You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

Currently, you have just slain a larger than average basilisk that had been terrorizing some nearby farms, and you've taken all the proof of the kill you needed in the form of its claws, scales, teeth, and eyes. Especially the eyes. Naru had been very particular about them since they were the most valuable part of the creature.

However, you also had a little run in with the Paladins of Sol, something of a rival knight order to the Black Templars, despite having a common origin and purpose. One of their number, by the name of Solaire, was apparently on the run from them, or something.

Either way, now was what to decide what to do. You could always travel back to Eisenwand to turn in the bounty, but you could equally travel further out into the Frontier and turn it in at one of the Guild branch offices. You had heard that there were more... "exotic" quests out there that hadn't had time to trickle back to the frontier capital.

Plus maybe you would have a run in with that Solaire again...

Since our specialty covers monsters, does that include Giants?

Last thing we want to do is to accidentally murder a productive member of society considering the niche they can fill (military, construction, labour, etc.).

"So, where do we go to next?" Morgan asks as she finally stows away her bow and arrows. "We still got plenty of supplies to keep moving around."

You nod and point down the road, away from Eisenwand and further west.

"Understood." Morgan nods. "If we keep going down this road, we'll come across Aldenshire. One of the larger frontier settlements. There should be a Guild branch out there, too."

You nod back and stow your halberd. Morgan meanwhile calls out to Nino and Naru to start packing up as well. Naru was still cutting parts of the basilisk off with Nino watching intently, like a student observing her teacher. She was probably asking all sorts of questions as well, given the slightly more disgruntled look on Naru's face.

Romulus then comes bounding from his hiding place, barking rapidly as if annoyed he had been left behind. You bend down to pick him up, but he backs away and trots off to Morgan instead.

Morgan laughs as you pause to wonder why Romulus was so angry at you.

However, soon enough, all of you were on your way to Aldenshire. Nino picks up her pace to catch up with you, a book still clutched in her hands.

"Hey, hey!" Nino's eyes sparkle. "So, those guys we saw earlier were Paladins of Sol, right?"

You nod.

"And, and, they don't like the Black Templars, right?"

You nod.

"So why did that first one help us out? He seemed pretty jolly about it." Nino continues.

You shrug.

"Hmmmm..." Nino pauses before turning to you again. "So why exactly do Paladins and Templars not get along? I know you two split off from each other but why?"

You shrug. The split happened so long ago, nobody really remembered the specifics.

"That's not a satisfying answer at all!" Nino pouts.

"Well, you have to understand, Nino." Morgan butts in. "The Paladins and Templars have been around for a looooong time, and it's natural for things to be forgotten. And I'm guess that anybody that does know is in no mood to talk. Or dead. Most likely dead."

"That's no fun at all!" Nino grumbles. "How can people just forget things..."

"That's why we write books, squirt." Naru sighs.

Well, whatever the case, it looked like you were coming up to Aldenshire now...

Aldenshire looked to be a simple enough town, not to different from the many you've seen back in the Kingdoms. However, you noted that this town was ringed by a large and tall wooden palisade. The first line of defense against bandits and beasts. You would have preferred stone, but at least the construction looked solid.

At the front gate stood a pair of guards. No doubt locals from the town. They wore a slapdash array clearly inherited armor pieces, and crude but simple spears. Sufficient to ward off local wildlife and bandits, but only just.

The guards immediately snap to attention when they see you and your party arrive. They stand up straight and stay still as statues. A closer look would reveal them as... trembling. Were they scared of you?

"Good day." Morgan greets them as you approach.

"G-g-good day, ma'am!" One of the guards stammers, his gaze still locked on you. "Y-you're not here to hunt down any witches or heretics, are you?"

You just stare at the young guard. You're not even trying to get across any sort of point or intent. You just keep staring. Often times you found it was a very good way to get people to stop bothering you about trivial matters.

"U-um sir?" The guard seems to shrink smaller and smaller by the second.

Staaaaaaaare.

"All right, that's enough." Morgan grunts as she shoves you through the gate, demonstrating far greater strength than her small, lithe body would suggest. "You're not going to make any friends behaving like that."

