Hey guys, long time no see.
For those unaware, I was sued for defending myself against a jackass who broke into my house for funsies, now he's in jail and I'm back at the questing thing.
This is part of a running line of quests that take place in the Worm setting created by Wildbow, it can best be described as grimdark capeshit.
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Last time on Worm Quest: All Of Me.
You were Barnaby Cambell, asylum escapee, nutter and fugitive. You gained a pocket dimension and weird monster friends after breaking your leg and getting stuck inside the plumbing of an abandoned hospital while hiding from the police. Now, with both your mind and body broken you find yourself back in the city of Brockton Bay.

But that can wait, because before our interruption, we were retelling the tale of your valiant escape from the St James' Mental Health Institute.

http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?tags=Zion

>Free Rebecca, she's six foot three and can keep you safe if you're rumbled while freeing the others.
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

You hurriedly unlock the door, keys clinking and jingling in your shaking hands. It might just be you imagining things, but it seems like you go through the whole damn ring of keys before you manage to find the right one. Eventually though, you do manage to open the door but what you see inside doesn't give you much hope. Rebecca's there sure, but it seems like nobody's in, if you get what i'm saying.

She was pretty jacked before you all got taken here, and that translated into a big appetite. You'd think that the doctors would adjust the doses in the meals to account for that, but it turns out you were wrong. She's not unconscious, but she's super out of it.

>You have to wake her up, you'll need her help to escape.
>Nah fuck this, you should see if the others are better. You know that Andy was pretty lucid.

For a moment you consider trying to snap her out of her haze, but a quick look into her glazed eyes tells you that it's not going to work. There's only the barest hints of recognition there.

You hear a faint exhalation as you close the door, never breaking eye contact. Even if you could have saved her, she would have just slowed you down. It's not your fault... Something about her face as the door shuts disquiets you, though. There's a flash of anger there.

You need to find someone else, someone who can deal with the drugs better.

The other cells you check are no better, the occupants either off their skulls on sedatives or unresponsive. It's nearly been three whole minutes by the time that you find someone actually lucid. Andy's gone, most likely one of the doctor's test subjects for today. Declan's there though.

High school bully, neo-Nazi and your tormentor for almost two years. Now your deliverance. Then again, maybe some things ought not to be forgiven? He's twitchy and erratic, has been ever since getting his powers.
But he's awake...

You have half a mind to leave him in there and let him rot, hesitating just for a second as thoughts of hideous torture run through your mind. No. You can't leave him in there; even if you do find his beliefs distasteful. Disgusting even. You tear the door open as quickly as you can, pulling him from his bed as he looks around blearily.

"Wh-What? Barnaby? What're you doin' in my room?"

"I escaped with the keys, remember? You made me the keys."

"Y-Yeah, yeah, I remember. We gotta get out of here man... gotta tell people."

He's slurring his words badly, and you have to bodily pull him up off his bed. he pushes off of you though and staggers over to the toilet, fumbling with the top of it.

"I... I made something for the escape, had to hide it."

That's when he pulls out the tasers.

"Got the hell kicked out of me, but I managed to copy a few off of a guard. Let him find one so he thought he'd got it back."

You take the black boxy thing, turning it over a few times in your hand. Yeah this'll do.

It's at that exact moment that you hear the one noise you didn't want, the tapping of heavy boots on tiles.

The orderlies are coming, you took too long.

Hide, they might just be passing by.
Make a run for it, you can defend yourself.
>>
>>2967526
>Hide, they might just be passing by.

You quickly close the door to Declan's cell, locking it from the inside while you wait for your "caretakers" to pass on their patrols. You steal a glance out through the window in the cell door and suppress a gasp as you look out into the main corridor.

The orderlies outside have stopped at Rebecca's cell, chuckling about some stupid joke as they get ready to open up the door. That's a problem and a half right there.

You look over to Declan, taking in his worried features and panicked expression as your mind races in desperation.

In the end, it comes down to one last choice.

Grab Declan and run.
Fight, and save your other friend.
Just leg it, they'll both slow you down.

You look over to Declan, the indecision and fear flitting across both of your faces paralyzing the both of you for a long few seconds. watching and listening as Rebecca's slurred words and mumbling voice becomes pleading, begging not to be taken back, not to be tortured.

But you can't move, paralyzed by fear, fear that you'll be captured, fear that it will be you next. Maybe if you just go back to your cell they'll take it easy on you, less beatings and more food would go a long way towards your survival. But that isn't what you want... You don't want to just survive, you want to live. You want to see your mom again, go to the fair with Mike and lose all your money on bullshit carnie games.

You won't just pass on the pain to others, you can be more than that.

