You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

You had camped out in the Well for the better part of a day, or was it two? It was difficult to tell the passing of time underground, but you had finally processed and taken all that you could conceivably use from the dragon, leaving the rest for whatever other adventurers happen along, or to return to the earth itself. The only intact part left was the head, which Naru has expertly removed all the soft bits inside the skull and applied embalming agent to the rest to keep it from decomposing. You would personally carry this trophy back to the Monastery.

However, the question now was whether to let the Mages continue studying this massive mana crystal sitting under this valley. You've already solved the dying weirwood tree problem by slaying the dragon that was destroying their roots. But, well, Mages and arcane knowledge always came together, and Elias and Nino were not exceptions to this rule.

"So, what are we going to do about them?" Valentia grunts, crossing her arms.

>We need to keep moving. Tell the Mages to pack up.
>I suppose we can indulge them for another day. No more.

You just shrug. You're in no particular hurry at the moment, so let the Mages do as they wish.

"Well, we can't just stay down here forever." Morgan shakes her head. "We'll give them one more day. How about that?"

You nod at Morgan's suggestion. It seemed like a sufficient compromise.

"I guess I'll go tell them the news." Valentia sighs as she walks off towards the crystal chamber.

"Hmmmmm." Morgan looks off to one of the many side tunnels. Most of them were either blocked off or shielded by magical wards Elias and Nino had set up as a precaution, but none of them were properly explored. "I do sort of want to see what else is hiding the Well..."

You tilt your head at her. Something like that sounded dangerous. And who knows how long that spell Elias cast to ward off the effects of heavy mana concentration on her body would last.

"Well, that's why I have you with me, right?" Morgan cracks a grin.

Well, you suppose Morgan's wanderlust couldn't be helped. You pat her on the head to let her know you'd be going along with her.

However, you wonder whether you should bring the rest of the party along or not. Trying to gauge Morgan's intentions was still sometimes a bit difficult. Did she really just want to secure and explore the tunnel, or was she just looking for excuses to be alone with you? Sol knows, it's been tough to find any sort of privacy in this large expedition group.

Most likely, but here's a crazy idea. How about we consolidate all of the exotic materials here for a special project?

All we have to do is find or commission the best craftsmen (or dwarves if we're willing to fork out more) to build a 3rd or 2nd-rate warship with a hull reinforced with processed dragonscales, flying with special magic, and armed to the teeth with cannon and assorted siege weapons. It'll act as a flagship and a beacon for morale!

You give Morgan a thumbs up. You also hear a bark as Romulus trots up, intending to follow the both of you as well. Well, you couldn't fault him for that.

"Well, I suppose I'll let you choose which tunnel we take." Morgan points to three right in front of you.

One of the tunnels seemed to be staying on even ground, though one was curving upwards towards the surface while the other went down deeper into the Earth. You turn to Morgan, wondering where they would leave.

"I don't know!" Morgan giggles. "Isn't that what makes it exciting?"

Ah, well, you suppose.

Romulus barks in agreement, panting in anticipation.

You point to the tunnel that was going down, deeper into the Well.

"All right, let's go there, then." Morgan nods, getting her bow ready. "So who's going to take the lead?"

Well, Morgan definitely did have the better senses, meaning she'd be able to detect any possible threats up ahead. However, she was also unarmored and relatively fragile, even with her wolf traits.

You, on the other hand, were much better armored to take threats head on, especially in this enclosed space, but your helmet restricted your senses and vision so you wouldn't be able to spot those threats as easily.

You put a hand on Morgan's shoulder and lightly push her back a bit so you can take the lead. The tunnel was narrow, so neither of you could just walk side by side easily. Best you take the lead to absorb the brunt of any foe that you would run into.

"All right." Morgan nods as she takes position behind you. "Lead the way, then."

Romulus barks as he takes position beside you, his smaller size allowing him to fit next to you.

As you, Morgan, and Romulus head down the tunnel as it goes deeper and deeper, you start to feel a bit of unease, but can't quite place it.

Suddenly, a rock borer explodes from the tunnel wall. It was a huge, worm like creature with a mouth of nothing but gnashing, acid secreting teeth, built specifically to crush and melt its way through solid rock to find its prey.

