What are you?” Focus, focus. “My name is Baphy,” you reply easily. The witch flicks her hand up in a short and rigid gesture and the ground rumbles, threatens. “What. You really don't know what she's talking about. You’re pretty sure you’re a goat.“I’m a goat.”For a moment the witch stares at you, a bit of her guarded hostility giving way to mild confusion. “Right. What are you doing, then? Why are you heading deeper into the marsh?”That's a bit easier. “There's something wrong with the swamp. I wanna fix it.” Her expression sharpens. “Not necessary. The marsh and its problems are mine.”Blink. “Did you make it wrong?”“Of course not. Does something that alien seem like witch magic to you?”You don't know what witch magic looks like.“So you felt something off with the land, and decided to run towards it.”Nod.“Do you work for the Baroness?”“What's that?”“Of Silvercrest.”Tilt head.“... That’s all I'm going to get from you, isn't it.”...You point at the crow, who ruffles his wings. “What’s his name?”The bird squawks again. Sitting on your shoulders, Lulette looks up and shouts 'caw!' back, fluttering her wings too.The Witch Of Crows pinches the bridge of her nose, sighing. You pause.“I’m going to name it Rue.”The witch looks up.“Rue,” you repeat. She seems more tired now for some reason. “Do whatever you want.”At least Rue seems pleased. You notice Ashtia pawing the soft dirt next to you. Then you wonder where the tension from before went. Then you stop thinking about it.The Witch Of Crows grows a bit more serious again. “You don’t have any business being here, then. Turn around and leave.”You half-ignore her. “What’s wrong with the swamp?”“Not your concern.”“It’s broken. I wanna fix it.”“Again, not necessary.”Nnn. You don’t wanna leave the land like this. But she’s not letting you keep going.... Maybe you can come back? Maybe she’ll be less tired later. And have cookies. You can’t make the discordant feeling go away, but there’s something else to think about as well.

That one doesn’t have long.”“I fixed it.”“What?”You sway on your feet a bit, thinking.“I took the black thing out and hit it with my shovel.”The witch looks at the tool you’re resting on your shoulder. ... Wait.“But you live in the swamp.”The witch frowns. She was already frowning. Frowns harder? “And you’re okay...”“No. Whatever you’re thinking, no.”...“Stop looking at me like that.”...You ask. “Please?”The Witch Of Crows brings her hands to her face and almost sinks into them. “When did I cede control of my life to a goat,” she mumble-whines. “Fine, fine! I’ll handle it!”You bounce a little. She looks even more harried, though. You don’t see a problem; your life is controlled by a goat too.“Do you wanna nap with me? I’m good at napping.”Her reply is quick and sharp. “No, dammit.” The witch brandishes a hand outward. “You’re done here. Go away. Shoo!”Black claws burst out from the earth in front of her, forcing you back and forming a crisscrossing wall. Through its gaps you see the girl in black robes turn and stalk away. You hear Rue cawing from somewhere above, flapping her wings and disappearing into the swamp after the witch.Lulette is laughing, the weight of her clay pot shifting side to side on your head. “Baphy is a silly goat!”You are now a silly goat.Boots squelching through mud comes from behind you. “Baphy!”It’s Ikaros. You wave your free hand in the air. Hi Ikaros.
