Once you're finished cooling yourself off after your encounter with Lola, you get up and head out to see who you can find.

When you spot Quria reading over something in one of the sitting rooms, you decide to step in and see what she's up to. She is your only link to the resistance, after all.

"Good news?" You ask.

She isn't surprised by your appearance. With ears like hers she probably heard you coming all the way from your room...

"Hardly" She says, putting the message on the table. "This is the first news we've gotten from Kirando all week, and it's not good..."

"Do tell" You say.

"Came from a messenger who's recuperating with his comrades in the city right now" She says. "The city is on lockdown. Nothing has been getting out"

"This messenger did" You say.

"One from a group of 20" She says. "All we got from him was this report, and mutterings about some kind of... worm god"

"A... worm god?" You ask.

"Some giant worm monster that's been eating everything coming into and going out of Kirando" She says. "On top of that I fear our cell in the Spire has been rooted out. They've been completely silent for a few days now"

"Is there any good news?" You ask.

Quria has to think for a while about it, but she does come up with something. "The Emperor is still alive" She says. "With the Legion's attention out here, he's drumming up support to try and drive them out of Johnston"

"I'd prefer it if he were drumming up support to help us take Kirando" You say. "But with Shai-Hulud out there on guard duty, it might be onto us to get the spice flowin' again..."

Quria looks confused. "Uhh... spice?" She asks.

"Don't worry about it" You say.

"So you haven't heard anything from the spire?" You ask.

"Not a thing" She says. "The last information we received from there was that a large Legion presence had moved in to defend it, and Mahron was on his way as well"

"And you think the resistance cell was wiped out?" You ask.

"Or at the very least forced into deep cover" She says. "With the Spire being on the verge of a battle, there should be plenty to report..."

"So their silence means nothing good is happening there" You say. "The Spire must be on lock down"

"Even if it were, my people are crafty. They'd find a way to get a message out to us..." She says.

"If they do, hopefully it doesn't come at the same cost as the one from Kirando..." You say. "That report say anything else?"

"Much of it is old news, like the southern fleet's arrival. It took the messenger some time to reach us" She says.

"Anything we didn't know about?" You ask.

"Well... the giant worm" She says. "They've also closed the harbour now that the Southerners have pulled out, and with the Legion focusing on the Spire there aren't as many forces in Kirando so they're having trouble keeping the populace down"

"You don't think they'd risk a revolt, would they?" You ask. "That could end poorly for them..."

"It will be their choice" She replies.

"Well... if you can somehow get a message in, tell them to be patient. Help is on the way, whether it is the will of Shai Hulud or not" You say. "I'd really hate to get there, only to find that everyone's been massacred"

"They understand that help is coming. My people will urge patience, but if they want to revolt..." She says. "And... what is this Shai Hulud you keep mentioning?"

"I honestly have no idea. But it was the first thing that came to my head when you mentioned the giant worm" You say. "That and spice, for some reason"

"I... see" She says.

"You hear about Graumer?" You ask.

"I have been watching his trial closely" She says. "It is... hard to believe that such things were happening right here"

"I would've doubted it too, had someone told me" You say. "But I found his lab, and buried the deformed skeletons myself"

"Yes that was mentioned..." She says. "Has his execution been decided?"

"Not that I know of. Apparently they wanted to know what I thought" You say. "I said just to get it over with"

"Kind of you" She says.

"Well, a slow and painful death might sound like justice. But it gains us nothing. Hang him, or cut his head off, or however you guys do executions..." You say. "How exactly do you guys usually do executions, anyway?"

"Usually by beheading" She says.

"Alright. Quick. Simple. Then it's done with and we can all move on" You say. "Anything else happening in the country?"

"I've been hearing stirrings among the hunters" She says. "You may know about this already, but much of their number went across the ocean after Miss Lepol was taken"

"I did know that" You say.

"Word is that they've suspended major operations out there, and are bringing the bulk of their forces back" She says. "Nothing is confirmed yet, but that seems to be their intent"

"Well a lot of their best are out there. If they're gonna come in force, that's who they'll bring" You say. "We secure Stella, and then together we can all make the Legion regret ever forming"

"You knew Stella, yes?" She asks.

"Yeah, we were... uhh..."

"Friends... but I guess I did have a bit of a crush on her..." You say. "We met at a pretty interesting time in my life..."

Quria looks curious... Qurious...

You shake your head and give her a bit of detail on how you used to be, and how it was Stella who first taught you the value of cute things, a good hug, and also chocolate.

"She does sound very important to you..." She says.

"Well... I mean... I also kinda think that I could have saved her" You say. "Without their boons, the Legion wouldn't have overrun the city so easily, Stella would be safe, Jade would be alive... but I was relaxing in Leon"

"And you blame yourself" She says.

"I wouldn't put it that way..." You say. "But I will feel better when she's back home safe. For now, I can only trust that the resistance's hands are capable ones"

"Our best are still in Kirando" She says. "She'll be safe until the city is yours. You have my word"

"Thank you, Quria. That means a lot" You say. "Has everything here been good for you?"

"The best accommodations I have had in a very long time" She says. "And quite possibly the best security in the land, the the First Knight, an Akotzal, and miss Pip all under one roof..."

You talk for a bit about her interactions with Pip. Pip doesn't trust her, which she says is fair. She seems quite afraid of Kanzka, and she hasn't met Frederick yet.

"You should take the time" You say. "He's quite pleasant once you get on his good side"

"I understand that you've seen both" She says. "You fought him during the civil war, yes?"

"Just once... well, twice. But only the first one really counted" You say. "Once he realized that he couldn't stop us, and that we weren't about to murder the king, he stopped being so hostile"

"I see..." She says.

"Well anyways. I'm sure you're busy, so I'll let you go" You say. "Keep up the good work, and let me know if you hear anything out of the Spire"

"I will" She says. "Take care of yourself"

You nod to her and then head off, wondering who you should spend some time with next.

You're really starting to feel like there's too many people here, and too little time to spend with them. You actually still haven't seen Fran since you've been back, and you just got that little while with the Devils...

On top of that you've got the molding stuff from Gretchen, and the sooner you get on that, the sooner you can get a solution for poor Alisette's teeth...

And Mom should be coming by at some point to see you before she heads back to the front... and even with all the stuff you need to do here, you still feel like your place is out there.

...

You shake your head. The army can handle whatever's thrown its way while you get everything in order and get a little better at what you do.

With that in mind, it's time to-

Yeah, definitely better to get this business with Alisette out of the way first. The mold will take time to dry, then you need to make a model, then you need a second mold of a regular mouth, then you need to figure out what to do with all that...

Step one is finding Alisette, so you get Coral to show you the way. She's up in one of the playrooms with Violet and Lena, who are talking while Alisette is colouring something...

"Hey" You say as you walk in. "I got the stuff from my friend. Is Alisette feeling up for some molding?"

Violet relays this to Alisette, who looks apprehensive as she replies.

"Something wrong?" You ask.

"She wants to know what it'll be like" Violet says.

"Well it won't be painful" You say. "I'll just need to keep the stuff in your mouth long enough to get an impression of your teeth to work with. It might taste funny, but it's not harmful"

Violet relays this again. Alisette still looks like she doesn't really want to do it, but she agrees to. You assure her that a couple minutes of funny tasting molding paste is a fine trade off when the alternative could be a few years of constant tongue biting.

You, the kid, and the maids make your way to your room. Once there you start filling the container, explaining each step through Violet to help Alisette understand. She's a smart kid, so she gets it prety quickly.

Once everything is ready, you sit down and put the kid in your lap...

"Now, say 'ahhhh'" You say, holding the little paste container in front of her.

Alisette trembles, opening her mouth slightly. "O-ooooooooooh" She says.

...

"I need you to open wide" You say.

She starts shaking a bit harder as Violet relays that for you, squeezing her eyes shut and looking down so you can't see her face.

Alisette is afraid. Understandable given the situation, and you don't think it's directed at you specifically. But you're just trying to help...

You take a breath, set the container aside, and pull her into a hug. "Hey now. It's okay" You say. Violet translates, but the things you're saying are more about tone than message. "I promise it won't hurt at all"

Alisette replies through Violet. "She says she knows" Violet says. "But she's still scared"

"I would be too, if I'd gone through what you did" You say. "But I'll be here through the whole thing, and it'll be over before you know it"

Alisette asks if Alice can be here with her, and if someone can bring her blanket.

"Sure thing... Lena, would you mind?" You ask.

"No problem" Lena says. "I'll be right back"

Lena leaves, and you ask Violet about the blanket.

"Oh it's something Alice made for her when she arrived" She says. "We've made a habit of making sure every kid has something that's theirs, since just about everything else here is shared"

"Makes sense" You say. "I think... does it help them?"

"Keeps fights to a minimum" She says.

Lena returns with Alice, and a little, dark blue blanket with a moon and stars stitched in.

You hand Alisette off to Alice, who puts the little gator in her lap, wraps her in the blanket, holds her tightly with her top set of arms, while her bottom set reaches under the blanket to hold her hands.

Looks like Lena must've briefed her on the situation on the way here...

"Okay. Now say ahh?" You say.

"Mmm... mma-aaahhh" Alisette says, reluctantly but eventually opening up.

"Good girl" You say, stroking her cheek with one hand while your other goes for the mold. It's gotten a tad dry while you've been working at this, but it's all still workable. "Now keep it open just like that. If it's too much just spit it out, okay? There's always more paste"

Alisette nods, and you put the container in, and up...

>1/2
>>
You, Alice, Violet, and Lena all keep the comfort and reassurance coming while you wait for the mold to set.

...

There's gotta be a quicker way to do this. Maybe you should talk to Emi. There could be some way to just suck the moisture out and quick-dry this thing...

After about 10 minutes, the paste has dried to the point where it'll keep its form and you pull it out to show Alisette.

"There. First one down" You say. "See?"

"First?" Alisette asks, looking uncomfortable.

Violet grimaces, then explains that you need both her top and bottom teeth.

Alisette trembles a little, then exchanges a few words with Violet and Alice. Then she squeezes her eyes shut. "Okay" She says, as she opens her mouth again.

Oh... she's just goin' right for it. You figured it'd be a bit longer.

You scramble to get the second paste container ready to go before her courage fades, still taking a little time to make sure it's all good before getting started.

"Okay. Number two. Here it comes" You say, as you put the second one in. "You're doing really well, Alisette. Just stay just like that. It'll actually be over after this, I promise"

"Uh-hay" Alisette replies.

You keep up the kind words in between spit-balling ideas with the maids, and asking if any of the other kids might be a good fit for the second mold.

By the time you're done, you've got a few candidates. You pull the mold off and give Alisette the good news that she's all done now. No more weird mouth stuff... at least until you have a working solution.

Alisette looks happy to hear that, and also put off by the odd taste the paste left in her mouth...

"That was such a good job, Alisette" You say. "Why don't we treat you to something?"

Alisette tilts her head and says something. "What kind of treat?" Violet translates.

"I dunno. It's your treat. You pick" You say. "Whatever you want. If we can get it or make it, we will"

Alisette thinks on that for a minute before replying. "Brillouche?" She asks.

You wait for Violet or Alice to translate, but nothing happens.

"What did she say?" You ask.

"Oh, that's just what it's called. There's no Lubrian word for it, sir" Alice says. "Brillouche. It's a kind of dessert they do out west"

"Okay... can we make it?" You ask.

"I don't think Patty's done it for a long time, but I know it's in her cook book" Violet says. "It's... kind of a strange mix of flavours and ingredients. Not everybody likes it..."

"Well I said she could have what she wants... and if Patty can make it, then let's go see her" You say.

Violet relays this to Alisette, who looks ecstatic. The 5 of you get up and head out, with the kid practically skipping along, wearing her little starry sky blanket like a cape.

"So what exactly is this thing anyway?" You ask Alice.

"They're... like little chocolate cakes" She replies. "But the cake is made with beats, and they're filled with a kind of bean paste. It's sweet like cake, but there's a few other flavours there that are not to everyone's taste"

"Thinking of having some yourself, sir?" Violet asks.

You shrug. "Might as well try it" You say. "Can't be that bad"

"We'll have Patty make a few of them then. I know a few of the girls like that stuff too" Alice says.

You get to the kitchen and tell Patty what's going on. She looks happy, and says it's been so long since she's gotten to make something like this.

It's just a weird kind of cake, isn't it? You don't see what the big deal is...

Patty offers to teach Alisette how it's made, to which the girl happily obliges. Violet sticks around to continue translating, but Lena and Alice both have other things to do.

You offer to help out as well and after assuring her it's no trouble, Patty puts you to work crushing the beets. Meanwhile her and Alisette start mixing the other things.

Patty seems pretty god with kids. You're about to ask her about it, but Violet stops you. The slime grabs a sign and writes something on it before holding it up. It says 'Family in Johnston. Long gone. Do not ask'.

You nod your head, and decide to let Patty enjoy this. You don't think you've heard a single happy story from anyone you've talked to since you arrived here. It's starting to get on your nerves. All you want to do is learn more about people, and it always ends in tears somehow.

"Whoa there, sir" Patty says, taking your hands away from the beets. "I think they're crushed enough. Keep goin' and you're gonna break the counter"

"Oh... sorry" You say. "What's next?"

>1/2
>>
You get to work making the bean paste, while the girls finish up the dough. Once everything is done Patty puts it all together to make about ten little chocolate cakes filled with paste. Then she puts them all in the oven.

Alisette bounces happily in front of the oven as she watches them bake. Patty and Violet manage to calm her down enough that she'll come and sit.

"So why the sudden interest in Brillouche?" Patty asks.

"Doing some stressful work with the kid" You say, putting a hand on Alisette's head. "She asked for it as a reward"

"Ahhhh... pretty fancy tastes there, little one" Patty says.

"How so?" You ask.

"Brillouche is a high class kind of dessert" She says. "The beans in the paste are difficult to acquire, since they come from the southern continent"

"That's the one with the elves, right?" You ask.

She nods.

"I've heard they're pretty hostile. I hope they're friendlier when I go down there" You say.

"Why go down there?" She asks.

"Ruins. I plan to visit all of them some day" You say. "I've hit one already. Got something important, so after I've finished with the Legion, it's onto the rest"

Patty nods. "Yearnin' for some adventure?" She asks.

You shrug. "There's just some stuff that I need in them. That's all" You say. "So the kid's high class, huh?"

"We kinda knew that, since she's so well educated" Violet says. "She also speaks a... fancier version of Antolian. If that makes sense"

"Is it anything like the difference between the accents that nobles use compared to the common ones?" You ask.

"It's more like... normal Antolian has a lot of 'slang'-like stuff in it, while the fancier version still uses the original words and pronounciations" Violets says.

"So... old old Antolian?" You ask.

"Pretty much, yeah" Violet says.

Alisette asks Violet something, and you realize she hasn't been translating any of this for her. Violet replies, then Alisette says something else, then Violet bursts out laughing.

"What?" You ask.

"She wanted to know what we were talking about. I told her it was about how well she speaks, and she pretty much said 'I ain't not speakin' good'" Violet says, giving the kid a hug. "Soooo cute"

You lean onto your elbow and watch as the slime tries to engulf Alisette. "We still don't know where she came from?" You ask.

"We know she wasn't in Riverhold for very long" Violet says. "She told us they caught her while she was swimming up river, a couple weeks back"

"Just before we invaded..." You say. "How'd she end up in the river?"

Violet shrugs.

"Where does that river go, anyway?" You ask, as you pull your map out of your back pocket and unfold it on the table.

"Wow... you just carry a map around on you?" Violet asks.

"It's a hunter's map" You say, smoothing it out and putting your finger on Riverhold. Alisette looks on curiously. "So Riverhold is here... and that river goes a lot of places"

"That's why there's a fortress on it" Patty says.

Alisette asks something. "She wants to know what all the little markings are for" Violet says.

"Well these ones are cities in Lubars... this X here is an old ruined city, these 7 markings are all the elemental ruins, and this one's crossed off because I beat it already..." You say, pointing out each place in turn. "These spots are the cities across the ocean, and this is where we are now"

Alisette points to Lutain. "This here?" She asks.

"Yep. Lutain" You say.

Alisette points to the Howling tower and says something to Violet.

"She wants to know more about that one" Violet says.

"Oh... well... how much time until the cakes are done?" You ask.

"Long enough for a story" Patty replies.

"Works for me" You say. "So the place is called the Howling Tower..."

>1/2
>>
By the time you're done your story, the cakes are done. You didn't tell the whole story, of course. A couple things in there not quite fit for kid's ears.

Alisette looks on with excitement as Patty pulls everything out of the oven, barely containing herself when she's told to wait until they're cool. Which is something that's more important for her, since her teeth are so sensitive right now.

"So you fought some kind of... monster?" Violet asks.

"It called itself a deviant soul, and it didn't act like a monster, nor have I heard of any mosters with power like that" You say. "I was lucky that I could trick it out of my friend, otherwise that could have ended badly..."

Alisette asks another question. "She wants to know if that friend is here" Violet says.

"No. She's still in Riverhold" You say. "She was with me when I first found you though, and it was a friend of hers who brought you back here"

Alisette nods, then goes back to staring at the cakes. As if her attention could make them cool faster.

"They smell good" You say.

"They'll taste different" Violet says.

"How do things taste to you, anyway?" You ask. "Genuine question"

"Same as they do to you, I think" She says. "Slimes have all the same taste stuff that everybody else does. It's just put together differently"

"Neat" You say.

You talk about a few different things while the cakes cool. Like how you got a hunter's map, some other stuff about the ruins, more details on slime anatomy...

A little timer next to the oven dings, and Alisette starts bouncing as Patty goes over to grab the now hopefully cool cakes...

"Alright. Cake time~" Patty says.
>>
Calling it a bit early here, since something came up.

Next thread will be tomorrow, starting around 7pm EST.

I'll be around for a while longer, so feel free to leave questions and suggestions.

Patty puts a Brillouche cake in front of both you and Alisette, setting the rest aside for others who might want one.

Alisette quickly cuts a piece off with her fork and puts it in her mouth, smiling happily as she carefully chews it. After she swallows she does an excited little shake, then goes in for forkful.

It looks like she's really enjoying this, and you know that kids are notoriously picky. So how bad could it be?

You take a bit off and put it in your mouth. It's... interesting. You can definitely taste the chocolate, and the bean stuff is pretty sweet. But there's an odd texture and a strange aftertaste that make you understand why some people don't like this.

Finishing it all off without making a face is difficult, but you manage. Next time you'll just pass on this. You don't think Alisette will mind. More cakes for her.

When it's all done, Alisette's spirits seem to be lifted and Violet takes her off to language class. She stops to give you a big hug before she goes, practically skipping as she follows Violet away.

"Pretty interesting face you were making there. Did you like it?" Patty asks.

"It was... interesting" You say.

Patty laughs. "It's not for everyone" She says. "Thank you for helping, by the way"

You shrug. "I was here. Might as well put my hands to work" You say. "No more mice issues?"

"Not today" She says. "This happens around winter time, when it gets cold enough that they seek shelter"

"What did you guys do with that one from yesterday?" You ask.

"The kids decided to keep it as a pet" She says. "Got a cage and everything... I just hope it doesn't escape"

"Neat" You say. "I've never thought about having a pet..."

"What about your sprite?- oh, sorry. Looks like that made her mad" Patty says.

You look down to see Coral poking out of your collar with her cheeks puffed out, so you scratch her head. "Coral's more like a partner, or a guide. I'd never be able to find anyone without her" You say. "But anyways, you've probably got work to do so I'll get out of your hair"

She gives you a polite bow. You consider where all your friends would be as you head out. Daria should be in her classes right now, and it's safe to assume the others are up practicing magic...

You still haven't seen Fran yet, so you ask Coral where to find her and get moving.

She's in her room reading over something when you get there, so you knock on the doorframe to get her attention. She looks kinda tired...

"Hey Fran. Long time no see" You say.

"Sorry. I've been meaning to come say hi, but between this, and the girls' education I've been very busy" She says.

"What is that, anyway?" You ask.

She holds it up. "Transcripts of the old books you guys found in the vault" She says. "Absolutely fascinating stuff..."

"Have you been reading through those all this time?" You ask.

"I'm a scholar of history. These are intact records from over a thousand years ago, gathered from all over the place" She says. "I'd thank the old baron for acquiring them all, if I didn't know why he was doing it..."

You tilt your head, and Fran grabs one of the books, flipping to a page and showing it to you.

It's a drawing of a man and woman, only the woman looks the way Madelaine does.

"I can see how that would fit his interests..." You say. "Anything fit yours?"

"It all fits mine. I'm finding several huge differences between our time and theirs" She says. "Outside of certain technological developments, there were no demons, no barriers, and no hunters back then, just as there are no tyrants now..."

"According to Lyvia, demons were a product of the Black God" You say. "All of this stuff predates its arrival by a little bit"

"I'm surprised there's no record of that..." She says.

"It must've been a pretty turbulent time... am I using that word right? Turbulent?" You ask.

She nods.

"By the time things settled down enough for anyone to record it, accounts would be all over the place. And it would be easy for someone reading them a couple hundred years down the line to mistake them as fiction" You say. "Which is why the story of Caian has so many versions..."

"But no hunters, though..." She says. "I wonder why. It's not like there were no monsters"

"They had the Tyrants. Human civilization was built on Titania and Vyula's territory" You say. "Perhaps other monsters stayed away because of that"

"And when they all became women, people needed a way to fight for themselves..." She says. "And since hunters kill any strong monsters, no further Tyrants could grow"

"Except across the ocean" You say. "The Kings out there must have grown between now and the change, as any Tyrants who existed over there would have died of old age"

"Assuming they can die of old age" She says. "We only know of Lyvia, who was frozen, Titania, who sealed a Deviant Soul, and Vyula... who may have died of old age. Never mind"

"Perhaps not" You say. "I've got a running theory that Lady Namaki is somehow connected to Vyula. Nothing concrete yet"

"It would explain her power..." She says. "I am finding it fascinating reading about the social hierarchy as well. Did you know that the average peasant couldn't use magic?"

"I figured they just didn't take the time" You say.

She shakes her head. "They actually couldn't" She says. "Something about their souls didn't let them use spells, no matter how hard they tried"

"That's... very strange" You say.

"The machines they built are quite impressive though" She says, flipping back through her book to a page with some diagrams on it. "Not a replacement or a match for magic, but still quite inventive"

"Speaking of magic, where are the kids?" You ask.

"Upstairs with their sister" She says. "Why?"

"Sit tight... we need to talk" You say.

>1/2

You take the time to explain the grievances of your staff, and how you've seen that the devils have been dying for some attention.

"I get that being a scholar is what you always wanted, but you really can't just forget about the kids..." You say.

"I... didn't realize" She says. "I thought they were fine with Cheska looking after them... but you're right. They are mine, and I shouldn't be passing my responsibilities off onto my sister"

"Now I'm not saying you should drop this and give them all your time. Just maybe, adjust the balance in their favour a bit" You say. "They're pretty independent as far as kids go, but they still need you"

Fran goes to close her book, but you stop her.

