Previous threads: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?tags=One%20Piece%20Bounty%20Photographer%20Quest
MC Pastebin: https://pastebin.com/XGUgpV79

Cover-art kindly provided by our noble artiste, Draw-anon, who generously took time off repainting the Sistine Chapel for us. Look upon our prettyboy protagonist. Look upon his devilish smile and despair.

In last thread’s episode of - how strange, you appear to be a Marine now. Huh. Anyway, after your Etelnar Livar Lolonoa Zolo prevented you from potentially killing yourself via meme, you had a heart-to-heart regarding fathers with Sanji, revealed your Logia powers to several of the Strawhats, and went shopping the next day for CANDY and DIALS. You then took a lovely ride down to the wet and watery Blue Seas, miraculously ending up exceptionally close to the remains of Mocktown (thanks Smoboss), where you now cry bitch tears over your papa...

Also, two of the players revealed themselves as a contractor of a dark god, and demonic tech support, respectively. Astonishingly, neither of them were Satan. This quest is damned. Abandon hope, all ye who enter.

We now return you to your scheduled idiocy.

you passed the Haki check woooo

(Observation Haki +1! DC decreased to 53)

First up, you flick your Haki on, spreading your awareness out. There’s an infantryman passing by, probably on patrol, but as long as you keep the volume low - even with the door open - it should be fine.

You keep staring at Smoboss’ closed-eyed face as he waits for the full effect of your current stupidity to slam down on him. “Devil Fruits really do taste like shit...” you say, your voice full of Mourning and Regret and Oh Seasus My Mouth.

You feel Smoboss flinch and then tense under your hug (he’s not thrown you off yet, you’re gonna absorb every second of this), watch his face twitch, eyes slowly opening to narrow bands of what-the-fuckery glaring. Your Haki is quick to inform you of the building frustration-resignation-urge-to-throttle-you that you’ve come to associate with Smoboss finding out you’ve pulled yet more dumbass shit. If you’re going to be sentenced to three-hundred years of latrine duty, you’re going to make it worth it.

“Brat.” A warning tone. You respond with the appropriate lack of self-preservation by widening your red-rimmed, shining eyes and looking as pathetic and innocent as possible.

Mustn’t laugh. Don’t laugh. Don’t.

“Yes, Smoboss?”

“Tell me you’re messing with me.”

“In my defense, Smoboss, it wasn’t voluntary.” It was the trees’ fault. Treacherous vegetation. Why isn’t there a public awareness camapaign about the buggers? “Trees aren’t soft, by the way. Important info that nobody bothered to share with me.”

Smoboss’ emotions flicker to confusion at that, before he apparently dismisses it as typical Flashy weirdness, “You ate a Devil Fruit. By acci- you know what? I can believe that of you. I don’t why I was surprised.”

He sighs, deep and long, reaching a hand up to rub the bridge of his nose. “Congratulations, idiot. What one is it?”

>yer a logia harry

Ahahahahahaha. Um. “It’s, uh, a Static Paramecia. Definitely not a Lightning Logia. Because that would get me transferred. Wink wink.”

Smoboss stares at you through half-lidded eyes, expression blank. His emotions feel oddly calm.

“So it’s definitely not one of the Invincible Powers,” he flatly states.

“Absolutely definitely positively a big N-O on that one, Smobosserino. Highly lacking in Logia-having-ness here. Ha! Me! A Lightning dude!” You snort, rolling your eyes in utterly convincing disbelief. “That would be... shocking.”

Smoboss covers part of his face with one hand. Then the other disappears from your back to cover the rest. Despite that, his groan is resoundingly clear.

“... We getting up now, bossman?”

“You can. I’m staying down here a while.”

You untangle your arms from his jacket and clamber up, hoping it’ll dry quickly. Better wipe the last tears from your eyes too, just in case. “Sooooo. Uh.”

“You have a Static Paramecia,” Smoboss interrupts, voice slightly muffled by the hands. “Just... don’t tell anyone otherwise. I’ll sort out some kind of training for you, separate from Mina and Yosaku.”

You tilt your head, confused. “Who’s Yosaku?”

The hands move, eyes glaring up at you. “Go away.”

You swagger at high speed out the door, feeling a spike of bewilderment-realization-horror-fury behind you, and close it behind you.

Hm. You should find Klaus and convince him not to kill you. BUT. You should also change out of this jacket.

You sulk down at it as you head over to your cabin, greeting several infantry on the way. The problem with flinging yourself at your commanding officer isn’t that they can’t actually see what you’re wearing when you’re hugging them, which rather ruins the effect of a torn, charred, blood-stained jacket. Booooo.

Your cabin is just as you left it, so you dress quickly - maybe you should get a new uniform soon, with the promotion; even wear your coat over your shoulders! Exciting! - when you suddenly sense it.

Sense HIM.

“Oh fuck,” you whisper, hands stilling on your clean shirt buttons, as the door-handle slowly, sloooowly turns.

“Welcome baaaaack, prettyboy~” the hellspawn coos, as the door creaks open.

>SWORDPAPA I WUZ GOOD BOI

Fortunately, you have the perfect plan for this! Klaus wants to ton inflict terror on you - to render you unable to come up with a defense. This is useless in the face of your cunning mind and brilliant sucking-up skills.

FACE THE WRATHLESS SYMPATHY-INDUCING TACKLE-HUG, KLAUS!!

The second the door is open far enough to reveal a grinning, leering Klaus in all his lack of glory, you’re on him. Outstretched arms, aimed with the beauty of Observation Haki, disregard his sudden flinch back and swing around his neck, your own body thudding into his, while his face and emotions scream of panicked confusion.

“KLAAAAAAUUUUUSSSS~!!” You try to fill your voice as well as your emotions with the sheer sense of missing him, just in case he tries aobservation on you - it isn’t all that hard, you DID miss him, even if he’s gonna murder you. “I MISSED YOU AND OUR LESSONS BUT I GOT BETTER ANYWAY AND I GOT A RIVAL AND I STABBED A GOD TO DEATH AND I THINK I CAN CAN MAYBE DO FLYING SLASHES NOW AND I’M SORRY I WASN’T HERE PLEASE DON’T KILL ME—“

“Ngh??????” You didn’t think it was possible to make question marks so obvious, but Klaus manages it. You’re kind of impressed, or would be if you had time to do anything more than cling to him and try to make him not want to stab you.

“I - uh.” You feel more than see Klaus attempt to touch you, then pull his arms back, as if confused as to what he’s meant to do with them. As long as they’re not holding something stabby, you’re fine with it. ... Although a hug would be nice.

You turn sad puppy eyes up at him, and he stares down to meet them in visible horror. “This... wasn’t what I had planned. At all. Rival? Stabbed a god? What?” Then he frowns, hands moving to grip either side of your collar. “Wait, you figured out flying slashes?”

I wonder if flashy gets good enough at armament and widening/flying slashes, could he cut something with his will alone?

“Sort of, yeah? Lolonoa showed me. And I can do a, uh, cut-deepening... thing... too? Also a doctor told me I can’t train for two days. Just so you know.”

Klaus raises an eyebrow at you, expression pointed. “It’s kind of like you’re listing your accomplishments and reasons why I can’t train you until you pass out.”

“I would never!”

He tugs you up slightly by the collar, smirk reappearing, but at least he only shakes you gently. That’s good, right? Right? “Prettyboy... in two days, you’d better be ready.”

“... To die?”

“Pretty much!” He lets go, smirk widening, and pats your head condescendingly instead. “Now get off me.”

You yank your arms back before he can chop them off, stumbling backwards a step, into your cabin. “I really did improve!”

“I believe you. That’s why I’m not ignoring doctor’s orders and kicking your ass already. So - Roronoa can do flying slashes, huh?”

“Yeah. I saw it.” YOU’RE SAFE. For now...

Klaus huffs, sounding put out. “Typical. Fucking pirate. All right, prettyboy, once your chest is healed - ribs? - I’m gonna speed up your lessons. Your dumb ass managed to jump ahead a step while you were gone.”

>Oh, yeah, I activated Armament too. Can’t control it, though.

"Photos...?" Your response is as sweet as the candy you really want to eat. Except for the part where you raise the camera and take a picture of his apparent freak-out, casually pressing a couple of buttons to print it.

"That's not- WHAT ARE YOU--"

You hold up the photo of his white face and twitching eyes, smiling happily as you pass it over. He takes it instictively, twitches more, glares at you, and then slams it in your face.

"Uph-pah!" At least he's not slicing you up with the sharp edges?