Fire is often used to describe anger, but in the short few seconds that it takes to open the door, you become the glacier. Immovable, Unshakable. You will escape, and you will Live.

The first orderly is struck from behind with the taser, twin prongs lodging themselves in his neck and discharging thousands of volts directly into his spine, he doesn't get up afterwards. His companion turns, raises his baton, then falls to the floor, shaking and foaming at the mouth as Declan clones his taser and gives him both barrels.

Declan grabs Rebecca, and you all run. You expected an alarm to go off at any moment, and as time went on without it your mind became even more unnerved. By the time you hit the main lobby, you were half expecting the entire damn protectorate to show up and cart you off to some other, more secure facility.

Little did you know how close you were.

"So what do you think boss? You're the local, you'd probably know what's best."

You shake your head as Clancy's voice brings you back to the present; his thick southern accent raising over the others as they finish off their takeaway. The lot of you were just discussing a plan of action over food. The others are laughing and joking, the Therapist in particular seeming to lead most of the conversation.

"So this student comes up to me and he says, hey Prof I'm failing my psych classes. So I ask him. "How does that make you feel?" Kid nearly punched me right then and there but it was fucking great."

Your newer two are much quieter, the Chemist and Observer mostly keeping to themselves, especially once it becomes apparent that neither of them actually seem to eat. It's a bit strange given that the Doctor is made of Concrete and knives, but you decide that it's better to just be happy that your mental illnesses play well with each other.

You hum to yourself as you idly reshuffle your pocket universe, rooms and corridors twisting and changing as you give the problem some thought. The lot of you have already made up your minds on the broad strokes of your plan. To be a group of heroes, making use of your great abilities to truly make Brockton a better place.

Unfortunately it's a bit more difficult than that. You in particular are a wanted man, it's not like you can go up to the Protectorate and state that you're a hero. In then end, despite your new friends; outside of the Complex you're just some crazy homeless man.

You've been putting in some thought though, and you've come up with a plan of action.

Just start helping people, you've got a hospital and you can use it. Save people, grabbing them off the street if need be and treat them. soon people will come to you.
The injuries and drugs are just a symptom of a deeper illness, you need to treat the sickness at it's source. Find the Villains and stop them first, treating whoever you can across the way. Strike at the gangs and their holdings, roust them out.
Maybe you should try to make contact with the Protectorate, or maybe New Wave?

The problem, you've long since decided; is that an awful lot of people in Brockton Bay do not want the help that they need. Skidmark and his Merchants are almost all addicts, good people but scared, hopeless and desperate. Too lost in their fear and cruelty to seek the help that they need. Lung and the ABB are a response to the hatred of Kaiser's Empire, which only grows stronger as the ABB steals and sells girls into slavery.

Fear becomes Hate, Hate becomes pain. No one salves it either, they just fight and fight; letting the pain fester and grow as it is passed from one man to another. It's the same with Parahumans. They experience pain, it breaks them and then they pass that same pain on to others.

"The Cycle of Abuse."
That's what the Therapist called it.

You will help Brockton. Not the help they want, but the help they Need.

And now it begins.

Brockton is a city on the brink of collapse, it's been there for a while now, but people can feel it in the air. They can see it in the streets. Every day the Protectorate patrols stay just a little bit closer to the safer, more affluent areas of town, every day the ABB and Empire grow bolder fighting the PRT and each other in the streets. The city isn't at war, but it's dying bit by bit.

Today is the first time you can do something. It's time to make some changes.

[okay, so here's how this works. This is more of a civ game than the others due to the nature of your powers. How we'll do things is that you'll assign people and resources to problems or things that you want resolved. Let's start off by assigning some of your Parahumans on a Patrol.]

[Alright nice. Your first patrol. Since you're only patrolling one area, you'll be able to manually resolve it. if you had multiple encounters then you'd choose one to have control of and I would roll for the others. You don't necessarily have to manually resolve the one that Barnaby goes on.]

You head out under the cover of night, trusting the relatively deserted nature of the area to hide the location of your base as you leave to find your first patients. There's a nervous energy filling the van as you get going, driving out of the (suddenly much larger) door back into the "real" world. You decide that you should head into merchant territory for your first foray. The merchant are not only the weakest of Brockton's gangs, they also have the least capes, making it a much safer endeavour than say, Empire territory.

You had been patrolling for a few hours when you are roused from your groggy stupor by an orderly. Apparently the Nurse had spotted something a few streets down and wanted to go check. You nod and wait for her to report back.

It's a good ten minutes or so before she returns, reporting that she'd seen several homeless people hiding out in a dilapidated building.