>>1045688You’re dragged back to the clearing of flattened vegetation and smashed tree trunks, where Constance, Isava, and a big unconscious snake wait. Your cheeks hurt because Isava pinched and pulled them when you came back. You apologised, and now you’re squishing your cheeks back into place while the horned girl looks away sheepishly. Constance is crouched by the Bakunawa whelp. You can see its wounds more clearly, but you think it’ll be fine. Mostly small scratches, some broken scales.“So? What happened?” The swordsman says.“I met a lady,” you reply.Silence.“She was angry, but also kinda nice,” you say, “like Isava.” The horned girl seems to choke on something. You wonder if you should come back and bring the witch something nice. Like a cold drink, or a pillow.Ikaros scratches his head. “Let’s pretend we didn’t hear anything.”Constance glances at the elf. “Plausible deniability?”“Yes.”The issue of what you were doing suddenly and willingly disappears from everyone’s view. The swordsman gestures towards the serpent he’s crouched by. “What now? Do I take its head?”You put your hands to your hips, a bit clumsy because your shovel is leaning against your shoulder. “Nu!”“Didn’t think so.” He laughs, then looks up at you with an easy smile. “Well, you did do all the work, and I’m not big on killing something this helpless. But that means our problem remains.”Hm?Constance turns his palms up in a small shrug. “We’re very broke.”>[ ] You could help look for plants and stuff. Theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvljIcWoTVIYou don’t have the best grasp of how important money is, but still. The first thing you traded for coins were the phirin fruits, so you ask whether there’s any you could find. Ikaros tells you the vines grow in forests, not here, but there’s other plants they might be able to find. You leave the Bakunawa whelp where it is, hoping the witch will be nice to it. Isava hands you your bucket and points out that your vial of Melfam’s Solvent is cracked. It’s still holding the clear liquid inside but you end up giving it to Constance for safekeeping, leaving your bucket empty except for that small metal box. It’s still morning, the time spent traveling through the swamp not having been long. You follow the adventurers back, and along the way Ikaros stops the group to point out a tall shrub with long, thin white leaves. It’s called Angel Siperweed, and is used for tea that makes people sleepy and numb. The elf points out some leaves which carry a strangely metallic sheen, and you help pull some out with the others. That happens a few times, and you end up reaching the campsite with a bunch of the shiny leaves in your bucket. There’s little reason to stay, so Constance, Isava, and Ikaros pack their things and prepare to head back to Wervik. The campsite owner gives the elf a small piece of paper when they talk; a message from that other group of adventurers, you hear, but you don’t really pay attention. The day is cool again, like yesterday, the breeze gentle. You haven’t asked anyone what season it is. Autumn, you think? Isava confirms your thought when you ask.Hours later your group takes a break, resting on the dirt by the side of the road. You hear Ashtia’s soft paws brushing the grass as she returns from her hunt. Lulette sits on your lap, humming, with her Bushjack’s pot resting in front of her. You touch it and it bites you, barely big enough to cover half your finger. You prod the little plant until it reluctantly lets you go.

Theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUJgjeIzjV0The others are talking, probably about the piece of paper Ikaros has in his hands. The one that he got from the campsite owner. The lanky elf beckons you over. “Something’s come up,” he says. “We’re going to find two of our friends back at Wervik, and tomorrow morning we’ll leave the town.”He tells you they’re going north-east to join up with their adventuring company, though he doesn’t really know for what.Isava asks what you’re going to do and you tell them you’re going to stay for a bit, then go back to the swamp. “Because it’s broken, and I wanna fix it.”It still bothers you, how wrong things felt. The witch didn’t want you there. She might get mad if you come back, as well.Still.Tomorrow morning. You know you’ll see them again. They know they’ll see you again, too.Ashtia prods your hand, and you pet her muzzle.
>>1054316The sun is setting when the four of you reach Wervik. Constance and Ikaros stop by the inn while you follow Isava to the apothecary. Inside, Lulette’s Bushjack bites Adalphen’s finger and the old man seems pleased that the fairy is caring for the little plant. The apothecary offers two silver each for the Angel’s Siperweed, and afterwards you’re left with two long thin leaves spun up in a spiral at the bottom of your bucket. You gathered them to help the three adventurers, but the horned girl says they have enough silver.Apparently the Mud Boar Inn has a room with baths. You’re directed to them very quickly when you and Isava enter. It’s nice and warm. The wooden bathtubs are a little tall and just big enough to sit in, and you sink half-submerged in the water blowing bubbles until Isava comes along and makes you wash properly, attacking your grimy hair with her hands and a bar of soap.Lulette for some reason is completely clean, but she joins you and floats around lazily in your bathtub anyway.> Anything you want to do before Constance, Isava, and Ikaros leave?
