You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

"...you were saved by WHO!?!?" You gasp in surprise. It had taken innumerable tries, but you had finally gotten through to Woel through your phone, much to your relief, but some of the stuff she was saying was just... too much.

"Buncha Russians, apparently." Woel sighs. "Dunno where the hell they came from or how they ended up all the way out here... but they seem nice enough and they hate Abyssals as much as we do."

"I don't approve of them or trust them. At all." You glower. "Goddamn Reds stabbed us in the back after the War! You gotta know that!"

"Yeah, well, I don't really have much of a choice now, do I?" Woel groans. "Besides, they seem nice enough. Well, most of them anyways. I'm pretty sure Kirov is right behind me glaring daggers into me."

"Well, you DID tell them you're German." You roll your eyes.

"Well, what else was I gonna say? That I'm a frankenstein shipgirl Abyssal hybrid?" Woel retorts.

"Point." You concede.

"A-anyways, they got this pretty nice place out here. Some kinda old oil platform or something. But they were pretty damn insistent I don't tell anybody where it is, as if I have any idea where we are right now."

"Well, if I tell the Captain and Admiral, the might-"

"Hey, these girls here have been nothing but nice and respectful... mostly. I don't wanna reward that by ratting them out. They wanna stay hidden for a reason." Woel sighs. "Just... promise not to ask them to look for me?"

It sounded like Woel was serious about this. No duress or anything like that.

"Fine, I'll keep quiet about it." You sigh.

"Anyways, I gotta go. I'll try to keep ya updated, but signal gets pretty damn spotty around here, especially for this phone. I think that's kinda why these gals chose to hole up here. Later!"

"Later." You mumble as the line clicks.

And that's when the pain suddenly shoots through your body and you remember that you were literally just minutes off of a major battle, where you had tanked quite a few 8 inch shells to the chest. Thankfully your upgraded armor took the brunt of the force, but your internals still took quite a lot of shock.

You place your phone into your locker and slam it shut, quickly shuffling to the repair dock where the rest of the ships were already at. Practically every shipgirl that had taken part in the assault on Atlas was damaged in some way, requiring immediate repair. As such, the pool was absolutely packed with shipgirls.

To your left, you could see Kidd having sidled u up to Graf Spee, who was apparently in the middle of telling some grand tale. Probably one of her past exploits. Just a ways off, Achilles and Ajax were glaring daggers at Graf Spee while Exeter looked a bit intimidated at Graf Spee's mere' presence.

Off to the side, Victorious looked to be on the verge of passing out from stress, with Anna and White Plains sticking close to her out of concern.

The rest of the destroyers were all gathered around Haida, begging her to tell them about how she fought off five Abyssal destroyers by herself, with Haida being a bit reluctant.

Finally, Portland, Dorsetshire, and San Diego were off in their own little trio, apparently hashing out future plans. They were always the type to be at work even during downtime.

You wade over to where Haida is being accosted by your sisters and the Fletchers, who have the poor Canadian destroyer completely surrounded, eager looks on their scratched, bruised, and singed faces. They all looked pretty badly banged up, but nearly to the extent Haida was. With all the oil and blood cleaned off, you could now notice all the hastily healed cuts and bruises all over her body.

"Tell us how you did it, Haida!" Daly whines.

"Yeah! Tell us!" Luce nods in agreement.

"Tell us tell us tell us!" Wren says in excitement.

"Ah, well..." Haida gulps.

"Come on, Haida, they're not going to stop until you tell them." Heerman advises, arms crossed.

"Maybe she just needs a BIIIIIIG hug to feel better!" Johnston giggles as she lunges forward and wraps her arms around Haida, engulfing her head in her frontal armor.

"Mmmph!" Haida wriggles and struggles.

"Johnston, shipgirls need to breathe, remember?" You chuckle as you push your way in.

"Don't worry! I've timed how long it takes!" Johnston responds sweetly before finally letting go of Haida. The poor Canadian, hair now all undone and ruffled, takes in a much needed breath as she splashes back down into the water.

"C'mon, Haida, why don't ya tell them what happened?" You nod to the waiting Fletchers. "They're pretty psyched about it."

"I don't want to encourage that sort of behavior." Haida frowns. "We succeeded, but you know as well as I do that could've turned out very differently."

"Party pooper!" Daly sticks her tongue out.

While you leave Haid to telling your sisters and the Fletchers about her exciting and pulse pounding story about stabbing Abyssal destroyers to death, with her trying to describe her gruesome killing blows as politely as a Canadian could, you scan the repair bay again.

This time, you note that the carriers were gone. Understandable, since they had stayed back and didn't really take any serious damage other than aircraft losses. Instead, you see the submarines and San Francisco, who have apparently taken the carriers' place.