"After dinner. I think magic practice is a good place for them to be right now, unless you want to go teach" You say.

"Yes. Of course..." She says. "If you're sticking around, I'd love to hear more about Queen Lyvia from you"

You figure you'll sit down for a bit. You're pretty into this stuff as well, and Fran is really the only one here who you can talk about it with.

Telling her all about Lyvia takes some time. There isn't much that Lyvia hasn't told you, but there are some questions that Fran asks which you can't answer. Stuff like the sort of weapons the humans who tried to depose her used, and one that really catches you off guard...

"What manner of spell could permanently freeze someone like that?" She asks. "Kukuri must have been powerful, but I've known some very powerful mages who couldn't match that kind of strength"

"Perhaps it's not a question of strength" You say. "Maybe it was worked, like stone and wood can be"

"Ice working..." Fran says. "Could be worth looking into. Perhaps if Emi has some time..."

"Now it's time for my questions" You say. "Did you find any mention of soul in there? Its use, whether by people or machine?"

She shakes her head. "Nothing" She says. "Even back then there was no one like you until Caian and Malieria showed up, and the Chaos Engine itself is a pretty recent invention..."

"Dang. Ah well" You say. "I'll leave you to it then"

"Thanks... I'll see you at dinner" She says.

"And be sure to get some sleep, alright? Those are some pretty big bags under your eyes..." You say.

"Old habits..." She says. "I'd always be up late when I used to study, because Kieve was always up all night"

"That makes a lot of sense..." You say. "But Kieve's not here, so you should keep a better schedule"

"I'll try" She says.

"No try. I'm gonna send one of the girls to make sure you're in bed by 10" You say. "See you in a bit"

"Wh-... you'll send- 10? Hey! Don't just walk away!" Fran says.

You laugh out loud as you head out, figuring now's a good time to see how you're cousin's doing...

>1/2

You find Daria sitting in the dining hall a bit early, looking bored but attentive as an older guy talks about something.

Listening for a bit, you realize this is etiquette class. Something Daria is sorely behind on... and you're kinda with her there.

The old dude is talking about... proper fork placements and usage order, and some other shit that you don't think you have the patience for...

Daria does seem to be taking it all in though, as she answer the last few questions correctly, before the old dude heads out. He bows to you at the door, and you step aside so he can leave.

"Cousin!" Daria says, the energy returning to her body as she hops out of her chair.

"Enjoying etiquette class?" You ask, catching her as she jumps in for a hug.

"Bluhhhhhh" She says. "It's sooo boring but I have to know it so people don't snicker behind my back"

"Sounds horrible" You say.

"How come you don't have to learn this stuff? You're royalty too" She says.

"The perks of being super powerful" You say. "I don't think anyone would be brave enough to laugh about me, even if they thought I couldn't hear"

"But I'm gonna be the queeeeeeeeeeen" She says. "Can't I just ban all this etiquette stuff?"

"Can't be that bad" You say.

"It's boooooring" She says. "Why do these people have so many forks..."

"I'm sure you'll get it eventually" You say, rubbing her head. "Where's Val?"

"She's with Hella" She says. "She was getting really fussy and I didn't want to interrupt my classes"

"Are they done for the day?" You ask.

She nods.

"Well then let's go see her" You say. "You look like you could use a break"

She nods again, so you hook your arm under hers and head off. Along the way you ask about the other classes, and aside from etiquette they don't all sound so bad. Her only real complaint about them is that the teachers aren't as interesting as Frederick was.

"That's because Frederick would stop whenever he had a relevant story" You say. "Not a more interesting teacher, but definitely a much better story teller"

"I like his stories..." She says.

"So go see him. I'm sure he'd be happy to share" You say. "He's always here"

When you reach the practice room, everyone's kinda grouped up. Monique is with Cheska and Lily doing fire magic, while Hella and Daisy are with Emi and Pip learning some binding moves. Liz and Val are snuggling on a couch that someone brought up here, and you see Hella looking back at them every so often.

You don't see Ilica and Vivi though. Maybe they stepped out for a bit.

You head over to Cheska and Lily, who are passing a fireball back and forth. You aren't sure how that will help them, so you go to Monique...

"What are they doing?" You ask.

"Passing" She says. "Catching a fireball and throwing it back is pretty hard. You have to 'claim' the fire without letting it burn out"

"Claim...?" You ask. "I'm not very well versed in fire magic"

"Fire magic has this weird 'ownership' thing that other magics don't really use. Have you ever seen someone 'snuff' a flame?" You ask.

"Yes, I think. Cheska did it to Lily once" You say.

"She could do that because she took control over Lily's fire" Monique says. "A fire mage can will any fire to be their own, but claiming a magically fuelled fire without letting it burn out is difficult. You have to start adding your own fuel before it's fully yours"

"I think I get it" You say. "So to 'catch' the fire, Cheska has to claim it, keep it fuelled, then send it back?"

Monique nods. "Pretty standard pair exercise for aspiring fire mages, as it teaches both claiming ownership, and managing a steady fuel stream" She says.

You watch them toss it back and forth a few more times, watching the fireball carefully. It's pretty easy to pic out when the fire changes hands, as it either flares up or dies down a bit.

Both devils are pretty sweaty from concentrating, and after a few more tosses Lily fails the catch and gets hit. Cheska snuffs the fireball quickly, but Lily's sleeve still catches. It's only just started burning when the flame comes right off and floats over to Monique...

"I think that's enough for now" The Cyclops says.

"Yeah, I'm with- Yuu?" Cheska says. "When did you get here?"

Lily smiles, then runs up and jumps into your arms. "Did you see me? Was I good?" She asks.

"Of course you were" You say. "And I just got here a second ago"

"Oh" She says.

"How's practice going?" You ask.

"Ugh, I need a bath..." Cheska says, wiping the sweat off her forehead with the sort-of hand on her wing. "Can't believe I can torch entire fields in one go, but playing catch with a fireball is makin' me sweat"

"It's just a gap between your power and how much control you have over it" Monique says. "Power wise, you're easily the strongest fire mage I've ever met. But because of that you never had to learn the control that weaker people need"

"Thanks for the com...pliment?" Cheska says, unsure if that was a compliment or not.

"You're welcome" Monique says. "And don't worry. Once you've got this, we'll move onto keeping ownership of your fires, then we can get into the good stuff"

"Funny how I've never had ownership issues before now..." Cheska says.

"Again, it's because of your power" Monique says. "The larger and hotter the fire is, the harder it is to claim. Especially if you happen to be in said fire..."

"Yeah... heh heh... that makes sense" Cheska says. "Anyways. I'm covered in sweat, so I'm gonna take the implet and go wash off. You're welcome to join"

"I already did that today" You say, turning to see Lily with a bad kid of grin. "And don't even think about rubbing your sweat on me to make me join in"

"Aww..." Lily says.

You hand her off to Cheska. "Now go on. You can hang out with me at dinner" You say.

"Kaaaay" Lily says, as Cheska's tail takes hers and they head off. You guess that's the Devil version of holding hands...

"They're kinda cute together" Monique says.

"They're pretty cute apart too" You say. "Speaking of cute. Do you know where Ilica and Vivian are? I figured they'd be here"

Monique shakes her head. "Miss Ilica left the manor a couple hours ago to visit Priestess Lianna. She said she'd be there most of the night" She says. "Apparently she's been meaning to do that since she arrived"

"Oh" You say. "Well she picked a heck of a day for it. I hope she didn't have trouble getting through the snow..."

You look over and see that binding class is still well underway. Meanwhile Daria has taken over baby duty, and is currently playing with Val and Liz...

"Did she know Lianna when she was here?" You ask.

"Everyone knew Lianna, pretty much" Monique says. "Graumer didn't particularly like her, so she couldn't come here unless he was away... and whenever that happened we would invite her for supper"

"Okay. It did sound like everyone was pretty friendly with her" You say. "Still Ilica never really mentioned it..."

"Might have slipped her mind" Monique says. "I wonder why she didn't say anything about going over earlier. If we'd had time we would have invited the priestess here"

"Ilica probably wanted to see her privately" You say.

"I wonder why... she doesn't seem to be bothered by anything" Monique says.

"Doesn't mean nothing's bothering her" You say. "Could be coming back here reminded her of her old family. Could be nothing, and she just wanted to catch up"

"I forgot that she had a family before..." Monique says.

"When she gets back I'll see if she wants to talk about it" You say. "If not. Well... I won't push"

Your focus is drawn to the magic practice by the sound of Hella suddenly screaming. You see her being held upside down in the air, arms and legs all held up by black tendrils.

Daisy is jumping around, her arms held up in a victorious pose... and she's not focusing on her spell, as Emi is urging her to do.

"One moment please..." You say to Monique.

You walk over to where the tendrils are coming out of the ground, arriving just as they lose their strength, break, and drop Hella into your waiting arms.

"See this is why we told you to focus" Emi says.

"I dunno. Looks like it ended pretty well for her there" Pip says. "Nice catch Yuuster"

"Thanks" You say with a chuckle. "You okay?"

Hella looks at you with wide eyes and red cheeks. "Uhh... m-maybe" She says.

"You still need to focus" Emi says.

"Don't worry! I'll focus this time" Daisy says, holding her arms out as they turn black...

You look down and see little black pools forming on the ground around you.

"Not nearly quick enough to take me, Daisy" You say, focusing energy into your face, and blowing a disruptor at the little devil.

It connects and shuts down the tendril spell Daisy was casting, leaving her feeling strange and confused. She tries a few more times, but it always takes a few seconds for the disruptor's effects to wear off.

You put Hella back on her feet, and go over to Daisy. "But if it's a bind-off you want..." You say, picking her up and squeezing her. "I win"

"No fair..." She says, pouting. "You cheated"

"And trying to get me while I was carrying Hella was fair play?" You ask, shifting her into a better carrying position and kising her on the cheek when she doesn't reply. "Save the underhanded tactics for actual fights, okay?"

"Okay..." She says. "I would've got you too..."

"I'm much harder to tie up than Hella is. Trust me" You say. "But still, that was pretty good. A little work on your speed and concentration will make you a force to be reckoned with"

"You think so?" Daisy asks.

"Of course" You say. "How's the other side going. Practice coming along okay, Hella?"

"She's never worked with magic before, and it's not comin' as naturally to her as it is to Daisy" Pip says. "But it's comin' along. I think her biggest issue is still her unwillingness to hurt people"

You turn to Hella. "I thought that's why you were learning a binding spell in the first place" You say.

"I know. But what if I squeeze too hard?" Hella asks.

"She isn't aiming these at Daisy, is she?" You ask.

"Oh, shit no" Pip says. "Her target's been me. Goal is to bind, lift, and hold. Daisy almost got it there"

"I got excited..." Daisy says. "It won't happen next time"

"Well we'll see... tomorrow. Right now I'm starvin'. Food sound good to everyone?" Pip asks, continuing when there's no objections. "Alright. Let's go eat"

Cheska and Lily are already waiting in the dining room when you arrive, hair still wet from their bath. Cheska is trying to write something with her wing-hand, while Lily's happily doodling away.

"Trying to make the new arms work?" You ask Cheska.

"It's much harder than it looks" She says. "It's like writing with your... I guess you don't really have an off-hand..."

You peek over at what she's writing. "Writing exercises?" You ask. "Doesn't look too different from your normal writing to me- ow, ow!"

Cheska pinches you in the side with her tail. "Don't be an ass" She says.

"You said a bad word!" Daisy says.

"I'm 17, I'm allowed to swear" Cheska says.

"Miss Lena says a foul mouth like that will scare away all the guys" Daisy says.

"If a foul mouth scares 'em away, they weren't ready to handle me in the first place" Cheska says. "And just when the heck did Lena say this?"

Daisy clams up when she realizes she's said too much, and Cheska reaches over with her wings to take her from you, putting her in her lap.

"You were seeping around, weren't you?" Cheska asks.

"N-no" Daisy says. "I was uhh... helping"

"And if I went and asked Miss Lena about this..." Cheska says.

"Alright, they were makin' cookies and I wanted one" Daisy says. "But I couldn't get one or get out without them seein' me..."

Cheska sighs and stands up. "Alright. We'll be back. This one's gotta go apologize for eavesdropping" She says.

Cheska is pretty unique in this regard. She is the only person with usable digits on her wings as well as regular human arms. Other girls with usable digits on their wings have them instead of arms, like bat girls and wyverns.

I should also point out that she has 7 limbs, not 6.

>writing

Even within her own species? Or is that just people we know personally?
>>
>>3030827
She only grew these wings after becoming human again. Those unique circumstances lead to her unique body. You know of no other type of girl with workable wing-limbs. The only other girls with 4 working arms are girls like Alice, who just have 4 regular arms.
>>
"Good luck with that" You say.

"I might need it. If she goes down I can't bring her back up..." Cheska says.

"Want me to come along?" You ask.

"Hey, if you're offerin'..." She says.

You shrug and head with Cheska as she goes to find Lena, letting everyone know you'll be right back and putting Hella in charge of Lily for the time being. Shouldn't be too difficult. Lily looks like she's really into whatever she's drawing.

"So the wings can work like hands?" You ask.

"Yup. Fran said to do the writing exercises with them so I can get used to manipulating things, just like little devils do with their tails" Cheska says. "I've also been doing some weightlifting with them to strengthen them for flying"

"They do look more muscular than when I left for the march" You say.

She looks proud to hear that. "Still a ways to go. They'll have to get pretty beefy for me to fly normally" She says. "I think I'll just stick to using magic to get lift. Keep my girlish figure, y'know?"

"Never thought I'd hear you show concern over that..." You say.

"I actually have to work at it now that I don't have the whole demon thing keeping me looking good" She says. "Pays off though. Last time I went out on town I noticed a few people lookin'... but it could have been the fact that they'd never seen a winged devil before"

You put an arm over her shoulder. "You are one of a kind, Cheska" You say.

Cheska smiles and rests her head on your shoulder.

"Y-yuu? What?" Cheska asks.

"Yes. That's exactly what we were about to do" You say, giving Cheska a wink. "Cheska and I were going to start kissing you. Because we love you"

Daisy looks worried, but she can't wriggle free of Cheska's arms as you both shower her cheeks with kisses. You continue through Daisy's protests, stopping only when you think she's had enough.

"This is cruel and unusual punishment" Daisy says, as she buries her head in Cheska's chest.

"Aww, that wasn't punishment, Daisy" Cheska says, hugging her niece with her hands, wings, and tail. "And where the heck did you learn those words from?"

"N-nowhere" Daisy says.

Cheska rolls her eyes. "We're gonna have to start keeping a much closer eye on you, blueberry" She says.

"N-no you don't" Daisy says.

"Well then you'd better start behaving" Cheska says. "Or Yuu and I are gonna start back up again. And this time we're not gonna stop"

"Nooooooooo..." Daisy says.

You chuckle and ruffle Daisy's hair. "Maybe we'll stick to a more traditional punishment... like apologizing to anyone who you've spied on" You say.

When you find Lena you manage to coax a halfhearted apology out of Daisy, then a real apology at the threat of more kissing.

You appear to have found Daisy's Achilles' Heel... whatever that means. You should remember to use this sparingly, as it won't work if she comes to enjoy it.

"Oh, it's fine" Lena says. "Didn't even know she was there"

"Still not good of her to be sneaking around like that" Cheska says.

"Well next time she should just come into the kitchen normally" Lena says, patting Daisy on the head. "I'll be happy to share some cookies with her if she asks like a good little girl"

"Hear that, Daisy?" You ask.

"Can I have one now?" Daisy asks, her eyes full of hope.

"No, there's none left now" Lena says apologetically. "Next time"

"Aww..." Daisy says.

You let Lena get back to work, as Cheska twines tails with Daisy. "So, anybody else you need to apologize to?" Cheska asks.

"Uhh... maybe" Daisy asks.

You put a hand on Cheska's shoulder. "We can wring the full list out of her after dinner" You say.

"Good nicknames" You say.

"Thank you" She replies.

"So did you know about Ilica's trip out?" You ask.

"To see the priestess? Yeah" Cheska says. "She left just after lunch. No clue what she's been talkin about, but she's been there since"

"That early, huh?" You say.

"Probably spent like an hour trudging through the snow" Cheska says. "No clue how she does it without shoes, but she seemed pretty confident"

"Her feet are pretty well insulated" You say, pulling out your notepad.

"What's that for?" Cheska asks.

"Offering her a ride home for her and Vivi, if she wants it" You say, jotting down a quick note telling Ilica to keep Coral around and send her back when she's ready to leave if she wants you to pick her up. "Least I can do"

"Well the least you can do is actually nothing" Cheska says.

You shrug as you send Coral off. "As a friend it's the least I can do" You say.

"Found her what now?" Pip asks.

"Achilles' Heel" You say. "Like a weak point"

"Ahh..." Pip says. "Why didn't you just say that?"

"Because Achilles' Heel sounds cooler" You say.

"Do you know where that term comes from?" Emi asks.

"I think Achilles was a dude who was invincible because his mom dunked him in some kinda magic river" You say. "But his heel was vulnerable 'cause that's where his mom held him as she did the dunking"

"I see" Emi says. "You usually don't know quite so much about these odd things when you say them"

You shrug. "Sometimes the weird term comes with an explanation, sometimes it doesn't" You say. "It's a bit of a crap shoot"

Emi looks curious, but Pip stops her. "I don't think we want to know about that one" She says. "Got any plans after this? Mimi and I were gonna do a bit more magic stuff. Advanced practice, for those already well versed in the art"

You nod. "So why the sudden interest in practice?" You ask.

"I don't get to practice with people on my level very often" Pip says. "Takin' the opportunity while it's there"

You turn to Emi.

"It's the same for me..." She says. "I don't even use it in fights all that often either..."

"I was actually kinda wondering about that" You say. "You always avoid fights, but I don't think I've ever seen you lose"

"It is pretty common for a high born lady to have a couple dedicated servants. Ones that'll take care of mundane tasks for them" Emi says.

"Sometimes I wonder if some of high society's fashion was made just to give those girls work" Pip says. "The ridiculous dresses, the hairstyles, the makeup..."

"It's not so bad down there..." Emi says. "Piru and Rin also did double duty as bodyguards"

"You did say they were strong" Pip says.

"Moreso than I am, but most of my studies went toward healing" Emi says.

"So you never knew how much ass you kicked?" You ask.

"I was not aware, no" Emi says.

"Huh..." You say. "Do boy nobles get handmaidens too?"

"Not really..." Emi says.

"You literally have a house full of maids at your beck and call, dude" Pip says. "You want handmaidens? Just appoint a few"

You consider that, as food is brought in. Lola sounds a bit like a handmaid. She gets you up in the morning, sets out your clothes, does... other things.

...

Okay, maybe not.

You set your sights on your food and start eating, wanting to see what 'advanced magic practice' is like...

When dinner is finished, Cheska takes the devils up to their mom, Hella and Daria head their own way, and you go back up to the 'training room'.

"So what are we doing now?" You ask.

"Duelling" Pip replies. "We've all got a pretty decent amount of firepower, and pretty good defenses. So launch your spells, block theirs, don't break anything"

"Who's going first?" Emi asks.

Pip shrugs. "I dunno. Your house Yuyu. You decide"

"I'll let you guys duke it out for my entertainment" You say.

"Why did you have to put it like that..." Pip says.

"Let the games begin!" You say, retreating to the far wall as a stinger of light sent by Pip chases you.

Once you're safely out of range, and prepared to guard yourself against any stray attacks, the two of them take their places.

After a quick 3 count, they both charge their spells.

Pip's goes off first: a simple burst of light meant to blind. It works, and Emi's followup goes wide. Then Pip launches a second spell, a beam that Emi doesn't see coming. It hits home, striking her in the stomach.

"One point for me~" Pip says.

"That was dirty..." Emi says, rubbing her eyes.

"Dirty tricks are how I roll, Mimi. Not everybody fights fair" Pip replies.

"Fine then" Emi says.

Round 2 starts once Emi can see again. This time she strikes first, icing the floor so that Pip loses her footing. Pip's aim is still true, but Emi's defense is ready this time.

As Pip struggles to stand back up, Emi drenches her with a water cannon.

"That's a point for me" Emi says, draining the water out of Pip's clothes and getting rid of the ice to make things fair again.

"Damn... how do you keep your balance on this?" Pip asks.

"Larger base" Emi replies, pointing to her tail.

"Hrrmm..." Pip says. "Alright. Match point. Winner gets to face lord smug over there"

"I am not smug" You say.

Pip pokes her tongue out at you, as the two of them take their positions again.

This time when the round starts they both launch powerful offensive spells at each other. Each expecting their opponent to guard. Each completely wrong...

They both go down.

"Ow" Pip says. "I lost..."

"No... I think we both lost..." Emi says.

"Fuck" Pip says. "So who got hit first, Yuyu? You've got the eyes for that sort of thing. I wanna know who gets to wipe that grin off your face"

"I guess that's true..." Emi says.

"Which means it's time" You say, stepping forward and cracking your knuckles. "2 on 1. Let's go"

Pip smiles. "You sure about that, buddy?" She asks. "I know you're cookin' with a big fire there, but..."

"Let's just see how it goes" You say. "You won't overwhelm me with power, so you'll have to get creative"

"Alright" Pip says. "Just one thing: no disruptors. In a spell duel those things are straight unfair"

"Fine. No disruptors" You say. "Any other rules?"

"I think that's it" Pip says. "We wanna bet anything on this?"

"I'm not much of a gambler..." Emi says.

"Hmm... how about this?" Pip says. "Loser feeds the winners their dessert"

"I don't think that's-"

"I accept" You say. "Though I would've worded that 'losers feed the winner his dessert', but whatever floats your boat..."

"But I didn't-"

"Alright. Everybody ready?" Pip asks. "3... 2... 1... Let's go!"

>>
>>3031403

>>
>>3031416
Chain Flares have a limit on the amount of weight they can pull/force they can resist, and going over that will break them. Making them stronger isn't really a priority, as they do their job just fine now.
>>
Could we pull enough soul into the room and just leave it there and have it create an area of low or no mana meaning we win the duel as they can’t cast no more?
>>
>>3031796
That'd be interesting to try. Definitely better to try here than in the middle of a battle. That said I'm not sure if soul and Mana work like that.
>>
>>3032076
We should be careful with that tho, if we pull to much soul into the room we might accidentally recreate the enviorement of a mortifas cell
>>
>>3033084
Absolutely. Last thing we need is to kill our friends where when met them! (Well, where we met Emi anyways)
>>
If a spell projectile passes throug an area of soul would that dissapate the spell or weaken it? If we can control the soul we could limit the soul area to just near us and not harm our friends?
>>
Upon giving this some consideration, I think it would make sense to train our spellcaster friends with him to deal with Disruptor. We've seen 2 people thus far who use Mind Control abilities (Raven and Raligos), and Terry might have similar (or more OP) abilities up his sleeve if they ever run into them.

