Welcome to Spirit Detective Quest! This quest, as the title suggests, takes place in the world of Yu Yu Hakusho, though it does not take place during the events of the show. You're a young highschooler, one who will find himself granted the title of Spirit Detective, and will be charged with tracking down demons and other supernatural criminals.

>Rules

Each time I make an update, there will be a ten minute window in which you can vote between various options I have provided. Write-ins are accepted and encouraged, but I do reserve the right to veto them. Once ten minutes have passed, the option (or suitable combination) with the most support will win.

You can choose multiple options, but be mindful of when that doesn't take any sense. Saying you want to go talk to someone and then talk to someone else in one post doesn't make much sense.

Also, in combat, I may veto selecting multiple options depending on how feasible that seems.

As far as combat, you will roll to attempt different options. I will not tell you what the number needed is ahead of time, so use your heads and balance risk/reward. Sometimes, you should take riskier options if they can yield greater payoff. Other times, it's best to play it safe. Use your judgement.

This is not Dragonball, and while there are sometimes ways to bring back the dead, they are few and far between, so do not assume that anybody you kill/let die will be coming back.

I hope you all have fun.

These savage attacks are taking energy to continue. Your opponent, in a rage, has begun to show signs of wearing herself out. If you can only continue to evade her attacks for long enough, you can easily manage a victory once she's exhausted herself. There doesn't seem to be much choice otherwise. Once she attacks, you can't do much to counter beyond the Spirit Gun, and you've already fired off one of those.

"Will, do you want me to take her?" Stephanie asks.

Ignoring her for the moment, you wait for Silisha to strike again.

She comes quickly, swinging her whip and striking the ground as you jump back and begin to fall into a retreat.

"HOLD STILL!" she shrieks, rushing over and swinging her whip again.

She's wearing herself out. But you aren't sure you can hold her off until a good opportunity presents itself. Maybe you can get her to slip up, make a careless mistake. That should at least increase your chances a little bit, right?

"Pfft, you think you-" you begin to mouth off, only to eat your words as the whip wraps around your right arm, and you're pulled toward the demoness.

You stumble forward as she kicks with her right leg, catching you in the face and causing your head to jerk back as your body is lifted into the air. Before your head even stops swimming, Silisha gives another tug of the whip, slamming your body to the ground at her feet.

"Will!" you hear Aria shout in a panic.

"Now, what were you saying, boy?" the demoness demands as she drags you closer, the whip unwrapping from your arm as she stomps on the back of your head, a blow that would have been fatal were you a normal human being. As it is, you can't seem to find the strength to move, and the pain you're feeling is unbearable.

"Get away from him!" you hear Damon shout as Silisha's foot lifts off your head.

You hear a strange sound, like a crackle of electricity, and a grunt from Damon.

"Stay back," you hear Silisha command. "I'll take care of you next."

"Will, I'm taking this one!" you hear Stephanie shout.

"Alright," you groan, beginning to push yourself back up.

"I don't think so," Silisha comments, and as you rise to your feet, you see the demoness turning toward you, readying her whip to give you another round of attacks.

"Don't even think about it, bitch," you hear Stephanie loudly address the demon.

Both you and Silisha look in the direction of her voice, finding the girl aiming a Spirit Gun at the female demon, a serious expression on her face as she prepares to fire at a moment's notice.

"You really think I can't dodge that from here?" Silisha questions.

"Not if you take the time to kill Will," Stephanie tells her. "Now, take a step back and let him go."

"I have a better idea," Silisha tells her, raising the whip.

"Just fine," you answer. "Thanks for the help."

Stephanie shrugs, leaving the fallen demon on the ground as she makes her way across the cavern toward you. "You would have done the same for me. That's why we're working as a team."

"So, just two more left?" Damon inquires as he and Aria move to join you.

"Yes, though the last two will be even more dangerous than Silisha was," Aria cautions. "Maybe it'd be a good idea to call fer backup, or fall back until ye all get yer energy back."

"No way," Stephanie tells her. "I can keep going no problem, and if we leave now, those last two demons will just run off and cause more trouble later."

Damon gives an agreeing nod. "We can handle this."

"Yeah, let's keep going," you tell the others.

Aria sighs, but nevertheless goes along with what the group as a whole has decided. And so, the four of you continue down further into the tunnels. Leaving the cavern, you once again find yourselves walking a narrow path deeper and deeper below the Earth, with Stephanie taking the lead, and Damon bringing up the rear.

