You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

Currently, you were facing down a massive Manticore that had the potential to threaten Eisenwand.

Well, currently, it was most certainly threatening you and your party. You had managed to track and pen it inside its cave, but now the beast's blood was fired up, and it was in the midst of the critical fight or flight phase every beast was beholden to.

However, either course of action meant that it would have to go through you. Naturally, you and Niko were forming the frontline, you with your halberd and Niko with a long, curved sword. Immediately behind you was Morgan and Nino ready to provide ranged support while even further back was Naru, who would only come in play in an emergency.

"Here he comes!" Niko calls out, though you didn't need the warning. The trembling ground and shaking rocks were evidence enough.

The Manticore was charging.

Thinking quickly, you decide to dodge out of the way so it'll be caught out in the open. That way, it'll be easy pickings for Morgan and Nino's ranged attacks.

The Manticore roars as it charges, its massive paws shaking the ground with every step...

Unfortunately, you're not quite fast enough. As you try to sidestep the manticore, the massive beast surges forward in a burst of speed, slamming into you and knocking you aside, your armor clattering on the rocks.

Niko, thankfully, manages to leap out of the way, completely avoiding the beast's charge.

Unfortunately, this mean that Nino and Morgan were now vulnerable, nothing standing between them and the manticore. Sure enough, it's lion head turns to face the two girls, nostrils flaring as its instincts to attack the weakest of the pack flare up.

You quickly scramble back up to your feet, but you weren't going to get to them in time. What happened next was going to be up to them. They could use the opportunity to attack the manticore, pour all their firepower into it, but if that didn't stop it.. well, they'd be in big trouble.

Or, they could flee, which would hopefully get the manticore to focus back on you or Niko. But at the very least, it was going to take them out of the fight for a bit.

You wave you arm rapidly at Morgan to tell her to fall back. Morgan catches sight of you and immediately understands. She stows away her bow and picks Nino like a sack of wheat before withdrawing into the rocks with almost supernatural swiftness.

Realizing its current prey had escaped, the Manticore stops, glancing at both you and Niko, apparently trying to decide which of you to attack first. Thankfully, both of you were on opposite sides of the beast, meaning it would have to commit to one of you.

You pick up a rock and throw it at the manticore, the projectile bouncing off the side of its massive head. Of course, such a simple attack didn't really do any damage, but that wasn't the point. You just needed to get its attention.

And just like that, the manticore swivels its body around, ready to attack. However, unlike revving up for a charge, you could see that the manticore was bracing itself, its scorpion tail waving side to side. It was definitely planning an attack with that tail.

Now, you knew that manticore stingers could punch through most types of armor, including poor quality plate, and the venom was particularly lethal if not treated quickly. However, since your armor was far from poor quality, there was a good chance you could take the hit.

The stinger shoots forward and slams into your mithril chestplate, but as expected, the stinger slams into the chestplate and fails to penetrate. You then wrap your arms around the stinger, holding it place and preventing the manticore from drawing it back for a follow up strike.

It also meant it couldn't defend its rear quarter from Niko.

"Haha! Here I go!" Niko whoops as she drops down from a higher cliff, sword and dagger at the ready.

Niko drops down, plunging her sword into the back of the manticore's neck. The beast roars and thrashes in pain. The tail is yanked out of your grip as it bashes itself into the rock walls as Niko hangs on for dear life.

These movements though were more from blind reaction to the pain rather than any sort of actual intent from the manticore. The best continues to thrash, crippled but still very much alive.

You look to your life and see that Morgan and Nino have finally circled back to a new vantage point, Naru close behind them in case emergency treatment was needed.

"Whooooaaaa!" Niko yelps as the manticore bucks and leaps under her.

You charge forward at the thrashing manticore, swinging your halberd and smashing the blunt end into one of its front legs, smashing the knee joint and sending the manticore crashing down, putting its head within arm's reach. The creature roars, and you can feel its hot, rancid breath flow over and through your armor.

You quickly follow up with a spear thrust into its most vulnerable point on its head, the eye socket, driving the spear point as far in as you can.

At the same time, an arrow comes whistling from the sky and drives straight through the manticore's other eye, burying itself so deep you can only barely see the fletch feathers poking out.

And there's a WHUMP as the scorpion tail stinger that was aiming for your back falls to the ground, just as lifeless as the beast it was attached to.

"Holy shiiiiiiiiit." Niko gasps as she finally lets go of her embedded dagger and drops to the ground. "That was AWESOME!"

Morgan, Nino, and Naru then make their way down. As expected, Naru begins the process of harvesting all the most valuable parts of the Manticore while Nino and Romulus look on in awe at her quick, artisan-like work. Morgan walks forward casually and pulls her arrow out of the manticore's skull.

You nod approvingly to Morgan and give her a thumbs up.

"Heh, i-it was nothing." Morgan tries to brush off the compliment, but her rapidly wagging wolf tail betrays her true feelings.

"That was a pretty smooth kill, if i say so myself." Niko grins as she leans against the manticore's carcass. "Still, I'm a bit pissed I missed its vital point."

You shrug, well, it couldn't be helped. Though you give her a thumbs up as well. She did well on her end.

"Heh, thanks." Niko grins.

"Anyways..." Morgan suddenly steps in between you and Niko. "What are we going to do with the carcass? The fur and meat are easy enough to process, but I hear that their venom is actually quite valuable."

