When you get back up to the road you hand off the bag with the child in it to Callon, with instructions to care for it, give it food and water, keep it calm, and possibly find someone who speaks Old Antolian.

Once Callon is gone, you get Gerard to patch up your hand and make your way to the inner gate.

"Anything new?" You ask Rhea, who's still looking out over the bridge.

"They're being weird" Rhea says, nodding towards the other castle.

You can see the Legionnaires setting up barricades and defensive positions using furniture and more advance shielding devices on 'their side' of the bridge.

"They want a fight" Meyu says.

"They're giving up the castle unless they plan on locking those defenders out" Rhea says.

"We've got the firepower. The inner gate won't hold, and these castles weren't meant to defend against attacks across the bridge" Meyu says.

"They're sitting ducks out there" Madelaine says. "What's stopping us from raining fire froms our ships?"

"We need this bridge" Meyu says.

"No we don't" Rhea says. "Losing the bridge will only slow us, not stop us. We're taking the castles because we can't leave them behind"

"Rhea's right. Something is wrong" You say. "I don't know what it is, but-... do you hear that?"

"I do" Rhea says. "Sounds like an airship"

"Boost me" You say.

Rhea nods, links her hands and squats. You give her your foot and she tosses you up above to where you can easily see through the upper windows. From up here you can see a little bit over the opposite castle to the south.

"What do you see?" She asks.

"Definitely airships" You say. "A lot of airships"

You see one ship ahead of the others. Not leading the fleet though... it looks like it's running from them. This suspicion is confirmed when you see that it's damaged, on fire, and obviously not going to be in the air much longer.

After relaying all this info to the others, you jump back down to confer.

"They can't belong to the legion. Too many for them after we stole or shot down so many" Meyu says.

"Who are they then?" Rhea asks.

"Not friendly" Meyu says. "Only explanation for the Legion's sudden boldness is that they heard they were getting their own air support. And if they're not friendly, then I think we want that lead airship to make it to our side of the river..."

>Not much we can do about that from here...

Rolled 26 (1d100)

"I'm gonna head up one of the towers and see what I can do" You say.

You go up to the walkways and run to the northern side of the castle where the towers are, then make your way up the stairs.

From up here you have a clear view of the approaching airships. The lead is slowing down, allowing the ones behind it to catch up and put it in range of their weapons.

They're still pretty far away, but you might be able to do something from here. If you can project your spells that far, then maybe you can make the pursuing ships back off.

You gather the energy around you, and hold your hand out...

You launch what is quite possibly the largest soul bolt you've ever fired out at the incoming ships. It goes wide, completely missing the one you were targeting and not even managing to graze the ones behind it.

"Damn" You say. "Accuracy was never quite my thing..."

You raise your hand for another shot, stopping as you see the right way to go about this. You then point your hand a bit further down, at the crest of a hill a ways south of the castle, and fire.

"Well shit, I didn't even consider that" You say.

The bolt hits the hill and just as the lead ship gets past it, the hill erupts into a pillar of soul. All of the closest pursuing ships are forced to make evasive maneuvers, with the foremost of them not doing it quickly enough.

With the pressure off, the lead ship manages to stabilize enough that it looks like they'll make it north of the river... but not much further than that.

As you stand ready to fire again if things look bad, Coral pops out of your shirt looking equal parts confused and excited.

"What's up?" You ask.

Coral points at the ship.

"Yeah, I see it-... wait, is someone you know on there?" You ask.

Coral nods.

"Kinda makes me wish you could tell me who it is..." You say. "Hunters, maybe? Coming from the south... those ships couldn't be the southerners, could they?"

Coral shrugs, and you chuckle.

"Guess I'm asking the wrong person, huh?" You say.

Glad to be back anon

You scribble a quick note for Coral to take down to Meyu and Rhea, then hop off the tower and springboard down towards where you think the ship is going to crash land.

It's a little lower than you were expecting, though. Instead of making it to the field it hits the north bank of the river and comes to a much more abrupt stop than you were expecting.

As you run towards the ship, the Lubrian airships above you move into a defensive position. The enemy ships back off, obviously a bit trigger-shy after your little display of force. Makes you glad they couldn't possibly know that you can't really do that again.

The long range nature of those attacks put most of your gathered soul beyond your reach. You have enough in your reserves to fight normally, but anything big will have to wait until the energy you sent out disperses and comes back.

When you reach the ship there are already people coming off. You don't recognize them, but you do recognize the Hunter's mark on their clothes.

One of them, a young man, calls out for you to stop as you approach. "Hold up now" He says. "You Lubrian?"

"Prince Yuu Gallant" You say. "Hunter?"

The man looks relieved. "Captain James Ream... My name's... a bit less recognizable than yours" He says.

"That's fine, so long as you can fill me in on what's happening here" You say.

"Miss Katherine ordered us to cast off and reach the Lubrian forces as quickly as we could. The other ships have been chasing us since we left Ebiha" James says. "Didn't think we were gonna make it for a bit there..."

"It was certainly a close shave" You say. "But that doesn't explain why you had to flee Ebiha"

"I need to see to my ship, and the ladies can explain that much better than I could" He says.

"What ladies?" You ask.

Someone jumps off the ship and lands gracefully beside you. When they stand up, you see...

"Ilica?" You ask.

"Hey" She says with a slight smile.

You blink in surprise a few times. "Hey" You say.

The captain nods to you and then climbs back up aboard his ship. The second he's gone, Ilica steps in for a hug. She squeezes you as hard as she can, and you feel her shaking a bit.

"You okay?" You ask.

"As okay as I can be after 3 days of terrifying airship travel" She says.

"Well you're alright now" You say, scratching her under the ear. "Any idea why those guys were chasing you?"

She nods. "The new king of the isles has thrown in with the Legion, and he's going to attack Leon" She says, taking a breath and steadying herself. "Mom sent me up here to warn you guys once she saw them take down her sprite"

"They're attacking Leon?" You ask. "When?"

"Their ships are on the way now" She says.

"The commander needs to hear about this, I-" You're about to let go of Ilica, but stop when she tenses right up.

You smile, and give Ilica a squeeze. "You need a minute?" You ask.

"Or two" She replies.

"A little pressed for time right now... I could carry you up to the commander if you'd like" You say.

"Shit, no! I can't leave here just yet. Not without-"

You hear a bit of a scuffle up on the deck, followed by a little shriek and a thud nearby. You turn just in time to see the rest of a long Serpid tail falling to the ground.

"Emi?" Ilica asks, stepping away from you and walking over to the fallen person. "What happened?"

"Emi? She's here too?" You ask.

"I'm here" Emi says, lifting herself up into view. "Ow, ow!"

You rush over to her. "Are you hurt?" You ask.

"No it's- stop that you little- ugh" She replies, clearly frustrated. "I keep telling you not to leave her with me!"

"Leave who?" You ask.

Your question is answered by something small attacking your leg as you approach Emi. It locks on, digs in its claws and starts gnawing...

...

"Why is Vivi here?" You ask.

"Because she's an adorable little shit who likes to go places where she shouldn't" Ilica says, as she plucks the kitten off your leg.

Vivi hisses at her sister.

"Don't give me that. You knew full well that you weren't supposed to sneak into my bag" Ilica says. "But enough about that. We need to see Commander Altea"

Emi nods as she straightens herself up. "Right" Emi says. "We can catch up later... if there's time"

>1/2
>>
You take Emi and Ilica to the tent that Altea is coordinating the attack from, passing others making their way to the crashed airship to provide support along the way.

Emi relays the story as quickly and concisely as she can, to the point where it's pretty obvious that she's been practicing this.

Her story starts when she arrived back home and started trying to drum up support to aid Lubars against the Legion. Her efforts were stymied by the fact that a man named Kameh had been taking over the isles by defeating the lords in single combat while she was away.

Unfortunately Kameh had different plans, and imprisoned her when he heard what she had been doing. But Ilica and Katherine broke her out when they sent off the airship.

Emi is looking pretty down by the time she finishes, but Altea is practically seething.

"Attacking us while our backs are turned..." Altea says.

"What do we do?" You ask.

"We'll never make it to Leon in time. We can send them a warning, but without the automatons..." Altea says. "Damn it..."

"You left out a pretty important bit there Ems" Ilica says.

Emi winces and looks to you with a worried expression.

"What is it?" You ask.

"Well... there is a way..." She says. "Yuu has a right by which he could challenge Kameh to single combat"

"Go on" Altea says.

Emi hesitates, so Ilica takes over.

"That Kou dude you sent tried to take this guy down and failed, but Kameh couldn't take his sword because it belonged to you" Ilica says. "That apparently means something to these people. Like he won, but it wasn't a real victory because he didn't get the sword"

"So if I went to Leon, I could just fight this guy and put an end to this?" You ask.

"Yes..." Emi says.

"Why would you leave that out?" You ask.

"Because he's... I..." Emi says.

"She doesn't think you can take him and she's worried you'll die trying" Ilica says.

Emi looks down and nods.

"Are spells allowed in these little combat challenge things?" You ask.

She nods again.

"Then I can take him" You say. "I mean, you saw what I did to those airships"

"What? That was you?" Ilica asks.

"Who else would it have been?" You ask.

"Gods I thought that was some kinda new weapon thing" Ilica says. "You've been busy this last month, I guess"

"More than you know" You say.

"Is there anything else to this story?" Altea asks.

"No..." Emi says.

Altea nods. "Would you mind giving us some privacy?" She asks.

"Of course" Ilica says, patting Emi on the shoulder. "Come on"

"I'll see you guys in a bit" You say as they head out.

"You bet" Ilica replies, leaving you with Altea.

You sit in silence with her for a moment, before she speaks. "Not the reunion you were hoping for" She says.

"Not really, no" You say. "I was expecting more hugging and less imminent threats"

"You're confident you can bring this... Kameh down?" She asks.

"I'll need to pick my arena carefully, but I think he'll find it pretty difficult to fight back as a pile of ashes" You say. "Want me to leave now?"

She shakes her head. "If you leave now they'll see you, and either pursue or send warning" She says. "Your eyes work in the dark. Theirs don't. We'll take advantage of that"

"I should have seen this coming. Leon is a massive target without the automatons" She says.

"We had the Legion mostly contained. Even I never expected someone to join their camp now" You say.

Altea stands. "Make sure they regret it" She says.

"Of course" You say. "But what about the siege?"

"It'll have to go on hold for now..." She says.

"Just because I'm leaving?" You ask.

She rolls her eyes at you. "Because of the airships" She says. "We no longer have control of the skies. Until we get it back, committing soldiers to the bridge is far too risky"

"Kind of a long delay..." You say.

"So make it as quick as you can" She says. "Now, if you don't need anything else..."

"Lots of work?" You ask.

"Everyone needs new orders" Altea says. "Take a few hours off. Catch up with your friends, eat well, and get some rest. I want you ready to go by sunset"

"Mew" Vivi says.

"That's one. Do I have a 2 and a 3?" You ask.

Ilica and Emi exchange a look. "Yes" Ilica says as they bot stand up. "Food sounds good"

"Glad to be back on solid ground" Ilica says. "Mom loves airships, and apparently Vivi takes after her in that regard. I am not a fan"

"Strictly speaking that's not true. The blame for this rests solely on this Kameh dude, no matter what you or the Commander have to say about it" You say. "Seriously, everybody is trying to take the fall for this one"

That gets a smile from Emi, and Ilica changes the subject before she can put herself back down.

"So what have you been up to?" Ilica asks.

"Lots" You say. "Want me to start from the beginning, or is there something you want to hear about in particular?"

"I hear you met back up with Cheska" Ilica says.

"Yep" You say. "Odd bit of luck, ending up on the same team as her. But it worked out well for both of us. She's a human now, by the way"

"She what?" Emi asks. "You mean... not a demon anymore?"

You nod. "She almost died trying to save me when Mahron came out of nowhere in the attack on Lutain, but I kinda broke time to save her back and somewhere in that chain of events she got her heart back"

"I only broke time a little" You say. "I needed some skills from other versions of me, which ended up being a lot more trouble than I bargained for but I'll get into that later"

"That was question one..." Ilica says.

"Save the rest for later, there's a lot to get through" You say. "I actually own Lutain now, by the way"

"Seriously?" Ilica asks.

"Yeah. After we took the place I threw Baron Graumer into a cell after breaking his nose a few times, then the council decided that I was the only person who they could agree on so they named me lord" You say "The maids were elated to hear that you had survived, by the way"

"They remember me?" She asks.

"Of course" You say. "You should go there, actually. It's nice and safe, and there's a ton of child care stuff for Vivi"

"Yeah, we're kinda runnin' out of diapers..." She says. "Wait... why do you have a ton of child care stuff?"

"I'm turning the place into an orphanage" You say. "I've just got the one right now, well... one and a half. But I'm sure there'll be more"

"How can you have half an orphan?" Emi asks.

"She's a whole person, but she actually worked there when I arrived and kind of works there still" You say. "But her job is mostly just keeping up morale by being adorable, so I sort of count her among the orphans..."

"Oh, and another cool thing" You say. "Lyvia was around during the time of Caian and the other heroes. It was actually Kukuri who sealed her away in ice so she wouldn't be the one to sacrifice herself"

"Really?" Emi asks.

"And that's not all, she actually wasn't born a human" You say. "She was a huge, powerful monster who got turned into a tiny, adorable girl when Malteris changed all the women into what they are now"

"What does she look like?" Ilica asks.

"White hair, blue-white wings, little blue crystal horns..." You say. "She's behind me isn't she?"

Ilica nods, and a new weight on your back further confirms it.

"Good afternoon, your majesty" You say. "Come to join us for lunch?"

"My strength may be needed should the enemy decide to move, so I'm fitting in a meal where I can" Lyvia says. "Are these your friends?"

You nod. "They were on the ship that crashed" You say. "Ilica, Emi, Vivian, this is Queen Lyvia"

"Greetings" Lyvia says.

"Th-the Queen?" Emi says. "Should we... bow?"

Lyvia shrugs, then leans down and steals some of your lunch as Vivian crawls across the table to investigate the newcomer.

"Ah, another tiny person" Lyvia says, reaching out towards Vivi.

"She started it" Lyvia says.

Vivi growls, her tail flicking back and forth.

"And you. Maybe try not picking fights with powerful, ancient ice leviathans" You say, poking Vivi on the nose.

She bites you and starts clawing your arm, but you knew that was going to happen.

"Fighting me is only a slightly less bad idea" You say, pinning her to the table with one hand so you can scratch her stomach. "We need to find you someone your own size"

"Mrow" Vivi says, sitting back up and shaking herself off when you take your hand away.

"So how's Derrick doing, anyway?" Emi asks. "Is he here?"

You nod. "He'll probably be with Marybell right now..." You say.

"Do they have some sort of schedule?" Ilica asks.

"No. He's pretty much on top of her all the time now" You say.

"Like... riding her?" Ilica asks.

"Yep" You say.

"Does that mean they're... a thing?" Ilica asks.

"Yep" You say again.

Ilica looks mildly amused by this news, but Emi looks ecstatic. "That's wonderful!" She says. "She must be so happy..."

"She does seem to be. We should finish up here and go find them. I'm sure they'll both be glad to see you guys" You say.

"Well eat up then, man. We're waitin' on you" Ilica says.

You look down and notice that they're both finished. With all the talking, you forgot to actually eat... no big deal though. You can fix that pretty easily...

You let Ilica fill you in more on the situation back south while you eat...

"-so after they wouldn't comply, the hunters took over he island" Ilica says.

"The whole island?" You ask.

"It's not a very big island" Ilica says. "Mom and the rest of the experienced fighters stormed the palace and let all the captives out, then when we noticed the island was blockaded and sprites were being shot down we loaded up our quickest available ship and made a break for it"

"Not quick enough apparently" You say.

"Not quick enough is right. You have no idea how happy we all were to see Lubrian banners here. No way we could have pushed on to Lutain" She says.

While Ilica talks about recent events, Emi is trying to find out more about the old war from Lyvia. It's slow going for her, as she hasn't learned that you need a certain level specificity with Lyvia.

Vivi is doing her own thing, slowly inching Ilica's cup towards the edge of the table whenever she thinks no one is looking.

"So who else was being held captive on Ebiha?" You ask.

"Emi, a few hunters, Widows of the lords Kameh killed, basically anyone else who resented his rise to power" She replies. "And resent is a big thing over there right now. Most of their fighters are honor bound to follow Kameh, but a good portion of those dudes don't necessarily like the guy"

"Controversy is inevitable when you rise to the top on a pile of severed heads" You say. "Sounds like if I get rid of him-"

"Don't be mistaken," Emi cuts in. "He has plenty of real support. Killing him may cause just as many as it would solve..."

"But the problems it would solve are all the immediate issues, while the problems it would cause are not" You say. "And if they're not immediate, then we can deal with them after the legion"

Emi looks down. "Y-yeah... you're right..." She says.

...

Okay, there's definitely more to this that she isn't telling you. For all the things she's good at, poker is not one of them. But you can get her alone and ask about that later...

"Well, we should go and-"

You're cut off by the thud of Ilica's glass hitting the ground. Thankfully it doesn't break. Vii sits up and looks quite proud of herself.

"Mew" Vivi says.

Ilica sighs, picks up the glass, and puts it back on the table. "Really?" She asks.

"Mew"

"She obviously wants to be a hunter like you and Katherine" You say. "Glasses are just the first step"

"No, she's just being cross because we left her fort behind..." Ilica says. "I'll explain on the way, let's go"

You take a moment to stack up the plates so they're easier to take away, then scoop up the kitty and head out.

"So... fort?" You ask, giving Vivi head scratches.