"I didn't want to get any closer, I might have scared them off. What's the plan Director?"

Go in and talk to them. They'll be skeptical, but maybe you don't even need to bring them back, just make them aware of your hidden clinic (Would make hideout location Obscure rather than Hidden.)

Try to talk them into your unmarked van by offering them free medical care. (Hideout anonymity unchanged)

Alright, time to go talk to some random homeless guys, this can't possibly go wrong.

You prepare yourself mentally before vacating the van of shiftyness. No doubt it'd be best to make a good first impression, free from the connotations of unmarked white vans. Not that you particularly expect any of them to believe you if they've been on the streets for any amount of time. You certainly wouldn't if you were in their position. But if you spread the word enough then eventually people will be desperate enough to come, and then they'll find out that you actually are what you say.

A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step though. And for you that step is essentially advertising. After all, what's the purpose of a special hospital if no one can use it?

You bring Sally and the orderly with you, partially to help make a better impression and partially as protection. You are wearing quite a nice looking suit after all.

Also because your legs don't work and you need someone to push the wheelchair.

Let's see if anything untoward happens during the introduction.

[okay, so everything goes well. Anything above a certain number essentially means a random encounter occurs.]

The meeting is short and while not exactly sweet, nothing entirely untoward happens during your talk with the leader of the homeless group. His name is Eric, and like many other veteran homeless people in the city he's ended up collecting a small herd of newer hobos, who rely on him for information and guidance in these trying times. Apparently they've been cooped up in Merchant territory for a while now, because two of them are black and that'd mean trouble anywhere else.

"Sorry about that man, that must seriously suck."

"Yeah, yeah it really does... Now what's your deal kid? You come here and ask me a bunch of shit with your creepy cape friends, what do you want. I ain't joining any gangs or nothin' an' the kids aren't either."

"Just came to tell you about the clinic on Edwards Street. Me and a couple of healer capes have set up there on the-"

"OH I get it, free food and meds right? All we gotta do is carry some shit, not even illegal? Maybe test some shit your crazy Tinker buddy has just made, yeah no thanks."

"no man, I'm doing it for free. Like actually."

"Bullshit"

"Whatever, just remember it alright? I'm trying to help people here. I totally get your cynicism though."

You keep talking with him for a while, but it's clear that he's having a very difficult time believing you.

[That's a shame, maybe it has something to do with the fact that you're utterly unknown.]

In the end, you just decide to say your goodbyes and head back to the Complex. Time passes, luckily though, you have working clocks.

I think we could solve a number of problems by asking patients to be "informants". It eases the suspicion of free food with no catch, it lets us know what's happening in the city, and they could point us towards other homeless groups to offer the same deal to. If we manage to build a hobo spy network with that last point then that could also be useful for when the PRT or gangs start to ask questions.
>>
>>2969847
>>2969230
Seconding both of these
>>
You guys wanna plan? Discuss? Figure out what to do and where to go from here?
Goals are
>Help the homeless people of Brockton Bay as well as anyone we come across with the FREE HEALTHCARE PARTY VAN
>Experiment with our own powers, see what exactly we're capable of in regards to the pocket dimension stuff
>Get revenge on the sanitarium somehow, either by ourselves or through getting the truth out there to important people
>Repair the generators in our pocket dimension and heal our shattered psyche while also powering ourselves up with it
>Who the fuck is that mystery critical patient? Is it ourselves?
But what else? If nothing else, how are we going to prioritize these?
>>
Can't wait for this story to unfold further!
>>
>>2970734
I believe that our priorities, in order, should be:
1) learning who the mystery critical patient is
2) repairing the generators

3) helping the homeless, follow this suggestion: >>2969847
4)getting revenge on the sanitarium

Given the somewhat anticlimactic end to your first day of superheroism (the occurrence of roughly fuck all.) you decide that it would probably best to get some more sleep and try again the next day, That night is mostly spent watching as the Orderlies continue their renovation of the Hospital building. Most of the rooms have been thoroughly cleaned right now so it seems rather less horrific. You can almost imagine normal doctors walking the halls instead of off brand horror movie monsters. Then again, it's not like you've a problem with your newfound friends. Whether it's faceless security guards or weirdly polite concrete doctors, you certainly prefer them to any of the others you've been socializing with post escape from the Institute. Merchants being less pleasant to hang around with than the very manifestations of your various phobias and illnesses doesn't quite surprise you as a Brocktonite.

But you feel like maybe it should.

Speaking of monsters, you've been noticing the Observer lurking around the place quite a lot recently. It's usually crawling about on either the walls or roof, camera swiveling about. You're not quite sure, but you think it might be going a bit stir crazy. At least you now know it can walk on walls.