"When the FUCK did you breed?!" He leans in close, pulling the photo down to glare at you, expression somewhere between furious and worried.

Enough fucking with him. For now. You have a slight aversion to needling people until they snap and needle you back (with swords)."I adopted. My precious Noodle."

You hold the camera up, widescreen to him, flicking to the gallery and bringing up pictures of your precious snek child. The one you had Chopper take of you lounging on its head while it sunbathes is adorable. "See? My cutey~!"

Klaus groans, slumping down as you flick through them. "A snake. You got a pet... giant snake."

"No." Your eyes narrow. "I adopted it."

"You can't-" He pauses, reconsidering. "It has human intelligence?"

"Yep!" Not really unusual on the Grand Line, after all.

Another groan, louder this time. "I'm pretty sure you can't legally adopt non-humanoid species, prettyboy."

"You can, it's just a crapload of work," you correct, being a master of weird legalities. "Anyway, this is Noodle. I love it, and it's my baby. I had to leave it in Skypiea - well looked after! - because it's too big, but I've made sure it won't eat anyone else, so it's not too bad."

"........" says Klaus, eyes dead. "Right. Okay. Congrats."

"Do you think Smoboss would let me bring it down to the ship?"

"Highly no."

You sigh, putting the camera down. "Yeah, that's about what I figured. I'm gonna have to find a way to call up there, or at least get good enough with my Logia I can visit often."

"Yeah, shit, you mentioned -" Leaning back, Klaus gazes up at the ceiling, as if in silent prayer. "Logia. Okay. I give up. What is it?"

"Well, I'm pretending it's a Static Paramecia so I don't get reassigned, but Lightning."

Klaus doesn't look down. "Lightning. Great. That's normal. Hasn't been seen in a couple of centuries, but sure. Anything else, you overachiever?"

It's probably best to leave the Dials for now, before Klaus decides it's better to behead you. "That's all!" Being Lolonoa's rival isn't really important, is it? Except to Tashigi.

"Whoop-de-doo," he mutters, fixing you with a tired stare. "All right, prettyboy, you've had your fun. Lessons restart in two days - until then, practice your Observation, and whatever forms you can."

You toss him a salute, bouncing on your heels. "Aye-aye, noble teacher!"

"And what the hell is that thing on your back?"

"Oh, that's my heat lance. It sets things on fire."

"... I'm going now. Might stab you later. Welcome back and all that, blondie."

He turns to leave, subdued as a man can be after his brain is broken, almost drifting outside the cabin.

Totally worth it. And you didn't die! Not even a little bit!

One of the infantry tells you she's recovering in her cabin, which is good - it's obviously not serious enough for a long stay in the medbay.

You head over, noticing how few crew are aboard at the moment - on patrol through the remains of Mocktown, or guard duty at the makeshift prison ashore until they can be transported, apparently - And give her door a quick knock.

"Sword inspector, open up!"

A moment's pause. "Do you have a warrant?"

... Smartass. You fish a receipt and stub of pencil out of your pockets and scrawl 'WARRANT 4 SWORD THINGS' on the paper. "Yes! I'm coming in!"

You shove the door open, waving the receipt around. "I hear you have swords in this cabin," you tell Tashigi seriously, while she sits at her small writing desk, amusement obvious. "I'm here to make sure they're well-treated and regularly fed with the blood of pirates."

"I see you haven't lost your sense of humour over he last few days," she muses, placing some paperwork down. "That's unfortunate."

"I'm hilarious," you inform her, because you are the soul of wit. "You can drop and give me twenty for that blatant disrespect, Lieutenant Junior Grade."

Tashigi gives you a look that's so pointed, it'll probably be registered as a Meitou. Then she motions towards her leg, which is wrapped in a plaster cast. "I'll pass. SOME of us have actually been busy the last few days, Flashman."

>I've been busy! I baked a lot! And took photos!

"I've been busy! I baked a lot! And took photos! And killed a cult leader!" SO THERE.

"And couldn't sneak away for five minutes to tell anyone that Nico Robin hadn't murdered you?"

"... It was a LOT of baking. By the way, the Strawhats are a hundred percent batshit crazy." You slump down in the other chair, suddenly exhausted at just the thought of them.

Tashigi smiles. "So you fit right in?"

You sulk at her. "I mean it! Their captain is - ugh. And Lolonoa is... well. Oh! Their Doctor's cute! He's a fluffy Mink kid!"

"I... don't even know what to say about that," Tashigi says, blinking owlishly. "That's incredibly rare."

"He's so soft~" you croon, fingers twitching as if burying themselves in adorable Chopper-fur. "I want twelve of him."

Shaking her head, Tashigi neatens her paperwork. "The Commodore told us you called yesterday, but... Nico Robin really didn't tell anyone about you?"

"I blew the head off a giant bird and the guy riding it right in front of her with a cannonball," you explain. "I wouldn't spill the beans on me either after that."

This is kind of a lie, because you actually blew the rider's head off with a cannonball, not the bird - but you feel a little bit of self-censoring to make you not seem like a homicidal maniac might be good. Even though it was clearly self defence, the Strawhats DID seem a little averse to the de-heading (which is like beheading, but messier).

Tashigi, bless her sword-obsessed heart, doesn't flinch, although she does look pained. "You're really using cannonballs now?

"They're practical. I can't blow up a giant bird's head with a bullet." Yet.

Tashigi sighs. "I suppose..." From here, you can see mottled bruises and grazes, where her sleeved ride up or collar down. Clearly Mocktown didn't go quietly. "And no more drinking by yourself, all right? Ig- Curly and I couldn't find anyone who knew what crew your... drinking partner was with."

Aah, good old Captain Usopp. You'll keep quiet about him, in case he does the sensible thing and goes back home to grow turnips. Instead, you lean back on the chair, seeing if you can balance it on two legs despite the ocean's sway. "Dunno, just some pirate. Heeeey, by the way..."

"How's that Wado Whatever sword?" Your query is completely innocent, naturally. "As sword inspector it's very important that I know. Lolonoa's declared me his eternal rival, and apparently that sword's a last gift from his master and stuff, veeeeeery dramatic."

Tashigi gives you a Look. "Eternal rival. Really, Flashman?"

"It's true! He was talking to pirate-me about the guy who captured him- that was Marine-me, if you somehow forgot - and he said he'd decided the guy was his rival. So now I have, like, eternal dibs on him. Ya snooze, ya lose, and all that." You fold your arms and nod in triumph.

Tashigi is less impressed, reaching up to adjust her glasses with visible annoyance. "First of all, pirates don't get to call dibs, because they're pirates. Secondly - actually, it's a repeat of the first point. Pirate opinions don't matter."

"Look." You uncross your arms and make vague motions with your hands, trying to figure out how to explain. "It's like - You remember what I told you about my dad's compass?"

"Yes?"

"Lolonoa's sword is... basically that, to him." You let the chair fall forwards onto all four legs again, leaning towards her as you do; and then you share the whole story of Zolo's previous rival, the girl who beat him in a thousand spars, followed by her tumble into dead-ification, and the sword that was supposed to be here. The sword that became his.

"Wado, to him, it's..." You trail off, unable to find the right words. "It's not just a sword to him. And some things are more important than being a pirate or a Marine. You understand, right? Tashigi?"

Tashigi's lips are pursed as she watches you, expression closed off. "Flash- Harry. This man has killed people. Marines, even. Whatever his connection to this sword, even if came into his hands legally - you want to place a weapon, a meitou at that, into the hands of a pirate?" She speaks slowly, every word crystal-clear and ringing with pointed disbelief. "You want to stain its blade with more undeserving blood? Is that what you're saying? Because - Harry, I could perhaps see giving him back a, a sentimental item like your compass, something that can't be used to - to murder and commit crimes, but this? Wado?" The final words sound like a plea. "Am I misunderstanding?"

I have a question. Are there actual Marine casualties from the Strawhats?
>>
>>3560743
IIRC QM has confirmed that they've killed people. Not directly and intentionally but when you're doing as much damage as they are, you tend to have deaths.
>>
>>3560743
Yes. Not generally deliberately, but in the heat of battle, they don't have the ability to make 100% sure nobody dies. Sometimes people bleed out referendum expected - others just don't get medical attention in time, or go into shock or have heart attacks when they have wounds they probably would have survived.

Not MANY Marines have died to them, but some (primarily when they were rescuing Zoro from Hina). Ennies Lobby hasn't happened but if it does and goes the same as canon, that's a shitload more they kill.

They haven't killed any of your own crew. Yet.

