It is the 42nd Millennium. For more than a hundred centuries the God-Emperor of Mankind has ascended upon the Golden Throne of Terra. He is the Master of Mankind by His Will, and the master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the Imperium for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day, so that he may never truly die.

Yet in his Ascendancy, the God-Emperor continues his eternal vigilance. Mighty battlefleets cross the Daemon-infested miasma of the Warp, the only route between distant stars. The way lit by the light of the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of His Will. Vast armies give battle in His name on innumerable worlds. Greatest amongst His soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, gene-forged super-soldiers. Their comrade-in-arms are legion: the Astra Militarum and countless Planetary Defense Forces, the ever-vigilant Inquisition, and the Tech Priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name but a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from aliens, heretics, mutants — and worse.

To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold trillions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. Yet you are not just any individual... You are Aedan au Augustus! Rogue Trader, captain, and master of a ship with authority and freedom beyond the comprehension of the masses. Empowered by an ancient Warrant of Trade and warp-capable ship, you venture in the uncharted voids, discovering lost worlds and civilizations, and bizarre alien technology.

Fortune and glory are yours for the taking as you stand upon the threshold of unlimited opportunities and countless dangers.

You are Aedan au Augustus, Rogue Trader of the Augustus Dynasty. Your lineage is ancient, its Warrant bestowed upon during the Age of Rebirth. However, your Dynasty in recent centuries has fallen upon hard times, with what used to be fleets of warship whittled down to a single frigate to cover the Dynasty's backers and debtors.

Before we begin, this is based on Warhammer 40k's RPG lines. So rolls will be based on d100s with the aim of rolling under attributes with modifiers. Rolls will usually be taken with the best of 3s unless stated.

You've inherited your ship and your crew from your Grand-Uncle, from which of three of the officer's position filled with people you've known since childhood.

You and your crew have just arrived at Port Wander, the last stop for travelers before braving the dangers of the Maw.

It is a monster of a void station. Built by the Imperium as a bastion of rule on this side of Imperial space, it teems with a transitory population of traders, spies, merchant factors, pilgrims, and missionaries with desperate hopes and vain dreams.

It has been not more than three months since you've inherited the Gladius, a modified Firestorm frigate and your grand-uncle's debtors were paid off with selling off the rest of the estate on Scintilla. You've received a cryptic message from one of your grand-uncle's servant, Friedwart Mair, to meet on Port Wander. Apparently it concerns one of your grand-uncle's final tasks.

'The Gladius is docked, Captain,' says Tel. 'Smooth as millennia-old amasec with nary a scratch.' A light turns on her terminal, 'We're receiving a hail from the harbor-master.'

'No doubt wanting his "docking fees",' replies Kára, standing by your side. 'Do you want to answer, or should I?'

After a brief deliberation, you've decided to let Kára answer. Riff-raff don't deserve your direct attention after all. 'Do it, Kára'.

'Aye, aye, Captain. Opening hail now.' says Tel

A bulbous man appears on the bridge's holoprojector. He appears to be middle-aged, his multiple chin overshadowing his neck, and implants caked in organic discharge in some places if you look closely.

'Salutations, kapawu Gladius. This humble one is named Toras Kapkin, representative of Port Wander Imperial Authority. To whom do we have the pleasure of receiving?' drones on the man.

Kára replies imperiously, 'I represent Lord Captain Aedan, of the Gladius, of the indomitable Dynast Augustus. State your business.'

'A small matter, o Great One.' says Kapkin as he bows down. 'We are awed by your presence. The humble one welcomes you to Port Wander. As a gift, your docking fees are waived We humbly present to you salutations from the other Dynasts.'

'Is that all?'

'Yes, madame. This humble one wishes you great fortune to your future endeavors.' replies Kapkin as he signs off.

A plethora of vox messages fill the holo-terminal, each one salutations from various other Rogue Traders welcoming you to port and invitations to vague events. Nothing less than what you expect for a reception for new Rogue Trader such as yourself.

However, one vox message stands out and demands your attention. Recorded in your dynasty’s personal cipher, the message is from Friedwart Mair. He says he has been waiting a long time for a member of the family line to return, and carries a message and a gift from your Rogue Trader’s great-grandfather. He would meet with you as soon as you have arrived at a specified location in the Court of the Dead; Port Wander’s vast markets. It is a matter, he says, that promises great glory.

'Sounds suspicious enough. Have you met Mair before, Tel?' you ask.

'No, but I joined Uncle Narrol a scant decade before you were born so I can't be sure,' replies Tel. 'Maybe Xi knows of him?'

Kára steps forward, "Either way, we'll need to meet up with this Mair fellow in the Court so Captain needs to decide who to bring in the shore party,"

Well, what do?
>Ask Victris-XI

You take a moment to deliberate, hand scratching your stubble.

