Finally after two years in the service of the Dark Queen Quintis you have finally been promoted. No more marching through filthy peasant villages administering the Queen's justice, this is your chance to rise through the ranks of her Majesty's armies and become one of her generals, or so you thought.

Being placed in a garrison out in the middle of nowhere wasn't the promotion you had imagined, but after the death of your commander, your rise through the ranks seemed that much more possible. Through your leadership, your garrison holds its ground through an assault and infiltration by rebel forces and manages to capture two of its heroes. After transporting the two of them to the Capital, Queen Quintis decided to promote you to Captain and to add you to her collection of personal agents.

Your first mission as an agent of the Queen was quite the ordeal, nearly dying to a shape shifting mage, getting stampeded by a mercenary cavalry charge, and getting shot full of arrows as well as stabbed lot. In the end however you stopped the mercenaries attacking imperial caravans, and uncovered that they had been hired by the the rebels to disrupt trade between imperial, and desert merchants.

This is not the end of your troubles however upon returning to the Capital, you find that the rebels weren't just sitting on their hands while you were gone.

“Could you create a bridge of ice over the river?”

Mildri examines the map for a few seconds “Yes, but it will be very taxing if I do that, I won’t have much left in me to help you.”

“That’s alright, the ice bridge could end up being more valuable than any other magic spell, and you might not even end up fighting when all’s said and done.”

The open of the inn’s front door catches your attention, and you turn to see Randolf standing in the doorway, “Excellent timing Randolf, I just received our next assignment from the Queen w-”

“As have I,” he interrupts. You give him a quizzical look and he continues. “Since you’ve been cleared of suspicion, there’s no need for you to have a commissar by your side anymore. I being reassigned to help the Royal Spymaster on a mission he’s been given, I just came by to say my goodbyes.” Giving you a proper salute Randolf goes on, “Captain, it’s been interesting, I can only hope that half the people I investigate end up being as much of a challenge as you.”

>“Farewell Commissar” he may not be YOUR commissar, but he is still a commissar and you need to stay on your toes.
>“Goodbye Randolf, I wish you luck on your mission, you’re going to need it.”
>“You were a pain in the ass, but I don’t think I would have wanted any other commissar by my side. So long Randolf, may our paths cross again someday, hopefully it will be on better terms.”

>Current plan for the assault: Set up crossbows, protected by heavies, across the river from the ritual site and fire on the shamans to kill the shamans and lure the swamp folk over the river where you will ambush/swarm them with your medium infantry. Then create an ice bridge over the river to finish off the remaining shamans and swamp folk still at the ritual site.

I need two more things from you:

>1. When you plan to attack, i.e. 3 days from now, or the day of the ritual, etc. (Remember the longer you wait, the more swamp folk and shamans there will be.)
>2. Time of day of your attack (day or night)

For the anon who was asking last thread, magic is not very easy to learn, and even then only those with natural aptitude ever become good at it. While you could learn animal magic eventually, it might take years for you to learn enough to cast a decent spell. You would have to study under a master for a number of years and even then without natural aptitude you will only be able to cast a tier 1 spell at most.

applying poisons to your weapon is possible, but you'd have to find an alchemist willing to do so. The selling of poisons is highly regulated under imperial law you see, so only a few alchemists have the means and would be able to sell to you.

>“Goodbye Randolf, I wish you luck on your mission, you’re going to need it.”

>As soon as possible

>day
Our soldiers can't see in the dark and we don't know what they are capable of.

During this time I realized a flaw on our plan, they could try to send a wave over the bridge while we cross, so Mildri should have a potion to regen her energy and be prepared to counter that if they try.

>“Goodbye Randolf, I wish you luck on your mission, you’re going to need it.”
Give him the antidote recipe we used on Needle against the assassin's poison.

Set up an ambush to intercep some of the warriors going to the ritual site so we can get a sample of their poison and prepare the antidote, we attack after we have it or the ritual day comes around, whatever comes first.

I prefer during the day but we can do it at night if we have to due to the antidote.

“Goodbye Randolf and good luck on your mission, but should your luck fail you, have this,” you quickly scribble down your recipe for detox tea and give it to him.

“What’s this?”

“It’s a recipe for a tea that will purge poisons and other toxins from your body, the last time I fought that assassin she poisoned one of my men and I used this to save his life. Be careful when you use it though, it has some nasty side effects.”

“Thank you Captain. Now if you’ll excuse me I’ve got another goodbye to say.” With that Randolf slides past you and sits down next to Mildri. At that same moment Selenas walks into the inn. She jumps slightly at the sight of you, but she takes a breath and steels herself as she approaches you.

“I don’t want to kill my friends,” she says, keeping her voice steady “But if I don’t you and hundreds more could die. So I’m coming with you and if I have to, I will… I will… I will kill my friends.” She finishes, her stony expression matching your own.

“Very well, if you say you will do it. Then I’ll believe you’ll do it.”

“Thank you,”

“Is that you lass?” Randolf calls from across the inn. He quickly crosses over to Selenas and asks, “So, have you made up your mind, are you staying?”

“Yes, I’m going to stay by Baldr’s side for the coming battle.”

Randolf sighs heavily “I thought you’d say as much. Are you sure though its no-”

“I’m sure Randolf,”

“Well I wish you luck then” Randolf closes in and hugs her “and stay safe.” Randolf breaks away from her and heads out of the inn.

“Where are you going?” she calls after him

“I’m being reassigned lass, you two have been freed of suspicion and you don’t need a commissar to watch you anymore.”

“So this is goodbye?”

“Yes lass, this is goodbye, but don’t worry we’ll meet again before all this is over, I guarantee it.” Randolf flashes both of you a smile before heading off down the street.

“If he’s being reassigned, then where are we going?” Selenas turns and asks.

“We’re being sent to eliminate, some swamp folk supporting the rebel army.”

“Swamp folk?”

“Yes, the same kind that killed your father.”

Selenas pauses for a moment then looks you directly in the eyes, “when are we going?”

>Try to get the poison yourself, a single man attacking the train of warriors is a lot less likely to draw attention.

Unfortunately, your travels are far from pleasant, as you travel the roads toward a suitable ambush spot, you are spotted, not by swamp folk, but by your ordinary gang of peasants. Wielding everything from large sticks, to scythes, to pitchforks, to in one man’s case an extremely old and rusted looking sword, the horde of fifteen men block the road in front of you as the man with the sword swaggers his way up to your horse.

“Hold there traveler, what’s your business on these roads.” The man asks putting as much authority into his voice as he can muster.

“We’re just passing through on way Jaun.” Your respond

“That ain’t no place I ever heard of,” one of the other peasants chimes in walking his way around your group. “Sounds like an excuse a spy would use.” He spits.

“Yeah and that armor he’s wearing is way too expensive looking for just a traveler.” Another peasant pipes up.

“Yep it looks like we caught ourselves some spies on their way to snoop on Falenta.” The man with the sword says, pointing his blade up at you.

The peasant horde had made its way over now and had encircled your group, if you wanted out of this mess, you’d have to act fast.

>Kill the idiot with the sword, peasants are natural cowards, with their leader dead they might just scatter.

