/qst/ - Quests

Welcome back, everyone, to the eighty-first installment of Mecha Space Pirate Quest! It's been almost a year, but we've been averaging well over one thread a week, which surprises me a little. I'm Wong, your host, and you are once again Admiral Roarke S. Starwind, Admiral of the Iron Kestrels and...wait, no, you're not Roarke today. At least not starting out. Today, you are Heinrich "Caesar" Merrow, son of the legendary war hero Rudolph Merrow, the man who put Bahamut Corporation's designs on the map, an ace pilot on the run from the UJCIDF, pilot of the King Swordfish mk. II.

You'll also be tourney pilots soon, unless that happens next week. A little time to decompress between fights is nice, but I rather like the design i came up with for the next map. Who doesn't love World War I?

Also congrats on whoever caught me accidentally changing Roarke's dad's name last thread. We'll say Gregor was his middle name, that was before I had it settled that he used Andersen as a portrait.

Question: What are you using for the hex maps? Want to try making some for when my brothers and I want to run a Mekton Zeta game.

So I finally finished Berserk and the fact that Casca is going to be healed within the next three chapters is too much to deal with

I literally googled "hex map" and edited it in Paint.

Here's the next round's. The blue squares are 100m deep trenches. The yellow squares are still 50m elevated.

You mean caught up.

Now you have time to watch the 1999 Anime though. It's pretty fucking amazing. Especially the dub. Berserk's dubbed outtakes are the actual predecessor to Abridgements.

Oh man, those trenches. Gotta go deep...or rush to the hill.

Of course

Back attacks won't be easy, but indirect fire could work.
>>
>>1337070
Has anyone got indirect fire?
>>
For once, the sim-helmet isn't on your head. Everyone's watching the tournament, including you...although the holoscreen on one wall is dark and the 3-D map it was projecting is gone since there's a break between rounds until tomorrow. Thus, finding decent pickups for Bluegill Joe is a lot harder than usual, and even if you could find someone to play with you're not sure your heart would be in it. Last time, you started out floating in the dark devoid of any emotion but obnoxious teenage angst and missing your girlfriend, but this time things are different. This time you are ignited by a singular, dire purpose.

Miles, despite having a personality that reminds you of a honey badger with a drug problem, is a smart woman in a deviously cunning sort of way. She put a Roarke Starwind poster over your room's viewport, so that you couldn't see the Avalonian battleship floating peacefully in space, almost within range of the Rhinehawk's guns. Richard found out your weakness for collectibles and she assumed that you wouldn't damage it in order to get worked up with manly wroth at the sight of your vile nemesis yonder. She was correct, even though you have an autographed poster that Naomi procured for you the first time you came to Auditorium which is even more swagtastic. You keep it close, you swear you can still smell her perfume on it...and plus, it's an awesome poster. Miles being correct, though, doesn't make her infallible. You've managed to carefully remove the poster without ripping it, and are now staring at the ivory lance of the Avalonian warship now that you don't have the Pumpkinseed Jager dueling the Rosamine to distract you.

She's there.

That's the ship that took her.

You can SEE it.

Somewhere close by is that bastard Green Man worshipping devil who pilots the giant golden mech that brought you and everyone with you down. He's within your reach, and as that battle proved even an ace like him can bleed. You saw Miles damage his mech. Now, if only you could hit him...but to do that, you have to swing at him. Which you can't do from in here.

It would be really nice if you could leave, but unfortunately, Admiral Starwind is a bit too clever for that and has instructed his Bosun and First Mate to keep you here under guard until the Avalonians are gone.

You can hear the sound of someone approaching, though, and judging from the chronometer on your PC they're probably bringing you food.

Well, time to do something stupid
>>
>>1337110
That's not tragic enough though, he'll probably make it to Naomi only to be dragged away as she asks who he is.
>>
>>1337120
Remember what wong said about there being a totally IC chain of actions that would lead to him defecting to avalon?

If she asks him to stay, he might.
>>
>>1337114
More opportunity to use the cover rules though.
>>
>>1337081
Blast weapons in general do. Airburst above them, then hide in your own trench. With your roll, you can safely fire inderectly from 4 hexes.
>>
>>1337114

They are 100m deep, or effectively two hexes downward movement. It doesn't count as turning, but it does count as movement.

You should also consider what they do to LoS.

It would be very helpful if someone could repost Caesar's most recent stats if they find them before I do, I need to check something in the rules.

That should give you a little time to COME UP WITH A PLAN to misbehave, or at least input suggestions that may make this challenge easier. It only sounds like one person's coming, but you're sure there are more outside.

By the way, it is entirely possible for this escape to fail due to bad rolls and such.
>>
>>1337147
The wraith would be a nightmare if it got this far.
>>
>>1337167

That thing has a lot of range, and aside from the trenches themselves and the hill there's not a lot of cover, it could still be useful. There's going to be a bit less "duck right into the pillars and turn my back" this time, I suspect.
>>
>>1337169
There is one way that works for all people and places. The need to use the bathroom.
>>
>>1337169
We'll were going to need a disguise and an alibi to get on to the Avalonian ship. Maybe use the disguise as a delivery boy sending something like a gift from Victor to the Sunboy as a gift for an honorable fight?
>>
>>1337185
we got in the room though
>>
>>1337200
*one in
>>
>>1337200
Clog it.
>>
>>1337177
One thing to consider too is that you can use the trenches, as they are unbroken lines (WW1 trenches cry at such a lack of consideration for shrapnel and overpressure waves), as a firing lane if your opponent tries to flank, as long as you move towards the opposite end of the stretch your in from them. Then their other option is going over the top where you can shoot them anyway. Although if they go over the top of a directly parallel trench you only have a short window.
>>
>>1337200
We need to get this person into our room and then knock them out. Maybe tell the guy our toilets busted or we accidentally flushed something and we need a hand getting it out.
>>
>>1337205
Do we have a Space TacoBell nearby to use?
>>
>>1337147
Great, home internet crapped out.

Anyway, cutting LOS, huh? Well, we could be bombarded or ambushed from the top of the trenches.

Also, I think most of the contestants remaining, if not all, technically fly according to the rules. So the trenches could be more trouble.
>>
>>1337082
Well this bodes poorly for the Blitz.
>>
>>1337208
Cant they also poke out of cover and take shots at each other?
>>
>>1337082
>>1337220
Actually, where do contestants even start?
>>
You know we should probably be more worried about planning how we're going to save Naomi and not get captured before we worry about the Tourney.
>>
>>1337232
Probably after Caesar's Vignette since Round 1 of the Tourney.
>>
>>1337234

This is probably a very good idea.
>>
>>1337234
Could always start a fire and slip away while people try to sort in out.
>>

You know what? You made a choice. You became a pirate. You're not in the military anymore...at least, by your own consideration, the Admiral said something about there being a cover-up where you're on a secret mission but you are NOT going to end up in Fairchild's hands if you can help it...and therefore you're under no obligation to follow orders from anybody.

You grab your Iron Kestrels jacket and shades, and put them on, along with your collapsible monospear/shortsword hidden inside the jacket. Then, whistling, you head into the lavatory and swiftly begin stuffing paper into it, flushing repeatedly until it beeps irritatedly and flashes a warning message to let you know it's clogged. You snap the handle of the plunger off right at the cup, too. Fortunately, the person bringing you food is conversing with your guards, which is nice, it lets you know that there's just one person inside and one outside.

It's one of the new recruits. Not exactly the most martial, but notably carrying a stun baton on his hip. He looks like one of the engineering staff or miscellaneous personnel, not a pilot or one of the guards. “Hey bud, got you some food from the buffet.” He calls out as he enters. You sit on the floor, clutching your stomach, doing your best to look owlishly miserable, “Buddy, you okay?” He asks.

“N-no. Stomach...I need to go but the toilet's clogged...” You shake your head.

“Eesh, let me just...” He puts the food down and walks into the bathroom, “Aw heck, the plunger's broken! Right, I'll take you to the one off the bar, but only because you're one of us. The Admiral's orders are not to let you off the ship.” The crewman sighs, and gestures for you to follow him, “...But if you try to run or anything the First Mate said I can poke you with this.” He pats the butt of his shiny new collapsible stun baton, “Maybe I should call her first.” This is probably the only time this guy has been important ever in his life.

“Do you want me to go on the FLOOR?” You groan.

He holds his hands up, “Okay, okay! You win! C'mon buddy, I'll show you the way.” He waves off the guard at the door, who looks a lot more grizzled and has an autogun, insisting, “No, no, it's FINE, he just needs to go to the bathroom. Besides, he's just a kid, what harm can he do?”

You smile while still pretending your stomach hurts, and follow him to the nearest lavatory. It's a public one, with multiple toilets. “Okay, buddy.” He insists, “I'll stay right out here outside the stall, and you just...handle your business, okay?”

For a brief moment, he turns his back.

It turns out it's a lot harder knocking people unconscious in a single blow than Roarke Starwind makes it look, despite Clemmy extensively reviewing the technique with you.

“Hey! Ow! Buddy, stop that!” He tries to cover his head as you hit him again.

“I'm sorry! I'm really sorry, but I have to save Naomi!” You reply.

“Who?” He goes reeling, but stays on his feet, “Sorry buddy, I can't just let you go. Things are about to get dangerous!” He draws his stun baton, extends it with a flourish, and attacks.

“C'mon buddy, I don't want to do this.” He complains. Despite clearly being a rookie it's a damned good lucky swing that nearly clips you, but you duck just under it and smack him across the head again with the butt of your shortsword.

“Buddy c'mon, you'll get in trouble!” He protests, wiping blood away from a busted lip and making puppy dog eyes at you. You relentlessly whack him again, but he keeps his feet. It's like smacking a fucking bear. He tries to swing back at you, but it's clear he's watched two many simflicks, his moves are all telegraphed, and after training with Clemmy it's trivial to dodge them. Normally, the crackle of a stun baton does a number on people's nerves, but training with Clemmy builds up a resistance to being terrified too.

“Look, buddy, I know that she's important, whoever she is...” THWACK, you smack him, “But...” This time he jumps up onto the sink, your attack swinging wide, “But we're your friends, buddy. Boss Longshadow said you'd go try to fight all the Avalonians and me, well, I may just be 'Dave from Engineering', but...you matter to me, buddy! C'mon, can't we just...” He swings wildly at you, “Can't we just not fight?”

You dance back out of his reach and reverse your shortsword, as if to sheathe it, “Yeah, Dave...we can.”

He smiles. It's a relaxed, happy smile, and he looks away as he goes to put his baton back in its sling too, “Thanks pal, I knew you'd see reaso-”

You twist the handle of your shortsword just so, and it springs out into spear mode, the butt conking him on the temple and sending him sprawling. You relieve him of his stun baton carefully, so as to avoid hurting him, and make sure he won't drown in the sink. “Sorry Dave. You're a good guy, buddy, but Naomi's the best girl.” Fortunately, his long hair gives him a bit of padding. He should be fine.

You feel something in your pocket, and go to examine it. It's a small tube of fast-drying glue you use for modeling.

>[Cut off his hair with your monospear, construct a false beard]

Alright now how are we going to get onto the Avalonian ship without being spotted by the Kestrels or stopped by the Jovians/Avalonians?

Stow away on an avalonian lighter.

This is incredibly annoying, I still can't find any semi-recent Caesar stats.

