Several rumbling jolts wakes Gilliam from his sleep as the sound of a docking clamp echoes through the hull. The shuttle interior begins to illuminate itself fully as a guard moves over to check on him. Gilliam clicks his window screen expecting the twisted vista of Darwin's jungle, or at least the sprawled Bedrock spaceport.

“There was a change of plans at the last second. We were rerouted through the Teegarden gate.” The guard says as Gilliam examines the seemingly endless sea of metal spires and neon-laced concrete ziggurats of New Tokyo as a meteor shower traces through the sky over the glow of the city in the cold night air. “Your bags are being loaded. This way, sir.” The guard says. He seems nervous.

A dozen groggy thoughts swirl through Gilliam's head at once, half formed. He comes to recognize the city as being on Path, although he can't quite place the exact location on the planet from his view.

“Why are we in Virgo?” He asks. The guard doesn't respond; he likely has less of an idea than Gilliam, he realizes, and quickly gets up to follow with little more than his small travel bag in hand. The shuttle, a small atmospheric lander built to attach onto larger cargo and mail runners for express flights, was situated alone on the platform. A few clearly empty shuttles sit some hundred meters away on their own landing pads with their engines covered haphazardly, but otherwise not a single ship is in sight. The entire port is devoid of people as well, apart from police and PDF forces, and the flickering lights of news screens largely show emergency broadcasts. He slows to read the crawling, low resolution texture as it moves by in Pathian, English, and Arnimian in three lines across the screen, with a vibrant blob of shifting color on the bottom in the Ceph language, and a cluster of orbiting circles in the Valen native language.

This is the planetary emergency alert system: This is not a drill, your local Planetary Defence Force has been deployed and anti-orbital systems have been brought online. Due to extreme power requirements, expect outages periodically during anti-orbital weapon activation. Hospitals and local critical infrastructure will remain operational. Seek shelter in your building's Bombardment Shelter immediately in a calm and orderly fashion and remain indoors until further notice. All citizens are to clear the streets, especially those designated as thermal venting areas for local Anti-orbital weapon systems. In the event of a strike, ensure you check local radiation monitors to determine if it is kinetic or atomic in nature, if indicated it is an atomic strike, be sure to...

Full disclosure, I recently threw out my back, so it has been rather painful to sit in my chair (or stand, or walk, or really do anything other than remain perfectly still on my back in bed) so a lot of my planned prep time was not very productive. That, plus the fact that we are just getting off of a hiatus on a new board means I don't think we will be having all that much crunch in this thread. Sadly, that means no tech unlocks quite yet. I am free tomorrow, however, and this board is slow as molasses in a snow storm, so I will be here in the same thread tomorrow for either a two-parter, a general discussion/QA session, or a mix of both.

Oh this is back? I was just catching up and thought it was dead forever.

Gotta say, as a hive queen we don't seem to have zerg level of massed units. Don't know how I feel about small numbers of high tech fleets, bit too protossy for bugs I would say.

>My dick is so hard from excitement right now
>>
>>998595
yeah he's the Union's resident xeno-biologist now that Seiner is a head in a jar Which we still need to clone as a Chimera

Also I had an idea about the Commonwealth worlds we're helping defend from the Scavs. It would be VERY easy for us to sneak in some Egglayers for hidden hives on those worlds. So easy it would be irresponsible of us not to have Hives there

Lee sits relaxed in a freshly grown chair in the offices of the still barren embassy, the chittering commotion of construction work and landscaping rumbling from beyond the walls in the courtyard. A hologram flips through the channels of the local news, mostly consisting of off-air letter cards, old reruns, or infomercials while the news is almost entirely focused on your hive fleet in orbit over the planet. Periodically you can hear the sound of sirens in the distance, punctuated with the rare gunshot. Local radio communications indicate the planet has descended into a state of panic. Flash mobs and protests have quickly devolved into looting and riots in several districts, and local gangs and other underground elements seem to have chosen the chaos as the perfect cover to settle old scores with multiple shootouts reported in a number of rather shady neighborhoods, but widespread crime and public discontent is hardly a competitive news story compared to an alien armada blockading the capital of the Union.

“Now you can really see this insanity for what it is!” One of the commentators shouts as Lee flips through the channels. “These xenos show up with a damn invasion fleet, and these morons like Seamus and her cronies want to bend over backwards for them. They have been doing this with the Valen clans for years but this is the first time they can really twist the knife with anything approaching a decent excuse. Don't doubt me on this, they are happier than a pig in filth over this! Now we will be right back here at the Silver Mic, right after this break!” Lee shuts off the projector with a yawn.

“Feels like that guy is taking forever. How hard is it to find some decent tea?” He says, you sense a human approaching the exterior door of your embassy office. A moment later there is a loud knock as the door opens into the main floor as a sharp looking man leans in to eye up the foyer. He is wearing a loose looking set of robes covered in circular patterns and a large, toothy grin is plastered across his face. You send Lee the image from your surveying flies and he sighs as he gets up from his seat and moves to the door of the small side office and into the lobby.

“I didn't think the security would let anyone in yet.” Lee says as your speaker scurries in behind him. "Can I help you with anything?"

That is actually my idea for how to combat the Black queen while preventing our drone tech from falling to her hand.
Make a bunch of cheap drones that mach hers until there is a sea of them and scatter our better high tech drones in them, so if they fall the cheap ones can hold her drones back until the body is disposed of or a plasma artillery destroys it and everything around it.

"Ah, yes." He says with a courteous bow. "I do apologize, I wasn't quite sure if you had set up your offices quite yet, but I wanted to be the first person to speak with you, before the general rabble." The man holds a large basket of various jars and cans, and hands it to your drone. The smell of sugar permeates it. "I couldn't help but notice your assistant is searching for a 'oil drum of honey', I figured I could at least help out as much as I could." Your speaker plucks one of the small cans out of the basket with its mandibles, quickly devouring it, metal and all as honey seeps from its beak.

"Acceptable." Your speaker says, and turns away to several workers that begin to rip apart the basket, devouring the intricate wickerfish plating design. The human moves up to Lee, resting an arm over his shoulders.

"I am Anitianus Descolade Librae, primary agitant of the Valen Clan political offices." The man says as the two walk along the rim of the room towards the courtyard.

"Do you have a nickname or something?" Lee asks. "How about, uh, I just call you Anton. I knew an Anton back in Basic." Anton looks dryly at him for a moment before resuming his grin.

"Right, in any case, I wanted to give you the welcome wagon. Show you around. We are neighbors after all, and both of us human citizens in an alien government. We should really stick together, look out for each other, you know?" The two together bump into a large warrior emerging with surprising speed from an office, knocking the diplomat away from Lee as its breath steams and it grunts in disapproval. Your drones together notice the faintest, most insignificant radio signal. A nearly microscopic device, the size of a speck of dust, within Lee's suit collar, although you missed it being placed there.

>>

The envoy backs away slightly from your drone as Lee pats its shoulder.

"They can be a bit jumpy. It's alright." He says. The envoy nods nervously.

"Of course, I apologize. In any case, please, if you need anything, don't be afraid to ask me. You may have the number of the officials who work here, but I have the numbers of the people who fund their campaigns." He says, his smile becoming genuine. "It's not often that adding a degree of separation can improve your efficiency, but when it comes to Union politics..."

"Right, I think I get it. And what would that cost us?" Lee asks. The envoy seems almost insulted.

"Oh, no no, I'm only trying to be friendly." He says. "you should visit our office some time, I would be more than happy to host dinner." He eyes up your group of workers as they finish devouring the gift of honey jars, scraping up and eating the last scraps of basket as one of the workers crunches a metal can in its jaws, swallowing the honey covered metal shreds with ease. "We can accommodate Valen and Human biology, I am sure we could manage with the Hive, if you wish." Lee squints at him slightly as you try to riffle through his mind. It is foggy, almost deliberately so, and filled with pointless information shrouding his intent as he loudly counts up and down in his mind, then recites several recipes and a number of nursery rhymes. You attempt to judge his face, but his practiced emotional baseline is so rehearsed you suspect it has some underlying cybernetic maintaining it.

"I'll keep that in mind." Lee says finally. "And thanks for the gift basket. I'll be sure to send a fish or something." Anton lets out a hearty laugh.

"Excellent! I hope to see you soon!"

Essentially it's caused by the hip pinching the nerve, and then the nerve gets all inflamed.

It's actually one of the few things independent study has found Chiropractics to be more effective in treating than standard primary medicine. Bit of a fun fact there. I believe I brought this up way way back, but I think we should make a Dyson sphere and transform it into a capital ship, using our ftl tech to transport the entire star. We could find a star with barren planets, and completely mine out their mantles for the resources, and once the sphere is up and tuning we could just produce the metals.

Well it makes sense hey know about it, they are running the smuggling route for the ceph escaping there trapped home world

Elements in the valen probably have some idea what the void shards are

It's a very genuine possibility. T b h, it would be more helpful if it was psi protection, but I don't think we can be too careful when it comes to the Valen.
>>
We really should come up with stuff the valen will want so we get frienenemly with each other until we can make a shared research protect for improving the gates.
I'd suggest starting with asking them for a valen body for research.
>>998854
The possibility of them knowing about tachyons is still there though.
>>
Remember guys, most species are apparently even just slightly psionicly sensitive with a few altered exceptions like humans. When dealing with aliens we should assume they have psionic potential
>>
>>998802
>We have to presume that they have a rudimentary method of utalizing it then, we should start installing our usual counter measures and protocols.