"You're damn right it is!" Naru says as she cuts the stinger off with her bonesaw. "It's got a lot of magical and medicinal properties that make it useful as a reagent! A lot of places would pay top dollar for it!"

"Or maybe earn a favor from someone?" Nino suggests. "I'm sure the Tower or the Church or even the Templars could use something like that, right?"

"Anyways, we could start heading back once we're finished processing the manticore." Morgan says as she turns her gaze to the sky. "But I'm afraid it'll get dark before we get back. Maybe we should camp out here?"

Suddenly, the ground begins to rumble and shift around you. Immediately, you go on alert as Romulus begins barking, likewise wary of something approaching.

"W-what's happening?" Nino asks, clinging close to you, her amateur senses not cluing her in.

And just as you feared, opponents begin bursting out from the ground in clouds of dust and dirt. They were small, rat-like, and were holding an assortment of improvised weapons and digging tools.

Kobolds.

Disgusting little creatures that lived in caves and mountains like this area. While they generally avoided conflict, they were highly territorial.

In small numbers, things were not much of a threat to you, but there were at least half a dozen, and there was Nino to worry about...

You put a reassuring hand on Nino's shoulder before bringing your halberd at the ready. You will fight off these aggressors! It's what she had trained for!

"R-right!" Nino nods, having regained her nerve.

The kobolds screech as they charge in, shovels and pickaxes (no doubt stolen) raised.

Nino is quick to act, immediately powering up offensive spells. She sweeps her arm out, and a flurry of icicles shoot out like flechettes, stabbing and impaling kobolds en masse. The creatures shriek and cry in pain, but more approach.

Thankfully, you're there to keep their advance in check. A swing of your halberd sends one unlucky kobold flying back, its chest caved in as it tumbles into its approaching comrades, breaking the momentum of their charge.

Realizing that they were out of their depth, the kobolds immediately being to flee, rapidly digging their way back into the ground or diving into the ambush holes they were hiding in. No doubt connected to their main warren. Romulus stands at the edge of one of the holes and starts barking, as if he was the one chasing them all off.

"Should we go after them?" Nino grins as her hand begins to burn with magical fire. "I think I can smoke the rest of them out!"

Nino stands over one of the kobold holes, points her palm downwards, and lets loose with a stream of fire straight down into the hole.

And all around the mountainside, you could see wisps of smoke rising from the ground. However, no kobolds surface. Whether it was because they weren't being affected or if they were already suffocated, you couldn't be sure. However, you didn't want Nino to be using any more magic than necessary. You were certain they wouldn't be much of a problem anyways.

"So what now?" Nino asks as she picks up Romulus.

And... you don't find anything else of note. Seems like the manticore was successful in chasing everything off, with the exception of those kobolds you ran into. You tap Nino on the shoulder and point back to the camp. It was time to head back.

"Awwww, okay." Nino sighs.

You could almost swear that she was disappointed that nothing had happened.

Was she taking a liking to using her magic for combat...?

You turn to Nino and point to her, wondering how she was feeling about using her magic for combat more and more.

"It's really great!" Nino chuckles. "I mean, traveling with you means I get to use magic in ways that we were never allowed to anywhere else!"

You then point to the smoldering kobold holes as you pass by them on the way back to camp. Does she enjoy using magic to kill her opponents?

"Hmmm, well..." Nino shrugs. "They're the bad guys, right? So it's okay to burn them and everything!"

You hesitate. That wasn't quite how things worked...

"Huh? Is something wrong?" Nino asks, clearly a bit confused.

You nod. Killing for the sake of killing was not supposed to be enjoyed or celebrated. Only the overarching objective, such as making sure the camp was secure. You put a reassuring hand on Nino's shoulder in an attempt to communicate this.

"Mmmmmmm, I guess you got a point there." Nino nods. "I guess I just get a little carried away because there's not a lot of opportunities to really go all out, you know?"

You nod in understanding. As long as she realized the problem.

"So... I've sorta been wondering." Nino starts to skip alongside you. "...how does manticore meat taste?"

You shrug. You never had it actually.

"Cool! Then we can both experience it together!" Nino says happily as she hugs your arm.

And sure enough, as you get closer to the camp, the smell of cooking meat wafts through your nostrils. It's not long until you see Morgan, Niko, and Naru sitting around a fire, a slab of manticore meat hung above it on a spit roast.

"Figured we might as well get rid of some of this meat in a productive way." Morgan grins.

"It's real awesome that Naru knows the good cuts!" Niko nods with a smile.

"Eh, you study monster biology enough and it's easy enough to figure out." Naru shrugs, trying to hide how happy she is at the praise.

You take a seat next to the fire, with Nino and Romulus both sitting down on your lap.

"So, how did the patrol go?" Morgan asks. "We heard a bit of a commotion..."

You shrug. Just a few minor inconveniences.

"...huh." Morgan frowns. "Well, it's good to see you two made it back safe."

Romulus barks.

"Sorry, the three of you." Morgan quickly corrects herself. .

Nino and Niko laugh, and even Naru cracks a little smile.

Now it was time to see what manticore meat tasted like...

Could give us an excuse for Templar to speak and remove the helmet since it isn't their "normal" voice and appearance.