And unfortunately, it seems to have come across the three of you.

Thankfully, rock borers were also completely blind, having to rely on sound and vibration to find their prey. Perhaps if you stood still, it would pass you by. Otherwise, its big, open mouth was a big weak point.

"What's going on?" Morgan asks, unable to see clearly from behind you, but certainly sensing something was wrong.

Romulus meanwhile growls and snarls.

You will not flee from this. Not after having felled a dragon. Morgan seemed to have the same idea, as you can hear her nocking arrows in her bow behind you.

The rock borer surged forward, its instincts telling it barrel at you with full force. Thankfully, the rock borer's lack of senses meant it couldn't reliably react to anything that thought of fighting back.

At least, that's what you hope.

Morgan starts off first, firing a volley of arrows in quick succession, but they fail to find any purchase in the rock borer's maw, striking and glancing off its many teeth before being ground up and crushed to pieces.

That left you to pick up the slack, as you charged forward, your halberd held out as a spear as you stabbed the venomous point into a gap between the rock borer's rows of teeth. The massive wormlike creature quivers and shrieks as the venom pumps into its system, and it immediately backs up, turning its head to the side and bashing into the wall of the tunnel, boring a new hole as it attempts to flee. It clearly didn't expect such a fight.

As the rock borer tried to disengage, it exposed the rest of its body, which was covered in a layer of tough plating to protect it from the jagged rock it traveled through. It wasn''t exactly indestructible, but neither was it easy to pierce.

You just stand back as the rock borer goes its way, leaving to find easier prey. And in just a few seconds, it was gone, leaving only a freshly bored tunnel as proof of its presence. Romulus just whimpers as he sniffs the edge of the tunnel.

You're about to turn to Morgan to suggest that you turn back when you see her kneeling at the edge of the new tunnel, her nose and ears twitching as her tail swishes wildly.

"I think that rock borer opened up a new chamber or something." Morgan says as she sniffs. "I'm picking up a smell being blown up through the tunnel. I don't recognize it... but something's down there."

You and Morgan carefully tread through the fresh tunnel until you come across a breach in the side, where the rock borer had apparently sideswiped some sort of chamber, completely taking out a wall of it.

What you find is what appears to be... a chamber of wrought stone. Definitely not something natural.

Had the rock borer just unearthed a Ruin of some kind?

And what you find are bones... lots of bones. And not just bones.

Armor, now ancient and rusting, is mixed among them.

"This all looks Dwarven." Morgan mumbles as she kneels down to investigate. "Did they have some sort of outpost out here?"

You just shrug. Maybe? Dwarves were an ancient race as well, and they typically traveled using routes deep underground. Maybe there was an outpost or colony this far out in the Frontier. The fact that they were apparently all dead seemed to be a big reason why nobody knew about them.

"Should... should we keep going in?" Morgan frowns. "Whatever did them in might still be around..."

Not that you felt it was any disrespect to the deceased, but more that they might not be sanitary for him. He stops and loyally follows.

As you continue further in, you see what looks to be a sign, in old Dwarvish runes. You could just kind of make them out and you squint...

You find yourself in what looks to be a Dwarvish workshop. Tools and tables lay everywhere, covered in a thick layer of dust and cobwebs courtesy of centuries of neglect. On the tables, you noticed shards and slivers of mana crystal. It looked like the Dwarves were studying it as well, hacking chunks of it for their experiments.

"Hey, what's that?" Morgan points to the far end of the workshop.

And there, you could see the body of a Dwarf hunched over one of the work tables, sitting on a stool with his back to you. Well, he definitely wasn't a pile of bones or anything. Could he still be alive?

"Hello?" Morgan calls out, cautiously approaching."Can you hear me?"

No response. But now that you were closer, it seemed that the Dwarf was clutching something in his arms.

From what I can understand, a dwarf ruin was here first, built close to the Weirwood Lake, then Demi Humans built the settlement on top of everything, and at some point a dragon took up residency by the lake.

The Dwarf swings his arm at you, but you see the move coming and take a step back, taking you out of the path of the blow and allowing you to counter with a swing of your halberd.

And, much against your expectations, the Dwarf's arm shatters like glass as it cracks and splinters and falls apart into countless crystal shards.

