A man sits with a child amid the orchids of the green courtyard, the man's silver-streaked hair blowing in the same wind whistling between the many monks sparring. Stories are spoken and lost freely in the wind, as the boy- weighed with silence- continues to look rather than listen.

Which was just fine with the old monk.

"A monk's life is one of peace, Amon. Life is to always be preserved or created. A monk will never attack another; A monk will never kill," Myatsuu recites, his eyes still closed in meditation. A weary smile on his face.
"But, what would it mean to allow oneself to be killed? A life is allowed to be taken, and are not all lives sacred? These are our questions. It is fitting our answer is one of repentance. A monk trains, prays, and strives a lifetime to cleanse his own soul for the duty he undertakes. He pay honor to the lives he may eventually claim. To kill one other is to kill the self."

The older man laughs, shaking his head.
"All of those lives...do not fear death as I have, Amon. Where you go, the souls of those closest to you will always follow.""

The wind whistles as the man continues to meditate, watching over the combatitive grounds. The boy continues to gaze into space, as if staring would recover those stories not already lost.
~silence~
"Where are my family, Myatsuu?" the boy suddenly asks.
"Are...Did...they-"

Myatsuu opens his eyes and looks at you for a few minutes before he gives you a small smile.

"You will always find your family here, Amon.
You will always have us to count on."

"Amon! Where did you go?"

The man looks the boy in the eyes, and helps him to his feet.

"Hey, I think I found him! Quick, Rin, take a look at this!"

"I will always be with you. If not here," he motions around to the Temple.

"Is he meditating or something?"

He points to your heart,"then in here."

"No snoozing on the job, now!"
You feel someone grab your shoulders and start shaking you awake.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_3fsMW1uSM

>Your name is Amon Shuu, a humble monk of the Water Temple.
>You have no family to speak of, another one of the many casualties of the 2nd Shinobi World War. Your luck pulled through when a wandering monk, Myatsuu, snatched you from the debris of a border skirmish between Konohagakure and Kirigakure with your village having been reduced to rubble in the midst of battle. You were 4 years old. The monk, Myatsuu, brought you back to the Water Temple in the marshy coastlines of the Land of Water.

>Nearly 14 years later, the Temple- your home- has just fallen to attackers from the Village Hidden in the Mist after a young girl. Leaving to honor your duties, you travel across lands to deliver the merchant, Yoru, safely to his destination and find any surviving monks of your order. This is where your story begins.

You awake with a snap, the first thing your greeted by is a bright, mischievous grin.

"Ah, so the monk is awake now? We'd been wondering where you go off to every time we make a stop for a bit."

The "we" he was referring to probably included the girl, Rin, who followed in tow. She hadn't said much, or nearly anything besides her name for that matter.

You'd been on the road for the past 3 days since the Water Temple attack.

Needless to say, with Yoru around you'd been keeping a fairly...spirited pace.

You pick up your pack resting on the tree beside you.

>You want to talk to the girl a bit before leaving. She hasn't said much besides her name.
>You needed to refill the water by the nearby river, it was why you'd stopped in the first place.

>You want to discuss the dream you'd just had while meditating

Thoughts of the dream bother you, but first things come first. You'd stopped for a short break and to refill water. Yoru hadn't been too clear on the details of your destination, but clearly had a goal in mind considering the precision in his schedules.

"My apologizes, Yoru," you bow slightly. "Wait just a bit longer for me, I'd say we have a little bit of time to spare"

As you start down to the river, you can hear Yoru's annoyed grumbling from behind you, "Yeah, but I had plans to use those...."

But as you pass by Rin, she stoically continues to look away from the both of you- somewhere off into the woods around the small meadow.

The path down to the river is surprisingly dry, you note. Whatever the distance Yoru has had you cover so far must have been enough to change the landscape- less marshland than you are used to and larger woodlands.

You come across the river and crouch to fill the canteens, when something in the sediment happens to catch your eye.

In the dirt, at the corner of your vision just barely, you see it.
A single speck of red.

You reach into the river, cupping the loose sediment and your treasure with it.
As you carry it through the water, the dirt strips away from the face of the bright, gemlike beads.

