Last time on Code 214, from most to least recent:

* Played Napoleonic Waterloo scenario with Ichigo and Ikuno
* Started reading the Legend of the Galactic Heroes by Yoshiki Tanaka
* Became open to the thought of mentoring Zorome at piloting
* Defeated Zorome in training unit sparring match
* Apologised to S13 for our earlier actions
* Had an intense dream involving Naomi

Using Maid RPG and 1d4chan's High School RPG for roll rules. House rules are created ad-hoc. Write-ins always permitted. A particularly controversial decision will allow a revote to confirm or reject that choice.

OOC votes and revotes will always occur where an option leads to a romance flag.

DC 16. Futoshi rolled 4 for 7 Cunning, total AP of 28. Futoshi succeeds

You leaned lightly on the door of Hiro and Goro's room, managing to listen in on what they are talking about.

It seems that Goro is concerned by recent events involving Ichigo.
"Ichigo's been spending more time with you recently." Goro observed.
Hiro grunted in agreement.
"I feel better with her around. It's like the days in the Garden, before we knew there was something wrong."
"I see." Goro concurred - almost as if it were forced.
...
...
...

It was as if Hiro's and Goro's thoughts were dancing in silence, trying to avoid raising a the next relevant topic first.

"Hey Hiro."
"Yes?"
"What do think of Futoshi?"
"We can rely on him." Hiro told Goro.
"I see." There was doubt - very slight doubt, yet there nonetheless in Goro's voice.

And thus came one of the more bolder statements you've heard from Goro in a while:
"Should I challenge him? Like Zorome?"

"And prove what? He already said sorry."
"...You're right."

The blankets shifted, as the two of them began to drift their own ways to sleep.

---

The night deepened. You went to bed.

---

The sun rose and as usual, you were the first one awake.

Mitsuru's wrinkled sheets spoke to his trouble sleep. Yet again, Zorome was strangely snoozing, content.

When the Athenians won against the Persians at the Battle of Marathon, they sent a messenger by the name of Pheidippides back to Athens in order to report their victory. Pheidippides, having accomplished his torturous cross-country jog, collapsed dead.

While you had no intention of collapsing dead from exhaustion, you supposed a somewhat exerting run might be good for you...

---

...in reality, you just end up winded halfway through.

You never really exerted yourself like this before. You'd worked up a mighty hunger.

You made your way to breakfast.

---

You end up practically wolfing your breakfast, finishing in record time before the others. That pulled some attention - mostly in the form of surprise - towards you.

It is the last hours of the morning.

Read wins:

>Reinhard von Lohengramm’s last name was originally Müsel, and in IC 467 (SE 776) he was transferred into an impoverished family that was aristocracy in name only.

Ah yes. More censorship regarding how human beings come to be. {+1 Cunning}

> At almost the same time, the Free Planets Alliance gained a new strategist. This was Yang Wen-li, who arrived in SE 767 and enlisted at age twenty.

> "“Don’t worry. If you follow my orders, you’ll be all right. If you want to get back home alive, I need you to remain calm and do as I say. At the present moment, our side is losing, but the only thing that matters is to be winning in the last moment.”"

Enter Yang Wen-li... {+1 Skill}

> "“Don’t worry—use multiple channels and tell all vessels to open the C4 circuits of their tactical computers. That’ll be enough. If that’s all we say, the enemy shouldn’t understand even if they pick it up.”"

Preparing plans beforehand was key... {+ 2 skill}

> "He’s a threat to alliance forces, and to the old power structures in the Imperial Navy, he’s most likely a threat as well." Yang referred to Reinhard...

Thus to be a threat to the klaxosaurs means to be able to threaten APE. {+ 2 cunning}

> "Kircheis! We’ve been had. The enemy wants to separate on both flanks and come around on our back side. They’re using our frontal breakthrough against us. Damn them!”

> "Thirty minutes later, both formations were
spread out in the shape of a ring. It
was a strange sight. The alliance’s vanguard
was engaged in a blistering
assault on the imperial fleet’s tail end,
while the imperial vanguard was
attacking one tail end of the forked alliance
fleet."