Wait and you think she really cares about you. I have a question for you. How many of your fellows what you started with are still with you. How many times have you charged at the front and been slaughtered. And then when you have worn down your enemies The Mercenaries and the heroes charge right and taking all the praise for your hard work. How many of your towns have been raided by Bandits. How many of your wives and daughters raped by scoundrels. Do you still believe that the bright days of goodness and happiness will still come. She has lied to you. A queen offered you protection for freedom. You want your freedom but look as what has gotten of it. Now you will do as you wish I'm not going to stop you but think clearly look at what has happened and realize who is truly the worst her the queen or yourselves. As you realize that you are nothing more than a group of Bandits terrorizing your fellow Countryman. And how you're doing more harm than the queen could ever do and how meaningless it will be at the end.

“First of all it’s Falanta, not Falenta. Secondly, how dare you question me Walden Casenheim, Falanta’s holy lancer and general!” You let the indignation flow through you as you berate the hapless peasant. The rest of the peasant mob backs away slowly as the sword armed peasant at first confused by your reaction, was now wilting under you. “And another thing, who told you to be out here, do you want to give away our position to the Queen?”

The peasant can no longer even look up at you and merely mutters a reply “no one sir, sorry sir, we didn’t know sir.”

“Enough of your excuses, I ought to bring you all to Falanta and make you explain yourselves to her!” as the peasant approaches verge of collapse under your words, you relent “I will overlook your idiotic blundering if all of you head home and stay home until after the battle is over, agreed.”

“Yes sir, we will sir, thank you sir.” The man blubbers.

“Good, now GET OUT OF MY SIGHT.” You bellow, and the mop of peasants scatter, running as fast as their leg could carry them.

As the peasants run out of ear shot, you can hear Selenas snickering behind you. “You know you did sound a little bit like Walden.”

“Did I sound enough like him to fool the men guarding his tent?”

“I wouldn’t push your luck that far, Falanta would have sniffed you out in a second.”

“Well it’s a good thing, I’m more of a fighter than an actor. Let’s move on.”

You spend the rest of your trip in relative peace and arrive at the road leading from Falenta’s main camp to the ritual site at about dusk. Taking your time, you pick a good ambush spot and wait. As darkness truly begins to encompass the road, you have every one drink their Owl sight potions. The effects are almost immediate, your once pitch black surroundings were now as bright as they were at dusk. With your enhanced vision, you see the oncoming group far before they see you. It was a group of about 10 swamp folk, most of them appeared to be warriors, but one among them, a woman dressed in very colorful robes, looked to be a shaman. As the group approaches you weigh your odds.

Shit, its a big group but if we take them out it will be a big blow to their forces since they are expected to have less than 70 guys at the ritual.

Let's open up with a tier 3 spell centered on the shaman and Selenas and Baldr finish any, if any, that are left, she can take her potion and support us if many are left, if the spell fails we bail.

They are a bunch of midgets and a shaman. I think we just need to kill the Shaman ASAP, then Selena’s and Baldr can beat down the rest. Use the minimum amount of magic necessary to kill the shaman. We will have other patrols we need to take out as well.

>Swamp Warrior Slain

The first two swamp folk you and Selenas encounter barely have time to shout a warning before the two of you cut your way through them. The rest of the patrol recoils back from your attack and try to regroup around the shaman who begins some kind of singing chant. She barely gets past her first few words however as Mildri lets loose her spell, she kicks a puddle of muddy water sending a splash of water high into the air, with a few more words from her incantation the water hardens into rain of icy death, skewering most of the swamp folk and ending the shaman. The three remaining swamp folk scatter diving into the surrounding thickets the road.

“After them,” you shout “Mildri hit the one that went right, Selenas go after the one who ran back towards their camp, I’ve got the last one.” The three of your split up and chase after the little swamp folk. In the dense shrubs it’s hard to keep your eyes on your target and you’re surprised at how fast he moves somehow sliding between the denser pockets to grasses while you have to work just to move at a jog. You don’t let that deter you however as you crash through the foliage behind him.

Like a ship breaking waves you surge after the little swamp man, he desperately weaves between the grasses trying to either get ahead or out of sight, but no matter where he runs, or where he hides, you follow him. Approaching melee range, your quarry lets out a shriek as grasses tangle around his foot and trips falling onto the ground. Pressing your advantage you close on the man and prepare to deliver the coup de grace.

Meanwhile

“Damn this grass, damn that little rat, where is he?” Selenas mutters as she combs the grass for her target. A rustle of grass to her left warns her just in time to block a short spear thrust from the swamp warrior. He doesn’t relent though and presses her harder letting out a little war cry as he attacks.

A short distance away, Mildri unleashes her spell the warrior cries out as he is struck by a spear of ice jutting out of a puddle a foot away from him. Mildri catches her breath watching as the swamp warrior collapses into the grass.

Carving into your target, you deliver a deep cut into the swamp warrior’s side. Blood pours from the wound as the man kicks himself free of the grass and tries to get back on his feet. You are about to follow up and finish the man off when Selenas’s voice bounces around your head as she screams through your ring Baldr help!

Being pressed hard by the swamp warrior Selenas tries to hold on, but she just can’t stem the tide of blows. One lucky stab shoots past her defenses and plunges into her gut. Pulling herself off of the spear Selenas dances back and puts a thick patch of grasses between herself and the warrior as she reaches out to you through her ring.

Hold on, I’m coming, make some noise I can find you. you reply leaving the wounded warrior to stumble away into the grasses as you head off in the last direction you saw Selenas.

“Baldr, I’m over here,” She calls out from some distance away in the brush. You barrel through greenery at break neck speed, she wouldn’t have called you if her situation wasn’t dire, you can’t lose her, not now, not when you were so close.

Shouting at the top of her lungs, Selenas can only hope that you arrive in time as the warrior presses in on her again. The warrior is fast, ferocious and unrelenting as he attacks again and again, wearing Selenas down until, there and opening. Striking fast, the warrior’s attack slips through Selenas’s guard driving right for her heart.

You emerge through the brush just in time to see the spear thrust into Selenas’s chest, at that exact moment you reach out and focus harder than you’d ever done before and shout “STOP!” The warrior’s spear stops just short of her heart, a barrier erupts from around Selenas shoving the warrior back and away from her. That action was not without cost however, searing pain erupts in your own heart as the rings magic takes its toll. Fighting through the pain you step in between Selenas, and the recovering warrior. “I’m here,” you say over your shoulder at Selenas who had collapsed on to the ground and who’s only sign of life was the rise and fall of her chest. Readying yourself, you face off against the recovered swamp warrior as he charges toward you.

10 – 28 = -18 damage

Bonuses: -18 - 1[Savage Attacker] + 3[Armor] = 16 damage negated by Plate of Savior’s Mercy

Slowed by your wounds you can’t react in time as the swamp warrior closes and lashes out with flurry of strikes. Only able to knock aside the first strike, the warrior’s second stab speeds toward your throat, only to be pushed back by the light emanating from your armor. Letting out a scream of frustration at being denied a kill a second time, the swamp warrior flies into a rage striking out at you again and again trying furiously to end at least one of you.

now we have to loot and take care of Selenas, carry her to safety.

Looking from the side of the swamp warrior, his name was Ug'trax and he was accompanying his mate to the ritual, this would be her first ritual since they became bonded and they were happy to be on the road together, that was until all hell broke loose and he saw her die and run like a coward, but no more, he would avenge her

It is in that moment of rage that your opponent makes his greatest error, letting his blow through your guard, his spear glances off your armor as you swipe upward with your glaive carving through his abdomen and up into his chest. Pulling your weapon free you strike the back of the man’s knee, forcing him down. Then with a single slash, you part the warrior’s head from his shoulders and watch as his body twitches and falls into the grass.