"Still, it was great to see him make a guy piss his pants just by staring at them." Naru grins as she walks past. "I should learn how to do that sometime."

"I wanna learn that too!" Nino chirps as she follows.

"You? Scaring somebody?" Naru casually ruffles Nino's hair. "That'd be the day, squirt."

"H-hey!" Nino whines.

Romulus, still draped over Morgan's shoulder, seems to snicker at this turn of events.

Anyways, the guards let you pass through the gate with no issue. You look around the town and see that it had all the main institutions. The local church, town hall, inn, and Guild branch. You also notice several elvish tree houses and solid rock, windowless homes of dwarves. Almost like a miniature version of Eisenwand.

"Uh oh." Morgan stops in her tracks.

You walk up to see what the trouble is. Up ahead, you could see about a dozen Paladin warhorses stabled up outside the Guild Hall. Apparently, that little Paladin troupe had decided to stop here as well.

"Maybe we should come back later..." Morgan suggests.

You push your way through the doors and walk in like any other law abiding citizen. Almost immediately, a dozen silver helms turn to face you as you make your way to the front desk. And an awkward silence falls over the entire building. Everybody knew Paladins and Templars didn't mix too well, and nobody knew what would happen.

You just continue on your business to the front desk, where the Guild clerk happily greets you.

"Welcome, adventurer!" She chirps cheerfully. "What business do you have today?"

You narrow your eyes. She was practically an exact copy of the girl from the headquarters in Eisenwand. Well, in either case, you weren't here to ask questions, just collect a bounty. You take out the bounty notice as well as a couple of the basilisk's claws and place them on the table.

"Oh, bounty collection? Just a second!" The Guild clerk pulls out an enchanted stone and runs it over the notice and the claws. The notice glows with etched runes, and the stone glows a soft blue. "And it looks like everything checks out!"

The Guild clerk then ducks behind her desk before returning with a small bag of gold coins.

"Congratulations! Good luck on your next bounty!" She says as she hands you the bag.

Meanwhile the whole building still eyes you warily.

You next head over to the job board, naturally to find a new job to take on. However, you hear a bit of a commotion behind you and you turn to see that all of the Paladins were now gone. Well, except for one. Their apparent leader, Valentia, if you remember correctly. She strides up to you, determined, but not aggressive. You merely stand and wait to hear what she has to say.

"What does she want?" Morgan asks.

You motion for her to stay quiet for now.

"Let's not play games, Templar." Valentia grumbles. "I know you've crossed paths with Solaire. Don't pretend you haven't."

You stare at the Paladin girl and then prod her chestplate with your finger. What was so important about this Paladin that she was going through all this trouble to find him?

"W-what?!" Valentia backs up, her hand instinctively reaching for her sword. "What was that for?!"

"I think." Morgan interjects. "He was asking why you're chasing your very own Grand Master out here."

You turn to Morgan, surprised.

"What, you didn't know?!" Morgan blinks. "Solaire Astora? One of the greatest Paladins to ever live?"

Huh, now that you think about it, that name did ring a bell now.

"Look." Valentia sighs. "The thing is, my- Solaire is not supposed to be out here. He was only supposed to inspect the Cathedral in Eisenwand and return home."

"And so he's gone rogue on you." Morgan concludes.

You shake your head. So unprofessional.

"He's a very... nostalgic knight." Valentia sighs. "But I- we're afraid that he'll get himself hurt or worse out here, especially because he's, well, not quite in his prime anymore."

You glare down at the Paladin girl again, wondering what point she was trying to get at.

"Look, I need help in finding him, and a dozen fully armed and armored Paladins stomping around the wilderness announcing their presence everywhere they go is not going to help that." Valentia seems to deflate just a bit. "Solaire obviously trusts you, and I know you're the best tracker in the Frontier, White Wolf."

Morgan seems to frown at that nickname, as if she didn't like being called that.

"Well?" Morgan turns to you, her voice cold as ice now. "What's your call?"

"I'll make sure you're well compensated for your trouble." Valentia adds. "Triple what that basilisk got you. A Paladin always keeps their word."

Well, there was only one way to resolve this. One way to tell whether this Paladin was truly being sincere or not.

