Another job well done.

You slam your pocket-flask down in front of the bartender. Instinctively, he grabs the steel container and takes it behind the counter.

"Want a drink, Princess?"
"No, (I'll take a shot, just make sure the maids don't see me drinking.)"

"Aye."

You are Jack Albator, protector of the fluffy tails, solver of all problems big and small, but also-
"Here you go, sir. Two scotch shots."

-Also a man of his word.
You take one of the small shots and shiftly hand it to Tuile. She turns toward the wall and quickly hits it.
It's almost adorable, and you can't help but smile.

"'Ey Lass." You smirk at her.
"Huh?" Tuile quietly hands the tiny glass back to you.

"Ye almost missed." You point to sheen of alcohol on her upper lip.
"Oh! Uh-"

Before she has time to respond; you swiftly move in. Your lips grasping hers in way that causes her body to solidify.
Of course, you don't want people spreading rumors. Quickly, you back away from Tuile.

Her puzzled face is more than enough of a reward for you.

"A-"
"So, what's on the agenda today, Princess?" You wink.

That last little jab was worth the light hit to the shoulder that she met it with.

"I WAS going to spend today with Charlotte in talks with the big battle we have planned at the end of the week; but I guess that's out the window."
"Battle?"
"Right, another practice-battle. We've been putting one off for a while because of the recent events, but it's due time to have another. This time we would have been fighting Bruschetta, but I guess that's probably not going to happen, now."

Behind her, slightly out of focus, you can see Yuuki carry Kayda away. Several guards escort them as they head upstairs.
Louise, one of Kayda's closest friends, tries to follow after her. One of the adults tells her to run along, and she does that.
Except she's running along toward you. In your direction.

Oh boy.

"Jaaack! Tuiiiile!" Louise stops just before you and Tuile.
"What is it sweetie?" Tuile smiles. She's way better with kids than you are.

"I don't really know what happened to Kayda, but I wanted to tell Charlotte. Can you come tell her with me?"

>Aye, we'll tell her all about it later. Right now we have princess n' hero stuff to talk 'bout. Serious stuff.

You turn around and tap the two glasses on the bar.
Somehow, the bartender was already expecting this. He awaits readily with a jug of scotch.

You drink both tiny shotglasses in a heartbeat.

Ah, good stuff.
It's such good stuff; that it seems to have triggered something important in the noggin'.

"'Ey, isn't there like, a maid on the loose or somethin'?"
"What?"
"Maid? Like, Kayda's Maid?" Louise blinks.

"Aye, Kayda's maid."

With that thought on the cusp of your mind; you turn around toward the bar.
Immediately, you're presented with the two shotglasses filled all the way up to the brim. You've trained him very well!

Quickly, you gulp down the liquor and turn back to the girls.

"She kinda left with the young one, aye think. At least accordin' to Yuuki."

"Left with the-" Tuile thinks about your words.
"Young one?" Louise seems confused.

It clicks with the both of them almost instantly.
"SHE TOOK GRETA?!"
"The maid ran off?" Tuile's tail, her beautiful, beautiful tail, sways behind her. "You mean, the one we were harboring? Why?"

"Aye think we made a mistake trustin' a bear."

Oh, and you made a mistake of not getting that shotglass when it was in your line of sight. You spin back around and complete your most important duty.

"What are we going to do?!" Louise's eyes seem to tremble, "Greta is Kayda's summoner!"

"Lass, calm down. Kayda hasn't been away from 'er long. She can last a while. Fer right now, let's go break the news to the white cat."
"Charlotte." Louise's gaze is at her toes, "Her name is Charlotte."

--

Louise happily opens the door to her room, and you're met with an interesting sight.

There's the white-haired princess of Gallete, Charlotte, sitting on her bed. Perched next to her is a familiar face.
A black-haired young girl, with a pendant around her neck. They're both peering inside of a book unfolded in Charlotte's lap.