Smuggle in on a Avalon shuttle?
>>

>>
>>1337690
>>1337685
But how are we going to get to the shuttle? I mean Roakre has a lot of security for this event and made sure that people know Caesar isn't supposed to be out of his room. The Jovians know exactly what we look like and who we are. And the Avalonians aren't going to let anyone on their ships for fear of saboteurs or assassins.
>>
>>1337701

I'm seriously not very sure. Already im wondering if its possible to hijack some stealth MP soul mech for this since.

i'm sure that Victor doesn't know who she is. Considering the amount of secrecy and the fact that it wasn't the countess who took her.

how would he know what the lady looks like? almost no one has met with her. If Victor has seen her it was only in pictures. and there's alot of people out there, maybe she just looks similar.

You have the idea of constructing a false beard, but...

...but you can't do that to Dave. He earned his luxurious locks. Jove damn, he was trying to protect you, and he was just following orders. If anyone in this galaxy is an innocent, it's Dave from Engineering. He's not even a proper guard! Besides, he took those hits like a champ. You remove his jacket and pillow it under his head quickly. Unlike in the movies, you know you only have a few minutes before he wakes up, you didn't hit him hard enough to cause brain damage.

With his collapsible stun baton in hand and your more dangerous monospear safely stowed, you sneak out of the bathroom and down the hall.

You're spotted more than once, unfortunately, but...nobody seems to notice. After all, there are a lot of new people here and the Admiral hasn't exactly given everyone a copy of your picture. Clad in Kestrel black, with the requisite jacket, shades, the the common but not mandatory blue pants Admiral Starwind favors, you don't stick out.

Someone does, though. You see her eating alone at the bar as you try to navigate your way to an exit. Pale-skinned, blonde, and deadly as a stiletto...but right now, she looks a little sad, like something unpleasant is on her mind. Your teacher, Alice Clementine Farragut, sighs into her salad.

>>

Your being pedantic, there is no reason why an Avalonian wouldn't know what their living God looks like.
>>
>>1337833
Ooh, this is difficult. We could ask for Clemmy's help, but it'd be better not to be spotted.

On the other hand, she probably could find us quickly.
>>
>>1337833
>[Avoid her, she's just too goddamn dangerous]

Do not approach the Clemmy!
>>
>>1337782
Victor never saw the Lady personally and I don't even knows if he knows about the kidnapping or Ceasar, as Lori can't even recognize Ceasar...

And Akai isn't a greenman worshipper per se, and would pressure Victor into helping... Or doing it behind his back to not involve him with the mess anyway... Or at least is this is how I see it, Wong my disagree.

But the "Burningu Rabu!" theory could work in theory.
>>
>>1337833
>>[Avoid her, she's just too goddamn dangerous]
>>
>>1337850
Remember Clemmy knows why we're not supposed to leave our room and what we would plan on doing. She will probably try to talk us out of it because even though she knows we love her we can't risk losing him and having Avalon think its Roarke trying to pull something shady. The more Kestrels we get involved with this the worse its going to look for Roarke.
>>

>>[Avoid her, she's just too goddamn dangerous]
She is probably going to side with Roarke, don't risk it.

dude, every church i've been in has a different looking Jesus, one had him shown as like 6.5 feet tall and weighting 250 pounds. he looked like he could do squats with his cross and he carried it. who's to say that the Avalonians have a singular depiction of a reclusive goddess.
>>
>>1337875

>>1337881
Because she's living and has been seen by people in recent history.
>>
>>1337846
I don't know, Wong mentioned about how mysterious and far from the public eye she usually is.
Also, he won't know she is the Lady clone until he sees her anyway, and we don't need to carry Victor all the way through the mission.

But to be fair... Would this idea even cross Ceasar's mind? Why would he trust a guy who he only saw in TV? And would he even know about the sugary romance going on?

Risky, but frankly we aren't pulling this thing off without help.
>>
This is an important decision, so...taking an hour to get my dinner. At 12:30 I'll collect the votes, and ask another equally important question.
>>
>>1337918
Why not try and get help from someone who isn't a Kestrel then? The more Kestrels get involved the more likely Avalon is going to see this as a plot by Roarke. Besides I doubt Clemmy is going to betray her husbands trust like that as much as she might want to help.
>>
>>1337924
I'll go ahead and ask a series of questions then. Feel free to leave them until after the thread.

Is the arena the tournament's being held in now under gravity? And if it is, how does the Blitz get across the trenches?
>>
>>1337833
Go big or go home

>[Talk to her, maybe you could enlist her in the cause of love]
>>
>>1337898
the thing is, we have very few allies and getting in by ourselves will end badly. With Clemmy we may fail, but we have a life line and someone we can tell the others in the worst case. Like it or lump it, she does trust us and we trust her.
>>
>>1337944
I agree. there should be lots of independents around to watch the tourney. or even recruiting some trustworthy jovians,

>>
>>1337944
Well, assuming Wong don't decide that you're wrong the Burning Love plan...

What about just hijacking the K-Swordfish and going to duel the Duke?

Or if we can't get a tern anyway(and why would the Avalonians let us board?) why not steal the Ulfberth from under Karen's nose? She seems to already have repaired a lot of the tourney mechs... So maybe its ready for flight at least, then we go there and pretend that our comm systems are damage and board the hangar.

From there on, however, this will be a crazy gold rush with a 140CP mech or maybe on feet...
>>
>>1337969
Am I the only contestant bending the rules like this? I feel kinda bad about it.
>>
>>1337958
You can trust somebody and then not think its a good idea to ask for their help. I mean how do you think its going to look if not only a Kestrel but one of Roarke's wives are trying to steal someone from under Avalon's nose. And how do you think Roarke will react when he hears that Clemmy disobeyed him and caused political issues with Avalon? In character its very likely Caesar would know how bad this will reflect on the Kestrels if he gets caught and would want to distance himself from them.
>>
>>1337969

Actually, let me think about this a little. I did say the hovertank used electromagnetic repulsors, after all.
>>
>>1337986
Except this situation could go badly either way and can be spun a matter of ways. Going in without anyone knowing is a bad idea because it means we cannot react properly or assist. Getting her in the end will cause a political incident anyways. Saying before or after won't change much once we succeed.
>>
>>1337986
If you want to go full hotblooded, we can always fly with a spacesuit and a jetpack to the ship and invade it under the Oliver's nose.

All or nothing style, he would need to roll to grab us with penalties anyway if he tried to stop us(using his weapons would be even harder), and could overlook something as small as a person in middle of space anyway depending on the angle we use.

But this is Akai's levels of space madness.

Dutch... The Avalonians stole her first... And she already was a Kestrel at that time...
The political incident already happened, we aren't fighting over it just for diplomatic reasons, but we wouldn't be the bad guys for trying it.

And Ceasar working alone? Even the Duke would see it for what it is: A boy trying to rescure the girl he loves.

But you know what? I think I already knows what will happen.... Naomi is going to convince him to go to Avalon with her, and then things will get REAL CRAZY.

But they will need to survive the three-way betrayal battle royale that is going to happen anyway before it comes to happen.
>>
>>1338022
Yes it will, sending her a text before we head out saying "On an Avalonian ship to save Naomi" is a different thing then going up and asking her to be a part of this plan. Its the difference between Aiding and Abetting and being an Accomplice to a crime.

Dunno who could and would help though.

Let's list out or options.

Victor and Not!Solaire with the complicated name I didn't bother remembering to spell are out, being branwashed Greenman cucks. They're out.
Skunk would just torch Naomi. Out.
Katherine would just go with whatever Rosita wanted. Out.
The mercs might help if they knew if wouldn't get them kicked out of the Kestrels. So almost certainly out.
Walter might help if Caesar has a secret Eurobeat stash. Maybe.
Finn would probably bisect her, if he got past doing a lone, on foot charge at the Avalonian ship. Out, but unmatched style points.
Inari and Marciana might just do the "helpful old lady thing. Maybe.
Akai would probably help if Caesar promised some candy and/or weeb merch. If she can keep it from Cuck #1. I mean Victor.
Maybe Mai would help if Caesar called her cute or something? Probably?

Okay... Auditorium seem to be the final choice...

I'm going to vanish for a bit, meanwhile, who should we go after.

I really want to see Ceasar reunited with Soul C... But this could end even worse if we attack with UJCIDF mechs, and we don't know how they would react to all the "I'm dating the Lady's clone" thing...

Using the tourney's losers mechs could work too, or even getting some of them on our side, as they are independent agents (or at least would be more probably seem as such), but we don't have much reason to trust them, even if using their mechs would probably be more easier than hijacking a tern.

The Avalonians could indirectly help by letting Cesar use their mechs and acess codes and pretending that he just stole them, because of "muh honor" of letting the boy rescue his girlfriend(If he manages to not tell them about who his girlfriend is.)
Walter is a mercenary like the rest... Would it really risk their positions in the kestrels? they aren't kestrels yet anyway.
The old ladies could be nice... But they also have no reason to get involved and marciana is a Noble who could get caught up in problems depeding on what we do with her mech.

Akai would do it for fun... But she would charge Ceasar anyway.
I doubt Mai would do it for any reason.

>>1338244
I really want to see SOUL C complete in action again... But imagine what could happen if they just hijacked a tern Black Ops style like last time? And more, why would the Avalonians let them in anyway even if they did?
Well... Maybe Garret could come up with something using his authority...
Wait, this could be a nice idea.

What about asking Garret to visit the ship with them as his personal guard? And Meanwhile he is talking to the countess or whatever, Cesar breaks apart from the group and sneaks around!

What go wrong!?
>>
>>1338284
I hope you get better soon Wong... Thanks for running man, it was a honor to be able of being a part of this again.
>>
>>1338293
Steal an Avalonian uniform and sneak onto the ship, or have soul c cause a distraction and have people deal with that while Caesar sneaks onto the ship.
>>
I can still discuss stuff and maybe slowly write a plot post or two, but I don't consider it "running" unless I'm sitting, at my desk, at my laptop, being responsive and active. Sorry, guys. I blame the Chinese.
>>
GUYS

What do you think about using Garret's name and money to fake an audience with the Duke?

Then we could get in and save Naomi by pretending to go to a bathroom, again!

I mean... Didn't the Duchess want to talk to him anyway? They probably can't kidnap him at this point anyway, could they? What could go wrong?
>>
>>1338321
How well know is Caesar's face by the people on the Duke's ship?
>>
>>1338306
>>1338315
Well, flying there on a non standard Avalonian mech would be very visible and be suicide, so we have to sneak in on an Avalonian craft of some kind.

That could be helped with a distraction from anyone willing to do it, but that depends on how well the Avalonians check their cargo and whatnot.

>>1338326
Or we might be able to do this. But if we get found out, they're in some deep shit.
>>
>>1338330
I'm not Wong, but the Duke didn't get to see his face during that battle, only heard him through the comms.
So unless he got intel on him from Hastur or Naomi, he probably wob't recognize him.