Romulus conveniently was still perched on Morgan's shoulder, allowing you to pluck him up and place him in Valentia's hands.

"What am I-?" She blurts before you put a finger up, telling her to stay still.

Romulus then sits up on his haunches and sniffs at Valentia's face and stares for a long while. Valentia just awkwardly stares back, still bewildered at what she's doing.

And then Romulus licks her nose.

"AAAH!" Valentia squeaks as she actually falls backward, allowing Romulus to stand on her chest and continue licking her nose.

You give a thumbs up to Morgan. It looked like Romulus liked her.

"Is this seriously going to be a thing now?" Morgan groans.

"SOMEBODY HELP MEEEEE!" Valentia wails under Romulus' adorable attack.

"No shouting in the hall, please!" The Guild clerk giggles.

Afterwards, Morgan secures Romulus while you help Valentia back up to her feet, her face amusing crimson red. Good thing she had already dismissed her little troupe. You then nod your head and give her the thumbs up.

"You'll help then?" She gasps, as if not actually expecting you to agree.

You nod again.

I- ah- well, erm, thank you." Valentia stumbles over her words. "I think I have an idea of where Solaire headed off to, unless you want to get some rest first?"

You nod towards the door. There was still plenty of daylight. You could head out right now.

"Um, okay, I'm assuming you're good to go, then." Valentia gazes at the job board and pulls down a bounty. "Considering he needed your help to take down that basilisk, I think it's safe to say that he'll move onto something a bit less... stressful."

Valentia then hands you the bounty notice.

WANTED: HOGGER

It seems one of the town's prize hogs had gotten loose quite some time ago and had gone feral. What was once the Frontier's largest hog has only grown larger in the wilds, and even gathered its own little herd of wild hogs. To protect the public safety, the mayor of Aldenshire has finally and reluctantly posted a bounty for Hogger's head.

"A pig?" Morgan frowns.

"An extremely large pig, from what I'm told." Valentia sighs. "I have no doubts that Solaire will go after it."

"Well, let's go after it, then." Morgan says.

You head out again to retrieve Nino and Morgan. Nino was simply wandering around, seemingly mapping the entire town in her mind. Naru meanwhile was busy hocking all the basilisk body parts she had picked up.

"A pig? That seems kinda... mundane." Nino frowns.

"I wonder if they'll let us eat it...?" Naru's mouth starts to water.

"How long have you been going on without meat?" Morgan frowns.

"Too long. Don't even ask." Naru replies dourly.

Meanwhile Valentia just seems totally aghast at how your fellows were behaving.

Hell, even Romulus is drooling over the prospect of all that meat.

All that ham would be great for some stuffed potatoes. Just need some eggs, cheese, onions, and a bit of pepper.

Feral pigs are serious business. They get to the size of refrigerators and will eat whatever they can bring down. Their way of foraging for plants destroys crops. And they breed like fucking rabbits--they're actually considered a pest in Texas and I know that in both Texas and California private landowners will pay to get rid of their hog infestations.

You have to admit, you do take a little enjoyment in seeing the Paladin squirm in discomfort, having to spend time outside her comfort zone in the company of those outside her Paladin order.

While Morgan led the way, Nino continually pestered Valentia with endless questions about the Paladins. And Naru hung in the back, looking uncomfortable in general and you swear that she was trying to make sure Valentia never got a good look at her face...

You decide to talk to Naru, slowing your pace so that she would catch up to you. You then poke her in the shoulder to grab her attention.

"Huh? What do you want?" She grunts.

You point to her, and then point to Valentia, wondering if the two of her were related to each other somehow.

"What? No, I don't know who this Valentia girl is." Naru shakes her head. "It's just, me and Church don't mix so well. You wouldn't understand."

You tap her shoulder again and point to yourself. To your black armor signifying that she's talking to a Black Templar, of all people.

"Oh right, guess I'm an idiot." Naru grunts. "Like I said, I kinda had a falling out with my cleric buddies. And by extension, that means I don't get along so well with their armored butt buddies, too."

You keep prodding her with your finger until she finally breaks down.

"All right! All right!" Naru hisses. "I got shitcanned for the grand crime of saying shit that wasn't popular with the other clerics! You know, thinking that Sol isn't all sunshine and rainbows!"