Thus the Battle of Astarte peaked - coalescing in that final ring formation - a clash of ships against ships - two forces crying to encircle each other, yet both being only able to retreat rather than decisively attack. It was a formation that that saved the FPA from total annihilation.

It might be transferable to combat involving using the entirety of a plantation - 'sacrifice firepower in order to prioritise survival'. You're not too confident that it may apply to Franxx combat however.

{New battle tactic learned: Ouroboros Formation - -10% Plantation damage, -10% Plantation Attack Power}

The sunlight is no longer the commons like it did at midday. Already, that magnificent orange of the afternoon was already beginning to colour the common room.

It would sure be a nice place to... spend time with a girl, in the style of the character Pao Lin that had brought the ire of the FPA command. Speaking of that, what was so wrong about spending time alone with a girl anyways? That it was a bad thing seemed to be a recurring theme in books - it never said why.

Unfortunately for your body, there didn't seem to merely one girl that you could spend time alone with that it would become a vice. There was a duo - Naomi sat adjacent to Miku, who was listening to her, supportive as thought Naomi were worried.

You managed to overhear some of Naomi's chatter with Miku:
"...Hiro, then we'll get sent off."
Miku gave her reassurances to Naomi:
"Well, I don't think Hiro is that bad."

It seemed your entrance into the commons was timely - Naomi was almost about to react against Miku's childlike reassurances, but your presence seemed to pause their line of discussion.

"Hi, Futoshi!" You almost raised your eyebrows at how less repelled Miku seemed by your presence compared to previous times. "We were just talking about things to do in the mansion."

2*4 Loyalty against 3*2 Affection

Futoshi succeeds in charming Naomi.

Naomi has a total of three flags. You may add in 'time-skip' as a write-in option with Naomi as your pistil if you are satisfied you have finished preparations for the main game, i.e. in-series Episode 1.

Unless Naomi has more flags than other individuals individually, she will not be your pistil.

Flags:
Naomi: 3
Ichigo: 2
Kokoro:1
Miku:1
Ikuno: 2

---

In the old game of chess, one could obtain a new Queen by promoting her from a pawn. Only through a pawn may a new Queen may appear. So did the pawn before you have a potential to become your queen piece in the game you were preparing to play against APE? ..Yes. Naomi was so ordinary that you could mould her into whatever you wanted and what you wanted was a revolutionary who had sprung from humble roots, to fight against the monstrous juggernaut that was APE, its downfall the only thing on her mind - that was why you chose her.

You whisper into Naomi's ear:

"You won't 'disappear' so long as I am around. I will protect you. To the library after dinner." You straightened up and began making your way out of the commons.

Of course, this did not go unnoticed to Miku:
"Hey, what did you say to Naomi?"

Of course, answering her was not necessary. You simply gave Miku a disinterested glance.

On the other hand, it appears that what you said to Naomi had left an impression on her - her eyes were glistening as if a paladin had arrived - she wanted to believe in you.

You fully intended to give Naomi a reason for that.

---

You had dinner. There was a certain tension across the tables. Every time you placed your fork into your mouth, it appeared that Naomi could not help but to glance in your direction. Thankfully, only the two of you seem to notice this.

She really was relying on your promise. Only time will tell if you can keep it.

---

You cleaned yourself up with the rest of the boys.

---

It was night. You stood, awaiting Naomi in your corner.

There was a certain mystique to the thought to inculcating Naomi with your thoughts in the library at nighttime - now it was just a matter of waiting for her to arrive.

The library door opened. Lo and behold, Naomi actually took your words seriously and bothered to come to your corner.

You couldn't read her mood. When people are so 'ordinary', they arrive at a point when predicting them becomes almost impossible.

"So, how exactly do you intend on 'protecting' me?"

Straight to the point - you were almost caught off guard.

[] "It's simple. We kill Papa." Get rid of the thing that threatens her.

[] "Stick with me. Become my pistil. We'll conquer anything that gets in our way together."

"I can show you how to protect yourself." You confidently proclaim to Naomi.