You shake your head. "That's not right.I don't want to give it to him. I want to be the one he has to defeat to get it back. I trust your abilities, but I feel like it's my duty now after everything that happened."

A groan of frustration, and Tashigi brushes her hair back in a shape movement. "Harry, he shouldn't have the CHANCE to get it back. I get that you feel there's some kind of... bond there - between you and him, not him and Wado - but you really don't owe him anything. He's a pirate. You're a Marine. Your ONLY duty is to arrest him or kill him, not to - to offer him an opportunity. Everyone has something they treasure, that doesn't mean..."

She breaks off and clasps her hands together, face determined. "Harry, you've spent... a while with the Strawhats. How do you feel about them?"

I like this except the Vivi bit, making points to counteract the negatives that we're in the middle of listing will only push her into the Stockholm Syndrome view even more, thinking we're making excuses. And rather than "probably," just "I don't think" since the former seems like we're guessing.

Besides, I don't think the way they treat Vivi runs counter to the Revolutionary connection. Her family was the only one of the original Nobles that descended.

"Harry. They're *pirates*." She leans forwards, hands still clasped, speaking almost gently. "They are, by default, bad people. If they just wanted to, I don't know, travel the world, or fight strong opponents, they could be bounty hunters - like Roronoa was. But they aren't. They willingly sail under a pirate flag. They hurt and kill - I get that they're not ravening monsters, but if you understand that it's your job to arrest them, then you should understand it's also your job not to risk the possibility of increasing the danger they pose."

"It's one sword," you argue.

"Harry, there's a reason meitou are so valuable, and it isn't because they have important histories, or notable swordsmiths attached to them. It's because meitou are superior to other swords. They cut deeper, they rarely break -" She leans back again, brows lowering. "I can't give you Wado back. Not if there's a decent chance it'll end up back in his hands. I'm sorry, but I can't."

>>3560897
To be fair, if you just went searching for One Piece WITHOUT being a pirate, Tashigi wouldn't care. There's enough regular treasure hunters out there. If you're flying a jolly roger, while old enough to understand that being a pirate is illegal, then in her eyes you're pretty much advertising a distinct lack of morals.
A dumbass kid like Sabo flying a pirate flag would get a stern lecture. Luffy, despite his dumbassery, actually understands what he's doing.

>>3560907
Interestingly, by Alabasta going so differently, Tashigi never had to face the decision of law vs morality, and never helped the Strawhats get to the bomb, or really saw the Strawhats helping out. She never got a lecture from Smoker to follow her own justice and figure out what was right.

(Sure, they helped take down Baroque Works, but Crocodile WAS going to kill them, and the Princess is clearly a part of their crew. So of course they'd help her.)

Instead, they're just pirates. Not total scum, and more worthy of jailtime than death, but still.

>>3560917
I'm fine with Tashigi keeping the sword actually, it's more her mindset I'm worried about.
But yeah, making Zolo choose between pursuing his rival or his sword will be delicious. And Tashigi potentially gets some of what she wants too. Fire away, cap'n.
>>
>>3560917
>her eyes you're pretty much advertising a distinct lack of morals

"Maybe things aren't so simple, Tashigi."
>>
>>3560858
I doubt the sword’s any safer with Miss “I broke my leg fighting some mook pirates” then it would be with “I broke some ribs killing two elite fighters, incapacitating another, and killing a powerful Logia user”, but okay Tashigi, whatever you say. Or is it in lockup on the ship? Which is arguably even less safe.
>>
Let's get clear here we won't focus on swords, that's not going to happen especially with continuously expanding armory.

So we will fall back on swordsmanship, that will just happened. Lolona will exceed us in that field 100%.

So we pull Zolo into abusive rival relationship where we start using different weapons and methods to beat him up.

Where he grows continuously disappointed, but because he called us his rival he keeps going back and grows depressed with each fight were we use less and less swords.

Thats leads to his skill receding, and depression. Where one day he is forced to break your rival for his own good.

Now we can do it now. Tear away the bandage and break his heart but give him proper rival. Real swordswoman, that love for swords exceeds everyting.

Now will you let Lolona and Tashigi suffer, or give them happy life they both deserves.
Living in their small word of sword, rivals and duelist honor.

Tashigi blinks. "You what?"

"I can't train."

"No, you - a Logia? Really? Is this a prank?"

"Noooooope," you grin. "Already told Smoboss and Klaus, but we're kinda gonna tell the Brass it's a Static Paramecia, or I'll get transferred."

Tashigi laughs, looking genuinely delighted by your eating of a hellish fruit beyond mortal ken. "A static paramecia? So what Logia is it? If you can tell me, I mean-"

You hold up your arm, zapping a couple of sparks off it. "Lightning!"

Tashigi oohs and aahs over it for a good minute - it may not be a sword, but apparently one of the so-called Invincible Powers is enough to impress her anyway - before congratulating you on your new inability to swim (or your ability to electrocute people, whatever). She doesn't even mention the whole god-killing or mink doctor thing, too busy insisting you find out if you can direct your lightning through a sword.

You leave Tashigi's cabin with... thoughts. Thoughts.ylu don't really like thinking. You have an awful, gnawing feeling that you're going to be turning your experiences.ovee and over in your head and coming up with conclusions that Tashigi (and maybe even Smoboss) wouldn't be overly thrilled with.

But you can put it off a while longer. Because with all this bullshit about disguises and messing with people, and straight-up lying to people - and you're a good person, right? A nice person? Sure, you sometimes mislead and manipulate and sometimes it's maybe for your own amusement and personal gain, and --

No-one ever said you were perfect. You're not trying to be a saint or anything. But... Maybe you're a little more of a dick than you thought you were. Than you hoped you were.

And even if you'd dressed it up as 'it was his own fault for jumping to conclusions', maybe it's time to admit that Fop shouldn't be strung along any longer in his assumption. Just because he was a dumbass doesn't make it right to play along with it for so long.

You're pretty sure you're going to come out of this one with broken teeth.

You see Mina beforehand, for a quick chat and to give her some candy - she's thrilled, of course, and you promise her plenty of stories about the weird islands in the sky - and call down greetings to Th, who's happily practicing with her harpoon by the side of the Mist.

But. You can't keep putting it off. Not forever. You take a deep breath, find out where Fop is - the map-room, studying his navigation - and head over.

“I kinda maybe let you believe I was a woman. And I’m not! And it was maybe a dick move to let you go on believing that, but in my defence, I’m an idiot. And possibly more of an asshole than I previously realized, so I apologize for that.”

Fop just... keeps staring. You’re not entirely he’s processed your words, which would make sense, ‘cause you just kind of threw them out there. At him. All at once.

“You -“ He breaks off, blank face turning to a grimace as he ducks his head, hand dropping the pen to rub his forehead, hard. “You’re a man.”

“Yes.”

“A MAN.”

“Yes.

“And you - you let me think... that you - I told THE COMMODORE -“

“To be fair, he was definitely laughing at me, not you.”

Fop’s face buries itself forwards into both hands, bent over the table. “You’ve made me look a fucking idiot.” A muffled, empty voice. You don’t think you’ve heard him swear before, at least not like that. “Even if - were you and Commodore Smoker the only ones who knew I thought...?”

You wince. “Just Klaus?”

“... Klaus. Wonderful. Good. Not like having my sword teacher think I’m a complete idiot is a problem. Thank you so much, Flashman. Next, you’ll -“

He pauses, raising his pale, stricken face to stare at you like he’s had an epiphany. “You’re not royal, are you.”

Ohhhh boy, time to make it worse. Maybe. It’s not such a big deal, right? You try not to wince, forcing the honesty out further. “No, I'm just an orphan from some shithole town. Again, I'm really sorry about letting it go on this long.” You hesitate, then, rapid, “Do you want to hit me? I know I deserve it, and I'll take my licks if that'll make you feel better.”

“I don’t want to hit you,” Fop says conversationally. That’s... good? “Not if you’re okay with being hit. I want to punch you repeatedly in the face until you can’t eat solid food. And then I want to stab you.”

That’s bad.

“Oh. Okay.” You gnaw on the inside of your cheek. “Could you... not do that?”

Fop closes his eyes. You can tell he’s got some kind of breathing exercise going on, by the way his chest moves in, out, in, out, in slow and exaggerated rhythm. “Flashman. You’ve lied to me about a good portion of your identity. Made you think you hold me in your trust. And actually, you were just screwing around with me, for some kind of amusement. It didn’t even gain you any sort of advantage, you just - thought it was funny? I don’t even see what the aim was, here?” He phrases it like a question, eyes opening to lock onto you as he barks out a laugh. “Congratulations! I’m gullible. Good job, Commander. Thank you for the honor.”