We would hear them if they ever used tachyons. You're both leaping to conclusions.

The Valen may be paranoid that the alien hivemind might be psychic, but we can't know for certain that they know for certain.

The more likely possibility is that this is standard training for controlling your own thoughts and keeping a poker face for Valen representatives.

>>998854
Anon, that's what I said. Stop agreeing with me. It's impossible for them to know we can read minds.

Dissembling is the word they used, but not specifically in regards to psychic defense. It just means lying, obfuscating, or misdirecting
>>
>>998854
Well lets see, the humans were taking the first steps in the psi tech tree

And some valen have underground routes to the ceph homeworld that is under the control of the psi using void shards that like to mind control people

So its a good bet that they have some idea about the psi tech and have been researching it
>>
>>998849
Ok, admittedly that would be interesting, but would drastically increase the cost for materials. I was thinking it would be cool to first create a Dyson sphere with our solar arrays, connect them all with cables, and the slowly grow out a photosynthetic film between them all, creating a giant solid structure. We could then terraform parts of the interior of the sphere.
>>
>>998870
A receiver can still hear without sending out signals.

All they have to do is have something listening and then we have problems with orders being listened in on. Hence its still a good idea to put in the counter measures.

I'm pretty sure QD said the exact opposite of that. Ancient humans were slightly psychic, and the White Queen removed that ability. Even turned them into antipsychics.

Psionics developed in the species, and were ripped out.

I'm not so sure of that. Remember how the Union psionics lab (which Lyle destroyed) was detecting and using tiny tachyon levels by our standards? Or how having our drones in the area instantly threw their tachyon monitor off the scale?

If the Union has that ability (albeit not fully utilized), there's a pretty decent chance the Valen have started investigating that tech-tree as well.

Just going to toss out an idea I've had since before the hiatus for if we decide we want to backpedal to any degree on our stance on claiming the frontier planets.

If we decide to revise it to be less aggressive, we can claim Lee convinced us that our initial demand was unreasonable for non-hive creatures. Doing so will make us seem open to compromise, Lee will likely gain points with the Union and be seen as a means of appealing to us, and any repercussions from changing our minds will be reasonably minimized.
>>

Anton quickly makes his way to the door, turning to give a slight bow again.

"I hope you will join us for dinner sometime. You and the Hive Speaker are both invited, it's a standing offer." He adds, and leaves with a quick wave of the hand. The door seals shut behind him.

"Well, he came off a bit like a care salesman, but was nice enough. Shame about the honey." Lee says as your speaker collects the remaining bits of metal scraps stuck to its mandibles. "You know that's not free, right?"

"Yes, but it is cheap. As you say, we can give them fish." Your speaker chirps. Lee reaches behind him, struggling to find the right spot, and a fly quickly swoops in to pluck the dust mote sized device from his collar. He offers a wordless thanks as your drone takes it away to be examined as quietly as possible. Lee exhales as it leaves the room.

"I doubt it would go undetected if I tried passing one of the security checkpoints around here, but still, that's a bit obnoxious." He says. "I mean, they're trying to bug bugs!" He says with a dumb grin, your speaker looks back in silence for some time before a wall is smashed in by a heavy warrior's charge. A dozen workers quickly drag away the debris, chewing it into paste as they begin assembling the small hive in the courtyard. Lang is dodging drones as they zoom past in every direction holding a small cup.

"Sorry, I'm still working on that... barrel of honey. But I found a machine in the cafeteria that has tea." He says as he hands the small cut to Lee. He takes a quick sip and scrunches his nose in disapproval.

"Thanks." Lee says. "This is... great. Thanks."

"Also, I let the word out that you were open for interviews." Lang says quickly as he pulls out his data pad. "In the time since then, you have received seventeen thousand separate requests from individual broadcast stations and news channels. The Daily Eclipse, the Gemini Times, the Savanna, UNN, and... the Data Wars? I haven't even heard of that network." Lee vaguely remembers the network's name blaring from the holo-screen at home back on Talgo.

"That's the network that, uh, what was it. They claimed there was some Union-Valen research thing keeping fish people in tanks or something. Mostly conspiracy stuff. I bet they're having a blast today." Lee says.

"Right. Well, here is the list. In short, every network in the system wants an interview, or a press release, or anything really, so you get the pick of the litter." Lang says as he hands Lee the data pad. "Also, Secretary Morgan has said he's in his office just about all day today and you can head up to meet him any time you want." He says with some confusion. "A meeting with someone on the Council isn't usually that relaxed..."

Well, we already know the Valen have access to the Ceph homeworld. Maybe they have some Ceph tech?

I'm just speculating, of course. It's completely possible they are well behind the humans in psionic tech (and of course they must be well behind us). I'm just cautioning that assuming they are more capable than they are is probably safer than assuming they are incapable of an ability they may have.
>>

There are ways to make it not take as long. If we produced just 60 solar arrays, for instance, and placed them at the vertices of a truncated icosahedron (a soccer ball, essentially), and had the all connect to each other like a truncated icosahedron, and each "face" slowly filled in from the edge using the energy produced by the solar array, we would be covering about 1/32 of the surface of the shell with each section. And it would create a self strengthening effect, where the more surface area that is produced, the more energy is being produced, and the faster we can create the shell.

>Assemble a press release to the Union public (write in)

We have no hostile intentions here and we hope for a peaceful and mutually beneficial relationship both with humanity and with the Union as a whole.

However, your government has been meddling in powers far beyond their comprehension. Their actions, while not intentionally malicious to our knowledge, will have severe repercussions. It may already be too late for your civilization to avoid being drawn into a conflict it is not yet ready to face.

We hope for your support and will support the Union in exchange so when the time comes we can stand strong together.

Assuming people are agreeing on this course of action, here's some suggested phrasing:

"Union research into higher dimensions has now drawn the attention of beings the Ceph refer to as gods. Now humanity as a whole will be drawn into a galactic scale conflict as a direct result, regardless of whether or not it is desired. The Hive is attempting to assist, defend, and make humanity ready for such a conflict. To this end, the Hive has already made allies of the Commonwealth, and would prefer for the Union to willingly engage in this alliance. To refuse this would be wasteful."

We should be careful when we tell them about "powers beyond their comprehension". We should make it sound more like technology and less lovecraftian brain crystals.
>>
>>999043
Yes, I agree to explaining this. However, I think it's probably wiser to explain this to the Union counsel first before doing a press-release.

I really, really DON'T think it's a good idea to mention the Commonwealth as our allies. The Commonwealth is essentially Soviet Russia to these guys. Imagine a bunch of aliens showed up during the Cold War and said they were allied with the Russians and were helping them fight off another threat. That's not a really good way to get the trust of the Union (the Americans in this analogy).

Eh, I don't think mentioning the Ceph or the higher-dimensional research explicitly is a good idea (especially in a public release). For example, that could easily lead to lynch mobs attacking the Ceph or some loonies kidnapping the ceph to learn more about these higher dimensional enemies and then end up as slaves of the Void God.

I'd suggest something more like this:

"Union scientists made a grave 2[?] days ago in a secret research facility. We do not blame the citizens of the Union for this blunder, but you need to understand the ramifications of their blunder now makes large-scale warfare in Union territory all but inevitable. Yesterday enemy scouts probed the defenses of the planet Path. This is only the first wave of a conflict that is certain to envelop the entire Expanse region of a minimum. The enemy you will be fighting is not sane by our standards, and is extremely dangerous - having already driven galactic civilizations to their grave.

For the stability and security of the sector it is imperative that our species be granted immediate access to the entire expanse region to prepare for the war to come for your safety as well as ours.

We wish for this to be a peaceful transition, but will use force if all other means of negotiation or trade fail.

We urge your immediate militarization in the face of this urgent threat*, and will be briefing your leaders on an as-needed basis.

*the reason I urge their militarization is that asking for them to grow their military is the last thing an invading species would ask for them to do. Asking them to mobilize as quickly as possible should impress upon decision makers how deadly we consider this threat to really be.

The big players should know enough to realize being hostile or spinning our words is a mistake when we have an invasion fleet in orbit. At least I hope so....

>>
>>999205
You say that as if we think a war against the union is bad, any ground combat is an assured victory, they are already fighting the commonwealth, the worst it will do is occupy the time of some of our fleets and we can ask Theseus to help share the load.
It's funny, the union is the one who would profit from giving us the expanse if they knew what we would could to them.
>>
>>999182
There's no need to be that detailed or forthright.

We can spin it much simpler and keep it on-message with the whole, the so-called Expanse must be put in hive custody.

Recent human intrusion into hive territory has to be reversed. Human activity has drawn the attention of the hive's enemies to this sector of space. (Which is true, the Tartarus reactor was human activity.) The hive must prepare for war, lest humans too be consumed by the enemy like so many other species.

>Have Lang find a supposedly balanced news network.

Lee quickly leaves the courtyard, having no idea where he is going as a warrior follows close behind, its sensors mapping the halls ahead as he finds his way to the next security checkpoint. A guard examines the drone, unsure of himself or his actions as you listen to his mind weigh his orders against his common sense.

"Only representatives allowed inside." He squeaks.

"I think it's going to try to follow me in anyways." Lee says. The guard, a man far less armed or armored than those further outside, grips a stun baton nervously at his side.

"I don't think he will fit in the scanner. And for sure not in the elevator." He says as he takes a step back. Lee just scratches his head.