When the four of you reach another cavern, you ready yourselves for the next demon to show themself.

"So, how's about I take this one, too?" Stephanie asks.

"No way," Damon tells her. "It's my turn now."

The girl raises an eyebrow at him, skeptical. "Have you ever beaten any demons this powerful?"

"He can handle it," you assure Stephanie before looking to your friend. "If things get too hot to handle, just let us know so that we can jump in."

Damon nods, an attempted look of confidence on his face that does little to hide how nervous he is about this upcoming confrontation. Why he's decided to take this battle alone if it frightens him so much, you can't really say. Maybe he has something to prove to himself, or maybe he's showing off for the girls. It's tough to tell with him.

"Alright then," Stephanie says, her tone letting you know that she expects this to go about as well for him as the last one did for you.

A new sound fills the cavern. It's a sort of clattering, almost like footsteps, only too fast to be made by a person, it seems. It sounds almost like a creature skittering across the floor, and you're pretty sure that means Damon's stuck fighting the weird monster chick.

The noise becomes much louder very quickly, and everyone braces themselves, watching the far entrance to the cavern in expectation of the monster making its appearance.

Yet, as the seconds pass, and the noise becomes louder, you still can't see anything. You stare into the darkness, straining your eyes for any sign of the beast's approach, but your focus is ripped away when Damon lets out a gasp.

Looking his way, you see him drop to one knee, holding the trashcan lid handle above his head, and focusing his energy into a shield. An instant later, some sort of purple substance splatters against the shield, some splashing off to the sides, and the rest seeming to steam on top of it.

Damon rises to his feet, then immediately leaps back as his attacker drops down from the ceiling, landing on all fours in front of him.

It's vaguely humanoid, but with blue, reptilian skin, no ears, black eyes, and a tail that stretches out behind her. She's dressed in shorts and a t-shirt, and you don't really want to know what she's hiding under there.

"Yes, not bad," she hisses, rising to stand on two legs. "You will make fun prey."

Staying silent and still, you stay back to see how your friend will handle this opponent.

Damon, keeping his shield raised, begins to advance on his foe. She doesn't seem particularly willing to sit around and play games, however, as she rushes forward, on the attack.

Damon stops in his tracks, raising his shield to fend off her offensive, but the demon instead leaps into the air, moving over Damon's head and sending her tail swinging toward the back of it. Your friend turns around just in time to take the tail to the face, and falls onto his back, laying sprawled and prone before his opponent.

The demon chuckles darkly. "Yes...."

With that, she rushes toward Damon, raising a clawed hand and striking toward your friend's throat. Damon brings his shield up just in time to block, pulling it away and seizing the demon's wrist with his free hand. He then slams the shield down on the creature's arm, drawing a pained shriek from it. Damon continues to slam his shield down on the creature's arm, drawing more and more pained cries, before the demon takes a deep breath, and spits that purple substance, catching your friend in the face.

In a shock, Damon releases the demon, who quickly hops back, rubbing her wounded arm.

"What the hell did you just do to me?" your friend demands, wiping some of the substance off of his face and rising to his feet.

The creature chuckles. "I've poisoned you, of course."

Aria looks on in horror, and Stephanie takes a step forward, readying herself to jump in.

"Don't worry, it isn't fatal," the creature tells your friend. "You see, it will gradually slow you down, making your movements sluggish. And then, it will render you unconscious. When that happens, I will eat you alive!"

Damon glares at the creature. "Not if I kill you first."

"You need to have a little faith in other people," you tell her.

"Blind faith is just stupid," she replies, looking forward and watching Damon prepare for another round.

The creature cackles as Damon steps forward, breaking into a run and readying herself to attack your friend once again. Just like last time, Damon raises his shield in preparation for an attack, and the creature leaps over his head, swinging her tail down toward it.

This time, however, Damon ducks, barely avoiding the strike. With his free hand, he reaches up and grabs hold of the tail, rising back to his full height and turning toward his opponent, who looks back at him with shock.

"Let go!" she shrieks.

Instead, Damon pulls as hard as he can, dragging the demon back toward him. Hissing, she rushes toward him, making a claw strike that he blocks with his shield. He then raises his knee, striking her in the gut. While she's distracted, he pulls back his shield, and slams it into her face, causing her to stagger back. He makes another strike, then prepares a third before suddenly groaning and releasing his hold on the demon's tail, his now free hand moving to grab his head as he staggers and falls to one knee.

