Derrick makes a swipe at your midsection, forcing you to jump back. But that's all the ground he gains, as you put your weight onto your front foot and lunge at him.

About an hour ago, Rhea helped you split one of the practice swords down the middle. The result was a sword that was much lighter, and much better suited to your fighting style. You figured that if you were going to be using a Mageblade, which has no weight, then it would be smarter to train with a lighter weapon.

The difference shows.

Derrick swipes your lunge to the side and pulls back for an overhand slash. He does this a lot, you can sometimes see it coming, but he always does it when you're not in a position to attack. So you step to the side...

The right side. Last time you stepped to the left and that didn't end well, so this time you'll try it the other way.

Like he did last time, Derrick swings his sword back up at you from the ground. You put your own sword out to deflect it, but he shifts his footing and changes his angle.

You step back to try and get out of the way, but Derrick is aiming for your back foot... and he gets it. He hits it hard, knocking it out from under you and sending you to the ground.

"Ow" You say.
"Sorry... I might've put a little too much into that" Derrick says as he offers you his hand. "Are you alright?"
"Yeah, probably" You say, as you accept his hand and get back to your feet.

On your feet, you give your leg a test. It hurts, but it shouldn't slow you down.

Looking around, you see that the sun has gone down. The courtyard is now lit by a series of lamps which look like they're powered by Locke's generator.

"You good to keep going?" He asks.

"Yeah, one more round" You say.

Derrick smiles and nods. "Alright" He says. "I have to admit, you make an interesting opponent"
"I do?" You ask.
"You learn fast" He says, as he steps back and gets into position. "Nothing works twice. I try something that worked last time, and you're ready for it"

"I don't like getting hit" You say.
He chuckles. "Well, that's as good a motivation as any" He says, as he takes his stance. "Ready?"

You get into your own stance, which is one that Meyu's friend Zaine recommended. It's for fighting with lighter blades.

You nod, and Derrick steps forward.

The two of you clash blades several times. You come very close to hitting him a couple of times, but for every close call, you get nailed twice.

"Ow" You say, as you find yourself on the ground again.
"Okay, now I think we should call it quits" Derrick says. "It's getting pretty late"

"Hellooooo!" Ilica says. You turn to see her entering the courtyard very enthusiastically.

"Welcome back" Derrick says. "Did you have fun?"
Ilica giggles and nods.

"Anything interesting happen after I left?" You ask.

Ilica squeals, and starts gushing. "Daniella let me feed the little baby, and little Hella said she loves me, and-"

She continues, getting more and more incoherent as she goes. Until she finally stops to take a breath, and Derrick interrupts.

"So you had fun" He says again.
Ilica nods excitedly.

"Think you'll go back there?" He asks
Ilica nods excitedly... again. "Vance says that I could make a good hunter... so I might look into that" She says.
"Really?" Derrick asks. "Never saw you as the type"
"Me neither" Ilica says. "But they're always looking for people whose mastery weapons are ranged, so... yeah"

"Cool" You say. "Where did Tian and Ariadne go?"
"They decided to stay there for the night. I considered it, but my bed here is pertty comfy. So I-" Ilica stops and sniffs the air. "You guys stink, by the way"

Derrick lifts an arm and smells, frowning as he does. "I guess we've been working up a sweat..." He says.

The three of you stand in silence for a moment...

"Race you!" you say, as you take off.
"Yuu! Wait!" Derrick says. He yells something else, but you're too far away to hear.

You run inside and take a left down the hall.

Then a right...

Then another left, and then you run straight for a while.

...

Wait... where were you going?

You stop running and look around. You don't recognize this place... and come to think of it, you don't think you even know where the bathrooms were in the first place.

Maybe that's what Derrick was trying to say.

Alright...don't panic. You can find this place.

You might not win that race, but hopefully you'll still be able to find the baths.

So... using common sense, a room like the baths would probably be on the ground floor.

...

Probably.

So you start checking around, looking into each room as you pass them.

There are a few offices, a storage room or two, lots of rooms with beds in them... but no baths.

Eventually you come to a different room. It's not the baths, but it stands out.

It looks like a bigger version of Kieve's place back in Contique, with big wooden shelves filled with rows and rows of books.

You shrug and keep going, you'll be able to look around in here later. You continue down the hallway.

You keep checking each room in turn. A few of them have soldiers inside, who wave to you as you go by. But after a few rooms, the rest are empty.

When you're past the bedrooms, you think maybe you should've asked those soldiers where the baths were...

Ah, nevermind. You can find it on your own.