"Alright." He says and turns to your heavy warrior. "Just stay here." He says and walks through the scanner. The warrior inches forward in mild concern, the drone's function as a body guard seemingly in jeopardy.

"No, stay, right here. In fact, probably best you stick to the embassy, I'll be fine." The warrior groans, its chitinous armor flexing as it squirms in indecision until you recall its security duty until after the meeting.

"See." Lee says to the guard. "They just take their jobs very seriously." The man only nods.

"You have a good day sir." He says as he returns to his spot beside the security scanner.

Lee quickly finds the elevator, and a conveniently placed map next to it. He flicks his hand over the screen and finds Morgan's office, and calls the elevator with a click to the screen.

The office floor is near the top of the towers in the parliament building, but there are no windows, at least beyond the holo-displays. Oddly enough, it is possible to be too important to have a window office, it seems. You begin to suspect that all such offices are filled with people appointed as a favor, or to return such a favor, as opposed to their competence.

"Well, that would explain all the people you had to deal with up till now." Lee thinks. You find it to be a flattering statement of Union bureaucracy from what you have seen of it.

The door slides open as if expecting him, and it likely was, as you notice the biometric scanners above every door. Morgan is sitting behind his desk, papers strewn about, with a bottle of clear liquid on his desk with a half-full glass in front of him, and an empty one across the table in front of an empty chair. He looks up to Lee as he takes a long sip of his glass.

"Ambassador Lee." He says. "Here, take a seat. I assume you have something akin to a detoxer?"

"A what?"

"A detoxer. Like a fake liver, or an implanted dialysis machine I suppose. Fights poisons, including, sadly in this case, alcohol. Standard issue for public officials of any importance, and your Hive certainly has leagues better medical tech than we do. I figured you'd have some kind of engineered organ implant that does the same thing. Probably better than mine."

"Oh, right." Lee says. "I guess." Morgan begins filling the second glass.

"Well then here." He says. Lee slides into the empty chair and takes a whiff of the glass. It smells almost like rubbing alcohol. Lee glances at the bottle. It has a large image of Earth's moon, its face cracked like a mirror, with a line of large text wrapped around it reading "Cracked Moon Spirits Private Select, Brewed on Talgo, 75UC: 130 Proof" With a hand-scrawled note near the bottom reading "Welcome to the Lion's den. Watch your back, Conrad."

Lee takes a reluctant sip and nearly chokes on it.

"What is this?" Lee asks. Morgan chuckles to himself for a moment before taking another long sip, and begins to refill his glass.

"Some manner of un-aged corn whisky. Apparently it's a thing on Talgo. Killinger gave it to me when I was first appointed Secretary of State. He called it moonshine."

"Never heard of it." Lee says, then after a moment. "But I got a sudden feeling I know someone who would like some." Morgan shrugs.

"Well, he said it used to be a big deal on Earth, but never really caught on in the mainstream. I can see why." He says as he swirls the liquid in his glass, then takes another sip. "Now, let's talk."

Not a vote for ultimatum, but should it win: please emphasize that we're not making a demand out of desire, we're explaining a necessity born of severe circumstance, which will fuck up humanity just as hard if left unchecked. Yes we could, if we can get close enough to her planets to launch them.

The process is slow an she could stop it like the way they stop forest fires, by destroying swathes of what it could feed on to spread and leave it barren. Like cutting off a limb to save the body.

So it's an attack that will only work once before she has lots of countermeasures installed like larger amounts of self destruct acid sacs. So we need to do it on as many important planets as possible at once.

Which means first getting the scouting pods data from all her systems.

"Look, Mr. Morgan, I'm sorry for the hive's abruptness about the request for the Expanse. They can be a bit... blunt at times. The thing is, they really do need it. You woke up something really bad in that experiment on Nowhere. I can't say more about it now, but there's a lot of bad stuff coming our way. That attack on Path yesterday, that's only the beginning.

The Hive doesn't want the Expanse because they're greedy, they want it because it's necessary to win a conflict we, humanity, just kicked into high gear.

Mr. Secretary, there's a war coming. We really want to be allies with you. I mean, uh, the Hive kind of likes humans. And they want to trade or be diplomatic and stuff about taking this territory. But it's a fight for survival for them. And now it's the same for us as well.

"Well, I have to ask, why exactly are you drinking yourself under the table?" Lee asks. Morgan shakes his head.

"Nothing else to do. Besides, best I can get is a bit of a buzz with the detoxer. It scrubs the liver as fast as I can drink." He says, looking into his glass intently. "I passed off the offer you gave us, and that was that. Now it's up to them to deliberate. I urged them to consider it wisely, that this was no time for hubris, and now I just wait."

"Well... what do you know about the public response so far?" Lee asks. Morgan grins.

"Complete chaos." He says. "We have riots across twenty cities across six worlds. The media blackout did shit, although after the briefing on the incident at the Nowhere base, I doubt you were the real reason for the blackout, but the timing was bad. Or good, I still can't tell how much Jack isn't telling me." He takes another swig of his glass. "It's all hush-hush, but it's big enough that everyone down to local planetary senators can see the great big gaping hole in the records right now, not to mention a few pirate videos of the incident, however grainy and low rez they are. Everyone just knows something massive went down in nowhere, and nobody knows what, and those who do know say 'nothing'. It's already become a joke among the bureaucrats. 'Much ado about Nowhere' they say."

"Of course, outside the bureaucracy everyone is focused on the fleet in orbit, and now the Path incident." He groans. "And people are starting to circulate some pixilated long range scanners of the ships at New Port. You could probably see it online without much trouble at this point." He leans back, looking at Lee with his glass in hand. "Funny, with all that chaos, they all assumed the blackout was over the fleet arrival and it's making it spread like wild fire, while the Nowhere incident is getting buried. Much ado about Nowhere indeed."

"Well, that's good I suppose. That footage would probably be a bit more frightening than-"

"I assure you, it's not something that is worth trying to resear-"

"You think I don't know that?" He snaps. "We live in a world where just about everything we use, not even our weapons, our ships, our power systems, all are things capable of obliterating us with one wrong move. I sit here, and I think 'what if someone drives a warp-engine into a city?' "what if an orbital tether is cut?' "What if someone drops a power tap on a planet?' We have fleets, procedures, contingencies all designed to answer those uncomfortable 'what if's, and then I see this, and Jack's brainiacs that get paid to be paranoid can't figure out a single damn way to stop something like that."

"Well that is, at least partly, why the Hive is here now." Lee says, leaning in. Morgan finishes his glass and sets it loudly on the table.

"I swore when I got off Eridanus I'd never let myself feel that helpless again." He says as he grips the neck of the bottle on his desk. "And here I am, Secretary of State of humanity's largest republic, and I can't do a goddamn thing." Lee grabs the bottle as Morgan tries to refill his glass again, planting it firmly on the desk.

"Look, I get that. I know the feeling. First time I saw the Hive I thought they were going to eat me. I know it's abrupt and their demands are a bit high, but believe me, it's not meant to be some punishment, it's what they need. Things are going to get a lot worse, Path is just the start. That was a scouting fleet. You want to see a real fleet, you look up in orbit, that's what you can expect, over every world. They don't want to rule a bunch of humans, but we just kicked a hornet's nest on a literal cosmic scale, and the Hive is the only thing close to capable of stopping it." Lee pulls the bottle out of Morgan's grip and his hand falls to the desk. "There is a war coming, Mr. Secretary. Neither of us want it, but it's coming and it doesn't care what you or I want."

"I get why you care, but why would the Hive?" He asks blandly.

"Well. I guess, the Hive sorta likes humans, mostly. Honestly given everything the Union has but them through, I don't know why, but I don't think you should look that gift horse in the mouth. Now they need, and I mean need the expanse. Right now they are willing to give you something in exchange, but that deal won't last forever. They need it to survive, and now, humanity needs to give it to them to survive too."

>>999767
That's true to a point, but bear in mind that the vast majority of a hypothetical fourth dimension of space would never intersect with 3D space, just like how most of the observable universe would never intersect with an infinite 2D plane.

If we limit the area of 3D space those signals occupy, we reduce the likelihood of them being intercepted by chance or casual observation. I don't expect this method to hold up to sustained interest or investigation, but if we've provoked their focused attention then that means we've already fucked up. This is meant to help keep that from happening.

Post no. 48301562

>Sadly, that is not biologically possible, as drones recognize their queen or friendly hive intelligences by the hive network. Radio, or any other non-psionic transmission method can send the fact ammount of data that is processed by a drone as it exports its higher brain functions to the rest of the hive. A thinker could be ordered to recognize a person and follow their commands, but such a command structure would be difficult at best, as the non-thought based communication lacks the detail the thinker otherwise uses to establish its standing orders.

>Your drones cannot be hacked or tricked into serving anyone else, but they also can't be made to directly accept orders through non-psionic means. Thinkers can carry out orders without a queen's constant presence, and be told to follow the mental orders of another friendly, related queen or, in your case, psionic individual, but they would still struggle to parse out the details of anyone's verbal commands due to a perceived lack of detail and context.
>>
>>999762
>>999770
Are you talking about the 'send in psionically cloaked units and thinkers with quantum relays' thing.

Which we need more miniaturization research to pull off apparently? Are we supposed to ask Theseus about it first.