Dace was of course getting all touchy feely with Darter while Flasher seemed content just to bathe quietly. San Fran, of course, was trying to drink herself silly again.

Ah well, you figure you've recovered enough anyways. Most of the pain was pretty much down to dull aches, and all your cuts and bruises and burns have already cleared up. You figure that you can come back later when the repair bay isn't so oppressively crowded. You pull yourself out of the pool and header over to the showers, where you see Anna and White Plains flanking Victorious, who is in the midst of toweling herself off.

You note Anna helping Victorious dry off her hair, only to squeak in surprise when Victorious' hair practically explodes in a cloud of fluff. Maybe that's why she keeps it all tied down into twintails.

"Hey, Vicky!" You grin was you walk up, casually turning on one of the showerheads to rinse off the healing bath water. "I notice the Abyssal planes were never a problem. That must've been some good air support from you!"

"Errmm..." Vicky looks away. "I... I didn't do that much..."

"Well, you didn't have any major screwups." White Plains shrugs.

"White Plains!" Anna tuts. "Vicky did an AMAZING job!"

"I guess..." Vicky sighs.

"'Flagellation?' Where'd you even learn that word?" White Plains raises an eyebrow.

"Shut up. I'm trying to pry an answer outta Vicky here!" You grumble. "All of us fought hard out there today, and I don't want to see any shipgirl selling herself short!"

"Ah, just let her go." You sigh as Vicky shuffles off. You note that White Plains and Anna's faces were also fraught with concern as the British carrier sulked off.

"You know what, I'm pretty sure Dorsie would know what's up." You assure the both of them. "You two get going, I'll go ask her!"

"If you say so." White Plains nods, implicitly trusting you.

"I-I'm coming with you then!" Anna skips to your side. "I wanna know, too!"

"Sure thing, Anna." You grin as you take her hand and pull her along.

Back at the pool, you immediately head over to where the other cruisers are gathered. It was like a goddamned officer meeting, with Portland, Dorsetshire, and San Diego continually mumbling words to each other and passing notes around, even while still in the bath.

There's was something about it that was just really goddamn cute.

"Ah, I see." Dorsetshire seems to sag, as if she was dreading this moment would come. "Portland, San Diego, perhaps we should continue this a a future juncture."

"All right." Portland nods and she and San Diego head off to apparently bother San Fran, no doubt to discourage her blatant drinking again.

"Ah, well... where do I start?" Dorsetshire sighs and leans back against the edge of the pool. "When the Abyssal war started, Victorious was one of the first Royal Navy ships to, how they term it, 'come back.'"

"Uh huh..." You nod, trying to listen in more.

"The first year was tough." Dorsetshire frowns, as if she was dredging up memories she'd rather prefer to keep buried. "Not enough ships, not enough shipgirls, endless waves of Abyssals. It was an endless gauntlet."

"That sounds horrible!" Anna gasps.

"It was, in many ways." Dorsetshire nods. "You should have seen Victorious in her prime. As resolute as Churchill, as regal as the Queen. For the longest time, she and Prince were the lone bulwark between Britain and the Abyssals."

"Prince? As in THE Prince of Wales?" Anna gasps again.

"The one and the same." Dorsetshire give a slight smile. "They were practically sister ships, holding the line. Victorious would keep the skies clear while Prince swept the oceans."

"I'm feeling the 'but' coming..." You predict.

"...but the stress was too much." Dorsetshire shakes her head. "There was one mission where they had to intercept an Abyssal raiding party. The weather was already bad that day. Low visibility and high winds. Prince wanted to cancel the mission, wait until the Abyssals got closer to shore so the RAF could handle them. But Victorious assured her that she could keep things covered."

"Oh no..." Anna gasped.

"Victorious spread her squadrons out just tad too wide, I'm afraid." Dorsetshire bites her lip. "An Abyssal bomber squadron managed to slip through cracks and Prince was their primary target."

"What... what happened." You're almost afraid of the answer.

"Prince managed to limp back to port, but Victorious was never the same after that. She could never approach her out of guilt." Dorsetshire explained. "And that's when the other carriers began showing up. Ark Royal, Courageous, and others. When Victorious' star began to falter, they rose up to take her place, and I think that just made things worse for her."

"And why'd she end up all the way out here?" You raise an eyebrow.

"I suggested it, actually." The British cruiser reveals. "I was to be transferred to the Falklands to secure the islands, but since the Abyssals were never nearly as active in the south, I thought it would be a good chance for Victorious to find her footing again."

"It doesn't seem like it's working, though." You point out.

"Just give it time." Dorsetshire sighs. "I'm sure she'll come around."

"All right, we'll trust your judgment on this." You sigh, deferring to Dorsetshire's more reserved approach.

