>>1835637“Good work lad, looks like yar persevearance finally paid off. I already know what ya did, but just run me through it for comprehension’s sake.”You pull hard, uprooting the zweihander from the gouge in the earth you just made. “Well, I couldn’t really feel my own flow before, and initially I started by trying to conceptualise moving my flow to my arms when I was swinging. When I got the hang of that and started to feel my own flow, I built it up in the muscles I was going to use before I took my swing instead of during, and I guess I ended up underestimating my strength…”Moest nods, satisfied with your explanation. “Sounds about right lad. Congratulations, looks like ya finally figured out how to use surge. Surge’s a very important discovery, and it’s probably to most readily applicable flow technique for combat.”Now that you’ve taken a bit of time out, you realise how exhausted you actually are, you’re honestly ready to drop at any moment. The old man notices your fatigue, gesturing to the shack. “Go and get some rest lad, ya earnt it. Be ready to work hard tomorrow, it’s our last day of training and I need to make sure yar all fully prepared.”Knocking out’s a very enticing idea at the moment, and you follow Moest’s advice, struggling up the stairs to the shack. You’re the first one back, Theo and Sam nowhere to be seen, probably still training hard. You fix yourself a bowl of stew, recounting the day’s breakthroughs. Today’s been very productive, and you’ve figured out to use surge, and also used flow sense voluntarily for the first time. It’s only been two days and you’ve already got a solid arsenal of flow techniques under your belt, pretty good progress considering the fact that you hadn’t even heard of flow until you met Moest. Finished, you set the bowl aside and lie down on the bed, falling asleep practically as soon as you close your eyes.(cont)
>>1835641“Get yar arses up, eat yar breakfast and start moving lads! Can’t afford to be fookin’ around all day, chop chop!”[You’ve rested up, essence is now 4/5]All three of your rise groggily, snapped out of your blissful sleeps by the old man’s yelling. Your surprised to see Theo counted among you, since he’s usually up so early. Must’ve been training until pretty late last night to sleep in this much.Moest and Bole come over to each of you with waterskins and a massive plate of breakfast each. Moest pulls out a piece of parchment, a simple map of the whole Twin Rivers area detailed on it, debriefing you all as you eat. “So whilst ya been training, I been keeping an eye out for the possessed.” He points to a symbol on the map, a better part of a day’s walk south east of the shack. “It licks its wounds in its den, in a hollow trunk of a massive tree. If ya look up through the canopy ya won’t be able to miss it, towers above all the others.”He rolls up the parchment and tucks it into his pocket, walking out the door with Bole in tow. “Finish up, grab yar shit and meet me in the yard. Don’t dawdle.”Theo pipes up as you eat. “How goes your training guys? Magic’s been pretty difficult, but I finally feel like I’m starting to get the hang of it. I imagine flow is quite similar.”You nod, talking in between mouthfuls. “Aye, it’s going good, I made two major breakthroughs yesterday. One of them entails me being able to feel the flow in everything around me, and I’ve also figured out how to move my own flow to parts of my body to help with my movement.”Theo’s eyes go wide, smiling a bit. “That’s bloody sick Oscar, I never thought you’d be able to things like that. Well, I’ve read briefly about other people doing it, but I never imagined any of us would ever be capable of anything like that.” He turns to Sam who’s busy scoffing his food. “How about you man? Are you getting there as well?”Sam takes a break from munching down to answer Theo. “Aye, but in a completely different way. All that shit Oscar’s talking about, I’ve got no clue how to do it, but I had a different type of revelation and I worked all day yesterday with Moest to figure it out. I kind of realised, as Oscar was about to cut my fucking head off, that things like pain and fear are all in my mind, and if I circulate my flow properly I can completely ignore them.”(cont)
>>1835643You and Theo nod, taking in Sam’s words. Looks like he’s had a very different path in developing his flow compared to you, and you can’t wait to see his new ability in action. Once you’re finished up you grab your weapon and you waterskin, you and Sam walking down the stairs to the clearing whilst Theo circles around to the back to train in the shed.Moest waits for you like usual, examining the intricate artwork on his sword. He sheathes it when he sees you both coming, and turns to address you. “Alright lads, ya both done well and figured out yar respective revelations. I’m not gonna lie, yar both quick as fook learners and ya come far, to be honest I was only expecting ya to figure things out at the end of today. Cause ya made fast progress, we can focus on expanding on the abilities ya picked up.”Moest clears his throat then continues. “Sam, ya only had one revelation so far so ya only got one thing to work on, but Oscar, ya got a choice. Ya might have noticed that when ya use flow sense ya still got to focus hard, and that when ya use surge ya have to think about it before ya make yar move. With a bit a practise, we can improve on what ya already learnt. It’s gotta be one of the other though, otherwise ya ain’t gonna figure either of them out.”[What do you want to focus on for today? This is the last day of training.]>Try and make another breakthrough with flow sense>Try and make another breakthrough with surge>Try and make a breakthrough for the revelation Sam had, insouciance>Focus on being able to use flow sense in combat>Focus on making surge reactionary (allows the spending of essence for physical actions)>Write-in

>>1835648>Focus on making surge reactionary (allows the spending of essence for physical actions)Being able to spend is important
>>1835648>Focus on making surge reactionary (allows the spending of essence for physical actions)Seems the best for the fight, let us chop apart the possessed more easily. Is this gonna take all day? If we're gonna be using the zweihander I'd really really like to get it to +2, the same level as our standard swords skills, at least. It also seems unlikely to make another breakthrough in time, we'd need to figure out how to advance and then do so.Unless reactionary Surge would also take 10 points of progress like combat Sense, in which case I'd rather just train swording.