>>1054322Hug them goodbye. Then head for the swamp!
>>1054322>>1054344Yeah alright. Gotta fix that swamp.
A rowdy yet somehow comforting, peaceful evening at the inn gives way to a colder morning. You’re up before the sky grows bright, standing with Lulette on your shoulders and Ashtia by your side at the path that heads out north.Constance, Isava, and Ikaros are there accompanied by a woman with a white owl perched on her shoulder, which you think you’ve seen before, and a cat who is also a man. Or a man who is also a cat.You leave your shovel and bucket on the ground and hug your friends goodbye. Isava strokes your hair.“Take care of yourself, okay?”“Mm.”“Remember to eat well.”“Mm.”“And don’t get into too much trouble in the marsh.”“Mm.”...“This one grows impatient,” the catman or mancat says, “and thinks the little goat would keep her horns.”The horned girl hurries back, and you wave your friends goodbye.
>>1054487You wonder what you should do. You’re not sure if you should leave for the swamp today, not knowing what the witch would think if you came back so soon. You have a feeling she’ll be at least a little bit mad either way, though. It’s still early, but there’s a fair bit of bustling in town. Meandering about brings you closer to the road running east near the market square, where a bunch of people strap down crates and bundles of things to a couple of wagons.Lulette perks up and vanishes, reappearing on the shoulders of a familiar kinda-purple lady.“Lulette has found another mighty steed!”“Umm, yes. I can’t see- please move your hands, Lulette?”You walk up while the fairy steadies her Bushjack’s pot on Claritia’s head with one hand, her other still covering one of the half-fae woman’s eyes. She’s happy to see the three of you despite Lulette’s idea of fun. Or maybe because of it? You’re not sure.“We’re leaving for Silvercrest very soon,” she explains. You look around and see the other guardsman, Macarius, helping carry a stack of crates. You wave and he returns it, almost dropping the boxes. There’s more people, more weapons, than you expect, and vaguely recall the poster at the adventurer’s guild about hiring guards. Claritia explains that there’s been more revolutionary activity lately.“Remember when you ran into us a few days ago, and we were being... uh, attacked by a bunch of people?”You nod before realising you kinda don’t. You’re also not sure what circles have to do with anything. She tells you that Wervik hasn’t seen much of it, but the Baroness is noticeably less popular in other parts of the fiefdom because she’s taking more than she should from her people for her Witch Of Crows hunting. Or something. The trip to the city takes two days even at a good pace, so the merchants want to be careful. The caravan of wagons starts out east a little under an hour later, and you wish them a good journey.>[ ] You should go to the swamp today. You want to go back quickly.[ ] You should wait until tomorrow. Maybe the witch will be more okay with you being there.(there were some thoughts earlier for pestering the apothecary for lessons, or buying cider? - you can make other suggestions, though what Baphy has time for depends on the choice)

Before going, Claritia gave you a bent bit of metal and a gray, edged rock. Fire steel and chert, she said. You turn them over in your hands, then put them in your small metal box in your bucket. You want to go back to the swamp, getting up, hefting your shovel, and walking off to the north road out of town.A quick decision. Maybe you’re feeling impatient. The swamp has been wrong for a while now, though it’s difficult to figure out where that thought comes from. Something at the core of the land, spreading. The bounty on the witch has been there for a long time, too. Ikaros said... a year and a half? You don’t really know anything about the situation. You just want things to be right, and want to help if you can.A short distance from the town the path branches into two, leaning east and west, and you take the west one towards the campsite you had left only yesterday. A break after midday sees you chewing through a sweet red fruit while sitting on the grass, watching an unenthusiastic Ashtia trot around with Lulette on her back. You turn off the path when you start seeing trees against the dull blue-gray sky, reaching the edge of the swamp quickly. It’s late afternoon, and you’re a few hours away from where you met the witch last time.... You should probably figure out what you’re doing. Maybe if you walked into the swamp waving your shovel in the air the witch would notice? Though you should find a place to rest for the night, too.>[ ] Make camp in the swamp.[ ] Go to the campsite you were at yesterday.[ ] Walk into the swamp and wave your shovel in the air.