"And how can I protect myself with what you promise? How can you even stop APE's countless goons? I've got the lowest potential as a pilot. I'm a triple digit at the far end. The moment I'm paired with Hiro, who's just as useless, we're both goners. How can you possibly stop that?" Naomi pours her worries out.

The more worries and anxieties - the more you can remove them. The more you remove them, the more she becomes bound, more grateful to you - and from that, the ultimate loyalty shall spring forth.

"Call it a hunch. But I think growing closer with a person of the opposite gender makes it more likely they will be a Franxx pair. And some Franxx pairs are more effective than others. For succeeds.

---

You begin slowly approaching Naomi. She stands still, as if a butterfly ensnared in your web of machinations and deceit.

You felt that you were approaching a point of no return - the die will soon be cast and beyond the Rubicon, it's either do or die.

"Every night from now on - study military strategy, tactics and history with me. Become the greatest Pistil that this world has ever known. Do it for humanity. Do it for the things in this notebook."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seFX-e3VDyE

You stood, bearing the notebook outstretched with both your hands. That diary contained humanity's oldest hopes and dreams - its greatest desires and deepest laments. Stunned, her eyes understanding what it meant to you, Naomi received it. It was clear to even her that you were entrusting great and terrible knowledge to her. That such a symbol notebook begat such a reaction, as if it were a sword of legend - did someone tell the others of its existence?

That was irrelevant. No, what was more on your mind right now was just how gently she held it her hands. Naomi's fingers traced the humble notebook's cover - unassuming, rugged, crumpled - but to her, it was as if it were a gift from the heavens.

Naomi's dainty fingers turned the cover to the inner contents of the book's pages. Her brown eyes darted to and forth and she took it the roughly written timeline you had painstakingly carved in ink and lead - Sumeria, Xia, the Indus, outright alien-sounding cultures long extinct - to the nation-states of 3rd Millennia, from the State of Japan, to the United Kingdom and the United States of America - polities unfairly snatched from their cradles in humanity's history by this unending war. Yet even as her eyes glistened at the tragedy before her, she was determined to press on - for the beauty in tragedy was never in the end, but rather what had been and could have been.

Naomi gently turned the pages of the notebook - and 'it' grabbed her attention - 'it' being your notes on the French Revolution. It was the archetypal revolution, the perfection of the human want to be not enslaved, to not be subjugated and it entranced her. From the peasants growing sick of the old manorial lords' banalités, to the masses of women demanding bread, her dilated pupils betrayed just how captivated she was by the passion of that kingdom's struggles. She shifted through the pages, deeper into the revolution. Her curly hair seemed to almost gain a life of its own as it skimmed through the paragraphs covering 'À la lanterne' - the rustic practice of lynching abusive feudal lords by lampposts, just as they deserved.

What truly brought Naomi to mental Paradise however, was your accounts of the guillotines. She was overjoyed at reading the heads of the tormentors of the nations simply being lopped off and disposed of - taking the logic of the ancien regime's tortorous breaking wheels, nooses and other such devices but then flinging it off in a completely different direction - If Children were to be pruned by whatever horrors await them on the other side, why couldn't Papa be pruned just as simply by a bullet to the back of his head?

Such was the ardour of her joy that she placed your diary gently to the side - the solution to the agonies of the present had been found by you in the past - she leapt forth, her girlish arms embracing you incompletely for your girth.

"Futoshi! Show me it! Please, teach me it all! Show me how to beat Papa! Show me how to beat the Klaxosaurs! Please, Futoshi, teach me all you know!"

You gently hushed Naomi, mindful of whoever could be spying - for even the Futoshi Corner was only safe from surveillance in that APE's eyes could not reach them - there was no guarantee about the ears. You helped her stand up.

The deepest night was spent with a study on the basics of warfare - on one the same books that no doubt had changed the trajectory of your life - The Art of War

Your precious pawn Naomi was advancing on the board.

The sunlight attacks your eyelids - the sunlight, filtered through, is a mild orange. You open your eyes.

It appears that Zorome and Mitsuru have already made their way to breakfast. That only made sense given how late you were up.

You change and quickly head down to the dining room.