"We made her a kitty fort at the Ebiha Isle hunter's hall, since she was so stressed out about moving around so much" Ilica says. "She seemed so content in there, I almost wanted to make one for myself..."

"Was this fort made of something special?" You ask.

"Not really. Just a box and a beat up old pillow" Ilica replies.

"Mew" Vivi says.

"And the sign, right" Ilica says. "There was a little sign on the box stating that it was hers"

"Well you're welcome to rebuild Fort Vivi at my house" You say. "Speaking of which, what is your plan now?"

"Now...?" Ilica asks. "Dunno. Didn't think this far ahead"

"If you'd have me, I'd like to fight by your side again" Emi says.

"And you would be welcome" You say. "Here, that is. I can't take either of you to Leon"

"Planning on taking someone else?" Ilica asks.

"Well my usual travelling partner is in the infirmary, and I don't think anyone else would be comfortable with blitzing across the Antolian countryside in pitch darkness..." You say. "In fact I would be uncomfortable putting just about anyone through that, so no"

"I can understand that" Ilica says. "I'll bring Vivi up to Lutain as soon as I can and make sure she gets settled, then come right back"

"I take it you can handle yourself in a fight now" You say.

Ilica smiles and pats the hand crossbow strapped to her hip. "Not just for show" She says.

You find Derrick and Marybell taking a break just outside of the north castle. Derrick isn't riding Marybell at the moment. Rather he's sitting up on a railing to put his head at her level.

"Ilica? Emi?" Derrick calls out. "We just heard about what happened. Are you alright?"

"Peachy" Ilica replies.

Derrick hops down and the two of them meet you halfway. "Is Leon really under attack?" Derrick asks.

Emi nods. "The fleet is en route" She says.

"And so am I" You add. "Later though. Once nobody can see me leaving"

"That's... no offense, but can you really hold back the entire southern fleet?" Derrick asks.

"Not the whole fleet. Due to a technicality I have the right to challenge their leader to single combat" You say. "I will excercise that right, turn him to dust, and be back in time to finish the siege"

Marybell seems to notice something about Emi, and puts a hand on her shoulder. "Mind if we speak in private?" Marybell asks after a quiet couple of moments.

No one objects, and the two of them head out of earshot.

"Catch" You tell Ilica as you toss Vivi at her head.

Ilica fumbles as Vivi latches onto the side of her face. "J-th-what gives?" She asks.

"It's rude to eavesdrop" You say.

"I can't help it. The ears just turn when they hear a noise that stands out" She says. "Back me up here, Vivi- ow!"

Vivi chews on Ilica's ear, so you give her a hand and take the kitty back.

"Do I want to know why Vivian is here?" Derrick asks. "I can't imagine you brought her on that airship on purpose..."

"Same reason why she was in Bell's Run" You say.

Derrick nods, and the four of you stand in silence for a moment. "So... this is all kind of a huge mess" Derrick says, pointing up at the airships.

"I could conjure a blizzard" Lyvia says. "Cold may not bother the demons, but these southern folk won't last long with my icy breath upon them"

"I thought you needed the devices on your palace to change the weather" You say.

Lyvia looks disappointed. "Curses... I had forgotten that..." She says.

"Worst case scenario, at a glance our warships could take theirs in a brawl" Derrick says. "Theirs are faster and lighter, while ours have heavier armor and armaments. If we fire the opening salvo and catch them flat footed we could take back control of the skies..."

"But...?" You ask.

"Oh, no buts. Just if we make the first move we catch them flat footed" He says. "Whoever strikes first has the advantage here, and if they had charged right in we would've been in real trouble"

"But they stopped, so we have a strategic opportunity" You say.

"I mean, there's probably a good reason why we're not attacking" Derrick says. "I'm sure someone else has thought of this too"

"That's what you said last time you had a good plan, and you were wrong then" You say. "Furthermore, how can you tell all that about their ships just by looking?"

"I can't, not by looking at the ships anyway" He says. "I looked at southern tactics first and foremost. Big bulky ships would have little use to raiders who employ hit and run tactics. And there's the fact that they managed to catch up to a Guild transport"

"Are guild transports fast?" You ask.

"Normally? No" He says. "But that particular vessel design is an emergency dropship for sudden threats. I learned that while we were out at the culling camp"

"I didn't even know there were that many kinds of airships" You say. "Did the hunters have a course on that sort of thing?"

"No. They were using the emergency dropships out there to get the newer hunters accustomed to them" Derrick says.

"Cool... though you really should tell the Commander all of this" You say. "Worst case scenario she's heard it already and it only costs a few minutes"

"Really?" He asks. "I... guess... when Marybell comes back-"

"I'll tell her where you went" You say.

He nods, and heads off.

"And here I thought he was over his crippling lack of self-confidence" You say, idly scratching Vivi's ears as she purrs contentedly. "He's taken the lead in like 3 different battles at this point. You think that would have given him a boost"

"Was he up on the centaur's back for those 3 battles?" Ilica asks.

"That could be it" You say.

Like she knew you were talking about her, Marybell comes back. She informs you that Emi's not feeling very well, so they'll be back at Marybell's tent. Ilica and Lyvia decide to accompany them, leaving you with the kitten.

It strikes you as a bit odd that all of them would go if it's just Emi not feeling well, but you shrug it off.

"Must be a girl thing" You say.

"Mrow" Vivi replies.

"How would you like to go visit the mouse?" You ask.

"Merr" Vivi replies.

"Well too bad. My legs are doing the walking, so I get to pick the destinations" You say.

You head to the infirmary first, not bothering to check with Coral because you figure she'll still be there... which turns out to be the wrong choice, as they discharged Pip to her own tent as she was pretty much good to go, and they needed space for the injured from the fight and the crash.

When you get to your tent, you find Pip propped up on about a dozen pillows reading a book that you can tell falls into the usual 'cheesy romance' category with just a glance at the cover.

"I hope I'm not interrupting" You say as you step in.

Pip looks up from the book with a smirk. "Not really. This book is actually pretty bad" She says. "Like 'uses the word luscious 3 times in 1 paragraph' bad"

"Yet you were still reading" You say.

"Easier to trudge through than to go get a new book" Pip says, pointing to Vivi. "I see you found a friend"

"She was on the airship. Ilica left her with me when they all went to Marybell's tent because Emi wasn't feeling well" You say.

"Ahh. Girl talk" Pip says.

"I take it you've heard what's happened" You say.

"I got the gist of it. Hunter airship crashed, southern seafleet moving on Leon, southern airfleet holding the skies to the south" Pip says. "Any idea what the plan is?"

"The plan..." You say as you sit down beside her. "Is that I'm going to Leon to fight the southern leader in single combat, and hopefully that'll be enough to convince them all to go home"

"Magic's allowed in southern duels, so he won't stand much of a chance" She says. "Don't get cocky though. Your big hits take a second to charge, and southern sword-mages are renowned for their speed. If he's strong enough to unite the isles, he can make a lot happen in one second while you're still gathering power"

"Got any other tips?" You ask.

"Based on what I know about southern duels? Uhh..." She puts her book down and purses her lips. "Low blows are allowed, so feel free to go for the nads... aaaand the fight doesn't end until one person has lost their sword..."

"So it's not a fight to the death?" You ask.

"Nope. In fact, even if you kill your opponent it's not a win until the sword has left his hands" She says.

"So what happens if someone like... ties their hands to their sword, cuts them off, and throws them somewhere their opponent can't get them?" You ask.

"That has actually happened, if I remember right" She says. "While it does count as 'not losing your sword', it is considered a dick move and I'm pretty sure they executed the guy who tried it, then left his sword in the ocean"

"How about this then?" You ask, floating your mageblade around without activating it.

"Nope. Sword's gotta be in your hands. Just cause-"

Pip gets cut off as Vivian pounces at the floating blade, misses, then starts hopping around until she comes to a stop and tries to pretend that never happened.

...

"Just cause you don't need your hands, doesn't mean they wont DQ you on a technicality" She says.

"Gotcha" You say. "Is there anything I can do for you?"

"I could use some entertainment, if you feel like... I dunno, getting me a new book or something" She says. "One that isn't quite so 'luscious'..."

"Vivi is entertaining" You say. "Make a little mote of like and she'll chase it around for hours"

"Like..." Pip does just that, making a little technicoloured puff of light. "This?"

As you expected, Vivi's eyes lock onto it as Pip moves it around. The kitten approaches cautiously, slowly reaching out a paw... before Pip suddenly makes it flash, causing Vivi to flip the hell out.

"Okay this is fun... but I don't give it very long" She says.

You tap Pip under the chin and grab her book as you stand back up. "Your stuff is back with the supply carts, right?"

She nods. "While you're out there, think you could just bring my extra bag? I've got some other stuff in there that I'd like to break out since I've got the night off" She says.

"Will do" You say. "I'll be right back"

You head out to the supply carts and after some searching and asking around, you find the one with Pip's bag in it. It is... not what you were expecting. It's bright pink, which contrasts pretty much everything you have ever seen Pip wear, use, or own.

When you get back to the tent, Pip is still engrossed in playing with Vivi.

"I never thought pink was your color" You say, as you place the bag next to her.

"I'm allowed to like girly things" She says, letting the light dissipate and leaving Vivi looking around in confusion.

"Mew" Vivi says.

"I don't think I've ever even seen you look at something pink" You say.

"I like to wear it where nobody can see. Easier to hide when you wear grey, but it's such a dull color" She says, as she rifles through her bag for something.

"So what... all your underwear is pink with like... flowers and stuff?" You ask as you sit over on your own bedroll.

"Not all, but I'm ninety... nine percent sure that describes what I'm wearing right now" She says, before turning to you with a shocked expression. "You didn't peep on me while I was getting dressed, did you?"

You shrug. "Lucky guess. Besides, all the things I like most are the things you don't hide under your clothes" You say, picking up Vivi as an example. "The little ears, tails, paws... stuff like that. It's the cutest"

"Yeah I didn't peg you for a peeker anyhow" She says, before not-so-subtly pulling out her waistband to check her panties. "And whaddya know? Guess I'm wearin' the 1% panties tonight"

...

"I'm not sure I follow... does that mean you were wrong, or are these ones somehow special?" You ask.

"1% as in 'I was 99% sure, and I was wrong'" She says. "I don't think I own any special panties... what would those even look like anyway?"

You shrug again and lounge back, trying and failing to ignore the fact that Vivi is gnawing on your hand. "Alright you, I know it's stressful but you need to chill out" You say.

Vivi growls in response.

"How about this..." You say, sitting up straight and getting to work wrapping her in your blanket. "This worked last time... I think"

You remember back in Bell's run how you could keep her relatively calm when you wrapped her in your cloak, so you do the same with your blanket. The effect is immediate. She stops with the biting and scratching and starts to purr...

"Okay that's pretty dang cute" Pip says.

You raise an eyebrpw at her.

"So what did you want from that thing anyway?" You ask.

"Books, mostly. But there's also..." She says, going back to rifling through the bright pink bag. She eventually pulls out a layered onesie, with the inner layer being dark-ish yellow, and the outer layer being lighter yellow with randomly sized and placed holes in it. "These"

...

"Is that... Are those cheese pajamas?" You ask.

Pip smiles and nods. "Lululu got them for me like... a year ago, but I'd never be caught dead wearing them out where people can see me. Which is why I'm putting them on now, because I'm off the hook for any night time crises due to my injury"

"How are you feeling now, anyway?" You ask.

"Better" She says. "They patched up the wound as well as they could and cleared all the blood out of my lungs. Full healing will wait until I've gotten some rest and regained my strength"

"How did they clear the blood out... blood magic?" You ask.

"Water. They do this thing where they flood the lung with liquid, pull it all back out, then fill it with air again" She says. "Strangest god damn thing I've ever felt, but it did the trick"

"Well so long as it did the trick..." You say, scratching the now sleeping Vivi between the ears. "Hang on... is blood magic a thing?"

"Not really" Pip says. "Apparently blood is kinda special somehow? Lululu knows more than me on this subject. Ask her if you get the chance"

"Gotcha" You say.

"Anyway, either shut your eyes or get out. I wanna put these on" Pip says.

"Seriously?" You ask. "Man, I just got comfortable"

"Alright" You say, laying back and shutting your eyes. "Go ahead"

"Cool" She replies.

You hear the sound of her grunting as she stands and secures the tent flap, then you hear her getting to work. With nothing better to do, you count the number of things you hear her discard...

"Are you getting all the way naked?" You ask.

"Of course. I'm not gonna wear underwear under my pajamas like some weirdo" Pip says. "And why in the gods' name would I keep my bra on if I'm goin' for comfort?"

"You were still wearing a bra? I figured you'd have lost it after the injury" You say.

"Oddly enough..." Pip says, as you hear her stepping into the onesie. "The bolt missed my bra completely. Struck too low for it, so they didn't even have to remove the bloody thing"

"Wasn't it well... bloody?" You ask.

Pip steps back over to the pile. "A little bit, now that I'm looking more closely..." She says. "But I wasn't about to take it off. Removing the bra is a commitment"

"How so?" You ask.

"It's like a statement that you won't be doing anything afterward where your nipples poking out a bit will bother you, or having to worry about too much bounce-age... not that I ever really have to worry about that" She says.
...

"Is that... a big commitment?" You ask.

"Hey man, even little commitments can be scary sometimes" She says. "You can open your eyes now"

"I know for a fact that you aren't dressed yet" You say.

Pip lets out a knowing laugh. "I knew you were listening for that" She says.

"Are you almost done?" You ask.

"Nope" She says. "This might be a while longer, in fact. I've never worn these before so it never occurred to me that they don't have a tail-hole... shouldn't take too long to cut one, so just get comfy"

>1/2
>>
"Okay. Now you can open your eyes" She says.

This time you're pretty sure it's safe, so you open up and look around.

"How do I look?" Pip asks, giving a little twirl.

"Cheesy" You say.

"There's the response I was hoping for" She says, as she collapses back into her pillows. "So did you peek?"

"Nope" You say.

"Good man" Pip says. "Not that I'm hidin' anything particularly impressive under my clothes, but I still appreciate that my trust was rewarded"

"Just so long as you give me the same consideration if our roles are ever switched" You say.

"Might as well just do things this way. Beats havin' to wait outside" She says.

"So is taking your bra off actually that much of a commitment?" You ask. "I'm still stuck on this..."

"I dunno about most girls, but for me it is. I keep stuff in there, man" Pip says, leaning over to her pile of discarded clothes to grab her slightly bloodstained pink bra with little hearts all over it. She turns it toward you and peels back the inner lining to reveal a hidden compartment in each cup. "See? Not just underwear. I've got a little knife here, this little pocket has multi purpose chewing gum, these things let off a strong smell when you crack 'em, lock picks, wire..."

"You sure load a lot of stuff into a small space" You say.

She shrugs and tosses the bra back into the pile. "There's room for it" She says, poking herself in the chest. "People rarely assume I'm hiding stuff in there, so I basically get to carry my kit everywhere. The only downside is that it's kinda hard to subtly pull something out of your bra"

You nod. "I could see that" You say. "Is there a male equivalent of the utility bra?"

"None that you'd want to use..." She says. "Although I did know I guy who kept stuff clenched between his butt cheeks..."

"I'll stick to having my stuff in plain sight, thanks" You say.

"I might give it a shot. With my tail it'd be easier take stuff out..." She says. "But harder to walk naturally... on second thought nevermind"

You chuckle, and sit in silence for a while.

"So you're actually gonna ride all the way to Leon and challenge this dude to a duel, huh?" She asks.

"That is the plan" You say. "Why, something wrong?"

"No. It's what has to happen" She says. "I'm just wondering if I could find some sucker dumb enough to bet against you at this point so I can net some gold from this"

"I'll take that as your roundabout way of saying you believe in me" You say.

"Hey, you're a safe bet these days" She says. "Just don't do anything risky, and remember what I told you"

"I will" You say. "Did you really send me out to get that bag just for the cheese pajamas?"

"And my emergency chocolate" She replies. "Want some?"

"Hey if you're willing to share, I'm not about to turn down chocolate" You say.

Before Pip can reply, someone taps on the entrance to the tent.

"Anyone in there?" Ilica asks.

"Yep" You reply.

"Can I come in?" Ilica asks.

"Sure" Pip says.

Ilica reaches in and undoes the tie keeping the flap shut, then pokes her head in. "Oh, good. She is with you" Ilica says. "She sleeping?"

"Like a baby" You reply. "Well... not like a baby, since she is a baby... but yes. Sleeping"

"Is it cool if I leave her with you for the night?" Ilica asks.

"Sure... is something wrong?" You ask. "Emi's not hurt, is she?"

"Not... on the outside" Ilica says.

"Oh... well alright. If this helps" You say.

"Thanks. I'll see you a bit later, okay?"

You nod, and Ilica pops back out, tying the flap back into place as she goes.

"You saw that too, right?" Pip asks.

"Yeah, definitely something I'm not being told" You say, as you lay back. "I got the same vibe from Emi earlier as well"

You do as she asks, since you already know what she plans to do. After holding your mouth open for a few seconds, a piece of chocolate comes flying into it.

"Nice toss" You say.

"Thanks" She replies. "You sure you should be so relaxed? Don't you have a trip to plan?"

You shrug. "Not like there's too much detail to it" You say.

"You know how to get to Leon from here?" She asks.

"Kinda... maybe... no not really" You say.

Pip rolls her eyes. "Bring your map over here" She says. "I can give you a hand with this, at least..."

"Much appreciated" You say, pulling the hunter's map out of your pocket as you get up and head over to Pip.

"Alright let's see... your best bet is over here..."

