You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

"Hrrrrrm, you lot seem to have quite the penchant for causing trouble." Havel grunts, his heavy armor creaking as he shifts uncomfortably in his chair. "Attacking people without warning in the middle of the city? And an Elven citizen at that?"

Currently, you and Morgan were sitting in the Monastery's main hall with Havel, after making your escape from the city and those suspicious Elves following the two of you.

"I made sure that it would be traced back to us." Morgan mumbles, her ears drooping.

"Who do you think is the first person everybody complains to every time an Elf so much as bruises their knee?" Havel sighs.

"You... you have a point." Morgan nods. "But they were following us and one of them made a move-"

"I never said you didn't do the right thing, but you should act more cautiously." Havel grumbles. "And you were supposed to be the one to keep your comrades honest."

"S-sorry." Morgan's ears droop even further, if that was possible.

You rap your gauntlet against your chestplate, signifying that if anyone was to be blamed, it would be you. Morgan fired on your call, after all.

"Hmph, I'm not about to get into a discussion of who exactly is at fault." Havel crosses his arms sternly. "Morgan fired the shot, and nothing can change that."

"So are we going to be punished?" Morgan asks, getting straight to the point.

"Sol no. Why would I do something like that?" Havel shakes his head. "But I recommend you steer clear of the city for the time being, ESPECIALLY you, Templar. Nothing riles Elves more than the sight of black armor."

You nod in agreement.

"Maybe we should checked for quests while we were at the Guild..." Morgan sighs.

"No need for that." Havel interjects. "It seems your deeds have not escaped the notice of the Marshals, Templar. They were wondering if you would be willing to handle several quests of their own."

You nod. Anything for the Templar Order.

WITCH HUNT: The Witchhunters have received word that rogue mages have fled to the Frontier in an attempt to evade the reach of the Mage Knights. Now is the perfect opportunity to show them Sol's justice.

ROGUE WARBAND: A small Orcish warband has managed to slip past the frontlines in Voss and are believed to be camped in the Frontier. The Crusaders would very much like to have this stain on their honor rectified.

MONSTER SUPPRESSION: The Champions have heard rumors of a Manticore taking up residence in the mountains near Eisenwand. It would bring great glory to whoever can seize its heads.

You nod your head at the mention of monster suppression. That was always a nice thing to go for.

"Indeed." Havel chuckles. "The reports indicate that the Manticore has made its burrow in the mountains north of the city. There's no farms or settlements out there, but I'd rather not have something as dangerous as a Manticore lurking so close to the city itself."

You nod in agreement.

"A Manticore..." Morgan puts a hand to her chin. "That's quite the opponent."

"It's a good thing you have a such a dependable party." Have points out. "Now, I doubt that Manticore will be going anywhere, so you may rest here a while longer if you wish."

You nod to Morgan as she shuffles off to her chambers as you turn and make your way to library, where you were sure Nino would be.

As expected, she was sitting in a little corner of the library, surrounded by piles of books she's read through and other's she's yet to start on. The one she's reading seems to be written in a script that is completely unintelligible to you.

"Oh, hi there!" Nino's face brightens as she sees you enter. "Where were you? You were gone for so long!"

You just shrug. Just doing a few errands.

"Ha, I guess you had fun, then." Nino nods happily. "I was just sorta reading up on Elven history out of curiosity. It's actually pretty fascinating!"

You brush some scattered books aside and take a seat next to Nino, you armor clanking against the stone floor and wooden staircase. Nino, however, takes this chance to pounce and she hops from her spot onto your lap like a cat and she snuggles in.

"So you want to hear more about Elves?" She asks, her eyes sparkling at the opportunity to spread what she's learned.

You nod. Even though you did have knowledge about the Elves, it was a very broad education. Mainly on the best ways to eliminate them as threats. You honestly did not know that much else about them.

"Cool! What do you want to learn about?"

You make a stabbing motion with your hand, as if you were holding a sword.

"Their fighting ability? Sure!" Nino nods as she snaps her fingers. One of the books in the scattered pile around you levitates into the air and floats right into her hand. You were never going to get used to that.

"Hmmmm, let's see..." Nino's eyes dart as she flips through the pages. "Hmmm, yeah, so it says here that Elven armies typically value mobility over anything else, so their forces tend to consist mainly of skirmishers and cavalry."