"M." Charlotte repeats to the young kitten, "This letter is M, 'mm', 'mm', say that."
"mm?"
"Right! That!" Charlotte scratches behind the younger cat's ear.

"E-excuse me?"
"EEK!" Charlotte jumps. "W-w- Jack! Louise! Tuile! W-hat are you doing here?!"

"Oh wow!" Tuile gushes, "You're tutoring Elise, that's cute!"
"N-no it's not." Charlotte's eyes turn toward the bookshelf.

"Is that my new aunt?!" Louise hops over to the bed, and flops down next to her.
"W-what?"

"'ey Charlotte." You give her a slight smile, "You'd make a great mother."
"S-stop! Seriously!" The white cat is absolutely flush, "I- I was just helping her with her reading! She's far behind other children of her age."

"Thank you Charlotte." The black-haired girl next to her takes the opportunity to remove her eyes from the book and set them on her mentor. "I like having a big sister."
"No! Not you, too!"

Charlotte blushes slightly at the praise. Her slender, white tail continues to twitch and shake despite her protests.

You smile at the two sisters, but then remember something important.
"Ey Lass, ye ever remember that ye had a brother?"

"I- I've been asking about that." Elise looks toward the bed, "I don't remember my brother, at all. I'm not sure if he's telling the truth or not."

Well, that's a problem for another time. She may be manipulated just like Kayda was being manipulated, for all you know.
As fun as this is, you have more important things to worry about.

"Charlotte, as fun as it is to see ye embarrassed, we have important things to discuss."

"Important?" That almost cute-facade flips back to the cold kitty that you know.

"Aye, Kayda's been in a fight, and her summoner has been kidnapped."

Her eyes grow wide.
"Dear, can you take a break for a few minutes? Grown-ups need to talk about grown-up stuff."
"Okay.." Elise hops off the bed and bows. Slowly, she steps out into the hallway.

Slowly, Tuile shuts the door behind you. Charlotte stands up from the bed, and puts the book away.

"Kayda's summoner has been kidnapped?" Charlotte closes her eyes, "I suppose you're here because it was Gallete Special Forces at play?"
"No, Lass. Not at all." You shake your head, "We're 'ere because it was Konditorei's maid at play."

She blinks.
"What maid?"
"The maid accompanin' Greta, Konditorei's princess. Remember? She's the one who set up the fake weddin'."

Her eyes blink with realization.
"You know, strangely enough, I completely forgot she was even here."
"Aye, she didn't really stand out."

"Do you know her motives? Is she working with the assassins?"
"Aye don't think so, she wants somethin' else. She got a little rough with Kayda, and maybe that's why she fled? Din' want angry heroes like Yuuki smashing her into the dirt."

"Well, what are you going to do about it?"

If you're wondering where I've been the past hour, the answer is: My internet connection died! For literally no reason!

It's still dying for no reason! So, to balance it out. I'm going to have to go to bed now. Which means last story post will have to hang around for the night until my connection is better.

Yeah, I'm not worried about the hurricane just yet (don't rule it out in the near future, though). Right now, my internet is basically toast, so I'm having problems doing basic actions.

At the moment, I have no cable internet, just a 3G (yes, 3G. No 4G here) dongle. I'll be fixing that in the near future, but it's what has caused many problems for me in the last couple of months.

What are you going to do about it?

What a strange question the white cat has for you.

You're already certain about what you're going to do.
-that is, you're going to slake the thirst left over from the scotch. Dry stuff, that is.

You take out your flask and take a big gulp from it.

She did leave something behind, something that might help in tracking her down, or perhaps-

"The wine." You say, before coughing. "She left a tiny bit'a wine behind, the disappearin' kind."

"Is it enough to make a whole person disappear?"

"Aye think we may not need that, we may just needa find out what was in it te figure out where she went?"
"Can you do that?" Charlotte tilts her head.
"Dunno, Aligot was workin' on it."

