/qst/ - Quests

You are Ikeda Mitsumasa, Mitsu for friends. Your incredible luck with the spear has earned you the title Yari Oni, Demon Spear, though some still call you the Oni Horosho, demon vagrant.

A few months passed since Harada successfully took over the hometown of the Akitas. It was now fall, leaves fell from the trees and harvest was in full motion. You were part of the reconstruction effort of the capital of the former Akita Clan, now seat of the Harada Clan. Your job was to listen to the complaint of the locals, send compensation to the families of the fallen, direct the reconstruction of certain areas, and a whole bunch more things, all as boring as the last, but a hectic list of tasks nonetheless.

You were sitting about atop a hill on one of your resting days, lazily holding on to your yari, with your trusty katana at your side. The sun was setting behind Harada Castle. You decided to think about all that’s happened in the past few months, in case someone from another dimension were to be listening in to your thoughts.

Harada sat as head of the Harada Clan in the capital. Casualties during the siege were rather high, around two hundred on Harada’s side and a complete wipeout on the side of the Akitas. After hearing that the castle fell and that lady Oya was most likely dead, the reinforcements returned to their homes and plotted away their summers. Some joined with Harada, some sought protection of other clans.

Harada had finally begun to teach you the way of the Yari. He was a ruthless teacher, but it helped you learn a few tricks with the thing, like how to properly use it outside of the stabbing with the pointy end strategy.

[Yari skill: 40/100]

Lady Oya, meanwhile, had lived. She and her son were imprisoned in a mansion within the castle grounds. You’d seen her a few times since, and her eyes bit you like an infuriated serpent. A scary woman, even when missing an arm. The proper heir of the Akitas would be raised as a retainer of Harada Clan, at least that’s what Harada ordered.

And that was the extent of the summer. Harada’s insanity had receded, and some of the ashigaru who were with you, including the old man, had been raised to retainer status. This whole thing felt more like an army of Ashigaru overthrowing some Samurai in order to become the new Samurai.

Harada had convened to meet with you later in the week, after the month’s council was over. Said it was time for you to be reassigned somewhere else. There were grounds to believe that Harada would give you some good status, considering the whole Yari Oni thing, but you had no knowledge of the details.

Anyhow, you still had some spare time before the reunion, maybe you should…

>Go meet that old one-eyed ashigaru who became a retainer of Harada’s.
>See if you can meet Lady Oya, try to learn more about what happened to lord Akita.
>Help out with the reconstruction directly. Folks should like you more.

Nah, we're still Ikeda.

----

There’s been something gnawing at the back of your mind for a while. How did lord Akita, one of the best horse archers in this side of the country, die in by falling off his horse during a hunt?

Considering that most of the retainers who did know lord Akita are dead, the only potential source of information is Lady Oya. She was his wife and mother of his son after all. The two of you aren’t exactly the best of friends, considering you cut her arm off, but if she knows that you’re there to speak about lord Akita’s accident, she might be more open to talking with you.

The woman is being held in a mansion close by the castle, the guards there hail you but don’t bother stopping you at all. It has been a relatively boring summer and you are one of Harada’s most famous retainers. All luck, when you think about it. Show off a little bit with a yari in front of young and gullible ashigarus and you suddenly have a nickname and everyone thinks you’re a god in the battlefield. Best not let it get to your head. You remember what your father told you; show-offs die first.

The servants of lady Oya escort you towards her room and announce your presence. There is a momentary silence, a bit uncomfortable, as you wait for her door to open. Eventually, it does, you catch a glimpse of Akita’s son behind the door being held by the servants as he tries to reach out to his mother.

Lady Oya stands defiant, you notice that the sleeve for her right arm hangs limp right where the elbow and lower arm should be. Her face does not hide the hate she feels towards you.

“I only see you because you dare speak of my late husband. What is it you wish to know?”

“How did lord Akita die?”

“He fell off a horse. I was told the same as you.”

Huh.

“How does the best horse archer in this side of the country die from a horse fall?”