Also... How would we even be able of knowing how far he knows?
>>
>>1338330

None of them have ever seen him. For that matter, none of them know what his dad looks like, either, although a mech with a giant lance and monohorn might raise some red flags among the older ones...or it might not, because Avalonian mecha love their lances and some copy the monohorn design just because it looks badass.
>>
>>1338336
We could shadow the entrance to the ship and wait till we see someone come shore side and then knock them out and steal their uniform and then go on the transport.
>>
Just out of curiosity, and I'm not saying that I have anything planned for this, but which of Roarke's waifus do you think would actually be willing to help?
>>
>>1338344
Maybe Karen, she was a love sick girl who would do anything for the man she loves for most of her teens and she isn't as politically savvy to know how bad of an idea this is politically unlike the rest of the waifus.
>>
>>1338344
Sam and Clemmy would be on board
Fatima wouldn't
Karen might, but she has mechs to fix.
>>
>>1338336
I call this plan: "G: The money of SOUL and Avalonian control."
>Garret talks to Magnarus about how he heard that his countess is the apprentice of the Duchess(Ceasar overheard this if I'm not mistaken, in one of Lori's scenes) and how the Duchess wanted to talk to him before she got captured and him wanting to talk to the Avalonians because of this special situation and etc...
>Blue Knight and his "personal guard"(Simon and Ceasar) go with him "just fo formality".
>Cesar fakes having a belly ache, again.
>Following Cesar's suggestion(from whatever Cesar knows about the time Roarke met the Duke) Garret gets the Duke talking about ancient avalonian history.
>The Duke just won't shut up about it as the huge history nerd he is.
>Meanwhile, Cesar is duking it out with another Rothchild... I mean... Sneaking around.
>Find and save Naomi.
>"Oh no, how could I know that the new guy was the son of Rudolph Merrow himself with a revenge to take on the avalonians? I never could have know that as I was in Space Vietnyan this whole time!"
>RUN CEASAR, RUN!
>????
>Profit.

Bonus point if he manages to discover the avalonians secret plan while doing that.
>>
>>1338376
No way would Sam help, she doesn't like Avalon at all and is friends with Naomi but she would realize that now wasn't the time for it.
>>
>>1338344
I was also thinking Karen. Maybe Clemmy..

Also, I would be okay with Walter helping Caesar if it comes down to it, especially if Caesar told Walter it's for his girlfriend. Want to see some shenanigans.
>>
>>1338344
In order of likelyhood...
Sam, to hurt the Avalonian's morale.
Karen. I just have a feeling she would want to.
Rosita because it would be a great heist.
Clemmy because she's a nice, good girl.
Then there's Lori and Fatima, who almost certainly won't help. Lori because spores, Fatima because she'll want to kill Naomi herself.
>>
>>1338344
Fatima. Parallels between Roarke rescuing her and us rescuing Naomi. Point out that she was only okay because she wasn't mind controlled for long and Naomi might not have much time left if any.
>>
>>1338344
Sam, because she risks everything for love.
Karen... Because she could just do it indirectly and knows very well what is like to have great obstacles in the way of your love.
Maybe Clemmy, depending on how right or wrong Oda was about the yandere thing.
Rosita wouldn't risk everything because this is the worst time to do it(and would potentially ruin her wedding and fun).
I don't know about how Lori would react, bit I bet she wouldn't help as Naomi is a soldier and knew the risks of getting involved in this war(And she doesn't know and potentially doesn't believe in the brainwash thing).
Fatima wouldn't risk everything that is going on at this point just to save the Lady's clone, that she probably would rather kill.
>>
>>1338382
Does anyone have an opinion about this plan? Even a simple "No, don't do this." could help us getting forward with this.
>>
Hey Wong, what have Duncan and Cornelius been up to lately? Its been a while since we've seen either of them? And how is Master Asia dealing with all these people on the colony when he needs to go get liquor?
>>
>>1338382
Hmm, it's something, although if we end up fighting Dayve the Avalonian Engineer, that could be horrible.
>>
>>1338382
He would send a guard or two with us to the bathroom and if we somehow got away from them and ran into anyone else we would immediately be detained for trespassing.
>>
>>1338438
will Caesar stumble upon Colonel Sturn having a spirited game of checkers with a Tiger?
>>
>>1338344
Worse idea - Fairchild. Screw over Avalon, and drive a wedge between them and Roarke, and piss Roarke off. She might go for it.

Also just thinking about our blackmail regarding 16-psych it might be worth using that as negotiation leverage with Fairchild to keep Lori and Naomi instead. Despite being the worst human ever, she has been shown to be capable of working with us like in the battle where we lost Naomi even though she a crazy bitch.

Cloning is crazy tabo, and we have evidence of her being involved with the clones of psych-16. Or forced bred genestock from women like the ones the green skulls which is still super fucking bad. They themselves are the evidence, and are too notable to be disappeared especially the ones in the military.

By offering to help her keep it secret though, we aren't protecting her but those girls who were used and now are in the goddamn JCIDF. Might strike her in an unexpected place.
>>
>>1338468
I would rather keep it as an ace in the hole to stop a plan of hers rather than a bargaining chip. Like save it for if she decides to declare war or invade us.
>>
>>1338446
>" sorry mon ami, I can't let you seeThe Lady, thing are about to get dangerous!"
>>
>>1338413

A point about Loriette. You don't HAVE to frame it as "I want to re-kidnap Naomi." You could also frame it as "I want to see Naomi." We know that Caesar is a massive threat

>>1338438

Those two specifically are getting 16-Psyche up and running again. I remember someone calculated how many tourney mecha could be produced from there each day, but I forget the specifics.
>>
>>1338516

Er, we know Caesar is a massive threat, the Avalonians don't. If you'll recall, the Duke actually likes Caesar quite a lot and thinks he's a spirited kid who's unfortunately on the wrong side and can't help being Rudolph Merrow's son.
>>
>>1338516
If that's the case, Lori can actually be quite the asset.
>>
>>1338539
If we go that route than Avalon knows we're meeting up with Naomi and stealing her away will be next to impossible.
>>
>>1338344
Clem would in a heartbeat.
Karen is a maybe if she isn't busy helping out with the tourney.
Fatima wouldn't because the act would be detrimental to the negotiations after Space Jam
Sam's heart says go, but she'll try to stop Caesar if he goes in without a concrete plan.
Siren is a maybe because she's a romantic but this cuts into her limelight with Roarke
Lori is a flat no.
>>
>>1338344
Hear me out - Bruce. Kelly. Tell him they called him Friend.
>>
>>1338605
I wonder did Harlock take Pommade back to Bruce for some good old revenge? We still need to go convince him to come join our crew, maybe offer to split some loot if he comes on a mission or two with us as an independent contractor?
>>
>>1338612
"How would you like to violate Fairchild?"
>>
>>1338618
Would be easier to just offer him all the Vegemite he can eat.
>>
Feeling better, can run a while longer if people are still here. Maybe an hour or so.
>>
>>1338624
that requires us to have vegemite. Aussies know when we have it or not.
>>
>>1338629
Do it

>>1338631
It can't be that hard to make, put Karen on the job.
>>
>>1338629

>>1338574

Lori might be pliable if we lie to her that we just want to see her.

You make your way out of the Rhinehawk, your heart beating so fast you're amazed it doesn't tear your skin. You're having a little trouble keeping calm. You didn't stop to talk to Clemmy, who you suspect would bundle you right back into your room and guard you personally, both because of Roarke's orders and because of the danger you're undoubtedly throwing yourself into. You're lucky there's such a crowd, but as you make your way onto the colony and out of its spaceport, that thins out a little.

You've had enough time to explore Auditorium, you know it fairly well, but...you're not sure where to go or what to do. Somewhere, there have to be Knights that accompanied this battleship here, and where they are, you know there has to be some way to steal a uniform and infiltrate the battleship itself. It's the parts of this plan in between here and there that elude you as you skulk along with your hands in your pockets. You don't know Avalonian SOP, or how they identify themselves, there are a million things you could do wrong.

On the other hand, Mohammed got away with it. On a Jovian vessel. Under your very nose. Despite having thought it was hilarious later, that makes you feel just a little bit competitive. You don't like losing. No, you don't like it at all. You adjust your shades the way you've seen Roarke Starwind do, feeling bad about Dave and breaking his sunglasses. It feels more and more like you did something you'll need to pay him back for later. You resolve to do so. It's the right thing to do. You pause, leaning on the rail overlooking the lake, and gaze out at the waters glittering in the artificial light. There are definite signs that Auditorium has a lot more people around than usual, but the roads are pretty clear. People are eating, talking, celebrating with their friends...and with a pang, you wonder where yours are. Mohammed is probably on Kestrel business. Clemmy...you sigh realizing that you were wrong, she probably would have helped you because it's the way she is. Getting her in trouble with Roarke wouldn't have been the right thing to do, though. You stand by your decision on that. Hurting one person who didn't deserve it was enough.

The breeze off the lake feels good. It goes where it wants, unbound by anything but the walls of the colony, beholden to no one and nothing. It carries a strange, rhythmic clacking to your ears, and glancing around, you notice a small lakeside shop. Nothing fancy, it has fuel, groceries, liquor, and a small wharf overlooking the lake with a cover overhanging some tables where people can eat lunch. Two older men are sitting at one of these tables, playing a board game of some kind. One has his back to you, and is wearing a broad straw hat. He has an umbrella with a cane-like handle leaning against the table. His posture is oddly familiar. The other has a small, neat mustache and a long braid.

From here, it looks like they're playing checkers.

You start making your way down the steps towards them, slowly and unhurriedly.

The man with the long braid and mustache glances up at you with disinterest, then back down at the checkerboard.

“Who is it, teacher?” The one in the straw hat asks.

“I never taught you anything, Joseph. You learned it all on your own, somehow. Ours is a debate that will never be solved, whether a weapon can truly be an extension of one's body or not.” The man with the mustache sighs, “Not until you face my newest pupil. It's one of his boys approaching us now to talk to you.”

A lot of things abruptly come into focus. You handle what would be a world-shattering revelation for some a lot better than most. You recognize that voice, for one thing, and the name puts you in mind of something. You'd seen the Colonel draw his sword before, and something about the movement, how precisely he did it, flowing smoothly into a strike without any thought or calculation so that when he didn't instantly attack it was a conscious act of holding back, had always been strangely familiar to you. You can't even begin to count how many times you'd seen it before, to tell the truth, simulated and on a mecha scale. Every time you played Bluegill Joe, you saw that same flash of steel. The only reason you didn't realize it sooner was because, to your mind, it was the proper way to draw.

The other reason it's so easy for you to deal with the knowledge of who you're looking at is a much more simple one. You've seen what overwhelming martial fame can do to a man. You've grown up with it, in the shadow of someone even more famous than Muragi. It holds no awe for you. You've seen a legend bad-tempered and cranky in the morning, with a stiff back and fuzzy slippers on. You've seen him burn his breakfast oatmeal and eat it anyway out of pure stubbornness. You've heard him nag you for not being friendly enough to wealthy, well-born girls who would have made a good match. In a way, as someone who should be Bluegill Joe's biggest fan, you react to meeting him less than anyone else would. After all, you already admired him profoundly as Colonel Stern.

“You speak as if that's a foregone conclusion, but there is no guarantee that fight will ever come to pass. Nor do I desire it to. My sword is for protecting mankind, and the UJCIDF, not for winning matches and glory.” The Colonel makes a move, “King me, Master Shen.”

“Sharp-eyed brat.” The old man with the mustache grumbles, “I remember a time when you were more eager to prove yourself.”

“I remember a time when there was a girl we were all trying to impress, a time when more of my friends were still alive.” The Colonel counters, “And of the ones that are left, most of them I feel as though I barely know.” He takes a piece.

“If I lose many more matches, I won't have enough left to feed Domon. Don't you have any respect?” The old man grumbles more, before taking three of the Colonel's pieces in one move.