Don't really need to bring this up right before the duel, but maybe after the duel in order to see if there's any weaknesses or holes in disruptor (stuff like stopping your cast when you anticipate Yuu to use it, using extremely fast-cast spells to break Yuu's concentration, and Pip maybe refracting the light around her to look like she's in a different spot, etc.)
>>
>>3033546
A spell passing through an area that's dense with Soul wouldn't weaken, not unless you make the soul resist the spell. You don't currently have the ability to get the soul into such a small area unless you're focusing it into a spell.

>>3033599
Disruptor is a fairly small wave that moves slowly enough to be dodged. It's one of the few spells that Yuu can't make a huge version of. Most people don't see it coming because it charges so quickly, and Yuu is usually pretty close when he fires it. Pip is banning it because you can't dodge during a mage duel.

Also light magic trickery doesn't work on Yuu anymore. It did once, and exactly once. Though it was never mentioned by anyone, Pip was blurring herself so she'd be hard to spot the first time she trained Yuu. After that his eyes "adjusted" to it completely, to the point where even Namaki's illusions are useless.
>>
>>3034271
Hey Smiley, this is kind of a random question but have you given thought to what soul "magic" of the other elements would be like?

We've seen and gotten a feel for Soul Water and Soul Earth but I don't think I understand enough about the other elements to extrapolate how those would work with soul.

I'm not expecting shadow to be used as am example though, for potentially obvious reasons.
>>
>>3036393
Yes. They all work different ways, but you won't be seeing any other soul users in this quest. I have a sequel planned should you guys choose to go that route once BtG is over.

Rolled 42 (1d100)

Emi is surprised by the sudden countdown, as she's still not done with the subject of the bet. Pip is quick to charge, letting off a blinding flash.

She should really know better than that. You can't be blinded this way.

You didn't take the time to pull Soul in, so you're not working with a ton here. You set out a buckler to deflect Pip's follow up, then fire off a bolt in response. Emi deflects it with an ice pillar, which Pip fires a beam through.

You answer Pip's beam with your own, pulling the soul back in and recycling it as it scatters at the point of contact. Pip quickly realizes she won't win with a war off attrition here, and Emi covers for her as she's forced to drop her attack.

More soul is starting to gather. It won't be long before you can simply overwhelm them, but for now you're on nearly equal ground.

Emi makes her first attack now, gathering shards of ice and launching them at you all at once. Too many for bucklers, and too big for an instant wall. You launch a small barrage of chain flares, pulling the shards into each other and making them too heavy for Emi's current focus.

The barrage doesn't end there. You fire off another one towards your opponents. The entire thing hits a light screen Pip puts up, and the amount of stress that 2 dozen flares puts on it is enough to make it crumple outward.

That's interesting to know. It seems like light screens can handle a lot of head on force, but not the kind of tension a flare puts on them.

As Pip scrambles to drop the screen, Emi launches a big ball of water your way. Instead of guarding you focus soul into the ball's center and burst it, causing it to spray the entire room.

You put up a wall to keep dry, and Emi deflects the water around her. Pip is still charging something else, so Emi has to cover for her as well.

...

"Fuck" Pip says, signalling a bit of a break. "How come you didn't get blinded?"

"I can't get blinded like that" You say. "My eyes don't use light the way others do, so trying to burn them does nothing"

"Fuck" She says again. "Alright. Break's over. Let's get this on"

You lead off the renewed engagement with a decent sized volley of bolts. Pip is quick with her defense, putting up another light screen. You let some of your bolts hit it, taking as many as you can manage and banking them around it.

Neither of them expects, or perhaps even knows that you can do this. So it catches them both off guard and they both take several hits.

"Ow!" Emi says, clutching her chest. "Since when could you do that?"

"Since I learned I could control soul outside myself" You say. "That didn't hurt too bad, did it?"

"Oof. Right in the tit. You gonna be okay, Mimi?" Pip asks.

Emi gives Pip a disapproving look as she straightens back up. "I'll be fine" She replies. "Let's start round 2"

After a quick countdown from Pip, the three of you begin again. Emi takes her time to charge something, and Pip stops you from capitalizing by putting you on the defense.

When Emi is finished charging, she holds her arms out and turns the floor to ice. Then she raises her other hand, and... you don't see any- "AUGH!" You shout, as an ice pillar comes up right under you and nails you right in the nuts.

You crumple to the icy floor as it melts away, clutching your wounded gonads.

"Oh shit. You don't fuck around" Pip says, as she comes over to you. "Right in the nuts. You okay Yuuster?"

"Peachy" You say, in a pained tone. "I feel like this violates the rules somehow"

"Yeah. No shots below the belt" Pip says. "And before you complain, the tit hit was unintentional. You were aimin' for this, Mimi"

"I-is he okay? I didn't think it would hurt him this badly..." Emi says.

"There's a reason it's against the rules..." You say, as you try to straighten out but only end up rolling onto your other side and curling up again. "I might have to tap out here"

"Me too" Pip says. "This kind of escalation means bad things for ol' Pippy. First Mimi's boob, then Yuyu's balls... I dunno what comes next, but it'll probably be on me and I want no part of that"

"But... alright..." Emi says. "Sorry Yuu. I got a little carried away"

"I wasn't paying attention. As soon as you froze the floor I should have expected something from below" You say.

"Can I help?" She asks.

"I'm not about to ask you to heal my nuts" You say. "I just need some time. It'll pass"

"Anyways. I've got some business to attend to" Pip says. "You two play nice. I'll see you later"

You wave goodbye to Pip as Emi settles in next to you, propping you up on her tail so you can sit comfortably.

"You okay?" You ask. "I didn't think hitting someone on the boob hurt as badly as Pip made it sound"

"It does hurt" She says, putting a hand over where she was hit. "Not enough to make me crumple up like you did... but it does hurt"

"If it were anywhere else, I'd offer to kiss it better" You say.

"Well you did hit a few other places..." She says, pointing to a small bruise on her arm.

You nod your head. "Want me to kiss it better?" You ask.

"No, I'll survive" She says. "Still, you're full of surprises. I don't think I understand how you did half of that stuff..."

"It started when I was up north, and I realized that I could control my blades and make them float around. Even activate them and keep them running without touching them..." You say, doing just that. "I used this to pretty good effect in the tournament, and when I was working on something here it occurred to me that I didn't have to cast spells from my body"

"So when you were shooting all of those bolts..." She says.

"I just focused the soul around me to those points, gave them a shape, and fired them in a direction" You say. "My aim isn't great right now. It's hard to hit a target spot on when you can't see your trajectory"

She nods. "Interesting... there is a method for making everything go to a target" She says. "I used it when I fired all those ice chunks at you"

You tilt your head up to look at her, waiting for her to continue.

"That spell is pretty similar to what you're saying, except the energy to create the ice has to come from me first" She says. "I used to shoot them the same way, when I was little. My grandmother taught me a little trick..."

She holds a hand out at the pillar that hit you in the nuts, and ice chunks start to form.

"Instead of picking a direction and hoping it's the right one, focus them on the target" She says. "Sort of... imagine the target attracting your attacks, then fire-"

She launches the ice chunks and each one hits its mark, demolishing the pillar bit by bit.

"-and they'll all hit" She says with a smile.

"Mind if I give that a shot now?" You ask.

"Sure, I'll just..." She holds her hand out and remakes the destroyed pillar. "... there. Go ahead"

You focus soul around you into bolts, doing as Emi said and imagining the target attracting all of them. Then without aiming, you fire.

Almost all of them hit. On such a small-ish target, that's pretty good.

"Wow. Your Grandmother knew what she was doing" You say.

"I did learn from the best" She says.

"Any other tricks like that? I could use a few..." You say.

"None that come to mind. If you do have other problems with spellcasting, I'm sure I could help" She says.

"Any idea how to use a monumental amount of power in a way that doesn't involve leveling a city block?" You ask.

"N-not really" She says. "Maybe you could try focusing it into something solid? Soul crystals do tend to be quite dangerous. Being stabbed with one, even in a superficial place, could be fatal if your opponent isn't careful"

"Interesting idea..." You say. "I won't do it here, because I'd need to bring in a lot of power, but I'll keep it in mind"

"And I'll keep trying to come up with new things" She says. "Can you really level a city block?"

You chuckle and tell her the story about the outpost, the creature you found there, and how you had to destroy it.

She listens well, but then she's always been a good listener... though you do notice her starting to coil you a bit as the story finishes. It's probably because of how cool it is in here. All that ice flinging really dropped the temperature...

You don't worry about it. The house is pretty well heated, so the room should even out in time. Until then you're enjoying getting to talk magic with someone who knows more than you, and you always liked the way Emi's coils felt...

"-so I just launched everything I had gathered and hoped for the best" You say, finishing your story. "When the blast cleared, the creature was gone... and so was the rest of the outpost. Everything that was above ground, anyway"

"I could see why you wouldn't want to do that when there are people around" Emi says.

"Well I worked out some hand signals with Derrick on the way back, so I can send Coral to communicate simple things in a pinch" You say. "Right Coral?"

...

"Oh yeah. She's with Ilica" You say.

Emi giggles. "I'd still be happy to learn" She says.

You smile and start going through the simple things like 'stay back', 'need assistance', 'need healing', 'approach with caution', 'all clear'...

By the time you're done, Emi looks a tad overwhelmed...

"Derrick actually remembers all of these?" She asks.

"We haven't used them yet. But a lot of them are pretty standard in the Lubrian army, and they picked them up from the Hunters" You say. "So if you can't remember, then Ilica probably knows most of them"

"Why would the Hunters need signals like this?" She asks.

"To communicate when you can't speak" You say. "Hunters do a lot of sneaking, so no talking there. Could be just as useful if things get too loud and speech becomes unreliable"

"I have heard of a few wind spells that can alter sound like that..." Emi says.

"Really?" You ask. "What are they?"

"Off the top of my head there's just Roar and Whisper" She says. "Roar creates a wind current that makes a lot of noise, while whisper thickens the air so sound doesn't travel well..."

"Any other cool kinds of spells like that?" You ask. "I know one kind that my head maid uses. She's a windspeaker, so she can make her voice travel pretty far"

"Wow... I didn't think windspeakers actually existed" Emi says.

"She uses it to give orders to the other maids when there's something she needs done" You say.

"Has she shown you hwo it works?" She asks.

"Only once. It felt kinda weird" You say. "Like she was right next to me whispering in my ear, even though she was all the way across the room"

"That does sound kinda off putting" Emi says. "Did she have to whisper?"

"I think it carries better if she whispers" You say.

"Well the people from the south who can manipulate sound are a bit like that too" She says. "Anyone can cast Roar, if they have the patience to learn it. But Silence is unique to the people of Kuzari Isle"

"Which one is that, the big one?" You ask.

"No, not the big one" She says. "The big one is Denkashi. Kuzari is the one just south of that"

"Okay. I know the one you're talking about" You say. "Are there a lot of people with unique magic stuff? I know I've run into quite a few. The blue devils, windspeaker elves, dragons, the dudes and dudettes from Kuzari..."

"Most of the time it's just a single spell, like the windspeaking, silence, dragon breath, or seep that gets altered. But yes, people with unique magics are quite common" She says.

"You get anything cool as a Serpid?" You ask.

"Not really" She says.

"Bummer" You reply.

"I do have some pretty advantageous physical stuff, like my tail... oh goodness, I didn't even realize" She says, finally noticing how far into coiling you she's gotten. "Why didn't you say anything?"

"Honest answer? I... kinda missed this" You say. "It feels a bit nostalgic, from the nights when we used to share a room. Possibly the best I've ever slept, all nice and cozy in your tail. Plus you seemed cold"

Emi seems surprised. "I... kinda do too..." She says. "It was nice having someone I could coil up with after a long day... before it started feeling a bit awkward"

"Why was that, anyway?" You ask.

"Well... don't be insulted, but I kinda didn't really see you as a person..." She says, squirming nervously. "You didn't really act much like a person back then. You were kinda..."

"Dumb?"

"Not dumb. Not by any means" She says. "But sort of clueless... it made you endearing, like a kid, or a... a pet"

"You thought I was a pet?" You ask.

Emi starts waving her arms around. "P-please don't be insulted!" She says.

"I'm not insulted... it's just interesting that you saw it that way" You say. "What changed?"

"You... grew up a bit" She says. "Not in the normal sense. You were still quite childish at the time. But in the Southern sense, where a boy is considered a man once he's won a fight"

"So after I came back from Mortifas, I was a man" You say, adding with a cheeky smile: "And you couldn't keep a man as a pet"

Emi pouts. "I said I was sorry..."

You laugh and poke her cheeks, until she adds your arms to the coils and tightens up so you can't move.

"There. Nice and cozy" You say.

Emi giggles and loosens up a bit, allowing your arms to come free. "Now I'm kinda curious... how did you see me back then?" She asks.

She laughs at that last bit.

"But despite the crushing, and occasional bit of clumsiness, it always felt good to be close to you" You say.

"And how about now?" She asks.

"Now...? Well I know a bit more about you, myself, and everything now. So you're more like a close friend and comrade. Someone who's always there for me, and who I can always be there for" You say, gently putting a hand on her cheek.

"Only when they make a face like that" She says, loosening further until she can slide away. "Come on. This is nice, but I'd like to be somewhere a bit warmer..."

"I am perfectly fine. The only coldness I'm getting is from you" You say.

"Yeah. I would kinda like to hear about this stuff... though I am enjoying hangin' out with you" You say.

"You'll have plenty of chances" Emi says.

You give Emi a hug, which she returns. Not with her full coils, but then you have places to be.

"You should consider getting into mental therapy" You say as you pull away. "You've got such a comfy body, and you're a great listener... I think you'd really be good at it"

"I think I'll stick to physical healing" She says. "Occasionally helping someone work something out is fine, but I don't think I have the temperament to do it for a living"

You shrug. "Yeah that could be taxing..." You say, as you start writing a reply to Ilica. "But on the upside you'll be in the fancy part of Leon, where nobody has real problems"

"I'm sure fancy people have their fair share of real problems" She says, brushing her hair back with a shy smile. "S-speaking as a fancy person with some real problems..."

"See? You'd be perfect for dealing with fancy people problems" You say. "That was a bad joke. Have some tea while I'm out. Patty makes a really nice cup"

"Perhaps I will" She says. "Take care out there. Don't let Vivi beat you up too much"

"See you in a bit" You reply.

You grab your coat, hop on the Rook, make your plow, and head out. The way to the church is pretty familiar to you by now, so it doesn't take long to get there.

But you do have to make your plow taller to match the height of the snow. That kind of annoys you.

There are some lights on in the church when you arrive, a sure sign that someone other than Lianna is here. She only turns them on when someone who can see comes over...

Unless that person is you. Sight-wise you're pretty much opposites, with her being blind, and you seeing so well that you can't be blinded.

The main door is unlocked, so you just step inside. "Helloooooo" You call out.

"Mwoh" Vivi replies, coming out from behind one of the pews. You watch as she stops in front of you, taking the time to perfectly arrange all of her paws and wrap her tail around them. Then she looks up. "Meh-woh"

"Hey there" You say, crouching down to her level. "Where's your sister?"

"Sssssss-ssssss..." Vivi says.

"That's a new noise" You say. "Can you say sis?"

"Ssssssssis..." She replies. "Sis"

"Very good!" You say, scratching her ear.

Ilica pops out from the door into Lianna's living space. "Did she say the thing again?" She asks.

"Sis?" You ask.

Ilica gets a big smile as she nods. "She's got mama and sis down. Doesn't have the 'D' or 'P' sound worked out yet, so it'll be a while before 'dad' enters her vocab" She says. "But she's learning. How's the weather?"

"Snowy" You reply, picking up Vivi so you can bring her to Ilica.

"Still?" She asks. "Thanks for the offer. I didn't really want to walk back through that..."

"If you'd asked I would have taken you here too..." You say.

She shrugs. "You were busy, and I wanted to let Vivi get her fill of the snow" She says.

"How'd that go?" You ask as you hand the kitten over.

"Pretty darn cute is how it went" She says, tickling Vivi's nose. "She would stop whenever she saw a big snowflake falling, get all set to pounce at it, then get all confused when it hit the ground and disappeared"

"Aww" You say.

"That went on for about 5 minutes, and then she was cold and decided it was time to be carried" She says. "Still cute seeing her watch the snow. She had just been born as the last winter ended, so I don't even think her eyes were open to see it"

"Well get used to it, Vivi. This happens every year" You say.

"Mew" Vivi replies.

You head back with Ilica to where Lianna is waiting, in a room with comfy looking chairs that you didn't even know was in here...

"I didn't know you had comfy couches" You say.

Lianna lets out a light giggle. "Neither did I, until Ilica spotted them. Someone must have put them here without telling me..." She says. "Good evening, Yuu. It is nice to hear your voice"

"Just as nice as it is to see your face, Lianna" You say, as you lean in for a hug.

"Wow. Didn't know you two were so familiar" Ilica says.

"It's been an interesting couple weeks" You say, as you sit down next to Ilica on the long couch. "But we're not here to hear about me"

"Indeed" Ilica says. "We took a break while we were waiting for you. I'm right up to the part where Stella made us all go dancing"

"Oh yeah..." You say. "That was fun"

"So anyway, we went to the camp the next day..."

>1/2
>>
Ilica talks about the arrival at the camp, and how rigorous the training was. Several people couldn't cut it and had to go home, but everyone you knew who went was already pretty tough.

Every day after training was study, since you need to know the monsters in order to fight them.

Once a week they'd form squads and follow a real team out onto a hunt, watching the pros do it and learning everything they could.

"Going in I didn't think a couple months would be long enough to really prepare for my first actual hunt. But when the time came I really felt ready" She says.

"Who was your team?" You ask.

"It was me, Derrick, Mads, and this other dude around our age named Cael, along with my mom, who was supervising" She says.

"Target?" You ask.

"Wyvern. There was a big debate over whether anyone wanted to try and tame it, but in the end they opted to just remove it" She says. "We had the swords up front, while Cael and I held the back"

"How'd it go?" You ask.

"Smoothly. Cael and I managed to poke big enough holes in its wing membranes so it couldn't fly away. Then Derrick out-firebreathed it, which impressed the hell outta me, while Madelaine went in for the quick one-hop-two on its eyes" She says. "Then Derrick lopped off its tail, Cael put a heavy bolt into its foot to pin it, Madelaine stunned it, and I put a bolt in its brain"

"Nicely done" You say. "Cael was using one of those ballistae things, right?"

Ilica nods. "When the hunters join up I'll introduce you. He's a good shot, and a pretty cool dude... I guess" She says, her tail flicking around a bit.

"Sounds much smoother than our first monster fight" You say.

Lianna laughs. "That is not a very high bar to set" She says. "Lacking in heroism and sacrifice, but people don't have to play the hero when everything is going well"

"Yeah, I kinda got spiked..." You say. "To be fair that wasn't supposed to be a sacrifice. I honestly thought I was fast enough to push Ilica and get out of the way after"

"What made you think that?" Ilica asks.

"Well the only time I'd ever had to move fast was in the prison, where my body had been overcharged with soul" You say. "So I was trying to move like that again, only now I didn't have the charge..."

"Oh... I didn't think about it like that" Ilica says.

"Really that entire fight was me thinking I could do things that I couldn't do, and trying things that didn't pan out" You say. "I wasn't as fast as I thought I was, I went to grab a sword and the handle came off, I couldn't hold on as well as I thought..."

"Sounds like you didn't think very far ahead..." Lianna says.

"I didn't think much back then. I was basically just fighting the scary thing to protect the nice people" You say. "I was sure I was done for when you jumped up on its face and returned the favour"

"Yeah. I saw Emi doin' some magic, but I didn't think she'd be in time. So I bought some time with the only thing I had..." She says.

"Based on what I now know about Emi, she was probably charging something much bigger than what she needed" You say. "Was that fight what made you change your mind about leaving us?"

She thinks for a second, then shakes her head. "I was still kinda on the fence about it" She says. "The real turning point was when you all decided to take the devils back to Fran..."

"Really?" You ask.

"It was the right thing to do... even if there were more important places to be" She says. "If you had decided to keep going, I probably would have brought them to Contique myself..."

"But you didn't have to" You say. "You just had to endure a long cart ride with a cargo of catnip..."

"Myah, that wasn't so bad" She says.

With the way Lianna is smiling, you know Ilica's already told her about that ride.

"But anyway, you were talking about hunting" You say.

"Right, yeah. So we got the Wyven" She says. "Mom even complimented me on the kill shot"

"Nice" You say.

Ilica does look pretty proud of that. "But aside from that, not much else" She says. "Couple interesting little incidents here and there..."

"Oh? Like what?"

"Like Derrick ruining dinner when he tried to help Hella start a cooking fire" She says. "Uhh... the big drink-off on the last day as we were striking camp, the little happy dance Hella did whenever something good happened, Madelaine being the unsneakiest person in the world... take your pick"

"Subtlety's never been Madelaine's strong suit" You say.

"Yeah well, tell her next time she wants to sneak out and do girl business or whatever she should watch for tails" She says. "She stepped on mine not once, but twice! Once back at the tower, and again at the camp. Didn't even notice or apologize"

...

You know about those already, and you know that she might have been a bit preoccupied.

"Well give her hell when you see her" You say, biting back your desire to wisecrack about tables and changing the subject. "How'd Derrick ruin dinner?"

"Hella was havin' trouble starting a cooking fire. Already had all her stuff set up over the fireplace, just needed to light it" She says. "In comes Derrick to save the day, but right as he was about to light it our instructor gave him a 'good job today' butt pat. Surprised the hell out of him, and the whole cooking ensemble went up in flames"

"Yikes" You say. "Manage to salvage anything?"

"No. We ate field stuff that night. Hella was not happy" You say.

"So she wasn't dancing?" You ask.

"Not that night no. Night after that, yeah" She says. "You should ask her to show you the happy dance. It's pretty cute"

"I'll wait to see it naturally" You say. "If I asked her to dance for me out of nowhere she might faint..."

"Yeah... probably" Ilica says.

She then goes on to fill you and Lianna in on the rest of the camp happenings. Stuff like the hunters she trained with and under, little bits of gossip from around the camp, and who she thought really stood out.

"And I think... that's about it" Ilica says. "Then most of us went home, while the new hunters went off to their assigned towns... I ended up in Leon, and that's when we heard about the attack in Locke... you went north, we stayed for a little while and then the Guild scattered out of Lubars"

"What made you go south?" You ask.

"I figured Emi probably needed my help more than you. You had the mouse with you, after all. Plus Mom went south, since she knew the isles from her time there and I wanted to stick with her" She says. "Why, did you miss me that much?"

"With all my heart, dear Ilica" You say in an overly dramatic tone. "But seriously, I did miss you guys. Pip's cool, and I like Cheska's gumption. But it wasn't the same without the old crew"

"I'll say. You did good work up north, but we could've used a bit of Yuu down there..." She says.