You prod her again for meaning.

"You know, if Sol is out there." Naru grumbles. "Which sometimes I don't think he actually is, he's gotta be a massive asshole."

You don't break your stare.

"Otherwise, I, the great and mighty Naru Yuzuha, wouldn't be here." She almost spits the words out. "Some bum who knows a healing spell or two trying to scrape by a living on the ass end of nowhere."

You nod and pat Naru on the shoulder. It's understandable to have one's faith in Sol tested. However, as long as they didn't stray from the light, salvation was still possible.

"Huh, never thought you'd be the understanding type." Naru frowns. "Figured you'd just like, cut my head off for saying this shit or something."

You shake your head. You'd only do that if she did something TRULY heretical, like following the Elves' sinful dark magic. It also helped that you were not a Witch Hunter, either. You had a feeling they'd be less tolerant of Naru's words.

"Well, I guess that makes me feel a bit more comfortable venting to you." Naru grins ever so slightly. "I guess that's one of the perks talking to a guy who won't speak, huh?"

You nod again.

"Shh!" Morgan stops and motions for you all to stop as well. She then carefully creeps backwards, trying not to make any noise until she reaches you.

"I found a few hogs. Might be part of Hoggers' herd." She whispers. "Guess Solaire hasn't come this way yet, if they're just foraging in the open like this. We can try waiting for him to come to us, but if those hogs spot us, they'll probably warn Hogger and I'm not sure what a feral hog will do."

You make a slitting motion across your throat. No survivors to warn Hogger.

"Got it." Morgan nods. "Though, I think we should try taking them out silently. Unless, well, we can get Nino in on it too and just try to wipe them all out in one go."

"All right." Morgan puts her hood up and draws her bow. "I'm going to try to sneak around them and force them down your way. You and Valentia should be able to handle them before they can get away."

You nod. Three hogs, three of you. Simple enough.

And Morgan moves off to get into position...

You can barely even keep track of Morgan as she shuffles through the brush, evading even the normally keen sense of the hogs as they graze for grass and roots. She even gets past the one designated to be the lookout.

She quietly draws her bow and lets loose a single arrow, which digs itself into the side of the lookout.

The lookout squeals in pain and alarm and immediately begins to flee from Morgan. The other two hogs stop their grazing and instinctively follow their fleeing fellow.

Right into you and Valentia.

"Are you ready, Templar?" Valentia asks, sword and shield raised.

You nod as you ready your halberd. You weren't about to be shown up by a Paladin.

You immediately charge forward, halberd at the ready. One swing of the blunt end immediately crushes the skull of the first hog, and you quickly spin around in the opposite direction to bury the pointed end into the side of the other hog's neck, bringing it down as it squeals and wheezes from rapid blood lose. Quick and clean.

Valentia is left to deal with the remaining hog that Morgan had hit. However, this hog was already crazed and mad from the wound and it charges directly at the young Paladin. To her credit, she's able to raise her shield just in time to block the attack, but the sheer momentum of the hog knocks her off balance and onto the ground. The hog then tries to gouge at the downed Valentia with its tusks, with the girl barely able to hold it off with her shield while her sword arm scrambles to find an opening to attack.

You stride over and give the hog a solid kick with your armored boot, sending the animal flying off of Valentia and into a nearby tree. Morgan rushes forward and plunges three more arrows into it while it's stunned, finishing the creature off.

"Sorry about that, I was trying to aim for its spine." Morgan says apologetically.

You put a hand up to tell her that she did a fine job. You then turn to offer a helping hand to Valentia, who reluctantly takes it.

"T-thanks." She mumbles, her face beet red at her poor showing.

"Awww, don't sad!" Nino tries to reassure her. "Here! You can hold Rommy!"

Nino then raises Romulus up to Valentia's face, who then proceeds to lick her nose again.

"AAAAAH!" Valentia squeaks as she fall backwards again.

"Hmmmm, I wonder if these things are edible..." Naru wonders aloud as she kneels over one of the hog corpses and pokes at it with a stick, her mouth watering.

Certainly a rather strong end to the day, in your opinion.