“Your cat surely eats less than we orphans did, teacher.” The Colonel responds humbly, then turns around. You see the glint of his eye beneath his hat, and a sudden sense of coldness and tension assails you, a feeling of danger so palpable that your skin breaks out into goosebumps. Your weapons might as well be a million miles away, “Ensign Merrow.”

“Y-yes sir.” You salute him awkwardly, sweating. Why are you so terrified.

“So, you decided to betray Jupiter and everything your father sacrificed to protect.” The sense that you are about to die recedes slightly, and the Colonel shakes his head, slowly and sadly, “What am I supposed to say to you? Or to him? We still talk, you know.”

>Tell my father...tell him that my path is my own, not his' to choose, and certainly not Fairchild.
>>
“Tell him the truth, then.” The words come out so calm, so crisp, for a moment you think it's your father's voice...and not the way he was when you got older, but the way you remember him when you were a young boy, and your mother was still around, “I sacrificed everything to protect what I care about, and now I need your help to take her back.”

He looks at you, then shakes his head, “He never told you the truth, did he? Out of kindness, and out of respect, I'll keep what you just said secret. Otherwise, I fear what your father would do. It's the repetition of an old, sad story, where all but one of the participants had the best of intentions.”

“I couldn't just stand by and watch them attack the woman I loved. Her only crime was being born. I didn't want to leave the military, I just...” You protest.

“...Just got caught in circumstances bigger than you, where you had to turn against all you believed in for the sake of someone precious, right?” The Colonel smiles sadly, “Yes. I remember the last time that happened. I remember how it ended, too. It was the last time your father ever felt joy, piloting his beloved Swordfish. The Green Men understand love. I believe they can feel it, which was never a popular viewpoint, but that's the only explanation for why they can use it to manipulate us so well. It's like a chemical equation. Mix A with B in certain proportions, and you'll always get C.”

“Not quite.” The old man disagrees, “She was gone, Joe. She was gone and he couldn't accept it, and when they said they could give her back to him...”

“Maybe they could. I've never been able to live in the comfortable illusion that we understood everything they were capable of.” The Colonel shakes his head slowly, sad as an ancient willow tree.

“I'm still here, you know. You know what else? For my entire life, people have been treating me like the second Rudolph Merrow, like I'm my father all over again. Normally, it's a compliment, but it's still a lie, and to even hear you two talking as if this is part of a cycle...it's a disappointment, frankly, sir. I'll walk my own path. I have no intention of living in his shadow.”

“And that is all the proof I need that you're his son. Rudolph always was that way. Too independent to really act like an older brother, the way Leroy Vinland and Floyd did.” The Colonel picks up a cup from the table and takes a long sip, “There's a trap that's been baited for you, Heinrich. It's one I've seen before. There's a story I'd like to tell you. It's sad, it's depressing, and it will ruin your faith in humanity's greatest heroes, but once you've heard it it may give you some insight on what to do next. Or maybe it will just ruin your determined mood. I make no guarantees. Are you interested? I won't say it's a bad idea to just leave, it might even be the smart thing to do.”

>>1338865
Wonder how we going to deal with raiding during peace time when the Jovians can focus on us. Maybe figure out a way to start raiding in other systems.
>>
>>1338841

As much of a stereotypical pirate thing as that is, right now people want to join you and are having discipline problems from trying to prove they're good enough, not mutinying out of dissatisfaction and trying to oust you. It helps that you have such a good support structure of people who can come down like a sledgehammer on dissent and that they're ace pilots backed by your senior crew.
>>
>>1338867
>These are space pirates, not the smartest or nicest bunch of people.

>join up with a cult of personality
>just so you can mutiny
>>
>>1338841

Oh, also, if you mean small-scale matters of law and discipline, that's Miles and Richard's purview. This ensures that the Captain (Admiral, in your case) isn't hated for being strict and is also unbothered by day-to-day concerns to focus more on the grand scheme of what you want to achieve.
>>
>>1338867

Hence why we're actually shifting gears to actually creating a functional nation state instead of a pirate fleet.

It'll be up just in time for peace time so that we can tax and levy investments and mining efforts set up in the belt and get duties from trade vessels plying through our area of space.

Anything that doesn't pay and intrudes is on open season.
>>
>>1338841
Simple. We've just expanded ourselves, and we got a hefty payout from Allahu Snacksbar. We really haven't recruited any Space pirate gangs that are as bad as the Green Skulls (Lost boys at 16-Psyche don't count because they aren't Iron Kestrels.)

We're swimming in gravy at the moment and not a single one of our Captains are dissatisfied with us. Wait till the money dries up and at least one Captain unhappy with his share to see how fast mutiny occurs.
>>
>>1338875
>on a colony run by Red Siren

That's actually one of the few ways a mutiny could happen, Red Siren fans dissatisfied with the merger with the Kestrels. You don't know if or how Red Siren clamped down on that to keep it from happening, but it hasn't, and considering the fact that you're extremely well-liked on Auditorium for your role in saving Red Siren from the Green Skulls and generally being a big hero it's unlikely to happen in the future. Mutinies happen when the crew is unhappy, not when they're swimming in wealth.
>>
>>1338883

It also helps that your immediate subordinate Captains are your wife and your best friend. You've also done right by Flint and Beckingham by giving the former responsibilities and the latter a chance for vengeance and the return of his old friend. Then there's Mudd, whose career would have been done and who now has a glance at importance and glory entirely due to you giving him a chance. Any new Captain who wants to complain would need to get in line behind these five. If the money dries up, a bigger problem is crews independently raiding and causing PR problems.
>>
>>1338875
I doubt alot of our crews like us taking in a Paladin and a bunch of Greenmen worshipers.

>>1338880
Do you really think that most pirates are going to be okay with that switch in life style?
>>
>>1338905

It's gonna happen. They can get with the program or get shit on by those who do.

Considering that since our last meeting with the pirate captains had them vaguely approving of this direction of a nationstate and that we personally know and are friends with most of the aces and mech pilot monsters, if'll be a fairly big curbstomp if they dont play ball.
>>
>>1338905
>Do you really think that most pirates are going to be okay with that switch in life style?

As long as they are getting paid they'll get used to it. Exceptions being oddballs and psychopaths like Oda and whatever your dude's name was. I can't remember his name because I want to call him Rolf.

Other than people like that they'd probably not give as big a fuss.
>>
>>1338905
they can take a stable paycheck, or they can take a bullet. Their choice
>>
>>1338905
Also, AFAIK, most space pirates aren't space pirates for funsies, 'cept for Oda. Most of them are either Sidereal War vets who aren't important enough to reintegrate to peacetime society, or displaced refugees unable to secure a steady income.

For someone working with Fairchild Joe sure is fucking glib about calling people traitors. We just want to live with her, who's the one who put her in the jove-damn military?

You know, excluding all the other shit she's done.

For a bunch of old men who cry about the brutality of the last war, Joseph and Josiah seem to be doing their best to fight this one just like the last regardless of whether or not they have to.

Like they're unable to stop. I say fuck 'em. If they want to stand by and let injustice happen just so they can be the last one standing by virtue of being the meanest bastard, by giving up their humanity, by being like fucking Fairchild, then fuck 'em. We grew up to close to a legend to think they can't make mistakes already. They can tell us their story, and then we can tell them to fuck off one more time.
>>
>>1338903
I've been re-reading the archives for fun. Remember when you said Miles in another life would be an excellent Politician? Could we just, sort of, maybe give her a list of hard demnds or tell her what we want out of the negotiations and make the relative ambassadors deal with her first before we talk to them? Or play as her? She wants to Bully them, Wong. She wants to Bully them so bad. Let her Bully. She's a Bully, Wong, and that's Okay. One pic related but I'm on mobile traveling in the best damn Nation on Earth. Side note - it's fucking weird how I like this place more than the citizens it seems. Soft fucking cunts here in AZ.

Also just how good is our blackmail from 16-psych? Like it seems pretty fucking bad to me from the logs but last thread some people seemed to think it wouldn't be that damaging.
>>
>>1339041
...Miles bullying fairchild. Left to her own devices, unrestrained, and with everyone present knowing she's speaking as our first mate and an attack on her is an attack on us...
Do...do you think she could make Fairy cry?
>>
>>1339065
Keep in mind that Miles would also be representing us. So we would have to prepare to step in and look reasonable, oh so reasonable, by comparison.

Then we tell them that if they don't aquiesce to our demands then we will instead ask for a full pardon for Miles and send her to them.

Oh! Idea about Lori. If we give her to Mars AFTER marrying Fatima, could we swing it so she's under our supervision? Gotta be something we can bribe them with. Maybe her Mars Based holdings and a treat of Alliance and allowing prosletyzing in the Belt?

Anyone here willing to make a political conversion to Islam? Try to separate from your instinctive distaste IRL.

>Roarke not living as he wants for his whole life.
NO.
JUST NO.
>>
>>1339076
The more I look at your ideas, the more I disagree with them. Miles is a loose cannon and Fairchild is good at being a manipulative bitch. Non canon parallel universes aside, that does not mean she is capable of handling her.
In terms of Joe, he really isn't doing it by choice. Red tape is tying him up like christmas present and any actions he desired to do are likely messed up by Fairchild. Remember, she's got a lot of pull in the senate. Even if he disagreed, he could do nothing about.
By the sounds of it, it seems more like he's saying 'Hey, don't be a lone wolf and do something completely by instinct. It did not go well for your father and cost him many things he held dear.'
As for the blackmail? It will not be as damning to Fairchild as it seems, but it could be used against King.
Also, no to converting to islam. Trying to convert to a religion politically requires it to be stable and generally non-restrictive. Islam does both. Besides, I am not giving up bacon sandwiches.
>>
>>1339083
POLITICAL conversion. We would just make some public gesture. Maybe have an Islamic wedding, then occasionally preach the virtue of Martian wives while insisting our raids are just a tax on Infidels.

Meanwhile we could mobilize Mars for an attack on Earth to steal the Holy Land back and cripple them fighting Earth.
>>
>>1339088
Literal word of God Miles is a political talent.

And I said to remember this isn't real life Islam but Hakim Islam. It would also just be political so neither Roarke nor You would give up bacon.

As for Ceaser I was trying to think what a young man crazed with love who had recently been bitterly betrayed by his Nation and who was the son of one of their heroes would say when getting slapped down by another Hero who was complicit by doing nothing (as.far as Ceaser knows, he doesn't have the same relationship with Stern as Roarke) at the least.

Fairchild also, you would note, would be protecting her clone niece's if we bargain with her, not herself.

The knowledge of the clones alone would trigger a witch-hun, especially since the Green Men are back via Avalon and Space Vietnam.

>>
>>1339088
Final note before checking out Tortilla Flats, I think it would be funnier having Miles talk to the Martians and Avalon while terrorizing Fairchils staff, while we intervene when Fairchild starts baiting Miles.

Once again, though, word of Wong that she would be good at politics.

< Namefags

I think Wong encouraged them for entertainment after the Waifu wars died down.
>>
>>1339076
They might see it as an insult since we were the ones who invited them to bargain with us for Lori, besides whose to say Miles being the impulsive badger she is will do something super impulsive.
>>
>>1339167
Nah. We just let them enjoy Miles company while never outright stating that she's representing us. Authority without responsibility.