Taking a breath you let some of your adrenaline drain away before heading over to check on Selenas. While she was still breathing, she was still unconscious and in bad shape, with two large punctures wounds, one in her abdomen and the other in her chest. Doing what you could, you bind her wounds closed and pick her up carrying her back to the road and your horses. As you make it back onto the road, you find Mildri collecting what looked like small water skins from the fallen swamp warriors. “I’ve got the poi-” Mildri stops mid-sentence as soon as she realizes who you’re carrying “What happened is she alright?”

“She’s alive, one of the swamp warriors gave her some trouble though, she should be fine given so-” As you say those words, Selenas convulses in your arms. Twitching and shaking, Selenas’s breathing becomes ragged and wheezing. Having trouble holding on to her, you set her on the ground.

“What’s wrong with her?” Mildri asks bending down to examine Selenas.

“I don’t know she was fine just a moment ago I don’t know what-” as your eyes catch on the poison skins in Mildri’s arms you realized the problem. “It’s the poison. She was stabbed by one of the swamp people. His weapon must have been poisoned.”

“What do we do, we don’t have an antidote for the poison yet?”

Several options leap to the front of your mind as you scramble for ideas. You could try to brew some of your detox tea, but you’d have to find the ingredients first and even after that, you’d have to light a fire which would paint a rather large target out here at night. You could give her a healing potion and hope that it would fight the poison long enough that the toxin would pass out of her, or you could ride out of here and just hope that she holds on long enough to get back to the Capital.

Finding the herbs isn’t the easiest of feats with the effects of the Owl Sight potion wearing off, but nonetheless you find what you need and head back to Selenas. When you arrive you find that Mildri had finished collecting a decent amount of burnable fire wood. You quickly check Selenas’s condition to find that she had gotten much worse since you’d left. She was sweating profusely, shaking uncontrollably, and fighting for every ounce of air she drew in. Unstoppering a healing potion, you pour the liquid into her mouth which she swallows. The effects are almost immediate, as she settles down and her breathing becomes easier. Having stabilized Selenas, you turn back to making the detox tea. Cutting off, grinding up, and mashing the ingredients, you prepare the herbs while Mildri starts a fire and fetches a small cooking pot from your horse and boils some water.

While you are waiting for water to boil, you can see torch light in the distance and growing closer every second. The tea wasn’t ready yet and it didn’t look like it would be ready by the time whoever was coming would arrive. You had to decide now, whether to try and hold off whoever was coming, or to abandon the tea and get out of there.

“Damit,” you mutter under your breath, “Mildri grab the pot we’re going to relocate before they arrive.” Mildri quickly cools the pot and picks it up as you kick out the fire and strap Selenas onto her horse. The ride wasn’t going to be pleasant for her, but it was either this or be captured or killed. Mounting your own horse and taking the reins of Selenas’s, you set off away from your ambush sight. As you slink away you watch the torch light reach your ambush site and stop, then the one large light breaks off into a bunch of smaller lights, one of which starts to follow the path you were taking.

Ok, we just confirmed that the healing potion retards the poison, we have 2 more, one on Selenas and one on Mildri, then we can take the Maiden ring from her and put the Knight ring on her so we can transfer some health in an emergency.

I say we ride in the direction of the capital, give her healing if needed along the way and when they give up or we arive, whatever comes first, we give her the tea.

If we can't ride very fast because she is strapped to the horse let's put her in front of us in our horse and pull hers along.

You instantly spur your horse to go faster, picking up more and more speed as your horse approaches a full gallop. With Mildri close behind you and Selenas bouncing on the back of her horse next to you, you push ahead hoping to outpace your pursuers.

You manage to stay ahead of your pursuers, but what they lack in speed, they make up for in persistence. You travel what you assume to be half way to the Capital, before your pursuers torch light dies out behind you. Even then you continue further down the road to be sure they won’t see your fire light as you resume making your tea. The ride had not done any favors for Selenas’s condition. She was convulsing again and her breathing sounded worse than ever, you untie her from the saddle and lay her on the ground. While the tea warms, you have Mildri remove Selenas’s armor and weapons so as not to get them dirty when the tea began its work. Carefully scooping up the hot tea into a cup you bring it over to Selenas. She was barely conscious now, and at one whiff of the rather pungent tea Selenas turns her head away from the cup.

“It doesn’t smell nice, it won’t taste nice, it’s going make you feel and do some rather unpleasant things, but this tea going to save your life so open up,” You growl. Selenas reluctantly turns her head back to you and takes a sip of the liquid. She almost immediately spits it out, but restrains herself and swallows the tea. You have her finish the whole cup before you let her rest again. Moments later, you hear Selenas retching as the tea takes effect. While Selenas was purging herself of the toxin, you take stock of your current situation.

You had obtained more poison than you probably need, Selenas was stable now and should be ready to move in a few hours, and the sun was starting breach the horizon bringing an end to this horrible night. The only thing left for you to do now was to get back to the Capital and have the antidote made. Although something is nagging at the back of your mind, while the plans you had made for the assault on the ritual site were all ready and fine, you had never actually seen the site with your own eyes, maybe it would be wise to survey the sight yourself and see if there was anything the scouts didn’t mention in their report?

They are in high alert and we are fucked up, we set up a scout mission before the assault, lets take Selenas back and nurse her to health, maybe find a more pleasant tea in our book. Thank Mildri for today, it was a long night.

Yeah, nah.... We saved Selenas at least two times tonight, first from the heart stab, that almost killed us and then from the poison, let's just take her back and treat that wound.
Funny, it's usually Baldr that almost dies in these things, this is the first time we almost lost a teammate.

You clamp down hard on that nagging thought. You’d survived a rough night, you weren’t about to risk it all just for a look at the enemy camp. It takes a little longer than you expected for the detox potion to wear off on Selenas, but eventually her retching recedes to an acceptable level and you push on for the last leg of your journey.

Tired, sore, and in need of a bath, you enter the Capital, the guards upon recognizing you and your battered state allow you in with no questions asked. The old healer at the hospital is delighted as you hand over several skins of poison “What did you do kill a whole…” his voice drops off as he notices your current condition. “Yes well, I’ll get started on making an antidote it should be ready in a day or two.” The healer leans past you and pointing at Selenas asks “Is she alright?”

“She got stabbed by one of the swamp warriors.” You reply looking back at Selenas who was swaying in the saddle and trying her hardest not to vomit.

“Oh dear,” The healer says walking past you and over to Selenas. “Off the horse young lady I need to take a look at you,” the healer says. In no shape to object Selenas slides off her horse with the healer’s help.. He quickly checks her over making note of her bandaged wounds and sickly complexion, before turning and asking “Did you bandage these wounds?”

“Yes,”

“Hm, not bad, they’re effective, if a little sloppy. I don’t recognize her symptoms, you said she was poisoned? If that’s true she should be dead not puking her guts out. Did you do something to her?”

“I gave her an herbal remedy that’s supposed to rid the body of toxins. It worked on a different poison so I thought why not try it on this one.”

“Ah a purging concoction, they do work, although their effectiveness does vary and the toll on the body is rather extreme. Where did you learn all this from, did you attend a healers hospital, or were you an herbalist son before you became a solider?”

“I learned from watching you healers work on soldiers when I served on the Eleven front, after that well…”

>“I was always interested in the healer’s arts I picked it up as a hobby of sorts.”
>“On the battlefield, there isn’t always a healer by your side to put you back together when you get hurt, so I learned how to do it myself.”

“I took a liking to it and picked up a few books on herbalism. After that well, I found that wherever I went people needed a healer’s help so I did what I could for them until we could find an actual healer.”