>>1835680Yep, pretty much>>1835686Making surge reactionary is going to cost 10 xp, so you're probably not going to get it done unless you go all day. Zwei training will also be incorporated if you go for training reactionary surge, but depending on how you roll it still might not be enough to get you to level 2.Working on the flow pastebin as we speak, so hopefully that'll make everything a lot clearer. In the meantime, if any of you want to change your votes due to new info, go ahead. I'll give it a bit more time so people have a chance to make a decision, then I'll count the votes.
>>1835701How much time of the day would it take to get a breakthrough with surge or flow sense, assuming we get regular success?

>>1835686>>1835701Well I'll change mine to>Try for a breakthrough(with either)then, hoping to just get it right away, see how much progress would be needed, and switch to arms training afterwards.Because getting +1 to attacks will be much more useful than being halfway to a new skill.
>>1835712Wait, forgot about sweetleaf, let's do arms training first so being drugged up won't mess with our physical training.

I hope people realize that even if we succeed in getting reactionary surge, we'll have 6 essence at most, so we won't be able to spam it. We need the +1 for the rest of combat, so either get ultra heavy to +2, or use a standard size sword.

>>1835847Yes definitely. Thought I added that in the pastebin, will do so now.
>>1835844You weigh up your options, deliberating on what you should focus on. Surge is definitely the most readily useable method, and you decide that learning to use it quicker and more fluidly will give you your best chance at taking out the possessed. You look to the old man, your mind made up. “Can you teach me how to use surge quicker? I feel like I have to force my flow around my body before I do anything, and I feel like I’m going to need to be more adaptable if we wanna take out the possessed. Is there a way I can make my flow get there quicker, making my surge more reactionary I guess?”Moest nods, satisfied with your choice. “Aye lad, reactionary surge is a staple for any warrior who wants to use flow to the best of their ability.” The old man runs his fingers through his beard, thinking about possible training exercises. “We can go about this two ways, depending how hard ya wanna go physically. If ya wanna use yar zwei, I’ll get Theo out here and ya can do some joint training, otherwise we’ll get started right away.”>Train with the zweihander (Will physically tire you out)>Use the less intensive training method>Write-in[Also, do you smoke the sweetleaf?]>Yes>No

>>1835934You just woke up, and you went pretty hard just before you went to bed yesterday, so you decide to take things slow and steady for now. “I’ll take it easy for now I reckon, warm up a bit first and build up to it.”Moest grunts. “No such thing as taking it easy here lad, it’s just gonna be less physically taxing and instead I’m gonna be pushing ya harder with flow.” The old man walks off towards the trail to the stump, expecting you to follow. “Hurry up lad, we ain’t got all day. Sam, keep doing what we were doing yesterday. If ya want more of a physical challenge, go grab Theo and ask him to help ya train.”Sam nods and picks up his spear, with you following Moest as he hobbles off into the woods. You make it to the tranquil little clearing, the soft, morning light filtering down from above on to the massive stump. Moest gestures for you to take a seat, and you oblige.“Alright lad, take a seat and close yar eyes. Get comfortable and visualise yar flow moving through yar body. Let me know when ya got all that sorted.”You focus on your breathing, letting yourself get into a natural rhythm. Instead of focusing outwards and trying to tune into the pulse of your surroundings, you look inward, concentrating on your own life force. You feel a cool sensation flow through your veins, spread evenly throughout your body but quite concentrated where your heart is. You test your capabilities out a bit, willing your flow to the ends of your finger tips. Gradually your fingers start to feel quite icy, and you release your influence, your flow once again spreading out accordingly. You nod at Moest, satisfied, though keeping your eyes closed. “Alright got it. What do I do next?”You hear the old man’s voice in front of you. “Alright lad, don’t panic cause it might feel a bit funny, but I’m now going to block yar flow. Try and push through it, overcome my influence.”(cont)