Besides, let me point out that we're technically the head of state for the belt after our declaration so it's also a way for them to be subtly reminded of that. We aren't seeing the Sultan or President here. Avalon is a bit of a special case but if anything they would understand heirarchy like that.

Of course coming in and taking over sends another message about us being the one in control, and that we have that control on lockdown. It also gets Miles some cred as a member of our heirarchy and makes it seem less like we're the only thing holding the Belt together. I'd really like the other Captains and the governor of whatever colonies there are to be involved in some way. Make it so we're negotiating on behalf of the belt, not the pirate Roarke Starwind.

We really do need to steal or seduce a Wels class though.

Also side note - with other Generals here like Hateshput Fairchild can't be too bitchy and throw the negotiations or else we could just request to deal with Hateshput instead, citing our more productive history with working together.

Also side note about converting - I don't really expect Roarke to be for it, but not super strongly against it either, and I do expect it to be something the Mars ambassadors bring up given he's marrying Fatima, and their political situation with Jove, and their religious tenents. So it would be worth discussing how far Roarke would go with it to protect Lori, and also gain a powerful all and protection against Jovian interests, as well as access for the belt to legitimate markets, and finally access to out of system transportation unless we're building our own moon sized gate against the wishes of pretty much everyone.

Also, I do like the namefags in the quest. Overall they've been fun and really added to it. At the same time, I can't help feel that using trips during conversation makes it more "their game with Wong" then a game on /tg/. I don't want them to sound overly bitchy about it.

Your right about it, but don't worry most should stop after the tourney is done

And I doubt Roarke would convert since he isn't the type just to believe something because he sees it as beneficial, he usually goes with his heart on these matters. If we do send Miles we should have the room bugged to hear everything happening inside and step in if something is happening.

Miles might have the morality and personality of a particularly amoral stoat, but she's a natural at working the streets and gathering information, and bizarrely talented at handling paperwork. In another life, she might have made a truly superb politician...but thankfully the galaxy has been spared from Planetary Chairwoman Miles Longshadow and she's an Iron Kestrel instead.

Yeah I don't see it happening either really. But then we don't know what the offer could be, or how Fatima might react, and it could be a good way to flesh out Roarkes religious stance besides "Try not to think about Oda".

Best ending? Muslim Rock Off to determine if they have come up with anything that can stand up to the Old God's of the 80s.

"/qst/ won't harm the player base and other memes."

But for all the bitching of questfags and bitchfags that didn't like it, it was clearly a move by Hiroshimoot to expand the work safe monetizable section of the board and try to maximize ad space. The more boards you're on the more targeted advertising he can make. Especially with General threads (if the site wasn't cancer). Great opportunity to turf specific products or their competition. Note the removal first of ERP, the WST, and finally Quests.

It's no longer about mods, but money.

It did really reduce the overall quality of a lot of player base especially for new quests. But hey! At least 40Kids and cardfags and rollplayers also decreased.

I will miss those 8 guys autistically raging about quests though. And for one last burst of spite they also lost a ton of drawfags and guys who "get stuff done".

I mean as someone who plays IRL it was not a huge loss for /tg/ to crap itself but it is kind of sad as well as fulfilling.

“I can take it, I have to.” You respond. “No matter whose image it ruins in my mind. I want to see the galaxy as it really is, without any more illusions.”

“You were always a good soldier, Caesar. Maybe that was the problem. Our system, sometimes, produces people too upstanding to follow it.” The Colonel sighs, looking very old and tired, “You've grown up hearing the rumors, and from how you acted when I was training you on board the Cincinnatus, I could see you never believed them. It's true, your father, no matter what sort of man he is today, was never someone who would kill a comrade of his for the sake of glory. Indeed, he let Floyd take the spotlight because he believed Floyd made a better public symbol, which was what the people needed. He'd let the credit for some of his own deeds...and a lot of Ji's, because the NaNa project was classified and the higher-ups didn't want excess scrutiny on it...fall on Floyd, when really all three were members of a team whose basic makeup and tactical doctrine is key to the SOUL squads employed today. However, he did kill Floyd Beck, he destroyed his power plant and crushed Floyd's cockpit with his own hands as Beck screamed defiance at him over the comms and the fact that he did do it is the reason why he is the hero Jupiter deserved, the reason why he achieves so much fame and yet the specifics of his deeds are so seldom discussed.”

“Ji Xifeng died a true hero. More importantly, she lived as one. She was tireless, brave, with constant wit and a smile that never faltered. She wasn't just a great woman, she was a great person, relatable, martial, and down-to-earth. She was a hero in a practically Hellenic sense, so far above everyone else in terms of skill...at least in those days...that it was practically incomprehensible. She took in the Orange Pekoe kids and made us more than expendable child soldiers. She made us part of her family. In our own way, we all loved her, the five of us. Myself, Belegor, Josiah, Alexander, and Leroy. Especially Leroy. He was willing to compete with Floyd and your father for her, and that took some guts. Even when her own mother worked to cover up the things she did, she took it with a smile and a joke, it was never about fame for her.” The Colonel takes another sip.

“Valerie always was cruel, but losing Ji hurt her too. It's a shame I never knew just how much it hurt her, or what she did about it.” The old man Joseph Muragi calls his teacher, Shen Xifeng, says with a sigh.

The Colonel shakes his head, “The system would have produced people like Hermione Fairchild with or without Valerie Fairchild, teacher. I only hope that the system works well enough for her to be removed. Anyway...” He clears his throat, “Floyd...how do I explain Floyd Beck to someone who never knew him? Floyd was like the sun. Endless warmth, endless light. Always laughing, always fearless. Nothing stopped him, nothing slowed him down. He invented a drone system on his own that technicians from Bahamutcorp and Bucephalus have fought over since I was a boy. His grandfather, Herman Grosse, invented the HMIS and Floyd was an early test subject. Floyd loved Ji with all his heart, but so did your father.”

“Yeah, I know that, everyone does. What was he like back then?” You ask, wondering. You can't imagine your dad as anything but a grumpy old man.

He laughs, “Gallant Rudolph Merrow. So humble and unassuming, yet endlessly reliable. Cool where Floyd was warm, icy where he was hotblooded, and passionately devoted to Ji. Yet they never once fought over her. There was an unspoken agreement that they would settle things when the war ended, and Ji...Ji would have it no other way.”

“So who did she love?” You're curious about that too.

He shrugs, “I don't know. Maybe neither of them. For her, the only thing that mattered was saving humanity. Sometimes, I don't believe a woman like her could bloom anywhere but the battlefield, that when the war was done she would simply have vanished like a mirage. Well, vanish she did, when NaNa-01 became self-aware only to die by her hand. She sent those two one last transmission, but Rudolph never told me what she said to him. It killed something in him, but he never let that stop him, he was too adamant a man for that. Even without a heart, blood pumped through him on sheer, stubborn effort to survive alone.”

“Wait, hold on. One more question. You're General Fairchild's father?” You point at the old man.

Shen Xifeng snorts, “Not a chance. Valerie Fairchild never could stand the fact that Ji chose to go with me and take my name rather than live with her. She was Terran, they're not used to anyone saying no to them. So she did everything she could to ruin her career and stamp out her name...until she died. After that, I believe she felt some kind of regret, and worse, a need to prove to herself that it was her genes and influence, not mine, that made Ji such an exceptional human. I don't know who Hermione's father is, or if she even has a father. All I know is that after the divorce Valerie had another daughter and relentlessly pushed her to succeed at any cost, especially once Ji became famous, even more once Ji passed. I don't know any more details, nor do I want to, but from what I've heard and what my pupil Roarke tells me there is a deep sickness in her spirit. Perhaps she never got to prove herself before Valerie died in that fire a few months before the war ended, perhaps that's what drives her.”

“Oh.” You're confused, but you have a sense that telling you this is as much for their sake as your own.

Colonel Stern clears his throat, “Anyway, after she died, Floyd lost it. It started with drinking, and whores, and other illicit substances. He started wearing the shades, then, that lifestyle gave him bags under his eyes. He got shifted into more of a propaganda role, and high command put more of the work on the Pekoe team and on your father. Belegor had always seem himself as their successor, he may not have led the team but he was already teacher's best student and had a lot of theories about using the mech as an extension of the human spirit, and the added stress affected him differently than the rest of us. He'd lost everything to the Green Men, and worse, he'd seen it happen. I don't remember my parents, and maybe I'm lucky in that. Belegor saw their deaths every night, over and over. At first, he obsessed over surpassing them, over overcoming beings that were above humanity. Over time, that became an obsession with the Green Men themselves. How they worked. How they thought. His desire for strength became almost religious...and so, on one mission, when one of the Green Men tried to talk to him through a human proxy, he stayed his hand long enough to listen.”

“I thought this was about Floyd and my dad and somehow convincing me not to save Naomi.” You grumble. As interesting as this is, you have work to do and you're sure you're already being looked for.

He taps your forehead with the point of his umbrellasword, “Patience is a virtue every warrior must master. To this day, I don't know what the Green Men offered Belegor for his defection. I suspect he got it, Josiah tells me he's a Paladin now and that Alexander's son, Roarke Starwind, was the one who brought it to his attention. Belegor carried a message to Floyd, telling him that if he switched sides the Green Men would bring Ji back to life.”

“That's stupid.” You protest, “Come on, had he seriously never read a book in his life or played any video games? There would be a catch, there's always a catch. She would have had her memories wiped or be enslaved to the Green Men and hating him for it or...or...”

Both old men burst into laughter. Shen Xifeng slaps his knee, “EXACTLY like Rudolph!”

“Almost word for word what he said when they finally faced each other!” Colonel Stern nods, “But Floyd wasn't rational. He wanted her back. Losing her had sent his life into a downward spiral, and so, during a mission...he and Belegor vanished. Only for Floyd to return alone as something much like these new Paladins. His mission was to destroy the Jovian gate, but I believe the true goal was to let the people of Jupiter see their own hero turn against them. Unfortunately for the Green Men, he still had Floyd's heart. He contacted Rudolph and tried to get him to switch sides.”

The Colonel looks up, as if he can still see his old friends somewhere, “Your father, being an extremely intelligent man, set up a meeting and then showed up with us, far out in the asteroid belt. He tried to reason with Floyd, he begged him to stand down and surrender, he was ready to do anything to cover this up and return things to the way they used to be. Floyd, and the Green Man cultists he'd brought with him as backup wouldn't listen, and so...we killed them all. Leroy died, impaled through the cockpit, pinning Thoroughbred-X, Floyd's mech, in place so your father could take the final shot. After that, your dad didn't have the stomach to fight anymore, but he finished the war with a vengeance. It's funny, the historians all say after Floyd's death was when Rudolph Merrow showed his true brilliance as a pilot and became mankind's hero, but I know the truth, he fought the way he did because he was burned out and ready to die. If it wasn't for you being born, I'm not sure what he would have done when things were all over.”

You frown at the implications, “Alright, so you're saying I'm going to end up killing one of my friends or something? Because I'm pretty sure-OW!” You wince as the Colonel taps your forehead with a bit more force.

“Think. In this situation, you're Floyd Beck. You're the son of one of humanity's great heroes, and sooner or later the Avalonians are going to make you an offer. Betray the Solar System, and get to be with Naomi Heim. They're using your love for her as bait in a trap. I'm not saying your feelings are wrong, but if you just get captured or subverted we all lose.” The Colonel looks sharply at you.