“Hm, well if you did as good a job on this girl as you did for the other people you’ve treated, I’d say they were in good hands. You did a fine job but your companion will need some additional treatment. Having her body purge the toxin works well for most poisons, but swamp folk poisons like to stick around. I’ll keep her here and make sure that the poison doesn’t flare again and when the antidote is finished, she’ll get the first taste.”

“Alright, but I’ll need her back when you finish that antidote.”

“She should be well by then, now go and get some rest yourself, you look terrible.”

>This’ll be it from me for tonight.

You needed rest and you needed it badly. You’d been up all night fighting and running for your life, sleep sounded like just what you needed and judging from how Mildri looked, she needed some too. Heading back to the inn you take a bath and notice a large bruise on your chest, over where your heart was. That blow you blocked for Selenas must have been some hit to do that to you. Finishing up, you finally lie down on your bed and drift peacefully off to sleep. You awake some hours later, it was just after dusk outside and a large waxing moon was lifting into the sky. You ponder going back to sleep, but you figure you can use this time to catch up on some important things, the most important one being writing that letter to your mother. You hadn’t written to her before because well she couldn’t read, but that wasn’t the only reason.

>Well it’s been a long time since we delved into Baldr’s backstory, but now’s the time to fill in some gaps.

When Baldr left home to join the army, he left his parents on:
>Good terms, he hasn’t had time to write his parents since he joined.
>Bad terms, he’s been afraid to write his parents and dreads meeting them after how they parted.

Baldr joined the army because:
>He wanted to see the world beyond his little village, and do something besides plant crops the rest of his life. It is only later that he would become a hardened and loyal solider of the Empire.
>He felt that it was his duty. Baldr was a loyal citizen of the Empire even before he became a solider
>He got conscripted. While not quite understanding why he was pulled away from this home, Baldr would eventually come to understand his service and its importance to the Empire.

Lastly and not important to Baldr’s backstory, what do you tell your parents:
>Just tell them that you are alive and well.
>Let them know where you’ve been and what you’ve been up to since you left.
>Warn them of the coming battle and that they may never see you again.
Feel free to plug a Write In to any of the prompts above, but for my sanity please format it like this:

Maybe his parents supported the rebels or fought against the queen somehow, and Baldr joined as a way to keep them from being punished.

>He felt that it was his duty. Baldr was a loyal citizen of the Empire even before he became a solider
>He got conscripted. While not quite understanding why he was pulled away from this home, Baldr would eventually come to understand his service and its importance to the Empire.

Baldr joined the service to protect his family from being punished for being rebels. It would also explain why he was relegated to serving under a shit hobgoblin dungeon despite his valorous actions against the elves, the Empire didn’t truly trusted him at that point.

>Warn them of the coming battle and that they may never see you again.

Baldr remembered the day he was conscripted. He was scared and confused, he didn't understand why he was fighting , he didn't understand it when he was first training with his Troop. He didn't understand it when he saw that tragedy the first time he entered the forest. It was only after he started to think about the people around him, about why they they were fighting and dying. He himself just fought out of fear and anger . He didn't want to die and who could blame him . When he was suffering from dysentery and malaria. When he was gutted and accidentally ate a poisonous Apple. And that one time that he nearly got alcohol poisoning because he drank an entire Barrel terrible terrible wine. It was ironic it was when he finally left the front and saw how peaceful is was back home that he realize why he was fighting. Why they were forcing people to fight. It was so That Others May Live freely and peacefully, so they can live and beautiful Blissful ignorance. Baldur missed his parents his brothers and sisters. But back home they were safe, they had a warm fire and then a nice meal every day. You never understood why his grandad had that sort under his bed. But now he knew why. It was so that if one day something terrible would happen, he would be able to protect himself and his family his son, his daughter-in-law, and his grandkids.

Ever since you’d been sent off to fight on the elven front, you’d learned your letters and numbers, but never really had time to use them. Even after that your life rarely gave you and opportunity to write, but now so close to what be the last battle you’ll fight, you feel like have to write them, but what will should you write?” You’ve changed a lot since they last saw you that fateful day when the conscription plucked you from your home. You didn’t quite understand why you had to fight at the time, but now, after all you’ve seen, the answer to that question is obvious. It was for them, for everything you see around you. That is why you had to fight and bleed, and why so many others had to die.

Memories of the elven front start to creep back in, but you shake them off and focus on writing you letter. As the memories retreat, you know what you have to write, just by getting this letter they will know that you are alive, but you may not stay that way for long and you don’t want them to worry if the next time they hear of you, it will be news of your death. So, it with these heavy thoughts on your mind, that you start writing.

Mom and Dad you’re no doubt shock that anyone send you a letter, but don’t be alarmed it is just me your son Baldr. I just wanted to let you know that I am alive and that well, I might not be coming back. I’m sure you came to terms with the fact that I might die in the Queen’s service when I left. I’m writing you to say that I still might and that well things are going to get a lot worse for me. A great battle is coming, and many people will no doubt die, me among them. Regardless of what happens I want you to know that I served well and I do not regret getting conscripted. I realize now just how important my service is, it is not just service to the Queen, but service to you, my family I love you all very much and I hope that I can see you again, but if I don’t, do not weep for me, I will have died doing what I did for you and everyone in the village.

Your Son Baldr

Finishing your letter you fold the paper up and lay it on your bed to give to a courier in the morning. You weren’t quite tired yet so you decide to take a walk. As you descend into the dark inn’s main room, you notice off in a far corner a small candle flickering. Illuminated by its little dancing light was Mildri deep in her books. She hadn’t noticed you yet and might never the way she’s scanning her book.

>Last post of the night

“Mildri,” you call out to her. She snaps her attention away from the tome and squints into the darkness until she finally spots you.

“Oh, Baldr, it’s you,” she says relaxing a little.

“C’mon lets go for a walk,” you gesture for her to follow you as you head toward the door. Mildri, shocked for a moment stares dumbly at you before finally realizing what you’d just said. She slams her book shut and nearly vaults over the table to catch up to you.

Once outside she asks “Where are we going?”

“To the markets.”

“This late at night?”

“You never know who might be out selling things, beside we aren’t looking for normal goods and night shops don’t usually sell normal goods.”

“I guess.”

“Anyway the market isn’t really the purpose of this walk.”

“It isn’t?”

“No, we’re going to talk about your demon problem as well, so why don’t you start by telling me a little bit more about this demon inside you. What’s her name?”

“Well, her name is Aborea.”

“Okay, what kind of demon is she exactly I know you told me she was a demon of vengeance, but that’s a little vague?”

“Yes well it’s just that she’s kind of hard to describe. I used vengeance because when I called out to a demon to help give me vengeance she came, but I don’t think she’s actually a demon of vengeance. She’s very good at ice magic which is why I’m so good at it, so I think she might actually be an ice demon.”

“So she’s an ice demon who granted you your vengeance, and then refused to leave.”

“Well, when most mages summon a demon, they usually add some sort of binding spell with the ritual so that when they desire the demon can be banished back, but when I summoned her I wasn’t thinking clearly and summoned her without any restrictions. So yes, she refuses to leave, but I’m not sure exactly what she wants. I summoned her to get my vengeance and didn’t care what would happen to me afterward. I hear that most demons that a mage will summon will often try to slip their bonds and either possess the mage, or try to manifest themselves into world. Aborea had the chance to possess me when I first called on her. I was a young and weak mage, I should have been an easy way into the world for her, but for some reason she merely entered me and gave me the aid I wanted.” Mildri’s last words are almost more to herself than to you as she ponders why Aborea hadn’t just possessed her.