Last but not least; your patient in the critical ward has finally stabilized under the Doctor's care. That's good, you'd rather not have your first patient die. It'd be a bad omen.

At the moment your only way of communication with the outside word is periodically sending an Orderly out to get newspapers and watch the news in shop windows, and while it certainly works; it also definitely isn't the most effective way of getting the latest breaking news into your hideout. At about eleven o clock in the morning though while reclining in the Doctor's office; you're interrupted by the heavy footsteps of an Orderly (they have studded shoes) pounding down the tiled floors towards you.

It's not too long before you and all the staff are gathered in the cafeteria, hearing out your info-minion as as he relays the news from the outside.

[Violence Imminent]

"Well shit, that doesn't sound good..."

[Multiple Criminals Spotted]

You smile at that, before reminding yourself that crime happening is generally a bad thing, especially in Brockton Bay considering how it's probably a hate crime of some kind. "What were they wearing?"

[Clothing]

Well that's spectacularly unhelpful. Maybe it'd be best to send someone who can explain things a bit more clearly?

"Right, Nancy and uh... Observer. You two go and take a look at what's going on. If you can handle it by yourselves then do. If you need some help then feel free to come on right back. Don't get overconfident, especially if they have anyone with powers." You're super excited actually, but you had briefed the Staff on all the capes you knew. The orderly would have told you if he'd seen one of the villains in the area.

At least the ones you knew from before the Institute, you haven't really kept up with things recently.

They're about to leave, but the Therapist speaks up as they go, a worried look on his face. "Are you sure you just want to send them? We're not exactly trained fighters, and even if we were, neither of them have powers geared towards fighting. Maybe you should send me or Simon(The Doctor) along as well?"

Send the Therapist as well?

They're still talking.

You can't understand why Louis (If that IS his real name) talks so much, from what little you can remember, shrinks are mostly supposed to listen but no; he's always dickin' on about something or other. You'd understand if he was just verbose about shit that mattered but it shouldn't take a man ten minutes to say goodbye if he ain't saying it to his broad.

(And if he's doin' that then, he should really go for a full half hour. It's like Pa always said, if a job's worth doing, it's worth doing right..)

You don't like how he twitches either, you can't really blame him for it though. Having half a million volts going through your veins has gotta really mess you up. (If that actually IS how his powers work.) Luckily the floating uniform quiets him with a clip round the ear after the 15 minute mark. Then the Boss turns and gives you another of those dumb grins, and despite your cynical nature you can't help but feel a little more optimistic as well.

"You'll be on point, I want you to take a look around before you start taking names and whooping ass. Be careful though man, and remember. Nancy can get you guys out of there if it gets too much or capes turn up."
You nod in assent (damn not having a mouth, it fuckin' sucks) and crawl down off the ceiling as the others finally get ready to leave. Nancy grabs the rest of your small team and after a few quick goodbyes, teleports you over to the door. Door's a bit of an understatement though, now it's grown to accommodate the size of what the less serious among you have taken to calling the Party Bus, Heals on Wheels, or as you prefer to call it...

The Venus Homeless-Trap.

Seriously, who tries to be trustworthy by driving an unmarked van around, promising people free shit? For all the Boss' good points (creation of sentient life, healthy dislike of racial extremism, scary elder god MC Escher powers.) He can be really naive sometimes. Like the whole superhero thing. You get why people'd be into it but it still doesn't really make sense when you think about it. Like uh... Where are you gonna get more supplies once you run out? What if you need to buy stuff? How will you buy stuff if you do everything for free?

He's a good kid, he's just got to think things through a bit.

It's not long before you and the incredible invisible woman are sitting in the back of your shitty van, psyching yourselves up for what might come next.

Christ, supervillains... It's like those old comics you read as a kid, what was it called? Tan-something? Tinman? Nah it had a long title before the guy's name... Tintin! that's it. You remember reading those back when they first came out. Kinda funny though. Now you're older you feel much more like captain whatsisface than the kid.
God... what you'd give to drink. But you can't drink now can you?.. At least you don't get thirsty.
Then the van comes to a halt.

"Hey you guys, we're hoofing it from here."
Guess it's time to go...

Do all Barnaby's fucking personality thought constructs have something in their memory or experiences related to a father-figure? First the Engineer now the Observer. Must be tied to how every timeline/universe's Barnaby has father-related issues and shit.
>Then the Boss turns and gives you another of those dumb grins, and despite your cynical nature you can't help but feel a little more optimistic as well.
Is Barnaby influencing their emotions unconsciously? Must be part of the Master effect.