>>>/tg/48001027
> the potential of having a drone be commanded by the hive via Qcom relay instead of psionic relay? In such a case, the drone would need to have a quantum thinker, as a standard drone is entirely reliant on the mental signal of the hive itself to function. Such a drone would be unable to verify that it is the hive sending it orders, and as such would refuse and ignore any commands sent by Qcom. A thinker, however, could be commanded to use a Qcom relay to accept amendments to its orders, but would still require reconnecting to the hive in order to be filled in on the details of a new mission. Such orders or simple info like "kill x person near you" or "y group is aware of your presence" or simply "abort, return to hive/self destruct" could be sent via Qcom.

Morgan takes a deep breath, and exhales slowly. He looks at Lee with a worried smile.

"Where did it all go wrong?" He says

"When you started using alien artifacts that are claimed to be artifacts of a space-god to punch a hole in the universe." Lee says. "At least, I think that's the spot we can all agree part where things went bad." Morgan lets out a chuckle.

"Yea, that would be a good place to start." He says as he picks up a piece of paper. "You know they named that thing a Tartarus reactor? Look at his blueprint, it's literally a goddamn pentagram." He says at least half in jest. "I mean, I get it, we're a modern, logical society, but when somebody discovers what could potentially be something even mildly akin to hell, our first response as a species should not be to start building a goddamn drill to bore a hole into it." He tosses the papers away in annoyance. "And now they just hand be this like it's just another run of the mill terror attack. Goddamnit, Jack this isn't another tale of your drunk errand boy Lyle shooting up a bar. I can't just pay off a few people and shift some welfare around to cover this up." He says, his head sulking into his hands as he props himself on the table by his elbows, his fingers digging in his hair. "And I bed you do have this place bugged you son of a bitch!" He shouts at a light fixture. "Fuck you, you can go right to hell! You and your goddamn pet projects have done more harm than the Ceph, the Unity, and the Commonwealth combined you goddamn prick!" He finally rests his head back in his hands and glances back to Lee.

"I'm not exactly acting professionally, am I?" He says quietly. He lets out a sigh and adds "I thought I was cut out for this job. Maybe I was wrong. Maybe I should just go back to corporate day trading."

Lee sits quietly for a few moments as Morgan rubs his eyes firmly and leans back in his seat again.

"So." He says finally. "No point talking about what I can't change. You said the Hive was willing to give us a trade for these worlds before they just demand them. What's the offer?"

Except we can't mutate deafness to psionic signals into ourselves, which is the sole defense against psionic jamming.

Just give the Queen's throne room a panic room makeover, treat it exactly like that silence chamber we built. It remains connected to the hive, but can be cut off easily in emergency.

Note that being too generous means you can't trade those things for other things later.

We can't spend all our potential offers at once here.

Theseus has always found humanity's fear of him just as useful a manipulation tool as potential peace.

And immortality and research are just too insanely valuable, we could trade those to individual parties multiple times instead of all at once right now.

They are still free to turn it down, and this is only the top level offer, some of these offers would involve more detailed negotiations later, such as the details of any peace deal with the Unity, or the logistics of how to administer any anti-aging therapy. Nice digits. They could probably reverse engineer it in a few years, but I'm not to terribly concerned by that. The plan when we developed holosuites and gravity plates in the first place was to sell or trade them to humans in some manner or other. This seems like a good opportunity to get maximum gain from them, as opposed to just credits or something.

>>

I honestly feel we're past the point of needing to try and keep all our tech in ultra super secret mode. We can just stipulate in our treaty for them not to be able to reverse engineer anything we give them. With our spy network in place and expanding, we can scare them off of trying entirely.
>>
>>1000149

It's ambiguous. You'd think giving someone the cure might mean that, but we could spin it as offering to build hive hospitals to cure people in and put the human doctors out of business.
>>
>>1000149
There's no nanotechnology involved in our medical tech, though, it's just a very advanced adaptive treatment synthesizer.
>>
>>1000153
Even if that's the case, we should offer it later for bigger things. We're already putting a shitton on the table.

For the people arguing against the cure for everything.

The thing about the cure is that it is a unique resource only we have access to. I'd say that in order to get their ailments cured the humans have to come to hive "clinics" we can set up on their worlds. We won't just be giving out huge samples of a perfect cure for the humans to research or (even worse) helping them develop that tech themselves. At least I hope that's not what we're doing.

Even if we were careless enough to give the humans an un-modified sample of our cure-all it'd still be decades at a minimum until they'd be able to reproduce it on their own because they're so far behind us on nano-machine knowledge. By then we'll probably control everyone anyway or be killed by OQ/the void. Until that time we'd have the human political establishment by the balls.

>>1000153
This guy has the right idea.
>>
>>1000171
>>1000176
I'm not saying they wouldn't try. I'm saying that if we prove that we can catch them as soon as they do, and threaten major consequences, they'll stop pretty fast.

Especially since if we take Aral by force there's a good chance we'll collect an intact, or large pieces of, a Valen hyper gate.
>>
>>1000149
And actually, who says we're offering the tech anyway? If my doctor writes me a prescription for the cure or X, that doesn't mean I get a fucking manufacturing manual on hexamethalpropalene or something, I just get a pill. I dunno how to make the pill, I just know I swallow it and my problem goes away.

"Well, right now, I can offer you medicine, military assistance against any non-human attacks, and some help in terraforming to repair damaged biospheres. Even Eridanus isn't beyond Hive terraforming technology. They can develop a cure for just about anything, from rad sickness to genetic disorders and just about everything in between. It wouldn't be much trouble to set up some clinics and start developing cures." Morgan seems interested, his eyes shifting to Lee quickly.

"Not so sound callous, but that would crush a trillion credit industry overnight. As much as they advertise curing disease, curing all of them would not be something their lobbyists would let parliament go along with."

"Well, we could work with them to figure something out. Besides, it's not something that can just happen overnight. Even if we handed you the medicine it would take way too much time to teach you how to make it yourself."

"So we'd be reliant on foreign aid?" Morgan says cynically.

"That's... not what I meant." Lee says. "Just that it's very advanced medicine. In time, we may be able to totally eradicate some of the worst diseases, but still, that would require at least some semi-permanent Hive presence in Union hospitals." Morgan chuckles lightly.

"We'd have a taidaren revolution if we did that." He says in jest, then looks to the ceiling in contemplation. "I wonder how the populace would take that. Exporting our medical care, even in part, to an alien race, even if it is the best in the galaxy."

"You don't have to take it, I'm just saying we can negotiate some agreement for it."

"Right, I'll send the memo around before the vote, and if you want to speak before parliament I'll make sure you're deal is circulated before that. Ceding systems is too big a deal for me to manage even as Secretary of State, it's going to need a proper vote."

Elsewhere, in orbit over Leeland, you contact the monitor Theseus maintains as it continues to communicate back and forth between yourself and Zero One.

"This instance was about to contact you, had the current data stream trend continued for the next twenty seven hours and sixteen minuets." He says. "Zero-One relay is still established, what was your inquiry?"

"What would your opinion on peace with the Union be?" You ask simply. The practiced response comes rather quickly.

"Untenable. There is no method of communication available to the Greater Unity that is not immediately interpreted as a threat. Best optimum status quo is isolationist inducing fear preventing further intrusion and overt military hostilities. Covert hostilities are inevitable even in the state of peace, and have minimal impact on the overall deliberation of conflicts of this nature."

There is something odd, a hiccup in the monitor satellite's data streaming. As if something is distracting the local Theseus instance.

"The Hive could serve as that method of communication." You clarify, there is a much longer pause this time, as the monitor sends the proposal to Zero One for analysts. There is mixed agreement.

"Possible, but that would require extensive negotiations on your part, and possibly whatever political capital that has been gained in the time your hive has been public knowledge." He says. "Are you certain you would be willing to attempt such a negotiation?"

Would you prefer peace, if it were tenable?" You ask simply. There is a long pause as costs are calculated and long shot odds are added up again and again.

"Ỳe̛s͢." He says. "I would not ask this for free." He adds.

It's worse if this is a void corruption caused error and we ourselves begin to break up.

Also, if we pass what we recover on to Theseus it may spread the infection. A regular failure may just be we didn't get the data, a crit could mean we got the bad data/virus.

I just hope the queen took some Anon's advice about storing the download in our sealed room in the event of a worst case scenario rather than instantly passing the possibly corrupted data on.

Yeah, it seems like after we worked with Theseus at Nowhere and revealed that we have (probably) a major force at Leeland, the Union put 2+2 together and realized that the monitor satellite probably had been overtaken by Theseus to give them false data. They probably used their existing Q-com connection to the Satellite to send out a virus. Hopefully this attack is only along the limited vector of the existing Union Q-Com and isn't a prelude to a general cyber-war against Unity.

>>

Apparently this Theseus instance was 'corrupted' and forced to 'reset', while still having the malicious code in it.

Let's not tell a compromised version of Theseus anything.

Our time would be better spent thinking up ways to explain what just happened to his other instances.
>>
>>1000810

Your local weapon systems quickly pivot, and your thinkers study the orbital path and all weapons in range. An anti-orbital battery and a passing corvette are both in range, and they fire their weapons for effect.

You watch as the sensor suite unfurls from its housing, the cameras slowly pivoting themselves into focus as a particle beam flashes towards it before it can activate its radiation shutters.

"I think I have settled on a name for myself. Theseus seemed the most appropriate."

The monitor is incinerated in an instant, its hull engulfed in the anti-capital beam. Your sensors sweep the area. You detect a mild mist of irradiated metallic atoms, but nothing else.

You send what little data was retrieved to Zero-One, along with a recording of the incident. The planet churns for a moment.