---

Breakfast is a mostly normal affair but for the occasional stares Naomi gives at you. You entertain her newfound obsession by occasionally teasing her, parrying her looking at you with your own glances. Miraculously, no other girl nor boy seems to notice this ocular duel - or rather, tango between the two of you.

Of course, this goes nowhere. One of you relents first, although who did it, you were not sure.

Breakfast draws to an end as the last plates are scavenged clean. The rest of the boys are about to wander off to their own business.

The two of you stood opposite each other. Hiro in the training unit truly gave off a different aura. Whereas Hiro the unarmed parasite to some seemed like an unimpressive melancholic, busy contemplating his own navel day and night, you could see shades of the Hiro from before the day in the Garden - that day before those wings of that Michael were snapped and broken in half - the day Hiro became a mere mortal on the level of the other children. Indeed, were it not for the fact that you knew that this was a mere sparring bout beforehand, you would have thought that he was out to kill you.

Hiro's training unit stood both poised to strike and ready to defend. Your confidence in victory was only worth so much before that dragon bearing the form of a training unit.

"On your count, Futoshi." Such was the self-belief that the training unit gave to Hiro - he who had otherwise mysteriously lost virtually all piloting potential - that he was willing to concede to you initiative.

---

"On yours rather, I insist." You concede the initiative to Hiro.

"Alright." Was his simple reply.

You have already warned yourself that Hiro in the training unit was never to be underestimated. In the training unit, the miserable Hiro of the present was practically replaced by the larger-than-life Hiro of old. If the training unit brought Hiro back to has glory days - would they drag you down to those times of uncertainty and fear?

You braced yourself and almost immediately you got your answer. Hiro charged - rushed - no, practically flew forth, brandishing the training paddle as if he were Michael storming down from Heaven!

Your attempts at parrying would've looked decent enough had it been against Zorome - however, against your current opponent, it more resembled a novice's feeble attempt at deflecting a master's flurry of blows.

You are pushed back by Hiro, barely maintaining your balance. The training unit beeped as a hit registered from the force of Hiro's lunge pushing you backwards. Four paces to high ground left.

No taunts came forth from Hiro - he did not need to taunt to unnerve you.

You continue your unyielding defence against Hiro.

Yet again, Hiro charges towards you with a relentless thrust that once again, you only manage to barely parry. If this were a man-on-man fight, no doubt you would've have the winded knocked out of you. Yet again, your training unit registered it as a hit. Five paces to high ground left.

"You're fighting defensively. You won't let me score hits, because I'll hit hard. You can't hit me either. If you attack me, I'll win. If you keep on defending, we'll draw when we have to go to lunch. Either way, can you beat me?"

"Actually, so long as I don't lose, I win."

Hiro charges strongly, with a strong kiai no less, in an attempt to shock you into submission. It permeates the room and were it not for your focus, it would've made you flinch, with a disastrous result no less.

"War is not about victory, Hiro. It's about survival - survival until we get what we want. At least it is in our case. We don't have the strength for decisive victory. If we outlast, if we outlive, we will be able to achieve our goals. And here, we both learned how to fight better. So we both won." {+1 Futoshi Skill, +1 Hiro Cunning, Will}

You actually manage to perfectly parry Hiro's attack - and that was a victory in itself.

An alarm rung on your PDA - lunchtime. Given the way Hiro's training unit powered down, he must have also set an alarm.

Hiro jumps out of the training unit.

"Yeah, I guess." He wasn't too interested in pressing the fact it was ultimately a draw.

You make your way to the library in order to continue reading. As you leave the common room, you could have sworn something was trailing you - in a perfectly benign way of course. Oh well, if it was benign, it didn't particularly matter.

---

You gently open the door, mindful of anybody else who could be reading there - as it were Ikuno was continuing her reading of Clausewitz's book. Other than a a momentary glance to check who was coming in, nothing else came from her, as usual.

You seat yourself in your Corner. You take out LoGH and resuming your reading.