"Dunno what I could've done to change how things went, but things turned out... kinda okay, I guess" You say.

"Emi's still broken up about it, I know that much" She says. "Her Grandmother was basically the last person of power still talking sense down there. When she knew she was dying, she told Emi to run"

"So that's why she came north..." You say.

Ilica nods. "So when Lady Myuashi passed away, that Kameh dude pretty much took over Ebiha" She says. "It was gonna happen anyway once he married Emi, but it was more of a hostile takeover this way. Seized the palace, started getting rid of everything inside..."

"Including the sculptures Lady Myuashi made" You say.

"All but the one Emi managed to guard" She says. "She hoped that making good on their original engagement might stop the destruction and give her some sway over what was happening... so she was wed, and immediately confined to the now empty palace while Kameh planned his attack"

You frown and stay quiet this time, letting her continue.

"That's around the time when we showed up. Mom heard what they were doing and had none of it" She says. "Didn't have the numbers to make much of a difference, but we did manage to boot them off the island. It wasn't easy. They put up a hell of a fight... but I got to personally go in and bust Emi out"

"Bet she was happy to see you" You say.

"Not as happy as you'd expect, but she had a lot of reasons to be sad" She says. "After that it was decided that we had to break through and get a message to you guys, and... you know the rest"

"Lianna doesn't" You say.

"I do, actually" Lianna replies. She's been quietly petting Vivi this whole time.

...

When did Vivi go over there? She's usually not quite so friendly with strangers... although this particular stranger is very friendly.

"I know most of that story, anyway. Quite the narrow escape..." Lianna says.

"Wouldn't have been as worrying if Vivi hadn't been there" Ilica says. "We could all handle a crash landing and a possible fight northward, but to do all of that with a kitten in tow..."

"Perhaps this time she'll learn not to sleep in places where she shouldn't" Lianna says.

"That's what we said the first time..." Ilica says. "But it's all over now, and Vivi is nice and safe and warm here in Lutain"

"Relatively warm" You say.

"Warm indoors" Ilica says. "I do worry about Emi still"

"Emi will recover" You say. "Give her a couple years and she'll be running those islands"

Ilica snorts. "I don't think she's interested in that. She was actually kinda relieved by the news of her exile" She says. "She was worried about how you'd take it, given your hand in it. But I think she's really looking forward to settling down in Leon"

"It is a good deal" You say.

"What deal?" Lianna asks.

"The heir of the Rynia family back in Leon offered her a building to open a healing practice in" You say. "Nice building, well insulated, in a good area. Better than just about anywhere else could do for her"

"Interesting" Lianna says. "Were the two of them... close?"

"Kinda? They got along kinda well, but I don't recall either of them going out of their way to spend time with each other" You say. "But Leah knows that Emi's a damn good healer, so as soon as Leah learned that Emi was homeless she jumped on the chance to have her in Leon"

"You sound sore about that" Lianna says, a slight smile on her lips.

"She outplayed me. I offered Emi a place here when I finally got a chance to talk to her about everything, only to find I'd been beaten to the punch" You say with a shrug. "Tough to admit, but Leah is definitely better of us at business"

"Tough to admit, but it's good to know where your weaknesses lay" She says. "I'm sure you've got a few things up on her..."

"Don't count me out just yet" You say. "I've got Lutain poised to become the central hub of this continent. The war's not over yet. Plenty of time for the city to grow, and as the city grows so does my leverage..."

"I hope you're not planning to expand too much..." Lianna says. "I rather like Lutain the way it is"

"That... is a point" You say. "I'm sure there are people here who would prefer a bigger city, but there'd be just as many who like it how it is"

"Town might also outgrow this little church here too" Ilica says. "I do recall you being pretty vocal about your dislike of the big ones in Leon"

"Alright, so maybe not looking to get that big" You say. "Still plenty of time to try and convince Emi to come here... not much I can do about the church though. Once word gets out that Lutain's got the most beautiful priestess in the land, people are bound to come flocking"

Lianna's face turns red, and her smile strains. "Perhaps I should start wearing a veil..." She says.

"I didn't believe it when you told me, Priestess" Ilica says, poking you in the cheek. "Our Yuu's turned into a big flirt"

"I am not a flirt. Flirts flirt" You say. "And flirting is to behave as though attracted to or trying to attract someone, but for amusement rather than with serious intentions. I was giving a serious and well meant compliment"

Ilica gives you an odd look. "How do you even know that?" She asks.

"The definition of flirt was like the first thing I actually learned" You say with a smile. "Way back in Sherton, when Stella had to pull out the dictionary after I complimented her ears"

"Interesting..." Lianna says.

Ilica laughs and slaps her leg. "Oh yeah! I remember that" She says. "Oh my god, she was working so hard to keep her composure. I don't think poor Stella ever had to deal with someone like you"

"What happened?" Lianna asks.

"I wasn't that bad..." You say.

"Ohhhhhhh if you still think that, then this is a long time comin'..." Ilica says. "Alright, so it was when we stopped off at the guild hall to get a sprite off to Fran..."

"We left Yuu alone for like... 5 minutes. He compliments the rabbit on her ears, she points to the no flirting sign" Ilica says.

"Which I couldn't actually read at the time" You say.

"Not the important part, but I totally forgot about that... Anyway. Stella goes and gets the dictionary, reads out the definition, and has to explain why people flirting with the desk rabbits all the time is a bad thing... then-" Ilica stops to laugh for a second "-then he's like 'but why would anyone want to flirt with you?'"

Lianna looks like she's trying to contain her laughter now as well...

"So Stella's like 'it's because of how cute I am'... you know, kinda lookin' for an actual response. And Yuu just changes the subject!" She says.

Lianna's attempts to hold back her laughter begin to fail. "That... does sound pretty bad" She says.

"That's not even it. So now Stella looks right and mad, and Yuu asks about it. Then when she said she was fine, he's like 'oh 'cause you looked kinda mad there'..." Ilica says.

"Stella took it all in stride" You say.

"Took it all in stride? I could only listen from the other room, but I was starting to think we'd have to spend the night dislodging the lucky rabbit's foot from your butt" She says. "You should've seen the relief on her face when we came back though..."

"I thought I was doing alright there by the end..." You say.

"Dude it was the look of 'oh thank god this dude's friends are back'..." She says. "No clue why she decided to hang out with you on our second run through..."

"Cold..." You say. "Well Lianna thinks I'm handsome, at least"

"She's blind" Ilica says.

"Tsk tsk, Ilica. I am still allowed to have preferences" Lianna says, turning the conversation on your feline friend.

"Alright, you got me there..." Ilica says. "And you are kinda handsome. Not undeniably so, but you've definitely grown into that face"

"Why thank you" You say.

"Could use a haircut though" She adds.

"Yeah, it's been a little while..." You say, running your hands back through your hair. "Did Stella really look annoyed when you guys came in? I honestly thought I was doing good there"

"She looked less annoyed... more nervous. Like when you're talking with someone who you don't know how to deal with" She says. "Still doesn't explain why she decided to take you out after that, but hey..."

"Maybe Hella knows" You say. "They kept a pretty close correspondence"

"Worth asking, if you're not feeling patient enough to wait for the word of the bun herself" Ilica says. "So should I be keepin' an eye on you two? You've been throwin' an awful lot of love at each other"

"It won't be long" Lianna says.

Ilica gives Lianna a hug. "Thanks again, Priestess. I'll be sure to stop by again tomorrow" She says as she heads out, leaving the two of you in relative privacy.

"What's up?" You ask. "I wasn't being too flirty, was I?"

"No, it's not that" She says. "I was being serious about the bigger city... my congregation is already a little bit too large even for the new church..."

"Lutain does seem to be a bit big for just one priestess, yeah" You say. "But the city growing is kind of inevitable with the air harbour going up..."

She looks troubled.

"What do most bigger cities do in this case? Bigger church? More churches? More priests?" You ask.

"Numbers 2 and 3, usually" She says.

"So Lutain gets a new church or two. Is that so bad?" You ask.

"The people aren't about to forget the woman who saw many of them through their darkest times, even when she was going through hers" You say, putting a hand on her cheek. "And I'll make sure your church is always the nicest"

She smiles, but it's clear that's not what's troubling her...

Thankfully you know you don't have to beat around the bush here, so you go straight past the usual coaxing... "But that's not it. What's actually troubling you?" You ask.

"Places tend to lose their heart when they grow like this" She says. "Lutain has stayed strong because its people were always close, and always willing to help each other... I fear that is something people will trade off as their neighbours become unfamiliar..."

"That is... a legitimate concern" You say. "I get that too, coming from Leon to here. Like there's so many people over there that they all just kinda give up on being friendly..."

"I do not wish for that to happen here" She says. "I understand your desire to compete, but..."

"I'll be in touch" You say. "Have a good night"

"I will. You take care of your friends now, alright?" She says.

"I always do" You say, making sure she doesn't need help getting anywhere before you head out front where Ilica is waiting.

"All set?" She asks, bouncing Vivi in her arms. The kitten is wearing a full body winter suit that's so thick it splays her limbs out and makes her look like a starfish...

"Yeah. Let's head home" You say.

"What'd the priestess want to say?" She asks.

"Just voicing some concerns about the direction the town is going" You say. "Things that I agreed with and will be working on"

"Good" She says as she opens the door and leads you out. "Wouldn't want her to make it all the way through the legion's occupation only to lose it to your antics"

"You say that like I'm some sort of menace..." You say.

"Not entirely wrong" She replies.

"You sure you don't wanna walk home...?" You ask.

"Oh hush. We both know that's a bluff" She says. "Now how the heck do you even ride this through the snow?"

>1/2
>>
"Okay, the thing at the front is pretty smart" Ilica says as she hops off the Rook.

"I'm currently working on a way to keep the streets clear for everyone" You say. "By the time this snowfall finally ends it should be ready to go"

"It just keeps comin' down, doesn't it?" Ilica asks. "Not hard, but steady"

...

"I think we'll both agree not to make a sex joke about that and move on" You say.

"Agreed" She says. "I like your little Rook shed"

"The girls had it put up for me when I was out" You say. "Handy thing. I was getting tired of blowing the snow off every time I wanted to ride"

"Most people wouldn't ride through this weather..." She says.

"Most people actually feel the cold" You say.

"True" She says. "Anyway. I'm gonna put the gremlin to bed, then probably hit the hay myself"

"Good call" You say. You are feeling a little tired yourself, but you figure you can still do a few things before bed...

"Before you go, pass me the starfish. I wish to hug it" You say.

Ilica laughs and hands Vivian over so you can give her a big hug while her claws are unavailable to her.

"Such a cute little sea creature" You say, holding Vivi back out at arm's length. "Learn my name next, okay? It's Yuu. Y-uu. Super easy"

"Mew" Vivi says.

"Just like that, but without the M" You say. "Now try it again-"

"Alright man. If she learns any name first it'll be mine" She says as she reclaims her sister.

"But Ilica has so many different sounds that she has to learn! Yuu is just one, and it's one that she already knows" You say.

"Goodnight Yuu" Ilica says, giving you a quick hug.

You chuckle. "Goodnight, Ilica"

As she goes, you figure you'll do a quick trip around to see what your other friends are up to. Looks like everybody's on their way to bed, and you don't have any pressing reasons to interrupt them. So you say goodnight and let them go on their way.

Remembering earlier when you and Lola were talking about "lessons", you decide to go find her. She's just coming out of the baths when you cross paths, hair still wet and dressed in her night gown.

"Oh, good evening sir" She says. "Come to see me or just passing by?"

"Looking for you" You say. "About... what we discussed earlier..."

It takes her a second to remember, and she smiles. "Oh, of course" She says. "Did you want to start that now sir?"

"If you have time now, yeah..." You say. "I don't want to interrupt anything"

Lola giggles. "Do I look like I'm doing anything?" She asks.

...

"Well no, but that doesn't mean-"

"Go to your room" She says. "I'll be up in a bit"

"O-okay" You say.

Lola gives you a wink before heading off with a bit of a spring to her step. You decide to just do as she says, and head up to your room.

It feels like you're waiting for a while, but when the knock comes at your door your timekeeper says it's only been a few minutes...

You open the door to see Lola, still in her nightgown. She doesn't look any different, and she isn't carrying anything... so you have to wonder where she went.

"So what's lesson one?" You ask once the door is shut behind her.

"Not ready for lesson one yet. First it's story time" She says.

You tilt your head.

"I already know you've had some experience" She says, as she sits in your comfy chair. "I'd like to know what you've done so I can know where to begin"

"Oh" You say, feeling your cheeks start to heat up. "Uhh..."

"Don't be nervous" She says with a calm smile. "Come sit down in front of me. I'll rub your shoulders, and you can just relax and fill me in. Nothing will leave this room. Even Saki won't hear anything we say in here"

"A-alright..." You say, moving over to the spot on the floor in front of her and sitting down.

Lola starts to work her hands into your shoulders. It feels really nice... She waits until she feels you starting to cool down before speaking. "Now, any time you want to start..." She says.

"Where do I even start?" You ask.

"Wherever you want" She says. "I already know about the redhead... you can start there, you can start with something I don't know... you can lead in with something totally unrelated. It's up to you"

"Alright... so have I told you about Namaki?" You ask.

"A little" She says. "That's the fox lady that's like 300 years old and- her?"

You nod.

"Okay. Interesting. You have my attention. Go on" She says. "I mean you had my attention regardless, but this is just unexpected..."

"Alright, simmer down. You're not the one spilling your sexual experiences..." You say.

"I know. Sorry" She says. "Okay. Ancient sexy fox lady. Go"

You start off telling her about the first time it felt like things were getting heavy with Namaki, in the hot spring when you were looking for 'weak spots'. Then you skip to what happened after you brushed her tails, and how that ended...

"So she stopped you" She says. "Interesting... it sounded like all of that was pretty much her idea"

"Really?" You ask.

"Foxes are known for their wily nature. Fox ladies are known for their wiles" She says. "If you thought you were in control there, it's because she let you feel that way to keep you comfortable"

"Huh... that does sound like her" You say.

"So is that all?" She asks.

You shake your head, settle back into her massage, and tell her about your last encounter with the fox...

>1/2
>>
After finishing your tale of tails in as much detail as you feel comfortable giving, your tell her about what really happened with Madelaine.

"So it sounds like you've not done much real seduction..." She says.

"What do you mean?" You ask.

"Well it sounds like Namaki is the one who does most of the seducing in your encounters with her, and the redhead... well..." She trails off.

"Okay, I see what you mean..." You say, rolling your shoulders along with her hands. "I feel like your massage skills are wasted here. You could be hitting a big market with those hands... did they teach you this at Oclisse?"

"They did" She says. "Though the way they taught me involves a bit more wandering from my hands... especially towards the end. I figured I'd keep it tame right now"

"Big market for that too" You say.

Lola stops massaging, then pinches and pulls hard on your cheeks.

"Ow, ow! I'm sorry. I was just kidding" You say, rubbing your cheeks when she lets them go.

Lola gets up and walks around in front of you. "Stand up" She says in a commanding, impatient tone, continuing once you're on your feet. "Before we start anything, ground rules need to be set"

"A-alright..." You say, feeling more than a little shame at your accidental insult.

"Rule number one: No joke about my arts or my training" She says. "You may get your jokes in before and after the session. Once we've started you will take all of this seriously, and treat my profession with respect"

You nod slowly. "I really am sorry..." You say.

"If you're really sorry, then apologize like a man" She says, taking your cheeks and turning your head toward her. "Kiss me"

"Uhh, I-I-"

She steps away and starts untying the straps keeping her nightgown up. "Rule number two: you will not shy away from intimacy" She says, letting the gown fall to the floor. "There will be no books here. Every lesson will be hands on. There will be kissing, touching, and fucking. If that makes you uncomfortable, say so now and we'll stop"

"It doesn't make me uncomfortable..." You say.

"Sir, look at me. We leave the inhibitions and notions of propriety at the door" She says, taking your hands and placing them on her hips. "When the door is closed it's no longer Yuu and Lola. We're just man and woman, student and teacher until the lesson is over. If you can't manage that, then say so now. If you can, then don't say anything. Kiss me"

You heard the bunny. You can do this, so you step forward, pull her into you, and press your lips into hers. Just a quick kiss, you don't want to get too carried...

...

Holy shit she's good at this. It's just lips right now, not even any tongue and it feels so good somehow... what if you got a little tongue involved...?

...

Oh gods have mercy this might be as far as you go. 'Sorry guys, can't fight the Legion, no time for ruins. My tongue has found its way into the maid and it is staying there'... you don't even really comprehend half the things that she's doing, it just feels so good.

Lola is the one who breaks the kiss, pulling only a few inches away with a knowing smile that widens when she sees your face of unrestrained shock.

"Good, right?" She asks, hear hand playing with the hair on the back of your head.

You nod your head as your senses slowly return to full power. "Can you teach me to kiss like that?" You ask.

"Of course" She says.

"Any other rules?" You ask.

"None right now. They can be added if they're needed" She says.

"Just respect you and don't be afraid to do the sex?" You ask.

"Right you are" She says.

"When can we start?" You ask.

"Well... I kinda thought we were starting now..." She says.

"Oh. Yeah. Right. Of course" You say.

...

"Need a moment?" She asks.

"Probably" You reply.

She gives you another kiss and then steps away, going to where her nightgown hit the floor and stepping back into it. "Do me a favour and hold my ears for me" She says, as she bends down to pick her gown back up.

You gently take her ears and lift them up, keeping them out of the way as she redresses herself. "So where do we start?" You ask.

"Thanks. You can put those down, maybe tie up one of these straps for me" She says, turning herself to tie one strap while you start working on the other. "I was thinking we'd just keep going there. Kissing seems to have your attention tonight. So we'll work on that until around 10, then I'll give you a quick finish and put you to bed. Sound like a plan?"

"Works for me" You say.

"Good" She chirps. "Go into your desk drawer and grab the little tube thing in there. Should say lip balm on it"

You nod and look where she told you to as she makes herself comfortable. There's a few other things in here as well... lubricant, slime tips, oils... When you ask she tells you she stocked it after you first agreed to let her teach you, so she wouldn't have to carry that stuff back and forth.

When you're seated, and your lips are well balmed, she begins the lesson.

"Now, a lot of people, you included, think the only way to make a kiss interesting is with tongue" She says. "That is absolutely false. Plenty of fun to be had with just the lips, and that's where we'll be starting tonight..."

You awaken the next morning feeling refreshed, sitting up in your bed and rubbing your eyes. It's still early, since Lola hasn't yet busted in, so you decide to get up and do some stretches...

...

Okay it can't be that early. You go to look out into the hall, wondering where she could be. Just before you reach the door it bursts open, and you jump back to avoid getting nailed.

Lola looks surprised, but then she bursts out laughing. "Oh, sir. I'm sorry" She says, stepping forward to hug you. "I didn't get you did I?"

"No. You'll have to try harder than that to hit me. I'm far too quick" You say.

"Well I'm not going to try to hit you, so don't you worry" She says, pulling away and holding your shoulders with a big smile. "How are you this morning?"

"Feeling pretty good" You say.

She smiles and shuts the door. "Ready for a pop quiz?" She asks.

"Pop qui-" You're cut off as Lola leans in and kisses you. It takes a second to register that the door is closed, meaning class is in session. Once it clicks, you push forward and put last night's lessons to work.

Lola pulls away looking satisfied, putting her hands on her cheeks and swaying side to side excitedly and giggling. "That was so good!" She says, hopping back in for another hug. "You're a such a great student"

You chuckle and wrap your arms around the energetic maid, rubbing her back and playing with her hair. "It's fascinating material, and you're a good teacher" You say.

She lets out a satisfied hum. "And you give very good hugs" She says.

"So do you" You say.

She looks up, resting her chin on your chest. "Is it the boobs?" She asks.

"They do add a level of softness to it..." You say. "It's more about the way you press into it with your face. Big boobs and small boobs both have their advantages when it comes to hugging"

"I could see that" She says, stepping back and hefting her breasts. "With the bra on you can't really press in like you can with someone who's less busty..."

"Exactly" You say. "They're soft, yes, but you kinda have to lean around them"

She nods. "You've put a lot of thought into this" She says.

"Not really. I just like hugs, and it's something I've noticed" You say.

She smiles. "Alright. Enough hug talk" She says, stepping over to your dresser to pick out your outfit. "Any troubles I can help with this morning, sir?"

You discussed this last night. She's not asking about anything normal. When she asks like that using the word 'troubles', whether the door is open or closed, she's offering "help". That was rule number 3, added at the end of last night's lesson: no one leaves class unsatisfied.

"Nope. I am good" You say.

"You look good" She says as she goes through your drawers. "Very awake. Much more so than the last few mornings"

"I had my reasons" You reply.

Lola giggles as she places your outfit on the bed, then gives you a peck on the cheek. "Have a pleasant day, sir. Good luck with your training" She says. "I'll be back here tonight at say... 9?"

"9 works"

She smiles, puts another peck on your cheek, then skips out so you can dress. Given her attitude lately, you're starting to think she may be enjoying this even more than you are...

Once you're dressed you head down to get breakfast. Pip is the only one here, groggily spooning oatmeal into her mouth...

"Good morning" You say.

"Hey hey..." She says, sounding tired as she rubs her eyes. "How'd it go last night with the cat?"

"When I went out to see Ilica? Pretty well" You say. "Found out some interesting stuff... what's got you up so early?"

"Snow's stopped, so the Commander's heading back to the front" She says. "I'll be accompanying her"

"I thought you weren't going back until I did" You say.

"Not there for good. She wants me to help with a project" She says, leaning over and waving you in. "They've started developing a new warship, under the guise of just doing repairs on the Valiant"

"The Valiant's the one that went down, right?" You ask.

She nods. "State of the art stuff we're lookin' at here, Yuyu. She's gettin' me to help set up an efficient light screen defense" She says. "No other big details yet, but it sounds like the Valiant's gonna rule the skies when it launches again"

"I hope to see that... in fact I might just join you" You say.

She shakes her head. "Might raise suspicion. I'm going as a 'guard', technically" She says. "We're doing it out there because they have no reason to think we're doing anything other than raising the Valiant. When it comes up with twice the firepower of a normal airship it'll catch them off guard"

"I see..." You say. "So tell no one"

She nods. "The gals are trustworthy enough, but it's still best to keep this under wraps" She says. "If you want updates, Gretchen's being kept in the know. So feel free to discuss it with her"

"Alright. I do like visiting her" You say. "Not many people I can talk about devices and machines with"

"Yeah, she's super into it. It's what makes her so good at her job" She says. "You seen her latest personal project?"

"Judging by your tone I'm gonna say yeah" You say.

"I was over there after the magic duel's nutty conclusion. Commander wanted me to round up a few engineers to bring along" She says. "It's certainly an interesting little machine... no clue who she got the prick mold from, but whoever it is has one nice lookin' schlong"

A maid comes in to bring you your breakfast, and you thank her as she bows and leaves.

