You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

A couple more days passed traversing through the highlands and an additional mountain pass. And finally, you reach the edge of a lush green valley. An emerald gem nestled in the center of a ring of impassable snow-tipped peaks.

"Here we are! The Valley!" Janice says with excitement, motioning to the vista before you all. "It's not much longer until we reach the village!"

"Excellent." Elias nods as he gazes on the sight with his ruby eyes. You kind of wonder what he sees through those magical eyes of his. "I look forward to studying this weirwood of yours.

"Well, that's it, right there!" Janice smiles as she points to the trees just up ahead. "You can take a look right now, if you want!"

"Hmmmm." Elias nods, his curiosity piqued.

Morgan, throughout all this, simply stares at the Valley, completely silent.

You just give Elias an exasperated nod. You had traveled all this way to study those trees, after all, and you suppose that you could indulge the Archmagus in his preferred hobby.

"Yes, yes..." Elias' eyes glow brighter as she shuffles up to one of the trees, running a bony hand along its bark. "I can already feel the mana radiating off of it. How can a plant contain such energy...?"

The Twins also come over, each of them carrying boxes full of what you presume are instruments and tools to aid Elias in his studies.

"You know, if you want to keep going, I can keep an eye on them for you." Janice offers. "Artya knows the way back, too."

Morgan just fidgets nervously.

You just shake your head, politely refusing the request. You were actually a bit curious as to what exactly mages did in situations like this.

As you look, you can see Elias take a small chisel or scalpel like tool, using it scrape bits of the bark off into little glass vials. Justin strips the bark completely off a section of a trunk, cutting out sections of the softer inner portions and likewise putting them into glass vials. Caroline meanwhile seemed to be standing guard.

Elias and the Twins continue with their study, gathering more samples from the weirwood trees. You notice that they don't take all their samples from a single tree, but instead many different ones of varying size and color, each sample given its own special label to mark where it had come from. You had to admit, it was very precise and methodical.

Suddenly, Morgan's ears pop up as she instinctively hears something out of the ordinary. You quickly stand up, halberd in hand. The newly added snake fang jutted out from where the spearpoint already was, fused to your weapon thanks to some magical assistance from Nino.

"Whoa, hey, calm down!" Janice waves her arms around rapidly. "It's fine, it's fine!"

"You should've said you were with these outsiders." You hear a new voice.

A young blonde girl with catlike features then drops out of the trees. Most certainly another one of Janice's tribe.

"Oh come on, we only just got here!" Janice rolls her eyes and then smiles. "Everyone, this here is Atty! One of the Valley Guardians!"

"It's Atalanta." The catgirl's eye twitches as she puts her bow away. "Anyways, sorry-"

Atalanta then pauses when she sees Morgan, caught completely off guard.

"Who's that?!" She gasps. "Where did you find her?!"

"Don't worry about it!" Janice warps an arm over Atalanta's shoulders. "We found her on our scouting mission and we were just gonna bring her back to see the village!"

"You know there's only reason one of our kind would out there-" Atalanta narrows her eyes but is cut off.

"Like I said, don't worry about it! She's totally fine!" Janice assures her friend. "Isn't that right, Morgan?"

"Y-yeah." Morgan mumbles, still a wary of the newcomer.

"Anyways, I'd like to stay to scold you more, Jan, but I have to get going." Atalanta sighs.

"So soon?" Janice frowns. "What's up?"

"The seers have been saying there's trespassers probing the edge of the woods. I've been tracking them, but they've managed to stay one step ahead of me so far." Atalanta grunts, her pride obviously hurt.

"Intruders?" Valentia speaks up looking to you. "You can't possibly think it's the Elves...?"

"Huh, we did run into a nasty magic spell of theirs on the way..." Janice nods.

Artya also nods in confirmation.

"I'm not sure what these Elves are, but they bleed, and that's all I need to know." Atalanta says grimly. "Sorry, but I have to keep moving."