>>1835962Slowly you start to feel your flow being pushed out of your arms forcibly. The feeling is hard to describe. it’s more like a complete lack of feeling, and despite you being able to move your arms, it’s almost like you brain doesn’t even register that they exist anymore. Slightly uneasy, but confident you won’t break your focus, you open your eyes and lay your palms flat on the stump, rubbing them against the rough surface. You don’t feel a thing, and even though your arms are moving and you’re wiggling your fingers, there is a complete void in terms of the sense of touch. As far as the feeling part of your brain is concerned, you don’t have, and have never had arms. You close your eyes and focus, trying to force your way through Moest’s barrier. At first, you try and push all your flow at once, attempting to force your way in. It works slowly at first and you start to make progress, but the longer you push, the harder it gets. It’s almost like you’re holding your breath, and once you get to a certain point your flow relents, settling back into an even spread as its once again pushed out of your arms. Realising the futility in trying to force your way through, you instead try to weasel your way into the void, sending out long, thin tendrils of your flow probing in, trying to find the gaps. Again, you have a bit of success, but as soon as your tendrils get too long and you try to unite them, they’re crushed by the power of Moest’s void. You’re in the process of weaselling your way in when the void recedes, rejoicing as the feeling comes back into your arms. You open your eyes as Moest stands up, relying on a nearby tree to support his weight. You sigh, disappointed at your lack of progress, though you don’t think you efforts were completely wasted. After trying to force your way through the barrier, you’re sure you can now command your flow with a lot more vigor than before.[2xp gained toward reactionary surge][Essence: 3/5] Moest butts in, offering you some advice. “Chin up lad, ya don’t always get it the first time. Instead of trying to force your flow in, and getting things clogged up, ya should focus on clearing the way first. Something to think about for next time.”Your stomach rumbles, keen for lunch, and you take that as a signal to head back to the shack. You walk slowly, not leaving Moest behind as he hobbles along.(cont)
>>1835963As you emerge from the tree line, your surprised to see Sam and Theo training together. Theo swings his staff, sending a decent sized rock hurtling towards Sam, following up by levitating a group of five pebbles rotating in a circle, sending each of them hurtling towards Sam surprisingly quick. Sam sidesteps the rock, dashing quickly towards Theo in an effort to close the distance. 4 of the pebble go wide, Theo’s aim completely off, but one hits Sam squarely in the gut.Sam doesn’t even flinch, taking no notice of it, and powers through, spear brandished. Theo slams the butt of his staff into the ground, then points to the ground with his middle three fingers. The ground starts to churn where Sam’s about to take his next step, and a sinkhole appears, forcing Sam to stumble and go off balance. Theo, making the most of Sam’s lapse in movement, readies another string of five pebbles, firing them directly at Sam.However, Theo’s aim is absolutely terrible, and all of them go wide. Sam, grinning, strides quickly and confidently towards Theo, bringing the tip of his spear to his neck.Sweat pours down Sam’s face as he stands triumphant. “Looks like you’re dead motherfucker.”Theo huffs, frustrated with his performance. “That’s still five for five though. We’re dead even, so stop being a smug git just cause you won in front of Moest. We’ll settle this later.”You and Moest clap, genuinely impressed with the fight. Sam’s always been pretty handy and agile with the staff, and the spear’s pretty similar, but Theo has definitely come a long way these past few days with his magic. It’s the first time you’ve seen Earth magic properly in action, and you can see it being deadly once Theo irons out the finer details in his technique. All of your eyes light up as Bole lumbers down the stairs, balancing 4 big bowls of stew for everybody. You all eagerly eat up, the sun almost directly above you.[That’s 1/3 sessions for today done, and you’re still well rested. >>1839470Did we get any Flow exp for learning Surge?