"..Anything else?"

You take another drink of the flask, and remember something else Yuuki told you.
The ring was important not because it could control people, but because it worked a little like talking to someone.

Maybe.. you can still talk to the maid using the ring?

"Hey, what if we used the ring to-"

"I'm not putting it on." Charlotte immediately jumps to conclusions.
"And neither should you." Tuile crosses her arms. "Are you nuts? What if it takes hold of you just like it took hold of Kayda? I don't think anyone here can tackle you and pry it off your fingers, Jack."

"Aw, come on Lasses. It'll be fine." You take the ring that was once embedded in Kayda's neck out of your pocket. "Aye'm sure I can take it."

"Yes, but I'm not sure we can." Tuile pouts.

"Then, we ask Yuuki to send 'er a message." You put the ring away, "After all, we just needa know her demands, and we can start tryin' to-"

"Why do you think she would have demands?" Charlotte asks a very important question.
"Wha?"
"She just took Greta and left, right? How do we know she even has any demands?"

"Of course she has demands, she wants money, power, SOMETHIN' that we can try to use against her."
"What if she doesn't? What if picking up and leaving was just her fallback plan and she really doesn't want anything? How do we get Kayda's summoner back, then?"

"Try notta think 'bout that." You take another drink from the flask.

"Well, I was thinking." Charlotte stands up. "I was talking to Amaretti the other day, and she mentioned that there is a way to change summoners."
"Huh?"

"Yeah, I was kind of baffled when I heard it, too. Something about re-writing the contract, I don't know the details. Maybe we could do that on Kayda?"

>Let's put that as a 'maybe' and worry about the task at hand.
>Aye, okay, let's go ask Amaretti.

"Aye, that sounds like a great plan! Let's go-"

You realize something important: Kayda may not be entirely with this plan.

"-Let's go see if Kayda is awake. We'll put that as our backup option."

"Oh! Really? Can we really go see Kayda?!"
Louise, who you forgot was even in the room with you, explodes in happiness.

"Only if I go with you." Charlotte grabs her tiny hero into a hug.

Louise turns her face up from Charlotte's chest.
"Kayda wasn't hurt by that, was she?"

Tuile worriedly flashes you a glance. You notice Charlotte isn't saying anything either.
Great.

"Louise, no. Kayda isn't hurt."
"..Really?"
"Yar, really. Kayda can't get hurt. She's a hero. There's no way she is hurt physically."

Physically, right?

--

You knock on Yuuki's door, and are met with the sound of silence.

"Yuuki? Aye wanted to check on Kayda. Can we see her?"

Silence.
Suddenly, there's a very tiny voice from inside.

"Now isn't a good time, can you come back some other time?"

"What's wrong? Please just spit it out."

"Kayda.. isn't feeling well." Yuuki sighs from behind the door. "I don't think she wants to talk at the moment."

"Not feelin' well?"
"R-right."

You tap on the door, trying to think of how to corner Yuuki's evasiveness.

"How is she not 'feelin well'?"
"She's not talking, and every word she says is just 'I'm sorry'. I don't think there is much to talk about right now."

Louise immediately steps forward.

"KAYDA!" She yells into the door, "KAYDA! NO ONE IS MAD AT YOU! PLEASE COME TALK WITH US!"

Silence.
Yuuki adjusts her voice.

"Can you come back later? She keep asking to see Greta but- (I haven't told her yet.)" Yuuki parts the door slightly to whisper that last sentence.
"Is there anythin' we can do?"

"Yes, one more thing. Do you have the ring I gave you earlier?"

You pull the ring out of your pocket which perfectly matches the one taken from Kayda.
"Aye."

Gently, she props the door open. You hand her the ring.
"There's a certain someone I'm meeting with tonight who I think will tell me more about the ring. I may have to let them know that the meeting is canceled."

>Now, hold on, ye had a lead on this ring thing and ye didn't tell me?