Same kinda oatmeal as Pip. Smells like it's spiced with something, so you pick up a spoonful. But before putting it in your mouth... "Thanks, by the way" You say. The oatmeal tastes sweet... like apples and cinnamon. Like an apple pie, but slightly worse because it's oatmeal and not pie...

Pip looks confused. "For what?"

"The compliment" You say.

"What compli-" She stops and gasps, continuing in a harsh whisper. "It's yours?"

You nod as you scoop some more oatmeal into your mouth.

Pip blinks in shock as she slumps into her chair. "Oh fuck I said so many inappropriate things... and it was you" She says. "Why in the hell did you let her mold your dick?"

You shrug. "Sounded like an interesting thing, and I was curious to see if the machine would work" You say. "And no testing could be done until a proper tool was found"

"So you actually like... dropped trou and let her paste it up?" She asks.

You nod. "Tried to convince her to test it out first, but the Goblin's denser than she seems" You say.

Pip laughs, looking burnt out. "Yeah. She talks like a superslut, but she's actually quite timid" She says.

"I noticed" You say.

"So it's actually yours..." She says. "Now I get the irony she was talkin' about... any lady lonely enough to procure her machine gets railed in spirit by the kingdom's most eligible bachelor. Tasty. I like it"

"So exactly what sorts of appropriate things were said?" You ask.

Pip takes a breath, and goes back into her usual relaxed self. "Oh, lots of stuff. I get to cut loose with Gretch" she says.

"Anything in particular?" You ask.

"Saying I knew what I wanted for dessert when I first saw it" She says. "Talk of creamed panties, wanting to go to her supplier, and I also ask if she tested the fit"

"Gotta know these things" You say. "Has she actually used the machine?"

"Not a hundred percent certain, but I'm pretty sure I heard her firin' it up as I was leaving" She says. "So I'm gonna go with yes"

You nod. "So now I'm curious... what was so nice about it?" You ask.

"It just kinda looked like a pleaser" She says. "You ever hear... I forget what the story's called... it's got a thing like 'oh this one is too small, this one is too big, but this one is just right'?"

"Goldilocks and the 3 bears?" You ask.

"No that's not it..." She says. "Anyway, it looked like it'd be a comfortable stretch for the insides, you know? Like you'd feel it, but not in a painful way"

"Huh..." You say. "Is that how most people judge penises?"

She shrugs. "That's enough dirty talk. I've got places to be" She says.

"Where're you headed?" You ask.

"Top secret" She replies with a wink.

...

"Off to borrow the machine?" You ask.

Pip hits your arm. "Don't even start" She says.

You chuckle. "Don't leave without saying goodbye" You say.

"Does flippin' you off out the window count?" She asks.

"It's close enough" You say. "See you later"

Rolled 87 (1d100)

With Pip gone, you chow down the rest of your breakfast and head up to see Frederick.

"Right on time" He says, tossing you a pair of practice swords.

You manage to catch both, despite not expecting both of them to be for you.

Frederick notices your confusion, and continues. "You do fight with two blade, do you not?" He asks. "Today we'll be going over the few dual sword forms..."

The lesson feels like it flies by. As you practice each move, Frederick tells you a bit about how he learned to fight. Apparently he didn't start out wanting to be a soldier. He grew up wanting to be a duelist.

"A duelist?" You ask.

"It has since fallen out of favour, but competitive dueling was quite popular when I was a boy" He says, giving you a few corrections on your movement before continuing. "Back then I idolized all the great fighters..."

"What happened?" You ask.

"A story for another time. We'll do a few more of these, then move onto magic" He says.

When magic practice comes around, you show off your improved accuracy. Frederick takes a note of it, but that's not what he had planned for today.

He wants you to practice shaping your power as it manifests, rather than molding it once it's already formed.

To do this he puts up a target dummy, and tells you to create a ring around its neck...

Shouldn't be too hard.

>writing

You hold out your hand and focus the soul around the neck of the dummy. It's hard to gather the soul and shape it all at once, but you give it a go...

"Looks weak" He says. "Dissipate and try again"

You take a breath and do it over, getting it a little better this time...

Then something clicks in your head and the ring swirls into form, looking every bit as solid as your blade.

"Very good" He says.

"I think I can make it better..." You say, honing the inner edge of the ring until it's as sharp as your blade and bringing it inward.

...

Okay, you can't quite create enough force to cut into it. Maybe...

You expand the ring outward, then bring it back in. Still not a full decap but it leaves a deep, full circle cut around the neck. On a person that would be deadly.

Wanting to test it out further you create more rings at different angles, starting them out big and bringing them inward to cut the dummy.

The ring shape is rigid, so you only get 2 points of contact in non-circular places. But those points cut deep.

"I think I've got the hang of this" You say.

"You really are a quick study" He says. "Can you make other shapes?"

"I think so" You say, holding out your hand and focusing the soul into a-

-cage, creating more rings and poles to match... until your head starts to hurt.

"Okay, maybe that's too much" You say. "Maybe a little less..."

You try again, creating the form all together this time. A simple box cage, big enough to hold a person, and strong enough to keep them in provided they don't do something drastic.

After letting that dissipate and remaking it a few times to get the form down, you try a few other things. Stuff like better shapes for your offensive spells, kite shield bucklers, sword shaped bolts...

Then you get curious to see if you can make a working sword out of just soul, and get to work on that. It's difficult to make the sharpness stop at the handle. Maybe if you did something with the guard...

Frederick is just off to the side. There isn't a whole lot he can do to help here, so he just watches in amusement as you take his planned lesson and run away with it.

It takes a few tries and several narrowly avoided gashes in your hand, but you manage to get a working sword. Not as strong or as mutable as what you get out of your mageblade emitter, but in a pinch it'll do.

Plus if you start firing these instead of bolts not only will it look cool, but the battlefield will be littered with blades only you can use. You're about to become even harder to disarm...

"Well it looks like you've got this figured out" Frederick says. "I thought that would take a bit more pushing..."

"It just kinda clicked" You say. "Kinda like when I was fighting knifey, and the way to use the power I have now just became apparent"

"Interesting" He says. "Knifey was... the creature at the outpost, correct? The one made from the Puppeteer's reclaimed boon?"

You nod. "I was fighting it, trying to gather soul so I'd have enough to get rid of it, and it just occurred to me that I didn't need to pull the soul... I could just make it come to me" You say.

"And here?" He asks.

"Again, it feels like I was just going about it wrong mentally" You say. "I was trying to will it to gather into the form I needed, and it occurred to me that I could just... do it"

"So there's no method? You just... make it take shape?" He asks.

"Pretty much, yeah" You say. "Making things more solid or sharper takes effort, but the shape is just... something I can do"

"Think on that for a while. Perhaps discuss it with your other mage friends. I understand that Miss Emi is quite skilled" He says. "We'll come back to it tomorrow. For now I have to go and see to your cousin"

"Alright" You say.

You say goodbye to Frederick, then go back to what you were doing.

For about 2 hours you mess around with this new ability, seeing what kinds of things you can make and learning what its limitations are.

As you thought, moving separate pieces of a shape is more trouble than it's worth. Smaller shapes lose their details due to the inevitable scattering around the edges. Only way to get rid of that is to sharpen, and for something small that's also not worth the trouble.

When creating a sphere or something like one, it's easier to keep it hollow. The more directions you can put energy into a place on your shape, the easier it is to create and maintain. So full spheres tend to waver and not have the kind of solid form you're looking for, while hollow ones are much stronger.

You do any experiment that comes to your head. You can only maintain about 2 or 3 different shapes, but about 20 of them if they're similar. So you can make and hold 20 blades, but a blade, a shield, and a cage stresses your focus.

When you're satisfied that you know this new power as well as you can without putting it to the test in combat, you decide it's time to do something else.

You still haven't talked to Hella. You wanted to see if Stella ever told her anything about you, now that Ilica's made you curious. You also want to do what Frederick suggested and talk to the other mages... but Pip's out right now, so that just leaves Emi.

Part of you is also wants to put your new found smooching skills to the test... but that's probably not the best idea...

You ask Coral where to find Emi, and Coral points across to another room on this floor.

When you get there, you find something you weren't expecting. It looks like someone built a Serpid playground in here. There are climbable pillars and cross-beams spread throughout the large, high ceilinged room.

There's a small stack of books by the entrance and Emi is up near the top, hanging upside down with her tail wrapped around a beam, reading from a book that she's holding at arm's length below her.

You let out an impressed whistle, which is interesting because you had no idea you could whistle.

"Yuu!" Emi says, marking her book and nimbly slithering down to a spot where she can talk.

"When did all this happen?" You ask.

"Yesterday, apparently" She replies. "You've got a few Serpids, climbers and fliers in your orphanage, so they set this up. I was asked to test it while they find a way to pad the floor"

"Wow" You say. "This actually looks super cool. I might start spending more time here"

"I'm loving it so far" She says. "Dunno who they got to design it, but it's fun to just climb around on..."

You shrug and jump up, springboarding yourself to the nearest crossbar, then hopping from beam to beam until you're up near Emi.

"Okay that is fun" You say.

Emi smiles and slithers on upward, crawling up and around the pillars and beams with speed and a surprising amount of grace. You kinda figured she'd be using her hands a bit more, but she climbs up with nothing but her tail, keeping both hands on her book.

You follow her up, but even with springboards you can't keep up with her. You sit down next to her when you catch up, looking down to admire the view.

"Yeah. Definitely going to be spending more time here" You say. "What are you reading?"

Emi goes to show you, but suddenly looks ashamed. "It's uhh... you might not like this..." She says, showing the cover to you.

"That's... one of Graumer's logs, isn't it?" You ask. "How did you get that?"

"The tribunal separated his works by what might have some scientific merit and what was useless, and gave the useful stuff to the manor" She says. "Belladonna stored them in the next room... Monique and I have been going through them"

"I see..." You say. "Is there anything useful?"

"He... was not a brilliant person... but there is some merit to all this" She says. "His methods, cruel as they were, produced results that us sane people might be able to learn from"

"Such as?"

"Transplanting body parts, like bone or organs" She says. "Some things take a lot to regenerate with magic, to the point where it's just not worth it to even attempt. With his research it might be possible to perfect a way to transfer tissue from a healthy body to a wounded one"

That could be big... taking organ tissue or bone from a healthy body and transferring it to a wounded one instead of trying to fully regenerate the injury...

You sigh. "If his research can be used to help a few people, then perhaps those women didn't die for nothing..." You say. "Anything else of note in there?"

"I'm only working through this book at the moment" She says. "It's kind of heavy stuff knowing that all of this was being done to a living person... the records include the mental states of the subjects, and..."

"Ah... I see" You say, putting a hand on her shoulder and lightly squeezing it. "You know we can get someone to compile all this stuff. Someone who it might not have as much of an effect on... you don't have to put yourself through this"

She shakes her head. "I... I feel like I should" She says. "If I'm going to have my name on the end result, then I should at least read what little Graumer wrote about their pain"

"Well then... you don't have to do it alone" You say.

"Are you sure?" She asks. "I know you're usually pretty busy..."

"Doesn't have to be me specifically... but I've got some time" You say. "And I'm already familiar with the bad stuff, so it shouldn't surprise me"

"Alright..." She says, sliding a little closer.

"So the method you're looking to get out of this... explain it again for me" You say.

"So you know that regenerating tissue takes energy from both the healer and the patient" She asks. "In healing there's something called 'the slip'. It's the point where you've taken too much out of the patient and they start to die. When it happens, there's nothing you can do. The patient is already dead"

"So how does this help?" You ask.

"Say someone's been stabbed in the liver" She says, pointing to where her liver is. It's actually much lower than a normal liver, but that's because Serpid organs are all a bit bigger. "They're losing blood, and therefore life, very quickly. Trying to heal them drains their already fading life, possibly doing more harm than good"

"So it's like... a liver transplant? You take a healthy liver and replace it?" You ask.

She shakes her head. "You just need a piece, and in a pinch- if I'm correct -any healthy person will do" She says. "Instead of using up the patient's life by trying to regenerate the liver, you can take liver tissue from a healthy subject and mend it into the wound. Preferably with the help of another healer, so you don't have to ignore either person for too long"

"Okay, so let's see if I've got this right" You say. "2 healers, 2 people. Person A is injured and fading, person B is not. You take the tissue needed to heal person A off of person B. Then one healer binds that tissue to person A's wounds, while the other heals person B the old fashioned way"

She nods. "There may be issues with tissue rejection, an issue that has already come up several times just in this record, and something I will have to further research..." She says. "But as a short term solution, I could see it being a viable way to avoid the slip"

"How do you know when the slip happens?" You ask.

"I've never felt it, personally. But when you're healing someone you do form a bit of a connection, since you're using your power and theirs" She says. "My grandmother explained it to me, but I didn't really understand what she meant... I hate to admit it, but Naiah did a much better job"

"What did she say?" You ask.

"You feel the energy you're pulling from them drop" She says. "The power mix becomes becomes completely unbalanced and suddenly you're not healing, you're just pushing energy into a soon-to-be corpse"

"That does sound kinda horrible..." You say.

"There's a saying that goes something like 'a seasoned healer always knows a lost cause'... and that's why" She says.

"And you've never felt it?" You ask.

"You're the only person whose life threatening injuries I've had to heal" She says. "And you have such a strong life force that I have trouble keeping up sometimes. It surprised me a bit the first time, when I took out the spikes"

"Really?" You ask.

"I'd healed lesser injuries as part of my training. You need to learn to balance your energy and your patient's. Most of the time it's pretty easy to even out" She says. "But when I healed you, it was like... as soon as I put my magic to you, your energy just sprung forth, and a job I thought would take at least an hour ended up taking a few minutes"

"Wow" You say. "How come you didn't say anything?"

"I wasn't actually sure what was going on..." She says. "At first I thought my grandmother had done something to keep my previous patients' energies level, to make it easier for me to learn. But then I healed another person, and they had a normal energy... then we found out what you are, and I just chalked it up to that and left it alone"

"Huh..." You say. "Any other abnormal things?"

"Nothing that comes to mind" She says.

"Alright... let's get reading"

>1/2

You and Emi read through Graumer's notes, sifting through his cruel hobby for nuggets of useful information.

This experiment log in particular involves Subject 8, a Leprid whose skeleton you had to bury.

The log outlines his attempts to give her "normal" ears, by removing the ear structure from her skull and replacing it with that of a male.

No mention of where he got the male ear structures from. You can only assume the worst there.

You can see what Emi was talking about here. Graumer goes into great detail about his methods, observations, and results. He was successful in removing the rabbit ears and replacing the pieces of skull that were removed, but the bunny's body rejected the new ears, and she suffered an infection that ultimately killed her...

There's precious little about who she was and what she was like, but you make sure to take it all in. There's frequent mentions of her crying... he'd often find her holding hands with Subject 10, who was in the cage next to hers until she died...

"Are you sure you're alright reading this?" Emi asks.

"Yeah... yeah I'll be alright" You reply.

"You've got kind of a grim expression..." She says.

"Really, I'm fine" You say, giving her the best smile you can. "I'm in this with you. If I'm gonna take over this town, I can at least make sure I remember the atrocities of my predecessor"

"Alright, but..." She slithers over and wraps around you. "Good?"

"Ahh... now here's what I really came here for" You say.

Emi giggles, then something hits her. "Wait, the books are down there. Don't get too comfy" She says.

"No worries..." You say, looking down at the stack of books. You create a little cage around them and bring them up, resting them on a flat spot nearby. "New trick"

"Wow" She says. "You can... make cages now?"

"More than just cages" You say, cycling through some of the other stuff you can make. "I was training with Frederick, and the way to shape soul just kinda... clicked"

Emi looks on as you show off. "It just... clicked?" She asks.

"Yeah" You say. "Like it was hard before because I was doing it wrong, and I figured out the right way... but we can talk about that later. I didn't bring those books up here for nothing"

"Right" Emi says. "Hand me the next one..."

>1/2

You and Emi sit up on the high beam and read through every one of Graumer's logs. She stays coiled around you, hugging you from behind and reading over your shoulder as you flip the pages.

By lunchtime you've made it through every one of them. The subject matter leaves you both feeling a little numb, yet hopeful for the good this could bring.

"I just wish he'd write where the donor parts came from" Emi says, groaning as she rests her chin on your head. "So many times he'd have one thing work, and the other thing fail on the same girl..."

"Like Subject 8. The bone transplanted into her skull healed on fine from what I could see, even though it looked a bit weird" You say. "But then the ears got rejected..."

"It must have been the donors" She says. "The method used to attach them... it should have worked"

"Outside factors, maybe?" You ask. "The lab itself was pretty clean, but he only talks about cleaning the cages when there's no one in them"

"Possibly..." She says. "When is the execution?"

"Undecided right now. Tribunal was put on hold thanks to the snow" You say. "You... are you planning on speaking to him?"

She squeezes you. "He's the only one who can fill the gaps in his notes" She says. "Unpleasant as it might be, I'd like to get some answers from his head while it's still attached..."

"He may not talk to you..." You say.

"I have to try" She says. "And he may not talk to anyone, really... take his secrets to the grave out of spite. But there has to be a way..."

You think for a moment, considering something but not quite wanting to say it...

"Madelaine" You say. "If you can't get him to talk, Madelaine could"

"Of course... she's the kind of woman he's been striving for" She says. "I almost don't want to give him the pleasure... or subject Madelaine to him"

"It's your call. She doesn't have to do the questioning. That'd require a lot of prep work and lessons on things that aren't really up her alley" You say. "But if she's willing to help, she could be the carrot to our proverbial stick. Offer him a well supervised visitation with the woman of his dreams, if he gives us what we want"

"If she agreed, she'd probably want something in return..." She says.

"There's a lot we could offer her" You say. "Gold, a manor of her own, unlimited bread sticks, a real fancy table..."

"Breadsti-... what? Why would she want a table?" She asks.

"Inside joke. Kinda slipped out" You say. "It's still up to you. I can put a hold on the execution for now, but I don't want to put it off for too long"

Emi takes a deep breath, putting her cheek on your head as she thinks. "I'll... ask" She says. "See what Madelaine says, see what she'd want in return, then decide"

"Alright. I'll get a message off to the tribunal, ask them not to remove his head until it's no longer useful to us" You say.

"When you say it like that, it makes us sound like the bad ones..." She says.

"We can read about Subject 4 again if you need a reminder of who we're dealing with" You say.

Emi shivers. Subject 4 was resistant to the drugs Graumer used to numb his victims. Rather than find another way, he decided to start wearing earplugs.

"No. I think that's fine" She says. "As long as we can make something happen..."

"Well then I'll go get in touch with the tribunal" You say.

"Alright" She says. "You do that. I'll share what we learned with Monique, so she doesn't feel the need to read through these as well"

"Good call" You say.

Emi gives you a squeeze, than unwraps herself. When you're free you just slip right off and springboard down, using your cage to bring the books to you as Emi slithers down the nearest pillar. She takes the logs and heads out to find Monique, while you go to see Belladonna.

"Something you need?" Belladonna asks when you reach her office.

"You can contact the tribunal, right?" You ask.

She nods. "What for?"

"I need a hold put on Graumer's execution" You say. "Emi is working on something with the stuff she gleaned from his logs, but there's some important information that isn't in there. We're hoping he'll be able to fill in the blanks for us..."

"I see..." Belladonna says. "And... what sort of research is she doing?"

"Not his kind of research. Emi is looking to find a way to heal people who don't have the strength for it by using tissue taken from another person" You say. "We just need Graumer to tell us where he got the body parts he used for his experiments. After that, his head is of no further use and can be removed"

"I will do that right now" She says, pulling a bit of message paper to her. "Not sure if they'll agree with your request, but if there's truly some good to be done by keeping him alive a while longer..."

"There is. Emi can figure out how to make this work, and all those poor girls won't have suffered for nothing" You say. "Make sure they understand that"

"I don't doubt your skills, but... will he talk?" She asks.

"Depends on his mood" You say. "We've got a way that we think will loosen his tongue"

Belladonna looks put off. "You're not planning on torturing him..." She says.

"Oh, no. We're gonna call Madelaine up from the front. You've seen her, right? Pretty much his vision of female perfection" You say. "Entice him with something like getting a prison lunch date with her before he dies, but only if he gives us what we want. Should work"

"That could work... if your friend is willing" She says.

"Workin' on that. Might need to butter her up a bit, but she'll help" You say. "But until we either get what we need, or see that he's hellbent on taking it to his grave, I need his head to stay where it is"

"Alright" She says.

"And if worst comes to worst... do I even have to make this a request? Would just telling them not to execute him yet be overstepping?" You ask.

"It's not unprecedented... the tribunal usually doesn't answer to the lord, but under extraordinary circumstances the lord may intervene" She says. "Let us see what they say before doing anything like that"

"Good idea" You say. "When do you think they'll get back to you?"

"They should be in session right now, so their reply should be quick" She says.

"Cool. I'll be up eating lunch in the dining room if you want to notify me by whisper" You say. "If I decide to go elsewhere, I'll let you know"

She smiles and gives you a slight nod. You thank her and head out.

You and Emi arrive in the dining hall at the same time, both of you asking what took the other so long in unison.

...

"I'll go first" You say. "Bit of a longer discussion with Belladonna than I expected. Went into some legal stuff. You?"

"Sent off the letter to Madelaine. Told her nothing is set in stone just yet, and asked if she'd be willing to spend time around Graumer if it comes to that" She says.

"Now we're both waiting for a reply... though mine will probably come sooner" You say, motioning toward the door. "After you"

Emi smiles and slithers in as you follow behind. Ilica and Cheska are here, along with Vivi and Liz...

"Isn't Liz usually with Hella?" You ask as you walk over to a seat.

"She left like 5 minutes ago. Wanted to talk to Lola about something in private" Ilica says. "Didn't sound urgent, but she was a little wound up"

It's probably just girl stuff. Hella and Lola are both rabbits. It makes sense that if Hella were having trouble with something, Lola is the one she would gravitate to.

You sit down and decide to wait it out. Worst case scenario is that she's heard you and Lola doing things, and the truth of your strange relationship with the chocolate bunny comes to light. No biggie.

"Where'd you two run off to anyway?" Ilica asks. "I looked around a bit and couldn't find you"

"We were up on the top floor studying Graumer's experiment logs" Emi says.

"Really? Why?" Ilica asks. "I thought those were all so bad that they wanted to burn them"

You shake your head. "There's some merit in them. Emi thinks she can come up with a new healing method using what he learned" You say.

Ilica stops you. "Best of luck. Don't try to explain it" She says. "Healing and anatomy and stuff is all not my cup of tea"

"You sure?" Cheska asks. "I'm sure the hunters would appreciate you pickin' up a little healing"

"The hunters will appreciate me for putting bolts into brains" She says, miming pulling a trigger. "I'll spend my time learning to do that better"

With that your lunch arrives, and you realize that you're much hungrier than you expected. So you turn your attention to the food...