>... I really didn’t do it to make fun of you.

This IS the thread where Flashy starts to realise that maaaaybe being a manipulative troll for fun and to get yourself out of justly-deserved trouble MIGHT not be entirely nice.

Not that you CAN’T continue choosing the path of lulz, of course, just that Flashy’s either going to have to stay in denial or accept he’s actually sometimes kind of a dick to people he cares about.

“.... I really didn’t do it to make fun of you,” you mutter. That’s true, right? “Nobody was laughing at you, honestly. They were laughing at me because I look like a woman, which is why you mistook me for one. People are always calling me prettyboy and the like, you know? Nobody ever looked down on you or thought you were stupid because of it, it was always at my expense.” Maybe you sound a little desperate now, because you have Very Important Points to make, before Fop attempts to remove your ability to speak, via impromptu, sword-assisted surgery that you doubt he’s qualified for. At least he’s still looking at you, expression blank as your words spill out, rather than getting up and stabby.

“And the day we met, as I understand it, your life kinda flipped itself over. Because of a duel. With me. And I kinda... felt responsible? When we had our little chat, and you came to that absolutely baffling conclusion, I didn't correct you because you were so sure. So, if it’s any better, I’m even more of an idiot than an asshole? But still, yes, I lied to you when I didn't correct it. I'm not a noble, and I'm not a woman. But that's all. Every stupid joke I make, every stupid action I take is 100% me. You don't have to believe me, but that idiot really is who I am.”

Fop crosses his arms, unblinking. “I already know you’re an idiot. I just thought you were some other things than that, as well. A woman, yes. Noble, yes. Honest, yes. Decent, yes. And now...” He grits his teeth, jaw tending for a moment before it relaxes again, emotion once more vanishing. “I understand that you didn’t actually ever SAY you were a noble or a woman, but you knew what I thought, erroneous or not. And you let me believe it. THAT’S the issue here. The complete lack of basic respect or decency you had for -“ He looks down, eyes flickering with something furious, before they too dull back to nothing as he raises his head. “I know you’ve already said it, but you’re an absolute idiot.”

You nod. “Yes.”

“Do you know what my family teaches regarding people who lie to us? What w- they, do to them?”

You chew on your lip. “Probably nothing nice?”

“Well done.” He stares down again, this time at his notebook, and speaks quietly, “I accept that this wasn’t malicious. And I accept that you’re apparently sorry for it, whatever the reasons for telling me. But I’m not forgiving you.”

Fop's fingers twitch against his notebook. After a few seconds, he answers, almost reluctantly. "I... don't see why not."

A spark of hopeful relief flares in you, before you promptly mentally step on and crush it to dust. You've long learned what that kind of wishfulness ends up with: a fat load of nothing. Still, you'll take what you can get. "Right. Okay. Thank you."

Which not only didn't imply the possibility of Lolonoa retrieving Wado, but also stressed how you wanted to be his rival, thus explaining WHY you'd want Wado back. If this had won, Tashigi would likely have ended up giving you the sword.
Instead, you unfortunately gave Lolonoa's sob-story, thus making her feel like Zolo was pulling some emotional manipulation (which, to be fair, he sort of was) on you and your naivety. Oops.

>these wouuuuunds, they wiiiiiill not heal

Fuck it. Full disclosure. "I got a Logia fruit while I was away," you say, because Seasus knows you've given him enough bullshit that he maybe deserves a little truth. "We're telling people that I got a static based Paramecia instead, so I don't get transfered away. Smoboss, Klaus and Tashigi know."

Fop doesn't look up, but you can him see him take it in by faint flickers of surprise on his face before he smooths it back over to that blank boredom. Noble training, you guess. "I see. It's... good to know that."

You shrug slightly, awkwardly, before stepping back to the door, twisting the handle. "I really am sorry," you mention again, before leaving just as quietly.

Door shut behind you, you step out onto the sparse deck, most of the crew still ashore, and stare out. Ocean on one side, Mocktown's remains on the other. Everything proceeding exactly as it did before you went in there.

"Well," you say to yourself. "Fuck."

"Commander!"

You turn, one of the infantry saluting as he rushes towards you. "The Commodore requests your presence in his office, sir!"

You're pretty sure that means Smoboss said something like, 'find the brat and tell him to get his ass in here', but whatever. "Yeah, sure." Great.

To Smoboss office' it is. Yippee.

You rap at the door, unable to bother messing around, walking in briskly at the summons to enter.

Smoboss takes one look at you and raises an eyebrow. "Do I want to know?"

You pull a face. "Nah. Hit me with business, bossman, I don't really wanna think about things right now."

Smoboss grunts an acknowledgement, although his annoyingly-knowing eyes linger on you for a second before he leans back, dismissing the topic. "I got a call from Garp."

"My condolences."

He ignores you, as is probably sensible. "He wants you and someone else on a mission - a discreet one - to go and..." Now it's Smoboss' turn to pull a face. "To go and meet up with a goddamn pirate."

What. "What," you what.

"I'm aware it's bullshit, brat. Believe me, I've just had words with him." He seems only 'annoyed' despite that, rather than 'ragingly furious'. At least someone's having a good day... "Garp and Firefist went to fight some pirate - Blackbeard, and as far as I can tell, they underestimated the shit out of him."

You frown, leaning forward. "And I'm supposed to meet with this guy?"

"Hell, no!" ... That was enthusiastic. "You're not going anywhere near that guy, he's beyond you. His lackeys are dead, thanks to Garp and his pet Shichibukai, but Blackbeard managed put the hurt on Firefist before he escaped." He breathes a long trail of smoke, annoyance visibly rising by the glint in his eyes. "Now Garp wants to get him medical care, and apparently Firefist's too good for Marine doctors."

You kind of feel like repeating the 'what', because this makes literally zero sense. Instead, you hold your arms out in a universal gesture of 'what the absolute fuck'.

"It's political shit, " Smoboss bluntly states. "I don't know how or why, but the way he refused to give details absolutely stinks of it. Firefist's injuries are apparently serious, yes, but he could requisition senior doctors and surgeons for whatever's needed. Instead, he's trying to keep the injuries a secret from HQ, so much that he'd rather play at bribery with a pirate than send a proper request up the line."

That's... weird. Smoboss doesn't know that Fireplace is Garp's grandson, as far as you're aware, but that doesn't matter - as a Shichibukai, of course Abs is entitled to healthcare. It's not like the Government is overwhelmed with strong pirates wanting the position, even if having Fireplace himself wasn't a PR coup - and to lose another Shichibukai in so short a time would be massively damaging.

So why the hell would he not want expert Government doctors looking after his grandson's boo-boos?

(1/2)
>>
"A pirates' doctor...?" Yup. Weird.

"Trafalgar Law," Smoboss says, lip curling in disgust. "The so-called Surgeon of Death."

Yikes. You've heard of him - not just a doctor on a pirate ship, but a Captain of one. He was in the Blues not overly long ago, you recall... North? South? And now the Grand Line. Not all that far ahead of Strawbrat you think, although he's older and has a larger crew.

"He wants a pirate to... do surgery?... on Firefist." This is the dumbest idea you've ever heard, even if it IS coming from Garp. "Gosh, wow, what a great plan."

Smoboss snorts with blatant agreement. "I've got to be honest, I don't give a crap if Firefist lives or dies. But Garp is pretty damn insistent, and..." He pauses. "It's up to you. I've already told him YOU have to agree to it, or send some of his own crew instead, but for some reason he feels like you're the best one to dump Firefist with Trafalgar. Quick drop-off, pick him up after. Shouldn't take overly long."

"If Trafalgar doesn't kill him," you point out. "Killing a Shichibukai sounds like the sort of thing that earns a pirate bonus points."

"And a hunting-down by Garp," Smoboss adds. "I doubt he'd deliberately kill the little shit, or any escorts. Everything I've read says he's not an impulsive idiot, but like I said, it's up to you." He shrugs.

>What's up with this Blackbeard guy, anyway?

Blegh. This sure is a heaping pile of shit. "What's up with this Blackbeard guy, anyway? He beat both of them? At once?"

"Hardly. From what Garp said, he threw his crew at Garp in some kind of delaying action, and went after Firefist himself." Smoboss smirks, vindication obvious. "They didn't delay all that well. Still, Blackbeard pulled out some kind of Logia that Firefist wasn't expecting, and ended up blowing up half a town. Lot of casualties," he adds, all amusement gone now. "Fucker ran away before Garp got there, and apparently he preferred to look after the Shichibukai rather than pursue the civilian-murdering trash." Smoboss' teeth bare pointedly. "More political bullshit, I'm betting."