We imagine one of the empty spare rooms being suddenly filled with all the medical supplies we could ever need, and the power just changes the contents of the room to what we desire?

Barnaby? This is the guy who is not!Joker in another timeline/universe, all of them have to have similar degrees of humor.
>scary elder god MC Escher powers
upside-down staircases and mindfuck geometry should be something to look into when experimenting with the pocket dimension domain power
>What if you need to buy stuff? How will you buy stuff if you do everything for free?
That's what bank robbery is for. Just open the doorway right into the middle of the bank vault, take everything, go back through the door, erase it behind, boom. Quick and simple bank heist without having to fight the Wards. Not quite Doormaker but close enough.
>Tintin! that's it. You remember reading those back when they first came out. Kinda funny though. Now you're older you feel much more like captain whatsisface than the kid.
Tintin comics were really damn good, I approve of this patrician taste
>>
The three of you pile out into the city streets, at once feeling both terribly lost and strangely nostalgic. You slink up to the roof of the van as Louis and You take your first proper looks at the city. The first thing that strikes you is the size of the goddamn buildings, Jesus. It's like they ran out of space and just decided "Fuck it, we'll build UP instead." You've seen skyscrapers sure, but not ten in a god damn row.

Then there's the people.

Moral standards have clearly gone to shit, and by god you love it.
You.
Have.
Never.
Seen.
So.
Much.
Skin.
In your life.

Just everywhere you look there's amazing legs and tight stomachs and fantastic cleavage. It's amazing. I mean sure it's a summer day, real hot out but FUCK. You could get used to this.

The effect is somewhat ruined by the blaring alarms and the fact that they're all running and screaming from what appears to be an active gang fight between a bunch of gooks and those Empire guys. Huh, you thought you beat the Nazis?
It's probably an alternate dimension thing. This has gotta be dimension fuckery, like uh.. multiverse theory or whatever. You're pretty sure you saw that in a tv show once. Or maybe a comic.

Either way there's a bunch of guys with lead pipes, baseball bats, knives and the occasional pistol. A quick head count puts it at twelve guys on the Empire side and six asians. Thing is though, the asians are clearly some real tough mother fuckers, while only two Empire guys actually look like gang toughs.

The two sides are trapped in a deadlock, the fighters with melee weapons are all in cover behind cars and low walls while the ones with guns are stuck in a kind of holding pattern, firing and reloading, but never really seeming to hit each other. Using your detective's intuition, you's say that the ABB came looking for a quick raid and got dragged into a longer fight than they'd expected.

Backing >>2978118. Louis can aim his lightning at cars to conduct the electricity to the thugs hiding for cover behind them, maybe enough to knock em out to make them unable to pick up their weapons?
Nancy and Jack can help wounded civilians. Jack can spot them with his high quality super vision because thermal/night/IR are useless here in the middle of the day. Nancy can teleport the injured to spots out of the way of stampeding crowds or stray bullets. Meanwhile Louis can zap the thugs a second time if it looks like any are going for the guns again.

Speaking of Jack, what exactly is "power vision" supposed to be? Thermal infrared and night are self-explanatory.

You try and open your mouth to speak, too late remembering that the only sounds that emerge from your mouth any more are deep electric tones and beeps. Luckily your companions also shake themselves out of their respective funks and get into position, pushing through the crowds towards the intersection that our punching bags for tonight are battling across. You take a few steps to the side and begin climbing the walls of the nearest building, putting yourself in a good position to see of any of the guys with guns change to firing at your team mates.

You don't exactly know what you'll do when it happens but hey, you always were more of an improviser than a planner.

Louis (the lucky bastard) has a rather more straightforward power, and he already seems to have a good handle on it, firing blasts of crackling blue lightning across the streets and into the cars that the gangsters are hiding behind, most of them manage to dive out of the way but an ABB soldier and a few Empire thugs are too slow. Another poor bastard is holding on tightly to his metal pipe when it attracts an entire blast, chaining off him and striking one of his compatriots who's brandishing a knife.

A few blasts come worryingly close to civilians, but Nancy always seems to know exactly who she needs to blink away with just in time. that's not to say that she doesn't get a few licks in herself. One skinhead who thought he'd go for the invisible nurse gets a nasty punch in the back of the head for his troubles, courtesy of your teleporter.

One of the Empire gunmen drops his pistol after taking a lightning bolt to the chest, You've half a mind to go and grab it.

The various thugs are beginning to re-prioritise now, no longer content to fight each other when there's a bunch of monstrous heroes in their midst. Now they're turning to you.

The remaining skinhead leader falls back into an alley behind his men, reaching into his pocket as he does.