>>1839479Yes you did, forgot to update that and a couple of other things before I knocked out last night
>>1839470You dig into the delicious stew, the slow cooked meat falling apart in your mouth. It tastes pretty gamey, and you’d like to say its goat but you’re not too sure. Theo wolfs his food down and leaves to go back to the shed, a focused expression on his face. Regardless, you’re now fully woken up and the food’s giving you the fuel you need for the rest of the day, ready to ramp the physical side of your training up.You take a swing from your waterskin, everybody except for Moest finished eating. You stand up, picking up your zweihander “Alright, I’m ready to kick things off. Reactionary surge’s meant to be essential an essential method for battle right? Might as well start practising with a sword in hand too, get ready for the real thing.”Moest nods, liking your foresight. “Aye, that’s the way. Get some zweihander training in as well.”The old man stands up with Bole’s assistance, grabbing onto the golem for support. “Now, the best way to do this would be for me to beat the shite outta ya with a wooden sword whilst I blocked yar flow, and ya try to come at me hard. He reminisces for a moment, a melancholy expression coming to his face. “But alas, I’m in no shape to spar with ya. I’m so fookin’ slow with me wooden leg that I could clog yar entirely flow and ya would still get me.”The old man then turns to address Sam. “Instead, yar both going to go at it while I block yar flow.”You furrow your brow, not agreeing with the old man’s training exercise. “That’s bullshit, Sam will wreck me if I can’t use flow. We’re not gonna anywhere if I’m just gonna get my ass handed to me the rest of the day.”Sam shakes his head, smirking. “Don’t worry man, there’s a catch. I came up with this idea cooked as fuck last night, and it entails me getting to be quite fucked up too.”Moest tuts, waving a hand at you dismissively. “Relax lad, fookin hell. Sam’s asked me to teach him an interesting avenue of combat, so he’s going to be about 10 bowls of sweetleaf in. If anything, yar gonna have the advantage.”(cont)
>>1839582Sam starts packing his bowl, progressively getting more and more fucked as he tears through each of them. Moest continues as Sam smokes. “The aim is not gonna be to injure one another. I want ya to focus on moving and trying to intercept his spear strikes, only going to strike him to keep him on his toes or force him to move. He’s not gonna be aiming to hit ya either and will mostly just be feinting strikes. Despite this, don’t ya dare get timid on me and not put force behind yar swings. If anything goes awry, I’ll stop it like last time.” You nod, taking your place at one side of the clearing, focusing on your flow as Sam finishes smoking. The more you conceptualise your flow, the easier it gets, and it only takes a moment to feel the cool sensation radiating throughout your whole body. You open your eyes to Sam standing opposite the clearing, slightly hunched with a trace of a smile on his face.Moest’s voice booms across the clearing, and you start to feel your flow forced from your arms and legs, getting packed into your torso and your head. “Alright lads, whenever yar ready!”It feels weird moving forward. Just like earlier today, you don’t feel any trace of your arms or legs, and it feels like you’re levitating as you walk, not registering any feeling in your legs at all. As far as your inner perception is concerned, you’re literally just a floating torso with no limbs. The lack of feeling creates a big disconnect between actually moving your limbs, and then seeing it happen, driving you stumble haphazardly across the clearing. You instinctively reach behind your back to draw your zweihander, but end up having to twist so you can see where the hilt is, unable to go by feel.Sam’s also pretty wobbly as he moves forwards, swaying and stumbling as he grasps his spear with both hands. A trace of a smile lingers, as if he’s clued into some slightly amusing aspect of reality. As you meet in the middle of the clearing, Sam wastes no time, jabbing at you wildly with his spear. You almost fall over as you sway wildly to get out of the way, recovering quickly and countering with a wild swing of your own. You exchange clumsy blows, your competitive nature getting in the way of the exercise.Moest’s bellows, berating both of you. “This isn’t a fookin’ fight for Vauls sake! Stop trying to turn this into a fookin’ pissing match and focus on what yar here to do!”You back off, taking in Moest’s words. Recollecting yourself, you instead focus on your flow, especially on the voids that riddle each of your limbs. Sam lurches forward, jabbing at you again and keeping the pressure on.