Oya spits on the ground. “What are you trying to imply?”

Tea ceremony roll.

---

[Personality: 2xHonorbound, 1xDutiful, 1xAmbitious.]

“How dare you speak of him like that? You spearheaded a part of a traitor’s assault to your ‘lord’s’ castle.” Lady Oya says with venom in her tone.
“I am sworn to Lord Harada due to a debt. But I respected lord Akita.” You don’t really believe yourself on that one, it’s not like he treated you well, though it wasn’t something you’d expect of him. Still, treachery is treachery, and you won’t have a traitor roaming about the land.

“Hmph.” Lady Oya’s hateful stare seems to turn sterner. “Enter my mansion, I will have my servants serve you tea.”

You bow and accept her invitation.

The living room of this mansion is rather large, considering only Lady Oya and her child actually live here for the most part. It seems this mansion used to be a summer dwelling for the Akitas during peace, so they could’ve held meetings here. Akita’s kid is nowhere to be seen, only Lady Oya sits in front of you, while servants bring in tea and proceed through an elaborate ceremony to pour it in-front of you. It’s the first tea ceremony you’ve ever seen, and you’re really wondering why anyone would bother to do things with so much pomp. Aren’t there better things to waste your time on?

Still, you stand as perfectly still as you can as the ceremony proceeds, and by the time the tea is served. Lady Oya is looking at you somewhat impressed.

“Was this your first tea ceremony?”

“Yes.” You respond.

“It’s rare to see someone that sits in the right position and is able to keep it so well throughout. I thought of you as a barbarian, but there might be more mettle to you than first glances may offer.”

You want to scratch your head, wondering what the hell she’s talking about. But you simply bow. “Thank you, my lady.”

“So. A man of honor in Harada’s cohorts of low-lives. Yes, it’s as you said. Something is not right with the accident that killed my husband.” Her tone is serious and calm. But you can tell she’s uncomfortable speaking of her late husband.

“What are your thoughts, my lady?”

“The best horse archer in the lands of Akita and beyond falls off his horse during a hunt. I was told a boar spooked his horse and my husband could do nothing to help himself. I refuse to believe that, my husband had taken his best horse. It was the most valiant in the lands.” Oya sips on her tea as she speaks.

“It pains me to put it this way, my Lady. But have you not seen his body?”

“No. The retainers refused to let me see it. ‘It is too terrible for a woman to see.’ They said. I insisted, but they said again that lord Akita’s head had twisted in a horrible way.”

“Who were these retainers?”

“Akaboshi Nagatomo, a man from the coast, led them. One of the youngest in my late husband’s bodyguard and also a fine cavalryman.”

“Do you trust him?”

“I do not have the pleasure of knowing much about him. Though from what I’ve seen, he’s akin to a spider. At least Harada is a snake, and will proudly show his head as he injects his poison into all your hold dear. Akaboshi is more of a spider, he will trap you in his net first, then deal the killing blow.”

“You think Akaboshi killed lord Akita?”

“No.” Lady Oya looks down somberly, her hand clenching strongly into her cup. “But I am sure he had part in it.”

She now looks at you before continuing. “If you have any love for your former lord, you will look into this for me. I command you, as his late wife and regent of his only son.”

>”I will, on my honor.” [Honorbound]

I have a bad feeling Harada had something to do with this. His mental state was terrible at the time. And he fucking perked up awfully quick once Akita was dead. Maybe he was faking the madness.

“That’s… Good to hear.” Lady Oya says. “It was good to meet a friendly face in a sea of ambition and devilry.” Her tone seems to relax ever so slightly. “There is yet time for you to look into this, so take your time and wait for opportunities. That is my advice. Now leave, I do not wish for this reunion to extend for too long and have the guards at the entrance gossiping.”

You nod and bow to Lady Oya before getting up and leaving the room. An old servant accompanies you towards the entrance, she speaks: “Thank you for visiting Lady Oya, good sir. I believe she’s been very lonely after all that’s happened.”

