definitely," Kotaro replies. "Oh, here comes Kuniaki."

Like the puffed up peacock that he is, Kuniaki strides into the room, with Mizuki close behind him. You meet eyes with Mizuki and you both smile. You've made many friends among your class over the last year, and while Jun is like a brother to you, Toshiaki and you are constantly roughousing, Satoshi and you eat extra lunch together, and Kotaro is always quick with a joke, it's Mizuki you feel is your closest friend.

Not that anyone can tell looking from the outside, the two of you are constantly bickering.

"Ah, end of the year..." Kuniaki sighs to himself. "Soak it in, everyone. Only a few more days and you won't be able to see this gorgeous face around for a while."

"Perish the thought!" Kotaro replies sarcastically, which gets a laugh from Kuniaki himself. "I'm guessing you got your girl a parting gift for the next few weeks?"

"What greater gift than the gift of my presence?" Kuniaki laughs.

"Maybe one you could take home?" you suggest. Kuniaki glares at you while Mizuki gives a polite laugh. He's not particularly a fan of yours.

Mizuki waves off the rest of you. "Come on, the thought of a gift crossing Kuniaki's mind is unheard of! Besides, I wouldn't want one! Some kind of overly produced bauble? It would only distract from work! I don't need a singing gift card or a box of chocolates to tear through."

"Well then I guess I shouldn't bother with the gift I got you..." you joke.

"Wait, what is it?" Mizuki wonders excitedly. "Is it expensive? Shiny? I'm going to outstretch my arms, stop me when I reach the right size!"

You all have a laugh together, and Toshiaki is quick to follow in. He tells you all about his upcoming trip to the mountains, and how in the Naito clan it's a longstanding ritual to head out into the forest to dominate and mate with the largest animal there.

Clearly a bawdy lie to shock people, and that it did. Poor nervous Kyoko entered at just the wrong time, and the girl is red in the face by the time she walks up to your side. "Was... was he just t-talking about-"

"Yes," you reply. "I'll explain later, sweetie... actually, just forget it ever happened. Probably easier that way."

"What is the matter with you?!" the ever sensible Yukari slaps Toshiaki across the back of the head for his story.

"What? I'm explaining my family traditions!" he laughs.

And as you sit there, surrounded by friends, you wonder how such a terrible situation got this good.

>POV SHIFT: RYOJI

"I don't get it..." you mutter. "That seems like... a good life. Why have you never shared these stories."

"Because it WAS a good life," Wei scowls. "The past... those days would come to an end... even sooner than I thought."

"... How soon?" you ask.

Wei looks out on the water. "It was as if the Darkworld knew it was our last day... when we met the demon we would call Beelzebub."

With the tone Wei uses that name... you think you'll need to sit tight for this next part.

"You ready?" Jun asks as he approaches you in the auditorium. "Last incursion of our first year."

You nod. "Well, I'll be sticking around over break, but... it will be odd seeing a new batch of students running around."

"Good thing too," Satoshi replies, cracking his knuckles. "We could use the back-up. Make this a real gang."

"I've never needed back-up!" Toshiaki brags. "We in the Naito clan-"

Koji sighs. "Give it a rest. I've saved your skin enough to know you need back-up sometimes."

"Why am I even more nervous than before..." Kyoko mutters.

Yukari scoffs. "Because these guys are trying to build this up as something special. It's just another in the routine before a break."

Routine... how on earth did something like this become routine?

>THE DARKWORLD

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2_WpfUucfc

"Hey, what's that thing off in the distance?"

The area during the incursion was almost completely empty, just a long patch of dry red sand. Kenta and Momota went to search for an area guardian, trusting the class to stay put. But the keen-eyed Yukari spots something off in the distance.

When you turn your head, you see what looks like some kind of armoured knight... but all in black, with horns and gooey tendrils emanating from its body.

"Looks like we found our guardian," Jackie remarks. "Oh, and our dear teachers aren't even around. Whatever do we do?"

Mitsuharu looks ahead, with a small grin. "Interesting..."

He receives a punch in the arm from Shohei, who addresses everyone as head of class. "I don't like the look of it... it seems like it's more than just a mindless creature."

"What are you talking about?" Mizuki mutters. "Demons are mindless, right? We're not just going to change our minds on that, are we?"

Kuniaki flicks his hair back. "Now, this looks like a challenge..."

"Don't make any sudden movements!" Shohei remarks. "We cannot allow ourselves to rush into battle unprepared."

"Okay, move quickly, don't make any errors," Shohei warns the both of you.

"Errors?" Satoshi remarks. "I don't make mistakes, pal! I'm the legendary delinquent! Let's go, bud!"

You ready your sword as TenKozy readies his rod. You both run in the direction of the demon, splitting off in order to flank it. You come in from the side, and the demon doesn't even turn its head to you as you cleave it in half by the waist. Black good shoots out as the torso comes detached from the legs, flying up before Satoshi smashes it down with a splat with his rod. The beasts body explodes into black goo, just as all the others have, as Satoshi smirks.

"We got it," he chuckles. "That was really no problem at all. Nothing can stop the legendary-"

"SATOSHI, BEHIND YOU!" you yell as you see the goo forming behind him to make shape of the demon again. You knew it couldn't have been that easy.

"Behind...?" Satoshi spins around... but he can't react in time. The creature's fist connects with Satoshi's chest... and you see the fist on the other side.

It punched clean through Satoshi's body, leaving a hole where his torso was.

"TENKOZY!" you scream, as Satoshi coughs up blood.

"I-Impossible..." he mutters. "I'm... the ultimate..."

The light in Satoshi's eyes fade out as he is thrown aside by the demon.

"He..." Mizuki mutters.

"No..." Koji grunts. "NO!"

Kyoko gasps and cries, as the others step forward. "Satoshi..." Jun mutters, looking at his sword. "We will find justice for that!"

Atsushi comes at the demon with fury, but you're quick to tackle him out of the way. Just as you do, you notice a spike launching from the arm of the demon, one that surely would have skewered Atsushi had he continued. "We have to move fast, but not recklessly!" you explain. "It's more resistant to damage, look what happened to Satoshi..."

You wince at the thought of it. Satoshi, he's...

You have to focus, or more of your class will join him. Atsushi dashes around the creature, taking potshots where he can. He's the fastest in the class, and it able to avoid the attacks of the creature... but that's because this demon is taking its time. You don't understand, and it has no face to gauge expression... but you get the strange feeling that it might be toying with you and your classmates.

"Nothing works!" Atsushi exclaims. "It just absorbs every hit! Those tendrils just absorb everything and make the wounds grow back!"

"Is this it...?" Jun asks with concern. "The king of hell... Beelzebub?"

"Don't call it that!" Mariko exclaims. "It... it's just a stronger demon than we've faced! Don't build it up like... like we're..."

Mariko breaks down, as Shohei sees the situation for how dire it is.

Mitsuharu meanwhile throws his head back in a sadistic laugh. "HOW AMAZINGLY INTERESTING!"

"He's lost his mind..." Nancy remarks with shame.

You fall back in time for the rest of the group to ready themselves.

"It's going to take all of us, giving our absolute best to take that out..." Shohei explains. "Now... on the count of three. One... two..."

The creature disappears.

"W-what...?!" Koji exclaims. "Where did it..."

It just... sunk into the ground, and is now out of your line of sight.

"Everyone be on their guard!" Shohei yells. "It could be anywhere-"

The demon appears once more, in the middle of the group. In a split second, before anyone can act, it spreads it's tendrils out and shrouds the class in darkness.

"I... I can't make out what's in front of me..." you mutter, your eyes trying to adjust.

It's an assault on your vision, like being placed in a thick fog, but you can eventually begin to make out your classmates, swinging wildly in the darkness. Atsushi especially, still trying to avenge the loss of his fellow delinquent... when one tendril pierces him from behind, right through the heart.

Atsushi goes limp.