>>1839583It’s hard to think about your flow and try to combat the void when you have a spear tip constantly darting near your face. You try and get your zweihander up to intercept Sam’s strikes, but you’re way too slow and uncoordinated, and all you hit is empty air. You think on what Moest said at your previous session, about first clearing the way for your flow before you try to force it through. It takes you a while to realise, but the void that blocks your flow isn’t really a void, and is actually just foreign flow placed there by Moest that you can’t control. This whole time you’ve been conceptualising moving your flow as pushing it around your body from its source where your heart is, all of the movement starting from the centre. You have an epiphany, realising that you’re in full control of your body and the pathways which your flow moves through, not just the source of where your flow originates. Instead of trying to force Moest’s flow out, you should just let yourself relax and let it leak, clearing the way for your own flow to move through.Where there was once a complete lack of feeling at all, a faint numbness grows and replaces it. A vague awareness of your limbs moving grows to uncomfortable pins and needles as the void in your limbs recedes into your surroundings. You sidestep and dance around Sam, biding your time and waiting for your limbs to go back to normal. Your flow slowly comes to replace the void, and once it’s gone completely you strike, swatting Sam’s spear out of his hands with surge enhanced speed, quickly stepping in and shoulder barging him to the ground before he can recover. You look over to Moest who smiles and claps. “And that’s how it’s done. Good effort, from both of ya.”[3 xp gained towards Reactionary Surge!][2 xp gained toward Swordsmanship [Ultra Heavy]! >>1841804You take a moment to rest, your exercise with Sam taking it out of both you. After a while you’re ready to go, but Sam lies flat on the grass, absolutely exhausted. You get up, stretching your legs. “So I’m guessing no round 2 then?”Sam shakes his head, getting up slowly. “No fucking way man, I’ve been doing shit all day and I’m pooped. Probably gonna go reflect, have dinner, then read Iroh Tomotaki’s memoirs till I fall asleep to be honest. Make sure I’m well rested for tomorrow.”You nod, remembering that Sam was going toe to toe with Theo before you started training together. Regardless, you smirk. “Alright man, if you’re gonna be a massive pussy no worries. I’ll just have to go get Theo.”Sam chuckles, not taking the bait. “Fuck you dude, I’ll see ya in the morning.”You give each other a wave as you go your respective ways, Sam walking into the woods to the stump whilst you walk up to Moest’s shack to fetch Theo. Skirting around the side of the shack, you can hear thunk of stones ricocheting off of wood. You walk around to see Theo concentrating hard as he levitates a slowly spinning ring of pebbles, pointing forward with his middle three fingers as he sends them flying towards a tree trunk. Most of them go wide like in his sparring match against Sam, though his accuracy has definitely improved over the day, with 2 of the five bouncing off the trunk. Bole hobbles over to the trunk and collects the small stones, putting them into a small pile near Theo’s feet.(cont)
>>1842086You pipe up as Theo wipes the sweat off his forehead. “How’s your training going man? You’ve definitely gotten a bit more accurate with those stones I reckon.”Theo nods, though he still looks dissatisfied with himself. “Aye, but It’s still not good enough Oscar. I should be hitting 3 of them on average at least, otherwise I’m not gonna be any bloody help tomorrow.”You shake your head, looking at the indents on the tree trunk. “You’re being way too hard on yourself dude. Look at how much damage you’ve done to this tree for Vaul’s sake! Sam may have shrugged one of those off, but that’s because he was using that flow method he learnt. You hit the possessed with one of those, especially if you get a head shot or nail one of its knees, and it won’t be able to shrug that off easy. Could easy give us the opening to finish it off.”Theo weighs up your words, still not really convinced, and you continue. “You should get some practise in trying to hit a moving target. You down to come have a spar in the clearing? I need to reflect and restore my essence first, but that shouldn’t take long.”Theo nods, gathering his things. “Yeah, that sounds like a good idea, and I need to gather more mana anyway. Bole, fill that sack with some pebbles and come down when you’re done.”(cont)
>>1842094You both walk back down to the clearing, both of you taking a seat as you go to replenish your reserves. Theo assumes a weird pose, pressing his fists together in front of his chest. You, on the other hand, just make yourself comfortable, soon lulling into the deep and introspective thought characteristic of reflecting. You think about your time since you last reflected, having used flow sense consciously for the first time and figuring out surge. It’s only been a few days, but you’ve made major progress. You smile, pleased with how much you can learn if you put your mind to it. It’s exhilarating, training and getting stronger, and too be honest, you have no clue how you’re going to adjust back to ordinary life in Hearthspring after this.[Essence restored! Now at 4/5]You open your eyes, stretching your legs, Theo finishing up a moment later. You’re supposed to be focusing on figuring out reactionary surge, but you’d be lying if you said you didn’t care about winning. You draw your zweihander as Theo slowly levitates the pebbles, determined to give each other a good fight.[What’s your plan of attack?]>Theo’s gotten better, but he’s still pretty inaccurate with the pebbles. Since you’re focusing on it you’ll gain insight over the course of the fight, though write-ins regarding the nature of the method may grant you extra xp.]
>>1842098I can't really see a difference between Surge and Reactionary Surge other than maybe using the Flow that's already at the location so you don't have to move flow from the chest into the area of use.