You were like this old woman before. Just a lowly person that doesn’t understand the schemes and plots of politics. It’s not like you’re a master now, it has been around six months after all, but you’re starting to see things as you spend more and more time around these noblemen and samurai.

[Insight: 20/100]

The week went by uneventfully. All you did was look a little more into who this Akaboshi guy was, asking only those you trusted. Apparently, he was lord of a small town that thrives off trade and fishing in the coasts of the old Akita lands, he had joined the army that was heading out to reinforce the castle, but fled back home when it disbanded and swore allegiance to Harada after hearing of the defeat of the Akitas.

It was time to meet Harada. You entered Harada castle accompanied by some of his retainers. You were wearing your old samurai armor that he had gifted, even if it was missing most of its parts, along with the Katana that lord Akita had given to Harada, who Harada then offered to you.

Harada was in the courtyard, clad in armor and training himself. He stopped as you arrived, dropped his yari and offered you a hug, which you promptly accepted, even if a little uncomfortable. These months had seen Harada become more eccentric, rather than insane and brooding.

“It’s good to see you, Spear Demon. As you can see, I’m trying to adapt my fighting style to the eye I’m missing. It’s tough, but I’m starting to see results.”

“It’s good to see you too, lord Harada.” You respond.

He throws an arm around your shoulders. “Would you like to have a practice bout with me? I’m missing an eye, and you’ve been training under the best spearman this land has to offer: Me. Who knows, maybe you could win.”

>”Sorry, my lord. But I’m not feeling well today.” [Cautious]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLd68KzkhMA We fight against Harada.

Harada nods, obviously pleased. He heads off and picks up a staff to his liking, then takes a wooden katana and throws it over to you. You pick it up and examine it, it’s well crafted, most likely from a local dojo, perfectly fitting to the shape of a regular katana.

The two of you stand a few meters away from one another. Harada puts himself in a stance and yells “Osu!”. You put yourself in a stance as well, and fixate your eyes, well and wide open, on Harada.

He smiles. “Are you waiting for me to dance around like the pretty girl? Not a chance!” He deftly charges towards you, spear in front, as he arrives, he thrusts forward. You dodge and put your katana to his staff and slide it forward, he jumps back before being hit and reengages his stance.

“You dodge my staff, so what? You have to pin it down and unarm me, little Mitsu.” He says, taunting you.

As he finishes speaking, you charge forward. He thrusts towards you again and you dodge, you try to get close to him but another swift thrust stops you dead on your tracks. All you can do is eye him up.

“Oni Horosho. The Demon Vagrant.” Harada says with a smirk. His spear flies to the side, and a sweep comes back. You dodge back, but before you can recover he thrusts again, a thrust that you dodge to the side, you slice with your wooden katana, but barely miss. A miscalculation, he was farther away than you thought. You take a step back.
One of the retainers present interjects. “My lord, this was a full bout. It’s a draw.”

Harada looks at him for a second, then back to you. “Would you have a proper duel with me, Mitsu? First to five hits.”

This man is insane. Even with a single eye, he moves around swiftly like the wind. His spear looks like an extension of his bloody limbs. If he had two eyes, you wouldn't have gotten him to a draw, he would've pounced on you with one thrust and left you breathless.

[Personality: 4xHonorbound, 1xDutiful, 2xAmbitious.]

Harada drops his fighting pose and throws his spear back towards its storage. “Well, you’re right.” He shrugs. “I did call you for something important anyhow. Go to the council room, I’ll meet you there when I’ve gotten out of my armor.”

You nod and bow, Harada bows back, the sign of a duel that ended and the respect that both contenders have for each other.

Harada heads off to a cabin within the courtyard, accompanied by a few servants, though he shoos them away, insisting that he can take off his own armor. You are escorted into the castle. There wasn’t much fighting within these walls, and everything seemed perfect and sparkly. Some lords from other clans came by to pay their respects to Harada last you heard, and it’s likely that Harada wanted to impress them. At the council room, you are stripped off of your armor and given a proper silk kimono to wear, Harada entered the room after you, already wearing his own and the traditional hairstyle for samurai. He looked the part, more so with that black eyepatch he had.