A couple doors later, you come across one that looks like the change rooms for the baths back at the guild in Contique. So you cautiously step inside, and make your way to the door further in.

It's pretty hot in here... you must have the right place.

"Uhhh-Ahhhhh!" Ilica screams. "Oh, it's Yuu... I see you found the change room..."

You turn to see Ilica, holding up a towel to cover herself.

"I'm in the wrong room, aren't I?" You ask.
"You are" Ilica says. "In the future, it's written on the door"
"It is?" You ask, as you step back out to look at the door. There's writing on it, but it's not the same. "Is this some other language?"

Ilica comes over to you, having wrapped the towel around herself while you weren't looking. "Oh, that's just cursive" She says.
You jump back and away from the door. "It's cursed?!?"
"Cursive" Ilica says. "It's just a different way of writing the letters"

You frown. "Man... I just finished learning how to read, and now there's a whole 'nother way?"
"It's not that different... but I can see how you could be confused" Ilica says. "Anyway, you can ask Emi about that stuff later. For now, the men's room is the next door over"

"Oh. Thanks!" You say.
"Don't mention it" She says. "I'll see you in the baths"

"You will..." You say. "Hang on. Why are you so worried if I see you nakd if you're just going to be naked in the baths?"
"Go get changed, Yuu" Ilica says, as she closes the door.

Well that didn't answer your question... Ah, whatever.

You head over to the next door, which also has writing on it, and walk in.

"Oh, hey Yuu" Derrick says. "I see you found the place"
"Yeah, but I lost the race" You say.
"That's okay. You'll get it next time" He says.

You shrug, and strip off your shirt. Your hat and your cloak is still in the courtyard, so you'll have to remember to grab those before you go to bed.

Or you could just leave them there. You don't think anyone will steal them.

"Tired?" Derrick asks.
"A little" You say. "Why?"
"You seem sluggish" He says.

"Well... I did spend most of the day getting my butt kicked" You say.
Derrick chuckles. "That's true" He says. "But you held your own pretty well. I think the commander will be happy to hear about that"

"Think I'm ready?" You ask.
"Not just yet..." He says. "But you could probably still make it through if we went to the prison now. You would just have to make up for your lack of skill with that pure tenacity that you've been getting by with so far"

"What is tenacity anyway?" You ask
"It's... determination, strength, the ability to hold on" He says. "It's a good quality to have"

You nod, and start trying to work off your belt as Derrick pats your back. "But I'll see you inside" He says. "Watch when you come in. It sounds pretty crowded in there..."

"Kay" You say.

When you're fully undressed, you grab a towel and wrap it around your waist, stow your things in a cubby, and head into the baths.

Wow, Derrick was right. This place is crowded.

Altea's knights are still here, along with Altea herself. You see Derrick, Ilica, and Emi, as well as Meyu, Zaine, Gerrard, and Madelaine.

While you decide, Emi's head perks up and she turns around. "Oh, Yuu" Emi says. "Are you coming in?"
"Yes" You say.
"Anytime soon?" Emi asks. "If you're looking for a spot, I could move over"

You smile, and step back. "Don't worry about it"
"What are you..."

You start running, and leap over Emi's head before curling up and hitting the water. It takes a moment to right yourself and get your head back up over the water so you can look around. Everyone got splashed by that.

You smile.

"Did you really have to do that?" Ilica asks.
"No" You say.

"Can I drown him?" Madelaine asks.

Uh-oh... you might be in trouble.

You saunter over to Altea, and sit on the bench beside her.

"Why the long face?" She asks.
"I'm in trouble, aren't I?" You ask.
"No" She says. "Why would you be in trouble? That was a pretty good splash"
"Oh..." You say. "So if I'm not in trouble, why do you look mad?"

"I looked mad?" She asks. "Lulu, do I look mad?"
"Yes commander" Lulu says. "There is a certain disappointed quality to your expression right now"
"I see" Altea says. "I've been trying to work on that..."
"So if you're not mad, why did you call me over?" You ask.

Altea folds her hands in her lap, trying her best to look pleasant. It works... kinda. "How are you finding Locke so far, Yuu?" She asks.
"It's not so bad" You say. "Nicer than Bell's Run"

"That doesn't take much" Pip says. "The only way to make the place worse than Bell's Run would be to like... set it on fire... or something"

"I guess you haven't seen much of the town" Altea says.
"Not really, other than the path between here and the Hunter's Guild" You say. "I did kind of jump right into training"

"You did" She says. "How would you feel about taking tomorrow off? I have some business with Derrick and my knights that will take most of the day. If you want to continue training, then my business can wait. But you look like you could use a day off"

"Sounds good" You say. "Maybe I can get to the guild and get some mageblade pointers from Tian..."