It's a necklace of brightest red beads made of a material you don't recognize. they feel smooth and firm to the touch, but on first sight look almost like a drop of semi-translucent, ruby liquid. Every time you look at them you swear you the etchings on their many surfaces have changed.

>The Red Beads(?) [Scroll Completion: 162/?]
>Sealing Chakra and the Practition of Binding [Scroll Completion: 234/250]
As you continue to stare into the beads, their surfaces seem to churn occasionally, as if there some sort of a flowing current underneath their hard glassy shells.

You think you begin to see...shapes in them.

Small etchings, nearly invisible and only at the corner of your eyes. Hard written whispers at the edge of your vision that swirl into the churning red below.
You look back to the Book written by the Uzumaki. The symbols and methods described in the book seem almost secondhand to you now, as if you'd just remembered an odd forgotten memory.
>Sealing Chakra and the Practition of Binding [Scroll Completion: Complete]

>Amon has learned the "Heavenly Seal: Admantine Bind Technique"
>Not so much a technique as an augmentation. The technique initially aimed to concentrate and store chakra in specific parts of the body. The Uzumaki instead stumbled upon a method to shift and concentrate flows of chakra within their own bodies, allowing for greater control and manipulation of chakra. Tattoo the clan's sealing markings on themselves, the members of the Uzumaki clan would naturally explode chakra into the blood-written binds, theirselves allowing for the manipulation of energy into a form of solid matter. Cannot be undone, but the tattoo can be written in segments and over time to add more effects.

The beads leave you...entranced for a bit.
You think you see something flicker in one of the beads out the corner of your eye.

Yeah, it's time to put these away.

Stashing them and the book away, you move back towards the campsite. Before long, you can hear Yoru's telltale voice.

"I wonder how long it takes for the average person to get water...?" Yoru thinks out loud.

"No worries, I'm back..."

Tattoo yourself with seal mark

Manipulate chakra into the seal

Chakra will materialize into an object, usually a chain, according to the tattoo/seal's design.

The tattoo can be upgraded over time, adding more designs to produce other effects.

You take out the beads, laughing a bit.
"Check out today's catch!" You call as you toss the beads at Yoru.

He manages to snag them at the last minute, a bit surprised by the pitch.
His face, at first curious, slowly changes. His eyes narrow and he cocks his head while holding the object up to the sun.

"Hm...looks like fake ruby or such. Saw a few similar types being passed around the markets in The Land of Fire.
This is a remarkable quality of counterfeit, though." He tosses you back the beads nonchalantly.

Rin is staring at the beads, wide-eyed but otherwise expressionless. You look at them and wonder before you see the answer for yourself.
One of the 10 beads is openly shifting, churning, and twitching. The 3rd bead from the right then immediately goes glassy again, new etchings upon it's surface.
You read:
"Demon"

Rin shudders, but then turns to look away at the road in the distance.

"You know, where did you pick that thing up, Amon?" Yoru gestures, openly grinning like a kid.
"Think, treasures don't just appear in the forest. It had to come from somewhere."

You shrug, "Don't tell me you really think there is some sort of treasure in the forest."

"Hey, crazier things could happen"

You chuckle back at the businessman, "I guess I'll tag along. Not that I have anywhere else to go."

You decide to take a path through the forest. Though the beads were found in the river, it's entirely possible whoever had them before was traveling the area as well.
You walk on foot alongside Yoru, Rin trailing behind a bit. Through the bushes and trees you go, finding the tracks of what looks to be a wheeled cart in the loamy soil.

Looks like you may get somewhere after all.
You follow the tracks for what seems like an eternity through the endless rows of trees. Then, you see it.

An open clearing, an abandoned cart, and the scars of battle mark the scene before you.
There is a body amid the emptied boxes, their contents having been either taken or spilled onto the surrounding ground.

Rin and Yoru say nothing.

You walk towards the quiet scene, though you are at first hesitant to disturb anything here.
"Yoru, do you know-" You begin as you start rummaging through the remains and rubble.

"No, but..." He stares intently at the man on the ground.
"He's foreign. A merchant from the The Land of Wind, probably from Sunakagure I'd imagine."