You sit next to Pip and cradle the sleeping Vivi as she points out the various ways you could get to Lubars from here. There are plenty, but she's clearly trying to work one out that's both fast and reliable.

"So follow the river to here... take the left fork around here..." You say.

"And that should take you right to Locke. You know the way from there, I assume" She says. "Now remember, these roads are old as fuck so expect some bumps. Also there may or may not be a bridge over this river on the border, so you could endup having to track north for a bit to find one"

"I guess nobody really does maintenance on roads and bridges along a hostile border" You say.

"Along the border? Yes. Across the border? No" She says. "I had a spot around here where I used to keep a little raft, but that was hit or miss even when I used it pretty frequently so you're better off finding a bridge"

"I could always make a ramp and jump it like a badass" You say.

"Whatever works" She says. "So long as you don't cock it up, yeah?"

"I've made jumps like this before" You say.

"I heard. Madelaine says you nearly killed her" She says.

"She's just being dramatic. I had it handled" You reply, as you fold the map back up and put it away.

"Yes well not everybody handles well on those wheels of yours" Pip says.

"It's pretty much just you and Ilica who seem to enjoy riding on it" You say.

Pip shrugs, and pops another chocolate into her mouth. "So what's your plan now?" She asks. "If you're leavin' at dark then you've got a few hours, but I imagine you'll want to rest up a bit and stuff before then..."

You lounge back into Pip's pile of pillows. "I could relax here a bit longer. No need to risk waking the kitty by moving around" You say.

"Suit yourself" She replies. "You thought about any snappy 1-liners for your fight?"

"Not really" You say. "Do I need them?"

"Hey man, nothin' humiliates a person quite like gettin' zinged in their moment of defeat" She says. "You could go like... uhh... 'didn't see that Kameh-n?'... or something"

You shake your head.

"Alright, it's not my best work. I'l admit" She says. "Think about it. You have an entire day and night of riding to come up with something. Make it worth putting into the history books"

"You think they'd actually write it into the history books?" You ask.

"If it's good enough, yeah" She says. "And keep it kid friendly too"

"Well as you said, I've got time" You say.

It's quiet for a moment, with the exception of Vivi's constant purring.

"She really likes that blanket wrap thing you've got there" Pip says.

"I figured if it worked with my cloak back in Bell's Run, it'd work with a much softer blanket here" You reply.

"May I?" Pip asks, holding her hands out.

"You want to hold the kitty?" You ask.

"Well I ain't reachin' for your belt buckle" She replies. "Come on, it's not like I'm gonna drop her"

You chuckle and hand Vivi over to Pip. "You've got sure hands, I'm not worried" You say.

Pip takes Vivi and starts scratching her under the ear. Vivi responds by working her paws free and kneading Pip's chest.

"Should I be concerned about this?" Pip asks.

"Nah, it's a kitty thing. Means she's happy" You say.

"Okay. Just so long as she doesn't dig those claws in too deep..." She says. "So uhh... bit of an awkward question..."

"Shoot" You say.

"You put any thought into your girl situation lately?" Pip asks. "Without naming names, I know quite a few ladies who are into you. You may have to pick one eventually"

"I'll worry about that when we're done with all this. I need to keep my head in the game" You say. "And to be honest... I'm just not ready"

"I can respect that" She says, handing you a chocolate and taking one for herself.

...

"You don't have money riding on this, do you?" You ask.

"No. That was a joke from way back" Pip says. "You never gamble with a gal's heart"

"Words to live by" You say. "Out of curiosity..."

"You wanna know who I was talking about?" She asks.

"Actually no" You say. "I was wondering what you'd do in my shoes"

"Well for one your shoes are a little too big for my feet" She says. "That is both a joke, and a metaphor about how I've never been in a position like yours"

"Very well put together" You say.

"Just like your shoes" She replies. "But yeah... you've got like 6 or 7 gals pinin' for you, and I don't even think I know that many dudes. So it's hard to guess what I'd do"

"Just guess" You say.

"Alright... well... you already know my feelings on commitment... so what I'd probably do is start shutting people out as I learn that their feelings for me go beyond friendship, out of fear that I'll fuck up our relationship" Pip says. "All the while not realizing that my fear of ruining my relationships is ruining my relationships until it's too late and all my friends have moved on leaving me to die cold and alone"

...

"How's that?" She asks.

"That was... do you... do you need a hug?" You ask.

She shrugs. "I'll take one if you're givin' 'em"

You're at an awkward angle for a normal hug, so you put an arm over her shoulder. She turns towards you and leans her head into your chest.

"So yeah... don't do that" She says. "Y'know that probably explains why I have so few friends..."

"It was also depressing as hell" You say.

"Just a little" she replies. "I don't know if that's actually what would happen, but just... knowing me, Y'know?"

"You know I'm sure you could find someone if you put yourself out there" You say. "You're young, good looking, easy to talk to..."

"I'm also pretty well known, and there's no way to tell if the dudes I'd catch were the ones who like me for me, or if they like me for who they thought I was" She says.

"Only 1 way to find out" You say.

"I'm fine not openin' that box" She says. "Dates and stuff don't seem to be my kinda thing"

"You wouldn't want to get taken out for a nice dinner? Maybe wear a nice pink dress?" You ask.

"That'd look ridiculous" She says.

"Says the girl wearing cheese pajamas" You reply.

...

"Fuck" She says.

"Thought so"

"Mew"

"Oh, look who's awake" Pip says.

Vivi paws at Pip's hand, bringing it up to her mouth to nip at it.

"Okay, what does that mean?" Pip asks.

"She's probably hungry" You say.

"I'm in the mood for like... breakfast" She says. "If you can somehow bring me... eggs, bacon, and toast, I shall be eternally grateful"

"I could probably manage that... what about you, Vivi?" You ask.

"Mew" Vivi says.

"Much simpler. See you two in a bit" You say as you head out, tying the flap closed behind you so nobody who passes by will see Pip's cheesy wardrobe.

As you make your way to the mess tent you consider some different jokes you could make about that onesie, settling on a decent one about how you were going to ask for a cheese omelette but figured she wouldn't want more of something she was literally covered in.

Not your best work, but it should get a laugh.

The cooks are glad to fill Pip's request, but you'll have to go bug Ilica if you want a bottle for Vivian. Looking around the hall you see Meyu sitting alone. He looks perfectly happy without company, but that doesn't mean you can't bug him...

Sure. I think the best thing we could do though is find her someone else. I feel like we know too much about each other's relationships and also we are not good for her. She has a significant inferiority complex and we are going to overshadow her to the point she constantly wonders why she is here. Pip needs her own identity that does not involve being an accessory to the royal family.

>>
>>2805048
Honestly, Pip is a bit high maintenance. I don't think she needs a lover, but a friend. Derrick's crippling self doubt wasn't solved (rather, in the process of being improved) by us trying to get in his pants.

Entering a relationship with her when she's in such a downer state can make her problems worse in basically as many ways as we could make it better.
>>
>>2805061
To be fair, you can't prove that Yuu getting into Derrick's pants WOULDN'T solve his issues.
Jokes aside though, I was never advocating for a relationship with her RIGHT NOW. She's not ready for it, and Yuu isn't ready for it. And there's a big war going on, like Yuu himself pointed out when talking about relationship shit earlier.
Any serious (theoretical) action between him and pip would be a good deal in the future, I think. And in the future, there's a good chance that both her and yuu would have their shit together by a large margin, enough that it's viable to actually consider something like that between them.

Instead of waiting around for your meals to come, you figure now is a good time to get get Vivi's stuff. So you let one of the staff know what's up so they don't think you've disappeared, and head off to Maybell's tent.

Fighting back the urge to eavesdrop, you tap on the entrance. You're surprised as Madelaine's head pops out...

"Oh hey" Madelaine says. "What brings you here?"

"Is Ilica in there?" You ask.

"Gimme a sec..." Madelaine says, slipping back inside.

After a bit of whispering, Ilica's head pops out.

"What's up?" She asks.

"Vivi is awake and she's hungry. I don't suppose you've-"

"Oh! Of course" Ilica says, as she too slips back inside. Her hand pops out a moment later to hand a bottle off to you, then she pokes her head back out once you've taken it. "Luckily I had that in my bag... did you need something else?"

I will readily admit I have always supported Namaki. That said,I like to think my decision is based on what is good for the character and narratively makes sense to me. One of my first considerations with a spouse in a society where you have lines of nobility as well as people who are just vastly stronger in magic is some kind of parity in the relationship. Even if we don't apply that standard, the rest of society will and our spouse probably will as well. Pip has already been harmed by this, and she is thus going to be particularly aware of it. Which is why I think it is best if we try to find way to elevate her in a way that is personal to her and not to us.

Admittedly, my theory does limit our selections. There are only really two women who have magical power that can be considered in our league - Lyvia and Namaki. There are quite a few more with status in the high nobility, royalty, or similarly high organizations that can bring some kind of skill or connections we lack. This has always been the in for the -ellas and Emi. Realistically most of the other nobles do not have the personal in with us and are not contenders right now. None of the nobles really have the power parity interestingly. The only one who knocks both boxes out of the park is Lyvia, but we cultivated a different relationship with her.
>>
>>2805092
I enjoy Namaki and used to be on the Namaki train (mostly for ability synergy and the fact that she's one foxy lady if i'm being honest), but I feel we've built up a much stronger bond with other people than her so far. It's a little hard, at this juncture, for me to see Yuu ending up with her in a long-term/permanent manner. They get along well, and hell, there's even some tension there, but it currently feels pretty weak compared to some of the other potential waifus.
>>
>>2805103
The primary reason for that is Namaki has been absent from the plot other than our letter-writing campaign. Not that this is unjustifiable, we knew she would not leave town without extreme circumstances, it's just a fact.

I don't think anyone has particularly made progress though since then. Lyvia daughter-zoned herself after initial interest (I think if she was five years older mentally and physically she'd have won by now and any choice would be a formality). Cheska's character arc end ironically ended up wrecking her primary means of sticking around with us. Lianna has been pursued, but ultimately she can't be married. I don't feel like anything has really changed with Madeline either, despite what happened.
>>
"Out of curiosity, how many people are in there?" You ask.

"Like 5... or 6..." Ilica says, poking her head back in for a second before re-emerging. "Emi, Me, Madelaine, Marybell, Lyvia, Lulu... and that's it"

"I didn't think you could fit 6 people into these tents..." You say.

"It's tight" Ilica says. "How's Vivi doin' anyway?"

"Pretty good. Like I said she's been sleeping up 'till now. Pip's watching her for the moment while I'm out grabbing food" You say.

"How is she with her?" Ilica asks.

"Surprisingly good" You say. "You'd think a mouse and a kitten wouldn't get along so well, but she seems to be full of surprises today..."

Ilica giggles. "Let me know if you need anything else, okay?" She asks.

You nod, and she slips back into the tent. You stand there for a moment wondering how they fit so many people inside, before heading back to the mess tent.

...

Seriously. 6 regular girls you could understand, but both Emi and Marybell take up quite a bit of space. The only way you could see it working is if Emi's tail went around the edges so everyone could sit on it... but then where does Marybell go?

You shake your head and push thoes thoughts aside. It might bother you, but the logistics of fitting a Serpid and a Centaur into one of those tents is not important.

When you get back to the mess tent, they've finished making what you asked for. So you thank them and head back...

>1/2
>>
When you get back, you stop outside the tent door to shift your things around so you can untie the flap. As you do, you stop and listen...

You can hear Pip talking to Vivi in a cutesie tone, getting little 'mews' in response. That only lasts for a few seconds, as Pip hears you trying to stifle your laughter.

"Who was it that said it was rude to eavesdrop?" Pip asks.

"It was me" You say, as you open up the tent and step in. "In my defense, I did not plan on eavesdropping"

"Suuuuuuure" She says.

You hand her her dinner and sit down. "It's pretty plain. I was gonna ask them to make a cheese omelette, but I figured you have enough cheese" You say.

"Be honest. How long did it take you to come up with that?" She asks.

"A couple minutes" You say.

"That's fair" Pip says.

"Mew"

"Yes, we got some for you too..." You say, taking the little bundle from Vivi so Pip can eat. You're pretty exprienced with the whole bottle feeding thing at this point, so it's a simple thing to get Vivi set up.

"So..." You say.

The more the girls talk about this in increasingly large groups, the less I think this guy is Emi's childhood friend and more that we're going to be the butt of the joke of some archaic law if we beat him.

"I take it you enjoyed yourself while I was out" You say.

Pip shrugs as she munches on some bacon. "Kitty's surprisingly easy to please, and her reactions to just about everything are hilarious" Pip says.

"Yeah she's pretty dang cute" You say, pausing for a moment before continuing... "So I was wondering if you could help me with something..."

"What's up?" She asks.

"When I went to see Ilica to get the bottle, they had 6 people in that little tent" You say.

"6 including Emi and Belly?" She asks.

You nod.

"How the hell did they manage that?" She asks.

"That's what I was wondering" You say.

"I think the real question is: what are they doing in there, having a group therapy session?" Pip asks. "Is Emi's issue bad enough to require 5 friends to sort it out?"

"Who knows?" You ask.

"I'd say I would go over and scout for you, but then I'd have to get changed again and I'm just not feelin' that concerned" Pip says.

"I understand" You reply. "Maybe Coral could scope it out for me"

Coral pops out of your collar, looking enthusiastic as ever.

"Except you couldn't relay any ifo back, so you just sit tight" You say, patting her head.

"But maybe... Kanzka?" You call out.

A small trap door opens by the entrance to the tent, just big enough for Kanzka to poke her head out. "Yes master?" She asks.

"What the fuck? How long have you been there?" Pip asks. "How did you even get there?"

"I have been burrowing all the way from Lutain, and I have always been here" Kanzka says. "What is it you need?"

"Would you be able to find out what my other friends are talking about and report it back to me if it's something serious?" You ask.

"As you wish" Kanzka says, sliding back under the trap door.

"I forgot all about her" Pip says.

"For a while there I did too..." You say. "Now, I need to get some sleep if I'm gonna go all night. Mind watching Vivian and waking me in an hour or two?"

"I can manage that" Pip says as she takes the bundle of kitty from you. "Sweet dreams"

Pip wakes you by getting Vivi to jump on your face, as she tries and fails to hold back her laughter. Vivi just seems disappointed that the thing she was chasing disappeared.

Once Pip's done laughing you leave her with Vivi a while longer so you can do some prep. You start by running basic maintenance on the Rook, making sure all your equipment is in order, going over your route again...

"Getting ready to go?"

You turn to see Emi approaching from behind you.

"Not leaving just yet, but I'd like to be set when the time comes" You reply.

Emi lets out a silent giggle. "It's been what... a month since I last saw you?" She asks. "You've matured quite a bit"

"So is there anything else I need to know about this challenge thing?" You ask. "Any specific words I have to say, that sort of thing?"

"You will have to tell them that you're the owner of Kou's blade" She says. "By tradition, Kameh will be carrying it with him and he'll have to turn it over to you"

"So it's that sword that I can't drop, not my own?" You ask.

Emi nods.

"I guess that means I'm goin' no hands on my mageblades..." You say.

Emi looks confused, so you float your mageblade off its peg...

I actually kind of agree with this. "How did you figure all that out?" She asks.

"I'm smart, and you have a terrible poker face" You say.

She sighs. "Look... It's really nothing you need to worry about, okay?" She asks.

You consider pressuring her, but judging by the look on her face, that won't end well. "Alright fine" You say. "But I'm not telling you how I control my mageblade without touching it"

You've got a few people you need to or want to write. Most of them are back in Lutain, since you need to let them know about Ilica and Vivi, as well as the child you found in the castle. You'd also like to send something to Namaki and possibly put something together for Stella, if Quria has a way to get it to her.

So you find an unused table back by the supply carts, along with a pen and some papers, and get to work.

The letters to Lutain come first. You start with a short one to Belladonna letting her know what she needs to know, then you write another more personal one to Cheska...

While you're at it, you write a simple one for each of the little devils, and another for Hella... and you briefly consider writing one for Lianna, but a written letter won't do her much good so you decide against it.

After that you spend some time writing a final letter to Namaki, and... you're pretty sure that covers everyone you aren't going to see in the near future.

You take the letters to the mail spider and she files them away. Now that the army as recieved a letter from Namaki, they actually know how to get one back to her.

With that out of the way, you head to Altea's tent to go talk to her before you leave...

>1/2
>>
When you reach the tent, the sun is almost gone...

"All set?" She asks.

"For the most part, yeah" You say, as you sit down across from her. "Are you gonna miss me?"

Altea smiles. "Of course" She says. "But you are needed elsewhere, so I'll survive"

You chuckle at that.

"Are you ready?" She asks.

"I am" You reply.

"Good. Now, you might not have my blood, but you are my son. You can't breath fire, but you have the dragon's fury" She says. "It's been quite some time since the south has been bold enough to attack us like this, even if they're only doing it because our attention is elsewhere"

"Want me to throw in some extra ass kickin'?" You ask.

Altea stands up and fixes you with a fiersome gaze. "I want you to show them what happens to a fish when it pulls on the tail of a dragon" She says.

"So... slice 'em up and fry 'em 'till they're nice and crispy?" You ask. "I'm not much of a chef, but I think I can manage that. Did you talk to Derrick?"

She nods. "We're going with his plan" She says. "Ship captains are coordinating as we speak. The first salvo will be fired at dawn"

"Sounds like quite the show. Shame I'll miss it" You say.

"Son, if you can protect the capital I'll have the ships fire a salute when you return" She says.

"I like the sound of that..." You say.

Altea stands up, and you follow suit.

"Ride fast and fight well, Yuu" She says.

"Have i ever done anything less?" You ask.

