Go right, not sure what we are looking for, maybe something that would fit on the pedestal?
>>
>>222874
Going right leads you to the small clearing with the stump in the center. You reply to Olivia,
>"Not sure what we're looking for, maybe something that would fit on the pedestal?"
The sound gets a noticeable amount louder.
"Hm, Maybe. Could be that whatever was on that pedestal could be the mana source."
The sound gets louder again.
"Why is it louder now?" She sighs, "This is gonna drive me crazy."

Contemplate what kind of object may have fit in the indent. It was a jewelry box, so maybe a ring, gem, mama crystal, pearl, ball, etc...
Go back to the shed and look for anything that may have fit.

You whip out a deerstalker and pipe,
>"I believe I may have an idea."
>"This noise, it seems to approach us whenever we learn something about its source. or make a claim based on evidence."
>"I believe we must learn the nature of the mana source before we are ever to observe it in person."
You snap out of your haze to find Olivia staring at you, tears in eyes, stifling a humongous grin.
You find on your head Aqua's bra, and Storm in your mouth.
Embarrassed, you put things away, and walk through the path. It takes you a few tries, first passing through seemingly random locations, before you reach the shack and flower garden.
Once their, you look through the shack once more, for anything that could fit the indentation in the jewelry box. You don't find anything physical, but Olivia calls out.
"Hey, come check this out, you think this could be what was in it?"
She shows you the painting, and points to something. Well, two somethings really.
"Two halves of a locket, they're each wearing one in this painting!"
>"So is that Esberg, then?"
She flips the painting over, and shows you a small marking on the back, "Esberg and Dorris Henderson."
>"Good enough for me."

You return to find Kazuma and Esberg engaged in a ferocious match of chess. Clearly, a long and arduous battle of wits, every move thought about in its entirety.
Kazuma reaches for his queen, and moves it diagonally, capturing a knight threatening the king. A brilliant play by all measur--
"Checkmate," says Esberg.
"Nine moves, a personal record of mine."
Kazuma scratches his head in shame.
"Thank you for playing, young man. Ah, welcome back. Do you bring news of the strange sounds? They've gotten a bit louder while you were away."

>"Actually, we were hoping to ask you a couple more questions, if that's alright."
"Fine by me, ask away"

>What do you ask?
>>
>>223075
Do you know about a secret panel on your house with a jewlery box behind it? (If so, do you know what went on the pedestal?) Do you have a locket that had 2 halves?
>>
>>223229
"I do. The question is how do you?
That pedestal held the locket that we cherished. She was buried with her half, I kept the other half in that box, until somewhat recently, that is. About a month ago, I took that half of the locket and buried it over her grave in the woods."
>>
>>223246
I think the music has something to do with that locket, when we went in the woods, we were led in circles by also me sort of magic until we came to a shed with the location of the box on a map and a picture of you and your wife. You should dig up your half and put it back in the box.
>>
>>223298
anon is most likely correct
>>
>>223298
During your exposition, the sound becomes steadily louder.
"I see. You said you were led to a shed, was there a flowerbed?"
>"Yes."

The four of you escape to the woods and enter, finding yourself being led by Esberg. He finds his way to the shed despite any magical effects lingering over the wood,
Oddly enough, the sound no longer has the strange effect of always sounding the same distance away. It gets louder as you approach the shed. It still doesn't seem to have a definable source, however.

"I buried it over here, in the bed."
"Huh, that's weird," says Kazuma, "I was thinking that the two locket halves, which you both cared about very much, when buried closely, formed a sort of connection, and mana started flowing between them. Over time, it would become a powerful mana source, and cause some disruption in the local area. But if that were the case, we'd see something, and the mana would be palpable."

As he's talking, the sound gets louder and louder, until when he stops, and a door appears in the middle of the four of you. You cautiously place your hand on its handle, and the surrounding area begins to crack and shatter around you.