“Joseph, the Green Men continually underestimate humanity, even now. Perhaps they think what worked once will work twice. Or perhaps the rumors about the Green Men being able to somehow use their clones as more than just foot soldiers were true.” The older man corrects him, “Either way, the boy has a chance so long as he doesn't actually switch sides.”

I saw the avalonians change her in an instant with a voice command. They will keep the naomi I know as some kind of toy, only to be brought out as and when it suited them.

To save and protect the Naomi, I know, just surrendering and joining them wouldn't be enough. It would need actually taking her away from the avalonians and making sure they can never get to her again."

I believe the Kaiser is the Thoroughbred X, it was mentioned by the Colonel that Floyd was killed by Merrow by being crushed in the mechs hands, I remember the Kaiser that Roarke found didn't have a cockpit ball.

We honestly have no desire to switch sides. What they did to Naomi.. hell, to everyone was cruel. It's neither right or just. But at the same time I can't go back to soul. Either way, the jist of it seems like don't abandon myself, don't go it alone, and understand what they would tempt me with.
>>1340294
The kaiser's head was gone and it's torso cored. The cockpit a mess. Considering what the Swordfish does, it makes sense. Plenty of history there. The imitation sacrificing itself to stop the madness of the real deal... and then we'll have to do it all over again when we find out they made Floyd clones.
>>
>>1340294
But the thoroughbred was only given to very few pilots, and the pekoe team had five of them. Leroy was also the only confirmed KIA.

Rereading the first thread it is hard to say which one. It could be the X or it could be the MP.

>Dust is coating a bulky, humanoid figure that would be nearly twice as tall as your ten-meters-in-humanoid-form Harpy if it still had its head. Its joints have a chunky, heavily armored appearance, while its feet are narrow at the tips and wide at the heels. It looks like it has a large, square shield attached to a stubby sub-arm assembly on the elbow allowing it to rotate for better deflection angle, a bit too big for proper boxing, on the left arm. If the right arm had a weapon, it doesn't have it anymore, but to your relief the claws tipping its fingers have strong piston assemblies for a crushing grip. That might just be a stylistic choice on the part of the designer, but it suits you just fine. There's plenty of room in those beefy, armored forearms for further upgrades.

>As expected, the reactor is too large for your Harpy. That was almost never in question. The real problem, though, is the cockpit...or rather, the lack of one. There's a single clean hole bored side-on through its protruding torso armor, and your sensors report a complete lack of cockpit pressure. It's also missing its head. Unlike your Harpy, this one appears to be Jovian, meaning that it's as modular and versatile as a pile of legos but that it also keeps its cockpit in its stomach rather than in the head the way your Harpy is configured.

Considering the side hole rather than impalement I'm suspecting the Kaiser is the X after the Swordfish sniped it.

The remains on display might be Leroy's MP considering how the X killed him.
>>
>>1340324
Unless the Kaiser belonged to the MIA guy, it's the only thing that makes sense to me.
>>
>>1340347
It might have just been a post war mp that got fucked up by a pirate band in the belt.

>>
>>1340385

>>
>>1340371
Occam's Razor. The Greenmen needed Floyd Beck to announce him switching sides. They needed him to turn up in his iconic Thoroughbred X to prevent the brass from covering up that Beck was now a Greenman cultist.

Yes, that was the plan but it seems like Becker tried to get Merrow to switch sides before that.

You clench your fists, “Colonel, Master...thank you.”

They both stare at you. Shen's mustache curls in consternation, “For what? We're trying to talk you out of this. You should be disappointed in your elders, not smiling.”

You're smiling? You realize suddenly that, yes, you are, “Yeah. Because I'm still going to save her. I can see the trap, and I'm not going in blind. What SOUL, and General Fairchild, was planning for Naomi was cruel, I can't go back...but I also know if Avalon keeps her, they'll turn her into a weapon or a pet killer of some kind. Knowing that, there's no way I could ever really join them. You've thrown the past at me and narrowed my options down to the course I'd already decided on, why wouldn't I smile about that? I have to go. I have to take her away from them.”

The older man looks over your shoulder at the doorway of the shop, “Well, boy, are you convinced? Or are you going to hit him and drag him back to your big, overdesigned battleship?”

Someone puts their hand on your shoulder. You slowly crane your head to look at it. It's a big, rough paw of a hand, with extensive calluses and scarring on the knuckles. It's attached to an arm in a black leather sleeve, with a bag of groceries dangling around the wrist, “You're really sure about this, Caesar? You want to do it alone? Unfortunately, I wasn't able to comment sooner, I was fielding a call from my First Mate about a certain runaway.” He folds his arms and looks pointedly at you, then at Colonel Stern, “Interesting story, by the way.”

“It's not one anyone likes telling.” The Colonel replies.

“I suppose it comes down to a difference in philosophy, then. I can't wait like that when human lives are at risk.” Roarke Starwind shakes his head, “So, Caesar, what will it be?”

“Admiral...” You hesitate, it's a hard decision, “I have to do this myself. If I accept your help, that could jeopardize your position, and more importantly they won't be expecting it.”

He smiles and nods, “I thought so. I can't hold it against you, wanting to go someplace dangerous to rescue someone you love. I won't say it's wise, but then, I really have no grounds to talk there, do I?” He throws his head back, and starts laughing.

You join in, but then keel over as his fist hits you so hard in the pit of your stomach you fold over around it, toes lifting off the ground. You fall, and clap your hand over your mouth, barely managing not to puke. Admiral Starwind is still smiling, “That was for the engineer you struck. You're still an Iron Kestrel, Caesar, that means he was your brother.” He offers you his hand, and helps you back up as you gape like a landed fish trying to draw back in the breath you lost. “Never forget that. You okay?”

You nod, teary-eyed. He grins and pats your head, “Good man. Dust yourself off and go save your girl.”

“So, you'll tell the First Mate I'm free to go?” You ask, your voice sounding tinny and feeble.

“No. If you can't get away from Miles, you're not ready to handle the Avalonians. At least one of them is good enough to even be a challenge for me.” He shrugs, “Besides, there's a bigger reason I had you confined to quarters. Fairchild. I don't think for a second she's not planning some kind of sneaky bullshit to steal you back, and screw me over in the process. Miles gumming up her plans as much as possible is useful, if worst comes to it she'll be your backup in the process of bringing you in. Do your best.” He takes a seat at the table, “So, Master, is it my turn yet? You two take forever doing your moves.”

Well, there's some insults we can save for Fairchild.

"You'll never be a hero, Fairchild. No matter how much you twist the truth. I guess that's why you settled for being a monster."

“Any last minute advice?” You ask, leaning against one of the poles holding up the awning over the tables until you're sure you have your breath back.

Admiral Starwind nods, “Don't swing your fist unless you're sure you can hit.”

“I mean, about infiltrating a starship.” You elucidate.

He shrugs, “Sometimes a disguise doesn't work and you have to go in there openly, but these are Avalonians, a daring plan might impress them more. You're right, you can't really go over to these people. I've been sleeping with one, and I'm still no fan of their Lady. However, if they think you're valuable, they won't hurt you, and as long as you're alive and sane you can escape later...which, itself, is the real gamble you're taking. They might really have spores that Loriette doesn't know about.”

The Colonel facepalms, “You're sleeping with the Paladin.”

The Undefeated looks completely unsurprised.

The Admiral facepalms too, “I shouldn't have said that out loud, but nothing anyone else can say is scarier than what Fatima already did, so it doesn't matter. The point is, be alert, and if you need help don't hesitate to contact me by any means necessary. I'm not a politician, not a proper one anyway, I'm the leader of a pirate crew and you're part of it, screw the ramifications. You're under my protection, and that means something to me.” Simple words, but as serious as the Black Ogre's fists.

"Maybe I need an Avalonian uniform, do you have any?" You ask.

He shakes his head, "No, and I'm not sure Loriette's ship would have any that are useful to you. Avalonians love their heraldry, and from what I can tell soldiers serving different nobles can be distinguished at a glance. You'd need one from one of the Duke's people to pass as part of their crew. Fortunately, it's a big ship, he can't possibly know everyone."

You smile and nod jerkily, “Tell Dave from Engineering I'm sorry, and that he's really tough.”

“I'll let him know personally. Good luck, Caesar.” Admiral Starwind smiles, and you set off.

So, we need to be somewhat valuable to them...or daring enough to impress them.

And we can't disguise ourselves until we get on that ship. And even then, we might have to do some Hitman-style uniform switching before we get the right ones.

The daring / valuable part is how we get in. The uniforms are one way to get around.

Ex: In a way your devotion at least reminds me of the stories of ji Xifeng. She must have been quite the inspiration to you. I think I heard she even had a sidekick with Pink hair as well, did you dream of one day fighting for humanity beside her?

How lucky you are to have this time of relative peace to avoid walking that terrible path behind her though.

I'm sure your Mother, I saw a painting of her once, must be very proud that while Ji and others fought on the battlefield you were able to rise within the ranks based on your political skills alone.

Stuff like that. Even better if we sound as sincere as possible.

Then casually congratulate her, you heard she might be a grand Auntie.

Ok, rereading the old threads, I think Wong made a booboo in regards to the Undefeated's wife. He mentioned that his wife and daughter died in the war and therefore retired from the UJCIDF. Here, he mentioned that his wife is actually Valerie Fairchild who managed to have another child after divorcing him.

>>
>>1342218
Aye. Sometimes it is better to not make a big deal of such things, though. Besides, that back story info was a pretty good anniversary gift. We know more about the heroes of the war, ways to needle Fairchild, and the Kaiser's origin.

>>1342273
Probably the best gift we can get. Plus we got some info on how to get in an Avalonian ship and move around.
>>
>>1342488
I think in terms of insults, I think the biggest will be this; for all she does and all she tries, the fact remains that she herself was a vessel for her Mother. A doll designed to be better than the daughter who abandoned her for her actions who became a true hero of the war. A doll, that would never be able to step out of their shadows. So, out of greed, she does everything she can to make her mother proud and hoping to fill a void that would never close, no matter how many lives she destroys to do so. She will never be a hero like her half sister. She will never be as powerful as her mother. She will never grow as a person as her subordinates. For fairchild, she will ever remain a child trying to fill clothing that will never suit her.
>>
This info also explains Jesus. He was brought in to be Floyd Beck mk.2

When you get down to it, making a Hard Shell is really just applying a template to a preexisting mech. The example Hard Shells suck because the mechs they were made out of suck.

Although, the Mandible would be a significant threat if it could fly. 0 MV and +3 to attacks with its sword. Even a novice would be dangerous in that thing.

I didnt mind that they all got wrecked, just that they got wrecked by the same bitch move repeatedly. Oh looks like there might be some tension here, how about we completely wreck it with another dainsleif firing squad
>>
>>1345696
Story wise, I can understand that. A weapon that breaks everything removes tension. But at the same time, it's the sort of thing that makes logical sense when dealing with nigh super human foes. Honestly, what bothers me more is the fact that the villains had thicker plot armor than the heroes when they should be caught. Iok especially for constantly fucking over everything for everyone ever for the dumbest reasons.
>>
>>1345891
Its one thing to use the super illegal super weapon in space with no repercussions but shooting it at a planet from orbit is a bit much. Someone must have spotted that shit.
Also the mobile armour managed to be a busted as shit super weapon but still be handled interestingly. What was even the point of the gundams if they could just go fuck everything with the dainsleif?
>>
>>1345928
Because logistically, they would be horrible against mobile armors. Those bits would get in the way, and the solid metal is just more food. Those sort of firing lines mean nothing when the enemy just sends a wave of expendables, but said expendables are useless against an ace. So you send the Gundams out to deal with the big guy, the dainslef as support fire to keep enough heat off so they can do their job. The fact they are slow to reload makes it tougher to use them in a rushed conflict as well.
>>
>>1345958
Just bombard him from space like they did the two guys. No way a pluma can tank one of those shots anyway.