>>1842098>Theo’s gotten better, but he’s still pretty inaccurate with the pebbles. Focus on dodging them and moving forward.Try to accumulate Flow and make it dense then quickly using it when you need. Think of a burst
>>1842098>He has to focus hard to cast his spells. Try and use surge to close distance as quickly as possible.Theo seems to use the pebbles more like a vidya game shotgun than a sniper rifle so dodging has a good chance of ending getting hit by a pebble going wide.
>>1842124I hope this isn't completely retarded.
>>1842098>>Theo’s gotten better, but he’s still pretty inaccurate with the pebbles. Focus on dodging them and moving forward.>>Try and use surge to help with dodging if need be.Also observations/ideas>We could just "relax" and let the foreign flow leak out, so is that what happens with our own flow normally too? Can we maybe keep ours inside our body more than we are now be concentrating?>What if we also use our flow to push against foreign flow as it leaks out, or allow for leakage only in a more contained area? And because I assume we won't get foreign flow this time.>Since we can control our flow on our whole body, and maybe stop it from leaking, maybe we could construct such a "barrier" inside our body too? Maybe minimalizing how much flow there is inside our arm, mimicking how our flow was forced out by the foreign one, and then suddenly pushing/letting a large amount flow back into it and fill it up is the point, control the distribution of our flow more consciously overall.Reminds me of HxH a bit desu
ok so focusing on reactionary surge so ignoring flow sense for now>make a tennis racquet out of grass and sticks, hit theo's pebbles back at him>Hang just outside of his range and try to bait his attacks. Force him to move, breaking his casting, and get then go in fast using surge, possibly catching him off balance.i think this would be far more useful to against the possessed tomorrow, he's one high damage mothafucker. great to practice. also lets theo practice as well under pressure, learn about failing>go in fast with surgezweihander is a big fuckin sword, it's no easy lug for oscar. most effective moves to match its style are going to be big swings.focus on shifting your weight utilising the swords nature, minimalising energy you have to use against it and instead carry with its momentum into another movement.Rather trying to stop it dead and move away, alter the course of momentum and make a defensive/offensive manouevre through thatEG> theo prepares to launch another shot of pebbles>you notice he has to look at the ground to locate and focus on them first to levitate them>you bait and dodge the attack staying out of range>you keep your zwei's center of gravity on the back foot>as soon as you see he's going to go for the pebbles, begin running and bringing the sword under and forwards, gaining it forward momentum - using your reactionary flow to focus energy where you need it, legs for closing distance and preparing to shoot it into shoulders>as you approach to within a few metres, plant front foot in the ground like a big lunge, swinging the sword around wide in a big low arc, surging flow to shoulders, rotation of hip and grip on sword[don't hit him so theos legs don't come off? lol]keep swinging it, use its momentum as it returns to push back off the front leg and return out of way into a defensive position. use surge defensively in pushing back off front leg
^recall this sweet write in from thread 3>Try and get a feel for how your body wants to move, use the natural sway and the slope of the ground to use your momentum for easier movement, let the wind of Sam's movements push you out of the way of his strikes, feel his focus and tensing, while being as natural and unreadable as you can. Maybe try and use the reactions of the light, wind, sound of foliage, movement of birds to get a better idea of things you can't directly see, like how Sam is shifting his weight, etc.not about awareness of shifting weight. very keen to use this to enhance zwei tekkers

>>1847102Nope, only upping your overall flow level will make it easier to learn methods. That being said though, the higher rank of your methods, the higher your flow level will be generally, otherwise you're going to reach a point where you plateau as it'll take too long to progress.