The three of you make eye contact as the thugs fall back (made more impressive by how only one of you actually has eyes.) You didn't really come into this with a plan, but what you're doing right now seems to be working rather well, so why not just keep going with it? Louis just shrugs and keeps firing lightning all over the place, zapping any thugs that come out into the open. He catches a heavyset ABB member with a fork of lightning, sending him flying back into another poor bastard and electrifying them both as they land.

Observation Bonus: You aren't sure how, but you know that he's pretty close to running out of juice. His bolts are thinner and have gone from a deep blue to white. He'll need to give it a rest soon.

Nancy is keeping focused on her task as well. Most of the crowd has cleared now so she's moved on to pulling the injured out of harm's way. You spot her moving a crying child that one of the Empire had been reaching for. Presumably he'd wanted to take a hostage, but it's hard to do so when you've got a teleporter containing the conflict. You lose track of her for a moment before feeling a tap on the shoulder, looking up to see her holding out a pistol.

Which you take obviously. Tintin may have been a pacifist, but he wasn't a bitch and if comics have taught you anything it's that people rethink pulling shit when there's a gun in their face.

Unfortunately you've lost the advantage of surprise, so the gangers are doing much better at avoiding Louis' lightning. Far more worrying is how you're starting to see ABB and Empire soldiers talking quietly together. The ABB leader with the submachine gun in particular has managed to pull together most of the others, and is clearly hyping them up for a charge at Louis.

The Empire leader has come back out from around the corner as well now, and he's started laying down some serious fire towards Nancy, who's forced to stop grabbing people and focus on evading bullets.

Observation Bonus: Your sensors are picking up something loud coming your way. It sounds like a big engine, or maybe a few engines all together. A bit of crashing and banging is going on too. They'll be coming from the south.

And that's when things go tits up.

It starts with Louis, you can see his lightning getting shorter and thinner, with less forks and force behind it. Every blast goes a little bit less damage where it hits and every second the gangsters get more brazen until it all culminates in a one final fizzing spark... then silence as he tries to parse what's happening. There's a great shout from the cowering mobsters as they leap over their improvised barricades and charge, hurtling towards your now considerably less powerful friend.

Well, friend might be too strong a word. The boss'd be mad if he died though, that'd suck.

You drop from your hiding spot on the wall and skitter across the floor, long limbs carrying you to Louis' side as he rushes forwards himself, the two of you meeting their charge and entering into a hefty brawl. The first one you meet looks a bit put off as you drop down, shuddering and slowing his pace as you meet each other. You rise up to your feet and take a stance, but Louis drops him with a shoulder charge before "acquiring" his baseball bat. Unluckily the rest of the group hits just after, and they hit hard.

One of them swings a crowbar into your knee as you move to keep yourself from getting surrounded and it connects heavily forcing you down onto all fours. Unlike some people though that's not a disadvantage for you; and you skitter away before pushing back up onto your feet. Putting up your dukes as well.

You're no boxer, but you've been in enough street fights to know that unless something really good happens, thsi will go badly. This is real life, and in real life numbers really matter. You're outnumbered three to one, and you know it. You sure hope that whoever's coming your way is on your side.

You can't see Nancy any more, too busy fending off the thugs trying to box you and Louis into a corner, but you haven't heard any screams yet. You hope she's okay.

Louis is handling himself well because of his size and strength, (Not to mention the two of you are scary as all hell.) but he's clearly got no experience in actual fighting, mostly just swinging the bat at anyone who gets close. You're gonna have to give him some pointers later.

They're good fighters, you'll give them that. But the two of you are strong enough that they're mostly staying away. At the moment, it's more them trying to maneuver around you, get you encircled. You're holding up well, but it's only a matter of time if you don't think of something.

[Your thoughts stray to the pistol in your coat. You'd have no problem with it, but the boss said you weren't supposed to kill folks.]

You can hear rapidly approaching gunshots now, alongside what's definitely multiple vehicles.

The grunts surrounding you rush in again, hoping to take you off balance as their leaders back off and start talking, the ABB and Empire leaders taking cover behind a previously electrified car while they talk strategy. There's still more cursing and slurs than would normally be expected in such a tenuous alliance, but neither of them kill each other so you'd assume it was normal for them. There's no time to listen in though as you and Louis rush the mooks. It's a tense few seconds as they back up and move to surround you, but you just keep going and don't let them make any space. After a slight bit of running, you trample the two in front of you. Louis brings his bat around heavily in a colossal one handed swing, sending the skinhead flying across the road while you bring up your pistol. You've got to admit, watching a Nazi shit himself is hilarious, especially when you can play it back in slow motion. You grab him with your other hand and lift him off the ground while turning, pistol raised at the group trying to follow behind you. Now you've got the bastards scared.