---

Chapter 3 covered internal imperial politics. There seemed to be this dynamic of disgust between Annerose, the Kaiser and Reinhard - strange given that this connection gave Reinhard power. {+1 Cunning}

Chapter 4 covered Yang's altercation with the so called Patriotic Knights Corps - a bunch of hardline FPA zealots - one ought to be subtle, which the PKC were not... {+1 Cunning}

The next chapter would cover the attack on Iserlohn... but that would be left for later, as Ikuno had already left for dinner. Your belly was rumbling with hunger.

---

You had dinner and cleaned up. You got ready to mentor Naomi.

You awaited Naomi in your corner. She arrived, and you went to reviewing what you had taught her yesterday.

The two of you made your separate ways to your bedrooms.

You decide to go to the Futoshi Corner with a view to uncovering whoever is snooping on you. As you noted before, it this had been for a short amount of time, you wouldn't be particularly concerned. However, given that it has been going on far more longer than an ordinary stalk-a-thon, whatever an ordinary stalk-a-thon was, it would be an understatement to say that you were becoming concerned.

You take out a random book and pretend to read it. Like a scurrying vixen in the dark, you sense that presence darting through the bookshelves, evidently trying to spy on you from an alternate angle.

Speaking of vixens, that was no boy sneaking about, if the way the the footsteps sounded was anything to go by. A swallow spy agent?

You supposed that it could very reasonably be paranoia on your part. What business would the high command of APE have trying to spy on a simple bookworm glutton such as you? Why would they spend time and effort, training an elite female assassin to charm and slaughter a mere disposable parasite who happens to like flipping through the vast volumes of human literature?

It was probably, most definitely a fellow resident Parasite of P13 up to no-good simple tomfoolery in the night. That or an assassin who was very good at conjuring that impression.

You had to question the virtue of such a girl.

That deja vu feeling of marmalade struck your lips again.

You try to snoop her out.

A tinge of paranoia begins to pollute your thoughts. The thought of APE sending an assassin to you while you were on an empty stomach didn't particular strike you as something desirable. Your eyes dart left and right. No visual signs.

You fail to find her, only a whiff of marmalade - marmalade and flowers - making it to your nose.

Marmalade and flowers...

You try to snoop her out yet again. Naturally, you fail...

Now, whoever was snooping you leaned more to annoying brat than murderous assassin. Can't be too sure though.

Marmalade, flowers and a distinct brattiness and petiteness, all in one bundle hiding in the shadow like it were some game of hide-and-seek, childish little wench.

---

Marmalade - you somehow managed to persuade her to share the last morsels of it with you in the Garden. Flowers - from playing a long time in the flower garden - and from associating with Kokoro. That delightful childishness, that seeming utter innocence and lack of worldliness - being unique to her and Zorome alone. Of course it was Miku.

"Alright, you can come out now Miku!" You heartily resounded through your bookly abode. Bit by bit, Miku revealed her presence, hiding in your Corner no less - first, that loose antenna of hair of hers, then her face and upper half and then the rest of herself. She was quite flustered at being discovered, so it seemed.

"Eh, Futoshi? Why are you walking around in the library at night?" She bashfully tried to deflect the matter at hand.

Small little girl. It was as if you could catch a whiff of the Garden from her. Indeed, that sinful body of yours was already relishing at simply having caught a whiff of that youthful demeanour. Your intemperate flesh warmed, your breath became shallower, your lips drier.

She was so alone and so very vulnerable. She was as a doe in cave of a bear.

4*18=72 AP for Futoshi against 4 Luck * 3=12 AP For Miku. Futoshi succeeds in charming Miku. Futoshi spreads subversive thoughts to Miku.

---

It would not be appropriate to act on your urges with Miku. The squad should not have to suffer for one man's whims. You might have to figure why you're beginning to have these inane urges to get close to girls recently, but not at the cost of keeping the team together. Best to sublimate it into something else - longing into appreciation, appreciation into acknowledgement. Add a deep breath or two.

That was better. You felt your passions dissipate, even before Miku's childlike cuteness.

"It's a shame you'll have to fight Klaxosaurs." You state simply.

"Eh? But Papa..." Impressionable little girl. Must've been Zorome rubbing off on her.

"Papa also sent our friends away. They never came back. The klax have never thrown us away because we were not worthy. They never forced Elixirs onto us."