When it's all said and done, no door remains, and the old scene that had surrounded you was gone.
Where the flowerbed once was, there is now a large tree. The tree is mostly normal, but a short way up the trunk, it has grown into a caged housing. Within the housing, the two halves of the locket are held closely together. The mana flowing around the area really is practically palpable, and in fact visible at the very heart of the tree. Around you are pixies, drunk from the mana, engaged in singing, dancing, playing instruments, arguing, arm wrestling, and a few engaged in outright fucking. The area is well lit, in a combination from the light of the pixies, the lightning bugs, and some luminescent plant growth on the forest floor.
"Called it," says Kazuma.

"Well, that explains the sound," says Olivia, "But what about this?"
She points to a brass pipe, following its length, you see that it's connected to the tree, and that it dips below the ground at its base.

"I don't know. I think I'll leave it. It feels like a part of Dorris is living on in this little grove.

You do that, the new 30,000e in tow, split three ways.
The three of you return to the guild hall to turn in the quest. You and Olivia level up, and you all three retire to the party house.

"Welcome back." Says Darkness. She is wearing her gown that reveals her figure, a curvy body with large breasts, wide hips, and a small but noticeable thigh gap, yet you can't make out any details of her flesh beneath the crimsoned, double-weaved, yellow silk. She is returning from the bath, you can tell, from her mildly damp, recently towel dried hair, and the smell of soaps that fills the rapidly cooling hall.
"Megumin and Aqua have already turned to their rooms for the night, but if you wish to eat, I have left some salads and cold-served ham for you on the table."
You thank her, and she leaves, presumably to go to bed.

You all three eat, and Olivia heads to the bath, leaving you alone with Kazuma.

"See you tomorrow then."

You head to the bedroom, and open up the door.
Olivia's sitting on the bed reading a note, looking a mixture of confused and worried.

>"What's that?"
"I found it on the floor in here, our names were written on the front, and it was sealed with wax."
>"Weird, what does it say?

You wake up to an eerily quiet house. Olivia is still asleep next to you, and her breathing is the only noise you can hear. You wager it's about four or five in the morning.
You're not used to waking up this early, and you're a bit groggy, but you've always had trouble going back to sleep once you've woken up.

You slowly get up as to not disturb Olivia, and head to the bathroom. It then occurs to you that you don't actually know where the bathroom is. You check the door in your room, but it's just a linen closet.

You leave, and start trying doors. First, the door directly across the hall from you. You slowly open it, and inside you see a sleeping Megumin.
"E...xplosion..."
Not the bathroom. Adorable and creepy, but not the bathroom.
Next door over, you find Aqua in her pajamas. She's moving dolls around and talking to them, "Oh hello Kazuma, good morning!"
In a deeper voice, "Oh hello Aqua, good to see you. Oh, and good morning Darkness!"
In a breathy voice, "Good morning, Kazuma, good morning Aqu--"
She sees you, and her expression changes. She jumbles around, shoves the dolls out of the way, and is sitting on the table nervously laughing in a movement so quick you'd have hardly thought it happened.
>"Uh, bathroom?"
"Second door to the left out the stairwell!"
>"Thanks."
You back out slowly and close the door behind you.
In the bathroom, you take care of your morning routine, and head downstairs.

See if there is breakfast.
If there isn't, but there is food, make some for everyone.
If not, ask the folks if they want to grab something to eat outside.
>>
>>225379
There is food!
Since it's early and you've only seen one other person awake, you decide to make some bread kneads, with tomato and cheese, that can be served cold, to avoid the problem of no microwave.
You get some flour, water and salt, a little milk, and an egg, and whip together a dough. You don't actually want it to rise, so you avoid putting more than a sprinkle of yeast in with it. You knead the dough, and roll it into large flat circles that will bake and warm evenly. You sprinkle flower across your pan, slap two circles of dough on it, toss it in the oven, light the wood with a fireball, and wait. After about 20 minutes of being in the low temperature oven, you pull the pan out, and cut each circle into thirds.
Each cut gets about half a tomato in slices (they had Roma), and a fair covering of grated cheese, before you have an idea.
You look around the cabinets for a few minutes until you find them; bananas.
Luckily, they're all perfectly ripe. One looks darker yellow than the others, but only about two thirds of the way up. Could be that its darker portion had been leaning out of the cabinet at one point, and gotten a bit more light than the others.
You take the bananas, and add about ten coins to each knead. You then hold a fireball over each to let the cheese melt, and weld the fruits together.
Most people gag at the idea of bananas and tomatoes together, but it's a trick you proudly keep up your sleeve, because it's actually fucking delicious.