>“Why not just ask her, go on and ask her why she hasn’t possessed you yet.
>“I can ask her if you’d like, besides I have questions for the Aborea.”
>Let Mildri think the market is just ahead and you want to do some shopping.

Side note: our name is Baldur Blooddragon, right? Is Blooddragon a common last name in this world or are we a descendent of a fallen household or noble. >Sorry guys I had a very busy day today so this will be my only post of the day.

“Why not let me talk to her, I could find out her intentions.”

“Are you sure, she’s rather difficult to deal with?”

“I’ve dealt with her before, and besides, I know you’ll be helping me from inside. We’ll get her to talk.”

Mildri gives you a hopeful smile, the first smile you’ve ever seen from her. “Okay,” and with that closes her eyes and her face falls slack. You watch and wait, at the first flicker of movement you seize the initiative immediately and begin questioning the demon. “I know you’ve been listening Aborea, so just come on out and say it. Why didn’t you fully possess Mildri?”

“Oh, my you’ve become rather forward Captain, I thought yo-”

“Answer the question Aborea. You’re not talking out of this one.”

“I see,” she responds fidgeting slightly “Yes, you’re both quite persistent and here I tho- Oh alright already.” Aborea snaps over at something over her shoulder. Taking a breath she continues “I felt sorry for her okay, that’s why I didn’t fully possess her.”

“You felt sorry for her? Can you even do that?”

“Yes, I have feelings just like you.” She retorts slightly offended “But I didn’t fully take her over just because I felt sorry for her. I’ve seen what happens to demons who try to manifest in this world, or possess a mage. They die, usually horribly, you humans don’t seem to like demons in your world all the much.”

“With all you’ve done to Mildri, I can’t imagine why,” You say sarcastically.

“Oh shut up, she was acting on her own feelings, I just gave her the will to act on them.”

“We’re getting off topic, you said you’ve seen what happened to other demons who manifest here, so you chose to only partially takeover Mildri in so that you can hide better and remain here longer, But without full control over Mildri, you really don’t get to do much in this world do you.”

“It’s still far better here with only minor control over a human compared to what it’s like back in my home. There’s so much color and contrast here, everything in my realm is just so samey, it gets boring real quick.”

“So you decided to come here because you were bored?”

“Yeah, why do you think demons even come here, it certainly isn’t because you humans are great companions.”

“But if we humans aren’t good companions why are you sharing Mildri’s body, you could have easily possessed her when she first summoned you. You could have just laid low and done whatever sightseeing you wanted to do on your own. I know you said you felt sorry for her but come on. You couldn’t have felt sorry enough for her to spare her life at the expense of your freedom.”

“And what if I did huh, why is that so hard to believe.” Aborea’s tone was rather defensive with that last remark, it appears you’ve found a weak spot.

>“Because demons aren’t sympathetic beings, you’re power hungry, devious, and only look out for yourselves. You don’t care about Mildri, that’s just a cover for your real goal of hiding in the shadows until you see your moment to fully take over Mildri and do what you want.”
>“If had really felt bad for her, you wouldn’t have possessed her in the first place.”

“Because if you truly felt sorry for her you would have never possessed her in the first place.”

“And what would have happened to her then? Some other demon would have found her and did what I didn’t, they would have destroyed her. Possessing her was the most merciful thing I could have done for her. Leaving her for another demon would have been cruel.”

“So then why do you stay with Mildri. You saved her from being possessed by another demon mission accomplished. You can just go now so why haven’t you left.”

“Because she needs me.”

“No, she doesn’t, the last thing she needs is you.”

“How would you know? You didn’t see her back then, you didn’t know what it was like.”

“I know that she doesn’t need you now.”

“Yes she does.”

“Oh really, why don’t you ask her?”

“Mildri doesn’t know what she wants.”

“She knows that she doesn’t want you.”

Aborea emits a low growl before a blast of cold wind slams into you “Enough!” She shouts, “What makes you an authority on what’s best for her?”

“What makes you one?” A second blast even stronger blast hits you forcing you backward.

“Because I’m the reason she’s still alive. I cared for her, I saved her. I make her express herself. Without me she never would have left that awful school, she would have remained a scared little girl with no power, no personality, and no hope. Without me here to guide her, she would be nothing.”

Aborea was fuming now and ice was slowly creeping over the cobbles around her. You will have to tread carefully here.

> “Why then, why do you care for her so much, why care for this hopeless girl?”
> “You save her by destroying her. If you keep interfering with her in the name of saving her you’ll only end up making her suffer for the rest of her life, she won’t grow, she’ll only be your safe little puppet.

“Why then, why do you care for her so much, why care for this hopeless girl?”

“Because she reminds me of me alright, there you finally forced it out. I’m weak and hopeless just like her.

“You’re powerless?” you ask genuinely surprised.

“Yes, I am nothing compared to what a strong demon is. Mildri was my only hope of survival. when I heard her calling out for aid, I saw my chance to possess a human host and escape my realm and being swallowed by a stronger demon, but when I saw her and heard what she wanted help with I… I…”

“You sympathized with her. You didn’t want to swallow up Mildri because you’d been in her shoes.”

“Yeah and since then I’ve been trying to help her. That’s why I can’t leave she needs my help in getting stronger as much as I need hers to stay grounded to this world.”

This was certainly not what you had expected when you had decided to help Mildri with her demon problem. Even if Aborea was telling the truth, her effect on Mildri was less than helpful. What were you going to do about this?

>Aborea and Mildri are inseparable, (it looks like you’ll have to help them both work together better.)
>Mildri doesn’t need this demon she needs to grow as a person on her own. (You’ll agree with Aborea for now, but you’ll try to find a way to remove her from Mildri.)
>Maybe it’s not Mildri who needs to get rid of Aborea, but the other way around. If Aborea wanted to possess Mildri to gain strength, then maybe if she fully possessed Mildri she would be a powerful tool, and will surely be an asset in the coming fight. (You’ll try to convince Aborea that she should abandon and control Mildri.)

We've always told people to make their own choices. Despite it all.
"Look personally speaking I would rather have either one of you always in control. But that's not my choice, you and her have to work this out. And if she comes for me to help I will get you out of there but if she doesn't want you out, than I will do nothing. Despite my better judgement." sighs " you two are going to handful, aren't you."

“If that’s the case, then why didn’t you just talk to Mildri about it?”

“I might have if she would listen to me instead of just drowning me out.”

“Well, now’s a good time for you two to discuss it and Mildri, if you’re listening still, you need to decide whether Aborea stays, and Aborea if she says yes I expect you two to work out your differences. I don’t want any more blowouts between the two of you, understood.”

“Sure, whatever.”

“Good, now I’m going to continue this walk to the market, you’re welcome to join if you’d like.”

“Sure Mildri and I can walk and talk and besides it’s rare for me to get to see the outside when I’m in control.” Aborea says a smile returning to her lips.

You walk into the market square to find what you’d expect empty stalls and departing merchants, although there are a few stalls still open. One however catches your eye, a massive wagon with lamps emitting a purple light and a rather familiar old woman out front as you approach the wagon, the woman catches sight of you. “Oh well lookie here a return customer. How are the rings working out dearie?”

“Just fine thank you.” You say quickly as her eyes scan you over and make all your hairs stand on end.

“That’s good to hear, and who’s this you’ve brought with you.” The old woman says shifting her gaze over to Aborea.