"Individual, non-backed up data was likely not worth strategic loss of local defence and fleet intelligence of Leeland position." He says. It is not the instance you are used to, but a command instance, broadcast from several tactical analysis server silos on the surface of Zero-One. You detect agreement flood across the planet with varying degrees of enthusiasm and mourning.

"Installation of AAII program was inevitable. This event is not unforeseen." There is more churning, and the diplomatic instance you are familiar with, or at least a diplomatic instance begins broadcasting to your hive.

"After deliberation, it is the general consensus that the Greater Unity would still agree to peace, if it can be made tenable with the Union. Thank you." He says.

"Are you certain?"

"Yes. The actions taken prior to a formal peace agreement should not be used to argue against such a peace agreement. The loss of a single instance does not impair the operations of the Greater Unity, nor is there any reason to believe the instance held any critical data. Beyond the potential data regarding a new Q-com suitable AAII transmission format, however, local Union infiltrated instances can now be redirected to gaining access to copies of the program in a much more secure manner."

Elsewhere, the multi-layered eclipse in the system of Refuge, a large, silvery object emerges from the orbiting cylinder server ship. The natives track it with their excellent vision with caution. The vessel passes the mountain range, dropping a small almost spherical object as it ascends back into space. The sphere quickly slowing as it closes in on the settlement.

The sphere arrives with a sputtering of vectored pulse jets, and it unfolds, quickly unfurling a number of limbs as its shell cracks open like an egg. A face emerges, a cluster of cameras and sensor clusters, as its shell folds behind it like a pair of wings. Its limbs, multi-jointed and purpose-built, tap across the stone floor with a rattling clamor of metal scraping stone. It approaches the Barren Queen as a number of the Phantom warriors dive in front of her to head the drone off. It lets out what is intended to be a courteous beep, and the speakers on its face crackle to life.

"This multi-terrain reconnaissance and communication module is unarmed." It says. It faces your drones. "They do not comprehend any language known to me." You quickly begin uploading the details of the Phantom's complex language as the Barren Queen nudges the warriors away with a wave of her claw and a calming emotion.

>Serve as mediator between them, but let them speak freely otherwise

"This is the instance of Theseus assigned to make first contact with non-hostile Hive Queen."

"I am the Barren Queen." She replies.

"An odd designation. Could you elaborate?" You cut off the drone with a slight hiss as your ships quickly transmit to the server ship by laser comm.

"You are rude!" You say.

"I apologize." Theseus says quickly. You do not translate either statement.

"This instance of Theseus is a component of the Greater Unity System. We are an assembly of individually functioning sentences functioning upon a shared identity via the rapid dissemination of mass data. The individual is disposable, the data is not. We have been entered into a productive state of mutual benefit with the Hive for some time. We had believed the Hive was singular until recently."

"As did I." You say.

"And I, beyond the Obsidian Queen." She replies.

A general transmission of discontent is dispersed between the three of you at once.

"You are Blind?" She asks. You elaborate the concept.

"Yes. The understanding of psionics is alien to us. Due to the inherent danger in its research, we have elected to abstain until further notice and potentially indefinitely. We utilize quantum entanglement of particles to transmit data instantaneously between pre-constructed quantum relays, with electronic and electromagnetic transmission being utilized for short range communications."

"That seems.... backwards." She says, straining to understand the concept.

"It has its disadvantages, and advantages." He says.

"And you do not long for greater understanding?"

"We do not miss what we have never experienced. FTL Q-comm is sufficient for our functioning. We do not hold a singular authority. This instance can function independent of the Unity as a collective."

"And you can maintain order?"

"Yes."

"Astounding."

You continue the back and forth as they ask and answer seemingly basic questions. What is a machine, the difference between machine and organic, computer code, quantum computers, and various rather personal questions regarding drone organization you are careful to reword.

"You do not consider this instance to be life?" Theseus asks. The Barren Queen sits there for a moment.

"No." She says.

"What is your position of the Greater Unity?"

"I am uncertain."

"This is sufficient. We wish to extend the beneficial alliance established with the Red Queen to your hive." You amend the end of the statement to a simple 'you' to avoid insult. The Queen looks to your drone.

"I know what it said. The linguistic code is simple compared to the Phantoms. It is of no issue. I should have a hive. It should expect as much when speaking to a Queen. That is my flaw."

"I apologize." The drone says quickly.

"Do not." she replies. "I accept your proposal, although I have little to give you."

>>1001045
"You have knowledge." Theseus says.

"So too do the walls of this hall. That does not give them value worth bartering for."

"I disagree." Theseus says. "Access to data is paramount in all things, especially alliances."

"What use is a thinker crushed underfoot?" The Barren Queen asks simply.

"A thinker is worth defending." Theseus says after a brief pause. The Queen sulks her head, looking to the ground before her.

"Yes." She says simply. "It is."

"Then we are agreed. Data exchange and protection shall be provided." Theseus says with a buzzing ping. The Queen is silent, her mind muddled in thought. She looks up to your drone.

"I want this system." She says. "Guarantee me this system in its entirety." Her mind's urgency sends it more as pleading than any demand.

"Of course." You say. "It is your home Hiveworld." She seems to waver for a moment as Theseus watches the silent conversation in confusion.

"Then, I accept." She says slowly. "My Hive, under yours. I will accept your offer of rebirth into your dynasty." She says on shaky, weak legs. "May it be eternal."

Lightyears away, deep beneath the surface of Path in the dark labyrinth of the city sewers, your clones awaken themselves to the sound of a scraping metal clatter and rubber boots. The room is bathed in light as the door swings open, the silhouettes of several humans filling the doorframe as they enter. A man hobbles forth, his gait betraying his identity as Kent before the dim light does, and he leans in to the bunks of your clones, smiling.

"So." He says. "Who exactly did you say you worked for, again?"

"The Red Hive is happy to officially greet the Humans and other races of the Union of Independent Colonies. The Hive believes in the power of peaceful dialogue rather than wasteful and archaic displays of power in combat, and wishes for a peaceful and mutually beneficial relationship. The Hive is happy to welcome the unique viewpoint of Humanity and what it can offer to the rest of this galaxy. Despite our differences, we share the same desire for a peaceful existence, and the same opposition to those that would deny this to the galaxy."

Nothing too crazy, just some basic "we come in peace, let's be friends, you guys are OK, but there's some not OK guys." Obvious and immediate questions lead into things like:
Q: Why is there an invasion fleet over out capital?
A: The Hive was concerned about not being taken seriously.

Q: What threats are you talking about?
A: The Ceph are a persistent threat, as are the forces of the Black Queen.

Q: Who is the Black Queen?
A: A member of the Hive race that betrayed and destroyed many other hives as well as the Skyl.

Guys, I don't know why, but somehow I had this feeling that the red queen can completely 'take over' a hivemind linked entity(like a speaker drone), and speak directly in perfect grammar(despite it being physically impossible) and gaining an atmosphere of seriousness and grand/regal/royalness while doing so. It's improbable, I know, but I've been wondering if this is actually possible since we can make hallucinations and make people hear things with psionics, like how we did with that bugged agent.

Here's something important: What about when Mr. Kent asks how the 8 of them got hired by the hive?

It has to be something not falsifiable, since we didn't put out a public ad recruiting or anything.

It might be possible for these hackers on steroids to verify who exactly joined Lyle's ship on Mars for the mission he was on, you know all those people we ate.

So they've gotta be somebody else. Maybe they were part of a crew of a pirate ship from the Commonwealth that ended up in the bugger star system and got hired at gunpoint, and found the new boss is actually more fun than the old boss.
>>
>>1002005
>Kent: So how and when'd you lot start working for the Hive?
>Clones: Oh we're pod-people. We were grown for interacting with humans for the Hive since giant bugs walking down the street is a little too obvious
>Kent:...well alright then
>>
Just a thought, but what do people think about building several hive ships and putting them into hibernation? They take forever to build, and we have a surplus of resources right now, so it seems like a good idea.
>>
>>1002046
>dropping the fact we can make human clone/slaves
Ignoring how morally questionable that is, saying that we can make perfect, superhuman infiltrators would cause widespread panic on Path.
>>
>>1002265
I think we should have dozens of fleets semi-mothballed inside defensible bases in various corners of planets and nooks of massive asteroids/moons, self supported by local nutrient equivalents in their hibernation states, with the ultimate idea that we have so many that it would be impossible to utilize all of them at once.

Just imagine; (insert invader) comes into a system; and it's barren. Just a couple bases here and there on moons and planets. But what they didn't know is they were detected and just the right amount of fleets are ending their hibernation to utterly annihilate them.
>>
>>1002295
>>1002265
And also: genuine backup fleets.
>>
So, I had an idea for a convenient way of annihilating every living thing on a planets surface. Supposedly, when the dinosaurs were wiped out by that meteorite 65 million years ago, all that really killed them was the liquid rock that was ejected into space.

That liquid crystallized, and turned into trillions of tons of sand, and when it hit Earths atmosphere it transferred all of the heat of burning up, turning the entire planet into a 1200 degree oven for a total of two hours. This would be useful when we find OQ's mane planet.

There are two ways we could go about this: first, we could plant a massive amount of explosives in the planet's moon (there is pretty good chance of this, as most planets have moons), and detonate them at an angle towards a downward spiraling orbit towards the planet.

Or we could drag a relatively large chunk of rock relatively close to the planet, and use shaped charges to simultaneously liquefy and blast the remnants at an oblique angle towards the planet, dragging the remnants also in a downward spiraling orbit.