You continue to rummage through the cargo. It seems like there are just general goods here: some spices, a few unique trinkets, and some food.
You kick open one of the untouched boxes idley.
Kunai, various tools, soldier pills, and military grade equipment spill out of the hole your foot made.

Well then.

"Interesting..." you hear Yoru muse again.
You turn to show Yoru your find, but see him intently inspecting something else. An arrow buried in the wood of the cart.
A single, blue-feathered arrow. Though, you spot the shaft of another fragmented arrow on the ground near the dead merchant.

"It turns out our friend here was taking different kinds of business," you heft the crate towards Norihime.

'Most likely, he was smuggling goods between territories. Probably charged quite a hefty price for it too. His method.... is far too expensive for my tastes. I do enjoy living after all." Yoru crosses his arms, concluding.
"He most likely played a wrong slide, ticked the wrong people off. These days, Kumogakure will attack any caravans not under their protection. Bandits, all of them."
Yoru scoffs.

"What about the arrow then?" You prod.

Yoru stops to consider for a moment, before just shrugging. "I guess our blue archer will remain a mystery. From the looks of it though...."
He takes another glance at the dead merchant.
"That may not be such a bad thing."

The scene leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Time to leave this place.
Yoru and Rin happily agree. Grabbing both the map from the seat of the wagon and the intact arrow, you set off into the woods.

Retracing part of the paths back, you step out into the sunshine of the afternoon light. The road ahead looks to be somewhat steeper. If not mountains, then hills and long grassy fields. Where are you headed, anyway?

You break out the map, determined to figure this mystery out. "Yoru, what direction are we headed?"

"Well, we should be about past the border of Konoha. I was planning to get us to the fork before asking you guys the relevant questions, buuuut...."
Yoru gives a devilish grin.

"I'll be nice and give you some extra time to think."
>"We can take the Northwest route to Konoha. We'd travel through the peaceful land of rivers and probably a part of Amegakure."
>"We take the eastern route. Quite the roundabout way if you ask me. But, we may still be trying to lose someone- who knows? There will be many interesting settlements and characters in the borderlands."

"I could've imagined a better salesman." You shake your head and keep trudging up the dirt path. It's long ahead and only getting steeper- perfect. This is a monk's path to take.
"Yoru, have you passed through this route before?" you ask, constraining excitement at possibly seeing the rest of your brothers from the Temple.

She hesitates for a minute.
"No. I think I may need to find Sakumo, unfortunately. I doubt I have anywhere I can go to anymore." She casually shrugs. "A day in the life."

Okay then...
"What was it with those beads, yeah?" You ask, changing the topic. She only twitches for a second at the mention of it, before giving you a grimace.

"Did you see how creepy those things were? Anyone would be grossed out by the glowing red, dirty stuff in the bottom of the riverbank. Not a monk, apparently."
"So, I'll take that as a....no thank you?" You guess.

She goes quiet. "You know what we saw. That isn't an ordinary piece of jewelry...I could feel it almost inspecting me. You think, deeply.
"It gave me a surge of power, of understanding of my surroundings," you nod, "I felt truly like I had the ability to do....well, anything."

"That...." She begins, a worried expression before shaking her head, "you sure are honest, I suppose. I wouldn't think someone like you would feel so passionately about that sort of thing."

"I guess you're only human after all," she concedes.

Whatever.
You're going up the mountain trail, stumbling about the path. Maybe you'd be fine riding in a cart yourselves next time. You wonder if the merchant Norihime has any money to his name or if he really just is a happy-go-lucky oddball.

Never trust a merchant.
Up the road, you begin to the the sparse settlements of a rocky country town.

A building here and a building there becomes a full settlement in the rocky knolls. Houses stick out at odd foundations in the terrain, build in the shadows of the plateau's and mountain ranges separating Konoha from the South.

"Yoru, what's the town up ahead?" You call up to the enthusiastic man leading the party.

'It doesn't have a name. These people are refugees from border skirmishes along the borders of The Land of Wind and The Land of Water. They originally believed their current circumstances wouldn't last long. In their optimism, they opted to not give names to their "temporary" dwellings...