You paralysed Miku with your views. Good. Time to move in for the coup de grace.

"What did you reckon I was doing with Naomi? You think I was playing with her? I can't play anymore. Naomi lives in fear everyday of being 'sent away'. We shouldn't be living in fear. One day we will have to protect the Adults. In the past, Adults protected Children. The world has been turned upside down. It's not right. None of this is right. So I had to give Naomi hope. That's why I've been there for her these last two days."

"Futoshi...?"
You saw in her eyes that she was trying to understand you - she really was.

"Sneaking around in the night. In olden days, it would've been simple fun and games. I think you should be allow to live the life you want, Miku. But there are people who won't like me. You're really good at hide-and-seek. But you shouldn't do it, not in the world we live in. I might've thought that someone else were out to get me. That could've gotten dangerous. So, Miku..."

[] "...Please go be a brat somewhere else." Her playing around with you is only going to end up with her getting hurt.

Ah.

You internally apologised to Zorome. He was going to feel lonely sooner or later when his fellow brat got dragged into the mess that was your worldview. Whereas APE stole childhood from Children by forcing them into war, you took childhood from your fellow children by leading to them to the poisoned well that was your subversive politics: "I must study politics and war, that our Children may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy. " Such were the - no-doubt censored - words of an 18 Century American Founding Father. Two different kinds of bullet shot forth from the same barrel - one was of APE and the other was of Futoshi. In the end, childhood was but gunpowder to be burnt by either. A victim of this era's turmoil, Miku was yet to be another innocent victim shot at dawn - along with Naomi and Hiro, she would be yet another who would be pushed into wagering their life for your cause.

"So, Miku - ...if you really want, I guess I could teach both you and Naomi."
You took advantage of her attempt at sympathising with you. You brandished the mortality of Children before her - 'Memento Mori' - and pushed her in right into your slaughterhouse.

"Yay! I'm gonna learn from Futoshi together with Naomi!" Miku somehow managed to break into her characteristic childlike cheer despite what you had just told her earlier.

Maybe she was just trying to be strong in the face of what you were all up against. Maybe she didn't fully grasp that your night studies with Naomi were for the purpose of forming an understanding of the world meant to directly clash against the one the Garden Caretakers had forced upon you. Even worse, maybe you genuinely had just impressed her that much.

Did being a brooding, bloodshot Papa-hater attract such attention that much?

"We should go to sleep." You stated.

"Ehihi~" was Miku's simple affirmative giggle. And so she began skipping off to her dorm as if nothing serious was said between the two of you.

You retire to the bedroom.

---

You huddled in your blanket, waiting for your desire to cool off.

You begin to understand that your body is changing. Beginning with your dirtied underwear and intense thoughts of Naomi from last time, continuing with your underhanded verbal maneuvering that drew Miku closer to you, your body and your mind were changing. With how you had raised hell with the rest of S13, it was obvious that you were becoming bolder and more reckless. From simple crying from being alone in the Garden, to provoking conflict and taking larger risks, growing was having an intense impact on how you behaved. That same spirit animated your thoughts towards Papa - from fearing him to outright wanting to slaughter him.

Had you chosen this or was your mind at the whims of your body?

Regardless,

---

Now that you had your breakfast, you supposed that it was time to actually put it to use - that, and overthinking about the girls was sort of a distraction. No doubt running it off was an alright solution.

---

One of the sweet things about mucking about outside was the chance to appreciate the humble beauty of the land. Even as the ugliness of the outside world placed itself in blighted contrast - cracked soil and naked mountains - the beauty of the little world inside the birdcage was truly something to admire. As vile as APE were, no doubt they were decent landscapers.

To think that in the ages long before Gilgamesh, humanity wandered the earth in packs and fed off the land, hunting and gathering - it only seemed possible had the land outside had once been green and vibrant as the land within Cerasus' Mistilteinn section.

Something primal within you stirred - humans were never meant to live like this, cooped up under giant domes. Had you been one of those prehistoric humans, no doubt at your age you would've embarked on a large hunt with the Adult caste people of your tribe, feasting on the roasted flesh of your quarry at the end of the day. There was something about it far more beautiful than how you lived.