"Alright" Altea says. "I'll let Derrick and the girls know"

"How did Derrick become your squire anyway?" You ask.

Altea opens her mouth to answer, but then something catches her eye. She looks at it for a second, and then rolls her eyes.

"His mother was a friend of mine" She says. "He was a scrawny little boy, so she sent him to me so I could do what I do best"
"Who was his mom?" You ask.
"Just a friend" She says. "A dragon, like myself"

"But we're in a bath" You say. "I thought the whole point of a bath was to get clean"

Altea looks confused for a moment, and then starts laughing.

"Dirt in a bath" Altea says with a sigh. "That's rich"

The water in front of you starts to shimmer and swirl. "You seem to be in better spirits now, Altea" The pool in front of you says.

You try to scramble away from it, but Altea puts a hand on your shoulder.

"It's alright Yuu" Altea says. "And Jade, you know it's not nice to scare the newcomers"

"Sorryyyy" The pool says, as it slowly takes shape. You notice that the spot in front of you is greener than everywhere else. "In my defense, he did sit in me..."

"I did?" You ask.
"You were there the whole time?" Altea asks. "You know you have to warn people about these things"

The liquid takes the approximate form of a woman... a green, seethrough woman... "But talking and keeping my shape gets so hard in the warm water" She says. "Much easier just to dissolve"

Altea sighs. "Yuu, this is Jade. She's our healer" She says.

You look down and shrug. "I like the scar" You say.
"Well then it's a good thing I coul-blblblbl..." Jade says, as her form completely dissolves, and her words become bubbles.

You decide to head to the courtyard to grab your hat and cloak. You think you have this place figured out, so the courtyard will be... this way. Probably.

After walking for a while, you do find the courtyard. It feels good to finally start learning your way around. First back to the castle from the guild, and now out to the courtyard.

Maybe Derrick was right about you being a fast learner...

Stepping out into the courtyard, you spot 2 things: the spot on the ground where you left your hat and cloak, and a familiar head of red hair.

"Hello" You say.
"What?" Madelaine asks, looking surprised. She has the two halves of the sword you split to make it lighter in her hands "Oh, hey"

You walk over to where your stuff is. "What brings you out here?" You ask.
"I like the cool air after a warm bath" She says. Madelaine is being oddly nice to you. Normally she'd've insulted you by now... "How about you?"

You pick up your cloak and hat. "I forgot these" You say.
"Oh..." She says. "So I... I wanted to apologize... for being so mean"
"Okay" you say.

"Really?" She asks. "That's it?"
"Yeah" You say. "It's not like I have any reason to hold a grudge, do I?"
"I guess not" She says.

"Is that all?" You ask.

You scramble to mount a defense at her sudden advance.

Stepping away from a pair of quick jabs, you try to counter only to find your sword hitting a third jab that you didn't expect.

It has the unintended effect of blocking her third strike, but it leaves you terribly position for the fourth one that you see coming.

So you hop back and set your feet, getting away from her fourth attack and stepping back in, in anticipation of her fifth.

But the fifth comes more quickly than you're used to, and you're not even close to ready.

"One for me" Madelaine says as she steps away.

And problems also arise with focus when I forget to roll when I'm supposed to... but that's more of an issue with me than it is with the system.

I'm working on it.

Rolled 37 (1d100)

You step forward and lunge at Madelaine. She doesn't see it coming, but still she manages a sloppy guard at the last second.

She's faster than Derrick. You weren't expecting that. Now you are.

Madelaine gets her feet under her and tries to counter, but you're already on the offensive again.

You give her a few throwaway slashes and stabs to get a feel for her defense, which is something Derrick taught you, before hammering your sword right past her guard and into her shoulder.

"One for me" You say.

Madelaine scowls as she rubs her shoulder. She takes a deep breath, and lets it out, clearly trying to control her anger. "Okay... I had that coming" She says.

"It was a good lesson" You say.
"One we both had to learn, apparently..." She says, as she takes her hand away from her shoulder and sets her stance. "Okay, no tricks or surprises this time. Deal?"
"Deal" You say, as you set your feet and prepare for the last round. "Ready?"
"Ready" She says.

She leads off with a thrust.

It's the same one she started with last time, and it's easily swept aside. And just like last time, she quickly follows up with a few more stabs.

Parry the first, deflect the second. In the gap between strikes, you counter.