...now they just keep it as a joke, I think. Where once it was a sign of faith and confidence, now it stands as a bastion for crime and intrigue. Not to mention completely out of the ordinary characters."

Walking into what looks to be a nearby ramen stand, you take several seats with your companions. A wide-brim hatted stranger with dark skin sits a seat apart from your group.

You and Yoru glance at each other, knowingly.

This person has a quiver of blue-feathered arrows.

[DC 18: Failed!]

The look you share with Yoru lasts a bit too long before passing on. It must have been too noticeable. But, when you glance back over at the other customer, he hasn't moved.

You might just get out of this yet.
A few moments pass as your food is served and you eat quickly and with purpose. As you finish collectively within a few minutes, you get up to leave having already paid.

"Before you go," a feminine voice calls from next to you.
It's the person with the blue arrows.
"I think you have something that belongs to me."

"Nope, not sure what you mean miss. Now, if you'll excuse me and my friends here..." Yoru practically pushes you out the door and up the road.

Well that's one way to end a confronta-
*Thump*
A blue-feathered arrow sinks itself into the ground in front of you.

"I'd say that looks pretty familiar to you," the dark-skinned woman calls out to you.
"Whats the news? Last I heard, there was an accident in the forests today. Know anything about that?" She asks, practically purring.

"Nope!" Yoru grins.

The woman seems flabbergasted for a minute. Before just chuckling and trying to stop from laughing all out.

"I can tell you'll be a handful in the future. When you inevitably tell of the acts done here, tell them it was-"

She removes her straw hat.

Beautiful cerulean hair bounds forth from under it in a long, threaded braid. It contrasts her caramel features. But mostly, it's...

She catches you off-guard with a surprisingly warm smile.
"-Kumo's Blue Hawk. But, to you...I'm Asa. Better watch your back."
She smiles before walking past your confused group, recovering her arrow, and continuing onto the mountain trails beyond.

Kumo's Blue Huntress- Asa.
Seems like you'll have reason to keep up the enthusiastic pace from now on.
"The sooner we cross, the safer we'll be. Let's go" You call to the still shocked companions.

It's been a long day.
After Rin stumbles for the second time out of exhaustion, you decided to persuade Yoru to stop here for the night. Surprisingly, he agrees without any resistance.

"I was hoping you'd say something," Yoru visibly deflates.
"I can't even tell when you're tired. I swear, you monks would make a rock seem emotional in comparison."

Have you really been that cold?
Yoru walks down the roads of the rocky village with a purpose. "I think I know a place we can stay. I hope that old man is still kicking...."
He walks up to one well-built, inconspicous shack out the mass of wooden buildings and people.

One knock on the door.
two knocks.
Three.
The constant mumor of the crowds around you seem to be the only resp-
5 knocks.
The door audibly clicks.
After a few moments, Yoru twists the doorknob and enters.

In contrast to what the quality of construction would suggest, what greets you inside is a comfortably furnished lodge of sorts- complete with fireplace.
Yoru closes the door behind the three of you and sits by a well-lacquered, if dusty, countertop with a sigh.
Rin takes the chance to drop her bag and collapses into a plush armchair by the lively fire.

You take your chance from the exhausted silence of the group to grab a chair from the corner. You pull it up next to the fire and sit, right across from Rin. She's seemed oddly quiet and you aren't sure what to take away from your last interaction with her. You enjoy the fire for a few minutes before you chance a glance towards Rin, she's curled up and practically a part of the chair.

"Want to talk?"

She uncoils a bit from within the chair and gives you a downcast look, "I owe you a few explanations, don't I? Sorry about...I was pretty out of it earlier. I was trying to play it off, but everything going on has left me kind of scared."

"Rin, at the temple...what happened? Sakumo shuffled into the shrine, you looked-he looked like a walking corpse, but you...
How did you live?"

Rin swings her legs from her fireside chair.
"I don't know. I just remember I woke up alive, being carried by you." She looks to you, hesitantly.

You remember that pretty well. You'd been walking alongside a energized Yoru when Rin had awoken in the arms of a strange man with a golden staff. A open hand and one sore cheek later, she was blushing with embarrassment.
Her name was Rin Nohara.