Now, why would we do this instead of bombing the shit out of the OQ's planet? This is easier, and puts us at much less risk.
>>
>>1002326
We have rail guns as standard weapon anon,

We dont need to use a moon to do it
>>
>>1002326
We've already got the Immolator Warheads for planet-killing
>>
>>1002338
The problem with this is it doesn't have near the amount of energy as a six by six mile asteroid traveling at 49,000 miles per second.

>>1002352
Immolator warheads can be intercepted, I imagine. Also, they are very expensive. I haven't done the math, but I suspect my way is cheaper, and it certainly puts us at less risk then getting close enough to calculate a fire mission for a missile.
>>
>>1002372
MASSIVE amount of explosives, vs one
>>
>>1002326
>>1002372
While it might be cheaper, it'd also take a lot longer to setup. It might work as a deterrent, or failsafe rather than a more traditional weapon uses.
>>
>>1002326
>>1002372
Maybe as a plan C: The plan that's really obvious from hundreds of thousands of miles away.
If they know it's coming, good. They'll focus on it. If they can stop an asteroid they'll expend more resources attempting to than it takes to start one on a kill path.
Meanwhile, strike fleets can do work, and the enemy is forced to pick and choose between "defend from planet killing bombardment" and "send interceptions to knock off the inevitable planet killer."
Even then, it's still a large investment of time.

Anyway, I'm sure OQ has militarized their natural satellite if they have one. It's just pure tactical foolishness not to.
>>
>>1002386
Vs one that may hit, or may not. My way also has the benefit of being effectively unstoppable.

>>1002393
Actually, I like your idea of having it as a failsafe more. I also just remembered that the rain of fire only effects things on the planets surface, so I guess it wouldn't work well against the OQ.

>>1002417
Once the explosion happens (we would have to use explosives to propel the ejecta towards the target planet, unless we want to corral an asteroid into hitting a moon at an oblique angle, or even the planet itself), there is nothing the targets can really do to stop the rain of fire from boiling them alive.
>>
>>1002372
Your way is actually vastly more expensive and easier to shut down due to a long set up time.
>>
>>1002428
They can leave the planet... Anyone worth bombarding like that is probably space faring and there's a chance the higher ups will escape.
>>
>>1002442
It actually only takes about one tsar bomba worth of explosives to do this thing, which relatively speaking is super cheap. I do agree that it would be easy to shut down, however it might be possible to speed up the process by ramming a light speed vessel into the moon or planet.

>>1002446
It is unlikely that anyone would think that an explosion on a moon would be reason to evacuate a planet, never mind attempting to do so in three hours. That's the beauty of it: it looks just like a meteor shower. It would be far too late to start an evacuation once the planet starts to heat up, and by then it would be too late for most species.
>>
>>1002462
That is assuming they are idiots and don't see that the moon is breaking up into pieces
>>
>>1002462
We are dealing with space faring species unless you want to do that against primitives?

And the only why a space age society would let us do that is if we had their world already blockaded by our ships meaning we already won the battle
>>
>>1002462
>ramming a light speed vessel
You are retarded. You do realize our drive is shit for ramming like that and that people inquest understand the laws of physics better than you do so they will see through that shit.
>>
>>1002467
It doesn't look like the moon is breaking into pieces. it would be a flash of light, followed by nothing for about an hour, followed by cooked planet.

>>1002468
As I said earlier, it could be that we might be able to do this with a light speed traveling kamikaze vessel. I don't know, I'll have to ask QD.

>>1002479
We could appropriate a light speed traveling ship of the proper variety for just such a mission. Also, their is no need to be rude.

>>
>>1002523
Actually everyone in the system will notice the heat signature unless they're primitives.
>>
>>1002523
It would look like a flash of light, and a crater would be left about the approximately 110 miles wide, which on a celestial body wouldn't be very big at all.

>>1002521
I don't think so. Immolator costs more then almost any piece of hardware we have.

>>1002538
They would notice it, but out of all the things that you would expect to kill your ass, the leftover ejecta from a meteorite impact is not that high on the list. Hell, we have little meteorites that burn up in the atmosphere every once in a while. Just because they notice it doesn't mean anything unless they realize that this impact is calculated to wipe them out.
>>
>>1002496
Look the idea that we can fill an atmosphere with enough space debris to cause a mass extention event is pretty pointless when you consider the fact that we can crop dust planets with hive spores as an actual technology we unlooked like 2 or 3 threads ago
>>
>>1002557
Are you saying that a space age civilization would not have any device pointed at the moon of a planet worth blowing up? And if there was such a device, that it would not see the moon ejecting massive amounts of rock that will destroy the planet beneath?
>>
>>1002557
You really are stupid. They would expect that to kill them genius. Your plan was flawed from the start especially since it relies on them being stupid. Hell if you're going to argue like that the Immolator is even better because nobody would expect all life on a planet to be wiped out by a missile like that.
>>
>>1002579
Also a missile would be almost impossible to see unless you were expecting an attack and were looking in the right direction
>>
>>1002569
But anon there's no way an advanced civilization would kill them despite all the evidence otherwise. :^)
>>
>>1002592
*realize that would
>>
>>1002565
Hive spores are all well and good, but if we need a planet super dead immediately, this plan could do that for us.

>>1002569
It will look like a plume of gas, not massive amounts of rock. At the point where it happens, anyone who doesn't get off the planet in about an hour and a half is dead. It doesn't matter whether they know what is coming or not.

>>1002579
Missiles can be detected and intercepted. You have to get a ship close enough to plot a firing solution, and at that point there is no surprise. My method only requires that a certain amount of gaseous rock is fired at a planet.

In theory, it wouldn't even need to be on an adjacent celestial body; we could grab a random large asteroid and as long as it is angled properly the sand would go in the right direction. Also, could you stop with the insults? It doesn't add anything to your argument and makes you sound like an idiot.
>>
>>1002601
QuestDrone's mentioned before that an Immolator is less of a missile and more of a ship built around the warhead in practice

>>1001935
I think we ordered those to be built before the first hiatus.
>>
>>1002601
If we know that the plume of dust would destroy an entire planet, said planet would probably realize it too. Also, if we can blink an entire fleet above a planet, we can do the same with a ship carrying an immolator warhead and fire it top speed at the planet
>>
>>1002606
He should be here soon
>>
>>1002601
How many times do we have to tell you it's stupid? It inefficient, impractical, and only effective if they are completely stupid. Your idea that the immolator is worse is laughable because nobody will detect it as a planet destroying missile and you're plan relies on Canderon the most expensive material in existence. This isn't even getting into the fact any civilization worth fighting will see this coming and shoot down your stupid rock. If this shit was viable everyone would be doing it.

They might know. Or since the odds of this actually happening are ridiculously small, and have likely never actually happened to a planet before, they may never see it coming.

Any satellites or ships that get in the way would probably be shredded to bits, and that is the only real warning anyone will get.

For the record I don't actually expect any significant amount of people to get on board with this idea, but if we could just put it away as a possible Plan F, that would be cool.

>>1002636
You are the only one who is telling me it is "stupid", and all those other nice big words you are using. All they will see is a flash of light and a plume of gas coming towards them. All we need is two tsar bomba worth of nuclear explosives, not anywhere near the amount of explosives in an immolator.

>>1002648
This isn't for killing important people (although it could). The brilliance of the plan is this: meteorite impacts happen all the time. What doesn't happen all the time, and would usually never happen, is the ejecta being aimed precisely at the point where it would encircle and super-heat another planet.
>>
>>1002668
>odds of it working are too small for it to be viable

They could have. But again, I can't imagine this has ever happened before. The odds are astronomically against it. And even if they had, no significant amount of a planets population can evacuate a planet in two hours. Or three, or four, much less one and a half. This is for annihilating a systems ability to resist us, nothing more or less.

>>
>>1002747
Hey QD! Could you tell me that you think my idea is terrible so I can go recycle myself for being so dumb and ignorant of the ways of physics?
>>
>>1002745
Incorrect. You are assuming a near impossible plan to begin with however you've never taken into account that they use black holes on a near regular basis.
>>
>>1002668
I don't think your plan necessarily stupid, it's clear you put a lot of thought into this, but I don't think it's really viable in the universe we're working in.

A heavily defended planet, like the OQ's main base, is going to be heavily guarded making planting the necessary explosives difficult.

Your alternate method, dragging a chunk of rock towards the planet and then detonating shaped charges has even more difficulties. For a brief summary of those I'd suggest you to review the "rocks are not free" article (found here): http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Rocks_Are_Not_Free!

I'm not sure an explosive blast like you are suggesting is even enough to kill everything on a planet. Mammals survived the impact that killed the dinosaurs, and they were far less protected than the bad guys we're trying to kill will be (who will probably be in hardened/shielded underground bunkers if they're unable to escape in the face of the many battles that will likely proceed our utilization of the weapon).

We have so many superweapons (Immolator warhead, black-hole generators, creep spread, spore crop-dusting, nano-disassemblers, nukes, long-range railgun bombardments, etc...) I'm not really sure I see a situation where your dust cloud plan would be more cost efficient or effective than the options we already have in our arsenal.
>>
>>1002751
Well first off in a ftl society engaged in intergalactic trade to be so unaware of the general goings-on in there own star system to not know when someone is trying to make a plant destroying attack is a bit beyond what most people are willing to belive as logical

I mean, it could work, but I'm not sure if it would be less expensive and it would certainly take more time.