>>1847099You eye the rotating ring of pebbles, watching it carefully as it spins faster and faster. You move forward slowly and cautiously, directing your flow to your legs in preparation for the burst of movement you’ll need to dodge faster. Theo grips his staff hard in one hand, holding out his other in direction of the pebbles, thumb scrolling as he ups the rotation. The afterimages of the pebbles start to blend into each other, and suddenly he points at you with his middle and index finger, sending the pebbles flying. The pebbles cut through the air, like someone just threw them at you as hard as they possibly could. You go to dive out of the way, almost releasing your surge, though you notice he’s only launched two, the remaining three still spinning in front of him. Hitting the ground, you quickly push yourself up into a crouch, making for an easy target. Theo, grinning devilishly, fires the remaining three pebbles, convinced he’s got you.The look on his face is priceless as you release the flow you moved to your legs into your muscles, the pebbles flying harmlessly beneath you as you spring 6 feet into the air.Theo’s jaw’s still slack when you land, and you waste no time closing the distance. You can’t help the vicious smile that comes to your face, knowing full well that you’ve got him on the ropes. That’s the first time Theo’s seen surge in action, since Sam is yet to figure it out, and you can’t help but feel smug. After all, you just jumped 6 feet into the air. 6. Fucking. Feet.Fully self-absorbed in how fucking awesome your dodge was, and revelling in Theo’s amazement, you fail to notice Theo pointing to the ground in front of you with his middle three fingers. Your facial expressions swap as Theo slams the butt of his staff into the ground, a deep sinkhole opening right where you’re going to step. As you stumble, Theo brings his staff into both hands and swings, sending a much bigger rock hurtling towards you in a lazy arc.[Roll me 3d10+4 [+2 (Previous insight), +2 (Hunch from Write-in)] VS DC 20]

Sorry about the prolonged absence anons, had a surprise bender Thursday night, then had some shit to do yesterday.>>1847145You’re already falling forward as the rock arcs towards you. In a split-second you realise that there’s no way you’re going to be able to correct yourself in time to side step the rock, and that your only option is to utilise your forward momentum and jump across the sinkhole. Problem is that your right foot is standing on nothing but air, and you’re not going to be able to hop across without the help of surge. On a complete hunch you attempt to compress your flow, then send it quickly in a burst to your left leg. You release, expecting to launch across the hole in the ground, but you let go way too quickly, your pressurised flow dissipating into other parts of your body and into your surroundings. Instead of flying across the ditch in one stride, you feebly hop normally across the sinkhole. Whilst still airborne, the rock hits your right in the shoulder, pulverising into a cloud of dust as it makes contact, sending you into a spin mid-air which results in you landing your on ass in the ditch. You cough and splutter in the dust cloud as you see Theo’s head look down on you, a victorious smile on his face. “Looks like that’s 1 to me, 0 for you. It’s a good thing there’s heaps of this ‘powder stone’ stuff in the shed, cause if that was the real deal I probably would’ve broken your shoulder. In the spell book I’m reading, the author mentioned it’s what’s used in all formal Earth magic training in Camewell. It’s nice and safe cause it’s breaks on impact, but it still hurts enough that you’ll avoid it. Just try not to breathe in too much dust.”You finish your coughing fit and grab your sword, climbing out of the sinkhole frustrated with your lapse in focus. “Too -cough- fucking late for that, isn’t it?”Theo smiles cheekily, pleased that he got to knock off your shit-eating grin. “Don’t be salty mate, you’ve still got a plenty of rounds to show that your flow shit is completely inferior to magic.”You shake your head, now even more determined to crush him. “Yeah, we’ll see about that. Get back to your side, let’s go again.”(cont)
>>1851614You fight a few more rounds, drenched in sweat and dust as your sparring goes longer into the night. Theo gets a couple more wins here and there, but overall you end up flogging him, not making any more stupid mistakes again. Over the course of your training you try to apply the concept of pressurising your flow and releasing it all at once, though you can only manage the initial build up, unable to create a way to facilitate a pressurised stream of flow to go to the areas of your body that you need it to. Regardless, the process of pressurising your flow takes a bit too long to use it reactionarily, though you can tell that if you get the hang of it your surge will definitely be stronger overall. Though you’re yet to get the hang of it, you now know for sure that you’re close to figuring reactionary surge out, and you realise the key to finally making it work is the way you facilitate the travel of flow through your body. Mucking around with pressurising your flow seems a bit difficult at the moment, though you register it as a concept to explore more in the future.