Altea smiles and steps around the table to hug you. "Now, go on. I've got to go up and see my captains..." she says as she lets you go.

You head out of the tent and get Coral to show you where Emi is. You catch her as she's leaving the mess tent.

"Are you heading out now?" She asks.

You nod. "I'll be back in no time" You say.

She gives you a troubled smile, and brushes an errant lock of hair away from her eyes. You hold your arms open for a hug, which she tentatively accepts. It's only a brief hug though, as she pulls away without wrapping you in her tail like she usually does.

"I'm going to get some sleep" She says. "Good... good luck out there"

Emi slithers off, just as Ilica comes out of the mess tent as well.

"Safe travels, man" Ilica says.

"Thanks" You say. "Take care of her for me, will you? I don't know what the problem is, and I don't really appreciate being left in the dark, but she looks like she could use a friend right now"

Ilica salutes you, gives you a hug, then heads off after Emi.

As you head to the Rook you write up a quick goodbye to Pip, complete with a cheese joke, and send it to her with Coral.

Coral's back by the time you reach the Rook, so you mount up and prepare to move...

You start up the engine, take a breath, and punch it.

As Pip said, there's a worn path that runs along the river, so you follow that away from camp. You can't quite go full speed due to the bumpy, less-than-straight nature of the surface, but you're keeping a good pace.

After a few hours you can see the border river, along with a good straight away you can use to pick up speed. So you push the engine, hit the boosters, create a solid ramp in front of you, and get airborne.

When you land, you come to a stop and look back across the river...

"Alright. That was pretty cool" You say to Coral, as you turn the Rook and start it back up. "And here I was worried about that jump..."

From there it's only another few hours to Locke, and you arrive there a little after sunrise. Given that you made such good time, you decide to stop for breakfast here before you move on.

You get to really push your speed on the straight, smooth roads between the main Lubrian cities. It gets to the point where you actually stop off in Bell's Run to buy goggles so you can shield your eyes from the wind.

With your eyes protected, you zip off towards Sherton. But as you're coming up on the gates, you see the first traveller you've come across all day.

It's a woman on a horse, who has pointy fox ears and 1...2... 3 4 5 6 7 8... 9 tails.

You slow down as you approach the horse, matching its speed as you come up beside it.

It's definitely Namaki. Had you been expecting to see her out on the roads you would've recognized her much sooner. She's wearing a more rugged version of her usual clothes underneath a heavy fur cloak, and her horse is a big one with a number of saddlebags.

"Lovely afternoon, isn't it?" She asks without even turning her head, not sounding at all surprised that you just pulled up.

"It is now" You reply.

Namaki laughs. "It is indeed" She says, finally turning to face you. "Surprised to see me?"

"Yeah" You say. "I didn't think you left Otuna... at all"

"Much has changed in the last few months" She says. "The city has some rudimentary defenses and a temporary guard, loaned to me by the lord of Bell's Run, while I'm on this little excursion of mine"

"Huh..." You say.

"And since I know you're going to ask, I'm on my way to visit my descendents here in Sherton" She says.

"Marybell's mom?" You ask.

She nods. "You should join me. I'm meeting them here for lunch, but I'm free for supper" She says, giving you a knowing smile. "No need to rush. You've plenty of time to spare. The storms off the Kazui peninsula have been particularly savage of late. I imagine a fleet trying to navigate around it would be delayed by... ooo... I'd say a day, maybe a day and a half"

You raise an eyebrow at her, and her smile widens ever so slightly.

"That sounds nice, I guess" You say. "So did you plan this trip knowing you'd run into me?"

Her smile widens a little bit more, and she turns back to face the road again. "I'd actually planned on running into you on the way out, but you got here much quicker than I'd expected" She says.

"Well I made pretty good time" You say. "So I take it you know the details of my little venture"

"The broad, sweeping ones, yes" She says. "I know about the southern fleet and your friends' flight from the isles, but beyond that I'm scant on specifics"

"That's basically it..." You say. "My plan is to challenge their leader to single combat, which I have the right to do because he has a sword that actually belongs to me"

"That you won up north" She says.

"Yes" You say. "You've been watching me, haven't you?"

"Keeping an eye on..." She says, her cheeks getting a little red.

You raise an eyebrow again.

"Alright, yes" She says. "I hope you can forgive me for snooping. I tend to worry for you quite a bit, so it's hard to resist peeking into what you're doing from time to time..."

"Nice to know you're looking out for me, but I hope you haven't seen too much..." You say.

"Peeking and peeping are two very different things" She says. "I have been respectful of your privacy"

"That's good" You say. "So you've seen Lyvia?"

"I have" She says. "Can't say I quite understand what she is, but I can appreciate a girl who shares my feelings about pants..."

You chuckle. "She actually had some interesting information, some of which might even pertain to you" You say. "But I'll tell you about that when we're off the road"

"And I will gladly listen" She says, as she swirls her hand and makes a little ball of pink light. "Can you see this?"

"Yeah" You say.

"Wonderful" She says. She then blows you a kiss, forming the pink ball into a little hard light kiss mark that floats over and touches your cheek. "I'm glad to see you"

"Yeah, I'm glad to see you too" You reply. "So you know Marybell's got a boyfriend now?"

"Derrick?" She asks.

You nod.

"If they marry, does that somehow make me a member of the royal family?" She asks. "I'm not sure I'd fit into all this..."

"You're askin' the wrong guy. I barely know where I fit in sometimes" You say.

She laughs at that. "Oh, you know exactly where you fit in, dear" She says.

"Yeah" You reply. "So that little kiss mark thing... did you practice that just for me?"

She says nothing, only giving you a knowing smile and spurring her horse on a bit faster. As she passes you, one of her tails comes out to brush your cheek.

...

"I'll take that as a yes" You say.

She also has a good idea of when and likely how she'll die I just assumed she was trying to have some fun after years of more or less being alone and worshiped in that town she protects.
I can see her being a tease and a flirt and a fun few nights here and there but idk about her being the end route

When you reach Sherton, you and Namaki scope out an inn.

"This one will do nicely" Namaki says.

"Hey, they they fixed it" You say.

Namaki turns to you with a curious expression.

You point up to the new-ish looking spot up on the second floor. "That's the spot where a chunk of tower flew into our room and almost killed us" You say. "If Emi hadn't been so quick, our little journey would have been a lot shorter..."

"She is much more powerful than she gives herself credit for" Namaki says as she dismounts her horse. "I imagine that if she had tried beating this southerner at his own game, we'd be in a completely different situation"

"You think she could beat him?" You ask.

She gives you a sly smile. "Let me ask you this: Do you think you could beat her without going all-out?"

"I...'m not sure" You say. "We were on pretty equal footing last time we sparred, but that was a long time ago. I do know that I'd have to be on my toes, though. One misstep and she'd have me all tied up in her tail..."

"I think she could beat you" She says. "You've come a long way, dear, and you've gotten quite strong. But you're far from being as good with your sword as she is with her staff, or adept with your own body as she is with hers, and though you can tap into an awesome amount of power you lack the skill to truly control it"

You... aren't quite sure how to react to that.

Namaki smiles and puts a hand on your cheek. "All things that will improve with time and with effort, but for now you're far from being a master" She says. "And when that day comes, well... gods have mercy on your enemies"

You stop and enjoy her touch for a moment, until something occurs to you... "Why are we at an inn, anyway? I thought we were meeting Meredith for lunch"

"For one thing, you weren't technically invited, and I never told them I'd be bringing a guest. I doubt they'd mind if you came, but it's somewhat rude to surprise a host like that" She says, idly twirling a lock of her hair. "And I figured you could use a nap. "Thought so" She says. "Come, we'll get a bed for you to rest in"

Namaki ties her horse up in front of the inn and you both head inside. Namaki offers to pay for the room, and you don't argue because you didn't actually bring that much coin with you.

"Is that horse yours?" You ask as you head up the stairs.

"It is, but hasn't been for very long" She says. "I purchased it from Bell's run so I'd have a means of transportation"

"Why not get a cart?" You ask.

"I'm an old fashion girl, dear" She says. "These carts are all... after my time, and I don't much feel like learning to drive one right now"

"That's fair. I don't know how to ride a horse either" You say. "How long ago did you learn?

"Riding? Oh... when I was younger than you" She says, stopping in front of your room. "My grandmother got me a lovely brown foal for my eighth birthday..."

"What did you name it?" You ask.

Her cheeks get a little red. "That's... not important" She says. "Aaaaanyway, here is your bed. I'll leave you to get some rest and come back once I've finished with Miss Meredith. Sound good?"

"Sounds good" You reply. "Good luck with Meredith"

She smiles and gives you a peck on the cheek before leaving you to your business.

You didn't bring your bag with you, so you don't have a change of clothes... and now that you think of it you haven't bathed in a while. Fortunately there's a bathroom here you can use, so you give yourself a quick wash and use one of the bathrobes in place of pajamas.

Unfortunately they don't have a tiny bathrobe for Coral, but she seems fine. You on the other hand might have to go complain to the front desk about their disturbing lack of adorable sprite attire... later. For now you think you could benefit from some sleep.

So you hop into bed and shut your eyes...

...

...

...

... and awaken later as someone quietly sits down on the bed. You open your eyes to see Namaki looking at you with a pleasant smile.

"That was much easier than it looked like it would be" She says.

"I'm a light sleeper lately" You say as you sit up and stretch. "How long were you out?"

"A few hours" She says. "It's around supper time now, if you'd care to join me"

"That was the plan" You say.

"Excellent" She replies. "Get dressed. Meredith gave me some wonderful recommendations"

"So how'd it go?" You ask, as you hop to your feet and head out of view in the bathroom to change.

"It was certainly interesting" She says. "And I learned some new things"

"Like what?" You ask.

"Like how this town is actually named after my son's wife" She says. "Her name was Sherilyn, and with my son she defended this town from the Lubrians"

You poke your head out to look at her. "From the Lubrians?" You ask.

She nods. "Their conquest of this region wasn't immediate. Even Otuna didn't come into their territory for quite some time"

"Wow" You say.

"But the Lubrians he fought then are not the same Lubrians who control the town now" She says. "The dragons of old would have scoffed at these... ridiculous towers"

"The dragons of now scoff at those towers" You say as you pull your shirt down and button it up. "But they tolerate it, since their extravagance keeps the construction workers busy"

Namaki laughs. "Ah yes, well... economics have never been my strong suit" She says. "I tend to let those things sort themselves out"

"Yeah, I'm still trying to figure it out myself" You say.

"You've got good help" She replies. "All set?"

You nod, and hook your arm over hers when she offers it. Then the two of you head out.

"So were they surprised?" You ask.

"Wouldn't you be?" She asks. "Of course, they were skeptical at first. But a showing of my power, and a bit of story telling was enough proof that I am who I say I am"

"I can understand that" You say. "I mean, under the same circumstances you'd be pretty skeptical too"

"What, you wouldn't take the fact that I'm 350 years old, your great-great-great-etc. grandmother, who's lady of Otuna, a town that maybe 20 outsiders have heard of on faith?" She asks.

...

You both get a good laugh off that.

Namaki takes the lead and brings you to a place that's relatively close to the inn... and it just so happens to be another place you recognize.

"Here too?" She asks.

"I came here with Stella my second time through this town" You say. "Nice place. Very good pasta"

"So what's got you out and about all of a sudden?" You ask. "I thought you were waiting for the danger to go away?"

"Well thanks in part to you this country is united once again, and you've made a pretty solid relationship with the north" She says. "Plus the south and the Legion are both occupied elsewhere, so I felt that I could spend some time outside"

"You're not worried?" You ask.

"As I said, I made a deal with the lord of Bell's Run, so it's not like the town is completely defenseless" She says.

"How is Lord Dustin anyways?" You ask.

"He seems to be doing well. I didn't actually speak to him. It was his daughter I dealt with" She says. "Sharp girl, that one. I may have to keep an eye on her..."

"Oh, Sophie?" You ask. "I guess her dad must be showing her the ropes"

"She is certainly a fast learner" She says. "But Lady Sophie is not the person you want to hear about"

"That is correct" You say.

"I take it you want to know more about the southern leader?" She asks.

You nod.

"There isn't much to say" She says. "Southerners respect strength. That's why they're lead by the best warriors rather than the savviest politickers or most knowledgeable scholars. Kameh looks at the situation here and sees that strength in the Legion"

"He's wrong" You say.

She smiles. "It's not me you have to convince of that" She says. "The legion's strength is fleeting, and left alone they'd run out of things to conquer and turn on each other"

You snort. "Unfortunately the rest of us would all be dead by then, so... yeah. Can't really leav them to their own devices"

"Well I would be fine, as would Otuna" She says. "But it's definitely better not to let the entire continent crumble into anarchy"

"So you beat some southerners in your time. Any tips on fighting them?" You ask.

"Most southern fighters like to end duels quickly, using fast, powerful, precise strikes" She says. "So you either need to be quicker on the offense, or quicker on the defense"

...

"And I was actually making a little illusory swordsman on the table to demonstrate, but I suppose I'll have to use my words..." She says.

She then spends the next few minutes giving you a run down of some of the different fighting styles that she experienced in her time. It really sounds like she knows her stuff...

"Now of course, those forms were prevalent more than 300 years ago. They might have changed between then and now. But as far as I know the southern warrior has not. Very enthusiastic and energetic, but they lack..." She trails off, dragging a finger down her lip. "... stamina"

You smirk. "Good to know. I've yet to meet an opponent who could out last me" You say, meeting her obvious innuendo with one of your own.

"Ooo, careful dear. Some people might take that as a challenge" She says.

You smile a little wider and lean forward. "Some people might be right" You say.

Before she can respond, the waiter returns with your food.

Once the waiter leaves, you take a breath.

"So tell me about Lyvia" She says, taking a sip of wine before continuing. "You mentioned that she had some information about me on the way in?"

"Oh yeah" You say. "So you probably know there's more to her than meets the eye at this point"

"That much was fairly clear, but I could never tell quite what it was" She says.

"She's actually from the time of Caian and Malieria" You say. "She was frozen in ice by Kukuri, and only thawed out recently"

"So did... being frozen make her powerful?" She asks.

"No, that's something else. She's actually not entirely human" You say. "Most women were... well, women before they were changed into their current forms. She was a massive, powerful monster"

"Go on..." She says.

"And she wasn't the only one either. There was also Titania, who went on to become the hero of light, and Vyula. No one really knows where Vyula went, but get this: She was a nine-tailed Kitsune with the power to create illusions, just like you" You say.

"That name... it sounds familiar, though I have no idea where I might have heard it before" She says. "You think I'm... a descendant of this Vyula?"

"It's possible" You say. "Not really sure how the power and its passing fits into all this, but it's likely you share some kind of relation to her"

"Interesting..." She says. "Perhaps I'll have to meet Lyvia myself some time"

"I'm sure she'd be interested" You say.

"What else can you tell me about her?" She asks.

"Well... she's constantly annoyed by how small she is... she hates pants with a passion..." You say.

"We have that in common" Namaki says. "Skirts and robes for me. I've never liked pants"

You tilt your head and peek under the table. Sure enough, Namaki is wearing a skirt. "I didn't actually notice that" You say. "Isn't riding in a skirt awkward?"

"The split goes pretty far up the side, so one leg is pretty much bare" She says, with a sly smile. "And you did notice... just not the skirt"

You feel your cheeks heat up, as Namaki laughs.

"So she's small, and hates pants..." she says.

"And she's about as close to being my daughter as I can get without adopting her" You say. "Her handmaidens were kinda... bad, so I took over as her caretaker"

"Handmaidens?" She asks.

"Yeah. They're the daughters of some Dunere who got the position when the queen was still frozen, and it was still just a ceremonial deal" You say. "When Lyvia thawed they had, and still have no idea how to deal with her"

"And you do?" She asks.

"It's pretty simple really. Just let her do her own thing, but don't let her go out in public without clothes" You say. "That last part is... not as easy as it sounds"

"A bit of an exhibitionist?" She asks.

"No... pants are just her most hated article of clothing. She has a certain disdain for the rest of them too" You say. "Stems from the fact that she never wore clothes as a monster, so she finds them uncomfortable now"

"And how did you convince her to dress up every day?" She asks.

"That part was easy. I just told her she could use impressive clothing to mimic at least some of her former splendor" You say. "She still doesn't like it, but she sees the point now"

Namaki giggles. "Ah, to be young again" She says. "You should introduce her to some of the softer, warmer fabrics. Cut right it can feel even better than being naked... especially in this weather..."

"She also doesn't get cold at all, which just made things harder" You say.

"Oh? Is that something she can pass on to others? I could use a skill like that..." She says. "I've been huddled by the fireplace in my warmest robes almost all winter..."

You tilt your head. "It hasn't been that cold..." You say.

"For your average person, no. But I am... hmmm... kind of a wimp when it comes to the cold..." She says. "I have my ideal temperatures. Anything above or below and I'm completely useless, unless there's something important to do"

"I'd sympathize, but I don't get hot or cold. So..." You trail off.

"Well I hope you're willing to spread some of that around. Tonight's supposed to be quite chilly" She says.

"We did get one room..." You say.

"That was just for your nap" She says. "I was actually thinking we'd continue on to Contique after this and spend the night there"

"You aren't going back to Otuna?" You ask.

She seems surprised. "Not just yet. I'd planned to accompany you to Leon... which I should have mentioned earlier..." She says. "If that's alright with you"

"Your horse would slow me down a bit too much..." You say.

"Oh, I left the horse with Meredith" She says.

"Oh... well then..."

"I would be happy to have you along" You say.

"That's good because I wasn't about to take no for an answer" She says. "What say we finish up here so we can get going, huh?"