>1/2
>>
As you finish up the last of your lunch, Belladonna's whispers fill the room...

"The tribunal has agreed to delay the execution" Her disembodied voice says. "They will wait for you to say when to go forward with it"

Reactions to the sudden voice are varied. Ilica has probably experienced this before back when she worked here, because it doesn't seem to bother her at all. Emi also looks pretty calm.

On the other hand, Cheska looks extremely weirded out, Vivian is looking around trying to spot where it came from, and Liz does a panicked lap around the table that ends with her going up your shirt.

"What in the hell was that?" Cheska asks.

"That was Belladonna" Ilica says.

"Why are you surprised? You were there when she told me about her voice power" You say.

"Hearing about it and hearing it are two different things" She replies.

"Maybe you should have warned us..." Emi says.

"Yeah... probably" You say, writing a quick 'thanks' and sending it off to Belladonna, before starting to try and coax Liz back out of your shirt.

"Whose execution was she talking about... Graumer's?" Ilica asks.

Emi nods. "We need him to fill in some gaps in his logs" She says.

"Ahhh... well, best of luck" She says, her ear turning towards the door. " Oh, Hella's back"

You turn towards the door, and you can faintly hear Lola and Hella talking about something...

Sounds like Lola is trying to assure Hella of something...

"What are they saying?" Cheska asks.

"I think Hella's wearing something new that makes her nervous" Ilica says. "Could be... hmm..."

You turn away from Ilica's ears as Hella is suddenly shoved into view. Her face is bright red, she's standing stiff as a board, and her ears are both straight up... and she's wearing one of Lola's uniforms. It fits her pretty well, and it looks pretty good...

"Tadaaaaaaaaa~!" Lola says, as she pops in and hugs Hella from the side, pressing her cheek into the nervous bunny's. "I present maid Hella! Isn't she cute?"

You look Hella over carefully, then nod your head and snap your fingers. "She's hired"

"B-but I just-"

"Come here, Hella. Give your new boss a hug" You say, standing in front of her with your arms open.

Hella looks completely overwhelmed, surrendering this one to you like she doesn't have a choice... even though she really does.

"Welcome to the team" You say, embracing her tightly. "I think I'll put you in the kitchens. Does that sound alright?"

She struggles with her words, eventually letting out a defeated "Y-yes sir"

You see Lola really having trouble containing herself beside you. She finally can't take it and decides to break it up. "Alright, come on. That was fun, but let's get you back in your own clothes..." She says, taking Hella by the hand and leading her away.

"I would hire you in a heartbeat though" You call out to her. "Think about it. I'd love to have you on as a cook"

Hella's ears perk right back up and she lets out a little squeak, getting a giggle out of Lola as she continues on her way...

"That was fun" You say to the girls still in the dining room.

"You aren't seriously gonna make her work for you, are you?" Ilica asks.

"Not unless she wants to" You say. "Anyways, I've got some work to do on the thing for Alisette. So I'll see you guys later"

"Want us to take Liz?" Ilica asks.

You pull out your collar and look down your shirt, meeting eyes with Liz, whose tongue flicks out as she reaches up and puts a hand on your face.

"She's fine" You say with a shrug. "If she gets in the way too much I can always bring her back"

You say goodbye to the them and head to your room. The molding stuff is still there, so you take the time to clean out the molds of Alisette's mouth...

Liz pokes her head out from your collar and watches quietly. She feels kinda cold right now, and it's been a while since you got any time with her so you hug her and play with her whenever your hands are free.

After the molds are clean, you grab the modeling stuff. Like the paste it smells kinda funny, but at least this one doesn't have to go in someone's mouth.

You pour it into the mold, and cover it to let it set...

...

You guess that's all you can do for now. Man, you thought this would take much longer.

"Okay. Now what?" You ask Liz. "Where do you wanna go?"

Liz points at you, her tongue flicking out again.

"With me?" You ask.

She nods.

"Alright then... Where do I wanna go?"

You should probably go find Hella. Apologize for teasing her if she had a problem with it, and maybe hang out for a bit.

With Coral pointing the way, you head up to Hella's room. The door is shut when you get there, and you can hear voices inside... sounds like her and Lola.

You knock on the door, and hear a surprised squeal coming from inside, followed by the sound of someone falling.

...

"E-everything alright in there?" You ask.

The door opens just wide enough for Lola to poke her head out. "Yep. Everything's fine, sir" She says with a wink. "Just a bit of girl talk"

"What was all that banging?" You ask.

"Weren't expecting visitors, so you caught Hella off guard" She says, winking more frequently and more obviously.

You nod. You aren't dumb. You can take a hint.

"Alright. Just wanted to let you know that I've still got Liz" You say, winking back at Lola.

"D-did you want me to take her?" Hella asks.

"Oh, no. I came to notify you that she's mine now and you can't have her back" You say. "Byyyyye"

Lola giggles as you head off. You figure you'll ask her what that was all about later, if it's not a secret.

...

Is she allowed to keep secrets from you? This is all going on in your house after all...

...

Nah. It's not like it's a harmful secret or anything. Just girl stuff.

You figure you'll head up and see how Liz likes the Serpid playground, maybe do some jumpin' around of your own...

The big room is empty when you arrive, so you coax Liz out of your shirt. She does poke her head out the bottom and slither her way back up, wrapping around you over your shirt instead of under it.

"See this room?" You ask. "This was made just for girls like you"

Liz points to herself.

"Yeah! You!" You say in a cheerful tone. "Can you climb?"

Liz turns to look at the nearest pillar, tongue flicking around rapidly. She she looks back at you and points to it, so you get close enough for her to climb onto it and watch.

She's not as graceful as Emi and she doesn't have as much tail so her grip's not quite as strong, but she's still a good climber.

You decide to follow her around, making sure you're nearby in case of a slip...

>1/2
>>
Your supervision isn't as necessary as you expected. Liz only slips once, when she tries to switch over to a pillar that's a bit too far out of her reach.

Aside from that, you spend most of your time chasing her around. Just as she's not as graceful, she's also not as quick as Emi. Mostly because she doesn't have as much confidence in her climbing abilities, but when she gets that you'll definitely have trouble keeping up.

Fun time ends when she gets tired and comes back to coil around your stomach again for a nap.

Instead of leaving, you decide to just hang here for a bit and get some more practice in with your abilities. You can't move around much because you don't want to disturb Liz, but there's still much you can do.

Eventually Hella shows up, walking into the room and looking around.

"H-helloooo" Hella says, her ears turning about and searching the room for sound. She looks everywhere but up. "Emi said he would be up here..."

You smile and form something that'll fit snug around your feet and legs, letting you float around.

...

You don't know why you didn't try this earlier. It feels kind neat. You float over her and turn upside down, slowly moving down while trying not to laugh.

When Hella turns to leave, you move your head in right behind hers.

She tenses up when she feels you behind her, slowly, stiffly turning her head around.

"Boo" You say when she finally sees you.

Her eyes go wide, and all the colour drains from her face as she collapses. You have to flip over very quickly to catch her, and you almost don't make it.

...

"Okay maybe that wasn't the best idea" You say, trying to shake Hella awake. "Helloooooooo, Hellaaaaaaaaa"

...

"Definitely not the best idea" You say, carrying her to somewhere you can sit down. You place her head in your lap and make a little fan out of soul to cool her off.

...

Unless that's not what you're supposed to do when someone faints. If you're not going to learn not to surprise Hella like this, you should probably learn how to help someone who's fainted...

When she finally opens her eyes, you give her a smile. "Welcome back. Sorry for spooking you like that" You say.

She blinks off her confusion as her brain kicks back into gear. Then she gasps and points a finger at you. "You were upside down!" She says.

"That's just something I can do now" You say, scratching your head. "I was showing off a bit. Sorry"

"Oh..." She says, still pointing at your face.

...

You dart forward and gently bite her finger. You can see the blood returning to her face as she pulls it back. "Feeling better?"

"A-a little" She says, fidgeting. "I might need to lay down a bit longer..."

You chuckle and run a hand through her hair. "Smooth. You got me" You say. "What made you want to try on the maid uniform?"

"I thought they looked cute, so I asked Lola to try hers on because we're the same size..." She says. "I wasn't planning on being out in the open with it on..."

"Well it certainly looks good" You say. "And you were quick to get into character, calling me sir and everything"

"Y-yeah..." She says.

You sit for a few more minutes, quietly playing with Hella's hair as she "recovers". Luckily none of this has managed to wake Liz, who is still napping peacefully.

"Hang on. What did you mean by that?" She asks. "When you said 'you got me'?"

"I meant 'I know exactly what you're trying to do, and I'm going to play along'" You say. "Just relax. This is kinda nice for me too..."

"Am I really so easy to see through?" She asks.

"No, you look pretty opaque to me" You say, chuckling when she pouts. "You are pretty obvious, yeah"

She looks disappointed to hear that, so you reach down and stretch her lips up into a smile.

"But obvious is fine sometimes" You say. "In fact the way you try and fail to hide your emotions is pretty endearing"

"Oh... s-so-... so... d-d-do you... uhh... do you like me?" She asks.

She looks deflated. "I'm sensing a 'but' somewhere in there..." She says.

"But I have a lot going on at the moment, so you're looking for something I can't really commit to" You say.

"I see..." She says. "You know, Lola said you'd say that"

You chuckle. "That's because I told her" You say. "Is that what you guys were talking about?"

"It isn't all we were talking about..." She says.

"The rest is a secret?" You ask.

She nods.

"That's fine" You say, still playing with her hair. "Mind if I ask you the same question?"

"Do I like you?" She asks. "You already know the answer, don't you?"

You nod. "But it'd be interesting to hear it" You say. "I don't think anyone has actually come out and been honest with me about this kind of thing..."

"Oh... well I do" She says. "And I understand how you feel. I've heard managing a relationship can be a lot of work, especially when you've got so much else on your plate"

"Thanks" You say.

I have to admit I had a few feelings of concern. She seemed to go from fear to "I love my job!" a bit too fast. Also, while I think it's probably true Yuu was who got seduced if anyone, it seemed a bit questionable to push him to think that others were manipulating him. I'm not sure what her motivation is in teaching Yuu how to hit on women like a pro is either. We've had a few mixed messages on how acceptable it is for nobility to mess around, but this seems like big step up from that. She's certainly not teaching him to find a single wife. If that was her motivation, then we'd be learning how to charm if anything.

Well she said it before didn't she?
She actually really enjoyed her job back when she was respected and not treated like garbage.
It's what she was trained to do all her life, and while some may see it as dirty work, it's something she takes pride in.
To me she just seems to be really eager to get back to doing what she's best at for someone that genuinely appreciates it.

Fair enough point. And I admittedly can't think of any motive for her to do something untoward. Might ask her if she thinks us catching more girl is a good thing or not and why. Either for useful advice or just to see how she responds. I'll note that most of the people we have got relationship advice from so far have been rather ill-suited. I like Altea and all, but man did she cause some incidents with her own love life.

>>3045632
I think this is going a bit far at this point.

"Yeah. It kinda did" You say. "I think I'll go confess my feelings to everyone else, too"

She looks up at you and pouts.

...

"Move your head" You say.

"No" She replies.

"Fiiiiine" You say, going back to playing with her hair. "You have very soft hair, by the way"

"Thank you" She replies. "I think you've said that before, but it's nice to hear"

"I've got some other compliments, if you'd like to hear them" You say. "Stick with me and I'll make you feel so good about yourself that your head will pop off"

She laughs nervously. "I-I'm fine just knowing my hair is soft, thanks" She says.

"Darn..." You say. "Lola say anything else?"

"A few things..." She says.

You chuckle. "She's a smart girl... definitely much smarter than I gave her credit for, at first" You say.

Hella shakes her head. "You're smart. She's wise" She says. "Big difference"

"Oh?" You ask.

"She has experience that you and I don't. But if you asked her to... I dunno... write a paper on how soul can be used to disrupt a person's mana flow..." She says. "Not her field"

"Yeah that's-... hey. I wrote that paper" You say.

"I know. You told me" She says. "I-I mean... I was present while you were talking to Pip about it... on the airship going north"

"Talking at Pip about it. I don't even think she was listening" You say.

"It's kind of a dry subject... but you sounded kinda passionate about it, so I figured I would try and listen in" She says. "I don't think I understood most of it, but I remembered that much"

"I could teach you" You say.

"Th-that's okay. It's not really something I'm that interested in" She says.

"Yeah, I'm probably not that great of a teacher for it either" You say. "Plus it's not something you could actually use..."

>1/2

You hang with Hella for a bit. As fun as it is to tease her and make her embarrassed, she's actually pretty witty when she's relaxed.

When Liz awakens from her nap and starts bugging Hella, you decide it's time to get up.

"I kinda feel like baking cookies" She says, stretching herself out as Liz climbs up her leg. "Can I borrow your ovens?"

"Of course" You say. "On one condition"

"I'm not putting the uniform back on" She says, holding the little Serpid as she reaches Hella's chest.

"Curses..." You say. "Can they be chocolate chip?"

"I was gonna make something with molasses..." She says. "Patty said there's a whole bunch that never really gets used, so I wanted to use it"

"Aww..." You say. "No chocolate chips, no maid Hella..."

She puts a hand on your shoulder. "You'll have to make do with your other... however many maids" She says.

"27" You say.

She smiles. "You'll survive" She says.

"I should check on my mold" You say. "I've been working on a thing for Alisette. The model of her teeth should have set by now"

"I hope it works out! She's a real sweetheart" Hella says. "Almost makes me want to learn Antolian just so I can talk to her..."

"I considered it. But she'll speak our language soon enough, so just be patient" You say. "Now go make those cookies. Let me know when they're done so I can test them"

Hella giggles. "I will" She says.

You give Hella a hug and then go your separate ways, letting her take Liz along.

When you reach your room, you uncover your project and find that it's now dry. Pulling the model out, you see no bubbles, hiccups, or cracks... it looks perfect.

Now you can move on with step 3, which means finding another child with a mouth that's around the same size as Alisette's...

Going by memory and estimating, you'd say that a few of the orphans and maybe Lily fit the bill. You could also wing it and try to sculpt something...

Lily might not have a perfect fit, but one of these kids must... you figure you'll check the children first. You don't need a perfect match, as it's only the front 6 teeth on the top and bottom that were filed. But whatever you make has to fit well enough to last a couple years...

Now that you think about it, it would probably be best to do the teeth individually since they're going to fall out. You don't want this entire effort being invalidated as soon as the first one comes loose.

...

You'll think about that once you have the second mold.

The kids are in class right now, which means they're all in one place. Haley, the insectoid maid, is the one teaching them. You pull her aside for a second and tell her what you're looking for.

After assuring the kids that she isn't in trouble, Haley relays your request to them. They all know about Alisette, and they all seem pretty happy to help.

You go around the room, and one by one you look at their teeth... there's a few that could work, but only one perfect match. It's the one you recognize as Sally, the white Ursid who nailed you in the head with a snowball and set off that entire snowball fight.

Now it's your turn to assure her she's not in trouble, as she thinks this is some elaborate punishment for said snowball.

Satisfied that she's got what you need, you stand up. You can either take the bear back to your room and do this there, bring your molding stuff here and let the other kids see, or maybe put this off until after class...

Though it looks like it'll be pretty tough for Haley to get everybody back on topic now...

You ruffle the little bear's hair, and tell everyone you'll be right back. Then you go back to your room and grab your stuff, stopping a maid along the way and asking her to bring a pitcher of water, a glass, and a bucket to the class room.

The kids all look curious as you set your things up, listening intently as you explain what your plan is. You even pass let them pass around the model of Alisette's teeth, so long as they promise not to drop it. Haley stays within arm's reach, just in case.

"Promise this isn't 'cause I threw a snowball at you?" Sally asks, eyeing the mold container apprehensively.

"Promise" You say. "And if you think I'm mad because you threw a snowball, talk to my friend Cheska. She tried to roast me with fireballs once, and we're good friends now"

"Really?" Another kid asks.

"Yup" You say, writing up a quick request to Hella, asking her to make enough cookies for the kids as well, and sending it off with Coral. "Now, this is gonna taste a little weird. But it won't take long, and you can wash it all out. Okay?"

"Okay" She says.

"Now say ahhhhh" You say, holding the container up.

Sally complies, and just like you did with Alisette you put it in, and press it up.

While you wait for the mold to set, you explain a bit more to the kids... but the prospect of dental prosthesis no longer hold their attention. They want to know more about the stuff you've done.

Well... now's as good a time as any for storytime. You'll have to make whatever story you tell tame so it doesn't bother the kids, and short so it keeps their attention. But you've got a few good ones...

Assuming its the story involving the wolf and Carthac thats pretty good story, especially the part were we took down that rampaging beast
>>
"Okay, so I was out with some allies in the Lubrian countryside, showing them this weird cave temple I found..." You say, leading off the story of how you met Cheska.

None of them knew about the Lubrian civil war or the Inquisition, so you've gotta fill them in a bit on that when they ask why Storm tried to fight you...

"So the church is bad?" One of them asks.

"No, the church is not bad" You say. "Priestess Lianna is one of the nicest people I know. But the Inquisition was a bad part of the church..."

"Like supper yesterday" Another one says. "We had peas, and potatoes, and chicken, and I don't like peas, but it didn't make everything bad"

"Exactly" You say. "The Inquisition were like peas. Bad on their own, and they just happened to be a part of the church"

That seemed to make them understand, so you continue onto when the unarmored Dangol showed up, how you killed it, and then it's onto the Legion showing up...

"So we hid in a bush that Gerard made, but the Lupid demon could smell us" You say, taking away the first container and making sure Sally's doing okay before putting the bottom container in. "So I figured I could jump out and buy us some time. You see I'd met Carthac before and stole his spear..."

So now you have to tell that story as well... thankfully it's a short one, and you can get back on track.

You describe the ensuing battle in as much detail as you feel comfortable giving, playing out the funnier parts like how you stole Carthac's spear a second time, how you threw the Lupid at Cheska to throw off her concentration...

"But I couldn't keep it up forever. I wasn't as strong back then as I am now, so they started getting the better of me, and the other demons were attacking my friends... but just when things looked bad, we heard some booms from above" You say. "And we looked up, and there was the Archer's Pride. A huge airship bristling with deadly weapons, and filled with deadly hunters, who were all coming down to help us. What could the demons do but run away, tails between their legs?"

>1/2
>>
"Is that Carthac guy gonna come back and try to get you?" One of the kids asks.

"No. I actually put him down when he came and tried to attack Locke" You say. "So nobody has to worry about him"

"What about the wolf?" Another asks.

"She joined the big tournament to get a chance to try and kill Queen Lyvia" You say. "Faced me in the finals, and I put her down as well"

"Is Cheska still evil?" Another asks.

"She is not. We cured her missing heart back when the Legion tried to take this place back from us" You say. "She's the goodest of the good guys now"

"Are those evil church guys still around?" Another asks.

"No. They fooled around with some powers they shouldn't have and turned themselves into monsters" You say. "Which we then put down"

"Where is that Storm guy?"

"Out at Riverhold. We're friends now. He's a cool guy" You say, finally pulling out the second mold. "Alright. That looks like it for story time, kids"

That gets a collective "Awwwww" from them.

"Now now. I can come back another time and tell you guys a different one. But right now, I have work to do" You say. "You guys have fun now, and don't give Haley too much trouble"

>>
>>3046023
They've been living in a Legion controlled Lutain for almost as long as they can remember. You're a dude that fights Legionnaires. That automatically makes you a cool in their book.
>>
Just a random thought I had while bored, out of all the different universe Yuus, does one who is an expert at reaching out and borrowing powers from his other selves exist? A Yuu whose mind is so stable and immune to outside interference that calling upon the others has no effect on his mental health whatsoever.

If you want the cool spin on it, a Yuu who has little power on his own but can overcome pretty much any problem by borrowing the right power from the right Yuu.

If you want a depressing spin on it, a Yuu who gets so engrossed in seeing the lives his other versions live that he shuts himself in and neglects his own reality, spending all his days just meditating on the memories of the other Yuus inside his head.
>>
After making sure Sally was okay and that your molds would all work, you left the class room. Nobody is really doing anything right now, so you decide to check out some the rooms you haven't visited since you got back.

One such room appears to be a study of some sort, with a reading chair, a desk, and a well stocked bookshelf. Looking through the books here, they all actually look incredibly interesting.

There's one on Hunter weapon crafting using monster parts, one on unique magic from around the continent, one about and expedition to the Treeborn Cradle...

...

These are all right up your alley. Put together with the old history books Fran has, and you could probably spend the next several months just reading.

But this stuff couldn't have been here before... Graumer's interests may have lead him to the history books in search of writings about his ideal woman, but the rest of this is not what you'd expect to find in his collection.

Out of curiousity you go out to find a maid. Luckily Lola is passing right by so you just stop her and ask.

"Oh, that was me" She says.

"Really?" You ask.

She nods. "While you were out, Belladonna put me in charge of transforming this place into your home" She says. "That meant putting all of Graumer's stuff in storage, and bringing in things we thought you would want"

"Like books?" You ask.

"And orphans... that was your idea, but we made it happen" She says. "I went around and asked anyone who knew you about your interests. Then I scoured book catalogs and pestered the scholars until I had a list that I could fill a bookshelf with!"

"Wow... thanks" You say. "How come you never told me?"

"I-... well I uhh... I was supposed to tell you when you arrived" She says.

"Ah. I see" You say. "Well anyway, good job"

"Thank you~" She says, curtsying politely. "I aim to please"

Though I wouldn't phrase it that way. I'd instead ask her more along the lines:

"Oh, there was something I wanted to ask you... it's about the lessons" You say.

"Oh, sure" She says, getting in a bit closer so you can speak quietly. "Is there a problem?"

"I dunno... are you sure it's okay to be teaching me these things?" You ask. "I'm not sure if I should be learning to fool around if I-"

"Silly silly. I'm not teaching you to fool around" She says. "We talked about this. I'm teaching you how to knock your eventual wifes' socks off, and managing your needs until that day comes. Nothing in there about you going off and using my lessons willy nilly"

"Oh" You say. "Yeah, that does make sense..."

She smiles. "Any other problems?" She asks.

"Well there is this little part of me that's a bit paranoid about how quickly you've gone from 'one of the maids' to 'my closest confidant' in just a few nights... but it's probably nothing to worry about" You say. "Right?"

"Oh, no no, sir. You've stumbled upon my secret master plan to install myself at your side by being so agreeable and pleasing that no other woman could ever compare" She says jokingly, before giggling and kissing you on the cheek. "We'll talk tonight about it tonight"

"It's not really a big issue..." You say.

"Not true" She says. "A man in your position has every right to be suspicious of someone like me, so it's best to clear the air of any unpleasantness now before it taints what we've got now"

"Alright then... tonight" You say.

"See you then. In the meantime, enjoy your collection" She says. "I couldn't make heads or tails of half of it, but you're a lot smarter than I am"

You decide to pick out the book on unique magic, lay back on the couch, and get reading.

