Hell, what would you expect, if it grew alongside your culture, mimicking your ways, and shaping your society, while your culture shaped it equally as much. Resting under a rigidly-enforced masquerade, the society of magic and magical beings has law enforcement, various magical services, and even governments. However, you are none of those, you're... special. You are what many would call a detective, offering your skills as both an investigator and a mage to track down anything anyone needs found.------------------------------------------------------------------------Last time, in Fantasy Detective Quest, you determined your life story, and met the first applicant to the position of your temp helper.

Fuuuuuck. I guess this thread is being held hostage by 4chan. HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

>>1442799"I'm Sean Brannigan, Detective." Giving her hand a shake, you lean back in your seat, smiling kindly. Poor thing looks like it took all of her courage to not just bolt out of the building. Wringing her hands together, Alex mumbles something under her breath, and looks down at your desk for a while, before looking up at you."Y-yeah, I'm here f-for the temp job. I saw your ad i-in the paper."The coffee maker fills the background with a unique popping sound, and you point at the machine, friendly, and ask:"Coffee?"
>>1442930Alex nods, and you stretch, walking over to the coffee maker languidly. Taking out an extra cup, you pull the pot out, and set the cups down on the counter beside the machine. "Black or no?"Alex, surprised by your question, hesitates, but eventually shakes her head. Shrugging, you pull some coffee creamer out of the fridge, some cheap stuff that the dollar store down the street had on sale.pouring the cups, you put creamer in both, and begin to walk to you desk, when you hear a loud slamming at your door. Raising your eyebrows, and giving Alex a knowing look, you hand her a cup and set the other down on the desk. Walking to the door, you look through the peephole, and see the second young lady to come to your office early in the morning. A chipper-looking redhead stands outside your door, bouncing on the balls of her feet, patiently waiting. Opening the door, you raise a single eyebrow, and say, "Can I help you, miss?"Nodding happily, even at this godforsaken time in the morning, the young woman steps forward, reaching into her bag, which you see, is stuffed to the brim with papers. "Hiya! I'm Melissa, and I'm here to apply for the temp position you offered! As you'll see-" She pulls out a sheaf of paper, all held together with a single, overworked paperclip, and hands it to you, "I'm more than qualified for the position."Scratching your chin, you look at her, briefly, then shrug, and say,>"Come on in, I just made some coffee.">"I already have someone applying right now, but you can come back after, apply then.">"I've got someone applying right now, but you're welcome to take a seat, wait inside.">Write-in.

>>1442934"Come on in, I just made some coffee." Motioning to your desk, you turn around, and say, "I got another seat in here somewhere. Gimme a moment." Leading her in, you point to the coffee on the desk. "You don't want it black just tell me, there's plenty in the pot." Smiling, Melissa walks in confidently, and smiles as she passes Alex, grabbing the coffee and turning around, leaning on your desk. Blowing on the drink a bit, she takes a sip, and waves, introducing herself to the shy woman as you leave the room."Hi! I'm Melissa, and you are?""A-Alex... nice to meet you..."
>>1443151You tune out their introductions as you look around the kitchen for your spare chair. Yes, contrary to how it might feel (what with the cramped living quarters,) you had more than one room in here. You even had a bathroom, in the far corner of the kitchen, which was the size of a small closet. Why hadn't you gotten a better apartment decades ago, you don't know.Grabbing the spare chair, you walk back into the office half of your apartment, and set it down for the redhead to use. Nodding graciously, Melissa takes her seat, and says to Alex, "Well, Alex, it looks like it's time to get down to business!"Nodding, Alex agrees, and the two young women look at you expectantly as you pour yourself a third cup of coffee, emptying the pot. Putting in the creamer, you smile, and take your seat. Studying the two young women briefly, you consider your next words, and ask,>"So why do you want this job?">"What can you do for me, as my assistant?">"First off, do you know what my work entails?">Write-in.