"Don't worry, I wasn't in a mood to be running around the forest anyways." Naru rolls her eyes and drags Nino away by the collar. "C'mon, Squirt, you can helep the mages do their thing."

"But I don't wannaaaaaa...!" Nino whines.

You, Morgan, and Niko follow Atalanta through the trees, able to keep pace with her, though you obviously were a bit farther back since your agility wasn't quite to their level.

However, as you weave through the trees, you catch something odd to the side. Suspicious, you switch direction and charge towards one of the wierwood trees, aiming your halberd's spear point right at it.

"Hey what are you-" Atalanta pauses when your attack hits home.

The Forest Warden, camouflaged almost perfectly against the trunk of the wierwood tree, is caught completely off guard and shrieks as the Arjatar's fang pierces through its enchanted wood armor. Activated by the pressure, the fang begins pumping venom, and a sickly, black patch begins to spread across the Forest Warden's chest as it spasms and collapses.

With the element of surprise gone, the other Elves are forced to make their move. Three more Forest Wardens burst form their hiding places, surrounding Morgan, Niko, and Atalanta. Archers begin appearing on the outer ring. No doubt they were hoping all four of you would fall into the trap.

You could attack the Forest Wardens from behind, which should cause enough of a distraction for the others to slip out of the net. However, that meant turning your back to the archers. Then again, Morgan and Niko you knew were capable fighters, and Atalanta must be as well. So maybe you could afford to leave them to their devices...

You charge at the Forest Wardens, but suddenly feel heavy impacts on your back. The Elven archers knew what they were doing, and were quickly making you the focus of their fire. You try to move forward but a heavy bolt from the front slams into our chestplate and deflects off, knocking you back.

You remember those types of arrows. Armor pierces designed to take out knights. Looks like these Elves came prepared.

Meanwhile, Morgan, Niko, and Atalanta attempt to make a break for it, but the Forest Wardens reach their arms out and hundreds of vines and branches spew forth around them, forming a thick living cage and boxing them in even further.

>FATE POINT USED
>You have 1 point remaning!

You charge forward, ignoring the arrows glancing off of your armor as you do so. After all, your armor was no longer made of just ordinary steel, and your mithril chestplate works wonders in warding off what would have otherwise been penetrating strikes. Still, it was never a good feeling getting hit by something while in armor.

But it beat being dead.

You plunge your halberd into the back of the nearest Forest Warden, which shrieks as the venom does its work. The branches it had been sprouting begin to rot and decay, and both Morgana and Atalanta come bursting out, arrows already flying at the more vulnerable archers. Only Niko remained, engaged in close combat with one of the remaining Forest Wardens. The last Forest Warden turns to face you.

The Forest Warden charges you, but you quickly counter with a sweep of your halberd, slamming into its side with the blunt end. The Forest Warden's armor bends and splinters from the impact, sending it staggering. However, it wasn't completely out of the fight.

The Forest Warden, instead of trying to attack you, instead focuses on parrying your halberd swing, deflecting your swing away from it.

However, that means it leaves itself open for a critical moment, and Niko swoops in, her dual daggers glinting as they slash deep gouges into the Forest Warden's armor.

Suddenly, there's a blaring of a horn, catching the Forest Warden's attention. You knew that to be an Elven retreat order. The Forest Warden slams its fist into the ground, causing a flurry of branches to shoot out like a pike wall, forcing you and Niko back and giving it the opening it needs to flee.

"Tsk." Atalanta scowls as she lands next to you. "These bastards are getting bolder by the day."

The catwoman then checks her arrow count.

"You're going after them?" Morgan asks as she lands on the opposite side of you.

"Of course. It's my role as a guardian, after all." Atalanta says matter of factly. "There aren't many of the left now, so if you don't want to chase you can link back up with Janice. She'll take you the rest of the way."

You heft your halberd. You weren't one to leave a job unfinished.