He sat at the end of the council room and you sat to his right, both of you looking to the front. Proper etiquette for the samurai.

“Ikeda Mitsumasa, my faithful retainer. I hope your summer went well.”

You nod.

“My summer has gone well, my lord.”

He nods. His demeanor was serious and lord-like. A complete change from the foolhardy man you saw a little while ago.

“Ikeda, you are quite young and only have the capabilities of a warrior. You are known as the Yari Oni, though your skill with the Yari is limited as of now. Yet you’ve garnered a name for yourself while under my command in the march to Akita and many look at you eagerly, seeing themselves in the young man who was so quickly able to rise to power.”

You bow. “Thank you, lord Harada.”

Harada nods. “But, as you know, our power is feeble and lacking any sort of base. We can’t behave with too much ambition, lest our neighbors come and destroy us for our impertinence.”

You didn’t know that for sure, but you nod nonetheless. A good way to confirm it. “What would my lord have of me?”
“Now that peace has returned to the old Gamo and Akita lands, I will ensure that our neighbors keep their dogs of war on a tight leash. Sadly, this requires knowledge of diplomacy and etiquette, which you lack as of now.”

You bow again. He is right, you were a dumpy ashigaru not even a year ago.

Harada nods as you answer. “I see, it is good that you show interest in governorship. I am sure this town will welcome you, many of the ashigarus from the Gamo lands came from there and spread information about you.”
“My lord, could I ask about lord Akaboshi from the coast? I’ve heard he was one of the rebellious lords who would have marched against us.”

Harada didn’t flinch at the question at all. “I know him, he surrendered and headed back to his town after Lady Oya’s defeat. What about him?”

“I’ve heard tales that he is not well trusted.”

“The man’s fond of intrigue.” Harada replies. “I don’t like types like him, if you’re going to stab my back, do it yourself.” Harada’s serious façade crumbles a bit as he speaks about him. “Honestly, folks like him are the reason I hate pure-blooded samurai.”

You nod. “Thank you, my lord, excuse me for the impertinent question.”

“It’s fine.” He replies. He suddenly adopts a more relaxed position. “The meeting’s over anyhow. I don’t enjoy having to look like a lord, but this was good training. Who taught you to be so well behaved?”

You decide to relax as well. “No one, really. I just imagine it’s how samurai do, look stern and serious all the time.”

Harada smiles. “You’re right about that. What do you want from this Akaboshi guy?”

“I’ve heard his town prospers. It might help out with my town’s management.”

“It won’t. He’s stingy with money. Though he is a horse archer, his father bred him to be a bodyguard of Akita’s.” Harada laughs. “Bastards never left an enemy soldier even come close, but they did let in a boar.” The laughter stops, Harada looks at you. “Odd. Don’t you think?”

“I don’t know how to answer that, my lord.”

“It’s best if you don’t.” Harada replies. “Anyhow, get your gear back and speak with my retainers here, they’ll tell you what’s next. Good luck on your two month trip.”

You nod and bow, he bows back. You head out of the council room while Harada sits there, musing about some issue or another.

Yeah, I liked exploring his personality. If only everyone shared my mind and chose the better personality options.

I'm personally against civs, but many do like them. Just don't overdo it.

Thanks for running, I'm glad it's not ded.

I liked both threads.
Yeah, as long as it affects choices down the line and how others perceive us.
Sounds fun. Have a good vacation.

I enjoyed the Ikeda session.
I think we have a clearer picture of what he's like tbqh. He's a guy who basically is trying to emulate the stories about Samurai so that he can fulfill his position. Wants to advance, but not dishonorably. He also not a cutthroat. In shorter terms he's an average dude with above average skills who got lucky and is doing his best.
>>
>>3427326
>>Did you like this thread or the first one more?
Both were fine. I can't say I didn't enjoy the rush of battle more, though.
>>Did you like this Ikeda-building session? (Yeah, I wanted to build up his personality more by prompting lots of conversations)
Sure.
>>I was thinking of doing a simple management sim for the next session in-between whatever plotting you guys had in mind, would you like that?
Why not? It would be interesting.
>>
>>3427326
This is my first thread on this quest, so eh.