You hit the streets, coming up with the best way to frame insults for General Fairchild next time you see her again, “Too bad, so sad, you're only a shadow of your half-sister~” You say to yourself in a whisper. A couple, passing by on the other side of the street, gives you a strange look.

There's more traffic here. You can already see crowds up ahead at the trendy shops that service tourists, the bars, and the bazaars of questionably legitimate goods. Plus, the beach. There's always the beach.

You pause for a moment, trying to think of a plan. You know where the Avalonian ship is docked, and surely there are guards there...or you could wander around and hope you run into one so you can knock him out with your stun baton and take his stuff. You only live once.

At that precise moment, your PC buzzes, and you turn your head and look down to fumble it out of your pocket. Just as you do, something slides through your hair like a comb. You jump, and stare when you see, sticking out of the wall of a building, a tranq needle still quivering from the force of impact.

You spot something gleaming on top of a marketplace building, and break into a run. The first step of any plan is getting the fuck away from a sniper.

You can't get away fast enough on foot. Also, that building is the tallest one around, modeled after a much taller version of an Ancient Roman temple, so you know they'll have a lot of space they can see. So, you do the obvious thing.

“Psshh, yeah, like, my dad totally owns a vacation home on Europa, babe. I'm just sayin'. He's a SENATOR, we don't have to follow the rules little people do. We can get your record expunged if you licky licky my sticky wicky real quicky and...” Oh look, some guy wearing a tryhard attempt at faux-pirate fashion with an overtooled bike is leaning uncomfortably close over a working girl trying unsuccessfully to push her foodcart past his bike.

So you grab his arm and judo-flip him into the gutter just like Clemmy taught you, swing your leg over the bike, and give her a dazzling smile, “H-hi, don't tell the cops what I look like.” You fail miserably to look confident, but she still blushes.

You rev the bike and speed off.

The jetbike is a big, metallic-blue number. A bit more of a dick compensator than your familiar sleek white model with the aeroscoops and sculpted chassis, but despite being a lot flashier this isn't actually as expensive a model.

At least, at its base. As you grip the overdone REAL LEATHER handlebars and set off down the road, you hear a godawful WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO from the jets. That subhuman has installed a whistle tip. A fucking whistle tip. You're overwhelmed with disgust for a brief, fatal instant. In that instant, a tranq needle hits the whistle tip and it vanishes into the thruster jet. The bike jerks, as if hiccuping. Another needle zips past your face.

For most people, the only question would be whether they survived the crash. Most people haven't played as many racing games as you have. Most people haven't also played shitty racing sections with bad controls in non-racing games as obsessively as you have. For you, a problem controlling your bike is nothing worth worrying about.

You barely notice as your ride fishtails wildly, hitting a bump in the road...and on pure impulse, you rear it up, spinning in a perfect 360-hot-dog flip and kicking it into next gear. The whistle tip drops free, bouncing off the ground, and you land perfectly, speeding away down the road and slipping the bike between hurrying crowds of people.

There are ways you could flat-out escape, lose yourself, even sicc Red Siren's enforcers on your assailant, since you know where they are...but instead, you ride.

Riding is simple. Riding is pure. If it weren't for jetbikes and mecha, you're not sure why you'd ever go outside your room. You let the wind caress your hair, and once you clear the crowds you stay alert but no more tranq darts come your way. You heave a sigh of relief, and turn on the radio. For now, at least, it's okay to just cruise. The jetbike may have been modded and customized to a disgusting degree, but it has a good engine underneath it. Best of all, the DJ is hyping up the tournament by playing appropriate music for a hotblooded mechjockey like yourself, so you shut up and jam. Soon, you're clear of the shops, the beach and lake glittering nearby.

“Ah, look, a real seagull! It's not animatronic or anything!” A girl points, and a boy jerks her back out of the road even though you were probably well clear of her.

“C-Cathy, that's dangerous!” Wait a second, you know that voice. Only, it's attached to a straight-backed young man with short, dark hair and a pointed chin, wearing a UJCIDF Lieutenant uniform. For a moment, your eyes meet, “C...CAAAAESAR!” It's not a question.

You start to speed past, but there's no escaping his plaintive expression. You spin the jetbike in a neat semicircle to face Simon Biggs, one of your oldest friends, and come to a halt.

A cool wind ripples off the lake, ruffling your hair.

“Up next, Starship Trooper by Yes! It's, uh, a request from someone named Dude McCool.” The DJ announces.

A guitar string ripples.

“Caesar, that's really you, isn't it?” Simon asks. He looks like he's on the verge of being his usual emotional self.

You nod, not quite trusting yourself to speak. Even Simon is a Lieutenant now? What the hell happened on Qu'lir, and what the hell have you been doing? Although to be fair, you were in SOUL A and the Qu'liri operation was overseen by General Fairchild for the SOUL portions if you believe JNN, so it makes sense to you that some political bullshit happened.

“Why...why are you dressed like a pirate? You're not one of the Iron Kestrels, are you...are you on a mission, infiltrating them?”

If all else, the way things were done were not to our liking. To use people as weapons no matter their background is something we can not abide. Of course we still believe in doing the right thing, but for what we want to do, being with SOUL would not allow it.
>>
Secondary question, since you decided to tell him the truth...does that include the truth about Naomi? What she is, how she joined the military, and what happened to her?
>>
>>1347188
>>1347188
No talking about the greenmen. In the end, the matter was simple, we were used by the organization we trusted, shot at when we tried to protect what we loved, and are trying to rescue them from those who seek to use her as a weapon. The only one who didn't treat human lives like that were the pirates oddly enough.
Still, Simon has grown. I do not expect him to back down.
>>
>>1347222
Nah that can be saved for later, maybe when we aren't at war with the Greenmen or on the street where everyone can hear us.

You know... In the end the greenman thing IS a vital thing to the story, without it something will be cleary missing from it: Its Cause.
So... Yeah, I don't think there is really a way to avoid it, but we shouldn't tell it to his face from the start, lets work him a bit into the story and them reveal the final truth later.
Also, lets not do that in the middle of the street.
>>
>>1347222
No. We don't really need to go into specifics about Naomi. Fairchild being Fairchild and Roarke being Roarke was reason enough for the rest of Soul A (and Clemmy).

You look at what's in the hands of Simon and his girlfriend. Ice cream.

Your heart lurches, remembering Naomi accidentally getting ice cream on her nose when you were on a date with her. You remember her not getting your subtle attempts to hint at its presence and how it stood out against her dark skin. Your eyes and heart suddenly feel hot, and too big for the spaces containing them.

“I need to sit down for a moment.” You park the bike outside the ice cream shoppe along the road, and order a milkshake before sitting down with them.

You get the pleasantries out of the way as you eat your treats. You try, early on, to apologize for interrupting his date, but the girl, one Catherine Nedermeyer, won't hear of it and insists it's nice to meet you, apparently she knows Garret and Amos pretty well too. Or, as she calls him, Famous Amos.

“...It's not an act. I really did join the Iron Kestrels, no matter what the official cover-up story is.” You explain.

Cathy gasps, covering her mouth with her hands, Simon stares at you as if you'd grown a second head, “W-w-why!? We...we...you and I entered the Academy together...” His hands tighten into fists, “You worked so hard to help me pass even when you were pushed to your limit too. You even told me you were here because your father didn't want you to be. You pushed and pushed and didn't just get into SOUL, you helped the rest of us get in too. You had a dream, Caesar.” He glares at you across the table, “What happened to that dream? What happened to being our friend, to believing in the UJCIDF?”

How can we protect humanity when the person who holds our leash doesn't give a shit about it? How can we protect our loved ones when she uses them as tools for her own purpose? “I discovered something unpleasant about that dream. It was a lot like a modern simgame, all flash and no substance. It relied on everyone being as noble as we wanted to be.” You sip your rapidly melting shake.

Simon crushes the paper his ice cream cone came in, “I don't understand.”

“Fairchild and SOUL B. They got in the way of my dream. Our dream. We joined the military to make the galaxy a better place, remember? To save people? Not to use them as pawns sacrificed for political purposes.” You slam your fist down on the table, “My squad was supposed to be sacrificed to start a conflict with the Iron Kestrels! Our ship was sabotaged by someone who knew our systems inside and out, a registered member of the crew left over from when it was Fairchild's ship! She sacrificed an entire colony using it as a shield to fight that battleship!” You point semi-randomly at the 'sky', you think you have a good idea of where it's berthed outside the colony, "Every step of the way, SOUL has been used and betrayed to advance the General's fucking career!"

Simon looks over at Cathy, “Hey, could you go down to the beach, and get Garret and Amos?”

She makes a face, “Ugh, I'll try to be back quickly.” She puts a hand on his shoulder, “...Are you sure? I mean, really sure? This doesn't sound good, maybe I should tell the Colonel.”

Simon makes a face, “Cathy, please let me talk to him by myself.”

She looks uncertain, but she goes.

“Simon, listen, they shot at me for trying to protect Naomi. At a fellow SOUL pilot.” Your voice is anguished, “You're working for someone who is absolutely, pure evil.”

He blinks, “Naomi? Um...do I know her?” He looks uncertain.

You sigh, “I'll sum it up. I fell in love with my squadmate, it turns out she's a superweapon for the UJCIDF. General Fairchild put her niece second in command of a mission that went pear-shaped when the Iron Kestrels showed up and the Avalonians ended up capturing her.”

He frowns, “So why is Admiral Starwind a better choice to rescue her than we are? Caesar, we're your FRIENDS, you're not thinking straight.”

You want to claw your own hair out, “Because both sides want to brainwash her into being one of their ace weapons, the only people who DIDN'T want that were the Kestrels, and they took us in after I, uh, broke Keith's mech. He shot first!”

“Y-yeah, I bet he did.” Simon mutters.

“You've met him, haven't you?” You remark, knowingly.

“Y-yeah, you bet I have.” Simon grumbles, wincing, “What kind of superweapon?” Something about the way he says it gives you pause.

“I...” You start, and he cuts you off.

“Nanobots? Illegal clones? Genemods? I-Is her mech a Paladin designed with our technology?” That last one, he says just a little bit too calmly.

You look around. This seems like a weird place for there to be random surveillance and nobody else is within apparent earshot.

I'm not stopping you, but I'll remind you that Simon knows Caesar extremely well. "Don't" is flat-out not answering his question.
>>
>>1347410
I would like to add a very important question onto this; on the off chance we must make the decision, are we willing to end Naomi to save her from a fate worse than death? We could fail. We can't trust either side who would use her. If it comes to brass tacks that she is not savable or doing so risks everyone we trust, are we willing to kill her?
>>
>>1347437
All I'll say is that Caesar is very much Merrow's son from what I've read.

>"Its... Complicated, but she is a biomoded clone from the time of the war, with over the top HMIS compatibility and jove-knows-what-else... And Avalon has some kind of hypnosis technology to control her, so I need to save her before is too late."
>>
>>1347440
Merrow was against ressurecting the girl, but he didn't killed her himself.