"Sounds good to me" You reply.

You both finish eating, sharing little bits of conversation throughout. Then you pay for dinner, and the two of you head back to the inn to pick up the Rook.

"So I sit back here?" She asks.

"Yep" You say. "Just like that, now hold on tight"

Namaki does just that as you start moving, hugging you from behind with her arms and her tails. "Doesn't leave much personal space, does it?" She asks.

"It's worth it, especially if you don't mind the closeness" You say.

You keep a steady pace through the streets of Sherton, holding it steady as you pass through the east gate...

"How fast should I go?" You ask.

"I'm not sure" She says. "Just bring it up slowly. If I start to squeeze you'll know you're going too fast"

You consider just maxing it out right now, but then you remember how well that went with Cheska...

"Wait! Stop. I forgot something" She says.

"What?" You ask.

"My bags" She says. "I left them with my horse..."

"Are they important?" You ask.

In response, she pinches your cheek.

"Alright... back to Meredith's place..." You say.

You turn around and head back into the city, where Namaki pays a quick visit to Meredith to grab the bags from her horse. Thankfully they hang off the Rook the same way they hung off her horse, so they aren't in the way. Hanging on the one side she has a pair of bags, and on the other there's a rolled up blanket that feels like it has something solid in it.

"There. Now we can go" She says, giving you a peck on the cheek as she mounts back up.

"What's in there that's so important?" You ask.

"You'll see" She says, as she wraps her arms and tails around you once more. "Shall we?"

"Sure you're not forgetting anything else?" You ask.

"Yes, but it's something I left back in Otuna and that's a bit far to backtrack..." She says.

"Alright then" You say as you wheel the Rook around and head back to the gate.

>1/2

This time when you reach the gate, you start speeding up. Namaki doesn't flinch, even as you start to max it out...

You hear her say something, but you can't hear her over the wind. If only there was... wait no, you've got something.

You channel Soul through the wind emblem to make a wind screen a little ways in front of the Rook, blocking the wind so you can both hear and see fine... which makes you kinda mad because you just bought a pair of goggles.

"What was that?" You ask.

"I said it's a smooth ride" She says. "Did you block out the wind just so we could talk?"

"Makes it easier to keep my eyes open too, but yes" You say. "And you can thank these nice Lubrian roads for the smooth ride. On anything less this thing gets pretty bumpy"

"A little bumpy is fine every now and then" She says, tickling your chin with one of her tails.

...

Focus on the road, Yuu. Any thoughts you might have can wait until you get to Contique...

...

It's a long ride, or at least it feels like one. Namaki is worse than Cheska when it comes to the teasing, especially because she has 8 more limbs to work with. The whole her two hands and nine tails are testing your focus...

By the time you reach Contique it's getting dark. You don't know this place as well as Sherton, but you have a vague idea of where to find treveler's lodgings. After a few minutes of searching you find a place that looks nice enough for a prince and a lady, and pull the Rook up in front.

While you grab Namaki's things, she goes and gets a room.

"Alright, we're all set" She says. "Come on, we're up on the top floor"

You nod and follow along as she leads you up the stairs and into your room. You feel almost dazed, the heat of an entire trip spent getting teased leaving you quite pent up...

Once you're inside she turns towards you, rubbing the back of her neck and grinding a foot into the floor. "And... sorry about all the teasing..." She says. "I just... can't help myself sometimes"

You take a breath, and-

-let it out. Then you lock eyes with Namaki, and shut the door.

"You have five seconds to say no" You say as you place her bags on a table by the door. "I've got 4 hours of pent up frustration from your constant teasing to blow off, and I'd just like to give you a moment to opt out if you're not feeling up for it"

Namaki smiles and toys with the sash keeping her robe together. "Baby, if I didn't want you taking it out on me I wouldn't have spent 4 hours teasing you" She says.

That sounded like a pretty definitive 'yes' to you.

You step in and put your hands on her waist. She leans forward for a kiss. You lift her up over your head and carry her to the bed, where you toss her down like a ragdoll and throw yourself on top of her before she's even finished bouncing.

With as much force as you feel comfortable using, you pin her arms to the bed and press your lips into hers, slamming your tongue into her mouth like a battering ram before moving down her neck.

"Oh dear, what have I awakened?" She asks in a breathy tone.

You say nothing, only smiling at her as you thrust your hips into hers.

"Oh! my... people usually ditch their clothes before this point, baby" She says.

You lay on the bed next to Namaki, both of you naked and panting.

"I've been alive for 348 years, and married for about 50 of those... I have never been lifted up like that, or even tried a few of those things" She says. "Kudos"

"I did warn you" You say.

"I figured I was in for 'a little bumpy', not... that" She says.

You roll over to face her, and pull her towards you. "Consider that next time you decide to tease the hell out of me" You say.

"You might want to rethink that statement" She says.

"I definitely don't" You reply.

She lets out a low laugh, and snuggles up with you. "I could use a snack after that" She says. "This place does room service, if you feel like staying up a bit..."

"Sounds good to me" You say.

"Good" She says, patting your chest as she sits up, she makes sure her tails brush all the way along your body as she swings her legs off the bed and stands up. "Now where did my robe end up?"

"Uhh... I think I tossed it over there somewhere" You say. "You look, I'll untie the sash from the bed post"

She smiles and sashays over to where you pointed, making a point to bend down and keep her tails out of the way to give you a view as she looks around.

With that show happening, it takes a second to remember that you were supposed to be doing something. It takes some work to get her sash untied, especially with the weird knot you made in the heat of the moment.

But you have it undone by the time she finds her robe, and she quickly gets herself decent enough to leave the room.

While she's gone you throw your pants back on. Thankfully the mess you made didn't get through to them, but you don't think you'll be putting your underwear back on anytime soon...

When Namaki comes back, she sits with you on the bed and puts a little box of simple little pastry things in your lap.

"This was all they had, but they're pretty good" She says.

You pull one out and pop it in your mouth. It's sweet, and kinda crunchy. Nothing special, but still good.

Once again she snuggles up next to you, resting her head on your shoulder. You bring a hand around behind her head to scratch her ear, and relax.

"I'm sensing a question" She says.

"Yeah... It's not super important, but-"

"-you've really never tried some of those things?" You ask. "I mean... past the first few bits I thought it was all pretty basic stuff"

"Well for one, the 'first few bits'? You mean the part where you made us both climax while fully clothed through sheer determination?" She asks. "And yes, some of that was new to me... we may have been more open about sex when I was young, but apparently we were also quite tame"

"Go on" You say.

"I've never been licked like that" She says. "Nor have I been hoisted into so many different positions in one go, though that might just be because I've never taken someone as strong as you are to bed..."

"And how were you expecting this to go?" You say, moving your hand down under her cheekbone to rub the other sensitive spot on her head.

"Not like that" She says. "I was expecting more slow, gentle romance and less 'toss me like a ragdoll and fuck my brains out'..."

"I didn't hear you saying stop" You say.

"And I wasn't about to tell you to" She says. "I just... a little bit of the slow, romantic loving would have been appreciated"

You smile and kiss her head. "There's still some time" You say.

"You've worn me out a bit too much for that" She says, setting the little box aside and shifting herself so she can lay down, while wordlessly inviting you to join her. "But..."

"But...?" You ask, as you shift yourself down with her and pull her in close.

"But it would make for a most pleasant awakening" She says. "E-especially that one thing... with the tongue..."

You smile and kiss her. "I'll see you in the morning then" You say.

Namaki takes a breath and gets comfy. "Ooo, look at you gettin' me all excited to be woken up" She says. "Usually it's my least favourite part of the day"

"Depends on your company, I suppose" You say.

That's all for tonight!

As always I'll be sticking around for question/suggestion time.

I feel like we are trampling mud on our enemy's oncoming duel with us with these distractions. He's probably been waiting for this for weeks.
>>
Who else has the MC slept with?
>>

Madelaine. One of our old group members who similarly has her memory wiped about how she came to be in the world. She and the MC found common ground in sexual frustration and being convenient.

For all the one wife stuff we've been told, the other characters seem remarkably okay with it happening a few times too. I think we all presumed before Madeline that sex would only occur at route lock. Certainly what happened with Derrick.

>>2808176
I figured Kameh has probably been holding on to Kou's sword, and Kou probably told him that he was acting on behalf of a man much stronger than he was that was the prince of Lubars. Kou was supposed to be a skilled warrior from the south, and he had the guts to fight this guy who was taking everyone down, so I'm presuming that had some impact. Kameh has probably been meditating in a sealed room with one candle the whole time Namaki was getting her tails fluffed.

>There are countless other versions of Yuu, with countless different routes pursued
Truth is, Yuu was always going to have a harem. Him and his alternate selves are out there satisfying what is essentially an infinite amount of cute girls.
We don't talk about the timelines in which he ends up with dudes, though. Those ones are just weird. The men don't even have fluffy tails, what were those Yuus thinking?
>>
>>2809099
When did derrick route lock? I feel like i missed something. One day he was suddenly riding her around.
Its a shame i was hoping for Derrick/Pip or Derrick/Madelaine
>>
>>2809149
I kind of wonder how much those timelines affect what Yuu is doing with girls now. Fast one had tons of random demon girls. Mageblade one could be even more significant as the implication I read was that he probably had sex with a lot of girls we know.

>>2809177
I'm not sure either, and maybe it's not a lock. I sort of feel though like it's just going to stay the way it is. My preference was always Madelaine for Derrick. I never really considered her a potential love interest for Yuu until I think after Howling Tower.
>>
>>2809197
I mean she'd be top tier in any other quest but shes got some tough competition and I prefer her as a fembro, plus the allure of teasing Derrick for being a filthy human loving degenate is too strong!
>>
>>2799221
Huh, I remember seeing the first thread of this ages ago and hoping it'd take off. Nice going guys.
>>
>>2809177
I remember Yuu catching them in a moment where Marybell was teaching Derrick archery or something and then walking away quietly after she saw him. I wonder how much of an impact that had into pushing Derrick into her route.

On the topic of waifus, I wonder how the other contenders would react after the route lock. I'm okay with either Namaki or Cheska winning, but I fear out of all the potential losers Cheska would take it the hardest.
>>
>>2809791
I feel like the ones who would take it the hardest would be people like me who wanted to go the Stella route. Then again it's fucking clear to see that smiley is all his years of qming still fucking sucks at this type of thing and has clear biased.

You awaken and look around. The sun's not quite up yet, and you feel spectacularly warm and comfy...

The source of this feeling is easy to locate. It's the Kitsune sleeping beside you. Her head is resting on your chest, and there isn't an inch of you that you can see through the blanket of her tails.

Memories of the previous night come flooding back, making every sensation coming from the woman next to you much more erotic. From the feeling of her hand on your shoulder, her tails across your stomach and legs, her soft breath over your chest, the smell of her hair... it all comes together, making you want to to anything but lay still.

Suddenly an idea comes to you, and you smile. "Well she did want me to wake her..." You say, as you roll her onto her back. "And she was very specific as to how..."

>Same bin. Scroll past the arrows for this scene. This section isn't done yet, but I'll put it up later.

You sit behind Namaki and brush her tails as they come back to you. One of the things she brought with her was her dryer and her brush. Which is good, because once she's done with her tails she can dry both of your underwear off as well...

Once her tails are all brushed, she shakes them off and you move up to sit next to her.

"How are they looking?" You ask.

"Clean" She replies. "Which is good for you. I don't think you'd've wanted to duel in these"

"Yeah I wasn't too keen on going into combat with stains like that..." You say.

She smiles and hands you your now dry underwear so you can get dressed.

"So..." She says. "Are you satisfied?"

You nod. "If we were interviewing for the position of my bedwarmer, you passed with flying colours" You say, giving her a peck on the cheek.

Namaki pouts. "You mean we weren't...?" She asks. "I used all my best move for nothing?"

"Are bedwarmers a thing?" You ask, as you put your shirt back on.

"They've fallen out of style since my time, but I've heard of a few monarchs, royals and lords who still do these sorts of things" She says. "It was a sort of job back then though. Young, unmarried noblemen would have a girl to share their bed, give them hands on lessons about sex, and travel with them wherever they went"

"Sounds like a decent gig" You say.

"Depended on the nobleman. Some were known to be cruel, some were timid, some denounced the tradition out of piety or whatever... and of course there were some who needed little in the way of teaching..." She says, with a very pointed look at you. "Now the position no longer exists, and strapping young princes like yourself must work to find women, rather than have a woman who works for him"

"Oh, woe is me" You say.

"Yes, I know. Life is so hard" She says, reaching up to pinch your cheek. "I'm glad to hear I passed, though. Even if I couldn't warm your current sleeping arrangement"

"Why's that?" You ask.

"You share a tent" She says. "And I don't think your mouse friend is the type who'd want us fucking while she's trying to sleep"

You raise an eyebrow. "There's a type of person who does?" You ask.

"Yes, but they're not the kind of person you really want around when you make love" She says as she pulls her panties up into place with a 'snap'. "Unless you like being watched... I prefer not to have an audience though"

"Yeah, it sounds weird" You say.

Namaki picks up her robe and pulls her arms through the sleeves, but when she goes to close it you stop her.

"Hang on" You say.

"What?" She asks. "Dear we don't have time for-"

"Not that. Just give me a second, there's something I wanted to do earlier..." You say.

She breathes in and looks for a retort, but after a moment she just shrugs and crosses her arms. "Alright, but be quick" She says.

You nod, then press her breasts together and stick your face in there. It's just as soft as you thought it'd be. After a few seconds your curiousity is satisfied, and you step back. "There. Now you're good"

Namaki closes her eyes and starts laughing. "That's what you wanted to do?" She asks.

"Yes" You reply.

She leans in and kisses you as she closes her robe and ties off her sash. "You are adorable, has anyone ever told you that?" She asks.

"Once or twice, I'm sure" You reply.

It takes Namaki a few seconds to work her tails through the hole in the back of her robe, and then she's set to go.

"Now come on. We'll grab a quick breakfast and get on the road" She says.

"Good plan"

>1/2
>>
You grab a simple breakfast from the inn's kitchen, and the two of you head back to the Rook. Once there you put Namaki's bags back on, mount up, and head off.

The way to Leon passes a few smaller towns that you've never been to since the road just goes right by them. One day when you have the time you might pay them a visit. The countryside itself is nice enough to warrant spending some time out here. Who knows what you'll find in those little towns?

Unfortunately you don't have the time to stop right now, so you speed on past them like you have every other time.

It's much easier to focus this time as well, since Namaki isn't making a point of rubbing you everywhere. So the trip goes quickly, and it no time at all you're zipping across the bridge to the Dragon's Gate.

The automata at the entrance have you as one of their 'sealed city' exceptions, and open the gate for you. They don't even question Namaki's presence, since they were programmed not to care who you're arriving with so long as it isn't an entire army of hostiles.

Leon is quiet for this time of day, which likely means most of the citizens have found shelter... which is especially nice as it keeps the roads nice and clear all the way to the Palace.

The Royal Guard let you in there, and you vouch for Namaki. They tell you where to find the commander of the city's defense, and you head to the meeting room.

Along to way you spot Daria with Valerie. Daria is tossing Valerie up into the air and catching her. The little slime giggles like crazy.

"Daria!" You call out.

Daria turns to you and smiles, missing her catch and dropping Valerie on the ground. "Yuu! You came!" She says as she runs up and hugs you.

You stop, pointing to the green blob that is your sister on the floor.

"Oh, don't worry about her. This is actually her favourite game" Daria says, bending over the blob with a smile. "Right Val?"

A little hand pops out of the blob, then a head, then the head forms a face with a huge smile, then some weird ripples happen behind the mouth and she starts laughing again as the rest of her reforms.

"Is that normal?" You ask.

"Slimes need to learn how to keep their form and reform quickly" Daria says. "The squish game is a good way to do that"

When Valerie reforms, Daria tosses her up again and lets her splat on the ground as she turns back to you. "Who's this?" She asks.

"Oh, sorry. This is Lady Namaki, from Otuna" You say. "She came to... help?"

Namaki smiles and offers Daria her hand. "I came to help. You must be Princess Daria" She says.

Daria smiles and gives Namaki a hearty handshake. "Nice to meetcha!" She says. "You must be looking for the defense commander, right? I can take you to him"

Once Valerie reforms, you pick her up and get going. Namaki and Daria start talking to each other about something else, so you occupy your attention with Valerie...

"Hey sis. Remember me?" You ask, poking her in the little bump you think is her nose.

...

How do slimes smell any way?

"Aww, you do remember!" You say. "Now can I have my hand back?"

Valerie looks angry and waves her arms around as bubbles start to come out around your hand.

"I guess that's a no... I'll need it back before the duel though, unless you want to hold the sword for me" You say, before turning to Daria. "So when did you guys hear about this attack?"

"Late last night" She says. "We got a sprite from a lighthouse down south, and then another one from Auntea"

You chuckle at the name. You and Daria are quite possibly the only people Altea tolerates calling her anything but her title. You imagine that Val will be on that list soon as well, and there may be some others you haven't heard...

"So you're here to... do what again? She wasn't clear on the details" She says.

"I'm here to challenge their leader to single combat and beat him up, then I'm headed straight back" You say.

"You aren't staying?" Daria asks.

"Maybe for one night... if I'm not needed on the front" You say.

Daria gets a huge smile on her face.

"Hold the smiles, I said maybe. Maaaaybe-"

She jumps in and gives you a big hug anyway, excitedly hopping up and down as she does.

"You don't need those losers... and besides, someone has to run things here" You say.

"Dad runs things... I just sit around" She says.

"What about Val? She doesn't count?" You ask.

"Val is a baby" She replies.