Ikeda is a bit.....odd, but fine.

Simple as in "here is problem, give solution" or simple as in "here are stats, try and keep both/all three high."

Your style of writing is really good, your language and the fluidity of your writing is perfect for storytelling.
I liked the fighting scenes in the first one and the politics in this one. I look forward to what you have in store for us next. I would like longer sessions though (that's just because I have no life)
>>
>>3427335
>First thread had more fighting.
Yeah, there were two wars in it. There might be more in the future.
>Yeah, I liked exploring his personality. If only everyone shared my mind and chose the better personality options.
Don't we all wish we were a hivemind.
>I'm personally against civs, but many do like them. Just don't overdo it.
I have experience running civs, my plan is not to do a civ per se, but try to mix it in with the regular questing.

>>3427336

It will, so long as there are people there to see it and spread your reputation.

Good to hear and thanks.

I see what you mean, and I somewhat share the sentiment.

Hopefully the unstable political climate will lead to more battling.

>>3427352

Yeah, conflicting player interests will always lead to somewhat odd characters. From brazen yari oni to honorable guy.

>Simple as in "here is problem, give solution" or simple as in "here are stats, try and keep both/all three high."
A mix of both.

>>3427367
>I like both threads, will probably be rereading both.
Thanks.

Woah, that's some high praise. I'm very thankful for that.

>I liked the fighting scenes in the first one and the politics in this one. I look forward to what you have in store for us next. I would like longer sessions though (that's just because I have no life)
Lol, don't worry about it. We're all gonna make it. As for what I have in store: I want to keep the quest interesting. Samurai were supposed to be knowledgeable in all walks of life, from town management, to political intrigue to the bushido. I'd like to use that to make this quest varied and interesting in the gameplay department.

>>3427326
Lurker here, I very much enjoy the content of this quest. The writing and action are fairly good and keep me entertained even after reading through it multiple times.
As for Ikeda's Personality, I feel like he has a slight split between on the battlefield and in off-time. In battle he (usually) keeps about his wits and knows when the enemy is making a ploy or being stupid/a show-off (for instance: striking Oyu while she was showing off her skill) most likely due to his dad telling him tips. In off-time he's instinctively slightly courteous but still knows when there's a stink (For instance: noticing a Samurai almost stabbing him while he was getting help).
Overall, Ikeda is an individual who's dutiful and has some honour to him, and has ambitions of climbing the social status through mostly morally sound ways.
TL;DR: Yari Oni in the Battle-field, Gentleman in the Palace. But what is he in the sheets?
But this is only the first session of the second thread so there will be much more time to flesh out his personality.
>>
>>3427613
>But what is he in the sheets?
Love is another battlefield
>>
>>3427374
Just read both threads, I was pumped for the action but this peace time character building is pretty neato

Ikeda strikes me as the type of guy who's mimicking the sharks after he got dumped in the ocean, but I'm sure that sooner or later a more definitive personality will show up
>>
>>3427796
Indeed. Ikeda is running on stories of what the ideal Samurai is. Whether cold reality changes him for better or worse remains to be seen.

It takes but a few days for you to be ready to march out towards the town of Machi in Gamo lands. You’ve gathered as much information as you could about it. Apparently, it didn’t have much time to recover after the war, only being able to manage the harvest for that year, which was somewhat meager. Its population is around a thousand, and its people are eager to see the Yari Oni as their governor.

Due to that, you decided to head there with your usual armor and the finely crafted yari you stole from that one ashigaru half a year ago. It was still looking pretty good, even after the battle of Akita Castle. Your half samurai armor, even if old, gave you that rugged look of a man that was close to the common people. If only they knew that it was because you couldn’t really afford better, the stipend of a retainer is relatively low, you are fed and given shelter for free after all. Still, you had to look the part, you were given a horse for the march.