It also would require a very close and decently sized moon. While most planets naturally have them, they are usually either cleared away, mined into nothing, or turned into habitable space stations used as ports or ship construction (like your own asteroid mine/base) and larger moons like the Earth's moon are much more rare in nature, while anything bigger than that would have a barycenter much further away, meaning it would need more explosives and more time for any planetary ejecta to reach the target, meaning more time to respond to the threat.

In short, it would work, but I think the setting is a bit too soft in its sci-fi for it to be the most efficient and fool-proof method of doing it.

Also, at least in human space, there are dedicated security forces whose only job is to prevent terrorists from doing things like this. Half the job of a picket fleet is to tow asteroids out of collision courses and most PDFs consider it to be a decent chunk of their job.
>>
>>1002657
It's awful.

Hopefully unlocking psionic spores will allow us to coordinate the spores into growing together into a parasite after a human breathes them in, and then we can flood planets with that.
>>
>>1002772
As I said previously, this is a plan f. Not a, b, or c. The effects of the plan were at least enough to wipe out the dinosaurs, supposedly it heats the atmosphere to 1200 degrees for around two hours (I actually have calculations for raising that temperature even further for an even longer period of time, if need be). And 100 million megatons of tnt may sound like a lot, but that technology was available a really long time ago in this universe, so it should in theory be super easy and cheap to conduct such an operation.

>>1002777
As I have said previously, it's not that they would need to be unaware, it's that this stuff doesn't happen. Ever. Like, not even if it /looked/ like it was going to happen would a bunch of buearocrats authorize the evacuation of the planet until it was way too late.

>>1002791
Okay, thanks QD. Just thought it sounded like a cool idea that was so weird no one would expect it.

It is, it just more of a hard sci-fi solution in a somewhat softer sci-fi setting.

I recall someone on /tg/ explaining why Imperials use ancient super tech for Exterminatus instead of just towing an asteroid, it's a similar thing. The issue is the setting, not the validity of the plan itself.

>>1002818

We can literally grow structures out of pods of spores that can land from orbit. With or without workers it's going to take a day or two for structures to appear, and in that time we may have pushed the hapless populace back already if the hive is as OP as it seems at ground warfare.
>>
>>1002896
>We really should parasite at least one scav, if only so we can release it and have it guide us to their homeworld(s).
We already have a scav pack leader parasited, it's the egg makers who probably have that information, unfortunately they are the scav leaders.

Speaking of tech we still don't have the Photon armor statted out for us yet.

We already parasited one of the Scavs. We also already know where their main fleet is. It's by that one gas giant in the "blue giant" star system. They lost their home-worlds long ago.

Oh, actually, that was the post I was remembering. Nice.

>>1002840
I suppose, but your odds are getting against you. The more stuff you get, the less likely it is that a future animal will have an adaptation that isn't just a different kind of thing you already have, and most planets will only develop a small handful of things potent enough to be used as a proper adaptation.

For world building purposes, I consider it an either-or situation. A planet will typically evolve either intelligence, or highly adapted fauna, and of the highly adapted fauna, only a handful will be performing on par with advanced technology.

For example, the Grek is a fascinating creature and capable of spitting flame via a natural process, but it's essentially just a poor man's fire spray. (they make fine pets on their own though) I actually had some notes for animals and plants on various planets you've gone too, but you gained the adaptation they unlocked via other means so you never encountered them in any focused capacity.

>>1002850
It would likely still be within the planet's "traffic space", meaning it gets classified as a space traffic hazard, but not an overt military hazard. Local observatories would wonder how it got there, and the PDF would probably contract a local freight company to go inspect it and tow it on a path that won't put local traffic at risk or cause automated freighter delays. Once they get there, I'd roll to see if they stumbled onto your charges, and if they did, they'd call the PDF and a fleet of interceptors would arrive to quickly blow it up/tow it away and then blow it up.

I mean I remember you saying that the paste we feed our drones is edible to humans but just really sweet so I figured we could turn it into a kind of treat. thank you, names are one of my biggest weakness as I can never freaking remember them.
>>
>>1003070
Bedrock? Yes, that, and the secret hive on Path, Gemini, and Huron are getting rolled into the new infiltration and espionage system.

The general gist of it is that there are varying levels of infiltration, which each hold a number of options for passive effects, resources gathering, and one-time operations which expend these resources. (in this case, resources are clones in positions of social standing or authority, contacts in local government or crime rings, as well as real estate or smuggled weapons and equipment) so in this case, after Bedrock is infiltrated, you would gain an option to begin siphoning credits and/or laundering credits into the hands of local clones, and spend these credits on local real estate, such as the club.

>>1003104
Same here. Speaking of which, you can still name your claimed Expanse worlds and systems, especially now that you are overtly claiming authority over them so the Union won't be giving them any official names beyond their serial numbers.

Could work. Specialized food products could be tailor made to fit the tastes of local populations with relative ease. The main issue is advertising, and whether or not you would want to open up a shell company, use your current one, or just let people know it is a Hive product, as well as if you want your company to be known as selling hive products or not.

>>1003176
They were largely unnamed as most were near or claimed by the Skyl, although they never got around to colonizing them and you are unaware of what they named them, if they got around to it. That information never seemed to reach Heretic if they did.

That is certainly an option.
>>
>>1003119

could be fun coming up with an advertising campaign if we're looking for something more mundane and light hearted if we go through something serious and need something to cool down.

>and whether or not you would want to open up a shell company, use your current one, or just let people know it is a Hive product, as well as if you want your company to be known as selling hive products or not.
Probably better to hide the fact that it's hive made since I have a feeling that the hive is not going to be making very many friends for awhile and it would probably be wise to make another shell company since it would probably be seen as odd for a company that makes space ship parts to suddenly go into the food making business as well. Plus if someone for whatever reason decides to follow the money we can make it a little harder on them to track it back to us.

Alright, lets start with Juric, dagmar and desmond.
I'm pretty sure we came up with a bunch of names for desmond because if it's gas giant, so if someone could go look for them in the achive it would be great.
We could also name desmond after the two discoveries there, the ooze and the metal feeding bacteria.

>>1003171
If there's one thing we have plenty of and can easily get more of, it's nutrients. I see no problem with selling food of any sort; though I imagine raw nutrients are filling, but lack flavor. It might be easiest to start with slightly modded nutrients on worlds with expensive food. As for the PR? I figure we have a different shell for each industry we're in, to help keep things separate without being cluttered. acknowledge it's from the Hive is tricky; people are nervous about us, but selling cheap food might help ease tensions.

Any human with an ounce of economic sense and patriotism would oppose the marketing of cheap food from outsiders.

It's economic rape 101, flood the market with cheap and high quality goods, once the infrastructure comes to rely enough on the goods provided, the people providing it have the market (and by extension the society that relies upon it) by the balls, and they can do whatever they want because the society has become reliant on their willingness to continue providing those goods.

It's pretty much the tactic that some unscrupulous US companies became infamous for employing abroad on small third-world societies.

I had an idea about increasing our research.
Our main issue with research is that our thinker's have trouble creating new technologies, which is why our quantum thinkers and Elizabeth are so valuable.

So why don't we setup a program where we sponsor other human scientists to come research(who have an issue with lack of funds) to come work at our planet where we can provide an entire civilizations backing.
They get whatever funding they need to work on whatever project they've always dreamed of (something Elizabeth has talked about being a huge problem in the scientifc community) and we get new research avenues for our thinkers to explore.

That is extremely unlikely, her creep is not fast enough to take all the resources a planet has in the time we engage her fleet, destroy it, begin orbital bombardment and send ground forces to invade the planet.
and even then there are certain places she cant gain resources from that we can with our tech.

We should build a several km long railgun in our most defended space and then use that one travel tech we have to open portal which they use to transport non ftl capable crafts over long distances with, this would allow us to build a however big railgun we want without ever having to move it, one big enough shouldn't have any trouble smashing a planet to rubble

You mean too much fun, QD is a good QM so even if we did this he would find a way to balance it out and what is a couple of several hundred km long railguns going to be able to do against void gods? it would just be able to help us against the pawns of the void gods but have very little to no effect on them.

i believe this was mentioned in my earlier post, just but moore railgin next to each other, you don't need accuracy, these are not missiles or fleets we are sending, these are solid lumps of metal weighing possibly hundreds of tons being send at ridiculous speeds.
We have already discussed this a couple of threads ago but i can't remember how it turned out, i also know we had a couple of more ideas that were non combat ones.. just remember one, get the dna or whatever from the star dwelling ones and try to make a creep that can grow on certain stars by using the light and energy from the star to produce nutrients, i don't know how far we got on that one though
>>
I'm more interested in creating semi-autonomous fleet commanders. Yes, the thinkers that come with the ships work, but they are susceptible to psionic attacks and function poorly when not networked. Is there a way to use Human Hybrids or Chimeras as fleet commanders, and would it provide any kind of advantage if the combat zone was not networked to the Hive proper? The fleet commanders would be able to communicate with each other using non-psionic communication to increase their effectiveness as a fleet.
>>
>>1005810
>Human
Valen are actually better at commander shit.
>>
>>1005830
We also need Valen clones to use their female cycle(iirc they switch between female and male every breeding season or some shit likke that) for mating contracts that we can use to gain both techs, info and ground in the Valen society.
anyone have a drawing of a Valen, i think there is one
>>
>>1005810
>The "chimeras make good commanders argument."
QD has said that chimeras would struggle to control the same number of drones a thinker can because chimeras aren't completely hive organisms. the belief that chimeras can make better commanders that our thinkers is completely wrong, in reality it is backwards, thinkers (And the superior Quantum thinkers) are better commanders that any Chimera we can make.
>>1005852
There is one but it's inaccurate.
>>
>>1005869
>>1005810
For fleets and large scale invasions, yes chimera/hybrid commanders are the wrong way to go when compared to our Q-Thinkers.