"Still got some steam?" Atalanta grins, as if impressed a bit. "All right then, let's see if you can still keep up."

And with that, the four of you take off.

Unfortunately, when Elves ran fast, well... they could certainly run fast. Your group continues to track the enemy until you reach the edge of the treeline, with nothing else in sight.

"Damn, they fled in to the rocks, huh?" Atalanta spits in the direction. "As long as they're not in the forest that's fine by me."

"We're not going to chase them any farther?" Morgan asks curiously, her ears twitching.

"No point. Our natural advantages go away without tree cover." Atalanta sighs. "If they regroup they'll have the advantage of high ground if we pursue."

"Ah..." Morgan nods in agreement.

"Still, kinda surprising to see Elves raiding this place." Niko frowns. "How long's this been happening?"

"Only for a few days, but their incursions grow bolder." Atalanta frowns. "At first it was just one or two scouts but now, as you can see, they're sending entire warbands in."

You nod. The typical signs of a prelude to an invasion.

"So, you outsiders are familiar with these 'Elves?'" Atalanta asks.

You nod.

"Yeah, they're a... known issue for us." Morgan responds.

"Then you should get to the village and talk to Fardan." Atalanta says, pointing back to the forest. "Just get back Janice and she'll show you the way. I'm going to stick around a little longer to make sure they don't double back."

"Sure." Morgan nods.

"And... thanks for the help." Atlanta says to all of you. "If Fardan remains suspicious of you, I'll be sure to vouch for you."

And with that, you, Morgan, and Niko part ways with Atalanta, heading back the way you came. As you reach the site of the battle, you find Artya there, looting all the slain Elves and taking whatever was of value from them.

"Aw nuts." Niko groans. "Guess we did leave 'em unguarded."

"We don't really need anything from them anyways." Morgan shrugs. "And it's not like Naru is here to complain."

Artya catches sight of you all and waves happily.

I can only imagine us desiring weirwood stuff. Perhaps more exposure to Weirwood allows us to grow a tail and horns rather than just scales?

You just shrug. You agree with Morgan's sentiment that it wasn't worth hassling with Artya over loot. These Elves probably weren't carrying anything of value to you, anyways.

Bags brimming, Artya leads you back the caravan, where it looks like Elias has already finished collecting samples.

"Once I get the equipment set up, I can start some proper experiments." Elias explains. "I would also like to inspect the dying and dead trees you mentioned."

"Of course, of course!" Janice nods and looks to you. "So, things went well, I assume."

You nod.

"Yeah, we took out a few Elves. Atalanta stayed behind to make sure they don't come back." Morgan adds.

"Hm, sounds like her. Atty always preferred roaming the forests anyways." Janice grins. "Anyways, if that's it, then let's go!"

As everybody loads up into the wagons, you catch sight of Artya dashing up to Janice and showing something in her bags. Janice seems to go pale and motions for Artya to close up the bag before continuing on.

Hm. Odd.

The caravan then moves on.

You sit next to Nino and tap her shoulder to get her attention.

"Oh! Hey!" Nino smiles. "You curious about something?"

You nod and point to the trees on the side of the road.

"Oooooh, you want to see if we learned anything new about them?" Nino asks.

You nod.

"Hmmm, well, we just collected samples, mostly, but I guess we did do a few examinations." Nino nods. "I mean, what Janice said is right. These trees, they're totally saturated with mana, which is what the trees are using as sustenance instead of sunlight or water. It's just... really weird, honestly."

You glance at the trees. They were full of mana, then?

"I mean, our best guess is that the trees are drawing the mana up from underground. Like water for regular trees." Nino shrugs. "But all that boring testing stuff is for Elias. I'm actually kinda interested to see if the mana in the weirwoods could be drawn out by a mage to use..."

You somehow aren't surprised this was what Nino was thinking. Sometimes her ambitions surpassed your expectations.