"That's not a Dwarf!" Morgan gasps. "Some kind of golem!"

Quite possibly. You've fought golems before, but you never recall seeing one made of crystal, or being made in the image of a dwarf. Now that you see it, it looked pretty much exactly as a Dwarf should, complete with facial features and everything. Even the beard was modeled. Except it was sculpted completely out of crystal.

Its eyes glowed a sapphire blue as it continued to advance without uttering a single sound besides the crunching of crystal underneath its feet.

Well, you suppose something like a crystal dwarf would be something Nino would be dying to study. All you needed to do was to restrain it. Thankfully, you had some rope stashed away. Hopefully the golem wasn't strong enough to break through those.

And, well, if that failed, you could always just smash the arms and legs. You doubt it would be able to do anything as a disembodied torso.

You sling your halberd and bring out the rope, intending to wrestle the thing into submission.

"Are you serious?" Morgan gapes.

You nod.

"The things to you do for Nino." She groans as she lowers her bow.

As the golem lumbers forward, you lunge forward as well and give the crystal construct a solid kick in the chest, knocking it off balance. The golem teeters for a second or two before falling backwards, hitting the ground in a heap. You take the chance to dive down and loop the rope around its legs. However, before you can completely finish the knot, the golem is able to reach its remaining arm out to grab yours.

Not wanting to waste any more time, you simply headbutt the disobedient golem, your steel helmet clanking hard against its crystalline face. The golem hesitates for a second, allowing you to bring the rope around its remaining arm and you hog tie the crystal construct.

"Excellent job." Morgan claps for you as Romulus barks in celebration.

You just give Morgan a stare. Why didn't she help?

"Well, it looked like you had things handled, so I was just scouting out the rest of the room." Morgan shrugs. "All the the other doorways were caved in and sealed, but I did manage to find this."

She holds up an old, dusty book, miraculously still intact in the dry, sealed underground chamber.

"The pages are old and the whole thing's written in some really old Dwarven script. Nino would probably know how to read it." Morgan shrugs.

Ah, well then that was nice to know.

You sling the tied up golem over your shoulder and motion for Morgan to follow. This little excursion was over. It was time to head back.

"All right." Morgan nods as she falls in next to you. "Guess we got quite a bit done today, right?"

You just nod. It had certainly been eventful.

By the time you return to the camp, you could see Nino, Naru, and Niko having lunch around the fire. Dragon steaks again, judging from the smell. You couldn't carry all of the dragon's meat back to the surface, so you might as well use up as much as you could.

"Well, guess the two lovebirds are finally back." Naru grunts. "Looking for a nice private little den?"

"Not at all." Morgan pouts, not appreciating getting teased.

"Ah, don't worry about it, she's just messing with you!" Niko laughs.

"Ohmygosh, is that another golem?" Nino's eyes widen. "A CRYSTAL GOLEM?!?"

You nod.

"Oooh! Oooh! I wanna see! I wanna see!" She says, bouncing up and down.

Hm, well, it would be helpful for her to examine it now, but you've all already spent far too long in this cave. Maybe it was better to hold off until you returned to the demihuman village for some proper study.

"Hey! Watch it! You're gonna get dust all over the food!" Naru tuts.

You bow you head in a short apology to Naru as Nino dashes forward, running her fingers along the golem's smooth surface.

"Wow, they really went through the effort of making this look like a Dwarf!" Nino whistles. "Now that's dedication!

As Nino runs her fingers over the golem's "skin", you can see a faint blue glow as Nino pulses her own mana through it to read its magical signature. However, after a brief second, Nino's eyes snap open and she falls backwards, as if startled by something. Thankfully, you're there to catch her to keep her from hurting herself. Despite that, though, there's tears flowing from her eyes.

"Nino!" Morgan yelps.

"What happened?" Niko scowls, drawing her knife and eying the golem cautiously.

"Squirt! You okay?" Naru rushes in, her hands already glowing to apply a healing spell.

"I'm fine!" Nino sniffs as she starts rubbing at her eyes. "Sol, h-how did we not realize it!?"

You look down at Nino curiously. Realize what?

"It's alive! The crystal is alive!" Nino yells.