You're immersed almost immediately. It goes further in depth about the how and why of these things than you ever thought would be necessary. In any other subject such an in depth analysis might be kinda dry, but here it hooks you in and keeps you reading...

Apparently when a normal person casts Seep, they feel a growing sense of discomfort that becomes nearly unbearable after 10 seconds or so. A blue devil feels nothing, as their bodies are so well attuned to the dark that they feel at home in it. As such a devil can literally live in the darkness, only emerging to eat, if necessary.

There's a whole ten pages on Sirens and how their songs can affect the emotions of those who hear them, an ability you never even knew they had. Apparently all Sirens use lightning magic, and are able to project a faint electrical field with very little effort. The electrical field does absolutely nothing on its own, but when the Siren sings the field reacts and can match the listener's emotions to their own.

You find chapters on Gnomes and their metal crafting, tunneling spiders like Kanzka, windspeaker elves, that tribe from the south who can cast silence, how Angels and Dark Angels can transform their wings into pure energy...

You're so thoroughly engrossed that you only barely register Vivian hopping up into your lap and curling up for a nap.

"Oh, hey..." You say, pulling off the note that's been stuck to the kitten's back.

It's from Ilica, it says: I'll be upstairs working on magic with Emi. Didn't want to wake the kitten since she was ready for a nap. You're on Vivi duty for now since you looked relaxed and quiet.

...

You look down at the purring, sleeping kitten, then at the note...

This elemental attunement thing is kind of interesting.
>>
>writing

... and you shrug then go back to reading, holding the book up with a bit of improvised soul so you have a hand free to pet the kitty.

Looking through this book, there's a lot about elemental attunement, but nothing on what that is. So you sit up and look over at the bookshelf, spotting one that's about that very thing. You can't move without waking Vivi, so you work out some way to use soul to bring it over.

Alright. 'Elemental Affinities and Attunements'. Here goes.

This one's a bit drier than the last, but still useful. It's an in depth study on the cause of people's elemental affinities. You never thought about it, but this is a good place to research. Nobody really knows why people are split into elements the way they are.

While some people, most being women, have elemental affinities based on their species, others get them from their more powerful parent...

Okay, skip skip skip... interesting subject but not what you're here for.

Here we go. Attunements.

Attunements decide how easily one can use their element. So Devils always have a very strong attunement to their element, which is what lets them start learning at such a young age.

However, a strong attunement makes it difficult to use mixed magic. Meaning a Red Devil will find casting something like Steam Burst incredibly difficult, while a regular fire mage might find it easier than casting pure fire magic.

...

Okay, this is pretty neat. So by that logic, Cheska is such an incredibly powerful fire mage because of how strongly attuned Red Devils are. But pure fire magic is all she can really do. On the flip side, Monique might never be able to harness the kind of power the Cheska can, but she has an easier time mixing her power with nature magic in order to heal.

...

Oh, sweet. There's an entire chapter here on the Metal affinity of Gnomes. Let's see what's in here...

By the time Vivian starts to stir, you've got a pretty nice stack of books next to you. You're not sure how Lola managed to put together such a comprehensive collection on stuff that she doesn't understand herself, but whenever you found something new you wanted to look into, you looked up and found a book on it waiting for you.

...

You'll have to do something for her to thank her... but you can think about that later. Right now you've got a kitty who's about to be awake and looking for attention, so you start putting the books away with your soul. They're much harder to put away than they are to take out, since they keep coming open when you pick them up.

"Mew" Vivi says as she sits up.

"Yes. You're awake" You say. "How was your nap?"

Vivi licks her paws.

"Shall we go find your sister?" You ask.

"Mew" She says again.

"I don't understand mew" You say.

Vivi blinks, then paws at your hand. "Ssssssissssssss" She says.

"Sis?" You ask.

"Sis" She says.

"Well alright. Let's go see sis" You say.

"Ssssssssssss..." Vivi says as you pick her up.

You quickly put the rest of the books away, and head upstairs to the practice room.

Inside you see Ilica practicing wind blades, trying to slice through Emi's ice pillars. The pillars are thick and tough, so she's having an understandably hard time. Despite that, there's some pretty hefty chunks being taken out every time she shoots.

When Vivi spots Ilica, she paws at your face and points over at her.

"Call her" You say, holding Vivi up in the air.

"Meeeeew!" Vivi calls out.

Ilica's ear turns to you, then her head. "Oh, look who's awake" Vivi says. "Sorry for dumping her on you like that"

You shrug and set Vivi on the groun so she can run over to her sister. "No biggie. Made a for a relaxing reading buddy" You say.

Ilica shoots Vivian up into her arms with an airburst, hugging the kitten and rubbing her cheeks on her. "Welcome back little Vivi. Did you enjoy your nap?" She asks.

"Meawr" Vivi says.

"You did? Great!" Ilica says, laughing as she lets Vivi settle in. "What were you reading anyway? You seemed pretty engrossed when I peeked in.

"Magic stuff. Unique magic, affinities, attunements, that kinda stuff" You say. "You learn anything?"

"Just that ice is dang hard to cut through" Ilica says. "I've tried everything and I can't seem to get through these stupid things"

"You'll get it eventually, I'm sure" You say.

"Eventually might be a long ways away..." She says. "Why don't you try? Maybe I can learn something"

You shrug and turn to the least damaged ice block, forming a sharp crescent blade above your head and launching it forward.

The blade doesn't go all the way through the block when it hits, but it doesn't dissipate either. You simply keep pushing it forward from the point of impact until it goes all the way through.

"Oh. I never thought of that" Ilica says.

"You've been letting your blades go as soon as they hit?" You ask.

She nods. "I'll remember this for tomorrow" She says. "But right now it's dinner time"

Vivi's ears perk up at the word 'Dinner'. "Mew?"

"Yeah! Time for food" Ilica says. "Your favourite part of the day! You comin' Emi?"

"Of course" Emi says.

"Oh, and I was gonna go back out and visit the priestess after supper, if you wanted to join me" Ilica says.

"Maybe. I want to figure out what's happening with Mom and Pip first. They should've left by now..." You say.

"Well... can you still give me a ride?" She asks.

"Oh, of course" You say. "Might not stay, but I'll leave Coral with you"

"Awesome" Ilica says.

"And speaking of Coral, I should get in touch with those two..." You say.

>1/2

Coral comes back with a reply from Altea just as dinner is coming in. Apparently her airship will be leaving for the front tonight, and she'll be dropping by sometime after dinner with Pip to see you before she goes.

"I thought they were leaving much earlier" Emi says.

You shrug. "That was their plan. Wouldn't surprise me if they ran into a whole bunch of delays" You say. "So I guess I might skip out on seeing Lianna... drop you off and come back. Maybe go back for a bit when mom is gone"

"Works for me" Ilica says. "Kinda sad that Pip's goin', but we'll see her soon enough"

"When are we going there, anyway?" Emi asks. "Not that I'm impatient..."

"Once the airships are up and we're ready to march on the Spire" You say.

"Can't imagine anyone's looking forward to marching through the snow" Ilica says.

"Northerners already did on the way here" You say. "But if it ends up being too rough, we may have to bunker down for the winter... which I don't really want to do"

"Yeah. That gives the Legion a lot of time to prep for us" Ilica says. "If the northerners are so good in the cold, could we like... leave the Lubrians to defend while the northerners attack?"

"That might cause a bit of dissent... but you never know. If it's what we have to do, we'll do it" You say. "I don't think giving the Legion a bunch of worry free months is a good idea, and I'm sure I can find others who think the same thing"

"You sure you need any others?" Ilica asks. "If I had your power, I'd go take a shot at claiming the spire, just to see if I could"

"I'd need maybe like... 1 or 2 other people" You say. "Someone sneaky who can get me somewhere I can do some damage, and maybe a healer... just in case"

...

"You know it kinda sounds like us you're talkin' about there, and I realize the ridiculousness of that idea because the first thing I thought was what a suicide mission that would be" She says.

"I still can't really bring out everything I've got while I'm in close quarters. Too much collateral damage" You say. "I'm working on that with Frederick though. Hopefully I'll be skilled enough to do the whole 'overwhelming force' thing in a controlled way by the time I move out"

"Yeah, I doubt they'd ever try and meet us in the field" Emi says.

"They definitely don't have the numbers to take us on directly" Ilica says. "Even discounting Prince beams over here"

"I was kind of wondering about that" Emi says. "They must know that they're outmatched..."

"They won't surrender" You say. "They're not stupid enough to believe we'd offer them mercy at this point. I have no doubts that they'll fight to the last, and do their best to bleed us for every mile we take"

"But they must think that somehow they could win" Emi says. "Otherwise, why not band their forces in the most defensible spot. Why spread out the way they have?"

"You think they're stalling..." You say. "Perhaps they think their god will come save them"

"Always a possibility... the Black God has proven itsel to be a bit more present than the trinity..." Emi says.

"I do kinda worry about how close their main base is to the Treeborn Cradle" You say. "They gained that freaky mind control boon after I beat Raligos... I don't want to think about what they could do if they somehow managed to breach the Cradle"

"Not much we can do about that right now" Ilica says. "We're kinda committed to getting Stella back right now"

"Right. First Stella, then the Hunters can get a piece" You say.

"They're all chompin' at the bit for the go-ahead from Castor" She says. "As soon as he comes back, they'll be ready. Then the Legion'll be really outmatched"

"But if they are planning something big..." You say. "Apparently they've got some kinda giant, indestructible worm monster guarding Kirando now... and our contact has heard nothing out of the Spire for a while now"

"So somethin' is going down" Ilica says.

"Definitely" You say. "But this topic's a bit of a downer, and the mood's bugging Vivi. I'll see what Altea thinks of this when she gets here"

"Good idea" Ilica says. "So anyone seen Hella? I heard she was making cookies, but that was like 4 hours ago"

You shrug. "Maybe she's making a lot. She did say there was a lot of molasses that she wanted to use... I hope she isn't trying to use it all up..." You say.

With that you all finish eating. Emi goes off to see Monique, and Ilica heads up to get Vivi's winter stuff, saying she'll meet you by the entrance in about 10 minutes. That gives you some time to-

You figure you'll see just what Hella's been up to all this time... According to Coral she's still down in the kitchen, so you head down there.

...

It isn't hard to tell what she's been doing once you get close to the kitchen. The smell coming out of there is delicious.

Poking your head inside, you see Hella wearing an apron, her hair tied up in a bun as she rolls out some dough.

Robin is here as well, doing whatever she can to help. Patty is just sitting back and watching.

All over the tables and counters there are cookies, pastries, and cakes. Come have been put into containers or bags, some are sitting out cooling...

You whistle as you walk in, impressed by just how much she's done...

Hella's ears perk up and she turns to you, her determined face dissolving into a smile. "Hey!" She says.

"You've been busy" You say. "What uhh... what made you wanna make all this stuff?"

She picks up the recipe book she's been working out of. "Patty's got this recipe book full of fancy desserts!" She says.

Patty scratches her head. "I had it out yesterday when we were making Brillouche for the kid..." She says.

You can tell what happened just by the look on Patty's face. It's clear that Hella's desire to bake grew beyond her control, so she decided to step back.

"Did you make enough for the whole town?" You ask.

"No. Just for the manor" Hella says, pointing out different batches of things and telling you what's for who and why. Sweet stuff for the kids, low sugar stuff for the older ladies, chocolate for the younger ladies, a whole bunch of stuff she thought you might like, and a few things for you to bring on the road...

"Why would I bring sweets with me to the front?" You ask.

She shakes her head and flips through Patty's recipe book. "No ordinary sweets..." She says, showing you the page. "This is the one I was talking about. It's already in a container now, and it's got enough sugar, coffee, and other things to wake you right the heck up if you're feeling tired"

You look over the recipe, and she's right. Lots of sugar, coffee, and several extracts. "Holy crap, Hella. This'll be enough to keep me and the 5 people closest to me awake for days" You say. "Just why is this in a book for fancy desserts?"

Patty steps over and chooses this moment to take her book back. "For noblemen who hold military positions" She says. "Soldiers sometimes have their own, less refined version of these. But if you need a pick me up..."

"Can I try one now?" You ask.

"Do you want to sleep tonight?" Patty replies. "Because if you eat one now..."

"Ah. Best not then" You say. "How about these?"

You go through some of the stuff, sampling where you can. Nothing has the weird aftertaste that the Brillouche had. Everything is just really damn good. The soft things melt in your mouth, the hard things have a satisfying crunch...

Hella and Robin both seem quite proud of their work.

As you swallow down the last sweet you think your taste buds can handle, you nod. "Should I tell Alice to fit you for a uniform?" You ask, preparing for another round of teasing.

Patty catches on quick, you think... "Oh, is that what she was doing? Applying for the job?" Patty asks. "Well why didn't you say so?"

"Huh?" Hella asks. "Wait, I thought we already-"

"I think she'd look rather nice in the uniform as well, don't you?" Patty asks.

"Oh, she does. She tried on Lola's earlier" You say.

Hella starts to look overwhelmed again, so you laugh it off and reassure her that you're not about to force her into service...

Just in time, too. As Ilica passes by the kitchens with Vivi all bundled up just as you've managed to calm her down...

"You ready to go-ohh... that smells good" Ilica says as she steps in. "Are those strawberry cookies? I love those!'

...

You think your departure might have run into a little delay...

After Ilica is done happily munching on her cookie, you take her over to the church. You only stop in long enough to say hello to Lianna, as you've got to be back home to see your mom.

When you arrive at the manor, Altea's cart is already parked out front. The maid at the door tells you where to find them, so you make sure you're presentable and go see them.

Daria, Val, and Frederick are there with them when you walk in.

"Hey, sorry I'm late" You say. "Dropping a friend off at the church. Took longer than I thought... also I didn't actually know when you'd be arriving"

"That's fine" Altea says. "Frederick tells me your training has been going suberbly"

"One way of putting it" You say as you sit down. "But with any luck, by the time I come back to the front I'll be ready to lay down some hurt... when will that be anyway?"

"One, two weeks at most" She replies. "The march on the spire will begin as soon as the airships are up"

"Is there no way to skip the spire like we did with Contique?" You ask.

Altea shakes her head. "Distance is too great. Our airships need the Spire's generator to recharge, otherwise they'll be dead by the time they reach Kirando" She says.

You nod. "Emi and I think they're stalling for something" You say.

"You're not alone in that belief" Altea says. "Derrick has voiced similar concerns, as have several of my captains"

Frederick strokes his beard. "Building up for something?" He asks.

"Quria says there's a giant worm guarding Kirando" You say. "And nobody's heard anything out of the Spire at all"

"My reports tell something similar" Altea says. "Scouts say the Spire's been quiet, but none of them will go near it"

"I could check it out" You say.

"No. We'll see if we can't get a closer look. You stay here and rest up" She says. "I don't want to try and take the city without the airships anyway"

You nod. "And beyond the Spire and the Worm, they still have their god" You say. "A lot of people seem to find comfort in the trinity, but the Black God tends to give some more potent things to its followers..."

"All of our sources say that any rituals they perform happen in Johnston" Pip says. "Even the rebels don't have eyes one those. Closest thing we've had to an insider was Cheska, who never actually got to see how they commune with it"

"Even Raphaela didn't see where her boon came from" You say. "We should work on capturing one of these people"

"They don't seem like the types to go quietly" Frederick says. "Perhaps that's one of their selection criteria?"

"Well next one I find can be as loud as they want..." You say, idly twirling your finger as a ring of soul appears over it.

"Enough of that dark talk, we-"

Hella picks this moment to come in with a plate of desserts. "H-heyyy I brought stuff" She says. "I-I hope I'm not interrupting"

"No worries, Lala" Pip says. "Ooooooooo those look good"

Altea leans back. "Hella, was it?" She asks.

Hella nods stiffly, doing a bad job of hiding how intimidated she is. "Y-yes"

Altea reaches forward for a handshake. "I don't think I've ever properly introduced myself to you" She says.

"I-It's fine" Hella says, taking Altea's hand.

"Would you like to join us?" You ask Hella. "I promise we're done talking about the dark stuff"

"Uhh... s-sure" Hella says. "As long as I'm not intruding"

"No intrusion. I've actually been meaning to thank you for helping Yuu when he went north" Altea says.

"It was nothing. Really. I cooked like... twice" She says, looking for a spot to sit. You scoot over and make one for her before she starts to get nervous again.

"But you still offered to go" Altea says. "That is worth commending, even if you didn't fight"

"Thank you then... I guess" Hella says, leaning over beside you and hugging your arm. She's trying to look less nervous, but you can tell she's on edge by how her ears are standing straight up.

Maybe asking her to stay wasn't the best idea...

Too late now.

"How are your classes going, Daria?" You ask. "I haven't really had the chance to ask..."

"Ettiquette is stupid" Daria says.

"You need only remember the bare minimum there" Altea says. "Politics and history are where most of your attention should be. A missed fork can be forgiven, a forgotten name tends to stick"

"But there's so many to remember..." Daria says.

Frederick chuckles. "You've plenty of time, Princess. No need to rush this" He says. "Your father is far too stubborn to perish any time soon"

"You can just tell everybody you have amnesia. Worked for me" You say.

You shrug. "And nobody questioned it when I didn't know something"

"That's not gonna work for Daria" Pip says.

"Well then... I mostly remember people by their faces, but if you have to know names in advance..." You say.

"She could try what I used to do when my hall got new hunters" Hella says. "Put the list of names in an order where their first names spell something"

"That could work..." Daria says.

"Like the last batch we got before the civil war was PLUSH: Paul, Lindsay, Uhai, Samantha, Hamish" Hella says.

"What kinda name is Uhai?" You ask. "Sounds southern..."

"Northern, actually. A very traditional northern name" Hella says. "I try to remember a little tidbit about each of them as well"

"Tell that to Leah too" You say, hugging Hella a little closer. "I don't wanna hear about any bakeries out in Leon..."

"Leah's not that bad..." You say, letting Hella go. "I'm just sore because she outplayed me, and I'm trying to make sure it won't happen again"

"You'll need to stay on your toes for that" Altea says. "They say foxes are clever, but the Lion didn't become the king of beasts by letting people outsmart them..."

You sigh. "And do I really have to be an Antolian Lord?" You ask. "I kinda like Lutain the way it is"

"It could be its own independent city state, but that comes with problems of its own" Altea says. "Like sitting at the border between 3 empires and answering to 3 monarchs instead of one"

"I doubt any of those monarchs would cause me too much issue" You say. "Considering that one is my cousin, another is Lyvia, and I'm liberating the country of the third"

"No, but time marches on" Altea says. "Everything might be agreeable now, but perhaps your descendants may not be as friendly with the kings and queens as you are"

"You could always get it in writing" Daria says. "Like the Locken treaties"

You tilt your head.

"Locken is a city like yours" Frederick says. "Independent, technically speaking. They sit on the border between Antolia, Lubars, and the southern gulf. In return for our protection, they keep the river closed to southern raiders"

"Right. And that's why it's called the Locken river" You say. "Because it's actually locked by a huge gate down in Locken. I didn't know Locken was independent though..."

Altea nods. "Lutain could remain independent the same way, as a neutral stop over town with a large air harbour. But Daria is right, you'd want to get it in writing from all parties" She says.

"I'll think about it" You say.

I think that's still sort of the idea. We need to make sure we have a clear chain of command in Lutain first though so no one steals it out from under us. Either stay-at-home wife or make Belladonna our official chancellor or something. Albion's problem is he didn't plan for consequences.
>>
"Are politics always so complicated?" You ask.

"You're sitting in the middle of three nations who've spent a lot of time fighting each other" Altea says. "I don't think it gets more complicated"

You groan. "Legion first. Then we can worry about politics" You say. "Well, then I can worry about politics. I imagine you have to worry about it every day"

Altea smiles. "I'd drink to that, if I didn't have places to be" She says. "The front calls. Perhaps my presence there will get the engineers working faster and we can be moving before the snows return"

"If the engineers do their job right, then we won't have to worry about the snows" Pip says.

"In the air, no. On the ground you guys will all have to slog" She says. "Fortunately it'll clear up as we get further south... we just have to get further south"

"Does it really get the much warmer?" You ask.

"You'll see, Yuyu" Pip says. "Now, I'm gonna let you guys get on with this. I've got a cat, a snake, and a Devil to go say goodbye to"

Pip heads out, with Hella and Frederick choosing to join her so they can leave the family alone.

"Now, while I'm gone I want you both to take your studies seriously" Altea says. "A lot rests in both of your hands..."

"Kaaaay" Daria says.

"I always take my studies seriously" You say. "I worked at the Archives, after all"

"Good" Altea says. "See that's the note I would usually leave on, but Pip isn't here..."

"Cramping your style, Auntea?" Daria asks.

"I shouldn't hold it against her. It's good to see her making friends..." Altea says. "So... read any good books lately?"

"I found out that one of my maids filled a book shelf with cool stuff today" You say. "I had no idea what affinities and attunements were..."

"Not quite the kind of book I was talking about" She says.

"I read one about the second Kazui-Tolanor war today. Does that count?" Daria asks.

"Not talking about history books either..." Altea says. "New assignment for the both of you: read some fiction before you see me again. Research and history texts are well and nice, but try to sprinkle in something fun"

"But research is fun" You say.

Altea sighs. "I'm beginning to regret exposing you to the scholars..." She says. "But if it's what you like... why not tell me what you learned? In simple terms... short ones too"

"Alright..." You say. "So your affinity is your element, and your attunement is how strongly linked to that element you are"

"So strong attunement = good?" Altea asks.

"Not really. A strong attunement makes you great at that one element, but bad at mixing it" You say. "Like how most healers have weak attunements, because they have to mix their magic with nature"

"Ahhhh..." Altea says. "I see"

"I don't get it" Daria says.

"I can explain it better later..." You say.

>1/2

You spend a bit of time explaining Emi's new research project to Altea. She seems a bit more interested in this than she was before. You think the reason for it might be because Jade was so into healing arts.

"So... you take the skin from the healthy person, and bind it to the injured person" Altea says. "What happens to the healthy person then? Aren't you just left with two injured people?"

"The idea is that the healthy person will still have the strength to recover from such a wound" You say. "It's more of an emergency process to use when a person won't survive a standard healing"

"Ahhhh..." Altea says. "And for this you've decided to put a hold on the execution"

"Until we can fill in the holes, yeah" You say. "It's also why we've asked Madelaine to return from the front... you're okay with that, right?"

Altea shrugs. "She's a private contractor, serving under Meyu. If he says she can come, I won't stop her" She says. "And I'm starting to think that Meyu is somewhat incapable of saying no to that girl..."

Pip steps into the doorway. "Yeah, Mads really got her hands on the ol' tiger's heartstrings" She says.

"Ah, you're back" Altea says. "Shall we?"

"Ready when you are, Commander" Pip says.

"Don't win the war 'till I get there" You say, standing up to hug your mom.