>Sounds interesting.

You shake your head sternly. You doubt Janice and her people would be happy about that.

"Nnnnnn, I guess." Nino sighs. "Well, maybe they'll have big monsters around here to fight, or the Elves can be big dumb meanies!"

You wag a cautionary finger. Given how much Janice stressed that these trees were important to her people, just randomly and rampantly burning the forest would also not go over well with them.

"Jeez, really putting the difficulty on, aren't they?" Nino groans. "Fiiiiiine, I'll try using less destructive magic..."

You nod at that.

"Hey! We're almost there! Janice says happily. "Everyone come on out!"

As everyone starts disembarking, you notice Morgan staying put, her hood over her head.

"I don't think I'm ready for this." Morgan mutters nervously.

You just shake your head and grab Morgan by the collar like a disobedient puppy and start dragging her out of the wagon.

"W-wait! No!" Morgan wails. "I'm not ready yet-!"

However, it's too late to stop now. You pull Morgan out of the wagon and are briefly blinded by the light of Sol. As your eyes adjust, you see what looks to be a small, lush canyon. Weirwood trees with pink blossoms instead of emerald leaves lined the low cliffs, and up ahead, you could see a crimson gate, already open.

And waiting up ahead was a crowd. You guess word of your arrival had already reached the Village.

"There's so many..." Morgan whimpers.

As you get closer, you can see that all of the gathered villagers, unsurprisingly, all had animal features of some kind. Wolves and dogs like Morgan and Janice, foxes like Artya, cats like Atalanta, and even more. There's some with bird feathers, lizard scales, fur and hair of all types and colors. It was a veritable zoo of hybrids.

And all of their attention wasn't on you or your companions, not even the skull faced Elias.

All eyes were on Morgan.

"Is that a white wolf...?" You hear them whisper to each other.

"Why would one come back?"

"What does she want...?"

"Don't worry, don't worry!" Janice says quickly as she meets the crowd. "Come on, nothing to see here until they go meet the Chief, okay? All of you move along and carry on with your business!"

With that, the crowd begins to disperse, but their gazes still focus on Morgan.

"Why are they all looking at me like that...?" Morgan whispers.

"Ha ha... sorry about that." Janice sighs. "It's uh, not common we see a white wolf like Morgan around."

"Apparently." Niko huffs.

"Anyways, if you're all still feeling exhausted, I can arrange lodgings for all of you." Janice continues. "Unless, you want to meet Chief Fardan right now..."

You look to Morgan and nod to her.

"We'll go see Chief Fardan, then." She says softly.

"Sure thing." Janice nods. "This way."

And so Janice leads your dismounted caravan into the village. Well, it was less a village than what you were traditionally used to, and more like a small city. Everything seemed to be rather well developed, and built out of sturdy materials. There were rows and rows of houses, all clustered around a city center, where Janice was leading you. Along the way, you drew the eyes of everybody you passed. More whispers and gossip spread, but you all did your best to ignore it.

Finally, Janice leads you to large, round building built out of wood so white that it almost looked like stone marble. The two canine guards posted at the front step aside as Janice walks up. You figure that she had to be a well recognized or prominent figure in this village to be given so much leeway without a single word uttered. The great wooden doors creak open, revealing the throne room within.

All of you were ushered inside, where your eyes were drawn to the throne. Sitting on it was a man with great stag antlers protruding from his head, like some sort of natural crown. Janice and Artya go down on one knee and bow their heads.

"Chief, we've brought outsiders who can help us with the dying wierwoods." Janice explains.

"I can see that." Fardan says as his cold, intense gaze falls upon you and your group. He then visibly pauses when he sees Morgan. "So the whispers from the scouts are true. Are things truly so dire that a white wolf would appear now of all times?"

"W-what?" Morgan's jaw drops. "What's going on...?"

That's what you would like to find out as well. Turns out, Morgan may be far more special than any of you had thought...