"ATSUSHI!" you yell out, before you see Shohei running through the fog in your direction. He tackles you... and you both fall out into the red sand, your vision fully restored.

"I knew it..." Shohei mutters. "Everyone! Move behind you, and you'll be able to see again!"

You were trapped in some sort of dome of darkness, you can see that clear as day now, as the others escape from the area of effect.

"Where's Atsushi?" Sakura asks.

"I saw him go down..." Toshiaki mutters. "This damn thing is gonna pay! It took two friends from us!"

Yukari grabs him by the arm. "No way, you big lug! We have to keep moving back before it gets us! Go, go!"

"But, Atsushi..." Sakura mutters, before Koji forcefully grabs her by the hand. "He wouldn't want us to join him!"

You all begin to run, with the faster members of the class pulling out in front, you included. Mizuki trips, clumsy as ever, and you move back to help her, but Kuniaki rushes up and pushes you back. He gives you a glare, and mutters "Don't step on my moment..." before helping her up. That ass, he's so worried about his ego and looking good even at a time like this? As you press on, you begin to think you're gaining some distance from the demon.

Until the tendrils begin to fly out towards you all. "DODGE!" Shohei announces, and that's what the others do.

Except Yukari, who gets caught in the leg by a tendril and begins to be dragged back.

"YUKARI!" Kyoko screams, and the normally shy girl springs into action for her best friend, leaping and grabbing Yukari by the arm, entering into a tug-of-war with the creature.

"Kyoko, no..." Yukari mutters. "It got me... save yourself..."

"I-I can't!" Kyoko yells. "I can't let you die!"

"AND I CAN'T LET YOU GO WITH ME!" Yukari screams, tears in her eyes. "You're being dragged back... now just... let go!"

Yukari bites Kyoko's hand to force the release, as she is pulled back by the demon and out of your line of sight.

You never saw her again.

"No..." Kyoko mutters, her voice cracked and broken... before picking up her sword. "NO!"

She runs into the fray, as you look back to your meek girlfriend rushing an unstoppable demon. "Kyoko...? Kyoko!"

You run after her, and Mizuki breaks free from an angry Kuniaki to chase after you with concern. "Wei, don't go back there!"

You dash across the sands, as Kyoko leaps through the air, giving a massive angry swing towards the demon. A tendril shoots up... and easily smashes Kyoko's sword in half. Her eyes widen, seeing her death ahead of her.

"Tell my father, I'm sorry..." Kyoko says as her last words... or what would have been her last had you not leaped up and pulled her out of the way.

You land on the sand on your side, clutching Kyoko tightly, as Mizuki and Shohei rush to your side.

"That was... a distraction..." Mizuki remarks. "But... are the four of us doomed now?"

Shohei sighs. "The others have their chance for escape, I would gladly-"

"I won't!" Mizuki yells at him. "Let's join the others alive, shall we? I... I think I have a strategy!"

"YOU?" you remark. "You have a strategy?"

Mizuki shakes her head. "I know, it's probably not very good! But... those tendrils are coming out of it's back, all of our attacks have been from the front. What if a good stab where those things are coming from is a good... I dunno, weak point? It has to have something, right?"

"But..." Mizuki mutters.

"Go! Now!" you exclaim.

Mizuki pouts. "Don't die on me!" she yells, as she grabs Kyoko and gets ready to go. "And don't disappear either! If you do, I'll never forgive you!"

She runs off with Kyoko, as you look to Shohei.

You charge with your greatsword at the demon, and Shohei does the same. It deflects your attacks and launches forward with it's tendrils. In a rage, you're able to deflect several of them, but more come through, piercing your shoulders.

"GAH!" you exclaim. No, you can't die like this. You have to push forward, you have to do it for TenKozy, for Atsushi, for Yukari...

And you can't let Mizuki down...

"You stupid demon..." you mutter. "We're just the distraction..."

While you and Shohei fend off the tendrils as best you can, almost having your vital organs pierced in the process... Toshiaki jumps into fray, the mountain man plunging his sword deep into the back of the demon. A bright light shines from the creature, and it begins to evaporate as it should. Good thing too, that last tendril was awfully close to piercing a lung.

"Stupid son of a bitch..." Toshiaki mutters, and you notice his eyes are welling in a rare display of emotion. "Why'd you take Yukari from me?"

As the creature is planted into the ground, the red sand beneath you begins to crumble... but you aren't returning to the school. No, the three of you are just falling under the ground.

When you come to, you're in some kind of cave system... a bright, shiny one, filled with translucent rocks and crystals. It doesn't look natural... but it doesn't look like it belongs in the Darkworld either. It's more like a surreal dream than a nightmare.

"The hell are these?" Toshiaki asks.

"These stones..." Shohei mutters, his eyes dazzling as he approaches a red stone. "They're so... strange. Do you hear them whisper?"

The stones? Whispering? Well, now that you listen out for it...

Toshiaki shakes his head. "I don't like this," he remarks. "It feels like they're... talking to me. Want to speak to me... let's move, there's some bad magic going on here."

"Wait..." Shohei mutters as he takes the red stone among the bunch. "This should be researched, surely?"

"If you want to bring it back, don't blame me if it ends the world..." Toshiaki mutters.

"And so..." Wei sighs. "We returned to the others. We held a sigil for the three friends we had lost... and that was the end of my first year."

"And in the second?" you ask.

Wei pauses. "It was mainly routine. We spent much of our time coaching the new batch of students. Kyoko... she had changed from the experience with Beelzebub. She was hardened, cold. Her nervous veneer was gone and she was now a stoic fighter. An entirely different person... we grew distant. We eventually agreed to break off our romantic engagement, but remained friends... distant friends."

"And is that when you and Mizuki finally-"

"Not quite," Wei explains. "She was still embroiled with Kuniaki. That is, until..."

>POV SHIFT: WEI

"You... you scum!"

The yelling from the halls is clear as day to all, and a crowd begins to form around Kuniaki's door. Whatever it is, Mizuki is pissed.

"Oh please, don't get so mad!" Kuniaki explains. "You didn't really expect one to be enough? I'm the kind of man who needs to share himself!"

"You gum on the end of my shoe! You bottom-feeding pond scum! You goat-licker! You jackass of spades!"

Kotaro sighs in the hallway. "What's he done this time..."

"Jackie, by the sounds of it," Koji grunts. "What a fool."

"He did what?!" you exclaim, as you join the fray. "That bastard..."

Mizuki comes storming out of the hallway, steam coming from her head. "Hey, Mizuki-" you begin to call.

"Leave me alone!" she yells, before returning to her room and slamming the door.

As she does, Kuniaki enters the hallway, flicking back his hair. "Oh well, I suppose you can't please everyone. And I've often tried."

>Punch him.

Without hesitation, you swing around and land a punch on Kuniaki, your fist cracking his jaw as he goes down, flying across the floor of the hallway.

"Whoa, Wei..." Jun mutters.

"You... you..." Kuniaki mutters, his hand up against his now broken jaw. "Kotaro, do something!"

Kotaro shrugs. "You had that one coming, my friend."

After that, you storm up to Mizuki's room, before politely knocking on the door. "Mizuki? It's Wei."

"I don't want to talk to anybody!" she calls out. "I'm angry! You don't want me to be angry with you!"

"You're always angry with me," you point out.

"But you deserve it all those other times!" she replies.

You sigh. "Look... I'll be outside your door when you're ready to talk."

"You're seriously just going to wait there?"

You shrug. "Got nothing better to do."

You sit down by the door of her room, waiting for her to be ready to open up. You don't really know why you're doing this, but you do know that you feel bad for your friend. Your best friend...

Somehow, you find yourself having fallen asleep, as you wake up in the morning in the hallway. Not only that... but you now have a blanket draped over you, and a pinned note by your side.