Altea hugs you then turns to Daria and Val, who has been stuck in a loop of eating and reforming her own hand this entire time.

"Good luck with the ships, Auntea!" Daria says as she hops in to embrace her aunt.

Altea and Pip say their farewells, then you see them out to their cart. Once they're gone, you head back inside.

"I hope they'll be alright out there..." Daria says.

"Riverhold is secure" You say. "The legion doesn't have the manpower for another major offensive like the one they made here"

"If you say so..." She says.

You reach over and pinch her cheeks. "Now turn that frown upside down" You say. "Go do something. What do you usually do at this time of night?"

"I dunno" She says. "Put Val to bed?"

"It's that late?" You ask, looking at your timekeeper. It's only about 8. "Oh, right. Baby. Early bedtime"

-go see what Cheska's up to"

You figure Ilica has Coral, and she'll let you know when to come bring her back. You've also been finding yourself... what's the word... lingering maybe? Lingering about the priestess a bit too much whenever you see her.

There's been a nagging sort of feeling ever since you first went to her with your extra dimensional problems. Like some of the feelings you resolved have attached themselves to her somehow.

...

This whole 'learning about desires' thing has been fun. You kinda wish it didn't come with so much emotional and societal baggage.

Maybe you'll talk with Lola about it tonight. See what she has to say.

You find Cheska in the big Serpid room with Emi and Ilica. Emi is up near the top again, reading through something. Ilica is on the ground trying to see if Vivi will climb, while Cheska is attempting to do pull ups with her wings.

...

You have to say, she looks kinda bored with her arms crossed and her legs just hanging. It's obviously hard for her as she's grunting and sweating with each pull, but her posture is otherwise very relaxed.

"Workin' hard, Cheska?" You ask.

"Testing nnnnngh something" She replies. "Commander gone?"

You nod. "What's with the pull ups?" You ask.

"Want to see if I can do them" She replies. "It's harder than it looks"

"I'd offer to try it out, but I'm short a couple limbs" You say. "Do they help?"

"They should" She says, pulling up again. "Jude said I had to hrrk... had to find a balance... muscle to weight, you know?"

"Too heavy and you can't fly, too light and you can't flap" You say.

Disregard my mention of Ilica in that last post. I forgot that her and Ilica aren't actually supposed to be here. It's just Cheska and Emi in this room. Apparently I'm more tired than I thought, so I'll probably be calling it a night with this next post.
>>
"Need a spotter?" You ask.

"Sure" She says. "Go ahead"

You step around behind her, putting your hands on her back and giving her a tiny boost as she pulls upward.

The new muscles in her back are all kinda neat. You don't think you've ever gotten a close look at any winged girl's back before, so it's interesting to see how the wing muscles sit on the back and blend into the stuff that's usually there.

You stick with Cheska for a while as she runs through a bunch of exercises that Jude left her with, even when Emi decides to head out and leave the two of you alone.

Once the exercises are done, you both sit down next to each other. "Thanks man... I've never had to work out before, so I'm still kinda figuring it out" She says.

"You seem to be doing well enough" You say. "Didn't take long to build all that muscle up"

"I had Monique's help there. Apparently if you work out, then immediately heal the worked muscle it makes it grow faster or something..." She says. "Good for rehabilitating unused muscles, but once you hit a certain point it becomes kinda dangerous so we stopped once everything was usable"

"I could see that" You say.

"I'm all sweaty. Is it okay if I lean on you?" She asks.

"Has that ever stopped you before?" You ask.

She smiles and rests her head on your shoulder. "Didn't wanna get you all sweaty without your permission" She says. "Gods I haven't sweat this much since I was down in those dungeons..."

"I do recall you complaining quite a bit about that" You say.

She looks over at you, resting her chin on your shoulder. "Is that aaaaaaall you recall?" She asks, tail playing with the strap of her shirt.

"Oh, you mean you failed at your little tease and dropped your shirt?" You ask. "Yeah. I remember"

She giggles. "You should've seen the look on your face" She says.

"I could say the same to you" You say. "Don't even try to say that was planned"

Her tail swishes about as she shrugs. "Skin wasn't as sticky as I thought" She says. "Might be now. But I ain't testing it"

"Why? It's nothing I haven't seen" You say.

"Yeah, I guess my nude form has lost a bit of its mystique..." She says. "But I still ain't testing it"

"That's fair" You say, leaning your head on hers. "Shirt's held up by your wings anyway, so it wouldn't fall no matter what you do"

"Didn't think of that... so I guess I don't need these" She says, flicking the straps off her shoulders.

"Is that... better somehow?" You ask.

"No. But it's making you blush" She says. "Never took you for a shoulder fetishist..."

"I am don't have a shoulder fetish" You say.

"Whatever you say boss" She replies.

"You know I was playin' you back then, right?" She asks.

"Back when we first met?" You ask. "I had my suspicions... have my suspicions. I didn't then"

"Well yeah. I was kinda hoping I could trick you and make my escape" She says.

"What changed?" You ask.

"Well for one thing I never got the opportunity" She says. "That shackle would have damn well killed me... and I guess... I dunno"

"Okay come on. If you're gonna bring it up, you've gotta give me more than that" You say.

"Alright fine. It was nice having someone who had faith in me" She says. "Even when I was looking to try and find a way out of the shackle, I found myself kinda... not wanting to let you down"

"When did it change?" You ask.

"Maybe around when we were in Otuna?" She asks. "The fox told me some things that changed my perspective a little..."

"And then you left" You say.

"Yeah... that too" She says, idly twirling her tail around her finger. "Seeing you up north was just about the best surprise a girl could hope for"

"Not just because it meant you'd win?" You ask.

She shuts her eyes and relaxes into your side. "You're more than just a good fighter" She says. "To me, at least"

"Yeah, I'm a pretty good pillow too" You say, not even reacting when she pinches your side.

"I am pretty amazing, aren't I?" She asks.

"You're certainly one of a kind" You say.

"I'm not sure if that was a compliment or a jab" She says.

"Bit of both" You reply.

"I can work with that" She says. "I mean if we're talkin' one of a kind..."

"There's at least 2 other people like me" You say. "I've met them"

"Neither are actually like you though" She says. "I doubt anyone could adorably bumble their way through life the way you do"

"You make it sound like nothing I do is intentional" You say. "I'll have you know I'm a very calculated individual"

"Oh, please. If you actually thought out half the things you do, you probably wouldn't do half of them" She says.

"That's why I don't think them through" You say with a smile.

She snorts, and turns her head towards you. "Awkward question, but can I kiss you on the cheek?" She asks. "I've never actually known if you liked that or not..."

I'm not exactly sure how much interest we're supposed to be showing considering Yuu's recent sexual experiences and his fear of commitment. I feel like Cheska is one the characters who we can't fool around without consequences.

Same. Although she's always been a bit more openly flirty than the others. She also seemingly gets more enjoyment out of being treated treated like a girl and complimented.

I think that if she makes the conversation a step or two more serious than it is right now then we're going to be playing with fire.
>>

Cheska and Hella seem like dangerous ones right now for going too far. Namaki and Madelaine don't seem to mind. Illica and Emi have been more or less zoned out of a romantic relationship I think, so not so relevant in my mind. Not sure how Stella would swing.
>>
"I do" You say, pointing to your leg where Cheska's wrapped her tail around it. "It's also kinda cute how your tail gets a mind of its own when you get flustered"

"Yeah... when I'm not making it do something it just kinda does its thing" She says. "I'd try to rein it in, but I've got 6 other limbs to contend with here"

"I never said it was a bad thing" You say. "I am starting to lose circulation though, so if you could loosen up a little"

"Ah, sorry" She says, uncoiling her tail enough to let blood flow. "You know you never did kiss it better"

"Well I can't do that while it's wrapped around my leg" You say.

Her eyebrows perk up and she unravels her tail the rest of the way, bringing it up to your face in a 'your move' sort of way.

You hold it gently and kiss it right where it forks, causing Cheska to squeak and flinch.

"Okay that feels funny" She says.

"Funny haha or funny weird" You say.

"Little bit of both" She replies.

"Just as long as you're not about to pass out on me like that one time..." You say.

"Nah. Nowhere near focused enough for that" She says. "Just... funny"

Cheska's tail slides out of your hand and goes back to swishing about.

"What was I talkin' about?" She asks.

"Whether or not I liked being kissed on the cheek" You say.

"Oh yeah" She says, pausing for a moment before turning and kissing you on the cheek. "I remember now"

"Smooth" You say.

"Thank you" She says.

...

"I was gonna say something else too" She says.

"Guess all your attention was on your tail after all..." You say.

... "Nope. It's not comin' to me" She says. "Any ideas?"

"Was it about your studies?" You ask.

"No... I don't think so" She says.

...

"Did you want to be a maid too?" You ask. "You don't really have any housework qualifications, but we can find a use for a girl who can hold 5 things at once"

"No, the uniform clashes with my skin" She says. "Black and red usually match pretty well, but my skin tone is too light for it"

"White always looks good on you" You say.

"Uniform's not all white though" She says. "Sorry man. You'll have to settle for Hella"

"She does look good in the uniform" You say.

"No kidding" Cheska says. "I know a few girls who'd kill to have her bust..."

"Yourself included?" You ask.

"Nah, big tits are just back pain waiting to happen" She says.

...

"I feel like we've gotten off track here" You say. "Think of what you wanted to say?"

"Nah. It'll come to me eventually" She says.

Coral picks this moment to come in with a note telling you that Ilica is ready to go.

"Guess that's it for quiet time" She says. "I should bathe anyway"

"Yes, you should" You say.

"Oh, come on. I don't smell that bad" She says. "I've definitely smelled worse, anyway"

"Not while you've been around me you haven't" You say.

You stand and help Cheska to her feet, where she hugs and rubs herself against you. "Here, lemme just rub some of that off on you..." She says.

"Man, I've got places to be" You say, lightly pushing her off. "I don't wanna go out smelling like a sweaty devil"

"Too late~" She says, twirling as she skips out of the room. "Have fun explaining the smell to Ilica~!"

You sigh as you watch Cheska leave, pulling out your shirt and sniffing it. You can't really smell anything, but Ilica's got a better nose than you...

You arrive at the church and head inside, as Ilica's note said to just come in.

They aren't out front, so you head back to the living room. Ilica and Lianna are sitting on separate couches, and Vivi is sleeping in Lianna's lap.

"Hey. Got your note" You say as you step in.

"That was quick" Ilica says. "Did you drop everything? I did say it wasn't urgent"

You shrug. "I was with Cheska, and she had to go bathe" You say as you sit down.

Ilica sniffs the air. "No kidding..." She says. "What the heck were you guys doin'?"

"I was helping her with her wing work out" You say. "She decided to use me as a towel before she left... just so I'd be faced with explaining the smell to you"

"Yeah, that sounds like her" She says.

"So, I miss anything?" You ask.

"No. Peaceful evening here" She says. "I even helped Lianna make dinner... even though I didn't eat any myself"

You turn to Lianna. "How bad was it?" You ask, chuckling as you dart back and narrowly avoid Ilica's swipe.

"It was... fine" Lianna says, her face strained.

Ilica sighs. "You can be honest, priestess. I know I'm not a cook" She says.

"You could certainly use some pointers..." Lianna says.

"Joke all you want. I know for a fact that I'm a better cook than you" Ilica says.

"It's a big part of her at this point. She's kinda been following you around like a puppy since she got out of the camp..." Ilica says.

"Sounds like you have a fan" Lianna says.

"Oh, you should've seen earlier when she was trying on Lola's uniform" Ilica says. "She just about melted when he told her she was hired. Started calling him sir and everything. It was adorable"

"Is she close with Lola?" Lianna asks.

"They seem close" Ilica says. "She's been needing something like a big sister, and all of her actual big sisters are away. So Lola seems to have been elected for that role"

"You think so?" You ask.

"I know so" Ilica says. "Lot going on right now. Not a great time to be so far away from her family"

You scratch your head. "Maybe I should try and get her to go north, where her Aunt is..." You say.

"I can handle that" You say.

Lianna raises a hand. "Umm... who is this munchkin?" Lianna asks.

"I never told you about the Munchkin?" You ask.

>>
"You should come by the manor sometime. I'd be happy to come and grab you" You say. "And I'm sure the girls would love to have you over"

"I would like that as well" She says. "A shall contact you sometime. Perhaps tomorrow"

"I look forward to it" You say.

You and Ilica both give Lianna a big hug, then head out so she can go to bed.

"At least the snow's done" Ilica says as she straps the sleeping Vivi into the Rook's carrier.

"Don't jinx it" You say.

"Aww, where's your sense of winter wonder?" Ilica asks, reaching down to fling a little snow at you.

You keep your face completely neutral as the snow showers back down. "I've had my fill" You say.

Ilica has a laugh at your expense as you mount up and head off. About halfway through the trip Vivi wakes up and starts trying to lick your face, making it very hard to concentrate on the road.

But you do make it, handing the tired little kitten off to her sister as you dismount.

"Mew" Vivi says.

"Yeah? You ready for bed?" Ilica asks.

Vivi tries to wiggle her limbs about, but the limbs on her little starfish snowsuit are too thick for her to move. She seems frustrated.

"Alright, alright. We'll get you out of the coat" Ilica says. "I'm gonna take the little one up to bed. I'll see you tomorrow. Kay?"

"Okay" You say.

Ilica heads up with Vivi, and you-

You look at your timekeeper and see that it's almost 9, which is when Lola should be coming up to see you. Might as well head back to your room and put a little time into the mold.

Taking the time to go around and say goodnight to everyone on the way up to your room, you arrive to find all your stuff still on your desk.

The mold you got from Sally is dry now. It's made from slightly different stuff than the first one, so it stays a little wet. You needed it that way so you could slot the model into it...

Which is exactly what you do. It fits perfectly, so you grab the stuff to make the actual prosthetic. Eyeballing a measurement, you pour a little bit into the front of each mold, then put the model in and set each one aside to set.

In the morning you should be able to tell if this'll work or not. If it doesn't, you can try something else. If it does you can work on the next step.

You'll need better tools for the next step... files, chisels... you've always kinda liked working with little things like this. You can pretty much eyeball and freehand everything, since your eyes are so good and your hands are so steady.

Looking at your timekeeper, there's still a little bit of time before 9...

Get a bit of reading done, maybe something fiction like your mom suggested.

Tools? Who needs those? We can make our own with soul, pretty easily. And the soul tools will be exactly as sharp or dull as we need them to be. And they'd be especially good if we formed them through our mageblade.

You could easily make a chisel, but a file has a lot of smaller things that would give you trouble.

You remember that Lola stored a bunch of stuff for your lessons, so you check through your drawers and see what's in here.

Top drawer is full of paper and writing utensils. You knew this was here, but it looks like it's been restocked.

Second drawer is where Lola stored all her stuff. There's the lip balm from yesterday, a bunch of oils that all look and smell different, a container of slime tips... you don't know where she got these ones. The ones Altea gave you are still in your pocket.

...

Is stuff like this some kind of career for slime girls? Is there a factory somewhere where they take excess slime and turn it into stuff? Are these things kind of a personal project for slime girls? Do you need to know a slime girl, and ask her for stuff like this?

...

These aren't made from Violet, are they?

...

You decide to put that topic out of your mind, and get into your pajamas.

When Lola walks in, you've just finished buttoning up your shirt. She's in her nightgown again, and she smells kinda nice.

"Good evening, sir" Lola says, as she shuts the door. "How are we feeling tonight?"

"Not so bad" You say. "Thanks again for the books"

She smiles. "Just doing my duty as your favourite maid, sir" She says. "Though if you like, the door is shut. You can thank me properly"

You smirk and move in to give her a kiss, once again putting last night's lessons to work. "You are pretty great" You say. "I dunno if I'd say favourite though..."

"Whaaat? Who's your favourite over me?" She asks.

"Robin" You say.

"Ohhh yeah. Okay. I can accept being number 2 to her" She says. "But you could at least pretend I'm your favourite... you know... while the door is closed"

"Of course" You say. "And what does my favourite maid want to do tonight?"

She looks proud to hear those words, even though she knows you're pretending. "Your favourite maid wants to start this off with a massage, while we talk about these suspicions of yours" She says.

>I told you that was nothing

"Alright" You say. "But I think 'suspicions' might be too strong of a word"

"Ah ah" She says, holding up a finger. "Take your shirt off and sit down. We'll talk in a moment"

...

"But I just put this shirt on..." You say.

Lola grabs one of the oils out of the drawer and hands it to you. "Hold this then" She says.

You take the bottle and Lola starts unbuttoning your shirt, keeping eye contact with you throughout. After the last button, she runs her hands over your bare chest and pushes the open shirt down your arms.

"There. Now sit" She says with a smile as she takes your shirt and throws it over on the bed.

You nod slowly and do as she says, sitting in front of the chair just like last night. From behind you hear Lola sit down and uncork the bottle, then she rubs her hands together to warm them, and places them on your back.

"So" She says in a soft, even tone. "You're getting warning bells?"

"I dunno...it's-"

"Speak in certain terms" She says. "Only say what you're sure of. It'll make everything easier"

You take a breath. "Yes. Part of me thought the switch from 'so scared you forget to breathe' to 'hey sir let me teach you sex' was a bit abrupt" You say.

"That's fine" She says rubbing the warm oil into your back. "It was a bit quick, I'll admit. But telling you about my first owner brought up some strangely nice memories. I thought that I could feel that way again, and give you aid that I saw you were in need of all at once"

"Like I said, it's not really a big deal..." You say.

"Untrue" She replies. "We'll be doing a lot in here that will require trust. I know that I can trust you completely. Can you say the same?"

You take a moment to ponder that before answering, and Lola seems to get a little impatient...

"I'm not asking you to put your life in my hands, sir" She says. "I just need you to trust that I'll never hurt you. Can you say that?"

>Yes

>Maybe not completely...

I'm really not sure if this trust thing she is pushing is her looking out for us or if it makes me a little more perturbed. Something really seemed to agitate her about it.
>>
"Yes" You say.

"I'm glad to hear it" She says.

"Is trust really so important?" You ask.

"For this kind of work, yes" She says. "We both need the security of trust for this to work. If you have worries that I'm plotting something, or that I'll tell someone about this, or anything else, then we need to talk about it. These things may start small, but even a little niggling doubt can grow beyond your control"

"Like it did for you while I was gone?" You ask.

"Yes. Exactly like that" She says, working her hands into your thoroughly oiled back. "That felt terrible for both of us. And when the door is closed, the only thing we should be feeling is good"

"That makes sense" You say.

"So is there anything else troubling you?" She asks.

"Yes, actually" You say. "I've been getting... mixed signals about what I'm supposed to do around girls. Do I play the field and fool around? Do I try to settle even if I'm not ready?"

"You might benefit from a change in perspective" She says. "Have you tried asking who you want to be, instead of what you want to do?"

"I'm... not sure" You say. "What do you mean?"

"Do you want to be the kind of person who fools around, or the kind of person who goes steady" She says. "Picture yourself as each one, and just think of how you see yourself. Do you like these people? If you don't, then is there an alternative? Is there one you like more than the other?"

You snort. "All this talk of other me's makes me think of the ones I borrowed power from" You say. "I guess they kinda fit into those categories too"

"How so?" She asks.

"Well, one liked to throw himself into the big Legionnaire orgies, which kinda counts as fooling around" You say. "The other was enslaved by Raven, so I guess you could call him a one woman kinda man..."

"I was thinking of less extreme circumstances..." She says. "More 'ladies man or committed relationship', less 'orgies and mind slavery'..."

"I know. It just popped into my head" You say. "I'll give it some thought"

"And if you can't decide..." She says, putting one hand on your chin and gently pulling you back so you're looking up at her. "Then just keep your eyes on me. I'd be happy to have you all to myself until you're ready to choose"

"That doesn't sound so bad..." You say. "Wasn't that part of your devious master plan, though?"

"No devious master plan" She says. "Part of this is teaching you how to be pleasured. I promise I won't ruin you for the other ladies"

"Not for lack of trying though... right?" You ask.

She rolls her eyes and pats your chest. "Alright. Time to get started"

I'd sign on to this question as well, just to give the option.
>>
"Hold on just for a second" You say. "What do you think I should do?"

Lola stands and motions for you to do the same. Then she puts her hands on your cheeks. "Whatever you want to do" She says. "I won't try to push you in one direction or the other. It's your life. Your decision. All I will do is try to add perspective to your predicament"

"Yeah... alright" You reply.

She smiles, and then her cheeks redden. "But if you found yourself wanting to settle with a certain maid... I happen to know one who wouldn't protest" She says. "Dark skin, bunny ears, great in bed... and she'd love to have a rich husband, who'd never make her work another day in her life"

"You don't consider this work?" You ask.

"This is play" She says. "I have just as much fun doing this as you do. Believe me"

"We haven't actually done anything like... for you..." You say.

"We're not so different, sir" She says. "What do you find you enjoy most about sex?"

You blink a few times and consider the question...

"I can tell you, if you'd like" She says. "I got a pretty good read on you after last night"

"Oh?" You say. "Go on then"

"You're a pleaser" She says, motioning you towards the bed. "You enjoy servicing your partner, even more than being serviced yourself"

"That's... actually right" You say. "How did you know?"

"When you were telling me your stories, I noticed that you never stopped until they were satisfied" She says. "Good quality to have, and I'm the same way"

You smile at the compliment. "I just... like the way they react. Y'know... when you're doing it right" You say.

"Good. Because that's something we'll be covering tonight" She says, dropping her gown to the floor as she sits down on the bed. "On your knees there facing me, stretch your jaw, loosen your tongue, and we'll begin"

"Yes ma'am" You reply.
>>
That's all for tonight, aside from an incoming smutbin.

I'll be skipping ahead to the war after this, just to keep the pacing from slowing to a stop. But I'll be writing two or three "in between" scenes, that I'll be getting you guys to vote on now.

So tell me what you want to see. Could just be things you want me to write about, or stuff you want to happen before Yuu leaves for war. Possible choices include: Finally fixing Alisette's teeth, a lesson with Lola, training with Frederick, a visit to Lianna, a visit to Gretchen, spending time with one of the girls, receiving a letter from Namaki, or anything else.

Before Yuu leaves, I'd definitely like to fix Alisette's teeth.
Training with freddy and lessons from lola will happen automatically I presume, since we already have arrangements with them.
Other than that...I don't know, I think it could be worthwhile to visit Gretchen to see if we can tune up the rook at all, maybe see if she's got anything in stock that we might want to take with us "just in case". And to tease her more, of course.

Stuff like Alisette's teeth and other things that you were meaning to do will happen regardless. I just want to know if you want a scene for it, or if you want to skip it.

Well, I'd definitely like to see more training with Frederick and a Visit to Gretchen, as welll as Fixing Alisettes teeth.
If I could throw in some more choices, I'd like to see Yuu hang out with the orphans some more, maybe see more of him talking to the people of the city.