As you prepared for the final departure, you were surprised to see a familiar face: The old ashigaru, now retainer, who was missing his eye. He is to accompany you as a bodyguard, he’s got a katana to his side and is wearing his ashigaru armor.

During the march, the man approaches you and hails you.

“Already a town governor, lord Ikeda?”

“I know your face, but not your name. Wouldn’t you at least give me the pleasure?”

“Ah. Excuse me.” The old man scratches his head as he shows an innocent smile. “I am Hara Sakubei, but you can call me Sakubei. Lord Harada has assigned me to be your bodyguard, since I was in your unit back in the siege.”

The old man continues. “Honestly, we were quite the lucky ones, don’t you think? Had it not been for lord Harada’s quick decision-making, we’d still be some nobodies living in Gamo lands.” He looks at the clear blue sky as he continues. “A retainer at my ripe old age of 35, honestly, I thought I’d die as an ashigaru, and I owe it all to lord Harada. It’s surprising to think that he used to be an ashigaru but a few years ago.”

“You’ve still got some years in you, Hara.” You respond.

“Call me Sakubei, please. I am your humble bodyguard after all.” He says. “But yes, you could stay I still got some years, yet I’ve lived more years than I’ve got left to live.”

>”Lord Harada is more than our lord, he is one of our kin.” [Caring]
>”As we owe it all to Lord Harada, we also owe him our life.” [Dutiful]

“I guess you’re right. But what’s a life worth nowadays? I’ve seen men younger than die in droves throughout the land, and it feels like this is just the beginning.”

“What do you mean?”

“I’m not implying that the Harada clans will go to war soon. But ever since the Onin war, the lords have become more and more ambitious. They don’t care about Shogun or Emperor, only about them and their holdings. They’re expanding.”
“You seem to know an awful lot, Sakubei.”

“These are things you learn as you go around serving retainers throughout the land. Where have you served, lord Ikeda?”

“Mostly here, in the east.”

“Then you’ve not seen how things are in the center. Have you heard of Gekokujo?”

Gekokujo, you’ve never heard the word properly defined. Sometimes it was mentioned in Harada’s court, but outside of that… “No, I’ve not.”

“It means ‘the low overcomes the high’. There is no more respect for traditional positions, only strength commands the land. To put it bluntly: Political intrigue is at an all-time high, and people who covet positions will find no resistance from the Bakufu.”

You wonder as you go along. The Bakufu, the central government. Big wigs who probably never got out of Kyoto, and now they’re paying the price for their laziness.

Sakubei continues. “All I’m saying, my lord, is that you grow strong as well. It is needed nowadays. Only the truly prepared will survive the next few decades.”

You nod. “Thank you Sakubei, you are wise.”

“If I weren’t, I’d be dead.” He responds. “I am wise enough to serve the upstart who somehow got into power with barely 18 years on his belt.”

A smile shows in your face, a smile of pride, certainly. You’d wish your father were here to see you. Sakubei continues walking along you and you exchange more pleasantries with him.

You reach the town of Machi after a few days. Around a thousand people live there, and you can tell their conditions are rather squalid. You’re supposed to fix up the place during the following 8 months. 4 of autumn and 4 of winter.

The administrators who accompanied you say that it is a good learning experience to come govern in trying times. They ask you what area of the town’s economy you’d like to focus on during the winter.

You spend the better part of winter thinking up of a redesign of the lands being farmed and how to water them properly next spring. The more you tinker with it, the more you think you’ve come up with a genius plan and that the next year’s harvest will bring food to this town and even further beyond. Finally, by the end of winter, you present your plan to the administrators of the town who seem equally convinced of its genius. Sakubei has noticed oddities within, but didn’t know how to put it, and thought it would be fine too.

As the months passed, the peasants were informed of the reformation of the rice paddies that would occur next year. Most of them did not seem pleased at all and complained that this plan would ensure the complete crop failure of the next year. The magistrates seemed a bit too eager when trying to convince the peasants, and some of them have risen into revolt!