"Wei, you're a fool for waiting by my door all night. We're barely out of winter, are you trying to freeze to death? But... thank you. I'm sorry I didn't talk. It's embarrassing, but to be honest... I chose to have an angry nap that turned into an angry full night's sleep. Oops. I've made extra lunch to share with you today. It WON'T be a habit, okay?" - Mizuki

You smile, and you head out to classes, eagerly awaiting your lunch with Mizuki.

In the last year, you've had a boost in the class, ranking up to the front row. Mizuki, on the other hand... she's still in the back row of the class. She was crushed when she found out, but vowed to herself she would be the number one in the class come next year. And your current year is winding down...

"What are you so happy about?" Jun asks while you sit in class.

"Jun..." you mutter. "I... think I'm in love."

"Who's the unlucky lady?" Maki jokes. "Oh, if it's my dear Mariko I have to inform you that you can't touch her! She'll be protected by yours truly!"

"Come on, Maki..." Jun smiles. "I think we all know who it is."

The two look back to Mizuki, who is currently making a paper airplane with a message inside it. She tosses it in your direction, but it flies back and pokes her in the eye. They then look back to you, and you nod.

"Yeah..." you laugh. "Her."

You shake your head, pulling out a pack of cigarettes. Wei is quick to snatch them from your hand. "Hey!"

"No smoking," Wei mutters. "You won't get these back until after the trip."

"I just don't get why you're afraid to tell this story," you remark. "It doesn't seem that different from my own past year."

"And can you tell your story?" Wei asks. "When it's all done?"

"I..." you mutter. You remember how you struggled to phrase your feelings on the school to even yourself that morning. "Sure I could."

Wei rolls his eyes. "Certainly... it's dark. I'll keep manning the boat, you head to the cabin and get some rest."

"But your story-"

"My story will still be here tomorrow."

You sigh, and head to the cabin below to sleep. In the middle of the night you find yourself waking up, and briefly checking the upper deck to make sure nothing is wrong. There, you find Wei smoking through your pack of cigarettes, looking out onto the water... and crying.

The next morning Wei drops a bucket of ice filled with fish on your bed to wake you up.

"The hell?"

"Grill these up," Wei orders. "Make yourself useful on this boat, delinquent."

"So... how about the rest of your story?" you ask, as you return updeck.

Wei looks at you. "What story?"

"Don't play dumb."

"The story ended," he remarks. "The story was how I fell in love with Saki's grandmother. It reached its conclusion before you slept, did it not?"

You grunt. "Bullshit, you said yourself there was more..."

Oh, you get it now.

"He changed his mind, didn't he? He doesn't want to tell you the rest..."

"I'm not out here to... get you," Wei explains. "And you don't need to get me. We are far from friends, and we are only family due to my begrudging acknowledgement of your relationship."

"I know, but-"

"Fry the damn fish, and don't ask any more questions."

You and Wei sit in silence, as you make a meal for the both of you. Two plates, you set Wei's on his side of the boat, and you return to yours to continue fishing.

A couple bites, which you set aside.

You yawn.

Wei coughs.

"... Is there any way to play... music, or something?" you ask.

"The fish just returned, you want to chase them off again?"

You shrug. "Could use some light entertainment. I returned my only book yesterday."

Wei sighs. "There's a tape player somewhere in the cabin. It runs on batteries."

"A tape player? What a geezer..."

"Do you want music or not?"

You make your way into the cabin and pull out the tape player. Only one tape you could find, already inserted into it. No label on it... you hope this isn't some romantic mix-tape Wei made in his youth.

You hit play and take a seat on the side of the boat.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9gK2fOq4MY

"Huh... good song," you mutter.

Wei's eyes are closed as he nods his head in time with the music. He simply gives a grunt of agreement.

Another moment passes.

"With Saki and I..." you mutter, not sure why you're speaking. "We had our first kiss on the roof of the school. Her parents were being jackasses and... heh, you'll never believe this. Since she talked back to them, she figured she was now destined to be a delinquent and tried to smoke a cigarette. Didn't go well for her... but she did manage to finish it."

Wei shakes his head. "She gets that determination from Mizuki."

"She gets the stubbornness from you."

Wei finally lets out a chuckle.

A real, genuine chuckle.

"That's true..." he admits. "With me and Mizuki..."

>POV SHIFT: WEI

"Ha! I knew I'd find you here!"

Lying in the grass, looking up at the clouds. How did she guess? To be fair, if she had arrived five minutes earlier, you would still be with Momota, researching the red stone. It's been almost a year, and you still can't get to the bottom of what it is. Momota and Kenta try not to spend to much time with the stone. Once they hear the whispering, they put it away.

She plops herself down, sitting cross-legged beside you.

"What's wrong?" she asks.

"Nothing..." you explain. "I'm just... deep in thought."

"You shouldn't have punched Kuniaki," Mizuki tells you. "Not that he didn't deserve it, but you didn't have to waste your time on him. I wasn't going to stay with him for much longer anyway, I should honestly thank him for moving the date forward where I dumped his ass!"

She laughs to herself, before nudging you until you laugh as well. "There's Wei Kobashi," she smirks. "So... I've been thinking a lot too..."

You sit up. "You have?"

"Yeah."

You pause. Now's the time. You need to get it out there. You need to let her know. "Mizuki, I-"

"I love you."

... Wait, those words came from her, not you.

Mizuki cups her face in her hands. "OH, I SAID IT! I LOVE YOU, WEI! I LOVE YOU!"

She excited and embarrassed all at once, and all you can say is... "What the hell?! I was just about to say that to you!"

Mizuki perks up. "What? Really?!"

"Yeah!" you reply. "You cut in on my love confession!"

"No!" Mizuki protests, wagging her finger. "You were going to cut in on mine, but I beat you to it!"

"Why you... you..." you mutter.

And soon you're both in a fit of laughter. "Mizuki, I..."

>POV SHIFT: RYOJI

"And that was how it happened."

"Wait, where's the kiss?" you ask. "Did you not kiss?"

Wei shrugs. "Of course we kissed. I just didn't feel the need to tell you."

"Why not?"

"It's my story, I can choose to omit the intimate details of my first kiss with my wife from some demanding delinquent if I so choose," he responds. "But yes... we did kiss."

"Huh..." you remark. "So that's the end of the story, huh? You and Mizuki."

Wei shakes his head. "That's the end of how myself and Mizuki became a couple, yes... but that's not the story I was telling. Only a part. This is the story of my time at the academy. And I have a little more to tell..."

"Something's coming, something cloaked..."

Nancy checks the horizon, as Kotaro shakes his head. "I don't like the sound of something coming towards us on one of our last incursions of the year."

"It doesn't look like a demon..." Nancy remarks. "In fact, it looks human."

Shohei's head spins. "Human?"

"Yes..."

You begin to move. "I'm going to proceed with caution, have your weapons at the ready."

As you walk up to the figure, you can tell it's that of a human woman. She even looks young. "Excuse me..." you mutter. "Are you... would you by any chance be... a demon?"

Not the best way to ask it, but you're unsure of how to react to this.

"A demon?" she sounds confused. "Quite the opposite."

She throws back to reveal her full face, her eyes look like they're glowing. "I'm a messenger of the Elder One. You can call me Tenshi. You're the demon who needs to be purged."

"We... we're not demons!" you yell at the lady. "And what's this messenger talk?"

Tenshi tilts her head back in an unnatural stance. "Everything here... is corrupted. Impure. I must send them back to the way they were. In the name of the Elder One, his will be done."

"You must be delirious," you remark. "I don't know how you got here, but we're humans, like you."

Tenshi smirks. "I am no human. I am an angel."

A... what?

"And demons deserve to be purged."

Tenshi raises her hand, and you surely would have died had Jun not pulled you out of the way, as this strange glowing blast emanates from her hand.

"Careful! She's no normal human!" Jun remarks as he readies his sword. "Maybe we can get through to her."

"No," the harsh Kyoka mutters as she readies her own sword. "Whatever that thing is, we need to destroy it."