You nod. Skirmishers made sense, since being fast and light played to their advantage in the thick, wild forests they called home. But the cavalry was a first. You point to the page where there was an illustration of what looked like an Elf riding a stag.

"Ah yeah, I guess not a lot of people know about Elven cavalry, huh?" Nino grins. "That was their answer for fighting in open ground where they couldn't rely on the forest to mask their movements. Though the concept was still the same. Hit and run attacks on the enemy's flanks until they give up or route. When they're on the defensive, Elves really know their stuff!"

You lean forward. Obviously there had to be weaknesses.

"Well, obviously, being light forces, they don't carry heavy armor or siege equipment, which is why they've always had hard times taking castles and forts and avoided such things. Also, their relatively small population means they're more susceptible to attrition, so they really have no answer to a force that's completely dedicated to running them down. You know, like slash and burning their forests!"

You nod and ruffle Nino's hair. It was the most obvious tactic, after all.

"Hehe!" Nino giggles cheerfully. "Anyways, nobody's seen Elven cavalry for the last 150 years! Not after the Battle of Moorway Creek!"

You glance at Nino, curious about what she was talking about.

"Well, there was a situation where Tilea was trying to pin down King Auroniel, who was leading one of the largest Elven cavalry warbands ever seen! Over two thousand riders! They were always outrunning the Tileans until one of their generals lured them to the town of Moorway. The creek there was actually dammed up you see, so when the Elves crossed it expecting an easy target, the Tileans opened the dam and flooded the creek, cutting off the Elves' retreat! Five thousand Tilean knights versus two thousand Elven riders! It was a HUUUUUUUGE battle! A total massacre!"

You nod, impressed. Tilean cavalry has always been highly respected. You kind of wished you could have been there to see that battle.

"Gosh, I would've loved to have been there to see that battle!" Nino sighs. "But pulling that off would require some very high level and very forbidden spellcraft..."

You wag a finger at Nino, cautioning her from getting too many wild ideas.

"Don't worry, I was just thinking about it! I'd never actually do it!" Nino assures you.

You, however, not quite fully convinced.

Perhaps it was time to get Nino to spend some customary time outside the library. It wouldn't do her any good cooped up in this dusty old room all day. You start to stand up, gently setting Nino aside as you do so.

"Awwww, are we done already?" Nino pouts.

You lift Nino up effortlessly, the little mage barely weighing more than a feather to you as you set her upon your shoulders.

"H-hey!" Nino stammers. "T-this is embarrassing! I'm not a kid!"

You reach a hand up and poke her in the cheek. She was definitely still a kid. Therefore there was nothing improper with this level of treatment.

"F-fine!" Nino pouts. "Then if that's the case, you'll do what I tell you to!"

Honestly that depended on what she wanted, but you shrug just to hear her out.

"I wanna do a little magic training outside!" She says, pointing towards the gate. "Big Meanie Havel won't let me do anything in the courtyard, so we have to go outside the walls. I have some new spells I wanna try out!"

Nino closes her eyes and hold her hand out, palm open and facing upwards. You can feel a sort of static in the air as mana begins to build up. Hovering just above her palm, you could see an infinitely dark speck as it slowly grows into a tiny orb of pure darkness. No, not just darkness. It felt like a void in the very fabric of the world. Pure nothing.

"Isn't it cool?" Nino grins. "This is what the older mages call an errr... singularity! Yeah!"

You lean forward to get a closer look.

"Don't touch it!" Nino warns. "Um, this black ball thing makes whatever it touches disappear!"

You pause, not quite believing what she was saying.

"Honest!" Nino picks up a rock with her free hand and drops it onto the black orb. The rock falls towards the orb and instantly dissolves on contact, as if the orb simply absorbed the object into itself.

"I don't think the mages have managed to find anything that could withstand a singularity!" Nino smiles. "Though, you know, I have to be really, REALLY careful of where I throw it. I'm not quite sure how the trajectory works..."

You nod at Nino to continue her practice. You could probably afford to tarry for a little while longer.

"All right!" Nino nods. "New spell coming right up!"

Instead of a massive fire explosion like you were expecting, you instead see numerous small balls of fire form around Nino, like tiny suns. They orbit around her for a few seconds before she points at a nearby tree, and all of the orbs suddenly zip forward and drill themselves in the trunk, burning a series of neat holes into the wood.

"Quite impressive."

You turn to see Caroline and Justin standing at the edge of the clearing, observing intently. Caroline, of course had a rather impatient look on her face, while Justine remained as cool and stoic as ever.