Val takes offense to that, bubbling angrily with your hand still stuck in her head.

...

"Can she understand us, or is she just really mad?" You ask.

"Can I come with you to Lutain? Pleeeeeaaaase?" She asks.

"I'm... not really in a position to okay that" You say. "Ask the King, and ask the Comomder. If they say yes, then you can go"

Daria smiles. "Alright! I'll go ask right now!" She says, before taking flight and soaring away.

"Is she always like this?" Namaki asks.

"Yes" You reply. "She's a bit... childish, I know"

"She needs proper tutelage, and actual role models she can spend time with" Namaki says. "Your mother is a good example, but I don't think she sees her all that often... perhaps some time out of this Palace could do her some good"

"She is the crown princess though... and Lutain is dangerous" You say.

"Lutain is currently the most well defended city on the planet" She replies. "And... you do remember why you came here, don't you?"

"You... have a point" You say. "How do we get her there, though? There's no guarantee she could get safe passage"

"Nonsense. One of the world's most powerful warriors, with the world's fastest transport is here" She says. "I could find my own way to Sherton"

"But-"

"But that girl is going to be queen, and if she does not learn how to rule it will be a disaster" She says. "She could take lessons with you. A lord and a princess, both learning their craft"

...

"You already know what's going to happen, don't you?" You ask.

"I have seen the possibilities, yes" She says. "But her lack of experience is fact, not fortune"

You sigh. "We'll see what Altea has to say. If she sees things your way... maybe" You say. "For now let's just make sure the country keeps its capital"

When you reach the meeting room, you see a map of the city and surrounding area sprawled out on the table. There's only one other person here, and it's one you recognize...

"Leah?" You ask. "You're the defense commander?"

"Yup" She replies with a polite bow. "Glad to see you, my prince. Even more glad that you made it in time"

"I'm fast" You say, deciding to skip the pleasantries and personal questions and get right to business. "What's the situation?"

Leah gives you the rundown on where the city's scant defense forces are. They're mostly focused on the harbor, which is the only way into Leon by sea.

You nod as you look it over. The actual harbour is outside the city walls, down a small natural cliff. The only ways up to the city are a pair of stairways and several elevators, all of which have been shut off. Climbing the cliff would be almost impossible, as the entire face was smoothed and worked hundreds of years ago.

"So we've got all of our automatons on the stairs, and all of our weapons pointed at the harbor... but we don't have the people to man all the weapons, and the automatons won't last very long. If they attack, they'll win.

You pat Leah on the shoulder. "That's what I'm here for" You say, pointing to one of the long docks. "That looks like a pretty good spot for a duel, wouldn't you say Val?"

...

Val is asleep.

"Well I hope you're as good as they've been saying now" Leah says. "We should get moving. Lookouts report that they'll be arriving within the hour"

"I should take this one back to the Princess" You say.

"Go on. The Lady and I will meet you at the entrance" Namaki says, putting a hand on Leah's back and leading her out of the room. "You are Lady Leah Rynia, correct?"

"Uhh... yes? Have we met?" Leah asks

You leave them to their business and let Coral lead you to Daria. You find her with her father, talking about... exactly what she said she'd be talking about.

"Please papa?" She asks. "I promise I'll stay safe!"

King Dein notices you entering the room, and frowns. "Yuu, what have you been telling her?" He asks.

"Don't look at me. I was against this" You say.

"I hate to do this, Your Grace... but I can see some merit in the idea" You say.

Daria gets her usual huge, gleeful smile. To his credit the King tries very hard to hide his disappointment.

"Explain" He says.

"2 things: First, Leon is not as safe as it usually is right now. Lutain has the entire coalition defensive force guarding it, and the Legion is not poised to hit it again. If we can't persuade the southerners to stay away, Leon is still an easy target" You say. "Second is that she needs to learn how to be a queen, and there are people there who can teach her some of the things she'll need to know"

Dein sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose. "Will she truly be safe? I want more than walls. She will need guarding" He says.

"I'll set my own bodyguard to watch over her" You say. "Sh is the last of the Akotzal order, an arachnid named Kanzka-"

"Yes master?" Kanzka asks, scring the absolute hell out of you.

You turn around to see her poking her head through the doorway.

...

"Do... how did you get here?" You ask.

"Do I want to know what that means?" You ask.

"I have set traps in certain places. Nothing to worry about, though, Your Grace. They will all be disabled before I leave" She says.

"Traps... in the Palace?!" Dein asks.

Kanzka looks confused. "No... at the docks" She says, looking to you. "Is the duel to take place here now?"

"No, it'll be at the docks" You say.

Kanzka nods.

"How did you get in here?" Dein asks.

"There is a small discrepancy in the working of the floors in basement storage room 5" She says. "I exploited it to enter the palace, and fixed it so others could not use it"

"You're a stone worker?" You ask.

"I am" She replies.

"You're certain she is on our side?" Dein asks.

"Her loyalty has been solid so far" You say.

Dein lets out an exasperated sigh. "Alright. Yuu has a point, and if Commander Altea has no objections you may accompany him back to Lutain" He says. "But this is not a vacation. You're going there to be kept safe, and to learn. Understood?"

Daria nods.

"Cool" You say. "Now, you mind taking the little blob for me? I can't really fight with a baby on my hand"

Daria nods again, and gives you a hand pulling Val off...

You find Namaki and Leah outside talking about something. They're both standing by the Rook, though Leah seems to have a cart that looks a lot like it.

"Oh, there he is" Namaki says with a sly smile. "We were just talking about you"

"Nothing bad I hope" You say. "What's this?"

"This is the new vehicle design for the city watch" Leah says. "After you and Pip ran circles around us, we tasked some of the scholars at the archive to build something similar"

"It looks nice" You say.

"It's about as fast as the Rook, but only because it's powered by a device instead of an engine" She says. "So it won't work outside the city... that said, it's perfect for getting around"

"Glad my antics have inspired some innovation" You say.

"Can anyone use these?" Namaki asks.

"Well... yeah" Leah says.

"May I?" She asks, seemingly looking to both of you for permission.

"Give it a whirl, just don't take too long" You say

Namaki smiles and goes over to the new vehicle. Leah gives her a quick rundown of the controls, which are very similar to the Rook's.

Leah rides with her, making sure she's got the hang of things, leaving you alone on the Rook.

You figure you'll stick next to them rather than speeding off. Knowing Namaki she might take that as a challenge and try to catch up which could end badly. Still, she keeps a good pace so you're at the harbour in no time.

"That was exhilarating" Namaki says.

"It's more fun on the open road, where you can really let the engine rip" You say. "Maybe some day there'll be a mana engine small enough for these"

Namaki talks to Leah about possibly procuring one of these prototypes for her to use back in Otuna, while you head over to the cliffside.

In the distance you can see the southern fleet. It's a lot of ships. Easily twice what their airfleet has, and possibly more than the coalition airfleet.

"Feeling apprehensive?" Namaki asks.

"No, just looking" You say. "It's quite the fleet"

"The southerners are the only people who still keep a large navy these days" Leah says. "When our major wars are all along land borders, there just isn't much point..."

"Do we have any ships?" You ask.

"None within range to help us" Leah says. "They're mostly in the lakes to the north west"

"Not that a few ships would do us a whole lot of good..." You say. "Let's head down and get ready. They're almost here"

Namaki opts to stay up by the carts for a bit while you and Leah walk down past the stairways lined with automatons. The machines step to the side as you pass them, each with the same rigid movements.

"How is the reconstruction coming anyway?" You ask.

"We're at about a third of our original strength" She replies. "We'd be better off now, but a portion of the machinery scholars have been tasked with vehicle work, and a lot of the royal guard has gone off to Lutain"

"Not sure why. There aren't that many of them and they haven't done much so far" You say.

"Yes, and they won't get the chance either. We're recalling all of them from the front. They belong here, and I told them it was stupid to leave the capital so lightly defended" She says with a sigh. "But that's my problem. How are things on the front? I hear you're a lord now"

"I was the only person both sides of the coalition could agree to give the honour to" You say.

"Sounds like relations have been pretty solid recently" She says.

"Only recently, and that took a lot of work" You say. "You wouldn't know it now, but before they'd spent some time fighting together they were just as ready to fight each other as they were the legion"

"Glad to hear that's passed. Having to hear about the alliance turning on itself would have the entire city up in arms..." She says. "We've got enough problems when the citizens are being peaceful..."

"You mentioned yo uhad the scholars working on vehicles... are there others, aside from the one upstairs?" You ask.

"Oh, we've got a bunch" She says. "That one is the only one that's really meant for people. The rest are bigger and bulkier, meant for getting automatons from place to place"

"They do walk pretty slow" You say.

"Yeah that's the problem we're lookin' to solve" She says. "Most promising one so far is a simple cart that carries 15 of them and a driver. Enough for a defensive line across Leon's largest street, and it can carry extra little trailers with 15 more if you need to double up"

"Useful. Which one is your favorite so far?" You ask.

"The airship. Carries 15 again, all hanging from the bottom. It swoops in and drops them super fast" She says. "Only problem is that the autos have trouble sticking the landing, and teaching them has been a hassle..."

"Keep at that. I imagine the intimidation factor of suddenly having a small force dropped on you would make most people second guess whatever they were doing" You say.

Leah chuckles. "Only if we can get past that first hurdle. I don't think seeing an airship drop off a disorganized pile of clumsy metal would frighten most people" She says.

"Maybe if you dropped them right on top of people" You say.

"Yeah, but then why use automatons at all?" She asks. "We could just drop something heavy and be done with it"

"There's some merit to that" You say as you arrive down at the docks. "But that's a 'later' problem"

You kinda figured you'd be able to see Kanzka's traps when you got down here, but they're nowhere to be found other than the slight outline of one of her hidey-holes. So she either took them down, or she's very good at covering her tracks.

"Kanzka?" You call out.

"Yes master?" Kanzka replies, popping her head out of the cliff wall behind you.

Leah jumps a good 5 feet in the air, even letting out a sort of 'surprised cat' noise. "Eternal's beard, where in the hell did you come from?" She asks, so clearly on guard that you can see the her hair standing on edge.

"Leah, this is Kanzka. She's my bodyguard" You say.

Leah points firmly at the wall. "That is worked stone!" She says.

"I am a stone worker" Kanzka says. "Did you need something, master?"

"I'm having trouble spotting these traps of yours" You say.

"They are beneath the surface" Kanzka says. "I have unworked several select patches of stone so I might mold them more easily"

"Like what?" You ask

Kanzka points out a few of her traps. She's set up a few spots that'll dump anyone on them into the water, a few that will trap their feet...

You still can't see them, even now that she's pointed them out. But then it's just the difference between worked and unworked stone. Invisible even to your eyes, and only useful to someone who knows where it is.

Your curiosity satisfied, Kanzka retreats back into her little hole in the wall. You can see some of the southerners loading onto smaller transport boats, so it won't be long before they arrive.

Taking a breath, you choose to pass that time centering yourself for the upcoming conflict...

>1/2

It's a small party that lands first. 5 warriors, all lightly armored and armed with the traditional southern curved blade.

They have you outnumbered, but the dock keeps them nice and grouped up.

While you've been getting your head focused, you pulled as much soul as you can in towards you. So long as you don't focus it on a sinle point for use, it's invisible. But it's all close enough that you could weaponize it at a moment's notice, and based on what Pip told you a moment could make all the difference.

The warriors stand across the dock from you, relaxed in posture but obviously ready...

"Welcome to Leon, travelers" You say. "What brings you and your mass of friends to our door today?"

The lead steps forward. "I am Kameh. My friends and I are here to take this city" He says. "Surrender now, and return what belongs to me, or perish"

"What a coincidence. I am Yuu Gallant, and you have something that belongs to me as well" You say. "Leon is well defended. You can leave now as men your ships, or you can leave later as ashes scattered on the wind"

"A very long, treacherous leak, I know" Kameh says. "I want my wife back, Yuu Gallant"

"Everybody wants somebody" You say. "I know finding a girl can be hard sometimes, but-"

"Emi Myuashi" Kameh says. "My wife. Where. Is. She?"

"First of all, super rude. Second of all, Emi is no one's wife" You say.

"She is mine. Married 2 weeks ago and she's already betrayed me" He says. "Did she not tell you?"

"You talk a lot for someone known for fighting" You say.

"Oh... she didn't. Perhaps she hoped you'd never find out" He says. "Now where is she?"

You smirk. "Hate to say this, but I think I might've forgotten her" You say. "Tell you what. You get my sword, I'll get Emi, and then we can settle this like men"

"I only need to stop you" You say, drawing and activating your mageblade. "You've got to make a choice: either accept my challenge and fight me like a man, decline and die like fodder, or go home and rethink your allegiances"

"I'll not accept a challenge from someone who wields the weapon of a peasant" He says.

"So if he had a sword it would be fine?" Namaki asks, as she comes up and puts a hand on your shoulder. "I happen to have one with me that he could use... unless you'd rather I fight you"

You turn, expecting to see her waving an empty hand with an illusory blade... but there's an actual sword there. It's the one you saw in her collection last time you were at her house.

Kameh's eyes go wide with recognition. "Where did you get that?" He asks.

Kameh's jaw clenches, and you can hear the men behind him murmuring.

"I will accept" He says. "Starting now!"

He swings his sword, releasing a blade of wind. It's difficult to see even for you. An average person might be caught off guard.

With the sheer amount of soul in the air, a defensive wave of force manifests with very little effort at all.

You hold out your hand. Once again the soul is quick to charge.

"Wait! If you kill me she'll never-"

The energy unleashes as a massive beam. 2 of the 4 people who arrived at the docks with Kameh are quick enough to get the hell out of the way. Kameh and the 2 others aren't.

When the beam subsides, all that's left is twisted armor and a few ruined blades.

"Maybe I could have let him finish that sentence..." You say. "Kanzka, can you get the other 2 out of the water for me?"

Platforms come up underneath the two southerners, forcing them to the surface. Both of them could swim just fine, but you didn't think they'd be coming up to risk getting dusted and you need them to hear what you have to say...

"Now, you two" You say. "Go back to your ships, go home, recall your forces in Riverhold, and end the blockade on Ebiha Island"

They're both quick to agree.

"Oh, and the next time someone down there gets the bright idea to pull on the dragon's tail..." You say, stepping up, grabbing Kameh's twisted sword, and tossing it to the nearest southerner. "Show them this"

"I'd been gathering the energy since we got down here" You say. "It was all sitting around, waiting to be used... but... do you know what he was trying to say?"

"Before you disintegrated him?" Leah asks. "Not a clue"

"Well, he was clearly speaking of Lady Myuashi" Namaki says. "Who, if he was telling the truth, is his wife. Which means that she is now in exile"

"She's... what?" You ask.

"In exile. She did betray him. The fact that she was doing the right thing does little to change that" Namaki says. "Her betrayal resulted in his death, however roundabout it might have been. So now she is forbidden to return"

"That's... that's insane!" You say.

"You speak of a culture that still decides leadership based on who can swing a sword better than everyone else" She replies. "The tradition has not changed since I was last there"

To be fair, I MAY have misunderstood something. If you don't mind, someone correct any misunderstandings in the following things that I took away from earlier conversations:

Kameh beat up everyone in Ebiha who could be called a ruler, taking their swords and, thus, their status.

In doing so, he united essentially all of the islands under his rule.

When you take someone's sword, you get to control who/what they controlled.

We took his sword, essentially granting us control over everything he ruled - in this case, essentially all of Ebiha

Therefore, praise Yuu, emperor of Ebiha.

>>
>>2814734
Oh, there's ABSOLUTELY another shoe casting a shadow overhead, but I just wanted to make sure the basic premise wasn't due to a misunderstanding on my part.

...and I just realized, we actually DID what we told Emi we'd do way earlier in the quest, taking everyone's swords to conquer the islands...just ended up being a much simpler process compared than expected.
>>
>>2814729
There are some slight hindrances due to Yuu's status as an outsider. Having a sword lets you challenge someone, but the people whose swords you now technically own would be reluctant to accept the leadership of a foreigner. If you can convince them that you're worthy preferably without murder then you could make it happen.

Also Ebiha is actually a pretty tiny island that happens to be important because it's where the water ruins are. It isn't even southern territory anymore since the guild took it over, technically.
>>
>>2814746
Ah, well. Can't blame a fella for HOPING it'd be that easy, can you?
>>
"Is there a way to fix it?" You ask.

"Well... you did beat their leader in single combat" She says. "It'd come down to which way their old ways stick them: listen to the man who has bested their best, or stand by their tradition and keep her in exile"

You tip your head towards the ruined bits of metal on the dock. "I can be pretty convincing" You say.

"You'd have to go there and do it face to face, and the only ships for a hundred miles are leaving" She says. "It may not matter in the end anyway. To them, treachery is treachery"

You sigh. "Damn it... come on. We're done here" You say.

Leah starts heading up the stairs, but Namaki stops you for a moment.

"You know why she didn't tell you, right?" She asks. "She was worried you'd hesitate if you knew the truth"

"I told her I don't need protecting" You say.

"You're not seeing the bigger picture here" She says.

"And what is the bigger picture?" You ask.

"She knew she'd be exiled. She had a choice between putting you in danger and potentially sacrificing her home" She says.

"I know. She wanted to protect me. That's what I just-"

"Tsk tsk. You do still have much to learn, dear" She says, walking off toward the stairs.

You look down at Coral. "Now there's one I haven't heard in a while" You say.

The ships in the distance are moving away, but you watch for a minute to make sure none get any bright ideas.

When you get back up top, Namaki and Leah have already gone back to the palace.