Wait, there's something odd about that blast that came from her hand. You look to the rock it hit in your stead. Pierced cleanly through, but not only that... the rock itself begins to disintegrate, blowing like dust upwards in the wind, as though it were... ascending to something.

"Please stay still so I may smite you," Tenshi complains, as the rest of the group ready their weapons.

Nancy readies her ax, and Jackie prepares a battle stance. They dash around this supposed angel, moving in opposite directions, in an attempt to disorient her. Tenshi's head spin around on a swivel as she stands still, trying to follow both their movements.

"She's dazed!" Nancy exclaims with authority. "Now, Jackie!"

"Sure thing, Darling!" Jackie fires back, as the two close in on flanking the demon.

Kyoko shakes her head. "No, something's wrong..."

"FALL BACK!" Shohei exclaims, but it's too late.

Tenshi begins to spin, and an outward area of attack blast of that strange glow emanates outwards, capturing Jackie and Nancy in the middle of it. Jun pulls you back, as does everyone to escape being touched by the dome as well.

"What just..." Mizuki mutters. "Hey! Nancy! Jackie! Answer us!"

When the dust settles, Tenshi stands alone.

No Jackie. No Nancy. Both are gone. Like they were never even there to begin with.

"You..." Koji mutters. "You monster! What happened to them? What did you do? Where are they?"

"I sent them to him," Tenshi explains. "They ascended. It's a much better place, trust me. I don't know why any of you are struggling so much."

This Tenshi is... far more terrifying than anything you've ever faced. Far worse than Beelzebub was.

"What are we going to do?" Mariko mutters. "It... it took Nancy and Jackie... all at once..."

Maki places a hand on her shoulder. "Stay strong, Mariko... we can... we can handle this, I'm sure."

As the others begin to move, Kuniaki scoffs. "To hell with that! I won't let you rob all of the glory! Why, I-"

Kotaro is quick to whack his best friend in the back of the head, knocking him out. "About time he shut up," he replies. "Good luck, Wei."

Shohei and Mitsuharu lead the rest of the class to safety, as you ready your blade... with Jun right behind you.

"Get moving!" you yell at him, but he doesn't budge with his own sword prepared.

He shakes his head. "You know I can't allow that, Wei. If they need protecting, it's my duty to protect them... I think you'd finally agree."

"Jun?"

He smiles. "I remember when we first met, you self-professed coward. Now look at you... you've changed. You've grown, you've hardened."

"I had to," you explain. "I'm not proud of it."

"That's okay," Jun laughs. "I'm proud of you. Wei... if one of us doesn't make it out-"

You nod. "Make sure Mizuki is okay."

"And you the same with Maki."

"Maki?" you ponder. "Since when did you-"

Jun laughs. "I can have my secrets. Let's do this."

"Why are you both talking so much?" Tenshin asks. "Are you accepting your purging? I would appreciate it if you did."

Why is she so casual? What's up with this thing?

You and Jun charge at the angel, and you swipe your blade. She drifts back, but Jun is the to fill the opening, stabbing his sword towards her from the side. She manages to dodge that too, but you manage to clear a distance, driving her back so that the others can safely escape.

"Now what?" Jun asks.

You and Jun look to each-other and nod. "Together?"

"Together."

You both charge at the angel, and Tenshi begins to move. She dodges each of your slashes with ease, but the two of your begin to adapt, fixing your footwork and pressing forward. You miss a slash, but Jun is ready to pick up the slack, as his blade cuts along the cheek of Tenshi. No blood drips from the wound, instead the wound opens up and a glowing light spills out from the opening.

So you can do something to it, this is good.

However, sensing the danger, Tenshi picks up her own pace, taking this fight a little more seriously. You swing at her to finish her off, but she leaps back too quickly for you to follow... then you lose track of her outright.

"Where did-"

"BEHIND YOU!" Jun yells. You spin around to see Tenshi coming at you with a blade of her own... only for Jun to leap in front.

The blade pierces through his armour... but Jun doesn't give in.

"Now I have you in place!" he remarks, as he swing his sword. It swings through Tenshi... or rather, where she was, as the angel dissipates outright before taking what surely would have been a fatal cut.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gd3gZUiQPx0

She's gone... but Jun... that bright gold glow is seeping out of his pierced body as he stumbles. "I feel... funny..." he mutters as he collapses and you catch him.

"JUUUUUUUN!" you scream, holding him in your arms. "Don't... come on, stay with me... stay with me, Jun."

"Wei..." Jun mutters, coughing. For some reason, there's a smile on his face. "It's... okay. I don't know why, but... this feels right."

"You're delirious," you remark. "Come on, I can get you to the others and-"

Jun shakes his head, and you look to see his wound spreading throughout his body, the glowing light growing more and more. "I... I think I'll be okay..." he mutters. "This isn't goodbye, Wei... I'll see you later."

"JUN!" you yell, before the rest of his body dissipates. He... he's gone.

When you return to the others, they can tell something is wrong by your face. You're pale, the blood drained from you, and without a friend by your side.

"Where... where's Jun?" Maki asks.

>That thing, it killed him.

Maki is inconsolable after that night.

You aren't either.

That thing... it called itself an angel, but no doubt it was a demon. And it took your friends from you.

You can never forgive those creatures.

Demons are scum.

That was the day you vowed to one day wipe them all out.

You don't know how, but one day, you'll manage it.

>POV SHIFT: RYOJI

"You know..." you mutter. "I made the same vow to myself. After that incident with the Endless Night."

"Well, I suggest you give up on that goal," Wei warns you. "Look at me now, Ryoji. I'm 81. I know that it's an impossible game."

You shrug. "Who knows, geezer... maybe I can do what you couldn't."

Wei doesn't appreciate that one so much, as he glares at you with anger in his eyes. "Do you get some kind of enjoyment? Some kind of thrill from challenging me at every turn?"

"No, I-"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehJnZnX7mQY

"Listen to me," Wei tells you. "You are not special. I wasn't special. You enter that school, being told you have those abilities, and everyone thinks of themselves as the all conquering hero of a tale they'll write songs about. There are no songs written for Wei Kobashi, and there never will be. We're all here to serve our role, and carry on the important cycle. For the sake of survival."

You stand up. "You think that's our purpose? To just carry on a cycle. You sound so pathetic."

You kick aside the record player. "Don't touch that-" Wei begins.

"My friend is dead!" you snap. "He wasn't just a... a fucking cog! He was a man! With thoughts and fears, hopes and dreams! And he's dead! Nina is dead! Countless are dead in the name of that school, and you think it's just part of the routine? What if Saki died, huh? Would you still say she's just carrying on the cycle, serving her role?"

"Don't go there-"

"You're gonna talk about all the friends you lost, but how much do you care? So many come and gone through that school and you treat them like pawns! Do you even remember the names of half the students who got killed in that-"

Wei props up... and places his hand around your throat. He pins you against the cabin door. "Shut up."

He hangs his head low as he lets out a sniff and begins to cough. "Just... shut up, Ryoji."

He lets go of you, and you notice him wiping a tear from his eye as he returns to his side of the boat. He grabs his fishing hook, and tosses it into the river, where it's carried up stream. He sits on the edge, placing his feet into the river and feeling the cool water rush by.

"Ryoji..."

You rub your throat. You never expected him to lash out like that. He didn't hurt you, and you know he could have, but...

>So... does your story have an ending?

"Of course..." Wei mutters.

A silence breaks out, before Wei lets out a sigh. "I suppose I should tell you the one last story from my time in the school."

>POV SHIFT: WEI
>1954

"So, what can you tell me about it?"

Principal Momota called you to his office with regards to the stone.

It's your final month before graduation, though you have no intention of leaving the school anytime soon. You'll be sticking around to guide the other students. And since the day you found it over a year ago, Momota and Kenta have been researching the stone. Or rather... Momota has kept up the research, after an incident where Kenta attempted to take the stone himself. The calls and the whispering that emanated from it seemed to have spoken to him, and he removed himself from the investigation as a form of discipline.