"H-hey, what are you two doing here?!" Nino yelps.

"What, we can't visit or anything?" Caroline grunts. "Jeez, yer really rude for a mage, you know!"

"We merely detected highly elevated levels of mana usage and stopped to investigate." Justin says softly. "I hope we're not intruding."

You shake your head in response to Justine's query. You didn't really mind the twin Mage Knights' presence. In fact, it made you a bit glad that despite all that's happened, the Tower is still looking out for Nino.

"Hmmmm, were fireballs all that you cast?" Justine wonders as she examines the clearing, the tree Nino had used for target practice still smoldering.

"Yeah, you weren't dabbling in restricted magic again, were you?" Caroilne grunts.

"Ah, well..." Nino blanches.

"W-well..." Nino stammers, trying to figure out a way to explain herself.

Her eyes dart to you, but you ever so subtly shake your head. She was going to have to learn to how to talk to these girls, and other people in general. After all, this was one of your duties as her unofficial guardian.

"You see..."

"It wasn't anything too special!" Nino laughs nervously. "Just practicing my regular spells and totally nothing restricted or forbidden like singularity!"

The twins both pause and look at each other and then back to Nino.

"Okay, we'll let you go for now!" Caroline grunts. "But don't think we'll be so nice next time!"

"We ARE still duty bound to serve the Mage Guild." Justine adds. "So please keep that in consideration."

You nod to them, thanking them for their consideration to you.

"A-Anyways, I guess we should start going now." Caroline says, hesitating.

"Don't you want something from the Templar first?" Justine wonders.

"Why would I even want something from a scoundrel like that?!" Caroline snaps back.

Hmph. Seems like these girls had really taken quite the liking to you. You're starting to suspect the reason they're stopping by at regular intervals wasn't just to keep an eye on Nino, but also to pay visits to you.

Well, that was a suspicion, anyways.

Realizing that this was the best way to have the two young Mage Knights go on about their business, you reach both arms out...

You suppose there's no helping it, really. You press your hands against both twins' silver hair and ruffle it around. Caroline makes a funny squealing noise while Justine stays silent, but does nothing to resist you.

"Huh, I guess headpats are something you just give out to any girl, huh?" Nino grumbles. You could feel her glare boring a hole in your back.

"You should consider it fortunate you have such a skilled knight at your side." Justine points out and then bows her head to you. "Until next time, Templar."

"Yeah, we still gotta kick yer butt for last time!" Caroline grunts, her bravado starting to return.

And just like that, the two Mage Knights take their leave, heading off to do whatever Mage Knights do. You actually weren't too sure what those entailed.

"Man, what a pair of weirdos." Nino sighs as she slumps down to her knees. "Nnnnnnn, feeling kinda sleepy now..."

Just as you thought, Nino had used up quite a lot of mana on those spells of hers. You gently pick her up and start carrying her back to the Monastery.

"Thanks..." Nino mumbles as she rests her head against your chest, trying to get comfortable.

You carry Nino back to the Monastery, and by the time you reach the front gate, she's already fast asleep, though she still occasionally mumbles spell incantations under her breath. Even in her sleep, she can't stop thinking about magic.

However, you do get the feeling that she also mumbles your name as well, though it has to be your imagination.

Finally, you reach Nino's room and gently set her down on her bed and tuck her in.

"Nnnnnnn, love you..." Nino slurs.

You look around instinctively to make sure nobody else was around. After all, taking off your helmet meant making your head vulnerable to attack, which was the last thing you wanted. After being reasonably sure there were no immediate threats, you take off your helmet, lean down, and kiss Nino on the forehead. For good fortune, of course.

For a brief second, Nino's eyes flutter open, and you fear that you've woken her up. However, just as quickly, her eyes slide shut as she slips back into sleep.

Job done, you carefully put your helmet back on and quietly exit Nino's room. Or at least, as quietly as your armor would allow.

...and you exit to find both Naru and Niko waiting in the hall.

"Aw man, that was just too cute!" Niko snickers.

"You're gettin' awfully intimate with Nino there." Naru cracks her knuckles, eye twitching. "Better not be getting IDEAS, you get my drift?"

Looks like this night was going to be far from over...

I'd say the Templar is a man since they aren't a Nun unless they're a lady knight. So unless Nino can remember if she dreamed about a handsome man, or a gorgeous woman, we are in the dark.