"Rin," you push back the recent memory, "Do you know who the ninja were who attacked us? Why did they atack the Temple?"

She shudders a bit before nodding, "The Seven Swordsmen of Kirigakure. I remember Sakumo fighting some of them. He was holding his own despite carrying me, he even managed to hurt a couple of them."

"But why were they after you?"

She pauses for a moment, her empty eyes say she's recollecting a distant memory.
"They sealed...something...in me. They called it the 'three-tailed', a demon.
I'm a monster." She begins to sob openly. Yoru looks back at you two, focus jarred from the dusty bottle he's holding.

Tears stream down and drip onto the chair as Rin cries, her face in her hands. You hear Yoru cough awkwardly, unsure of the situation himself. Sure, the monks at the Temple were human, but you don't remember ever having dealt with a situation like this before.
But you do remember...
"You will always find your family here, Amon.
You will always have us to count on."

You sit up and walk over to the girl, blinded by tears. You kneel down and give her a hug in the chair as she sobs.
After a few minutes and hiccups, she looks up at you, her eyes puffy.

"You can always count on us, Rin.
Monster or not, I'll be here for you."

For a minute, she looks at you with brighter eyes. She looks like she might cry again, but she smiles and nods.
"Thank you, Amon."

Thinking carefully, you decide to take another look at old Hiragan's project, the ancient journal. You'll probably have some time left, though. What to spend it on...
You thumb the beads through your fingers as you consider your choices.
Wait, beads...

You look down to see yourself playing with the red beads. You don't explicitly remember picking them up, though you must have taken them out with the other books without thinking. You stare at them for a minute and quickly stash them away. Something about them unsettles you.

You pick up the broken book and inspect the damage. While it certainly has seen better days, you think it should be mostly repairable. As you hold it up to assess the damage, a small note flutters out from between its pages. You catch it off-handedly and unfold the crunched, slightly torn paper.

"Amon,
If you are reading this, then it would mean you have left the Temple with Yoru. This book is my own work, a small collection of my own techniques that may help you on your journey. You are ready to learn them now. Use them wisely. Do good with them, my young student."

The note abruptly ends at a large rip, most likely from the same event that damaged the book. You don't have to guess who wrote it. Pushing aside the feeling swelling within you, you focus on the texts in front of you.

You unroll the large scroll of your predecessor, Hiragan. Before, you noted that the old archivist had footmarked an entire section with personal notes containing scribbles of seals and musings. You take the opportunity to cover the details of the scribbled seal closely. Every segmented facet of the design slowly reveals its secrets as you dissect the man's homemade sealing technique written in the empty space.

[Sealing Technique: Vitality Sealing Formation Learned!]
[A seal transcribed over an area, rather than on a person. Temporarily suppresses chakra (production and formation) for individuals within the area sealed.]

You manage to translate the design fairly well, though...
You unravel the scroll and see another wall of notes and patchwork symbols accompanying the faded text of the scroll itself. You're not quite done yet.

You put the scroll down and look around. Rin has fallen asleep in the armchair watching the fires, now slowly burning down. Yoru looks to be inspecting a map, taking periodic sips from a newly-cleaned glass from the shelves nearby. You take out some paper and a brush for the job that comes next.

You crack open your master's own damaged book and begin to transcribe the writing inside. At least, the writing that is still left. Unexpectedly, you can piece together enough of the text quite easily and manage to recover a technique written. Seems like he wrote this with you in mind.

[Earthen Seal: See-No-Evil Technique Learned!]
[The seal consists of two parts.
First, the user must first ascribe the first seal correctly on a sealing tag or cloth.
Second, the user paints the accompanying seal(s) onto any number of additional tags.
By using the first seal as a blindfold, the user can connect his/her vision to that of the accompanying sealed tags.
Using this technique leaves the user immediately blind for the duration, in exchange for gaining an environmental vision from the supplementary tags.]