"It's strange," Momota remarks. "From everything we've examined, those stones... they don't appear to be demonic in origin."

"What are you talking about?" you ask. "How can they not be demonic? We found them in the Darkworld."

"Yes, but over the years, you have noticed one consistent aspect of all things from that world, correct?" he asks.

You nod, as Momota continues.

"At their core, everything in the Darkworld is made of that strange black viscous substance. It's what they become when destroyed, it's what they are made of inside and out. But these... they're different. They're shining, crystallised... nothing of the sort that we've seen before. However... there's a flaw in its shine. A corruption. I believe it came from an outside source, only to be tainted by the Darkworld."

"And where are you suggesting the source of the stones are?" you ask.

"The lightworld?" Momota suggests, semi-jokingly. "Who knows? There is so much we don't. First word of the Darkworld we gained from old city folklore before that gate reopened. Perhaps there are other worlds we don't know of."

>I don't believe that. Frankly, I don't want to believe that.

"Of course, of course..." Momota waves his hand. "It's purely a guess. I doubt such a thing is true... but there are certainly aspects of that world we have no knowledge of. Come, I'll show you the stone. The corruption within it is becoming more prevalent."

Momota leads you to the research room of the academy, opening a drawer by the desk and pulling out the box with the stone contained. He places it on the desk, and you approach. You pull the lid off the small box and...

"Momota-sensei?" you remark. "It's... gone."

Momota's eyes widen. "What?"

"It's gone!"

Momota spins the box around and checks inside. "But... who could have..." he mutters, before looking ahead. "Kenta."

"Kenta?"

"My brother took it," he mutters. "No doubt."

Momota throws the box aside and begins marching towards Kenta's disciplinary office. This is bad... you quickly follow the principal. That stone, missing... someone had to have taken it. And nobody knows the power that artefact can hold.

Kenta is sitting in his chair and stands up once Momota enters. "Brother! What are you-"

Momota grabs Kenta and holds him up. "Where is it? You took it, didn't you?"

"Let go of me!" Momota commands. "What on earth do you think you-"

"Where is the stone?" he asks. "I know you-"

"Calm down!" you yell at both principals. "Let's think about this rationally..."

A knock on the door, though it's already open.

"Am... I interrupting something?" Shohei asks hesitantly.

Momota places his brother down, calming himself. "I'm sorry, Shohei... what are you in need of?"

"I was just wondering..." Shohei mutters. "It appears my brother has gone missing."

Mitsuharu... missing? Shohei's half-brother had been acting unusual lately. Even moreso than usual...

"I'll try to find out," Shohei mutters. "He's been acting strangely. Come help me... I'm worried about him."

"The stone is missing, and so is Mitsuharu..." Momota mutters.

Kenta's eyes widen. "THE STONE IS MISSING?!" he yells in his usual tone. "THAT DAMN STUDENT FREAK MUST HAVE TAKEN IT! HE'LL BE HEAVILY REPRIMANDED FOR THIS!"

Shohei shakes his head. "My brother wouldn't steal from the school... look, Wei and I will find him, don't worry."

After much asking around, you hear from an underclassmen that he headed in the direction of the town. Asking around the town if they had seen a strange creepy looking purple-haired man, you find little answers, until one young woman answers your question.

"I... think I saw a man like that," she responds. "He was heading towards the hillside by the lake. You know in that thick forest clearing? I saw him head that way."

Dakugeto is surrounded by thick forests. It seems he was heading where nobody else could see him, deep in the middle of the forest land. What is he planning?

"Thank you, uhh..." you mutter.

"Charlotte," she replies. "Charlotte Maddox."

You pause, standing still. That name... you look to the girl and begin to see the similarities... it's been almost three years since you lost your first friend... but now you look to her sister. Does she know? Will she ever know? You felt the pain of that loss... but does Charlotte get even that? Is she allowed any closure at all?

Shohei grabs you and drags you towards the forest. "We can't spare any time," he tells you.

The two principals are trailing behind you, and you signal for you to split up into groups of two. You and Shohei stick together as you trawl through the forest brush.

"I don't know what Mitsuharu is doing," he mutters. "But... he couldn't have taken it. He has a stronger will than that."

"Does he?" you ask.

"He does..." Shohei sighs. "He... wait, that's him."

He points him out. Mitsuharu, standing there in the middle of the forest clearing, standing in thought. "He looks dangerous," you remark as you draw out your sword. Shohei is quick to stop you.

"No." He glares at you. "He's my brother. I'll speak with him."

Shohei steps forward, and his brother acknowledges him. Words are exchanged, just out of your field of hearing... but you quickly come rushing forward when it happens.

A stab, in the middle of a clinch between the brothers.

Mitsuharu's sword rammed straight through his brother, as Shohei goes limp.

As you approach, you see two things fall from Shohei's grasp.

A hidden knife, that he had at the ready... what? Was he prepared to sneak attack his own brother? Why?

The other is more damning.

From Shohei's pocket... falls the stone.

"Shohei..." you mutter, as the first brother falls limp before Mitsuharu. "He took it?"

"I knew when I heard the whispering at night," Mitsuharu explains, as he picks his brother up. "I knew my brother had fallen, and needed to be dealt with."

"Dealt with-"

"No other should have granted him the mercy killing but me," Mitsuharu explains. "He had fallen to that thing."

He then turns, carrying his brother... leaving the stone behind.

"You aren't going to take it?"

Mitsuharu laughs maniacally as he always does. "It's not... interesting to me. Do with it what you will. I'm taking my brother and I'm leaving."

You never saw Mitsuharu again. You don't know if Shohei was nursed back to health or if he died there... those two brothers, their lives forever a mystery.

And as you pick up the stone, another brother comes running through the clearing.

"AH, KOBASHI!" Kenta exclaims. "I SEE YOU HAVE PROCURED THE STONE! I SUGGEST YOU HAND IT TO ME, IT'S POWER IS TOO GREAT FOR A MERE STUDENT, EVEN THE TOP OF YOUR CLASS SUCH AS YOURSELF!"

"No!" Momota presses through on the other end of the brush. "Kenta has been tempted by the stone before. Pass it this way, and I can return it to it's case."

You know you can't trust yourself with the stone either, but two voices calling to you at once. Kenta is disciplined, but Momota understands the stone better. Just... who of the two do you trust more?

>Kenta.

You toss the stone over to Kenta. Either could have worked, you have no reason to distrust the brothers. They're both strong-willed. The strongest people you've ever met.

Kenta catches the stone and stares at it. "Thank you..." he mutters in a more solemn tone than usual tone. "Thank you..."

He stares at the stone... then crushes it in his hand.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htDB8SuLrng

Suddenly a massive wave of energy surrounds and flows up through Kenta.

"W-what did he do?!" Momota yells. "Brother! Why did you-"

The wave becomes more fierce, pushing you and Momota back. "So close to the village..." you remark. "What is he..."

As the dust settles, Kenta stands tall... but looks like a beast. A metal mask with glowing eyes covers his face, steam expelling from it, as Kenta lets out a distorted roar that isn't human. It sounds like several wild animals howling at once, filtered through a radio.

"What in the hell is that thing?!" you yell.

"Kenta..." Momota mutters... before readying his sword. "We have to stop him! And we have to keep him from rampaging out into the village."

"I... I doubt that's possible," you mutter.

Momota scoffs. "Possible, impossible. Kobashi, you have been here for three years. Do you believe I expected my brother to turn his back on his humanity? Did you expect the power of that stone? No, we both would have thought it impossible. To all hells with the impossible!"

It's true, the idea of the impossible means nothing to you now... and now you must take action. "Vice-Principal Kenta..." you sigh. "I promised I would destroy them all... if that includes you, then I have no choice."

Kenta roars and charges at you, but Momota leaps forth and the two clash blades. Momota plants his feet in the earth, being pushed back by the force of Kenta's attack, and looks to you. "Run back to the academy, make sure the village is safe!" he explains. "You'll get hurt if you stay here! I'll deal with my brother!"