One person will be Klaus, due to vote, but I'm just going to let you ICly pick your partner as it was too close between Tashigi and Hat&Sunglasses before. Tashigi IS injured but there shouldn't be fighting, so she's still available.

>muh aniki/oniisan/evil pirate big bro

Hmmmm.

Go to escort a Shichibukai who kinda wants to kill you... to another pirate who'd probably be cool with killing you... on an off-the-books, inexplicable request mired in a probably political ahitfest.

But it gets you off the ship and away from the horrible awkwardness that's Leona going to to ensue from your recent revelations, so maybe potential death is a good idea. Although it means not helping Fop out with his lessons, but a request from a Vice-Admiral is reason enough, right?

You sigh. "Do I have a set meeting point with Trafalgar, or am I supposed to hunt him down?"

Smoboss looks... mildly surprised. "You meet up with Garp to collect Firefist, and they'll tell you where to meet him. Garp's the one arranging it, he just needs a discreet escort for Firefist. You really want to do this?"

"Might as well," you shrug. "If the new Shichibukai dies a fortnight after he starts, I doubt it looks good."

"Fuck PR," Smoboss states. Yikes. "Still, if that's what you want... how about taking your two lackeys with you? A secret Acid Logia sounds like a good emergency trump card, and it'll get them some experience."

"And get them out of your way for a while?"

"I didn't say that," Smoboss says, though he clearly meant it.

>Yeah, I'll take those two off your hands. Don't say I never give you anything! ... Like heart problems.

"I'll never deny you give me heart problems, brat," Commodore Jerkboss sighs, kicking back, boots up on the paperwork. You can't help but sxowl pointedly at that. "You'll have to leave pretty much immediately, once we find a boat suitable - Garp's only about a day out from here right now."

"My boat from Skypiea is fine, if it's.only that far," you volunteer. "I wouldn't take her on a round-the-world jaunt, but she's in good shape, and can fit a few more crew."

"Perfect. Get some supplies - enough for a week, Garp can damn well supply you if you need more." He reaches idly down to the desk drawer, flicking through a load of small, flicking items - Eternal poses for the local area, judging by the one he throws at you. "Get back as soon as possible, and call me or Ga- no, call me if there's any trouble. And if it all goes to shit, feel free to kill both Firefist and Trafalgar if necessary." He cocks his head, considering. "And don't let on you're a Logia unless you absolutely have to. Anything else?"

"All good here, Smoboss!" You salute him like the expert professional that you are, which means so quick and casual it's more like waving your hand near your forehead.

"Don't forget to write the report while you're sailing," he adds.

Boooo. "Sah, yes, sah!"

"And don't get kidnapped."

You groan, already heading out the door. "You never let me have any fuuuuun~"

Okay.

Professionalism.

First up, supplies - you find an infantryman and give them a quick list and directions to your small ship, along with orders for Hat and Sunglasses to pack their kit and get aboard.

What else, what else... screw it, you have some time for goodbyes, while supplies ae loaded. If you're quick.

Mina and Yu are easily found again - you probably don't want to interrupt Fop - Klaus and Curly are who-knows-where - and Tashigi is still in her cabin, probably writing sonnets dedicated to the sharpness of a blade, or some other weirdness.

When you knock on the door and tell her you're leaving (again) though, she surprises you by hastily grabbing a bulky package from somewhere in the room and shoving it into your hands.

"A new uniform! Mina and I got it for you as a promotion gift," she says, smiling far too innocently. "Everything should fit, the ship's tailor did a little work as well... and if you don't wear it, Mina will cry."

.... Dear Seasus, she's more evil than the Strawhats' Witch. "Gee. Thanks."

Tashigi smiles wider, reaching to pat your shoulder. "I'm sure you'll look lovely."

"I hope you trip and fall on a sword."

"If only..."

"Huh?"

She shakes her head. "Nothing! Good luck on your mission, whatever it is."

"Appreciated, Lieutant Junior Grade," you croon, escaping before she can hobble after you and hit you.

Supplies should be loaded - now all you need to do is get aboard the... actually, your ship doesn't have a name.

What to call it?

>(Boaty McBoatface is not allowed, sadly.)

By the way, before I forget (because I already did), you have four Thunder Dials. I’m going to say you can store one regular weapon or several smaller weapons (such as several daggers) in each.

What do you want to carry in the Dials? This means you may not be able to withdraw them in public without revealing your Logia-ness.

(If you don’t store the lance/meteor hammer in a Dial, I’m assuming you leave them aboard the White Mist, as they’re linked to Arthur’s identity.)

Traversing the gangplank, you stand on the deck, hands on hips and legs akimbo, as you revel in the satisfaction of technically commanding your own crew aboard your own vessel.

“I’m in charge of you, now,” you tell your minions.

“Uh, aniki, you were in charge of us before?”

“Shhhhhhh.” You holds a finger to your lips, eyes gleaming, “I am become Commanding Officer, leader of men.”

Hat and Sunglasses look at each other with indescribable expressions, before saluting. “Whatever you say, anik- Commander!”

“Where are we headed, chief?”

You take a glance at the eternal pose to where Garp is docked, and hope your navigation skills are up to snuff. “That-a-way! Let’s get the rigging sorted and head out as fast as possible.”

There’s another short while as the ship gets made ready for sail, but it’s surprisingly good quality. Whoever donated this was clearly very happy about Enel’s death.

To sum up:

Cover everything professionally, but leave out your own Haki and eating the Froot of Sparkiness.

You will be saying that Enel was a Logia and that you killed him via seastone and stabby (seastone is still yours by right of looting). You’ll be mentioning Dials but sort of hand-waving them? And Vivi is a hostage, so sad.

Does this cover everything?

Okay, changing to:

Cover everything professionally, but leave out your own Haki and eating the Froot of Sparkiness.

You will be saying that Enel was a Logia and that you killed him via seastone and stabby (seastone is still yours by right of looting) plus a good amount of luck and surprise on your part.

You’ll be mentioning Dials but sort of hand-waving the combat uses. Household stuff is okay.

Vivi is a hostage, but may be developing Stockholm Syndrome.

You’ll be mentioning the Poneglyph, because you have zero reason to suspect it’s anything more than boring historical stuff.

Ah, Strawhats. Dem bounties sure will be going up...

Writing update.
>>
>report

While Hat and Sunglasses man the helm and keep an eye on the weather, you settle down on deck to write up your report.

Casually side-stepping exactly HOW you ended up with the Strawhats (clearly you took advantage of the opportunity to get aboard their ship and obtain photos/information, and definitely didn’t get drunk and kidnapped), you Cover the whole thing in a decent amount of detail.

Without your Haki or Logia, obviously. Or training Lolonoa in Kami-e. If he just happened to pick it up from seeing you use it, well, he’s a talented guy, isn’t he? Curse his competence!

You play up taking Enel by surprise with seastone, making yourself sound reasonably skilled, but with the advantage of a crap-load of luck to have found such it lying around; your eating of the Devil Fruit goes conveniently forgotten.

Hopefully by the time you reveal it, you’ll be a high enough rank that the Brass can’t do anything more than get mildly pissy at what will be revealed as a blatant cop-out there.

Oops!

Vivi... you’re not sure about this. She!s obviously not a hostage, but the Strawhats did keep up the act she was one with you (although not very well). Unsure, you make a brief mention of her possible Stockholm Syndrome, deciding marking her as a definite pirate probably wouldn’t be good for her country. It’s not too late for her to get bored and go back home, after all.

Dials... you hand-wave the combat uses, but mention the household types. That means conveniently not saying HOW the giant golden ship was flying, but you can always shrug and say you don’t know.

Apart from that, it’s... all pretty much as happened.

>Don’t mention what name you went by.
>Mention your identity as Arthur.

The sun sets eventually; you’ll be working in shifts through the night to make sure you don’t drift off course, although it’s safer to not try to make good speed during darkness, on a ship with only three crew. Anchoring isn’t the best idea in the Grand Line, though, not on a vessel this size.

You slip your report into a folder and close it over, for transfer to Garp’s ship when you reach it. Sunglasses has already gone to sleep, and you should probably go as well, if you want to be up and ready for your own watch.

Cue your greatest battle yet... can you defeat Klaus for the right to your damn bed, or will you be sleeping on the deck?!

>i didn’t go to the academy for eight years to be called prettyboy, mostly because i didn’t go for eight years anyway. but still!