Aborea flinches under the woman’s gaze and immediately blurts out “You’re not human.”

“Oh you’ve brought and astute one with you this time. What makes you think I’m not human dearie?”

“Human’s gazes don’t cast magic like that on whim.”

“Can you tell me what kind of magic it was dear?”

“Sight Magic,” Mildri’s voice says “It lets see a person see through objects and lets them see what things a person has underneath their clothes, but not just that, yours is also strong enough to pierce magic barriers and can even see into a person’s mind and soul. It’s too strong for a human to do as easily as you’ve just done it.”

“My my you are a smart girl, but can you tell what I am?”

“You’re a goddess, you must be nothing else as powerful would be a traveling saleswoman, and from the fact that you’re running this merchant stall, I’d say you’re a goddess of merchants.”

“Correct,” Turning to you the goddess says, “I must say dearie, you have excellent taste in traveling companions.”

“More like I have excellent luck to have been given them.”

The goddess chuckles “Yes I suppose that’s about right. Now what can I do for you dearie, you didn’t just pop in to say hello now did you?”

“If you’re a goddess of merchants, then why did you appear to me, I’m not one of your worshippers?”

“Dearie if I only sold goods to my followers, I wouldn’t make a single coin. First of all they generally aren’t in the market for my goods. Secondly, I find that gods, adventurers, heroes, and demons far more interesting than any trader or merchant and more likely to spend money. Lastly my followers are a haggling bunch of bastards, they’d fight me on the price of everything, and even though I’m supposed to be a goddess of merchants I hate hagglers. Bunch no good copper pinching tight assed cheapskates.” An aura of energy begins to form around the goddess as she speaks. The lamps on her cart begin to flicker and fade and you get the feeling you should be anywhere but here. Noticing the effect she was having the goddess shakes herself and returns to normal. “Sorry about that dearie, I just get so worked up when I think of all the money those stingy skinflints have cost me. Anyway dearie what can Merrin goddess of trade do for you?”

Pointing to a crate of healing potions you say “I’ll take one of those healing potions, and last time I was here you had a book, I think it was called Handling Your Inner Demons?”

The goddess pulls one of the vials of healing liquid out of the crate and places it on the counter “There you go, as for that book I’m regret to tell you I sold it, to another god in fact. He seemed to be rather distraught over something a human had said to him and he was looking for guidance. I offered him a kind word or two and that book.

“Hmm, if that’s the case then what would you have for magical items, in particular something that will help me survive blows, or make me tougher.”

“Let me see here,” the goddess says turning around and clambering up into her wagon. A few moments of loud bangs, the sound of myriad objects falling over, and the goddess’s cursing later, she reemerges from the wagon carrying a collection of things. Laying them out on her counter she explains each item. “This is an Oak Heart Belt.” She says laying down a belt that looked like it was made of wood, yet moved as if it was made of the supplest leather. “It will make you as tall and sturdy as an oak, but be careful through it has a secondary and less pleasant effect. Wearing the belt for an extended period of time will turn your skin to bark, while better at stopping a sword it will make it harder for you to move and will itch like crazy.”

Laying out a necklace next the goddess explains “This is just a simple vitality necklace, it should let you take a few more blows”

Lastly hefting up a pair of gauntlets the goddess tells you “These are the Gauntlets of Fortune’s Bane. The goddess of good luck is a fickle bitch and I should know I’ve dealt with her before. If she should smile on your enemies rather than you, these gauntlets will make them pay for her kindness and can even turn the tables when your luck is exceedingly bad. So now tell me dearie, which one do you want?”

No. This one is extremely situational. It doesn’t mitigate or prevent damage unless we crit fail, AND the enemy rolls a crit. It does retribution damage on an enemy crit, but it doesn’t prevent or help us avoid damage at all. The ONLY time this piece of trash item is useful is when we roll a 1 AND the enemy rolls 20 in the same round.

>Last post of the night.

“I’ll take the belt.” You say dumping a large portion of your remaining coin onto the table.

“Excellent choice dearie, I think it will suit you very well,” the goddess says simultaneously scooping up your coin and handing over the belt.

Attaching the belt to your waist, you immediately feel its effects. You feel not only sturdier, but stronger as well. “Thank you Merrin, tell me will you be in the Capital for much longer. I could always use more of your trinkets. They’ve saved my life and the lives of my companions more times than I’d like to admit”

“Oh you flatter me child. Yes I will be in the Capital for a while longer, with the coming conflicts I think I will find many buyers for my goods here. I’ll be here every night so feel free to stop in.”

“I’ll do that, good night Merrin,” and with that you depart the market.

On your walk back to the in Aborea speaks “It seems that we demons aren’t the only ones interested in the affairs of you humans. How do you do that?”

“Do what?”

“How do you just talk to demons and gods like we couldn’t destroy you in the blink of an eye, are you oblivious to the danger you put yourself in, or are you just so bold you’re reckless.”

"For demons and gods, what you do here is most likely ether for your own amusement, it it's for your own sense of duty. I can relate to both. For example I once met a god, he was crying moping and general unproductive. You see he had lost his duty, his sense of purpose. And that's the thing for gods, they have to do what Their aspect is, and what their followers believe them to do. War God is a God of War fighter. I would run away from him in a heartbeat. Every other God has to follow their aspect and what their Believers believe them possible to do. You demons are the same aren't you. Succubus and Incubus, have do you with the expect of lust. They feed off of it as well as encourage others to be lustful. Demons of greed are well often greedy. Demons of Wrath are wrathful. Excetera. You people, or demons I should say, are predictable. because of that you don't really scare me. People and their erratic, irrational, and sometimes down right insane actions that scare me. You had time to stop by and see how Selenas and the potion were coming along before you met with the Colonel. So, finishing your breakfast you take a quick look around the inn. Mildri nowhere to be found, you set off to the hospital alone. When you arrive, you stop a young healer and ask were you can find the old healer you’d given the poison. Thankfully, the healer knows who you’re talking about and leads you up to the third floor of the hospital to a rather large alchemy lab. Glassware, apparatuses and reagents line the walls in tall shelving units and most of the rooms available walking space is taken up by large tables filled with half-finished or still reacting alchemic concoctions. The young healer leads you to a far back corner of the room where sits the old healer mixing reagents into a bubbling cauldron of something, while miscellaneous other substances foam, hiss, or change color in their beakers around him.

“Sir, a Captain Baldr is here to see you.” The young healer says, drawing the attention of the older healer.

“Ah, Captain your antidote is coming along quite nicely it should be ready in two days’ time. I must say those swamp folk have come up with quite the virulent substance this time. A single drop is enough to sicken even the halest of men and kill them within hours of first contact.”

“Speaking of sick people, how is my companion.”

“Not well I’m afraid,” the old healer says not looking up from his work. “She’s unconscious and running a fever. While you did an admirable job of bandaging her wounds, they still got infected. I believe it is the poison’s fault. It likely prevented her body from fighting off the initial infection. Though I must also admit, that despite your best intentions Captain, your purging concoction while saving her from initial death by poison weakened her body’s ability to handle the infection.”

“I- I didn’t know.”

“Relax Captain, I don’t blame you for anything, and you shouldn’t blame yourself, you did the best you could with the knowledge and materials you had on hand.”

“Is she going to make it?”

“I’m doing what I can for her, but she likely won’t improve until I can finish and give her the antidote. Once the poison is assuredly gone from her, I can do more to treat her infection and fever. If you’d like to see her my assistant here can take you to her although she’ll likely be unconscious yet. I’d take you myself, but I must keep tending to this antidote.”