I'd be pretty fine with convincing the others without murder. This guy had to go though. I was honestly pretty disgusted with him. He knew we were here and didn't bring the sword, he tried to use Emi to hide behind, and was generally just a worm who was only using honor when he had the biggest stick in room. My only regret was that we killed him too fast to shame him. But at least we avoided knowingly harming Emi or allowing him to create a hostage situation with some of his captives. There were a lot of ways this could have gone worse. Maybe some better, but also worse.

Yeah, If I could change anything, I would have just cut his hands off.
And If we get a chance, I still want to deal with the Ebiha people somehow. If theyre too against letting us lead, maybe they'll at least agree to letting Yuu have a say in who leads next since he's apparently the big dog now. Enough to push them in a good direction? Maybe that guy whos sword we earned can help.

I think hitting the ships is a bit too much if we can make the point without doing so. Particularly given a lot of them seemed unwilling to fight but felt compelled by their culture to follow along.

We are very close to reaching the scale of a god, and that can be dangerous. Not like an omnipotent entity, but definitely a Thor or an Ares in their less over the top myths. Yuu can be somewhat sociopathic at times and he has the power to do a massive amount of damage. We need to be careful about raining down judgment without thinking it through when it's so easy for us to do so.
>>
>>2814820
When you look at it in a certian angle, Yuu does quite a few selfish things that just end up being benifical for other people
>>
You hop on the Rook and get going, zipping off to the palace through the still empty streets. Oddly enough, the vehicle Namaki and Leah rode isn't here... so they either went elsewhere, or Namaki is taking it for a bit of a ride.

...

Either way, you may want to buy Leah a drink later for subjecting her to your companion. Namaki can be a bit overbearing at times if you're not willing to take part in her little games.

But that can happen later. You head up and find Daria in her room, where she's sitting in her comfy chair bouncing impatiently with Val in her lap.

"What are you doing?" You ask.

"Yuu! Is it over already? Did we win?" She asks.

"Well... yeah. Would I still be here if we didn't win?" You ask. "That doesn't answer my question though"

"I'm waiting for a reply!" She says.

"From...?"

"Auntea!"

...

"You know that's going to take at least a day, right?" You ask.

She keeps bouncing in place, undeterred.

"Up. Come on. Let's do something" You say.

Daria hops to her feet. "Like what?" She asks.

"I dunno... have you been practicing your swordplay?" You ask.

"Can we go check out the fountains? They just got them fixed and I know you wanted to see them last time-"

"You know that's not going to work, right?" You ask.

She puffs out her cheeks. "Fine. I haven't been practicing" She says. "Taking care of Val is a lot of work, and drills are boring!"

"You need to be able to defend yourself, cuz" You say, putting a hand on her shoulder. "Why don't we go practice for a bit"

"You'll practice with me?" She asks, suddenly brightening right up. "Yeah! Let's go!"

Daria skips out of the hall, tripping over her own feet and falling flat on her face.

"Your footwork could use a bit of practice too..." You say, heading over to help her up.

When she comes up off the ground, you see that Val is stuck to her face. Daria peels her off and takes a deep breath. Val finds all of this quite hilarious, but Daria looks like she might start crying...

"Hey, you're doin' fine. Let's just take it slow..." You say, guiding her along with a hand on her back.

"Okay..." She replies.

>1/2

You've got a bit of steam to blow off from that last fight, but you hold it back against Daria.

She's not bad, but then she never has been. She's got a decent fighting sense, and she can be pretty creative and well coordinated sometimes, even catching you off guard occasionally... her only problem is that she's predictable and clumsy the rest of the time.

You go back and forth for a bit, with her manaing to get a few hits in here and there... but the majority of the rounds go to you.

"You know the advantage actually goes to you here, right?" You ask. "Remember that in a pinch, you have 3 more limbs than me. Try using them"

"Okay" She says, looking focused.

You trade a few strikes, and she whirls around. When her back is to you, you move in, but her tail whips up and aims for your face. After you just manage to avoid getting smacked, you prepare for her follow up... but she falls over.

"What happened there?" You ask.

She lifts her head, and you can't see her face through her hair.

...

"Have you considered tying it back?" You ask.

"I hate ponytails" She says.

You roll your eyes and help get the hair out of her eyes. "Don't let Marybell hear you say that. She likes the style so much she's got two of 'em" You say.

Daria laughs at that.

"But if you want to fight, you can't have your hair getting in the way all the time... maybe if you cut it short-"

"No! I like my hair long! If it were short I couldn't do this" She says, shaking her head as her long hair bounces around everywhere, getting right into her face again...

You brush it away from her eyes again. "You could braid it, maybe" You say.

"I don't know how to braid hair..." She says.

"I've... got some experience with that" You say.

"You do?" She asks.

"Lyvia's handmaidens taught me how..." You say. "That was actually kind of a hassle. They had been trying to braid Lyvia's hair because, like you, she hates ponytails. But they did it too tightly and long story short it took half an hour just to coax her out of her tent"

"And you still braided it after that?" She asks.

"Yep. As much as she hated it when the handmaidens tried, the act had piqued her curiosity..." You say, leaving out the sheer amount of bugging it took for her to finally convince you to try it out for her...

"C-... can you braid my hair?" She asks.

You shrug. "Eh, sure. Why not?" You say. "Sit down here, I'll see what I can do..."

Daria does as you say, and you get started.

"So... speaking of Marybell. Have you heard from your brother in a while?"

"Marybell and Derrick are together?!?" Daria asks.

"That's... what I just said, yeah" You say.

"Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy" She whines.

"Why is he... dating Marybell?" You ask. "I dunno. They seem to like each other"

You hear Daria grumbling...

"Do you... not like them as a couple?" You ask.

"I always thought he got along with Lulu much better" She says. "I wa so ready to have little wolf nieces and nephews..."

"Really? My money was on Pip, personally..." You say.

She shakes her head. "Pip is really vulgar, and too laid back" She says.

"You think so? Some guys like a girl with a bit of spice in their vocabulary" You say. "And I happen to find her laid back attitude refreshing"

"Well if you like her so much, why don't you marry her?" She says.

You chuckle. "Maybe I will..."

"Huh? Seriously? I thought you were with the guild bunny... uhh... Stacy" She says.

"Stella" You say. "And I was never with her. We were just really close"

"Didn't she go north with you?" She asks.

"That was her sister Hella. Stella was taken by the Legion" You say. "And she's fine now. The Antolians have her"

"Oh... I thought Hella was the Felid" She says.

"Ilica is the Felid" You say. "You know you're gonna have to remember their names if you go to Lutain"

Daria puffs out her cheeks. "I'm bad with naaaaaames" She says. "Can't they all just wear nametags?"

"It's Lutain. Not Lubrian territory. Strictly speaking nobody rules that place but me" You say, adding when she goes to reply- "And I'm not making them wear name tags"

"Aww..." She says.

You finish up her braid and pat her shoulders. "There. How's that?"

She shakes her head, whipping the braid around. "Not bad" She says. "We'll see if I get used to it..."

"I'm good on sword stuff for today..." She says. "Plus this braid is super easy to grab and pull"

"I wouldn't pull your hair, Daria. We set these limits remember?" You ask.

She nods. "No hair pulling, no tail pulling, and no hitting you in the crotch" She says. "I remember. But I still don't wanna sword fight"

"Well what do you want to do?" You ask.

She shrugs, and goes over to pick up Val. The little slime is currently trying to eat one of the practice swords. "You pick"

Daria nods, and you send her off to go and tell her dad so you can put things away. She leaves Val with you, as the slime still has a practice sword jammed halfway through her...

"The popsicle look is cute, but I'm gonna need that sword back" You say.

Valerie waves her arms around, but doesn't fight when you pull the wooden sword out. In fact, she seems glad to see it gone.

"Not a fan, huh? Bit off more than you could chew?" You ask, bouncing her on one arm as you put the swords away.

"Bech" She says.

"You said it. Never eaten a practice sword myself, but I can't imagine they're very good" You say. "What do you eat nowadays, besides hands?"

She bubbles happily at the mention of food, but otherwise doesn't answer. Seems like she can make sounds now, but hasn't quite figured out speech.

You head down to the entrance and make small talk with your baby sister as you wait for Daria. It doesn't take her long to arrive...

"He say yes?" You ask.

Daria nods, and you motion for her to get on the Rook with you...

The fountains are a spectacular sight, just as Pip told you when you came here with her the first time.

At the center of the pool a large, tall mana crystal stand up right, surrounded by 3 rotating golden rings. The rings are water devices that shoot a constant stream outward as they rotate around the crystal. The water spouts turn, rise and fall every which way in a seemingly chaotic form... but if you watch closely enough you see several repeating patterns.

"You do?" Daria asks "I don't see anything"

"The devices that change where the water goes are all out of sight, under the water. But they're also stationary, so the water always does the same thing at certain points" You say.

Val is splashing around at the edge of the pool where it's only a few inches deep. You put her in there because Daria said she seemed a little dry.

"I still don't see it" She says.

"Alright... see that spot right there?" You ask. "There's a device there that makes the water go upwards. The stream doesn't always hit it at the same angle, but it always goes up"

"Ohhhhhh" She says. "I never noticed that... but then I don't get to come here that often"

"You ever swam in here?" You ask.

"Only when I was a kid" She says. "Derrick and I came here during the summer festival. I remember flying around trying to dodge all the water streams, then I landed on Derrick and he almost drowned and big sis made us go home..."

You smile. "Sounds like fun"

"Not as much as it you think. Those water things are a lot stronger than they look..." She says. "I was up there for a while, and I got really tired..."

"Is that why you went and landed on Derrick?" You ask.

"Yeah but he was trying to swim out to the middle and I didn't see how deep it was..." She says.

You try your hardest not to laugh, and fail.

"Hey! It's not funny, we could've died!" She says. "I mean, if big sis hadn't come out..."

"What was she like?" You ask.

Daria looks down. "She was... big. Like when she talked people would listen..." She says. "Everybody says Auntea is a good leader, but Salma was born for it, and I..."

You ruffle her hair. "You'll do fine. Don't you worry" You say. "Now, let's get Val out of there before she absorbs too much and head on to the archive"

Daria nods.

When you pick Val up out of the water she's like a little balloon. "Just what the heck did you-"

She spits water in your face. You manage to turn her away quickly, but not before getting your head soaked. As the little slime deflates, she laughs like that was the funniest thing ever... and her cousin joins her.

"Next time you get to pull the baby out of the water" You say.

"Oh, she does that to me all the time" She says. "I would have warned you, but I thought this would be funnier"

You head over to the Rook, trying to remember if the Archive has towels anywhere, and wondering how best to exact vengeance...

>1/2
>>
The archive is quiet when you arrive, which is normal. What's not normal are the lack of carts out front. Usually it's been pretty difficult to find a place to park the Rook...

"I wonder where they all went?" Daria asks.

"Shelter, maybe?" You ask. "They all left when it was us invading, so it makes sense that they'd do the same for the southerners"

"Think we'll find anyone here?" She asks.

"I guarantee there's at least one person" You say. "Come on"

You head inside and go right to the main reinforced experimentation room. Inside you find 2 people: A thin blonde man and a beaver woman. Stoencht and Carla.

Carla isn't technically an official scholar here, but she took a position as Stoencht's assistant after they met at the tower.

The experiment they seem to be performing is similar to the one you found Stoencht attempting the first time you came here. Only this time instead of just having the mana and soul draining devices, he's got another device for each element of magic set up as well.

You walk in and pat Stoencht on the shoulder. "What's the experiment this time?" You ask.

"We're creating a portal" He says, completely unfazed by your arrival.

"To...?" You ask.

"Nowhere!" He replies, reaching out to a nearby table and grabbing 3 pairs of goggles. "Good to see you gain, Yuu. Put these on"

You put the goggles on, hand one pair to Daria, and put the third on Valerie. She seems mildly amused by them as they start sinking into her face.

"Safety measures?" You ask.

"In place" He replies. "And it's quite safe. We've performed this once before. On that note: Carla, if you will"

Carla nods to you, then turns on the devices.

A black rift appears between the energy drainers, and you can feel the energy in the room start to move toward it. Then the 8 devices all power up and blast the rift with their respective magic.

The rift stabilizes into a circular hole in space, rimmed by white light.

"And it's safe? It's not draining mana at all?" You ask.

"Not even a bit. Observe..." He says, as he sticks his head into the portal. He keeps it there for a few seconds, before suddenly struggling and screaming.

Carla rushes in and pulls him out, only to find him laughing. "Gotcha" He says.

"I thought we said no more pranks like that!" She says.

"We did?" Stoencht asks. "When was this?"

"Last time we opened this thing!" Carla replies, smacking her flat, heavy tail on the ground.

You shrug, hand Val off to Daria, step up to the portal, and stick your head in.

It's empty and dark as far as the eye can see. There's no ground, no sky, no... anything. The only light is a pale shaft coming through the hole you've got your head in the continues on its path until it fades away.

Somehow despite the emptiness, you can breathe. You don't feel any air moving past you, and it would take days for the pressure out here to equalize. So there must have been air inside already.

You pull your head out and turn to Stoencht.

"So? What do you think?" He asks.

"I could breathe" You say. "How is there air inside?"

"Not a clue" He replies. "We still haven't figured out what this place is, and this is the first real chance we've had to test"

"Taking advantage of the panic?" You ask.

He shrugs. "Only bloody time I can get into this room" He says.

"What gave you this idea?" You ask.

Stoencht and Carla start shutting the machines back down. "Well when I saw the portal in those ruins your redheaded friend was kind enough to show me, I thought that maybe the 8 elements were what I was missing" He says. "Turns out I was right, but it seems that wasn't all I was missing... what brings you here, anyway?"

"Well I was hoping everyone hadn't run home so I could talk to some of the energy scholars... and also Princess Daria wanted to see it" You say.

"P-princess Daria?" Carla asks, turning to your cousin who is currently trying to fish the goggles out of Val's head.

"Hello" Daria says when she notices she's being stared at.

Carla and Stoencht both bow to her, and Stoencht whispers to you. "Think you could have warned me?"

"Eh, she's fine" You say. "Right Daria?"

Daria is clearly not used to being around other people, laughing nervously at the sudden attention.

A sprite flies into the experiment room, carrying a note for you. You don't recognize the handwriting, but the smooth, wavy letters do bring a certain foxy lady to mind...

"What is it?" Daria asks.

"Dinner at the Rynia manor, apparently" You say, scrawling out a quick reply and sending it back with the sprite. Refusing would be rude, and you can't leave town until Daria gets her reply from Altea. "And all I brought is this... are my dress clothes still in my old room?"

Daria nods.

You're honestly not really looking forward to this. Without Pip here to help fend off Leah's mom you may find yourself engaged before the night is through...

"Well... this" You say, holding out your hand and gathering energy into it until a little red ball of soul appears. "I'm not casting anything, just gathering soul from around us"

"Remarkable" He says. "How did you learn this?"

"From my bucklers I figured out that moving soul around is something I could do. Then I figured out that I can control my mageblade by moving the crystal inside, while keeping it on by funneling energy into it" You say. "From there I discovered that I could also cast spells and do other things just by managing the soul aorund me, instead of using what's in my reserves"

"So that spike was you?" He asks.

"What spike?"

Carla pulls out a long piece of paper with a wavy line on it. It looks like the stuff they'd use to measure an earthquake. "We got a spike in soul activity earlier" She says.

"That was probably me blasting the southerners into oblivion" You say, looking over the graph. "If I'm reading this right then this here is from me gathering energy and holding it around me, this is me blocking their first strike, and this big one is me firing back"

"Very interesting... when the energy group comes back tomorrow I'll be sure to show this to them" Stoencht says.

"I'll come back tomorrow, if I have time" You say. "Until then, good luck with your experiments, and be careful with this stuff"

"Don't worry, Prince Yuu. I make sure we take every available precaution so we don't kill everyone" Carla says.

"As someone who happens to like living, I appreciate your efforts" You say. "Come on, let's head back so we can get ready..."

You, Daria and Val leave the Archive and hop on the Rook, zipping back to the palace in no time at all and heading to your respective rooms.

Yours is cleaner than you remember it being, and it smells different too. But all the stuff that didn't get brought to Locke when news of the invasion hit is still here. Thankfully your dress clothes fall into that category.

The suit is the one that Frederick designed. Made to go from 'stuffy upper class' clothing to 'loose and combat ready' with a few simple adjustments. You'll have to either bring this back to Lutain with you or get Frederick to share this design with your manor's seamstress, as you really do like the way it looks and feels.

Once you're dressed you go out and meet Daria. She's wearing a light blue dress. It's a simple number, but the colour brings out her orange eyes, and fits her child-like attitude.

Val is naked, as usual. But she'd just try to eat any clothing you put on her, so that's fine.

"Shall we?" You ask.

"Let's go! It's been so long since I visited the Rynia's" She replies.

You take her out to the Rook and tell her how to sit on it in a dress, then get moving...

>1/2
>>
You arrive at the Rynia manor, and James, the steward of the house, greets you at the door.

"Welcome back, Prince Yuu" He says, giving a polite bow to you and Daria. "And you as well, Princess... and princess"

"Hi James" Daria says. "Say hi Valerie"

Valerie bubbles indifferently, and James chuckles at the sight.

"Your friends have already arrived. You know the way to the dining hall?" He asks.

"I remember. Keep up the good work" You say.

"I always do" He replies.

You go inside and make your way to the dining hall. Usually he'd have to show you in, but you've been here enough that he knows you like to do things yourself.

The first person to greet you is one of the kittens. Based on her size you'd say this is Delilah. From what you remember Delilah doesn't like being picked up, so you acknowledge her presence and let her follow you around.

The second person you see is someone you weren't expecting...

"Tian?" You ask.