I don't think that Ceasar would give up that easily, I think that even he fails now he would still look for a way to bring her back or something... But if it was inevitable, he would end up killing her to stop her being the monster she fighted agaisnt.

What do you think?

>>1347437
I'll give you another question.
If the memories are a vital part of who we are, and by having both Naomi's memories and the Lady's memories she is not truly either of them... Would Ceasar love whoever cames out of it if she still loves in back? What if she decides to run with him, what if she don't but just tells him to get away to not be hurt by being on the eye of the storm?
>>
>>1347410
>[Tell him, but secretly]

He knows
>>
>>1347467
Considering the plan seems to be wiping naomi to replace her psyche with the Green Ladies, I don't think the question really works. Likewise, the complete change of personality caused by the greenman bits. She may love us, but if she tries to destroy humanity, we still need to stab her.
>>
>>1347410
>[Don't]
Still too open location.
>>
>>1347496
Nobody knows if it'll work completely because(if I'm not mistaken) they never tested it before on equal circunstances(I remember the Duke saying something about that... But I would need to check it before knowing for sure).

There is also the fact that we are probably getting her in the middle of the process... So she may ends up with only partial memory of the Lady's experiences, or even if she gets it fully, there is no way to tell if she will become fully a literal walking clone of the lady or if her earlier experiences will tweak it in a way that will end up making her a mix or both....

I could try to give you a few examples based on how the development of the mind and the brain complete each other through its formation during the early stages of life and how some things get mostly defined there... But greenman bullshit may turn it useless anyway.

Also... The Lady isn't really transfering her counsciousness in this case, just coping her memories to create a second her... So this isn't the usual even for them.
>>
>>1347532
Except that has been done several times over the war. Even the Father said he just needed a clone. The AVALONIANS have never done it before and the Lady never explained it to them. This is not a case of copy and pasting the files, this is activating a function put into her, cleaning her entire psyche, then putting the green lady in. Standard Psychology and mental imprinting falls apart considering what they've done. Hell, look at what father did to Palmera; a complete brain wipe until she was just a remote controlled weapon.
>>
“It's complicated.” You beckon him over, and whisper in his ear, “She's a biomodded clone found on Mars after the War. Apparently she was asleep in a vat. When the UJCIDF found out about her existence, they recruited her and fast tracked her into SOUL.”

“S-so what are you going to do?” Simon asks, oddly neutrally.

“I'm going to go get her ba-” You don't get to finish the word.

Suddenly, you're on the ground, and your ears are ringing. Your cheek stings. Simon rubs his palm against his uniform as if wiping off something greasy, “A Green Men clone.” He says tonelessly. You didn't even see him move to hit you. He's gotten faster. Damn it, this is the second time someone's hit you out of nowhere. Next time it happens, you're sticking that stun baton where the light of Sol doesn't reach and frying whoever's responsible.

“Simon, what in Tartarus are you doing!?” You haul yourself up to your feet. Your head is still spinning, and you can taste blood in your mouth. You must have bitten your tongue.

“On Qu'lir, I saw what the Green Men do to people, Caesar. I saw what their s-servants do to people. I saw one Paladin kill Martian pilots as if she was swatting flies. Casually. Lazily. Just breaking them apart while she waited for us. I s-saw another u-use his battleship's main gun on his own army for a tactical advantage. I don't...I can't even talk about what an actual Green Man does. I have nightmares about it, Caesar. Sometimes I wake up, thinking I'm still back down there in the dark, hearing the skittering of those...those poor people that thing possessed. You're in love with one of them, so you betrayed us to become a pirate and save her? That's a little hard to accept, C-Caesar!” His hands clench into fists.

“That's why I need to get her back! Even before she's my girlfriend, she's one of us, Simon!” You roar at him, refusing to back down, “She's a UJCIDF pilot, I won't abandon her to the enemy OR Fairchild! It's not her fault she is what she is. I'm going to go to that damned ship and get her back even if I have to crack it in half with the Swordfish!”

“We're soldiers, Caesar! We're expected to die if we have to! I-I even agreed to pilot a mech that could have easily killed me for the sake of Jupiter, I'm sure she'd do the same! On Qu'lir, we ALL put our lives at risk! Many of our soldiers died, and we could easily have died too, but we faced it and we saved an entire planet! Th-that's your problem, Caesar, your ego is making you think nobody else's problems are bigger than yours!” He roars back.

“If they can do with her what I suspect they can do with her, then it's fine for me to risk my life! It's worthwhile to stop her from being used as a weapon!” You're not sure when you tensed up into a fighting stance, instinctually preparing for combat.

Simon sighs, and takes off his uniform shirt, dropping it onto the table. His muscular structure, as always, weirds you out a little. Despite his small body, it's like tightly packed cords, capable of incredible speed and explosive power, “I'm sorry, C-Caesar. I can't let you do this. I'll stop you, and if I can't, I'll hold out until Amos and Garret get here. You don't need to do this, what you need is h-help. You're t-too close to this.”

“I'm sorry it had to come to this.” You draw your baton and whip it out to its full length, lightning crackling along its haft.

He smiles sadly, “I guess i-in the end it had to be this way.”

Your PC buzzes again.

Simon, for all of his insecurities and inadequacies, has always been a ridiculous prodigy in one area. Unarmed martial arts. Much like Roarke Starwind...going off your combat analyses and talk on the holonet...he has an instinctive ability for brawling. His body always moves exactly how he directs it to...and you see it beautifully displayed during the brief spate of violence that follows. He leaps into the air and over his seat, kicking off the beach umbrella of the table you were sitting at. His muscular control is so perfect it barely bends, and yet as he, horizontal in midair, kicks at your head you can feel the wind of his strike and know that even a light brush could render you unconscious.

So, despite him being unarmed, you stumble back and let it whiff by you by mere inches. He lands and simultaneously launches a furious chop towards your neck...but you've been training with Clemmy, and you know how to do more than retreat. You slip the attack and move in. He dodges your first jab of the baton, but it was just a feint to get his arms up, and for the second you drop low and stab upward, poking him in the breastbone.

There's a hissing sound of electricity, and his body jerks as it practically flies away from you, crashing down atop the table. At least it's not the ground. You look at him mournfully as you return to your jetbike and fire it up, “Sorry for ruining your date, Simon, but I'm my own master now.”

You see Amos, Garret, and Cathy running back towards the road over the dunes, but you gun the jetbike and speed away. Your PC takes this moment to buzz at you again, you have an incoming call.

You almost just let it go. There's a lot on your mind, singular purpose or not. You didn't want your reunion with your friends to be like this. You didn't want to fight Simon. You're definitely keeping this stun baton, though.

At any rate, curiosity compels you to check your PC. It's an unknown number, still trying to connect. With a sigh, you answer it, “Hello? Who's calling, please?” Your dad drilled the habit of asking who it is first into your head at a young age.

“You need a uniform from one of Duke Eustace de Rothschild-Beauchamps' men, correct?” It's a female voice, it sounds like, with enough deliberate electronic interference to make identifying it impossible.

“Who's asking?” You respond phlegmatically, without giving anything away.

“You'd have gone far in Intelligence, Caesar Merrow. Do you know where the maid cafe in the peony square section of town is? Behind the cafe there will be a brown paper package, tucked behind the dumpster. A uniform is waiting for you inside, along with ID. I'll be in contact to brief you on their procedures, I've had the chance to study Countess Kennedy's people extensively and there shouldn't be too many differences. On a battleship that size it's impossible to know everyone's face.” The woman responds.

“Why are you doing this?” You ask without revealing a decision on trusting them either way.

“Because I know how impulsive love can make you. Because I can sympathize with throwing everything away for it. I'm sorry for hiding my voice, I just don't want there to be any proof of teamwork between us later, just in case it's relevant.” The woman apologizes.

Lok was the best part

IT WAS YOOOOU
>>
>>1354712
Right, this is likely to have holes, but I'll try to explain from my own perspective.
She probably married someone else or stayed as the youngest widow. Don't think many would go for McGenius' seconds especially after all that.
GaliGali spend an entire fight being throttled around by Ein. If I recall it puts a strain on him. The area he dealt with the Worst char had no gravity, so he could have been in bad shape.
A thing to consider is that no side of this conflict was really good. McGillis killed a bunch of people and did a naked power grab, the space mafia were divided and conflicted, and Orga was not someone who could lead a truely large group. It was a case of 3 sides who have no right to, fighting for an important title and one won it. The plus side is such a thing weakened them to the point where they probably had no choice. Over half their leaders were dead alongside large numbers of their forces.
Not the worst karma houdini in all this, but it did seem like the battle with Mika jostled her brain somewhat. That and if all else fails we have GaliGali lance her.
Pallete swap mika is fine too.
Probably why they gave up mars. 'Sorry we glassed a chunk of the planet, you can have the rest.'
Well, the ones shown. Think there are still some laying about in one of the side stories.

>>1354804
He died the best way. Crushed to death by a pair of giant hedge clippers. Was satisfying.
>>
>>1354712
>>1354843
Honestly, Ghorn leadership was in tatters and Rustal saw an opportunity to leverage the situation to his advantage. He made out pretty well, all things considered. The Martians got something they wanted, potentially undercutting any unrest and/or neo Tekkedan uprising, and Neo-Ghorn can focus its forces on holding a planet that actually matters. Also, Loks dead, meaning that 30,000 + people can now live healthy, productive lives and not get killed by his stupidity.
its a "happy" end where things got "better," the Tekkedan survivors have to spend the rest of their lives looking over their shoulders, but lil Mika doesn't have to kill people for money like dear old dad.
>>
>>1354712
Ok, Kouhai. Lemme give you the condensed version of IBO's ending.

>Almira went AWOL, due to conflicting feelings about her fiancee killing/not-killing her brother, then her brother killing her fiance
>RUSTAL "CHILD SPEARIN'' ELLION made the reforms, otherwise Gjallarshits lose whatsoever political influence they have after McChocoChar's revolution
>After the first Battle between RUSTAL "PLOT BIGGER THAN JUSTICE BONER" ELION and McChocoChar, he had carte blanche to use Dainsleifs against Tekkadan
>Gundams ain't destroyed. More like hidden away again like Bael was or secretly refurbished to spark an uprising against the new World Order

>>1355045
If they ever do make a sequel, probably going through the Zeta route for Mika Jr.
>>
>>1355364
He didnt have carte blanche to use Dainsleifs though, they were still illegal as fuck.
>>
>>1355506
It's a case of using something illegal to decisively end it. Mika was a true threat and was fully capable of killing everything in his path. If left alive he'd likely rally more people to him and make things worse for all those involved because Mika cannot into politics or being subtle. The fact they did their final battle in a open area with no real life nearby limited the damage, and considering they were the last remnants of Worst Char's rebellion, they had to be struck down hard.

If Berserk has a shitty ending I full expect people to kill themselves.

Guts smashes Griffith with the boat and goes on to become an idol.

IIRC, Wong did say Berserk did finally finished with a 3 hr epic movie that revitalized the anime industry and was categorized as a National Treasure. It was displayed alongside other Japanese cultural artifacts and part of the haul of the Storm Dragon's pirate debut.

Thank god for that universe, but who knows how well its ending in ours. For all we know Casca might wake up in a couple of chapters and have no memory of Guts and still being in love with Griffith.