Your stomach growled. It was probably time for lunch.

---

You finished your lunch.

You noticed Mitsuru left some pieces of it untouched. Shame.

The girls were just about to finish their lunches as well. Speaking of which, you didn't really pay attention to the way girls daintily chewed down their chow, taking so much care not to bite off too much while having enough to chew and chat over...

You wait for rest of the squad to move about onto their own business. You discretely invite Naomi and Miku to talk with you in your corner as soon as possible.

---

You make your way to the library. Miku and Naomi eventually come in, sharing a pleasant chat between them together, surprised that they both were in the library.

Ikuno - who seemingly is minding her own business - deviates from her normal routine of pretending that you did not exist. For a jiffy, you could've sworn you saw a scowl of disgust on her face. She promptly leaves the library. To a casual observer, she was merely going somewhere else. To you, it was quite obvious she was offended by something.

You shrug it off - for the time being. You settle in your Corner and wait for Naomi and Miku to come closer.

"Starting from tonight, the three of us are going to be studying together. Naomi, I will be mentoring Miku as well."

Naomi maintained a perfectly calm face.

"Well, if you got any questions, I suppose I can answer them now. Otherwise, we will be meeting together in the library tonight." You state.

Both Miku and Naomi grunted lightly in the negative. They left to attend to their own business.

That left just you in the library. Strange feeling it was.

You move a bit out of your corner to check for anything. The table has a notebook on it - it probably is Ikuno's.

Well, you wouldn't go around freely letting just anyone see your diary. You allowed Naomi to see it, because you were convinced that it would key to protecting her life. You let Hiro read it - or at least a rearranging of it - because you wanted to give him confidence that you were actually serious about your plot against Papa. If you started going around the mansion letting everyone read your diary, it would lose its meaning. At best, it would become an object others would ridicule you for. At worst, APE would've caught onto the fact that somebody was trying to view the world through a different set of lens - no doubt you would have a very hard time if that happened. Items held sentimental value to people. Such items which happened to also be books held that value to an even greater degree.

You approach the table. You look at the cover of Ikuno's notebook. It wasn't as worn as yours, but evidently she had been keeping it for some time.

"Belongs to Code 196." On the lower right corner of the cover, it was a graceful cursive compared to your simple print. It didn't so much press into the paper of the book so much as delicately mark it.

You pick up Ikuno's notebook, catching a whiff of something from it. It was strangely fresh yet felt written-in at the same time. That diary had become as familiar to her as Ichigo. Indeed, peering through it would be quite invasive and wrong - it would be a repeat of that earlier debacle about pistils and stamens.

Come to think of it, you really didn't notice Ikuno writing in a notebook before. That quite possibly made all her writing relatively recent - it would make sense given how new it looked. If she indeed just started writing into her notebook, then by all counts, she would've been a more voluminous writer than you.

As you made your way back into your corner to stash it away, you got a chance to see both your notebook and hers. You briefly thought of how nice they would be stacked side-by-side with one another.

You pushed your thoughts to the back of your head. Why all this thinking about a book.

You picked up LoGH and resumed reading it. With all your distracted thoughts however, you didn't manage to progress beyond an exposition of how Iserlohn Corridor separated the FPA from the Empire and how Phezzan worked desperately to ensure that it was the only other access route. {+1 Cunning}

Rise and fall of the Soviet Union

---

You decide to cover the rise and fall of the the Soviet Union, a nation-state that existed in the 20th Century - which having succeeded the previous Russian Empire was succeeded in turn by the Russian Federation after a roughly 70 year existence.

Miku and Naomi await you.

The reason you chose the Soviet Union was because it demonstrated an almost unmatched example of a poor country being driven to its greatest heights by an ambitious, if terribly flawed and too-human leadership. In its seven decades or so of existence, the Soviet state apparatus managed to industrialise the otherwise practically agrarian former lands of the Russian Empire, accomplishing for that land's populace that the Tsar's old regime could not. Within twenty years of its founding, the Soviet Union transformed the former backwards Russian Empire into a great power among great powers, one that in the human cataclysm of the Second World War, managed to defeat the Third Reich.