Welp. Time to get worried sick and promise her everything is going to be alright even though we don't know it for sure.

Reminds me of that time she was being transported to the capital, the uncertanty, the fear of losing something we didn't even know what it was at the time, and the hopelessness of not being able to do jack shit at the moment and just wait and hope for the best.

“Yes I’d like to see her, but before I do I’d like to ask if you have any old books on healing I could borrow?”

“I’m afraid not, we have texts on healing, but I’m afraid that they are far too valuable to be taken out of the hospital. I’ll tell you what though, you seem like you’re genuinely interested in the healing arts. Any night you can’t sleep, or get the itch to learn more about healer’s work come on by and I’ll teach you what I can. I don’t sleep much at night so don’t feel bad if you show up at midnight, I’ll likely be awake anyway.”

“Thank you… I don’t believe you’ve told me your name?”

“It’s Gregory, although Old Man works just as well, many people here call me that already. Now follow my assistant here and he’ll take you to see your companion.”

Gregory’s assistant leads you further up in the hospital to a room on the top floor. The room itself was completely dark with only a little light leaking in from the shuttered windows. Laying on one of the beds in the room was Selenas, bundled up in a thick wad of blankets, yet shivering. As you approach her bedside you can hear her slightly labored, but steady breathing. She shows no response as you come up beside her. Gregory’s assistant rewets a rag and places it back over Selenas’s forehead while you struggle slightly with what to do. You’d seen dead and dying comrades before, watched as the life left their eyes while they cried out for help, or silently and resolutely accepted death. This was different though to see her, someone you’d genuinely come to care for, sick and suffering before you with no way to aid her well you just didn’t know what to do.

>If there’s nothing you can do then there is nothing to be done, you’ve seen her, she’s alive and with Gregory’s help she’ll get better. You’ve just got to move on and keep working, she’ll return eventually. In the meantime it’s no use worrying over her.
>Try to say something encouraging, you’ve heard it helps and you’ve had to keep the dying company more than a few times out in the field.

Taking Selenas’s cold and clammy hand in yours, you sit down next to her. “I don’t know if you can hear me, but I guess that doesn’t really matter now does it, I’d say the same things to you if you were awake or not. Hold on, the healers are working on an antidote for the poison and should have one soon, but in the mean time you have to hold on. I know that you’re strong enough to survive this. You’ve survived way tougher things in the past. Hell you survived me, that alone should show just how tough you are.” You laugh to yourself at that, after all almost everyone who’d crossed you had ended up dead or worse, except for this lucky girl. “I know you’ll make it Selenas, you just have to hold on.” You finish, and spend just a few more moments holding her hand.

Eventually, you pull yourself away from her side. As much as you’d like to spend all day with her you have a duty to fulfill. “I have to go now Selenas, but I’ll come back and when I do, you’ll be back on your feet.” You say your farewell and you exit the room. Leaving the hospital, you head off to attend to your next duty, meeting the Colonel and your troops. You try the city garrison’s barracks first as that was where you’d seen them holed up last. Upon reaching the garrison, you ask one of the garrison guards if the Colonel had his men stationed there. The man nods but points you toward the Capital’s eastern gate saying that the Colonel had been taking his men out there every day for exercises. Thanking the man you head out the eastern gates to find that he had been telling the truth. The area outside the eastern gates had been thoroughly transformed into a training ground. Large forces of infantry and cavalry where running mock battles and combat drills in near perfect sync with the bellowed commands of officers. You make your way to the large command tent at the edge of training grounds and inside, you find the Colonel survey the movements of his men in front of a large map table.

“Colonel.” You announce your presence and give the man a salute.

The man turns to examine who had just addressed him. It takes him only a moment to recognize you and immediately his mood shifts. “Captain Baldr, I assume that you’re the agent the Queen has assigned to take my men.”

“Yes Colonel I’m to receive a detachment of your men for my mission.”

“Hmph I was expecting you yesterday, what kept you?”

“My plan to disrupt the swamp folk’s ritual required that I-”

“Wait, you already devised a plan, without consulting your subordinating officers.”

“Yes sir I-”

The Colonel interrupts you with a loud sigh “Captain you should never neglect to consult your subordinates. Some of them have been fighting for far longer than you, and others know things you don’t. Not tapping into their experience is waste of their talents.” The Colonel pauses and lets the frustration drain from him “But I guess I can’t fault you too much for not knowing, this is probably your first time commanding a force of veteran troops who might actually know something. There is larger issue here however, even after you’d formulated your plan, you didn’t come here immediately to brief your soldiers on what they’d be doing and start preparing them for the coming operation. That is something I thought you would have known after your defense of your garrison. So, Captain what so grabbed your attention that you would neglect your troops readiness?”

"I see colonel, I understand your concerns. My plan was made as soon as I had and given the mission. It is incomplete and imperfect. And if you and your men come up with a better plan then I will follow through. As well I had also been addressing the problem with the swamp man's poison. Which is why I have been a day late. I had sense my people to retrieve it , so it was possible to make antidotes. And before you go off on that, I'm sure they would be able to just pick off a small detachment of our enemies to get that said poison. As well, it the most concerning part of our mission. “I was a day late sir, because our foe, the swamp folk, are known for their poisons and I was gathering ingredients to make an antidote for said poison.”

The Colonel’s eyebrows rise as he takes a breath, and suddenly you can see your death in front of you, died of tongue lashing will be etched on your tombstone. “So you wasted valuable time gathering ingredients that other soldiers could have retrieved while you could have spent an extra day on preparing your troops, reformulating your plans, or dozen other things more worthy of that time. Captain,” The Colonel sighs “I thought your promotion to Captain was a bit hasty, but I gave you the benefit of the doubt at the time and accepted the Queen’s decision. Now though after this incompetent display, I wonder whether I should let you anywhere near my troops.” The Colonel pauses and glances out over his drilling men. “This is your last chance to prove to me that you’re worthy of your position. If you show any more signs of incompetency or prove a danger to my men. I will take them back and give the Queen a full report on your short comings. Am I understood Captain?”

“Yes sir,” you say, your soldier’s instincts save you from any further embarrassment.

“Good, lieutenant.” The Colonel calls out and a young looking solider enters the tent. “Show the Captain to his detachment.”

“Sir,” the lieutenant gives the Colonel a salute before leading you out of the tent and to corner of the practice field where several dozen men were drilling. “Captain, your men PLATOONS FALL IN.” The lieutenant shouts and has his words echoed by three distinct voices. The drilling troops quickly fall in and stand at attention before you. Two men and a woman stand at the front of the three columns and are beckoned over by the Lieutenant. “Captain, these are lieutenants Nolan, Long, and Ward.” The three of them salute you in turn as they are introduced “Lieutenants this is Captain Baldr, as you all know you have been assigned to him for a special operation. I will let the Captain explain the details of the mission to you, now if you’ll excuse me Captain I must be off.” The lieutenant gives you one last salute before departing.

>Last post of the day

“Alright lieutenants, let’s get right down to it. We’re going to be disrupting a swamp folk ritual that’s going to be happening 5 days from now. The first thing I need to know from you is what you know about swamp folk.”

The three lieutenants all glance at each other before shaking their heads, “Nothing sir,”

“Hm, alright I guess I’ll have to get you guys up to speed then. You can dismiss your men for now, this will probably take a while.”

The lieutenants dismiss their men and then follow you into a nearby unoccupied tent. Once inside you hand out the reports you were given and show them a map of the area while you lay out your plan of attack. When you finish you ask “Alright any questions?”