"Mmmmm, I still feel kinda bad for her..." Anna mumbles. "I mean, if she was as famous as you said she was, and now she's all the way down here basically hiding..."

"I think the break is good for her, in a way." Dorsetshire nods. "She's known nothing but endless stress ever since she came back, and, well, I don't think she knows how to feel anything else, which contributes to her current condition."

"I guess." You nod in agreement. "Thanks for telling us, Dorsie."

"I felt you had the right to know, after all you've done for us." Dorsetshire finally smiles. "Taking out Atlas takes a massive load off of our backs, and- oh dear, how much time as passed?"

Sure enough, now that Dorsie had pointed it out, the repair dock was practically abandoned. Looks like everybody got in their repairs for the day.

"Well, I suppose that's our cue to exit as well." Dorsetshire stands up and grabs her towel. "Until next time."

"Hnnnnn, what do we do now?" Anna asks.

"Ehehehe." You grin devilishly. "How about a bath with just the two of us?"

"Well, it does look like you need a little more time to repair!" Anna nods as she pokes a rather large bruise on your side that hadn't completely gone away.

"Not what I meant, Anna." You roll your eyes.

"Huh?" Anna blinks curiously before her antenna shoots straight up. "Oh... OH!"

You just chuckle as you slide back into the bath, the warm waters instantly going back to work on your damaged parts. Anna follows shortly, dropping in next to you.

"That was a real intense battle, huh?" Anna smiles. "Almost as intense as Midway, even!"

"Yeah, maybe a bit." You nod in agreement.

You wrap an arm around Anna's bare shoulders and pull her a bit closer to you. Casually, of course. You didn't want to be too pushy. Anna's antenna twitches wildly, but she doesn't make any objections.

"This is pretty nice, isn't it?" You say happily as you watch the thin wisps of steam rise from the bath waters.

"Mhm!" Anna nods wordlessly as she snuggles her head against your shoulder. "I'm just glad you're okay, Hoel!"

"Well, I'm always fine!" You grin.

"You know... I really worry about you sometimes." Anna mumbles. "Especially on a mission like the last one, where I couldn't see or hear you because of the jamming and radio silence..."

"Hey, it's okay." You assure her and kiss Anna on the forehead. "You know me, I'll always find a way to come back!"

"Y-you better!" Anna giggles as she pokes you in your bruised side.

"Boy, you two sure look to be having a lot of fun."

The two of your freeze like deer in the headlights, and ever so slightly, you turn your head to see Eldridge sitting casually in the bath, barely a few meters away with the most smug and amused look on her face.

"Got room for one more~?" She giggles sweetly at your expense.

"Always looking to add to the squadron!" You grin as you open up your free arm, motioning for Eldridge to join you.

"Sorry, but I ain't like the subs!" Eldridge chuckles as she climbs out of the pool. "I think I"ll just let you two have your privacy!"

And with that the gifted destroyer escort makes her escape, apparently impervious to your charms.

Aw well, at least now you and Anna could-

And that's with Anna's antenna twitches wildly and starts sparking a bit, a clear sign that somebody was trying to radio her.

"Ignore it Annaaaaaa." You whine as you wrap your arms around her greedily.

"B-but I can't!" Anna whimpers. "It's from the Captain!"

"...oh." You sigh as you slink down into the water, submerging your head up to your nose and making bubbles in the water as you do an underwater pout. "I guess you can put it through, then."

"S-sorry, Hoel!" Anna says apologetically as she kisses you on the forehead too in an effort to make up for the inconvenience. It works. "H-hello? Yes, I'm, with Hoel actually- oh, you want her to come, too?"

Well, what the hell does this mean?

Anna's antenna then droops as the connection is cut.

"Um, the Captain wants to see you, too!" Anna reiterates as she clambers out of the pool. "I guess he already has our next deployment figured out?"

"Huh, wonder why he wants to drag me along, too." You frown.

"You're an important part of the squadron, of course!" Anna says cheerfully. "I guess the Captain appreciates your input on things!"

"Most of the things I suggest are to just blow everything." You point out.

"And it's worked so far!" Anna giggles.

She sort of has a point there.

The two of you make your way over to the briefing room, where you see Portland, Dorsetshire, San Diego, and surprisingly, Graf Spee all present.

"Ah, Hoel, good that you can make it." The Captain nods as he turns to the map. "I know it's rather early in the morning and you all want to get some rest, but I feel it's important to inform you of our next deployment."

And that's when you realize the shape on the map was extremely familiar. A shape that's been burned into your memory since the day you were launched.

Japan.

She's a full blown Base Princess. However, thankfully, she hasn't had time to "mature" into a terror like the Midway Princess was.

And it's always been a long standing suspicion among scientists and analysts that Abyssals so closely resemble existing shipgirls due to their inherent nature in attempting to copy anything that proves difficult to defeat.