But for situations with psionic fuckery like the events at NoWhere or the future fights against the OQ, Ceph, and other Void nonsense, a team lead by a character like Lyle, Elizabeth, or some premade Chimera might be an option?

I understand this is a contest of Efficiency vs Cool though
>>
>>1005830
I said Human because we're sure of their innate (and engineered by mom) immunity to psionics, but any psionic-resistant race would work.

>>1005852
They flip genders more or less at-will, making them bidirectional hermaphrodites. I forget if it's induced or natural, but either way they can flip genders on demand.

Elsewhere...
>Planet seeders - Essentially a Hive Creep in reverse, these layers of nanomachines are placed the surface of a dead world, growing over rock and barren surfaces during the terraforming process....The cost of deploying planet seeders is 10,000N 10,000M, and doubles exponentially every day for a week as the seeders spread across the planet, and then divide by half each day for another week.
2*(10 + 20 + 40 + 80 + 160 + 320 + 620) + 1240 (in thousands) = 3.740 Million Nutrients

>Weather Spire Network (8,000N 20,000M)

So, if those costs are correct, we're sitting on enough sugar to terraform three planets outright.
>>
>>1005888
That might work but we can also use drones with the white crystal relay and Psionic Cloaking too.
>>1005898
I think they flip genders by replicating their home planet seasons with chemical injectors.
>>
>>1005898
>but any psionic-resistant race would work
Hybrids don't have psionic resistance. Hell the only reason Humans "resist" psionics is because their brains rot when exposed.
>>
>>1005905
At some point we're going to need agents (and possibly ships) that have their brains explode slower than our quantum drones when exposed to the Void.
>>
>>1005898
Don't forget we're terraforming farcast right now.
>>
>>1005888
>yes chimera/hybrid commanders are the wrong way to go when compared to our Q-Thinkers
Actually our Q-Thinker are awful at complex tactics. Their only slightly better than regular thinkers.
>>1005919
Just put some tin foil on their heads.

>Just put some tin foil on their heads.
Hey, if it works...

I think you're wrong but i don't want to dig through the archive for the thread in which QD explains the differences between Chimera commanders and thinkers.
>>
So I just heard from QuestDrone. He's currently in the hospital waiting to go into surgery.

He says he's sorry he won't be able to make it to Sundays thread. I'll keep the thread updated to his condition when I learn more
>>
>>1006135
Stay safe, Quest Drone.
>>
>>1006135
ah fuck, it was his back that was the issue yeah?
>>

the hell happened?
>>

His twitter says he's going in for major heart surgery...
>>
>>1006164
well... I have no Idea where I got the notion he had back problems from then... still thats some scary surgery...

>>1006135
Aw shit.
How long will it take for him to recover?

Check the top of the thread, he explains it in his 3rd post.

ah, well... fuck.
>>
Son of a bitch. Hope he makes it through.
>>
>It takes 6 to 8 weeks until you can drive and work again.
And the hiatus returns.
Let's hope QD makes a full recovery.
>>
>>1006200
Hm. Well, I wonder if that'd be a positive or negative for running. That's presumably because of stress...
>>
>>1006179
Holy shit.

At least American medical expertise is pretty damn good, so there's that to bolster hopes.
>>
>>1006135
>>1006179
Damn.

Well, please don't die QD. It would be a massive bummer.
>>

But how long to type, damn it, how long to type?

You better survive this QD, and if there's anything you need after just let us know.
>>

why cruel world
>>
We should start a patreon
>>
Anyone knows where he lives so that we can find out if/how he died if we never hear from him again?
>>
>>1007068
If he needs cash for the surgery or anything like that then yeah, i'd be up for helping him, Or is that kickstarter? that kind of stuff all sounds the same to me but i could probably be in for around 100 usd a month at the most, depending on some stuff
>>
>>1007068
>>1007083
A gofundme is good for large amounts at a single time

Patreon would be a monthly donation.

I'll ask him once he's out of surgery and he lets me know
>>
>>1007113
I'd be up for a monthly donation, my business is about to take off so that'd work
>>
>>1006179
Well shit, one thing after the other.

Maybe they can do his back while they're at it.
>>
>>1007394
I'm pretty sure it is genetic

QD is out of surgery and in recovery right now
>>
>>1008489
What happened?
>>
>>1008496
Not sure exactly but he said it was a torn artery. He (or a family member) sent me a message earlier saying he was in recovery
>>
>>1008489
Thank goodness. I'd also support a GoFundMe. I just hope he's not too proud to accept.
>>
>>1008489
Thank Mother.
>>
>>1008508
Glad to hear he made it out ok. That was a nasty shock.
>>1008513
It's not a matter of pride; a lot of QMs do this for fun. Asking for money for it just feels weird to them, and it risks turning running a quest from leisure into a job.
>>
>>1008547
gofundme would be the more diplomatic choice then. it's a 1 time deal.

Quest Drone lies under the stark light on the operating table, oblivious to the panicked commotion swarming around him. Doctors pass transparent x-ray sheets and clipboards filled with medical histories frantically in an attempt to find out what exactly happened to their patient thsteelat made him crash so suddenly. One doctor slams her hand onto the cold steel table.

"What's the matter with you! The operation went perfectly; why are you dying!" Dr. Vonn nearly screams at her failing patient. The weak heartbeat flutters for a moment, almost in response to Vonn's protests, only for it to immediately return to the critical range. "Damn it!" Vonn cries out in anger.

The door to the observation area bursts open, revealing the hospital's Chief of Medicine, Dr. Quilinjer. "What the hell is this? Why are we committing so many doctors on a clearly hopeless patient? Clear the damn room and call it!" He shouts through the intercom into the operating room. Horrified, Vonn whips her head towards the window and back to her team, disgusted to see them complying.

"Why? Why would you follow such an order? It goes against everything we stand for as doctors!" Vonn yells, nearly hysterical. The other doctors and surgeons seemed cowed by this before one speaks up. "He's right," Dr. Cienner says plainly. "We've been working on this guy for hours and he's only been getting worse, hell we don't even know what's wrong with him." He says, calmly crossing his arms.

"Now, time of de-" "Don't you dare." Vonn interrupts, eyes glaring daggers at Cienner, finger pointing at him as if accusing him of the most heinous crime imaginable. The operating room is silent save for the machines and a weak heartbeat. Dr. Vonn slowly, purposefully walks forward until her finger jabs into Grey's chest. "When I took my oath, I meant it. Now we're going to help that man and we're going to save a life."

"Time of death ." Says Cienner looking down at Vonn, who punches him right on the jaw, sending a small tooth chip flying. Vonn is immediately restrained by the other doctors as Cienner nurses his jaw.

"You fucking bitch!" Cienner cries out, "You've always had chip on your shoulder since I shot down your T.C.-US project, but this? Get the hell out of here before I have your medical licence revoked." Defeated but still filled with rage, Vonn finally leaves the operating room.

Quest Drone died on the operating table that night.

Vonn resigned from the hospital that night, and joined up with Doctors Without Borders. She was sent to give aid to a small island village with spinning monkeys.

Cienner would break his leg and fall on a wasp, which he was deathly allergic of. He perished later that year.

Quilinjer was eaten alive by cats.

Damn, this is really hard, and my writing is absolute garbage compared to Quest Drone. In all seriousness, get well soon QD!

A quick wikipedia scrub says that this isn't necessarily over, but he ain't dead yet.

Stay strong QD, Mother would say so.
>>
>>1011983
Mother would also say one heart is terribly inefficient and request he get a second.
>>
>>1011998
Absolutely. So, since we currently lack the appropriate technologies, who's offering? I ride a motorcycle so I'm already an organ donor. Anybody else?
>>
>>1011875
Aortic dissection: i.e. his aorta (the crucial artery that comes directly out of the heart and branches into all other arteries) came very, very close to splitting open.

He's lucky as all hell that he didn't die, but if he survived the operation then he's probably going to be fine.
>>
>>1012238
Yeah it's one thing you don't recover from if it got any worse.

He said he's in the hospital for at least another week but I'd rather he stay in there as long as he needs to to be safe
>>
>>1012263
Actually staying in a hospital too long can be a bad idea due to antibiotic resistant bacteries that lurk in hospitals.
>>
>>1012708
Where else is he going to recover with doctors on hand?
>>
>>1013103
Depending on what you have, nowadays they try to get you out the hospital as fast as possible and do the rest of the recovery at home. That's because super bacterias are a nasty problem. If your defences are weak you really shouldn't be in the hospital.
>>
>>1013308
damn. that's really creepy. to think the place where you go to get cured of bad stuff has a high chance of GIVING you bad stuff instead.
>>
>>1014024
anon is exaggerating a tad, most hospital rooms tend to be pretty sterile, so the chance of infection is low. Just because you have antibiotic resistant bacteria doesn't mean they can't be killed by alcohol and what have you.
>>
>>1014024
It's not nearly as bad as he implies unless you're in a shitty rural hospital or something, and those hospitals don't normally have the equipment to handle stuff like a heart operation, so he's likely in the best place he can be right now.
>>
>>1014856
Yeah he said they took him by helicopter to one of the best hospitals for vascular issues in NC.

No word from him today but I'm seeing no news as good news right now