It’s still early, and yet somehow too late for this bullshit. You fix him with your most deadpan stare. “That’s COMMANDER Prettyboy on my own vessel, you... sword-hobo.”

Klaus’ mouth widens into an O of mock shock. “Sword-hobo! Well, I never! That’s the worst thing I’ve ever been called! How will I ever regain my honor?”

You consider. “Have you tried seppuku?”

“That’s the thing where I stab you in the face, right, Private Prettyboy?”

“Commander!” Why the hell is he- no, you know why he’s here. You missed way too many lessons. And also, he’s nuts. “Does Smoboss know you’re here?”

He shrugs. “Left a message, relax a little. And look! I even brought a peace-keeping-slash-housewarming gift for your little rowboat!”

You open your mouth to insult his ship identifications, but he’s already tugging something large out of his voluminous pockets - a bottle. A non-alcohol bottle.

“... Is that Tashigi’s shampoo?”

Klaus holds up the bottle like it’s fine wine “I work on the ancient Marine code of ‘finders-keepers’.”

“That’s... I’m pretty sure that’s a pirate code? The Marine code is dibs.”

“Oh.” He considers. “Well, I call dibs on this bottle. Done, it’s mine now!”

You reach up to rub your forehead, feeling like Smoboss. Poor, poor man. “So your idea to have me let you stay is to... bribe me with Tashigi’s shampoo?”

“What? Hell, no!” Klaus frowns, holding up a finger admonishingly. “First up, this is MY shampoo, remember? Secondly, your gift is getting to look at it and imagine the freak-out when Glasses-girl has to deal with using regular shampoo instead. Besides, I’m staying whether you like it or not.”

“.... Okay, valid.” Fuck it, at least there’s an extra person for shifts. And while you hate to admit it, Klaus is... kind of competent? Just in case there IS any trouble. Which there won’t be! Probably.

Klaus clearly didn’t expect that, by the way he pauses at your words, head tilting. “Wow, you’re easily convinced today.” He shoves the bottle back in his pocket, looking slightly put-out at not being able to mess with you further, and drags himself to his feet. “Well, I’ll say goodnight, then - on deck at seven, remember.”

He grins, reaching out to ruffle your hair (and your head with it, HARD) as he manoeuvres around you in the tiny cabin. You manage to resist the urge to squirm, and scowl up at him instead. “Good night, stowaway,” you say, as he saunters outside with his ill-gotten hair-care products. “And good luck with that honor you never had!”

Klaus smiles happily and flips you off as he goes... wherever.

Guuuuuh.

You've sometimes failed in combat, which means you candy predict your opponent's move. Out of combat, no, at least not since the DC dropped substantially. These days, it's preeeeetty much a guarantee that if you try to use it you'll succeed... but not totally definite.

It's reliable to activate, but you can't keep it up for long.

(Can keep Observation Haki active for longer, in combat and out. Better at seeing multiple future attacks from superior opponents. In-game combat bonus remains at +20 when successfully activated. Next improvement at +50 in Obs. skill level.)

Klaus is ready and waiting for you on the deck the next morning. You have no idea where he slept, or if he even slept at all. It’s entirely possible he crept back into your cabin and stared at you, unblinkingly, all night.

You wouldn’t be surprised.

At least he accepts your word on your poor, innocent ribs, and sticks to Observation training. It’s sheer endurance, today, with Klaus forcing you to increase the sheer efficiency to the point where you can ignore extraneous, unimportant crap and focus all your mental power (cue jokes about you having any mental power, yeah, yeah) on what you actually want to sense.

This has the wonderful benefit of nearly doubling the amount of time you can keep your Haki activated until you start getting a headache. It doesn’t do anything for emotional control - losing your calm still causes the Haki to vanish - but the breakthrough seems to please Klaus, especially as it effectively doubles the amount of Observation training you can do at one time.

Preening at his own brilliance as he announces your results acceptable, he then goes on to kick poor Hat’s and Sunglasses’ asses in swordsmanship. You’re actually kind of grateful for your ribs, when you see them curled up and whining on the deck afterwards.

Before you meet up with Vice-Admiral Brain-Damage and Shichibukai Fireplace, there's a few hours to spare. You COULD try and up several of your skills without messing with your injuries - you could talk to Sunglasses or Hat - you could even talk to (ugh) Klaus of the flower-smelling hair.

Instead, you decide to try and shove your Haki into Cut-chan, because you're a weirdo.

... You completely fail at it. Incredibly badly. Like - wow. So bad. You don't know if it's all the training you did this morning, or an inability to keep your cool with the impending presence of the guy who scorched a line through your name, but Observation slips out of your grasp every time you think you've activated it, leaving you staring at Cut-chan, glazed-eyed, for nearly two hours.

"You look reeeeally creepy~" Klaus whispers as he breezes past you with a bottle of rum from your supplies. Still staring at Cut-chan, you raise a certain finger at his back.

It doesn't help.

In any case, trying not to sulk at.your complete lack of success with mentally mapping your cute little Cut-chan, the Skyrazor (as you've decided to name it) reaches Lataro Island, or Barato Island, or whatever the crap it's named. You don't care.

All you know is that Garp's ship is clearly docked there, by the sight of its weird figurehead.

...... If and when Smoboss gets a new ship, you'll need to vet his figurehead. Just in case he goes all nuts and tasteless.

There'll be no silliness here! This is serious business, this is!

Soooo, hypothetically speaking for anyone who might be interested regarding my isekai fantasy parody quest, would a 'video-game'-esque system be better, with levels and such, or a more normal skill system? I could make it work either way.

Also, your ship figurehead would clearly be a sword with a piece of candy impaled on the tip.
>>
>>3566781
why do that when our figure head could be a actual sword so we can ram into other ships
>>
>>3566781
>if reincarnation then video game is fine but otherwise I'd stick to more dnd stats
>>
>>3566781
Game level systems tend to get over run with skills that end up never being used again after the first time. Normal skill system would be better
>>
>>3566790
a solution to that is skill consolidation, but that is a lot of stuff for the QM to keep track off so prob something to avoid
>>
>>3566784
Seasus, you're right. That's clearly the best option.

>>3566790
I was planning a restriction on number of skills based on your level, so you'd have to carefully pick which skills to accept. Which keep you from getting too stupidly overpowered like a certain blond dumbass.

>no figureheads, you can't be trusted

Mmm, yes, your new uniform as dapper. Classy as fuck. You preen a little in the privacy of your cabin, before nobly summoning your minions (by yelling 'Hat! Sunglasses! You're with me!').

"Guard my noble vessel!" You point dramatically at Klaus as he lounges on the deck.

"I'd sell it while you're gone, but I'd only get about ten beri," he says, shrugging. You fix him with your most disgusted glare until he relents. "Fiiiiiine. I'll be a good watchdog, prettyboy."

"Commander Prettyboy," you correct, earning an eye-roll as you head down the gangplank, minions behind you.

Garp's crew welcome you aboard briskly, directing you to the Vice-Admiral's office with polite urgency, and a knock on the door sees you in almost immediately.

Garp sits at his desk - face dark and body tense, from what you can tell, though he grins almost toothily when you appear. "Greenhorn! And other greenhorns!"

Bogart, closing the door behind your entry, gives you a brief nod. "Commander. You won't be here long. If you'll just pass over your camera and report, I'll get those processed while Garp explains matters.

"Right, right..." It feels odd to hand over your camera, but with that and the Skypiea report, Bogart settles down to start... fiddling with things. Transferring the pictures from the camera to a weird little box, it looks like.

As for you and the minions, you take a seat opposite the Vice-Admiral, Hat and Sunglasses standing behind you like actual professionals. Incredible!

"Here, have some tea. It'll help you grow!" You never thought you'd be poured tea by someone so high-ranked, but you keep quiet and accept the cup with a thanks, adding in
>one sugar
>three sugars
>the entire contents of a sugar plantation

I know, I meant 'Why?' as in 'what's the big deal?'. Alas, poor Robin, maybe if she'd told you about the Poneglyph. OH WELL.

Oh, and you've also spared a load of official interest in Skypiea, due to Dials/Lightning Logia Fruit/possible fuckton of gold that the Strawhats couldn't carry, so oops.

>just gimme sugah

Hell yeeeeeeah, it's sugar time. You pour in a good load, then, on second thought, a load more.

Maybe next time you could just ask for a cup of sug- no. No, that's too much. Probably.

Taking a sip of heavenly nectar (not as good as Pink Flamingoes of course, but not bad) you settle in to let Garp explain.