You shake your head gripping your sword. "You said 'we' before. I know that not even you can stop him alone."

He's looking out for your safety, but if Principal Momota falls here, you will have no hope. The village will be ravaged, the school destroyed, humanity... doomed. Kenta gave into the demons, and you vowed to take them all out.

You swoop behind Kenta and swing your blade, but your sword simply clangs off his new-found armour. Beast Kenta is tougher than ever before, and he was already the toughest person you knew.

"Do you have a plan of attack?" you ask Momota, looking for guidance as you step back from Kenta's swing. He charges at you with his hand raised out. You dodge, and Kenta's resulting grab with his clawed hand is enough to fell a tree.

Momota grunts. "I... I have no idea. I wasn't prepared for something like this."

Kenta roars again, before... looking around. His eyes survey the forest, as you realise you and Momota are perfectly still. You kick a rock through the air, and Kenta chases it, slashing it in half with pinpoint precision.

Of course... that mask, those eyes. His method of vision has completely changed, and he hasn't adjusted yet.

"Well... I might have a plan of my own," you explain.

"And what's that?" Momota asks.

"It seems his vision is based on movement," you explain. "Ergo..."

You dash around the area, and instantly Kenta picks up on your movements and begins the hunt. Just as you expected. First order of business is to pull him deeper into the forest, so as to prevent an incident within the village. Any kind of destruction needs to be kept to a minimum.

He moves like a bird of prey, running by your side and trying to swipe in. You dodge a blow from his sword and a tree is felled, getting in the path of Momota. Dammit... he keeps coming at you, and you deflect an attack before moving again. This Kenta... his welcomed you into the school. For three years, he was an authority. He was a mentor, a teacher... when you refused to return to your own father, the brothers took you in. You were like a third brother to them... they trusted you, and you trusted them.

But darkness lurks in the hearts of all. Even those you love.

You can't let up, you have to give it your all.

"KENTAAAAAAAAAAA!" you yell, summoning all of your strength, as Kenta lets out a beastial roar.

You both stab at the same time. He catches you in the gut, as you feel the length of his sword enter you. But you know... you broke through his armour as well. "If I can take you down with me..." you mutter.

Kenta growls, he still has his energy. You know it's not enough.

But Momota's attack could be.

"BROTHER!" He cries out before slashing through the armour of Kenta from behind. His sword is pulled from you as Kenta swings around a second time, before taking another decisive slash from his brother. "Goodbye..."

With the last slash through the abdomen, Kenta stumbles, then falls. Steam rises in greater measure from his suit and helm, as you begin to stagger back. Momota notices your wound and rushes to your side, keeping you upright. "Kobashi!"

He holds you in place as he examines the wound. "Can you... can you walk?"

"I... don't know..." you gasp for air, blood draining from your body.

"I'll carry you back," he says. "You'll be treated at the academy. Come with-"

"LOOK OUT!"

Kenta rises from his position and locks his sight on Momota.

A blast comes from his hand, as you've seen from demons before, which catches Momota in the side. The younger Misawa flies, crashing through the trunk of a tree, likely breaking several bones in the process.

As Kenta stands and raises his sword to you, you clutch your gut. It's just him and you now, and he looks to be unstoppable. Can you win? Probably not. By all accounts, you should run away. A simple coward, who just wanted a peaceful life, to look up at the clouds as they rolled by.

You raise your sword instead. "You... you really whipped me into shape, Kenta."

You charge, using your free hand to hold in your side, as you swing your greatsword with a single hand, giving all of your strength. You grunt and strain yourself with each swing, and try to keep pace up with the beast that Kenta has become. It's fruitless, but you fight. It's what Jun would have done. That much you know.

Eventually, Kenta knocks your sword from your hand, as it plants itself in the dirt, but you don't give up. You kick him back and reach for the blade, grab the hilt and spin around into a clash of blades with your old teacher.

But it's only delaying the inevitable. "Momota is down..." you mutter. "I can't beat you alone..."

"And you aren't alone."

Mizuki's voice. Are you hallucinating? The blood loss is becoming immense.

No... as Kenta raises his blade to finish you off, his hand is wrapped in a chain. Koji's chain.

And there she comes, the bright star in your life, launching herself and slashing clean down the back of the beast.

"Wei, you're hurt!" Mizuki exclaims.

"Wait, is that thing Kenta?!" Koji exclaims, keeping it at bay.

You're confused. "How... how did you-"

"We saw you leaving in a hurry," Mizuki explains. "We all couldn't just let you be. We had to see what the problem was."

"... We all?"

Toshiaki leaps from a tree and crashes down on Kenta with a pounce. He's thrown off, but lands on his feet. "How could I forget my rival?"

And soon, they all come into view.

Sakura appearing from a shrouded concealment. "We care for our own. That's a strict principle of honour."

Mariko nods. "If our dear friends are in danger, we just couldn't let them be hurt, could we?"

"I have always sword to protect!" Maki exclaims, as she readies her sword. "Not just Mariko, but all of my friends!"

Kyoko steps forward with a stern face. "Staying behind were the actions of a past me. I choose to live life taking a step forward!"

Kotaro laughs. "Is it time for all the speeches? Maybe Kuniaki can explain why he jumped at the chance to follow!"

"I-I just wanted to glory of the rescue," Kuniaki explains. "I... respect Kobashi-san, that's all."

Koji chuckles. "We're all here. Now, what to do with our teacher... former teacher, I'm guessing."

"Everyone ready?" you ask.

Toshiaki smirks. "I don't know, are you done bleedng?"

"Yeah..." you mutter, standing upright once more and powering through the pain. "I'm done bleeding."

You ready your sword, just as Kenta breaks free from Koji's chain. You slash across the side of Kenta, but he manages to deflect your second shot. You power through, breaking through his defences and leaving an opening. Mizuki swoops in and plunges her thin blade into his chest with a lunge that pushes him back towards a tree.

"I still can't believe you followed me," you remark.

As she leaps back and lands by your side, she sticks out her tongue with a tease. "I might not be very bright... but I sure know you, jellybean."

Toshiaki comes in from behind on Kenta and restrains him, before Maki and Kotaro use their magic to restrain him. Toshiaki leaps back and Sakura jumps in for a high attack from above using her speed. She catches him with the first, but is sent flying back from his deflection of the second, before being caught in Koji's arms. "I've got you," he tells her.

Kuniaki swoops in on the new opening and hits another weak point in Kenta's defences. He lets out a roar, before raising his sword, only to get caught by Koji's chain once more. "Now, Wei! NOW!"

You push through it all, running forward and ramming your greatsword through the biggest opening in his defences yet, ramming your blade right through his heart.

Kenta lets out one last roar, a blast of steam rising from his body... before finally stopping.

Kenta is gone.

You begin to laugh.

"Heh... I can't believe... we did it..." you mutter. Before collapsing.

"Wei? WEI!"

You were hospitalised for over a week after that... but you made it to graduation on your own power.

Your time as a student in Dakugeto has come to an end.

>Months later

"What did you think?" Mizuki asks as you step out of the movie theatre.

"It was... okay," you shrug.

"Okay?" she asks. "It was excellent! I'm telling you now, that Gojira's going down as a classic! It's gonna beat King Kong!"

You shake your head. "Sure, sure... but come on, a giant monster terrorising humanity? It's just a little far-fetched, don't you think?"

Mizuki places her hands on her hips and gives you a glance, before you both break into laughter. "I think we would know about that."

She playfully pokes you in the ribs and you let out a chuckle. "So, what's our plan for today?"

You smirk. "Something I haven't done in a while... you know, lie back in the grass, look at the clouds. Care to join me?"

Mizuki smiles. "Nothing would give me a greater honour."

With that, you walk off into the sunset with the love of your life. It's not the end. You both have many more stories, many more adventures still to come. But no matter what else happens from this point on, you're happy to know...