>>1443154"First off, do you know what my work entails?" You look pointedly at them, staring into their eyes, gauging their reactions. "I wouldn't want you to get into anything you don't understand."Uncertain as to who is supposed to speak first, the girls look at each other, but Melissa quickly takes the lead, confident. "You're a paranormal detective, like the name of your business describes. Magical Services and Investigation. I'd assume you go around investigating... paranormal things for money."Alex, not one to be left behind, even with her shyness, speaks up."Y-yeah, you investigate stuff that normal private d-detectives don't go for. L-like Ed Crusher!"Groaning, you bury your face in your hands, muffling your voice. Looking up at Alex, you shake your head."I am nothing like that... that HACK. He goes around abandoned buildings and pretends to get spooked by noises on camera, for the television."Curious, Alex and Melissa look at you, quizzically. "I investigate ACTUALLY magical crimes and paranormal activity, thank you very much. I get enough prank calls from drunken louts who see my number in the paper or the phonebook and decide to have a laugh at the 'wizards' expense."Alex looks incredibly skeptical, managing to raise an eyebrow, and then blushing and looking down at her hands. However, Melissa looks to believe your every word. Huh. Shaking your head, you begin to speak, when your desk phone rings. Alex looks at you disbelievingly. "You still have a landline?"Nodding, you hold a finger up to your lips, pick up the phone, and say:>"Magical Services and Investigation, Brannigan speaking.">"Yeah this is Brannigan, how can I help you?">"Who's this, and why are they calling me this early?">Write-in.

>>1443350Biting back the urge to threaten to turn the caller into a toad, you shake your head, and attempt to be civil."Yeah, this is Brannigan, how can I help you?"A silky smooth, dulcet female voice comes from the phone receiver, burrowing into your ear."Ah, Detective Brannigan, I have need of your services. Please, meet me on the top floor of Diamond Place, Oak Avenue, as soon as you can. My name is Alice Aldershall, or at least, that's what you'll tell the man at the desk."Nodding as you processed the information, whispering the street, the name, and the building to yourself. "Got it. Alright, I'll be there as soon as I can. Goodbye."You swear you can hear the flirtatious smile in her voice, as she replies. "Very well then, I look forward to it. Bye~"Looking at the two young women sitting before you, who stare up at you curiously, you decide on something.>"Both of you, come with me. We'll see how you do with a case before I decide anything.">"You know what? As of now, you're both my assistants. Come on.">"Leave your numbers on my desk, I'll call each of you back later, I have to deal with this.">Write-in.

>>1443524"Both of you, come with me. We'll see how you do with a case before I decide anything."The two young women look at you uneasy, and then share a glance that you can barely read. Standing up with you, they get ready to follow you, and you pull on your coat, Walking past them, you hold the door open for the two girls, and exit into the apartment building hallway. Shutting, and locking the door behind you, you exit into the hall, and come across a very unwelcome sight. A little old lady, with quite the massive hat, stands in your path to the stairs, smoking from a long stick cigarette from the 40s. It's your landlord. Again. Well, this should be a treat.Putting on your best fake smile, you stride forward, hands outstretched. "Mrs. Kendall, I was just thinking of you! I-"The woman cuts you off sharply and brusquely, blowing acrid smoke in your face, causing you to cough violently. "Mr. Brannigan. Where's my fucking rent."She doesn't even ask, rather, she states it, like she expects an answer that satisfies her, and quickly. >"I'll have it tonight, Mrs. Kendall. Just be patient, please.">"I said I'd get it to you, and I always do. Please stop bugging me.">"Blow it out your ass, you old bat, I'll have it later.">Write-in.

>>1443765Sighing, you bite your tongue and remain polite. "It'll be in your hands tonight Mrs. Kendall. How's your husband by the way?" The best way to make sure that this ended amicably was to take her mind off it.The old woman lets out a sharp grin, which is quite unsettling on her old, shriveled face. Taking a deep breath of smoke, she leans back, tension relaxing from her shoulders."Good. And Mr. Kendall's doing quite fine, even if he doesn't GET OFF HIS LAZY ASS!"She directs this to an open door near the end of the hallway, their personal home. A faint reply comes from the house, a feeble-sounding old man."Dammit woman I have a broken leg!""Yeah, well, so did I when I was in Guinea, and I STILL made it through to the army!""Don't bring Guinea up to me, we were both much younger then! I'm an old man, Jane!""And I still can call you out on your shit, because-"She slams the door behind her, so the old couple can argue in peace.
>>1444032Stunned for a moment, Alex and Melissa simply stand there and blink, as you sigh, and say, "C'mon, let's go."The two young women are shocked into action by your voice, and follow you closely down the stairs. It's the second flight before either one of them speaks. It's Alex who first breaks the silence."Wh-what was t-that, exactly?"Melissa gives you a sidelong glance, and says, "I'd like to know as well.">"That's my landlady. If you haven't guessed, we have a... strained relationship.">"That's Mrs. Kendall. You'll see her around.">"Eh, she's just a grump. Isn't helped by the fact that I'm usually late on rent.">Write-in.