[Essence: 1/5][3 xp gained towards Reactionary Surge. You are now at 8/10 xp.][2 xp gained towards Swordsmanship [Ultra Heavy]. You are now at 2/10 xp.]You were supposed to go for 15 rounds, though you decided to end at 11, as your led was too big, the score 8-3 in your favour. Theo’s salty at his performance, dissecting the past fights. “There’s no fucking way I can counter your surge bullshit at the moment. I have no clue how you figured out something like that so quick. Like, what fuck can I even do when you can close distance between us in 3 seconds?”You shrug, amused at his saltiness. “No clue man, guess you’re just gonna have to get good.”You chuckle as Theo’s face goes red with frustration, muttering profanities as he stomps back to the shack. Though you may have won the sparring contest by a lot, you’re still pretty pissed that you’ve failed to figure out reactionary surge. The moon sits high in the sky, and you’re absolutely exhausted, but you can’t settle yourself. You only need a bit more insight and you’ll have it figured out, you know it, though if you stay out longer you’re going to be knackered for tomorrow.>Try one more reflection for reactionary surge. >>1851690As much as you’re itching to figure out reactionary surge and push on, you’re most probably going to have the fight of your life tomorrow, and you need to make sure you’re as well rested and prepared as can be. You stifle a yawn as you follow Theo up the stairs, realising how exhausted you actually are now that the adrenaline from your sparring has worn off.Your nose picks up on the beautiful aroma of cooking food as you open the door to the shack, walking in to Moest stirring a pot of stew as Sam lounges back and reads one of Iroh Tomotaki’s memoirs. The old man claps his hands as you and Theo walk in, setting the spoon down beside the pot. “Lovely timing lads, stew’s just about done. Get yar shoes off an make yarselves comfortable, we got a couple of things we gotta run through before ya have yar dinner and knock out.”You and Theo happily oblige, basking in the bliss of giving your legs a rest and taking your boots off after a long day. All of you give your attention to Moest as he debriefs you. “As yar probably fully aware, today’s the last day of yar training. First off, I don’t give credit where it isn’t due, and I mean it when I say ya all done fookin’ well. Congratulations on yar effots lads, ya should all be proud of how far ya come these past few days.” You can’t help but smile, reminiscing on how much stronger you’ve gotten in such a short amount of time. Theo and Sam can’t get over it either, Moest also grinning at your lifted spirits, though his expression once again turns serious as he continues. “Now it’s time to put yar training to the test. Tomorrow afternoon, assuming ya make good time, yar gonna be in for the fight of yar fookin’ life. I’m not gonna be there with ya, and Bole would only be of minimal help so he’s gonna be staying put too. The three of ya are gonna be on yar own, and thus the fate of Hearthspring rests entirely in yar hands.”(cont)
>>1851891Moest strokes his beard as he takes the vibe in, all of you stony faced as you start to truly realise the responsibility that’s been thrust upon you. “That being said though lads, yar not gonna be totally without help. My job’s always been to prepare ya three as best I can, and I’ve got a few of things for ya before ya set off. But first, let’s eat.”Moest gestures to the three of you to get your food, each of you loading up your bowls to the brim. As you dig in, Moest sidles over to the big chest in the corner of the room, opening the lid. He digs around inside for a bit, before producing two small pouches and a lantern. The old man throws the first pouch to Theo. He reaches inside, pulling out a rich brown gemstone. “Three pieces of Earthsoul in that pouch lad. That stuff will react extremely well with yar magic, being very easy to manipulate. They’re fookin’ valuable, so use them very wisely. Vaul knows how pissed my wife used to get when she’d lose them on the field, she’d be in a mood for fookin’ days!”The next pouch he tosses to Sam. From within the pouch he pulls out a familiar sight, a glowing crystal exactly like the ones that healed you before. “My last supply of Clearspring ice. There’s 3 left in there, try not to get yarself into a position where ya have to use them.”Moest then hobbles over to you, the lantern in his grasp. It illuminates with a ghostly white light, bleaching the room in its soft glow. He then turns it off, passing it over to you. “I saw ya hand over the last of yar lantern oil to Theo when ya were fighting the possessed at the lake, and I thought ya might need an upgrade. This is a ghost lantern, an artifact I picked up on my travels. Ya just need to will it to turn on, and it will do so. Doesn’t need any fuel, and ya when ya get outside its immediate vicinity, ya can’t seem to see its light. It’s served me well over the years, and hopefully it does the same for ya.”(cont)
>>1851894You’re all fascinated with the gifts the old man’s given you, and he lets out a whistle to catch your attention once again. “One more thing lads, before I leave ya to it. When, not if, ya defeat the possessed, I need ya to do me a crucial favour. Cut off one of its antlers, then bring it to back here to me. After that, ya will be free to make yar ways back to Hearthspring.” Moest looks uneasy, before waving his hand dismissively as he walks out the door and into the night. “That’s all lads, now get some rest and I’ll see ya in the morning.”The mood in the room is solemn in anticipation for what’s to come, and you all try to get to sleep once you’ve finished your food. You toss and turn for quite a while, struggling to clear your mind, though your exhaustion from the day’s training eventually overpowers the anticipation of tomorrow’s events, and after a while you fall into a deep and peaceful sleep. When you wake up, it’s straight to business, packing your bag and scoffing your massive breakfast down. Moest’s already prepared your rations for the trip, handing a sack full of cured meat, pickled vegetables, cheese, and leftover stew to Theo for the journey. You fill your waterskin, strap your zweihander to your back, and sling your bag over your shoulder, meeting Moest and the others outside in preparation to leave.
