You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

===============

Your travels have gone unnoticed, at least as far as you know. There have been no pursuers and Myrddin's heard nothing about suspicious assassins looking for you. At this rate, you'll arrive at Aurwain ahead of schedule and without incident.

The tranquility has given you more time to plot. You've reserved some rooms at an inn - actually one of Myrddin's safehouses - and while Eleri, Reagan and Nimue are sleeping with the babies, you, Myrddin and Olwen are taking the opportunity to sit around a good bottle of wine and plot.

>Your uncle. What kind of trap can you set for him?
>Reagan. How much support does she have in Gwyrddarfordir?
>Your brother. How is he handling his responsibilities?
>Your father. Is he still looking to pass on the Crown?

"I'm concerned about Reagan," you say. "How much support does she have in Gwyrddarfordir?"

"In this case, the choice of moving to Degfford was fortuitous," Myrddin says. "The nobles who are most familiars with Olstren and the problems it faces are also the nobles who are most familiar with the work she's done in Gwyrddarfordir. The rest of the nobility is just neutral."

"That's about what my contacts are saying," Olwen says. "Most nobles who aren't close to Olstren simply don't care."

Myrddin raises an eyebrow. "You have contacts?"

"Yes, Myrddin." Olwen rolls her eyes. "I have vassals, peers and other people I need to stay in contact with for one reason or another."

"It isn't much, but it's better than a bad impression," you say. "Still, we should improve her reputation if we can, if only for the future."

"Certainly," Myrddin says. "What did you have in mind?"

>[Sovereign/1d6] Reagan is a princess and your wife; see to it that the nobles openly declare where their loyalties lie.
>[Intrigue/1d8] Spread the word that Reagan's good side is also your good side.
>[Dilettante/1d6] You'll bring Reagan to a few celebrations and help her show off a little.

"I was already planning on going to a few parties," you say. "I'll bring Reagan to a few and so she can mingle."

Parties are great. Everyone's having a good time, there's food and alcohol everywhere to calm people down and when there is business to take care of, it's handled more casually. It's a low-pressure environment - unless someone gets challenged to a duel, anyway - so people tend to be more pleasant to each other. With Reagan's personality, it'll be easy for her to work things out.

"Eleri will be more than willing to help," Olwen says. "And your mother as well, I suppose."

This could be useful to your plans as well. If Reagan gets some supporters of her own, it'll be easier for you to request some favours to deal with your uncle.

"What about my brother? Is he handling his responsibilities well?"

"As far as I can tell," Myrddin says, "he's the same as always. He's popular with the commoners, but his popularity with the nobility is… uncertain. They're still not sure how to deal with his commoner wife and you are familiar with this ideas of rulership."

"Throw baubles at the commoners and ignore the needs of the nobility," you say. To be fair, your brother's heart is in the right place, but he just take it much too far. It'd be fine if he was more aware of the framework that holds the kingdom together. "Mother hasn't been able to do anything about him?"

"The Queen has been curtailing his excessive generosity and fixing his mistakes as much as possible, but it's not a long-term solution," Myrddin says. "She can't look after him forever."

Neither can you, for that matter. You'll have to move to Olstren eventually, at which point you'll no longer be able to look after your brother. You've been focused on your own work in Degfford lately, but it seems that you now need to return to old habits.

>You'll speak with your brother when you can. Hopefully, you can convince him to be a little more reasonable.
>[Dilettante/1d10] Since you're going to the nobility's parties, you'll drag your brother along and insist he familiarizes himself with their concerns.

"I might as well drag him to the parties as well," you say. "Hopefully, he'll be in a sociable mood."

Besides, it'll give you a chance to get to know his wife better. More importantly, it'll give the nobility a chance to warm up to her as well. If you're lucky, she'll be able to do something to drum up support for herself.

"I'll write a convincing speech for you," Myrddin says. "I'm sure he'll accept this time."

"Maybe you can convince him it would be to his wife's benefit," Olwen says. "Surely she could use some rest as well."

"I'd hardly call those parties restful," you say, "but I get your point. The important thing is to get him to agree."

Reagan and Crown Prince Haul are your most pressing concerns, but you're still worried about your father and your uncle. Although things will or at least might become more manageable once your father retires, you still want to make sure he's sorted out comfortably and his web of contacts and supporters will still be useful to the kingdom for many years to come.

As for your uncle, his web of supporters is a liability that must be dealt with somehow.

Yeah, it's time to decide what you're going to do about your father. You haven't kept in touch much, but you do know he's been delegating more tasks to your brother to help him get ready to take over the kingdom. It's likely that your father plans to abdicate within the next few years and live our the rest of his life reminiscing about old war stories.