"Now, hold on." You keep Yuuki from closing the door. "Ye had a lead on this ring thing and ye didn't tell me?"
"It's not like I wanted to." Yuuki has a sour look on her face. "I got roped into it yesterday when I was trying to investigate the spying."

"So what kinda lead did ye find?"
"The ring lets people talk to one another, from a great distance away."

"Like.. ten feet? A hundred feet?"
"I don't think it has a range, and it feels instant. Much faster than sending a letter."

You wish you had rings like that in your freebootin' days. It would have been way easier to coordinate attacks with something like that than with semaphores.

"So, what kind of meeting is this?"
"Apparently, I accidentally stole some investigator's place." Yuuki frowns. "I asked to meet him tonight so we could straighten this all out, and maybe so I could get off this case."

That seems like a valid, and perfectly reasonable explanation as to why she didn't tell you.
"Okay, Lass. Go to the meeting tonight."

"Jack, I can't. Kayda. Kayda needs someone here."

"Yuuki, yer doin' important hero stuff." You tap just in front of her face, "Ye need to be there to follow through on that. Kayda will be fine."

"But-"

"Aye'll stay with Kayda, Louise, Me, Dorje, we'll keep Kayda safe, alright?"

She frowns slightly, but nods all the same.

"It's in a couple hours.."
"Right, stay with Kayda until then. we'll come back in a few to swap."

She closes the door gently, and you turn back to Tuile.

Louise turns to Charlotte.
"That means.. Kayda is going to be okay, right?"

"R-right." Charlotte, clearly not knowing what to say, simply pats Louise's head.
Quietly, she glances in your direction. Clearly she wants an easy out to somehow distract Louise from Kayda's health.

"Listen, sweetie, could ye go get Dorje and see how he's doin'? He kinda got burned from head to toe."
"Aww. Okay." She pouts, but obediently slinks off toward the stairwell.

Charlotte sighs in relief, but looks extremely serious when her eyes meet yours.
"Thank you Jack, for everything you've done. I know Gallete isn't very appreciative at times."

At times.

That's enough to make you take your flask out again.

"-But, I do appreciate how hard you work for the safety of others." Charlotte bows slightly. "You have my gratitude."
"Gratitude is payable in fine liquors and silver, aye?"

Tuile smirks, but Charlotte groans under her breath.
Old habits, die hard.

"Goodnight Mr. Albator." She turns and walks toward the stairs.
But, just before she can disappear to her floor, she turns back to you.
"Oh, one more thing. If you see that boy who is claiming to be my brother." Charlotte must be referring to that little kid thief, the one who claims that Elise is his sister. "-Please send him to me. I really want to meet him."

"Aye, will do."

That is, if he isn't already behind bars at this moment. He wasn't the most swift thief you've ever known. Maybe you can go to the town stockade later, just in case.

"So, Jack." Tuile spins to face you, promptly covering your face in brown fluff. "What do we do now?" She smiles, in that very big grin she's known for.

"Drink."
"Sounds good!"

"Aye, wait. Aye just remembered somethin'. Aye think Camille may have wanted to speak with ye."

She tilts her head, "Really?"

"Yar, maybe a lass-to-lass thing."

You return to the lobby with Tuile in tow. Quickly, you track down Camille.

"'Ey Camille."
"Oh, hey."

She appears to be helping Atsuko search through the imprint she made.

"-Wanna go drinkin'?"
"Jack, you know I shouldn-"

She stops herself.
Then she notices Tuile standing next to you.

"..Sure, Atsuko, can you handle the rest?"
"Yeah, yeah, it's fine." Atsuko mindlessly waves her off. "Come back to the shrine later, and we'll work on that ritual."
"Will do!" She smiles.

Slowly, she starts to walk away from the crowd that had gathered. Most of them trying to understand what is going on.
Fritelli stands in front of them, barking commands, information, and orders.