Just in time for the three black vans to turn up.

The first one is significantly larger than the other two, and not only continues through the traffic, sending cars everywhere but also has two figures on top, one a woman armed with a machete, and the other is a man who's just entirely white from head to toe including his suit. You see the woman plant her machete deep in the man's shoulder before the van careers to the side and rolls over onto it's side, throwing both of them off.

The other two stop just at the side of the road and men in black armor pop out, the PRT logo emblazoned across their backs as they move forwards towards the larger vehicle, carefully advancing towards it's back door, which explodes outwards as more Empire men rush outwards screaming in rage and frothing at the mouth, while they're lead out by a man wearing a long fur coat.

Lastly, a young boy in a red bodysuit comes flying along behind the vans, maybe ten seconds behind. He flies down into the rapidly spiraling out of control melee, kicking and punching as he goes.

The ABB soldier has wisely decided to make himself scarce.

Radical Battlefield change detected.

So now that Barnaby isn't Manic, the rest of the main timeline will happen close to how Worm happened, right? Taylor and the Undersiders, the Lung fight, et cetera?

Also, I really like the characterization of the tulpa staff things, good work.
>>
>>2979642
>What do you like?
That you're back mainly. I swear the last 5 or so quests I was really enjoying had the qm ghost, move to akun, or both. O also really enjoy the staff and how their internal monologues are.

How far are we until we switch Barnaby's again?
>>
>>2979664
Eh, I've already made a couple of changes to the universe. I also came up with a few more supervillains to play around with.

It'll also depend on your actions a fair bit.

For example, if you've got people patrolling the docks when the big lung fight happens, you'll be able to help out.

You're a pretty big player in-universe people just don't know it yet. Hell, you've almost got as many adult capes as the Protectorate.

A thread or so, depending on how things go, maybe two.

I disliked that Brockton Bay was described as teeming with caps, but what we actually saw felt rather empty. If you could come up with more capes to fill out the existing organizations and maybe some new ones, it would go a long way to helping BB feel more lively in my opinion

Also, I think it would also allow us to interact more with these groups without overly affecting the storyline, if thats the route you want to go

No clue if this is that weird hired torture specialist side character, except a woman and with machetes instead of cleavers. Could be anyone else for all I know since there weren't any costume or clothing descriptions for her like there was for Alabaster MM and Aegis.

You tear your vision away from the vicious brawl across the intersection and focus on your own problem, namely the thugs still chasing you and Louis into the centre of the junction. They're not nearly as enthused as you might expect though, considering that reinforcements have arrived. That might have something to do with how you're using one you picked up earlier as a human shield and have a gun pointed at his head.

That just might be it.

You keep an eye on the neo-nazis as Louis opens up a car engine, slowly reaching for the battery. You watch as the angry expressions on their faces slowly morph into confusion, fear and befuddlement slowly warring on their faces as they watch Louis stick his hand on the battery..

"The fuck is he doing?"

"is he a nut?"

"He's a cape, they're all nutters."

"Oh SHIT HE'S-"

Then the power comes back on. And the lightning starts back up.

Louis sees off the last of your specific thugs while you turn to the others, surveying the carnage happening on the other side of the intersection. It's a fucking bloodbath. The PRT troopers and Aegis are barely holding them off despite their superior weaponry and training. They weren't prepared for this level of sheer aggression from some low level criminals and now they're paying for it, barely able to hold their line against the reckless surge of maddened, screaming berzerkers. You see the new cape there as well, rushing towards the crowds that formed a relatively safe distance from the fight.

Maybe not so safe now?

You fall back as Louis advances towards the melee, wading in with lightning in one hand and baseball bat in the other. None of the berzerkers seem to take notice at first but the PRT troops do, pulling away from their opponents as the lightning bearer crashes into them like a hurricane of wood and lightning. More than a few of the troopers start cheering as they reload their sprayers, clearly getting ready to hose down the vicious mob. What you see reinforces your belief that Louis hasn't been trained in combat. (Or at least he's hiding it very well.) It's clear that this is his first real fight, he's got no stance or footwork to speak of, no real plan besides to wade in swinging and if he wasn't using powers and a weapon you'd expect him to have broken his hand by now what with how clueless his punches were earlier. What he lacks in strategy though, he makes up for in strength and enthusiasm.

Not to mention lightning... Seriously though, the ability to shoot lightning everywhere makes this much easier than it could be.

Seeing that he's got it covered, you turn and climb up a nearby building, scuttling up the wall until you're about ten metres up before stopping and looking around, gun in hand. Now that you're separate from the field and have a good vantage point you can see things a lot clearer. You can see the unknown parahuman grab one of the civilians, who swiftly begins frothing at the mouth before screaming in rage.