It's not a bad plan. In fact, it's surprisingly responsible. Haul will get used to the job and the thrown everything will be in place for him to take over, averting a messy succession. There wouldn't be a succession crisis per se, but the sudden death of a king always causes a certain amount of confusion.

The problem with this, however, is that your mother has your father firmly under her thumb and knows exactly how to handle him so the kingdom runs pragmatically. She can't do the same with your brother.

"It shouldn't matter much if you can straighten the Crown Prince out," Olwen says. "So long as her majesty can give him a little bit of guidance every now and then, that should be enough."

"It's the timing that's the problem," Myrddin says. "We have no idea how things will go with the Crown Prince, so talking with the king might not be necessary. However, we'll all be quite busy during the winter, so if you do want to convince your father to keep the thrown a few years longer, we still need to plan ahead."

Naturally, if you don't have to spend time convincing your father to stay on the job, you'll be able to spend more time with your brother to convince him to be more responsible instead, so it does balance the scale out a little.

This might be a talk we should have with momma first. She's the best one to know how thigns have been going in the capital.

This also leads to the messy situation with our Uncle. Would the Queen be supportive of our plan to eliminate him? Should we even bring it up with her? I know she's not his family by blood but any civil conflict brings up instability. Especially if we fuck up.

It’s better if you focus on your brother. He'll have to become a truly responsible king eventually, so you might as well make sure it gets done now rather than later. Besides, your father wouldn't retired unless your mother thought it was a good idea in the first place.

You're still not sure how you're going to approach Haul about the subject, but you'll figure it out when the time comes.

"And finally, my uncle." You finish your glass of wine and sigh. "Myrddin?"

"Your cousins Ivor, Mabon and Marged will be in Aurwain as well," Myrddin says. "Your youngest cousin Rhys is expected to look after your uncle's holdings. Things are expected to stay quiet, so it's a good chance for him to gain experience without much risk."

"You're absolutely certain my uncle let his guard down?" You ask. "This isn't a trap?"

"I'm completely certain," Myrddin says. "If you want to assassinate him, this will be the best opportunity."

"He is the youngest," Olwen says, "so his death wouldn't cause much chaos in the long run. However, it might alert your uncle that something is wrong."

"It'll take time to send a message during the winter," you say. "Can you carry it out with precise timing?"

"Certainly, your highness," Myrddin says. "It will put some pressure on our end to carry out your plans - whatever they might be - but it can be done, if you wish."

"Leave him be for now," you say. "Even if the odds are on our side, I don't want to risk tipping our hand too early. Let's focus on our uncle for now."

"He's a cautious man when it comes to his own safety, and even if he doesn't know what we're planning, he'll still be wary of you just in case," Myrddin says. "We won't be able to just approach him from out of nowhere."

"In other words, we need to subvert one of his people," you say. "My cousins must have something we can use to trick them into helping us."

"Everyone has their vices," Myrddin agrees, "but I don't know what, precisely, your cousins will be indulging in while we're at the capital. If we can arrange a clandestine meeting through them, we'd have an opportunity to assassinate your uncle."

"He'll have guards, though," Olwen says. "Elite guards, most likely, if he thinks he can trust them with what's starting to sound like an illegal meeting."

"Probably," Myrddin says, "but it's a moot point until we have a more concrete plan."

Focusing on one of your cousins will be easier, but a broader investigation will provide more options… so long as everything goes according to plan.

"That just leaves one final detail." Myrddin grins and pushes up his glasses. "How do you want to make your grand entrance?"

"I thought we'd agreed I wouldn't show up my brother?"

"This and that are different things," you say. "Besides, you just said you wanted to increase Reagan's standing. Entering Aurwain at full parade would help with that."

It's not like you're adverse to basking on the adulation of the people and having glory heaped upon you, although breeding doesn't seem quite as noteworthy to you as winning war. You suppose it is a much bigger deal to certain people.

There's just one slight problem with that.

"Mother will want to see the children first."

"That would be congruent with everything I know about her," Olwen says. "And it's not like you can parade with her either."

It would kill two birds with one stone if you could meet with her outside the city and bring her along with Reagan and you, but the situation doesn't warrant it. At best, it would look odd. At worst, people would think you're still dependent on your mother at your age.

Sure, it wouldn't be completely untrue, but appearances must be maintained and all that.

"We'll enter along with a grand parade," you say. "This is an opportunity to celebrate. I'll make it up to mother somehow."

You'll need horses and some sort of guard, but Myrddin should be able to acquire that on short notice, perhaps even use this as an opportunity to smuggle some of his people into the city without drawing any attention to them. No doubt his contacts will arranged for banners to be put up and for the streets to be clear.

Those are just details though. It has been some time since you've been in the capital, and you need to remind people what you look like and, more importantly, who you are.