The campsite you were at yesterday seems obvious for a place to stay. You skirt the edges of the swamp, where the ground starts to grow soft and wet and the trees are still sparse. It doesn’t take long for the sky to start to darken and for you to see the hunter’s tower and the smoke from campfires rising up into the air.The feeling of wrongness isn’t there, this far out.Still, maybe you can do something for the land.> Spirit-Singing: Roll 1d100 + 5, DC70

You try to remember the feeling. The strange, discordant tune. You start humming gently, swaying side to side, straining yourself to hear the broken voice of the swamp, but your melody doesn’t gather substance, doesn’t form.To put it plainly, it doesn’t work.Lulette shifts, and you look up. “Can you hear it from here?” The fairy says. You shake your head, frowning. You feel a little bit drained, more tired than you normally would be after the day’s travel. You do vaguely remember being tired the other times you've sung with the land, but it's more noticeable now.Well, this is the edge of the marsh. Perhaps you’ll have more luck further in.Ashtia perks up, and there’s a rustling sound near the trees. There’s very little undergrowth here, and it isn’t night yet. You can’t imagine anything hiding well near the ground, but you can’t see anything other than the shaking of something moving through the bushes.Wait.It’s the bush that’s moving. You step closer, curious, and a green leafy thing as small as Lulette... looks at you? It’s a leafy bush legs. You don’t really know how else to describe what you’re seeing.“Hi,” you say, waving your hand at the little creature. The bush blinks, then makes a low, fluty ‘wuuu’ sound.>[ ] You still have two of those fruits in your bucket. Then you blink, crouch down in front of the creature, and mimic the low sound. “Huuu.”The bush rustles. You do not know how to interpret that. You reach into your bucket and take out one of the two fruits you gathered earlier. They’re slightly bigger than what you’d call palm-sized, though your hands are kinda small. Then again, the bush thing is kinda small too.... What do bush creatures eat? Would this be cannibalism? Before you can rethink your choices the bush reaches out with its hands (you learn it has arms; they look like thin branches) and takes the red fruit from you. Then it stuffs the fruit into itself, burying it under its leaves, and you start to hear crunching sounds.Hmm.The minute bush makes another whistling sound, this time a bit softer and lower in pitch. It shakes, rustling its leaves, then turns around and walks back into the swamp. You think you can follow it?You look back towards the smoke rising from the campsite, then to Ashtia, who is stoic as always. Then to Lulette, which as always brings you face to face with the other little plant in the scene, looking down at you from atop your head. You feel more than see the fairy shrug.Sure. Seems fun.
>>1055267Theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QHEzUEnuZkYou follow the minute bush creature, and it leads you north further into the marsh. After some time, maybe an hour though you have no way to keep track, your feet end up mostly submerged in muddy water. The trees here have roots that hold them up from the ground, and have leafier branches and thicker trunks than the ones you saw further south. The swamp here is darker from the subcanopy, and your vision is dominated by dull, deep greens. You start to notice it now, too. The undertone of a fractured heart. The bush scampers up a sort of ramp formed by a tree trunk partially hidden by brambles and leaves, looking back at you. You follow up the small path, taking great care as you put one foot after the other.
>>1055272It takes a while, ducking and curving past tree branches leading up, and when you break through the subcanopy, you’re greeted by something you’ve definitely not seen before.Tree limbs reaching out from distant mists, thick forks of verdant branches that interconnect into thin pathways hanging in the air. Open spots in the canopy filter in glowing orange rays of sunset that fall gently on triangular huts that seem like they were grown more than built. And all over the place, little bush creatures scuttle about. You’ve arrived in a village.