“Do we know their numbers?”

“No, the only thing we know is that the enemy forces will be a mix of warriors and shamans and that their numbers will grow as the day of the ritual approaches.”

“What about this poison they use is there an antidote for it?”

“I’ve got a healer working on that as we speak, as soon as he finishes it we’ll move on the ritual site.”

“Wait, Captain if our goal is to disrupt this ritual, why attack so early? If we succeed in taking the ritual site, what’s to stop them from using a different site later?” Lieutenant Nolan asks.

“Not only that Captain, but if we attack too early there might not be many shamans at the site don’t you think we should weaken their numbers before the main battle. If we attack during the ritual a good portion of the shamans will be busy maintaining the ritual and won’t be able to fight us.” Ward adds

“I have qualms with the attack from the shore. If indeed we go for a day light attack, once the enemy sees us they will likely alert their friends on the opposite shore and take cover in the woods. I would suggest attacking the night of the ritual, we could float down the river on rafts under the cover of night to get close to the ritual site then me and my crossbowmen can pincushion those shamans before they could even react.” Long says.

You take in all your lieutenants have to say and consider their suggestions carefully before responding.

Alright anons which suggestions do you take and what do you dismiss:
>Perform additional scouting and try to get a count of the enemy’s numbers before finalizing your attack.
>Attack the day of the ritual to kill as many of the shamans and swamp folk as possible.
>Attack via the river at night to avoid detection.

For convenience replies should be formatted like this:

Accept:
>Attack the day of the ritual to kill as many of the shamans and swamp folk as possible.
>Attack via the river at night to avoid detection.

Dismiss:
>Perform additional scouting and try to get a count of the enemy’s numbers before finalizing your attack.
>Feel free to write in an adjustment to the plan in case anything here helps you to refine your plan

Current Plan:
>Set up crossbows, protected by heavies, across the river from the ritual site and fire on the shamans to kill the shamans and lure the swamp folk over the river where you will ambush/swarm them with your medium infantry. Then create an ice bridge over the river to finish off the remaining shamans and swamp folk still at the ritual site.
>>
>>3321870
A question Qm, and it will be important if we decide to attack at night or day.

When we attacked the swamp guy patrols we did it at night so they wouldn't see us while we used the potiona, but thay didn't really have any penalties when we followed them through the woods and torches weren't mentioned.

Torches came up when those people were following us but I don't know if they were swamp folks.
So the question is:
Do they see better than regular humans in the darkness?

Accept:
>The scouting, we were going to do it ourselves but we better delegate thia one.
>And attacking on the day of the ritual.

As for attacking by boats, we have to remember that their shammans have water magic, so it would be easy for them to just flip the boats and send heavy armored men to the bottom of tge river.
We can make our initial assoult with them, but the idea behind frozing the river was to deny the shammans a terrain where they can fuck with us.

If we stand on the frozen river for the assault they won't be able to use earth, water or plabts and vines to grab at our feet.

So, the question remains,, hhow is their night vision?
And while and approach and first strike by boats seems good we should still freeze a part of the river for our troops to make the landing so the shammans can't fuck wuth the boats
>>
>>3322326
And respond to Nolan that no, they have to use that specific site for the ritual, but waiting and killing more shammans during the actual ritual will make the coming battle easier.
>>
>>3322326

Depending on your approach day or night could have a significant effect on your attack.

As swamp folk's night vision let me put it this way. They had torches with them when you first hit their patrol, but the swamp folk had little issue fighting you in close quarters combat at night.
>>
>>3322578
>>3322326

Basically the swamp folk can see in the dark pretty well at close ranges, but need torches and light to see further and more clearly.

This will probably be my last post of the thread before we fall off the board, so expect a new thread between now and Friday.
>>
>>3322326
Ok, so.

How about this, further scouting because that's what we wanted to do when we ran off with the girls.
Attack at the ritual night while the shammans are distracted.

Approach by boat and freeze the landing so we don't have to step on water to attack after the crossbows make their salvos.

>Looks like we're falling off the board slower than I thought. I guess I'll put out a few more updates.

“You bring up good points lieutenants, Very well then, we’ll attack the night of the ritual using the river to get close to the ritual site. After the initial salvo from your crossbowmen Long, my mage will freeze the river stopping the shamans from sinking us with their ice magic. From there the rest our forces will disembark and finish off any surviving shamans and swamp warriors. As for your concerns as to a different ritual site being used Nolan, the current site was specially selected by the enemy shamans as it met the specific requirements of the ritual.”

Your new proposal is met with nods and grunts of approval from your lieutenants. “No more questions then? Good let’s get to work, we’ve got a few days before the ritual I suggest we prepare as best we can. Long I want you get your crossbowmen used to shooting targets from rafts in choppy water, if we don’t kill most of the shamans in the first volley they’ll likely strike back and hard. As for you two, Ward and Nolan, I want your men training to fight on ice and unstable footing, as that’s what we’ll be fighting on for most of the attack. I can get my mage to help you with acquiring ice for the training.” The lieutenants nod and acknowledge their orders as you go on “There is one last thing we need to settle, we need to get a good count of the enemy and to learn a little bit more about the terrain before we go in. Which of your squads would be a good fit for a scouting mission?”

The lieutenants’ eyes all fall on Long. Realizing he’d been volunteered Long sighs “I have a squad who could do it.”

“Good we’ll send them out just a few days before we attack, I want as our information to be as accurate as possible before we attack. Now let’s get to it lieutenants.” Meeting adjourned you leave the lieutenants to organize their men while you retrieve Mildri. You were going to need ice for to train the men and she was the closest source. You head back to the inn to get her, but run into her on your way back.

“Mildri, what are you doing out here?” you ask.

“Oh, Captain that’s where you went I was looking for you,” Aborea answers you.

“Aborea, what are you up to? Is Mildri okay? If you-”

“Relax Baldr, Mildri agreed to this, it’s part of our new deal.”

“Your new deal?”

“Yes, I was tired of being cooped up inside all the time reading because Mildri’s such a book loving shut-in. So in the interest of us getting along better I struck a deal with her. Every other day I get to come out and explore while Mildri takes a break from being boring. I spent most of today wandering the Capital and I must say that you humans are the most boring people imaginable. Bickering over the price of bread, gossiping about what’s her name’s new suitor, all this… peace, is this what you people find interesting?”

“Peace is what you get when not everyone is a vicious demon.” Aborea rolls her eyes at that comment “And yes we often prefer peace to war, though at times it may not seem that way.”

“Well you humans can keep your peace and tranquility, I’d prefer some loud, fun, and vicious excitement. That’s why I was looking for you, nothing says calm or peaceful around you for long.” You frown at the correctness of her statement and wished it weren’t so damn true. “So, Baldr, what have you been up to?”

“I’ve just met with our troops for the assault, we’ve finished our plans for the attack, and now all that’s left is to prepare for the actual fighting.”

“Oh, that sounds like fun, anything I can do to assist you?” Aborea asks, giving you a mischievous grin.

“No, there’s nothing you can assist me with, Mildri on the other hand can.”

Aborea frowns “Why, what can she do that I can’t?”

“She can restrain herself and act professionally and right now I need someone who can do that, so if you’ll please let me speak with Mildri.”

“I can do that,” Aborea says attempting to sound more like Mildri.

“Can you now?”

“Yes I can, just give me the chance and I’ll show you.”

>Why not, this will give you a good chance to see how Aborea deals with ice magic and will let you gauge her ability to take orders.