'Alright, I'll ask Xi,' you say. 'Get ready a squad and meet me by the Caesura'

'Aye, aye, Capt.' salutes Kára. She turns on her heels and strides away to the bay.

You hail the Engine room, where Victris-XI spends most of his time. 'Xi, you there?'

The sounds of heavy machinery and metal hitting metal ring in the background. A sonorous digitized vox sound out.

'For the love of the Omnissiah, you are testing me!' You wince as the slight feedback came from the vox terminal. 'Xi, you cranky old techie! Answer your vox!'

After a brief moment and more swearing, Victris finally answers, 'Ah Captain. Sorry about the noise. I was just putting the Gladius in her proper place. What can I do for you, Captain?'

'What are you doin...never mind.' You shake your head, 'Ever heard of Friedwart Mair?'

'Friedwart Mair? Oh, he's one of Captain Narrol's senior seneschal. We met once before. Why do you ask?'

'We're meeting him in an hour. You're coming with me and Kára.'

'Oh good, Gladius can do without me for an hour or two. AND SHE DAMN WELL...' You quickly shut off the vox before Victris goes on one of his tirades.

Shortly thereafter, the Caesura arrives at the Court of the Dead. As the bay door opens, the stench of the unwashed and crowded masses hits you. You wrinkle your nose, but plows through the crowd anyways. Your group clearly stands out here, both attire and bearing standing shoulders above the local traders and citizens.

You arrive at a small market square, right on the dot of the meeting point. An frail old man, adorned with tattered clothing and broken trinkets sits by a nearby bench. 'Goodman Mair?' you ask.

He lifts his head and stares straight at you. Belying his physique, he lunges towards you, only to be intercepted by Kára. 'Lord Narrol! You're here!' shouts the old man, tears streaming down his face as soon as Kára and your detail starts to raise their weapons

'Wait! Stand down,' you order. Kara and the rest lowers their weapons. The old man kneels down, 'Lord Narrol, I have been waiting for a long, long time for you, milord.'

'Is he Friedwart Mair, Xi?' you ask Victris?

'Certainly looks like him,' shrugs Victris. 'Then again, Captain. All flesh look alike after about half a century.'

'Here is your seal, milord. I, Friedwart Mair, do affirm that I will be ever faithful and bear true allegiance to the Dynast Augustus, his heirs, and successors. So help me God-Emperor,' Mair swears and reveals your Augustus dynasty seal.

'Rise, Goodman Mair.' you gesture towards him. 'I accept your oaths of service.'

'I am not Lord Narrol, but his heir and grand nephew Aedan,' you say. 'Please, take a seat old man. Tell us your story.'

'I am sorry milord. My eyes do not work as they used to.' Mair replies. He took out a flask and drinks for a bit. ' About a hundred years ago, I was the seneschal to Captain Vos Karlorn onboard the Emperor's Testament. We were part of your great-great-grandfather's, Lord Nero au Augustus, fleet. During a terrible expedition to beyond the Maw, our ship was caught in a violent warpstorm and blown off course.'

'After which, we came to a rest in a strange and uncharted system. What was surprising was that our astropath heard a faint message, a cry for salvation from a lost Imperial ship. At first we believed it was from the rest of the fleet, but the astropath called it an echo in the warp, an old message hundreds if not thousands of years old. When we examined it, we discovered what we stumbled upon; an astropathic marker from the fabled treasure ship the Righteous Path!.'

'The Righteous Path?' you tilt your head in confusion.

'Righteous Path. Repulsive-class Grand Cruiser. Very old. Commissioned during the great Angevin Crusade of the Calixis Sector.' answers Victris. 'Locarnus Ryn was its captain. Very bloodthirsty. even by murder-servitor standards. The Crusade arrived upon Krystallian, A world of immense wealth and blasphemous grandeur they say. An ancient colony of Man that had fallen to the heretical worship of false gods and the teachings of treacherous prophets known as the Talisar. Three days it took for Ryn and the Imperial forces he led to destroy the civilization of a thousand years.

Mair interjects, 'When the killing was done, and the corpse counters began gathering up the detritus of war, Lorcanus Ryn marveled at the riches he had won. Never before had he seen such naked wealth; temples packed high with artefacts of rare and wondrous make, statues gilt with gems and glittering with gold, and shadowed vaults of forgotten and forbidden archeotech.'

'Right. Greed, common fault of the flesh.' Victris nods, at least that is what you can see of his mechanical head. 'Lorcanus Ryn decided to have it all. Tore out the gun decks and torpedo bays of his ship. Stuffed his ship with all the wealth of Krystallian. Then marooned his crew and tore out the innards of his ship. Inefficient. Ryn left the world and disappeared into the warp never to be seen again.'

'Thousands of expeditions have been launched to find the Righteous Path. Zero success. Believed to be lost forever by the warp.'