When Sakubei brings the news, you’re at a loss. “They’ve revolted?!” You ask. “Why?!”

“Well… They have revolted, so I couldn’t get the clearest of answers. But apparently some magistrates started beating peasants who didn’t go along with the plan. Usual procedure when peasants are this uppity. But… ALL of them seemed to insist that it was a horrible plan and they just rallied against it.”

You’re completely dumbfounded. “How is it horrible?”

“I wouldn’t know, my lord. What shall we do about this?”

Crap. This is a proper issue now. If you let these peasants go free and forfeit the plan, you’ll leave a horrible impression on pretty much anyone of higher status. But if you put them down and the plan is actually terrible, the common folks will hate you all around, even if the higher class will respect you for going through with your decisions. But… You were one of these people once.

>Even if the plan was horrible, they shouldn’t have revolted. We’ll gather ashigaru and put them down. [Ruthless]
>You and I will gather a small unit and head out to negotiate with them. [Negotiator]

“As you say, my lord.”
As Sakubei leaves, you sit in your hall slightly dumbfounded. Your first task, and it nets you a bloody peasant revolt. Whatever comes out of this won’t be good, but at least you can try to salvage some of your reputation.

Gearing up as the Yari Oni, you, Sakubei, and 20 other retainers head out to meet the peasants gathered outside the town of Machi. From your count, they’re more or less 200 men armed with simple weapons, coming from the town itself and surrounding villages.

You come up from the front and meet with a few them who seem to be their leaders, dressed in the usual peasant’s clothes and rags. They face you with pride in their hearts.

“Yari Oni!” One of the brash peasant leaders says. “You abuse your reputation with us! Your plan will leave us without good fields to tend and with many families without work!”

But… The plan’s totally fine! Right? You’re starting to wonder if you’re actually the bad guy here. “What’s your proof?” You ask the peasant.

“We tried to tell your magistrates, but instead they beat us with sticks and batons. We’ll not allow you to starve us out. If you’re gonna take over the samurai lands, at least do it properly!”

Yells of support come from the entire peasant army. Sakubei sticks close to you as does the rest of your retinue.

“Old Gamo treated us good! Then the Akita dogs came to plunder us, now an upstart rises up against the Akita and sends a warrior to help us cultivate our lands! Do you even have proper administrators back at home or are you all beaten up ashigaru upstarts?”

You’re feeling rage welling up inside you, but you successfully contain yourself.

>”You go too far with your words, face me in equal combat!” [Honorbound, Reckless]
>”Lord Harada only wants the best for you. It is not his fault that this happened.” [Dutiful, Humble]
>”Quiet yourself and sit down with me to negotiate. I should’ve done so from the start, it was my mistake.” [Honorbound, Humble]

The administrators who accompany are shocked, many of them used to be Akita lapdogs, and it seems that a samurai dealing with peasants with anything but a sword is a surprise to them. Still, you know what these people go through, and they wouldn’t go up in arms without proper reason. As you sit down with the various leaders of the peasants, they start bringing up every single mistake in your plan. Which are many, oh so many. The more you see, the more you realize that this was a complete fuck-up. Nothing made proper sense, this would’ve actually crashed and burned the economy of the town for a full year or two.

It’s with great shame that you have to nod your head to every single word said by the peasants. Working as a grim reminder that you're not so great after all. As they spoke, you made sure to pick up and learn a few things. Your knowledge of farming increased ever so slightly.

[Farming: 15/100]

Still, you’re now at an impasse. The administrators are rather unwilling to work with you, and seem mad that you took the words of the peasants to heart. Your only option here is to continue working with the peasants if you do want to make a good reform plan by winter, which they can then apply around the end of winter and the beginning of spring. But if you do go on through with them, this will only serve to piss off the veteran samurai of Harada’s court. Then if you don't, the peasants will be angry about your kiss-ass attitude.

You sit in the tent that was aptly prepared to house you and the negotiators, wondering what you should do next. Sakubei is equally unsure of what you should do:

"Whatever you do, it's probably going to be bad for you. Pick your poison, lord Ikeda."