So Fireabs is injured - pretty badly, in fact - and in serious danger of losing an arm. As ironic as it would be to just go around with one created put of fire, that's apparently not a possibility. Disappointing.

All you have to do is escort Fireplace Abs to Trafalgar Law's... submarine (okay)... hang around for a couple of days or so while Abs gets his fucked-up arm split apart (thanks, Devil Fruit weirdness), has a load of shit picked out that would probably kill him if it were tried normally, gets fixed up and then put back together with hopefully minimal damage. Then you hand over the payment - a thin bag that sounds like it's pull of paper - and head back to Garp with a shiny, non-defective Shichibukai.

Sounds easy enough...

Where the hell are we meeting the criminal scum
He's going to give you an Eternal Pose for a shitty speck of unnamed, worthless land that the sub will be docked at. No-one else should be there. No super-secret Marine-pirate deals going on, no sirree!

>Does he know abs is coming along with a marine escort
Yes, but Law's insisting they have to be below Captain rank. How convenient that you're a Commander! And that you have a subordinate who's a Logia!

>>3566885
>is not law a pirate?
Yeah.

>>3566886
>How dangerous is Traffy?
Very, but he's smart enough not to murder a Shichibukai and a bunch of Marines for shits and giggles, especially when it'll piss off Garp the Fist. He wouldn't live long after. The basics of his Devil Fruit are known, and he's proficient with a big-ass sword. He's also currently got a 85,000,000 bounty.

>>3566887
>>3566889
>general pirate fuckery
Again, he's not an idiot. If he DOES try something, use your best judgement in a proportionate response. Garp doesn't second Smoker that Ace can die, but he's fine with writing off Trafalgar (preferably AFTER Ace is healed). Everything should go fine, but if you need to take some of the pirates hostage or just straight-up kill everyone, do it. It's better if Abs loses an arm than all of you die.

>>3566905
>Do we get any painkillers/medication for Abs?
Yes, he can take those himself.
>Is Abs allergic to something?
Not jobbing.
>Payment after full treatment?
Yes. If Trafalgar demands evidence of the payment, you can open the bag and give him one random page, the rest are only after you've confirmed the surgery is complete. Be careful to always keep the bag close so he doesn't use his Devil Fruit to take the pages out without you knowing.

Anything else?

With your questions answered, the next step is to not get fatally murdered to death by Fireplace. Hopefully he'll be happily hopped up on drugs and less than inclined to melt your face off, but who knows? Life sure is an adventure!

Finishing your tea, you give Garp your thanks and a quick salute, deciding to hold off on showing your cannon-ball projectile skills. Despite his smile, the tired eyes and tenseness of his body suggest he isn't in the mood for it.

The Skyrazor has apparently been resupplied (with a little extra thanks to your unexpected stowaway), and your minions are only too delighted to not have been put in charge of doing that themselves, although they're less thrilled now they know exactly what this mission entails.

"No-one said we were going to meet up with the Surgeon of Death," Sunlasses whines, like a whiner.

"It's a secret mission, it's not like there was going to be an announcement," you point out, trotting back to your ship. "Need-to-know and all that!"

Hat nods reluctantly, also looking like you just drank his grog ration in front of him. "That's the bad thing about being a Marine, aniki... getting orders that no-one explains."

You decide not to admit you were the one who volunteered them for this mission. "Mm, yes, absolutely. Of course. Damn those orders.

>Of course, if you became officers yourselves, you'd get more say in these things..." (push Hat and Sunglasses towards OFFICERDOM)
>Even I barely know what I'm doing half the time! Okay, ninety percent of the time. Mostly I just guess." (Keep them on infantry route)

"- Of course, if you became officers yourselves, you'd get more say in these things..."

Hat and Sunglasses seem to perk up a little at that, heads turning to glance at each other. "Yeah...? You think we could both do it, aniki?"

You shrug. "I don't see why not. I mean, Hat, you were gonna be promoted anyway because of the Logia thing, the brass should be preeeetty eager to bump you up a coupl'a ranks. And Sunglasses... eh, just study the theory. You're there in the physical stuff." It's true. You're pretty sure they could just about make Ensign for their sword skills, partly thanks to Klaus making them his targe- students.

They look a little flattered by your words. Has anyone actually told them this sort of thing, you wonder? You know Klaus and Smoboss aren't exactly fulsome with the praise, and they DO tend to get their asses kicked in the spare with you/Tashigi/Klaus, but - they're really not awful. You haven't seen them in a real fight since Hat ate his Logia, but they'd kick ass thoroughly in East Blue at least.

For now, though, the three of you tromp up the gangplank towards your potential fiery doom.

You probably won't die. Maybe. Hopefully.

The deck's clear - you eye the door to inside with the tired feelings of a man who now has to deal with a) Klaus and b) a Shichibukai with a grudge. Yippee.

You take a deep breath as Hat and Sunglasses eye you sympathetically. You are brave. You are bold. You are badass.

Ugggggghhhhh you don't wanna doooooo thiiiiiiisssddsss.....

BUT YOU MUST.

"If the ship catches on fire, just run for it," you tell the two, adjusting your (totally sweet) new coat. At least you're going to burn stylishly.

"Good luck, aniki!"

"It was nice knowing you!"

... Thanks.

Giving them the a grateful salute (with one finger) for their encouragement, you shove the door open and descend into the bowels of the Skyrazor, where lurketh a pirate. A Government-affiliated pirate, but still.

"I've retuuuuuuurned~" you yell, in lieu of actually using Observation to find anyone.

Luckily, Klaus doesn't bother with things like 'keeping his mouth shut'. "In the galley, prettyboy!"

... Of course. Whee else would they be?

He sounded pretty casual, so you don't hurry as you enter the room, taking in the lovely view. Klaus lounging back at the table, booted feet kicked up on the table - NOT hygienic - and smiling sweetly at Portgas D. Vengeful Fire Demon Ace, who's death-glaring at him from the opposite side, one arm bound tight against him in a sling.

At least HE doesn't have his damn legs up, although that's probably because he'd jog his arm. But still. At least he's too focused on trying to kill Klaus with his brain to look at you.

>Gosh, it's so nice to see everyone getting along! I'm sure we'll all be best friends and no-one will kill anyone else!

Your gaze flicks suspiciously between the two, who only have eyes for each other - Abs' glaring, Klaus' wide and innocent.

"... Is this a dominance-establishing thing? Neither of you have tried to mark your territory, right?" You wouldn't put it past them.

Abs gives a slight start of surprise, turning slightly to look at you - and then back to a scowl, even more ferocious than before, mouth tightening. "You?!"

"That's 'Commander You?!', Cinders." Klaus keeps his lazy gaze fixed, exuding an aura of smugness beyond the power of most nobles. "He got a nice jump in rank for your capture, y'know?"

"I'm gonna take a wild guess that Garp didn't say it was gonna be me, huh?" You smile politely, in a hopefully non-antagonistic way. "In the name of-"

There's a scraping clunk as Klaus draaaags his boots off the table and onto the floor, looking worryingly cheerful. "Looks like it's a fun surprise for everyone, huh? Say, how about we have a little chat in private, hm?" He steps over, still smiling, wrapping a hand around your arm and tugging you towards the door. "Don't mind us, Cinders!"

"Believe me, I won't," Fireplace snarks, looking like an embittered (and shirtless) teenager rather than a supposedly badass twenty-something.

"Whaaaaat?" You try to shake off Klaus' grip, confused and annoyed, as he pulls you out into the corridor, shoving the door shut behind him.

"Cinders already told me what this little gig is about," Klaus breezily explains, looking a lot less happy about it than his casual tone implies. "And Garp's really sending you to negotiate this shit with the Surgeon of Death? You realize this is nowhere aboveboard, right?"

>garp abuses his authority, news at ten

You shrug, a little awkwardly. It's not like you can say 'SURPRISE, Abs is his grandkid!'. Well, you could. You just might not live long. "Garp has... personal reasons. I dunno if the rest of HQ even knows about this."

Klaus' eyes narrow. "You know something?"

You paste the dumbest expression possible across your mug. "Hm? What? I wasn't listening, I was too busy fantasizing about stupid things. Like how to get a cannonball through my head."

"... Point taken." He sighs, still not looking happy. "You realize if the brass really don't know about this-- screw it. If I'D known about this, I'd have told Smo-kun he was an idiot before I stowed away."

"You could also have NOT stowed away."

"Nah, you obviously need me around." Klaus looks you up and down with clear judgement. "You need all the help you can get."

... Rude. In any case, it's not like you can turn around now. "I don't really think it's gonna be a big deal. I mean, even if they find out and don't approve, they're not gonna punish the Hero of the Marines, are they?"