Camille twitches her ears, and stretches.
Suddenly, she almost looks as if she's going to fall over. Her arms quickly grab onto your sleeve, and she regains balance.

Within an instant, she turns her head toward you and smiles.

Yikes.

Tuile, noticing this, suddenly seems oddly worried.

Fortunately, she keeps the obvious question to herself as the three of you head toward the bar.

--

"Tuile."
"Mm?"

"Can we order something and take it upstairs?"
"Sure, what's the occasion?"

"Ye need me 'round for this?"

"Yeah, sure. Why not? You and Tuile may want to talk about it." Camille smiles.
Tuile, on the other hand, seems as puzzled as ever.

You grab some glasses and a couple of bottles, and head upstairs.
Most of them are for you, but you suspect Tuile will drink some.
Speaking of which, Tuile is getting more and more suspicious.

"Camille?"
"Hmm?"
"Not gonna drink anything?" Tuile rightfully notices that, while you carry three bottles and she carries one, Camille has nothing in her hands.

"Right, right, about that. Come inside."

Tuile appears to be genuinely worried for her friend, now.
She's upset to the point where, when Camille manages to shut the glass door behind her, Tuile immediately presses the attack on her friend.

"Oh my god, Camille, you're not terminally ill are you?! I knew that demon-hunting stuff was always bad news!"

Camille spins around, and is quick to put up the defense.
"No, no! Tuile! I'm not sick!"

"T-then what is it? Are you moving away? Did someone die?"
"Tuile, Tuile, no, stop, stop. Just. Come here."

Gently, as to not attract suspicion, Camille leans over to Tuile and whispers into her ear.
Immediately, Tuile's tail and ears start to bounce and leap.

"OH MY GOD YOU HAD AN OFF-SEASON-"
"SHH! SHH!" Camille cups a hand over Tuile's mouth.

"Mmmph mm!" Tuile finishes her thought.

Tuile places her hand on Camille's cupped palm, and gently slides it off her mouth. Revealing a very sheepish grin.
"Who?" Is the only question Tuile needs to ask.

Camille gulps, red nipping at her otherwise peach-colored cheeks.
"Cody." Is the only answer Camille needs.

Immediately; Tuile freezes, her eyes grow wide, and her tail falls limp.

You didn't quite expect that reaction. So, you decide to just take one of the bottles for yourself.

Thanks for the thread everyone. I'm sorry if these seem to be slowing down as time goes on. I think what needs to happen is that I just pick Tuesday as the running day and maybe another day like Wednesday or Thursday and just run on those days instead of what I'm doing now. It can't be easy for people to follow a thread that I only update once an hour.

Anyway, we'll try those changes in the future.

Let me know what you thought of the thread, and let me know what I should change or if you have any suggestions.

Until next time!

thanks for running

yeah, running twice a week would surely improve things

I think it's more that you don't seem to be posting once every hour as you said you would, so no one really knows when to expect any updates.

This is a huge problem I've noticed. On weeks where I normally would have postponed or canceled, I've tried instead uploading the thread and just updating for the next few days anyway. Because, in my beady little mind, the thread is going to last a week whether I want it or not anyway so uploading it on the scheduled day is fine as long as I come back to it.

Clearly, this little scheme of mine isn't working out. I'm going to return to strict Tuesdays and maybe another day like Thursday where I post like crazy as I normally would. If I can't make the session that day? Postpone. IE: exactly as if I was running on /tg/ again.

I had thought that being able to update in bursts after work would have worked out, but clearly I overestimated my updating ability.

Starting next week, I'll pretend I'm still on /tg/ and we'll get threads with at least 10+ updates before I go to bed. Then maybe we can discuss upping it to two scheduled runs per week.

Remember when I used to run twice a week? I kind of miss that. Plus, I kind of have no reason to not run twice a week now considering that CPM is over.

So, we'll see how that goes.