The badly-bruised demon scurries away before turning to face your friend, her disgusting face smiling toward him.

"It won't be long now...."

Growling, Damon gets back to his feet. "Damn you...."

The demon cackles once again, but as Damon rushes forward, she stops, beginning to scramble away with a look of fear on her face. However, Damon only makes it a few steps before falling back to his knee, and her cackling resumes.

"You can't even reach me, human!" she declares. "Just give in!"

"I-I swear that I'm going to get you," Damon declares, lifting his shield. "I'll bash your face in, I'll...."

His free hand moves to clutch the arm holding the shield, his body trembling as he lets out a groan.

"Screw this," Stephanie tells you. "I'm jumping in."

She's determined to get in there and help. And honestly, looking at the current situation, you really can't blame her anymore. Damon hasn't taken any significant damage from attacks yet, but he can barely even stand anymore. It probably won't be more than a minute before he's out cold, and that damn thing's moving in to eat him alive.

At this point, you aren't about to stop her from saving Damon's skin. As she rushes forward, you don't lift so much as a finger in protest.

Damon, on the other hand, isn't about to let her just jump in.

"S-stay back!" he orders with all the strength he can place in his voice right now. "I told you, I'm going to kill her."

Stephanie comes to a halt, looking at him incredulously. "Come on, you can barely stand, just let me help you!"

The demon cackles again. "Yes, listen to your friend! Or maybe you want to die, is that it?"

"N-not before you do," Damon groans, forcing himself back to his feet and holding the shield out toward her. "I told you, I'm gonna....gonna...."

He begins to stumble forward, and his eyes start to close, but at the last moment, the shield seems to shoot right off of the handle, flying across the cavern toward a surprised demon, striking her dead-center in the chest and rapidly pushing her back to the cavern wall.

The creature's body slams against the cavern, and that's when the shield just explodes, shaking the cavern and obscuring your vision of the demon, who lets out a hideous scream.

Damon falls forward, collapsing unconscious on the ground.

Stephanie turns toward the demon, and as the creature steps into view, you can see that it's been badly scorched. Staggering forward, it lets out pathetic little gasps before falling onto all fours.

"Have to run," you hear it muttering to itself. "Have to get away!"

"I don't think so," Stephanie tells the creature, making a gun out of her right hand and pointing at it.

>A. Ask Stephanie if she's sure she has enough energy left

>B. You don't think that's necessary

>C. See if you can gather the energy for a Spirit Gun

>D. Something else

"I don't think that's necessary," you tell Stephanie.

The girl glances back at you, a look of irritation on her face. "Will, I don't need you second-guessing every decision I make. I've been at this longer than you, so trust that I have some idea of what I'm doing."

Before you can answer, you spot the creature scurrying up the cavern wall, reaching the ceiling and attempting to make her escape.

>A. Point that out to Stephanie

>B. See if you have the energy for a Spirit Gun

>C. Don't say anything

>D. Something else

You point at the ceiling, and Stephanie points at the demon.

"SPIRIT GUN!"

There's a flash of light, and the creature falls dead to the ground. You guess that she knows what she's doing.

At least, you hope so.

>End Updates

I hope you guys had fun

Follow me @qmdralo to see when I'm running

Thanks senpai
>>
>>1326015
I forgot quests are pretty fun when Kek isn't shoving giant, misshapened dice up my asshole
>>
>>1326092
Don't invoke his wrath further, anon
>>
>>1326015
Thanks for running, on a scale of 1 to 10, how badly injured are we?
>>
>>1326111
You're recovering, so only like a 3 or 4
>>
>>1326120
why are only side characters allowed to have new or interesting powers in your quests
>>
>>1326130
Because you guys never try anything different
>>
>>1326120
Oh, that's good, at least we aren't too fucked up.
>>
>>1326136
you never give us the chance to, there's been a bunch of interesting ideas discussed so you gotta give us a chance to use them
>>
>>1326158
>Never give you the chance

>I allow write-ins

>I included that sort of thing as a training option

>None of you ever go off the beaten path

Not my fault
>>
>>1326158
Honestly, its the same problem in DB Quest, people think it's all GAINZGAINZGAINZ and usually the Technique minded individuals end up a vocal minority
>>
>>1326170
>training option
didn't you interrupt all of our training sessions so far?
look man at the end of the day you and the players have to do something to make this quest less boring and generic or its gonna keep dying and you're in a better position to encourage creativity than any player

Thanks for running, Son.