You fold over one side of the kneads, and place them onto plates, lay a mint leaf on each, then they go into the ice box, so people can grab them when they wake up.

Then, you go back up the stairs and knock on Aqua's door.
"Come in!"
>"I don't know if you could smell it, but I just made some breakfast, do you want some?"
It seems that the doors are smell proof, because soon after you open the door, she quickly starts sniffing the air, and walking out of her room.
"If that's what I'm smelling, then yes!"

She follows the smell into the kitchen, and looks at the dish.

"What is it?"
>"A knead."
"And that is,"
>"It's like an omelette, but with bread instead of egg."
"An omelette?"
It occurs to you that she as a goddess of water, inferring from her name anyway, probably wasn't that knowledgeable about food, and always ate ambrosia or some shit.
>"You take some eggs, and whip them, then pour them into a pan. They eventually make a sort of solid thing that you can put stuff inside of."
"Oh wow, you actually know a lot about cooking, don't you? That's great, nobody here can do it."
You thank her, she eats the knead, exclaims about its deliciousness, scrunches up her nose when you tell her what you made it with, but keeps eating it anyway.
You eat yours, and although it's not your best work, it's pretty good.

"I didn't live in heaven. To tell you the truth, heaven kind of sucks. It's boring, you don't have a body, you can't control your own environment. Yeah, the real thing is total crap compared to what most people want to think it is. I lived in a place called 'The Dominion.' Usually, humans can't stay there very long, but it is pretty nice. You can only imagine what fire ants the size of dogs could do to you.
>>
>>227373
Go prepare.
Maybe we can buy some protective clothing? Potions? Dull-Pain Potions maybe?
>>
>>227373
ask around for some more electric and water spells, then go buy some wizard robes or something and put in a custom order at a clothes/robe shop for an American flag (draw it out for them) to wear as a cape so any otherworlders recognize us
>>
>>227587
>>227999
You ask around the guild, but nobody seems to want to teach you anything higher than beginner level, and it's mostly fireballs.
It looks like you'll have to buy scrolls, or study technique to learn better ones.

You hit up a tailor, to see what they have clothes wise.
They don't have any enchanted wear, but they tell you about a wizard's shop across the way that can enchant clothing, however the enchantments have a bit of a bad reputation around town for being overpriced.
You ask about custom embroidery for capes and the like, and they can take your measurements. You draw out the american flag for them, thirteen stripes and fifty stars in all, and you point out the red, white, and blue areas.
They tell you they can have it made by Thursday, and that it would cost 10,000 eris.

You head back to the guild hall, somewhat more prepared for the quests, and you approach Megumin and Kazuma with these questions.

"The best place to get enchanted equipment is by finding already enchanted equipment. Enchanting things relevant to your level nowadays is always way too expensive."

Kazuma answer your question to him, "One of Darkness's friends, Chris. Don't know how to find her, but Darkness would be your best bet there."
>>
>>228865
>>228865
Eh, let's get on with this fire ant genocide then.

Megumin is the only one who seems all that interested out of the Kazuma party. Darkness is still nowhere to be found.

With that, you three set out to the northeast, in a similar direction to the bearcow quest. In fact, you reach the same valley, but the marker is beyond the small forest that you were in the previous day.

It takes you about fifteen minutes of walking further into the valley, before you spot your first giant fire ant, walking around in the open field.