Naomi paid close attention to your narrative of the USSR's rise. {+2 Naomi's base skill.}. Miku was trying to figure out the context of the events you were talking about. {+1 Miku's skill}

Under the leadership of the ruthless and absolutely dedicated Joseph Stalin born Ioseb Besarionis dze Jughashvili, a former seminary student who originally trained to be but a mere priest. Ioseb, in his youth, having encountered and read through 'The Origin of Species' by Darwin, lost his faith after contemplating the age old question of the Problem of Evil. {+1 Futoshi skill}

You moved on from Stalin and returned to the USSR proper. You recounted how the USSR was founded in the midst of what was then the greatest war in all of human history, the First World War. The USSR, having effectively replaced the Russian Empire, sacrificed Russia's western territory to the German Empire in the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk in order to gain time for peace to mop up the White Army, the counterrevolutionary forces. {+1 Skill To Futoshi, Miku, Naomi}

The USSR, within one generation through the chaos created by the Treaty of Versailles, gradually regained most of this territory.

You emphasise that despite these achievements, the human price paid for all this was high - anywhere from 20 million to 60 million people.

You cover the Cuban Missile Crisis, where the United States of America and the Soviet Union almost entered nuclear war with one another.

You covered Brezhnev and Andropov in a matter of fact fashion and how the failed reforms of Gorbachhev eventually caused the dissolution of the USSR. {+ 1 Futoshi Skill, +2 Naomi Skill.}

Your night meeting draws to an end. Miku leaves your study group cheerfully, despite probably not understanding half of what you said.

Quite conspicuously, Naomi remains. She approaches you from the other side of the table:
"To be honest, Futoshi - I don't want Miku studying with us. Last time, you said you wanted me to grow with you. You didn't mention Miku."

Oh dear...

"Futoshi - I'm worried that if you have to teach her as well, you might focus less on me - and then I will 'disappear'. So, Futoshi - if you can't mentor me alone...can't you give me something that you won't give to Miku or anyone else?"

This certainly was a handful.

Naomi closes in on you, tugging onto your shirt's cuffs.

"What can I give you?" You ask in a semi-disinterested tone.

Evidently, that gave Naomi pause - If she was trying to mimic you, then now wasn't clearly the right time. Nonetheless she persists in trying to make her advances on you.

"Futoshi, you've noticed it too, haven't you?" The ordinary-beyond-belief girl shifts her grip on your cuffs to an incomplete hug around you.

'What?' You gesture at her with your eyebrows.

"Our bodies... They're growing. They want things we've never thought of before. Every day, whatever is happening just wants to make me closer to you. Closer and closer and closer."

You decide to entertain her wiles a little longer.

"Futoshi, I dreamed of you last night, you know? After that, I had to change myself. I want to know why that happened. So Futoshi..." she proceeded to whisper to you, almost nuzzling your cheek and ear, "Please bathe with me tonight..."

[] "Too desperate and clingy." Rebuff her advances in her face.

You and Naomi's night together had to eventually come to an end. Naomi accepted this and allowed you to leave first.

You changed into your pyjamas and made your way from the bathroom into bed.

---

It was an almost surreal experience. Henceforth, every night after your meetings with Naomi, you were to bathe with her so that she could have you to herself.

"I'm going to be so tired tomorrow." You grumble as you pull your blanket tighter to yourself.

That bath felt good. It was rather distracting, now that you want to do it again with Naomi, but it was so relaxing that with how soft your bed was, you were probably guaranteed to fall sleep within a couple of minutes or so.

She had such wonderful locks of curly hair.

You wake up. You make your way to breakfast.

You seat yourself at the boys' table with the rest of the boys. From across the room, you see Naomi smiling simply at you. Filtered in the morning sunlight, it was easy to confuse her smile.

You continued with your breakfast. An unpleasant, irritating gaze fell on you from somewhere like a mosquito bite, almost making you lose your appetite.

You ignore it, carrying on with breakfast.

---

You finish your breakfast.