'Until now,' replies Mair. 'Captain Karlorn is loyal to the Dynast. We did not pursue the ship then and there and so returned to Port Wander to inform Lord Nero. For months we waited. But there was no signs of our Lord. Our captain vowed to return to the Expanse and bring back our Lord. I was chosen to stay because Captain was not willing to risk the map. Captain Karlorn never returned. So I waited. And waited for one of Dynast Augustus.'

'My Lord, thank you for I have finally fulfilled my duty to the Dynast.' Mair reaches within his tattered jacket and pulls out a small stasis casket. It bears the lion crest of Augustus. As soon as you touch it, it opens, revealing a small, smooth black rock.

Victris optical implants whirled noisly, 'An astropathic mnemolith? How amusing.' You look in askance towards Victris. 'We should get it to our Navigator.'

It's a pass either way. So you've managed to grab the stone. I've got good news and bad news though. Good news is that North Squad goons are still rattled from their pal's death and missed their volley. Bad news is that you're now in open space with only Kára beside you while the rest of party thereabouts 4 meters behind you. Also, East Squad just opened fire and managed to hit your party.

So you have two options;
>Try Dodging
>Kára or the Vmen will try to be your meatshield.

A girl screams out. The crowd panics and tries to leave the square. With your back against the inner wall of an old fountain basin and ankle deep in murky water, you take a peek in the direction of where the cyber-raven fell. You recognize without doubt a group of 4 goons led by a lady with las-pistol in one hand and cutlass in another. She sees you and barks orders to the goons to open fire upon you.

Kara quickly pulls you back down. 'Captain! We're surrounded by all sides. We've got more hostiles by the East, West, and South exits,'she exclaims.

You reply, 'Hold them off, we cannot let them take the stone! Kara, you're with me! Xi, take the squad and pin the rest of them down!'

'Aye, Captain!' 'Acknowledged, Captain.' Las-shots furiously pepper the stone basin.

'Now!' You stand up and open fire with your bolter. A bolt-round flies through the crowd and hits one of the goons. Agony flickers through his face before the bolt detonates, showering his vicinity with blood and gore. Their leader snarls in disgust and was pulled away by the momentum of the crowd. Screams of pain come from behind you as you take cover once more beneath a crossfire of las-shots.

'We need to get the stone!'You yell under the dust of lasfire.'Crowd's too thick, Captain! Picking up the stone will be a Throne-damn miracle!' replied Kara.

'Maybe not a miracle, but a damned stupid idea. Get the men to move as soon as the crowd drops'

She takes a moment, 'Aye, Captain.' And moves to inform the rest.

Taking a deep breath and a silent prayer to Golden Throne. 'Whomever wants to live drop down NOW!' you yell in the most imperious voice you could muster.

Suprising enough, the crowd obeys and drops to the floor. You spy the stone, lying untouched despite the Chaos. Jumping over the basin wall, you sprint towards the stone, your men panting to keep up. More las-shots fly towards your way, seemingly missing you but hitting two more of your men. At the last moment, you scooped up the gem and fired a few more rounds towards the hostiles. On both the East and West Side, one of the goons turns to ash by Victris and the other lost his arm in a shower of gore. Kara, Victris, and the sole standing voidsman takes up a triangle formation with you dead center.

'Captain, we're not safe here!' yells Kara. 'Then we charge!' you reply.

Pak is not having a good time. What seemed to be easy Imperial creds robbing a merchant fop prince now resulted in half his crew dead or broken. What is even worst is they got the drop on the fopping prince and his entourage. Then they took out their bolters and the damned lady was nowhere to be seen. No matter, he thinks. It was only a matter of time and the local Arbites never did anything this side of the station. Out of nowhere, a voice yells for the crowd to drop. Pak and his crews' eyes widened as the panicking crowd did as instructed, and the fop and his entourage left cover.

'FIRE, LADS!' orders Pak. His crew raised their lasguns and opened fire. Las-shots criss-cross the square, taking down 2 of the armsmen. Then, they returned fire. More of his men dies in showers of gore and explosions. Pak wanted to call in more reinforcements. The fop charged towards him. The last sight he saw was his lower half separated from his upper body.

....

You stand in a muddled pool of mud, blood, and innards from the man Kara bisected. The rest of the goons and the crowd fled after the goon leader was taken down. Kara and the remaining voidsman went back to retrieve the mementos and gear of your dead. Victris turns to you, 'Captain, I estimate a 89.66% probability that more trouble will heading here. We need to leave for the Gladius, Captain.'

'Not yet,' you reply. 'That bird was waiting for us and we need to find out who wanted the stone badly enough to kill a Rogue Trader for it.' As you rummage through the man you cleaved in half, you find a credstick, embossed with an unfamiliar seal. 'Recognize this, Xi?' you ask Victris.

Before you could reply, sirens ring out and an Arbites Valkyrie flys overhead. 'This is Sergeant Targos of Port Wander Adeptus Arbites. Lay down your weapons!' orders the Valkyrie.