Megumin's HP is still at 9.
Olivia uses lesser heal on Megumin, bringing her back to full at 12.
However, she is unable to heal herself afterward. Must be on a cooldown. It also takes about 50 mana to cast.
She is unable to heal for about 4 minutes (4 turns).
Another four minutes, and the ant is brought up to 7 HP.
You point to the cave and tell Megumin to do her thing.
She spouts some chuuni bullshit, and then unleashes a massive explosion upon the small cave.
She also falls over, immobile. The explosion evidently drained her stamina and mana completely.

Looting the two dead ants gives you some more chitin, another mandible, and a phial of fire ant venom.
Don't ask why it was already in a phial, we're going by skyrim logic here.

You pick up Megumin, and Olivia picks up the still unconscious ant, and you head back to the guild hall.

You see Kazuma, Darkness, and Aqua at a table, deliberating over a couple quest papers. They wave at you, and you get looks from the surrounding adventurers.

You wave off Darkness, who is easily hefting both Megumin and Antilles.
>"Careful not to let him bite you, it hurts like hell!"

The remaining four of you head off towards the excavation site.
You walk west on the mostly visible road for about an hour and a half before you see signs of scaffolding among the sand.
Up about two kilometers from the buildings in construction, you see dunes rising.
The marker indicates the quest to be located well within the bounding sands.
Furthering your pursuit of adventure, you push ahead into the shifting desert.

Another half hour of walking takes you to a small outpost of standing covers. A few archaeologists have moved a very large stone slab underneath one, and are inspecting it closely.

Furthermore, you can see an opening in a larger dune. Sticks with cloth tied around them mark around it, perhaps as a means of taping it off to curious passerby.

Inspecting the archaeologist leads you to a firm conclusion that he is not American.

He takes you under the covering.
The door is huge, and made out of intricately chiseled stone. It depicts machinations, hundreds of interlocked gears, and concentric circles.
The centerpiece of the door is a depiction of a face. At first it appears normal, but observing it closer reveals it to also be crafted of thousands of incredibly small gears.

Before moving forward, you take the ball out of its socket.
The exit doors close, and the entrance reopens, letting Kazuma inside.
You beckon him over, then re-place the ball.
The doors open, the entrances close, and the four of you proceed into the next area.
The next area is symmetrical. There is a long curved hallway, that end with a door barred shut.
Along the way are two openings, that lead to two platforms in an ornate domed chamber. The platform closer to where you entered has a metal ball, the one on the far end has a socket.
You see Aqua standing on one of the two platforms on her side. You and Olivia stand in one, and Kazuma in the other. In the center is a horizontal metal rod, with cups in both ends roughly the size of the metal balls.
Aqua's platform also has a lever.

>>
>>235026
Perhaps I should clarify what's happening,

This is what the area looks like from (roughly) your perspective.
I didn't draw any characters, but imagine Aqua standing on that far platform, and you'll basically see what I intended.
>>
>>235078
Actually here's a correction.
>>
>>235078
Ooh okay for some reason I imagined a walkable beam.
Anyway, I guess we could try getting the ball from one end into one of those spoons, then using the lever until it's reachable by the socket person on the opposite end
>>
>>235078
Then it's:
>socket with Aqua
>ball with Kazuma
We need to get Kazuma's ball into Aqua's hole.
Take the moment to say that out loud, then try to use the lever to move the middle platform into the right position.
>>

Aqua grabs her metal ball from its current socket.
Immediately after doing so, doors close behind all four of the platforms. You and Olivia are standing on one of the platforms with an empty socket, so Aqua places the ball in the spoon, and hits the lever.
It rotates clockwise 90 degrees, so the ball is at the empty platform (which has an empty socket). Nobody can do anything with it right then, so she hits the lever again.
The bar rotates another 90 degrees, and you can grab it. You place it in the socket at your platform, and nothing happens.

Okay I'm going to assume we need both balls in the front sockets to open.

>>235267
You get both balls into a back socket, and the doors open again.
>>
>>235287
My guess: we need both balls at the back sockets. One of the sockets doesn't have anyone manning it so I guess we'd need two people there for this to work, because otherwise taking the balls from the back sockets basically blocks anyone from going to operate there.