"No, that's why people like you and me become scapegoats," Klaus points out, eye-rolling pointedly. "Look - I know you respect Smo-kun, prettyboy, and most of the time he's intelligent, but he's still too arrogant. He can't protect you from everything, he doesn't play politics enough, and if you aren't careful, a year from now, you're going to find yourself in the middle of some clusterfuck and every officer nearby is going to dump the blame on you. And by that point, Garp or Smo-kun might not have the pull to help you."

>That's ridiculous. Garp's the Hero, and Smoboss is on the rise, they'll be fine.

"... So what should I do, Mr Expert?"

"Stop being so naive," he answers bluntly. "But I guess that's a long-term goal. For now... what are YOU getting out of this?"

Uh. "Nothing?" That's not a good answer, is it?

Klaus' eyes close, face pained. "Yeah. Thought so. Kid, if you're going to risk punishment down the line, at least make sure you're going to be owed a favor first. Preferably a defined one. With Garp, it's not too bad, but..." He pauses, eyeing you again, a little awkwardly. "Did Smo-kun tell you to do this?"

You nod, unsure as to why that's a problem.

"Right. See - how can I put this? Smo-kun doesn't see you as... I don't know, a pawn, or anything. But he's used to ordering people around, thinking he knows best, and doing whatever he wants, and he actually - Seasus forbid - trusts Garp. But what's best for Garp and Smo-kun isn't necessarily what's best for you, kid."

"It's not like he'd order me to do something if it'd come back to bite me," you argue, bristling slightly.

"Not willingly, no, but he's the type of guy to chase a nobody onto the Grand Line out of sheer pride. He's smart enough to be an idiot in new and exciting ways instead of simple, easily-solved ones." Klaus just looks annoyed now, crossing his arms. "Garp is too valuable to throw away lightly, but Commodore Cancer is mostly valuable because of his Devil Fruit, and the Moku Moku no Mi has a known fruit."

The hell does that mean?

"As for you... even if they know about your advantages, you're not indispensable. They could even just transfer you under someone else." It's almost... like Klaus is actually worried about you. Incredible. "You need to think about the orders you get instead of blindly accepting them, prettyboy, and don't just assume Smo-kun is right about everything, or that he'll always be there to protect you. He's got less pull than you'd think."

You sigh, looking down at the floorboards. "If they try to screw me, I've got a couple bombs I can drop. Garp knows he can't screw me over without consequences to himself, and as much of an idiot as he is, he ain't stupid."

Klaus scoffs. "Garp's not that much of a problem. He's one of the decent ones, even if it's painful to admit it. Just don't go around thinking that he's one hundred percent nice. He can weigh up people's values and make sacrifices like the rest of 'em. Especially if he knows about your blackmail and thinks you're gonna screw him."

You glance at the galley door. Would Garp do something if he thought you were going to spill about Abs and Strawbrat? Yeah, probably. One fresh Commander was nothing to two grandkids.

"Beside," Klaus continues, "I'm guessing your blackmail is something related to this gig right? So if the brass finds out about this and asks him why he did it, he's not going to dig himself deeper by telling his real reasons, is he? In fact, he just has incentive to shut you the hell up. And even if Garp himself is decent enough not to try anything, not everyone is gonna be. Don't pull secret stuff if it's not worthwhile, and don't just assume someone can or will protect you. Got it?"

"I kind of feel like everyone's trying to stab me in the worldview lately," you mutter, slumping. The Strawhats, Tashigi, Fop, now this - it's not like you didn't already know the brass was... as it is, but shouldn't there be an option to just ignore all that political crap and get on with your job? Or avoiding doing your job, with certain people.

Ugh.

Complications suck.

Klaus raises an eyebrow, looking mildly concerned. "What's the problem, prettyboy? Beyond your pathetic lack of height, I mean."

You stare up at your sort-of-actually-is mentor. He stares back down at you. Then he gives a strangled groan, reaching up to palm his forehead. "Oh. Great. It's time for one of THOSE discussions."

Huh? "Huh?"

Klaus reaches out, resting a hand almost gently on your shoulder. You eye it warily, waiting for the trap. "Congratulations. You've reached the stage of every non-total-idiot officer's life where they start to realize what they've really signed up for, and have to figure out if it's worth it, or how to deal with it. And you've managed to throw a personality crisis into the mix at the same time, which is... impressive."

This doesn't feel like a compliment. You scowl. "Do you actually have any advice?"

"Well, normally I'd start by getting both of us drunk, but I guess that's not really an option right now." He sighs, casting a quick look back at the galley, before rapping on the door. "Hey, Cinders, we need to go deal with shit, don't burn anything down in the meantime!"

"You'll be my first target," Fireplace's muffled voice promises, before Klaus' grip tightens on your shoulder, and he tugs you towards... your cabin. Where the hell HAS he been sleeping, anyway?

"Welcome to your humble abode, make yourself at home," he tells you, steering you into the cabin, while you pointedly roll your eyes. "Now - okay. Crap. Do you want to deal with the moral problem or your finally-developing-puberty issue first?"

You flip him off.

"Right, right." Klaus shoves you - gently, surprisingly enough - back to sit on your bed, while he slouches down in the chair. "Okay. Look, I'm gonna cut it down to its absolute basics here, no avoiding any issues - the Government, including the Marines, pulls a lot of bad shit. And I'm not talking about corruption, or anything they'd actually get punished for; I'm talking about all the underhanded realpolitik shit they do for the 'greater good'." He pulls a face. You frown, trying to drag it back to your point. "But how many pirates out there are just... not all that awful? And I'm still meant to kill them, or - I mean, the stories about Impel Down aren't really true, right?"

"They're pretty much all true," Klaus says, utterly blunt, and you only fail to recoil because of the sheer disbelief. "It's kinder to kill them, if they're gonna be sent to Impel Down, otherwise."

You swallow. "Oh." And then, "Wait, so - so why? What's the point of- of just torturing them like that?"

Klaus snorts, shrugging. "Beats the fuck outta me, prettyboy. I'd say incentivizing others to not commit piracy, but that's obviously pointless. I'm guessing either some sadist or some really self-righteous asshole set it all up, and now it just keeps going because 'that's how we've always done it'."

"But that's... stupid?"

"Welcome to the Marines!"

You try to figure out how absolutely any of this makes sense, and thoroughly fail. "The Strawhats - I mean, if we arrest them... they're just gonna be tortured. For the rest of their lives."

Klaus nods, looking at you. He's looked a lot better lately than your early impressions of him, you realize. Maybe the result of a proper hammock. Brighter eyes, smugger smile, straighter back. Right now though, he just looks tired.

"So... If I beat a Strawhat, I have a choice between killing them or sending them to be tortured. Just for sadism. No other option."

"Flashman," Klaus says, voice tense, "This is what you've signed up for. The second they willingly sailed under a jolly roger, they accepted the possibility of pain and death. If you've got a problem with that, there's three options."

You allow a tentative hope to rise. "Yeah?"

"The first is to quit the Marines." ... Hm. "The second to kill every prisoner you take, to spare them Impel Down."

You wince. The thought of killing Doctor Cutie, or Sanji, or - okay, torturing the Witch is fine - it doesn't feel great. "And the third...?"

(1/2)
>>
"You let the ones who don't deserve it go," Klaus says. "And you accept the fact that you're probably going to get caught doing it one day, and then you'll either go to Impel Down yourself, or on the run."

"...... Those aren't great options."

"Yeah, life is shit, and the Marines aren't really set up for moralists." Klaus shrugs. "I can't even say 'get to a high rank and change shit', because you'll still have to deal with this while you get there. It's just... Look, Smo-kun's a Marine, even if the top guys hate him. He'd probably tell you all the bad shit he's seen even the most 'decent' pirates do. But speaking as a guy who doesn't give a shit about loyalty to any institutions any more, you're gonna have to decide for yourself where you draw the line." He reaches for his flask, apparently thinks better of it, and pulls his hand away. "It's a hundred percent certain that if you stay a Marine, you're gonna have to do shit you'll think is wrong."

Your nails dig into the bedcovers. "Really? A hundred percent?"

"Unless you get a quiet, cushy post like guarding Loguetown, yeah. But you're in the Grand Line, you're an officer, a - all the things you are - and you're chasing down the Strawhats. People you think are decent. Yeah, there's gonna come a point where you'll either need to kill or capture one, or let them go, and that's a big, defining choice."

>What if I arrest one because I think they'll just escape later, anyway?
>... I don't think I could kill someone I didn't think was a bad person.