That idiot and this coward made it.

>So wait, was Kenta already possessed or did the stone turn him into an Archdemon?

Wei shakes his head. "Let me tell you something, Shida... I'm still so far in the dark even at my age. But I don't believe either of those possibilities is the truth. Not possessed, not a demon... but rather a corrupted human."

You sit down by the side of the boat, Wei still dipping his feet in the water. You don't quite know what to say, after hearing all of that from the old geezer. He just unloaded three years of his history on you... but why? He doesn't even like you. Why would he trust you with this story. Did he just need a wall to speak to, to clear his own mind.

Wei lightly splashes the water. "Momota lead the school in the stead of his brother. He was principal for two decades before eventually falling in the Darkworld. Of course, I took over from there. Of course, you know his descendants... his great grandson Yamato."

"I think so," you nod.

"Jun had a younger brother," Wei continues. "And his family line continued with the school. His great nephew is a teacher, Takeshi. Despite appearances, that boy was an excellent student, and an excellent teacher for morale."

"And the rest?" you ask. "Noticed a lot of surnames in that story. Especially-"

"Naito?" Wei asks. "I'm sure Toshiaki reminded you of your teacher and your friend. He... died young. Not in battle, not saving another... but through a heart condition. A degenerative disease inherent in the Naito bloodline. It isn't how he wanted to go."

"Koji and Sakura eventually married. They taught in the school, and fought many battles together. They were fiercely competitive with one another. Their granddaughter, Kiriko, is a freshmen in the academy. Koji was the first to go, his body broke down from repeated internal injuries. Sakura died a natural death about 17 years ago."

"Mariko and Maki chose not to remain with the school. They would return every now and then to coach the new students, but the pair ultimately spent their days running a small corner store in the village. Mariko died after a long bout of illness, and Maki followed her just hours after."

"Kuniaki and Kotaro never split from each-other. They remained as teachers of the school. Rumours abound that the two went from friends to lovers, rumours I believed. Kuniaki died in the darkworld, and Kotaro was never the same after. He served as my vice principal until... well, until four years ago. He was the last of the original class to go."

"Other than yourself?"

Wei looks at you. "I... went a long time ago." He pauses. "Mizuki... well... I'm sorry."

>You've told me so much already. Better to get the last out there.

"Mizuki and I..." he mutters. "We married shortly after she graduated from college. Yes... she made it through college. Her hard work paid off."

He lets out a sigh. "We moved together, she taught in the school... and we spent every single day together. We were happy. And then... we were going to have a child together. She... didn't survive the birth. She was 32. 32... gods, it was 48 years ago."

"You had to raise that son alone..."

Wei shakes his head. "Little bastard wasn't worth it. I'd... trade anything for another day with her."

After a brief silence, Wei pulls his feet from the water. As he dries himself off, he looks to you. "I... see their faces all the time. When I see Akihito, or your friend Akio, I see Toshiaki. When I see Takeshi, I see Jun... and it's not just them. Everyone. Every person to ever come from that school. So many have died... all to protect the future of humanity, all heroes... but that doesn't make it any better. When I close my eyes, I see their faces, all of them. Every name, their voices, the way they talked, the way they walked... I haven't had a proper sleep in years."

Wei stands. "I know you think I'm some sort of heartless monster. Perhaps I am. But the truth is... I still feel pain."

You look up to Wei. He doesn't seem so tall to you anymore. That giant of a man... just looks like he is. A sad old man who misses the people he loves.

You shake your head before climbing up on top of the cabin. You lie back and look up.

"Ryoji, what are you doing?"

"Watching the clouds," you reply. "Care to join me?"

Wei scoffs. "I haven't done that since before..."

"Your loss," you reply. "This is pretty great, I gotta tell ya."

Wei shakes his head, before rolling up his sleeves... and joining you atop the cabin. The big man sits on the ledge, before laying back and looking up. Slowly, but surely, a smile grows on his face. "That one looks like a giraffe."

"Eh, I don't see it," you reply. "But that one's definitely an octopus."

"No, it's clearly a squid," Wei remarks.

You chuckle. "So... whatever happened to Mitsuharu?"

"No idea," Wei replies. "But when I looked into that order you dealt with during the Endless Night... the name Mitsuharu came up in their records often. Possibly their founder. Mitsuharu was from the village and always had an obsession with that world... perhaps he started it."

"Huh..." you mutters, placing your hands behind your head. "You ever start to think everything is connected?"

"Fate?" Wei asks. "No... I don't believe in fate."

Wei continues to look up, his eyes slowly drifting downwards, before he finally closes them. "This is so comfortable... I could just..."

"You falling asleep on me, old geezer?" you smirk. "I can't steer this boat just so you know."

No response.

"Old man?" you mutter. "... Old man? Wei?"

You shake him.

No response.

You sit up, your heart pounding. "H-hey, come on. You can't be that heavy a sleeper. Stupid old geezer, wake up! Come on!"

Nothing from Wei. He's just silent, his eyes closed, a peaceful look on his face.

"Did... did he..."

"C-come on, old man..." you stammer, trying to keep your cool. "Don't... don't leave me like this. What kinda shitty death is this. You... you can't-"

"BLEH!" Wei springs up, startling you off the cabin, and almost falling overboard the boat before he catches you. That piece of shit, did he just...?

"You jackass!" you yell.

Wei grunts. "Come now boy, I thought you enjoyed childish pranks."

"My pranks have a little more finesse than that!"

"Didn't you blow up an office?"

"More finesse, dammit!"

The two of you share a laugh... then spend the rest of the day catching fish. They're really picking up the pace lately, and are biting a hell of a lot more. Things are finally starting to look up.

Honestly, the weekend wasn't as bad as you would have thought.

Once you reach the gates, Wei places a hand on your shoulder. "Well, this is it. Once we step through that gate, it's business as usual, Ryoji. Don't expect me to start letting you off with any of your misdemeanours. We'll be back to principal and student. Understand?"

He places out his hand, offering a handshake. You accept, and his grip is firm and harsh. "But you still have to buckle down as a student," he warns you. "Akihito tells me you have much homework to be catching up on, and Tekina informs me that you're due to help her in her lab as part of three different detentions."

"Yeah, yeah, whatever..."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwunJgLsm5U

You step through the gates once more, and return to school.

When you last left, you felt yourself struggling to describe your feelings for this place. It's the home of so much tragedy, so much pain... and frankly the class schedule is pretty shitty. A hell-hole among hell-holes, and yet... you couldn't find yourself putting it into words.

"Hi Ryoji!" you see Alice passing by the courtyard, looking for a nice bench to sleep under. "Hi Wei!"

Wei gives a smile and waves back. "Good morning, Alice. I hope you are having a wonderful day."

"Sure thing!" she give him a salute. "Whatever my friend says, goes!"

Wei gives a small chuckle to himself as he walks on and you begin to part ways. "Still her friend. Fancy that."

You let out a sigh as you remember that you have to return to classes. Yet when you arrive in the homeroom... it's just Akihito and Yamano cleaning up.

"Oh, Ryoji!" Yamano smiles. "You're back from your trip!"

"Sure am," you reply, before looking around. "Uhh... it is Monday, right?"

Akihito nods. "A busy weekend. We decided to let Class 2 off for the day, to rest up."

"That's unlike you," you remark. "Are you healthy?"

Akihito smirks. "I just felt my students deserve it. Run along before I make you use today to catch up."

"... You're healthy, right?" you ask. With genuine concern.

Akihito raises an eyebrow. "The hell are you talking about? I'm fine. Run along, Shida."

As you leave and wander the hallways, you're approached by Tekina. "Oh, Ryoji!" she exclaims. "Saki was just by. She asked me to tell you that she's at the dorms, with a surprise for you."

"Thanks for the info."

"And don't forget you have to-"

"Help out with lab," you wave your hand. "Yeah, yeah... by the way Tekina... thank you."