We'll backtrack until we have two people on each side, one on each socket manning.
Then remove the balls from the front sockets and onto the back sockets (near the closed doors).
>>
>>235321
Two people on one one of the sides.*
>>
You backtrack and with some fumbling get Kazuma on the same side as Aqua.
Now with four people each on their own platform, you feel confident that you can complete the task.

To avoid complication,
simply write the total set of moves you intend to make. Remember that the bar turns clockwise.
For example,
>Kazuma places ball on spoon
>Aqua hits lever twice
>Aqua takes ball
>>
>>235706
>>235706

Olivia places ball on empty end
Turn lever (x6 I think, assuming it has 8 states) until the ball faces You
Aqua should have the empty end now, she places her ball there
Turn lever (x2) until her ball faces Kazuma

You and Kazuma place the ball on the sockets
>>
>>235720
You hear the sound of cogs turning as the doors behind all four of you open, and you hear the sound of metal sliding as the bars retract from the previously unopenable doors.

">>(you), were you a gamer?" Asks Kazuma.

>"I dabbled. This feels awfully reminiscent of something like Zelda doesn't it?"

"No doubt. And, these puzzles are going to get harder, but I played a lot of games,"
"A _lot_ of games," says Aqua, snickering. Kazuma rolls his eyes.
"Either way, if we're going to be separated much, I don't know if I can help you, but if there's any other cases like this, where we're solving puzzles collaboratively, just ask for help."

You nod, thank him, and exit the chamber, walking up the hall and curved stairs to the now unblocked door.
You haven't had to face any dungeon monsters yet, but your gamer's intuition tells you that you may soon.

>"I've got a feeling we may fight something up ahead."
"I feel that too. You think it's mummies or some shit?"
>"I wouldn't put it past this place."
"Their long, gross ass rotting fingers, I really hope it's not mummies." She tries to shake off the thought, and draws her bow as you open the door.
Lo and behold, you don't end up seeing any enemies, at least not where you are. You do hear clanking and screaming, coming from below you and to your left, however.

This room is roughly the same size as the previous, but is almond shaped, with carved out halls in the walls, two on the left, and one on the right that you stand in. In the center, extending from the lower of the two halls on the left, there is a walkway leading to a circular platform. Extending up from the platform is a rod, with handles on the level of the platform, boasting a stone walkway that is currently turned facing parallel to your hall.
There is a gap in the railing on both sides of the chamber on the upper level, and down your hall, you see a chest, on your side of a barred barricade. On the other side of the barricade is a locked door and a stairwell that leads down.
On the lower of the two halls on the left, you see Kazuma fending off two mummies, and you stifle laughter. Olivia doesn't stifle hers.
Aqua is curled up clutching her head, muttering.
"Come on Aqua! It's not a--" He dodges an attack, "Big deal! Don't you have a thing for purging undead?"
"O-one of them... TOUCHED me Kazuma!"
"Oh, aint that a shame, your virgin goddess hands soiled by the--" He dodges another, "Filthy suffering souls!"
"You guys need help down there?" asks Olivia.
"I'd app--" Yet another, "--reciate it, yes!" As he says that, he drives his sword into the closest mummy, sending it back on its ass. Even though it doesn't have lungs, it looks winded.

Oddly enough, even though the sand of its body is constantly moving, it doesn't feel abrasive. You can tell that it's in motion, but it feels more like a liquid than sand.
You're able to yank your hand away. There's no residual sand on your wrist at all, which is fantastic since it's a huge pet peeve of yours.

It's not the heat on the point of contact with electric spells that deals the damage, it's the amperage.
Although electricity hurts more when it arcs, such as holding the graphite of a pencil while it's charged, versus holding the wood of the pencil while it's charged (the wood hurts worse), the sheer number of granules of sand and the distance between them due to the high aeration would cause any arcs that would go through to dissipate in voltage very quickly, essentially dealing less damage than if the sand were stationary.