You note the technique Myatsuu designed. It seems like he designed these around the idea of achieving harmony with one's environment. You're reminded on the book you read by the river and review the technique you learned:

(QM note: I made a mistake when tired, predictably. There were two different Uzumaki techniques to learn, I gave the wrong one. I'll leave it to player's choice on which you stay with-
1) Uzumaki Sealing Method [Used to seal objects into the seal itself]

The Heavenly Seal: Adamantine Bind Technique, an old and pretty complex sealing method. Something tells you a trademark clan technique wasn't easy to obtain. Your mind wanders for a bit as you consider how Myatsuu managed to get this old, weathered book by the Uzumaki.
You look back to review the principles of the technique:

Firstly, it looks like the seal itself is a tattoo. It will take a large amount of space and time to the seal in its entirety, you may even need a second hand with this. Entire chains of seals stretch across the pages in front of you. You're not sure how something like this would fit all on your body.
It looks like even the method of application is particular, as the seal needs to be written in ink mixed with the blood of the sealed person in particular.

If all goes well though, the technique should leave a permanent mark, an invisible tattoo, on your body. When energy is funneled into the tattoo, the user can materialize chains made of pure chakra that seal an opponent's chakra as well as physically bind them. It is incredibly powerful, and the seals comprising the chain can be altered to allow for different effects.

But...you note this means the chains will only remain as long as your chakra is poured into the seals. This technique could be dangerously taxing to you.

You review the technique, eyes narrowed to slits. How could you go about using something like this? You'd need an extraordinary amount of stamina to even-

"So, what do monks read in their spare time?" Yoru asks from over your shoulder.
"You've been re- Oh woah, that's a lot of symbols," he stops mid-speech, perplexed at the writings.

"Do you know how to read seals, Yoru?" You ask off-handedly.
He shakes his head before taking a sip of the glass still in his hand. You think you smell alcohol.

"I've always wished I could. The things those ninja- even you monks- do is....fascinating, honestly."
Another drink
"I can't even produce that...what do you call it...chakra? Yes that's it!" He seems proud at himself for remembering that fact as he continues, "But, seeing the power that some of these ninja casually wield...it makes you wonder, doesn't it? What would the world look like if every normal person had that capability?" He muses, looking at the fire.

"Certainly not any better," you say, leaning back, "look at how corrupted the powerful become."
Your mind flashes back to the masked swordsman with the needle blade. The pleasure he took in killing, in hunting, made him seem....beastial.

"...Maybe, Amon. Maybe this war started because the powerful went unopposed and unchallenged. I can't really say myself. But," He finishes the last of his pungent drink, "I like to think it allowed some opportunity for good."

Yoru stretches, "Ready to turn in, Mr. Shuu?"

"Yoru," you motion with your head to Rin sitting fireside. Her cheeks, while mostly dried, still have a wet streak here and there. You note for the first time that she's actually not that younger than you, maybe about 15.
The firelight makes shadows dance around her face in contorted, tendril-like shapes.

He catches the glance and his face goes a bit stiff.
"Let's talk outside," he responds carefully. He drops the glass on the counter before the two of you head out the door.

"What do you think about what Rin said earlier?" you ask as he follows you out the door, leaving it cracked slightly open. The streets are dark with midnight.

Yoru turns back, a serious expression on his face, "I could tell something was wrong when I looked at the girl, but a Demon?"
He gives you an incredulous look, eyebrows raised high, "Irrespective of whether or not demons are even real, why would Kirigakure put it inside a random girl?"

"Why would she lie?" You respond. Yoru stops and scratches his chin in thought as you continue, "Why would Konoha send a veteran ninja of theirs to save her? It doesn't make sense if she was lying."

"You make a fair point," Yoru shrugs, "I've never heard of any sort of demons before. Though...something has been bothering me," he points at you, "why did your head monk send her with us? She could have just as easily been send with that Tai fellow and her white-haired ninja."

You both consider the situation heavily, but reach the same conclusion.
You have no idea.

As you head back inside, you remember something that had been bothering you from earlier.
"Yoru, you mentioned an 'old man' before. Who were you talking about?"

He looks back to you with and with a dismissive wave, says,
"A old guy I know from Konoha; I take jobs from him here and there. These safehouses come as a benefit of the work, not that I'd usually need them."

He looks up for a moment, thinking.

"What was his name again.....
Ah, yeah, it was [red]Danzo[/red]."