But apparently she doesn't expect you to counter, and continues with her attack regardless.

Your attack comes down and nails her right in the forehead.

Hers comes up and nails you right in the groin...

Madelaine gives a pained shriek and reels back. You try to shrug off the pain in your groin, but it grows until it becomes too much to bear. After a second, you fall to the floor and crumple into a ball.

"Ow" You say. "Ow owowowowowowow... wow, this hurts"
"Sorry!" Madelaine says as she rushes over to see if you're okay. "Meyu keeps telling me not to go there, but I didn't think you'd leave yourself open!"

"I thought the same thing" You say, unwilling to uncrumple yourself. "So what now?"
"I dunno" She says. "I guess we both got hit... so do we both lose?"
"Or we could both win" You say. "Which is it?"
"Up to you... I guess" She says.

"We never said what happens if we lose, only what happens if we win" You say. "So I guess we win?"

"Sounds good to me" She says. "Are you... okay?"
"Maybe" You reply. "that area is a lot more tender than I thought it would be"
"Never been hit down there?" She asks.
"No" You say.
"Well then that's another lesson" She says. "Can you stand?"
"I'm good down here" You say. "I'm gonna give it a few minutes before trying to stand"

"Alright" She says, as she sits down next to you. "So... I guess that I was mean to you because you reminded me of how I was"
"When you first woke up here?" You ask.
"Yeah" She says. "Plus you had that really dull look... and you said a lot of stupid things and asked a lot of stupid questions and I guess that just... got under my skin"

"Sorry?" You say, not sure if an apology is needed but figuring it's better to be safe than to be sorry.

Madelaine snorts. "Don't push it" She says.
"Okay" You say, not quite sure what she meant by that.

"Now you" She says. "What have you got?"

"Okay... well we did find the cave where I first woke up on the way here from Bell's Run" You say. "We were running from the Inquisition, and we hid in there to get away"

"How do you know it was the same cave?" She asks.
"I recognized the outside of Bell's Run as the place where I was captured before I went to Mortifas" You say.

"There are a few caves between here and Bell's Run" She says. "How do you know it was that one specifically?"

"Oh yeah, we looked further in and there was this massive pit" You say. "The pit had a big pillar in the middle, and stairs going down. At the bottom there was a few buttons that turned on this portal and lit up the pillar"

"Okay... that is interesting" She says. "How far away was it?"
"Not too far" You say. "But going out there and coming back would probably take up a whole day"

She nods. "I hear you're free tomorrow, maybe we can all-"
"I had some other things to do tomorrow" You say, cutting her off before she tries to commit you to something.

Madelaine does look kinda sad about it, though. Enough that it makes you feel kinda bad...

"But I guess I'll see how I feel about it in the morning" You say, as you get back to your feet. The pain in your groin has dulled... at least to the point where you can stand.

Madelaine cheers up, as you help her to her feet. "Okay. I'll see you at breakfast then" She says.
"Yeah" You say.

"But if you end up not wanting to show me the cave... I expect to hear some more interesting things" Madelaine says.
"Oh..." You say. "I can do that now, if you want. I have a few more things you might like"

Madelaine looks interested. "Go on"

"I've got this weird soul thing going on, that technically means I'm not alive... or something" You say. "It's the reason why Altea says I'm so important"

"I don't really get it, but okay" She says.
"Uhh... and Derrick thinks you're cute" You say.

Her face reddens. "H-he does?" She asks. "Did he say that?"
"No. But Ilica says that's what he thinks" You say. "I don't think she's wrong"

Madelaine gets a serious look on her face. "Thanks for the info" She says. "I'll go think on that"
"Alright" You say. "Goodnight"
"Goodnight" She replies.

Madelaine walks away, though not without a bit of a spring in her step, and leaves you to limp back to your room.

Even though the pain has mostly gone away, it still hurts. You might have to consider wearing some sort of armor down there...

But all in all, that was pleasant enough. You should spar with Madelaine more often, since she seems to be a bit closer to your level than Derrick is. And she's nice enough, now that she doesn't hate you... probably.

You manage to find your room without any trouble, and walk in to see Emi already in bed and asleep. She didn't leave you much room on the bed though...

But you do still have to sleep, so you lay down in the little room that's available. You figure that you'll wake up tangled anyway...

Hopefully your groin stops hurting by tomorrow morning. You'd really rather have to ask a healer to do anything down there...

And that's all for tonight!

Next thread will be... sometime. Still really up in the air, but I'll try to give as much notice as I can.

As always I'll be sticking around to take questions/suggestions