Ah, so he's a Master.

Luckily for the crowd, it's at that moment that Nancy reappears, spiriting the Empire Cape away from the crowd before quickly reappearing on a nearby rooftop. The man himself is stood back in the centre of the intersection, looking around and clearly trying to figure out what just happened as his fur coat flaps in the breeze.

A few police jump on the affected civilian as well. Good to see that they're paying attention.

You're missing one bang there. But now that you mention it, we could maybe take the time to loot some of the weapons from here before they head back to the base. I doubt this'll be the only fight our buddies are gonna be in for our sake, so having weapons back at the pocket dimension would be useful for the future.

You take another quick look around before making a decision on what to do, double checking how the different fights are going on throughout the engagement. The unknown Empire cape is trying to escape from Nancy in the centre of the road, but any attempt he makes to escape is thwarted by simply being teleported back where he was. Nancy seems to be making excellent use of the disorientation that affects people she moves, grabbing him from behind and leaving before he can recover his wits and turn.

Louis, Aegis and the PRT are doing fairly well too, holding their own rather handily against the berserk thugs who even now are taking losses, only five of them left. You decide that despite how well the fight's going. they could always do with more help. This strange nazi might have a fairly good power, but he's fairly well contained at the moment.

You lower yourself off the wall as the battle continues, scuttling down and across the ground towards the melee near the crashed truck. You introduce yourself to the brawl by crawling up behind one of the few remaining berserkers and pulling him to the ground, recoiling as one of the troopers quickly turns and aims what looks like a flamethrower at the thug, covering him in foam that quickly solidifies.

You turn back to the brawl, only to see the last remaining thug being wrestled down by Aegis and Louis, their size and strength letting them overpower the madman.

It's at that point that the woman from before comes back around the wrecked van, now armed with a pistol instead of the machete she was wielding before. She's also holding her side and breathing heavily under the american flag that serves as her mask. This would be the Miss Militia that the boss told you about earlier then? She doesn't look like much.

You take another quick look around after the fight's cooled down, watching as the Master from before sits down in the road, looking resigned and rather grumpy at his failure to escape. You watch as one of the PRT troopers walks over and slowly foams him up, almost microscopic shaking occurring under his armour. If you had to take a guess, the trooper's helmet is suppressing a serious case of the giggles.

"Hey?"

You enjoy the look on Miss militia's face as you swivel your head a hundred and eighty degrees to face her. She recovers quick though, and it's not long before she resumes talking. There's a few pauses, as she still seems a bit out of breath.

"Thanks for the help, Loki can be a bit of handful sometimes if you let him get into a crowd. Alabaster got away, but I think this was still generally a win for us." She gives you a long look, before continuing. "You're all new right? Breakers or something?"

You just give her a long electric tone, shrugging your shoulders. Best not to give too much away. Not like you can anyways. It's at that moment that Louis decides to make himself known, coming over from where he was conversing with Aegis and the PRT troopers. Cont/
>>
>>2998915

Louis does his usual thing and inserts himself into the conversation with all the subtlety of a brick through a window, placing himself between you and the inquisitive Hero.

"Sorry about the confusion, my coworker here can't speak. We think it has something to do with his powers. I'm the Therapist and he's the Observer, it's a pleasure to meet you Miss."

They shake hands as Nancy floats over, Miss militia laughing as Louis making a joke that you're only half paying attention to. You're far more interested in the man roughly two hundred meters away clinging to the side of a building. You only get a quick look at him, noting little except a demon mask, either Chinese or Japanese. He turns to ash before you can really get a good look though, what little is left of him floating away on the wind.

You knew THEY would send someone eventually, now it's just a matter of whether he's a spy or an assassin. Maybe both.

You turn back to the discussion a few seconds after he's gone, noting that the PRT troopers are loading back up into their vans, not driving off though. Aegis has come over as well, and is just hovering there next to your companions, occasionally stealing bewildered glances at Nancy. To be fair, she is just a floating uniform.

(Or maybe he has ulterior motives, THEY wouldn't be above sending children as spies.)

"My earlier question still stands, who exactly are you? Some sort of new parahuman group? It'd be nice to see another proper hero group get set up in the city. If you're Case 53's the protectorate could help you too, we've got whole systems set up for rehabilitating people who've lost their memories."

You know you're heroes of course, but how much do you tell her?

Sure, the whole Master minion thing may be at least partly true, but I think they're all independent minded enough that they'd probably be somewhat uncomfortable with referring to themselves as such.