You scratch your head intensely from the stress induced by this shitty situation. For once, you ask the Kamis to help you choose.

>You will not piss off the administrators further, just cancel the plan and head back to your castle. [Dutiful]
>You will work along with the peasants to better their situation, damn the pompous administrators. [Humble]
>You should head back to the Harada Clan’s capital and ask for further instructions. [Cautious]

You come to an agreement with the peasants. Kamis be damned if you weren’t going to get some results to Harada by the next year. The plans you’ve prepped with them seem much sounder than whatever you used to have. After this, you met them a few more times to kick things into motion and, eventually, the reforms are prepared to be put in motion when the end of winter comes.

Still, this was all better than having to kill more than a hundred peasants simply because they didn’t want to work. Overall, things could’ve gone much, much worse.

Back in the mansion where you’re hosted. The administrators complain that you’ve given up too much to the peasants, and that now many of them would be voicing their opinions even when it was not demanded, whether they knew what they were talking about or not. Your arguments with them often resulted in you showing to them how much better the plan you came up with along with the peasants was compared to whatever they accepted from you.

Anger and resentment all around as fall ended. You still had four more months, the entirety of winter, to continue developing parts of the town. The winter here was cold and snowy, and most people huddled up together in their homes, eating whatever they have and awaiting for the cold to pass.

>Population: Circa 1.000
>Agriculture: 5/10
>Livestock: 2/10
>Commerce: 1/10
>Resources: 2/10
>Manufacture: 2/10
>Morale: 5/10

You and Sakubei, without much help from the angry administrators, came up with a few things to do during the winter:

>Improve commerce by contacting nearby lords who’d be willing to resume trade with Machi.
>Improve manufacture by contacting artisans nearby and listening to their woes.
>Prospect the land for new and old resources to take advantage on for the next year.

Happy birthday! Ikeda is now 19. Though Japanese society usually didn’t celebrate birthdays back then. Oh well.
>>
I'm afraid this is the last post for the session, I got some stuff that needs doing around here.

We'll continue soon, I'll warn you guys in this thread whenever we do.

As it turns out, being nice to people makes people do good work.

I've archived the thread here just in case:

I got lazy with the tags for the second thread, oh well.

Commerce wont be that great until we actually make shit worth trading beyond rice

I've made a Patreon. I know it's usually not a welcome thing to shill out a patreon, but I've outlined the reasons for its existence within.

https://www.patreon.com/QMMerchantGuild

If you want to support my quest-making, join in on my merchant's guild. If you don't that's totally alright and you don't have to check it out at all.

Outside of this one shill, the patreon will only be shilled at the very end of a thread. After all the sessions for that thread have ended.

No need for drama, you can call me a money hungry bastard in Patreon Messages if you want.

Thank you for reading this. I'll be QMing again soon.

Next session will be thursday, around the same time as always (3-4PM GMT+1)

I can't wait for another time skip event! Can I roll third nat one in a row? See it this thursday (3-4PM GMT+1)!

I'm cool with your patreon, though did you mean this thursday or next thursday?
>>
I think this is my trip. Anyway, the session is moved to next thursday due to time constraints during easter. Next session should be good.

>One session a week he keeps fucking bailing last minute AND he wants money for it.
Nice try but worse try really.
>>
>>3450303
Thanks man.

>>3454273
I outlined how the money giving works in the patreon. This month I'd take no money due to the multiple bails I had to do, all for personal reasons.
>>
>>3455879
Wow maybe I should start to shill my players and force them to pay/donate me on Patreon. I run 5 days a week anyway.
>>
>>3456045
I'm not forcing anyone, you do you.
>>
Anyhow, I've made an AAR detailing how I felt about my questing throughout march-april:

https://pastebin.com/sGnwmLM0

If anyone feels like saying something about it, feel free to bring it up.

I've also added it to Patreon for safekeeping.

Next session will be in a new thread.

Thanks. Don't worry, if I had money, I would pitch in.