Given the poison spitting, this is my headcanon for demon #3, except of course blue skim and being way more of an evil bitch.

Spoilers because a little lewd.
>>
>>1326220
You sicken me
>>
>>1326241
You tell em, Som
>>
>>1326191
>>1326194
honestly the best way to do something creative is to think outside the box.

a creative write in can easily gain player support.

of course a suicidally stupid write in can too
>>
>>1326446
the players have always chosen spirit gun over any creative write-in during battle
the problem is they're too afraid to try new things during combat without training with it first
>>
>>1326458
not entirely true.

this quest hates spirit gun, and dbz took a chance to create the ki sword mid fight.
>>
>>1326458
Trying new things on the fly is a good way to get killed in a SOM quest
>>
>>1326485
not always, just roll a 100.
>>
>>1326473
>this quest hates spirit gun
it's our only technique that we use in every single battle because it's easier to just vote for the premade spirit gun option than any write-ins that require brainpower
>dbz took a chance to create the ki sword mid fight
that's nice but it has nothing to do with this quest
>>
>>1326241

Sorry, Son. The similarities were just way too fitting.

1. But on a serious note, how drained are Will and Stephanie?

2. Does the final demon know anything about us?

3. How good is Damon going to be once the poison wears off? I'm sure going all Captain America took considerable Spirit Energy similar to a Rei Gun.
>>
>>1326485
I think this is one of the problems with som's quest. they operate strictly with anime tropes to the extreme until som randomly decides that they don't, there's no consistent tone
>>
>>1326521
>anime tropes are a problem
>in an anime quest
>>
>>1326557
learn to read nigga that's not what I'm saying at all
>>
>>1326557
That's not what he said
>>
>>1326170
Fuck you, the second we took time to train you had a demon already know we were coming and challenge us to a duel.
>>
>>1326561
oh I understand that your complaining about a percieved lack of consistency.

i just think thats an asinine thing to complain about.

SOM has other issues that are much more relevant.

in this quest players themselves decided to break anime conventions, SOM cant really be blamed for following votes.
>>
>>1326573
Yeah, i'm pretty sure we we're going to work on techniques that day too
>>
>>1326617
He wants us to just come up with something ridiculous in the middle of a fight, and then die because it was DC90.

The reason side characters can do cool things is that they're not subject to dice.
>>
>>1326649
that's what I'm talking about, anime tropes like the midfight powerup only work for side characters but som suddenly becomes super harsh if we were to try something like that. it's inconsistent.
>>
okay so I see Damon as essentially becoming caltain america. it seems like the most logical extension of his current abilities.

As for will.

in his first fight with suldon, and in the fight with that loser right before silisha will displayed stronger than usual increases in strength due to spirit energy.

he stabbed a demon to death on day one hour one with a board.

I say we enroll him in martial arts since the dice clearly favor physical attacks.
>>
>>1326665
It's almost like the only reason anime stuff works is because it's a scripted event, and random chance/multiple choice means that you're just gonna fall flat on your face.
>>
>>1326859
that's just as boring and unoriginal as the spirit gun, we need something more exciting. I wanna use spirit energy to enhance weapons in some way.
>>
>>1326885
or maybe som should set DCs for that kind of thing lower instead of punishing us for thinking on our feet
>>
>>1326890
we could try developing telekinesis along with an impressive array or knives.

and martial arts
>>
>>1326885
by the same logic, why not always do the awesomest thing possible if success is random?

I dare do all that may become a man, who dares more is none.
>>
>>1326890
Well, to make something "more exciting" we apparently have to ignore everything that's "already been done." So, no Spirit gun, sword, or shield. I think it would be asking too much to use our powers of "meh" to throw out a power/spirit negation technique. Maybe spirit rope? Trip/tie people, use it to swing/maneuver the battlefield? A dispersed field of spirit energy that helps us see/feel incoming attacks and eventually react in the most unconcerned manner conceivable?
>>
>>1329783
I think the last one, the spirit field, is really fucking cool. Fits Will's personality too.
>>
>>1329863
Might not actually be too draining since it's a light field of spirit around us. We might be able to up it later for moving or blinding or hiding things in the field