"For what?" she tilts her head.

You shrug. "You helped keep me here."

Tekina pauses. "Is... that a sarcastic thank you, or...?"

"No, I mean it."

You walk off, heading towards the dorms. This place has a hold on you... just like it did with Wei. You always wondered how that old man could have stuck around for over sixty years of his life in this school. There's been tragedy, there's been pain, there's been stress, there's been loss. But then you look at your gain. A group of best friends you never could have expected. The love of your life. A purpose.

"That was a wonderful trip, Ryoji. I don't know why, but you can adapt to any situation."

"I didn't have to adapt," you tell her. "That was all me."

You step into the lounge of the dorms and-

"SUUUUURPRIIIIIISE!"

You're taken aback as Saki stands before all of your friends.

"Welcome back, Ryoji!" Akemi yells, waving a small flag.

"What's this?" you ask.

Saki throws her arms around you and plants a kiss on your cheek. "We all just thought that after last weekend you'd need a little break. So we organised a little party!"

"We've got a karaoke machine and everything!" Ken shows off the machine by the tv.

"I'm so gonna kick Kobashi's ass at it!" Rei laughs.

"Karaoke isn't competitive..." Kosuke sighs.

You had no idea how to describe it before. But now...

"I love this place," you smile.

"Okay, first song will be a group one!" Saki exclaims. "It's all part of my five point plan for better team-building!"

"We need something that rocks!" Akio shouts, miming an air guitar.

"How about a shanty?" Nanami suggests.

"We need something to show off Sayeka's beautiful voice!" Chihiro throws out.

"D-do I have to sing?" Hoshi asks.

You shake your head and make your way to the machine. "Okay, I'll settle this, losers. First song will be... uhhh..."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=giXekJYwlik

Saki hands you the microphone. "Sounds like you just volunteered for the song."

"Hey now, I-"

"VOLUNTEER! VOLUNTEER! VOLUNTEER!" they all begin to chant, and you give in.

Yeah... you love this part.

Thanks so much for playing! Holy crap, 100 threads! It took over three years, but we finally hit a big milestone. Couldn't have gone this far without all you players, I hope I've provided you all with enough entertainment of the last 3 years. And yes, there'll be plenty more stories to come with Ryoji, Saki, Ken, Akemi, Akio, Rei, Kaz, Mayu, Kiriko and the entire cast of characters.

The next of which may even come in the next week! Obviously my schedule makes no definitive promises, so follow the Twitter for any updates! This thread has been amazingly fun, it's good to be back, and I'm motivated to bring you more DGA more frequently going forward, because damn I love this.

>Player Questions
Let's use this for full-on retrospective of the last 100 threads. Favourite moments, favourite characters, favourite parts of this thread specifically, favourite arcs, so on and so forth, the whole shebang. I'll also be answering any questions myself about the history of the quest! Here's to another 100 episodes, and beyond!

So... I guess in the end my favourite part is that exists in the first place, and that you've cared so much and for so long.

Thanks for running Booker, it was a great thread.

>PQ
Well shit, that's a lot to answer.

Already listed some of them further above into the thread but I'm always a sucker for a good Nat 100 so when it lined up with the Season 1 finale it was fucking fantastic. Hell, I even like when we crash and burn like our first couple of outings with Kaz, nearly letting Anri kick the bucket literal half a thread into her debut was tense and our shitty SAN roll opened up the Magic Mineral sub plot earlier than expected for you I'd imagine. And you're a god damn monster for finding a way to off Nina twice in increasingly awful ways and I know you're busy thinking of another one for the trinity.

As for characters I'm always a fan of the useless joke character being a fucking machine so Isamu getting his boost was great and was a fantastic way to cap off the Tournament Arc after Rei's supersonic Akira save roll and all the other fights. Obviously mentioning the MC's is a must but I do really like how we've actually been able to tweak what their personalities were like (although RIP Wingman Kaz, killed like 3 threads in by Insane Mineral Kaz).

As for arcs MORE FILLER ARCS WHEN YOU FUCK I do enjoy the mini arcs we've been getting with Archdemons lately, it's good that we're getting something that feels like we're actually progressing without taking a dozen threads to get through.

And although it's probably weird comparison the main thing I liked about this thread was it like just picking up some action figures as a kid and just smashing them together in fights so if one of them broke (ie died) it wasn't too bad because it was cool and you had backups you could use, which you can't really do in the main threads since you know, we'll probably lynch you. Although that being said getting a glimpse into Wei's backstory was great if only to see the shit that the guy's been through.

Anyway, the tl;dr of this wall is thanks for running this wild ride Booker, looking forward to the next 100 threads, hopefully we'll get at least halfway through before the heat death of the universe.

Also would we still have had both Man of Yam's alive if Wei ate Magic Mineral?

>What inspired you to make it and at what point into development did you decide to actually run it?

I had followed quests semi-regularly for years before I ever actually ran anything. I eventually ran WrestleQuest in the last few weeks of /tg/ allowing them, and wanted to do something while it was on "Season Break" (It of course never made it to a proper second season for various reasons). I wanted to go with something anime as fuck. SMT and Fire Emblem were two major influences, but I didn't want to do a fanfiction quest as I wanted my own cast of characters to work with. So instead I went with an original setting, but one that played off of a lot of familiar tropes. My original idea was "What if one of those classic shonen academies where they had powers and fought monsters was attended by the equivalent of Francis from Malcolm in the Middle? A no-good skeevy delinquent?"

From there came the idea for Ryoji, and he developed over time. Characters who changed greatly from the initial planning stages that come to mind are Saki, who initially I planned to be a male character, but changed her to balance out what I thought would be the most prominent main cast. Sayeka I thought would be the main love interest, and Akio I had simply planned to be the shithead rival with little thought put into his human elements or his mountain family backstory. Akemi too I initially conceived as being somewhat like Mizuki was here; a prissy yet determined person who worked hard but came up short. You can see a glimpse of that in the first thread before I really landed on what her character would be, which ended up being the overly-positive cartoonish comic relief desperate to keep up spirits. Isamu also leaned more into his dumb pervert role than his chuuni attitude.

>Also if everyone in Wei's class lived, who's ancestors would they have been?

I had no plans for the others to be ancestors of everyone in the class, I didn't want to bloat every part of the OG class with family histories. Of course, if Jun had survived he would have been Takeshi's grandfather and not his great uncle. One I considered when planning the thread was also giving Satoshi some kind of relation to Nina, but I mainly went with those who were already established to have family history in the school like Saki, Kiriko and Akio, and I had established Nina's parents as being normal humans who had no idea what the school was, so that line was cut.

I have no idea how I would have went with that write-in, I was leaning towards fighting with both Misawas at once but having a peaceful resolution.

In the time you've been running, what are some of the positive surprises from the audience? Be it votes, reactions or otherwise.

Also, what stuff has come out after DGA that you feel helped in it's ongoing creation, i.e shit that inspired you yo.

Just about all of them. The major push early on towards a Saki and Ryoji romance, developing Ryoji and Kaz into their respective final products, and generally the positive response to most of the characters and plot-lines have been positive surprises to say the least.

SMT is always a stated influence but of course Persona 5 came out after DGA had begun and was a wealth of extra influences. The MHA and Konosuba anime started slighty before DGA but they also provided good influence towards the presentation of the action and the character based comedy respectively. And on a somewhat related tangent that's a funny story, I will say that while DGA was running I did see a particular Marvel Movie that had me rewriting some long term plans because the arc in question (which I still haven't got to) was very similar to that movie.

It will be a special "OVA" episode between seasons 3 and 4.

There, a definitive place for the Beach Episode. That's when it happens.

What would Momota have turned into?
And what kinda boost would Wei have gotten if he did chomp down on it?
>>
>>3750843

Momota would have become something similar to Kenta, while Wei would have mostly resisted the stone, as he wasn't tempted and corrupted by the thing to the level of the others.