"Hey kid" Tian replies. "Miss me?"

"Wasn't expecting to see you here" You say. "How've you been?"

"I've been good. Got myself a new stage to perform on, and even a partner to perform with me" She says.

"Well... I kinda knew about that stuff already" You say.

"Oh" She says. "Well then there's actually nothing new. How about you?"

"Well since the last time I saw you... I became champion of the north, father figure to the Pale Queen, Lord of Lutain, and... oh! I can do this now" You say, making your mageblade float and activate.

Tian watches your blade float around. "You've been busy" She says, turning her attention to Daria. "And you must be Princess Daria. I'm-"

"The Monkey Queen!" Daria says.

"A fan, hmm? Have you been to see me perform?" Tian asks.

"N-no... but I've always wanted to" Daria replies.

"Speaking of performers, is Ava here with you?" You ask.

Tian nods to someone behind you. "Ask her yourself" She says.

You turn to see Ava standing behind you with a smile. She's wearing a bright pink dress, and her feathers are a 'nervous but excited' mix of yellow and light blue.

"Hey Yuu, long time no SQUAWK-" Ava says, her polite, steady posture drops as Delilah pounces at her feet. She backpedals away from the little cub in a circle until she runs into you and scrambles up your side.

"Glad to see you haven't changed much, Ava" You say. "How's the singing career?"

Question: I have the sense that the females generally start out as more animal than human and becoming significantly more human as they grow older, maybe even to the extent you see outright changes in apendages and so forth. Is that true? Is there a general rule that can be followed?

I presume angel and devil types are always fairly human and don't have far to change while slimes are more inhuman and don't change as far either, but what about your average cat or dog or snake?
>>
>>2819711
Their bodies stay the same as they mature. Felids and Canids always have the same ears, paws, and tail. Serpids always have their fangs and snake half. Some girls are born with some more or less animal/monster like features (like some foxes having paws while others have hands, some Felids being born with slit pupils while others have round ones, etc.) but the features they're born with don't change.

Ava tries to step down from your back, only to get her leg swiped at by Delilah.

"Call her off!" Ava says.

"She's a kitten. Her claws barely even leave a mark" You reply.

"I don't caaaare" Ava whines.

Suddenly Val drops onto the angry kitten, gurgling gleefully. Delilah struggles for a moment, but seems to realize that Val isn't so bad and hugs her. She even tries to do a little bit of a grooming lick, which doesn't go well...

As the kitten is distracted, Ava climbs down brushes herself off, and clears her throat. "Hey Yuu, long time so nee" She says, looking panicked before adding "Uhh... no see"

"I hear you're a singer now" You say.

"You've seen my show?" She asks with a big smile, her feathers turning bright yellow. "Did you like it? How did I sound?"

"I didn't hear it like that... Tian told me" You say.

Ava's feathers turn a cool blue colour. "Oh... of course. I-I knew that" She says. "A-are you staying long? I've got another performance tomorrow night"

"Can't stay that long. This was a short visit, and I have to be back at the front soon" You say. "You're always welcome in Lutain, though. We could find a stage for you there too"

"That would be cool" Ava says, before whispering something to Tian.

"Lutain is in Antolia, near the border" Tian tells her. "Not a long trip by air, but you'd want to plan things so you know you'll be able to perform there"

"Cool. We can talk about that later" Ava says, turning to Daria. "Who's this?"

Daria explodes, like she's been waiting to be noticed this whole time. "Oh my gosh, you're Ava! I heard so much about you and-"

You tune the rest out. Daria tends to gush sometimes.

"Shall we head to the dining hall?" You ask.

"Sounds like a plan to me" Tian replies. "You might wanna grab the little ones..."

You look down to see Val and Delilah both just laying on the ground sleeping, and bend down to pick them up. "Yeah the floor's probably not a good place for them to be" You say. "Let's go"

With the kids in hand, you usher Ava and Daria off to the dining hall with Tian in tow.

Inside you see the rest of the Rynia family, including Leah, her mother and father, her aunt Sara, and the other kitten Denise.

You spot a place at the table that has a little sprite set up which is obviously for you. But like last time it's right between Leah and her mother...

You sigh and go to your seat. Coral is excited to see her little table again. You were supposed to take this one with you the last few times you've been here, but you keep forgetting.

"Welcome back to Lutain, Prince Yuu" Lana says, standing so she can shake your hand. "I understand that trouble with the southerners went quite smoothly"

"Not as smoothly as I would've liked, but they're gone now" You say, sitting down as she does.

Sara comes by to grab Delilah and put her to bed, exchanging a brief greeting with you before heading off.

"How are things on the front?" Lana asks.

"Moving slowly, but we're keeping our momentum going" You say. "By the time I return Riverhold should be in our hands and we can continue our southward advance"

"Southward? We'd thought you might go to Johnston" Lana says.

"Johnston is not as important as it was when the Antolians were in charge. We're working on securing the Lubrian border right now" You say. "Plus there's something important in Kirando, but that's a topic for another time"

"Agreed. All this talk of war is like to sour my appetite" Lana says. "I understand you've acquired some lands now"

You nod, as servants go around the table pouring wine for everyone now that you're all seated. "I am now Lord of Lutain" You say. "Bit of a fixer-upper as towns go, but it's off to a good start"

"How so?" Lana asks.

"Well the Legion failed to burn it down, and it's no longer ruled by a madman" You say. "Seems like a pretty good start to me"

Lana picks up her glass once everyone's is full. "A toast then. To new beginnings" She says.

"Here here" Namaki says.

You take a sip along with everyone else. The wine is good. Sweeter than what you were drinking with Pip, but not so sweet that it's overpowering...

"This is pretty good. Where's it from?" You ask.

"From the Uliar falls region" Lana replies. "I didn't think you had much of an interest in wine"

"I've learned a thing or two from P-... Gerard. A friend of mine" You say, remembering that Pip got most of her wine based knowledge by stealing bottles from the Rynia's cellars and pawning them off... "Bit of a lecher but he knows his stuff"

"Gerard... Gerard... he was here the last time, was he not?" Lana asks.

"Yeah. He's one of the older guys" You say. "And I shouldn't call him a lecher. He's actually in a fairly stable relationship with a woman from Otuna"

"And Otuna is your town, correct?" Lana asks Namaki.

"Correct" Namaki says, as she swirls her glass around. "And the Uliar wineries have come quite a ways from the swill they used to produce. I recall buying into the hype around their first production season and being thoroughly disappointed"

"First season...?" Lana asks, looking confused. "They've been around for almost 300 years now"

Namaki gives Lana a sly smile and takes a sip.

"Mom, Lady Namaki is apparently much, much older than she looks" Leah says.

"Much... how much?" Lana asks.

"She's 348" You say.

"349 now" Namaki says, pointing a finger at you. "You missed my birthday"

"In my defence, I don't know when your birthday is" You say.

Namaki shrugs it off. "Nothing to worry about, dear. I only just now remembered that it had passed recently" She says. "After around 18 it just becomes an excuse to eat some cake"

"Oh... well for the future, when is it?" You ask.

From the way Namaki is smiling, you know the answer to that question before she even says it. "Yesterday"

"Neat..." You say, feeling your cheeks heat up a bit. "I'll have to get you a proper present next time"

"I look forward to it" Namaki says, taking another sip.

Lana and Namaki start talking about how Namaki has managed to keep her good looks after 3 centuries, leaving you with a moment to cool off.

You look around the table and spot Daria and Ava chattering excitedly, meanwhile Tian and Marcus are talking about possibly expanding the city's concert hall. Sara hasn't returned yet after taking the kittens up for a nap, so that leaves you with Leah, Val,. And Coral...

Val is currently trying to eat your cutlery, and you have to pull your fork out of her head...

"No Val. Dinner is coming soon" You say.

Val gurgles and waves her arms around as you give your fork a quick wipe down and put it back.

"You sure you still want to eat with that?" Leah asks.

"Not as sure as I was 5 seconds ago" You say. "Is there a reason why I can't eat with a fork that has a little slime on it?"

"I dunno" Leah says.

"Well then... I can just use this one for her. There's like 5 others here" You say. "And I know they're for other things, but does anyone honestly follow these dinner procedures?"

"We do" Leah says.

"Oh, well... darn" You say. "A little slime never hurt anyone. Plus she's pretty much all water at this point"

"From what?" She asks.

"I hadn't seen the fountains yet, so we swung by there and let her splash around for a bit" You say.

"I guess we did just finish fixing them recently" Leah replies. "What did you think?"

"I was impressed" You say. "I hope you didn't have people fixing that instead of the automatons though. It was nice, but..."

"Took 5 minutes to get them back up. We just didn't want to turn them on until we were sure the generator could handle it" She says. "And the automatons should be back at full strength soon... hopefully"

"Good" You say. "How about the big guardians? Any progress on them?"

"Still going through a redesign" Leah says. "The old ones were a bit too slow, and I don't even know why a self destruct feature was put on them. I mean, they're guarding the most sensitive area of the city, but when they take too much damage they explode to try and take out their attackers, along with the thing they're supposed to be protecting"

"Came in handy for me" You say.

"It almost killed you, didn't it?" Leah asks.

"Only a little" You reply "I got better"

Leah chuckles.

After chatting for a bit, the house servants bring in a salad as the first course. You're not a huge fan of salads. Lettuce, cucumbers and some of the other stuff you can handle. But you've never been a fan of raw tomatoes.

Fortunately Val seems to love them, making you glad you have the little eating machine with you to spare you.

You keep it as subtle as you can, eating around the tomatoes until Val seems ready for another bite so you can stab one and pretend that it was going to your mouth. You don't think anyone's noticed, and if they have then they don't say anything.

"Didn't think lions would be big salad eaters" You say.

Leah shrugs. "Gotta get those vegetables in somewhere" She says. "I know you're a bit of a carnivore too..."

"I do like meat" You say. "But I wouldn't say it's my favourite..."

"Oh? And what is?" She asks.

"It's like... you have a circle of dough, and then you put tomato sauce on it, then cheese on that, then whatever else you want on top of that, then you bake it" You say.

"I didn't think you liked tomatoes" Leah says.

"What makes you say that?" You ask.

"You gave all of yours to Valerie" Leah says. "She's starting to turn a little pink down there..."

"That was... coincidence" You say. "Besides, tomatoes and tomato sauce are different things"

"I may have to see if our chefs can replicate this pizza. If you like it so much, it must be good" She says.

"It is" You say. "What about you?"

"I like bacon" She says. "I would genuinely eat nothing but bacon all the time if it wasn't so bad for me..."

You chuckle at that.

The rest of the meal goes pretty well. Ava and Daria have definitely become friends, meaning that if Daria comes to Lutain with you then Ava will almost certainly come visit.

Val manages to eat a pretty good portion of your dinner, passing into a food coma after getting a little bite of your dessert. Meanwhile both Namaki and Tian seem to be trying to work a deal of some sort with the Rynias.

Tian gets a pretty solid 'yes' on extending her stage by the time dinner is done, and Namaki is trying to see if she can borrow some engineers to bring Otuna's mana generator up to modern standards. Thankfully this keeps Lana's attention elsewhere, so she doesn't get to spend most of the meal trying to set you up with her daughter.

It's not that you don't like Leah. She's pretty cool. You just don't think the two of you would get along in that way. Plus being pushed towards you just makes you want to not like her just out of spite.

Coral thoroughly enjoys her meal. You'll need to remember to take the little table this time, and then see if your maids would be willing to make tiny versions of each meal the way the Rynias do.

When dinner is done, everyone makes their way to the sitting room. Leah heads up to her room to grab something, leaving you without your conversation partner for the moment.

You figure you'll-

You decide to head over to Tian, who has just wrapped things up with Marcus.

"Business good?" You ask.

"Business is good" She replies. "We've had some crowding issues the last little while, which is why I'm trying to add some extra seating to the theatre. How about you? Any chance you can teach me that floating trick?"

"I don't think it's the kind of thing a normal person can do" You say, floating your blade around your hand. "I can do it because I can control soul. You'd have to be able to do the same thing with mana for it to work for you"

"Darn" She says. "Blade's looking nice, though. A bit sharper, more focused"

"It was much better for a little bit" You say. "I did some crazy thing to borrow power from alternate versions of me. One of them was a master with this thing. Had my blade looking like red steel"

"How come you can't keep it that way?" She asks.

"The borrowed power went away, even though I remember a bit of what it felt like" You say. "And I'd probably be further along with this thing, but my focus has been on training other things"

"I figured as much when you were spending so much time at the archive" She says. "I'd still be up to teach you, if you've still got something to learn"

"If I weren't so busy I'd take you up on that" You say. "Maybe when the war is done you can teach me how to make my blade all fancy"

"It would be my pleasure" She says.

Ava and Daria come up to you, both with big, excited smiles.

"Ava wants to show me her stage! Can I go? Can I? Can I?" Daria asks. "Pleeeeaaase?"

"Alright, but... not alone" You say. "Kanzka?"

You look around on the floor, expecting to see her pop out of one of her hidey holes...

"Yes master?" You hear from above your head. You look up and see her hanging upside down above you.

You seem to be the only one unfazed by her sudden appearance. "Go with Daria and Ava. Make sure they're safe" You say.

"But what about..."

"I'll be fine" You say, putting a hand on Daria's head. "Watch over her"

"Yes master" She says as she drops down to the floor.

"Alright. Go on now" You say. "But don't stay out too late"

"Yay! Thanks Yuu!" Daria says, jumping up to hug you before heading out with Ava and Kanzka.

"That spider woman... was she-" Lana says.

"Always here? Yeah probably" You say. "I met her up north at the tournament..."

You tell the room your tale. Well... most of it. You leave out the parts that might be classified, or the ones that make you a little uncomfortable... so basically the entire story with the exception of everything to do with Raven.

"So you're friends with the Pale Queen now, huh?" Leah asks. Her parents and Namaki have mostly gone off to do their own thing, leaving her, Tian, Sara, Val, and the kittens as your only real audience. And of those you think Leah is the only one who really listened through the whole thing.

Sara and Tian have been talking about something else, Val is still sleeping, and the Kittens are playing what looks to be hide and seek.

"Friends might be understating it a bit, but pretty much yeah" You say.

One of the kittens jumps up into your lap while trying to evade her sister, getting into a brief scuffle that ends with Val waking up and looking very cross.

"Aww, whatsa matter Val? Did the kitties wake you up?" You ask.

Val gurgles angrily.

"Well tell them that, not me" You say, putting her down and letting her join the fun, but keeping an eye on her unless one of the kittens gets a little claw happy.

You don't think they could actually hurt her, but you'd rather not find that out the hard way.

"They're not usually this energetic at this hour" Leah says. "Must be happy to see you"

"They should be getting to bed soon, no?" You ask, checking your timekeeper. "Heck, I should be getting to bed soon. Today's been... rather long"

"Yeah, me too" Leah says. "I could probably sleep in, but now that I'm kind of the commander of the royal guard I've got a whole bunch of responsibilities..."

You go and say a round of goodbyes, exchanging some parting pleasantries wit Lana and Marcus, giving the kitties a few scratches, telling Leah that you may see her tomorrow if you have time.

Namaki decides to spend the night here instead of at the palace, and subtly pokes fun at you for seeming disappointed by the news.

Your goodbyes said, you scoop up your slime and head out with Tian. The palace is on the way to her home and her concert hall, so you decide to drop her off-

You speed up and go past the palace, getting directions to the hall from Tian because Coral is asleep.

Val actually fits pretty nicely in front of you on the Rook. You'd want some way to keep her steady for longer trips, but for these short in city rides she does just fine.

Tian unlocks the front door and you both head inside. You can't hear anything at the front, but Tian seems to.

"Oh?" Tian says. "Come with me. We'll go in on the balconies..."

You follow Tian up a flight of stairs to a balcony overlooking the stage from further back. Down below you see Daria and Kanzka sitting in the front row, while Ava stands on stage and sings.

You notice 2 things: the first is that her feathers seem to shift colours in time with her music, and the second is that her singing voice is absolutely spectacular. You have no idea what she's singing, but the upbeat mood of the song makes you feel kinda warm and fuzzy...

"So?" Tian asks.

You nod. "She is good" You say.

Tian smiles, and you both turn your attention back to the stage. Ava sings a few more songs before deciding it's time to stop. Each song has a different feel, making her feathers shift between different sets of colours, and making you feel different with each one.

You remember hearing that a Siren's song could make you feel things. This must be what hearing it in person feels like.

When Ava finishes her little performance, you see Daria hop to her feet and start clapping enthusiastically...

You stand up and start clapping as well, surprising everyone below except for Kanzka.

"Yuu?" Ava asks.

"Hey guys" You call back. The acoustics in here are pretty good for getting sound out from the stage, not so much for getting it back. "Beautiful performance"

Ava's feathers turn a nervous shade of yellow, and she lets out a squawk.

You chuckle and springboard your way down to the floor, then head up to the stage.

"Performing definitely suits you better than anything in the military did" You say.

"W-well yeah. The scouts were all 'your feathers need to be grey and brown and boooooriiiing'" She says, making her feathers camouflage colours for a brief moment as she hops down. Her vibrant colours return as she does a little twirls. "Here I can be as bright as I want!"

"The brightness works better when you actually want to be seen" You say.

Ava pauses, then giggles and hops in for a hug.

"I'm glad you found your place, kid" You say.

"Just you wait. I'm gonna come to your town and put on a performance so good it'll knock your socks off!" She says.

"I'll have to reinforce my socks for it then. Thanks for the head's up" You say. "But right now Daria and I should be getting back"

"Don't leave without coming to say goodbye" Ava says.

"Wouldn't dream of it" You reply
